Reviews of Thomas Wolfe Memorial
I love this place “The Thomas Wolfe House Memorial and Museum” is
a great place to stop while in Asheville. The museum
and film are free to view but house tours are $5 plus
sales tax. The tours run every hour starting at
9:30am and the last at 4:30pm. The guided house
tour takes around 45 minutes.
The introductory film about Thomas Wolfe's life runs
about 20 minutes and provides a lot of background
information.
The Museum is also very informative. I liked the new
exhibit that showed how the house was originally
and then how it was after the first additions and the
second additions.
1 had an informative guide that provided me with a
good sense of what it was like growing up and living
in the boarding house. The house is well kept and
filed with many historical treasures.
There is a small gift shop in the museum that sells
books about Wolfe; Wolfe's books; toys; photos and
postcards.
Free parking in front of the house.
What a great surprise this tour was. The guide Tom, was one of the best tour guides, a true storyteller. Put on your must visit list when in Asheville
Interesting house tour. If you read Look Homeward Angel, it brings to life the many scenes from the book. If you haven't, it's a well preserved piece of history from the early 1900's and gives a glimpse into Asheville at that time.
Interesting stuff, very personal guided tour. The house was outstanding as you interacted with history. The video gave an excellent introduction into Wolfe's life and work. It was well worth the time we spent!
Nice museum and exhibits. The gentleman working the museum was very nice and friendly. A little disappointed that no part of the house is accessible without a guide, but understand the need to maintain control over who gains access to the property.
Wow. Kayla brought this place to life with a tour that combined deep knowledge of the boarding house and Thomas Wolfe personally with a clear passion for sharing the story of this amazing treasure. If you want to experience a taste of life in the ray 1900s... this is it.
The Thomas Wolfe Memorial Site is a wonderful place to visit. A step back in time. The home of American Literature. An authentic voice for Asheville, NC. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. An important aspect in Asheville History. Asheville is a beautiful city.
Good price for a nice tour of where Thomas Wolfe grew up and the memories that inspired his literary masterpieces. The tour is about 45 minute long. A must visit historical site while in Asheville.
The history and passion for the house and person deep from every crevice of this landmark. The people are knowledgeable and the house beautifully maintained. I would do the tour again and highly recommend it to all interested.
October 21, 2017- I and mom was first time visit tour of Thomas Wolfe Memorial house so beautiful, very old stuff, history ago. My iPad took many pictures. Enjoy around tour is great time.
It was very informative. Thomas Wolfe is ranked amongst Ernest Hemingway and F Scott Fitzgerald when it comes to American writers. They have a video you can watch before the tour, there is also an exhibit. For $5 a dossant takes you on the tour of his childhood home, which was a boarding house ran by his mother, and gives you all kinds of information about Thomas Wolfe.
A nice way to spend a rainy afternoon! Our guide really loved her job! She was informative , answering our crazy questions, it was as if she was one of the Wolfe's long lost children! Never read anything Thomas Wolfe wrote...but NOW I want to..Our guide even gave us a great tip on pizza at the Ashville Brewing company! Thank, you!
Historic house museum restored and preserved as it was when Thomas Wolfe lived there in his childhood. He went on to write ‘Look Homeward Angel’ based on when the place was a boardinghouse, his family, Asheville itself, and the various characters that came in and out of the house. A must see if you’re looking to take a pause and step back in time for a moment.
Great tour and very interesting. Tom our tour guide was excellent.
I liked that there was a free, small museum that was very informative and well designed. There was also a paid tour to go through his house.
Excellent grounds and exterior tour. The house was closed during our visit. They do have an online walking tour
The history of this place is not one to be missed. Very beautiful house for a great writer.
This tour was very informative and loved the originality of the place. It's a must see!
Great place! Very affordable. Take the guided tour, it was awesome!
You must call ahead for a reservation. Don't just show up like we did. We were lucky enough to get a same day reservation.
I visited this museum on a whim, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my vacation in the Asheville area. After watching an interesting 22-minute film about the life of Thomas Wolfe, I saw the house with a guide named Sara who provided a delightful and informative tour. Her passion for the subject matter was evident and has inspired me to read Look Homeward, Angel. The rest of the museum, with a chronology of Wolfe’s life and some of his personal effects, was also quite good. Highly recommended.
Excellent tour with knowledgeable guide for $5. Childhood home and basis for "Look Homeward Angel." About 75% original furnishings.
Cute little house! Didn’t get to go inside, but cute to see.
Love this place the rocking chairs in the front are perfect for reading books or rolling joints
Highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about North Carolina's most famous author. Guided tours of the Wolfe boarding house take place every hour and take about 40 minutes. There is also a well-curated exhibit as well as a 22-minute film on the life of Thomas Wolfe. The staff were wonderful, and we had a great time!
My daughter and I had a tour here today. David was our guide and he was wonderful. Very charming and knowledgeable. He did the tour at our pace and answered all of our questions. I would visit again. Very nice staff and exhibit. Very good value for money.
I enjoyed this place, history and guided tour.
Really nice guided tour.. Learned a lot about the author and his childhood / young adulthood. The bed and breakfast was interesting to visit.
Pretty informative place!
The Wolfe house itself is interesting and well kept with many pieces from the Wolfe family. Much of the original decor and device remains in the house, which is pleasant temperature-wise year round. Our guide was knowledgeable and seemed greatly interested in the Wolfe family and their history.
We enjoyed the museum, though I would have liked to learn more about the historical significance of the town and family. The shop was neat with Thomas Wolfe books and books about the area, time, and author.
I really enjoyed this wonderful museum! David, our guide, was totally knowledgeable about Thomas Wolfe, his works, and the history of the day. He is also very entertaining with a dry sense of humor. The exhibitions and movie, in the visitor center, are very well designed. I'd think that even folks who aren't Wolfe fans will enjoy the tour.
Our guide was one of the best guides ever. His name I don't remember but he was a young brown haired guy. He spent a lot of time making My grandson very comfortable. He colored pictures with him and he gave him a scavenger hunt book...that kept his attention.
Very interesting museum and tour. Nice introduction to mid 20th century Appalachian life as well as insights into the roots of Thomas Wolfe's writing. A well spent 2 hours.
It was a nice tour if you like old homes, and history. Dan Allen is super knowledgeable and makes the tour fun!
Didn't go inside, but the outside is acceptable to walk around.
Awesome museum, film, and tour of home. Great tour guide. Good gift shop. Art in lobby also worth seeing. Perfect!!!!
Went here on a whim, and glad that we did. My family enjoyed touring this house more than the Biltmore! Aside from *not* being squeezed between velvet ropes with countless other tourists (unlike Biltmore), our guide really brought alive the history of the house. I've never even read anything by Thomas Woolfe, and I still found it very fascinating. Highly recommend it.
One of the only museums in WNC, great place to learn about Asheville in the 1920's-30's, as well as Wolfe's life, family, and extended contributions to literature. The museum part is a great place to visit in downtown Asheville, it is free or minimal cost. The attached house is a wonderful place to take in and imagine Asheville a century ago. They've done a great job restoring it after a hellish arson a couple decades ago. The staff is knowledgeable and provides a good experience.
What’s ironic is that while he was alive Wolfe was quite reviled in his hometown of Asheville, but now it’s where he’s by far the most beloved as they keep this piece of his legacy alive. The house is very interesting, and Wolfe certainly had an interesting life, but also it’s the house of the guy who inspired lots of other more famous writers like Jack Kerouac. So this house is good for what it is, but your mileage on its subject will vary.
I read Wolfe in college, earning a BA in English. I saw the movie Genius and became interested once again! This memorial is a wonderful tribute to a great American writer, who was an intriguingly complex man. The staff is very welcoming, and have displays of Wolfe from his time in Asheville, to his writing days when he lived in the famous Chelsea Hotel in New York. The home is well preserved, with many personal relics of the family. While touring with my family, our tour guide led us through each room. The house is still very alive. Julia Wolfe, mother of Thomas, is very much still there ushering in boarders, or showing those wanting to know where he slept, for a small fee. While there, my family agreed that the house felt alive. So, imagine our surprise later that night when we took a walking tour of Haunted Asheville, and the Wolfe Memorial was our first stop! This house is a definite "must see", for the love of American Literature,
Tour guide was very knowledgable, a college graduate from UNC Asheville. Also, can buy books here.
Great place to learn about the Author and his life. The guided tour or the home was very informative.
A must see and experience this bit of history. More than a story about an author, his life journey including his family. His mother's story and business in itself was worth the tour. Please support their cause and save this historical home.
If your a Thomas Wolfe fan then you will definitely want to visit here. I went more to see the house than learn about Wolfe, but the guides made it interesting and were very knowledgeable.
If you have read Thomas Wolfe then you will get a feel of where and what he was writing in Asheville. Look Homeward Angel and You Can't Go Home Again. Some of his written works were published in the New Yorker. Visit the welcome center and then the boarding home. Period furnished.
I visited this house back in 1979. As a long time fan of his writing it was a great experience. The guide I had was excellent and quite familiar with Wolfe's history. I highly recommend a visit.
Excellent state historic site. Very nice visitor center.
Very informative tour of the Wolfe memorial. The tour or the home was very informative. The guide did a wonderful job.
This is a must stop historical site in Asheville. A lovely Victorian style home nestled into busy downtown with super dedicated and friendly staff that painstakingly ensure authenticity and honest recounts.
Historical house right in the heart of downtown Asheville. Guided tours are available. They also have self guided tours for those who want to go at their own pace.
If you have read Look Homeward Angel or You can never go home check out the writers museum.
Outstanding tour. Thank you Kayla for your great guide through the house!
A wonderful museum. You get to tour his childhood home, depicted as Dixieland in Look Homeward Angel. It's 85 percent original contents.
Interesting woman his mother was.
Great venue with great artists coming through. I love that I can get a Hop Icecream at a show! Sound quality is amazing.
Was there for a brief moment but beautiful spot relaxing quiet and relaxing
Staff was very pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed the movie and found it informative.
Great history..great writer
Was really good the guide was friendly and informative. My cousin long ago built the original house so I was glad to see it
Knowledgeable docent made the visit informative and enjoyable. More than the house you learn about Wolfe's life.
Interesting tour, recommend if looking for historical info on Thomas Wolfe, watch Genius the next day, made the Movie much more interesting.
Quite interesting to go and visit. However, if you go to the museum before you will learn everything they tell you on the tour.
The outside was fine, we got there after it had closed
Very informative guide. He had a interested life. So glad it's been reserved right in the middle of downtown Asheville.
Nice clean bathrooms for public use, not easy to find in the city. Very friendly people at the desk. I learned something for sure!
Enjoyable and affordable. I had a great time even though I never heard of the author myself. I would recommend it to others.
Excellent memorial and exhibit featuring the home of Thomas Wolfe - must see!
I've been a fan of Thomas Wolfe for years. This is my first chance to visit. Impressive!
Unfortunately it was closed, but from the outside it was awesome.. the house, the front porch, the plaque with the info about the author and the role of the house in "look homeward, Angel"
Very interesting piece of history. Knowledgeable tour guide. A good stop if history interests you.
Very interesting tour and exhibit hall. The staff was very friendly.
Unfortunately we went over Christmas and it was closed but we walked around the outside and it looked well preserved. Next time we visit Asheville,we'll be sure to visit.
Our guide was great.. The house & movie was very interesting
A wonderful museum and a tour of his childhood home (aka Dixieland in his book Look Homeward Angel) .
Everyone should visit this memorial and discover the fascinating story behind Wolfe's book.
Very knowledgeable staff that gave a great tour and conversation about Thomas Wolfe.
Although the house is closed due to the pandemic the guide was both nice and knowledgeable
Neat little museum. Would be better if the staff attempted to interact with its patrons instead of sitting and pretending to be somewhere else.
Good historic site with museum, movie and home tour. Lots of original artifacts
Really interesting tour. The house is perfectly preserved.
Would be nice if tours were more available.
Excellent tour!
Must of went by this place and didn't notice. Had to have been pleasant though.
Cant say anything about the memorial since we were actually outside attending the annual Thomas Wolfe Run.
