Reviews of Portland Head Light
Rōbi Ventures (Rōbi Ventures)
Be prepared for absolutely stunning views of the ocean as far as your eyes can see, waves crashing against the jagged rocks of the cliffs and a beautifully restored historic lighthouse perched high above it all. This is definitely one that you want to see if in the area. It was quite busy on the weekend and we could hardly get any photos without a ton of people walking in them. If you really want some great views of this lighthouse, make sure to take the cliff side trail. It’s well worth the short time it takes and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views.

The surrounding view is breathtaking! Climbing around is fun. We wore hiking shoes and felt quite comfortable climbing the rocks. I saw some people managed with sandals and sneakers but I totally recommend wearing hiking boots. There is a small gift shop here and an ice cream truck nearby. We parked at the 1st lot we saw but there are more parking nearer to the light house. Self paid parking.

You must visit this exquisite place. You will pay for parking but it's nominal, I think we paid $4 for a couple hours. Get the Passport Parking app and you can pay right from there. You are able to explore the grounds and get right up to the Lighthouse. The views are unbelievable especially in the winter. Although the last time we saw it was in July from a boat so I could be wrong! I believe the actual Lighthouse was closed when we went so we just explored the trails around it. There is a Cliff Walk which runs along the cliff's edge that you can take. Be careful in the snow; it's very slippery! There is also a sledding hill with perfect unobstructed views of the ocean. Additionally there are many flat snowy areas to build snowmen or have a snowball fight. In the summer I can imagine picnics or just strolling around to enjoy the views. The neighborhood it's located in has beautiful homes if you're like me and enjoy looking at dream homes.

A very popular historic site during most seasons. Parking can be challenging during tourist season and it can be crowded at peak times. Despite that, it is well worth a visit. The grounds and the house are nice and the views all around are spectacular. The adjacent park has trails for walking and it's a great place to picnic as well. Plenty of vendors to grab a bite from nearby. A good one not to miss if possible.

Not much to see up close if you go when the lighthouse is closed, but it is beautiful to see from the rock beach nearby. The park itself is great. There’s a nice hiking trail, lots of wildlife, it’s clean, and the views are nice. There’s also an unnamed beach/picnic area a little ways down with super clean sand and water. We went on a beautiful Monday evening and there were barely any people, which is great, because we love a secluded beach.
Carmine Valentino
Amazing place to spend the day ,the grounds are well maintained , plenty of room to spread out, walk ,bike explore.
They offer picnic areas and food trucks.
The light house and views are beautiful.
We only spent a few hours here but definitely going back
To make a day of it,
Plenty of parking.
The only issue I would say is the Porto toilets for guys no big deal but if you are a lady it's gross.
We where there very early in the morning so I'm assuming they only clean them every few days for a place that has I'm assuming a lot of people vist they should definitely clean twice a day.
With that being said the location is stunning and should be on your list.
Danny Otero
Beautiful picturesque light house with cool looking rocks facing the ocean. Before the lighthouse there was a hilly area where people had sleighs and were having fun. There was plenty parking and since it was a holiday, no one was attending the parking lot. I loved the color of the lighthouse and it had a beautiful view. I highly recommend coming either in the winter for sledding or in the summer for BBQ.
Darryl Keeney (DWKeen)
This is a great place to visit. Plan on spending some time as it is in the Fort Williams State Park. Admission is free but you pay to park. $5 gets you 2 hours of parking and $7 gets you three hours.
There is some fascinating history here along with trails and easy ocean access. There is still plenty to see and do even if the museum and gift shop are closed. There is an Admission fee of $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 6-18.
If you're from out of town Google Maps will get you there nicely.

Every time I come to Portland I make the trip to this place. It is simply breathtaking. The panoramic views seem curated. I’ve seen people painting the views on multiple occasions. I completely understand why. I recommend coming just before lunch, experiencing the park, and the. Enjoy a lobster roll and a blueberry soda near the cliffs. The small beach is also worth taking a walk down to, enjoying the cool water.
Cory Stranzl
This is a beautiful area with alot of stuff to do. The 2 lighthouses are really cool to see. Have a pic of area. Some food and bathrooms. A huge grassy area. The rocks and ocean front are beautiful. Can get through some gates and climb down onto the rocks which I thought was awesome. Sometimes places like this are really strict on where you can go and that kills the fun of exploring. Here you can explore pretty much whatever you want to.
Miscellaneous Muzik
I didn't pay for the tour, I rented a car and I set out on my own adventure. Beautiful, stunning and extremely break taking! I spent $5 on parking and then it took me two hours to see everything. I enjoyed my conversation with Caroline, owner of Sweet Caroline, stationed right in the parking lot. If you're traveling with your family, this would be an awesome place to have a picnic. Before you call it a day, make sure to check out Goddard Mansion, it was acquired by the army in 1900. The mansion was used as NCO Quarters and later included an NCO Club.
Ady Bobs
Plenty of places to park and even a burger van nearby.
It is such a beautiful spot and there are a few trails leading off in either direction, a little beach and a few other buildings of historical interest so it isn't just a case of turning up to see the lighthouse (which is pretty impressive in itself) and then leaving, but you can spend quite a bit of time here exploring. It is really quite beautiful!
Shanelle S
Historic lighthouse located in a huge park with walking trails. There were three spots right by the lighthouse that were free parking, while the other lots were paid parking (via a parking app). Came here on a Wednesday and it was raining so there weren’t too many other people there. The museum wasn’t open when we went, but it was still cool to see the lighthouse from various angles. It’s a very picturesque spot.
If you walk along the trail (compact dirt track), you’ll come across a mansion as well as another area where you could picnic. There were also portapotties by the picnic area. The beach is rocky so wear comfy shoes if you’re planning on talking a stroll. There are benches along the trail if you want to sit and have a main character moment.
Overall, a great sight for first-timers and tourists.

Another beautiful light house on the east coast. We've tried to see alot of these and everything we are amazed at how beautiful they are. The park and grounds are well kept and everything is easy to access. They even have food trucks on site in case you get hungry. If your able to there's a small gate that leads to the rocky shore. You can climb down the rocks to the water and enjoy a different view of the light house. Next time I'll see if the food trucks have pizza or onion rings.
Raymond Gordon
Most photographed lighthouse in the world... and the reason is the views here are spectacular. If in Portland area you must visit this park and light house. So much history here!
I have been here many times. On one recent trip we loved watching the Coast Guard ship work on out in the water. It made for some great photos.
Joy Alvarez
Absolutely breathtaking lighthouse and grounds. This was one of the most memorable things from our trip to Portland Maine. We were dropped off by an Uber and it was free to go on the grounds. There is a cute gift shop at the bottom of the lighthouse selling souvenirs. I especially liked the jewelry. A lot of the items had acute nautical theme. The lighthouse and Fort Williams park area are truly stunning. There are a couple food vendors on site in food trucks and in little carts. We saw a lot of people out with their dogs so the grounds are pet friendly. While we were there we walked down to the beach and stuck our toes in. that water is really cold! This is a must-do if you're in the area.
Vanina V
Beautiful park, iconic light house. This is the perfect place to spend the afternoon walking around and breathing fresh air. A walk around this park will be better than walking on a treadmill for sure. Make sure to do the cliff walk as well. My only disappointment was in the bathrooms because there weren't any; only Porta potties.
Kids will also love this park and it's rocky beach and dogs on a leash are also welcome.
Nicholas Klein
This is easily in my top 3 lighthouses I have seen in Maine, stunning! Amazing getting right up to the lighthouse but even MORE amazing wandering around the rocky coast to the south and getting a perfect view of the rocks and the lighthouse. Love the food vendors right there as well, lobster rolls and ice cream - don't spoil me TOO much!
Puneet Mohan
One of the most beautiful lighthouse at a gorgeous location. The park opens from sunrise till sunset and if you can, get there before sunrise - it is a mesmerizing sight!
It can get very busy during the day and finding a parking spot can be a challenge during the busier weekends. Parking is paid - using meters or using the Parking App.
Hannah Graham
My first lighthouse!! It's so much bigger in person! Absolutely humbling. One thing I really loved was being able to walk around the area using footpaths carved close to the coast. There were lots of vantage points for great views. There were even options to walk on the rocky coastline! I wasn't brave enough to try it, but it was cool to see the people dotted along the horizon.
A D
This was a highlight of my recent road trip. Parking was $5 for two hours. No entry fee because I came in the off-season. The gift shop was only open on weekends in May, which was a small bummer. I thoroughly enjoyed my walk around and the views of the lighthouse and surrounding area.
Laarni V
We came after 7pm. Less people in the park. We paid $5 for parking.
The view of the lighthouse with the magnificent rocky cliffs and the ocean create very dramatic photos. It must look so much more beautiful during tempestuous storms.
Maria Fontan Emmith
It is no wonder that this is the most photographed lighthouse in America (and arguably the world). Beautiful scenic views on a lovely park setting. Strike a pose (or several poses) with a back drop like that you can’t fail. We didn’t go into the museum, there was no need with so many beautiful views.
Douglas Kelly
A beautiful rocky coastline added with a historical lighthouse and a wonderful park can only add up to 5 stars. There are places to explore the rocks and shoreline. You can walk the fitness route or just find a sunny spot to enjoy a perfect day. The lighthouse is amazing but the hours to see inside are very limited
Regardless, Portland lighthouse is definitely a stopping point on your trip through Portland.
S P
The highlight of my trip east. Gorgeous light house. The ocean and rocks. Well worth a trip to see.
We are here during the off season so did not get to tour. But enjoyed walking the grounds and cliff walk.
Young
This place is probably one of the better scenic spot i've been to. You can see those rocky shores with the light house, which is perfect for the photo. I haven't had a chance to try food carts in the area but I heard good things about them from the locals.
Michael Miller
One of the most picturesque lighthouses in Maine. I came with a tour group, so we had limited time, but the grounds are built to allow for multiple picture opportunities. It also helped that I had a gorgeous day. This is one of the best lighthouses to visit.
Audric strongestkarate
Lovely place to walk around and enjoy some breathtaking scenery in Portland area. The lobster roll from the food truck was good as well. Nice walk around the path and you can go down to the shore to get your feet soaked. There is also a small cove where one can swim. I guess this is one of the must see places in Portland area.
Matt Killingsworth
Cool to see, lots of parking nearby. Not much other than the lighthouse though there's a park surrounding it. Might be a good place to bring a picnic. We stopped by after going the Lobster Shack for lunch, definitely check that out.
Jamie Rea
Parking is the only thing you pay for and 2 hours is $5. Not expensive at all. But this was a fun adventure. So pretty and peaceful. Make sure to walk out on the rocks towards the shore.
Ron D
Great park for a walk, to learn about some history, to have a picnic, or just to sit and catch some fresh salty air. Beautifully kept clean grounds, although it is heavily visited. Would definitely suggest a stop if in the area.
Stephanie
It was a really nice shot to visit, IF you're looking for a super touristy place to visit. If you're like us and prefer less touristy locations, you have to visit the BugLight Lighthouse!!!
Beautiful overview of the costline with interesting historical information.
The real fun for my family was the shoreline when you first enter the grounds. Nice picnic area, dog friendly and clean.
Madina Pardaeva
Breathtaking views!
We drove from NYC and it was worth it. Best time to visit is definitely Sunrise. There were a few people jogging and that’s about it. The whole place is to yourself. Enjoy the view with a hot coffee or tea, your choice)
Dawn
Great views of the Ocean. Cool breeze even on a hot day
and the park was clean. Wish they had more shaded areas for people to sit and rest out of direct sunlight.
Cynthia De Sua
What a beautiful spot! Make sure to visit this light house if you are in the area. So picturesque! They even had some food on location if you go around lunch time. You need to pay for parking. We paid $5 and that entitled us to stay for 2 hours. I wish I had more time to explore the entire area.
Luis Diaz
This attraction is a breath of fresh air with picturesque views. Plenty of walking trails to move your legs as you enjoy the ocean view and smell. Choose the time you visit carefully as it can be very crowded.
Sim M
This is one of my favorite places in the US! So serene and picture-perfect at sunrise. I returned after 6 years to find this place as it was. I hope it doesn't become overrun by tourists. There is enough (self-paid) parking (a few places closer and more slightly up the hill). An access in the fence will take you to the rocks for a more intimate experience of the lighthouse. Solid shoes recommended if you're going onto the rocks.
Pam Skoff
Beautiful historic landmark. One of the few still functioning lighthouses. The museum Docent was very knowledgeable and gave detailed history of the lighthouse/s. It is the most photographed in the U.S. and you can see why by the postcard worthy pictures you are able to take.
R Davis
Meter parking available. Pay at the station or use the Passport app. Electric charging stations available.
Several food trucks were available on site (we were there on a Friday).
The park is so much larger than we realized. The fort, mansion, children's garden, etc... Make sure to make extra time for your trip here.
Anna S
Beautiful park and lighthouse. Views of the ocean are perfect. You do have to pay to park unless you park in the overflow lot which isn't a bad walk at all. Lots of walking but all easy and the staff take great care of everything.
Samantha Gorski
Absolutely stunning the day we went. The trails around the park were both a little bit of a challenge and we’ll worth the ups and downs (great warm up if you’re doing hiking later in the week!) we loved scrambling down to the shore below to take in more views and sit on the rocks to watch the waves.
Cost to park was a bit ridiculous but that seemed to be all of Portland…
Arman Shoraka
Of course a beautiful sight :) you can find a little gate entrance to get to the rocks, but please be careful. The rocks are jagged and no barrier from them and the water. However if you can get there, it will be some of the best views, breeze and pictures you’re ever going to get.
Minka Lane
Gorgeous views but unfortunately you can’t go up into the lighthouse. Tickets to the museum are fairly cheap but we opted out and just walked around. There is also a gift shop within the vicinity with lighthouse-themed items. There’s a couple of food trucks around if you’re hungry (for ice cream and seafood), the location is great if you want to walk around and enjoy the view and parks nearby.
L Mo
Talk about stunning, this place was so unreal. Breathtaking! Made me feel like I was in a different world. Photos do not do this place justice. Everyone needs to come here to see this view for themselves.
Jessica Cassel
Gorgeous lighthouse! The park was wonderful and we walked around taking in the breathtaking views. We enjoyed a lobster roll from the Cousins Lobster truck (very overpriced however) and a gelato from the neighboring food truck. Perfect way to cool off on a hot day. Must stop location when in Portland Maine!!!
J'aime Dahn
First time here and I couldn't have gone on a better day. Stormy days are the best to see the lighthouse, in my opinion. The waves were so active and the contrast of the white caps and the grey sky was beautiful! Awesome place!!!
Allison Miller
A MUST SEE! If you are looking for a picturesque lighthouse experience, look no further. This will check off every desire.
If you are anywhere near the Portland headlight, goooooooo. This was a quintessential Maine lighthouse. I dreamed of what a Maine lighthouse would be, and this met every expectation and dream.
The bluffs, the history, the height. This isn't a small lighthouse like many others. It is a true must see. I would happily come back here and even make a day out of a picnic, food truck lunch, or day at the adjacent park area.
It is easy to get a good picture to look at and so beautiful to stand, sit, or walk and look at the coastline. You truly have a "reached the end of the earth" moment.
We drove an extra 45 minutes one way for this, and do not regret a second.
One of my top life experiences. I'll be back one day. 💛
Liz Lee
This light house is so beautiful and you can walk up to it. There's several food trucks that serves lobster rolls , ice cream and coffes.. it's beautiful location from all view point
Ashlina Chin
Absolutely stunning views of the shoreline and lighthouse. I made the silly mistake of wearing a dress with a slit in it, which made it a little tricky in the windy weather, but it didn't take away from the awesome experience. We chose to Uber from downtown Portland and we had a little trouble finding someone to come pick us up so plan accordingly. The lighthouse is an absolute must-see if you visit!
Raymond T
Picture perfect spot and very nice place to just stay and enjoy in the moment. The cycling trail is nice but be prepared for plenty of slopes, for better or worse. There's also plenty of parking space. Would recommend to visit if in Portland
Sara Beth Wade
One of my favorite places, and so nice that the park is free to visit. There's a beach, several ruined buildings to explore, walking trails, ball fields and playgrounds, plus the lighthouse. You can pay $2 to go into a little museum about the lighthouse, but you can't go up in it. You do have to pay to park in most of the lots, and there are some food trucks for meals and snacks. The whole place is very busy on a Saturday. The biggest inconvenience is that there are no bathrooms except for portapotties.
Gil
Best of the bests in Portland in Maine. This is the perfect place to make tons of memorable moments with your families, friends, and special guests. Natural waves are fantastic and terrific!!! You never regret your time here! Get ready your best camera and tripods and selfie stick for your life shots!
Debbie Peters
Great place to visit. Recommend starting at the lighthouse and walking along the path to the Goddard mansion and abandoned military post. Obviously great for some nice photos too!
Sindu
This is the most photographed lighthouse in the United States and the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The lighthouse is situated along the shores of Fort Williams park.
I was visiting Portland in September for the first time and definitely this attraction was on my list. There is plenty of parking available. From April 1 - November 15 there is a fee for parking in premium spaces in the park. Free parking is available in the Overflow Lot.
When we walked to the lighthouse from parking, I was mesmerized by the view of the lighthouse and the waves crashing against the rocks of the cliff. It was picturesque.
There is also a museum and gift shop. There are some food vendors in the park, Gorgeous Gelato has great ice cream and do try the lobster roll at Bite into Maine
There is no admission fee for visiting the park.
I highly recommend visiting this park if you are in Portland.
Tracy Sung
100% recommend coming here for sunset! It's a beautiful area to watch the water and the cotton candy skies! There's lots of viewpoints for pictures and you're also able to climb out onto the rocks, if you want an unobstructed photo of you and lighthouse.
We came a little too late, so we only caught the last part of the sunset and the food trucks were also all closed at that time.
There's quite a lot of parking available, but it is metered, so if you're staying for awhile, make sure to top up on the digital meter of the app they have.
Really worth a visit!
Chris Clark
What a beautiful lighthouse! Must see if you are in Portland. Rent a bike in downtown Portland and ride over the bridge to South Portland, then on to the Light. The ride is about 5 miles one way, and fairly easy pedaling. There is a pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge across the bay.
Jenny McKee
One of the prettiest and most popular lighthouses in Maine! This lighthouse is easily accessible, with abundant parking in Fort Williams Park and flat, paved surfaces for walking. However, don't forget to pay for parking as they will ticket you--a $23 fine! You can enjoy the lighthouse by walking around the perimeter, or strolling along a gravel path to get better views of the lighthouse. On the annual Maine Lighthouse Day (usually in September), you can score a limited ticket to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Regardless of the weather, this gorgeous lighthouse is worth a visit!
Jennifer Adams
A must visit in Portland. Picturesque views of the lighthouse and great walking trails along the water and around the fort remains. Highly recommend stopping at the food truck right outside. Outstanding lobster grilled cheese and lobster tots.
Faiq Khan
This is one of oldest lighthouse on east coast! One of picturesque places in US, stunning views , plenty of space for family for day picnic areas, I really enjoyed the higher grounds looking out the sea watching the ferries entering and leaving the harbor!
James Skapars
Not alone in visiting this popular lighthouse but beautiful spot for creative picture taking. Highly recommend the food truck within 100 feet of the lighthouse if you want a terrific lobster roll, Connecticut style. Eery ghost fog started rolling in but pictures just don't do it justice. Great chance for a pic if a second lighthouse in the distance if the sea is clear. Worth the effort getting there and dealing with the maneuvering for parking. Parking felt like a Christmas mall experience in October. This the season though for fall foliage so it is part of the experience!
Liliana Ivanova
The Portland Head Light Museum is located in the former Keepers' Quarters. Located on the spectacular shores of Fort Williams Park. The museum contains lighthouse lenses and interpretive displays. There is a seasonal store with Maine-related gifts.
the adjacent ninety-acre Fort Williams Park offers picnic facilities, hiking opportunities, sports and recreation areas, historic structures, and unlimited ocean views.
Dana Hanna
This is one of the most scenic lighthouses I have ever seen. From almost any direction, the view provides an incredible scene. This is a must see even if it takes you out of your way coming up the East Coast.
Andrew Jeppesen
Wonderful experience. The Portland headlight screams of historicity, and the views of the Atlantic are amazing. I happen to visit on a very rainy day but it didn't dampen the ambiance. Nice little walkway in the area and benches for you to sit on. There's also a pleasant little gift shop with some nice trinkets inside.
Thaveesha C
Great place with amazing viewpoints. Better to visit on early mornings to catch the sunrise or in late evenings. There is a short trail as well where you can walk along with views of the coast.
Karan Hunjan
What a beautiful location had a wonderful time here. The lighthouse is easy to access. You can go down on some rocks and take nice pictures. There's a park around the place you can walk around enjoy. The perfect place to bring your family to have a picnic
martin ainger
Visited as part of a tour. Site of an old fort on very well kept gardens with large car parks. Lighthouse is apparently only open one day a year. Small gift shop. A nice place to visit, walk and clamber over the rocks.
Andrew Kassouf
We saw 6 lighthouses on our tour of Maine. Portland Head Light and Nubble Light were our favorites. Portland Head has trails and plenty of great views from multiple angles of this beautiful lighthouse. I highly recommend taking some time on your journey to stop and see this one which is the oldest in Maine!
मंदार हवालदार (Mandar Hawaldar)
Very Beautiful and Scenic. The museum and gift shop is open for limited hours. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. We reached at 7 pm on a Monday evening. The place was not crowded. And we could see it in the evening setting sun light. Very beautiful views all around.
A Grant Madden
Beautiful place to stop and visit. Lovely grounds, great photo ops, and such history!!
It only cost parking. We did not go in the museum, as we just went to see the grounds.
Susan Diffie
Beautiful lighthouse. Couldn't get there in time for the tour or gift shop but it's just wonderful to walk around.
Thank you to guide Tony (pictured) for good advise on photo ops. A "must see" place. This trip was in the summer. I've also been there in January, in snow, which is cold but incredibly gorgeous.
Lyudmila Kennedy
Loved it! So pretty there, i wish i had more time. Not sure if it's a regular set up but the park had several food trucks and bunch of porta potties set up. There's several trails along the coast, gift shop that was full to the gills of people, and a museum. It was Sunday so the park was very crowded. Still had a very good experience. Free entrance, but paid parking.
Kris Jarrett (Kris Jarrett Photo)
Beautiful park, great views of at least three lighthouses on a clear day, plenty of historic ruins to explore with decent interpretive signage.
I visited on an off-season day and saw only a handful of other people, but I get the feeling that it is a busy spot during the summer.
Janet Mustaccio
Beautiful views from well maintained walking trails. Interesting WWII defense ruins scattered throughout. Must pay to park. Porta-potty facilities. Nice gift shop.
Loriann X
Quintessential Maine lighthouse. There’s plenty to explore and take pictures of. Driving in there’s some ruins of structures and access to a beach. Drive further up to a parking area surrounded by park. There were a couple of food trucks with lobster rolls and fried foods. Lots of walkways and trails to various views of the lighthouse. Not opened to climb to the top. We spent a few hours walking around the different paths and down to the rocks. I recommend good shoes, since I wound up slipping in a hole that went up to my waist. Despite the wet socks and the smell of tide pool stuck to my leggings it was a really nice time. There was a fair amount of people there and it was a weekday in October.
Sabi SO
This place is so beautiful and peaceful I didn’t want to leave . I could spend a whole day here and feel like it was just a couple minutes . The way the landscape here has been shaped through time is just gorgeous .
Bring your camera and some sunscreen cause you won’t want to leave either
B B
Beautiful! The gift shop is only open 10-2 and we got there at 3, the light house museum was also closed due to lack of staff. This is still worth the trip, it's beautiful and you can learn and explore a lot of beautiful scenery!
Shell Belle
It's beautiful. If you're physically able, climb around the rocks below the light. Perfect place for a nice lighthouse picture with some great waves crashing into the rocks below.
Ray Dude
Simply the most beautiful light house on the entire coast. It was very crowded but surprisingly it didn't take away from the experience.
The museum was only $2 ?? Wow and I heard some people actually complain about that?
They had to be democraps! Ugh! I'm sure with Bidens inflation it will be $6 very soon.
Anyways, it's a definite destination! Must see.
Frank Marchan
The park in which the lighthouse is located has plenty of parking. I was able to park about 150 feet from the lighthouse since I went with my elderly mother and was carrying a parking permit for the handicapped. The walk to the lighthouse is on level ground, and you can get to the lighthouse in a couple of minutes walking at a slow pace. There is a small tourist shop just before the lighthouse. I liked the well maintained paths to the left side of the lighthouse, that allowed me to see the picturesque view of the lighthouse and of the bay, from different angles and elevations. I highly recommend this tourist attraction.
Becky Riggle
If you are in Portland, this lighthouse is definitely worth the stop. It's easy to get down on the rocks along the shore to capture the perfect photo. There is a large park nearby with convenient self pay parking. We saw a bunch of food trucks nearby as well if you need a lobster roll.
Nancy Bailey
I have been waiting to Portland Headlight for over 30 years and it did not disappoint! The view was amazing, the waves were crashing and only a slight breeze. It was perfect! When we got there it was foggy but the fog lifted while we were there to give us even more stunning views. It's a must for lighthouse and ocean lovers! Enjoy!
Michael Delamere
Ample parking on site. Little fact, if you use the overflow parking it is free of charge. Other spots are pay to park spots. They have e a few food trucks on property. I didn’t partake but a couple looked good. As expected views of the light house were fantastic during my visit.
Yalonda Maneval
What a lovely place to visit! The lighthouse is kept well restored, and is part of a larger historical park. The walk along the cliffs gives a beautiful view of the ocean and coastline, we also got to see a variety of coastal birds. And there is a fort on the premises that can be explored as well.
Jeremy
With being the off season the lighthouse wasn't open for visitors. But there wasn't a ton of people there. Got really nice photo opportunities. It was nice and relaxing walk around the park and pretty nice to be able to get to the water as well
Maribel Lara
This is a beautiful place! The views of the lighthouse and ocean are amazing, so relaxing! Nice walking trails.
Carla Gonzalez
Drove out early to see the sunrise. Park was well maintained and clean. Parking was accessible and the walk to various viewpoints was manageable. Beautiful sight to behold in the early morning hours. Truly an experience as close to holy as you can have.
lee eastling
Had a little time before our flight and the gentleman working at the Maine tourist center recommended that area as it was close to the airport. Lots to see and do, definitely worth the hour stop!
Mauricia Day
Portland Head Lighthouse is a phenomenal place to see. It was slightly busy a lot of people there to see the beautiful lighthouse it was wonderful. The gift shop was closed we were sorry that we didn't go in then.. I was able to get a Portland Head Lighthouse magnet for my sister & myself at another little store down the street. The View was wonderful it was a very clear day. The park is located at Fort Williams. I looked up a story online about the ship wreck that happened on Christmas Eve. Joshua Strout was the Lighthouse Keeper at this lighthouse when it happened & he was able to save everyone on the ship.
Kyle Nichols
Fun spot! Very busy when we went midday. But still easy to get parking. Didn’t feel crowded. Lots of areas to explore. Loved having local food vendors to pick from. Incredible views!
Archie Oman Egbert
It's a good place to visit. Lots of people and we were here in the off season. The park is clean and parking was plentiful. Gift shop volunteers were delightful. Trails are also clean. If I had to complain, I would mention that the vendors in the parking lot were annoying, but I'm not going to stop someone from earning a buck.
Tracy
This is a well kept up park. Clean. $5 to park. Saw multiple people skimp on paying. Come on people... it helps maintain these places of history.
Jared Gunn
Great place to walk around and see. Read the plagues, check out the old fortifications and read the posters that tell of the old WWII fort located here.
Easy to do if you’re visiting for a weekend.
Larry Shulman
Arrived on a tour bus to see the lighthouse. It was very foggy and during a heavy rain. I'm sure during a sunny day the lighthouse & grounds are beautiful. I took a few photos but they don't do the lighthouse justice. It was cold, wet & rainy but a day like this shows why there is a need for lighthouses. It deserves 5 stars even if mother nature tried to spoil the day!
Aubrey Phillibert
What a gorgeous and magical place. We went when it was closed, cold rainy, and windy. We still loved it! Watching the waves crash against the rock face is memorizing. The grounds are well manicured and maintained. It is a great place to bring a dog and take a stroll to loose yourself in your thoughts.
Alex Z
Simply beautiful. It was a clean, calm and beautiful park full of wonderful people and clean facilities. Parking is metered so you must pay to park-hourly with a max for the day-that’s the only downside. However, it is beautiful and very safe. Peace like no other.
Rebecca B
A great stop if you’re in Portland and looking for a beautiful sight! You can walk up to and all around the light house and we really enjoyed all the walking trails around the area where you can soak in picture perfect views of the water and the lighthouse. Definitely worth a stop by!
Adriel Orozco
So beautiful! Fort Williams is also great to walk around in. Also had the best lobster roll of entire trip to Maine from a food truck here!
Megan Crawford
If you are in the area, this is a MUST SEE spot. Beautiful beyond words - and since I don’t have any more words, just look how pretty the pictures are.
Was a little crowded when we went, but it didn’t stop out ability to take pretty pictures or enjoy the view in person.
Anthony McCloskey
The park is beautiful with incredible views. It’s really well maintained and very clean. Lots of fun, historical sites to see and explore. We were there on a weekend, and there were also a lot of really good food trucks present, so no need to pack a lunch! There is a lot more to see and do here than just the lighthouse, so be sure to set aside a few hours to explore!
Carla Smith-Moore
Very fun place. Kids had fun exploring the parts of the fort. Food trucks, and many picnic areas.
Joe Cunningham
Fun stop but honestly not much to do here other than view the lighthouse and walk around the surrounding area. Nice place to take a memorable photo/selfie. Do follow the signs to stay off the grass.
Some parts are wheelchair accessible, however most trails are rocky paths that might not be the best for thin tires and wheels.
Sharon Garner
Beautiful area and great views of the ocean. Small museum with a lot of history. Lots of places to walk around. Fort was neat to walk around
Leah Williams
A nice lighthouse located within a park & with lots of history! Enjoyed the views & the experience, though we were not able to enter any premises/museum/gift shop, I assume because it was off-season.
Kayla Bush
Paid parking, small entry fee for the museum. Absolutely stunning grounds. Food trucks on the grounds. Really beautiful.
Joyce
Not too crowded at sunrise on Sunday morning, although there were quite a few photographers. It was cloudy but still a nice view!
Brandon W
The view here is stunning! It's very hard to convey with words and pictures what the experience is like. Definitely go here if you are close.
Zeyu Hu
A beautiful lighthouse just a short 15 min drive away from Portland. It is located within a park and opens early and closes late. There’s also plenty of food options within the park so you can grab a bite to eat while enjoying the beautiful Maine coastline. Worth a visit for sure!
Neha Surendranath
Absolutely gorgeous! I had read a few of the reviews before heading here so I had got there pretty early (around 4:30 am ET; weekend) but the gates were still closed. Finally the gates opened around 5:30 am so I was still able to see the sunrise - it was definitely one of the best sunrises! Very beautiful!!
If you plan to go there in the morning, you may want to consider some of these tips:
1. Wear full sleeves shirt, track pants (the mosquitoes will bite you and you can’t enjoy while you’re there)
2. Bug spray or carry a mosquito repellent with you. Just apply the cream before you get off your car
3. A bottle of water
4. Wear good shoes cause there is a small gate and you can climb down if you wish to be adventurous and want to take some good photos
Darlene Dorin
Beautiful views ...worth seeing!
Check museum a d gift shop dates and times if interested. The gift shop closed at 2 pm and museum was not opened.
Fanuel Muindi
Awesome spot for reflection. Spend some time looking at the water splashing against the rocks. Rookies leave early. Pros, soak it in. Don’t rush it even if it’s cold.
Kelly Jean Raber
We only had an hour today plus can right at closing time for the shops and museum. We are already planning our next trip and going to make sure we have most of the day set aside! The light house is stunning with breathtaking views. The only place I have gotten 2 lighthouses in one photo. There are fog horns, bells, paths, a fort with tons of history sprinkled everywhere. Seriously this is a must stop, bring your walking shoes there had to 5 miles of walking paths.
Suzanne McBride
No access into lighthouse. Beautiful grounds and walking paths with amazing views. Parking was $5.
K C
Make sure you pay for parking. There is a really nice guy whose job is to check parking. Park is beautiful and allows dogs. Any view of the lighthouse is beautiful.
LJ Gillis
Portland Head light was built in 1790. It stands 72’ and is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine. Truly a beautiful setting. Enjoyed walking the grounds, watching the boats and listening to the sounds of the ocean. It was quiet since we went after hours. The property is well kept. Looking out in the distance you can see Ram Island and it’s lighthouse. It is privately owned. Built in 1905. It stands at 70’.
Janice Brill
This was such a beautiful lighthouse, and the cliff walk provided breathtaking views. Take your time to walk around the grounds of Fort Williams Park. The pond was beautiful and serene.
Bryan Wohlwend
Definitely a must-see if in the area. The scenery is breathtaking and the lighthouse itself is super cool. It is really one of those “picture perfect” places, and it is what most of us picture when we hear the word “lighthouse” The walking trails are super nice as well. Worth a visit for sure!
david stempler
Bueatiful park. We'll done with safe walkways, ample parking and rolling meadows. Views and vista's are amazing.
Hasnain Raza
Amazing serene place. The strong sea currents are so soothing that one just for hours and keep watching every wave. Spend a day or at least half a day to do justice with yourself and the lovely place. Give attention and time to this natural and man made beauty. Thanks.
Kiran Raj
Beautiful scenic place. They have a park also next to the beach shore.
Reema Srivastava
Spectacular views from Portland Head Light. Walking trails along the rocky shores offer gorgeous vistas of the ocean. Ample hourly paid parking spaces as you drive up from the entrance. Picnic tables and benches are spread all over. In addition the Fort Williams Park, adjacent to it offers excellent ocean views and trails.
Laura Stewart
A must see highlight of Portland Maine! Go at sunrise for spectacular, uninterrupted views. We didn’t go inside the house since we went so early but we spent some quiet time by the water early in the morning, soaking in the beauty of the coast.
Janice Marfiz
Went here when it wasn't the best weather but honestly it was still gorgeous. Such an amazing place to see the ocean and take amazing pictures of the lighthouse. Different scenic stops along the way.
Teresa Collis
Gorgeous views from every angle. Lots of parking but a very busy destination. Well worth the visit!
Ben Roth
An iconic lighthouse, perhaps the most recognizable in the world, nestled along the craggy coastline amongst the ruins of an old bunker. I came here with high expectations, and it definitely did not disappoint. While I’m sure we’ve all seen pictures, they really don’t do it justice. There’s just something about hearing the waves crashing against the rocks with the smell of the ocean in the air and looking up at the imposing Portland Head Light.
The lighthouse is located in a beautiful park, with tons of walking trails along the rocky coast, a few open fields, and a good selection of food trucks serving up lobster rolls. There is a museum at the base of the lighthouse, although I came after hours and couldn’t check it out. I was lucky enough to visit on a beautiful late summer evening, surrounded by beautiful flowers and buzzing bees, but any weather would provide excellent photos. It’s pretty hard to take a bad picture of this landmark. If there is a destination that’s quintessentially Maine, this is it.
Kimberly Dobbie
Such great history! Beautiful scenery. Lots of parking. Trails to walk or jog. Pets allowed
Rhea Tulio
When passing by Portland Maine this is a must visit. I personally have now started to have some fascination with Lighthouses ,will soon try to visit all possible light house I can passby. This has been my 3rd time visiting the light house on 3 different season😁 but still has something new to offer. The area is great for picnics and catching their local lobster roll food trucks.
The Park has a parking fee that can pe paid via an online app Parking Passport which for me is very convenient especially in ME,MA,CT states because you can extend your parking online. Parking fee can also be paid through a kiosk spread throughout the parking spaces.
The only downside visiting here is the public restrooms. They only use portable potties.
Steve Koenemann
Busy place! Lots of places to walk around on the very beautiful Portland harbor. Lighthouse museum and gift shop. Well worth a visit.
Bret Koesser
A "must see" on the lighthouse circuit. Next to a beautiful park and very scenic. Also you can see a couple more lighthouses on a clear day.
Subodh Nair
Historic lighthouse situated at such a picturesque location. There are small trails that take you through the cliff walk and a park for you to relax and enjoy some food, coffee or icecream that you can get from the few food trucks around. There is plenty of parking around if you don’t mind walking a bit.
gunjita joshi
This light house is amazing. One thing that I did not read anywhere but I found while going there, that you can see 3 lighthouses from one point from this location. That's really amazing.
I have seen many lighthouse but not 3 at a time from one location... that was my highlight of this light house visit..
Sammy K
It's a beautiful state park offering ample parking space and awesome views of the head light. U can walk down till the headlight , there is gift shop adjacent to the monument.
This state park also has a kids play and picnic area alongside a small beach. U can also find stacking rocks near ships cove.
There is Goddard mansion just 2 mins drive from the Headlight. The view behind the mansion is worth visiting.
Can spend around 2 or 3 hrs here.
Jamie Dumont
Beautiful. Visiting a lighthouse was on my list for our Maine visit and this one did not disappoint. Absolutely postcard picture worthy
HK
Such a beautiful landmark. Ample parking space / serene and beautiful colors plus the ocean breeze made my Portland trip very memorable.
Richard Cevallos
Great location to capture some great shore views. There are multiple sites to stop at so it’s not a one and done place. Good for walking. The lighthouse looked great and the “bite into Maine” food truck is a must!
Dave Bunch
An easy stop flying into Portland ME.
Pretty busy for a fall Tuesday but plenty of room to meander around.
Clear day offered good photo opportunities of the lighthouse and around the property.
Shannon Gauthier
Pleasantly surprised. Came to see the lighthouse and museum. Thought we would spend an hour or two, but ended up spending the day. Definitely one of the best views in Maine. Museum was small, but very worth it. My children loved learning the history of the lighthouse and the military base that was there. You can't got into the lighthouse itself as it is run by the coast guard. Walking paths that were breathtaking. Bring a camera. Wear comfortable footwear. You can climb down to the water and all over the rocks and crumbled remains of the military bunkers and such. Small beach, not really for swimming perse, but some people put their feet in and such. Some scuba diving. Lots of picnic area, some picnic tables and charcoal grills. Bring a picnic lunch. Parking is metered with kiosk, but if you are going to walk around park in the over flow parking, it's free and not far away.
Rob Faubion
The grounds were impeccably kept and the lighthouse did not disappoint. Climbed on the rocks for some great pics too. Great place to spend an afternoon and go for a nice walk.
Ryan Pence
Portland Head Lighthouse is a great spot to stop while in the area. Parking is cheap and the views are tremendous!! There’s lots of random food and ice cream options that make it a nice place to take the family for the afternoon. Check it out when you get the chance.
Sean Asbury
Awesome park with loads of history attached. Ample parking. Plenty of picnic locations. Very windy.
Potjamarn Arpornratn (Yui)
When we arrived, there were lots of tourists talking photos. View is gorgeous. One of must visit landmarks.
Dana Ze Bunster
In a word, stunning. Beautiful park with fantastic views of Portland Head Lighthouse and the bay. Lots of people in October but the park is so big there’s plenty of room. Excellent signage, easy to find.
Sameer Bhanushali
This is a very lovely location at the coast line between mountains. The main attraction is the light house and sea view. You can enjoy the most beautiful sunset from this point.
MaryJane Mudd
My husband and I visited during a trip to Maine and we were amazed by the beauty. We strongly recommend visits to this stunning, historical site.
Florence Trudel
Pretty great park but you have to leave the park before the sunset wich is pretty sad. There was still, a lot of light and the sunset would have been still at least 30min to 1hour. A guard in golf cart is making sure everyone left.
Dee Shah
Peaks Island good classy place . lighthouse park beautiful- pls keep mosquitoes repellent if you going.
Alina Abbas
Such a beautiful area. We spent some time just standing looking at the water. It's absolutely magnificent.
James Knick (Jay)
Portland Head Light is our go to place when friends and family visit. Beautiful lighthouse with great views!
Greg Boyd
A very popular scenic lighthouse just south of Portland, Maine. Pay to Park is $5.00 minimum for 2 hours. Parking is for both Fort Williams and the adjacent Lighthouse.
Elizabeth Bryan
We came on a beautiful foggy morning that highlighted the significance of a lighthouse for boats and ships in the rough water before radios to warn fishermen of the rocks.
Eldon Pixley
This light house is beautiful and the park around it is really fun to explore. There was a fort around it and you can explore the runes
Arjun C
This place is 4.8 stars with almost 10k reviews and it’s probably because this place is gorgeous from the lighthouse itself to the shore and tide pools to the gardens for native plants, with expansive fields and picnic areas
Lisa Wayland
Love this lighthouse and the walk around it. Parking can be a bit crazy in busy seasons but otherwise it's totally worth it
Annika Jonsson
Cute landmark and surrounding trails. Only Porto bathrooms though. Some snack stands around the area as well. Boyfriend and I went bouldering along the cliffs which was great too.
Anthony Lerro
Beautiful views on the Portland coast. There is a little museum at the lighthouse which is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Not a ton to do there but an amazing place for a picnic or to grab a lobster roll from Taste of Maine’s food truck nearby. Worth checking out!
M L
What a stunning site to visit! Make sure to gear up warmly if you plan to visit during winter(super windy and freezing cold!🥶🥶) …
Ca Dixon
Great view and so happy to see that this light house is a part of history. Visited when I was a kid and the upkeep of it has remained intact and well taken care of. Beautiful place to visit. Course everything on the coast is just amazing.
Katie D'Amico
If you are close to Portland, Maine the Portland Head Light us something you should see. Even in freezing temperatures and strong winds it was a beautiful site.
Carrie Mann
We couldn't pass through Portland without stopping to visit this famous lighthouse! It was definitely worth the visit! Pictures just don't do it justice. Parking costs $2 an hour, with a minimum of two hours. There are plenty of areas to get the perfect shot. We did not visit too long, since we still had a bit of driving to do to get to our destination. It is absolutely worth stopping by to see if you are in the vicinity!
Jason B
One of the coolest lighthouse's we've been to! We've visited most of the lighthouse's along Wisconsin's coast on lake Michigan, but nothing really like this. What a cool place to explore. Also had lunch at "Bite into Maine". Other food trucks were available, but we would highly recommend this stop!
Ellyn Davis
Beautiful little park. There are walking paths and lookout areas, and a gift shop that is not open in the winter. Perfect place to go take pictures and enjoy the scenery.
Allera B
Awesome place to visit. Relaxing view! I always love the sound of water. The lighthouse was gorgeous. A vast space and a great place to picnic. It has food trucks, picnic tables and bbq grills.
Megan Thayer
We were passing through the area and decided to make a pit stop at the light house. We had our 34’ travel trailer and thankfully were guided by a park worker where we could park with our rig. It’s a short walk to the lighthouse. (I have attached a pin drop where you can park with your travel trailer).
The grounds were very clean, and pretty empty considering we were there around 0900 on a Wednesday morning.
There is a path you can walk on along the ocean, and a break in the fence so you can walk down along the water.
Also there are 2 food trucks in the area and a gelato place.
Overall beautiful views and worth the stop!
Karen Kendzierski
This is probably my second favorite lighthouse that I’ve visited. The scenery in that area is absolutely beautiful and according to one of the employees, if you stand to the left of the head light (facing the water), you can see 5 lighthouses from that point.
John Flores
Such a breath taking experience. The ambiance of the park along with the views are a great place to go with family or your significant other. So relaxing. Must visit when in Maine. Also it is free of charge... the experience was literally PRICELESS.
Jonathan Wong
Supposedly the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, definitely a pretty location. Lots of areas to explore in the park itself. They do close at sunset and I took off a star because the man chasing everyone out was a little feisty with his golf cart saying the park is closed. Understandably some may be slower to leave than others but expect him to be prompt right at sunset!
Joe N.
Beautiful historic lighthouse, with great views overlooking the ocean. Great for a quick stop, or to spend a day just taking it all in. The whole grounds are beautiful. Check out the old harbor defense forts!
Dave Habets
Awesome views over the ocean and the beautifully restored lighthouse.
Park rangers and very friendly and helpful (this goes without saying to all the people we came across in Maine)
Michael Szubrowski
Beautiful lighthouse and beautiful scenery around it. Definitely worth the visit if visiting Portland.
Steve Davis
Great stop on the Trolley tour, wish the museum and gift shop were open, but the food trucks were nice to have available!
Tim Cheng
Lovely; the grassy hills and ocean create a sense of vastness and freshness that's hard to describe. The horrible portable toilets were even tolerable as a result.
K P
Beautiful! There's a reason this is one of the most iconic spots in the US. Make time to make a stop here if you are anywhere close to the area.
Take a picnic lunch or grab a lobster roll.
Taylor Galas
So beautiful. Unfortunately it was raining so we didn't stay long... Maybe there 15 minutes. Didn't pay to park because we weren't sure if we were going to stay... Well we got a ticket. Our fault. Just pre-pay. Gorgeous area. Picturesque with incredible views.
Rachel Geise
Absolutely gorgeous scenery and beautiful lighthouse. You cannot go in it but Absolutely worth the drive and walk to it. Not far from the parking lot at all.
Rick Cutright
Great site with ample parking and easy access to views from both sides at different distances. Easy to get some good photos. Museum was Closed due to COVID when we visited but you could still explore for some nice photos. Definety take a little walk on the trail to the north and look back to the south for some great shots.
Ayon Ibrahim
Absolutely beautiful location. The scenery was as gorgeous as I imagined - I think coming at sunset helped, too. Really fun to walk on the rocks, too. You feel like you’re in a different, wilder world…
Kerry Smialek
The best lighthouse on Maines coast!! There is a $2 admission fee to visit the park,A little gift shop sits to the left of the lighthouse.I would recommend stopping here on your trip !!!
John Adams
Beautiful, nice trails, dog friendly and wheelchair accessible for the most part, you may have a little trouble with the hills!!
Joshua Sims
This is a gorgeous location is a historical wonder and probably one of the most beautiful locations I've been to. The museum is wonderful. It seems like no matter how far you walk there is always another little path to follow and a new place to explore. Over two hundred years old and looks like it could have been built last year. The Ram Island light station is visible in the background and it feels like you're a character in a novel. I would highly suggest you go early if possible, the morning haze on the water is a sight to see.
Nevin Marshall
Museum is very interesting just wish I had more time to spend the really look at everything
D T
This place is a must see for anyone visiting Portland, Maine. Not only are the views beautiful but there is also a nice walking path for people to see more of the light house and cliffs. There is also a children's play area and a small beach. Definitely recommend!!
Jessie Meyer
We weren't able to go into the museum because it's closed on Mondays but it is definitely a picture perfect place. It has a beautiful park where people were flying kites and a nice trail to the beach and lots of chairs where you can sit and eat or just watch the world go by. You do have to pay for parking but not to see the lighthouse or the fort which was nice.
Michael Berglund
Beautiful Maine shoreline. Nice walking paths. Was definitely worth the trip here. Only cost was parking.
Mark Fastner
Beautiful weather. Well kept area. Food truck with lobster roll and gelato, coffee etc. Worth the trip.
Millie Obregon
Stunning views and such a beautiful day! It’s definitely worth coming here to check out the area and the lighthouse.
Martha Mazza
Great place to roam around to see the different views of the Lighthouse and ocean.
Shanda Bailey
This place was beautiful. You could spend hours just sitting on rocks and watching the boats and waves. There was also a food truck which was nice. I highly recommend this place.
Paula Hutchison
This is a very scenic light house. Ocean waves crash the granite boulders, the fog horn blasts 24/7. There is a museum inside with historic information on the lighthouse and Fort Williams, a now closed Army base which surrounds the lighthouse as a public park. It is a majestic, peaceful but powerful opportunity which shouldn't be missed.
Martha Ward
Wish we hadn't missed being able to go in the museum and gift shop! Very cool place. I would go back if I was in the area.
Erika H
The most beautiful lighthouse I have seen. The park was not crowded, the entrance to the park is free, you just have to pay the parking time for 1hr we paid $4. The views are AMAZING and the park closes right after the sunset.
Barry Peterson
Nice lighthouse to visit in Portland. The food truck has amazing lobster rolls.
Nathan Roques
Maine is so beautiful with all the lighthouses on the coast. This one is definitely a must see. Only 20 minutes drive from Portland!
Roddy G
Beautiful place to visit and the park is very well kept. The lobster roll we had was delicious.
J. Garty
Gorgeous grounds, wonderful opportunity is to take many pictures. There were several a lot for parking, and a few food vendors on the grounds- gelato and lobster wraps. We spent about 2 hours exploring the various trails, coast/rocks, lighthouse the area, and attached park. The parking lots to have a fee attached to park, but walking around the grounds at self is free. If you'd like to go into the lighthouse there was a cost, we did not feel the need to go in as the views were mesmerizing in themselves and worth it.
Kevin Johan Wong
Beautiful historical landmark. Ample parking in chilly winter day. Make sure walk along to cliff side for stunning view from across a little insert.
Ryan Panchisin
Portland Head Light is everything one would expect of a New England lighthouse. The surf broke on the rocks with thunderous crashes, the coastline jagged in pattern far as the eye could see, and the lighthouse rose above the terrain in true fashion. The tribute to the ill-fated U.S.S. Eagle-56 was sobering and beautiful.
MB
Beautiful place. Good vendors great little museum. Food trucks or picnic tables to bring a lunch
Clayton & Cindy Putnam
Sept. 17, 2021 - Probably most iconic/famous Lighthouse in Maine ! ( Certainly most photographed) You picking up guests or dropping guests off at the airport. . . Spend 30 minutes here at Portland Head Lighthouse in Fort Williams Park ! I’d rate this higher than 4.5 stars, if the park would allow visitors inside this lighthouse!
The History of this lighthouse starts in 1790, when President Washington orders a Lighthouse to be constructed at Cape Elizabeth. A year later, ( 1791) the Portland Head Lighthouse stood 80 feet tall, and is 121 feet above sea level, and is visible 24 nautical miles away!
Today’s visitors are free to wander the grounds of Fort Williams Park. There are historical plaques about the concrete fortifications. . . telling how this fort served defensively in times of different wars. Plenty of room for picnics with family & friends. Buses drop off folks from nearby states, and Canada ( pre- Covid times). There is a gift shop and portable potties available. I’ve seen several food trucks along the parking areas.

Nice place to visit, it was warm for late November, we would definitely come back.
Duaa F
Beautiful and exceptionally scenic. Great sit down place with family. Food trucks throughout. I expected better bathrooms for such a regularly sought out place. It's just portapotties. There's also not a single trash can, which got us scratching our heads because the place is pristine.
Meenakshi Nawani
Such a beautiful lighthouse. There’s a nice cliff walk you can do. There are a few food trucks if you’re looking for a quick bite.
E. Mayo
Beautiful lighthouse! Surrounded by a nice park. Wear bug spray! You can't go inside the lighthouse. That's the only reason I have 4 stars.
Simply Wright Events, LLC Elizabeth Wright (Event Planner)
Beautiful grounds and awesome place to stop. We did it all here: lighthouse, gardens, mansion, and battery. Lots to do.
Eric Haffner
Beautiful and historical park, museum, and lighthouse along the Atlantic. There is an admission fee to enter. Easy walking trails going to several areas around the lighthouse and fort.
Adventures Of A Traveling Don (The Traveling Don)
One of the most beautiful Lighthouses I've ever seen in my life! The backdrop is worth it just by itself
Haylie Abele
Wow! What an incredible experience. My husband and I made it there in time for sunrise and wow! SO stunning! Words or pictures can’t do it justice, you must see it for yourself! Highly recommend!
Brian Hall
Beautiful scenery, really enjoyed the lighthouse and the rocky shoreline.
Amanda Collins
Beautifully maintained. Lots to look at and explore. There is a rocky beach that is "swim at your own risk". You do need to pay to park at parking meters.
Sandra Brimicombe
If you want to be calm and stress free for a while definitely visit this gorgeous place! Went on a Monday and it wasn't really crowded, the park is huge and the cliff walk was very well maintained and has breathtaking views with plenty of benches to sit on to relax and enjoy the view along the way. The lighthouse is so beautiful! A must see if you are in the area
Richard Pittman
Wow what a spectacular view. Absolutely love this place. This is what memories are made of.
Nicolas GD
A must go while visiting portland! the view is amazing & everything is so peacefull.
Paul Kuan
One of the MUST VISIT place Portland Head Light when you in Maine, best time to visit evening during summer and pictures were taking during Summer.
Nadine Lazorcak
We stopped at this spot on our vacation from Ohio because quite frankly how can you go to Maine and not go to a lighthouse? It was a picturesque location with gorgeous views and fantastic photo opportunities. You cannot go into the lighthouse and the gift shop was closed (it closed at 3) but it was still a nice stop. We ate at the Cousin's Maine Lobster food truck that was parked there. It was my first taste of lobster in Maine and it was delicious. Served hot on a roll with butter, there wasn't an abundance of lobster but it was a good amount and quite delicious. Not a bad price of $17 either, which was cheaper than any where else we had seen and great views while sitting at the picnic table. I don't know if they are always there but it was a great bonus!
Barbara d'Estaintot
Beautiful place! Great view. Free, paid parking, easy access. Bring a jacket it gets windy!
E. Home
Must visit place in Portland!! It's absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤ Picnic, restrooms and parking area.
Richard Lee
not too big park, very pretty light house and red roof house if you look from far. most of park is parking lots. min parking is two hours, there is no way you can spend two hours there unless you wait one hour for lobster roll. We took 30 minutes to take some pretty photos and walks a whole cliff walk, very short one
Nicole Courter
Really enjoyed our visit. The history of the lighthouse is fascinating the view is gorgeous!
Bluntman Chris
This place is so beautiful it is an absolute must see Show relaxing and invigorating Great place to bring the family a loved one or even your furry best friend Very dog friendly Reasonable rates on parking I would highly suggest checking this place out
Jason Michaud
Beautiful and well kept as usual there. The only thing different was the surprise of having to pay a meter to park a little closer.
I agree with the added revenue but its kinda an eyesore for the park in general.
Jessica Acosta
There is so much opportunity here. Great place for family and pups. Multiple places to sit and eat, run and play, relax and chat. Not much shade, so bring your umbrella, sunblock, and hats.
Kevin Kelly
If you love light house's, you'll love this one. Gift shop was closed due to staffing.
Tarang S
Large expanse of well landscaped area, that is picturesque and sufficient parking is available. The Lighthouse looks beautiful with the backdrop of Atlantic Ocean
Charles Vochatzer
Very long path out on boulders. Very windy. Nice view of everything surrounding the bay.
Felicia Gonzalez
Absolutely gorgeous!! Missed the tour, they close up at 2 pm, but you can still explore outside.
Beth Webb
Seriously beautiful lighthouse with rock cliffs and pounding surf. Don't miss it...you can view two other lighthouses from here. Magnificent
Maggie Mahan
Lovely walk around the area. Didn’t go inside but the outside was beautiful.
susanalasus
So beautiful, peaceful, and historical.

Eddie Davis
This is a must stop if your in Portland. Nice park with great views.
Andrea S. Valseca
It's a beautiful place, whit a very nice views. You can spend the time taking photos, eating ice cream, or just sitting, while you see the ocean.
Courtney Regester
Beautiful! Paid parking but totally worth a visit.
Eian Schrag
Ehhhh. Super touristy. No my cup of tea. Really nothing to do but look at a light house and move on. I was more impressed with the dense covering of rose bushes everywhere!
Mindy Sue
Quick stop. Beautiful lighthouse, gift shop, low cost museum ($2 per adult when we went July 2021), and cliff walk. There were also food trucks around the grounds selling lobster rolls and ice cream.
Frank Liu
We went to the park in a hot sunny day. The white facade of the light house against the dark blue sea forms a beautiful contrast. When high tide came, the rocks were buried under the big waves with a splash. The white sails were shining afar. I just love to enjoy all these in a breeze.
Christopher E. Ankney
Beautiful place! Surprisingly clean for the amount of spectators enjoying themselves! Extremely busy but friendly atmosphere.
Kerry Lau
Very photogenic tourist spot. Live up to the hypes! 10 minutes drive from Portland downtown. Don't miss the rocky shoreline with the very interesting rock formations, on the right side of the lighthouse.
Dafydd Vaughan
Lovely spot, beautiful views. Definitely try the lobster rolls!
Mike Chung
Visited Portland Head Light in Fort Williams Park, Cape Elizabeth, Maine on a hot, hot Summer's day. The sea breezes here kept the temperature in the mid to high 70's, veritably Nature's AC! Spent a most enjoyable afternoon there!
Jim McMichael
Awesome place to visit! Beautiful and a great history lesson.
Liam Theo Creative
The views are incredible, the only downside is just how popular it is and the amount of people.
Beth Hilmer
So glad we stopped. We were driving on our way from Maryland to Bar Harbor, ME and this was a great little stop to get out of the car and stretch our legs. It's part of a huge state park and it did cost nicer to park. There is also a lot of history here- so it was nice to walk around the old military areas and learn some about the park's other history besides just the lighthouse history. We went before Memorial Day, so unfortunately the museum wasn't open, but I'm still glad we stopped on our trip to Maine.
Surya Mohan
What not to love about this gorgeous slice of heaven on earth !! Absolutely love stopping by here whenever I travel to ME. Postcard perfect and historic lighthouse, the breezy sound of waves & the spacious park with adequate play area for the kids and camping/BBQ spots. Ideal for drone shots for avid photographers !! I can spend an eternity soaking up the beauty of this place doing absolutely nothing. Very highly recommended and will visit over and over and over again :)
Vivienne Staton
The view is beautiful. We took lunch down to the picnic tables while watching the waves and had a great time. We got some very nice pictures in front of the lighthouse! Only problem is that I wasn't able to find a trash can anywhere, which was weird because with all the picnic tables you would expect people to eat there and have trash leftover.
Rita Ghosh
Still operative lighthouse built in 1791 on a cliff with a breathtaking view in the Fort William park which is huge and very beautifully landscaped. There are many benches and picnic area in the park
Kri (Klmbean)
Very scenic area. We hit it on a beautiful day. Wish there was info posted about the lighthouse.
Margaret Needler
My favorite of all lighthouses. Kind of the granddaddy of them all. Whenever I go to Maine I visit. She holds a silent watch over the ocean.
Shay Prunty
Tons of history with a fantastic, highly informative museum. My favorite lighthouse experience so far.
Dawn Rocco
Absolutely beautiful! Nice area to picnic, stroll the path, see the well-maintained lighthouse, and take in the views.
Marcela Rodríguez
Very nice park well maintained...
Only issue..no trash cans anywhere!!
April Lee Uzarski
Great place to stop! Paid parking. Great views.
Maryellen Favreau
What can I say???? The most beautiful, well maintained and recognizable light house on the East Coast! Never a bad experience. If you go, please offer a donation to the Portland garden club that maintains the lovely flower gardens!!
Michelle Pacheco
A must see if you are in Portland gorgeous landscape. So peaceful
E
This is a lovely place, well worth a visit year round. It's the most photographed lighthouse in Maine for a reason - accessible, beautiful and a great location. Lots of room to walk, dogs welcome, many picnic tables and tons of free parking. We always take visitors here.
Robin Payne
This lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington and was built of field stones. It's beautiful! There's a great park, a small beach, trails, and beautiful flowers. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Plenty of parking, and it does have porta-potties. There are 2 food trucks: lobster & Gelato. We saw dogs catching Frisbees and a wedding the last time we went.
Mahesh Shanmugam
Beautiful place to visit for a day trip or for evening walk. Most wo wonderful light house ever seen.
Aaron Dunn (Big Twig Homes)
Being from Maine, this is one of my favorite places to visit when I am in the Portland area.
Angelo Luongo
Fort William AKA Portland Head Light.
Beautiful grounds plenty of parking (paid ) but good price . Easy walking areas if you stay on the paths. Photographic views.
Toni F
We went to look at the lighthouse and walk around for about 30 minutes after a flight. Gorgeous scenery. Very relaxing and well maintained paths to walk or run along.
Happy that there were food trucks for a quick snack!
Whitney Honeycutt
Absolutely gorgeous place with fantastic views & gift shop! You can see other lighthouses from here as well!
Jon Abbey
Really cool lighthouse with plenty of history. Stop by if you're around
Robert P
Beautiful place! Great area to walk around.
Gayle Scrappygirl1
Parking is $2.00 an hour. Plenty of parking. Outhouses. 🙁 Lots to do or not do here. Lighthouse is gorgeous, has a small museum inside, $2.00 entrance fee. We did not go in. Beautiful spots everywhere you turn for photographs. Be patient...lots of tourists. There's also a beach, very rocky, but eventually you get to sand. Also a couple of old forts...quite dilapidated, unsafe and entrance is blocked, but you can still walk around and peer inside. There are grills and picnic tables, so it's a great place to picnic. They also have a large pavilion by the first parking lot on the right. Great for large groups.
WILEY'S FLIES
Great trails and really nice un the off season. Gift shop only open weekends after October.
Carolyn Pereira
went when it was raining pretty bad but they had ponchos and umbrellas. you can access the base of the lighthouse but not go up (it is functional) $2 museum. You do have to pay to park. bathrooms in the museum for paying customers only or use the multitude of porta-pottys. Super cute gift shop. great photo ops. beautiful spot
Chad Koerner
Gorgeous! Site of the famous Christmas eve tax break ship wreck! Let the kids run around the old battery in the neighbor park with a great beach. Picnic tables and swings!
Wayne Jordan
Great views and a lot of history here. A photographers paradise.
Sydney Gesualdi
Definitely worth the trip! Such a beautiful light house.
Nancy Fletcher
I wish I could give this lighthouse a million stars. It is absolutely breathtaking. There is substantial amount of parking. Lots of trails with fencing to protect everyone from dropouts onto the cliffs. The ocean is beautiful especially when hitting the rocks.
Money Heff
Beautiful place to relax and see some beautiful sites.
Jay Borgen
Apparently the most photographed light house in Maine. Also the first US federally financed light house in America. This is from the tour bus driver who took us here. Thank him for that info. We took some great photos , and enjoyed the view of the ocean from there. It was a good stop.
Xin Yu Ai
Beautiful photos, nice place to climb out on the rocks and decently priced lobster roll in the nearby food truck
XY Z
Went there in the morning, although the angle of sunrise was not ideal for this time of the year it’s still very nice to walk around and appreciate the park. The pathway near the cliff is well maintained. The old battery only has the concrete base remaining, and some being used to support some picnic tables… How much time has passed.!Won’t it be nice a world without war?
Stephen Hoover
A must-see national historic lighthouse originally commissioned by Geo Washington. Well-integrated into the local community life, this is another gem in the diadem of parks.
Ron Pink
So peaceful and nostalgic. Just to adventure the grounds was enough. Lighthouse was closed when we arrived
Lorie Vitello
Absolutely gorgeous day at Portland Head Light! Stunning landscape, amazing views!
Kendra Darby
Wonderful and breath taking! A little tour inside for some of the history.
Vivek Raut
One of the top-notched place in Portland. Must visit its gift shop. Lighthouse offers some breathtaking views of the sea throughout all the seasons. Parking spots are easily accessible. Lots of food carts around. Happy place altogether.
W B
Very scenic and beautiful place to visit. The lighthouse museum was a great history lesson.
Michael Martin
Amazing sight with an interesting back story. If you take a trolley ride and then a Harbour boat tour, you will get a complete 360 degrees view of the Light house. And opportunities to take amazing pictures!
Jason Zhang
spacious park right before the head light and many great photo spots with gorgeous views! High recommend coming if you are staying in the Portland area.
Do mind your steps if you plan on climbing on to the cliff/rocks!
Larry Jolliffe Sr
Quintcential Maine..
The most photographed lighthouse in the world..that's saying something!!
The surf against the rocks is nice too.
Evan Bland
It was a lovely place to visit and walk about. Wide trails, plenty of space for picnic-ing and cook-outs, athletic fields for sports. Combined with Fort Williams and the history present in the closed army base, it makes for a lovely day trip. Parking runs for $2/hour, or you can buy a seasonal pass good through October for $15; it seems the wiser choice for visiting this iconic Maine lighthouse.
Angelo
Beautiful sights! Clean and a great park!
Theresa Thomas
I know I had to pay to park but I can’t remember how much it was… under $20.
Lovely views. Lots of trails to walk along. Beach access is near by as well.
I’m so glad I made the drive down while I was in Maine to see the other Portland.
Lynette Kiehn
Loved this place!!! Beautiful!!!! Your Platinum Team at Remax Alliance was here
Keith Allen
Wide open space for great views across Portland sound. Well worth the visit.
Lucas Brobst
Great for everyone. Ample parking and easy-to-use pathways.
Mike Clavet
Beautiful place to visit, if you are ever in the area I would recommend seeing this site..
Pam Hinkle
We didn't get out of the car. We drove in and came right out because there were no free parking places. What a rip-off! I've been there before and it's a nice place to walk around. The scenery is beautiful!
Douglas Mecca
Portland head light was built in 1791. Commissioned by George Washington and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette, it is the state's oldest lighthouse. Portland Head has a white conical tower and a Victorian keeper's house with a red roof and eyebrow eves on the porch. You can visit the museum in the former keeper's house, which sits in Fort Williams Park, off Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth. Many Casco Bay boat tours pass this light. You can also take a bus tour to the lighthouse. The tower is only open in September on Open Lighthouse Day, when access is very limited.
Marcus V
A beautiful day at Portland Head Light House - Lovely place, great views, easy parking, food vendors.
Emily Feldkamp
Can get VERY busy so get there early! There are lots of different places you can walk to to get better/different views of the lighthouse. We enjoyed walking around on the trails and seeing some of the old buildings around the grounds as well.
June Sargent
Truly breathtaking views, easy parking and not difficult to get there.
Henry Thai
Spectacular scenery. Especially a cruise ship was coming into docking nearby. Land view is massive. People friendly. But automated parking meters is confusing without assistance. Took me about 10 min to figure out a $5 parking permit. As to others.
Silas Murders
Beautiful landmark and views Bonus was the public playground on the property!
Stephanie Giordano
Beautiful place to watch the sunrise. There is a lack of parking and the gates don’t open giving you much time to get to the beach area so plan accordingly!
Joe Wallace
Ft. William's Park, Portland Headlight, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Is a great! place for the entire family, including your family pets. ( as long as you pick up after them, bring your own bag, I didn't see any bag stations)
There are picnic tables with barbecue pits,
I have seen signs that stated reserved on them, so I suggest that you call the Park office if you have questions about picnic tables and BBQ Pits.
Huge open fields that are great! for Kite flying, Frisbee and rest rooms and porta potties, throughout the 90 acres that the Portland Headlight sits on.
A cliff walk that has 4 ft. High security fencing to protect you from any un-eventful slips along the trail that stretches across the cliffs of FT. William's Park. (Safe for supervised children to walk along.
The views are nothing less than SPECTACULAR!
With waves that crash! Up along the cliffs.
Rainy, stormy days are my favorite times to visit Ft. William's, the waves are most active then and make great! photos.
There is a parking fee,
$2 per hour
$10 all day pass
$15 season pass.
Please read all Park rules and pick up after your selves and your pets.
I found this add for Lobster, they claim that they are at FT. WILLIAM'S at the following times.
Helen Vanderlan
Even without going in the lighthouse, gorgeous views and you can climb down the rocks towards the water.
Natalie Ionkin
Portland Head Lights is a happy place. I loved seeing the ocean and the lighthouse. Even the rain didn't take anything away from the experience of being by the ocean.
Lilli T
Gorgeous place with lots of parking. Very scenic and quiet. Pets are allowed here
Jeanette Barto
So beautiful! There's a nice trail to walk on looking out at the ocean. There were 2 food trucks at our September visit but unsure if they are always there. No restrooms, just portable potties in a field not near the lighthouse.
Brandy Wescott
Beautiful place. You can see the lighthouse up close, but cannot go in. I believe the museum and gift shop opens in June. Theres lots of walking trails and places to have a picnic. Families enjoying flying kites and walking dogs. It was a very nice place to visit. There is lots of parking and a place pay the meter. Looking foreward to going back and exploring some more. Definetly a great photo op.
Molly Detwiler
One of the most popular and beautiful spots in Portland. A must see for anyone visiting the Portland area.
Mark Dahmen
Cool place, park in the ball field across the street if empty to avoid parking fees.
Joe Jenkins
Super neat spot to take a walk, love the fact that it's located on a historic military property as well.
rodney alejandro
Beautiful historical site. Lighthouse was closed while we where there but the area was free to roam. Walked down on the rocks at waters edge. Careful of the waves crashing in.
There is a beach cove close and ample metered parking. I can imagine this place fills up during busy tourist seasons.
Wesley Holt
Fort Williams Stare Park is beautiful. Gorgeous photo ops. Pay to park and pay for museum entrance, but no restrooms. Only portable potties with no germ-x. It is really neat that there are food trucks on site.
Aaron Groves
Simply gorgeous view of the water. Excellent photo ops by the rocks and the lighthouse itself. I was visiting briefly, but it looks like they host events at the location. Plenty of parking.
Taylor Flowe
Absolutely stunning. This is the best place in the Portland area for viewing the sunrises over the ocean. There is tons of parking, beautiful grassy areas, and wonderful rocks that you’re free to climb all around on. There’s usually a group of photographers and sometimes fishermen there for sunrise, but it’s not overwhelmed by them. I haven’t been there for when the lighthouse is open for tours, but it seems like a nicely run place.
Florian Sass
Probably one if not the most iconic lighthouse in New England. Very pretty, the park and fort around it is also quite nice.
Tyson
Beautiful location! Loved visiting the lighthouse and seeing where the shipwreck occurred back on Christmas Eve 1886. Very windy on the day we visited but overall sunny and beautiful. Would love to come back and explore more during the summer.
Susan Metz
Beautiful to see. Saw it from the shore and then as we sailed out to sea.
Peter Uhlir
How can you go wrong with this view? Amazing.
David Heinz
Beautiful Park, well maintained, amazing views
Jessie Ceja
Very beautiful view very exciting Beautiful noise
Julie Rush
Beautiful place. Leave plenty of time to walk the trails.
Bob Dale
Gorgeous lighthouse well worth seeing.
Shishir Pandey
This place is awesome, we were there for the sunset and it did not disappoint us. The light house was beautiful in the setting sun. There were a lot of photographs in the evening.
Kynyetta Baez
It was an amazing walk with amazing sights. There was plenty of parking, it was pay by plate so 4 bucks for two hrs. The gift shop is cute with lots of pretty trinkets be prepare to spend some money!
Dileep Chandrashekhar
Pleasant historic monument and a head light.
Ronda Frary
Gorgeous Lighthouse & setting. Nice little gift shop. There were 2 food trucks on the grounds, selling lobster rolls, etc. We ate at Cousin's for lunch & enjoyed our lobster rolls.
Alyssa Myers (Aly)
This was the most amazing park. One of my best experiences. It was surreal, amazing and mind blowing all at once. I could sit here for hours and just listen to waves crash against the rocks. Unforgettable time!!!
John M.
Absolutely worth the visit. Great scenery, food trucks and a gift shop on site, a small museum of the lighthouse too (small cash entrance fee $2 adults $1 Children or you can pay in the gift shop with card too)
spencer wiegand
Beautiful! An absolutely gorgeous place that is utilized by the community surrounding it.
Aaron Renshaw
Must-see if you enjoy history and nature. Beautiful area with lots of hiking to get close to nature.
Ed Voorhees
Iconic Maine site and much more than just the Light. As with Nubble Light, it's worthwhile to visit any time of the day, any season, any weather. Lots of lawn and parking, great walks. If the food truck is there, DO NOT pass it by -- it will make your day complete.
Fei Huang
One of the most iconic landmark along the Maine Coastline.
The water is so clear that gave me mediterranean vibes.
There are Gelato truck and Lobster truck on site, and plenty of parkings.
Joe Adkins
Pretty awesome place, very picturesque.
Aman Kumar
One of oldest and first head light. Really mesmerizing to see this stone tower. Nearby park are very calm .
You can drive nearby and free parking available with public remote restroom.
Karthik K
Stunning views and great place to relax. Parking is relatively cheap and easy to get in and out. Candy stall and security in place. Light house is closed due to covid but definitely worth every moment spend there.
John S
Great view of the lighthouse from multiple locations and angles. There is also a rocky shore and sandy shore nearby in the park. Not terribly busy when we went, late August. No free parking that I could see but reasonable prices.
Roman Pope
The sight of the lighthouse is very picturesque. Everything that surrounds the lighthouse is scenes straight out of the movies. The park surrounding the lighthouse is quite big and very well maintained. There are also no homeless people like in Parks in Portland. There is a museum and a souvenir shop. The parking is paid and minimum for two hours. This destination is definitely worth a detour.
Keldon Cottrell
Born and raised in New Mexico I always dreamed of going to the coastal areas of Maine. I’ve always seen the lighthouse pictures in Red Lobster and wanted to go see them for my self. LOL. I can truly say, it did not disappoint! The water is deep blue and the rocky coastline is so beautiful. Can’t wait to return some day. 👍👍 …
John Walker
The lighthouse and surrounding area are beautiful.
Princess Patti Lanier
This was an amazing experience and well worth the trip! We drove from Georgia to Maine. I've wanted to go since I was a child so my mom gave me the trip as a Christmas gift! 😊 This was one of the main highlights of the trip! …
Eric Powers
Beautiful landscape and the NPC we met near the binoculars gave us a quest to visit 3 spots on location with some of the prettiest views, definitely a must stop if going to Portland. Quick 15 minutes and pictures for the lifetime.
Sandeep Pendyala
Really love this place. Great views. It was really windy on the day we visited. I almost lost my drone to the heavy winds while taking these pictures.
Zans Garrett (Zarkovi)
Everyone has been here and you'll meet all of them. This is thee classic lighthouse of Maine. Be prepared for either difficult parking or a bit of a walk. The walking trails in the background are actually pretty nice and go through some of the old fort. You can get down onto the rocks by the lighthouse and we saw at least one wedding happening there. You will pay for parking
Charlie Waterman
Cool place to visit, alot more people then the other lighthouses but worth going to. And hopefully Bite into Maine will be out front! Amazing lobster rolls. 🦞
Dylan Jodah
It’s ok of you like lighthouses. It wasn’t open-open, so didn’t get to experience much. The trails around the park were nice if you’re a walker type. Good open space for kids and and dogs.
Kim Bronakoski
As soon as we checked into our hotel and unpacked this was our first stop. I love lighthouses and this one has been at the very top of my bucket list for years and it did not disappoint, in fact, it surpassed my wildest dreams. The weather was a bit overcast when we visited this past Wednesday but nothing can take away from the spectacular beauty of this iconic landmark. Hubby & I checked out the museum which is very informative but I was a little sad that admission didn't include a trek up inside the tower but understand the need to preserve its integrity for the future. You could spend all day walking the paths around the lighthouse and the park itself and even though it was busy when we arrived, it never felt crowded. This was our first visit to Maine but it captured my heart so intently it hurt when it came time to head home to MD so suffice to say that we will be back next year.
Iurii Novak
Dream Lighthouse!!! Portland Head light house is like a fairytale!! Accurate and cute houses are settled next Head Light house and have grounded at the edge of rock. I could take a picture s from 3 sides and if I could get it more I will do that. Awesome place. A lot of positive energy here!!! 4 or 5 Parking Lots are acceptable for thousand cars. I counted couple hundred people here on Friday evening!!! You can seat on the grass and get a rest or simple on the benches. You can walk on rock seashore and take eternity breathe. Wow!!!
Kartik Bharadwaj
A summertime staple but equally delightful to visit during early parts of spring/late winter. You are bound to get great photos with minimal crowd and a lot of quality time watching the waves crash by. The drive through I-95 is totally worth your while. Also there’s ample parking spots if you are even wondering about it. There’s a lot of open space to actually camp around which I believe is what happens during the summer.
John R.
A highlight of your visit to Fort Williams Park, this light is very well maintained and offers fantastic views and a very nice walking trail. We were just passing through on vacation but would have loved to spend an entire day there!! There is food to buy available and so much to see.
Kris Palmby
Such a great place to in visit. Despite being incredibly cold when we ducked out there it was still amazing to walk around and see the lighthouse.
Jennifer Youssef
Picturesque and a fun place to visit
Mariah Piippo
A beautiful stop on my vacation! Even in the fog and mist, the lighthouse looked amazing. The park was a great place to walk around, and I saw people walking their dogs. The gift shop was adorable too. However, the gardens and view were the best. Bumblebees enjoyed the flowers just as much as I did. This was one of the most beautiful spots I've stopped at in my cross country trips!
Patrick Young
Very nice place. can be busy on the weekends. the park around the lighthouse is free, but it does cost to park. Not sure if you can go into the lighthouse or if there is a charge.
Vanessa Ou
This place is beautiful. It's large and has plenty of parking. Although when we went, it was a little foggy and misty, it was still beautiful so it must be gorgeous when the sun's out. There's fields to roam, sights to explore, rocks to be climbed.
With the rocks, be careful as it can get quite slippery. The tide came in fairly quickly as well so be mindful of that too. Other than that, I'd visit again ❤️
Thank you for being so good to me, Maine.
Vincent Porcella
I love this lighthouse! It's one of my favorites for New England. The views are SPECTACULAR, with many vantage points. The park is dog friendly. The areas close to heavy pedestrian traffic is on leash. Areas away from heavy human traffic is off-leash.
There is plenty of spots to picnic or play. On the morning I went there were people playing frisbee.
In terms of photography, this place is a goldmine! There are numerous places to shoot from including from the rocks. There is a path with spots every few feet to stop & shoot.
Recently this year 2019, they have begun to charge for parking. $2hr with a 2hr minimum. I believe $10 for 24hrs & $15 for a yearly or seasonal pass.
This is a must see lighthouse if you're ever in the area.
Karen G
This is by far the best lighthouse I have seen you can view this beauty and you can easily see 3 other light houses. The area is so beautiful a great place to bring the family to relax. Plenty of trails to walk all with the prettiest views. They have a area to have a cookout, a field to play soccer. There is even a playground for the kids. A great place to fly a kite. I had a very had time leaving here and I am planning my next trip there already. I highly highly recommend this location. You will not be disappointed trust me. This pictures are beautiful but seeing it in person is absolutely necessary.
Elizabeth Angasan
A fun experience! I didn't go inside the lighthouse museum as it costs a small fee, however the view from the lighthouse is amazing! There's some cute souvenirs in the gift shop. The paths around the area are pretty well maintained. There's a path leading down to a sandy beach that you can take a dip in (though the sign says swim at your own risk). There we large rocks around the area and plenty of kelp, but other than that, a great place to cool off in. The little food, dessert & local artist carts were great to have around too. Do note that there are public outhouses; not particularly pleasant, however very helpful. I really enjoyed my visit!
Melanie Tam
Portland Head is supposedly the most photographed lighthouse in the country (or world?). And it was a pretty sight to see. They have a coastal walking trail. However, you can only see the lighthouse from certain angles. Parking is $2 an hour but just make sure you check opening/closing times because I believe the lot does close. We came at around 1:30 on a Monday and while the lot was pretty full, we were still able to find a spot. But of course, as with any tourist attraction, the earlier you go the better.
Joshua Huffman
The lighthouse museum and gift shop are closed due to covid. But the entire park and area is absolutely gorgeous. We didn't need to go to the museum to enjoy ourselves for about 3 hrs. Their are plenty of plaques with historical information on them. Loved this place and highly recommend anyone visiting Portland to stop here for a few hours.
Kelsey W
GORGEOUS view of the sound and it was fairly easy for young and old to navigate and enjoy. Food trucks were dotted along ghe park as wel which was very convenient and delicious
Beautiful Butterfly
Awesome place for selfies and usies😂the scenery is breathtaking. Although, I would suggest warmer weather. It's was a little chilly and it was 50° but the wind coming off ocean knocks off about 10°. Overall Beautiful.. …
phillip mirick
This place offers breathtaking views of what I think of when I hear the word "Maine". Make sure you have an hour or more to explore the scenery. For the best photo opportunities, go past the light house and down the cliffside walk, make sure to have hiking shoes. This vantage has a good view of the water, the cliffs, and the lighthouse.
Karlena Lanza
We came to Maine in the winter to see all of the beauty the state has to offer! The Portland Headlight is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen! If you are traveling to Maine it is surely a must see!!!
Eric Lee
this is one of the best lighthouses I have been to. The sunrise and the sunset both have its own characters and I really enjoyed.
Marcellin Kopandru
Beautiful landmark! The park is also very beautiful, and spacious. The museum entrance fee is minimal; although, I did not visit the museum.
Most visitors are respectful, there was ample parking space during our visit. Cloudy days are not ideal to visit if you're from out of town and you want to take the best possible picture.
Em
So much history in one place! The park and it's views are absolutely breathtaking. Definitely recommend everyone to stop here to walk around the grounds for a bit. Parking is $2 an hour with a minimum of 2 hours (as of 7/22/19), but it doesn't cost anything to walk around.
Lance Woolfolk
It's a Gorgeous Lighthouse with a beautiful view of the ocean. They have a little souvenir store and a museum. They also have a few trails down to the water, with incredible views of the Lighthouse.
tim le
If you are visiting...this light house amongst many others throughout coastal Maine is a MUST see. I would recommend coming early in the morning if you want a stunning view, it is a sunrise worth waking up for. I hope you enjoy this Maine icon as much as I did.
Inna M
The gorgeous lighthouse, perfect location
Laura G.
This is a must see if you're in the area. It's absolutely beautiful. It's great to visit anytime of year. There's a great little gift shop. Not sure if it's open all year. I imagine it's closed in the winter. There's also a fort right there to visit that's very interesting. I've been here a few times in my life and it never gets old. It's just a beautiful place to see.
Daze
You can get super close to the light house. Lots of scenic views. We arrived a little late due to covid hours ending at 2pm. I believe if you are near Portland for a visit, this light house is a must visit at least once. Will look a lot better during dawn or dusk.
Natalia Bastian
This place is very nice as you can explore at your own pace very freely. You can get as close to the water as you'd like and you don't have to worry about being yelled at or breaking rules. The place is pet friendly and offers a very nice coastal walk. My only complaint is that you can't go up inside the lighthouse so you aren't able to feel like you fully experienced the lighthouse. I would definitely go again and recommend to anyone.
Biswanath Roy
A must visit place in Portland. Awesome place for photographers those who wants to capture Sunrise or Sunset, but check the weather first you need to have a sunny day to take great shots. Lighthouse also have a museum. It has big playground and plenty of car parking area. Parking fee is $2/hr but minimum 2 hrs means $4 you have to pay and maximum 10hrs. Great place for groups and family to spend some time with splendid ocean view. You can walk throught the Cliff walk trail, atrributes moderate. 👍
Sandy Found
We visited on Christmas day and it was beautiful! It was surprising to see so many others enjoying this wonderful landmark. There are trails to walk on and lots of things to see. I will go back again soon!
George Burns
Fantastic, although busy! Walk out the path to the right and around the fence to get into the granite rocks. Careful if they are wet, they will be very slippery. Best vantage point for pics of the lighthouse with the waves crashing in
Lyle Saperstein
If you are lighthouse sightseeing this is one you don't want to miss. If you want to plan a day it is inside a park. So you can sit and relax, have some food and enjoy the sights.
Julianne Lilholt
Really beautiful property all together. It's at Fort Williams Park with lots of grassy areas to walk around, play, or relax. I ate lunch there, which I brought, but there was a food truck there, too. The lighthouse is really nice looking and well kept. This was one of my favorite lighthouses in Maine!
Nikhil P
Even though the temp was in the mid 90s we couldn't complain because this place is amazing. Lots of parking at a reasonable rate. This historic lighthouse is maintained well and amazing sight to view with backdrop of the ocean. A must visit for all.lots of picnic areas. Beautiful views of the islands and cliffs.
Denise Ferguson
Portland Head Lighthouse is a historical place to visit. The view is gorgeous! Lots of beautiful areas to walk, take photos and just relax. Even though the lighthouse was not open to our tour group it was well worth the stop. There is a small gift shop on the property with lots of parking available. There is handicap parking available close to the lighthouse.
j h
This is supposedly the most photographed lighthouse in the US and I can see why. The view of the ocean and lighthouse is breathtaking! I visited in November and lucky for me it was not crowded and weather was still warm and sunny. However, I can see this place being packed in the summer months.
This lighthouse access is located within Fort Williams park. There are many trails to hike, relax, and enjoy nature.
Definitely a must see if you're in the area.

Absolutely beautiful. Went there actually for the lobster roll food trucks but fell in love with the views. The weather was perfect that day. There were a good number of people but didn’t feel overcrowded at all. There’s great trails along the coast to get the lighthouse from every angle (except obviously fro out at sea). Also have the ability to go out beyond the fence to climb around on the rocks to get some awesome pics for Instagram. Went with family but this would be a very romantic place to go on a date. Highly, highly recommend.

Beautiful spot - a must if you visit Portland or the surrounding area! Stunning views of the Maine Coast, and a scenic drive no matter how you get there.

A beautiful place to picnic and watch the sunset during Maine’s pleasant summer evenings. The rocks are good for climbing and taking in views of the water. There are also some nice walking trails!

Covid-19 information: the lighthouse museum is currently closed. However, this is still a must see for travelers. The views out towards Cape Elizabeth are spectacular and there are other historical landmarks within walking distance

It was beautiful and there were other sites around to look at. My only slight complaint was how expensive the museum was and you couldn't go in the light house (although, that's understandable completely). It was completely worth it though. It was gorgeous (especially for not living anywhere near lighthouses or the ocean)

By far the most beautiful lighthouse on our trip. We got up at 430am to be out of our hotel room at 530am. We got there just when the sun started to paint the sky in colors. Do your yourself a favor and get to see this before you die in person.

Great day minus the fog. It's a great place to walk around a bit and see the sites. The lighthouse is awesome with a spectacular view!

Breathtaking sunrises and views of the Atlantic, a wonderful lighthouse, and a huge beautiful park, what else can you ask for? We went there very early on a cold September morning and it was worth the effort. The place is in the middle of a big park with plenty of parking spaces.

Beautiful in any time of the year! Any weather, sunny, stormy, snow fall, rain, and even fog it is a stunning view. If you ride, this is a spot to visit. This location is where I practiced my photo shooting skills. I still have a lot to learn but enjoy the attached photos. This location is very family friendly. There are food trucks here as well so make sure you get some delicious jellato or ice cream. I found that mornings are the best time to go, try to catch the sunrise of this place. Everything about this place is beautiful, and even the parks are nice to have a nice stroll in. The people too are very nice and pick up after themselves and others. That is super dope nasty because a lot of times we see parks filled with trash because no one cares. But here is a great spot. Take some kites to fly! Want good couples photos? This is the spot for sure! Wedding, bachelorette parties , bachelor parties , retirements, heck any event this is the spot to get pictures at. Great pictures in fact, stunning view, and the sea breeze feels very nice. Must see location, even if it’s out of your way, if your anywhere in Maine! I have visited several times, and although there is a lot of parking for the area, it fills up quick. Vehicles come and go so often that you will for sure be able to find parking.

Lots of parking (must pay for 2 hours minimum) and plenty of space to walk/hike around. There is more to see at the park than just the lighthouse but I honestly didnt. The lighthouse is better than the pictures can even show. If you walk off to the right of the lighthouse (as you look at it) there is a gate in the fence and you can go play on the rocks by the ocean. There are plenty of great spots there for photos

Very Very fun place to go to free parking oh not free parking 6 blocks but otherwise pretty cool to go check out I guess it's the most important thing to see if you're in Portland

It's so beautiful and you can get so many angles for pictures. You can walk up to and around it. Very nice trails to walk around on. I love that this is available to enjoy.

Beautiful place to visit!

The most photographed lighthouse in the US and notably understood. Absolutely breathtaking and definitely worth the trip. Area is clean but where are the garbage cans??? You have to pay $10 for parking. You can climb down the rocks in certain areas AT YOUR OWN RISK. Has a cute little gift shop, and a few food trucks that offer coffee, coffee with gelato, and another one that has lobster rolls and various seafood options. Another thing off my bucket list!

I have always wanted to go here and I was not disappointed once I was finally able to check it out! I arrived a few minutes after it opened for the day and there were not very many people around at the time. It is located inside of a gated park and a bit of a walk away from the nearest parking lot, but not very far by any means. You should definitely go early if you want to beat the crowd! The only thing that was disappointing was that you cannot check it out at night. I so wanted to get some cool pictures of it while it was lit.

Lovely place near the ocean. It looks like a dream destination. The place looks very beautiful with a small trail and play ground.
Best place for family fun. You can pack your lunch and come for a picnic or you could try some amazing sea food near this place.
It has a small museum to visit. The island nearby looks great. Good view from this place.
Good parking space available. Mostly crowded in summer.

Great park with excellent views and photo ops! You could spend hours wandering through it. Very well maintained. Loved the food trucks and local artist stalls. There were not so many that they got in the way.

Amazing place with fantastic views. We visited this place on perfect weather day and we had best views. It has big park to sit and relax and can do small picnics as well.

Worth the visit and it's in a park so after viewing the lighthouse there's plenty of room to walk and enjoy a nice day out. Parking only cost $4 for 2 hours which was more then enough to enjoy the park. I loved visiting the lighthouse and will be back once covid restrictions are lifted.

We enjoyed a beautiful day outside strolling the park and viewing the lighthouse. Neither the gift shop nor the food stand right nearby were open, but the Take a Bite food truck did have delicious lobster rolls. We explored the Children's Garden as well and look forward to going back to visit the fort ruins.

Huge, beautiful, spacious, amazingly maintained, sprawling park. Plenty of available restrooms, different walking paths, and open fields. Lighthouse is beautiful but the coastline views are just as good! So glad we visited while in Maine!
Caroline Lee
Beautiful picturesque location. The lighthouse did not disappointment from pictures and other descriptions.
It was a foggy rainy afternoon but totally still worth it. Parking is a 1 hour minimum $2/hour payable via app or machine in lot (credit only I believe). The parking is only for the lighthouse lot, you can not change lots within the park. There is a museum and visitors center which closed at 2pm so we couldn't visit. There is also a cute gelato stand for treats and coffee.

One Best places I've been too. Such a good place. The toilets were extremely unhygienic. But the view of the ocean is a must watch. I feel in love with Portland after visiting this place. There is free parking. It's adequate. It was a shame that i visited this place in winter. Thus it got dark really soon. I suggest anyone who loves the beauty of the ocean to visit this place. It destressed My mind.
