Reviews of Edgar Allan Pоe National Historic Site
Stacie Stone
This was so cool to visit. The workers are friendly and really informative and helpful. You can tell they love what they do. The museum itself is bigger than I expected and is hands on and engaging. This is great for all ages and even casual Poe fans.
Brianne Glickman
I’ve lived in Philly for almost 40 years now and have never once seen Edgar Allen Poe’s house. My friend came to visit and it was on her must see places. We had a great time exploring each level, reading all the captions, watching a short film, and of course, stamping our National Park Passports. We did everything on a Saturday afternoon in under 40 minutes. I highly recommend checking this out if you are a fan of Mr. Poe or want something interesting to do that won’t eat up your whole day. It was truly very interesting.
Carrie Wolford
You could spend as much or as little time here as you want, depending on how big of a fan, or how interested in Edgar Allen Poe, you are. Even if you aren’t a huge fan, it is a cool historic site. We arrived close to the end of the day so we saw it all in 20-25 minutes. The sign on the door says knock once and that’s no joke. We weren’t sure if it was an inside thing that we just didn’t get but we knocked once and got let in. There was no charge and we didn’t even see a place for donations. There a small gift shop.
Austine Knoll
This was a really interesting place to visit. The staff were friendly and super helpful! You could roam at your own pace through the rooms and exhibits. Parking was easy, there was free street parking in front of the site, from the Poe museum we walked about 1 mile to independence hall.
Kari L
I found this place really interesting. I was surprised that this was his home for just about a year. The staff here are really amazing, and let you roam at your own pace. The phones that were throughout the main entrance was not working today, but that was ok.
Stephanie Rolon
This place is absolutely awesome. A must see for literary fans. Staff super knowledgeable and friendly. I felt like I was traveling through time.
Traci Coker (MurphyMe)
National Park Site - free entry - open Friday-Sunday. One of the 6 homes Edgar Allen Poe and family resided in while living in Philadelphia. Home where he created "The Raven". Definitely worth the visit for any literary nerd!
Sener Deniz (withazeta)
as a huge fan of poe, i enjoyed it a lot. the people who work there were really helpful and friendly too. it is free to visit and you can grab yourself some of his books or other merch once you are there to support this place.
Issa Lee
All of the Rangers were very helpful and genuinely seemed to enjoy sharing the history. The Range talk I attended was detailed, informative and entertaining. Self-guided tour, short movie, restrooms and a nice selection in the little gift shop area.
Susan Hopf
If you EVER get the opportunity to visit the Poe Museum in Philly DO IT. It it the best kept secret in the city. The house is a few blocks from Franklin Square, away from all the rest of the other museums and tourist spots. Not on most of the tourist maps or mentioned on the sight seeing buses, it's easy to miss but such a gem. Free to enter and explore, it offers quite a bit to it's visitors. There is an informative movie as well as a tour of the entire home and garden. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and each room offers a glimpse into Poe's life. The gift shop packed with cool and quirky Poe items that are priced far more reasonably than items found in most other museum shops we visited. (It was out favorite gift shop!) This was definitely a treat for horror and literature lovers.
Alexander Kirchberg
So cool. This is self guided and takes less than an hour. It has great Poe history and has a great gift shop.
Arlen Harris
I’m glad we stopped in. Any American literary nerd should stop here when visiting Philly. The volunteers and National Park staff are knowledgeable and it’s fun to walk around the house and take a trip through history.
Jennifer Deeter
If you're a Poe fan you have to visit his house in Philadelphia! It is amazing to see that part of his history!!
LA SM
It was an experience! You can feel the history in every room. Had a great time.
Anthony Alvarez
This is a pretty cool place to see and best of all it's free. There is a 15 minute movie they play that goes over Edgar Allan Poe's history really quickly, it was pretty interesting. The house itself is tiny and it can be looked at in 15-20 minutes. They provide you with an information sheet with facts and tid bits about the house. The little gift shop is cool too. The employees were great.
Ashley Faye
Fascinating man but seem always down In his luck, Always something new to learn about Mr Poe.
Christopher Harden
I was in Philadelphia for a Braves game. I own a collection of all of Edgar Allan Poe's works, but I have not read all of them yet. I would not call myself a huge fan, but I do enjoy his writings and I want it to visit this house. I walked there for my hotel and want to point out that it is in a slightly sketchy area, so I would only recommend walking there during the day. The park rangers that worked there at the house were very friendly and informative. The house is not furnished but they do have information on what each room was or could have been used for. Admission is free so I would recommend going there if you were in the area.
Lisa S
I passed by today to just get some photos of the outside of the museum. Unfortunately it is still closed due to COVID-19. Hopefully the next time I am in the area this place will be back open to visitors and I will be able to see inside one of the final homes of Edgar Allan Poe and give an even more positive review.
Michael Yell
Nobody wrote like Poe, and, even though he lived only a short while in Philadelphia, a number of his incredible short stories, as well as his poem "The Raven," were written in his Philly home which is now the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. It was remarkable walking into his small writing room and imaging him sitting at his desk penning those works. For those who admire his amazing use of language and dark imaginative stories, the Poe Museum is a must!
Kyle Milbrand
Really interesting site to get acquainted with Poe. Parking wasn't an issue on the street. The rangers were kind and helpful. Small gift shop area and an engaging junior ranger experience for the kids!
Courtney Cross
I didn't even know Poe was in Philadelphia! A little snapshot of a brief period.
Seazonz 219
A small museum with LOTS of information. Was hoping to capture a ghost or two, but they weren't playing. Seems like a fairly popular tourist destination which made me happy. Love EAP!!
Naseem Chaudhry
Visiting the Poe museum was great! There are two staff members there who are extremely kind and helpful. You knock once to gain entrance (recall a certain poem?). There is an option to watch a 8 minute video on his life. The film is very informative. The house has several rooms, the steps are steep so I recommend wearing flats. There is a cute little gift shop. I purchased a bookmark. Overall wonderful experience. Oh and admission is free.
Scott Falco
Awesome that we got to go to this place. Unfortunately it was not open due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So we could not go inside. The outside however was fascinating. However 1 block away from it in almost any direction except for the Liberty Bell exhibit, was typical of most inner city neighborhoods in the City of Philadelphia (thats all I'm saying about that).
Tamara Oakman
The tour guide gave my students an excellent tour and I received a teacher discount. There was a 90 mins tour, plus documentary. You have to book this ahead of time, but booking is easy, via email on the website. This is a great place to take your students, or just to visit. Parking was easy. My students and I really enjoyed ourselves.
J Pokakaa
The rangers here has so much information on not just Edgar Allen Poe but many of the other national sites. This house is set up nicely. Make sure you see the film.
Rachel Whelan
Small but well-maintained NS site observing Poe's time in Philly. Plenty of parking nearby.
JD Scott (JD)
The little 8 minute video that they show is informative, it is a great little piece of History, the souvenirs are great Tee Shirts Mugs books, I especially like the books I purchased one. It is just a neat little place to stop.
Ryan Karatimus
The Edgar Allan Poe house is a unique experience. This is quite a small site, and not very accessible due to the age of the building. It is interesting to hear of a chapter of Poe's life, however the interior is fairly bare. I believe this is part of the narrative of the history of the site. The National Parks staff and guild were very nice and informative.
Mark Hubman
Although it is closed for now, we greatly enjoyed our visit to the Edgar Allan Poe house. Can't wait to see the inside. Closely located to other historic sites in Center City.
Sarah
Great staff, lovely reading room, and authentic spoopy decorations in the cellar! Water bottle refill by the rest rooms is greatly appreciated!
A.K.J.
He lived there only a short time, but masterpieces were born there. Wish they had move furnishings of time period. Some room are empty. Still worth the stop and Yards brewery is a block down the street
Shaprieh Bean
Totally geeked out here. Have been a fan of Poe's since I could remember so seeing the place where he lived with his family for a year and The infamous cellar was a dream come true. Highly recommend stopping in. There's also a gift shop and a place to make Edgar stamps for a bookmark.
Kurt Schawacker
Fascinating exhibits of one of America's most influential writers, but it's a bit too empty. Murals show where things like Poe's writing desk used to sit, but it doesn't quite convey the feeling of the space as well as it could if they had antique replicas installed instead of simple images on the walls.
Giselle Mena
It remains closed (Dec 2021), but even though I knew that it was close, I enjoy to see the house from the outside and take some pictures.
Erica Marinaro
If you love The Black Cat, you will love being in Poe’s house. The inspirations for the story come to life as you walk around this small and quaint home.
Diane Albanese
Empty rooms. No authentic artifacts. An 8 minute video is all that gave us a sense of Poe. Steve, a knowledgeable park ranger, filled in the blanks with research about Poe, his writing and his life. Steve’s effort was Herculean and we enjoyed our time thinking about this great American writer in the Reading Room. But shame on the National Park Service for not creating a better display that tells the story of Poe in Philadelphia. Find this gem of a monument and support vital part of our American history: it’s literary giants.
Franny Ward
I visited this house many years ago as I worked across the street at Somerset Knitting Mills. I had the chance to go inside, and was thrilled to experience a piece of American History that hopefully will be preserved for many years to come.
Erika Turner
Amazing place. It's nice to see that such a historic place is being so taken care of. The employees here seemed very passionate and it made for a great visit. I would even go back.
Stephanie Doyle
Very interesting and sad. The staff was very kind and informative.
L Torres
The movies is very informative. Loved all the interactive displays. Learned a lot. The gift shop has great items.
Kristine Park
I'm into the history of a place and hey, if it's a bit on the "macob" side that's all the better so the Edgar Allen Poe House was definitely worth the trip. Seeing how I enjoy the odd and unusual, I thought I knew pretty much all there was too know about good ol' Edgar but no... I was pleasantly surprised to learn a few things about the time he spent living in Philadelphia that I did not know until reading the brochure. I also found it amusing that something was trying to make a home in the mouth of the statue of "The Raven" located in the side garden of the house so it looks as if there is something hanging out of its mouth and only adds to the eerieness thinking, "Hhmmm...wonder if that's a noodle from some Chinese takeout leftovers or some spaghetti from a big Italian Sunday dinner?" LoL it's a great location in a good neighborhood and easy to get to.. especially with the giant wall mural on the building next door. Next time I plan to go during its a"tour hours" and maybe I'll get to learn more about the man who put the "madness" he suffered from into words so we too could experience just a tiny bit of the thoughts and fears that tormented him until his death...RIP Edgar
Roger Frisario
Not a ton of stuff in there. The basement is creepy. Poe wrote some of his great works in Philly. Worth the stop. Staff was nice. Very informative.
Hannah Degn
This is a great little museum! They have a video in Poe and you can walk through the whole house. There’s interactive opportunities for kids and a reading room. Poe’s literary influence is incredible so it was fun to learn more about his time spent in Philadelphia!
Jeff Mathwig
Very informative. Make sure to ask a staff member to show you around. They know a lot about Edgar Allan Poe's life.
Vani Armstrong
Very cool! Free to get in, cute gift shop. Preserved house in which Poe briefly lived.
Ghost Bunny
Anyone who knows me will tell you I love Edgar Allen Poe! So I was soo excited to be at this house where he used to live! My heart was beating so fast through out the entire house!!!
Patricia G. Overman
This is a cute little place that needs some love. The staff was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed our visit.
Julie Gamponia
I loved visiting Poe's house and taking the self-guided tour through each room. Don't miss the cellar! There is a gift shop, and the park rangers are helpful and funny.
Jason Kaas
Aside from your interest in his literary works, there is not much at this site for a visit in my opinion. Most of his house and attached neighbors house is empty with a scene on tapestry draped in a room to make 1 wall not empty and broken. You can be done in 15 minutes. Actually a shame that the building seems to not be taken care of at all on the outside. Grass is not mowed and the shutters are eaten and falling apart. There is historical leave it be and then just common house maintenance.
Jacqueline Campbell
Historical site, a former home of Edgar Allan Poe. Great place to learn some history of Poe and his family and see where he lived and worked.
Emily
I would give this place 1,000,000 stars if I could. It is very simple, but incredibly informative. There are park rangers there to answer your questions or you can do a self guided tour( what we did). A Philly must do!
Krystal Kaster
Really amazing to be in such a historic place. No furniture, just the walls, a lot of information, a short 8 minute video, and gift shop. Wonderful and helpful staff!!!
Megan Sellinger
Interesting look at a place where Poe lived for a year, but not as many artifacts as I would have liked for a historic house. Still neat to learn more about Poe.
Jim Chung
Did not realize this museum is so close to the Chinese supermarket. Well worth a visit next time!
Christopher Ruiz
Definitely an experience for all tourist to come and see, very insightful, and beautifully well kept.
Stephen Avans
Edgar and his family lived here for a short time. The ranger at the location was very knowledgeable and worked with my kids to find answers to questions. It's amazing that this site was free.
Ben Schreiner
Interesting to learn about the history, but not much to it. A nice quick stop. The movie was informative and the best part
Rei Miller
I got the guided tour with Paul, and he adds some great commentary to the house.
Brenda Donlin
Worth the walk through the gritty neighborhood to peek in on the life of an American literary great.
Kyle Kate Dudley
This place is awesome! Enlightening and educational and even a little ...spooky. Architecturally interesting and great, informative Park Service staff. A must-see for literary fans!
Neida Vasquez
A site with so much character and a great atmosphere. One portion is a neighboring home converted to the entrance of the museum and the other is Poe's home with information on his life in Philadelphia. The reading room was the best part!!
george sigler
Well done, small National Park which includes a lot of information about Poe. Video is very interesting (even if it cuts out him living in Baltimore) and the rangers are extremely helpful, funny, and knowledgeable.
Fright Mike
Amazing locale for fans and staff was nice. Very easy, interesting and informative.
russwho1
We only had about 30 minutes to explore but this place is truly creepy and an amazing gem. I am thrilled we were able to make it.
Gabs LovesCoffee
Unfortunately we got there just after it closed for the day, but the outside was pretty, and looked well kept and as close to original as possible. It wasn't easy to see unless you were looking straight at it, and it was a little ways off the beaten path, but I'd like to go back and tour the inside at some point.
Laurie Jacob
Not a lot to see but it was really cool. Gift shop reasonable. Employees are very knowledgeable. Ladies doing the gardening were very kind & working hard.
Kacper Jarecki
It's free! This is the place where Edgar Allen wrote The Raven. It's also close to Silk City if you want somewhere cool to get a bite to eat.
Victoria Land
So sad that the museum is closed😕. I was able to visit before it’s closing & it is awesome! Definitely could feel the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe...
I was checking in to see if it would reopen in time for the 2021 Halloween season. To hold space for now, I suggest you check out the ‘Magical Broom 🧹 of the Wicked Witch of Khartoum’ by V.K. Howling (Amazon) which gives a cool nod to the Edgar Allen Poe House. It says for readers ages 7 to 107. So, if you fit that demographic, check it out.
Please open the Poe House soon!
Tiffany Peterdozzi
Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Definitely an experience I'm glad to have had.
Benji N
I learned a lot. The National Park Service ranger was super helpful and has nice exhibits.
Michael Shanken
Basically just the old house. No parking, only open on certain days, not really much there.
Mia Symonds
More geared towards children with the posters and tour information being very simplistic. Was somewhat disappointing, especially as it is outside of the main city area and takes a bit of extra time and effort to get to.
Janice Nash
I visited the year before Covid entered the picture. If you are a fan of Edgar Allen Poe's work, you shouldn't overlook this! It was pretty cool to wander thru the home and imagine him sitting at his desk writing, and the basement brought some of his tales to mind! The people staffing the home were informative and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed this historic residence! If you're in Philly, take a look, it's free!
Allie Genia
This was a really special visit! You start your visit by knocking with an actual knocker, which kind of sets the tone for the whole visit.
The entire tour did not take us very long - Poe didn't live at this house for very long, but it's thought that many of his major works were begun there. Being a National Parks site, the rangers are more than happy to answer your questions and direct you. Their love for this site is apparent. What little information they do know is on full display, along with relevant newspaper clippings from the time period discussing Poe's life and contemporaries.
Access-wise, it's not great. The stairs are very narrow and steep. There's not a huge amount of information in the upstairs rooms, but it is still pretty cool to go up there - you may want to call ahead and make sure you have a plan for your mobility aid if you want to visit.
Overall, this is an excellent visit! It's within walking distance of some of the other major National Parks sites; it's worth the time of the walk.
Michael Greenberg
Very informative about the life of one of America's greatest literary figures. There's a short self-guided tour of the house and yard, and small exhibit area.
Went on a Sunday morning and were the only visitors there, so if you are one to ask a lot of questions to the rangers it's very nice to get their full attention.
Deducted a star for a combination of the following: (i) rooms are unfurnished -- would be nice to see furnishings representative of the period, (ii) in the rooms there weren't formal exhibits but just a bunch of papers in individual plastic sheaths left loose on closet shelves, and (iii) no dedicated parking lot -- only street parking in a somewhat shady area. Still well worth a visit.
Robert Hinkelman
Friendly service great Great place to check it out nice displays
Nora Kri
Super cool place, really interesting visit.
Lilia Lucci
Excellent historic place. The guides are wonderful!!
Chrisie Allen
Neat house! Loved the video too. Free experience.
Carina Velasquez
I came here thinking It was going to be a quick pop in but I was wrong. I spent a good amount of time reading and learning about Poe's life in PA. There's no fee to enter in and there are 3 levels of the house (including cellar) to explore. The people curating the house were so nice and encouraging of us looking all around. they have a little section to buy gifts. The tour of the house is self guided and a nice place for kiddos who may want to wander to have a go. They have signs posted around with info of those who lived with him and pictures of how it looked when it was inhabited.
Nathaniel Wallace
Where EAP wrote "The Raven" & home has a quintessentially Poe vibe.
Joseph Croft
Love this place as a fan of Poe. Totally free and a great hidden gem. Tour guides are wonderful and very knowledgeable.
Eric Gottfried
Amazing Place about an American Literature Icon. 100% worth going to see when in Philadelphia!
Vicki Morgan
Small, but awesome. You get a nice overview of Poe's life and work. One of my favorite places in Philly. There are a few interactive exhibits for little people. Managed by the National Park Service, the Rangers are always friendly and knowledgeable, but the hours are limited. Check before you go, and remember they close for lunch.
james knepp
It was an amazing and unique experience one I shall treasure all the days of my life. I would highly recommend people go and visit there.
Lina “Em” M
A fascinating site! A very pleasant visit. The rangers are very kind and knowledgeable.
Bryan Rash
Although the house is very small and the tour is short, the rangers were very friendly and knowledgeable.
SaiSuki1329
Amazing experience. Definitely recommend it to Poe lovers and any literary lovers.
Rachel C
I can't believe I never went here when I lived in Philly... then again I don't think I read Poe until I wasn't living in Philly anymore. Go figure. Now that I'm a high school English teacher, I read his pieces & teach several of them. I find his poetry & several of his short stories to be VERY teachable.
So I'm really glad I got to visit the Poe House on my recent trip to Philly. It's small, but there's so much great info, the guides are very nice & helpful, and I just love the history of the place. It seems that if you're lucky, you might be regaled with a story from one of the guides (we were lucky enough to hear a summary of & talk a bit about "The Black Cat" while in the basement! Spooky! Haha).
I love the gift shop too. Just an overall cool experience!
Donna Barrett
A little out of the way. We could go in but still great to see.
Marcy R. Stearns
Very friendly and knowledgeable people working there. I found out about new things related to Poe.
Click Clack Productions
Great historical place to visit! However, the hours are limited due to the area of town it's in and I don't recall seeing any actual parking lots for it, but there was plenty of parking on a couple of the streets within walking distance. Also, this place didn't appear to be very handicapped accessible. Nevertheless, a great place to visit to learn some things about one of America's most admired writers.
Brady Santoro
Interesting, while rather small, national historical site, being one of the few remaining residences of the great 19th century writer Edgar Allen Poe. Not much of the house is actually remaining, most of the furniture and interior decorations of the original house are gone, and are replaced by rather antiquated and hard-to-read National Park Service signs that are at best relevant. You can visit what most likely was his room, his study, his beloved basement of horror and intrigue that looks like a haunted attic (and smells like one, too). The best part of the house is the Poe Reading Room, a room built from Poe's description of a 'good room' and equipped with period furnishings, a complete audio set of Poe's works, and various period books, including Longfellow and Scott. Is worth the trip as you will never see something like this again in your life, but is not the most intriguing or entertaining museum, and perhaps could need an update.
SapphicCyanide
Awesome, free experience. Definitely check it out!
Hannibal
It was a lot of fun here. As a lover of Edgar Allan Poe, it's a must see place. The rangers were all friendly and nice to talk to. I had a great time, and I went with my family. Good place for pictures, don't miss the Raven statue outside.
Ivana
A rare glimpse into a life of one of the greatest poets.
Andrew Main
Nice tourist spot in a slightly off the beaten path part of Philly. The neighborhood isn't the greatest, but the house itself is well maintained and staffed with very knowledgeable people. I was able to have a great conversation with the park ranger on duty and he really knew his Poe trivia and facts.
Admission is free, but make sure you leave a donation!
Rachel Antonio
We visited the Edgar Allan Poe house at the request of our 15 year old. The house turned out to be a great little museum. There was a short movie in the beginning, an informative timeline of Poe's career, and we were free to roam the house. The best was the creepy basement. Use your imagination. This house is free to enter and the rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly.
Richard Vickrey
I enjoyed visiting here for 45 minutes to an hour. There wasn't much to do, but it made my imagination peak!
Caroline Hale
Knock once for entry. Free admission. Excellent place to stop by - probably a 30-45 minute visit for most people. The rooms are mostly empty except for some cool newspaper clippings for the time period he was here and such.
Charles Zoltak
Great place to get a sense of the lifestyle led by one of America's greatest authors. It is free with helpful docents. Limited hours. Good crowd the day we were there but not crowded. A short film and self- or docent- guided tours.
Rebecca Mendoza
I would have liked to give this a five rating. However, as someone pointed out, this is pretty much an empty house. One of the rangers told us they have been unable to locate any of Poe's furniture. That is a mistake to have an empty house as a museum. I'm pretty sure they can find reproductions of furniture used during Poe's life. As I recall his mother-in-law lived with him and his wife, so I think it's a good guess that theirs was a fairly middle class lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with informing visitors that while the furniture was not Poe's, it's authentic to the era in which he lived. That would make the museum much more interesting to visitors, especially students. I hope the National Park Service will rethink leaving this treasure stand unfurnished.
William Szewc
Diamond in the rough. The only bad thing about this place is the hours - only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as of 8/2019. Free admission. Several exhibits about Poe and a short biographical video. Self guided walking tour of one of the homes the Poe's family lived in whike in Philadelphia. The park rangers are the real gem - they are able to add exquisite detail about Poe's life both while living in the house as well as in general. There is a reading room with a collection of all of Poe's works as well as 'stories on CD' that is open for public use. Sit for a while and connect with the surroundings! Worth the stop if you're nearby - not enough to warrant a trip to Philadelphia.
car dog
Blows your mind...! Looks closed but it isnt. The attention to detail of the staff there shows they take pride in their profession. They went above and beyond teaching my family and I. The lady was so nice there she even showed us what some of the plants outside are. My family loved it there. A BIG Thanks to the staff there. We really appreciate what you taught us. Still looking for the lemon plant for my own garden.
Christopher Aman
We loved this stop on our vacation. There are other places associated with Poe, but this one in particular has been well preserved to the condition it was when he lived there. Walking through the house, there is an oppressive feel, which might have influenced his writing. The Park Rangers there were VERY knowledgeable and a joy to talk with.
Rich Dansereau
Very well preserved. A bit crowded with tours.
Dana
I really enjoyed my visit. The park rangers here and very helpful and knowledgeable. Entry is free.
Heather
The house has a lot to offer in terms of knowledge of staff, artifacts, and works by the famous author. The house itself is old, without furniture, and without paint or wallpaper. So it seems underwhelming to look at at first. We still enjoyed the short stay, and I would say if you love the author, definitely go.
Jessica Nwaogbe
I didn't really plan to go here when I came in here but the place is packed with information and it's a nice place to go on a lazy weekend day, especially if you're a history buff. The museum is pretty laissez-faire and small. Like it's not that exciting unless old things excite you or you're a fan of Poe.
Brian Hagan
Very interesting historical spot. Recommend checking out for those visiting from out of town, like myself!
shyam mohan
Well managed. There is video session and a self guided tour of the house. Facts on the video though pretty accurate but is a little biased towards building a good image for the poet; acceptable. The Wikipedia article about Edgar Allan Poe I read before heading there felt a little more accurate.
Geoff Axtell
Very knowledgeable staff. Neat park (it's run by the National Park Service) in the middle of the city. Very informative. Guided tour took about 30 minutes, plus 8 minute video plus some wondering ... we were there about an hour.
Abby Springer
This was a great little stop in my trip to Philly. The rooms are not restored and you can walk through out the whole house(including the basement), which was actually really cool. Very neat to walk through!
Joseph William Shaw sr
It is my favorite place to go and think. I like sitting in the little room on the 2ed floor right when you come u the steps. I dint know what the room was for because it's 5 foot by 5 foot we're little window and when I asked the people they said no it's not a closet so I like sitting in there and thinking and doing my road and in there and also I like sitting in the basement it is a great place to go and think! Its like You're in a place of a great man who had such great knowledge. Is a amazing feeling
Juan Salinas
If you admire Edgar Allan Poe works, must go there. Histirical place.
Trevor Myers
Such an awesome place. My kids enjoyed it just as much as my wife and I. They do have a j uh bior ranger program for the kids which keeps them occupied. It's a very hands on type of place which is good for the kids because they want to touch everything to see it. A lot to lean about edgar allan Poe and his family plus a little gift shop inside.
Roxann Howard
This was our favorite stop on our vacation to Philadelphia and Washington DC. Rather than a restored home, this is just the shell of the house he lived in. You can imagine Eddie walking through the rooms and walking up the stairs. The interactive exhibits are fun, but the highlight of the tour was the Ranger's telling of "The Black Cat" by Poe in the basement....creepy....
Cole Clark
Very nice park rangers. They were really well informed and wanted to help. It's kind of short and out of the way and he only lived here a couple years. Otherwise it was a pretty cool house.
Ricardo “Ricky” Vargas
Small little historic site that is free of charge. There's a short movie, a self guided tour of the house, a small musuem section, and a tour of the cellar. The whole thing takes less than an hour and is a great place to stop at.
Peter Dolan
This was great. I took my family as part of spending the day in Philadelphia. The rangers are good and enthusiastic about the house and giving tours. I recommend reading The Black Cat before going and watching the 8 minute video about Poe's life at the house.
Gerard Murphy
Very instructive visit. October is a great time to visit this house where Poe once lived. The Rangers and volunteers are very knowledgeable. If you like the work of Edgar A. Poe you will like this.
Heather Whidden
This was the first time I had visited here since I was a little girl. It was more worn down, but that is to be expected. I had forgotten just how interesting Poe was until I had gone through the tour in his house. Poe was an amazing writer/poet.
Ganesh Srinivasan
If the stories of Edgar Allan Poe have touched you or moved you you will cherish the moments you spend here. The welcoming Park ranger and the self guided tour of the house and brief video of Poe's life help you live his presence . Do not forget the reading room and the Raven in the garden!
Richard Matheny
The Poe house was very interesting - and it was free to get in. As a plus, they had a nice sitting room to read some of Poe's work in. Overall, this is a nice stop to make if you're visiting Philly.
Saurajyoti Kar
Amazing introduction to Edgar Allan Poe's life for anyone who knows and doesn't know yet about him. Great staff to welcome and introduce to different themes of the exhibition. A warm small library where you can sit and relax while going through some of the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Jim C.
Amazing how small these houses were. It is unfurnished but what made this an awesome visit was the Nat'l Parks Ranger/Docent. His Poe knowledge was impressive. Thank you.
Ni K
It's a simple layout of Edgar Allan Poe's house. It shows the original walls, wood floor and cellar where Edgar wrote some of his famous stories.
They have some interesting documents that tell u some secrets of Edgar. Also a nice set out for reading room according from Edgar's book.
Watch the short film of Edgar, that'll give u the general idea of this place.
Talk to the staffs there! Steve and Patricia were so helpful with tons of info to share with u!!
Thanks so much for them, I had so much fun there!
Brandon Bradley
Free parking on the street. Free walk through of Edgar Allan Poes house, he treats you right.. Edgar is a good guy, a nice local attraction that is worth visiting! & You can park outside in residential then walk a half mile to Chinatown or the liberty bell. 10/10
Adam Griffin
Really interesting little spot. Not really a TON to do there but def a nice stop and easy way to to burn an hour for free. Cool to hear about a side of Edgar Allen Poe that i didnt know (that he lived in Philadelphia!)
Julia Santiago
Unfortunately it was close but got to read a podium with information on it.
Layla Kilmister
Eh nothing to get excited about. The place was closed. I didn't realize that this area was in the homeless district, wasn't very safe.
Nadezhda Gracheva
Couldn’t get in because of unclear working hours.
Tim Gansert
Amazing your from only the best at the National Park Service. This iconic house is open and accepting guests for group and individual tours, with or without a tour guide. A supreme example of Philadelphia life in the times of Edgar Allan Poe.
Nicholas Hopson
Nice place, gift shop available
Jannet Torres
Edgar Allan Poe's fan must visit his house :)
Sahil Singh
One of my favorite authors.
Made it a point to visit this place when I was in Philadelphia. Reached till a stone's throw distance of this place when it suddenly started raining heavily.
Had a bus for new York, so took a cab back.
Will have to wait till my next visit to USA.
The place isn't perhaps for everybody, but you may have a soft corner for literature in general, and in works of edgar allan poe.
I visited the central libraries rare books section where there's the pet raven of Charles Dickens, named grip (in rare books section, near Elkins library), this is said to have inspired edgar's work, raven. The statue of this raven is also present near his house ( I couldn't see myself, had seen that I pictures).
Quite interesting is the way things connect, makes the whole travel more meaningful.
Janine Cappello
Took my students. The Park Ranger, Joanne, was an amazing guide and storyteller! Prep your students first. I had read 3 stories and shared Poe's bio before we went.
Boring Jmoche
It was really cool seeing where Poe lived and being able to feel the aura of that place. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and let you roam through the house at will.
Mildred León
Very interesting and informative place. If you are a Poe fan and are in PA, this is one of the stops you should add to your itinerary.
Everything is well kept, and the staff were really helpful.
Sayak Chakraborti
Secluded place. But a must visit if you have read 'The Raven'. The staff at this place are super friendly and helpful. There is a small reading room at the back where you can sit and read.
Michael Tallarico
Being a big fan and admirer this was a great place to learn about the master himself!
Tara Sherman
This was the best free museum I’ve ever visited. I felt obliged to shop the gift shop, which was fine because it is well stocked. We really enjoyed this hidden gem!
Josue Anyosa
The place is really nice, the tour guide provided very important information.
One half of the museum is a store where you can buy E.A.P’s books and other interesting things related to the world of E.A.P.
Milagros Gonzalez
It's a great Historic place to visit with friends and family!
Douglas Knapp
Ranger Helen is the best! I noticed some people did not like the empty house. I enjoyed the empty rooms and whitewashed walls; it left a little for the imagination... much like Poe's writing.
Megan Rivera
As an Edgar Allan Poe fan, this was a great experience. What made it even better was the knowledge of the volunteers. Make sure you check out the basement for the unique "feature" ;)
Sheryl Yvette
Fun little self guided tour with knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. (also: free!)
Sara Mazariegos
Edgar Allan Poe is such a fascinating person. This is the home of him and his family for a year while his wife was ill with tuberculosis before they moved on to NYC. He wrote The Black Cat here, possibly inspired by the eerie cellar.
Karen Chau
If your a Poe fan...which I am...you have to visit this place! Very very interesting...and the building is visually gorgeous as well...love that old school brick style.
Robert Schlatter
Great house museum where the famous writer once lived. The basement is suitably spooky, and the bare rooms fit in well with Poe's personality
Su
fascinating place, staff are wonderful, great gift shop, neighborhood can still be a bit rough, despite all the gentrification in Philly. Keep your wits about you. Come into area from Spring Garden St. if you are on foot or taking public transit or park close by if driving.
Danny Thornton
If you're into history as much as we are this is definitely a must visit place. I would highly recommend putting this on your to-do list while visiting the city of Philadelphia. Especially if you are visiting either Center City or The Old City.
Matt Fidler
Pleasantly surprised by the Edgar Allan Poe house. I was concerned because it was free, but the people who work there do a really nice job explaining things to you. This is a really cool visit if you're a fan of Poe.
Sean Green
Amazingly put together very informative
Peter Kidd
There's very little to see apart from the house itself -- mostly rather empty rooms -- but if you want to learn about Poe, it's as good a place as any.
Russ Haggerty
Easy parking and access. Not many people on tour. Rooms baren no furnishings but history of his short stay here interesting.
Wesley Harney
A little cobbled together to be honest. It's neat that it's still there but there's nothing of Poe or his family left there to show how they lived, everything is essentially made up based on how they think it would be. Not really worth going out of your way for.
Adrian toro
Very great experience. I never knew about this place . great tour guide with alot of info. Must see its free but hard to find parking unless you want to pay
Randall Minghelli
This place was very much worth the stop. Very knowledgeable rangers. You could tell they really got in to the vibe of the place. The video did a good job of giving you a good overview. I recommend this place.
Bryce Caster
Admission is free to the former home of Edgar Allan Poe. The first floor has a museum on Poe's life. The rest of the house is unfurnished- including the basement, which only adds to the Poe ambiance.
Kyrsten Carlson (kykapoo)
There was no one here when we in mid Friday. It was amazing. I love Poe so I loved exploring it on my own. Just being there is enough. Definitely go!
Thom Young
Very entertaining guided tour of the only Philedelphia residence of Poe which is still standing. Free admission. Easy to get to from the airport, Chinatown or the historical district.
Anthony Feghali
It's a great place to visit for 20 mins. You can tour his house on Philadelphia. Recommend the 8min video too on the tour. It's free to visit
Stephen Pipson
Did not make it inside but looks interesting
Keith Crook
Must visit for a Poe fan. The Rangers are great and it's really interesting to see where Poe got some of his inspiration. Definitely a worthwhile site to see.
Katie Marie
Nice place loved the tour just wish there was more my family spent 15 mins there and then that's it you watch a video and go through 2 small connected houses just want to see more but still better then that mess that they now call the Ben Frankin house.
Zeal Amare
Awesome experience! Super insightful. So much to learn and see about his history that's not available on too many other places. Definitely worth checking out
T AA
This was a house where edgar allan poe lived at one time. House has a sad energy and they show a short film about his life. Although he was a famous poet, his life was short and challenging.
Kelli Stewart
I was absolutely amazed at the history of the house! The marble steps into house was exciting to walk on! That was the true steps to walk on through history just knowing edgar Allen poe made same steps! AMAZING!..
Jim C
Cool stopover in Philly. The rangers were very knowledgeable and obviously passionate about their work.
Don't expect to spent a ton of time here.
Zachary Boroda

Noah Hepler
Super friendly and knowledgeable Rangers and volunteers (as one would expect). Plus a fun little gift shop and reading room.
max cizauskas
I joined a high-school students tour after the video, which is totally the way you've got to do this to get the 5 star experience. Without that it would have been very empty and desolate
Ðueý FṀ
Very interesting and original tour, make sure you check out the cool things for sale after the tour.
iR0nMAn_AF
If you because I've never been in but park across the street from it daily. The property seems well keep despite there being project housing within the immediate vicinity.
Donna Weiche
The rangers were very helpful and the movie is very good.
Brad Fagerlie
his house is empty save for some scraps of poetry, a fitting tribute to a man who has been a slate for projection of so many thoughts. the adjoining house has exhibits and a video primer of the man.
amy blattel
Not the best neighborhood and check the hours before you go as they are not open during the week. The house is cool if you are in to literature it is something to see
Miranda Cardonick
It was very historical and gave lots of information on how he came up with his stories and poems and what he went through during his life with a tour telling about the rooms and his family.
Dj Helmes
Great historical spot, very interesting person

Awesome historical site. Rangers were super nice and loved their job. I learned so much! Don't skip this!

Very informative Park Rangers! Nice introductory 8 minute video. Must stop if you are into Poe at all.
Richard Regal
Great tour and great history. A must for Poe lovers or anyone interested in American literature.

(Translation) Although the place is slightly away from the center, it can be reached perfectly by taking a walk from Chinatown, for example.
The place is magical, because it is where Edgar Allan Poe wrote one of his most important works. They have everything very well resolved, although most of the rooms are empty.
Best of all is the staff. Linda is an extraordinary woman who places you in the rooms and tells you everything with great passion. A luxury.
It is completely free and you have everything seen in 30 minutes.

(Translation) It is a very simple and straightforward museum, there is not much furniture or much to read in each room, HOWEVER... The place has a special and magical vibe that if you are an Allan Poe lover you will surely enjoy, from the moment you knock on the door to accessing the house you will understand the magic of the place, the staff is extremely friendly with visitors and the best thing is when you visit the famous attic.

(Translation) The search for places related to Edgar Allan Poe continues. Quite by accident I saw this house on the map of Philadelphia and, without hesitation, went there. It’s very close on foot from the center, but you don’t have to go into Franklin Park, there is no convenient exit to this place from there, you have to go out and bypass the entire park. As I understand it, this is the only surviving building in Philadelphia, where Poe lived with his wife and mother-in-law. You can go inside only on weekends, on weekdays you can simply clean the soles of your shoes on a special scraper by the stairs.
So, I already have the Poe house in Queens, New York, the Poe museum in Richmond, the Poe monument in Boston. Next up is a museum and Poe's grave in Baltimore. I'll try to visit before I leave.
