Reviews of Chicago Shakespeare Theater
Exist Travels
This is one of newer theaters in Chicago. The seats are comfortable and you have legroom. We have set from the front row all the way to the very back of the balcony and the view are good. The views are great outside the theater too ! They have a good assortment of shows each season so you have a variety to choose from. The shows are not always part of the Broadway in Chicago season tickets.

Walking into the theater the staff was respectful, professional, and pleasant. They were diligent in checking vaccination credentials and made sure people were wearing their masks correctly throughout our visit.. The theater seating was comfortable and I had remarked that I didn't see a bad seat in the house. You could by drinks and candy and bring them into the theater. The washrooms were immaculate.
The Christmas show performance of Scrooge by the Q Brothers was fantastic! Same story, totally new way of telling it. We laughed, we clapped along, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the theater.
I would highly recommend going to see a show here in general and this show in particular. Bravo!

Went to see The Notebook. The venue was the newer stage.
The musical was uneven. I had neither read the book nor seen the movie so had no comparison. I throughly enjoyed it. The staging was inventive and apropos. The story was engaging, funny, and poignant. The songs moved the storyline only marginally and that might be because the singing was uneven, seemingly out of the performers' range in a few cases. That said, it was a delightful experience in a good space and highly recommended!

The experience was phenomenal and the performance of actors themselves were awesome. The stage and music was beautiful!!!

You can park at the Navy Pier parking garage. Was a little confusing where to walk in when walking along the pier. Have to walk in by a door that says Parking Garage and take stairs to 2nd floor. Was a little confusing when at our seats how to find the bathroom. Staff was friendly. Theater is a small venue. Show was excellently.

2nd play I've been able to make within this theater and was very happy I was finally able to make it back after all these years. Unique experience even if you're a fan of plays with the apron stage. The cast uses the aisles to make entrances and exits which in such a small theater it pulls you into the play itself. Hoping to get back for another play sooner this next time.
David Nowak
What an incredible performance on opening night of All's Well That Ends Well. The theatre is beautiful, easy to access, and comfortable in its seating. There's not a bad seat in the theatre. We will definitely be back in the future.
Renee Law
Had a blast. We were at the opening night of the Notebook! The theater is easy to navigate and there's a great view from most seats
Rizelle Angelique McDermott
Beautiful theater! On the smaller side, which I appreciate. I remember going here as a kid for a field trip, but The Notebook was the first show I came to see since then.
Martha Geppert
Outstanding Theater - Chicago Shakespeare Theater produces consistently high quality and entertaining plays, Shakespeare and other, with many creative productions. The courtyard theater is a beautiful Shakespearean space with no bad seats, and the upstairs space is an intimate smaller space. The staff are very helpful and the amenities are good. I always enjoy my visits. I am very excited for the opening of their new space The Yard, which will provide numerous options for configuring theater space. And the view from the lobby space is beautiful Chicago.
Amy Bates Nelson
I saw the Chicago Shakespeare Theater Company perform the musical Emma! It was a wonderful adaptation. The music perfectly moved the story along and the performances were fantastic!
The interior theater architecture mirrors the Globe with the lines and use of wood, what feels like to me, a nod to one of Chicago's famous architects, Frank Lloyd Wright.
There is a bar in the theater and you can bring in the drinks.
If you arrive early there are various places to eat in the Pier building.
We received an insider tip, from a matronly woman who has had season tickets since the company met in a space with folding chairs, get your parking validated The moment you arrive then head back out the door and pay for parking. That way you won't be waiting in line to pay your ticket at the end.
Another insider tip, we got from the girls sitting next to us, skip the bathroom line and take the elevator to the top floor and the women's bathroom has an amazing view and no line!
Charles Fisher
I saw "Red Velvet" last weekend, and once again I was transported both by the wonderful architecture of this theater and by the detailed history that they presented onstage.
This facility is a superb asset of Chicago theater, and I hope that appreciation for it deepens and grows.
Doug Stern
Kudos to Chicago Shakespeare! My son and I saw a wonderful production of HAMLET here. Beautifully staged and performed in an exciting venue. Henry and I will be back! HUZZAH.

First time ever been to this place and I loved it! For everyone under 35 years old they offer special discounts. I paid only $20 for my ticket instead of $53 . Actors played very well. I have read Romeo & Juliet for several times. Watching the actual play with an English accent was very enjoyable to me♥️
Madeline Brownstone
I have never seen a bad show here. From Shakespeare to Samuel Beckett to circus. There are three theaters. The Yard is the newest. And the views from the lobbies are the best in town.
Artful Creations By Tracie
They really know how to put on a production! This was our second visit and second play (first was Romeo & Juliette and this one was Hamlet). I love the intimacy of the theater and how some of the actors do a Q&A with the audience afterwards (at least for school groups since that is my only experience).
Thomas Schutt
Excellent quality theatre. Very strong and imaginative production value for both the Shakespeare plays and the others of their season. Their facilities are well-marked, bathrooms are clean and attendants are very kind and helpful.
Package and season rates are very reasonable and their exchange program is also great if some conflict comes up. Places like this are why Chicago has such a good reputation for live theatre.
Conrad Pomykala
Excellent theater, well run. Parking is costly; $20 after validation. Allows bar drinks and snacks in the seating area.
Omar Ghaffar
Great place for a play. Have seen Shakespeare plays at Globe in London and the experience here was just as entertaining and enjoyable. The production and acting were all at a grade A level - these are the best of the best in theatre since Shakespeare is so difficult to present properly.
Keith Carlson
The Notebook is a great show. This theater is a wonderful place to watch a show, not a bad seat in the house.
John Roth
Great atmosphere. Have yet to be disappointed with a performance. Exceptional actors who love the craft.
Sabrina Howe
Amazing preference by the actors, comfortable seats, relaxing atmosphere, considerate staff. The lighting, sound, and props departments did especially well. During the intermission snacks and drinks available. Small gift shop with books and souvenirs. And if you are under 25 years old there is a discount on the tickets, you can ask if it will apply to a guest of yours as well. They do validate parking, but it doesn't seem to cover the entire fee of the parking garage, just a percentage.
Faith Denlinger
We always have an amazing experience. The people are great and the productions are fantastic.
Nora
great shows! we went to see comedy of errors in the yard and it was great! they don't allow photography in the theater but this is a photo of the view from Navy Pier.
Hugh Allspaugh
Saw Q Brothers Christmas Carol on New Year’s Eve and what a great show and wonderful venue. We live in Chicago and often try to avoid Navy Pier but we will definitely be back to CST for more shows. A really terrific venue and super friendly staff.
Phil Davis
Hamlet was incredible! The cast nailed the characters, the set design and costumes added an appropriate modern touch that didn’t take away from the integrity of the play. Excited to come back for another show!
Kattria Campbell
The place is immaculate...the view is stunning
Miss Librarian Nessa
My favorite theater. So lovely inside and they require proof of vaccine or proof of a negative test. Also masks are required as well.
My photos are from row A gallery.
Parking: the theater has its own section for theater viewers to park. Drive down navy pier until you see Chicago Shakespeare Theatre sign. Its $21 to park there.
Mark Tomkins
Excellent place to see a show. Seating is intimate with great views from all over.
Natalie Dirks
This is a great space for getting close to the stage and really feeling like you're part of the show. The seats are a bit more spacious than some of the other theaters I've been to. The only downside is the location on Navy Pier is not the most convenient to get to. But it's definitely worth the trip!
Iris Bichler
We came here to see the new musical “ the notebook” and had a great time! Highly recommended
Kitty G
The Yard Theater at Chicago Shakespeare is a new and larger space, and this is where "The King's Speech" was mounted. I liked the production, with minimal sets and excellent acting, and my vantage, though quite high, provided very good sight lines with no problem hearing, but I didn't care for the seat itself: my chair was very erect and not all that comfortable; also, it faced the stage at an angle, which made me have to turn my body to see properly.
Di P.
Just delightful! I unfortunately had an injured ankle and the swelling forced us to leave at intermission. Sad. It's a cool theater, serves alcohol in the foyer, top notch medium sized theater. The actors are wonderful as well.
Valery Stanley
I guess it will depend on the play, but I saw The Notebook and was completely overwhelmed!
The production quality puts Broadway to shame!
Lance Rasband
Really cool and intimate theater, don’t think there is a bad seat in the house.
L. G.
Remarkable! Energetic! Fresh! Joyous! Sunshine! What a way to venture back into live theater after a 20 month dearth. Chicago Shakespeare Theater delighted us with their current staging of As You Like It. They cleverly wove Shakespeare's story with many popular Beatles songs set in the 60s and it worked wonderfully. I was surprised to hear of the 2 hour and 35 minute running time before the show started, but I sat on the edge of my seat taking it all in and the time flew by. I couldn't help dancing in my seat and was thrilled when we were encouraged to clap along. The actors/musicians were marvelous and deserving of the standing ovation. I plan to spread the word to family and friends to pack the house for the run of this innovative and sure to be a hit production. You really shouldn't miss it.
Mark Knight
It's always a wonderful evening when you attend a play at CST. Tonight we saw "Alls Well That Ends Well". Great performance, especially by the young actress (Alejandra Escalante) who plays Helen. Go see this show before it's gone!
Patrick Landry
Watched The Notebook. Venue was very nice. Easy to get to. Comfortable seating.
Jen Busch
I've been a subscriber for almost 20 years and I'm always blown away by the productions. Cannot recommend enough!
Lilian Micallef
Fabulous show, enjoyed it and cried, Emotional.
Beautiful voices and songs.
Rita K
Great theater company and venue. As You Like It was a fun version of the play set in the 60s to Beatles music. It came together perfectly and did not feel at all contrived. Great view and sound in this theater. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a really bad seat.
Kari Litteer
BEYOND happy I was able to see Six before it went on tour and to Broadway! Such a unique, intimate venue! I will definitely make a point to visit the next time I’m in Chicago!
Michelle Gullett
I have seen numerous plays here. There is not a bad seat in the house. All of the performances have been outstanding, and the staff is always wonderful.
Selest Shelby
I went here for a school field trip to see Macbeth and it was phenomenal!!
Kiley Fitzgerald
Incomparable. There is nothing else like this space or company. Intimate yet huge and the stage comes straight out. Into your lap.
The company of actors is truly superior. I read about the kinds of training and careers Shakespearian actors are exposed to and I was amazed. True geniuses of both word and emotion.
Do yourself a HUGE favor and go. It's a damn national treasure!
Lee Mickus
great theater saw Q Brothers Christmas Carol hip hop holiday musical
lois hobart
"As You Like It" was absolutely sensational! Weaving The Beatles and Shakespeare together was seamless and utterly joyful. The staff is wonderful, seats are comfortable and parking was easy ... And validated!
Leo Rodriguez
I like the venue. Actors for Hamlet were good. Enjoyed the show.
Deborah Lindsey
A place for great theater in Chicago! They never disappoint!
Jeri Harte
Beautiful theater, very helpful attendants... Helped my mom work a wheel chair and very accommodation!
Melissa Cobb
Always a delight at Chicago Shakespeare! Of course the production was wonderful, but also the whole experience was delightful. Parking was easy and getting from the garage to the theatre was a breeze. There were lots of helpful folks about ready to assist. And it was clean and comfortable seating. I highly recommend you go see one of their shows!
BettyAnn Brody-Bucksbaum
Their musical rendition of As You Like It with Beatles' songs was wonderful. They require vaccination cards and ID so I felt comfortable even though the theater was full
Chuck Glass
A great venue to experience classic Shakespeare, or updated Shakespeare, or Shakespeare with a twist, or....
Pamela Rohs
Great show after talk was informative and the actors are all available for autographs and photos after.
Kathy Sue King-Watters
Chicago Shakespeare Theater is always a wonderful experience. Lobby is light and airy with amazing views. The theaters are well designed and comfortable. The staff is unfailingly kind and helpful, often going out of their way to be helpful. I have probably seen dozen of performances at this location and many before at the Ruth Page Theater. The performances, the production, the costuming, the choreography, everything is world class. I've never been disappointed by one of their performances. CST is something everyone should experience at least once. You'll get hooked.
Lynn Rouse
Beatles songs intertwined with professional wrestling made for the best interpretation of Shakespeare's As You Like It yet. Stellar acting and directing. Welcome back, Bard!
William Suca Jr
Great small venue- not a bad seat
The One and Owenly
Beautiful production of A Midsummer Night's Dream! Thoroughly enjoyable. Not a bad seat in the house!
Bill Burns
I think I already reviewed this theater. This is top shelf professional entertainment. The facility is beautiful. Avoid the top balcony at least on the side or you'll lean forward the entire show to see over the railing and lights
We've had season tickets for a number of years. Two out of three shows are really good with some more marginal stuff in between. I would like it much better if it weren't on Navy Pier. Terrible location for traffic.
Kirill Altunin
Nice new theater. And Peter Pan was great! Kids loved it
Charles Nelson
A wonderful company in an effective space. The players and the productions are amazing. How they use the limited stage always surprises me in a good way. The theater itself has gone for height rather than depth, and that totally works for the kinds of plays they perform. Try to get on the main floor if you can, but the balconies are OK too.
Kevin Donley
Absolutely love this intimate theatre. The stage protrudes into the crowd and the seats sit around it in a U shape. Parking is validated which is huge, and the theatre has its own parking so even if the parking garage is full you will have parking. Dinner on the pier topped off with a mid summer nights dream was a truly wonderful evening
Dane Holmes
A very nice and small theater. The plays I have gone to have all been very well done and fantastic. The sets are creative and the casts are great. Even if you don't like Shakespeare or are unsure if you would understand, I would still recommend a visit.
mary hodur
Always a top notch experience! From the parking lot attendants to the greeters at the door who directed me to the new theatre at The Yard, to the bartenders, hostesses, volunteers, and especially the performers! This was such a great evening. I just love the new theatre. And Teller's creative take on Macbeth really added to the production. You will never go wrong with a visit to Chicago Shakespeare theatre.
Brent Terry
A gorgeous venue with only the highest quality performances. If you think Shakespeare isn't relatable in this day and age, or that the classic plays are too old and stuffy, or just too hard to follow, you definitely need to see something here. You'll be stunned by their deft addition of modern touches to these works, while remaining true to the original material. Can't recommend highly enough!
John Byrne
A true treasure of Chicago! We were here most recently to see The King's Speech. It was amazing, no surprise! This is probably the best theater experience we've had consistently in Chicago... Shows are great, seats are comfortable, place is spotless and staff is terrific. Makes it worth doing the schlep to Navy Pier and braving some of the tourists. Have eaten beforehand at Riva Crab House to take advantage of the pre-show discount. Great food and great deal (with great views).
Jessica Isabel
I've been going to Shakespeare theater for years. Some of the best plays I've ever seen were done here. Their recent Hamlet was magnificent. It's in a perfect location. Navy Pier is easy to get to with indoor discounted parking. The theater is a replica of the Globe. It's intimate and you feel like you're part of the play. You can dine right at the pier after the performance. It's perfect!
Andrew Wagner
I've had season tickets for years, and I've only really seen one performance I wasn't really feeling. Aside from the classic Shakespeare, there are a bunch of other more contemporary productions that range from emotionally gripping to absurdly hilarious. I think they may still have a promotion for people under a certain age in an effort to lower the average age of the audience.
Craig McCullough
Great view of the stage, before the play begins! A wonderful setting for seeing EMMA!
Mary Biancalana
Love this Theater! The actors are top-notch and the venue, in the honor of true Shakespearian form, is just like the Rose Theater might have been found back in the day of Shakespeare himself. Our seats were great and we could see the whole show. It was chilly, so be sure to bring a sweater. I highly recommend this theater for families, couples, singles, seniors and anyone wanting a professional theater experience for a reasonable price, in our great city of Chicago!
Sydnee Young
Fantastic theater, set up in the same style as Shakespeare had his theater set up. Watched A Midsummer Night's Dream here and it was great, the set is quite detailed and the actors are very talented. Would definitely recommend!
Jolie Patel
I have been a patron for years....long before Navy Pier and have never seen a bad performance. The actors are so engaged. We had a treat one day when eating lunch after the matinee and the actors came to the same spot for lunch. They came over and talked to my kids about the performance. My kids still talk about that!
Fabio Pettenati
Love this small theater. There productions are always great
S Personke
Love this place. The productions are always good. We saw an exceptionally incredible production of "The Tempest." Boy, I wished they'd bring that back again! We haven't been to the new theatre space yet, but hope to get there this May.
Amy Avona
This was the second time we attended a play here. The actors, set, and music were all amazing. Before the show started an actor came into stage to help set the tone and explain how to watch and listen to Shakespeare. Then after the play, the actors remained on stage to take questions from the audience. I would recommend the Chicago Shakespeare Theater to anyone, but particularly those with children.
Thomas F
“Six” was brilliant here! Public transportation was a breeze for this tourist. The theatre itself had very close seats, but there wasn’t a bad view in the entire house. It conveniently connects to shops at Navy Pier. It was great!
Sydney Alyssa
Great actors. Very well put together. Staging allows for theater fans to surround the stage and feel like you are part of the action. Actors and writers make productions very accessible to all ages, which was a huge plus for us. A bit of an undiscovered gem and well worth your money over other Navy Pier options.
gerard charles
Always good quality performances in easy to access there's. All three theaters have their unique look. Plays are well produced and beautifully staged. A real treasure for Chicago. Lots of different styles of play presented so look for something that catches your fancy and go and enjoy.
Ciara McNaughton
Always an amazing preformance. Worth the money and time. Really do a great job changing up Shakespeare to be modern or different and the changes are never cliche or annoying. The actors are always fantastic and professional
Madi
We saw Q Brothers last week and it was amazing! The design of the lobby is just beautiful and all of the staff were incredibly helpful - from the box office to house manager to ushers. The show was a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!
Justin V
The Chicago Shakespeare theater is truly wonderful. I've been to probably 10 plays over the last couple years. The location is great, the plays are very well done and have unique interpretations and modern twists, while honoring their roots. The staff went out of their way to get me better seats when I went with a date but ordered seats that were physically separate by accident. They guarantee parking and after the discount it's only $20. They sell snacks and drinks before the show/during intermission. Anyone under 35 years old can get very discounted tickets ($20 a seat)
Don't give them your phone number though, as they will call you regularly to try and sell you packages of plays. It's annoying and awkward.
Anurag Verma
Excellent shows, very entertaining not just for the Shakespeare fans but for everyone in general. We went to an Othello remix that entertained the young and old equally. Great script, acting and energy. Added bonus is the terrific night time views of the Chicago city itself.
Adriana Vega
Beautiful theater. And the staff is so friendly and helpful. It's so small and intimate a little hidden treasure I sadly never was privvy to in my 27 years of living in Illinois/Chicago
Glad I found it. Will definitely be going back when I can
Amy Cole
Beautiful theater, a bit cramped on seating for being so new. Acting was magnificent even though I don't really understand Shakespeare. Overall great experience for my first time seeing Shakespeare.
Drew Dietz
The facility is located on Navy Pier there is tons of opportunity for all ages entertainment, dining and of course excellent views. The area is very touristy but access to downtown provides some relief from crowded food courts. Within the theatre is a pub great for pre/post show drinks.
Kathy S
We saw Q brothers' Christmas Carol. Really enjoyed it. My friend wanted to take public transportation from the burbs, certainly a viable option. In the end, I think we would have been better driving and paying for Navy Pier parking for warmth, flexibility, and also for cost.
Loni Cross
I went to the Shakespeare Theater in Navy Pier with my school and we went to go see Macbeth. The play was great. The actor's had no microphones but i could hear them loud and clear. I also like how some of the roles were made for people not of color but African Americans play certain parts.
Aimee Dewante
I deal with Navy Pier just to go to the Shakespeare Theater. The plays are great, the sets are well done, and I loved how the orchestra was behind the stage, just barely visible. The theater is nice too - intimate without being too small. I would take a date here, my grandmother, or a friend! Good for all occasions.
Anna Correa
Thanks Chicago Shakespeare Theatre for the discount to the bar below, the amazing show “Six,” and thanks for all the work you do to give performance opportunities for a reasonable amount of money.
I traveled in for work and discovered a show I have been wanting to see was playing here, of course I had to go! I loved the location of this theater and the many options for dining and pre-show activities.
John Clemens
Theater was much smaller than I expected, but that means you really don't have a bad seat. Anything in the middle is good. Never sat on the outside edges. Staff was efficient and there crowds small.
Brooke Hutchison
This theater is at Navy Pier, which is not always the easiest to get to, but this theater is worth a trip out there. If you don't know much about Shakespeare, his first plays were in a small, courtyard style theater in London called The Globe. The play I saw was in a theater that mimicked The Globe is style and size, giving the plays a more authentic touch. The space is small and intimate, which is perfect since the actors don't wear microphones. The costumes, make-up, props, lighting, and performance were extremely well done, and the entire experience was very impressive.
If you're looking for a deal, they often offer half priced tickets for really good seats.
V Lynn
I saw Hamlet. This production of the Shakespeare play was excellent! The lead character was fascinating and even though you may know the story, it was never told quite like this and you still wanted to know how it ends.
Alice Connelly
The play was great as usual. I am not sure I really like the new venue. The Yard floor plan was great for viewing the stage but was very uncomfortable with the very limited entrance and exit. I wouldn't want tb be there in an emergency.
Jeffrey Seidman
We have had season tickets for three years and enjoy the space. I find there productions boom or busts though. When they nail it it's a home run but if they are off. .look out. The Yard is great theater space and so is their original space. The view is one of the best in the city, we still pause to take it in every time. The staff is Uber friendly and accommodating. I also like that they serve Maccallans at the bar. My favorite! Any show that gets good reviews. .go!
Jackie Bauer
Romeo and Juliet is Barbara's best directorial effort in years. Relevant without trying too hard. Lead performance s felt effortless and enthralling. I hope they grace the stage at Navy Pier many times to come.
Cesar Torres
Great place, friendly respectful employees.
Elizabeth Mendez
I saw Emma and it was a great experience! Love this place
Dara Koper
Very good direction and actors/actresses (with few exceptions). Good venue. The only negative point is that there are no surtitles. I admit I enjoy Shakespeare's plays much more with surtitles.
Josh Banfield
Smaller theater where almost every seat is a good one. They do have a full bar on the inside but don't allow any outside drinks. We saw Six which was incredible, go now before it's over!
Robert Bishir
When attended the production of Hamlet in 2019 and it was amazingly well done and beautifully performed. Looking forward to going back when able!
Nicole Maldonado
It was a great performance, I watched Mary Stewart... The seating however was a tight squeeze and was difficult to see in front of me with the man in front of me being quite tall. It was a great night, but it could have been better.
Judith Roth
Spectacular productions, superb actors, unbelievable staging & set design, live music often incorporated on stage into the productions. Experience stunning theater in a world-renowned venue modeled on the original Shakespearean Globe Theatre in London & founded by Chicago's own Barbara Gaines.
Lorie Jones
I have lived in Chicago all my life and never knew about this theater until I was asked to go to a play....awesome...beautiful...hell...just go!!!
David Biller
I keep coming back to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, time and time again, as much for its world-class theatre productions as much as its location in the heart of Navy Pier. The glass structure of the house lobby affords incredible views out to the lake, the Crystal Gardens and the Ferris Wheel. There are two primary stages within the CST - the downstairs thrust stage and the upstairs, intimate attic theater. The thrust stage is an excellent space for the Sondheim musicals I've had the good fortune to see. For the past three years, some incredible shows have been presented by the company under the direction of Gary Griffin. Classics such as Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy and the upcoming Road Show. Each production is a fully-immersive, forget that you're merely in the audience and devour the show production.
Also, pro-tip for those theater-goers under 35: Be sure to check the CST website for their young theater program, with tickets for as low as $20 to these incredible productions, along with, fittingly enough, productions of the Bard's classic plays.
Beth Ford
This is an intimate, well arranged theater with not a bad seat in the house. If I could give it a 4 1/2 I would because it's at Navy Pier which is a NIGHTMARE. Don't know why so many people go to the Pier since besides the theater there is nothing to do but eat bad, overpriced food, drink outside and see the beautiful lake views (which nobody is looking at there and which you can see for miles and miles and miles for free without the traffic, parking hassles and tourists). I honestly dont know why the Pier is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the State of Illinois. I'd see anything again at the Shakespeare as long as it was in the dead of winter...
Andrew Ryan
Beautiful facility, went for a school field trip. I had the pleasure of being seated in the Courtyard Theatre. A beautiful thrust stage, excellent acoustics and beautiful architecture reminiscent of The Globe.
Pegi Anton
Loved SIX the musical!!! Great show and amazing talent!!!
Edinson Elkin Molina
I went to the Shakespeare to see Emma. I am so happy that I was able to enjoy this beautiful masterpiece. Emma is funny, romantic and entertaining. The music is worderful , and the theater is a beautiful temple for the arts.
Erin Dashnaw
Always hosting the most amazing troupes from around the world with unrivaled quality. Not just Shakespeare either! Give a play you've never heard of a chance here, I've never not laughed out loud and cried at any experience.
Willard Korfhage
Saw A Midsummer Night 's Dream. It was great. Well acted, interesting sets. The play within a play was very funny. We have enjoyed every preformance we have been to at the theater.
Debbie Rea
We love this place and have been subscribers since before the theatre company changed its name and moved here. I'm not giving it five stars, however, because it is becoming less and less of a SHAKESPEARE company as the basic subscription includes fewer actual Shakespeare plays and adds other plays that are not as interesting to us. Why not make those plays the add-ons and stick to Shakespeare for the main season shows?
Sean Wang
The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre at Navy Pier has clean and modern facilities for patrons. Lots of space to move around during intermission. Beverages and snacks are sold on each floor. The theatre itself is nice and clean.
Marcus Hamilton
Chicago Shakes is my favorite place in the city... and there are a lot of great places. I go as often as I can. It's world-class Shakespeare in my city.
Season passes are absolutely worth it, and if you know someone under 35 they have a discount program for two tickets. Absolutely worth every penny.
Rhonda Purwin
You can always count on creative performances here. Incredible sets are a given. It was also found to see TR Knight (George from Grey's Anatomy) in a truly hysterical role as Bottom. He needs to be on stage more often!
Amanda Bellino
Beautiful theater in the round! The staff was friendly and there didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. I really enjoyed the production of Emma.
Martyna Sobczak
The theater is lovely and modern. The space is lent to well directed plays and the actors are wonderful. Would definitly recommend for you night out to the theater or as a field trip destination.
Joseph Lancaster
I cannot rave about this venue enough. I have never been disappointed here; they consistently devise excellent productions, which include both classic settings and more modern interpretations, as well as a few things each season that aren't from The Bard. This is the one Chicago theater ticket i refuse to give up, regardless of what is going on in my life.
Michelle
Hidden within the kitschiness of Navy Pier is this gem. I always enjoy great performances here. Will never forget the modern-day rap rendition of Othello—stunning, provocative, and entertaining.
Patt Cheney
Peter Pan was phenomenal beginning to end. Children and adults loved it. Jeff Kmiec's set was beautiful and quite functional for quick changes. Music was wonderful. Discount parking too.
Joyfully His
Our first time here for a show and we WILL be returning! The theater was comfortable-not hot or cold like some theaters. The experience was memorable.
Cheryl Hague
Consistently fabulous theater! I take my university-level Shakespeare class to a performance every year. I've been to The Globe in London. The performances at Chicago Shakes are every bit as good. Truly a world-class theater!
Tiffany Schultz
My school took all of the students here for a performance. Bravo! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you!
Jeffrey Mudge
The plays I've attended here have all had excellent acting and beautiful sets. It's a small space so you can see and hear well no matter where you sit.
Lara Robeznieks
Very entertaining experience for both lovers of Shakespeare and those that only read his works for English class. The actors are energetic and bring life to Shakespeares words. I cannot wait to see what they come out with next!
Adrian Moran
The facility is wonderful and the productions are first-rate. The lobby areas have fantastic views. The Courtyard Theater is great design. One of Chicago's treasures.
Alejandro Garcia
Lot's of fun memories of this place. The lay out is meant to mimick the original Globe Theater in London (except in this iteration, the groundlings have seats.) Very cool, intimate space with good acoustics. Although it's called the Shakespeare Theater, they do not exclusively do plays by The Bard, but also works by Christopher Marlowe and other contemporaries, as well as new, avant-garde productions and dramatic readings.
Matthew Hajek
A nice place to watch a show. It had a very casual and relaxed atmosphere. The seating on the upper floors could be more spacious, but that's the only complaint.
AC Mikell (Awesome/AC Wolf)
Wonderful birthday present! Old school theater with a modern twist!
Jeff Neal
Great theater well run nice to be on the Pier with lake and city views good food nearby and the production of Emma was great a wonderful reflection on life and love all with good music and no annoying obvious overtones to current events or politics but still meaningful to the human condition and soul.
Kseniya Song
What an amazing experience! We saw Peter Pan with my 3 year old, what a fun and interactive play. I lived the atmosphere, talented crew, and our seats.
Patricia Kosar
Loved Six. So much fun. Engaging. Great lyrics and dancing. The personalities really popped! Wish I could have gone again. I hope they bring it back.
Danielle Tombolato
The Shakespeare Theater is such an excellent place to watch a very good play. The atmosphere is unbelievable and expect a very fun time after you watch the play. Navy Pier is the place to be in Chicago if it is your first time here!
Alejandro Valdes
The theater is amazing. If you can attend the informational events before the play they really assist in coming to a deeper understanding. Also if you are under 35 the theater has a special deal for you.
Charlie Wolf
Amazing venue, good seats and sound quality, overall presentation was worth the journey to get here! The view from the lobby is spectacular of lake MI as well. A+
Michael Suggett
Beautiful theatre! The acting is always amazing. Can't wait to go back. Also it's a great date night idea.
Lisa Hudson
Beautiful facility and great performances!! Prices are good and the staff friendly. I had never been here before though I visit Navy Pier often. I will be returning.
Irina Velitskaya
The new Chicago Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth has an amazing directorial vision. The lighting, staging and theatrical effects are precise and extremely well-timed. Moreover, the music really gets under the skin effectively and accentuates the play’s theme. The musicians were first rate, especially the percussionists. The makeup was extremely innovative, and created a genuinely unique look for the Weird Sisters, giving them a spectral appearance, and an unsettling combination of bald heads and beards, to say nothing of the startling way they appeared and disappeared on stage. You can tell that the director is a magician, both literally and figuratively. Overall, the physical production of the play was superb.
What’s more, the costumes were generally exceptional, with the exception of one minor character, a doctor played by Christopher Donahue, who wore a pair of anachronistic glasses and a shirt and suit that seemed to come from a production of Harry Potter.
The acting, on the other hand, was a different story. The single most important character in any production of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, was played by an actress, Chaon Cross, who was egregiously bad. Why? Because she didn’t truly understand the character she was playing and, accordingly, had no inner monologue. As a result, her acting was all on the surface and came across as if her only goal was to get through her lines without forgetting anything. She rushed through her lines using an inappropriately high voice that conveyed none of the emotion, manipulation or scheming that a true Lady Macbeth should display. Nor did she manage to communicate the ostensibly tender feelings she had for her husband that should allow the character to control and manipulate him. She should have come across as a powerful, controlling “puppet master,” but this crucial element of her character was utterly absent from her portrayal.
In the first scene, when she receives the letter from Macbeth, we don’t see her planning and scheming to convince Macbeth to commit murder. When Macbeth comes back home after battle, she, as Stanislavsky said, takes a “half step in acting” by pretending that she is going to sexually manipulate Macbeth, but does so half-heartedly. She has forgotten the principle that when you start a sexual scene, you have to consummate it.
As far as Macbeth himself is concerned, the actor portraying the role, Ian Merrill Peakes, did a merely workmanlike job. Much like Lady Macbeth, he seemed more focused on reading his lines than on portraying his inner turmoil. After he murders Duncan, he doesn’t seem distraught enough, and it isn’t very believable that he even committed a murder at all. There seemed to be no sense of consequence or anguish for either Macbeth or his wife. And, at the end, Lady Macbeth’s transition to insanity seems abrupt and unmotivated and arbitrary, rather than a convincing and frightening metamorphosis, as it should be.
Many of the minor characters were equally shallow. One of the rare exceptions was the alcoholic servant who described himself as a Hellhound, who created an incredibly creative and energetic character. It was clear that the actor really thought his character through, rehearsed thoroughly and acted, as well as improvised, impeccably. He demonstrated, in fact, how the acting should have been throughout the rest of the play.
In order for this production to be truly successful, the director must find a better actress to play Lady Macbeth. There are plenty of such actresses in Chicago — it is a mystery why he didn’t choose one. It is also a mystery why he allowed the actors to use a confusing jumble of Scottish and American accents. As it is, I can only give this production of the Scottish Play three stars out of five.
Matthew McElroy
I have personally been here for 2 performances and I have been pleasently surprised with how efficient the theatre as a whole is. I enjoy everything they have put on and couldn't be happier when I get to go back!
Jamie Butler
Q Brothers Christmas Carol is so much fun!
Lee Rudisaile
Great venue with an awesome cast.
Victor Zaveduk

Their education program is Outstanding. If you are a CPS teacher, participating in their Bard Core professional development is a MUST. It was one of the best learning experiences I've ever had.
Scott Hammond
A great facility. Validated parking and easy access. Saw Ride the Cyclone in their upstairs theater. Intimate, comfortable, great sight lines and an excellent musical.
Nick Kern
Enlightening productions, bringing the best theater in Chicago and the world together!! Has one of the most diverse selection of shows in the city. A beautiful venue modeled after the Swan theatre in London.
Rachel Kellison
Not a bad seat in the venue. Small venue. The production of Emma we saw was wonderful. Highly talented actors
Ron Wielage
Have experienced some wonderful performances at CST. Macbeth was not one of them. The new theater is interesting but not a reason to go.
Lisa D
I attended a play here and it was phenomenal. This is a hidden gem. Great seats anywhere you sit. A small but quaint venue.

Outstanding theater and theater company. Always quality.
Kathleen White
Best musical ever! The performers were all amazing!
Cassafrass
Great facility, quality shows. Pricey, but generally worth it. The only thing I don't like about it is wading through Navy Pier crowds to get in and out of the shows during peak tourist times.
Timothy Lloyd
The Christmas Carol done to hip hop music was wonderful. I've seen a few shows here and the acting has not disappointed me yet
Richard Landgraff
Fright Night. Audience practicing via a hand held device that registers your vote on actors portraying characters assigned by you vote. A clever manipulation of a audience survey to raise questions of the human mind as it perceives the value of people's preceptions.
Bruce Gilpin
Excellent version of McBeth directed in part by Teller of Penn & Teller fame. Not a bad seat in the theater but the seats could be a bit more comfortable.
Manuel Gregory
Great to go back to live theater, had a great time and felt very safe.
Ed Hotchkiss
Theatre is fantastic. The surrounding shopping mall needs modernising a bit (which looks like it's potentially taking place). Fairly hard to access being at the end of the pier.
Joshua Newkirk
Shakespearean art is a form that is dying within the Chicago community, but this establishment offers a wide variety of his works in such a beautiful location on the Pier. Talent that is held in this theatre is paramount to any other "competitors" and will be there for quite some time.
Kevin Birtcher
Intimate theatre makes every seat in the house a good one. And the production team has put on some of the best shows I've ever seen.
S Martin
Lots of fun. Not stuffy at all. There are bars in the lobby. You can take your drinks in the theater.
NICOLE ERAZO

Six was a refreshing, energetic, contemporary all out pop music staging of the six wives of Henry Vll. Thoroughly enjoyed it. See it before it heads to Broadway!
Whitney Booth
The theater is beautiful and there isn't a bad seat in the house. I cannot wait to see Midsummer's Night Dream and Macbeth in the Yard.
augustus “auggie” jareau
Six is amazing, this theatre is amazing, and it's right on Navy Pier, so if you get there before the show you can walk around!
Harvey Morris
The theater in the round is so cool and unlike most performance spaces in Chicago. The Navy Pier location makes it easy to plan an outing for dinner and a show.
Ron Perlman
Each experience is a magical and inspiring one. Innovatively produced and directed plays, great physical spce, and beautiful location. What better way to experience Shakespeare!
Jose Simbulan
Chicago "Shakes" features Shakespeare to Sondheim. The thrust stage basically insures that each seat is a good seat, just from different perspectives. Just be sure to leave enough time to navigate to and thru Navy Pier before your curtain time.
Christopher Griffin
You can never go wrong coming to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. They offer so much more than just Shakepseare plays, so be sure to try something new.
Corinna Christman
