Reviews of Hoyt Arboretum
Great place to walk in the woods so close to the city. You'll feel like you're out in the wilderness but on a easy to walk trail. Love how many trees are labelled so you know what you are looking at. The bamboo forest is pretty neat. Not that hard to access with transit using either the bus and the park shuttle, or just taking the MAX Red or Blue Line to the zoo station and walking down.
Beautiful natural oasis close to the city. Entry is free and you only pay for parking if visiting by car, which is $2 an hour or $8 max a day. We walked the redwood trail which takes about an hour and only went back to the car because it started to rain. Highly recommend this trail as the enormous trees are awe inspiring.
So many trails to choose from! A little muddy in spots, I would suggest wearing hiking boots. Only walked through a portion of the trails on the west side of the visitor center building.
For some fun interesting sights, grab the kids adventure map in addition to the full map. We saw a tree hit by lightning 40 years ago.
Also, Hank (a visitor guide with arboretum) is great with tips and directions!!!
Great variety of trees and paths (even shortcuts) to take. You can take an hour and a half and see the vast majority of the park, or take three or four and not be bored or going in circles. There is plenty of parking, and some good views (not of downtown). Very family-friendly... Saw a toddler walking through.
Magnificent arboretum! Huge collection of trees, great volunteers, endless paths and trails. Pay for parking. Visitor center and store with bathrooms. Picnic areas and covered pavillion. Some paths are ADA accessible, many are not.
This place (Since 1928) proposed to conserve endangered species and educate the community, Hoyt Arboretum encompasses 190 ridge-top acres and 12 miles of hiking trails just minutes from downtown Portland. Home to 2,300 species of trees and shrubs from six continents, Hoyt Arboretum is a place to contemplate for a relaxing and serenity moment. You can join Washington park and see the Rose Garden and play tennis !
Beautiful hiking trails through a variety of different trees and shrubs. We especially loved the redwood observation deck. Trails are well maintained and well marked. You could spend an entire day here.
This place is so huge and beautiful. We spent about two hours here and could have spent more. Remember to bring water and it’s kind of a hike, I have vertigo so some places were pretty steep but I have never done really steep hikes so I feel like it was a good starter.
Folks should know that the trails are easy to walk (lots of small hills and valleys) and that this "living tree museum" is designed to provide color and interest in all seasons (for winter it's holly berries and camellias; in the spring the magnolia blossoms are incredibly showy). Make sure you stop and take time to explore/look around: I thought a tree had been carved into and my husband pointed out that it was insect activity - so cool. And, you can park pretty much anywhere in the park - but obey the signs and leave ZERO that's valuable in your car Thieves are pretty common and they've smashed windows even in crowded spaces, so just beware so that you can enjoy yourselves.
Peaceful place for an east walk or hike with kids or family. It is nice and serene and the trees provide a wonderful cool place to explore nature. I definitely suggest this place if you want a good quick hike with young kids.
beautiful area. lots of trails with clear signage -- from a 30 min loop to a 2 hour loop, there's something for everyone. the area we parked in didn't have many spots, but we were able to find parking easily due to it being a wednesday morning.
Dog-friendly place with affordable to free parking throughout. The visitor center has restrooms, a small gift shop, and printed maps. Trails are well marked with trail names, directional arrows, and milage. Plenty to explore for a couple hours to a full day. I've never seen so many species of holly before. The mountain viewpoint is great, but we could only see bits as it was very cloudy. The Bamboo garden is a don't miss. Would recommend.
Wow! Just amazing. Hundreds of acres with dozens of trails that you can walk through and see all kinds of species of trees including some of the rarest in the world.
What a great urban escape! So much space you feel you have the area to yourself! Plenty of benches to stop and take in the natural landscapes and soundscapes. Long trails and short trails to meet your needs! Definitely worth a stop!
theres a free shuttle that ends at 7pm. if you miss it you can take the max which is portlands train service. however i do recommend doing some trip planning if youre not driving since some of the areas are pretty far apart and it can feel a little scary to not have a plan after the sun is setting.
the rose garden was stunning and so was the aboretum. i recommend bringing hiking shoes for the arboretum as some parts of the trail were pretty slippery.
Beautiful and quite. There’s a shuttle that will take you up to this amazing area. There’s a several resting areas. Here’s my friend John as we walk through the arboretum 🙂 …
Breathtaking sights here. A wonderful trail and especially beautiful since it snowed. Just make sure to bundle up because it gets chilly in the evening!
Huge park with miles of well marked trails through themed areas of the arboretum. We'll worth a visit.
Fantastic Arboretum! Love all of the plant/tree identification/info. They have trees from all over the world and there are benefits to visiting in all seasons. My personal favorites are the magnolias in Spring and the Redwoods any time of year!
Beautiful redwood trail... really simple trails all look generally the same but on a sunny day after rain it's beautiful
Parking is cheap at $8 for the day or $2 an hour. Every trail is worth seeing. There are restrooms and a gift shop at the parking lot.
I love this park! It is such a great place to explore! I am a professional photographer and they have beautiful weddings and it is also a great place for portrait sessions. Whatever your reason for visiting, just make sure you go!
The best arboretum I've visited - such an incredible variety of trees from around the world, all planted throughout several gorgeous trails. The layout of Hoyt creates an immersion experience where you are truly surrounded by the quietness of the woods despite being in the middle of the city. Many trilliums, blackberries, and ferns line the trails while tall redwoods, oaks, firs, and spruces cast their long shadows over dirt paths. You can focus on exploring one type of tree by sticking to a single trail, or connect trails together to see more variety.
There is something for everyone here, whether you are interested in learning about plants, birding, or just taking a break from the business of city streets.
I highly recommend visiting - often if you live here :)
Beautiful scenery with lots of trails! So many trees! We walked from Hoyt to the international rose test garden! We took public transport so no need for parking.
One of my favorite venues for small weddings! As a wedding photographer, I enjoyed the scenery and easiness of the location. Such a stunning Portland find! I'd love to be hired at this location again for more weddings to come.
The Magnolias are blooming! It's a gorgeous park and I loved the bamboo forest addition! I could spend days wandering these paths
Super beautiful! It has different trail loops depending on how long you want to hike (est 30 mins, 1.5 hr and 2 hr). There is Parking and restrooms in the visitors center.
It’s huge place. Nice, Beautiful and Quite.
Easy trails for beginners. Dogs must be leashed on trails.
Great place to stop by for an hour or two if you're visiting the Portland area. Lots of beautiful sights and smells. Some of the paths were so quiet, it almost felt like I was actually walking on a mountain side on my own.
Beautiful spot to see redwoods with nice, well maintained trails. The staff at the visitor center were so nice and helpful!
Great hikes with varying difficulty and length all from a good home base. The staff were nice. Kid and dog friendly. I'd stay by the overlook trail if you have any wheels since the stroller walk had a few roots, inclines, and width issues. Restrooms were clean enough with soap, water, paper towels, and LOTS of toilet paper.
The trails are clearly marked and there’s a great map at the visitors center and website (also in photo below). If you are new, the 30-minute, 1-hour or 2-hour trails are perfect (I recommend starting with the 1-hour trail).
The thing that makes this place special is they have trees from all over the world. Hiking in the PNW is great, of course, but it can feel like if you’ve seen one trail you’ve seen them all. There is a lot of variety at Hoyt.
Other things I like are that the trails are easy, with minimal elevation, and even in summer it is mostly quiet and uncrowded. In addition to the trees, there are some pretty flowers in the spring and summer. I haven’t been in winter but I imagine it’s cold and wonder how many leaves are out.
Another thing to keep in mind is the trails are labelled with times that give plenty of time for stopping and looking. The 2-hour trail for instance is only 1.25 miles.
Love the trails at Hoyt Arboretum, and seeing the seasonal changes. Last week's leaves have fallen and camellias in the winter garden are starting to bloom.
Beautiful array and diverse tree groups, with charming fairly well worn gravel paths.
The trails are a bit narrow at points for wider folks. Parking is very limited and many choose to park along the gravel shoulder. Park at your own risk. Remember there are no bathrooms or drinking fountains along the trails so go before you go and bring water.
The smaller fence signs we found confusing, with fewer benches than we would have liked.
However the woods and peaceful paths are utterly remarkable, considering just how close to the city center the arboretum resides.
The absolute crown jewel of Portland nature walks and trails. Its worth the hassle of parking and perilous peak times path sharing.
Beautiful trails. Love seeing different trees from around the world.
As an arborist.. I get to go play in the trees at the Arboretum one day a year, and volunteer with lots of other local arborists to help preserve and take care of Portland's living museum of trees. If you happen to be walking the trails on this sacred day... please.. enjoy the show! And take time to appreciate the trees around you.
Another beautiful day to be an arborist in the arboretum!.. cleaning up dead limbs and reducing hazards. So feel free to walk through this amazing place and know you're safe!
Beautiful area, with trails for different abilities. We've really enjoyed getting back in shape after Covid at-homeness, and the easy to medium trails have helped us do that in a lovely setting, without overdoing it.
Super pretty hike/ walking trail with tons of different trails and places to see
I brought my three kids, 8, 7 and 2.5. It was perfect! Lots of fun places to see, easy trails for kids! Not really great for large strollers on some paths. I love the signs and there are tours if you want them.
Park of the Washington Park area, and adjacent to Forest Park. Paved walking trails, an interpretative center, and lots of nice views. For more Park like amenities like picnic tables and playground, go to Washington Park, for more hiking trails, Forest Park is the best bet. But here, if you're interested in a short walk or seeing collections of rare and interesting plants, the Arboretum is a nice middle ground.
I only went around for about half a mile on the redwood trail, but just from that little bit I saw I loved it! Everything was so beautiful, well maintained, clean, and serene. I can't wait to go back and explore all the trails.
Different trails with different skill levels. Visitors center helpers were very kind.
Absolutely gorgeous place to explore within the city and not go far. Trees from all over the world, unique sections to walk through, and a particularly special treat during spring and fall. Really lovely gift shop that's entirely not for profit, go support them!
This is another special park on the must visit list if you have a bit of time in portland. There are hiking trails originating from here and extending into forest park . You can rent the pavilion, which is stunning, for an afternoon event ( like a wedding!) for a nominal cost (considering the setting!). Park at the visitor center across the street and stop in to say hello.
A vast arboretum of unimpeachable beauty and illimitable variety. The Redwood forest inspires profound and ancient feelings
I love this place. It's a must see for anybody visiting Portland. It was designed by the same person who did Central Park in New York. The trees are beautiful, the grounds are well maintained and it's even pretty when it's raining.
Lovely space that makes you forget you're in the city. Check out the calendar of events and guided tours. Lots of walking trails. Easily accessible on public transportation.
Tons of trails to hike and run! If you are new to this area, navigating the trails can be a little daunting, so pay close attention to the little trail signs. I really appreciate how comprehensive and clear these signs are, they are at almost every intersection (though sometimes pretty small) so once you know which trail you want to follow or turn to, it's not that easy to get lost.
Great spot in Washington Park. For here you can go north to check out the redwood observation deck and cross Burnside to climb up to Pittock Mansion; or go south to the Vietnam Veteran memorial and Oregon Zoo.
Wonderful place for small hikes within city limits. Connected trails to Washington park and lots of different routes to explore. Kid and pet friendly trails.
Hoyt arboretum is one of my favorite places in Portland, the trails are so well maintained and the views are gorgeous year-round. There are benches every little while, a few good picnic spots, and the visitor center has decent restrooms. A great place to find solace without leaving the city
This place was so peaceful and beautiful. Exactly the kind of place in the middle of Portland that one needs to feel fully grounded.
This is a beautiful sanctuary very near downtown Portland. It is one of the few free activities that can renew your spirit and set the mood for to celebrate an occasion.
A Beautiful forest not far from downtown. I loved this place. It was not a stroll with trees around lawns like I was used to in other cities. Instead, there are many paths through forests; you can choose an easy, quick path or a moderate path for varying amounts of time. The paths are well marked according to which trees or shrubs you'll encounter. I highly recommend the path to the redwood deck. It was magical and awe-inspiring.
Had a lovely time exploring the complex network of well marked trails. There is an impressive diversity of tree species and a real depth in the educational signage and resources throughout the arboretum.
The visitor center staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and the gift shop was small but well stocked. Bathrooms, water, and free trail maps were available.
The Hoyt is a magical museum of trees within walking distance of downtown Portland. 12 miles of trails will take you through a magnificent collection of magnolia trees, a redwood forest, a winter garden blooming year round, maple trees with amazing autumn color. And that’s just the beginning. It’s one of the most beautiful parks in Oregon and is not to be missed. No wonder people journey from all over the world to walk through this living museum!
Truly a treasure just minutes from the heart of downtown Portland. Its easy to get lost on the trails here in a good way. Its perfect for walking, running, or just enjoying some time away from the city.
What a gem. Definitely a place to visit more than once. I’d love to check out other trails and visit during other seasons.
Unbelievably gorgeous park with Redwoods and other old growth trees. Truly amazing! I highly recommend taking a photo of the map to guide you.
Beautiful place. The lady in the visitor center was over-the-top friendly. As a none hiker, the map was hard to follow on our own, however if you kept moving you were going to hit a post telling you exactly where you were at. Have the say throughout the arboretum if you felt lost, the path to get back to the visitor center was very clear. Paid for 2 hour parking.
What a great place to visit in Portland. There are so many trails and a small visitor center. You can hike on either paved or non-paved trails. Good for strollers. Enjoyed the abundance of trees and there is also a shuttle. I definitely want to return to discover some more.
Good place for hiking. If the weather is good, you can sit on the grass and have picnic. It's really comfortable.
Beautiful trails among magnetic trees, such variety! Highly recommended to anyone looking for an hour or two of escape from the city 😊. Enjoy! …
This area of town is one of the most wonderful to visit in Portland. The air is filled with pine smell and the numerous trails around make this natural space exceptionally fun and peaceful. You can enjoy a picnic with your family while enjoying the great views, meditate by one of the enormous trees, or come to hike for a while—a great workout! It is just amazing how close you are to the city but at times as you walk around you can’t even notice it.
200 acres of gorgeous walking trails featuring dozens of species of trees by trail - the redwood trail, the fir trail, and the magnolia trail are personal favorites. Fairly easy hiking, and family friendly! I pushed my toddler in a stroller all over the park without much difficulty. The paths are generally smooth. Excellent spot to exercise! After the first time, I went back the next two days in a row because I had to see all the trails! Also a great spot to birdwatch.
While we only walked a small portion of this beautiful park, we were blown away by the beauty! So many incredible trees and we loved seeing the last of the stunning fall colors. We were also there on the Veteran’s / Remembrance Day weekend and the memorial was reflective and fitting.
The Hoyt Arboretum is a lovely space that has many different trails that will take you to the various collections of trees that the Arboretum has in its collection. They also host free guided tours of certain sections occasionally, so make sure to follow them on social media. The best part is that this is all free, although I would suggest making a donation to the Friends of Hoyt Arboretum if you enjoyed your time there
Ahhh what a place. Wonderful to come visit with friends and family.
Nice place to walk to pups or jog.
Lots of trails and shade. Beautiful views and aroma of flowers stunning.
We also visit ranger station- lady was very knowledgeable. Give us a map and suggest us what we can see and knew Park very well.
Love it.
Park on the side of road where there are trailheads. Although it can be busy, there is always a chance to find parking. The trail system is like a web and can expand to cross many roads. However, remember where the car is parked is more important than where you got lost in the trail, as there are always people hiking and can direct where you are. But never your car.
Beautifully maintained trails are complex enough that every visit feels like the first time, and even though there are loads of people, you feel mostly secluded. Adventure challenge: see if you can find the redwood deck!
This is awesome for a stroll. The grounds are well taken care of. You pay for parking everyday beside some holidays. The trails are so tranquil. I love this covered area.
A lovely place to hike amongst the trees. Lots of beautiful specimens, views, and trails.
Not a difficult walk, and dog friendly too. You can even walk to the rose garden, zoo, and more. Worth visiting each season, to see the different changes and blooms. Pack a lunch and make a whole day of it!
The fall at Hoyt Arboretum is the BEST in Portland hands down! One of my favorites for a shoot that time of year.
Beautiful even in the winter, the mists made for some stunning vistas. Everything is well laid out and signage is good. Paths are VERY slippery though.
This is a large hilly arboretum, free to the public, with a wide variety trees to learn about, loads of meandering trails to explore and get lost on and a good place to find peace, quiet and fresh oxygen just minutes from downtown. There are sections with redwoods, pines, hollies, oaks, cedars, elms, etc. mixed in with the predominantly Douglas Fir and Hemlock forest. The 30-mile Wildwood Trail winds through it.
This is such a great, quiet place in the middle of the city. There are lots of trails, but nothing too strenuous.
All of the different types of trees make the arboretum unique.
I loved the redwood section.
This was my favorite part of our trip to Portland. At the beginning of our hike it was just interesting reading the names of the different trees. As we went further along we began noticing the subtle differences between the different species, and really enjoyed the diversity in the trees, as weird as that sounds. You could really spend a couple days here and not see everything. Parking was pretty crazy, but it wasn't very crowded once we got away from the visitor's center. The Arboretum is a must see if you are visiting Portland. Very relaxing and enjoyable.
Gorgeous display of trees we might not see anywhere else. This time of year is perfect to see the various deciduous trees losing their leaves making an array of colors on the ground. Truly beautiful. These pictures don't do it justice.
Amazing experience in the living museum. Once in a life time trees and the energy is amazing ;) not busy at all
Portland is very fortunate to have the Hoyt Arboretum. This is one of the top Arboretum's in Northern America and in my opinion is a must go if you're in the area.
We only had an hour here and only got to see a small portion of it.
Not bad. The Nature was good; but the Welcome Center was closed and the restrooms were filthy. Not their fault really; but maybe have someone keep an eye on it? The Veteran's Memorial was pretty neat with plenty of picture opportunities and flowers and life everywhere to keep their memories alive.
We haven't spent a lot of time in the Northwest, but we were in Portland for a wedding. This place is so accessible - just a few minutes from downtown. We loved this place. We explored several miles of easy trails. I highly recommend this area if you are looking for an outdoor activity in the Portland area.
Best ceremony wedding venue ever. So glad we chose this location. It was beautiful in snow and in spring. Easy to get a permit for a party or wedding in our case. Just have to go through the lottery at the beginning of the year. But also great for hikes (free) any other time. So beautiful and peaceful. I wish this was right outside my door. Oregon is calling me and i can't not pick up the phone!
Trails are wonderful. The view from the mansion is amazing! The gardens on the mansion property are well maintained and beautiful!
Nicely maintained forest with lots of shirt paths, and roads leading to (or near) many of the interesting clusters of trees. An easy way to check out redwoods for this East Coast visitor!
Portland’s Hoyt Arboretum, situated between Washington Park and the amazingly beautiful grounds of the Pittock Mansion, is one of the crown jewels of the extensive park system within the city of Portland. It is a living library of trees, and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018. Many of the original plantings have by now grown into giant and beautiful specimens. The Arboretum counts more than 6000 individual trees, and more than 2000 unique species.
The visitors center is a small, nondescript building located at 4000 Fairview Blvd., yet it is packed full of interesting information, resources, free maps and guides, and staffed with a smart and well-informed volunteer and professional staff who can answer your every question. During summer months, free tours are offered on Saturdays, and professional tours are available most other times of the year.
With 12 miles of trails winding through Southwest Portland hillsides, there is a lot of ground to cover and dozens of interesting sites to visit. A couple of favorites include the Magnolia Trail, with over 120 of these amazing living fossils, whose spectacular flowers actually evolved before bees and other pollinators. Instead, they rely on beetles for reproduction.
Be sure to spend some time on Portland‘s famous Wildwood Trail, which winds its way through several parts of the park, including an incredible miniature redwood forest comprised of dozens of the oldest trees in the park. Although these tall beauties are a far cry from the astounding giant sequoias some 480 miles south, along the California coast, this little slice of heaven will give you a taste of the Pacific Northwest’s magnificent redwood splendor.
Perhaps most amazing of all, all of this is just 3 miles from the heart of downtown Portland. Quite literally a 10 minute ride from just about anywhere in downtown. An experience not to be missed!
beautiful arboretum right next to downtown portland. felt like the wilderness but also 5 minutes away from restaurants
There are so many areas in the arboretum to find a quiet corner to soak up the beauty of the park. Enjoying an early time.
Wonderful place for hiking, i love red wood trail, bamboo forest and wild wood trail to pittock mansion.
SPLENDID TRAILS! This beautiful Oasis is easy to access from Downtown and blends well into the rest of the trails in the West Hills. I had set off on a quest on Washington Park intending to go to forest park but stumbled on the beautiful landscape here. It was SURREAL. I spent a couple hours briskly walking and only explored small portions of this trail system. I would love to come back again next weekend or when the leaves start changing colour!
Beautiful walk/hike. Well marked trails. Foliage marked with signs telling you the species of each . Wonderful 🌞 …
Many loop trails that you can walk around up and down hills. It's almost impossible to get lost. My kids had a good time going there.
I came as a last little stroll before I left Portland and it was WORTH it. Fun little trails and lots to see, I barely made a scratch in the all the hikes I could have went on. The visitor center had a bathroom, and there was a garbage can at the entrance if you brought a snack. Overall very fun time. Sadly I can't show any photos here, since I took them all with my dslr.
One can't believe this park is in Portland. Ample parking space and lots of hiking trails.
It's looking pretty good up here. Portland's been very crazy. But the people that cause the trouble are too lazy to climb the mountain. It's also a nice neighborhood so if you needed help from the police they might actually show up. I would feel confident if I fell down up here somebody from the medical community would find me and help me. There's a few statues left that haven't been tipped over. I would feel safe bringing my kids here.
Great trails, many of the trees have a small placard with the trees genus and species on it both teams common names and the Latin names. So many different types of trees: Grecian Firs, Ponderosa Pines, and Japanese Beech just to only name a few. The diversity of plant and animal life is really incredible. There were some squirrels that began singing (or laughing) basically began making lots of sounds in a repetitive mannor as we passed under a stand of trees, then much later there were many birds that were all chirping at the same time above in the surrounding trees. Lots of different trails, many options. The trails were wide and we'll maintained, some of them were even paved.
Beautiful gift shop and redwood deck! Enjoyed my experience a lot!
Another Portland jewel. Went at lunchtime on a Thursday, not at all crowded, had a picnic in the shelter and it was beautiful. At aside at least 2 hours to enjoy the trails.
Beautiful place to stroll and learn about trees! Parking can be a little tricky so be aware you might need to park on the side of the road. Taking the bus might be a good option depending on where you’re coming from.
This tree museum has many beautifully maintained trails each of which highlights different categories of trees. You can have a short and easy walk or go for miles switching between trails. You might get lucky and see wildlife like this Barred Owl that was perched about 20 feet from a trail.
Easy, well maintained trails with user friendly parking. In the summer this is a very crowded attraction but worth the greenery and escape from the city. The clubhouse is very informational and provides details for local flora and fauna. Winter hikes are doable, but often muddier and reduced visibility (and less crowded).
Beautiful day hikes. There are so many places to hike here and nearby. Even on a gloomy day it is beautiful.and there are hikes of every ability level. Parking can be a bit tricky and the Arboretum opens early and stays open late but the visitor center has more limited hours. We met lots of people on the trails and felt very safe.
Nice place to stroll, especially in the sun. Would go back here
I’m a senior portrait photographer and I love this spot for a shooting location! I went in early November of this year and the fall colors were insane! Those intense oranges that everyone loves ✨
Beautiful place with lots of varieties of trees and plants. My favorite is the maple trail during fall season.
The fall colors are dreamy. Add coffee and grab one of the many perfectly placed benches throughout. You won't be disappointed.
Will never forget Hoyt Arboretum. Such a nice and beautiful place.
Many good trails with different plants and scenery. It will take us more than a few visits to explore the place!!
Such a beautiful place. Plan on returning, if you want to see everything.
So beautiful. Lots of different paths and trees. I do wish the map was a little more detailed, but we managed.
Even in a snow storm the arboritum was wonderful. There is 30- some miles of trails to walk. Dog frienly(on leash of course). Highly recommend!
My wife and I visited the arboretum in October 2018 on a visit to Portland. It was a rainy, misty day which just added to the beauty of the site. Hoyt is quite large and we only had time for a 1/3 of the trails over 3 hours of hiking. We’d love to come back in another season to explore this amazing gem.
There's something to see year round here. Great hiking trails and the staff at the information center were very personable. Photos from the winter garden.
I love coming here. Each trail is so different from the others and each season is a different view.
Went on a picnic with my girlfriend to this park and we love it. The parking.. not so much. I also took some aerial pics with my camera drone.
Nice place to do some hiking with kids! There are plenty of parking at the visitor center. The Google Map routed me to the Zoo parking only. I can spend 3 days just to do hiking around Washington Park.
Extensive trail system with different plants available to view. Many have identification labels. Displays provide additional information. Trails are generally well marked at intersections with directions to destinations. The free map available at the Visitor Center is advised. Restrooms are available at the Visitor Center. They were clean and well maintained. The parking fee in the parking lots can be paid with an app or at a machine in the lot. The parking near the Visitor Center tends to fill up early, but you can park elsewhere in the park and take the free park bus. You can also take the MAX to the Washington Park station and walk or take the free bus. The 63 bus also goes to the Arboretum. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trails. Trails can get busy.
One of the most beautiful local hiking spots. Several trails for people of all ages. There is now a paved trail from the main parking spot up to the viewpoint (great for strollers).
If you like to jog, the other side (going down to the Japanese Gardens) is steeper and more forested.
Highly recommend!!!
Such a beautiful place. Anyone who loves nature should take a walk here at least once.
A lovely hiking congregation of trails that sprawls over the hills.a wonderful mix of complete rural roads that lead into several other attractions like the rose garden or zoo.
The signage is frequent and very legible but even so it was quite easy to get lost. The shuttle near most road junctions was a life saver and got us right back where we started.
Gorgeous, with many trails, well sign posted, genus species names of trees, and a great view of the mountains.
Really interesting native and non-native trees along with trails sectioned off to the tree groups of your fancy. Clean and easily accessible bathrooms and cool park hours. I found a jack pine when I was there and was instantly sworn into Jack London nostalgia. Nice place to think.
So many trails to hike, grassy viewpoint of Mouny St Helens for a picnic, and redwoods!
Hour Arboretum is a gem. It features miles and miles of trails visiting groves of trees of various kinds, showcasing which is which with identification plaques either on the trees or on the ground in front of trees/bushes of that variety. Large open spaces and covered wooden decks also lend this area to picnics or other gatherings. We just took to trail and covered deck for a Cub Scout adventure last night and it was perfect for our purposes. Highly recommend!!
It was like walking into a fairy tale. This is a beautiful place to walk around. The surrounding houses are nice to look at as well.
I was blown away by the redwoods and conifers. Although they lack the incredible age and size of those in Muir Woods, some of them are impressive nonetheless.
We took a slime molds class and one on mushrooms. The guide was great. The staff in the gift shop are eager to help always. The trails are nice and markers plentiful to educate on the trees, shrubbery and other habitats. A lovely day can be had here. A ton to see and enjoy.
The redwoods, the rare conifers, the well labeled trees, detailed maps and routes, and expert guides make the Hoyt Arboretum a place you should experience.
Always love coming here. The redwood observation deck is just gorgeous. There's so much to explore but I keep coming back here.
A city treasure. Paths circle around highlighting different tree collections. The trails link to Washington Park and Forest Park.
Beauty at every turn!
Various flowers and trees
Gods country!
This is a beautiful natural area. Lots of trails. Great little walks and lovely spots for picnics! We had family photos done, but would also be fantastic for any photos or celebration! It’s seriously stunning!
Amazing collection of trees. Many I’ve never seen before. Lovely paths.
This was one of the coolest places to walk around. Dog friendly (leashed), clean and safe. Amazing Japanese garden, rose garden, winter garden. I can’t wait to return in warmer weather. The Veteran’s memorial is very nice. It’s very large but has well marked trails and maps.
A true gem of Portland. Stunning in the Autumn. Great for walking with toddlers, dogs, family. Lots of trails of all kinds.
Beautiful park. Really liked the sequoias. Off street parking available near the trailheads.
The sequoia are amazing. The paths are very accessible and we weren't smothered by crowds (mid may) we didn't go on many trails due to time constraints but enjoyed the walk to the train
Such and easy pace for a romantic morning walk. Was a hot day when we started but the shade and breeze kept it pleasant
Beautiful!! So many trails to go on. You can walk down to the rose gardens. Free shuttle that takes you around as well- to the zoo, Holocaust memorial and Vietnam veterans memorial
Just took a trip to Portland and this one of the highlights of my trip! If you haven’t been, GO. Go now. I would be a regular visitor if I lived in Portland. It’s peaceful and absolutely beautiful.
Gorgeous views and wonderful soaring trees. A must see!
Enjoyed the Redwood Trail. Other trails would definitely be highlights during certain times of the year.
What a delightful place! I had heard of Hoyt Arboretum, but didn't really understand what a treasure is in my own backyard. A mixture of paved and gravel trails leads you through native and non-native trees and vegetation.
Beautiful place to hike w/o hard to complete trails. Fun!
Must check out its hiking places I.e. the white pine trail. Lots of beautiful trees to enjoy and rare tree types i.e. Bosnian Pine!
There are so many beautiful trails to walk around at! Fun for all ages. It can get crowded on the weekend.
Beautiful arb with plenty of well maintained trails to explore. Crazy that a place like this is right next to the city.
So many plants to learn the names of while you hike.
Someone was getting married there, beautiful space
Beautiful place for a walk/easy hike. It’s free! Just make sure you grab a map from them beforehand so you don’t miss anything!
Always lovely to hike around, even in the pouring rain!
Stunning. Words won’t describe the soul filling peace you will find amongst these beauties. Clean, trails are well paved + marked, and the permanent residents of the woods are very welcoming. Close to zoo, Japanese and Chinese gardens. Must visit!
Love this place! Wonderful in all seasons. It's well organized with the various groupings, yet appears very natural and organic. Trails are well marked and maintained. It's a joy to visit - one of my absolute favorite places in Portland!
Great place to walk around and enjoy nature.
Great park for walking, photography, weddings, and has beauty to offer all year round.
A very beautiful and relaxing set of trails. Wonderful views, varied and complex shrubs, trees, flowers and other plants. The fall colors are breathtaking and the setting is peaceful. This is a must do for the nature lover's bucket list.
Wonderful arboretum. Very well laid out. Specially like the redwoods and the spruces. Benches on the paths to sit down and relax or meditate. Also saw some runners doing the trails.
SO beautiful. I still can't believe you only have to drive a few minutes from the city and you're essentially in the wilderness. We were in a rush to grab lunch and head to the airport but wanted to stop by, so we spent 30 minutes here and just walked around. There are trails and hikes and pathways and lounge spots for DAYS. So many options that can cater to the time you have a or the type of walk/hike you're looking for. Whether you're with family, kids, elderly, with your dog, on your own, its truly wonderful. We will be back!
We walked some of the trails for about an hour. Some trees and plants had identifying markers, so that was nice. Store at the visitors center was closed, restrooms were open.
So beautiful and relaxing. Can't wait to go back and explore more of it!
This is one of my favorite places to hike, with many small trails that overlap and are very beautiful in the variety of tree as well as elevation and path experience, making just about every trail fun and worth revisiting. It also has a grouping of trails allowing you to walk the circumference of the arboretum of about 5 miles which also goes around the rose garden and japanese garden. I come back here frequently, however the cost is the only thing holding me back from coming more as there is a small parking fee dependent on how long you stay, with the longest length of the full day being 8 dollars last time I checked, but about half of that for a couple hours.
Amazing Arboretum. Trails that you can explore for days. Well maintained. Extremely beautiful. My only regret was that I didn't have a week to spend just here.
Absolutely beautiful. Trees of every size and description dot the landscape. The trails traverse the hills and lead you through forests of grave, tall trees that occasionally burst open to a meadow or walk along a creek bed. Great place for wandering and contemplating what peace and joy is found in nature.
Parking in lots for fee. Pay with app. Some free street parking. Parking tends to fill up early. We found parking across from memorial. Lots of trails. Paved, gravel, and dirt surfaces. Well marked and partial maps posted. I suggest you get the free trail map and guide at visitor center. Benches and trash bins available along trails. Restrooms at visitor center but had lines waiting. Many plants have identification signs.
Wonderful hiking within Portland city limits
Would recommend the redwood trail, make sure to pick up the children's map for fun facts about the trees along the way!
One of my favorite walks in the Portland area.
Busy place on nice days and parking is limited but alway a nice walk in the trees!
Easy to park; beautiful, well maintained paths and walkways; views everywhere!!
Paved, beginner trails, but wonderful view points. Loved it so much we got married at their Redwood Deck.
Lots of trails highlighting different types of trees for each season
I've been a member or volunteer here off and on for going on 30 years. It's been interesting to watch it grow. It had a rough year, but it has a fantastic plant collection. It's not bloom heavy, but you get to see a lot of uncommon woody plants. Someday maybe it will have a conservatory as well. Definitely worth a visit for the plant geek in the area on vacation.
Really good and worth place to spend a day there and I really enjoyed all the places. Unfortunately Japanese garden is not open today. Remain everything so goooooood
One word: amazing! So beautiful and peaceful. Just go there and wander—you won’t regret it.
Easy pretty walks through the woods! The parking can be tough in the summer but it’s worth it to find a spot. Lots of meandering path. There is a nice view of Mt. Saint Helens!
Beautiful enchanted location. So breathtaking we held our wedding here. What's more extraordinary than marrying the love of your life? Your wedding, on Valentines Day amidst 10,000 trees!!!🥰 …
We love their tree time walks on mondays, plus this is where my husband and I had our first real date so it’s sentimental :)
Had my wedding here. Super easy to access and coordinate with Portland Parks and Rec
Beautiful trails and scenery. Loved learning the different trees! Saw a beautiful large owl.
Humongous space with many many trails to wander and lots of different types of trees in their own areas. Such a beautiful, well-maintained place.
Amazing
A phenomenal place to go! A huge arboretum with tons of hiking trails. I will definitely be back!
This place is huge with tons of walking trails. So many different trees and plants. Even though it is so dry it is still beautiful and serene. Visitor's center is great and the volunteer was super friendly.
Beautiful and peaceful plus incredibly well preserved. Great for kids and grownups alike.
I've visited Portland many times in last 30 years. This was my first time hiking through hoyt arboretum. It was so excellent. I wish I had visited during previous trips. We loved the conifer sections. Highly recommended.
This was a good place for enjoying nature and hiking close to downtown. The trails are well maintained. They are mostly hard packed earth. Much of it is very hilly. There's a nice variety of trees and many are labeled.
Loved this! Nice trails, so many beautiful trails. It's nice and quiet, definitely a place worth checking out
Such a beautiful drive. I only drove to the visitor center, which was closed. (Such a bummer) Everything in the surrounding areas was extremely pleasing on the eyes. Not to mention the wallet, beings that it's free. I really wanted to go to the bamboo garden but the sun wasn't on my side.
Great hiking trails. Not stroller friendly
Very beautiful and peaceful....crazy that you are still in the middle of a major city. All kinds of trails to walk or bike.
I'm sure this place is even better when the weather isnt trying to cook you alive. I wasn't able to explore much, but from what I saw, it was absolutely beautiful. The people at the visitor center were super cool. The amount of different plants here is impressive. The diversity makes every turn interesting.
Walking with Family on well marked trails. Beautiful Redwoods and a mansion at the end. Well worth it. Hiking with three adults and a five year old
Beautiful and so worth every second. Magnolia the size of umbrellas.
Such a lovley introduction to the flora and fauna of the area with plenty parking
Nice way to spend half a day. Its not spectacular - but a great spot to relax in the middle of the city
This is the best Arboretum in the PNW!! The 3 Tri-color European Beech are worth the short walk from where you park .. got to be the largest specimens on earth
Place is great for strollers depending on trail.
One of my all time favorite places to hang out with my friends and go on nature walks. There are several good trails that will take you all around Washington Park. Wildwood trail extends from Hoyt all the way 30 miles north into Forest Park and northwest Portland. The trails are named after trees that you will see on your hikes. I saw a deer, a raccoon, and some cool birds all on my last trip alone. I have been coming here throughout the two decades of my life. Very nostalgic.
I want to give this place 5 stars bc it's AMAZING. Dogwood, oak, holly, giant sequoia, coast redwoods, etc. It's beautiful and amazing. I'd give it 10 stars,b to be honest. The issue is that the signage does NOT reflect the trails and it's pretty easy to get lost. There are trails on the signs that don't exist on the maps and vice versa. They need to update their signs BADLY. Other than that, you really shouldn't have an issue finding a parking space, and it's beautiful and quiet with people who are either exercising, relaxing and enjoying nature or paying tribute to our fallen heroes of the Vietnam war. Great place.
Very lovely place to walk with the family. I love the variety of trees and plants and the birds really make it a lovely environment.
Lot of lush green hiking trails
Hoyt Arboretum is gorgeous. The trails are clearly marked. Lush, green hills provide ample space to leisurely stroll or take a rest while the kids climb trees. Did I mention it's free? The parking is only a couple of bucks and it's a couple bucks well spent.
This place is beautiful. It has over 6,000 trees and over 1,000 species. There are many hikes and walks combing through the area. Very kid friendly. I took my LO on a short walk to the redwood look out deck. Truly stunning group of redwoods and Sequoias. Despite it being winter it is very green and beautiful. Arrived early afternoon on a holiday weekday. Parking is scattered around the park, found parking relatively easily and close by a trial head. There are plenty of maps and trails are clearly marked. There are lots of people and lots of dogs around. There is also a visitor center with bathrooms. Visitor center was closed for the holiday. It has been raining but hike wasn't that muddy. Trails are very easy and not much elevation.
Beautiful place to explore! Hard to believe how close it is to downtown Portland, just a 20-30 mimute max ride away to get to 12 miles of beautiful trails!
Great walking trails. The paths were well marked.
Truly a worthwhile arboretum. Extensive paths, notable topography changes, and majestic trees. Great for fall foliage enjoyment.
Many trees labeled. Detailed trail markers help you navigate around. You could spend the entire day in this extensive park.
Beautiful urban hiking with many different trails to choose from. A good spot for bird watching and really great place to learn about different trees as most are labeled. Parking here can be a little difficult, but it's easy to park down by the rose garden and take the shuttle up.
Absolutely beautiful, like heaven on earth. Tons of different tree species make for a stunning series of hikes. I would recommend bringing a lunch with you and making an entire day of it. There's a nice picnic pavilion as well. This will be a go to for us each time we go back to Portland. Highly recommended.
Great place for some fresh air and great views. Watch out for forest trolls.
Awesome hiking for city access, lots of shade, great for families.
UPDATE: ZERO LEASH LAW here2022 , so I have been informed by the 72 (leashless) dog owners I encountered today who live locally. The signs up that State Leash Requirement are old and need to be removed, I guess. Very confusing to people who see dog owners with dogs on leash and most without, I guess it’s preferance!!
I guess RUNNERS have the right of way too, new law for 2022?
Interesting!
Hoyt Arboretum is a wonderful place to walk! The numerous trails are well marked and well maintained. The collection of plants is amazing and well organized. There is everything from redwoods to hawthornes to Japanese maples, Doug firs, bamboos and plants you never heard of! The informative signage is fascinating. There are many benches for resting and contemplation. In the fall, you can pile up leaves to jump into and in the spring there are lots of flowers. The Arboretum is large enough for solitude and the expansive views are a great inspiration. You can really breathe here!
Cannot praise this park enough. It has multiple trails, and each trail feels like a completely different park. It wasn't too crowded, and they have restrooms and good signing to differentiate the trails.
I don't have a bad thing to say. Lovely, well-kept trails, clearly marked; beautiful trees with labels; lots of birds to see and identify; great views and places to sit. Must-see in Portland, I think.
High quality family time. Smart, beautiful and fun. Portland is a garden!
A very serene place to take a walk through a variety of beautiful, wooded areas in the heart of Portland, Oregon. All of the trails are marked, and some sample trees along the way are given markers to identify their types or species.
This is a beautiful and peaceful spot! It offers a wonderful retreat away from the city without the need to actually leave the city!
Absolutely gorgeous park with lots of clearly marked walking trails of varying difficulty. It's my favorite place to get lost for a few hours. Be aware you must pay for parking, and it is frequently limited.
Loved the hike here. Tons of stuff to soak in from the tree species to the history of the local redwood. Staff at the visitor center were friendly and you have a number of hikes to pick from. Though some trails are close to the road you are tucked away in your own lush green pocket carved from the forest. If you enjoy trees and forest heavy hikes I think you'll like it here.
Sometimes only an arboretum will do
I hugged many a magnificent tree there
Fantastic way to spend your time if you enjoy being outdoors. You will see a high variety of plant life. You can do a long or short hike. The trails are well maintained and have excellent signage to guide you along the winding paths. If you are visiting Portland I would highly recommend that you spend at least a couple of hours here.

Awesome place! , Bring a mask , A lot of trails with beautiful Fall colors 🍁🍂You should go there 😊👍😆 …
Make sure you pick up a map at the visitor center so you can see the various hiking trails and different trees you can see. The visitor center is currently closed but they have maps available to grab outside. My favorite route is to park at the visitor center and take the Wildwood trail around Washington Park, past the archery range and the Japanese garden. To get back to the Visitor center take Winter Garden trail to Beech Trail. The map will show you. That stretch of the Wildwood trail is particularly stunning.
Beautiful walk even in the rain.
This is a beautiful way to spend a day. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Pretty much any of the paths you take is beautiful.
I definitely recommend you grab a map before you head on the trails. While there are trail markers, there aren't directions to get back to the parking lots.
It's also important to remember that there are about 200 acres of trees in the Hoyt Arboretum, so it's important to pick your route beforehand and park accordingly. It can be tough to find parking so I recommend you go early if possible, or take the metro up to the zoo and walk from there.
Amazing you can enjoy the nature and learn
Favorite place to walk and forest bathe in the city!
Great place to hike with kids.
Very nice walking paths in among various forest settings. We took the redwood trail. The trails markings are a bit confusing but you won’t get lost. Gorgeous place to unwind in the middle of the city. Easy to get there by transit. If you take transit to the Washington Park MAX station, you can catch the free shuttle at the zoo to here.
Relaxing and stunning...fantastic hiking and jogging trails
Fun! I love trails they are amazing! I saw like 4 slugs on this trail! This is a really fun place! Great for running down hills! Also very great climbing trees is that bad? If you don't want people climbing on them put a sighn that says that! Although this is a fun place! Very pretty! It's sooo calming I saw a bunny too! So much wildlife I love it!
Beautiful view of flowers and trees, and Mt hood!!
A relaxing, peaceful walk. There are trails that are easier for people who prefer a firmer footing but definitely take the Redwood Trail if you can handle a couple routes on the trail and see the deck. We went a couple hours before Sunset, the one hour loop took us about 30 minutes. The paths spider web and connect so you can always make your way quickly back to the entrance before the last shuttle runs around 7pm on weekdays. We've been to the Japanese garden and the Rose Garden on previous visits but decided not to disturb the beautiful peace of those locations with our very small children. A large forest with the road running through it seemed a better place for young kids to get out and run around and be noisy.
This Arboretum is massive and it's beautifully maintained with long trails through diverse groves of magnificent trees. The Redwoods are breathtaking. Free tea in the visitor center. It's very easy to get here taking the shuttle through the park. The suggested times for walking the roots are very conservative. I would say if you walk at a healthy Pace you can finish a root in half the time of what's listed.
Very pleasant spot to enjoy some trees...
I really enjoyed the Arboretum. Peaceful walk ways and it felt like you were hours from the city not just 10 minutes! Something to note is that we went on a Tuesday (midday) and the parking lot was full.
Very good natural area to enjoy, smell, watch, taste forest in Portland
The Washington park bus service really makes this and nearby attractions a must see if you come to Portland. So close to a max station too!
The visitor center has helpful people who can explain the structure of the trails for you.
There's really short trails, short trails and medium trails which don't have a ton of elevation. So good simple hikes for anyone who isn't up to full blown hiking. Make sure you go in summer to see the magnolias in bloom. The redwood trees are also a must see as they're several centuries old.
All the trails have clear markers and you won't ever get Lost.
Beautiful park inside the city of Portland. Features a dense network of trails. Limited parking spaces keep the number of visitors low so the trail are never overcrowded. There are no play structures do you can always expect to hear sounds of nature.
A visit to the Hoyt Arboretum is like a breath of fresh air in the city. There is even a grove of Redwood Trees to visit. The magnolias were in bloom and so beautiful. You can pick up a trail map from the gift shop/nature center and then wander to your heart's content. The trails are well marked and go through a variety of plant habitats. Hoyt Arboretum is one of my favorite places in Portland to connect with nature.
I love trees, and I loved the Arboretum. As you walk through different sections, you feel like you've moved through entirely different forests. Beautiful, peaceful place.
Wonderful arboretum with a lot of different trails and markers detailing the different trees and plants in the area. There are plenty of signs so that you don’t get nervous about getting lost. There are benches and pavilions to relax and sit at.
My boyfriend and I plan to go back and picnic in the pavilion or the wedding meadow.
*we had planned on hiking up to Pittock Mansion but that specific trail is currently closed off due to construction(?)*
We were here in December, so the trails were not usable, but it looks like it should be nice the rest of the year.
Hoyt Arboretum is beautiful year round, but especially beautiful in spring and summer when the weather is beautiful and the sun is out. It's arguably just as beautiful as the Japanese Garden nearby in its own way, but best of all it's free! There are so many different trails and each one is like a step into a different world. I love learning about the different trees in the park and seeing the amazing variety. Definitely one of the most beautiful and accessible little outdoor treasures in the Portland area.
I absolutely enjoyed the Arboretum. The trails are great and good for beginners! Highly recommend doing a picnic and enjoying a day of exploring.
This place is the best. I highly recommend checking out the cherry tree collection in early spring, and the magnolia exhibit in mid spring. The blooms are varied and wonderful. The area is quiet and secluded, and you can even make it here on public transit.
Beautiful tall trees. Good variety of trees and plants. We saw a bunny and squirrels the day we went. Nice spots to rest and take in the nature. It was quiet the day we went but might get crowded on weekends and school holidays.
Beautiful, just beautiful! A must visit if you're visiting Washington Park, other than the rose garden, which is also great. Multiple trails to choose from, and you can also hike all the way to Pittock Mansion, which I did, and I highly recommend doing. The redwood trees are younger and relatively smaller than the ones in California, so there's that. Great spot to picnic, hike, jog, exercise, and live! Lol
Hoyt Arboretum, like all of the Washington Park/Oregon Zoo area, is extraordinarily gorgeous. I grew up visiting this park, and even today, every time I visit I think how places like Central Park can hardly hold a candle to places like this. Wonderful place for walks and beautiful views of the city.
Such a beautiful and quiet place to take a walk. My dog also loved the adventure!
Many different trails with lots of signs so you won't get lost 10\10 would recommended from intermediate to expert there's Trails for everyone plenty of benches and a phenomenal gift shop got a super rad mushroom shirt and some stickers plus a rec area able to rent out for big parties
I never been there. My girlfriend just told me it's a place where they have trees. and she just said they have bushes also. Sounds really boring. I see trees all the time. I live in Pennsylvania. I don't see myself going there anytime soon. I guess if you like trees it's a good place to go. Or maybe you like bushes. If you like trees or bushes go there.
Fantastic beautiful trails. Easy to follow, new improved signage. Great park features like the Redwood Observation Deck. Refreshing forest respite without leaving the city!
If you are interested in trees this is the spot for you. Different hiking trails take you through different types of trees, most with markers describing each tree and plant. The land has hills and valleys so driving a chair through these can be challenging but not impossible.
Great walk through a beautiful forest
Excellent nature walk. Hicking paths are clear, scenery is lovely, and extensive. Access the hiking trails from multiple locations around Portland, including the Japanese Gardens, Rose Gardens, and Zoo (likely more). There is limited parking at the information center. Its free (aside from parking) which is always nice.
Beautiful hike through some beautiful I'll forest. There are over 200 acres of trees though so make sure you know the path you're trying to take so you do not end u pl lost. Lots of picnic areas along the way as well.
I live trees and hiking, so it's no surprise that I'd love this place. 12 miles of trails in mature beautiful trees, nestled in the heart of a major city? Yes please! I'm going to explore every single trail.
First time seeing redwoods. It was nice! The trails are also easy and very scenic.
Such a beautiful place to take a nature walk amongst all of the greenery. They have rhododendron, and dogwood flowering sections that are just marvelous in the spring. Can't wait to go again! And its fun learning what all of the plant names are. Helpful for gardening planning😆 …
Lovely trails and interesting selection of trees
Spent two hours standing outside in the cold taking pictures and we barely moved around. The view was breathtaking and although it was cold and we didn't get to see the rest of the Arboretum it was a good trip overall.
I do wish that they kept the path clear of snow as we slipped around quite a bit walking up
Amazing scenery and a vast variety of trees. Can't go wrong with any trail. Can literally walk for hours, enjoying the day with no risk of getting lost as the trails are well defined and laid out.
Beautiful! Well matked trails, amazing scenery!
Hoyt arboretum is one of Portland's natural wonders. Peaceful trails wend between a mind boggling array of trees. From the spring splendor of the magnolias to the stately evergreens to the austere beauty of the winter garden, there's something here for every lover of nature.
We loved hiking through and it was very well marked
This is my favorite go to place for a morning hike. There as many options for how long/intense you want to go for. Generally the closer you are to the parking lot the busier it is, also the easier the paths are to navigate. It is a very wide reaching park and you can at one point cross burnside to make the intense switchback hike to the Pittock Mansion if you are so inclined. Many of the trees are labeled and bikes are prohibited so you will find walkers/hikers, and lots of dog walkers.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. There is so much to do and see here, and it's unlike any park or Arboretum you've ever seen! It has direct access to the Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, Children's museum, and has the largest collection of conifers on the planet. I also participate in the Arborists in the Arboretum event annually and I get to climb/preserve some of the largest trees!!
One of my favorite places in Portland! Very accessible trails winding through beautiful stands of trees and meadows. You can drive to the visitor center or get on the wildwood trail by the Rose Garden.
Wonderful marked paths and notable stopping points around beautiful and unique imported trees. My personal favorite are the not too uncommon holly bushes. I’ve collected a few fallen drying leaves to press for future art project. Some trails are more fun/ longer with a view, and more woodsy which are reminiscent of the pnw rainforest vibe. Parking has been easy, pay to park at low cost for ample time. Some tree signage missing here and there. Pokestops and smaller hiking loops available to those looking for less of a day trip. Also nearby are the outdoor archery range, full rose garden, aesthetically landscaped Japanese memorial garden, and large children’s playground and tennis courts.
Great hikes with great views based on the season you go and path you take!
Such a lovely place to visit! I enjoyed learning about the different trees! it's a really nice hike/ walk! The people at the visitor center were very nice too!
The trees and trails here are beautiful and educational. The redwood trail, fir trail, spruce trail, and bristlecone pine trail were scenic and easy hikes with a few clearings that allowed a bit of sun to shine through.
best place to go for a walk in the woods without having to travel too far! there are learning opportunities along with a beautiful grove of redwood trees. This park is beautiful year round.
Hoyt Arboretum was a perfect place to have our outdoor wedding. The Red Wood Deck was a great spot for our first look pictures and the Stevens Pavillon was just the right size for our small, intimate wedding.
Love the trails criss-crossing this part of Washington Park. The combination of so many trails and different seasons means the scenery is ever-changing. The redwood deck is everyone's favorite, but I also like the magnolia trail and the holly grove.
Fantastic quick getaway from the city to walk among trees and breathe cleaner air. Its also a great place to find hidden benches where to find some peace and read or imagine magical beings curiously looking at you from the branches high above.
Great collection of plants. The bamboo gardens need a little attention. Let me know if someone needs help.
A very good place to go on a hike or just a simple walk.
I just really love hiking and trees - this place has a lot of both!
I can't honestly say it was good because we showed up at dark. It's open until 10. In either end of day light saving, that's dark. None of it's lit.
Maybe I'm expecting too much because of the work it requires to run power through the park but maybe I'm not because they say it's open.
Come to our park to look at the trees without the benefit of light.
It just seems odd.
Beautiful setting - many different sections with redwoods, firs, rhododendrons etc. Extremely well market trails and many options from easy to moderate hiking. You can extend hike to the Zoo/Max or Pittock Mantion. Highly recommended. Grab a map at visitors center.
Several species of trees scattered around a very peaceful hike. Be sure to visit the redwoods if you're in the area. Not nearly as big as the ones you'll find in northern California but still beautiful.
Love the trails. They are all very well maintained and marked. Perfect to go with kids. Our jogging stroller did ok on the trails.
Beautiful place and a pleasure to walk
Through. The first time you stand next to a Redwood is a reality check. When you see close up and personal the
Enormous value these trees hold you must understand why we need to keep
Them. Thanks to Hoyt Arboretum
For helping us preserve these National
Treasures.
Fun to walk around and the multiple trails gives you many options. Good place to bring kiddos. Well maintained trails and occasional benches line the paths. I really enjoyed the Veteran's Memorial.
a beautiful place to be at one with nature and enjoy many varieties of trees. It is a lovely hike with plenty of convenient trails for those who can only walk a little bit.
Quiet trails for communing with trees. On a clear day, like the one we went on, great views of Mount Adams, Mt St Helena and Mt Hood!
Lots of dogs and lots of people. Beautiful park! Saw some dogs who weren't so friendly so I wouldn't bring a dog reactive or scared dog here. Parking can be crazy per usual of the area. Dog poop every where though, bring poop bags!
I love walking my dog here. The trails are well maintained and the maps are detailed so I never get lost. The redwood deck is stunning.
Loved walking through the woods and sing the variety of plants and flowers. Absolutely gorgeous
Beautiful place with tons of options for trails! Many trails cross cross, but that's the beauty of this place. Definitely take a look at the map to get an idea of the trails before starting out.
Absolutely one of the Best of Portland places. The fall colors this year were great even early November. Great walking paths and trails.
Great place with a lot of trails to choose from. It's easy to do a shorter walk or longer hike if you are willing to jump on the different trail loops.
So lucky to have such a beautiful place in Portland!
What a beautiful place to walk throught the woods, a beautiful flower garden, the mansion to tour, really good hiking trails through the tall trees. Easy to light moderate trails, a little ups and downs but nothing too drastic
Absolutely stunning! 10/10, highly recommended
It was my first trip. I will definitely go back for fall colors. There's an 🏹 🎯 I walked up too, fun surprise. …
BEAUTIFUL. Hiking, scenery, quiet, and serene
Well-kept educational trails make this place feel like an escape to the wilderness while being in the middle of the city. Parking can be a bit tight but weekdays are a quieter time to visit.
There are really well maintained trails here, clearly marked with distance and time estimate. Could do it with a cane if needed, but probably not a walker.
Super super cool. Great place to hike and appreciate Portland and its beauty. Must go if you're in the area and have never experienced it. 🌲🍁🌲🌳 …
Amazing. Great trails. I saw a bird
I was here for a wedding in October, and it was quite beautiful. It has rained the day before, but was clear the day off the wedding. With the sunlight filtering through the trees it was wonderfully picturesque.
In the middle of washington park, beautiful varieties of redwood and Sequoia trees. They are truly impressive. Lots of paths to hike around and explore.
What a wonderful place to be! The trees are amazing and the trails are very well maintained. I can’t wait to go back and see more.
I love Hoyt! Lots of trails from easy to a little tougher. Great for all ages and educational as well as a good place to hike around for fun.
Great area and fantastic views!
Very tranquil setting throughout the park. The history includes Bei g named the Poor Farm where homeless people helped farm the land for their keep (room and board). Facinnating place with many different trees and vegetation.
Beautiful place to hike
This place is good, but we are in Oregon, and this place can’t compete with more wild parks around Portland.
It’s just my opinion, but if you are like me and prefer wilderness, I’m not recommend you to go to Hoyt arboretum.
Loved it here. I would have rather my trip to Portland a 3 out of 5 but this beautiful stretch of nature tipped my trip into a five . Anyone going to Portland should make this place a high priority visit.
Great trails for hiking/walking
and a wonderful variety of trees, plants and flowers.
Walked my dog up here after failing to find a way to witchs castle pretty awesome variety of trees and shrubs. Favorites are the Madrones
Great walking trails, park is so well cared for, love all the signs telling you about which trees are which. Super handy.
Part of the greater Washington Park. Shuttle will take you there quickly. Lots of trails with many labled Flora. Close to the Vietnam Memorial which is thoughtfully and effectively laid out.
Fabulous trees, lovely pieces of information as you walk, and a relaxing atmosphere. Close to other lovely places to go - the zoo, the Japanese garden, and Pittock mansion. Definitely a must see.
Absolutely beautiful. The hiking here is awesome and the trails are really well marked! Lots of options no matter your skill level.
Really nice during covid to just enjoy some trees. If you live in the city, parking is 2 bucks for an hour, and it's worth checking out
Amazing trails for exploring, hiking, or trail running. A wonderful experience year round. A true gem of Portland.
Always something to see, even on a cloudy wet day. A good phone camera (or better) should come with!
My favorite part of Washington Park. Beautiful, diverse trees; particularly wonderful when flowering. Less crowded and more secluded (also more hilly) than the rest of the park that I've seen.
Hoyt Arboretum is so beautiful in the Autumn
Go learn about trees and stop reading reviews.
Very peaceful, meandering trails throughout the trees with numerous trail markers and placards with details about the trees and plants. Free and paid parking available plus a small visitors center for more info.
Love all the green spaces around Portland. This is just above the Washington park area. They even have a free shuttle.
Beautiful scenery wonderful place to walk through
The trails go by much quicker than posted. We did the "30min loop" in about 10 minutes. Beautiful and plenty of trails to explore,.
Awesome place to visit. The free shuttle is a must, don't try to walk this park it's huge. Plan on at least 4 hours and there's still more of you can keep walking.
A must go when you are in Portland.
Beautiful, scenic trails! Dog-friendly, which was great for us.
Really quiet and beautiful!
Finally got to check out the bamboo grove! It was so lovely and peaceful. And not too far from the parking lot and visitor center.
Awesome! I really enjoy my walk in here
The park is beautiful for an afternoon walk in rain, snow or beautiful sunny Sky weather. Unfortunately on August 31st I slipped on loose gravel and fractured my upper arm which is still not functional. I was taken to the emergency room and my car was left in the parking lot paid up for a full day but seeing as I couldn't drive I had to leave the car until my emergency room visit was completed and my companion was available to remove my car. In the meantime the city slack me with a $44 parking fee even though my car was removed one to two hours after my full day payment lapsed. As far as I could tell there is no way to get a refund with the injury I have in a timely fashion as my repair will take months. I don't really have anyone willing to present for hours to argue for that $44 and there's no one that can take a phone call. I slipped on loose gravel which was like landing on marbles or ball bearings. The whole thing seems a little unfair and I've been out of work the entire time.
Lots of trails that interconnect with other attractions in Washington Park. Staff is friendly and lovely reading area. No loan of the books, though.
Very nice park with many trails!
So many trees, so little time. A nice place to take a stroll with someone new to town, it’s walking distance from the zoo’s max station and even has a shuttle bus I believe that takes you through it.
Great place for running, but it's pretty packed on the weekends so maybe try one of the other local trails in that case.
Beautiful!!! I love coming here for my long walks. I always find a path with no people. It's so much better without people. I could spend days out here.
nice but to much walking. do it with car
Freaking beautiful! The forest walk my soul needed on this vacation.
Showing my daughter the Hoty Arboretum and Redwood platform.
This a great place to hike that is close to the city.
So many trees! So many trails! Plenty of picnic tables! Places to park. What else do you need?
Fantastic magical place. We were in Portland for 4 days and we went twice. The rose garden is beautiful. Dont miss it if you are in Portland!
I omly lived in Beaverton for a year, but in that time, I would spend every Friday morning walking around Hoyt. Absolutely the most beautiful and relaxing place. I miss it dearly. ♡
This is my second favorite place in the world.
Visit the magniloia and cherry trees in spring the maple and Sherry trees in the fall, and everywhere else all year! I won't tell you my secret for parking though.
Beautiful and accessible. Parking can be tight sometimes (really a minor inconvenience compared to the experience). At admin center, Staff knowledgeable and helpful. Good place for nature books. Don’t miss it. but
September great time of year to go. Good trails. Nice place to get away from the city without having to go far.
Don't worry, it's smaller than you think and all the trails are marked and loop around the park. You can't help but find your way and traffic is surprisingly light on a weekday.
Beautiful place with varied landscapes. As an arborist, I love the variety of trees and care for them. Also I got engaged here. That could possibly cause me to be biased.
Lovely walking paths though well documented trees and shrubs. The visitors center has restrooms and helpful staff
Clean. Peaceful. Let's hope we can get another year or two before homeless sets up camp.
Great casual hike location
Super fun place to walk around. Pretty easy walking on the trails, lots of places to set up a hammock!
Great hike with the family.
One of the favorite parks in Portland
Washington Park, overall, is a beautiful place to visit, and great for hiking!
I love the arboretum! Undergrowth is predominantly native, but they have trees from all over. Bathrooms & maps available at the visitors center.
This is an awesome place to relax and take in nature. It’s so beautiful, especially in the Fall.
Breathtaking fall colors!
Great for beginners. Got lost - the trail posts are confusing - but found our way back just fine.
So many trails and so much beauty. Who knew there could be so many shades of green on a single tree?? Gorgeous. 😍 …
Great visitor center, free weekend tours, 12 miles of well-maintained trails, expansive display of trees from all over the world.
Even trail tread is great for running. The network of trails offers a lot of opportunities to explore the arboretum.
Amazing walking trails, be ready for a workout. If you want an adventure, park at the arboretum and walk down to Washington Park.
Lots of wooded trails, some quite steep, others fairly level. Fall foliage is at its peak right now.
One of my favorite hiking trails in Portland, Oregon
Premier "tree museum" in the region. Several miles of hiking trails, free weekend tours (donations requested), and a small but well stocked visitor center.
If you like trees or hiking this spot is great year round
You could come here every day for a year and not run out of trails to take. What a magical place! I just wish I could have spent more time here.
Great place to get away in Portland!!! A DEFINITE MUST SEE!!!!
Awesome area for hiking & forest bathing with many connecting trails.
Excellent place for hikes, long or short.
Beautiful arboretum, highly recommend checking out the redwoods!! Would definitely come back again
Amazing! Lots of good trails and trees from different places. Right next to a forestry museum and the zoo too.
The trails here are great and it's a beautiful place to take a hike rain or shine.
My favorite place to quickly just get away for an hour or two.
It was clear and warm day. Trail very good, little traffic. People greeted were friendly enjoyed the trip.
Well maintained and not as busy as the rest of the park.. Red wood section is a must see.
I love to go here at the hoyt arbortum because
You get to on hikes. Also of you play pokemon go you can get cool animals. I love this place.
You sould come here whenever you want to.
Love this place! Great for a good hike, or just a peaceful walk.
Wonderful natural habitat near the city
A true PNW gem, plain and simple. A first hand experience will truly show you what I mean - I will absolutely be going here frequently. And it's very accessible!
Spring begins. Magnolia time and damp budding all over...
Excellent gardens and tree collection. 12 miles of trails. Worth a visit and free.
Beautiful park with amazing trails that show the beauty of the trees.
Wonderful variety of trees.
Awesome, very beautiful place. All types of hikes for the family and experienced hikers
Peaceful Path To Heaven
Trails were nice and clean. People were courteous and mindful of mask and distancing.
I like tree which it also has markers to help learn different species
great nature. different kinds of trees.
Beautiful park and rose garden; but bad parking system. Paid the machine and still got a ticket. Prospect of fighting over a ticket really takes away from the good part of the park experience.
With seemingly unlimited trails, and rich education opportunities about many species of trees, I enjoy walking here almost every day with my dog!
Such a great free experience! It feels like you must be hours away from the city but instead it's right by Portland!
Lots of hiking trails and very well maintained. We especially like the kids routes.
Identify lots of trees while you walk the trail! They have a map that shows you what the tree groups are! Fun way to get lost for an hour.
I shot a bunch of mess and curl to your parking lot at 3 in the morning I had an amazing time and the wild life was beautiful definitely going to come back again soon)
Very cool. Walking paths can be quite steep so you probably want sturdy footwear. Scenic overlook.
I guess it was the wrong time of the year......but I just wasnt too impressed.
