Reviews of Fairmount Water Works
It seems only fitting that inside the City of Love sits one of the most unique and fantastic wedding venues. A bit like something out of a fairytale, and once praised for its “pleasant design” by Charles Dickens, the Water Works is a National Historic Landmark that offers couples the choice of several amazing sites within the venue to bring the vision for their wedding to life. Neoclassical architecture sets an ethereal tone, and its design is a romantic pairing of nature and modern technology.
The Engine House is a slice of historical elegance in classic Philadelphia style. The hardwood floor stretches out beneath its original crystal chandelier while simple details warm the room making it ideal to host an indoor ceremony. Complete with a tented Veranda for hosting the cocktail hour that overlooks the river, friends, and family can enjoy the breathtaking view of Boathouse Row and the Center City skyline. The Engine House features chef-attended interactive stations, a raw bar, a food library, and a full-service bar. The ballroom can also host a cocktail hour.
Couples who wish to have an outdoor ceremony can choose between the Grand Pavilion or the Gazebo. Standing over the Schuylkill River in grand, Neoclassic style with columns framing the space, the Grand Pavilion is a picturesque setting to say “I do.” A columned walkway leads out to the Gazebo off of the Mill House Deck. Surrounded by meticulously kept grounds and eye-catching architecture, the vintage Gazebo is classic and sophisticated.
This historic water works has very nice architecture. We walked down from the back of the art museum through a historic trail/walkway down to the river side. Unfortunately since we went on a Sunday and we couldn't see the exhibits. There is a couple of event venues there. And you can walk out to see the dam and people fishing there.
Went here for a wedding and I have to say it was the nicest place I've been too. Highly recommend it here. Everything was exceptional.
Highly recommend a visit to their 2022 installation: Pool- A History of Segregation. Admission is free/donation to this immersive, multimedia exhibit. It traces centuries of racism in granting access to public pools. But it also celebrates stories of athletes and residents who challenged segregation. Outside the Water Works, there is a riverside trail with a historic tribute to early businesses and indigenous peoples. There is a free parking lot with 2-hour parking, if you're lucky. If it's full, you can find free parking up the road at Fairmount Park. This walk is dog-friendly, but there is a flight of stone stairs to head down and the trail ends by the bridge with a turnaround.
A lovely place to visit for a nice walk and fresh air. One of my favorite low cost activities to do with my daughter. Grab a tangerine water ice and pizza pretzel from Kings water ice close by, then go feed the ducks and geese by the Schuylkill river. This beautiful and historic place was definitely a quarantine fatigue life saver!
Excellent service and venue! We really enjoyed an amazing evening.
And all my time living in Philadelphia I never knew about this place and I learned a great deal about the processes that took place to get clean water in Philadelphia in the early 1800s it's amazing what happens in up until now to make sure that we have clean water and for it to get from point A to point b we take a lot of things for granted and learning about this made me really think about every time I turn my waterfall sit on where it came from before it hit my sink.
Great experience, very educational.
Nice place to take the family. The museum is free and has a lot of information about the water and the river to be more specific. We went on a hot day and the air was ice cold and the area outside was nice with many trees. Will come again.
Beautiful scenery. The Water Works is a great picture spot and revives the classical architecture of American ideas of cities of the future. The Water Works museum is informative and insightful in different aspects as the history of the water works, its role in Philadelphia, the architecture, old and new water treatment. You learn history, science, biology of the area, and hydraulics engineering.
I stopped by without knowing it was a learning experience but it was great. Definitely recommend.
This is a hidden gem. Guess, not many people know about this place. was very interesting to know about how the water needs were met in the past and in the current day. Lots of exhibits to keep the kids entertained and wanting to know more. As a result of visiting this place, we in the household have certainly become conscious when wasting water (when brushing or washing things) and have reduced our wastage.
Beautiful visit along the river with very interesting architecture. Nice gardens surrounding the area, right below the museum of art.
We attended a lovely Friday night wedding here. The valet service was on point including umbrellas as soon as stepping out of the car. The champagne pre ceremony was divine. The ceremony took place with a beautiful river view and gorgeous columns draped elegantly. The food is non-stop and for the most part delicious. The servers were attentive. The layout under the tent was very nicely planned. The lighting is top notch. The trailer bathrooms are clean and very classy. The venue is a very choice for a wedding. The views are exquisite. A top pick to hold the nuptials in Philadelphia.
Awesome place for a wedding and that's exactly why I was there. Beautiful venue, with fabulous views.
It's been a few years since I've been here. This time, it felt safe. The only thing they need to do is clean up the trash dump at the bottom of the stairs. That was nasty.
Here for an evening cocktail party, very nice venue, we fortunately had picture perfect weather. Off the Schuylkill River and next to boathouse Row, parking is easy and the views spectacular.
The venue is right on the schuylkill river with beautiful views of boathouse row. They have a great outdoor area plus limited indoor areas for hosting events.
Love walking around and seeing the sunset or the sunrise. Either way between all the activities and the free tour of the great water works museum you cannot go wrong.
One of the most interesting and under-appreciated sites in downtown Philly. Details are found online, but this stop is interesting for the visible architecture and buildings as well as historical significance and the interpretive center down below. Take an hour or two out of your trip and visit this piece of history. It's an easy walk from the Museum of Art and 2 hour free parking is very close.
Why would they need to build such a short dam on the Schuylkill river? You'll find out if you visit - the answer is ingenious!
Beautiful area, but our rivers are gross and kind of changes the mood. Beautiful venue but I wouldn’t have my wedding there because of how gross we have allowed our water to become.
I don’t know what the city of Philadelphia is doing with their marketing budget, but this is the most amazing thing I’ve seen in the whole city. Powerful story, riveting exhibits, and delightful staff. A must see.
Nice park and recreation area. Some problems with parking at weekend but positive energy will be with you after that so many days.
It really dope for photographers and videographers to get great sunset shots and special occasion photos!
Enjoyed this tour. Great history about water usage and how the Schuylkill is and was an important water source for Philadelphia. Nice work being done to bring back Mussels. During our tour we learned of how important the Mussel is to creating naturally clean water.
Great place to take the family, take a wide variety of photos and just get away from the city. From bike trails to walkways, is just an overall great spot to catch the sunset and get close with nature.
a great place to walk, relax, hang out, enjoy nature and be in peace.
Great place for a stroll or to Run, you can see birds and beautiful flowers along the trail
Was there for a wedding and it was absolutely beautiful!!!! The flowers, the food, the venue...were amazing.
Free. Fun. Informative. Learn about that most precious of commodities: water. How did the city harness its power and hydrate it's citizens? Find out here.
Love it here been coming to the park /museum for years way before they made they're renovation.. we took afew pictures by the wooder work. Went up to the Gazebo hung awile took more pictures. Walked the path looked into the water held hands with the wifey . The parks clean the water works had plenty parking everything's neat fresh and organized. Lots todo around here jog run picnic play eat even drink during the summer months they have the beer lodge outside as I call it. Ppl skate ride bike amd some come to take pics with the rocky statue. All type of fun in the sun around here. I've even seen ppl fishing before.
Beautiful place to come visit after the wedding party or gathering.
All in all one of the best places to come unwind relax and enjoy the day.
Lots of running space for the kids to walk ur dog even run ur drone or RC vehicles.
LOVE IT HERE.
The waterworks functioned as a water pump to a reservoir which is now the site of the Philadelphia art museum. Currently the site hosts a small free museum which is worth a stop. The site once hosted an Aquarium, recreation center, pool. The buildings upstairs host(ed) a restaurant and is highly sought out for weddings and other events.
Very nice outting quite place to relax romantic place
It was a beautiful place to walk through..peaceful and serene❤
Was here as a guest on a chilly spring evening. We were all comfortable and warm. Vince and his staff were amazing. The location is nice, but the staff are even better.
Amazing views and lots of hidden trails to walk.
Dang if I didn't forget to take pictures. It was a perfect day for taking a walk with some of my family. There weren't a whole lot of people, but that never bothered me anyway. We walked around, not in the water works itself this time.
What an amazing experience! Fantastic museum gallery for both kids and adults.
Beautiful place to spend memorable times with your loved one. Great for a walk, hang out, photography, watch the sunsets, etc. Enjoy a relax day. It has a good parking lot. Though it gets full often. This is city, nature & history all in one you’ll enjoy.
This is a neat location with beautiful views overlooking the Schuylkill River.
Fantastic venue. The scenery is incredible. Attended a wedding and I can say I'm impressed and not surprised that the bride chose this place. A gem in Philadelphia!!
I had the privelage of being a guest at this venue for a wedding. To put it simply, the combination of great history, a fantastic location, and an awesome crew made for a priceless experience! The crew (I won't call them staff, because every person on the team went the extra mile for 6+ hours) that runs this joint is top notch. If you want to throw an off the chain party, look no further!
This is an amazing part of Philadelphia history I didn't know existed. My grandsons had an amazing time exploring the area. I was able to share one of my childhood memories with them by showing them how to get and taste the nectar of a honeysuckle flower. The people who work there are very informative. We will be visiting this location and area frequently from now on, as well as the multitude of other Philadelphia treasures they opened my eyes to.
The current Pool exhibit is AMAZING - so informative about the history of segregation at pools in Philly and nationwide from WWII to present. Must see for anyone concerned about equality and access for all.
Enjoyed an interactive professional development on Education for Sustainability.
It is incredible that history like that is still alive and busy. Plenty of people around enjoying the beautiful view.
A busy, multi-use path (20+ miles) runs through this area. In addition to being right downtown on the Schuylkill River, there are a lot of sculptures due to its proximity to the Philadelphia Museum of Arts. The “Rocky” steps are here. The George Washington Fountain is about .25 miles away. This entire area has a lot of touristy, stuff. The historical stuff is more, down towards the Delaware River.
Enjoyed the "POOL" exhibition in regards to black history. It should be a standing exhibition not just temporary.
I love it here. It's a great place to walk or run. A good amount of people also ting young kids to feed the geese and whatnot. Its always a nice scenic place to go to for free when you're looking for something to do.
Beautiful. Attended a wedding there and location was perfect.
Absolutely gorgeous place for a wedding.
My wife and I were strolling along the banks of the Schuylkill and had to stop in and admire the beautiful architecture of the Water Works. Our visit inside the interpretive center was informative and very nice. It was a good break from a fairly chilly walk on a nice winter day and we definitely enjoyed the scenery along the banks at this classic structure.
Parks on tap is currently based here. Must be 21+ to enter. They do a good job on enforcing mask use and keeping seating areas far enough from each other.
The only have one available food vendor which also provided alcohol. With every drink purchase you must make a food purchase.
Would be great if this location offered more food truck options.
To my scintillating surprise, i was able to find a parking spot fairly close to the museum.
There were ample benches, but my friend and i unraveled a blanket in the shade of an ensconced Fairmont tree. For a brief fall afternoon, all was as perfect as could be.
I used to come here as a child all the time. It's one of those places that I think every Philadelphian should visit just for the intrigue! It's informative and it's here! Check it out, I always loved going!
Very nice outdoor space. Vendors, food & drink. Water views and room to bike, hike, run and walk. Family friendly fun and of course you have the museum within walking distance as well. Definitely worth a visit!!!
They have so many hands on exhibits for kids which adults will love as well. Such a beautiful view and area. They do have an elevator, but it’s even more obscure than their main doors. (Further south of main doors)
If you can find a parking spot it's a nice place to visit. Especially if you want to fish below the dam. But a lot of snags in the water. Maybe someday they will clean up the junk on the bottom just below the dam. All kind of fish ! Some very, very big catfish !
5 Star wedding venue. Fantastic views. Multiple buildings and a massive tent and a large gazebo on the river. Gourmet foods. You can even design a lighting scheme for Boat House Row. You have to book your wedding way in advance
we had a wedding. venue was beautiful and staff so nice and helpful
Beautiful wedding venue
A nice place to learn about the water works the building is clean cool they have a bathroom and water
Beautiful Place!! As Always! Best Atmosphere! Great Fishing!!!
As a historical landmark, this place is definitely amazing. It combines classical, aesthetically-pleasing architecture with engineering prowess and function. This place is simultaneously the first system in America for treating and distributing a public water supply (it used to be pumped from here to where City Hall is now) as well as the site of a former aquarium! It now hosts private events (my own upcoming wedding) and is the home of an interactive, educational center known as the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center. Great spot for photos, getting good views of the river and its dam plus Boathouse Row, or just hanging out.
View is excellent, locals and tourists are in abundance, fishing is 24 hours, must have a license, free parking options, rocky statue, miniature Abraham Lincoln statue, wedding hall, and large lawn and path. Down the staircase there is many shaded areas, and tons of fun facts and history to see there
My daughter fell in love with this place for her wedding the first time she saw it. But nothing compared to the actual event
..the food, ambience, service....words can't adequately describe. You guys gave my daughter the wedding of her dreams! I am beyond pleased!!! Thank you!!
Interesting and nice setting. Best to arrange a group visit to get a tour from the staff. My family was in and out in 30 minutes. Nobody was there to start the movie for my family, but the school groups appeared yo be having a great time.
Beautiful historic building and breathtaking scenery! Drop by the Interpretive Center (free admission) to learn more about the much-touted former pumping station that supplied water from the Schuylkill River to the city for much of the 1800s. The presentation is informative and entertaining for both kids and adults. Some of the original facilities on display, such as a turbine from 1851, are really neat.
Drinking from the water fountain was another neat experience, especially after we learned from an exhibit that the water comes directly from the Schuylkill River. It did assure visitors that the water has been cleaned and is perfectly potable (it is!).
I go hear almost every evening to watch the sunsets. But, did you know that there is a museum inside? And that they support water conservation? Dig deeper my friends. Check out their program and tour the Water Works. They also rent out for events such as weddings and graduations. Must see place and amazing to hang out on a Summer's Eve.
Great location, especially in the evening. Good food. Professional and helpful management and servers. Excellent venue to hold an affair!
Such a beautiful walk.
MOST BEAUTIFUL place I've visited in Philly!
Hands down one of the coolest historical sights I've been to. Learning the history of Philadelphia and water management was a blast. Also, the interactive sand pit is dangerously addicting. You must visit if only to play with that!
Attended Beer in the Park...nothing super fantastic about the free beer area concessions but there was a wedding nearby so it was fun being an observer. Parking lot area was a little sketchy at night.
We had a holiday party here and it was a fairly unique event space. The food was excellent, the decor was modern and interesting--but it definitely would have benefited from more seating.
Was a cold day when we went. Tour would have been much better to enjoy outside during warmer months. Inside was ok. Not the most exciting place. Went with my son's school.
If you want to enjoy a good day with family, this place is a must, beautiful views, great to walk and jog, awesome 👍🏽 …
Really nice venue for a wedding reception. Overlooks Boat House Row and when they're lit up, it's extra special.
The museum is very enjoyable, especially if you have children. It is nice to learn about a small but vital part of the history of this city. Plus the views outside are very nice.
Beautiful day for a wedding..
Just for the record they no longer have brunches or are a restaurant . Events only!!!
The Water works area is beautiful....water, earth air and sunshine excellent backdrop for any Kangoo Bounce Class Burn with Vern, photo shoot, meeting area just a unique piece of Philadelphia because guess what? Good things happen in Philadelphia too! 😜😘☺ …
Went for a wedding. Beautiful setting. Great hot dourves and yummy filet for dessert. Only negative was that the room was too small for 100+ guests. 80 would be good.
Great place for Everyone. No exceptions ages
Rented a CityBike to ride along the Schuylkill River Trail and hands down this was a perfect stop along the way. There's a little viewing platform to see the waterfalls and the entire surroundings are just amazing. Worth the bike ride 100%.
Just walk..through.. wow how time has changed this city water..values..I remember..all the springs..and places. One could Sip fresh spring water.. such an idea for everyone's wellbeing.. ecological miracle..drink from pouring..sweet water..live love cherish Our beloved city...Water..brotherly love..bring it back..you Dig..
Great building to learn about the history of Philadelphia Waterworks. They have detailed, well-maintained displays. Many displays are interactive and the short film is very informative. We visited the mussle room and one of the staff allowed us to enter their lab area to see how they are dissected. Super interesting and the kids learned so much! Takes about an hour to walk/read through it all.
Historic Phila land. Go sit on the grass. Breath it in. Two different gazebo's overlooking all kinds of beauty. Hike up to the art museum. One of my favorite locations on the drives. Sunset is crazy here.. right at the falls.
Came here for my bros wedding and fell in love like it was my wedding food, drinks and service made this event even better
Quieter location in the city ...when visited at night has a great view of Phillies iconic lighted Boathouse Row and the Waterworks special events buildings (were there was a wedding when we visited). One can even walk down closer to the water and sit on benches. Adjacent to Philadelphia art museum where there are the famous Rocky steps.
I highly recommend this place! The schuykill is beatiful anytime of the year. There is a great view of the falls and boat house row. The history is facinating. If your any where in the philadelphia area this place should be on your bucket list
For a small place there is a wealth of educational exhibits. It's neat to visit when the river is high because it looks like it's ready to flood into the exhibit space.
Some good exhibits, could certainly see a primary school class being engaged with a lot of the hands on experiences. Probably would be worth about 20 minutes that would be valuable learning time. Free admission.
Such a beautiful place to take pictures, relax and explore. I love everything about this place..So beautiful..I have to come on my own and explore more some other day.
Ample space for social distancing, some chairs, hammocks, and tables provided. To purchase alcohol you must also buy a food item every time, fyi
Wonderful venue way over the top definitely and 11 out of 10. Keep up the great work.
Fabulous venue for a lavish, memorable event. The food was superb, the setting was sublime!
Great spot for Philly parks on tap. Not stomping on any former public schools, but out in the open in a great shared public space.
So beautiful and tranquil. Nice breeze tonight. Attending a wedding. Awesome regardless of the current climate. Having a ball.
Surrounded by history and a great learning experience, and next to schuylkill banks walking trail 👍
Cool spot for walking, sightseeing, or just people watching. Parking lots get crowded on weekends. Just be patient.
Lovely spot. Not easy to reach on public transport but great by car or bike!
Family member had a beautiful wedding reception there!
Beautiful place to go visit, take pictures, and a good starting point to explore Philadelphia. Especially if you're in to macro photography.
Amazing museum! So many interactive things for children to do. The staff was friendly and helpful. And it's FREE admission.
Me & My Fiance goes here often to relax....its a nice calm place for me & him to have some us time, I will forever love it here💯🙌🏾❤🎯 …
Awesome Facility, Staff & Service!!! They treated my family and friends like royalty. I hope you can guess by now that I am the Father of the Bride!
Beautiful place for a casual walk and take lots of pictures. Love the history of Philadelphia. You have to try it at least once!
being able to explore the first water treatment center is a great experience. being part of the community reading program takes our free family visit to another level of understanding about our life habits and life around us!! #FairmountWaterWorksRead #ManderPlaygrond #FamilyExposureIsKey
Was here for a wedding and all I can say is the this venue was amazing.
Very well run. Top notch staff, super food service. One top notch venue to hold a wedding reception!
Had the pulled pork sandwich with a beer. Very tasty sandwich and the beer was cold and refreshing. Nice time spent with my family.
It used to be a nice place to take a date but now it's just got homeless guys
Very nice views at night!
Beautiful venue for a wedding! Kind staff and delicious food!
Nice scenery peaceful and friendly ppl definitely somewhere to go to relax and get ur thoughts together
Really a cool gem of the city. Fun and interactive and shows part of the history of the city and awesome for future engineers seeing all the massive gears.
Nice place to relax on the grass after roaming around Philly. In summer these places are so breezy and calming to peacefully sit around.
Romantic view of the water outlined in stringlights and littered with happy people and cute couples. Great place for a date
One of America's first public water works, this was an original pumping station with a reservoir where the art museum now sits. The pumping station is a museum as a look back in time. Visit this first and then move into the art museum.
As a teenager we used to go into the aquarium to see the different species of fish that were housed there. Very educational
Beautiful place! Our tour guide was awesome! Tarsha was super patient with the students.
Little gem! Stumbled upon it accidentally but what an interesting place! The employees were awesome, really informative and super friendly.
Entertaining, amusing and interesting exhibit. A lot of information and I gained new appreciation for it's operations and impact on the community and environment
BE sure to stop in here if you're visiting the Philadelphia Art Museum. Lots of interesting things to learn about the history of water treatment in the history of Philly - and the staff here is super friendly.
Atmosphere great. Laid back. Friendly. Pleasant and felt safe
Beautiful location. Took the Riverside Tour. Ken was an excellent guide, providing lots of history about the Waterworks.
Love this park. Clean, bathrooms, food, water interesting history
Neat surrounding and scenic boat house, water in fishing dam. Night lighting in boat house is added color.
Been going there for years some of the best fishing around Bass large and smallmouth Stripe bass walleye shad etc .
Awesome place to visit. History of the water works since 1700. Part of the Fairmount trail system, right by Philly Museum of art
A very nice to relax and enjoy the surroundings and learn some historical facts of early engineering marvels....
Marvelous work. I bundled it with the art museum.
Must visit very cool place
The serenity of the place along with a great staff makes this a great place to be especially when you need to get away from the hustle and bustle.
We had a fun time at a friend's wedding here!

I might be bias been coming here since a kid with my dad it's beautiful here great memories ❤️
Philly has done a great job extending the walking and bike path south of the Waterworks. I hope the restaurant reopens!
Just walked around the ground, did not appear as though it was open for tours.
