Reviews of Mercury Theater Chicago
What a treasure! I saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert and it was FABULOUS! Sam in the box office was so nice and remembered talking to me when I picked up the tickets at will call! All the staff were accommodating and warm. I'll definitely be back anytime I'm in the area!
We recently rented the venue for the Ball State University graduating senior showcase. It is an amazing facility and could not have been more perfect. The staff is excellent and the stage house perfect with its beautiful architecture and intimate comfort. We have already booked the Mercury for next year's showcase. What a gem of a space. Thank you Mercury!
Great venue, have seen many plays here. Always an enjoyable time, they also have a bar for drinks. Will be back!
Recently saw Clue! here and it was fantastic! It’s a smaller theater, so it’s much more intimate. The bar area open before the show was nice to grab a drink for taking into the show. Definitely want to come back here!
If you want a night filled with intrigue and laughter head over to the Mercury Theater for their production of Clue! There isn't a bad seat in the house. The staging and the actors are amazing! I plan on watching it again with friends.
We recently hosted an event at Mercury Theater for 100 of our clients, at the Sunday matinee performance of Clue. The performance was very entertaining and enjoyed by all. The theater also opened up the Venus Cabaret bar for our group, so we were able to have some drinks, chat and mingle before and after the show, which worked out great. All the staff at the Mercury were a pleasure to work with coordinating the event, from buying the bulk tickets to finalizing the event details. A big thanks to Mercury theater for helping us with a very successful client event!
This is a lovely venue, simple, comfortable, a good rake, and the seats are offset. Their production are quality and there's decent parking (by the hour) just past the soccer field area on Southport...
I've been here a number of times and I'm always impressed by the performance and the creative ways they deal with having a smaller stage. Definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to have an entertaining night out especially since there are some good food opinions in the area as well.
Local gem! This is a wonderful intimate theater. It has fantastic performances and is well run. The plays often target a range of ages and tastes.
Have never been before and WOW. Was a superb show! I look forward to catching another 😀 …
My husband and I saw Clue last night. It was my first time at the theater and it was awesome. We’re definitely going to come back to see more plays.
Phenomenal performance of Clue! Great theater and really fun space!!
Back to the Mercury Theater, this time for Little Shop of Horrors, and it was great!
The actors did an amazing job, will be back.
I just noticed that their restrooms have floor to ceiling doors, very rare to see and love them.
Staff is friendly and helpful and I can't wait to go back again.
Saw Avenue Q here, great show! Food and snacks for sale and merchandise. Sat in front balcony and it was perfect. I believe I used Spot Hero to park. Will definitely go again!
My friends and I went to see Clue here. It’s a nice venue my only complaint was that if you sit in the balcony on the left side… a large chunk of the stage is blocked.
Went to see the Clue production here (11/11/22)! Absolutely fantastic; the lighting, the actors, the stage set, everything was so great! Friendly staff, as well!
Wow, wow wow! Had the opportunity to attend the Sister Act musical this past weekend at Mercury Theater. The cast, under the awesome leadership of Christopher Carter, put on an amazing performance. I am definitely looking forward to more shows at this theater.
Love the venue we were at the Venus Cabaret Theater and saw I'm Not a Comedian I'm Lenny Bruce. Absolutely fantastic performance from Ronnie Marmo. The show made me laughing, angry and sad! Highly recommend seeing this show!!
The Mercury theater and it's sister store the Venus den are two wonderful life theater experiences in Chicago the Venus is cabaret style while the Mercury is full-fledged musical theater. The owners have always shown that they know what it takes to put on good musical theater without the high prices of Broadway in Chicago. They have one numerous Jeff awards and the dual will continue to produce great music history in Chicago
Have used the beautiful Venus Cabaret Theatre space, attached to Mercury Theatre, for 3 different events with my theatre company THE BEAUTIFUL CITY PROJECT. Each time, the process was quick, painless, respectful and enjoyable from start to finish. Chris, Kristi, Honey, Walter & Eugene have an incredibly well-oiled machine, and everything from communication, expectation-setting, promptness, flexibility, professionalism, kindness...all of it exceeded expectations.
A special shout-out goes to Allie DiSanto, who always goes above and beyond with things we didn't realize we needed until we got there.
It's a beautiful space, but without the proper human infrastructure in place, a venue like this could really fall to the wayside. We've been blessed to have had three 5-star experiences there over the past handful of months, with hopefully more on the way.
I have been pleasantly surprised every time I have seen a show here. Such a cool small theater experience. I am glad it came back post-covid closure I'll be coming more often.
4th time here and this theater does not disappoint, great small venue where every seat has a great view. Just saw Spamalot, hysterical!! They truly hit the mark and I'm super happy we attended.
Beautiful theater, great performance. I would highly recommend seeing a show here if you can
Loved the Hocus Pocus show we saw here. The venue is great too! Very cozy!
The Clue was excellent. Many laugh out loud moments. Incredible acting. Perfect timing.
Beautiful, clean theater, good views, talented cast, clean bathrooms
Enjoyed a great production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert! Great show, you can tell the cast was having a lot of fun!
Awesome Show and Cast! Very intimate theater 🎭 and vibe. …
Always a great experience here. Charming space, well-run, and consistently solid productions.
nicely remodeled and kept up theater that is very well run. I went to see Sister Act which has a big cast but they handled the staging very well. Some interesting new shows are coming to this venue so stay tuned.
Just saw a great production here (Priscilla, Queeen of the Desert). Looking forward to seeing more shows here. Lovely space and wonderful staff!
It's a very small theater, which I love because even if you have the cheapest seats (on balcony), you could still see the actors facial expressions. It's about a swimming pool length. Their ushers are mostly retirees and might be lack of younger blood or volunteers. I wish their luck in bringing in fresh air. It's cosy, simple and small! I saw the sister act here.
Great show, well done. Staff is cordial and helpful. Plus cool restaurants in the same block.
Had a great time! Intimate space good with fun drinks! Will come back again!
Great venue for musicals. Chairs aren't the most comfortable, but they're not bad.
The Mercury Theater is a gem in the Chicago theater scene, and I was thrilled when it reopened recently. The productions are always top-notch, and the front of house staff is great to work with. (I've volunteered as an usher there multiple times.)
Intimate, cabaret theater that was perfect for a production of Lenny Bruce. Good views and a bar. They make it a good point to insure patron safety requiring COVID masks and vaccination proof. Parking is not so easy.
Went to see Winnie the Pooh...and loved the venue. It was small and older but cozy with really nice exposed brick walls. The staff was amazing and we all really enjoyed ourselves
Exposed brick from floor to ceiling, old timey seats and killer acoustics make pretty much any good here one that brings the house down. The place is filled with soul, come over to it.
Went for Clue twice, really great place.
Super friendly staff!
Women of Souls is an Amazing Tribute to Great Artists who have contribute with Songs that touch our hearts. The cast were Excellent. This show is a must see!
Great, small theater to see a show at. The staff is polite and helpful. The premises are neat and clean. The theater is small, therefore the stage is clearly viewable from all seats.
I saw the fabulous play, Women of Soul here. Lovely theater. Small and intimate with great sound. Lots of restaurants nearby too.
We attended to see the fabulous "Avenue Q" and we're amazed. The show is absolutely hysterical and relevant to today's culture as much as it is timeless. The performers have incredible musical talent and were professional, entertaining and funny.
The theater is cozy and has historic decor. The chairs are comfortable and all seats provide a great view of the stage. Glad to see this and other wonderful performances at Mercury Theater.
I saw Priscilla here and I think it may have been better than Hamilton.
Such a beautiful little gem of a neighborhood theater! Small and vintage, with comfortable seating and adequate spacing.
Have seen multiple shows here and they are always stunning! Broadway level production in an intimate setting. Absolute go-to for local Chicago theater!
The show was fantastic. The cast was top-notch and I had a really enjoyable evening of theater.
I didn't know ahead of time, but the restaurant next door is part of the same establishment. Come early for dinner, and stay for the show.
And they have a great new cabaret theatre venue. The space is really good, minimal amplification necessary for the actors and musicians, and there are no bad seats! There was a cash bar the evening I attended. I can't wait to see what they do with this venue!
Small teather. Good performance 👏 …
Nice venue. Limited seating means there are no "bad" sight lines. But the production was at best OK. Staging is cheap and the lighting and audio are only adequate. The cast was excellent though, and seriously tried to be acting through the limitations of the production. And the costumes were great overall, and this was a costume-hreavy production.
A great venue. Enjoyed Women of Soul immensely. Will watch for other upcoming performances. Getting in and out was seamless!
This was my first time at the mercury theatre. The staff was all very nice! The theatre was BEAUTIFUL, not a bad seat in the house. We saw Avenue Q. If you haven't seen it, catch the show before it's too late! Entertaining, relevant, and laugh out loud funny. They're also starting a Cabaret type show in a side room. It's absolutely gorgeous. They said it starts in October, and I'll definately be watching for opening day details!!
Any complaints I have are dwarfed by the marvelous shows and the thrilling experiences that happen at this theatre. But so you know what to expect, the line to pick up tickets is long and slow and the seats are crammed in tight. There is no row A and sometimes they even bring the stage right out onto row B, so if you like the third row, you'll want to aim for rows D or E. In some theatres the balcony can help you feel like you are closer to the action, but here it's just further from the action, though there's really not a bad seat in the house, so if you really want to see the show and that's all that's left, grab those seats. This theatre puts on great shows at reasonable prices and though you can find complaints just about anywhere if you try, you will not be disappointed when you leave this theatre.
We saw Christmas Schooner yesterday. GREAT Story! There is something for EVERYONE to take away from this experience. It is the Chicago Christmas story.
As far as the theatre is concerned - its a great place to see live acting. The building is big enough for the theatre experience, and yet small enough to feel as if you are part of the play.
Saw "The Man Who Murdered Sherlock Holmes" on Saturday night - it was excellent! Well acted and entertaining throughout. A smaller theater made for a much more intimate experience. I don't think there was a bad seat in the house. Would definitely check out another production there.
This place is amazing! We went and saw a Little Shop of Horrors there and the production was outstanding. The the show is a must-see and I see that it's extended through June. Although I've only seen one show here I'm sure this is an indication of how this theater performs. I will definitely be back!
Very nice theater, i doubt there is a bad seat in the entire house. We enjoyed ourselves
Came up from west central Ohio to celebrate our anniversary.wasn't sure about taking the "L" a ways from our downtown hotel. The ride was adventurous safe fun and gave us a true feel for Chicago. Absolutely loved the show the Producers. Nice theatre. Nice neighborhood. Great time all the way around.
Mercury Theater is a wonderful, cozy theater with great views at most every seat and outgoing, friendly staff. Had the pleasure to see Avenue Q here several years ago, and again last week for a lovely date night. Highly recommend this theater.
The venue was very nice and cozy the employees were very friendly and I enjoyed the show.
Can't wait to come again.
The Christmas Schooner would make a great addition to any family's holiday traditions. The show is well-acted and well-sung, and it has a timely message about love and about the value of bringing joy to other people's lives. The plot contains a very sad event, but nothing graphic and is appropriate for children who can sit through a play. Very friendly atmosphere as well.
This is a very intimate theater. I'm not sure of the exact seating capacity, but I'd guess somewhere between 100-150. Their productions are very professional. They're a full Equity house, and the acting is always impressive.
The theater itself is not big. It seats maybe 150 to 200?
The play, Little Shop of Horror was entertaining. The characters did an excellent job in acting, singing and dancing. I as well as the group I was with were impressed with the perfection of their performance. I will definit er ly go back to tge CDC theater and wou lk d hope to see CDC the same cast.
Nice small friendly place. Full disclosure- I was a volunteer usher.
A great place to catch a show, they've been doing a great job putting up musicals lately (Avenue Q and Little Shop of Horrors). You can get dinner next door before the show, the staff is helpful, and the productions are really top notch.
Avenue Q is a really fun show with an incredibly talented cast. But very much for an adult audience. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I recommend the Mercury Theater and this show highly.
Love this theatre!! Perfect size, no bad seats, talented performers, and lovely neighborhood. Saw The Producers a while ago and Avenue Q just recently. Can't wait to go back!
Just saw Avenue Q. Engaging Performances, Excellent Voices, Timeless Story of Purpose. I enjoyed every moment. It would be impossible for me to pick a favorite actor or puppet. The Mercury is the only Theater to see this show. Have Fun. We plan to see Pippin soon.
Little shop of horrors was great. First show I have seen here but definitely not the last. The attached restaurant was a good spot to meet up before the show. Food was good and even got to bring our beer to the show!
It's comforting to see a small neighborhood theatre thrive in this day and age but I wasn't impressed with their recent rendition of Into the Woods. I love musicals and cherish classic Stephen Sondheim standards but the execution of a Sondheim favorite left a bad taste in my mouth. The actors were fine but the set and costumes left a lot to be desired. Set in what looked like a child's playroom, balloons stood in for trees and dollar store tutus for costumes. It's hard to reinterpret a classic but if you can't do it right just stick with the original.
The Mercury Theater is a small and very intimate performance space, with probably not a bad seat in the house. I was recently at The Mercury to see Into the Woods, which left a lot to be desired. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of set and costumes, but thought the actors were all very talented. I'm not sure if all performances at the theater are as low budget as that, but if you can get discounted tickets and want to see some live acting, it's a nice place.
Great experience at Spamalot! Just a great show and the actors were spot on. We showed up a bit early to go to dinner and the manager watched our car until the parking attendant got there to move it. Just great customer service. I highly recommend this place!
Our family has seen three musicals at Mercury Theater when we have visited in Chicago. We plan to return whenever possible. The most recent musical we enjoyed was the Christmas Schooner. The music is beautiful, a touching story line, and great acting, makes this a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season.
Recently saw the C.S. Lewis play. Really quaint theater. Every seat in the house is good. Very good sounds quality. The seats could use some updating. Other than that, outstanding experience and very friendly service. Take advantage of the Vallet parking if you cannot find a spot.
Loved seeing Little Shop of Horrors. Great intimate theatre experience overall. Only bummer was sound issues. Couldn't hear the actors sometimes and we're often drowned out by music being too loud
Midsize Chicago theatre venue with productions ranging from the pretty good (Disney's Mary Poppins, The Hypocrites' Dracula, The Bardy Bunch) to excellent (The Producers, my favorite production of HAIR). The venue is pleasant: relatively comfortable seats with decent leg room, great sight lines, friendly staff. There is no lounging area or bar, but there are plenty of great bars and restaurants along Southport to help make a fine night out on the town.
Nice, small theater. Everyone gets a good seat here. Avenue Q had great singers, cute puppets, and a storyline, but was not as funny as we were expecting.
Ring of Fire was my first visit to the Mercury a great venue, small & intimate. The Sound guy was having a bad night with a lot of buzz, but he got it right for the second half.
Otherwise, great lighting & great sound.
More than a show, the production took me to a different time and place, reaching the suspended-belief level.
It tells Cash's story with music & comedy
When they transitioned to actor-intros near the end, I was bummed, I usually welcome the end of theatrical production. The good news for me -- there's plenty of material and story left for a Ring of Fire Redux.
Saw Little Shop of Horrors. Loved the intimacy of the space. The performances were great and the puppet plant was insanely well made. Cute neighborhood to walk around in. Had empanadas nearby before and gelato after. Even my boyfriend who hates musicals was into it. First time going to this theater but will be back for Spamalot 100%.
For an older theater it was very comfortable seating on the main floor for our senior group.
Went here to see "Into the Woods." It's a cute little theater that seats a surprising number of people comfortably without a bad seat in the house. Even the balcony was low and close enough to the stage to see all the action! A nice alternative to the Theater District!
I really like this theater a lot -- it's probably the nicest small theater in the city. It also, is attached to two restaurants (Delecce and Cullen's) and you can bring to go drinks into the theater -- there's nothing quite as nice as drinking a manhattan out of a plastic cup.
The theater itself is bright and airy, with a small balcony and has beautiful exposed brick walls. There is plenty of leg room (I'm 6'2") and the seats are pretty comfortable -- however I would advise you not to sit in the first three rows -- when the theater gets too warm they let some air in from grates to the outside, and being 20 degrees outside I was pummeled by 4 arctic blasts from outside.
Were it not for that I'd have to give them 5 stars, it really is a wonderful, clean, modern little theater.
We're from Germany and saw "Little Shop of Horrors" and it was brilliant!!! Such a great show and great performance!
Just the prices of the alcoholic drinks were a little bit too high.
We absolutely loved this small theater. No bad seats and snacks and alcohol available at a very reasonable price. The talent was well above what I would expect for a community theater.
This was so much fun! It's a small venue but they pulled it off. A great cast for Company and the cabaret setting worked. I had a thoroughly great time and recommend it to anyone for something different.
a nice place to see a live show. the acting talent is incredible! the acting is comparable to that of Hollywood talent that far exceeds the pretentiousness of Hollywood hasbeens. future stars can be seen here. Clara bow, fatty Arbuckle and Gloria Swanson may have graced these premises at one time..
Nice staff who will help you get seated (even if you're late!) and most seats have a good, intimate view of the performers, thanks to the small-ish space. Comfy, clean and charming.
Cute little theater with bars and food options attached. I have seen The Addams Family and Avenue Q at this venue and the performances were on point. Street parking is also relatively easy to be by, which is rare in Lakeview.
My first visit to the Mercury Theater was on a blustery, gray February weekend evening. It wasn't snowing, but the sky was threatening to. I mention the season, because, well, it can mean of course, that Chicago Theater Week is upon us!
The Mercury Theater is a classic structure, with an updated feel, especially considering the connection to the Deleece space. A true advantage, as drinks are welcomed in the theater, so grab yourself a rum & coke or a Jack & Ginger and enjoy the show!
Back to that February weather - I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the front row with my boyfriend, but that also put us directly in the path of the theater venting system. Was this grate connected directly outside to these sub-freezing temperatures? It was a blast of arctic air, that kept us from being entirely comfortable, but gave an excuse to hug tight and keep each other warm. Pretty smooth, Mercury Theater, making my moves for me.
I look forward to going back to the Mercury Theater, and it looks like I will be if The Hypocrites theater company will be using the space for their next two shows this year: Avenue Q and The Addams Family - two shows that I'm sure will be using this space to its utmost capabilities and I look forward to being there for both!
Cool space. Ginger Minj was fantastic!
Great productions in an intimate space. The staff always knows how to make the theater experience a fun one from lobby interactions to the performance itself, the Mercury is a theater to check out.
The Mercury Theater hosts a variety of companies and recent shows have been delightful. They are expanding and will have a new cabaret/restaurant space and bar. Parking can be a challenge, especially during Cubs games. But they do have valet parking. Great restaurants are steps aware with Coalfire being a personal favorite.
This is a great theatre that produces fantastic work. With various restaurants nearby, it's a perfect date night spot. Parking is decent; there is a mix of free, metered, and permit parking areas.
Small side, but Cozy. The balcony seats asking the sides make it hard to see the whole stage though.
Cute theater, it was my first time in there and first time seeing Little Shop of Horrors. Everything was great, it's nice that you can bring in drinks and it's a cozy space where all the seats are good!
Mercury has great shows and there’s not a bad seat in the house! Also prices are great for the high quality shows you get. This is my favorite place to see a show in the city.
The rails blocked our view in the balcony.
Cute little theater, and seating pretty much all has good views. My only advice is if you don't have a parking permit for the area to either uber or take the CTA because parking is the absolute worst otherwise.
Great venue for midsized productions.
Saw Avenue Q here. Great intimate venue for a show. Not a bad seat in the house. Lovely bar/restuarant attached as well. Would love to see more current shows here.
Sheer Madness was fantastic...great night in a perfect sized venue. Interaction with audience and Chicago and current references hilarious. Very entertaining!
We visited the Mercury Theater to see a performance of Spamalot. Theatre staff were welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We also loved the cast and musical 😍 …
This is one of the best venues in town for true 'Chicago' theatre. Walter Sterns, the owner and Artistic director has done a magnificent job growing and maintaining this unique venue.
Saw Pippin at Venus Cabaret. We are Pippin fans so we enjoyed the play. Love the cabaret setting but I feel they need to compliment the cabaret setting with appropriate appetizers. Empanadas, though tasty with a play from the middle ages??
I have seen so many great performances and musicals here. I never liked musicials but Mercury has converted me. My whole experience here has been wonderful every performance.
I saw Little Shop of Horrors here and had a wonderful time. The staff was very nice, and the cast was so good. I'll definitely check out what they have going on next.
Great place to watch a play
Insightful; two lead actors with good screenplay to work with were great. The support actors brief performances were enjoyable with that great screenplay the 2 hours = very good.
Nice old theatre for live plays. The lobby is very cold. Cool balcony seating, has a restaurant connected to the lobby for pre and post show.
Very quaint. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. I look forward to attending another event there in the future.
Enjoyed performances.
Good seats. Friendly staff
Intimate but good space. Staff is mostly great, box office was a bit ineffective when I went. The common area to the side is nice for intermissions.
They always put on a fabulous show and it's worth every penny. Definitely one of my favorite theatres in Chicago.
I have not seen a single show that I did not love here. The production quality, performers, and staff create a wonderful theatre-going experience.
Loved the performance of Avenue Q at the Mercury Theater.
The cast and crew where incredibly friendly and we got to chat with them after the show.
Small venue with really good Acoustics and every seat is good. Of course the theater is only as good as the performers and we saw a really good performance that night
Enjoyed the show. Most of the staff was really friendly.
Wonderful theater space. Enjoyed the show!
Theatre good. Show ghastly!
Nice venue. I would recommend getting seat front row balcony. The space between the rows were great.
I came here to see Little Shop of Horrors. They had some of the most entertaining actors I’ve ever seen! The production was phenomenal!
Saw Little Shop Of Horrors last night. It was awesome. Met most of the cast. They were so nice. Would go back.
Wonderful experience, helpful and courteous staff. Will definitely go back for another play.
Saw little shop of horrors, it was amazing! Absolutely loved the set and how it utilized simple wall changes to create space and unique locations
Great small theater, every seat looks like it would be good. The cast of Ave Q was excellent.
Take a blanket or a thick sweater. During performance you will get cc cold. Otherwise, a great experience with a nice atmosphere, except for A/C.
This was a great production of my favorite Sondheim show! Excellent staging in an intimate space & the cast was wonderful!
Nice and clean venue, cozy seating and friendly ushers! Great little community theater...
Seats are fine for me and I am 6' & 240. Not a bad seat in the house up close or far away.
Nice small theatre. Had great seats. The show was Awesome!
Small venue, but great seats. We really enjoyed Little Shop of Horrors.
Everybody was wonderful that we encountered at the theater. The theater is warm and intimate. Avenue Q was hilarious!

Wonderful! I only wish my friends could have joined me.

We loved the show! It's an amazing true story of a remarkable man and family.

Enjoyed the show looking forward to coming again
It's a small cozy theater.
Charming theater! Loved the production too :) will definitely come back
Nicely-renovated early-20th-century movie theater, great for small performances--twinned with a good restaurant.
We laughed and laughed - show was well done, and the cast was terrific.
Such an intimate space so there’s really not a bad seat in the house!
Spamalot was an absolute joy to attend and the theater was conveniently located for multiple parking locations nearby
Very nice venue located in convenient location. Shows are always too notch.

Excellent service and Lady Day performance was outstanding
This is a lovely, intimate stage theater with maybe 150 seats.
Nice cabert style theater. Greatly enjoyed the show Lady Day
Wow! Golden Gals was amazing! I'm a super GG's fan and this was outstanding. The actors were amazing! The accents, mannerisms, even the walks! Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia are alive and well! The story was great, the singing was great, the hair, make up and costumes are stellar. I want to go back and see it again and again. So much fun!! Every employee we encountered was so kind and warm, a lovely theater I can't wait to take friends and family to.
