Reviews of 801 Chophouse

My husband and I went there for my birthday last night and it was incredible. The food was amazing and the staff was incredible. Our waiter made sure to educate us on the menu very clearly and the small touches of the birthday confetti and happy birthday on the menu made my whole day. We will Def be saving up for another trip hopefully sooner rather than later!

We had the pleasure of having Deb as our server and she was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the menu and had a very positive/fun/energetic attitude that completed our great time at the 801 chophouse! Food was spectacular from Appetizer, through main coarse, including the properly served Gran Marnier for dessert! Highly recommend anyone stopping in and enjoying great food, drinks, and atmosphere!

The food was amazing. The wine list was overwhelming with options. The server was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with delicious suggestions. The environment was perfect for a nice night out (ask for a both if you want intimate) or a small group of friends. Highly recommend.

Let's start with the giant seafood bowl, all of the seafood was amazing and on point. The lobster was incredible and the oysters were amazing and the crab 🦀 legs were delicious and the shrimp 🍤 was also incredible. The steaks were out of this world 🌎. I got the New York with bone marrow butter and the steak was so tender delicious. My wife got the filet mignon with bearnaise and she loved it. My son and his fiancé absolutely loved their steaks. The creamed spinach and the lobster mac and cheese with both to die for. The sourdough bread was also incredible. I wish I would of got the servers name cause he was amazing and explained the menu great and very thorough and was very friendly. If you are ever in Des Moines I highly recommend this place. Not cheap but well worth it. Sorry I forgot to take a picture of the creamed spinach. One last thing the peach 🍑 cobbler cheese cake was to die for.

I’ve Been to 801 right at about 10 times now. Couple times as a large group, but mostly just with my wife or another couple. Out of all of the times I’ve dined at 801 it’s been fantastic. It’s certainly a special place in Des Moines
Everytime time (with the exception of one that I can recall that was just a dull server) service was upon the best in the Metro. The servers are truly professional servers. Even just down to the coat check is just a nice added touch. They all really know the menu well and all have provided great recommendations.
Many will argue it’s overpriced but I would say it’s spot on for what you get. I’ve had everything from the bone marrow to prime rib on the menu so far.
The side dishes are all ordered as family style which is great for groups so you can get a taste of a little of everything along with your entrée
My suggestion on appetizer would be to try the bone marrow.
If they added a few more non alcoholic beverages would be nice, but overall it’s a nice treat yourself for a night out. The seasonal drinks are also typically great, but they really should also keep The Woodsman on the drink list all year 😄. If they have The Woodsman on the list give it a try!

High Quality, high end service, great wine selection and the Troon is a very tasty grapefruit martini. Steaks are amazing.
They’ve upgraded the parking meters so you’ll need the app and a smart phone - so much easier than looking for change.

Sat at the bar and Drew made me feel right at home! This is a classic steakhouse--wood panels, awesome bar, great beef offerings with shareable sides.
I had the escargot (might be the best I've had, actually) followed by a wedge (traditional style with thick pieces of smoked bacon!) and prime rib with scalloped potatoes for entree. I rounded out the evening with a fine port from their extensive collection!

Okay, I can honestly say that this is one of my very favorite restaurants in all my travels all across the United States. Keep in mind it's pricey. It's not a place to come for a cheap steak, but it is the place to come for an amazing steak that you will never forget. And of course they have so much more than the steak. They have amazing cocktails, whiskeys, wines. And as you'll notice in any review I write that gets a five-star rating, the people are amazing. They just make you feel like you're at home. This is the best place for a stake in the entire city though. Just need to say that again.

Our second visit and just as memorable as the first. This is a truly wonderful restaurant. Food, service, ambience: all great. Our server, Zach, was charming and attentive. You MUST have their steak, which is always perfectly cooked. We also had chocolate mousse cake, which was divine. This is a must-visit in DSM.

I can't even. It was amazing. Such good food. Rib eye was so delicious. It was like butter. I had the best hollandaise I' ve ever had. Are service was stellar, the fact he had that accent had nothing to do with if 😍 I will definitely hit this place again, next time I'm in town.

I was here last night for a business gathering and we had Erica as our server. From the second she greeted us we knew we were going to be well taken care of. She was friendly, knowledgeable, funny, and answered every question and requests we had. She gave personable suggestions and was nothing short of professional and courteous. On top of this the food was phenomenal and so were the drinks. From every stand point this is the best dinning experience I have had to date. I plan to come again and would recommend to anyone who wants quality food and service with a great ambience!

Made a reservation for our anniversary. We were seated in the bar, which was noisy and busy, as expected for a Saturday night, but disappointing as with a reservation I would have expected to be seated in the main restaurant (which seemed quieter and less energetic than the bar).
Drinks, appetizers, and sides were good, although the French onion soup seemed to be phoned in with about half the amount of cheese as normally provided. Dessert (a chocolate souffle, which was excellent) was free with 'Happy Anniversary ' written in chocolate, which was a welcome surprise.
The steak was...disappointing. I ordered a $130 porterhouse, cooked to medium. What I received was charred and crispy on the outside, and blue rare on the inside next to the bone (barely warm). The overall steak was still decent, as there was good meat in the middle (between the well done and rare sections) but not what I ordered, and definitely not what I expected given the cost of the steak and the quality of cooking we have experienced on prior visits.
Service was passable, given the fact we were in the bar area with only one server assigned to the entire section. We definitely felt rushed along, which was unfortunate.
Our total bill for 2 was right at $500. In my opinion this was no where close to hitting a good 'value for money' target, especially considering the issues described above.
In the past our meals here have been excellent, but we must have gotten lucky and gone on nights that were not as busy. Would not recommend, especially on a busy night - just not worth it, from neither a food nor an ambience perspective.

Delightful! Myself, my partner and my in laws came here on a Saturday evening to celebrate two birthdays. We had made a reservation easily on their website. Service was amazing - servers were exceptionally professional and polite. Food was amazing. ❤️ A free dessert was included for each of the birthday girls, a lovely touch. I would definitely return! It is $$$, worth it for the upscale experience and dishes.

This is almost as much the experience as the food, and the prime steaks are phenomenal. We had a reservation for 8pm and though they were busy we were seated right away. The lobster soup was phenomenal, as was the lobster mac; we split a 24 oz porterhouse and a delightful strawberry salad.
Nat Clark
The food was excellent and the customer service was amazing. Great place for a business dinner or to celebrate an event. We had a great time with business dinner and spouses everyone enjoyed the meal and discussion. Steaks were so good wonderful flavor and the dessert was delicious. Very good selection of drinks and wine. I had coffee and it was very good.

Loved this restaurant!! The wait staff was very attentive, very nice and answered all of our questions. We had a large party so we kept them busy. The food is perfectly delicious, with large portions and cooked just right. If you're looking to impress someone, then give this place a try. I highly recommend them.

If you're looking for a dining experience that will truly knock your socks off, look no further than 801 Chophouse. From the moment you step through the doors, you'll be transported to a world of culinary delight. The atmosphere is chic and sophisticated, and the service is top-notch. But the real star of the show is the food - it's absolutely incredible. I ordered the bone-in ribeye and it was cooked to perfection - tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. And the garlic mashed potatoes? Heaven on a plate. Don't miss out on this culinary gem - make a reservation at 801 Chophouse today!

Great atmosphere, good service. My best friend took me here when I visited for a work training. We ordered the crab cake to start, then a porterhouse steak, broccolini, and scalloped potatoes. Perfect amount for 2 ppl. I will say I found a hair in my potatoes and they took them off the tab... Pictures included :)

Lovely is the word that comes to mind. An almost throw back to a classic, romantic place to go for a true dinner date. Wait staff was very professional and friendly. Food was wonderful. Sides were enough to feed at least 2 people per selection. Great music and ambiance.
Expect to pay around $100 - $125 per person easily.
Jackie Holland
It was a wonderful first time experience and the service was amazing! Everything was delicious!

We went for our anniversary. It was the best! The staff were polite, kind, fun and very well informed. When we told them it was our anniversary they put beautiful confetti on our table. The room was a bit too close to other tables for me, but we did get a booth which made it feel more private.
I had a bit of a hard time with how close to the kitchen we were so next time I'll request a more private booth with our reservation.
The drinks were stunning and they knew how to accommodate my allergies! My husband had many compliments for the aged whisky.
The food was stunning. I started with a wedge salad with blue cheese and it was amazing. Our steak was marbled, aged and grilled to perfection. The mushrooms I have eaten left over and they're just as delicious as when they were served! We also had the broccoli and the sweet carrots which are also so good I've been saving them for dinner tonight.
We finished with really fresh raspberry sorbet and the best creme brulee I have ever had. It was so creamy and not over sugared. I talked with our server Laura about the awesome chef and really hope our compliments made it to her!
Cannot recommend the 801 enough! I'm counting down until we go back!

Delicious with great staff. We had a great evening!

What can you say fried lobster is off the wall good. Top to bottom best food and best service out of any restaurant in iowa. Also been to the Denver location and the same mark for them 5 stars across the board. Eat here it’s worth the play.
Shannon S
This was our first time here and it will definitely not be the last!! We came here for our anniversary and they made it so special! The table was decorated, a hand written card and free dessert! We got the tomahawk steak and OMG!! Well worth the money! The sides were delicious! The wait staff was kind, courteous and informative. Everything was amazing! Thank you for a wonderful experience!
NRG NRG30
Waiter was friendly , food came out timely.
But my ribeye taste was good, but had way to much fat.I left it on the plate for wait staff to see, but they didn't comment.
I've had better steaks for less than half of what we were charged.
This was is way over priced.
David Burks
Wow. Food, staff. All was phenomenal. Will definitely come again.
Beth Clark
We loved our experience at 801 chophouse! The service was great but the food was even better. Our favorites were the crab cake, ribeye steak and Brussels sprouts. It is on the pricier side but was the perfect place to celebrate.
Melvin Saiboe
Sunday night dinner is a great way to get their consistently amazing food on pre fix menu. Portions are large and it’s a great value. Excellent service, and atmosphere beautifully decorated for holidays. Recommend for very nice night. Tip: Skip lobster corn dog appetizer, just ok.
Devin K
The food was amazing as always and the drinks were mixed very well. We came for my birthday and the woman who seated us told me happy birthday immediately and the table had little decorations saying happy birthday sprinkled on it. Our server was knowledgeable about the gluten free options which was great and has proven true every time we have eaten at any 801 location. We ordered a wedge salad which was delicious but it was by far the smallest wedge we've ever had. Instead of even being a wedge it looked like they took the two outside layers of a wedge and laid them on the plate, then hit it with all the extras and called it good. The blue cheese potatoes were perfect and the dry aged porterhouse was the best steak I've had in my life. Definitely doing that again. Unfortunately though our server disappeared after dropping off our food and taking my wife's drink order. I said I'd wait a few minutes and she never came back the entire time we were eating. I had finished eating and was still waiting so I called up to the bar and ordered a drink. The bartender was great enough to bring it to the table and even box up our food for us. The waitress didn't come by again until at least five minutes after the fact just to verify that she needed to charge for my negroni. She didn't even apologize for not circling around to us for such a long time. To clarify, we were eating at the tail end of the night and the restaurant wasn't that busy. Later instead of coming to our table and asking if we wanted another drink she stayed behind the bar and asked us. Like I said, it wasn't crowded at that point but when you are paying well over $200 for a dinner you expect a certain amount of professionalism. She was a very nice server but you could tell she was focused more on her other table of four that was spending more money than we were even though she had more than enough time to handle both of us. Overall still a great place and we'll be back. I'm sure our experience was an exception and not the rule.
Martin Becker
A definite must have experience for travelers and locals alike. Go with someone that loves meat as much as you do and split one of the larger, aged, veff cuts. Try the Delmonico cut. You won't be disappointed

Best meal I’ve ever had in Iowa! Although pricey, the cost is justified by the quality of the food. The room is cozy with a vaulted ceiling and enough space between tables to be intimate. The beef is cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. Salads are available in two sizes. I heartily suggest the Wedge salad. A variety of things are available for enhancements: Bearnaise sauce was my favorite. And the crowning glory was a chocolate soufflé with a brace of toppings: chocolate, raspberry coulee, and crème anglaise. Service is attentive but not intrusive. Can’t wait to return
Aaron Rouse
Our gal who served us was nothing bit amazing. Think her name was Erica and with the deserts Emma had the most amazing sweets. Would definitely come here again soon
Garrett H
Had a really good experience, David was our server. He did a great job of explaining the menu and the specials. Ordered the veal chops which were cooked to perfection. Got the iceberg salad. Also got the scalloped potatoes and Expresso cheesecake. We brought some bottles of wine for a $25 cork fee per bottle. Decor in the restaurant was nice, they did have the cows and farm murals on the walls which I thought we cool but didn't really make sense in the setting.
Nolan McDonald
It was really good food. The Mac and cheese and for $1 more bacon. These were big chunks of bacon. My only complaint would be they are a little chalky from the flower but that's being but picky. The bone marrow appetizer was quite different and delicious. I liked it with the tomatoes as my wife liked it with the caper salad. The tomahawk steak was delicious. Cooked spot on. I would have preferred a little more salt and pepper seared on top. We were pretty shocked that the table next to us sent their steak back. The menu has what the temps mean. Underrated in all of this is the bread. The bread really was basically perfect. The service was amazing. The experience overall was a ton of fun. I wasn't a huge fan of the chocolate raspberry cake, but that's not the reason to go here. The cake itself was very good. I wasn't a fan of the raspberries (I love raspberries) and how the were in the middle.
Tyler Huff
Made reservations here to celebrate my grandpa's 80th birthday with a family dinner. We were given a beautiful, private room and greeted by Chris, our waiter for the evening. He was superb, and couldn't have been more gracious and accommodating. He was very knowledgeable of everything on the menu and explained all options and question in detail.
The tuna tar tar was impeccable. It was so sweet, it tasted more like a dessert than an appetizer/sea food.
They offer some options that are not on the menu, which Chris mention as well. One of which I opted to order was the ( I believe 42oz. w/bone) Tomahawk steak, cooked medium-rare. It was absolutely delicious. So tender, didn't even have to cut away at it with the knife, just hold down and pull with the fork. The truffle butter is the ultimate topper, my favorite.
For my side, I went with the Mac &Cheese w/ Lobster. This is by far some of the best you will ever have. Cooked to perfection, with hot, gooey cheese, and an awesome, baked crust on top. This is the only side dish I've ever ordered here, because it is so good, it is hard to pass up.
At the end, the general manager was gracious enough to give us a private viewing of the meat cooler and explain the aging process and where they acquire the meat they serve, all in great detail. It was all very informative, making it much more enjoyable knowing the history of what you're eating.
Overall, it is expensive. However, you are getting the best dinning experience possible: the best service and the best food. If you choose to dine here, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
Thank you Chris for the tremendous service and also to the general manager for taking the time to educate us, show us what the meat aging process looks like. That was definitely something I won't forget and greatly appreciated.
Heidi Lindhorst
Celebratory dinner in one of their private rooms. Everything was perfect. Great food and seevice.
Megan Ratliff-Rader
I’m super sad I didn’t take more pictures of this amazing place. We came for a birthday date and everything was perfect! Our sever Zack was absolutely awesome and very friendly. Until next time, I will be dreaming of that lobster Mac n cheese. Thank you guys for a a wonderful birthday dinner. Of
Peggy Huppert
Superb food, prepared perfectly. Attentive but not overly friendly service. It was our anniversary, which I told them when I made the reservation, and they had a little sign and confetti on the table and offered us a free dessert. We shared a Grand Marnier souffle, which was wonderful. The only downgrade I give them is that the dining room is crowded, hot and noisy. When you're paying this much to eat you shouldn't be sweating and shouting at your dining companions to be heard. The ambience would be vastly improved by removing a row of tables.
Madi DeLong, REALTOR
Tried 801 Chophouse for the first time with my boyfriends family for his birthday. The service and food were wonderful. I had the lamb and would highly recommend it. We also tried a number of side dishes but my favorite was the broccolini and the Lobster Mac. We will be back!
Garmai Rogers
Nice place for a classic dinner for a special occasion. It was my 9th anniversary and we had an amazing dinner with friends and family.
Jacqueline Ireland
Great food and nice atmosphere. We read the reviews and made a reservation when we got to our hotel. Our waiter, Chris, recommended the bone marrow sauce for our porterhouse steaks and it was delicious!!!
The restaurant is a la carte for everything so it’s a little pricey but the food is very good.
Mike Wright
What can I say about 801. This place is absolutely amazing. They allways treat everyone like the own the place. Everyone is so friendly Kinda pricey but it's money well spent. 801 has compleatly ruined every steak I liked at other restaurants. I will gladly spend 100 bucks on a steak at this place keep doing what u are doing
Katie Mooney
Amazing food &. customer service. Michael was our waiter, and we couldn't have asked for better service. Great place to celebrate a special occasion.
Brett
Had a very pleasant experience here tonight, the staff were nice to us and attentive as soon as we walked in. Our waiter Michael treated us nice and helped us with any questions we asked, I would definitely recommend him again. Our food and drinks were amazing. They had Wagyu and Tomahawk steaks in rotation for the weekend and I went with the Wagyu. Cooked perfectly as I requested. (801 has slightly different cooked temperatures than other places, so ask your waiter). We also got Calamari, Filet Mignon, Mac and Cheese, Coffee Smores, Creme Brulee, Strawberry Cheesecake, along with some Vietti Nebbiolo wine. Overall our meal was amazing and we will definitely be coming back again soon. Thanks 801.
Kelechi Oparaji
Great decor, great food, and excellent service. A little pricey but worth it

Our 26th anniversary could not have been nicer! From the glitter on the table, the menu, and the attention we received made it all special. Thanks to all.

Delicious starters (tried shrimps and calamari) and amazing steaks (try lobster potato with it - special!), so good, that must try it if you happen to be in Des Moines! Definetely will be back, if around!

Wow, just wow. The best food I've ever tasted, and the portions weren't bad either. Be prepared to spend some money though,

Live review... I walked in with no reservations and the hostess still seated me immediately, which was a pleasant surprise right at dinner time! She also didn't force me to sit at the bar as a lone diner. Big plus there....
The waiter has been fantastic thus far, keeping my glass full and my salad plate was removed immediately, keeping the table clean. The Caesar wasn't as good as it could have been, a dust of cracked pepper would have taken it to the next level for sure. The manager has stopped in already to see how things are going, a great sign of things to come!...
The ribeye with boursin mashed potatoes arrived hot on warm plates, not overly hot to burn the fingers but hot enough to keep the food warm, a nice touch. Initial impressions on the steak are highly favorable. Something I hold of high importance is the quality of the fat cap render and this was done magnificently. There was no sawing to get through, nor rubbery texture on the tongue. Consider me impressed. I have to knock a few points for the saltiness of the steak, the meat was of high enough quality that it was unnecessary. I ordered medium rare, and it was exactly that, as I prefer it.
The boursin potatoes were satisfactory, the texture was excellent. The flavor won't be for everyone, however. If you are a standard garlic mash type, stick with them. Feeling adventurous? I would recommend the boursin...
My water glass sat empty for no more than a few minutes as I hit the midpoint on my steak and drained it. So far I've had 3 wait staff offer assistance and it has yet to feel like too much. Very quality personnel thus far....
So, where do we sit? All said and done, for a restaurant of this caliber they sit right near the top of the rank. I would happily bring the family here for a nice evening out and not feel I was overpaying for my experience. Shout out to my waiter Paul for the quality service!
william paugh
Great food and ambiance. Helpful waiter. Perfect place for a night of fine wining and dining.
Layla Sollazzo
Could rave for days about my experience. Collin our server deserves more than whatever he's paid!! He was prompt, super helpful and very welcoming. First time here and will absolutely be back! Clean, relaxing atmosphere, high end with staff that provided such a good experience. steak cooked to perfection & I was THRILLED To find Maryland BLUE CRAB in Iowa!! Taste of "home!"
Gabrielle Smithman
We had our Valentine's meal here and before our main meals had even come out we were talking about how much we wanted to come back. The service was impeccable, everything was clean and it ran like a well-oiled machine.
Our server recommended a perfect fruit-forward red wine that I absolutely loved, and both of our ribeyes were cooked to perfection. Tender, flavorful, and crispy on the edges. We had the souffle and some sorbet for dessert, and I definitely recommend the former if you are a fan of things like bread pudding. The sorbet was creamy and a great way to end the meal.
It's a nice steakhouse, so expect to pay for the quality. We are so happy we went and can't WAIT to return!
Robert Hazen
801 Chophouse was a birthday surprise for my wife earlier this evening. The staff knew this ahead of time and decorated the table and her menu to celebrate the occasion. This little personal touch was nice and much appreciated.
The food at 801 is top notch. We both ordered steaks. Mine was their NY strip with crab with sauce and asparagus and she ordered a wagyu steak with lions mane mushrooms. We shared sides of broccolini and macaroni and cheese with lobster. The cook on each of the steaks was exact and the sides were superb.
A+, 5*, we will be back 😁
Marshina Gemmell
We had made reservations for our anniversary and it was our first time eating here and they went above and made us feel welcomed. The filet was the second best that I had ever had!
Guy Rimbey
The Japanese A5 Wagyu is the best bite of food I've ever had in my life. From the appetizers, sides, steaks, desserts, cocktails, and wait staff...they execute on the highest level for all of it
Brian Blodgett
If you have not been there ask for the meat presentation.
Strong wine list.
Matt Jacobson
The food and service are always top notch. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. Their Filets and Prime Rib are excellent and usually what we order. It is a little expensive at $60-70 per person plus any drinks and sides you want....certainly worth it in my opinion.
Micah Meyer
Best steak I’ve ever had, good cocktails, fried lobster bites were excellent too

This Was A Great Experience. The Staff Was Nice And Friendly. Our Waiter Michael, Was The Best Part Of The Experience. He Really Catered To Us. Feels Like He Never Left Our Side. The 5 Stars Are For Michael. The Food Was Okay. Nothing To Brag About. We Give The Food 🌟 🌟 🌟. …

This is a very classy steakhouse located in an iconic Des Moines building, 801 Grand. I’ve eaten here twice and had a great experience both times. I’m a porterhouse fan and theirs is top notch. I highly recommend the bone marrow butter bath for the steak. The Lobster MAC is a must.

801 Chophouse was an overall great experience. My girlfriend and I went here for our anniversary/her birthday and we were more than happy. While we did struggle to find it at first inside of the building, the staff and our server was very friendly. For an appetizer, we got the lobster corn dogs and it was amazing, and we really liked the sauce that came with it. For entrees, I got the NY strip and she got the ribeye. We loved it: it was cooked perfectly and came out quickly. On the side, we got lobster Mac and cheese and it was also delicious (our servers favorite). Definitely give 801 Chophouse a try.
Brydon Papenberg
Great food and top notch service. One of our favorite special occasion restaurants in Des Moines.
Josh Kassmeyer
Great atmosphere and service. Not too mention the food was too notch. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an up scale steakhouse experience. All of the staff were very friendly and courteous. Our server Chris was very helpful and knowledgeable. He had great recommendations and was very attentive to my wife and I. 10/10
Matthew Ross
We visited on a Groupon and had an amazing dinner. Without it would have been about $125 plus tip for two with soda to drink. Will be back again soon for our Anniversary! Amazing food and the creamed corn was to die for.
Chris O'Keefe
One of the best ribeyes I've ever had. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent.
leo ontiveros
Very good choices, definitely had a good souffle! A little pricey though
John Kraber
Probably one of the best restaurants in Central Iowa. The food is superb, the staff is exceptional, the drinks are on point, and the overall experience was phenomenal.

We are usually review readers but on a whim we made a reservation at 801 Chophouse because we wanted beef. And 801 delivered. The atmosphere is delectable as the mouthwatering menu. The aesthetic feels old Chicago steakhouse with a modern update. Pre-dinner cocktails at the bar to begin had a great selection. Our table fulfilled all the requests. The service from the front door to table side was delightful and patient with newbies.
When it came to the BEEF 801 Chophouse understood the assignment! Our specialty ribeye melted in our mouths with every bite.
Sides of course were good and served family style but really the meat was cooked to perfection and that was the focus. Dessert was sweet with the hand written message but Really go there for the meat. Yes, prices are high, yes to white tablecloths and napkins, yes it really has a grand vibe but yes, it was a wonderful experience.

The sea scallops were really good. The bread is great. Steak w bone marrow butter is good. I would recommend this place to all travelers passing through Iowa.
Morry Shaul
I have never had a bad meal at 801 Chophouse. Everything was fantastic as usual. Without doubt 801 is the best steakhouse in the Des Moines area. They are now offering both dry aged and wet aged steaks.
Miles Davidson
Excellent food and amazing service.
I will be back.
Hayse Jorgensen
The accommodation that me and my date received was excellent! Yes, you got her approval too. It's easily imaginable that any lad looking to take out his picky lassey will have a memorable time. The timing for every request was on point thanks to our server Zach. He was immediate and highly professional but knew when to be a solid dude. Remember smiles are not TIPS!
His recommendations did not steer us wrong. The oysters were a major highlight, it was like God was speaking to us through food. (The tiny fork is always a must must). My standard for a gin and tonic has been uplifted and can’t be easily beaten. I’m a bit biased when it comes to the portabella mushrooms but it will be the cherry top on any steak that strikes your taste buds.
I would and will recommend 801 Chophouse for anybody looking to have an enjoyable evening for any occasion. We are hangery for more!
P.S. I took more than one minty toothpick and hid them in the gals purse.

We had a wonderful experience last night at this restaurant! The food was excellent and our server, Michael, was perfect 🤝👏
Worth the cost! …

Disappointed. My filet was delicious but came medium tho i ordered med rare. Both men ordered prime rib and it was tough to cut and chew. Drinks Disappointing too as Manhattan made poorly and with marichino cherries...wow! Dessert amd sides wonderful. Waier fun. Sorry i cannot recommend this restaurant to friends. When u pay these prices (and we r used to this) we expect it to be top notch.

Look you are never going to go wrong here. This is basically as fine of dining as it gets in DSM. Food, services, and drinks were all good. Desert!... worth every bite, Pastry Chef Emma was spot on! She delivered a couple of decadent desserts to our table! Start with the dessert 🎂
Angela Rushing
We absolutely love going to 801 Chophouse. This is always such a special treat. We were celebrating our anniversary, so my husband called ahead for reservations. They had Happy Anniversary printed on our menus and a cute card on the table for us. The manager was great and our server Zach (ask for him!) was amazing! The food was delicious as always, steaks were seasoned and cooked to perfection!
Eric Goben
The prime rib is to die for. Bring your appetite if you order the 801 cut, and don't forget the garlic mashed potatoes. You really can't go wrong with anything they offer. Top notch food and service every time.
Jesse Sass
A great experience! My wife and I went for Valentine's Day a day early. Seating was well-spaced, and the food was amazing as billed. Steaks were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were to die for. We split a cheesecake for dessert, which was perfectly dense and cheesy without being overly so.
The highlight of our dinner was the service provided by Lou and the whole team. We never wanted for anything, never felt rushed, and had our menu questions answered thoroughly and accurately.
We will definitely be back for special occasions in the future.
Chase Gochnauer
As usual, a spectacular experience! I asked my 8 year old what he wanted for dinner for his birthday. Of course, he said steak. A reservation on OpenTable detailing his birthday made his night something to remember! A great server, great food, my only complaint is that I ate way too much because I couldn't stop!
Matthew Smith
This is one of the few places that I'll order a steak with confidence. The prime rib really was quite exceptional as well. The hostess and wait staff were all very pleasant, attentive, and professional. If you value good service as much as a quality meal, then you'd be hard pressed to find a better dining experience elsewhere in the area.
Cadrien Livingston
If you have money or a corporate card it's a good place to eat, but if you're not willing to spend $50+ on just a regular steak, it's not worth it. No sides with the steak either. You pay $13+ for large sides. Not a good place to eat alone. Excellent dessert though. Worth the experience one time, but definitely not my favorite steakhouse I've been too.
Francisco Ángeles
Good (but not great) food. The wine list is amazing. Desserts (and portos) are the best
Kaisa Peterson
Amazing!! We got the crab cakes, Caesar salad, ribeye with bone marrow butter, king crab, and lobster Mac and cheese. Would highly recommend everything but the bone marrow butter, the taste was too over powering. Other than that our waiter was great and the atmosphere was nice. Classy with delicious food.
Kathy McBob
Wonderful food, great service for our large group.
Amy Suedmeier
Delicious!! Great food- staff is amazing! Celebrated our anniversary!
Katie Eppers
We had an amazing experience here! They made our anniversary very special. It is pricey, but a phenomenal experience and kind, courteous and knowledgeable staff.
Dane Anderson
Of course, always great service and amazing food. They've kept it classic, same ol' 801 Chophouse that you remember. Has that Smith & Wollensky look and feel. Prices are up but that's the new normal everywhere. They removed some of the center booths at some point in the recent past and there is a big gold bull in the middle now haha.

Went there for my husband and my 5 year wedding anniversary. They decorated the table with heart shaped confetti and even gave us a card for our anniversary. Our waiter was amazing, very attentive and kind. To drink I ordered the summer champagne and it was delicious, very easy to drink and not too sweet. For food, I ordered the prime rib single cut with the cognac butter with mushrooms. The meat was very tender and the sauce was a very good pair with the meat. My husband ordered the porterhouse with the same sauce. He said that it was very good. We will definately be back!
Erin Campbell
Meh. Overhyped and overpriced for the food/experience you actually get. We spent almost $500 (drinks, entrees, desserts, tip) on an anniversary dinner for two, and I've had better meals for far FAR less in Des Moines. The porterhouse steak lacked seasoning, even though we paid more for seasoning to be added. The sides were ok, but nothing spectacular. Our server remarked that the soufflé was undercooked, but didn't replace it or even offer to. Flemings is a superior experience for less, in my opinion. I had high expectations and Chophouse didn't deliver. Our server was good, but not exceptional. The ambiance was ok, but not at all the best in the city. For the price, this should be a spectacular dining experience and it wasn't. Plenty of other great restaurants downtown that are worth the money.
Ryan Barr
Had a great dinner with my fiance here. Paul was an outstanding waiter who made our experience better. He knew the wines and the food well. He was also super friendly and always there when we needed him. Thank you Paul
Christian Connett
Excellent fare, drinks, and dessert. Staff are wonderful, and Chef Brian is second to none!
Christopher Boprie
Special thanks to waiter Zachary for extraordinary service in an exquisite place. This five star place has an empire state of mind. True too food. Thank you
Amanda Godfrey
The service was top notch. The food was surprisingly OK. The steak was absolutely delicious. The lobster corn chowder could use a little less corn, the escargot was a little flat with the bread crumbs, and the butter for the bread was very bland. Lobster Mac and Cheese had almost a sweet flavor, wasn't a fan. They have an amazing wine selection, the strawberry salad was refreshing. I would come back again and try the souffle but I was stuffed. (Still ate the above mentioned, just wasn't the level I expected from this establishment)
Dan Robinett
I wanted to take my girlfriend somewhere nice for our birthday and it was absolutely perfect. Our waiter, named Skip, was the most professional, prompt, and proficient, gentlemen I have ever experienced in my seven years working in the food industry. If your knowledgeable about the difference in meat cuts as well as internal temperatures then this absolutely is the right spot.
Vidinawesome
Absolutely amazing food, service, and atmosphere. Very pricey, however hands down some of the best food I've ever had. Will definitely eat here again and again if I can.
Michael Lesniewicz
Great place. But very pricey!!! Once in a life time treat for me and my family. Son Graduated from college. So that was our treat. Our meal was equivalent to a weeks worth of pay for me. Steaks were phenomenal!!!
Jeanette Stark
Great food! Great service, will definitely be back next year!
Lizzie Boyles
I had an almost tearful experience here IN A GOOD WAY! My boyfriend and I decided to drive 2 hours on a Tuesday for a semi-spontaneous trip to Des Moines to celebrate both of our birthdays. We had set our reservation the day before.
SERVICE: We were nervous because we knew this was a MUCH classier place than we are used to dining at. But our server, Skip, offered to explain the menu to us which helped me a lot. I typically don’t eat meat or seafood, but I knew I needed to expand my pallet at an establishment such as this, so it was worth it to have him take time to explain the menu. Skip was extremely knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and very attentive. We never felt rushed at all. He even brought a napkin to us before we even realized we had dropped one!
FOOD: Absolutely delicious. Our appetizer, carpaccio, was light and scrumptious. My seafood pasta dinner was phenomenal. My boyfriend’s porterhouse was perfect as well. We also got blue cheese potatoes (yep! Superb as well!). We also got a decadent slice of white chocolate raspberry cheesecake that we had to take home because we were stuffed!
Overall, it feels wrong to only give this place 5/5 stars. 801 chophouse has changed my scale of restaurant expectations forever. And we truly felt so special, I never thought a restaurant could do that.
David Tudor
Loved the sides and good cocktails. The creamed corn was very good. The service was on point. Great attention to detail. The waiter forgot my friend's glass of Malbec, owned the mistake, and brought us a dessert for the table.
Ultimately, I decided on 3 stars (probably 3.5) and not 5 because my steak was good but not great. At a $50 price point and being in the Midwest, I guess I expected more. Plus my steak was cooked medium rare and not rare.
Renie Osterlund
The atmosphere was nice, and intimate. The table linens were clean and the service was awesome. Those items deserve 5-stars. Our drinks were delicious and we never went without being refilled. However, the food was 2 star, maybe 3-star at best. For the price this place wasn't worth it. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things but with steaks being your feature I wouldn't assume you'd have a "wrong" menu item. The garlic mashed potatoes didn't have a ton of flavor to them and they were luke-warm. My husbands prime wasn't done enough and so we sent it back, it came out proper but still lacking flavor. My NY strip was cooked perfect, but it was just a steak. Nothing set it apart from a steak I've had anywhere else. I'm an Iowan- we have good beef. The bread was hard and flavorless, and there wasn't anything worth the $200 price tag of our meal. For the price, I expect mouthwatering and it was lacking.
Jane Shapiro
Wonderful place to celebrate our anniversary! British David was informative, helpful, and friendly! Our meals were the best!
Aaron mc dermott
Zach was a great server would go back for sure as this was only our 2nd time there in 4 years.
We had a great meal for starters, main meal and dessert to go the banana bream pie yummy. We walked in knowing what the overall bill would be and planned for it tipping Zach 20% of the bill like we thought we would. Our bill with tip $300.00. Will be back again for sure!!!!
Suzanna Frost
Ryan was one of the Best Bartenders I’ve ever met. His cocktails were sublime!
Aubrey Miller
My boyfriend and I ate here for our anniversary. My filet mignon was perfect, however, my boyfriend got the ribeye and it was very charred and burnt. His meat was dry and disappointing for the price it costed. We got the hash browns with aged cheddar and they were ok..the Mac and cheese was wonderful. Soufflé, amazing. Service, great. For as much as it costs to eat here, I would expect everything to taste amazing so that was disappointing.
Andrew Hughes
Highly recommend! The food was truly excellent, and the service impeccable. Very nice wine list. Our steaks were cooked perfectly with a nice char on the outside while tender on the inside. I would definitely love to return.

I was reading some other reviews while waiting at my table last night and after having the experience I did with our sever David, I can truthfully say that anyone who has complained about under or over cooked steaks and the steaks not being the best they’ve ever had are completely out of their minds. I’ve never paid so much for a steak in my life but I would happily do it again if I got to experience the great time I had last night. Between the fantastic food, the brilliant wait staff and the very potent and alcohol infused drinks, I wish I could give this place more stars. Everything was amazing and fantastic, my friend and I split the 40oz porterhouse and I was concerned that him wanting medium rare and me wanting medium would really mess with the steak but after having it cooked close to both we both found every single piece of steak we had just perfectly cooked. But again, David is the real MVP.
Gail G
Service was excellent from Shannon, our server. She was fantastic. Every dish ordered in our party of four was delicious. We were celebrating a birthday and the restaurant went out of their way to make it special. It was an awesome experience.
Deborah Peno
Awesome, very special occasion, place to eat! I eat my steaks medium well, which usually makes them a bit dry and tougher, but my Filet Mignon was absolutely delicious!!! The only negative I have is the fact that you pay a price for every item you get. You do not get the sides along with the price of your steak, but have to pay for salad and baked potato each separately. Makes the meal VERY pricey. Went there with my son and his girlfriend and their combined 5 boys and the meal came to over $500 combined!!! It totaled about$70 per person. Again, the best steak I ever ate and our sides were delicious as well but VERY, VERY pricey!!!! Staff were very efficient and professional, got awesome service!
Brad Bennett
This place is by far the best , and here's why when we entered the building we were greeted properly with respect and kindness. When we got to our table we looked over the menu and was like ahhh it's kinda pricy but herd it was totally worth it , our server Billy explained everything throughly about the menu and was rather impressed to remember everything about the menu and food aspect head to toe. I ended up getting the waygu newyork strip and my wife had the fielet mignon cooked to profection hands down!!!!!!!!
(( Nothing negative to say what so ever )). GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR SURE !!!!!!
Sarah York
Not impressed. The price was high for what you get. I had the filet.. It was fatty. Shrimp cocktail was good. Drinks were meh. Got creme brûlée to go. Also meh. Atmosphere was fun and the bartenders are good.
Harry Azhol
Top shelf steaks with excellent sides. service was great. Great selection at the bar.
Marie Jones
My husband and I went there for Valentine's Day and we absolutely loved it! The atmosphere is nice and relaxing. The bread was fantastic! We started with Oysters Rockefeller, then ordered the 801 cut Roast Prime Rib and the Compart Farms Duroc with sides of Lobster Mac and Cheese and the asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The oysters were out of this world! The prime rib is second to none and the pork chop was such an interesting mix of sweet and savory. The lobster mac was delicious but very rich and the asparagus was perfect! I had the Troon Martini and let me just say, I could blow an entire paycheck drinking these babies! Our server, Janie, was lovely and attentive and helped us create a beautiful Valentine's dinner we will always remember. Overall I give them 5 out of 5 stars!
Jordan
A blizzard caused us to make an unplanned stop in Des Moines and this chophouse was near our hotel. I’m so glad we stopped! This meal is one of the top 5 meals I’ve ever had. From the appetizers, to the steaks and scallops, to the dessert and even the cocktails, everything was a 10 out of 10. Our server, Zack, was absolutely awesome. He explained the menu thoroughly, made perfect suggestions, and was wonderful to talk with. We felt like his only table! We will make Des Moines a regular stop from now on just to eat at 801.
Michele Evink
The food was nice and hot. The lobster chowder was delicious! The steak was a little under done for me, but it was a very thick filet. I'd order one level of done more next time. The potatoes were bland tonight, not sure why. The beans were like they always are, a little too bacony for me. The service was tremendous and perfectly attentive. The dessert, divine, as always.
William Dent
We loved everything, until the end. The atmosphere was great. The service was impeccable., until the end. The steak was the best I've ever had. Have you ever seen two waiters crash into each other and spill their trays all over the guests? It is hilarious when it happens to someone else.
Samantha Hogan
We had an absolutely incredible time for our 10th anniversary at 801! they let us bring in a special bottle of wine to celebrate our anniversary and treated us like royalty! The food was absolutely incredible and so was the service! Hopefully this will be an anniversary tradition for years to come!
Bruce Vance
The atmosphere is upscale casual... Waiting staff very attentive and the food was perfectly cooked. The bone in ribeye is well worth the money, the prime rib was good but not exceptional. The side dishes are large enough to share between at least two people.
Tim Nass
This place by far has some of the most amazing steak I have ever tasted. I had the filet, medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection. I did the light chophouse seasoning top with the seasonal morels, and he flavor was great. The price is a little high, but you get what you pay for. They also have great appetizer and drinks on he happy hour menu so stop by!
Milinda Andrews
If you want the above normal steak and atmosphere this is the place. Great for special occasions. Good wine list but expensive. Everything is pricey. Servers are very pleasant and will help with questions. Sides are ok. You have to order separately. Steaks are large. I go once a year for my husband's birthday.
Byron Swalm
I really like this place but the prices are a bit insane. Recommend looking into the groupon for 801, it is usually up and effectively gives you $25 off every $100 (you are looking at $100 a person easy here if you get a drink or two). The service is always great. The steaks are very good, but you pay to get that. The hash browns with aged cheddar are great. The Caesar salad is solid. High end prices but if you have the money I recommend it.
chad hisler
Great service from LU. Awesome food. Bone in NY Strip Awesome
Ryan Larson
Please be aware of pricing here. My wife and I had dinner here about a month ago and she loved the look of a 16 oz NY Strip that was on the original menu, our server came over and told us about the specials that day and they had a 20 oz NY Strip (Bone In) that she actually ordered. It is partially our fault for not asking the price, but what could 4 oz of bone cost?
In this case, the 16oz was about $45 (if memory serves me correct) and the 20 oz came in at $92. This is astounding.
Her steak and mine weren't even that great. The sides were pretty good though.
George Koetters
Drinks and dinner with friends from out of town on Friday Oct. 23-15. I chose 801 because it was close to the Hotel where friends were staying and they would reserve a table in the bar area where we could have drinks and then order dinner. I have been to 801 several times and I always thought the bar was a convivial place to enjoy drinks and conversation with friends and I wasn't disappointed. Our friends and my wife and I like to pound the cocktails pretty good and our waiter was prompt, courteous, and professional. Thank You Bill. My problem began with the sliced onion and tomato salad which I had been looking forward to all day. I found it on the menu and just assumed it was the same as before ( I guess my fault) thick slices of tomato and thick slices of white onion and dressing but as the server said they had changed it up a bit to sliced cherry tomatoes and thin sliced red tomatoes. It was like somebody had licked all the red off my lollipop, the group shared a couple of shrimp cocktailsvery good and some escargotnot so good according to my wife the escargot expert. My wife and I both had the beef medallions and we agreed not so good chewy and overcooked, our friends seemed to like theirs 8oz. filet, sea bass, and medallions. The wine was good, but then what wine isn't? Dessert was outstanding the raspberry cheesecake for me. Still disappointed with the salad, one appetizer, and our entree. I'll be back but It'll be awhile.
Jennifer G
As always great food and great service! Cocktails are always on point and the filets are amazing. Always have a hard time deciding between the truffle butter topping or the bone marrow butter topping. They are both fantastic! The brocollini was charred perfectly and the melted butter accompaniment was a welcome addition.
Andrea Hiatt
First off, our server Paul was fantastic. Extremely attentive and just all around great at his job. We were there of our anniversary and the personal touches the staff added were amazing. Heart shaped confetti on the table, a hand written card from the staff and a free dessert with happy anniversary written on the plate. Even the menu had happy anniversary written in it. Now the real star: THE FOOD. My husband ordered the Delmonico with the Buffalo Trace preparation and I the filet medallions. Mine was cooked to perfection exactly how I asked, my husbands was slightly underdone but they were happy to throw it back on the girl to get it just right. We had broccolini and lobster Mac and cheese and both were awesome. The creme brûlée was to die for. Even the bread and butter was delicious. It was an all around amazing experience and we will definitely be back!
Rich Palmer
The 801 experience was absolutely amazing. The food is all looked to perfection, gorgeously presented, and excellently recommended. The staff is highly knowledgeable about EVERYTHING on the menu, and have expert suggestions on pairings and add-ons that make the experience that much better. Grant and his staff are second to none... It's no wonder he's going to run that amazing location one day. We will most DEFINITELY be back.
Veronica Daniel
It’s on the pricey side but worth every penny. My fiancé and I go here for a date night every one in a while. Definitely one of the nicest places around. Some places I feel like the quality isn’t worth the price but here I think it is. The steak is the best!! I love steak tartare here. Huge portions so don’t worry about not having enough. My fiancé got the prime rib and it was ginormous. We like our steak rare and some places don’t do a great job at having it actually rare but this was a rare steak!! Can’t wait to come back for more!
Linda Gustafson
Chef is the best in the region. Kitchen is the best in the region. Food is the best in the region. Managers and staff are the most friendly, efficient, professional, and experienced in the midwest. The bar professionals are as well... you want it, they can make it. The bar is full of the rare and best, as well as local favorites... big selection of everything. You are always treated well here... it's always so professional, but Iowa-friendly too. I could go on and on. I've been a customer since about 1995... eaten here, entertained others here, and enjoyed the best of times here hundreds of times. A true gem of Des Moines... thank you for staying the best of so many things. My favorites... crab cakes are better than I've had in Maryland or anywhere; steaks and meats in general are truly the best available in the world (no exaggeration); escargot is amazing; crab and lobster are best in town (don't waste time with others).
Bill Baldwin
The food was very good. Would have been 5 but we were sat back by party rooms and there was a party in one that was so loud and obnoxious. Seriously if we had not looked so forward to going there we would have walked out. One if the waiters even commented that next time the people should get a picnic shelter.
Derek Garrett
My Wife and I always come here for our special occasions. Service is always superb. Their drink and wine selections never disappoint. 801 is definitely one of the most expensive places in all of Des Moines but when you want a perfectly cooked premium steak while celebrating a special occasion, there isn't a better place to satisfy your indulgences.
Alex Egeland
We went here for our anniversary and the serving staff had personalized notes and decorations for us. We both ordered steaks that were delicious. The lobster mashed potatoes are worth the price.
Valerie Holman
Very good food and service. Good specials and a variety of choices. It's a must
Meghan Campbell
Excellent as always. Best fine dining experience in Des Moines.
Pamela Russell
The setting is rustic modern. The staff was attentive without hovering. The prix fixe menu varied and interesting. Each course was well executed and delicious. Salad, couscous, pasta and dessert were all enjoyed. But the star was the scallop presentation we both enjoyed for our entrée. A wonderful setting, great meal, and stellar service!
Casey Van Tilburg
Amazing place. Not a place I would take my child as it's quite fancy. The steak was perfectly cooked and amazing same with all the sides we tried their scalloped potatoes (not sure what they call them), asparagus, and something else i dont recall and a cold app that had lobster oysters and crab...SOOOO good! I got a drink off their cocktail menu and that was also fantastic. It is pricey though.
Chris Seymour
Fantastic restaurant. Not the most creative, but for quality of execution they are excellent. The cocktails are delicious. Bone-in tenderloin is buttery. Lobster mashed potatoes worth going to food church for.
Mahlon White
The steaks are amazing but the other food is just ok. Some sides are larger and worth the money while some of them are not. You really have to watch what you're getting versus what you're paying in order to see a real benefit. I think this is one of the restaurants that I will frequent sparingly.
Matt Edwards
Excellent service and meal,as always, for an early Valentine's dinner. Bone on ribeye, medium rare, well rested, is hard to beat. Lobster mac n cheese, green beans with pork is excellent. Caramel cheesecake is stupid good.
ben van syoc
Nice resturant with great food, but as always the servers are the ones who truly make the experience what it is. Jessica (server 1060 I think) really made our night fun. She was polite, prompt, and was willing to joke with us. Thank you for making our anniversary dinner a fun one.
Colleen Lees
An amazing place for a special night out. I made reservations for my husband's birthday. They decorated our table and even got him a birthday card. Everything was amazing. The service was excellent. I can't wait for my birthday!
Richard Klein
801 Chophouse is a typical high end steakhouse. My wife and I arrived early for our reservation and sat at the bar for a drink. I had an old fashion which was made perfectly. After drinks we went to our table for dinner. Our waitress was excellent letting us know what the specials were, which items were good to split, and general guidance. My wife ordered the Filet Mignon and I ordered the Prime Rib. I ordered the 801 cut of the prime rib which left plenty to take home. It was cooked well and seasoned lightly. My wife's filet was a little over cooked for her liking. We split sides of the Hash Browns and the Lobster Mac & Cheese. We should have only ordered one side as it was too much for us to eat. The Lobster Mac & Cheese had huge bits of lobster in it and was good to it. Price wise this was probably on the upper end for us. I think we could get a comparable meal at Fleming's or even Johnny's at a better price.
Bryan Herbold
I ordered one of the dinner "specials" which was a bone-in filet. I ordered the steak medium well per a recommendation from the waiter who advised that medium to them was more on the rare side. The steak was cooked very unevenly and got more red and "cold" as I got further into the center. I've had bone-in filets before at Flemings steakhouse and they were always cooked perfectly. What a disappointment for a $90 steak which by the way is ridiculous. They attempted to refire the steak but at that point the experience was ruined for me. The rest of my party had finished their meals by the time I had asked for just a regular filet and it was eventually brought to the table. Not an overly impressive first meal and therefore will likely not make this a routine stop. The lobster mashed potatoes were quite good and would recommend. The waiter also attempted to charge me for the $90 filet. He did take it off the bill when confronted...should not have had to even ask. This was also a birthday event and we were given a small private room in the back which was nice. The place was busy and was quite noisy so table talk was difficult. Not overly relaxing because of the background noise.
Lonnie Hudson
The 801 was recommended by a local as the best steak in town. While I cannot confirm that (I simply haven’t tried others), I can say that the steaks we had were great. We didn’t get us to see the various cuts before making the choice (we were told they used to do it), but the waiter was very helpful in making the choice. We opted for the Delmonico and a bone-in NY strip. The latter was the winner, but what the waiter didn’t mention was its price. At the already expensive place (the 24 oz bone-in Delmonico is 66$), it exceeded that, costing 90$! Yes, it was great, but not that much (plus the place itself is not so upscale that the setting alone would justify the price). The bone marrow butter was a nice add-on to the steaks and the fries were good. 801 has an excellent wine list and probably good desserts (I would go for the soufflé), but there was no space left for anything sweet. The bill with two glasses of wine came to 212$ pre-tip. The groupon with 40% discount eased the pain a bit...
Gustavo Luna
The food was PHENOMENAL! Shout out to the chefs in the back!
The reasoning for the three stars is due the service. I was basically treated like I was some kid who had no money. If I wanted that kinda treatment I would’ve gone to outback. Not the best first experience. My girlfriend also sent an email to the general manager last week, and she hasn’t even gotten a response.
In other words I probably won’t be back. If you guys want really good food check out Simon’s on Franklin AVE. (Did I mention their rating is 4.9 on google 🤷🏽♂️)
**my servers name was Michael and the GM’s name is Damon Murphy**

Delicious food and excellent service.
Was confusing to find initially. Enter the building from the southeast corner (across from the parking garage) and take the stairs/escalator to the second floor. Walk down the hall and you will see a door on your right before entering another lobby area.
Steak was perfectly cooked. Tuna appetizer was deliciously fresh. Asparagus and baked potato sides were cooked/grilled to perfection and also quite plentiful.
Todd “Toddtheplumber” Labus
This is the nicest place to eat in Des Moines. Very upscale and expensive. With that being said it is also the best I have ever had. Steaks are absolutely perfect along with everything else on menu. Top notch. Yes it’s pricey buy if you want to impress this is the place.
Samuel Watson
The restaurant is large and seats quite a few people. You walk up to the counter to order and then receive a number that you can place on your table. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food came out quickly and was delicious. (The burnt ends were my favorite.) Smoky D's isn't anything fancy, but they serve up a...
Sam Rasmussen
Amazing food. Amazing drinks. Really the only draw back for me which can be good for you, but they are very fancy. The waiters just do their job and the portions on some food is small but hey if you're into that have at it, it's amazing
Michael Wright
Amazing seafood. The grilled oysters were delicious and the sea bass was cooked to perfection. Chop salad was a delightful dish as well. An excellent dinner spot with many great choices for the most fickle palate.
Harry Slaymaker
We were in a group of about 12. Mike the server was absolutely awesome. Every cut of steak and pork were perfectly cooked and excellent. My seabass was excellent as well. The sides to pass were tasty and worked well for a group.

Came here for our anniversary from Florida and was disappointed. We spent over $200 for two small steak meals with seasonal morel mushrooms. Just didn’t meet our expectations, the food was just ok. Great service and nice atmosphere but I actually prefer Outback Steakhouse over this place.

Our little celebration dinner to celebrate us being close to ending our Summer road trip 😉
We were spending the night in Des Moines so we could visit the capitol the next morning prior to returning home to the Chicago area. I had snagged a Groupon prior to our trip. I called hoping to get in around 6:30PM but the earliest they could accommodate us was 8:30PM (two adults and two children). That actually worked out somewhat as street parking only needed to feed the meter until 9PM 👍
I thought initially we arrived at the wrong place as it is on the second floor of the 801 Building and we didn't see any indication there was a restaurant inside. The restaurant itself is a typical place and they have various wines as you enter. They have the live lobsters on display as well.
Bread and butter is served as you wait for your meal and drinks are brought out. My wife had a margarita ($17 I think) that wasn't too bad (jalepeno & pineapple) and since I was driving I had the non-alcoholic beer while we all had water as well.
For dinner, I had the NY strip with hash browns (pay separately for potatoes but larger serving that could be shared), wife had a seafood pasta special and my older son had the child's meal (he choose salad, chicken and ice cream- $12). All said and done the bill was just over $133. The Groupon was for $100 so left a balance of $33 and tip. I thought downtown Chicago was expensive! 😁
Food was good though and we did enjoy ourselves. Staff was pleasant and attentive and brought enough bread for our picky younger son (we shared food with him since we know spending $12 for his meal would just have ended up with food being tossed out). Most steaks here are just around the 50 dollar mark. (I believe mine was $47) and the side of potatoes was $12.
Frontier Enterprises
Top notch everything. Interesting cocktails, though on the "fizzy" side, but they can make anything. Huge porterhouse came out overcooked, they apologized and brought out a new one. Lobster mac delish.
tery russell
Great little restaurant downtown. The staff is involved and helpful. Not a huge selection on drinks but what they had paired well with the food. I enjoyed the miso salmon, It was perfect an couldn't have been any better.

Amazing dining experience. The food was top-notch and the service was spot-on. Expect to pay for what you get, but expect it to be worth it. This place has the best filet mignon I've had. Also, the mixed drinks are perfectly made and delicious. I recommend a martini before dinner.
Nicholas Ryan
Never fails! Always on point
Thomas Rodamer
801 Chop House is the best place to get a steak in Iowa. We love coming here for a wonderful fine dining experience and last night was no different. Our waiter was professional and great to work with and the Management team were a delight to talk to. Thank you guys for such a great experience!
Kevin Klemesrud
One of best places I have eaten. And great service.
Nellija Watertor
Great customer service! Delicious good! And we got a free soufflé
Steve Spangler
Our meal with 801 ChopHouse, Des Moines last nite was exquisite. Absolutely the best meal we have ever eaten. Our steaks were as described, the lobster potatoes were better than described and the appetizer of shrimp were to die for. I would be remiss if I didn't mention our great waiter, Skip. His knowledge of the menu along with his professionalism is to be commended. Thank you for a wonderful anniversary celebration for my wife and I.
Amy Wiess
Great place for an upscale meal. Our waiter Paul was great. He was very attentive and made excellent suggestions. We will definitely come back.
Greg Farwell
First time visiting, great experience. I can't recall having a better filet and I've been to several of the well known steak house's. Service and wine selection also excellent.
John Strawn
You need to know this is THE best steak house in Des Moines. Prices are not for the faint of heart. But well worth it if you're celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Life is too short to skip spending a little extra. Saw the Mayor of Des Moines here on a Friday evening. Be sure to have a reservation.
David Thongvanh
Very pricey but worth it for a special occasion.or when treating yourself. They offer large, wet-aged cuts of beef, with a rotating selection of off-menu cuts that have included items like American Wagyu, extra-aged steaks, and an enormous 40oz tomahawk steak. Also available are limited fresh fish options, lobster, escargot, and other high-end dining options. All sides are a la carte, entrees normally include a salad of your choice.
A full, well-stocked bar is present along with a huge selection of wine available by the bottle, half bottle, and the glass. Wait staff are able to recommend a drink based on your preference and meal.
I've been several times with people and by myself and had a great time every time.
David Benya
Hands down the best steak you will ever have. Every thing you will order is phenomenal, what an amazing resturant.
Heather Knar
Micro Wedding Ceremony and Dinner.
We rented the Wine Room, a private room for the ceremony which can hold 36 people. We had requested a 20 person long table which they decorated the table with adorable little pumpkins.
We got married on one side of it while everyone was on the other side seated. 801 Chophouse was extremely responsive to us, let us come in prior to the wedding to scope out the room and test our camera equipment, and let us set up early on the day of. The staff was so professional and I would highly recommend anyone in the Des Moines area who wants a small fancy wedding to have it there.
Randy Tallman
My son Benjamin took me there for my Birthday last week. It was great. Grilled oysters, great Steaks, outstanding service. Its an investment, but well worth it !
Bill G
Took my thirty year old son here for a birthday dinner. We started off with a couple of beers ($6 each), and skipped the appetizers. Mallory was our waitress, and she was awesome! Very explanatory with our food questions, and even told us about choices that were not on the menu. My son ordered the New York Strip ($46), and I ordered the Prime Rib ($46). Both were prepared exactly as we ordered them. Also, on Mallory's advice, we split an order of lobster mashed potatoes ($18). There was a mix-up with the Grand Marnier soufflé. The dessert chef made us a 'chocolate' soufflé in error, so Mallory "comped" us a couple of sorbets to make up for the faux pas. All of our food choices were absolutely delicious, and although quite expensive, we had a very enjoyable dinner. I would definitely recommend the 801 Chophouse for your special occasion! P.S. Ask for Mallory! 😊
J R
Had an anniversary meal here. The staff was excellent. The food was excellent. Similar to Ruth's Chris if you've been there in other cities. It's in the 1st floor of 801 Grand.
Haley Silhacek
This was the second time enjoying 801 chophouse and both experiences were exceptional. The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and delicious. Highly recommended.
Ed O'Brien
Excellent. Fabulous establishment. Great Staff.
Marit Ivory
Their service is excellent but beware they are always trying to up-sell you. Great selection of wines. Always great food. Most July’s there is a Groupon for a better deal.
Gabrielle Krieger
I love ribeyes. When our server said one of the specials was a wagu ribeye, I said why not? Listen. I died and went to heaven with every bite. That cow lived the best life and was loved. I don’t even have the words to describe the flavor. I want to go back in time and eat it again. In fact, I’m so zen about it I think we have become one. Don’t skimp here, highly recommend.
Jennifer Thorndike
Wine selection is awesome, service was great. Very beautiful restaurant. Carpaccio was delicious, also the soufflé was amazing. I like the lamb chops with pistachio, but I expected more.
Jeremy Shuey
Five years in a row we've frequented 801 chop. Each time a different experience; the first we had a waiter who didn't explain much of anything. The next four waiters/waitresses were so thoughtful and engaged. Everytime the food has been amazing. I always reccomend the ahi tuna for the starter! Order the souffle at the beginning. 25$ corking fee, do it!
Gus Koder
Can't go wrong with this place, I love it and will always be a customer, great wine , great food and a wonderful atmosphere...
Jenna Walton
Ambiance, food and wine. Top 10 service.
I definitely will be back. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Daniel Wray
I enjoyed some fine stesk in DesMoines tonight. Service was good, food was on point and the wine list was a good fit for entertaining our guests. All was good although not sure the audio poivre sauce was my jam. Will most it up next time...
Chris Haugen
Lived up to the hype. A massive, three story pork chop. Cooked and served with stewed apples. Cooked perfectly and muy bien flavor. Cool atmosphere and stellar service. Sat in the "political" room with framed cartoons from Duffy covering past presidential caucuses and elections. Get all dressed up. Be classy for a change.
Jim Waters
On a nice summer Sunday evening ( 8/26/12) my wife and I went to 801 Chop House. We were warmly greeted and offered a booth. Chris introduced herself to us and asked how she could serve us. She brought drinks and suggestions as to what we would like. I ordered the Encrusted Lamb chops and my wife had the Filet Migon.
Also, a salad ( very fresh and crisp ) and the sauteed Brussels sprouts w/carmelized onions. Everything was extremely good. Tasty and grilled to perfection ! kudos....
Yes, a bit pricey but, very, very good. I guess you get what you pay for.!!
This is a special restaurant, great Chef , great staff. Try it......
John Pacha
The food was out of this world. The waiter and staff was first rate. It made my daughter's birthday very special.
Austin
Just had the Prime Rib, 801 cut. It was quite delicious. I also happened to really like the Boursin Mashed Potatoes. The oysters on the half shell were pretty good as well but the Prime Rib was of course the standout.
Chanan X
I went to 801 ChopHouse for my bday this yr. The service and décor were excellent. The food however, was not. I was very disappointed with my steak (filet med-well) which required steak sauce since it was so dry and unseasoned. The sides I ordered were less than fabulous as well. Lobster mashed potatoes and a mushroom dish which were both very underwhelming. For the money that was spent that night I expected to take a photo of my food before I ate it. The plating didn't even include a pinch of parsley. I would have much rather eaten at a different steakhouse in Des Moines and will do so then next time I go out for a fancy diner.
James Marc
Oh boy, that was tasty! Great atmosphere, knowledgable staff. If you're a fan of surf and turf check out their steak and lobster. Never disappoints.
Max Soto
THE ORIGINAL GOAT 🔥 LOVE 801
Barry Rosman
The food was very good. They have a very good wine selection, but the mark-up is way too extreme. No way am I going to pay $300.00, for a $100.00, bottle of wine.
It's expensive, but a nice experience.
Valarie Langbehn
Gift from our sons for our Anniversary. It was very good food, excellent service and I would go back again! Prices are normal for an upscale restaurant.
Doug Wittkowski
I have been dining at 801 for years off and on. Frankly, it is too rich for my blood and I tend to try and seek out the less obvious great places to eat. However, all that said this is awesome. The best steaks I have ever eaten including some well known heavy hitters in Chicago, Kansas City, and around the country that shall remain nameless in this review. When I first moved to Iowa I was shocked there was no place to get a really nice prime cut of beefsteak. I mean think about that? Those days are over and it is great to see Jimmy Lynch finally have a huge hit on his hands.(now branching out to KC and Omaha too) I have loved all his previous places some of which are stil around (no longer owned by Jimmy) but shamefully bad, not this one. It is expensive but please, don't be talking or judging "the best steaks" anywhere until you have actually tried this 5 star establishment.
Grant Uhe
The food is second to none. Great atmosphere and first class service.
Tim Lippert
Wonderful place to take that special person in your life. Great place for any occasion. Service was nothing short of spectacular. The food was absolutely delicious. This place is Top Choice..
Chopper B
Very nice place, service is great, food was good but not quite matching the prices.
Elizabeth Conzo
Excellent & consistent service. Awesome happy hour before 6 and great fine dining. Waitstaff is seasoned and professional. Best wine list in the city.
Alton Jones
Wow, I never expected to find a place like this in Des Moines. I had the Ahi tuna and my wife had the fillet., both were fantastic! Try the has browns with your dinner, they’re amazing.
Durham Garbutt
Great service, amazing food. Yes it's very pricey, but once in a while you need a luxury meal. The filet mignon cuts like butter and is perfectly complimented by the bearnaise sauce.
Bradley Sink
My dining experience was decent. I have to say I have had a fairly amount of fine dining and for the prices they charge here at least for me was not worth it. The food was good, but it was not two hundred dollars good.
Eric Johnson
Hands down the best steak I've ever had. Great wait staff. Pricey, but it's definitely worth it. Highly recommended.
Ken Becker
Nice staff, great food. I had the smaller filet with the bourbon glaze. Very well prepared.
Sides are á la carte.
Joshua Nazareth

Joe McGaffey
Food was amazing, service was great and the best part this trip was meeting good people while celebrating my birthday.
Jeremy Phillips
Amazing steaks. Interesting appetizers. Excellent servers and staff.
Just know that this quality comes with a high cost. If you can afford it, it's fantastic.
17B Crew
The food was incredible. The service was incredible. What more could you ask for? This is a true 5-Star restaurant. Very expensive, but wonderful for a special occassion.

Adam C.
Excellent Food & Great Service
It's a little pricey, but worth it!!!
Have gone for several special occasions / celebrations.
Order anything on the menu, you can't go wrong.
Ted Phillips
This is at the top of 801 Grand for a reason. Great service. Great food selections. Great atmosphere. Quality in everything. Yes it is pricey but if your in the mood to celebrate or entertain to the max this is a great choice.
Jesse Crum
the BEST steakhouse in Des Moines. The Prime Rib is to die for and the Lobster mashed potatoes are out of this world. Don't get me started on the cocktails... but you probably should have a nice Absolut Martini with Bleau Cheese stuffed olives to start the meal off right!
Brad Johnson
Great meal and service. Fantastic date night on the upscale or casual side.
Hailey J
The lamb chops were really good, along with the lobster corndogs! Our server (Paul) was really nice and helpful too!
James Loffredo
Always an excellent experience! The best steakhouse in Des Moines!
Jack T
Great selections of steaks and chops. Great wine selection. A little pricey, if you want to spend some money. Great decor and excellent service.
Doxtor Bork
I went on a date here, it was my second time going to 801. The food was fantastic, and the waiter was super helpful at helping my uncultured butt figure out the menu. This place is pretty fancy, and the prices reflect that.
Dale Dean
Excellent steaks and service. Pricey, but one can save by splitting a meal. We split the steak, the salad and the vegetable dish. It was enough food for us.
J G
Always great food and good service though not sure the value is on point...pricing seems tad high in our opinion compared to similar dining in other major cities.
Shawn Holman
Great food. I hade the aged Delmonico
Josh E.
This restaurant lives up to its reputation. Pricey but if you've never been here before, check it out! A fun place to go with a large group of people.
James Kilmer
It's always a treat to dine at 801, and tonight was no exception. Always a warm friendly greeting, over the top service, out of the world quality, set in a gorgeous old world chop house motif.
Mark Willer
Thoroughly enjoyed the Willer Manhattan!
Cory Rankin
Great food with large portions, ambience was wonderful. Little pricey so not likely to frequent but would return to enjoy the experience again.
