Reviews of The Old Church Concert Hall
Saw Jordan Rudess, a classically trained piano prodigy turned progressive metal icon, perform on piano and keyboards. Incredible!
This is a very intimate venue with great acoustics, and since it was originally a church (as the name implies), it has the original pews as seating which are covered with comfortable cushions.
The building has several stained glass windows, and a beautiful working pipe organ that Mr. Rudess surprised us by playing during his performance.
The view is unobstructed from just about any seat, and the sound was amazing.
This was one of the coolest venues I've been to! The acoustics were phenomenal and I loved what an intimate setting it provided for you to connect with the performers. Can't wait to go back!!!
Very nice concert venue. Small and intimate. Food sold before the concert. Pay parking was available right next door. Plenty of restaurants near by.
Absolutely amazing venue that feels like a personal space with whoever the artist may be at the time
Love this classic old architecture. Enjoyed the live retro radio show there. Has disabled access. Sloped floor for good views. I preferred sitting in back than on the side to see better. They moved chairs a bit to fit my wheelchair. Other seating is pews. Snack and beverage bar as well.
Beautiful venue, built in 1882! Just a nice little place to enjoy some chill music.
Such an amazing night with Eivor! Such an intimate and amazing venue! Everyone on staff was so helpful and nice!
We went to watch an amazing Christmas Concert there. Highly recommend as a venue
Incredible space, with great acoustics. It's really an old church, so be prepared to sit in a pew. Excellent venue for avant-guard and experimental along with more traditional instrumental music.
Love this venue for the concert we attended. It's so nice to have a small place. The sound was great. Church pew seating is a bit hard for a long sir.
This intimate venue has the best acoustics in town!
Michael Allen Harrisons Christmas Concert at the Old Church Amazing Venue for an Amazing Man with the most beautiful sounds. His Beautiful Family bringing cheer and love for over 3 decades Thanks MAH 😊 …
Love the Old Church Concert Hall for weddings. I have photographed a couple of weddings here already and it never fails to produce beautiful photos. One of the weddings was styled as a vintage style wedding and the other wedding was a Scottish wedding! Go check out my blog for sooo many pictures from these couples' weddings. stunningportraitphotography.com
The Old Church was an affordable option and a gorgeous setting. Perfect for those who want a "church" wedding, but are not of a church or mixed beliefs. The setting is beautiful and full of light for pictures. Working with the staff was seamless. We did not have any issues, and they worked with us when we had to change dates due to covid. Gina was quick to respond and address any questions we had. They even had free covid testing out front the day of our wedding.
Nice little venue! It goes without saying that churches have some of the best acoustics given their shape, but the renovations here were done exceptionally well for the audio.
What a special venue. The acoustics, as one can imagine, are simply fantastic. Such a beautiful atmosphere to listen to music in. Because the audience seating is the actual church pews centered around the dais, it lends intimacy and almost a sacral feeling to the performances.
Super cool venue! Plenty of room, great acoustics, and a classy vibe all around. If you're a band looking to take your gigs to the next level, this may be a perfect place to add prestige.
Very nice acoustics at The Old Church. Would love to see other venues here.
BEAUTIFUL venue. Really neat location. Super nice and courteous staff, too!
However, they seem staunchly opposed to air conditioning. Whooooooo it’s SWELTERING in here.
We thoroughly enjoyed going to see the Tesla Old time radio production at this venue. If you're older and have a bony butt, I advise bringing a pillow since the benches are hard.
An amazing, small, intimate venue!! The acoustics complemented the musician harmoniously. We sat just a couple of rows from the stage, but it really felt like we were right on stage. A historic site held relevant for generations to come. Thank you Van Hunt for bringing us to the Old Church Concert Hall!!
Beautiful acoustics. I love that they have left the full organ installed.
Portland's 1883 Old Church (please, my Norsk cousins, don't laugh at that year) is a "must-see" happening every holiday season. Loving his new "Winter" CD music. Bought his newest CD for our celebration this year. The space has beautiful interior (and exterior) architecture that really creates an atmosphere. This is the best place to worship are creator.
Great space for events. There is room for improvement as far as accessibility is concerned but otherwise good event space
Amazing venue with great variety of live music. Take the time to check out the decorated ceilings and antique light fixtures. There is a small bar where you can purchase wine, beer, seltzer, and small snacks. The bathrooms are down some old stairs so you'd need to check about bathroom accessibility if that's a concern of yours. Also, the seating is church pews, which I find uncomfortable for long periods of time. I highly suggest bringing a lumbar support of some kind if you have any kind of back issues.
Overall, they're a great supporter of local bands and I try to support them when I can.
Great concert venue, small enough for a more intimate concert, yet still holds a significant number of people! Availability of beer and wine a nice bonus.
Wonderful music from Michael Allen Harrison, Julian, the band and the solo singers and piano players.
Ive been alot of places Bad and good one thing i can say ive never been alone noone has ever been alone you just have gots to love that ... Amen
Great small venue. It's just hard to make a pew comfortable.
Wonderful venue, good acoustics and great performances.
We had a wonderful evening exerperiencing The Moth live for the first time. TOC is a great venue to The Moth. Covid-19 protections were excellent.
Beautiful place, and great sound. Such an excellent place for the #pdxbookfest, with beautiful touches all over.
Unique venue with amazing acoustics. Great location for acoustic or lower key music. Church pughs are still in place, which are actually comfortable but not so conducive to bands you'd want to stand for.
Beautiful old church that's now used for concerts, weddings and gatherings. Maybe not the best sound for the true audiophile but it looks amazing inside! Go check it out!
Amazing theatre experience in a beautiful old church rich with Portland history and an epic organ too!
Beautiful old church with nice acoustics. Has pew seating so bring a pillow if you need one. Perfect venue for catching Jean-Michel Blais on piano.
Beautiful church building! So excited to go to a concert here! Found parking easily.
Michael Allen Harrison Christmas concert was amazing. Covid restrictions in place yet comfortable venue with a fairly quick entry. The sound was awesome all afternoon. So glad to have seen the lovely inside of the Old Church.
Adorable theater space!! Tesla City Broadcasting show was absolutely a pleasure to see!! Top of the line entertainment, and perfectly stylized. I loved this venue.
So much fun. We absolutely adored Bells and Bows, what a delight!
Literally an Old Church, this could be my favorite new venue.
Small and intimate, with good acoustics, maybe a dozen pews, with padded seats. Bar next door, restrooms downstairs, it's got all you need.
Great venue for quieter music, not ideal for rock drums
This place is amazing inside & out! We watched a magic show there done by Mario the Maker Magician
A friend and I met up here for a one wo(man) show to see Miss Coco Peru. The venue was amazing and historic well-kept etc etc. It made me wonder why I never continued my architecture studies having loved that factor of the venue as well.
Beautifully restored and converted to an intimate music venue. Would happily come back.
This is a perfect place for an intimate concert. The acoustics are amazing and the ambiance is beautiful. Not a bad seat in the house and lots of paid parking nearby.
Awesome sound! Nice selection of beer and wine.
Beautiful concert venue with an intimate feel. Acoustics are very good. Center pews have great sight lines to the stage. Beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks served in entrance hall. Operated with heart and a sense of mission. Memorable!
This is a beautiful venue. Don't take my word for it - do a Google image search. I was searching for the next venues for Tuck & Patti - who will be there Feb 25. They are awesome - I just saw them in Santa Cruz on Valentine's Day and want to see them again soon. She has a beautiful voice and very cool phrasing and he is an excellent and imaginative guitar player. Meanwhile - next time in Portland I will for sure book a concert here on The Portland State concert hall.
Altogether beautiful. Paid parking is next door.
Lovely charming building with good acoustics. A great venue. Friendly staff. Vac and masks required. Not much room for social distancing.
Beautiful old church. Great acoustics.
For some holiday spirit there is no place better.
We had our wedding ceremony here at the end of July, and it was perfect! Gina was amazing to work with and went out of her way to let us stop by (multiple times) to check out the space. The ceremony itself went perfect, and our dog was allowed to participate. They even let us stay a little later to take some additional photos. They were all so pleasant to work with and I love the space!
The space has beautiful interior (and exterior) architecture that really creates an atmosphere. For it truly being a building designed to be a church, when I attend events here I don’t get an overwhelming sense of religion from the space. Which is good. It has a very welcoming atmosphere for everyone. The event I attended in particular had a ASL translator and I found that so incredibly thoughtful and helpful!
Closed when we went there.
Loved it. Great old venue.
Quite possibly one of the best concert venues I've ever attended. As the name suggests, this is, in fact, and old church. It is a very ornate, opulent church. There is a HUGE pipe organ from 1882, and at the concert we attended, there was a brilliantly talented organ player keeping us entertained before the show proper started. The acoustics are great, and the fact that there are plenty of pews in which to sit make for a comfortable evening. I'm looking forward to the next show!
Our second time attending a wedding here. It's nice for a ceremony. I like the stage. Its made for a smaller production which is fine but they absolutely need some way to amplify the voices of the people speaking. Both weddings I attended I had to make up words they might be saying. It is so difficult to hear anything.
a beautiful location for particularly salt of the earth, folksy music, the old church has stunning acoustics and a very intimate setting. seating just under 300 people, semi-popular acts coming through the old church sell out almost immediately, so it always feels rather special to acquire a ticket to an event there. i've had nothing but good experiences there. you can also purchase beer or cider there to supplement the live show experience, which is a nice bonus.
Great acoustics at this venue and space.
A great use for a former church. It would have gotten five stars but the seating is the original pews.
Fun venue. Great acoustics.
Saw the posies there and it's a really lovely space. If you're handicapped, there's an elevator, but it was locked and I decided I'd rather chance the stairs than miss more of the show. Sight lines are great and you can buy a drink. The steinway also was in tune and gorgeous.
Admittedly I am biased toward this venue as my grandmother was crucial to its restoration. That said, it's a lovely space to see a concert, and I'm sure the same can be said for a church service. Great acoustics and an intimate performance space.
Awesome concert venue. If the paint job (colors) were better (it is painted to look cheap), the visuals (architecture) would add even more.
Went to the Wendy Gledhill "Rabbithole" concert here. The atmosphere was perfect!
Michael Allen Harrison and friends in concert resonated throughout the Old Church!
Good concert venue. Very nice acoustics, a beautiful organ as a backdrop, pretty good sightlines from almost all seats, and they've finally put in small plaques giving seat numbers so assigned seating is now the norm (almost always used to be open seating).
This is a great room to see shows. I've been about 4-5 times now. Occasionally I've had challenges hearing lead vocals or jokes that performers are telling when they are talking, but I imagine that has more to do with the speaker array being so far from our faces - many churches have this kind of set up and it becomes a bit challenging if someone is mixing at a conservative volume. I know there are a lot of acoustic shows there. But on the flip side, acoustic music often relies on being able to hear the lyrics as they are sung. Just saw Julianne Johnson perform soul tunes there last weekend and had no trouble hearing her. The mix was stellar. So perhaps the other 3 shows I caught where I couldn't hear vocals was just unlucky.
Went to see and hear Tuvan throat singers in the Old Church Concert Hall tonight. Fabulous. Great acoustics. Lovely venue. You can purchase beer, wine, hard cider, herbal teas, & yummy cookies there.
I came here to see Colin Meloy perform. The acoustics were absolutely superb. The entire performance felt so intimate and surreal. The way the Church is laid out, it makes you feel like you and the artist are side-by-side and there's nothing else in the world. It was one of the best live musical experiences of my life and I've seen Colin perform with his full band, The Decemberists, a dozen other times at various sized venues.
Karla Bonoff was fantastic! Venue was intimate and acoustics good. Pews were not super comfortable, but were padded.
Absolutely amazing accoustics in this place. Cool space
What a COOL venue! So pretty, very unique. Super strict with COVID protocol. Drink option was WEAK. Drinks cut off early.
Show was wonderful, convenient parking! But mostly I have to complement the staff on there gracious handling me me in my scooter. Took me down to the handicapped bathroom in the little elevation. Could not have been kinder! Thank you so much!
Recently I was able to see one of my favorite artists at this venue.
Only a few people can say that they truly have natural talent. Liz longley is one of those people. Her talent is seen, felt, and heard.
A true musician, whose voice is accompanied by melodious tunes and expertly written lyrics. The music, like Liz, is down to earth, complete, and soulfully entertaining. The songs can pull you in emotionally and leave you feeling connected to something greater than yourself.
Seeing her perform in person at the old church concert hall was a priceless experience. The vocals and venue left everyone in the room in awe and amazement.
If there is ever an opportunity for you to see such an astounding artist, don't hesitate, just go. The atmosphere created at one of her shows is comparable to any of life's greatest moments. The birth of a child, or a proposal from the one you love.
Her ballads help each individual's imagination increase in vividness and life.
Liz truly has an angelic gift.
And I am truly glad to have spent the time to hear her in person at the old Church concert Hall in Portland, Oregon on October 16th.
I never knew that this church was not a functional church but instead a music venue. The sound guy did a great job with both groups we saw (Tomo Nakayama, and Lenore.). The pews all had cushions so it was still fairly comfortable, and the drink prices were all reasonable. The only downside is that street parking in the area is atrocious, but there is a pay lot catty-corner to the Old Church, so at least there's that.
Great venue. Had an amazing time at the single release show for lily wecks.
What a beautiful church!! We were lucky enough to take in the Christmas At the Old Church Concert with Michael Allen Harrison. Incredible music to a STO audience. A definite stop if you're here on the Christmas Holiday!
I find this a very pleasant venue to attend a concert or performance. It's small enough to feel intimate but not cramped. I've been to three different shows, sitting in different spots and enjoyed each one - it'd be hard to get a bad seat especially for a concert.
There are concessions and snacks in the adjacent room including beer, wine and cider. There is soda as well. The only thing we truly did not enjoy was the diet soda that my husband ordered. I've forgotten the brand name - a boutique brand cola sweetened with stevia. He hated it. I'm more used to that type of sweetener and thought he might have been overreacting. Then I tried it and was shocked at just how bad it tasted. Truly nasty stuff to be avoided at all costs!
Wow, just went here for the first time last night. What a cool venue! The older I get the more places like this are my speed. Calm, relaxed, lots of places to sit, and the acoustics are just fantastic.
Great venue. Went to see Tesla City Stories, and had a great time.
Probably the best sounding venue in Portland. Always showcasing fantastic acts from all over the world.
Whether you are listening to music having a drink or just walking around this is an amazing place to visit. Sometimes the best time to go is when there's nothing going on and just walking around. But it's the acoustics are amazing.
Beautiful small venue. Acoustics for voice performance are not good.
Great spot for a small crowd show.
This building is a jewel. The pipe organ is wonderful and the old building has history from early days of th city. I have been to weddings, concerts and heard speakers over the course of the last 50 years. I am so pleased that is has ben preserved and is still used.
Wonderful venue with an impressive organ and beautiful stained glass windows that hosts really cool music-especially great for folk/ world folk fans. Great acoustics to boot.
The Old Church Concert Hall is one of the more beautiful venues to see a show.
Attended the annual Michael Allen Harrison, Christmas at The Old Church music program, celebrating its 25th year. They had 25 performances this year. This will be a yearly event for my family. I highly recommend!!! The church is so beautiful, too!
A really pretty building. It can get a bit hot in the spring or summer since they don't have much when it comes to air conditioning. The bathrooms are a little out of the way also. Other than that, it's an amazing place!
Funny stuff and they have beer 🍻 …
A Michael Allen Harrison Christmas concert at Downtown Portland's 1883 Old Church (please, my Norsk cousins, don't laugh at that year) is a "must-see" happening every holiday season. Loving his new "Winter" CD music. Bought his newest CD for our celebration this year. Thank you, Dan.
I experienced the most memorable concert of my life in this building. The acoustics and intimacy of this venue made for a life changing experience. I can't wait to go back.
Recently rebranded to TOC, this classic venue is wonderful for anything that goes on there. From classical to jazz to indie music, TOC is the place to hear it. Weekly free Sack Lunch concerts every Wednesday are a great way to hear music (mainly classical) from local musicians. Get on their email list & join as a member to get regular updates on upcoming shows. The new seat cushions are comfortable & the building is beautiful, especially the restored stain glass window on the south side of the Church. One of Portland’s best places to see!
Excellent! The acoustics were terrific, and the older gothic arches, stained glass, and the non-chapel area rooms are so architecturally designed, it was awe inspiring.
If you didn't arrive in the Christmas spirit you will definitely leave in a special Christmas spirit awesome music terrific concert Merry Christmas 🎄 …
Intimate and amazing place to see a show
Beautiful venue, great acoustics. The padding on the pews is the only issue for some, so bring a seat cushion if you need it.
Beautiful architecture and great venue for shows. It was an all around great experience id enjoy repeating in the future. I attended a public event for ubderstanding lgbq and trans gender pronouns
Fantastic venue. great sound. nice to be able to sit at a general admission show in an intimate venue. beautiful space, too.
Great Christmas Concert with Michael Allen Harrison.
Great entertainment venue. Good view of the stage and good acoustics. Well managed people movement. Most enjoyable evening.
Beautiful church with an interesting history. The pianist & organist superb. What a wonderful noon program for so many people.
The Old Church Concert Hall is a saved historic church that is now a venue for music, shows, lectures and theater. Each Wednesday it provides a free noon time concert The Old Church Concert Hall is also a famous wedding venue in Portland Oregon
It's an old church! Great venue for intimate shows. I saw Doug Martsch solo here and, more recently, Mary Halvorson. Recommended for true music lovers.
Beautiful historic building repurposed as a performance venue. An awesome experience!
Stunning interior! Saw a very moving concert here - was it the musician, the gorgeous space, the community? That combination of ingredients made the event just magical.
Great small venue, nice little full-service bar inside a beautiful historic landmark. Live music sounds fantastic in this room.
Wonderful acoustics and a dependably awesome music lineup. One of my favorite venues for folk and world music.
It’s a really nice small venue. And they have a good lineup of shows... downside... people move a lot to get drinks over the shows.
Perfect stage for The Moth! Parking outside is clutch for downtown too.
Very cool venue, would come back to a show I was only mildly interested in because the layout and acoustics are phenomenal
Lovely venue. I see Tesla City Stories which is fantastic!
One of my favorite small concert venues. Good acoustics and most seats have good visibility
Beautiful old church that sounds amazing. Comfortable, intimate location. Will definitely be seeing other shows here.
I have been in Portland over 20 years and I missed this wonderful concert an excellent venue. I Now understand why people go back for the concert at Christmas every year. For the next 20 years I will probably be going to concerts
A great place for theater and music !
What an acoustically FANTASTIC venue!
One of my favorite spots to see local music, while supporting a non-profit to keep this magnificent building alive. Check out their schedule it's incredibly diverse!
This is a fantastic show, recomend to anyone who enjoys a show with very talented musicians who can change up a show at the blink of an eye. Very relaxing and feel good show.
Beautiful space, but finding a place to sit is difficult as it is "pew" seating. People spread out and aren't always willing to make room for those left standing. Come early.
This is a magical venue for a music performance. Have gone twice to see Michael Allen Harrison's Xmas Concert and we have never been disappointed.
The Old Church orginally known as The Calvary Presbyterian Church was built in 1882 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Deliciously moody place for live music. Not a bar and so concessions are essentially snacks from a box but who cares when you have a location like this for listening.
A great venue for small intimate concerts.
WA Governor Jay Inslee with a quick stop. Likely the most educated Presidential candidate regarding climate change, but preaching to the choir in the PNW. Question is how can he do garnering support in carbon generating Texas, the industrial midwest and the political boxing ring that is the northeast.
A beautiful venue. I'll happily return many times
Not so sure about the church but the parking lot next door is fantastic. Really firm ground for parking my car. Also a perk that Jesus protects your car from car jackers.
Amazing concert venue! Absolutely gorgeous and the acoustics were spectacular
Very beautiful church. A small church can survive in a big city. Makes me proud to see it still being used and maintained with pride.
One of the most intimate venues in Portland. If you're considering a show here, do it. The polar opposite of an arena show, in the very best way.
Wonderful concert venue ... great atmosphere, very good site lines and acoustics.
Super intimate setting for a concert very unique and memorable acoustics can't wait to come back!
Loved it plus great concert. A beautiful church, nice neighborhood, I felt very comfortable there.
Nice small venue. A bit slow getting in, but good sound and comfortable seats.
As usual, a wonderful Michael Allen Harrison concert. He keeps it interesting by varying his Christmas program every year.
TOC is a really good venue for performance, all kinds of acts are at TOC every day, with some noon concerts that are free. All shows are affordable.
Very nice and clean...good people and a very positive modeling show...the people who put together this show on done an excellent job.
Beautiful concert! Lovely and wonderful artists!
Awesome venue! Sounded great, very intimate. Reasonably priced beers, perfect!
It was an intimate space to gather with others to celebrate the upcoming holidays.
Great intimate venue. Awesome acoustics!
The staff was very kind and accommodating and the venue is beautiful.
Awesome...Michael Allen Harrison and crew did a great job.
Nice Concert and classical songs.
Beautiful historic venue for music and the arts
Beautiful little church, and the acoustics are great
Gorgeous space. I went here for a storytelling show called Russian Roulette that was a SUPER good time.
Small, intimate space with perfect acoustics.
because it's a better place of worship in Portland it is an old-style building comes in the end of the current modernistic period.
Truly enjoy the free concert at noon every Wednesday! Such a beautiful old church!
Beautiful concert hall.
Wednesday lunch concerts are a treasure. It was the perfect place to get married.
Historic, beautiful old church and a great place to hear a concert. Beautiful architecture.
If you're here for an acoustic or acapella show it's an absolute delight. The sound is simply devine.
Love this concert venue! Glad the old building has been saved.
Beautiful acoustics, ADA friendly, easy parking
Fantastic sounding venue. Perfect for jazz and more acoustic stuff.
Nice little church. I visited a Christmas choir. The seats were comfortable but it was a little chilly inside.
Very good concert place. Good sight lines , good acoustics .
Love this place, great acoustics. Not a bad seat in the house.
Great venue - needs to book more shows as I'd love to come back
The acoustics are amazing! See anything there. It will be fabulous.
Great architecture venue, good acoustics, church bench seats.
Unique performances. Beautiful facility.
Seats are uncomfortable and terrible lines of sight.
Really beautiful venue.
The best Holiday musical show we have been to. This was our first time.
Wonderful venue for chamber concerts. Long way to walk from the MAX, uphill.
Saw Joep Beving here and it was an intimate no frills venue with a nice lighting system.
Brilliant acoustics, pew seating, parking next door, and a McMenamins on the next block. Sold!
A beautiful place. The acoustics here are perfect for singing!
Beautiful church. We highly enjoyed a Michael Allen Harrison concert.
