Amazing location right next to the Charles River. Many events happen here throughout the year. Even though it is next to a major road of Boston, it is surprisingly quite, peace and calm when you sit in the park. It is best enjoyed in the evening I’d say, and there are many events held here throughout the year - except Winter perhaps. In the summer, there are outdoor movie screenings at the shell which is such a wholesome experience - just bring a picnic blanket, snacks and friends of course, and enjoy a movie under the stars ☺️

I was walking around the city and ended up here and saw a really good orchestra topped with a Costa Rican guitar player. One of those moments that you think "I'm glad I took the longer path". Acoustics are brilliant, being able to sit in the grass and enjoy is amazing as well.
Nicolò Mazzucato
Amazing place for concerts, especially at sunrise. Not really worth going there except for a concert.
John Nicol
Fantastic venue for open air events in the summer, overlooking the Charles River.
Derrick Au
Spent a relaxing Saturday evening here watching the Boston's Landmark Orchestra perform Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
Kevin Richardson
Beautiful architecture and sound. Very impressive! It can be awfully crowded on the fourth of July, so don't expect any standing space if you just show up for the concert without planning ahead. Families frequently stake out their space in the early morning, long before the festivities begin.
Alicia Schlattmann
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at Hatch Memorial Shell was amazing! Get there early for good seats and be prepared to stay all day, but SO worth it!
Foodie Traveler
Great to be at the summer concerts again! Check out the Boston Landmark orchestra on some Wednesday evenings in July and August . Bring a picnic and enjoy some classical music in a beautiful setting at the Esplanade
Joel Dick
Great place, had fur watching the Boston Pops performance for the 4th of July

Witness some nice concerts here 🌟🌟 …
Rita Greenberg
Such a lovely place and way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Here to hear the state-wide award-winning high school jazz ensemble in which my grandson is second trombone. Kudos to all, including the other jazz bands who also won in their respective regions. What an honor, as high schoolers, to have their excellence acknowledged and rewarded, by being afforded the opportunity to play on the same stage that hosts the Boston Pops! Call me a proud Nana 😊
Annie Lee
In night, it is dark. If there don’t have event, it would be boring.
Peter Squires
Great music venue, staff very helpful for people needing mobility assistance at drop-off and pick-up area.
Sarah Tucker
Seeing the Pops in person on the 4th will be a treasured memory. The shell is far more beautiful than it appears on television .
Linette Davis
Free Boston Landmarks Orchestra concerts on Wednesday nights during the summer. And free children’s movies on Fridays.
Janice Halpern
Landmarks Orchestra free concerts Wednesdays in July and August

This was the first time we drove up to see the Fourth of July celebration and it is worth the long drive. The last time was Williams lady performance back in the 60s and last week was no exception. Listening to the Boston Pops on a beautiful evening was enchanting.
The area in front of the amphitheater is a nice grassy area to spread out your blankets and enjoy the evening. As you would assume the music was excellent and the opportunity to talk to people from all over is a plus. I met a couple from England who wanted to experience a traditional fourth and they were so very pleased. Where we say we also could see the fireworks which were fun to watch. When the canon went off it was LOUD and so many people jumped. I think we forget how noisy those are.
I must admit the audience and the people of Boston were especially kind. My husband is in a wheelchair and the people couldn't have been nicer and thoughtful. So many people have support and assistance when needed. They asked first to make sure to respect him. Thank you Boston
William Sangertri
Celebrate 4 July here. Nice place
Jeff Dearman
An awesome place to watching a show. Many free or cheap events throughout the year including Movies, and concerts. The biggest event being the Boston Pops fourth of July Spectacular. Overall its a great spot along the banks of the Charles River.
Maryanne Mandelbaum
Beautiful setting for the Boston Pops 4th of July concert. Great to be back !
Lateef Mirza
Nice and relaxing to sit by the views of the marina.
Mithun Mohan
I have been here only during the summer. I think this is a great initiative at creating community spaces for recreation. The movie screenings especially are very dear to me. It's a regular start of the weekend activity for me. I am here most Fridays after work.
They have a whole list of activities going on in the summer and it's all a lot of fun.
The Shakespeare society's plays are also very nicely interpreted.
Audrey Pacious
Great view anywhere in the oval. Great sound system to hear everything. Nothing like seeing the Pops at the Hatch Shell
Nicole Smith
I've been to a few events at the Hatch Memorial Shell.
Going on July 3rd to see the Pops dress rehearsal here is one of my favorite Boston traditions.
Going to the Water Lantern Festival hosted here was cool - but not as streamlined as the more established events (like the Pops concert).
There are also cool statues and great views of the city - Boston and Cambridge - making it a nice stopping point any time.
It's in a lovely location along the river. By bike or foot it is easy to access - there are foot bridges across Storrow Drive making it safe to access. There is not a train stop super close though so plan ahead for that!
Jenna Sunshine
I love going to outdoor Zumba there on Tuesday nights at 6 pm all summer
AJ Johnson
What a wonderful, clean, and beautiful venue. My husband and I visited for the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, and we loved it; you could hear everything even on the far side of the Lagoon, I will admit that some of the Concessions are pricey but you are in the city and one must expect city prices. and for a free venue who can complain, if it is that much of an inconvenience bring a picnic. Also the have some great historic memorials throughout the small park and even an extremely avante guard play ground for the kids. I would warn though that there are signs warning not to feed the animals, such as birds and the like, adhere to the rules the geese are vicious creatures and unafraid of humans ( one stole my Breakfast sandwich clean out of my hands all while I was stareing him down, I hope he enjoyed his cousin the Turkey.
Elisabeth Krummel
Went on July 3rd for the dress rehearsal. Amazing venue, incredibly well organized, and a wonderful experience. A great way to see the show, without dealing with the huge crowd on the 4th
Dan Busler
A beautiful outdoor concert venue in the heart of Boston. This is the premier location for Boston Pops 4th of July celebrations, opera, orchestra concerts, pop music and so much more.
It is really a first class stage for any type of entertainment, the sound and lighting available is first class as well.
Sami Alajaji
Beautifully surrounded with the Esplanade and the Charles River this venue offers free classical concerts every Wednesday evening during the summer. It hosts a big event on July 4th, but that's an overly crowded night!
A+ for the organizers.
petra mulyani
Beautiful place to chill. You can have fun picnic with your family when there is no ticketed event. Enjoy the Charles River on the edge. Have fun walking, jogging, or biking
Fallen Angell
If you want “the Boston experience”, this is the place to go. In the summers they show movies on Friday evenings or you can make one of the many other events, including concerts and fundraisers! And the Queen of all events- the 4th of July celebration with the Boston Pops including some of the most awesome fireworks you’ve ever seen!!!

Visited for Wanderlust 108 - what a great venue and what an amazing event!
Willam F Rasschaert
I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a concert put on by the landmarks Orchestra and that was my first time attending and I was really really having a good time and it was amazing the atmosphere, the number of people that showed up, and the sense of community that this event showed me. I'm so sorry to have missed so many of the previous concerts.
André Wolff
Went there this summer with my kids for a cinema session. It was a beautiful evening and that golden gown was everywhere. There were some folks with chairs in the lawn but it as it wasn't packed we could see from the floor level. Problem was finding a spot away from pet poo. It's simply everywhere and we had to cover our eyes when laying down our towel. The projection surface was great, audio as well and the DJ kept everyone entertained until the movie was about to start. Will definitely return for more.
Andrew Brown
Very good acoustics. The music sounds great from the front and then very quiet from the behind the stage, if you need somewhere quiet to go. The architecture of the shell, itself is also wonderful to admire during any musical performance.
Kaitlin M
The Hatch Shell is such a wonderful spot in Boston. It's easily accessible and used throughout the warm weather for fun events.
-Orchestra Concerts
-Family movies
-Workouts
-Pop concerts
-Ballet and dance exhibitions
-The site for lots of charity walks
-Fourth of July concert and fireworks display (and rehearsal the night before)
And so much more.
Bring a chair or blanket and a picnic basket (check to make sure what security is like before deciding to bring any liquids--they do have a water bottle filling station usually). Bring bug spray, too!
There's a little snack bar nearby, and tons of paths to walk/bike. There's also a great playground right next to the shell if you have littles.
A true urban gem.

Boston Pops - July 4th Concert
My tween daughter and I visited Boston this week and were able to take in the July 4th concert at the Hatch Shell. This is very, very doable - as long as you are prepared in advance.
1. There is a morning security process where you are given wrist bands. Most routes to the hatch shell were closed off and we were directed to walk and stand on line at the Storrow Drive entrance.
2. The wrist bands are distributed at 9am. We arrived at 8:15am and that was absolutely fine for us. There was a very long line - about two blocks long - and at the very beginning some people had been camped out since the night before. Everyone in line was seated on the ground as they waited.
3. Just before 9am, security let the first block of people through to the Oval staging area. We got in with the second group at about 9:15am. At the Oval - your bags will be searched, and then marked with tape and you will have a security check as well. Then we were given the wrist bands. There is no charge to see the concert, or enter the grounds.
4. Once you have your wrist band, you are good for the day. They recommend coming back no later than 5:30pm.
5. We had a small blanket with us. We walked ahead to the Hatch shell and got an excellent spot about 6 rows back from the stage. The people who had camped overnight hopefully had first row or wherever they wanted to be, but there was hardly a difference from the first row to the first except obviously it was slightly closer.
6. We left our blanket spread out - and went sightseeing for the day. We returned at 6pm and the blanket was exactly as we had left it. I asked our "neighbors" and they said they also had gone out for the day.
7. Starting in the morning, there was a snack bar - which took credit cards, and kiosks which took cash. There is also a really nice playground between the Oval and the Hatch. Most people had books with them, or playing cards, as they waited for the 8pm concert to begin. Everyone was welcome to bring their own food but no alcohol.
8. The concert is televised. Starting at about 7pm they do last minute sound checks - and even tested the cannons for the finale. It's interesting to watch not only the concert, but the "behind the scenes" preparations during the commercials.
9. Make sure you grab a program which is in boxes back my the snack bars.
10. You should be aware that there isn't a formal "ending." - People seemed to leave at the end right before the fireworks started - because you really can't see them from inside the shell. We stayed until the end of the program - we sat on the side nearest the water, closer to the canon end. So we could see the canons go off, and in the distance we could see the fireworks. I was told that the MIT lawn has excellent views. Once the televised program is over, the fireworks continue with DJ patriotic music on booming speakers. As you walk back out of the Oval, you'll hear all of it and see the fireworks through the trees.
11. In the morning we were there for probably about an hour. At night we were there from 6pm to about 10pm .
I would gladly do all of this again, it was an excellent experience. I particularly loved the audience - they appreciate Music. They weren't there to drink or smoke - they were there to hear perfectly done performance, and to celebrate the patriotic atmosphere.
John Hughes
Fantastic public space and entertainment venue. Free summer concerts and movie nights are a must. The 4th Of July does get very crowded and crazy with thousands of patrons attending.
Jenell Fairman
Stopped in Boston on the 4th of July, on our way back into the US from Portugal. Perfect opportunity to join the excitement of the Boston Pops 4th of July festivities and the fireworks over the river. We were not within view of the shell, but sound was distributed well throughout the banks of the rivers to listen to the concert. Trees can make it difficult to see fireworks from the south side of park area, but there was still an amazing show to be seen. We were not disappointed!
Ed Anglin
A great Charles River evening summer music/presentation events place! Organizations have made the events fun with a wide range of local security, information & food fare that also makes it a family&friends time for sharing.
Richard Jarrett
Good place to spend the day outside.
Went to the 2016 Red Bull Flugtag, generally had a good day in this general area.
Will say there is a bit of a lack of water fountains around the area, and it can get very warm, so make sure you bring enough to drink!
Lenek Adams
The Hatch Memorial Shell is THE iconic building on the Esplanade. You can Google its 90-year history, but I can vouch that the acoustics of the 100-foot wide wooden structure are amazing. I have heard music groups raging from the Boston Pops to the J. Geils band to Rachel Platten and Queen Latifah, and the building rocks. I watched my daughter and her class from their nearby school dance on its stage to the music of Yo Yo Ma, just because he was there fiddling around and, why not? It is an accessible place (but only by foot) with a huge swath of lawn for seating and non-musical events and spectacular views of the Charles River. There is always a decent selection of food trucks and carts available. Restrooms are unlocked during the summer when the event is large enough.
Jeffrey Beatrice
Beautiful structure and grounds that includes wonderful views of the Charles River
K
Really nice place to run!
Roger Lovejoy
Great location for outdoor concerts, and other public gatherings. There is ambient noise from nearby Storrow Dr. Most concerts provide sound amplification, so that aids the audience listening capability.
Shawn McGrath
One of the many gems in Boston during the summer. Not only is 4th of July great but the many free concerts and movies really make it special. Even when there is nothing official going on you'll find games of frisbee and picnics and numerous other outdoor activities.
Fanuel Muindi
Awesome during the summer time. Park along Charles street if driving in.m for events. Otherwise, use the T. Enjoy!
Ajit Vyas
Great little concert venue right off the Charles River on the Esplanade. Hosts the Boston 4th of July concert every year. Be mindful of extra security measures for big events, including bag checks.
Patricia C
Brought my international students here to experience American culture...Nothing like being at the Hatch shell!!!
Will Koehrsen
A wonderful place to see a performance on the Charles Riverfront in Boston. I highly recommend seeing one of the free Landmark Orchestra free performances in the summer but this is also a great place for any performance.
Nicholas Wong
Great outdoor music venue.
Most of the free summer concert series are located here. Lots of room to spread out a blanket and hang out for the afternoon.
Cristina Gulla
Every time I come here I regret not coming here more often. The Hatch Shell not only hosts many free events throughout the summer (they rocked it with The Goonies last Friday), but it also sits next to the Charles River, which offers some pretty awesome views at sunset. Bring your friends, your mate, or go stag - either way, I'm sure you'll enjoy this place. Of course if there is a free event happening, you'll want to arrive early since most folks claim a piece of land with blankets and picnic gear long before the event begins.
Brendan Hunt
Beautiful location for an outdoor movie! get their late to avoid the obnoxious pre-movie trivia, I promise, you'll still have space to set up your chairs and movie snacks.
Alison Kan
Great place for concerts. The grass is great to sit on, and they often show movies here in the summer. Nice for bringing family or friends during events.
Tik Ishizuka
Went here to watch the red bull flugtag. Nice place right on the river. Big grassy areas to sit and picnic and watch a show.
Bill Taylor
Fantastic 4th of July show. A lot of fun, good food,Boston is a fantastic place to visit. Plenty to do and see. Will be back
Phil Harang
The best place ever for the 4th of July fireworks and concert. The only catch is getting home afterwards. It could take 3 or 4 hours just to get out of the city.
M J
Great place to celebrate the fourth of July. Clean, guarded, lighted. Crowded of of course but that's to be expected. Enjoyed the free concert!
Scott Broughton
Best July 4th Pop's Concert & fireworks.
Tommy Vo
This is a nice place to go biking and walking around. Awesome place to watch fireworks on 4th of July but can get crowded. Prepare to come really early
Bryan Beirola
Come here on Wednesdays in the summer for free orchestra concerts. Gets busy early. I recommend bringing chairs or a blanket. They also play movies here on Fridays.
Patrick R
I was expecting it to be a lot larger than it turned out to be. Didn’t go for anything in particular just saw it on the map and wanted to check it out in person. It is located by a really nice trail that goes around the water. Would recommend a 5 minute walk past.
Laura Tittle
Great place to hangout in the summer. A lot of fun free concerts (note: usually backpacks are not allowed at those events) and kayak rentals nearby.
Jacob Glik
Nice open area, great for a casual music experience. Would recommend bringing lawn chairs, or a picnic blanket at the least.
Reynard The Fox
Fun in summer for concerts but can get that claustrophobic feeling when crowded. None the less still nice and can be very fun with a picnic lunch.
Jennifer Chen
Last public concert for the summer, what a pleasant night.
Thomas Gallegos
The hatch shell is home to many public events in Boston, including the 4th of July concert with the Boston Pops and a fun summer movie series. Recently we joined hundreds of families on the lawn to watch a kids movie (about what pets do in the day). There are public restrooms, a cafe, a children's playground, and beautiful riverfront views. It is easy to access by foot from the Boston Common/ public gardens by crossing Storrow Dr. on the Arthur Fiedler footbridge at Arlington St.
JG DeBiasio
Nice place to listen to music. Bring your own chair. Kids can run in the grass.
Justin Libby
The grass in front of the Hatch is immaculate. Great area to people watch in warmer weather. Public restrooms are around behind the shell. Could use more shade on the grass area.
Robert Davis (Bob)
Perfect venue for any outdoor music event. Of course, the Boston Symphony on July 4th is a must.
Nguyet Nguyen
Right next to the river and highway, but there's not too much noise from street traffic. Really nice area to enjoy music.

This information from wikipedia
Because I don't know more about hatch shell.
The Hatch Shell is best known for hosting the Boston Pops Orchestra annually for the Boston Fourth of Julycelebration, but is also used for free concerts most weekends and many weeknights during the summer months. The grass pavilion in front of the stage has no permanent seating. There is a memorial nearby to Arthur Fiedler, first permanent conductor of the Pops

(Translation) Open concert venue. There are often free performances open to the public such as concerts and Shakespeare performances. It is worth checking their website both before and during the visit. The site is regularly updated. We were at the philharmonic concert. Sitting on the grass (bring a blanket to sit on) together with other art lovers and enjoying the weather that day. Located on the bank of a river and in a long park/promenade. Very nice and worth a visit

(Translation) A very nice place and worth visiting particularly in summer. They offer cultural events such as free concerts which is always appreciated. Be careful... try not to feed the ducks because later it will be difficult for you to get rid of them.

Un lugar muy lindo y digno de visitar particularmente en verano. Ofrecen eventos culturales como conciertos gratuitos lo cual siempre se agradece. Ojo... procura no alimentar a los patos porque después te será difícil librarte de ellos.

(Translation) The Esplanade is a great option for you to spend a pleasant day: you can walk, run or bike along the 32 kilometers along the Charles River.
If you are lucky enough to be in town between mid-June and late August, take advantage of Friday nights and bring a chair or blanket to spread out on the lawn, grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy a movie in the park under starlight and free of charge. This all happens in the DCR Hatch Shell; movies, musical performances and live concerts – always keep an eye on the schedule! Oh! And if you're in Boston during the 4th of July, you won't want to miss the fireworks celebrations that take place here!

(Translation) Take a leisurely stroll through Charles River Esplanade. You can see this hatch memorial shell in front of the lagoon if you walk while looking at Longfellow Bridge on the right back. MIT is on the opposite side (front). It ’s the best environment. The shell type has a structure with good sound. I want to listen to something with good melody, not noisy music.
