Reviews of Maine Military Museum & Learning Center
Eric Lammers
You walk into the first room which looks like a banquet hall with the military items displayed on the wall. Then you realize there are more rooms, especially the main display room with oodles and oodles of cool stuff.
The best experience is to hang with either Lee, the owner, or one of his friends as they will walk you around telling firsthand stories and stories of various exhibit donors. The collection of items is phenomenal, but being exposed to men with these stories makes this one of the best.
If you can, go on a Saturday and you may get lucky to meet one of few remaining WWII vets visiting. He lives nearby and comes often. And he has items on display.
Definitely the type of museum worth visiting multiple times.

For us, this has been the BEST military museum we’ve ever visited. The array of collection were incredible and in such abundance. The personal stories attach to each exhibit were so memorable and heartwarming. What truly made this for us is the special attention and the extensive knowledge of staff, who are volunteers. Coming to this museum was a wonderful treasure find that we included in our vacation itinerary. Million thanks to Lee and Peter for making our vacation worthwhile.

My wife and i where BLOWN away when we walked through the door! Then we where greeted with kindness, smiles, and knowledge. The place is amazing, and is well maintained. There learning center is unbelievable. The history and the knowledge of the history will leave you speechless. I have never seen, and probably will never see another place like this! We spent close to 3 hours here and there is soooo much history here. Very very nice people. I look forward to returning here when i am in town. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED place to see, you will not regret it. Thanks to the owner and his associate for everything!!!

Lee Humiston has created an incredible look into the past with special artifacts and the amazing stories to go with them. Call ahead as the winter hours reduce, and when you go, get there when they open because when Lee gives you the tour, you will want to stay all day!

I am so glad that I was able to visit the Maine Military Museum. It was a fun and rewarding experience. Admission is free. You can definitely spend a couple of hours walking through every exhibit.
The amount of artifacts in the museum is pretty amazing. And most of the pieces that you can see are donated from veterans and their families. You can do a walking tour on your own, but if you can have Peter or Lee give you a guided tour you’ll be in for a treat. They know every corner of the building and they are very knowledgeable. 5 stars across the board. You won’t be disappointed if you want to learn a little about America’s military history on your vacation in Portland.

My family and I recently visited this museum while on vacation in Maine. Me, a 14 year old history buff, was amazed at everything the museum had to offer. From images of soldiers to uniforms to guns, Lee (the caretaker) had a collection of everything. He is one of the kindest and most knowledgeable person I have ever met and his museum was truly an experience above all others. He is an amazing guy and he truly makes every guest at his museum feel special. This museum is a must see for all!
Christopher Trzaska
One of the most amazing and captivating museums I have ever been to. Lee and Peter are the most welcoming, knowledgeable, and friendly people you will ever meet. The artifacts and exhibits contained in this museum are truly one of a kind. The museum contains amazing original pieces spanning hundreds of years of US military history. Wandering around the various rooms I found myself losing track of time in a way I have not felt in years. The museum may be off the beaten path but it is absolutely worth making a trip out to. I cannot wait to go back!
Its Richard

There is so much snagging history here! And, all the historical items have been donated by families and veterans. I highly recommend visiting!

My son (a fourteen year old) discovered the museum during our vacation in Portland. Our visit exceeded all our expectations. Lee (Curator) is an amazing individual. He brings history to life with such passion and compassion that it was difficult to leave. My son walked away with an even greater appreciation for our country and the brave men & women who have served so valiantly. During a very difficult week in which our nation lost 13 brave souls in Afghanistan, we rang the naval bell inside in their honor. Whether you are young or old, military or not, come see this magical place. You will leave with a greater sense of profound respect and thanks for what the U.S. is all about. “Service above Self” is the museum’s motto. Thank you Lee and God bless!

Absolutely amazing visit. My boyfriend and I were trying to find something to do on a rainy day, and both being huge into history/military, we came across this museum and decided to check it out.. by far the highlight of our vacation!!! Not only is it free (we gavs a nice donation in their donation box), we received a personal tour throughout the entire thing and never once lost interest. You can easily be in there for hours looking at all the different areas and items. They were the sweetest, nicest most informative people and ill recommend it to anyone I know. My grandfather was in the Korean War and they even signed a beautiful book about the war and gave it to me in honor of him. (And even made one out to my father cause it was his dad) These people went above and beyond to make it an enjoyable visit, and i know we will always come back whenever we come out this way again. I wish i could give a 10 star rating! Thank you for such an amazing experience and for being such amazing people! 😊
Ashley Boquist

Easily one of the coolest museums I've ever visited. The volunteers are friendly and eager to share the personal stories about all of the items in the museum. If you appreciate military history, this is a must see.

One of the best experiences at a local museum I have ever had. So much history and factual information behind every single piece there. I will definitely be stopping in everytime I am in the area. All the staff went above and beyond to make the visit very comfortable while providing as much information as they could, as well as sharing their own experiences while in the service. Thank you all for what you do. Semprr Fi

This is a GREAT military museum! Upon arrival, one of the gentlemen gave us a personal tour of the exhibits. Many, many interesting things. You will be here a while. You will definitely not regret visiting. No admission charge. I gave a generous donation on the way out and I suggest that all visitors do the same to help sustain this gem.

Such a great place to check out! Lee the owner gave my sister and I a wonderful and stories filled afternoon of the men and women that served this great country. Revolutionary to present war. So many funny, sad and heartwarming stories. A place you'll want to check out! Donations welcome!!
Dylan M
I went there about 3 weeks ago with my girlfriend and the collection was stunning and breathtaking. We spent a good 2 hours walking around and reading everything, whether you're a fan of firearms, military history or American history its worth going!
Stephen Leonard
Mike gave me a great tour. A very knowledgeable guide. This museum has much to offer. All children would benefit from a visit there not to mention adults.
MIchael G
Amazing collection of military artifacts from the American Revolution up to today's conflicts. The curator is an extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly gentleman. His passion for military history is visible in his well preserved and very unique collection of military memorabilia; supplemented by his willingness to explain many of the pieces in the collection. Definitely a "must-see" for any military buff.
Meg Foster
This place is very well put together and the tour guides are extremely knowledgeable. I took my dad, who is a vet, here and he loved it. It truly is a hidden gem, and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in history, or just looking for something to do. It is free to get in, but please donate if you can!
Autumn P
really neat museum with ALL original artifacts (and there are a lot!) from a wide range of wars throughout US history. the curator Lee is super friendly! learned also that a new exhibit featuring all women is coming soon :) very cool.
Donna Crandall
My sister and I were there today to donate items in our father's name. Lee (the caretaker) gave us a tour of the museum, each section dedicated to a particular era or war. Mannequins were dressed in soldier uniforms, some included photographs of the serviceman or woman who wore them.
We knew our father's things would be in loving and respectful hands.
Joshua MacDonald
My family and I drove up here from Massachusetts because we really wanted to see it. Really amazing collection of artifacts. It’s great that they have relics from WW1. You don’t see that much anymore these days. I really appreciated hearing the stories attached to a lot of the artifacts. A lot of items donated from POWs. Highly recommend visiting!
Mark Lovely
Awesome Museum! Very detailed stories made the artifacts come to life! Very personalized private tour. Will definitely visit next time in Maine.
John Vedral
I was so impressed with this museum that I became a volunteer!
The Maine Military Museum will surprise you with the number of artifacts and the amazing time span that they represent.
The displays, especially the prisoner of war displays, do not glorify war but honor the men and women who served.
Maria Mininni Soulard
I really enjoyed this museum. I learned alot of interesting facts and the way it's set up is amazing. Real life like. Everybody was very welcoming and nice and full of information. I'd like to go back. I know you'd like this special place. Thank you.
Selena Beswick
I genuinely hope this establishment is always around. The owner is so kind and willing to do anything to support fellow veterans. Truly a unique museum and new renovations make this my favorite place to learn about military history.
Mutant's Dad
This small military museum in a quiet neighborhood is obviously a labor of love. Housed in an old VFW facility the museum has numerous military items from the Revolutionary War through the modern era. Most of the items are donated by Maine veterans and/or have a Maine connection. The two gentlemen their were generous with their time and were fonts of knowledge. There is no entry fee, but please give them a donation. As New England loses its patriotism it's nice to see at least one place that celebrates America. So if you have time please visit the place. An unlike the International Museum of WWII in Natick, MA you won't feel like a terrorist being processed into GITMO, but as a welcome guest. And unlike the virture signalers at the Wright Museum of World War II who have been destroying artifacts because they think guns are icky (and banning re-enactors as well because, again, guns are icky) the patriots who run the Maine Military Museum treat their artifacts with care.

Unbelievable collection of military items put together in a very methodical way. I was fascinated and could have spent hours. A truly hidden gem.
Pamela Ames
What a wonderful collection that Lee Humiston has on display! I can't wait to bring John Ames' military items there for all to see in perpetuity.
Samuel Noack
They are very nice people. They know a lot and have lots of great stories to share. It's completely free too and they get all the items from donations.

It was a great place if you like history of the United States, and POW facts, the people who do the visits (if they do it for you) they are very nice. I do recommend this place to others, maybe a little scary for kids, but besides that, its amazing.
