A mid sized airport, clean with a fair amount of foot traffic. Good customer service. Signage on two levels for arrivals is a little confusing. Not a lot of wait time for airplane arrivals and departures. I appreciated that even though it’s an older airport, there were choices on items to eat and it is still well maintained.

Nice airport. TSA is a little slow but it’s to be expected during the holidays. Nice staff greeted with a smile. The gate agent was a little rude but I think she was new and a little flustered. I’m giving passes and second chances all year.

The Birmingham airport is what i would consider a small-medium sized airport. I flew into this airport aroiand it was pretty empty. As i walked by the TSA area towards baggage claim, the screening section seemed adequately staffed and people seem to be moving fast. Very easy to get around. Leaving the parking deck (either in a rental or personal) is confusing. The lanes after you exit are not very well marked. If you don’t pay attention, you can end up circling the terminal. Also, it can take what seems like an eternity to get your luggage. But most of the time the people that work there are friendly and helpful. Since there only two concourses, it’s not that difficult to navigate. In 2008, the airport was renamed Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to honor the world-changing legacy of late Birmingham civil rights activist Rev. Fred Shuttlewworth. Their modernized terminal boasts free WiFi, convenient charging stations, children’s play areas, a sensory room, private nursing and meditation rooms, and a variety of renowned local and national restaurants. including: Red Mountain Grill, Birmingham Brewhouse, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, and more. BHM is home to four airlines, servicing over 100 daily flights to 15 cities for more than 3 million passengers: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.

For an international airport it’s very small but quite convenient. If you fly Delta most everything will be routed through Atlanta. As for the airport it’s very clean and quiet. Easy to navigate and TSA has always been friendly. During peak hours it can bog down at TSA but off peak hours it moves really quickly.

This is a small airport and it’s not very busy. It’s actually cute. That means you can get through check in and security pretty quickly. The staff has southern hospitality which is expected and will be glad to assist you. Finding your way around here is very easy. Bathrooms are clean and good selection of food. We took my Nephew out to see if he really wanted to become a pilot, He said he really like experience. One of The instructor name is Bailey, he is a young but knowledgeable instructor, He is very friendly and I believe you can ask him all the questions you want answered he is willing to help you understand. If you are wanting to become a pilot, I would suggest going here, if your in the area, and get a 1 hour session.

I love this airport. The staff here was very friendly and welcoming. Very clean. Traffic was a breeze. I’m a person with no sense of direction so this airport was excellent for me. It wasn’t over crowded at all. My daughter was flying to Vegas…. First flight!! Staff was very helpful with her and answered all questions she had plus gave us tips or future flights. I will be returning here for all flights as much as possible.

The airport itself is nice. They did a lot of work to jazz it up for the world games. Should have already been nice like that. Park at your own risk. Our vehicle was hit while we were gone. No help from airport. Birmingham PD didn’t want to write a report. What’s the purpose of cameras for security if you don’t use the to SECURE. Will drive to Atlanta next trip.

Rather small, clean airport. Staff is friendly enough, but the Uber service here is terrible & not any cheaper than a taxi unless you have a trip that's over 40 or 50 miles. One time I waited over 25 minutes just for the driver to stop a mile away from the airport & cancel the trip. After a few average taxi trips I've stuck with Brian that drives the dodge charger. Get his number & call or text him a day or two before you arrive & he'll be there waiting on you. He got me to Hyatt Regency & Aloft quickly & with great customer service.

I've flown into and out of this airport more times than I can count. It is very well maintained and one of the better small airports I've been in. There aren't many options for food and drink, but there are a few. The airport is small enough to walk from one end to the other in less than 15 minutes, so connecting flights are never a concern.

The rental car center is close and a breeze. No buses or long walks to get there like other airports. Decent airport but not a lot of good food options or places to charge phone. The bathroom is super gross. I was there with delays for hours and I feel they were never clean. Not somewhere you would want to get struck because it’s basic ( which is okay sometimes) and nothing to really eat or do. My main complaint was the bathroom.

My flight arrival was delayed. Arrived at 9:45pm. We sat waiting for a team to bring us to the gate. Once we deplaned, our carry-on luggage which was checked at the gate from our departure city, we were told to pick up at terminal F...there isn't a terminal F!! An AA personnel told us to go to 4. It took nearly 30 minutes for our luggage to finally arrive. Airport appears nice and clean. Nothing was open as I walked from my gate to luggage area.

They have made some nice improvements here over the last decade. BHM is a very easy airport to get in and out of. Not many flights so it never seems hectic with plenty of space, almost peaceful for an airport.

So far, so good. Been here for about 2 hours now- the bathrooms are always clean, no bad smells, good breakfast. The announcements are 11/10 quality though could be a bit louder.. I love this place :) Also, if any of the employees read this, I love the little plant wall you guys have, it's so creative and fancy

I'm local to BHM and have been using this airport for years (mostly Delta) and never had any issues. Despite it being called 'international', it's more of a regional airport but looks more modern than your typical regional airport. Long-term parking is great and not too pricey. Spots can be scarce during peak times (i.e. thanksgiving, christmas etc), worst case is you park really far away from the gates. Checking in at the gates (Delta) can be hit/miss, sometimes there are a lot of agents, sometimes just one, so plan accordingly and arrive early if you don't want to miss your flight. The same thing applies to TSA. Lots of places to chill and wait for your flight, it's wide & airy.

Not a very people friendly airport. I was hoping to come in and be able to wait on my daughters flight and possibly read the paper or grab a bagel or see a shop…none of that! Literally have to be “boarding a flight and behind the gate” to see anything other then some escalators and windows. Not my favorite airport 🤷🏻‍♀️ But if you don’t mind doing nothing but watching cars drive thru a breezeway, it could be your thing😁

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is a great small airport. The number one most important thing is that it's very clean, they also have several dining and shopping options, you can purchase Auburn & Alabama souvenirs and plug ins for your devices. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport has a really cool wall covered with live plants/ferns/etc., nice decor and a wall w/ flat screen tvs. It all makes for a good airport experience which is harder and harder to find and experience these days.

I grew up in the Baltimore-DC area, and am used to the hellscape that is TSA and baggage check in that area. BHM is such a breath of fresh air in comparison. Unless it's holiday time, it never takes more than 30 minutes to get through baggage check and TSA, everyone is super nice, and the airport is clean. Highly recommend, and big thank you to everyone who works here.

This is a really well-run airport. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly. The bathrooms were clean, and the waiting areas had a lot of seats. There were also some interesting historical exhibits to look at to kill the time. My only complaint is that the rental car agencies are hidden away in a practically unmarked building outside of the main terminal. I had to ask someone where it was located.

With the athletes returning home to their native countries, lots of BIG bags, international papers, complicated connections and foreign languages. Nice experience. They have a free cell phone parking lot for you to wait for flights coming in. No fee to wait. They have a small flight board that provides the status of the flights. When our party arrives, we can text our party and drive up to pick her up.

My sister and I went to the Delta counter to change her flight due to a family matter. The young ladies seemed less interested in assisting her. We walked over to Southwest and the young lady found us a cheaper flight flying with Delta with ease. Her personality was delightful. That's why I fly SWA!! TY for your assistance and professionalism considering my sister still flew with Delta. Kudos to your excellence as well to it being time to close.

I mean it's a great place to visit there's lots of things to do in Birmingham just make sure you follow the normal precautions that any tourists would when they go to a new place.

Parking garage is very dated. Only 6'8" clearance which was BARELY enough for my truck. The parking garage is also lacking adequate directional signage. For Monday morning flights, I suggest arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight.

Check-in was easy and straightforward. However, the prices for drinks and food are pretty exhorbitant. They get away with this because of TSA restrictions. TSA agents were polite. Overall, a positive experience!

Airport was clean, our family flew Southwest Airlines for this trip. The Southwest staff were helpful during a busy check in time with a large school group also checking in. We all got checked in and bags checked quickly and without issue. TSA staff were helpful getting myself and daughter with special medical needs through security check with little trouble. This coming from a guy that doesn't care much for intrusive personal searches. The TSA staff maintained good communication with customers and did the job professionally.

This a perfect sized airport. It has all you need Jim n Nicks, Chick-fil-A and Startbucks. There is only one incredibly frustrating thing and that’s bag claim! Be prepared to die a very slow death waiting.

Not a lot of food options. It was difficult to navigate the parking deck on foot. Delayed flight because half the passengers' bags were "missing". Fortunately, they were recovered within half an hour. Friendly and helpful, admittedly small, staff. Overall, positive experience.

I had used Atlanta airport for a while now, but a friend wanted to use Birmingham. I was out of touch with where to go and such but arrived at 4:10 in the morning. I was told to move my car, and I asked where to park. A courteous police officer showed me exactly where to go and then I lost my way getting back to the terminal. I walked around in the early morning and followed a fellow flyer to the correct location, but it was safe and carefully watched for early passengers and plenty of people are willing to help you. It is a good airport.

Cute little airport. Always very very clean. It's also got a lot of art which I appreciate. Look out for the dog with the fishing pole and the full wall of vegetation, those are my favorite parts. Unfortunately there's no lounges in this airport, but there's some interesting food options including Vulcan Gin owned by Charles Barkley and Birmingham brewhouse with a selection of craft beer.

Great small airport easy to get around . TSA usually isn't that busy an hour before flight is enough time to get to your gate. The bats are also very good if you need a snack or drink

Delta staff did an excellent job on 10/10/20. Atlanta flights got diverted due to weather. The staff was overwhelmed with irate passengers. They handled everything very professionally. They took most of our flight to the hotel to leave at 8am the next day. We stayed at the airport not wanting to miss the flight. At midnight the staff put us on a plane to Atlanta and changed our connecting flight to an earlier one. Could not be happier. My hat is off to you all what a great job. Oh yeah the young lady that helped us on to the flight had been there for 15 hours and was still very polite.

I quite enjoy this airport. It has a small regional feel with quick and efficient security lines. The staff are friendly and polite and the airport generally runs very well. They have a couple of sandwich shops, a Starbucks, and a BBQ joint. The only complaint is that there is only a single spot to grab real food --the BBQ join which can get quite busy. Their rental cars are connected directly to the airport just a walk across the street which is awesome, though they don't do walk-up and drive off; you need to visit the kiosk. Though the review may sound negative, it really has always been a great experience here, and certainly an airport I don't mind flying into.

I’m leaving this review in hopes to help future travelers, assuming the management makes some changes. The rental car setup has no signs whatsoever once you enter the garage, you just have to make sure to turn right once you get into the parking garage to find the desks inside a small corridor. Security and such was fine, and it looks mostly updated, but the lack of signage is an issue. I saw several people a bit confused.

I have flown out of here countless times and have always had a great experience, even in the early hours of the morning. Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is more regional than its name let's on, but it's rather nice and fairly large, accomodating all major airlines alongside a few smaller low-cost-carriers. Going through security is never fun, but the CLEAR and TSA folks who work here are very fast and are very patient with me as a blind gentleman. After passing through them, you'll find that the airport has a handful of restaurants and shops to choose from, including The Great American Bagel, Chick-fil-A, and a few others. There used to be a Jim-N-Nicks, but COVID-19 closed that down (RIP). On a side note, the airport prospects, the folks who guide those with disabilities to their destinations, have all been very helpful and friendly in getting me to where needs going. Huge thanks to them for what they do, day and night. I've been to lots of places, from SFO to LAX to DFW to ORD to CLT and everywhere in between, but there's really no place like home and BHM will always have a special charm to it that other airports just can't pull off.

Love it. It's a small airport so food options aren't plentiful, but it doesn't matter because it takes like 15 minutes max to get through security. Ive been able get there 45 minutes before my flight, have my bag checked (and make the flight!), get through security, then have 30 minutes to hang out or get some Jim n Nicks. Expensive to fly to and from, but it's a great little airport

Solid airport for its size. Very quick turnaround, never waited more than 10 minutes at security. 90% of the time its walking directly through in less than 1 minute. Unfortunately every Delta flight goes back through Atlanta so connectors can make trips much longer if you are a delta passenger. Still, I'll take it over driving to Atlanta any day.

When I checked in very little was checked in regards to covid requirements for traveling to Kuwait. Luckily I had everything once reaching Germany yet no one checked in Birmingham or Houston. Asked basically if I had my cpr but didn't really check to see if valid. There was not any sanitizer in 9 of the containers I tried. I informed one lady in security and she told me it wasn't her problem or job. Doesn't surprise me with only 33% vaccinated in Alabama.

Went to AVIS to pick-up rental. They only had SUVs g pickup trucks avail. I was expecting an economy car but nothing readily available. At the last min, a carolla was ready but not at the rental agency. The agent went to the lot to get the car for us. So nice & thoughtful. Thx AVIS!

Easy in and easy out....car rental counter is a challenge to negotiate, largely due to lack of clarity as to where you 'actually ' get your car. Most counters are not staffed and tracking down the alternate (aka-fasrbreak) locations are not readily visible nor close by.Be prepared to walk.

It's a great small airport to get out to the east coast and a few western options too. My biggest complaint is the hours of operation for restaurants. I fly out at 5:30 am twice a month. Half the time, I struggle to get Starbucks before the 5 am boarding. And you can pretty much forget getting regular breakfast as most food places don't open till after 6am. Then for late flights, all the places close at 7pm. The employees don't mind telling you that either. If you get in line at 6:55, they tell you no. Whatever happened to customer service??!!

Yes, there are signs that say ground transportation. But after that you are on your own. If you don't go out the right door you won't see the shuttle sign for hotel shuttles. I had trouble a few months ago when I had to come here and get a hotel shuttle and the same thing now. One shuttle guy said yeah it's hit and miss here. That's not acceptable when you have a schedule to keep. If your hotel shuttle driver doesn't get out and yell the hotel name you could miss it and have to wait another half hour.

Rented a car at Hertz feel like it's a little over priced for waiting in line for almost 2 hours and being a gold member. Didn't have time to detail car and had to drive it alot. Went to American Airlines counter to inquire about available services for my family member who has a disability and is planning to travel internationally later this month. I was assisted by a lady named Marie who gave me great pointers on how to talk with AA customer service & gave me a card with their 800 number. She educated me on terminology as 'meet and assist' & to make sure I state he is a first time flyer ! We were also able to observe TSA procedures while at the airport, which gave comfort for what could be a looming, intimidating process. The facility was neat and clean and ready for the World Games participants. We actually saw many teams arriving today 🎉

I haven't flown in a few years. But I always loved this airport. It's easy to maneuver, and the facelift/makeover really raised the bar almost as high as other airports. There are a good selection of local eats, and stores that you can purchase souvenirs from. Taxis wait out front, along with Uber drivers waiting to wisk you away to your destination. I have no complaints.

Very loud jazz music playing in the terminal- not something I want to deal with at 530 in the morning. There is no wifi and only a couple of outlets near seats. TSA line was surprisingly long at 5am but moved quickly. There's a few food options, and nothing was horribly overpriced. When I arrived early Sunday evening everything was closed. I suppose it beats having to drive to and deal with Atlanta...

I fly through this airport quite often and this morning had a less than great start when I arrived a bit more than 40 minutes before my flight. I know the airport is very small and slow, and I have always been able to get to the gate withing 10 minutes of arriving at the airport. This time I was checking a bag instead of doing a carry on only and with AA regulations you must check your bags 45 minutes before the flight is schedule to leave (I know now). Since it was right before 5:30 in the morning and I was being told that my bag could not be checked and I could not leave my bag for the next flight because of a few minutes, I was becoming more peeved by the second. After having the bag check desk help me by explaining policy and what they could do for me I was able to hop on another flight within an hour, not really giving me a major set back in time which was my fear in the first place. If it were not for Laprincess and her efforts to make sure my final destination arrival time was not excessively altered this would have been a 2 star review. Thanks for going the extra mile and not just explaining why I couldn't keep my original travel plans.

I was taking the last flight out to Orlando on 12/28/17 and checked in with TSA and the airport was practically empty. After I went to the gate I was told there would be a 2 hour delay due to weather conditions so I settled in and discovered I had misplaced my driver's license. One of the airport employees, Mr. Lavelle Travis observed my distress and asked what my problem was and he offered to search for my license last used @ TSA. In a few minutes he came back with a bright smile on his face with my license. He was so professional and so cordial. Sometimes all folks hear are the complaints but I wanted to let you know what a great employee you have in Mr. Travis.

After flying across the country and back over 2 days, I hit about 4 other airports on my travels. Birmingham really has done right by the Airport. It is comfortable, very clean, and it's always very clear where to go. Even though it is one of the bigger airports in the nation, you don't have to put up with the stress of trying to find your gate. It's all very clearly marked in black and white. Hallways are wide and restaurants are abundant and very clean. I really enjoyed my flight out of and into BHM.

This review has to do with maintenance practices, and should serve as a warning to anyone booking an important/emergency flight. Today 1/25/15, I was supposed to fly out of this airport for a family member's funeral taking place this evening. I had taken bereavement leave, booked the flight at the last minute, and arrived very early at the airport to make sure that I could make it in time. The weather was clear, lines at check in/security were short, and in general getting to the gate was easy and pleasant. The trouble began once everyone had boarded the flight. The captain got on the com to inform us that a flat spot had been found on one of the plane's tires. Here is what you need to know before booking your flight: **Birmingham-Shuttlesworth does not do it's own maintenance.** The airport hires contracted maintenance off-site. In this instance, we were told it would take AN HOUR just for maintenance crews to arrive. That's an hour PLUS however long it took to change the tire. Safety should definitely come first, no question. But when I departed the plane hoping to catch another flight, there was a massive line of over 100 displaced passengers and only two attendants to assist everyone. Other than this incident, the rest of the airport was not busy at all. Most of the gates were empty. I looked for someone, anyone, to help me. There was no one. In desperation to make it to the funeral, I got a rental car and drove to Atlanta, but missed my connection. I did not make it to the funeral this evening. When traveling long distances, there are many factors outside one's control. Weather, your health, plane condition, etc. But this was a situation that could have been avoided by a) the airport choosing to afford on-site maintenance and/or b) the airport's ability to respond when an incident like this arises. I hope that no one experiences what I had to experience today. I will think twice before flying out of Birmingham again.

I like this airport. Both departure and arrival flights are easy and stress free (at least from my experience). I particularly love the pre-recorded) male voice that talks in the intercom. He reminds me of Nat King Cole. Overall, I like my experience coming here.

This airport seems like it has been under construction forever. The remodeled main terminal has a fancy modern design and even offers free WiFi. The restaurants are clearly an attempt to offer local fare but are relatively limited.

New design is on point. Free wifi and chargers. Yeah we have a small airport, but I'm thankful that I get to wake up and realize that we aren't the crazy airport city that is Atlanta. We have managed to retain our sanity here.

Smaller airport but easy to get in and out of. Security lines were short and didn't take a long time to navigate. Nobody really enjoys going to the airport but there are many out there that are a lot worse. Given the choice, I'd fly into this airport for business again.

Good for Southwest Airlines flights. Owing to light traffic (or is it staffing) pre-TSA check limited to short peak periods. No luggage carts (?) in baggage claim. Exit from airport area (at night) requires proper subservience to contemporary navigation aids or (like myself) be prepared to drive a few unwanted miles on two-lane highways before getting back on track. Return signs were spot on.

I just wanted to share my awesome experience at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. I wanted to point out certain individuals that made it easy and enjoyable (in a field where it is mostly not enjoyed.) First of all if you have ever wondered about the ease of economy parking and shuttles....well the man that picked us up was awesome. He followed us to where we parked and he picked us up. He was very informative and made us feel comfortable....plus he had been doing this long enough to know what ?’s people have. I can’t remember his name, but he was awesome. 2nd (Southwest Counter) Miss Brandi It wasn’t busy plenty of room and the lady who checked our baggage in was wonderful. She was so nice and sweet and again made my wife and feel welcome (in an airport I know????!!!!) Security ( Miss Shakiyla, William (x-ray machine) and Brandon) I know some people get upset with security, but this was very well managed and thorough enough to make me feel safe. Guys easy way to think about security... if you get upset for no reason other than there is security....you are probably thinking about something that you yourself think is questionable to take with you. ( I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I’m saying its COULD be an inconvenience). Anyway it was very pleasant and everyone we talked with was very friendly and informative. Thanks to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

The airport it self is great the way to it the directions around it and the 1 dollar an hour is really great. I was helping a 75 year old lady who needs a wheel chair and walker. O but the T.S.A they know what they are doing but the direction to the people coming thru is chaotic. I didn't know if I needed to take off my shoes or the lady with me in the wheel chair. I had to get scanned three times and patted down and the lady was in the middle of the scanning station and in mist of it all my purse had to be searched and I didn't know where to stand or where to go. It would have some type of direction.

Never go united at this airport. They dont care that they are under staffed and take 20+ minutes to check in a single guest. They let the guest occupy the counter while trying to figure out how to check in without helping them. Tsa was pretty quick and other employees were friendly and nice but avoid united. They dont care about their customers.

It's what I would expect from an Alabama airport. Not very busy. Not very big. Not many stores. Gets you where you're going and so far has had better deals than flying out of Memphis

They just finished remodeling it a week ahead. They have some great food choices finally including BBQ and Chik-fil-a. It is also has a cleaner look and the security check point is now open and airy instead of packed up like the old location. This is a real nice change.

The edition makes it much easier to get around. Ramps make it easy to know where to go for drop off pick up or parking. Don't pay to leave your car there though, rates are exorbitant.

This airport is vibrant; It is culturally enriched; it is full of diversity. In other words, it is in an area you probably would prefer not to be in late at night unless you have a CCP. Otherwise, it is a good airport and very convenient.

I'm leaving this 5 star review for Dionne from American Airlines. My flights had been delayed last night coming in from Dallas and the next flights were two days away, she not only found me the only seat to get back home to my dogs the next day ( Dec 30th instead of the 31st.) but also was able to get me a voucher for a room in Dallas for the night. Her customer service went above and beyond and I think American Airlines should know what type of employee they have working for them in the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Thanks again Dionne!
