Reviews of Asheville Community Theatre
What a delight! I was in Asheville for a conference, staying at the hotel right behind the playhouse and literally stumbled upon the production while taking a walk. I remembered "Our Town" fondly from high school, 45 years ago, and decided to take in the play. One of my better choices. The cast and direction were splendid. The theater is so comfortable and perfect for watching a play. The front of house staff were very welcoming and happy to be there. I have to admit, I shed a few tears near the end--such a timeless theme. And I absolutely LOVE the inclusiveness of the company and the parallel overarching theme of this season. Do yourself a favor...check out Our Town and support Asheville Community Theatre. They have a story to tell...
We have enjoyed both shows we have seen at ACT!! My husband said, after watching Elf, that in the first half of the show he caught himself smiling while watching. He said Buddy’s joy was so contagious!! We will definitely continue to watch for what’s on the main stage each year and be back to see many more! Makes for a great date night too!
My family and I had such a wonderful time at the performance of Elf this weekend. The acting and singing pulled us into the story and really helped us get into the holiday spirit. And the sets were fantastic! The size of the theater is very comfortable and the kids loved the hot cocoa at concession - we will definitely be back for another performance.
I’m new to the area and was so pleased to see this season’s newest production of “Our Town”. The cast and crew are incredibly talented and the venue is wonderful. It really did feel like ‘our town’, so congratulations to ACT! And, I highly recommend attending the upcoming seasonal plays! Two thumbs up👍👍 …
We thoroughly enjoyed seeing Elf at Asheville Community Theater December 11! The 4 year old and 9 year old had fun and we weren’t sure if they would stay with it that long but they did! It was very festive.
Saw “Our Town” last Saturday night. I loved it. It was a great production and I’ve seen it a couple times before produced elsewhere, and this one was among the best.
I was really impressed by the quality of the acting and direction. Great little theater too.
Native Gardens was such a funny and enjoyable production. The set was lovely; the cast was very good also. Our only issue was that sometimes the cast members were difficult to understand; we feel they need to invest in wireless mics.
"Elf" was an early Christmas gift to all who attended. It was so well done and all (our group of 10) were laughing and enjoying the musical numbers. The characters were a perfect match for their parts. A small theatre - a HUGE success!
Native Gardens was an entertaining, humorous play and socially relevant. Would be good for teens as well as adults. Very well directed, with good acting! Definitely recommend!
Buddy the Elf had an amazing performance! He was so animated and energetic! ACT is a wonderful venue-every seat is great!
We recently saw the excellent play “ Native Gardens” . This is the 2nd play we ve seen at Asheville Community Theatre and we are quite impressed because both plays were first rate. The theatre itself is relatively small ( seating 100-150 I m guessing) so all the seats give good viewing and acoustics. Our local actors and actresses have so much talent ! Come see for yourself !
The parking garage on College St across from the county bldgs is probably the easiest place to park unless you luck out with the limited on street parking.
Fun times at a real nice community theater. We saw Native Garden and hope to attend more performances in the future. Great performers and staff throughout the whole venue.
Very nice theatre, although i wouldn't sit in the front row again. You have to look up. Parking in downtown is a challenge so allow time.
I've been coming to this theater for 22 years now and it is such a special place! If you are visiting or are a local and looking for a great evening, can't beat grabbing dinner downtown and then catching a show. The production level is always top notch and the performers are fantastic! The theater is on the smaller side so there are no bad seats! Definitely check out what ACT has to offer!
This year, I've seen two wonderful shows at Asheville Community Theatre (The Giver and Our Town). I highly recommend this gem of a place! Great talent, dedication, and a deep commitment to supporting the arts in Asheville!
A prefect way to spend an evening. Smart dialogue, engaging acting, current topic and nice resolution. And just the right length .
Go while you can
Elf The Musical at ACT was so wonderful, cast, staging, everything. Give yourself a holiday gift and go see this great show.
These guys are still great. Small town feel with great use of the stage. wiz even had kids in it. Love sitting front row. They walk right by you and sit on stage in front of you. Just makes me gigle and happy.well worth it. Stage dressing useful and look cool.
Great space, wonderful performance, and easy access for family members with mobility needs.
The theater had friendly staff and comfy seats. Their performance of "The Giver" was seamless, and I had a great time. Will definitely come again!
I was very fortunate to see Clue on opening night. It was the first show since the pandemic. I think a lot of people in the audience cried when she announced that. I know we did!
Anyway as always they did a fine fine performance! So glad to have theater back. So glad to have Asheville Community Theater back!!!
Just attended the Autumn Players performance if "On Golden Pond" in the main theater. Actors did a great job for this fundraiser. One more performance tomorrow at 2:30pm at the Reuters Center. (Disliked the movie but liked this performance of the actual play.)
wearing masks the whole time wasnt great but everything else was! exceptional production quality in an intimate setting. the Clue show was hilariously entertaining! highly recommend for your next date night or any kind of unique excursion on the town.
Family came with me to see Fight Girl Battle World. All had a blast. Cousin's comment was ,"we need to see more theatre"..Thanks for keeping theatre Alive!! Bravo & Huzzah
I saw an excellent play here, The Giver. The acting was really great. Easy parking nearby in parking garage. It's great when. You can support the arts.
We had the pleasure of going to see "The Wizard of Oz" at the Asheville Community Theatre. It was a delightfully surprising performance! The wonderfully talented cast and crew put on the most amazing performance that will not disappoint! I have been to many community theater performances over my years and have never been as impressed as I was with this one! Highly recommended for a very memorable afternoon or evening!!
Great show and great venue. Will definitely be back.
I don't go to theater very often, but really enjoyed it when I went. There most recent show I seen was the producers, the singing and dancing was amazing. The cast was very energetic and had it down to a science, as far as I know nobody made mistakes. Great show overall!
What I love about this theater is that it maintains the connected feeling of being a community theatre while presenting space and performance in an elevated and professional manner. It's always clean, friendly and welcoming. I did prefer when the snacks were from local artisans because it added a deeper sense of local community connectivity and still, to notch establishment all around.
My daughter and I went to Alice in Wonderland. It was a wonderful production, with a talented cast. We went during opening weekend and had the opportunity to participate in a cast and crew Q&A. It was a wonderful experience and our first time at Asheville Community Theatre. I would suggest parking next door at the Renaissance Hotel, for $5 a day. Easy access and affordable!
We saw Truth Be Told- what a wonderful production in a wonderful setting!
The theatre is intimate, the actors accessible, and the writer of the play sat right behind us.
I felt like a participant in the city's culture-- the locals who attend the theatre have such interesting backgrounds and stories to tell. This includes the production's entire cast.
Not a popular destination, but I would 100% recommend here to get an intimate and unique window into Asheville culture.
The seats were comfortable but I would skip the front row if I were to return, the sightline is that you will be looking up the whole show.
We visited for an afternoon performance of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, the cast did an excellent job.
I truly enjoyed The Wizard Of Oz! The entire cast was wonderful, however the gentleman, Javon Brown, that was The Roadie and the Jitterbug, was an absolute delight to watch. I just don't know how or where he got that energy! I've told my friends and family about the show!
Ive done theater here for a long time and its a very accepting and nice environment, the ACT staff were the first people to respect my name change which meant a lot!!
So friendly and welcoming. A great audition experience regardless of what the outcome may be.
We have driven 6 hours to see "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Wizard of Oz", and we loved both performances. This theatre is beautiful, the seats are comfotable, and the talent is unsurpassed. Keep doing what you're doing! Asheville has a gem!
I went with my 94 year old mother and we both loved this show! The actors are fabulous, Toto is amazing and the costumes are absolutely extraordinary. It truly is a tour de force! Congratulations all!
Just enjoyed 9 to 5 at Asheville Community Theatre! Great performance. We never go to the theatre but this was a great change of pace and inspiring! Hope to bring our kids back for one of the family friendly plays.
Excellent as always. We went to see the play Avenue Q. A fabulous show. Highly recommend
Asheville Community Theatre has Wonderful performances. Miracle on 34th Street certainly did not disappoint. We left the performance in a much better Christmas Spirit. All of the performers did an awesome job, but Kris Kringle was cast perfectly.
This is a lovely community theatre. The shows are great, fresh, and there is something for everyone. Our favorite was Young Frankenstein and Avenue Q. Our daughter was fortunate to attend Tangelwood Theatre Summer Camp and loved it! Truly amazing programs.
Great Theatre. Great Actors. Great Community. My father was the executive director at act in the 90s for around 10 years.
I was basically raised by the theater and the community of people in it as a child. I couldn't have fonder memories of it.
We've always had great experiences at Asheville Community Theater. The actors are so talented, and the staff have always been very courteous and welcoming. Highly recommended!
Remarkable performance! Wonderful, truly great show with magnificent performances. Too good to be community theater - but that it is makes seeing a show there all the more delightful. So highly recommend!
Asheville community theater is a long time staple of the local theater world. They have been doing a wide selection of shows for many years. To me the most remarkable thing they do is workshops and programs for children. I didn't fit into a number of groups growing up, and finding the theater community meant acceptance. An outreach program like this is a huge thing. Also they put on really well done plays.
Almost couldn't get in. Turns out you go in the back door even though the address is for the front door and i didn't see any signs directing you down there. There was humor about stuff I don't think is funny like dope but others enjoyed it alot.
Having worked for Macy's, not as an elf, I'm sure there were loads of other situations that could have been included. We had funny stuff happening all the time or at least stupid things coming down from corporate. So overall a bit disappointing.
What a fantastic show! So many talented performers! We came from Florida to see our 2 grandsons on stage together for the first time!
Spent an afternoon at the Asheville Community Theater enjoying the production of the Fantasticks! What a wonderful local theater with top notch entertainment and production! It was our first time here but definitely not our last. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon :)
This is one of my favorite places to go enjoy live theatre done really well with local actors and a great eclectic selection of plays. Definetely recommend this to anyone looking to have a low-key enjoyable evening in downtown asheville. You will not be disappointed!
Not a bad seat in the house, but that is best said when there is as rewarding a performance as "There Full Monty!" I actually wanted to jump up on the stage and join the fun! Look forward to our next trip.
Ladies day out on Sunday. Saw The Full Monty and it was a blast. Five of us had so much fun. Wonderful production, skilled performers, cute bums.
Just saw La Cage Aux Folles yesterday, it was fantastic!! Great little Theater and wonderful people working there. Come on North Carolina, follow Ashevilles lead in being more open minded! Who wants "cookie cutter" people, diversity is what makes our little town so wonderful!!
Just loved the Wizard of Oz production! Faith's singing was so amazing, as was the entire cast. What a lovely, faithful, and wonderful spectacle!
If you're a tourist, check ahead to see what shows are playing while you're in town. If you're a local, you have no excuses to not be familiar with ACT! The mainstage shows are ~$25-$30 and worth every penny, especially in the renovated theater. The "kids" (usually dubbed Jr) shows are $6 and, I'm not kidding, I would pay double because those kids are so stinkin' talented and work so hard that the shows would still be worth it. At one show several years ago, the audio went out midshow; we thought it was odd that two girls were doing a duet a capella, but then the main boy sang a capella, and then the rest of the show was a capella...! I'm sure that there are adult shows that would delay/cancel as a result of this audio glitch, but the kids made sure "the show must go on"! 35 below, their black box theatre behind the mainstage, also puts on some great shows. Really, you just CANNOT go wrong with anything here. Go check their website and find something you want to attend ASAP!
The cast and crew were amazing! Our granddaughters enjoyed being part of this wonderful experience! Keep up the great work ACT!
Great acting and a comfortable atmosphere made this a great night for my wife and I. We truly enjoyed the production of The Rabbit Hole and the tears it brought to our eyes from the comedy, the drama and most of all just how 'real' it was.
Newly remodeled gem in downtown Asheville. We recently watched the inaugural performance (dress rehearsal for The Producers) after the upgrades. The seats could use a little more leg room but that is small quibble.
My son did summer camp there. It been two months and his still talking about it. Now he want to audition for more plays. Also so a play with my kids. It's opened their little minds for so much more to see.
we've definitely seen some great shows here and we're sure to see many more. nice venue, intimate, great stage and nice selection of events. Looking forward to the next one!
Top Notch theater production. Staff was incredibly helpful, the theater was beautiful,. The production we saw was The Wizard of Oz, and it was very well done and very enjoyable.
Great play. Great actors. Staff friendly and helpful. Venue is much improved yet still a little long in the tooth.
A wonderful community asset.
Celtic Christmas was phenomenal. We travel all over the world and this was one of the best. Bravo! This show should not be missed.
My family loves going to Asheville Community Theatre. They always put on a good show and they help out the community so much! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out next!
Love this place, the shows and people.
We saw a Sunday matinee of Miracle on 34th Street. What a great performance! The gentleman playing Kris Kringle was wonderful!!
Incredible theatre!! Great talent, tech and space, especially for such a small town. Excellent summer theatre camp for kids, wonderful staff.
Always wonderful but The Full Monty was so funny and well done! Avl is lucky to have such local talent! Highly recommend!
What a nice venue. Comfortable seating. Excellent sound and lighting. Also, a super helpful and friendly staff. Free parking is impossible.
Saw Sweeney Todd. The staff was great and the cast was amazing. There wasn't a seat in the house that you didn't have a great view of the stage.
The play was wonderful and professional. The seating was fabulous, not a bad seat in the place. And the price was well worth it!
Absolutely spectacular performance by the entire cast!! Had a blast and would highly recommend seeing!
What an incredible performance of talent!!
The Wizard of Oz was one of the best plays I have ever seen. Great cast.
I saw Brothers Like These at the theatre. Amazing performance and wonderful little theater ❤️ Street parking can be hard to come by but a parking garage is close by.
I’ve seen The Fantasticks, Hands on a Hardbody, The Full Monty and others here and have always thoroughly enjoyed the productions.
Avenue Q is awesome!!! Fantastic singing, tons of humor. We laughed until our cheeks hurt!
Great play! Chairs are not comfortable and cup holders are in horrible place. But the play was awesome.
Very good local community theater. Many shows throughout the year. Variety of productions. Well worth attending.
Great theater! Saw an amazing play, the Iliad, tonight in the smaller studio 35 Below.
Every play we have gone to see here has been fantastic! Frendly staff and a newly renovated theatre.
This place is far more professional than many "professional" theatres I've been too. First class all the way!
