Reviews of Roger Williams National Memorial
Judy McConnell
Nice park. It's a nice place to go to relax and read a book, maybe about Roger Williams. There are waysides around the park they tell about his life. He's story is interesting. Check out the National Park website about him for more information. I found him very interesting.
Jill Roaden
Nice informational park. Free parking on site is a plus. Be sure to also check out Prospect Park (called Prospect Terrace on Google) which is the final resting place of Roger Williams and contains a statute of him.
josue Antonio
super rad exhibit
quick walk around so definitely recommend coming with some food as it’s more of a spot rather than park
we did ask for a junior park ranger booklet so if you want to learn more about providence and the united states in general definitely ask for it at the info desk !
only downside is do not have very accessible hours.
Sharon Doyle
There is a nice visitors center that provides historical details about Providence and Roger Williams. There is a green space park right outside the visitors center with ample benches and picnin tables.
Ethan Lindstrom
The visitor center is small, but has some great information on Roger William's history and his 'lively experiment' in Rhode Island. He created a colony where people of all religions (or none) were accepted and set the foundation for a government that would not establish a state religion.
I found it interesting that many of the early settlers who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe would turn around and persecute fellow settlers from different religions or with different ideas (roger williams was banished from Massachusetts colony because he was viewed as a troublemaker because of his ideas).
Barry Chow
Wonderful 15 minute history lesson about the origin of separation of church and state, if you are in Providence, why not? Free parking onsite.
John Landymore
Very quiet place during the day. There are free standing information plaques throughout the park. They give a little story about Roger Williams and how him and his collection of friends started Providence as a settlement. They treated the native people with respect and traded with them. As I understand it they didn't "rob" the native people of their land. There are some people who walk through this place to walk their dog or get a moderate jog. I believe Monday to Friday that there are a couple of rangers who work there. They are doing an excellent job making sure this place looks neat and tidy for everyone to enjoy.
Morayo “Mo” Sayles
One of my favorite spots in Downtown Providence, the Roger Williams Memorial Park is a great location for engagement sessions. Great parking, easy highway access and a variety of fabulous eateries to patronize after your session
Ben Roth
The only national park in Rhode Island (and the smallest one in the country), this place doesn’t look like much upon first glance. It’s a nice park, well-maintained and picturesque, but it’s very small for a national park and for the most part looks like any other park in the city.
The cool part about this park is the history behind it. This is pretty much where Providence was founded, and Roger Williams lived very nearby. There’s a historic well, plenty of informational signs, and a wonderful visitor’s center.
If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air or a stroll through a park, this is an alright option with plenty of better alternatives. If you want to learn more about the history of Providence and Rhode Island, there’s a lot to discover here.

Fantastic place to go visit with your dogs or just human friends. The park is pretty peaceful and clean [part of it]. I have seen they are updating some things for better access. They also have a parking space which is great if you own a car. You can also arrive by bus, there's a bus route that goes along the whole street.

Very friendly staff in the visitor center!! Welcoming and excited to share their knowledge about the site, Rodger Williams, and the history of Providence. Also directed me toward other nearby historic sites of interest. Overall a great little stop in Providence for anyone interested in U.S. history!!
The Baby
Pretty little pocket park. To see there is the oldest house in Providence, and the site of the original spring for the town (it's now got concrete walls and has been capped. Also a lovely church across the street.
Diane Albanese
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. We talked for quite a bit about slavery and religious freedom. They have the stamp for the National Passport Book. The 5 minute movie really helped me to understand the issues of the day. Roger was kicked out of Massachusetts for proclaiming separation of church and state then 100 year later Thomas Jefferson wrote it into our constitution. Incredible stuff!
Mrs Harvey
Small park with great historical value. Providence's original well was located there and is marked with an information sign. It's a nice little spot to sit under the trees, walk your doggo, or lay in the grass
Jessica Brown
Beautiful park and informative visitor's Center. The quick film explaining the life and times of Roger Williams was fabulous as well as the park staff. I HIGHLY recommend a visit to this National Monument.
Ted Freeman
Wow! Had no idea this is where the 1st amendment was really conceived. These are the sites your history books in school dont provide the detail, importance or context. The Park Rangers are outstanding and very fluid with the history to help paint the picture for the significance of the independent thought and struggles through the 1600s. Do not miss this important point and its significance to form the 1st amendment in American History!!!
Erkemey Tadevonts
Providence - really nice place for vacation. Here you can see a lot of huge and gorgeous buildings, beautiful parks and other really good things.
Kevin Simas
I love history, especially RI history and this is the founding fathers starting place beautiful park tucked away in the heart of Providence, hope you enjoy it as much as I do
Patrick 11 Allen
Some bad smells from time to time but biggest thing that I didn't like no mirror's in the men's room. That really needs to change.
Katie Boudreau
Not the most exciting of National Historic Parks and sites, but we stopped by to get our National Parks Passport stamped.
The ranger at the desk was very welcoming and showed us there was a quick video we could watch to learn more about Roger Williams. I actually liked the video, found it informative and liked how it wasn't too long.
We were the only visitors at the time, which was confusing since the dedicated parking lot was full. It seems residents just park in the lot? We had to find street parking in order to stop by.
Katherine Westerman
Beautiful park and experience near the memorial. I love learning about our history
Rock Jocelyn
Nice smaller park. There was an open area and vendors at the Pow Wow we all went to Sept 19. Vendors with unique crafts, reasonably priced food, and genuie kindness.
We brought a small blanket and got a nice shaded seat.
There were interesting historic placards. The first 9 houses built, 2 were owned by women (Unheard of then)
The grass was soft and they had a poop bag station for dogs. There were 3 Porta Potties and I'm not sure if they are only there for this event.
I'll let you all know the next time we trek that way. They also have Waterfire tonight as well

Nice spot to unwind have a coffee. For the locals anyway. I'm sure great spot for the tourist. Family fun educational, and a part of history. There's so much more then think. You could spend the day going back in history. Please donate to our national parks. They need to stay here forever. Hope everyone enjoys there time in the great capital City of Rhode Island. Providence has a lot to offer. Enjoy
PayItForward
Beautiful park. You have to know the history though and what it looked like before todays version. There’s some depictions on historical face boards in the park but doing a fair bit of research gives you a much better idea online. We bring our dog here (on leash it is a city).
Stacy McMahon
Visitor center is small but informative. I may be biased as Roger Williams is my direct ancestor. The ranger on duty was very helpful and friendly. Park is quiet and pleasant, definitely worth stopping by!
Filip Galiza
This is a tiny museum but just enough to get a solid understand of the history of Rhode Island. The park ranger was super helpful and discussed Roger Williams history in much more detail. I’d love to know more about the buildings history as it’s a small old building. Besides that I highly recommend visiting this mini museum.
morty grayko
A little quiet space with grass and trees right downtown
Nate Mason
The park was clean and well kept. Visitor Center was nice, but a bit small. I wouldn't call myself a history buff, but I do like reading and learning about things when I see it and have the time. Roger Williams must be a very known figure on the east coast to people. But to me who's from the Midwest Williams is not. I have to say the info I found in the center spurred me to buy a book about the man because the revolutionary ideas this guy had at the time. So much appreciation given.
Chris V
A nice little urban park that I found quite peaceful even on a summer Tuesday afternoon. I needed a quick stroll after eating at Harry's Burger bar and this was perfect. Lots of shade for the paths also made it very nice.
Adam Ellis
Great place full of history! Got our stamp as well! 😊
John F Norton Jr
It's a great national park to go to have fun and enjoy eating lunch on a summer day..
Frank S
We saw Roger Williams in person! What a fun park!
Steven Nicolich
Park Ranger Andrew was incredible! I was casually strolling through Roger Williams Memorial Park & stopped by to talk with him. So happy I did. I learned so much! If you get the chance, please do so yourself & take advantage of his deep & insightful knowledge of the Park & Rhode Island history as well. Andrew is a super nice guy & amazing storyteller. I’m not a native Rhode Islander, but now “get” how historically pivotal & transformative it was within the context of our nation’s history.
Melanie Steelman
I love this park. Walk my dog here several times a week. As many do. It's always clean and when there's litter, I pick it up. The Rangers do a great job. It has very interesting markers that I still re-read. Always a great experience.
Rhonda Wigglesworth
Beautiful walk around the park. The visitors center was closed, only open Thursday through Sunday, but a parks person doing maintenance saw that we were from a distance and went out of his way to help us get our passport book stamped, a jr ranger booklet and badge and pamphlets on other parks in the area
Mel “Rising Dawn” Cordeiro
Friendly, knowledgable staff. Federally owned land. The land hosts a powwow there every year. Personally, it's a little small for a powwow but the land is great. Considering it is in the middle of the street (think median, only longer and a little wider) and parking is limited in their small lot, it is a nice piece of land. There are plenty of benches and informational signs all around the grounds. There are plenty of benches and places to sit, but the grass is better in my opinion because for just a moment, you don't feel like you are in the middle of the city. The memorial on site is amazing. Well worth the visit.
Meredith
Perfect little get away in downtown providence. Steps away from the State House and great food options just up the hill on the East Side. A great picnic spot and full of history. The welcome center has the national park stamp for collectors and a quick little video about rodger Williams, the founder of RI.
Ollie Montgomery
Pleasant, clean and a nice spot of quiet green-space in the busy city. Parking goes quicker than you expect but there are busses available and it's within walking/driving distance of various main thoroughfares. Good for a festival or a relaxing moment.
A. R.
Very nice place to go with the kids and learn some history.
D. DUKE
Altho we just sort of stumbled across this place on a stroll around downtown, it was a highlight of the trip. We knew nothing about Roger Williams before, but were lucky to get a quick education on him from Ranger Dave Lewis, who was so enthusiastic and knowledgable. At this time (7/5/20) the visitor center is closed, but staff has set up a exhibit area and small movie theater on the lawn area just to the south. If you have any interest in history, you wont be disappointed in stopping by to read the placards and chatting with the rangers
D/A/J/E/L W
Good quiet place, parking spots on site.
Esther Paris
Lovely national park, historic site, visitors' center. Beautiful place for some R&R, a picnic lunch (solo or with friends), and to learn some history about this lovely state, at your own pace and stress-free. (There's no quiz at the end. Laugh!) The ranger in the visitors' center is delightful. Despite the fact that this National Park is in the smallest state, at a whopping 4 acres it is NOT the smallest National Park. (There are more than 25 smaller national parks.) There are benches, picnic tables, parking spots (including HC). I am pretty sure I saw a bike rack. The park is well maintained; I noted no graffiti or other vandalism. It is easy to reach via RIPTA on the R-line and some other line/s. It is easy to reach by motor vehicle, and would be somewhat easy to reach by bicycle. (I cannot comment about the safety of bicycling in that area.) I truly enjoyed my visit and look forward to another.

Its a nice city park between 2 roadside, marking the Location of a Spring that...was the source of water of the Church lead by Roger Williams...a founder of Rhode Isand...building were closed on Monday.
Katherine Arnall
A fun and interesting place to visit in Providence. The site is small, but has a lot of good information and engaging displays. It is a good place for people of all ages, and the staff is delighted to be of any help. The park outside the building is a great place to enjoy the outdoors.
Brian Hoort
The park is very nice, walking the colonial houses across the street and up the hill was a treat. The building is a small, one room display with a video about the history behind Roger Williams. Its very nice, but quite small. I wouldn't make a big trip to it but if you are nearby do make the stop.
Darryl H
Lots of interesting history. There are many plaques with short explanations. Nicely kept. It's be lovely if there were an in depth experience. This is visible from the state house. The money goes there..... Lol
trisha roy
Thought there would be more to it. Just a short video and a small park
KEN FRANMIC
Words cannot describe the beauty of the park at sunset or sunrise.
Now I know why it's a real favorite of the joggers and dog walkers at these times.
A lot of Photographers visit the park to capture the Images & beauty of this Historical Landmark Park.
Definitely a must to visit & take pictures , have a picnic, a bike ride , canoeing or fishing.
Maybe seeing an image of Mr. Roger Williams himself strolling by around the park.
You won't believe or think your in Little ole Rhode Island
Have fun and come back again.
Claudia D.
Great space in the downtown area, close to various historical, train station & places to eat. The rangers available on weekends to give a history lesson. Tables to sit and eat. Clean. Handicap parking available.
Najat Kessler
Beautiful historical site in the heart of the city of Providence.
Nice place to enjoy your packed up lunch, ideal for short walks, or just for short break while enjoying the green trees and beautiful landscaping.
Raymond Ramos
While small in size this park is big in heart. Nice history display and great outdoor summer concerts. Staff here are really informative and helpful. They also run the junior ranger program, which gives you something to do with your littles. Very nice park, if small - but a nice little green walk in the middle of the city! I love this local park. great place to wallk dog and they sometimes have doggy bags. Well mantained. Occasioanlly homeless.
Randy Evans
This was a nice park with a nice message of respect for different beliefs. The park surrounding the visitor center was also nice and shady on a hot day. The staff were great and were able to teach me that although I am from Canada and can be forgiven, it is still not a great idea to wear my NY Yankee cap in Red Sox territory!!! LOVE this park!!! It's where Roger Williams founded RI! It's a good size park to bring kids to run around after touring the RISD Museum, and then have a picnic lunch! Plus.... there's free parking!
Purple Velociraptors
Cute little park near downtown Providence and a minute walk from the train station.
Has some historical connection to Roger Williams.
Catie Cowden
Check out the visitors center to collect cancellations for your National Park passport! It's a small park but well shaded and easily walkable. Sometimes they will host events like flower planting.
Ernest Grendell
One of the unsung heroes of the independence era, love the concept of Liberty of consciousness
Alycia Paolillo
Pretty little spot with lots of grass and places to sit for a while. The way its set up, however, reminds me of an island. Its small with busy streets on all 4 sides.
Traci Lawson
This is a small but interesting museum. The grandkids liked exploring the chest comparing Native American objects and their corresponding settlers equivalent. (wooden toy/toy of bones - money/wampum. A small garden plot demonstrated an early replica garden - corn planted with beans climbing up the stalk surrounded by a squash plant. Ranger was great with kids and even included "I promise to clean my room" in their Jr. Ranger oath.
Adventure Krewe
Crazy park in the middle of town. Stop in the visitor center to get a couple cool nps cancellation stamps for you national park passport. Rangers very friendly.
#adventurekrewe tip: you can park right in front of the visitor center on a Sunday afternoon to run in and get your stamps.
Brian Bigda
Friendly and helpful Park Rangers. Brief but informative education on Roger Williams ... We need more people thinking and behaving like him. Nice place to stop when visiting Providence. Park Service always does a great job.
Cali Hazard
Very quiet nice park to clear your mind
abaxter765
Beautiful and fun to visit for historical learning too. Not overwhelming.
Emilia D. Peña-Disla
A must see and learn from Providence. Here the staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. The staff was great with a big crowd of teenagers and kept them engaged and inquisitive about the first 100 years of the history of Providence, RI, and Roger William's impact in not only RI in the 1600s but how his vision and values are still an important part of the current society issues.
sophia bailey
This is a great little park honoring Roger Williams, his statue is actually in a different part of the city and also worth the visit (the view of the city is great!). And if you happen to find the park ranger you will be treated to a wealth of knowledge about the history of Rhode Island.
Steve Kilpatrick
A beautiful urban park. Small museum on-site with activities for families and kids. Very nice area for walking around, and the scene of frequent social events (pow-wow's, farmer's markets, etc.).
Michelle Giron

You can learn about the colonial days and the founding of Rhode Island, by Roger Williams. There's also the spring fountain that was used as the aqueduct for all of the colonial people.
Steve Turnbull
Nice, quiet park. Educational visitor center with good staff. A nice, quick historical visit with kids. Unfortunately not a lot to see, and nothing remains from the 17th C.

Because Roger Williams was a great man who fought for freedom from religion, separation of church and state. He and his counterparts don't get enough praise. There should be a holiday. I'm related to him also
