Reviews of Birmingham Zoo
MsKrayola
We visited yesterday for Memorial Day. There wasn't a line to enter so that was great. The zoo layout is good and the pathways provide a combination of sun and shade so we weren't too hot. I believe the majority of the animals were out for us to see. They don't give you a physical map and the digital one was confusing. It is better to use the large maps throughout the park.
Now for the cons. A lot of the exhibits with glass were hard to see through because it was so dirty. It made seeing and taking decent pictures nearly impossible. The food and drinks are so overpriced. Pack your own water to avoid paying $5 a bottle. There were quite a few off exhibit display signs so I'm not sure which animals we didn't get to see.
Overall a good experience. We enjoyed ourselves.

We came to celebrate my nephews first birthday. I enjoyed the Zoo so much. I want to get a season pass and come out more. I love that they have many shaded areas along with a splash pad for the kiddies. I love that you can rent a wheelchair, electric cart , or strollers for the kids. I love that the Zoo has upgraded and I actually enjoyed the food here too.

We had such a fun day. At the gate you can purchase tickets for the train ride, carasel and general admission. You can purchase tickets to feed the giraffes, as of Sept 24, 2022 it was $4 per person, kids under 2 is free. The zoo employee was sweet in handing us lettuce to give to the giraffes and take pictures for us. We loved seeing the primates and the elephants. There are loads of animals to see such as zebras, ostrich, red pandas, sand cat, lion, jaguar, and so on. They are adding some new exhibits very soon. If you do the train make sure to check the times for when it departs, we made a mistake of not checking and ended up not being able to get onto the train by the time we left the zoo. If you need strollers or wheelchairs you can rent those, the kiosk is on the outside of the gift shop. They don't hand out maps, there is a QR code you can scan to get the map on your phone. The gift shop is very nice, we bought only a magnet but they sell toys, stuffed animals, clothes, hats, jewelry, hand soaps, posters and many more things.

My family and really enjoyed this zoo. It wasn't over crowded and had many of the animals we wanted to see. The zoo had map boards posted so it was very easy to navigate around. We had a great time and I highly recommend this zoo.

Glow Wild at the Birmingham Zoo is absolutely incredible. There are many lighted sculptures and it's fun to meander around and try to see them all. The train ride is about 8 minutes and you get to see a lot of different areas. This is a great family-friendly event that's totally enjoyable for adults as well. Have a hot chocolate with Schnapps to take the chill off and wander around the fairy tale grounds. Highly recommend! Also can't wait to visit the Zoo in the daylight hours and see the real animals which are not part of Glow Wild since it's dark.
Sabrina Quick
I would definitely recommend! Food and drinks are horribly overpriced!!!! Almost $5 for a 16.9 bottle of water. Didn’t get to see any tigers. They only had a lioness no lion. All we saw was 1 elephant. We went with our daughters school. It was still great! Had lots of fun!

A smaller Zoo that still hits all the big points. I unfortunately visited in the off season, when many of the animals were inside due to cold or having their exhibits renovated, which the ticket lady did warn me about, but I still felt like I got my money's worth. The staff seem to take very good care of the animals at least from what I could observe of them. Critter, the fennec, is especially entertaining when he isn't sleeping.

I really enjoyed the zoo it had everything spread out and spaced nicely. There was a lot of shaded spots to cool off and rest if you were tired from walking. I was a little disappointed on how dirty the glasses were to all the exhibits. I was very surprised at how close you could get to some of the animals in the different fence exhibits. I felt like if the animals were in there anyone could throw anything in to the animals or someone could get hurt. I brought my grandbaby here she was happy so that made me happy.
Nataliia Beaulieu (Natalie)
We came to see Christmas lights at the zoo. It's 24 dollars per ticket. Nice Christmas lights, train ride, big light-up animals from metal construction, I think, not blow-up animals as we thought. So it's better and nicer looking.
Virginia Smith
Had a great time. Some attractions were not working due to weather. Did take the kiddos swimsuits for the splash pad. That went over well. Food and drinks VERY overpriced. Fun was had. Would recommend. Able to get SNAP discount.
Maegan Duncan
Great time with family. Just a few suggestions the food at the 205 nutrition cafe is horrible and over priced. I thought they might have bananas and apples or some kind of fruit with nutrition being in the name but nothing nutritional on the menu besides a 12$ salad. Also so very hot 🥵 Not to many fans thru out the zoo you mostly rely on shaded areas. Glass is very dirty also at most attractions. Overall great experience with family and seeing animals.
Erica Jones Nolen
We love coming to the zoo! The kids especially enjoy special programs like the Halloween event: "Hoots and Howls". There are crafts (we made pinecone spiders), information stations, feeding times, and a candy trail! Plus, there's always the fun of riding the train and carousel. ❤️
Kevin Rene
Nice size zoo, you can see everything's and be leisurely about it in about two hours. The Birmingham botanical gardens are also close. Get there early and get tickets online to avoid the crowd! Food was quick at their zoo restaurant. Parents and kids can be rude in this area though, that's not the zoos fault! A few animals were not in exhibits, hopefully everyone will be "home" by summer. Interesting play structures for children.
Sharon Gadbois
Lots of space dilapidated but could be because of the lack of employees. Everyone was nice though. The animals were happy and well kept. I wish I could've fed the giraffes. I can say it's good to go first thing in the morning, right when they open. Buy your ticket online before you leave - you can do it right from your phone. Easy peasy. The staff practices their manners on all guests and they wear their masks too.
Janessa Lavender
It was a nice outing for my girls. But none of the extra activities where available like the train. Paid in advance for another little ride and get there and it's not available. And the male lion looked malnourished and depressed. Other than that it's was a nice activity for a sunny Saturday morning
Regina Crouch
Was kind of disappointed. Some of the animals were not out(for example the zebra enclosure is viewable from different sides, there were no animals out) or their cages were being cleaned(I understand this needs to be done. The zoo closes at 5, Should be done after hours when possible). Was on a field trip with my nephew's class. All of the rides were down besides the carousel. There were at least five other schools there. I'm sure I wasn't the only disappointed person.
It was clean. The staff I dealt with were all polite.
Jon Hammont
Great Zoo for family's! We visited from Atlanta and had a blast with the kids. Animals all happy and easy to view! Would visit again in a heartbeat.
Kay Campbell
Sweet zoo. Facilities showing their age somewhat, but animals are well cared for & thoughtfully displayed. Food inside is nearly twice the price of outside, but tasty. Lorikeet feeding is fun. Go early before the birds get full.
Brooklyn H
Our 2 year old had his first zoo trip about 2 weeks ago & he LOVED it! We will definitely be back. The red panda and sea lions were my favorite!
Melissa
One of my favorite places in Birmingham! I bought a membership and go as often as I can. For being a smaller zoo, there is a wide variety of animals on exhibit. My favorites are the river otters, cats, and monkeys, but there is something for everyone. I look forward to the shows opening back up after the pandemic. You can see the whole zoo in about 1-2 hours, depending on how long you stop at each exhibit. The gift shop is lovely. The splash pad, carousel, and petting zoo area are great for kids and parking is easy and free. It’s also right across the street from the Birmingham botanical gardens so if you can, visit both while you’re there!
Katie Barksdale
The Birmingham Zoo had a large variety of animals. Clean atmosphere and easy to navigate. All of the personnel were very friendly and informative. The only con is the price of food items, it was about $70 for three to eat lunch. Also, the ticket prices are a little steep for young teenagers. There should be a middle school discount. 13 year olds are not adults. Overall, it was a wonderful day.
Charles Pepper
Had one of the best birthdays there in 57 years just browsing the selection of animals with my new wife who has never been to a zoo of any kind. Wonderful facility.
Phillippia
We visited the zoo on a Wednesday morning during our summer vacation. We arrived one hour after opening. The lot was probably half full. No waiting at any of the ticket booths out front. They no longer have paper maps, which is great for the environment but not practical for those that don't want to kill thier cell phone battery using GPS to easily navigate the digital map they offer.
Tickets were pricey...$14+tax for kids under 12. $19 plus tax for adults. We had a discount on one adult ticket as the person buying the tickets had a military I.D. Usually places give a military discount across the entire purchase, but they only gave it on his particular ticket.
Once inside, my children's excitement (and mine) quickly began to wane. One exhibit after another and no animals. We immediately went to see the elephants and there were only zookeepers there cleaning. Went on to the rhino cage and there was none there (exhibit being built). We went to the trail for local animals and no bears, despite a bear icon being shown on the map. Went through the primate exhibit and at least 3 of the animals were not there. Went into the reptile exhibit and the main attraction, the Komodo Dragon, was not there. There were no tigers, hyenas, hippos, chimpanzees or many of the other big animals you would expect to see in African/Asian habitat areas of a zoo.
We stayed for a little over 2 hours and after circling back a couple times, we were finally able to see the elephants right before we left at least.
We bought the kids drinks to beat the summer heat, a 20 ounce soda and a Powerade. These two drinks were just over $9. I assume these high prices for tickets, beverages, etc are to help with the high cost of maintaining so many big animals, however the high cost to the customer should also mean more effort should be put into providing a good experience. For example, couldn't the zookeepers have cleaned the habitat BEFORE the zoo opened? Elephants, lions, tigers, etc are the main attractions...they should be available to view by opening time as a rule considering the high prices. No one wants to visit a zoo, pay high prices, walk around in the heat, only to leave without seeing the animals they came for.
I would not recommend this zoo.
Elizabeth Gary
What a great Kindergarten field trip! The Birmingham Zoo has made a lot of positive improvements since my last visit nine years ago! This was such an adventure! My 6 year old will be talking about this trip for the next few months!
Lance Wendling
I just bought an annual membership and got a great discount for being a veteran. Awesome place, but hurry up and get those rhinoceros! Also please get a tiger!!! I'm a single dad and I love doing educational things with my children.
Rebecca Law
Celebrated my sister 32nd Birthday. It was a hot day but beautiful and fun to see God's majestic amazing animal kingdom. Thank you all who work and serve there. It was clean in food service areas and the animals had clean enclosure and looked hot and happy
Wanda Kelley
We really enjoyed our visit. Love the layout of the walking paths. Nice way to spend a lazy afternoon. Would definitely visit again next time we're in the area.
Gerald Williams
It’s been awhile since I’ve been to the Birmingham Zoo, so I took the family to Glow Wild night. It was wonderful! I will be back to check out the animal exhibits.
Heather Randolph
We had one of the best times. It was a nice day, not to crowded. Lots of walking because the animals have huge spaces to live in.
Trippy Hippy
Fun for the kids but as an adult kinda depressing. Not an animal activist but some exhibits were just sad to see in my opinion once you look past the excitement of seeing such beautiful creatures.
Linley Frye
Incredible experience with new things being added every year. COVID shut down some fun activities but I think they should be back soon. Staff could be more friendly though
Kim Chestnut
Cute little zoo. The predator cat exhibit was cool. The star your mask to protect the animal signs were ridiculous. The train ride was just ok. They need to clear out some brush so that you can actually see the animals when on the train. We are spoiled with the st louis zoo so this didn't even come close to comparing to that, but it was a nice zoo. The giraffe exhibit was cool because you get up really close to them, same with the elephants.
Elisha Jones
Took a trip to The Birmingham Zoo for my daughter's school field trip mid-October. The weather was nice - not too hot or too cold - and there were not as many people visiting in contrast to other times I have visited (which I actually prefer). Some exhibits (e.g. giraffe feeding encounter) were closed, including the splash pad which is understandable. The Goat Walk, train and carousel (both require separate ticket purchase) were open as well as the gift shop and the dining area. We got to see a wide range of animals there; the only ones I didn't see were tigers, rhinos or hippos.
By far, my favorite exhibit there is the Lorikeet feeding experience! My 8 year old daughter and nephew were scared of the birds but I truly enjoyed it! You purchase nectar cups ($3 each) at the entry of the exhibit and as you enter, the brilliantly colored birds fly towards you, perch on your arm and drink the nectar!! I went through it twice! There were other kids that went through it with no problem, so I guess it really depends on your child.
Overall, it was a enjoyable trip! Not the best zoo I've been to, but it definitely is a great introduction to zoos for young children. Will absolutely return!
Bill Koehler
You can pay about half more the price of admission for a zoo affiliation membership and go as many times as you want. The affiliation also applies to other member zoo's such as the Nashville zoo.
Good variety of animals, reptiles, and birds.
The Train ride was out of order while we were there, but good time of year to go (March), since it wasn't hot outside yet.
Some of the concession stands weren't open yet either.
Nice barn at one corner with many animals that the kids can pet...that also like to be rubbed, like sheep and goats.
The gift shop is nice but priced high; although the extra proceeds go to animal care at the zoo.
n john
Beautiful zoo and not hard to locate little to no line on a Sunday. No pets allowed and kids were everywhere. I’d return when it warms up a little. Great place to visit.
Heather Rentfrow
This zoo is a lot of fun! We watches the sea lion show and got to see the elephants be fed! There is a splash pad for kids and a carousel and train as well. My personal favorite was the butterfly house!
Amber Duckworth
Absolutely beautiful.
The staff was hands down amazing, answering any questions we had.
The food is pricey without a membership but SO GOOD.
You can take your own food in.
We actually bought a membership when we left; it was an absolute blast.
James Zahn
Only 4 stars for a few items. There are no longer paper maps and the online map is terrible. Also the splash pad was out of service. However the entrance fee was waved for veterans on Memorial Day
Diana Jaafreh
Great place to go out with kids, very spacious and lots of animals,
You can feed the giraffe, and lorikeets, they have 2 nice splash pads, restaurants and slides.
Heather S
We went for a school field trip and it was so much fun! There were quite a few animals that weren't out and places being remodled, but that means it will only get better! I cannot wait to see the lights this season, I'm sure that will be spectacular.
Mike McHugh
Christmas 🎄 Light Show was beyond awesome drawing huge crowds and happy faces to take in the mood of the Season! Thanks to Admin and Staff for the Family Atmosphere and for caring!
Cecily Caudle
Great place to visit with kids or adults. Kinda pricy, but worth the trip at least once. The yearly pass or using a reciprocal discount is very helpful.
Can't wait for all the exhibits and attractions to open back up :)
Went back with a school field trip, and it's way packed. Still enough room for everyone to enjoy, but I will avoid weekdays in the spring for awhile.
Alexandra Lee
One of the best zoos I’ve been too. The facility was very clean, the staff were very helpful and delightful, shout out to the grill staff. They were awesome! I love the patio of the grill, love eating with a view. The giraffe feeding was amazing. It was a better photo op than other zoos! The animals were so curious of the people and actually came up to the front. Parking was a breeze and I love the free parking. We came from Texas and this was better than the closest zoo to us. The only exhibit that was close was the reptile, but that give us a reason to come back again. Also the gift shop was cool. I collect the pennies and found a book holder! I also loved the penny machines.
Beth Moffett
This zoo is truly a gem. Small in comparison to big city zoos, but does a lot with what they have. Extremely well laid out and easily walkable with children. Nice variety of animals. Doesn't try to have everything, but gives lots of space to a few large animals and still close enough for viewing. Took about 2 hours with a toddler to see the whole zoo, and get a train ride (a highlight!)
Roslyn Thomas
Our trip to the zoo was amazing. I love the excitement in my kids eyes when we go and this time we stop to feed the giraffe
Mirica Williams
I went for their hoots and howls event for Halloween with my family. My little brothers had fun so I did too. A lot of walking of course and food prices are high, but the experience was nice. Also, the lighting there was amazing and I got amazing selfies😌
Francis Herring
The front entrance is very appealing but as you walk through the zoo you can tell either they don't have enough staff to help but the place looks a little run down. A lot of the exhibits are not open. We had a lady in the zebra exhibit was very rude. Bring extra money for drinks and food because a lemonade is $7 a hamburger is $11. Other than that we enjoyed spending time with our church group, family, and friends.
Jessica Ikewood
We had so much fun and not bad weather for our first trip here!! There was a few exhibits that were being worked on but still was not disappointing.
Sophia S. Photography
Large, clean zoo with a diverse variety of animals. Birds, reptiles, large and small mammals all reside here. There were quite a few exhibits that were closed, and due to the netting and barriers, it is tough to get good photos of the animals that you see. Needs some updating there, but overall the zoo was beautiful and the staff was nice. Food at Nourish 205 was exceptional.
Ian Brannon
The Zoo was a lot of fun mostly! Unfortunately there is/was a lot of habitats that were empty. The Rhinoceros habitat was closed off, and the website implies that it would be there and viewable.
Nicole Hicks
Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our visit to the zoo. A lot of the animals were not in the exhibits. I will say the layout of the zoo is wonderful very easy to follow but again we must have come at the wrong time. Maybe we will give it another try.
Ed Bartkiewicz
My wife my son and I had a really good time. It is well worth it to pay to feed the giraffe 🦒 lettuce. …
Mary Wilson
Very nice zoo. We visited on a weekday afternoon, and there was no line to get in. That being said, a lot of the animals were not in their habitat, and we were not told that prior to purchasing tickets. We saw about 3 or 4 animals, so it was kind of a letdown as I had been there many years ago and remember it as a great place for kids to view animals. Our toddler still had fun running around. The layout of the zoo is great, and the maps within the zoo are more useful than the app. We had a nice hike around the zoo but wish there were more animals to view. We definitely want to come back when more animals are back in their habitats.
Live Life Large
I love this place!! Beautifully landscaped, the animals look well cared for, it was just terrific. They were getting ready to put up Christmas and THAT looked amazing!!
Freebie Babe
It has been a while since I have taken my kids to the Zoo but as always they enjoyed it. They have done some extensive renovations and it was good that we went around 2pm because that is their feeding time which meant that the animals were active or atleast close enough to the feeding doors to be seen. I love the addition of benches so you can take a break here and there.
Dan Sutton
It has a ot of potential, but several exhibits were closed when we went. Food is expensive which is somewhat expected. It seems like they had more exhibits than they did animals, so several areas had the same types of animals in them.
Norman Tweet
Nice, medium-sized zoo. It takes about two hours to walk around the whole place if you're not stopping to look at the animals. They don't give you a handheld map, but it's easy enough to navigate using the many signs around the zoo. I unfortunately was here in the off-season and also while they were doing some reorganization, so a lot of animals weren't out and about. And food and refreshment options were more limited. Even so, I still think it was worth the price of admission if you enjoy seeing animals.
Anouska Willett
This is such a great zoo! Try checking out their events, too! The Glow Wild was amazing!
Alison Garza
We love the zoo! Always a great place to take the kids where they can run and play. Glow Wild is really pretty but too pricey. Even with our membership discount, it was a lot for our family to go. We'll continue going to the zoo but we'll skip Glow Wild in the future.
William Stubbs
Incredible value! Great family fun! Wide selection of animals with intimate viewing experiences. Walkable, and great food options.
Melissa Barry
Glow Wild event was well worth it. I took my adult daughter and in law...we had a blast.
Laconia Byron
The Zoo is awesome. My daughter loves 💘 every minute of it. I love having a membership. My daughter be super excited about the water sprinklers. Hours of endless fun and learning. …
Mike Allen
Did the light show. It was a fun time and a beautiful night. Seemed like the shops closed early. At times the paths were not clear for directions and lighting was non-existent in some areas by the water which made walking a bit tricky. Seems to be highly over-priced...almost $100 for four adults and one 2-year old.
Vicki Irons
Zoo was clean with a lot to do and see. I wish I could have seen the elephants better. We had a great time and will be back!
Marly Carmona
First time visiting the zoo and I liked it. It was my first time seeing zebras and giraffes!💕
Kristin Dion
The otter exhibit, goat contact yard, playground, and butterfly garden were big hits with the kids, while I loved the extravagant summer blossoms!
Weblaunches Team
I’ve been to the zoo hundreds of times over the last 20 years and it was just sad to see the state that it’s currently in.
The animal cages in many areas seemed like they were dirty. the bathrooms are old and need to be updated. We went to ride the train which has been a forever favorite of ours And unfortunately the ticket system was down….. they couldn’t take credit cards or cash.
The girl was very kind and was desperately trying to reboot her system and make it work but in order to ride the train our entire group had to send someone to the front of the zoo to get tickets from another location and run back to the train location and then we were able to finally all ride it. We had small children (all ages five and below) we offered the attendant multiple solutions we offered to give her cash we offered to go online and buy entrance tickets equivalent to the amount of the train ride for all of us……anything just to be able to ride the train. we were all there with multiple strollers and very small children and they seriously held the train because no one could buy tickets and made us send a party member to the front of the zoo to get tickets from another location and then run back to ride the train I just think it was a much better way to accommodate us all. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t take our credit card over the phone or hold our credit card and let us go ahead and ride the train etc. we offered all of those solutions and were turned down. It was extremely hot and we had to wait over 45 minutes to get tickets.
Previously sponsored exhibit’s and/or rides are in severe need of repair. Signs were falling over and several areas were closed. Many animals that used to be there are no longer there and the ones that are there don’t look healthy.
The Birmingham zoo was at one time one of the nicer zoos in the southeast but I wouldn’t go back currently unless they make some major changes.
S Moss
The zoo was a little disappointing due to exhibit closures, no animal shows and carousel closed. These items were not posted online, and since we are out of state we had no idea.
The lanterns were beautiful and would be worth a visit during the holidays.
The Wild Burger had decent food for an amusement park, although the soft drinks are a big rip off.
Amy Bean
A nice zoo. Not too many animals to see but very large and lots of kid activities
Sherry Abston
Great Zoo!! Took my grandbaby here and she loved it.
Chris Brubaker
Always a pleasant time at the zoo . Things have changed a lot since I was last there a. Few years ago and they are missing a few of my favorite exhibits. But for just a day to enjoy the animals and the walk in nature. It’s good
LaTerence Varnado
The zoo was really fun. They have guidelines in place to make sure the numerous visitors are safe. Plenty of various animal exhibits and interactive opportunities. We LOVED feeding the lorikeets! Some exhibits are closed off due to reasons beyond their control but it’s still a fun time!
Jus Joc
Our family Trip to the zoo was perfect timing! The weather was great, and it was not over crowded! We went during Autism Awareness Month for one of my sons! Very diverse crowd, the interaction with other families was great! Customer Service needs work. People spend their money and sometimes drive long distances. So, an Upbeat personality and good customer service is the bare minimum. The online booking experience was great and that team was very helpful! In person Staff need improvement!
Lukasz Zbylut
Excellent zoo with lots of exhibits and opportunities to come really close to cool animals. Highly recommended for kids and adults. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle.
Greg St Cyr
We really enjoyed ourselves, and our son loved it. Wasn't too crowded, and we got to see lots of great animals.
Brokk
Fairly nice zoo, My only issue is approximately 30% of the exhibits are closed, and they don't tell you that beforehand.
There is only one big cat, a Jaguar. There are no tigers despite all of the posters around Birmingham with a tiger featured prominently on it.
They do have a lion enclosure, but it's empty and overgrown.
They advertise hippos, but there are none.
And if you want to see the giraffes, you have to pay an extra charge to go see the giraffes.
The reptile house was closed, no explanation given.
Past that they did have quite a few other animals from elephants and rhinos, to many types of primates and small cats.
Definitely a place to bring kids, as they would love it regardless.
Timothy H.
The zoo was pretty nice. Takes about 2 hours to make the full walk around it. We enjoyed it but about 1/3 of the exhibits were closed or empty. Overall still a nice zoo.
Molly Kmetty
seems like really small enclosures for animals, which is better to see the animals, but doesn't necessarily mean they have a great life. a coffee shop would be a perfect addition. the bathrooms by the carousel were absolutely disgusting. I don't think I've ever been in a bathroom that bad before. doors hanging from the hinges, every toilet clogged, floors and walls have definitely not been cleaned in a very long time. bathrooms by the front were clean. food was good at the burger place, even had a few beers on tap.
Daishaun Morgan
GlowWild at the Zoo is great. The family enjoyed the experience!
Brandon Morenzoni
Well worth the visit, even though there were a lot of people. I suggest you order tickets ahead as well so you don't have wo wait in line as long.
Not every exhibit was available but we still enjoyed coming here. Will definitely be making a return trip later on.
Merrily Serota
Great zoo to visit and stay all day! It's an absolutely beautiful place to stroll along at your own leisure. The animals are well cared for and look healthy and happy. My family and I look forward to our next visit.
Kayla E.
Very pretty park, although quite a few of the exhibits are closed and about 35% of the habitats didn't have animals. Overall a good experience, just wished we saw more animals and more things were open.
Kendra Emmons
Everything was great except my husband had to leave his license with gift shop crew in order to rent the wheelchair. We understand kinda an insurance policy so you don't get you chair took. What was unprofessional was that they shut down, locked, up and we're off the zoo grounds by the time we got back to the front to leave at 5:15.We had to find a security officer to get the license. Not only that, but the reptile exhibit was closed by 4:45 and the sign to the zoo closings time was 5:00. We didn't have time to see our money's worth that's for sure.
Terry Waggoner
My wife and I really enjoyed our visit to the Birmingham zoo. Excellent place to bring your little ones. Would like to take my grandson. Very accessible, plenty of parking, and a very short walk away from the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
Maria Bailey
Glow Wild was stunningly beautiful !! A fabulous experience for our group of 6 ages 10-70. Im a member and love visiting the zoo every chance I get. This event is a must see and very well worth the price of admission ❣️❣️
Samantha Hatcher
The zoo itself is great, however, as a new mom with a baby who refuses to nurse and needs to be able to warm a bottle, hot water is way too difficult to find. I was super disappointed when I went to the nursing room and found the sink there did not provide hot water, which I had figured would be the best bet. We were finally able to find some thanks to one of the maintenance employees, who told us the only sinks that had hot water were by the monkeys. We almost had to leave early because I didn’t know how I was going to heat her bottle, and I would have missed out on time with my nieces and nephew.
Tiffany Blodgett
Beautiful zoo. It was unfortunate that we went in the winter, a good few exhibits were closed. It was 5 minutes from our hotel. Almost all of the animals were out and you cluld get relatively close. We really enjoyed it. Pro tip, the train tickets are not necessary. We've been to zoos that are really long and transportation is almost a requirement inside, this zoo is not. We spent a total of about 4 hours there and walked the whole place at a leisurely pace.
Anamaria S.
Nice facility overall! Great exhibits with thoughtful information for visitors and enrichment for the animals, a petting zoo, splash pads, a train, a merry-go-round, etc. The membership is worth it and pays for itself if you visit 3 times in a year. I love that they have an appointed nursing station, but it could be more comfortable and updated like the restrooms at the front of the zoo. There are many food areas, but I haven't eaten there so don't know about the vegetarian options. The staff is friendly and mostly practice COVID safety.
Special events like the Lantern Festival are very thoughtfully curated and fun for all ages with discounts for members.
Derrick Wentworth
The Birmingham Zoo is a great place for a lazy Sunday afternoon stroll with the family or a weekday outing with friends. We buy the yearly access pass. The evening events are always great as well. We enjoy how interactive the exhibits are.
Valerie Perry
We usually do a trip here annually with the kids during the summer or Christmas light show. Was kind of disappointed in the amount of habitats closed down or animals missing. They should definitely discount the tickets for the amount of attractions that are missing. Also food options were limited as well I guess due to season and low staffing.
James “TheNoseyNeighbor”
The animals look decently taken care of and the zoo was clean!
Robert Pastuszka
Great zoo with a lot to see. The staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time.
Chelsea Rand-Fleming
Visited this weekend with my 6 year old. It was really nice. I love the One-Way path they've made to help ensure traffic is flowing in only one direction. Nice variety of animals and saw plenty of social distancing and disinfecting taking place. The only negative thing I have to say is we weren't able to see the Hippo or Rhino due to some Brunch with Bachelors event that was happening. My daughter was pretty bummed. Also you couldn't get close to get a good look of the giraffes due to the whole area being cut off with barriers. Everything else was nice and I would recommend to anyone with small children to check out this Birmingham Zoo
Brad Moffett
Nice, well focused zoo in excellent condition. The elephant enclosure is first rate both in terms of viewability and livability for the animals. We visited on a warm Sunday in February and the crowds were small when we arrived shortly after the park opened at 0900. No lines for anything except for the train and that was only 5 minutes. Wonderful playgrounds inside the park that were a bigger attraction than the animals for our 2.5 year old. The reptile, bird and primate houses were nicely presented and we'll maintained, if smaller than you might find at other zoos. Limited food sites were open due to the season and staffing issues according to the ticket taker. By noon, the parking lot was much fuller and there was a good line waiting to buy tickets. The only downside was that the tickets were expensive, even with the military discount. And it was another $13 for the three of us to ride the small train around the park. I found the staff friendly and helpful, so all in all it was a nice family time. The carousel is now open in September, but there were a number of empty exhibits in almost every area. No explanation why.
Beth Sorrells
Very nice. Wish we had more time. Also, there is a lovely carousel, YOU HAVE TO BUY THE TICKETS AT THE FRONT. No one tells you this until you get to the carousel.
Miranda Snow
So many amazing animal interactions! A little sad to have missed the red panda as it passed away a few months ago but all the other animals are still worth the trip! During winter they also have out lanterns that are adorable. Took our family about 3 hours to walk around and take our time:)
F Hudson
My kiddos had entirely to much fun visiting the zoo. A lot of tge exhibits are closed due to COVID-19 but there was still a lot of action for them to enjoy. I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes because there is a lot if walking and bring water. The admissions line was long but moved very quickly. Tge zoo staff was very knowledgeable and assisted us when we asked. They also have tge zoo roped off so that you are only able to go in one direction to prevent everyone from roaming In various directions. My kids absolutely loved the train ride and the animals provided lots of action. We will be visiting again and you should definitely stop by.
Travis Moore
The animals were good and they had a decent amount of space to move naturally. My only complaint is that many of the attractions (playgrounds, slides, etc.) were down for repair/maintenance while we were there, which limited what my kids were able to experience.
Becka Stutts
I'm not sure why people are so petty with reviews, we are members and LOVE our zoo! We were there for the grand opening of the new train where we learned that it was a FREE GIFT from Red Diamond, so they didn't spend any money on the train or video screens. My two kids love the train and don't get distracted by the screens since they are only on every 5th row, don't want your kids to watch the screen? Pick a different seat that's easy!
And yeah some exhibits are closed or an onimals might be hard to see, but it's a zoo and animals can be unpredictable. There are tons of animals every time we go and the splash pad is great too!
Róża Przanowska
Nice zoo worth to visit even during winter. I really like the idea of light show in the evening. Glad to see such a good care of animals.
Nikhole Stennis
Fun time with my family at the Zoo Lights during the Christmas season.
Joseph Satterwhite
Went for Glow Wild event. It was a blast
Hollie Clark
Always loved the zoo, if you have a food stamp card take it with you when you do show it to the person who gives you your tickets and you will get 30.00 off they will not tell you that at the window but if you read the sign it actually says it but you have to read read the sign to see it again they will not tell you that at the window. If you have an old food stamp card use it they don't have to know if it works or not they just want to see if you have one make sure the name matches with the name on your i.d or license your welcome people
Rachel Jean
Was not impressed with this zoo. This is actually my least favorite zoo I have ever visited and I’ve been to a lot. The zoo itself is beautiful but the amount of animals is disappointing. Some of the enclosures were shut down or the animals were at the vet. Thankfully it wasn’t expensive to go and I feel like my time here was well spent.
Jay Rock
The Zoo is a great place for Family and Kids but we didn’t see many of the animals that supposed to be on display. But other than that it was ok.
Jmullally61
Fantastic Zoo with tons of interactions for little kids. The staff there are so polite and helpful as well. My kid absolutely loved it.
Jamie Epperson Suran
Nice zoo, just not a whole lot going on. Several exhibits closed. I thought it would be bigger. Masks weren’t enforced which was nice considering you’re outside majority of the time.
Andrew Wilson
Christmas lights are phenomenal. Still had elephants and ostriches out. Coffee, hot cocoa, and adult beverages. Highly recommend.
Sasquatch Travelers
Very much enjoyed this zoo, one of the top zoo's I have ever been to the elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and the lion was worth the price of admission by their selves.
Danielle O'Hara
Birmingham zoo is a cute little zoo. We were able to see all of the animals, get lunch, and ride the carousel twice in 3 hours. Playgrounds, splash pads and all animal encounters are currently closed due to covid restrictions. Everyone ages 6 and older must be masked unless eating or drinking. Make sure you check the zoo website for current covid rules for the zoo before you go. There is hand sanitizer everywhere. Our munchkin had a great time and really enjoyed running around!
Olivia Ocampo
Cool place to visit with the kids, it had a train ride.and carousel. but don't go in December or when it's cold. Most of the animals are not out to see.
Leigh Saffold
What was open was great but I'd say that 70% of the park was closed and we were still charged full price. Very disappointed and honestly, we will probably visit Montgomery zoo from now on
M Stevens
Nice Zoo they are constantly updating environments for the animals. Feeding times for the animals are around 10a and 4p. The animals are more active when it is cooler out. The zoo is also very clean, from inside the cages to outside of the cages, the walkways and the restrooms. The Cafe at the entrance has a good variety of food and snacks. I chose the veggie sub, it was delightful.
The only disappointed time we had was at the Red Diamond seal show which is at 10 and 2. About 30 adults and children waited for the 2p show and at 2p two female attendants came out from the wall and threw a couple of fish out to the seals and had one seal wave to the small crowd. The so called show was over in less than 10 minutes. No introduction, or information or anything was said over the PA system. I don't know how they can call that a show.
The train ride during Boo at the Zoo was enjoyable viewing the creative animated pirate theme characters.
Emily Smith
We went during COVID-19 so all the indoor displays were closed. The animals did not appear to be in excellent condition compared to the Birmingham safari we went to. There coats weren't as good and they seemed a bit scrawny in comparison. They water environments seemed to have q lot of algae. I loved the flamingo display. It is a bit expensive and the only reason I could go was because they had free weekend for military and veterans.
William King
The Birmingham Zoo is awesome for kids, families, and anybody who wants to get a great view of lots of really cool animals. Check it out and take the whole family. My two grandchildren invited my wife and I the last time they went and we had a blast. Close by, inexpensive, and well run this is a great eat to spend the day. Make sure to get a chance to feed the giraffes. It costs a little extra but is is well worth it. Take a picnic lunch to save a little money and tailgate.
Brenda McCombs-Stephens
The zoo is amazing. We always wait to go until it is a special occasion like a birthday (3 adults @ $17, 2 seniors @ $14, then a free childs birthday ticket plus tax was $86.90) but for someone who wants to go often it is a great place to take small kids to spend the day.
The yearly membership is definitely the way to go if you want to visit often...
1 adult. $60
2 adults. $90
Family(2 adults and up to 6 kids). $140
Plus with the membership you can customize it and get really great discounts.
Amanda Owens
I grew up visiting this zoo and have been at least 6 times over my childhood, but it's been many years since my last visit.
Today I took my 5 year old and we had an amazing time! The changes are awesome! We loved feeding the giraffes and lorikeets. The restaurant near the elephant area was fantastic (wild side fries were the BEST).
This was an excellent experience and half-priced Tuesday was a very pleasant surprise! I rolled our savings into 2 adventure bands.
Sean Isaacs
Pretty cool zoo. Several exhibits, most of the animals were active. That was the best part. My kids loved the rides, and there were a lot of them. We will definitely be back!
Bailee Hollis
So much fun! I love the zoo and during off season, it's not as packed and a lot easier to walk around without bumping into people. Definitely a great time!
Thomas Newhall
Really nice zoo even with the current construction. We went early and the animals were up and active. We really liked the giraffes and the gigantic elephant. The train is super cool because it goes around the whole zoo! Our little one had a blast and we did too. Can't wait until the construction is completed!
Craig Taylor
Wonderful zoo with a great variety of animals. Very good Covid-19 protocols in place. A great visit as well as a safe one. Absolutely recommend a visit.
Chelsey Perkins
Everything was nice and clean, however, I would not recommend going on a Sunday. The carousel was closed, most of the little buildings were closed. Animals were up, animal enclosures were closed.
Ivan (Van aka LoranTheShaman)
Masks are no longer required. Just strongly suggested.
LOVE the new entrance and THEY HAVE DOLE WHIPS!!!
The souvenir cup is poorly made. Top does not snap or screw on, it can easily blow away.
Erin Walton
UPDATE: March 2018
I returned to the zoo and was pleasantly surprised with the updates! We again happened to go on a rainy afternoon, but the grounds were maintained much better this visit. We were able to see displays, and we didn’t run into puddles that present obstacles to the walkways. Many indoor exhibits had additional murals and color. I was very pleased to see progress!
We went on an afternoon after some storms came through. There were few people and little crowds there which was nice, however, other aspects of a rainy day at the zoo were very lacking. Many of the buildings had water on the floors, improper draining flooded many pathways, and many exhibits had condensation that disabled viewing. While there is a nice selection of animals, I feel that the zoo is very outdated with many of their displays and habitats. The boardwalk for the Alabama wildlife exhibit was slick after the rain, making it a safety hazard. There is a lot of construction going on, so hopefully this will be changed post-renovation.
Jacob Cothren
This zoo does it the right way. There are plenty of different animals, abundant food/drink/ snack options, and lots of places to rest or let the little ones play for a while. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Also, Tuesdays are half price admission days so it’s a bargain to boot.
Cello Pam
Beautiful grounds. Most of the animals have really nice enclosures. Lunch was fairly good, but really expensive. There were several air conditioned buildings, which was great in August. I enjoyed the personal mini bios of each animal. I'd go again!
Amanda D'Agostino Budyach
This zoo has a lot of potential but due to COVID all the good stuff is currently closed. Also, for the moment the are requiring you wear a mask. Be sure to bring your own or they will charge you $10 per person to get one from them.
Lakeysha B
We had a blast at their Summer Half Price Day. The kid enjoyed the splash pad, butterfly house, farm animal, monkeys, rhinos and so much more. The Zoo is well shaded so even though it is hot it is not unbearable.
DeShaie Hart
Great zoo! The animals were all visible and up close. We had a great time! I would highly recommend buying the extra ticket (small fee) to get to feed the giraffes! The kiddos loved it and we got the opportunity for some great photos!
Jessica Michl
Very nice zoo, very friendly staff, fun activities for the family. We stopped with our boys, 2.5 and 5 years old, on our way home from vacation. They had a pretty nice selection of animals, and they are obviously trying to improve the facilities. Our favorite part was probably the train ride!
Rachel Callahan
The Birmingham Zoo has a great selection of animals and a large land area that feels like you definitely get your visit’s worth. Tuesdays are half price and a great day to go. If you go more than a couple times a year, though, it’s worth it to buy a membership.
Marcel Gutierrez
Great relaxing place to see animals, a few interesting ones(birds, monkeys,Lorikeets Encouter and of course the Seal show) great upgrades and improvements have been made over the last couple years and current and future project are in the works but it is a little over priced at $19 and $14 for adults and kids in my opinion but checking out, you won't be disappointed (atleast the first time you won't)
Heather Ray
We had a wonderful time just like always! And were excited to see all the new animals they are making room for! It's well staffed everyone is always so friendly and they keep the place in excellent condition very clean even down to the bathrooms! And the burgers were probably the best burgers I've ever ate!
Star Foos
Beautiful Zoo. We really enjoyed our trip. The grounds are amazing, and the animals were great.
Iam Shalakemia
Such a treat !!!!!! I'm 40 and had a great time.
florence prickett
I wanted to love this zoo, but I didn't. Maybe I'm used to larger zoos with more animals. If you're going to the zoo for the first time, you'll probably be impressed. However, I grew up in the Chicagoland area, so I'm accustomed to amazing zoos with lots of animals and so much to do! There was no gorillas and the big cats were...well there were hardly any. They do have lots of beautiful birds though! If you're a bird lover...check it out! Oh! And the food was pretty good.
Bonnie Robbins
This zoo is pretty big, but I feel like I did a lot of walking without seeing much. Birds, birds and more birds. The train ride needs to be updated, you dont really see anything at all on the boring ride through the trees. I'm really glad we went on half price Tuesday. My son did enjoy the mini splash pad.
brandi bost
The kids really enjoyed the lights, as did the mom's! (Though we also appreciated the hot cider & peppermint schnapps. ) haha.
It was a very clean, peaceful, family atmosphere and the lanterns were absolutely beautiful!
Robert Evans
We hadn't been to the zoo in several years. A lot had changed for the better since our last visit. We will not wait so long before we go back this time.
Lance Easterwood
The zoo was clean and well kept. The kids really enjoyed seeing the different animals, riding the train and the carousel.
Chrystal Freeman
The Birmingham Zoo has come a long way and still has a ways to go. I enjoy coming here to see the improvements and newly designed animal enclosures. I do wish they included more information about the specific animals they have. I'd love to know their names and more about their origins.
Cameron Parker
I absolutely loved coming here as a child and am proud to be bringing my little adventurer here all the years later. Have always been on point with presentation, cleanliness, keeping relative and educational content and a safe environment for toddlers to Adults alike. And the Zoo-Light Safari is a must during the Christmas holidays. I've taken my little boy (3) years in a row! They really deck the zoo put and go the extra mile to make it a mystical place to be for the children.
Jennifer Wilson
We had a good time though there weren't as many animal exhibits as I'd expected based on other Zoo's I've visited in the past. Still had a great day with my son and an enjoyable field trip overall.
Living Good
I truly enjoyed my veterans day gift from the Bham Zoo! My son and I enjoyed every detail and the atmosphere was positive.
glpolli1
Lot of construction going on right now. A couple areas closed, son it made it even smaller. A lot of felines! I did the train ride thinking you could see some of the animals from the "back" like others zoos, but no, nothing special. This is not the worst zoo, but not the best. The red panda is amazing!! His bright color was really surprising for me.
Eric Williams
The layout of the zoo was pretty cool. They put a lot of time and money in recent renovation. However, there were lots of exhibits in construction or just empty because of the colder climate. I completely understand the reason, but I wish they warned us before we bought the tickets. I would love to visit in the summer to see how the zoo does when everything is operational. The bathrooms are super clean. Also for guests, skip the train. All we seen was an elephant, which could have been visited on foot.
Nicole Wilson
Nice clean zoo! Loved the water pad to keep the kids cool! Offering camel rides and feeding Giraffes is awesome. Don't think admition should be as high as it is and to have to pay additional for train, (only has one stop) Carousel and slide. It also would have been nice to know that my 2 and a 1/2 year old would not have been able to ride the slide because you have to be four an up before we bought the ride wristband. And then to do any extras like camel riding and giraffe feeding that's another separate additional charge from the ride wristband. I'm from st Louis and our zoo is MUCH bigger. Admission is free and then for a reasonable price (like the price of your admition here) you get a wristband and that lets you ride the train (multiple stops all over) pet sting rays, see a sea lion show, ride a carousel and getting into the children's zoo.
Samuel Segal
The Birmingham Zoo is considerably small compared to other cities ears it is a wonderful experience. They are currently going through renovations to their entrance and have a new experience being built. I highly recommend feeding the parakeets very inexpensive to do so.
Helena Duty
Have really enjoyed this zoo and we recently went to their holiday lights event and loved it.
Beatriz Puche
We got the annual pass for the whole family and it was a great decision. They have events year round like the spook at the zoo in Halloween, Christmas lights, the Valentine's day event... It may not be the most spectacular zoo I've visited, but it sure works hard to be interesting and that makes it a great place to visit.
Jason (Biscuittoes)
The Birmingham Zoo has gone through many changes over the past 10-15 years. Most of the changes are good, but prices have increased. Concessions are expensive. The later in the day that you go the more crowded and hot it gets.
Matt Crisafulli
Our family had a great time, they are under construction to expand the front area, which made it a little congested at times. The animals were out and showing off. Great selection of various types of cats, primates, reptiles, birds, and other animals. All of the staff we talked to were friendly and helpful. The animals seemed to be very happy and well cared for. And in turn made my kids excited. I am glad we bought the family membership pass because we will be going back!
Alex Fieser
I was not prepared for the wide variety of exotic and beautiful birds this zoo has! It is also deceptively small. I recommend at least four hours to properly see it all. Absolutely worth a visit.
Ariel Zelada
My Wife and I got the pass a year ago and it was well worth it. The staff are amazing and super friendly. We made it a thing to go every Friday and Saturday which were our days off and it was amazing. The animals are well taken care of with ample space except the vulture which is my only nitpick. He/she needs a slightly bigger enclosure.
Olga Delgado
My family & I had a great time at the Birmingham Zoo. Everyone had their mask on, plenty of sanitizer stations & everyone was respectful in keeping distance.
Steve Brantley
Slightly disappointing. Many animals were not on display or were under veterinary care. Price gouging on food and drinks is worse than at movie theaters. $4 for a 20oz soda.
Laurie Beth Kesterson
Glow Wild was awesome, but I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid the long line. The train ride to see the whole zoo was worth it as well
Fred
Who doesn't like going to the zoo? The prices of certain things are a bit outrageous but it's fun .
Tracy Pittman
Loved our visit. Zoo looks great but eat before you go. Prices of food and drinks are crazy. I was free to get in because my sister in law is a member. So she got my daughter and I in. If you go a lot I recommend becoming one. She goes a lot and can get her family in plus bring guest. She also gets deals on other zoos. She also had coupons for other things inside the park.
Chip G
I had a wonderful time visiting the zoo for the first time. I had a perfect evening enjoying the holiday lights. I can't wait to see this place during the day!
Anna Owens
We have a great zoo. The staff is always friendly, exhibits are well maintained and a wide variety of animals to learn about. The zoo is under renovation to create an even more amazing experience. Membership is something I recommend it is very afforddable and comes with tons of perks.
Barry Brown
One of my favorite Zoo's. This is a medium size zoo in the middle of mountain brook AL. Admission is $17.00 with Tuesday's bieng half off @ $8.50 :-) . The Birmingham Zoo has a small children's zoo but 2 neat splash pads for kids to cool down. Shaded well with a good variety of animals. The zoo is growing. There is an Asian exhibit coming soon.
Karen Elise
I’ve been coming to this zoo for YEARS! I love all the wine events and community events that they have. It’s my go to Plan when out of town family comes to visit!
Alezandra Neely
BEST ZOO EVER they have so many events you can do like riding a camel and other thing, but I am not completely sure what the other things were because we came a little to late in the day to do some of them, I would say choose the day you come wisely because some of the animal will me sleep, it does get pretty hot out there so make sure you say hydrated but other then that it’s a pretty fantastic place to go
Hannah Filgo
We loved it! The kids had so much fun! We even got year memberships.
Kitten Cookie
Great place but looks like its starting to go downhill very fast, places that were water have absolutely none in habitats. But its still a great place to and have a nice day out
Tara Parker
Theres a lot of construction going on.. once again the train ride was awful. Our conductor didn't say anything the entire ride! Overall my kids enjoyed the animals they got to see from us walking around the zoo. My daughter was so excited! (Shes 2) I didn't like all the menu changes in the cafe.. they took away the bbq nachos and that was one of my reasons for going! Ha! They did enjoy the slide and the sea lion show.
Cheryl Smith
Wonderful experience!! Many animals!
Even different wild cats!!
Note: although I seen no like trash etc. All animals habitat's where dirty. All animals that had pools of water where Greenland dirty. I understand that the alligators need the slime to feel at home. But green water was everywhere!
Kyle Davis
Little pricey but well laid out. Perfect if you need to burn an hr or 2. The botanical gardens are very close. So it turns into 2 birds 1 stone
Steph Moon
Awesome time really looking forward to going back soon. Sad to say that we adults enjoyed it as much, maybe more, than the kid did.
Miguel Diaz-Lucier
After going to the San Diego Zoo and Sacramento Zoo, I felt that there was great potential for this zoo, but a lot of the habitats were down, missing animals. We thoroughly enjoyed the train ride! The zoo does not pick up for phone calls, which is sad.
K S
Reptile house was closed. Train was closed. Predator house had like 3 displays of the same cat. Lot of empty exhibits throughout the Zoo.
Christopher South
The zoo is amazing. In my opinion one of the best zoos in the US. Make plans to see it. Glow Wild was awesome!!!!!
Mad Recycler
We had a great visit to the Birmingham Zoo. The only issues we encountered were that the member entrance had a long line because they were signing up new members at the same time delaying existing members and they do not make it clear that to use the coupon book you have to get tickets at the main gate, which required getting back in line. Otherwise, we are super excited about the progress and the new exhibits coming soon!
Roxana Woychesin
The Zoo is so much fun for the kids seeing all the animals from the Snake's that crawl on their bellies to the Giraffe's that tower over all. Also a great place to walk.
Robert Naylor
The zoo is one of the best family outings in town. If you can try to check out the Groupon deal for the family membership deal. It's awesome and comes with wrist bands that give you unlimited rides.
snydejm
One of our favorite zoos and a good way to spend 2 hours. Understandably every exhibit cannot always be open the entire day and when we were there we didn't get to see the Primates or the sea lion but we have seen them before and we will see them next time. The price is right at $20ish for adults.
Terrence King
The Wine Festival was a great success. Some many choices it was hard to decide where to start. We will definitely be attending next year.
Lori Hook
Kids loved it 🥰 …
Kyle Flanegan
Awesome zoo for my 2 year old son! We got a membership this year from a Groupon deal and have gone once a week since we got the deal whenever we are able and he absolutely loves it. There are always new events and things for him to explore and he loves riding the train and carousel when we go, the reptile building is his other favorite area. We have been to three or four big shows and a good bit of smaller events they hold around the zoo and have fun at all of them. The zoo keepers and personnel are always very friendly and helpful if I've had any questions. I think we will certainly renew next year especially if we can find the same Groupon deal with the rides and all included.
Chris Mann
It was ok Alot of the animals were not out ...
Will C
I have grown up in the Birmingham Zoo even though a lot has changed since I was little it still is a nice place. They recently renovated the entrance of the zoo and it looks a lot nicer than it used to be. There is a lot to do in the zoo. One of the coolest things the zoo has to offer is a train system that goes around the zoo. The also have a large Africa themed area. My favorite animals in this zoo are the elephants. The zoo in general is very well maintained. Five Stars, would recommend!
Gavin McCandless
Very good zoo. If you go on tuesdays and buy your tickets online, the tickets are half priced. Mid week is the least crowded time to attend. Great fun for all!
Katryna Ann Lynn
Had a great day with the family! It was really cool to see all the animal lanterns.
Ja'Qualen & Alexandra C
Due to Covid-19, they have made guests explore using a oneway route system. For our family, it sucked because it required more walking and the route system would not have made a difference due to the few guests that day. However, we enjoyed our visit to the park. Parking and purchasing tickets were seamless, especially compared to Atlanta Zoo. We did like the cleanliness and how spacious the park is and the seasonal decorations they have.
Kristy Hicks
One of our favorite places around here to go and just hang out for the afternoon! Also, with the new entrance our Birmingham Zoo looks amazing and beautiful! We are so excited for all the new and wonderful things going on at the Birmingham Zoo!
Rona Joyner
My 1st time at the zoo and I've lived here since 2016. Everything was cool except that train ride😒. You can barely see the Giraffe do to all the rubbish growing. Then you come up on the Elephants which you can see if they are standing in plan view. The rest of the ride was all Hwy 280 and more rubbish.
Olivia Elmore
Their event, Boo at the Zoo, is so much fun!! Yes there is a huge crowd and line while waiting on your tickets, however the wait is worth it. The decorations, the music, and the lights calls for some photo opportunities my fellow photographers!! Best little adventure I've ever had for the Halloween Season 🎃👻🕸 …
Miranda Wilkes
We love the zoo so much that we get a membership every year. It’s very affordable and pays for itself quickly. They have a train and a carousel which my daughter loves. In the summer they have a splash pad which is great too. There are two places on site to grab lunch and they are actually pretty good. See the sea lion show, feed the lorikeets and don’t forget to check out the giraffes which are my personal favorite. You can also ride a camel during the warmer months. I almost forgot... there is a playground area, and a farm animal petting area!
kim lovell
It was really clean, there were not as many animals as I had hoped for. The volunteers were great. They were as helpful as they could be. We took the train ride and I rode the camel. The camel ride was mostly so I can tell my grandkids that I rode one but it was about like a grocery store ride. The man who held the rein did answer my questions but offered no more than what I asked. I would probably go again if it came up .
Michael Cork
It seems to be under constant improvements these days... Making some repairs to the entrance currentky, which has created some traffic issues... But the recent changes before look great! You can easily see the difference in the newer houses and the aging houses... Which I'm sure will be improved on later... But they seem to be 9n the right track with thier plan...
Ashley Robinson
A lot of animal exhibits were closed for various reasons. None of the extra activities were open...none. Was fun just felt like we had a half experience.
Wes Wilks
Animals looked healthy but not enough space. Especially the birds, looked sad. Also reptiles if they just stay In a aquarium. Sad. But overall experience was good.
Annamarie Wallace
Love this place bc they really care for their animals. They are always having fun events like the awesome Dino Exhibit & Pikazoo and that's to only name a few! Easy to find thanks to plenty of signs. Great for all ages!
Jessica G
This zoo is a hidden gem in Birmingham! There is a great variety of animals, large nice enclosures, interactive play grounds for kids, and several animal encounters. After our first visit we became members.
summer bolinger
It's nice a spacious but the one thing I always look forward to they just totally got rid of which is the gorilla so I was bummed out and then the tiger was gone. But the kids loved it. And it's very pricey now that they make u pay for every little thing.
Samantha Gee
Love this zoo! Been here twice. It’s the perfect size for a few hour exploration. There’s lots of things to do for people of all ages.
A'Donna (Sunshine)
The new entrance is currently under construction. They have zip lines but it wasn't open yet. Looks like they have a few new exhibits coming in the near future to fill alot of empty spaces
Luke Searcy
We love our zoo! I have been coming here my whole life, and now enjoy bringing my son here with me. A nice place to spend a few hours.
LC Vana
I wish they would bring back Zoo Boo for Halloween, but the zoo is nice and has lots of animals and plenty of information on them. Always enjoy it.
Darilyn Daire
It was a cold day. A lot of the animals weren't outside to see.. Disappointedly the Train wasn't working. We ended up leaving before seeing everything. Maybe next time.
James Earp
Who doesn't like the zoo? They had plenty for kids to do, a variety of exhibits, and Halloween decorations up. We had a good time
Kenny Nichols
Great family atmosphere. Can't wait to see the upcoming animals.
Kevin B
The zoo is fine, could use more exhibits though. We went on a Saturday and for some reason the only restaurant on the grounds was closed. What's up with the big slide???
Parker Sorensen
Fun with the kids! Kids especially loved feeding the giraffes! Staff was friendly and the zoo setup was nice.
Lucas Wyckoff
Great! Some exhibits still closed due to Covid which I think is ridiculous, BUT still had a blast with my daughter.
Jessica Key
Very nice place. The most well maintained and groomed animals I've seen at any zoo, and I've been to many.
Molly Waddell
They were doing ALOT of construction so there was alot of detours through the zoo. The train was also closed, and most of the windows to the enclosures were dirty. But my child had fun. All in all it could of been better for the price.
Dee Smith
Nice place to visit with your family and friends. There was limited eateries. Lemonade stands they were available. There are walking trails and trolley train for viewing. 🦁, 🦓, 🐐, 🐢, 🐠, Ostriches, 🐓,🦦,🐝,🦌,🐘,🦊,🦉,🦃, to see. On this day the animals were a little too laid back for me. Many visitors were not following the posted guidelines to showing care for everyone. Children and babies enjoying the outing at the children's animal park. Ample parking lot.
Sheree Lewis
Great place for the family or relaxing, though they are remodeling a lot of areas for improvement its very nice. Food at wild burgers in the African trails is pretty good too.
Marietta Franklin
It was such a great day trip for our family of 5. We homeschool so it was awesome to see a few baby additions at the zoo
Courtney Evans
I enjoyed my trip to the zoo. Got lots of good photos. Theres a wide variety of animals and birds. They have made a good many improvements to the zoo lately. A new enterance is in process.
Chris Montgomery
We absolutely love Birmingham Zoo. It's perfect for the kiddos and has something for everyone. Prices are reasonable. Admission is average, souvenirs are expensive, animal encounters are inexpensive. Altogether, a group of three can spend as little as $35 or up for several hours of fun. Or you can go all out and spend a fortune, knowing that at least some of that money is going to improvements. They're always improving everything at the zoo :)
Ju Mc
Nice, clean, welcoming, and well-kept environment. Unfortunately many of the animals were not on display which hampered the experience but only marginally.
CJ Singleton
Always a pleasure visiting this wonderful zoo. Animals are always in very good health. This particular zoo is always doing there best to expand & treat there animals with the best of care. For Pokemon Go players this Zoo acts as a literal Safari Zone. BHam Zoo bolsters a whopping 20+ Pokestops & is home to 3+ Pokemon Gyms. Be sure to catch the Zoo during holidays for events such as: ZooLight Safari, Boo at the Zoo, Trails of Africa, & Dino Rampage. Definitely a family fun adventure for all.
Jonathan Jones
Really enjoy bringing my kids to see the animals. The $3 coke and water is a little crazy and the refillable cup is $6 ($1.50 a refill) but other than that we really enjoy it!
Jen P
We always love hitting up The Birmingham Zoo! Tons of animals were out and we were excited to find out they'll be finished remodeling the entrance around May this year!
Tim Lessard
Two baby elephants locking horns and playing. Priceless! Howler monkeys mimicking sounds Hilarious! Fun day!
Tiffany Marshall-Grubbs
My family and I had a great time. The only issue was the women's bathroom....it was filthy and none of the stalls had tissue. Some people have no regards for other's property.
Justin Mattson
The kids love this place and i like taking them. If you can time it right the seal training is fun to watch. The kids are amazed no matter how many times they’ve seen it. If you go more than twice in a year the membership is worth it plus you get some perks that go along with it. My only complaint would be that the snacks are a little over priced so I’d recommend bringing your own.
Sara Hardin
It was nice, pretty small though. There's alot of kids activities going on! Animals are secondary to entertainment in my opinion!
David Leach
This is a good trip for your family to get out of the house. However, a lot of the animals were missing.
JoHanna Lopez
Great zoo. Loved the giraffe encounter. My children had a blast. They even let my 1 year old feed the giraffes.
clint glossup
Beautiful day for educational fun. The animals seem very well cared for with plenty of room to roam. Will definitely return.
Tanner Stafford
Zoo is clean and well maintained. Great place to take the kids if you're visiting BHAM.
Erin Peters
So much fun! We bought the activity passes this time so we could ride the carousel and train as much as we liked, and go as many times down the slide as we wanted, plus we got to feed the giraffes and the lorikeets, and ride the camels. Can't wait to see the finished new front building.
Mitchell Hewell
We've got s family season pass. It's worth it. The zoo is always a great trip everytime we go.
Stephanie
My family and I had a blast a little construction was going on but all in all we had a great time
Andrew Carey
We had a blast ! My daughter (3yo) absolutely adores the animals. We plan on going at least once every 3 months.
Ray Suggs
Overpriced for the experience. Seemed overgrown in in need of maintenance. St Louis Zoo is free and way better. Or even closer and better, visit the Montgomery Zoo.
Lisa Getts-Folsom
The burgers at lunch were very good. Enjoyed all the animals. Will return!
Tameka Canady
Glow wild is a must. The light displays are beautiful and the Christmas decor is heart filling.
Oscar Nuñez
Limited number of unique animals (would have liked to have seen a panda), but still a decent place to go if your family has never been to a zoo before.
Melkee Kiper
Very nice! We came up from FL to take our grandson to the zoo. We rode train, saw giraffes, an elephant, lions, zebras, monkeys, birds, alligators and so much more. He loved everything, as did we. I do wish this was a smoke-free zone though. Maybe in the future?
Fel G
I want to visit and see the animals here. I wonder if they also have southern hospitality. I wanna chill with the lions and have tea.
KaPricia Miller
I feel like any child that is not a teen should get in FREE. We already pay for everything else out there and most the times the animals aren't there, VET monitored, little to no interesting attractions to say the least. A lot of walking to see nature! Could do so much better especially for the cost.
Donna Bartlett
The zoo was ok, I was expecting a little bit more. The parking was free and it was easy to find a parking spot. It can get pricey if you have a large family. Between the animals, the train, the merry-go-round, and the slide- the slide was the big hit. The camel ride was fun. The majority of the employees, though, inside the park seemed bored with their jobs.
Beatrice Amberg
Oh my - what fun at the Birmingham Zoo with feeding the giraffes and lorikeets. We had a great day and love Birmingham Zoo. Such a beautiful place to be.
Colette Muncher
I purchased 2 companion memberships as gifts. The person at booth 7 that took care of the transaction was friendly and very efficient. Thank you! I am 59. My first memories of "going to the zoo" was as a child with my grandmother. I have been going to the zoo since and in turn raised my (now adult) children on "let's go to the zoo!". No matter how young or old you are, that phrase puts a smile on your face!
Read Breeland
Glow Wild was very pretty, nicely done lights inside the fabrics. Even got to see couple of zebras out being bad at night.
Thomas Shappley
Pretty nice facility, easy to walk around. Should be a whole lot better than it is. Parking on dirt and gravel is a nightmare. Way too expensive for the lack of animals. Takes forever to get in unless you buy tickets online. Watched people get in free with their EBT cards. My kids enjoyed it so it wasn't a bad day.
Christina James
Enjoyed it very much, beautiful areas still expanding and remodeling but for a nice day outdoors I recommend going.
Belinda Alvarez
Zoo is great family place to visit, they're enlarging, food on the higher side of affordable but worth a day trip.....season passes has value for families
Thalia TV
We went to the zoo middle of the day on the Friday before spring break and it was excellent. We got through two thirds of the zoo and while it was crowded we were about to see almost everything we wanted to see. We also stopped and got food from Wild Burger. And while they did get our order wrong, it was nothing major and overall we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was great seeing the Pallas cats that the zoo had to offer considering how rare they are.
Matt Baber
Even though going through renovations, this zoo was quite entertaining. Can see animals and do most activities in about 5 hours. Giraffe feeding was set up well and moderately priced. The lady at the elephant exhibit was quite entertaining and informative. Will be an extremely nice zoo when renovations are complete.
SaintMegery15
A lot bigger than I expected, in a good way! Nice variety of animals with mostly nice, roomy exhibits. Love the setup of the zoo. Will definitely be visiting again!
Joy
Very nice summer camp the kids had a blast. My little girl was very happy she wants to go back next year
Elle TGC
A big zoo with a lot of animals acting really natural. We heard alligators doing their mating sound, saw orangutans play around, fed some lorikeets, and overall had a good time. Lots of animals that clearly get cared for very well. One of the better zoos, for sure.
Alex Grodner
The Birmingham Zoo has become a once a month (at least) visit for my son and me. At first the Birmingham Zoo made me sad because of how small it was, but I soon realized that with it being a small zoo in a smaller city we do not have to deal with large crowds or struggle to find parking. It can be a great way to spend an hour or 4 depending on what your children want to do. There are a lot of indoor areas so we even went recently when it was raining and had the whole zoo to ourselves. Also the location is pretty great, because you can head over to the Botanical gardens and make a whole day of it or head into Mountain Brook village for food and/or shopping.
Arlana Hargrave Real Estate Broker
I always enjoy the zoo! This time was no exception!!!
Charles Cooper
Vacationing in Birmingham and set aside a day for the zoo. It was a larger zoo than we expected. Great selection of animals and interesting enough for both adults and kids. The only thing about it was that it looked worn around the edges. It may have been because of the COVID shutdown but there were an awful lot of exhibits "temporarily" empty. There was a pretty good size crowd for a week day but not crowded enough to get in the way of seeing what you wanted to see. All in all enjoyable day!
Bob Maynard
Really enjoyed it! There were 2 lions today and the jaguar. Takes at least 2 or 3 hours to see most of it. Great carousel and train ride for the kids!
Raven Christian
Fantastic experience. I got the membership so my kids and I can go whenever we want. The beer is expensive but the great part is that they have it. I'd love for the selection to be expanded.
April Sprayberry
This zoo was just ok. Not many animals out. We drove over an hour to get there. The worst part was when we went to go eat at the picnic tables, we had just gotten everyone's food out on the tables, there was 18 people in our group, and we were approached by an employee saying we had to move because they were having a camp meet right there. There were no signs put up anywhere saying that area was reserved and we're told by several other employees that we could eat there. Never once was it mentioned that a meet would be going on at that particular time. We will be going back to Atlanta zoo from now on. They have more animals and is alot closer to our house.
Juanita Hernandez
I had a blast taking my baby here mostly everyone greeted us with a smile an the provided the help we needed to have a wonderful experience it was my first time but Boi was it memorable
Thomas Black
All was great.except for a few closers..other than that.on a Sunday.it was an awesome experiance
Luke Cooper (luke.creekwalker)
Totally lame they got rid of their real locomotive for a corny electric one with a bad recording of a real locomotive. Apparently it has been a problem since they got it with a lot of breakdowns (imagine that). They finally demolished the old tube ride after several years. Nothing special but at least it's not the Montgomery zoo.
Tom Barr
Although it had been several years since my last visit price of admission has skyrocketed.
Went on a Sunday morning and a few of the viewing areas were not open. Otherwise it was excellent and very pleasant.
Clarissa Johnson
Beautiful day to enjoy getter ng out and seeing the animals. Enjoyable and pleasant trip.
David Stapleton
Very clean and well maintained zoo with lots of cool animals. Even a Komodo Dragon.
Melissa Sorrelle
I havent been here in many years since my biys have gotten older. I can tell they have out alot of money into beautifying their zoo,
Keith Colwell
The renovation is coming along nicely. Even though every parking lot was over packed, the zoo itself was large enough that I never felt like any exhibit was over crowded.
Jeannine Cettell
This zoo was awesome. If you go, make sure to stop by the reptiles and look for a kid named Zach Kirk. This kid was awesome and showed me and my girlfriend around and made sure to tell us all about the cool spots. If you see this Zach, thanks again bud!!! Also was a clean zoo and all the staff I came across were nice.
Nathan Griffis
Bad timing. Cold and animals mostly inside. Not zoos fault.
Lance Martinez
No smoking inside. Alcoholic beverages inside, popcorn was fabulous. Nice place to go open walking not to crazy smooth traffic flow inside lots of animals kids loved it at the end free splash pad for kiddos.
Becca Reynolds
Went on a school field trip. Very busy of course. The rhino exhibit was not readyready. The carousel was shut down due to covid still. Most of the animals were in hiding.
Karen A
Was a nice zoo..looks like it needs updates to some of the exhibits.
David Johnson
We get a membership every year. The zoo of lights was worth every penny.
Josh Deverse
This is written by my nine year old daughter about why she loved the day we spent at the zoo. The $10 wrist band for kids is well worth the price.
Zoo keepers were friendly and I loved seeing them give the seal a kiss. There is a dung beetle in the playground. The show with the possium was fun and the African turkey bird came back out. The 100 foot slide was so fun. I also liked the carousel too. The outhouse is full of animals poop.
Karen Smith
We enjoyed our visit. Very nice zoo.
Barbara Dobyns
Some of the exhibits were closed, but it was cold. Wish still able to feed animals like we did when I was a child. That was 40+ years ago. Good memories and today I got to share with my great niece. Another good memory.
Ace
All the Exhibits wasn't Open, kids was looking for some animals lol 🤣 like where's waldo however was not the worst experience- …
Samantha A
If you're in Birmingham the zoo is a must visit! Tons of activities for kids, with a water activity center in warm months, camel rides, and rock slides. We planned to spend an hour or two here but ended up staying 4.5 hours until close without getting bored.
They have so many animals to learn about interact with as well as a lot of natural beauty you will stop just to look at.
Eric Markham
Great time!!!! Always love visiting this zoo.
Debra Hawkins
My daughter had her wedding at the Birmingham Zoo this past Saturday. Nate went beyond and above to accommodate us while still adhering to rules of Social Distancing and keeping everyone safe. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful wedding.
Zac WIlhite
We've been here multiple times. With no children, to one child, to two children. Always a fun time.
James Reed
Very enjoyable!
blake vickers
The brimingham zoo is the place to go. They have an amazing variety of animals to see. They do the alabama wildlife fedration event. You can try every type of food. Turlte, deer, duck and many more. So much fun and family friendly.
Eric Thomas
It's nice to see the continued positive improvements to the zoo I remember from childhood. Thanks to all contributors and patrons for your dedicated support.
Kevin Odom
My wife and I wanted a little us time so we went to the zoo , it was completely different from our previous trip with many upgrades and just a lot better experience
Comic Dude
This place is awesome! Is clean and the staff is very friendly! The animals looked well taken care of. And it was not crowded. There's a burger place there as well and the burgers were soo DELICIOUS!! I was not expecting the food to be so good! I was shocked! yummy food man... those burgers were and fries, and chicken tenders 5 stars!
Great job Birmingham!!
Seth Moyers
Went for the lanterns after dark and it definitely worth the price of admission.
TASHA J
Family fun! I hate the strollers where all gone. I had 2 small toddler and 2 diaper bags but overall it was ok.
Kristi West
Love it! Took my kids and granddaughter for a weekday adventure. We had fun!! Everyone was extremely friendly. We rode the train and the carousel.
Allison Banks
My daughter had such a great time!
Tiffany Conley
Me and my daughter love it at the zoo the staff are always so nice and helpful. We really love going when the Disney princesses are there.
Gage Jaggers
The exhibits were nice. However, most of the exhibits were difficult to see because of the smudged/scratched glass. Also, there was a ton of litter across the zoo and something should be done about parents changing their baby's diaper in the middle of the exhibit and discarding the diapers on the ground when there is a bathroom less than 20 feet away. My wife and I saw multiple diapers on the ground across the zoo and some lady just straight up changed her baby's diaper in the middle of the primate exhibit. Such ambiance...
Jade P
We always have a fun time when we go. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. The Zoo usually has a decent selection of things going on, too, for those that are interested. It's normally a good idea to check their site before planning a trip to see any upcoming events that may be taking place.
Ashley Elliott
This is a very clean zoo with a great collection of animals! Their dedication to conservation is priceless and I cant wait to see more of the exhibits updated!
Monica Clements
We had a great time. Weather was beautiful so most of the animals were out.
Matt Yates
Great zoo. Nice open environment with great areas to view the animals and their habitats. Staff is top notch, very nice and genuinely care about the animals.
C. B. Thuss, Jr.
Glo Wild at the Birmingham Zoo is by far one of the best light exhibits the Zoo has done! Placement of the lanterns was well thought out and the one-way trail and timed entry worked very well for social distancing and minimal crowding. Well done Birmingham Zoo!!
Joan Benson
The only thing I wasn't fond of was the paperless map. It was too much trouble. But they do have signs around the zoo to show you where you're at.
Christian S
Great for the whole family, but fair warning, it gets busy on the weekends and can be difficult to find parking so get there early
Kris Kasprzak
Do you think great zoo with a wide variety of animals I think the sea lions are my favorite
D'Andra Darwin
Our 2nd visit was better than the first. It was clean, the animals looked healthy and there were tons of kids and happy visitors. And I made a new friend.
Adeia H
This is a great place to visit for a small child. There is a limited amount of animals and make sure to wear sunscreen.
Cheryl Brecht
Great place to bring the Grandchildren. We had a wonderful time.
Eric Davis
Animals are great, but take your own food. They charged $60 for the people to eat lunch. Absolutely insane.
c POWERS
A great place for a date or to bring the kids. Or even a family gathering. We enjoyed feeding the lorakeets and the giraffes
Suzie
Super nice zoo. Lots of parking water area is most fun on a hot day for the kids.
Charles Dunn
Would of enjoyed more had several things not been open due to Covid-19.
Darlene Talton
Love seeing a variety of animals. Love riding the train. Lots new areas in the making.
Jeremy Ferrell
This zoo may be small but it is not far from home being just south of downtown Birmingham. They do have multiple rides for the kids and a Dino exhibit. From what I can tell they are renovating the main entrance and hopefully they will renovate some of the habitats some were starting to look their age.
Mike Molony
Great place for kids and adults. You can spend a day or a couple of hours and enjoy. I recommend the membership. You can come and go as you please.
Hazel Byerly
It's a great place to come bring your kids and see lots of animals.
Morgann Peters
I loved this zoo so much that we became members on our first trip - we never do that! The animals are beautifully cared for; the care and love the handlers take in doing their job is evident in every corner of the place. It is WONDERFUL. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Matt Williams
We have been zoo members for several years and they kids love it. The Africa area is their favorite. The new entrance area and park are welcome upgrades.
Tina
Christmas Zoolight. Very pretty, train ride, carousel, pic with Santa and lets not forget the hot chocolate my favorite.
James Parsons
About half the exhibits closed. Disappointed. And won't give you a retired firefighter discount without your fd id?? Told them I had to turn that stuff in...lol
Jessica Thomas
We haven't been here in probably over 3 years, love all the upgrades!
John Proctor
Good zoo both during day and during the Christmas lights thing in December.
Bambi
Enjoyed our visit a lot, but this is an expensive outing!! Entry for 2 adults, 2 srs, 1 child was almost $100. Then additional charges for train, feeding giraffes, etc. While we understand zoos are an expensive business, these prices must surely prevent a lot of families from visiting.
Krystal Garcia
It was HOT. and it was half closed down because of covid. Lots of stuff overgrown. We still had fun though. Can't wait for it to open back up to normal operations.
Jefferson LeBaron
We visited during the slow season, but it was a reasonably warm day. A few animals were still out at other facilities for the winter. There was still plenty to see though. Tuesdays are a 1/2 price, no complaints there!
Derek Goodrich
Great for a couple hours visit. Very clean and it looks like there are a lot of renovations going on. It is a smaller zoo but well worth the price of admission
Flora Johnson
We enjoyed ourselves here! The zoo accommodates special needs and abilities. You can feed the giraffes, take a train ride tour throughout the establishment, or explore various walking trails. They even have a food court if you get hungry.
I would even recommend hosting celebratory events or photo shoots here. The natural light and amazing backgrounds are perfect for any occasion. 🦁🦍🐯🐘🦒🦥🐓🐏
Ellen Bryant
We enjoyed the Christmas event Glow Wild. The zoo was decorated for the season and lots to see. No animals were available during this nightly event. Be sure to get in line to ride the train early, first thing. It's so popular that the line can take a while to board otherwise. But don't miss it!
Ashley Ravani
I am starting to get a little more disappointed each time due to at least one of the biggest best or main attractions not operating or the animal want there. This time train was broke down and it was my 2 year olds first time and he loves animals and was looking forward to male lion and train both of which were not available.
Alyssa H
This zoo has really improved since I’ve been visiting. Tons of new attractions and animals and looks like they are constantly working to expand and add more. Keep up the good work!
dani glaze
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE ZOO!!!! However, bring you a pic nic instead of eating the food sold at the zoo. It is extremely over priced, and unless the proceeds go to taking care of the animals it's not worth the money you spend on it. Other than that we ALWAYS love going to the zoo!!
Morgan Teague
We visited on a field trip here, and was very disappointed that the only animals we could see was elephants, primates, 1 jaguar, otters, flamingos, seals, and birds $40 for 2 adults is a little extreme. The burger place "wild burger" was good but 1 burger meal with an extra side of fries, a bottled water, and a small coke was $30, pricey but my husband said the burger was really good.
grace rafferty
Nice zoo, it's very cheap. The only thing I had a problem with is that all the animals were anxious. You could tell because they would be walking in circles. Made me a little uncomfortable and I hope they are being treated well. I know other zoo's that I've been to, haven't had animals pacing.
Donna Kusiak
well maintained but work in progress. animals looked well cared for
Jennifer Wilcox
It was ok Allot of the animals were not out like the tigers and the gorillas and a few others but the kids had a blast
Cathy Bishop Jones
I absolutely love this zoo! We had a great time!!!
Izz Noland
Super fun to go for Glow Wild this year with the family. I highly recommend checking it out.
Barbara Peoples
We had a great time inside the zoo everyting was good, but the security is really bad, several cars was broken into including mine. And the security gard said it was no big deal it happends all the time. SERIOUSLY yall need to put up camera in the parking lot. And better security.
Jonna Williams
My grandson got lost/wandered away from his dad. I told one person on staff and they absolutely shot straight into action. Workers came out of no where and found him in less than 15 minutes unharmed. One staff member stayed with us to make sure we stayed calm. What could have been a very bad situation was handled perfectly by the sweet people on staff. That along with the zoo, even with it under construction, was clean and very well kept.
Kristi Lohr
We visited for the Glow Wild, it was very lovely. We had a great time
adam ledbetter
It was enjoyable but lots of fun things were temporarily closed.
Luke Bryant
The Birmingham zoo is incredible! Went to a school field trip with my daughter and we had a blast! The new renovations are amazing and we will definitely be back! Love the employees and the park!
Jennifer Sutton
Not a bad value for the price, was able to see a few of the animals being fed. Seemed around 3pm we stopped seeing as many of the animals in their habitats, including the barn area being closed at 4pm?? The train ride was pretty neat, fair value. Noticed that the main gift shop doesn't have all the same things as the little one near the birds, had to back track over there to get the item I wanted. Story adventure was The Very Busy Spider.
Mallory Sheppard
We've always loved the zoo! All the renovations are really coming along and the grounds are shaping up nicely. When will it ever finish though?
I do wish more animals were on display, but I understand why some weren't with reno noise close by...I guess? They've been working on this project for years. I wish it'd finish up already! It'll be beautiful once they do! The front ponds are nice, but no animals till you strill for a while.
Besides the lack of animals on display to see, the train is also lacking. No animals to see whatsoever from the ride itself, but still, it's a fun little circle to chug around. The conductor used to stop and give the passengers animal facts and Crack punny jokes, but they haven't done that in some time either. My middle child was 3 when renos started to the front area, she's in 5th grade now and always asks if they'll finish up soon. It's the "Neverending Revamp". No fish food for a quarter anymore, can't feed giraffes either, camel rides are no longer, but I think you still still feed the flock of birds for a nice price. One large lioness, no male and no tigers. But they've got coyotes! We can see those in our backyard though so they don't really count. Where are all the big cats? Apes? There was a jaguar
...it's new enclosure looked pretty small for him too. The hippo/rhino area is also closed. Petting farm is ok. Again, we can do that in our backyard. It's fun but I always leave wishing for the old zoo I went to growing up. Enough with the presentation show, give the kids what they want. What good are fancy grounds with very little animals to keep interest
Richard Moon
This visit wasn't to the actual zoo (which I love). The Lodge at the Birmingham Zoo is an event space on the zoo property. It's beautiful and very intimate. I was there for my cousin's wedding. The wedding was outdoors as was the reception (there was seating inside the lodge also). Surrounded by trees the lodge and the grounds were perfect for this event.
Baxter Keith
Grew up in Birmingham before moving up to Virginia after highschool, and we went to the zoo all the time as kids. It's been over a decade since I've been here and I love the updates they've made and are still making. They've added plenty of shady spots for zoo goers that truly help in the Bama summer heat.
G G
Pretty good. A little over priced for the lack of animals and exhibits currently. Still worth the experience though.
Ismael Torres
A must see if you come to Birmingham. With all the improvement they're making the Birmingham Zoo is going to be like any international Zoo
Lucy Sanders
Online tickets are the best way to go for zoo light safari
Shannon Phillips
This was my first time visiting the Birmingham Zoo, and I was NOT disappointed! My MIL lives in Alabama, so my husband and I brought our almost 2 year old son to visit her. We all had a great time at the zoo, it was clean, the people were friendly, and the animals were awesome! I highly recommend it, and I can't wait to come back!!
Joe Koen
A really fun time for the family, a lot of great animals to see and for the most part a really nice facility. Some of the interior exhibits do need some serious repairs.
Amy McKenna
Such a fun day. Lots to see. Up close animals for everyone to enjoy.
Chasa Fulkerson
I love the Bham zoo! I just got a membership and it is going to be well worth it. I think we have one of the better zoos! I’m always happy to go here. The elephants, Flamingos, and Blue Duiker are my favorite things to always see!

Jeremy McDonald
This zoo was one of the best that I've been to. I loved to see that a lot of the animals, especially the larger ones had very large spacious enclosures. Also a very good variety of animals as well. It was a little confusing trying to find our way around, but that's part of the fun of a family adventure.
TheBigtood
Very cleaned zoo. Great animal habitats.
Kelsey Leslie
We are members at the Cincinnati Zoo and use the reciprocal zoo discount as often as possible. The Birmingham Zoo was a GREAT stop for us to make on a long car trip. The Zoo is in a great area with decent signage to help us navigate our way there--really easy parking layout. It was the day before Boo in the Zoo, so staffing was light, but friendly and food options were limited. The animals are great and well spread out across the beautiful grounds.
Chantale Summerville
Fun zoo! Went during October and they had really cool and festive decorations. Felt some merchandise was over priced but overall it was fun and we will be back.
Jason Thomas
The zoo itself is great. Their open dates are bad for me. I'm only ever off on Mondays and Tuesdays. For three years I was an annual member and would go once a month. Half way through the third year they stopped opening on Mondays and Tuesdays so I missed out on the rest of my membership. Since I've had to stop being a member and haven't been able to go back. Heartbroken to say the least.
bean c
Been coming here off and on sense 1975,as a kid I thought it was awesome and great to see it grow the way it has.cant wait to see more .
A Garrett
Always a good experience at the zoo! They just keep updating it and making it better and better!
Michelle Duncan
The zoo itself is lovely and very well maintained. The animals looked healthy and happy. The layout is nice and there are a lot of shady spots and seating if you need a rest or the day is warm. There are splash pads which are included in the ticket price and the kids were really enjoying those.
There were at least 5 schools on field trips this day, Earth Day, so it was crowded, which was fine. However, when you have that many pre-booked tickets, it should follow that restrooms should be stocked, hand sanitizer stations should be filled and the concessions well staffed. None of that was handled well.
Also, things like a train ride were an extra $4.50 per person. The train route is short and doesn't give a tour of the place as most such rides do. Nectar for the lorakeet aviary was $10. Beers were $10 each. A simple light appetizer meal for 4 was over $60. This was three orders of fries, three pudding cups, one 16 oz. beer and a single soda.
It's usual for concessions to be this high at places like Busch Gardens and Disney, but those are enormous parks with a ton of included activities. This is a relatively small zoo. I've never seen one that charged so much for feeding stations.
It was an overall fun day and worth a visit, but if you go, you'll want to bring food, water, hand sanitizer and wipes or tissues along and expect to triple your admission cost per person if you want to feed animals or do other activities.
