Reviews of Emerson Colonial Theatre
First time at the Emerson Colonial Theatre with my teen daughter celebrating her Birthday and we both love it!
Small but very classic Theatre. Costumer service was great! Very polite.
SIX was a great show to watch and my daughter enjoyed, after seen a few shows in Broadway we decided to check the Boston Theater (close to home) and was amazing.
My daughter came home to download the SIX soundtrack!
Watched Jesus Christ Superstar last night because I got tickets as a Christmas present. The show was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. They serve drinks and snacks; I had gotten a rosé slushy and party mix from the bar. The sound quality and overall production including the staging and lighting was utilized phenomenally. The actors were so talented and I would definitely recommend the show
Just saw Jesus Christ Superstar, 50th anniversary show. Crew from Toronto did a fantastic job staying so true to the original score. The set and choreography was outstanding bringing the story to life. This venue helps you feel like you are back in the old days with its ornate detailed woodwork, mirrors and stairways. The sound was great and the place was clean. Love this place.
Jesus Christ Super Star We love this place! Exquisite interior and an intimate theatre, acoustics and sound system were perfect. That seats are cozy and comfortable, if it says limited leg room, they mean it! If you are larger, choose another. No need to travel to Broadway when we have this! Always a great experience.
Beautiful theater, the balcony is tiered so that there is no bad seat and the acoustics are great! Saw "Six" and it was phenomenal!
Beautiful old theater with small seats and hardly any elbow space. Balcony seats provide a decent view for a more reasonable ticket price. Though part of the stage is obscured from the view, it's not critical and I didn't feel like I was missing anything.
Parking is plentiful around Boston Commons park, or in parking garage under the park.
There was no coat check available during Jan 6, 2022 visit.
I saw Six the musical which was phenomenal, acoustics/ambience are great and I recommend everyone go see it but I am here to talk about the theatre which is beautiful, yes. I had seats in the Dress Circle which are only accessible by stairs, be mindful of what heels you wear. It gave a great view of the stage but if you are tall (I am 6’2”) then your knees will be upset with you and if you’re on the larger side (I am a size 22/24) then hips will be upset with you.
Take this information however you need.
A dream theatre. Small enough to be warm and inviting for patrons new to professional theatre, but grand enough to remind us all what a luxurious night out can be. Sound was crystal clear, sightlines excellent (just the right amount of pitch), and the show was flawless. Lots of traffic around woman's bathroom and exit after though, but a small annoyance after an otherwise perfect visit.
Lovely old theater so expect minimal legroom. Otherwise beverage service and bathrooms on each level which is better than others. Great view of the stage from mezzanine and balcony. Nothing is too far away.
Beautiful theater small enough for views from mostly all seats.
The theater has been restored relatively recently and everything is in quite good condition with some ornate touches. My only complaint is the lack of leg room in the seats. Leg room is tight for an average person and if you're all the tall side, it can be slightly uncomfortable.
Historic, rehabbed, grand old theater of a relatively intimate size. Famous for opening musicals before going to Broadway.
Gorgeous theatre, excellent venue. Drinks were great, staff were very friendly and helpful. Seats are very tight but comfortable.
Beautiful theater. Good location. Tickets prices for Six were crazy high. It’s a shame that prices are for the 20% that can afford it. I hope Emerson students get discounts 🤑 …
Straight up pay for the Ambassador Lounge every time. It's insanely legit, and you get to be calm and away from the noise before the performance.
Staff are great, all views are great, BUT the seating in this old theater will snap you in half and make your legs numb for 17 days straight if you're anything over 5ft.
:D the pain is worth it.
absolutely gorgeous!! staff is super nice and the environment is lovely. i will say the stairs were rough on my older family members.
Just lovely! Clean, beautiful to look at all the employees we're all friendly and look like they were happy to be there great atmosphere! Good job everybody!
Saw "Six" as a day of walk up and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent theater, though at 6'2", the leg room was snug.
Loved the theater. Seats are on the small side but otherwise a great watching experience.
The architecture in this building is breathtaking and beautiful. The staff was friendly and helpful. We watched the Illusionists and the show was amazing and engaging. At times we were at the edge of our seats in suspense and at other times was laughing so hard tears were running down our cheeks. The Illusionists was awesome!
What a show! Moulin Rouge and the Colonial were made for each other. This show was fantastic, Aarona as Christian couldn't have been played by anyone better. Front row center balcony is the best experience in the theater. Well maybe the best besides the legroom.
Beautiful venue. I did not imagine that the inside will be so beautiful when I walked in through the front door. But once I was in, I was pleasantly surprised.
The theater seating is more comfortable than many other places I have been to in the theater district in Boston. More legroom.
We went to see Jesus Christ Superstar the show was wonderful and the musical score was awesome.
What a beautiful theater. We throughly enjoyed seeing "A Beautiful Noise" here. The staff was very nice.
Stomp was incredible!
The staff were helpful and available throughout the theater.
Leg space is an issue but that's expected from an older theater.
We came from Philadelphia. The Emerson is a beautiful facility with amazing architectural detail. The One Negative issue was the inside sales area overwhelmed the SRO crowd waiting to be seated. Our VIP lounge was not readily available and we had to stand for over an hour in the packed lobby. (That was not cool...we paid an extra$100 for the lounge, as I am semi disabled. It was exhausting.)
HOWEVER The show was "A Beautiful Noise! "
IT WAS FANTASTIC. . . Just outstanding in every way! Can't wait to see it again in NYC. ( I will bring my wheelchair. )
Great show, but seats are to damn small, I am 6'2" and I don't fit in the first row Balcony! I Looked behind me and saw other people jammed into seats, their seats giving little more room than I had. I won't go here willingly ever again.
Phenomenal staff!! Assisted me with my ticket situation quickly. Promptly escorted my mom to the wheelchair accessible bathroom and our seats! I felt extremely catered too!! Will be back!
Gorgeous theater and amazing performances! Recently saw Moulin Rouge and the balcony was a sweat box. Don't recall having an experience like that in the past, but people were desperately fanning themselves with programs and the whole place smelled like a locker room.
This theatre is absolutely beautiful, the acoustics are great, and the staff were bar none the most friendly and accommodating one could dream of encountering.
Ornate and recently renovated mid sized theater. Very tall and short design though. Views from the top balcony can feel like you are sitting above the stage, and be careful sitting there if you are afraid of heights. Also, leg room is very limited and can be uncomfortable.
Beautiful theater, seats are a bit straight up and leg room is cramped, but the actual seat is fairly comfortable.
This is such a beautiful theatre. We went here one evening to see Moulin Rogue and this theatre was such a treat to sit in. Already said before, this place is gorgeous. There are not too many bad seats in the house. So don't fret too much. Tall people beware.... : I would consider myself tall at 6'4" and my knee caps were right up against the backseat of the row in front of me. So you will be in somewhat minor discomfort during the show. All in all, awesome place.
Loved the place except for the fact that I fell going onto isle, & I was not the only one!!! They need to put reflective tape on the edge of the steps along the isles leading up to the seats.
Beautifully restored historic theater bringing in nationally and globally acclaimed Broadway shows, musicians, performers and comedians. Was lucky enough to see and be part of the renovations from the technology side. Probably the only time I'll be able to stand on a stage in such a gorgeous building. Cant wait to see some shows in the renovated theater.
Smaller venue which makes it worthwhile. Very clean old fashioned theater attention to detail throughout the entire building.
Had a wonderful time at the Emerson recently. Moulin Rouge was incredible! The staff was very kind and courteous. The theater is also beautiful. We had seats in the front row of the balcony that were awesome, as long as you don’t mind sitting up and leaning over the (velvet covered) railing.
I saw SIX tonight and it was AMAZING! I love this theater though the seats are on the smaller side.
I didn't get the chance to see the theater before it was renovated, but it looks incredible now. I went to see Moulin Rouge, and it looked like the theater was made specifically for the production. The details around the theater were amazing, and the sets were jaw dropping.
The theater itself was very small and very intimate, but the seats were comfortable and we had a great view of the stage from row k of the orchestra. My only complaint was that there were just a few restroom stalls for the entire theater.
We LOVED Moulin Rouge!!!! The performance exceeded my expectations in every way!
Nice venue. Orchestra seats were comfortable, but friends in the balcony thought it was very tight. If you're coming from the suburbs, Providence and Worcester can be a lot more convenient and quite a bit cheaper for the same productions.
Saw the Donna Summers musical and was a bit disappointed. The storyline was interesting and the dancing was quite good, but I thought the staging was poor and the singing seemed off compared to other tribute plays I've seen... Beautiful (Carol King), Jersey Boys, Queen, ABBA, etc.
Very nice venue for SIX: THE MUSICAL by BROADWAY IN BOSTON. Though 80 minutes, it was extremely enjoyable.
A stunning venue. Just walking into the lobby, you can't help but pull out your phone and take pictures. The staff was all extremely nice. We saw Zaz at one of her first US shows there.
Saw Gladys Knight and she was exceptional. Now for Emerson..this place is beautiful inside. The seats are HORRIBLE!!!! I had to squeezein my chair, I'm 5'3 and a size 16!!! My knees were touching the back seat of the gentleman in front of me. I finally had to turn them sideways and pray no one sat beside me. Unfortunately everyone was on top of each other, until I spotted some empty seats in the back. So I made a run for it. Would never venture there again for a show. I gave it 3 stars for the beauty. Massachusetts loves it's history but that place needs more updating.
Great looking theater putting on interesting and exciting shows regularly but the leg room is uniformly terrible across the board. Pretty good location for access from public transport, but don’t expect to find easy parking on a shoe night. Its proximity to Boston Common and Chinatown allows for a good way to pass time before and after your show.
Really beautiful theatre. The upstairs balcony area is a bit boring but the staff is very friendly and we saw Moulin Rouge! The set was amazing.
Saw Six, the Musical. Great venue, organized staff and really no bad seats
Great theater but for the balcony seating it was not easy to view what was happening on the extended stage ramps into the audience nor the side of the main stage when the performers where located there. Great show though!!!!
Beautiful theater. Be sure to walk up into the balconies and check out the view from the boxes during an intermission. Lots of velvet and gold. Great sight lines as long as you are not on one of the edges.
First time here and what an amazing theatre with incredible views all through the house.
I love this theater, i always feel transported to a wonderful imaginary space in this theater. Simply magical.
Beautiful theatre with really great and friendly staff. Loved my visit and the atmosphere created before and after the show. Great shows as well!
We saw "6" there is was tremendous, cheap parking all around and plenty of restaurants! I'll be back.
I recently saw a production of Six here. Lovely old theater. Great sound.
A very special classic theater, gilded on every surface, offering a real night out experience.
First row of the mezzanine is great, but beware of limited legroom. Great theater!
Loved the atmosphere and the theatre was impressive and the play was phenomenal!
Loved this stage!! The seating was easy to find bathrooms were clean and lines moved quickly. Drink prices are high but to be expected. Amazing show
Beautiful theater! Easy to get in and out of. I am short so seat spacing wasn't too bad but anyone over 5'2" might be uncomfortable with their knees touching the seat in front of them.
Gorgeous space, and the entire theater has been restored and remodeled. Be aware the seats are very small, so don't carry a lot of coats/bags with you.
Beautiful theater! Enjoyed seeing SIX there.
Saw the play BEAUTIFUL NOISE, wonderful performance and music, great sound system. Still waiting for my knees to unlock from the seats!
Gorgeous old theater with not a bad seat in the house!
... one of greatest theaters in the World .. in terms of art form, it closely resembles the Library of Congress in D.C. ..magnificent!
Saw the Neil Diamond musical! Fantastic!!!
Fantastic venue. Lovely staff. Great ambiance.
The seats on the balcony are not made for larger individuals.
Beautiful, old historic theater! Excellent acoustics! Public parking was right around the corner (2 minute walk).
Beautiful venue. Great sound. Easy concessions and facilities.
Lack of sufficient ushers (e.g. one for each theater door) created some confusion and disorderly rush of people locating their seats. Many cases of wrong seats taken.
Beautiful restoration. It's a shame they don't have a real box office. The ticket site they recommended is like legalized scalping. How does one but tix at ticket price?
Beautiful theater, and though busy and a small bit cramped, it’s understandable for it’s location and age. Fantastic sound quality and all around a wonderful night and opportunity to see Neil Gaiman!
Beautiful venue. Seats a little close but not unexpected.
It's one of Boston's gems. The seats might be too cramped for people over a certain height though. I'm 5'9" and my knees were barely clearing the seat in front of me.
The show was lit. The venue was a little quirky.
Saw the Neil Diamond tribute and loved it! The music was great and the view from the balcony was perfect.
Came here to see The Plaza Suite. It was a great time. My seats were in the orchestra section- great view. These were row L from memory.
Very small seats, not much leg room
Just saw Jesus Christ Superstar, the show was phenomenal!! I loved the staging, the music was great, the cast was amazing and Judas stole the show. He was incredible, beautiful strong voice. Bravo!!
The seating is super close but the view was so awesome! We sat in the Dress Circle section at Summer: The Musical.
Beautiful theater but there was a metal detector security checkpoint requiring the emptying of pockets to gain admittance. This may have been because there was some specific threat associated with seeing Fiddler On The Roof. If it turns out this is a blanket policy, you can be sure I'll change this from a five star to one star review.
There was a trip downstairs for the men's room, which is OK, but I was glad to see there was an accessible/gender neutral ("single use" I think they called it) bathroom on the first floor for those that need them. As it happens, my wife needs an accessible facility, so it was appreciated.
The audio is good, and even in the last row (behind a pole!) the entire stage was easily visible.
Again, as long as other productions do not require an invasive security checkpoint, I would highly recommend this venue for a pleasant theater-going experience.
Great space. Got to see Moulin Rouge there yesterday. Phenomenal show and set!
The venue was beautiful. The bathrooms were kept clean. Full bar, nice selection of munchies available for purchase. My only complaint is the seats were not comfortable. I am 6' tall this is usually a problem in most venues, but over all a great place to see a show🍿🎭 …
Nice theater. Leg room would be nice saw Neil Diamond story was well done.
Beautiful ornate interior. Staff and security both helpful. Seating and sight lines toward the stage are comfortable and audible acoustics are clean and crisp.
Saw David Byrne's American Utopia show here and it was incredible. Great, old theater with a lot of charm, most seats seem great for viewing. Just a warning, if you book seats in the upper tier, there is a bend in front of the front row to the railing that blocks the view slightly. Other than that all seats are great!
Beautiful inside but extremely pricey water....bar...horrible popcorn and snacks. Smokey mountain christmas was very good.
Beautiful! Wow, what a gorgeous theatre. They have such great shows. I saw Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Live and it was a blast. Seats are pretty comfy, sound is pretty good, and serves food. Overall I had so much fun here and I highly recommend going if you are in Boston.
Theatre is beautiful. Seats are a little too close together which makes it a little harder for someone with a mobility issue. If someone in the middle of the row needs to get out, the whole row has to get up and move too. But we still had a wonderful time and would go back for another concert.
Nice Theatre, view from the balcony is perfect!
Beautiful venue! Fantastic, friendly, efficient staff!
This theatre has been updated. There are bars and restrooms on all three levels. HOWEVER, the seats in the dress circle were made for smaller people. We're average size people and our knees were hard up against the seat backs in front of us. The larger than average people on either side of us were doubly cramped - from the sides as well as front to back. We were really uncomfortable and it put a huge damper on our experience of the performance.
The temperature was high, and the lines at the bar were long - too long to get water during the intermission.
We will not come back to the Colonial, sadly. Even a lower ticket price wouldn't make up for the discomfort of being wedged into an overheated space.
We hope the theatre will be updated to adjust the row spacing.
Beautiful, beautiful theater. Good seating layout and if you are willing to go to the third floor--you will still see and hear the on-stage action I promise--you can find good everyday ticket prices. Very limited legroom through, so aim for the aisle seats if available. The theater is off Boston Common in the heart of the theater district with lots of parking and dining options nearby. There is no coat check (con) and no outside food allowed in the theater, including to-go bags if you grabbed an early dinner pre-show, so plan ahead. Otherwise an impressive venue and very appropriate for both mainstream and quirkier shows. Very happy to see this lovely place refurbished and reopened.
Please note, this is a review of the theater, not the awesome Plaza Suite performance that we saw there. The theater is so beautiful but it suffers from cramped seating and no place to check your coat. I am six feet tall and my spouse is 5' 2" but both our knees were crushed into the seat back in front of us. Add to this all the winter coats having to be stuffed around each of us and it was rather unpleasant experience. The drink and snack selections were good with the usual exorbitant theater prices. Make sure you really want to see the play you are going to because you will be uncomfortable for the entire performance.
It's a really beautiful theater and not too big. All floor seats are great. The aisles are a little steep, but that means the row in front if you is low enough to see over. Not great for tall people to sit particulally comfortably.
If you're not on the first floor, expect lots of stairs. Also, seats are very small. However, the theater itself is gorgeous and the size is perfect for a great experience. Went to Moulin Rouge (AMAZING) and didn't care that I was in the last row of the balcony.
Love this old beauty of a theatre. Not a bad seat. Great sound system. Nice upgrades!
The seats are pretty small and uncomfortable. The drinks were concert price $12-15 for a beer $18 for whiskey and coke. $8 bottle water. However the venue is small enough to keep it fairly intimate. The staff was extremely polite and helpful and you could tell they were happy to be there and enjoyed their jobs. I would go again.
Gorgeous decor, friendly staff. Only complaint is the seats are so close. Our knees were right against the seat in front of us. We were joking that people were shorter when they built the theater! We saw Moulin Rouge which has amazing sets and costumes... Fit right in with the native decor of the theatre. Fantastic experience all around.
Beautiful restored theater. Seats are cramped...if you are 5'10" or over you knees will be snug against the seat in front. Cushions are still comfortable. It seems all seats are good with regards to the view.
NOT DISABILITY FRIENDLY!
I looked everywhere for this information and it is not listed. The theater is beautiful, lovely assistance, but the balcony is indeed up 4 flights of stairs and as noted in other reviews the seats are quite narrow with very limited leg room. Anyone with mobility issues really should avoid this theater!
I'm about 6ft tall and 200 lbs. The seats were borderline too small for me and definitely too small for some of the taller folks. The rest of the place was great unless you had to use the restroom. All in all, the show we saw was fantastic, so make your sacrifices for the performing arts. It'll probably be worth it.
Small theater with almost universally good sight lines to the stage. They did a great job with the renovation. Be warned, if you are over 6' tall, the seats are going to be tight, like airline tight.
Great place to view a show. Our seats were in the Dressing Circle which offers are great view of the entire stage. The theatre staff is very friendly and helpful. The only drawback is the leg room is very tight
So historic stunning! Lighting and interior are so marvelous 🌈❤️🙌🏻 …
Beautiful theater but uncomfortable seating - at least in the mezzanine it is. I'm only 5'4" and found these seats very tight. You also feel the movement of the people sitting behind you and hear their laughter/applause/conversation right in your ear. It takes quite a bit of concentration to enjoy the show. Our guests that had orchestra seats did not have the same complaint - they were more comfortable. But they had a different problem: I have season tickets for Broadway in Boston and got my guests tickets as add-ons. Apparently their seats were already promised to season ticket holders as well and my guests were moved to different seats a few rows back.
Get there early because of security. Bring cash for concessions, at least up stairs.
Show was great but staff was a tad rude. Furthermore when audience members were chatting loudly during the performance they did nothing to stop it.
We saw Moulin Rouge here recently. The seats are comfortable, the theater is small enough that views are good from any seat. The sound was great where we sat--halfway back in Orchestra.
The bathrooms were large and well-lit.
Concessions were ridiculously expensive, as one would expect. A bottle of water cost $6, but it did come in an extremely stylish bottle.
This place was absolutely incredible. Beautiful theatre, amazing show! The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. My friend and I had to come straight from the train station (after a very long day of traveling because our bus was delayed...) and so we had our luggage. The staff was so kind and they let us put it in an office, even though they explicitly state on their website that they have no bag check. We were the ones inconveniencing them and they we still amazingly kind and willing to help! The show (Moulin Rouge) was absolutely amazing and the kind staff really made our experience great!!!
The theater itself was great, with regards to the decorum and sound quality. The production of Moulin Rouge was also spectacular. However, my seats (balcony) were horrible narrow. So much so that my knees hit the barrier if me legs weren't too one side it the other. By the end of the show my knees and ankles hurt bad for being Twisted in such awkward positions. I realize these are the inexpensive seats, however you shouldn't have to suffer to enjoy a performance. I am average of average weight and height at 6 ft.
Went to see Moulin Rouge, the theater is absolutely beautiful and the show was incredible. I was in the balcony row D, and this is the view, it really seems like there are no bad seats in the theater, except for the very edges, which look like you may lose view of a small portion of the respective side of the stage. Drinks are expensive and it gets a bit toasty inside during the summer, but if you have the chance to see a show here, be sure to take it!
The theatre is absolutely beautiful and exquisite but the seats are desperately needing more leg room. My height is 5'3 and I admit having short legs and I felt so cramped. I couldn't even move my legs once seated. I can't imagine anyone taller than me to be able to sit comfortably. Thank heavens the show Moulin Rouge held my attention and I could block out the discomfort of my leg circulation cut off. .
An absolutely stunning venue! We went to the Saturday showing of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The Great Cheesy Movie Circus Tour show and had an absolute blast! Parking at a nearby garage was cheap with the discount code on the Emerson Colonial website. Drinks and snacks were served in the lobby and you were allowed to bring them in to the show. Overall it was a great evening and we really enjoyed ourselves!
The show, Smokey Mountain Christmas Carol, was great. The theater is charming but the seating was reminiscent of visiting my kids kindergarten. Tiny, no leg or foot room. We were in the dress circle, I don't know if that makes a difference.
Beautiful theater with a gilded and mirrored lobby that reminds you of Versailles. Theater is small enough where you can see the stage really well even at the top two rows of the balcony. Seats are really cramped though, so don't bring large bags. You also have to go through security and dump out any water.
The Emerson Colonial Theater was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! My Boyfriend and I saw Kenny G and he was ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!! I am a huge fan of Kenny G and I am soo soo glad to have gotten to see and watch him!! HE WAS TRULY AMAZING!!
Absolutely beautiful theater, but those seats had to have been designed for a four year old child. I am 6 ft and now have permanent dents in my knees from having them shoved into the seat in front of me for two hours at a show. My friend who was with me is 5' 2" and maybe 110 soaking wet and she barely fit in the seat! While the shows there are always great, its sometimes hard to enjoy them when your legs are being sliced in half by the seat ahead of you.
The remodel of this theatre is pretty incredible. It has an amazing turn of the century feel, with modern amenities. The only thing I did not like was the bar and merch setup. They are next to one another in the entryway to the theater itself and it makes for a very inconvenient and congested area. Once you get past that, the theater itself is remarkable. I would recommend anyone see a show here.
We went to the renovated Emerson Colonial Theatre to see Moulin Rouge. What an incredible experience and spectacular musical production. The show is magnificent and the whole production is unique and special.
The theater looks beautiful ,but the balcony seats are tight. No matter what, it was worth it every minute of it. We loved it and highly recommend this show before departs for Broadway.
This was my first time at the Emerson Colonial Theater. It is a beautiful space with an intimate feel. However, the rows are very close to one another. I am 5'1" and my legs were cramped the whole show. Another complaint I had was that they wouldn't allow us to bring in our leftovers from dinner. I'm sorry but this is Boston either you walked there, took an Uber or parked in a garage far away. Nobody is going to pop open their leftovers during the show. It was an extremely cold night and we had to walk all the way back to our car. It would be different if there was a no food policy but they were selling both food and snacks to be taken into the theater.
The stairs are a little awkward and the seats are small and tightly packed, but such is the way of older theatres. The space itself is absolutely beautiful and even up in the balcony you have a great view of the stage.
The theater is beautiful, opulent and very classic. We watched the Moulin Rouge play last night in the mezzanine level and the show was spectacular, spectacular. That said here are some criticisms and tips (if you get a chance to see a show here I highly recommend it):
1. The seats are small and cramped. I believe the orchestra pit seats are bigger but they're very expensive.
2. The bars are jammed and you may not make it back to your seat in time for the show to begin during intermission... There is a beer and wine bar and a liquor bar. Both only had two bartenders. So plan accordingly.
3. The attendants are very helpful but strict about letting you in before a number ends. If you hit the lavatory during a scene, expect to wait outside until the scene/number ends.
4. Do not park at the lagrange st. lot unless you like having your car crapped on by homeless guys.
5. Be prepared to follow the herd when the show ends. It's a large theater and a large entrance/egress but an absolute truckload of people.
Almost all seats have a good view! The pillars are small in diameter so they are not a big problem. The seats are quite close together, though, so if you're tall, be prepared for a tight fit and small leg room. I saw Moulin Rouge at the Emerson Colonial with my wife when it opened there and had a good time.
Gorgeous theatre. Saw A Beautiful Noise and it was fantastic.
So I saw six yesterday it was amazing
Absolutely appalled at the blatant disregard of the house rules that require patrons to keep their masks on if they are not actively eating or drinking. The ushers were helpless
It's a very nice traditional-looking theatre. We had a good view from the mezzanine. It's conveniently in the center of the city right next to the common.
My only complaint is that there is little room outside of the theatre for the crowds (both on the street and in the building). Crowd control suffers, as a result.
Fiddler on the Roof was great.
The theater is spectacular
(although the seats are really cramped)
Such a nice architecture, beautiful inside and plenty to look at.
The temperature was comfortable and the people were super friendly.
This is an absolutely beautiful and historic building! A true step back in time. The acoustics were terrific even from side stage seating and the staff was friendly and helpful. I can't wait to see a theater performance there!
Theater is lovely, but the rows are very tightly packed together, at least in the balcony. I was not able to sit with my knees straight in front of me. Saw The Play That Goes Wrong, which was wonderful!
Beautiful venue for stand up comedy (and other performances). Feels surprisingly intimate for it's size.
Beautiful place to see a show with a few buts... There are no elevators so bringing my senior relatives was a challenge. Drinks are budget shattering. Seats are tight for anyone approaching 6 feet tall.
Enjoyed the amazing old theater, and a tremendous show, but the seats were uncomfortable with little legroom. There are a lot of stairs, some steep, which could be a problem for people with mobility or balance issues, or problems breathing.
Beautiful and full of history. Staff are amazing 🩷 …
The play was top notch. Seats if you have long legs are not great. I'm 5ft 6inches but have long legs. For a couple of hours it's ok. Very clean, really pretty.
Great seats downstairs with just enough leg room. Mezzanine and Balcony are very cramped. Very professional and friendly staff.
The theater looks quaint and has this old baroque charm, but omg... the seats on the mezzanine and balcony have less leg space than the smallest airplane. I'm 5'2'' and I could barely fit. If I have the choice in the future, I will choose a different theater or definitely get orchestra seats which seem a tiny bit more spacious.
Gorgeous theatre and the David Byrne show was truly amazing. I like that they offer a few snacks and drinks. Would be great to have a gluten free snack choice available too.
Gorgeous cozy theater with multiple bar areas. The cocktails are more interesting than the Boston opera house. There are frozen drinks. Also offer unreal chocolate candy. Seats are comfortable but during winter it would be best to check heavy coats.
Beautifully restored venue. Definitely a theatre palace from a long gone era. Good views from most everywhere in theatre. Very good sound. Could use more bathrooms for men and women.
Beautiful venue in Boston. Be prepared for extra security with metal detectors. If you are sitting on the lower level, try to be forward of the balcony otherwise you may not get good sound support and miss a lot of dialogue.
This theater was recently restored and it is beautiful. The levels are tiered, I don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. Saw David Byrne’s American Utopia there Saturday.
Came here to see Moulin Rouge and was super impressed with the facilities, the organization, and the staff. The construction on the renovations pushed the start date of the show back and we had to re-book to a later show so we got stuck with partially-obstructed seats, but from the look of it the renovations were worth it. I would definitely come back here from NJ to see another show, but make sure to book center seats!
Was there for the moulin rouge show and the theater was perfect. They had just gone thru a restoration and did a fantastic job. Everything is clean and shiny. The seats are comfortable as well with support and cushioned seats. Beautiful theater and glad they kept it the way it is.
Acoustics are very good, seats are close to the stage. But many of the seats are extremely cramped, and the selection of concessions at intermission was ridiculously lousy. Overall, the Opera House is a better experience, except perhaps in the really cheap seats.
Very nice theater. Seats are a bit tight for anyone 6 foot or greater. Alcohol is expensive. Climate control, at least orchestra center was very good.
Not a bad seat in Orchestra section. Leg room is circa 1900, but otherwise the theatre is a gem; immaculate; a thing of beauty. Moulin Rouge, the pre-Broadway production was over-the-top unique, superb performances, dancing, music. NYC, better get on line for tickets, this is a monster coming your way.
One of the most beautiful theaters I've ever seen. I loved seeing Moulin Rouge there bc the opulence of the theater seemed to match the lavishness of the production. If you sit in the balcony section go towards the middle even if you're a few rows back. We were in the 2nd row at the very end of the row and our view was occasionally compromised bc of it.
Recently refurbished. Lovely theater. Seats are small and very cramped. Wait service to your seat is a nice touch as are real glasses for your beverage (not plastic).
One of the most beautiful theatres I've ever been in. Simply, a treasure that has been saved by some very smart people. Thank you to those who made that happen.....keeping it from being a victim of modernization. This place is as much of a star as the act that you will see in it.
We saw Kinky Boots at the Emerson Colonial Theatre last night. Awesome show and a great venue. Our seats in the dress circle gave us a good view and we had a great time.
I decided to take myself out to see Moulin Rouge because I heard from so many strangers how fun and beautiful it was. It did not disappoint in the slightest. The Architecture in the theater is stunning, and the show itself was exciting and entertaining.
Can get a bit crowded and the entrance aisle may be a bit narrow. The theatre itself is just gorgeous, though the speaker system can be improved. A great place to enjoy a show.
Any seat seems good. If it's a full house it's hard to get in and out.
Okay but this theatre is absolutely stunning and elegant. Moulin Rouge was a fabulous show and I hope everyone has a chance to see it (either in Boston or on Broadway) because the set was perfect and the theatre fit with the show so well! But I look forward to seeing other shows (though nothing compares to Moulin Rouge) at the Colonial Theatre.
The theater looks a little dingy considering it was just remodeled. They definitely need more ushers. And i was disappointed their scanners didnt work for my mobile ticket, so they made me walk back through the crowd to get a paper ticket.
Very nice, the speakers were loud and very visible. However the seats were a bit uncomftorable, I couldn't find a comfortable position. It was well worth the show though, I saw the illutionists, would recommend
The theater was beautiful and kept very clean and the staff were very personable and helpful.
Beutiful theatre dodnt seem like there would be a bad seat in the house
The show was awesome but the seat suck
This place really takes you elsewhere. Nicest theater I've been to. The fact that they had my daughter's favorite french singer and that I was able to offer it to her as a birthday gift, and how wide her eyes were was the cherry on top.
Such an historic place for live theater.
Interesting historical tour of this beautiful theater.
Unbelievable talent.. The best but..
Their repitore was obscure.. With hundreds of classic Disney songs to delight a wide age range they sang songs that most had no clue where they were from. The performance showed off their incredible talents.
Love the old theater feel of the place and they bring in different and interesting shows. Their prices for drinks are pretty steep, so save having a glass of wine for after the show someplace else.
Seats were a wee bit cramped, but not uncomfortable. The rugs and bannisters are in need of freshening....but they were not dirty. Staff was really helpful and pleasant.
The renovation of the theater was well done; the theater retained the charm and intimacy of the old playhouse despite a refresh. The performance I saw was a warm up for Broadway, proving that the Colonial can handle perfomances of any caliber.
Saw a Rogers and Hammerstein musical. The Theater was well cared for, nicely restored. Was able to move about theatre with relative ease even with a full house.
Lovely theater. But if you are over 6 feet tall stand. Dress circle is un sit able worse than a cheap airline
Super quant nostalgic. On our visit on 3/12/22 they were SUPER persistent about mask wearing and having vax cards
The Colonial seems to be smaller than the Opera House and has been restored in the past few years. The sight lines are good, but the leg room is a bit tight.
Summer: The Donna Summer Musical
Fantastic show.
Beautiful Theatre. The balcony leg room is tight and there is now elevator but the place is a fantastic venue to see a play.
Love this theater. So gorgeous. Acoustics are fabulous!
Saw SIX, amazing musical.
A beautiful theater! They serve drinks and snacks.
Haven't been in a while. Recently got tickets for a show. They charged a $4 fee AND a $25 Service fee for buying over the phone. I'm handicapped, how can I get in to Boston to get tickets? I can barely get there for the show since I live 30+ miles away.
Great place for a show!
Be warned, however, there is no elevator for those who cannot walk up stairs, and the seats do not have any leg room.
Decent customer service if you have patience and willing to compromise. It is disappointing what happened for the opening, but it was an unforseen situation. Moulin Rouge was highly anticipated, and the demand exceeded the expectation (good thing), but that however, resulted to some negative interactions because of the delay. Regardless of how it handled, the show itself and venue are utmost gorgeous. Even with comparison to the Pantages in LA or the ones in broadway. I hope Moulin Rouge opening here would create an opportunity for it to go Broadway, and even a tour (Maybe even West End). 😊
Wonderful theatre. A bit tight but they have concessions.
Absolutely gorgeous theater. The leg room in the balcony seats is not great especially if you have longer legs.
Saw Beautiful Noise. Truly amazing show.
A great, beautiful, old theatre without a bad seat for viewing, it would seem (though the leg room is awfully tight).
Elegant old classic theater
Nice theater to bring the family to see shows/Performances. Very elegant theater, rich history, and you feel like you're back in the 1900's sitting there.
Clean, historic, excellent acoustics, very accommodating staff
Beautiful theater. However, seats are very tight and not comfortable. Need elevator for handicapped.
Beautiful theater, saw the amazing Moulin Rouge. Only complaint is that the seats are very close together, not a lot of leg room
Amazing performance and theater is just beautiful.
Beautiful theater with excellent acoustics, but there is insufficient legroom. There were a number of people around me who had the same problem.
It's a nice theatre, but as a tall guy, the seats are waaay too close together.
Saw Moulin Rouge Here and it was fantastic! Beautiful!
Beautiful theater, great ushers, and amazing shows! So glad they didn't end up turning it into a dining hall!!
Show was great, staff is very friendly. Pricing not bad for what you'd expect to be charged at a venue. Seating is very cramped
Only reason I can't give 5 stars is the seating was clearly not intended to accommodate anyone taller than say 5'6" in height...other than that, the theater is great.
The show was great, the staff friendly and stage was nice but if you have a size 13+ shoe your feet won't fit
This is a beautiful theater with traditional elements, combining to make exciting theater possible. David Byrne's "American Utopia" show was intimate and exhilarating.
Not a bad seat in the house
Watched fiddler on the roof. The show was great, and the venue is gorgeous, but the seats were too small and close apart in my opinion.
Beautiful Victorian, elaboratly decored small theatre with balconies etc...excellent views from all seating. Seating is a little tight. Great staff and guidance.
Everything about the theatre was delightful. Easy parking and plenty of nearby restaurant choices. Only take away for the construction out front.
The show was wonderful, my wife loved it
From: Paul Booker 👍🏽 …
It is a beautiful theater.
I enjoyed my experience there.
The employees are so friendly.
Especially Alan and.
The balcony seating is really, REALLY tight. We are about people and couldn’t imagine how anyone above 5 foot 5 can sit in the seats.
Beautiful and intimate theater in the downtown area. Great seating throughout but a little tight
Would have rated higher except there was a lot of confusion during a fire alarm going off prior to a performance. We were told to evacuate yet other employees were still letting other patrons in the front door preventing us from evacuating.
Such a gorgeous theater. Worth the visit from Minnesota to see Moulin Rouge. I can’t imagine there is a bad seat in the house.
Saw Moulin Rouge here and that was amazing! The theater was old and beautiful but possibly as things are with old theaters even the 8pm show was swelteringly hot.
Amazing shows and friendly staff, but painfully bad legroom. Due to the age of the building is a little difficult to get around at intermission.
Beautifully restored theater.
Great matinee experience! 💕 …
Went to see Kinky Boots and might have been best play/musical I have ever seen. Colonial is great venue but legroom is a problem.
Seats are do crammed. Not comfortable. Seating staff is excellent but management was not helpful or very compassionate. Play was funny
Seats are very small and very close to seats in front of you, but it is a beautiful theatre.
Great visibility, great acoustics!
Great shows but very cramped uncomfortable seating. By the end of the show I'm in a lot of pain.
Recently remodeled and looks great, they have had a bunch of quality shows here since reopening. Certainly worth going here to check out any show that suits your fancy.
The staff were amazing and friendly. The building is beautiful and there is a great view of the stage even from the balcony.
Fantastic Neil Dimond was amazing must see
Wonderful classic theater to enjoy a show in. Only downside is the difficulty of getting in and out of the bathrooms!
A beautiful theater with good site lines. Next time I would try to avoid the upper balcony.
Colonial is cramped and uncomfortable. It's a beautiful theater and often puts on great shows so take the good with the bad.
One of the old theaters in Boston that have great character and atmosphere. Unfortunately the seats are a little tight.
Nice old theater that I'm glad they saved. Comfortable seats and nice views from most of the seats.
Very nice
But seats are small and very expensive wine and beer
Fiddler on the roof was awesome
Great cast
Beautiful theater Amazing show
This is a beautiful theater, we saw cinderella and it was pure magic from seats 1 and 3 in dress circle level.
Saw Fiddler on the Roof and it was fantastic. Only negative was the seats which had no leg room.
Beautiful inside! Great acoustics! So far every seat I had was wonderful
Great show, however our seats in the dress row section were very cramped.
Trouble getting inside, but we were still ontime inside the building. however we were not allowed in to the theater and missed first 10 minutes.
Beautiful venue!
The design and ambience are great. The show we attended was also great. Knowledgeable ushers, helpful concessionaires.
Unco.fortable seats, narrow hallways, small bathrooms. Go only if the show is really worth it.
Very comfortable theatre and a great place to see any show.
Beautiful theater, but no leg room, and I'm only 5'8"
Comfortable, beautiful, fun! There is parking close by, and it was a quick (and pretty) walk through The Commons.
Great views from every seat, historic architecture is awesome, delicious snacks at the bars!
Great venue but seats are tight my knees were touching the seat in front of me
Beautiful old theater but very cramped. Narrow stairs, hallways, seats .
Nicely restored old theatre, but seats are tight and uncomfortable for most normal sized men.
excellent David Byrne's performance
Performance was grait and very comfortable seats. No line in the buffet.
The theater itself is gorgeous, and the staff is all very friendly and helpful!
May be a historic location but the seating is super cramped but that's the norm for old Boston theaters.
Beautiful old and elegant
Beautiful theater, nice staff, expensive drinks as expected, bathroom lines moved fast!
Very neat & elegant theater but charged $6 for warm bottle of water
Beautiful theater, comfortable and fairly spacious seats.
Beautiful venue, and amazing performances. I definitely recommend the colonial theater
Not much room for my knees!
Newly refurbished, opulent, comfortable, great sight-lines from rear orchestra (for David Byrne's "American Utopia")
It's a nice older theatre, but the balcony seats are unbelievably cramped for a tall person
Nice theatre, helpful ushers. Seats are a little small though.
Great setup with minimal obstructions. You can get a great view from any seat
Saw SIX
Saw A Beautiful Noise - FANTASTIC!
Wide seats with good padding.
One the best venues in Boston
Matthew Broderick & Sarah Jessica Parker in Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, working out any kinks before moving the production to B'way.
The theater is beautiful. The security/metal detector check not so much.
Love this restored theater in Boston's theater district!
Great show and friendly staff. Drinks were as to be expected, way too expensive.
Beautiful theater, but could improve on the management of the lines to get in.
Beautiful renovations were done. A great place to see a show.
Awesome theater, saw Cinderella there; it was a well done show
Awesome performance. Seats were pretty small and tight.
Listened to Zazz concert. Apparently a lot of young people can sing in French. Who new?!
Love it
The seats are way too close together to the point where I was so uncomfortable I couldn’t enjoy the show.
Beautiful venue, clean restroom great views of the stage.
Beautiful renovation job. The theater feels more like a palace
A bit over the top, especially with the gold cherubim. Decent seating and sound though the ventilation is curious.
I've seen a few performances here and I love it! Great venue!
Gorgeous theatre. Seats are on the small side.
"The illusionists" was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Do not miss it!!!
Artistically beautiful but seating is tight for long legged people.
Very neat antique theater, great place to catch a show
Spectacular show, beautiful building, professional staff
So excited for this place to open again!
We saw Samin Nosrat and it was a wonderful experience! Clean and beautifully restored.
Cramped seating, slow security, and un-ushered talking and singing patrons detracted from an otherwise great experience.
Great show but the seats are terrible.smaller than an airplane seat.
Beautiful Theater!
Nice spacious theater
Beautiful theater. Great play. Fun evening
Great venue.
Beautiful old theater right by Boston commons.
Excellent Fiddler on the roof though the rows for the seats were tight
A great theatre right off the Common. I saw a Pink Floyd laser show!
Great theater. Not a bad seat in the house.
Beautiful theater with great views in most seats.
My legs are too long for the seats.
One the best venues in Boston
Gorgeously remodeled! Great staff. Moulin Rouge was fabulous.
It was so awesome and spontaneous
Beautiful venue. Will be awesome once its finished!
Redone.. It's beautiful. So happy we were able to see Moulin Rouge!
Beautiful theater! Easy parking nearby.
Sweet architecture. No phone service though - don't try to order a lyft.
Gorgeous theater!
First time there the show was nice easy access
Tight seating. But amazing show
The play was wonderful, Everyone was really kind, it was a wonderful visit.
Balcony seats have very limited legroom.
Excelent place for a play.
A gorgeous older theater with good drink selections
Beautiful theatre. Alcoholic drinks $10-18
We saw Moulin Rouge and had a great time!
Beautiful theater and Moulin Rouge was fantastic!

Gorgeous restoration of a cool 1920's theatre.
Wonderful play, very tight seating
Spectacular venue. Great production of Moulin Rouge

Performance great, seating cramped and I am only 5'8'"
If you have the opportunity to see a show here... Do It!
Older but nice
It is a beautiful place. I had a great time.
A historic spot that looks like it's been recently renovated.
Beautiful restoration. Still have a bit more to do.
