Reviews of Alaska Zoo
Gus Dalinis
The zoo experience was OK. Nothing to write home about or so spectacular it would deserve five stars.
Admission was $10/child and $17/non-resident adult.
There were hardly any staff walking around the grounds, which seems unusual for July. Would have been nice to get some questions answered from the kids.
There were tigers, bears (black, brown, and polar), seals, otters, eagles, goats, wolves, and more.
The grounds are nice and seem natural (like they built the zoo within a natural area).

Let's make this easy:
Nice walk. Good environment.
Prices are good.
However tiny playground. Not to many animals.
Most "exotic" is a tiger.
-for kids?
My son was good w walking around but he shocked me. He got bored. He wanted to learn more but you won't see any employees walking around.
Do yourself a favor. Look up a habitat or just grab them boots and go hiking. This is a one time cute weekend walk kind of thing for my family tbh.
Candace Mosteller
Amazing zoo! Friendly staff and interactive animals. Can visit year around despite the snow! Make sure to buy a bag of popcorn when you get your tickets that you can walk around and eat before entering.
The otters and polar bear were especially interactive. We enjoyed seeing all the native wildlife. Family friendly and a great spot if you have little ones.
Disclaimer: DO NOT bring your pet to the zoo. Legal and active working service dog pictured in photos. Medical equipment only permitted.
Omar Nieves
They offer military discount and AK residents discount 😉. They had tall grass which unfortunately I wasn’t able to see completely some of the animals. But overall it was and okay experience. Plenty to go around and see. Be ready to spend about 1-2hrs here if you go by every cage like I did. Also You can pay extra to hand feed some of the animals, or go up close to them
N N
Descent sized zoo. Animals are primarily rescued or provided shelter.
Parking is plenty and free. Not that well managed and maps were missing. Restrooms were there and were well maintained.
No food/water available inside.
Vanessa Ingle
The zoo was magical in the snow! Not all the animals were out, but we got to see the majority of the cold-weather ones. The zoo is on the smaller side but it's a great way to fill the day without needing to rush through. The shop is small but well-stocked and there are snacks available at the ticket stand.

This is one of the better zoo’s we have been to. The animals were easy to spot and the kids loved being able to run to various areas. The kids definitely loved the bears the most!! And the bear feeding was very special. Would definitely recommend this zoo for those with and without kids!!
Amanda Hamell
Had an event here. Greenhouse gets really hot on a sunny day. But lots of room and tables set up so nicely. We were able to go around the zoo as part of the event which made it extra special.
Jack McCaslin
Fun time. Animals were active today, especially the bears. Evenings are better to see the wolves. Some of the animals are less active during the day. Friendly staff and a nice gift shop. Animals here are mostly native to Alaska, with a few others, such as camels, alpacas, and a tiger.
Collin Quinton
Pretty good size but came when nearly all of the animals were napping. Due to the short staff and low inventory, the gift shop has some barron walls but still some good things to purchase. The foliage around most of the exhibits are too much to see the ground in the cages. The Otter scene was depressing as there was hardly any water and I saw it throw up on the rock it was perched on 😓 We also believe we witnessed one of the porcupines passing 😓 hopefully it was just our experience but it was honestly more depressing than anything else...

I went to this zoo while visiting family in Anchorage. The layout was very easy to follow and overall had a great time visiting this place. It’s really impressive to see the grizzly bears so close ! It’s also cool to see the ravens, mountain goats and polar bears they have there!
Jeremy Price
Im really spoiled to have an incredible zoo in my home town, so im not sure what to think of this one. It's small. Almost no staff for visitors. It's just animals in cages for the most part
Paul Siver
Most interactive Zoo I've ever seen. Its made to feel like you are exploring to find the animals. You walk into a magical forest to find incredible artic animals.
Marie
This zoo wasn't too bad, but it seemed like they were missing quite a few animals at the time of our visit. Theres plenty of places to walk around and get different angles of each enclosure. They appear to be a zoo working on conservation, and definitely not a little roadside zoo.
Judy Weigand
Wonderful place to visit every time I go to Alaska.
My son Brian and grandkids took me there. Sad to see so many empty cages.
Vyni Nagabandi
Awesome place to spend 2-3 hours in summer time. A lot of wildlife and very beautiful greenery.
We have seen black bear, brown bear, a lot of Ravens, alpacas, Moose’s, tiger, snow leopard, Hunchback camel, owls, red fox, and mainly a Polar Bear, and a few more other animals. This place is much fun for kids. I would recommend this place for people who are visiting Alaska. The gift shop was outdated and have very few interesting items.
Cassy Leetch
A great place to take the whole family! Love the selection of animals to see! They also offer animal "experiences" and have a playground on site along with a coffee & gift shop. The whole zoo was a really relaxing and peaceful.
Fannie Frankson
We had a wonderful time at the Zoo, we love stopping by and looking around. We try to stop and wander around the zoo each time we're in Anchorage.
Morgan Johnston
Don't go after feeding. No polar bears or moose. Lots of empty cages. Looked and felt sad.
Leah Jean
I think this zoo is actually really nice. They have nice walking paths, informative signage, and the zoo does wild animal rehabilitation work that is neat.
David W.
a little underwhelming for zoo's by modern standards. Most of the animals can only be viewed through chain links and a lot of the habitats were empty. As a zoo, the trail system was convoluted, not contiguous or planned out well. Maps were not given out and they were only a couple around. Alaska has amazing wildlife and the state really needs to think about converting some of the revenue from it's mineral and natural wealth into something worthy of it. It did have some redeeming things about it, but compared to other zoos in the country it falls really short. This zoo desperately needs to be redesigned and re-imaged. The displays are tired and so are the animals of being in them. Some billionaire, step up and help.
Jennifer Frysz
It's always nice to visit the zoo. At approximately 210PM (according to my photos), I was able to watch the Brown bear make his final lap around his area and head in to hibernate for the winter.
Matthew Hathaway
Great activity to do with your time spent in Anchorage. Jake the bear and the two bear Cubs in the infirmary were my two favorites to visit! The otters were super active when I arrived around 1000. Loved reading about how all the animals were rescues. Highly recommend.
OMENESA Aka: LADY O
not a big deal at all. Some cages are empty but some animals are there. One or 2 bears I saw. It is clean. Organized and thr staff are friendly
a traveling Mom
A nice little zoo. The habitats are very natural, not a lot of fake concrete rocks and displays. The animals were very active. You could pet the alpacas. The sidewalks are mostly gravel so a stroller isn’t going to be easy to push.
Christine Groening
A great variety of animals. They also had a small playground. The highlight of our visit was the GIANT brown bear! 🐻 …
Leo
Pretty decent zoo - the facilities look a bit outdated, but animals look well fed and happy. Walking in this zoo feels like you’re in a forest - trees and vegetations grow I. Their natural shape. For human this may not look very fancy, but I guess the animals may be more comfortable this way.
Goldie Russell (Valaria)
The big bears were out! I'm not sure if there isn't a polar bear there or if the bear was in a back area. I also couldn't believe the Snow Leopord was so close! The tigers were a bit more shy. There were several moose calves and even 2 young bear cubs. Still quite a good walk but I'm not fond of the small gravel on the steeper paths.
David Kim
It was fun & I loved how they did a deal for mother's day, but a lot of the exhibits were closed and overall it wasn't too big of a zoo. I think the wildlife conservation & the sealife center are better, but for being in Anchorage, it's something fun to do! They do have some good animals.
The Adventurers
Nice little zoo we a lit of animals to see, unfortunately I was waiting to see the polar bear but the two times I went looking for him was laying down and was hard to see him. I was able to see black bears and other animals.
Jonathan Joles
This zoo is easily walkable. It allows visitors to see coyote, bears, seals, and musk ox up close. It is a small zoo, good for a short visit.
Michael Forte
I love this zoo, and animal refuge. Every exhibit in the park is alluring and fascinating. My kids love it so much. I love that they are always interested in going. We go just about every Sunday. Porcupine, tigers, wolves, wolverine, snow leopard and Llama (rest easy Caesar) are our must see every time.
Amanda Wolfe
Was visiting Alaska with my husband for our honeymoon. I was very excited to see the zoo, unfortunately we both were disappointed. The animals enclosures were dirty and not kept well. I felt every animal was depressed. I've been to several zoos around the country and this one is at the bottom of the list. We didn't see one employee caring or checking on the animals our whole visit.
Dawn Blazier-Seely
Quaint little zoo tucked away in the woods.
Bethany
A great way to spend an afternoon. They have daily critter chats where they show you the animal if the day up close with a few snacks. We had a lot of fun I definitely suggest it!
Roamin' Rich
Great place! Kids had a great time here! Plenty to see and do. The facilities are very clean and well kept. It seems like the animals are well cared for. It wasn't over crowded. Very nice atmosphere.
Stacy Hawkins
Everybody loves the zoo! I just didn't know when I took my mother, who is in a wheelchair, that I would be pushing her in gravel. Leaving and having to push uphill was excrutiating. This was the first zoo I ever went to where the walkways are not paved. To see the seals, we had to go all the way to the end of the display area and cut back to be able to reach it in a wheelchair. Just a little disappointing.
Prashanth Naik
Worth a visit, loved Falcon, Tiger , Eagle and many other animals in the zoo.
Don’t miss tiger talk happens usually around 1PM (this happened when we visited in May)
Avg time to complete the zoo is around 3 hours.
Best time to go: 11 AM

Zoo Lights was fun, though not amazing. It was nice to have something festive to do in the evening, especially with so many things closed down. We were able to see some animals, though most were hunkered down for the night.
Chris Dougherty
They were all so nice and very informative. We didn't get to see the polar bear unfortunately. I highly recommend going when you can. It may be a little zoo but they have tons of variety packed in. The animals seem to be well taken care of. This is a wonderful place for people who aren't from the area to see all the native wildlife. I recommend getting a park map. It will keep you from back tracking, though we didn't mind seeing the same animals a few times over.
Ella Hurrell
Beautiful setting for some cold hardy animals. A learning and awareness experience for the whole family. We must respect our fellow creatures by first learning about them.
Loretta Fogg
Llamas, musk ox, camels, wolves, snow leopards, tigers, bears, owls, porcupines and hawks are a few of the amazing animals residing at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. All northern clime animals, so don't expect to see a penguin nor a monkey. Takes about an hour-and-a-half to see everything, although many people sray longer. There's a playground for younger kids, a petting zoo area (limited opening) picnic area and coffee shop with hot drinks and homemade snacks in addition to packaged food to warm up on chilly days. Our last trip was on a mildly rainy day, and the animals were more active and interested in their fresh birch tree treats than when it's hot and sunny out.
Thomas Greenman (Brando)
Really amazing zoo for its size with all sorts of things for kids to runs and do. Lots of hills so be ready for some exercise. Fun place to get out and escape the hustle and bustle of town. Gift shop and snack bar inside, as well as ample parking.
Crystal Ann
Enjoyed our trip to the zoo this week. It was our first time and even though it is not real big it is a great zoo! Loved seeing the polar bears, snow leopard and musk ox. Not something we can see in Texas. Nice layout with plenty of shade. Nice gift shop and coffee house.
Titu Colceri
Such a fun experience! The animals were lively and looked well fed and happy.
Came in the thick of winter during the day but made some new Alpaca friends!
Elizabeth Quinn
Great zoo! The animals were very active as it was overcast! The howling wolves were eerily cool! We spent about an hour and a half there with a 10, 8, and 4 year old. Would recommend.
Layne Edelman
Loved this zoo! We got to see feeding time with the brown bears which was amazing! Animals seem very well taken care of and their enclosures are extremely nice!
Maranda Powell
A nice little zoo with lots of beautiful local animals! Easy to see all the creatures within 2-3 hours.
Michael Padgett
Very nice zoo. Exhibits are laid out with trees between them, giving it a very wooded atmosphere. A great selection of animals on exhibit.
rachel stein
Very Awesome! I was so happy to see the polar bears together finally! Watching the Grizzlies was amazing. Very clean, very kid friendly, and they take AMAZING care of their animals.
Stephen Wood
It is a great time for the kids. There are all sorts if animals. The only things missing were polar bear, wolverine and moose.
N N
Unless you were able to come across wildlife in Alaska, how about dropping by to see them at this excellent zoo near the airport? Leopard was so cool.
Katie Weniger
Always a good experience when I visit. It gives everyone a chance to get an up close look at animals found in Alaska and some from other parts of the world. I like supporting the zoo because they do great rehabilitation work and educate the public a out wildlife.
Brandi Brown
My daughter loves this zoo, we come at least once a week. It’s a great way to see Alaska’s animals. The volunteer staff is lovely at the petting zoo and petting the goats is a great part of the visit. This isn’t an exciting zoo with animal shows and extra exhibits on a regular basis, don’t come here thinking the Bronx Zoo, come here thinking animal sanctuary. The story time could be better, meaning more interactive and organized. We held my daughter’s first birthday here and I was unimpressed with the event planner. The space was also extremely unattractive and underwhelming. There were pictures up from the 70’s and 80’s that were dingy and we could not remove them. If the palladium isn’t available I would not hold another party here. The winter events are fun and the Halloween lights are another fun activity.
Shannon Green
I loved this zoo! The paths weave you through the enclosures but I got a little turned around when I want paying attention to where I was going. Signs pointed me on the right direction,. I ran into the zoo keeper along the way who shares stories of the animals. Stories of how the zoo got each resident was posted near the pens.
Chrissy Dube
Had a great time at the zoo, was a nice way to get out of the house with the family and enjoy the sunshine. Was disappointed in the feeding experience that we paid for, we were expecting to actually feed the animal. However, only the guide fed the animal. If you don't actually get to feed the animal, maybe consider changing the name to close encounter with an animal instead of feeding experience with an animal. At no point in the description does it mention you will not actually be feeding the animal. I am thankful that there was only room in the group to purchase two tickets for the feeding experience vs. buying six tickets for my whole family to experience at $20 each only to realize we would not be feeding the animal.
Timothy Bateson
My wife and I picked the zoo as our destination for celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary. We arrived around lunchtime, and were there until just before 5pm. The staff were friendly, informative, and very pleasant, as we've come to expect over the years. We managed to see most of the animals, and were saddened to hear that they were down to just one wolf. We had a lot of fun, and revisited some of the animals several times. As always we had a lot of fun, and would definitely recommend visiting to anyone. We had the bonus of being there off-season so it was nice and quiet. Downside to that was hat many of their animal events weren't running. But that's understandable
Andre Alexander
Always a blast. This place is actually a sanctuary and rehabilitation center. Visiting helps support local wildlife
John Gibbs
I don't get to see moose, wolves, reindeer, and muskox back in the lower 48. So, for me, it was a great experience. It was cold and raining when we went, so there was no one else there but us. The grizzly bears are huge.
Tilly Dee
Super fun time with the kids. Very informative for the older ones and still held the interest of the littles.
Ryan Bish
Been coming to the Alaska Zoo to view the polar bears since 2002, went to the seminar about the declining beluga whale population in cook inlet on 11/13/2019, super informational with great speakers. Highly recommend the wildlife Wednesday series
Parker Helble
Plenty of mammals and birds, but be aware there aren't reptiles or amphibians. Totally worth $15 admission. Great trip for both kids and adults!
Aimee Dars Ellis
Small zoo easy to navigate with ample parking. I love to see animals in their natural habitats, but the animals at the Alaska Zoo were housed in enclosures that were small or didn't have enough behavioral enrichment. I did get to see a musk ox for the first time, and I was excited about that.
Mary Marshall
Great place for kids and adults to visit. Not that large but has all you need for part of a day to see the animals. Snow leaopard, Grizzly bears, tigers, and a polar bear.
Shae Joel
It's an ok zoo.
Better than the Springfield, mo zoo but way worse than the ones in Co.
They could do more for inside exhibits so can have more year-round.
Membership is more costly than I would like, especially since I'm not seeing where funds are going towards there and far less than Colorado zoos which have cheaper memberships and entrance fees with ALOT more to them.
But end of the day, it is a zoo. It's a great way to get kids out to see animals.
They do classes with homeschoolers I know which is great but they definitely could be a lot better and I hope to see them improve because it's such a good thing to have here.
Haley
This is a amazing and beautiful place the animals have it made because all the pens are as natural as they can be in a zoo the pens are really big, Its nice to see the animals look like there in the wild and the animals look more happy than other zoo animals.
Melissa Moody
One of my favorite place in town to take visitors, because the animals are great, the mission of the zoo is an important one, and the walking paths around the zoo are enjoyable all on their own!
Lawrence Goodrich
Nice little zoo, but the special behind the scenes tour was $28! Too expensive for very little knowledge you gain. Just walk it yourself.
Austin Langford
Incrediblely fun i reccomend for a date or a family day out ♡♡ the animals are well taken care of and the docile friendly attitudes reflect it the show offs ♡♡♡
Deanna Pushruk
Animals were finally talking today. Lots of fun as usual. I sure miss elephants being there. Just as well, they dont need to he caged. Lol never smelled camels before 👃peeww! …
tlchenvt
Polar bear was not there. Watched bald eagle, snow panther very closely. The brown bears don’t live in very good condition. They looked bored.
Samantha Seyfert
Nicely coordinated and staff were very knowledgeable. Take a behind the scenes tour to learn even more and get the best out of your experience. Each animal has their own personality, so plan to spend anywhere from a half to full day here.
Matt Merkel
I really liked this zoo, more than most I've been to. It was a nice last stop on our last day in Alaska, but compared to all the epic adventures and scenery we experienced, including native animals in the wild, it felt a bit tame by comparison. The zoo is not overwhelmingly large, but features mostly animals native to Alaska. It's a great opportunity to see them up close, as out in the wilderness you typically need high-powered binoculars or a stroke of incredibly good luck. The enclosures are large enough to give the animals room to roam, but not too large that they can roam far from view. It's a very family-friendly place, evidenced by the large number of mostly local families we saw there. Something I could tolerate, but that didn't necessarily add to the experience.
Sanghamitra Mandal
Great zoo. We saw a couple of grizzly bear and tigers, which was so fascinating. Lots of other
Lindsey Olson
We enjoyed the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center more than the zoo since it seemed like the animals had a bit more space and a bit more natural of an environment, but I respect that the zoo seems like it's mostly animals that were rescued; they frequently have signs posted with the origin stories of their animals.
Gunner Mattern
To start this review positively the animals look healthy, and the Polar Bear Exhibit is being updated.
This being Alaska's only zoo, I figure it would have more government assistance and funding.
• Online lists only 18 species of animals at the zoo. (Which almost caused me not to go.)
• The exhibits weren't marked correctly
• Most Exhibits were cluttered or dirty
• The whole time I was visiting, I only saw 2 people working outside.
• Most of the Zoo feels like you're looking at someone's private collection in their backyard.
(If that's the case.. then at least make it feel like a zoo if that's what you're marketing it as.)
• The Path's around the exhibits dead end in weird places and it's not stated as so. The paths are just common gravel, so it wouldn't be expensive to continue a path to a possible beneficial route to the exit.
I give it 3 stars because overall the animals didn't seem in distress and they looked healthy. It needs serious work though.
Kyle Green
Been here before in the summer. Great activity to bring little ones on nice days. Tonight (2018 Black Friday) we attended the opening of Zoo Lights. Fun event where various Christmas lights are displayed through the zoo as you visit with the animals that are still up and moving at night in the cold. For use this was the seals, leopards, tigers, cyotes, muskox, and a few others I'm not remembering.
TDLR: Zoo Lights was a great event and always fun to visit this place for the littles to see a variety of animals.
Mandy Schlereth
I really enjoyed my visit- we went during the Zoo Lights (where they hang Christmas lights up in the park and you can walk around at night) and it was really cool to see the nocturnal animals in action- the tigers were out (pacing as they all do 😔), the wolves were out howling one of the times we walked by, and the wolverines were playing together and with their food. It's clean, well kept, and the concessions are not too ridiculous like they are in some other parks ($3.00 for a small hot chocolate with milk brewed-to-order). I'd like to visit again during the day when more of the park is open to walk around!
Shannon Hartley
This is a great place for kids to walk around and get rid of that winter energy. Animals well cared for. Clean and friendly. Christmas lights are fun too.
Rachael B
Pretty disappointing. All the enclosures are very small and it was expensive to get in. We were able to see everything in an hr and that's with a 3 yo in tow. The actual grounds are neat how it's incorporated into the landscape.
Todd Michero
Wonderful habitat and exhibits for the animals. Support the Zoo and buy an annual membership. It's worth it!
Jennifer P.
Great local zoo to view bears and wolves. The wolves always catch my eye and the exhibit is built nicely to view them pretty closely.
Toni Walsh
My family loves the zoo. We get an annual family pass and go a few times a month. We do this not only because the trails are great, but because each time you go you discover a new behavior from the animals at the zoo. Last month when my family visited, we saw the otters wrestling and sliding. The next time we went we saw the tigers playing and calling to each other. That's the magic of the zoo. Not only are they involved with important conservation work around the state, but they also offer a unique experience each time you visit. Definitely a recommended location for family fun.
John Gomez
Awesome Zoo came all the way from New Mexico thank goodness for places like this they've saved quite a few animals you get to see animals you've never seen before
Matthew
Loved this zoo! Went during mid-February and there wasn’t a soul in the place! It was absolutely awesome. Got to see the beautiful tigers they had - I do worry that the animals aren’t cared for extremely well but they seemed to be okay.
Victoria Avery
We did the zoo keeper for a day and it was amazing. We got to make diets for some of the animals and feed a handful! Of course, we had to um clean up after them too. But these up close encounters I will remember for the rest of my life!
Hannah Wentz
We had a great time at this zoo. We went on a weekday and it wasn't too crowded. They have a wide variety of animals and open enclosures. We watched the wolverines and coyotes run around and play. The wolves also gave us a howling a acapella to enjoy.
Ky S
Decided to make the visit as my Alaska trip was short and I figured it was my best chance to see some of the native animals. It ended up being the highlight of my trip. The 6 degree weather might have caused a lot of people to stay home that day so I had the zoo pretty much to myself. But the animals were out and active, and very curious of me as well. Staff is incredibly friendly as well. If you're visiting Anchorage, I would encourage you to go.
Jessica Hunt
Didn't go at the most ideal time, but with our school event, there wasn't much choice. Lights were great, but it was too dark out for my liking. Kids had a blast and we did a scavenger hunt. I would like to take my family during the summer months so that we get a chance to see more. Great fun! We also enjoyed hot chocolate afterwards.
John Callahan
We found this zoo a bit disappointing. When we visited many of the animals were off display or on a field trip.
We found the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to be a much better experience and it was cheaper to visit.
Also, why do you have a couple ravens in a cage when there are a couple hundred wild ravens roaming your property? Why are those ravens in your care the least healthy looking ones that we saw on your grounds?
Nephrym
Very clean and well maintained! The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The animals seem to sleep in the middle of the afternoon though, so I will have to try going sometime earlier in the day when next I visit. My daughter's favorites are the seals and the petting zoo!
Shaun S
I've enjoyed the zoo several times.
Greg Olah
Love how this zoo is primarily indigenous animals. The animals that are not indigenous, are all from the same temperate zone, so it is very considerate and thought out.
Matthew McAlister
Small but that's ok. The zoo does not receive any public funding. Most of the animals there are rescues but a few have been snatched. Overall it was a good visit.
Morteza Karami
Even though some animals like snow leopard, tiger or polar bear are unique, the whole zoo is mediocre. Some spaces are more like a sanctuary or a rehabilitation area.
Colby “Cheezee”
Would have been better if we had been able to see the polar bear. But besides that it was a good little zoo.
Bill King, RPh
Wonderful place to see native and other species. Great walk. Playground. Get the popcorn.
Nathan Strutz
It's quaint, but has a great selection of Alaska's most fun and dangerous animals. Lovely walking paths and good displays of animals that mostly look happy.
Holly Green
Didn't get to see very many animals. Might have been a timing thing. Such a lovely place and walk through that I didn't mind much.
Sarah R
This is a nice little zoo. All the animals are well cared and loved. Every time we go there we learn something new and have fun. I saw a comment that said that the animals didn't have big enough habitats and that's simply not true. I will say it's not very wheelchair friendly because there sidewalks aren't paved. They are a very small zoo with not that many animals, but the experience makes it worth every Pennie. The tour guides and other employees are very informative and obviously care a lot about the animals. It has a lot fun events, especially Christmas for the animals. I recommend it to every person who visits here.
Ka Vang
Finally found us some parking. I did expected more animals. A lot of the cages were empty with no animals to be found. But overall experience was good. The walk around was very tiring on my leg, but that just means I'm out of shape. My second time there and will continue going back.
Louis
This zoo has some nice areas and ideas. The animals generally looked well taken care of. The facilities and condition of the zoo were poorly kept, and the total lack of on-screen signage directing customers, especially tourists was disappointing.
Lorrena Terry
Always a fun time at the zoo. Great trail to walk. All kinds of animals, friendly staff, nice cafe, and a small playground all hidden within #GetOutandPlay #Everyday #Anchorage #Alaska
Evelyn Blandino (DesertButterfly)
There are a lot of good exhibits of animals that are native to the far north. The walk from one exhibit to the next is very enjoyable. The forest setting feels natural to what you are here to enjoy. I do wish that there were more detailed learning opportunities. These are seriously the most fun paint jobs I've ever seen in a public restroom, though.
Lisa Cochrane
Kids had a great time! Lots to see. Saw my first snow leopard. Easy distances to walk.
Steven Kosmicki
Really nice facility and the animals were active with the cooler weather!
David Bozard
My family loves this place. Beautiful place to spend in the summer and winter. My daughter loves going back often, especially for their perfectly salted popcorn.
Krooked Anchor Outdoors
Its a nice place. Just dont go in winter.😁 …
Emma P
The zoo is a nice place to go. It's small but with a lot of amazing animals.
But the cages look small too and the polar bear seemed very alone to me...
Sean Ryan
Not a lot has changed since I was kid going here over 20 years ago. Most of the same animals and a lot of them are local animals to the region. Small compared to other city zoo's. It is worth checking out but not a place you would pay to go in again and again.
Kerry Hall
Its ways fun for the family to go to the zoo. My mom took me and my sister almost every week when we were kids.
C Vance
First time in Alaska and we wanted to make sure we made a stop at the zoo. So much fun seeing animals at the zoo we don't usually get to see down in Texas. I got an awesome, frame-worthy pic of the wolves. We were also lucky to see the Siberian Tiger playing with its ball, it was almost like he/she wanted to show us!! Best video ever!!! Great experience, I would recommend to anyone while in Anchorage!
Just Jessee
Always brings a smile to my face. It may not be the biggest zoo out there, but it's Our zoo.
Guadalupe Kirk
Nice zoo, it seems like some of the animals are not well taken care of.
Andy InAlaska
Small but very cool zoo! Wide assortment of creatures! Cute food and coffee shop! Playground for the little ones! Also they go all out for several holidays... Halloween is really cool!
Felicia Judge
Fun and the right price. The polar bear decided to not grace us with his presence but all the other animals were out and about. Cutest baby seal ever!
Lynene Young
Fun, smaller zoo to visit. Lots of animals that you may not see in other locations. Not too crowded. Easy to see it all in a couple of hours.
Shannon Smith
Very kid friendly, We did the Zoo Lights!! It was great to see the nocturnal animals at play.
B D
Love the zoo! They have some great animals and take good care of them. Some cages are empty, which is a good thing for the animals :)
Mike Grauf
The zoo provides the ambience of walking through the forest to see the animals.
Miqa Alexandrias
I absolutely love this place, and always make fond memories whenever we visit.
It's small, compared to some other establishments, but that is good, meaning that you know you will get to see everything without feeling rushed or having to walk a marathon.
A lot of active animals, and there was hardly any crows - which was amazing!
Always love seeing the seals and the otters, who were happily playing about.
There was an effort to making the enclosures clean, natural, and safe for the animals, which is always something I look for.
Loved the emphasis on keeping the animals there natural to the climate itself.
Also, made a new bestie with an alpaca.
Rob Moriarty
It's a relatively small zoo. But it was fun.
Alex Dangol
Nice little Zoo. Saw some cool animals there. It is worth the admission price.
Dimitra Kourtesi
Cute zoo! My first time seeing muskox and yak and really up close!
Mark Manni
Great open areas and the surroundings are not so busy that you can't enjoy the tranquility of the animals.
betty
The grounds are under kept and some of the animals were in need of bigger enclosures. However, some seemed to have big enclosures. The cool thing about this zoo was that some of the animals are in there for rehabilitation before going to other zoos. And I can honestly say this is the first zoo that had things such as mountain goats, turkeys, porcupine, and wolverines.
Bailey Kirkland
Love that the zoo is exactly like I remember as a kid .. in the middle of the forest surrounded by animals. Love me some ools
CINDY FLORES
Best small zoo i have been to in my life.
Greg Hall
The zoo is interesting, it is in a natural setting and most of the animals have been rescued or born in captivity. It's fun to see them up close.
Brian
Great place to take the family!!! Small but enough to occupy the kids for a bit!!
sheryl bishop
Very nice little zoo. Many animals were off exhibit but I expected that as it's still winter. The animals still out were very active.
HenryRL
A good fully outdoor zoo (Climate might cause different experience)
Cristie Nowinski
The zoo is beautiful, clean and everyone is very friendly.
Catt Crosby
Arrived at 4pm, the cats, bears, and goats were asleep. Perhaps they should close st 5pm instead of 8. Loved the vibe
Paul Laughlin
Beautiful wooded zoo!
Esther
Some of the cages were empty, but overall we had a good time.
Matt Houser
The Zoo was nice. Recommended for seeing some Arctic wildlife.
Christopher Anderson
This Zoo is ok, I've been to way bigger Zoo's but it's nice. The kids enjoyed it, they're favorite was by far the tigers and bears.
Krystal Thompson
Had a great time with my family. Took just a little over an hour to walk around the park but it was priced appropriately.
Teresa Brown
Great hidden treasure! Close-up, personal views of the animals.
Zoom zoom Venus
Always amazing with the animals. The bears are the best to watch!
Amber Ausdahl
Wonderful, educational zoo with a beautiful wooded trail and lots of animals! Such great memories here!
Nessa Glenn
Overall it was a pretty good time. If you're looking to see the polar bear don't bother in the summer she won't come out except at night when the zoo is closed. We went twice and we never saw her. They don't do feeding times or any type of encouragement to have her come out for a little while during certain times either.....I called them and they said it's because it's to hot for her even in 50 degree weather on a cloudy day I guess. There are a ton of birds to see though if you're into that. The brown bears and black bear cubs and snow leopards were neat to see.
TJ Youngman
Great to see a zoo that is really a rehabilitation center for animals
Melody Hall
I love that you get a true Alaskan experience from this zoo... It's wooded and gravel instead of cement everywhere.
Chantal Testman
It's the middle of winter season her but manage to see the snow leopard, female modes, wolves, sitka deer, coyotes, various raptors and a wolverine. Very nice gift shop, clean bathrooms and overall a wonderful experience.
Rob Petrie
Nice local zoo. Many of the animal exhibits are outdated and cramped. Trails though the zoo could use better signage.
Jessica W
Unfortunately a lot of animals weren't there or cages were empty. All of the buildings and such were closed except souvenirs and admissions. Other than that my family and I had a wonderful time. Spent several hours here walking around and seeing the animals. Especially the Tigers!!!!
Peter
For the price this is one of the coolest zoos I have ever been at.
Ross Miner
Every one that cones to anchorage alaska needs to check out our ZOO. The staff puts in lots of work to keep it running smoothly. And the love they all have for the animals is priceless.
Aaron Donham
Nice zoo , very clean, animals seemed well cared for. The animals seemed very old...especially the wolves
A PERFECTLY Imperfect mama
It was a nice Zoo. Most animals were out and about! Pic is of a bear cub in rehabilitation!
Andy Munzanreder
Nice zoo exhibits were well kept and natural surroundings
George Bright Sr
My daughter was very excited seeing tje animals
Melodious Merri
Always a great place to visit for Alaskans or visitors. I have an annual pass and go often with my son. Lots of rescued animals and sometimes they are baby bears.
Jennifer Fisher
We really enjoyed the view while visiting town.
jasonh542
The animals were well taken care of and looked healthy. A great place to take the family and walk around.
Alene McDermott
Its a great little place to walk and look at local and northern animals with family.
Christina McDonogh
While the prices are a bit high, we know we are helping to feed the animals. Anyway, a membership will quickly pay for itself after just a few visits. If your family decides to take a trip, you will need an off-road stroller otherwise you will need to wear your baby.
karyssa gibbs
All these animals are rescues which I think is so cool. The exhibits are a little ran down but it was a nice little zoo.
Shawn Hansen
Bueatiful holiday lighting throughout the Zoo. Snow leopards seemed to enjoy the cold
Russle Steward
Yup, it's a small zoo. Saw enough animals for folk like me to say yup, I saw it in Alaska. Some trails not handicap friendly. Most of the animals are elderly.
Gary Poppe
I thought the zoo was okay. My biggest complaint was some of the pens were quite small and there was no sun relief. It was warm the day we were there and some of the animals, with heavy coats of fur, had no protection from the sun's heat. Shade and/or water relief seemed appropriate. On a positive note, they did have a large variety of animal species and it was an overall positive experience.
Joshua Gentry
We did the polar bear encounter and it was awesome! Cranberry was such a good girl! I never thought I'd get to feed a polar bear, much less have it follow my commands. 10/10 experience, would highly respect. The Zoo itself was very nice and the animals looked happy and healthy.
Che Christophersen
Good experience but must of the animals were hiding or all alone and lonely..
monte kiggins
Most of the animals were out
Ben Blankenship
Very well kept and easy to navigate with a friendly staff.
Tammy Bahama
The llama fell in love with my spouse and would follow him around. WE won’t be coming back ;)
The baby musk ox were the cutest. Lots of animals missing but still a perfect tourist outing for any of your out of town friends.
Rachel Harrie
Really beautiful zoo that is well spaced out. You get to walk through gorgeous landscape to each enclosure. Each animal was some sort of rescue and had something permitting it from being released back into the wild, but still it makes you somewhat sad to see them enclosed in cages. Beautiful facility though!
tommy perkins
Good place to take the kids . But a little pricey for how little bit of animals they do have at this zoo.
Tingwei Meng
Good for a 1-hour walk. We saw bears and snow leopards. Good activity before leaving Alaska.
Christal Nelsen
Get the zoo pass! It's really affordable ($40 per adult and children 2 and under are free) With admissions being $13/person, the pass pays for itself if you go more than 3 times. The zoo has been a great place for my toddler to walk (we don't have to worry about cars coming). The zoo sing along times are also great. :) Our family has loved going to the zoo.
UnAttempted
Good but the path to walk on should be paved, I saw people with strollers struggling in the gravel. I can't imagine a wheelchair.
Nice, quiet zoo overall.
Grace Suarez
The animals were almost all asleep and frankly looked a bit sad. Maybe it was the warm weather. The setting is pretty though.
Joe Eklund
Nice animals. The enclosure could be better.
Ursula Pico
Was fun for me and the kids, nice walk. beautiful animals; The Tigers were my favorite
Beth Blakely
A mixed experience. The young lady in the ticket booth seemed to want to be anywhere else other than there. Our first animal exhibit was the seals which couldn't really be seen under water because of the massive build-up of algae on the windows. I was quite concerned at that point that this zoo was going to be disappointing, but it did get better. The size of the enclosures meant you really got to see most of the animals, though in some cases they felt a little too small. We did enjoy the brown bears and the eagles, and enjoyed all the information cards that told each animal's story. The signage could be much better on the paths... we found ourselves doubling back a lot to see things we missed. Watching the staff walk the wolves wa certainly a highlight. All-in-all it was a nice zoo, but needs a little TLC here and there
teresa leibold
great zoo, very tidy and animals look well taken care of.
Jamie Brennan
We went to the Christmas zoo lights the night of the big earthquake, it was awesome that they were open when just about everything else was closed. The lights were really cute and it was really cool to see all the nocturnal animals being active, a whole different experience compared to your typical daytime zoo visit when many of the animals are sleeping. The Snow Leopards, Amir Tiger, Coyote, mountain goat, were all great. We also got to hear the bald eagles calling to each other, which we’d never heard before. Great visit and definitely worth a visit for the Christmas lights, reduced admission price is sweet!
Tina Carpenter (Tina)
What a fun small zoo! We visited on the 50th anniversary when it was half price, and the staff were doing lots of scheduled visits in the pens with the animals. The staff was great at answering all of our questions while working with the animals. Some animals were not present that were shown on the map - I found out some had passed on. Most of the animals are rescued. They had an infirmary and orphaned area section which I thought was nice to have. However, the petting zoo was only a goat and 3 chickens.
Ninja M
I went to their night exhibit a couple days after the start of a new year. They had charming light/LED decorations (shaped like animals) throughout the zoo, and they had a surprising amount of active night animals. There were a few indoor stops where you could warm up and buy snacks. Another customer "in the know" taught us how to get the coyotes to howl/yipe along with us.
Chris Bering
Our 6 year old had a great time. We liked the wilderness feel of the zoo. The coffee shop was a great resting point and the gift shop had a nice variety of items to choose from. Overall, we spent about 3 hours there and saw everything in the zoo.
Keith Lemay
Lots of fun for children, some creatures may be off exhibit but still plenty to see. We went around noon and found many animals were napping so there was not much excitement factor but we all enjoyed ourselves. It took about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk through the park. Found a coffee shop near the back which I would definitely have stopped for if the kids weren't so eager to move on.
Simon Carpenter
This is a very nice small zoo. I like that many of the paths are not paved (like say, the San Diego or St. Louis zoos). The paths are natural material and it makes it feel like you're walking through a forest full of beautiful and interesting animals. The zoo has a very nice gift shop too.
Nadine Janvier
Amazing animals, friendly staff. Great zoo to visit.
Desert Rat
best zoo in Alaska! don't miss it
Savanna Piekarski
The staff was very helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. The two women working at the petting zoo were willing to assist with questions from my eleven year old brother. Another female worker was able to answer all of the groups questions about the caribou. And there were a lot of little kids bursting with questions! The zoo itself was clean, welcoming, informative, and fun!
Alejandra Saetama
Love the zoo
L V
Great place to view all the Alaskan animals. Easily spend half a day there. Do the behind the scenes tour for an awesome experience.
Holly Hansen
COVID hit this little zoo hard, many of the animals had to be rehomed. There was still a ton to see, my favorite was getting three ft away from a bald eagle watching it keep an eye on its next meal. What a majestic animal. Bears, moose, polar bear (shy), yaks, water buffalo (fiesty), alpaca, and in and on. A few big cats, but the wolves and a few others were not there. Take the kids and take your time.
Scott Carpenter
Small and just right for a few hours of walking around...most animals were out wondering around....
Angeline Whitman
Great place to go with the kids. They enjoyed every moment. Wow, one if those bears was playing in the water with a boey.
We enjoyed the experience. Thank you Alaska Zoo for being open, and such a positive experience.
Babitha M
Loved it! Got to see very different animals. The animals were all well taken care of. The zoo had a nice picnic area with a small play area for the kids. It has a nice cozy coffee shop as well. The food selection was good. I loved the hot cocoa ☺️
Allen wate
Wonderful place to spend an evening. They have a large selection of animals that are very close. Great place for a date. Season passes are very reasonably prices too.
Darnyl Vermeire
The alaska zoo has always been a great zoo to visit. It specializes in alaska animals and presently has two cute bear cubs that you need to see. Takes about an hours to stroll the gravel paths and enjoy the atmosphere. There is plenty of shade and places to rest. I love the alaska zoo.
Shawna Bolog
I LOVE this place! They are always so nice and welcoming. They take such great care of their animals, they truly care for their health and safety. Highly recommend!
Megan Villa
We had a good time at the zoo, but the petting zoo was closed. Entrance prices are reasonable but there are no exotic animals. The exception was the Siberian tiger but it was sleeping so far away we couldn't even take a picture of it. Polar bears were also sleeping. The brown bears were the highlight of the visit. We were able to track the entire zoo and see all the exhibits in about 2 hours. Also enjoyed gift shop as well.
Kristina Fidler
We like the zoo enough that we got an annual membership despite living an hour away. We enjoy seeing the bigger animals there, but there are quite the selection! Moose, caribou, yak, deer, grizzly bear, polar bear, black bear, musk ox, tiger camel... so many more! My daughter's current favorite is Cranberry, the polar bear, however, I really enjoy the seals and otters.
Seth Ober
Bigger than you think. Kinda low staff. Pretty sure I could have just walked in without pay. But when we were like, no, we should pay we turned back to the Concessionaires and the old man was like, what you want? And we're like, tickets. He seemed confused. Guess we interrupted his lunch
McKay Christensen
Love this zoo! I went in the fall and had a splendid time. Unlike other zoos I have been to, this zoo felt a lot like I was in the wild and that the animals were in their natural habitat. While the zoo may not be as big or have as many animals as other zoos, it really has a nice relaxing atmosphere. It was not crowded at all when I went. Pretty sure I saw more animals than people. Yay!
Alex H
We've been to many zoos and this has to be one of the best.. as far as animal proximity and activity goes. The coyotes were playing with each other, the tigers were walking on our side of the fence (being super active), one of the bald eagles was right next to us at the top walkway, the bear was on our side of the fence 'playing' in the water, etc etc. There was snow on the ground but gravel was put down so it wasn't slippery. We saw two wild bald eagles in a tree. My only "complaint" would be that the coffee area was closed but I get it... Covid and all. Small zoo but was actually bigger than we expected. Would absolutely recommend.
Evotia Taliulu
It was our 1st experience w/sum of of our famz from out of state. We didn't see no polar bears nd it was too pricey but not worth it!!!
Tayla Jones
It cost a good amount if money and there is hardly any animals. It took maybe an hour to take my niece who is 7 and my nephew who is 10 around to every open exhibit it was definitely better before covid. Now it's a little disappointing
Becky Noyes
Very nice zoo with lots of really nice exhibits and plenty of animals to enjoy! Actually now one of my favorite zoos! We actually visited later in the day, so it wasn't very busy and it was a cooler day so many of the animals were out front and center. I hope to return someday when I make it back to Alaska someday.
Jason Thrills
Had A lot of fun with the kids, the exhibits are well kept and they do tend to move animals around to accomodate them while they remodel so some signs may differ from whats in the exhibit. Kids all had a great time, also bring your own food and play at their kids park next to the picnic tables.
Doyce Parnell
Loved it!!! Awesome experience!!
We got to see Arctic animals.
We loved seeing the huge brown bears.
We watched the river otters play, and the
Polar bear was amazing.
The bull moose had huge antlers.
We would highly recommend going!!
The slushies are so wonderful!!
The Roaming Rosiers
Nice, clean, gives a good feel of local wildlife.
Paths are rocky and steep in some places. It is easier to have a jogging or trail stroller or pack little ones. It was lots of fun for my 4yr old. Enjoyed the information stations.
Jeff Stetz
Great setting, a nice variety of native and exotic species, and good educational information about the residents. Certainly better than any indoor activities like watching idiots on television! Take the kids!!
Amie Kirby
Very small zoo, great for smaller kids. Several of the areas didn't have any animals. Spent about an hour or so there and saw everything. The staff seemed very friendly and nice.
Alex Slaght
We went here yesterday for our sons first birthday and we all loved it. I adore that it is a rescue/rehab zoo and they have informational plaques that tell you the story of each of the inhabitants. Great prices and amazing people!
TheGhostinthenight ,
The zoo itself is nice and has low admission costs. Unfortunately many of the animal exhibits were concerningly small, especially ones like the brown bear and harbor seals.
I am not sure how well the zoo can provide for the needs of their animals in such constrained habitats.
Natalie Castaneda
Beautiful, amazing and fun zoo... my family and I had so much fun. Its clean, organized, affordable and all the employees are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend to visit.
TeddyNinja
So scenic in the snow. Me and my girlfriend had the zoo practically to ourselves and it was great. The Christmas lights put up everywhere didn't hurt either. Check on the polar bear a few times because he tried hiding from us but the otters and seals are always playing around and have great exhibits. Bonus points if you can find a zoo keeper to help you get the coyotes to howl.
Yellow Jacket
Anchorage, Ak zoo is a great place to take the family and enjoy the day. Lots of animals to see. My favorite being the tigers but all animals are awesome to see. My advice would be to get there earlier in the day to enjoy and take your time cause the zoo does close at 4pm daily.
Abby Miller
Im in a group visiting from florida and we wanted a nice experience to see the animals that was kid friendly. The prices are not bad, especially for a big zoo. We made our trek to see every animal. Only the red fox stayed hidden from us. Each animal had a placard with its story written on it, how they hot there, if they were hurt, etc. There were also informational signs for each species that were really cool to read. In one section of the zoo were some baby animals that had been abandoned as well as other rehabilitated animals to see, you had to be quiet so you wouldnt spook them but it was very cool to watch. We brought our own lunches and there was a nice shady area with picnic benches close to a playground. A super great experience for our entire group. I loved seeing the wolves, snow leopard, and seals (there was a baby seal too!) the most :)
Ty Kon
Still an amazing place to visit. I haven't been in 10 years but took my neice today and had as much fun as ever. The wolf enclosure is amazing. My niece wanted to "start a howl" while all the wolves were asleep. Not only did she wake them up, but they all came to see her. Always worth a trip and if you've never been, you simply must.
Amanda Graves
It was Great. Staff answered a bunch of questions. Watched the bears be fed. So fun.
B L
Lots of great sights, cool animals, they look healthy, the zoo was clean. Staff were all busy educating individuals. There were about three school groups doing all sorts of neat stuff. I'd totally reccomend it.
Wendy Kaye Dial
They have a lot of different animals. It is spread out. I actually missed a bounch of exhibits and didn't realize it until we had left. Their gift shop is nice and clean. It is a great place to come and relax or bring children. It is good for groups or solo.
Makayla Suttle
I feel like I wasted my time and money. Most of the animals weren't out and it was the middle of a nice day...
Rick Lee
The only reason why I didn't give it a five-star I don't like see animals from the wild in cages
Brad Thompson
It's quite small but they pack alot in that small place. The bear section was great and I could watch those otters all day long. I think overtime as more people visit Anchorage this zoo will grow into something even more spectacular than it is now. This is a must see attraction when visiting Alaska.
Russell Trent
If I had never been to another zoo any place else I would likely think it was a great zoo. But it's really small, there isn't a lot of animals and the enclosures are on the smaller side.
But they do have some pretty cool animals like a polar bears, dall sheep, mountain goats, wolves, wolverine, snow leopard, yaks and of course moose, reindeer and other Alaskan animals.
It's a fairly nice way to spend an hour with the kiddos :)
Gerie A
The zoo is a lot of fun to me and I love animals. The zoo is small and easy to walk around winter or summer. The animals are all Alaskan except the camels, lamas, yaks and the tigers. However they were all rescued from the wild and it is a fun way to see the devirsety of animals Alaska has.
Lots of fun for little kids too, they have a small playground and a petting zoo with farm animals
In the summer the zoo offers free shuttles from Downtown and in the winter the Zoo Lights are a lot of fun to see.
Franny Yeates
Not physically the largest zoo we have seen, but very likely the most amazing collection of animals. All of Alaska’s and Canada’s bears, wolves, and moose, plus tigers and various yaks from Central Asia, and Snow Leopards!! One of the rarest animals on earth, and they have two! They are unbelievably gorgeous. A devoted, dedicated and very friendly staff. Absolutely delightful place to visit.
Brandon Mason
Great atmosphere and the animals look happy. My kids loved this place and ran around having a blast! It is surprising large and I think we missed some stuff! Plus they have a free shuttle from downtown and back!!
Julia Lavin
Fun to see in winter with no crowds, but definitely missed seeing the bears. They offer a lot of great programs for locals and the staff were friendly. Wish there were more spots to warm up during the walk, but otherwise a lot of fun!
Shannon O'Hara
Friendly place that is educational and a great rehabilitation center for injured animals. Reasonable pricing.
Map was a bit confusing though.
Enclosures offer various viewing angles.
They offer personal tours and interactions with certain animals including assisting with feeding.. There are snow leopards, black bears, brown bears, a variety of owls and predatory birds as we'll as camels, alpacas and a petting zoo.
Joel Johnson
Not a large zoo but respectable.
Veronica McIntyre
Very cool zoo! Felt like you were hiking through a forest. Paths were well maintained. Great exhibits with active animals. Very informative displays. Well worth the price.
Chris Aronoff
Can't wait to see this zoo in different seasons! Even though it was snowing and cold, and my mobility scooter got stuck a few times... I got to see Alaskan animals and birds in a great atmosphere. We bought season passes and we are visiting again before "summer" ends. ( Moving from South Florida is a big change). Family friendly and a small area to picnic made this better.
Marlon Hoagland
The staff is great and the zoo itself takes in animals who were injured to the point that they would die in the wild so they take care of them... But it is also pretty boring, if you have been there once then you have seen everything, they don't do a lot if there isn't an event being hosted so timing is everything.
Julie Showler
Great Familly friendly zoo featuring rescued Alaska wildlife.
Dilafruz دل افروز
Had my daughter's birthday at the zoo. The kids and adults really enjoyed the experience. The special close up encounter with Nik (grey wolf) was pretty awesome 🙂 Definitely a good place to take kids to. …
Wuji Fei
Overall ok experience. The zoo is not big, and lots of animals are taken off the exhibit when we were there. However, they did a good job getting animals that are injured and taking care of them. My favorite was to see the moose in close. But the moose range was placed in a weird position so even if it were to get close, you can’t really see it that clearly. A bit bummer.
Michael Jenks
I go here several times a year, and for the past 3 years it's been excellent.
Was cool to come and see the wolves shedding their coats and going white.
Great for kids and adults.
Only 4 stars due to unclear signage. I've been going here for YEARS and still have trouble finding the cafe...
noemi suarez
I went with the hope of seeing the polar bear and was disappointed to read a notice that the polar bear is given access to other areas other than the pool area that the public is unable to see her. The young lady at the entrance even told me
" good luck because she likes to hide". Meaning that she's in the area unseen to the public.
Kristen Taylor
Limited viewing of most of the main exhibits. I've been to several zoos in my travels and thought Alaska would have a great one because of all the land here but it's very cramped and many animals weren't currently on display.
Whitney Dooley
most of the animals that I saw at the zoo came to the zoo injured and where not bred in captivity. I loved that. I also witnessed the connection these animals have with there caretakers. A falcon was sad to see its caretaker leave after doing a weight check, and I witnessed silver foxes getting a good ear scratch from its caregiver. There is a real connection there and it was a fun day with the kids.
Chelsea Graf
Not your average zoo and that's what keeps the animals happy! A delightful stroll along the gravel trails, under a rustling canopy of leaves! No elephants or other large, southern hemisphere animals. Here you'll experience wolves, owls, eagles, and a few surprisingly content camels; who knew they'd like the Alaska climate! Always educational joy as staff takes time to teach us about their animals and various programs. Our favorite visit is always to the orphan bear cubs as they are rescued ans cared for until re-release!
Amber Davidson
Small zoo with multiple construction projects going. A couple of new bear Cubs which were adorable playing outside. Not a great day to go probably since most are Arctic species and it was too hot for them! The snow leopards were down close to the gravel trying to chill off which was quite cool since they were so close.
D L
Great place for kids .. u can walk through everything in 1hour and 30 minutes
Adam Booth
I love our zoo. It's smaller and more simple than others I've been to, but I think it's authentically Alaskan while throwing in a couple of surprises (like Amur tigers for one example). It is setup in a way that you feel like you're walking through an Alaskan forest. Because of this, it isn't the most wheelchair-friendly place in town, but visiting in a wheelchair can be done. The amount of bugs that bothered us while visiting was minimal.
Evan Nunley
I love the Anchorage Zoo! Especially Little Rock the Musk Ox. Hes the best! I'll come back every year to say hi to him! The Zoo is doing everything it can to keep people safe during the pandemic. When we went, on a Thursday, there were not many people there at all making it very easy to social distance!
Suzanne Scherer
Loved our experience here. Got to witness feeding time and make the coyotes and wolves howl which was great. Also, Mr pickles the porcupine never disappoints with all his personality. Staff were very friendly and animals were out to play
Becca Hill
Such a nice place to visit with the family! Animals are all easy to view and the grounds are kept very clean. The pathways are gravel so any strollers or wheelchairs should be aware.
Megan Peter
The Alaska Zoo is so much fun! There are many unique animals here that you can't see in other zoos and lots of fun "extras" too. It is a year-round favorite, especially in wintertime for zoo lights!
Alisha Mayer
The Alaska Zoo is awesome. It's a great place to take the kids for some outdoor exercise, and they love the animals, many of which will interact with you if you're there at the right time of day. They have many weekly and summer programs for kids of all ages, and their gift shop is great. They are constantly improving the animal's enclosures as they can with the money and weather restraints they have to work with. Sure, larger zoos with larger budgets and warmer weather to accommodate more exotic animals are nice as well, but not all zoos have polar bears and moose and musk oxen, or the charm our Alaska Zoo!!
Anthony Probst
Beautifully laid out zoo. I enjoyed seeing animals that are from the north and are used to the weather, landscape and plants found in Alaska and parts of Asia.
I recommend going, especially this summer and donating if you have the chance.
Carol Harris
Always love visiting the zoo and really enjoy all their special events! Yesterday at a birthday party behind the scenes event, I dropped my cellphone. The staff tried to find it for me, but no luck. This morning my husband and I went back with a metal detector and Pat Lampi, the executive director, was gracious enough to brave the cold and take us behind the scenes again to find it. Amazingly, we found it buried under 2 inches of snow! Thanks Pat and the zoo staff!
David Brown
Loved the zoo. Great pictures of the animals. Loved that the walk around as it was very natural. Easy to see all th animals within 1.5 hrs if you have tight time schedule.
C J
As animal lovers, the zoo was a must! It is quite small; but, the best part is they cater to the local animals, so we were able to see, photograph and learn about most of the Alaska wild!! It is quite small; but, has the best layout for viewing, it that the enclosures are accessible from all sides!
John Albee
This zoo is different than most in the lower 48 in that it's smaller and seems to have a different focus. We we lived in Phoenix we used to go to the Phoenix Zoo which is nice however I prefer The Alaska Zoo because the walk is so much more enjoyable even if there is overall less exhibits. We ended up getting seasons passes as its a quick outing and like every zoo, is going to be a different experience based on time of day and time of year. We have our own stroller that works well on trails however it does appear that they have loaner strollers that would do better on the paths than city strollers. The paths aren't perfect level cement paths everywhere which is nice as I think it makes it feel a bit more natural.

Staff is friendly and facility is clean. Unfortunately it appears the Alpaca has hoof rot. Hopefully, the staff is aware and taking measures to fix. For a non government funded zoo it was very nice. Wish some animals had more space but budget limitations are to blame.
Breanna Cobiskey
This place was beautiful! My husband and I had a very pleasant visit. Most of the animals were rescued which was great to see. Bring the kids and family to enjoy a great experience and education!
Aleksei Denisov
Not bad at all. It was raining when we went and there are many covered areas to hang out and watch animals
Fabiana Santos
I live in Brazil and I look at the earth online for hours at the white bear.
I'm really curious why he keeps walking around the same place all day. I see that there is more space for him to move around but he walks the same way all day.
What is the reason for this repetitive routine?

This zoo is a medium sized, somewhat confusing maze of trails, but we managed to see all of the animals, and we were not disappointed. We watched and listened to a group of wolves howling. We watched the grizzlies eating. We watched the dall sheep eat up close. We saw many kinds of raptors, eagles, ravens. We saw musk oxen, coyotes, moose, porcupines, seals and many other animals! Many of the animals are rescues that can no longer live in the wild. Definitely consider visiting this zoo. But they look healthy though
Rakshanda Visave
I had really good time in here. It was fun watching Alfa and also beer .
Tx Consumer
The zoo is wonderful; however, the staff at the admission stand is very rude and behaves like their customers are a bother! It took at least 20 minutes to recollect ourselves so that we could actually enjoy the zoo. This needs a serious review by zoo administrators!
Benjamin Scott
Honestly when I first went I thought it was going to be kind of lame but this zoo actually has a really nice layout. I do wish they had a little more animals to show but for the size of the city it makes sense. Will definitely go again
DO IT WITH NATE
Winter twice in one month very fun place to go. but don't expect to have them answer the phone when you call
Daniel Moseley
Alaska Zoo is a great place to take the family for an afternoon outing. It usually takes our family about two hours to see all of the animals. We bought an annual membership since we're a pretty large crew.
(Admittedly, we were spoiled years ago by the Saint Louis Zoo; I still can't believe that place has free admission.)
Emily Clarrey
Nice little zoo! Staff was very friendly! Very cool to see animals you cant see at other zoo's like polar bears, eagles, Grizzlies, ox, doll sheep!
Malachy Moran
A really fun way to spend a few hours. Small, but they have a great selection of animals, most of them native to Alaska. Favorites are the seals, bears and owls. Not too expensive, and definitely worth the 15 bucks.
Grace Hawkins
My niece and nephew had a blast at the Star Wars event!!
Christian Jacobs
Great small town zoo! Great place to see the animals of Alaska without going into the bush. It is very well maintained and has exceptionally friendly staff. I go here every time I visit anchorage and thoroughly enjoy every visit.
Casey Renteria
This place is a maze in a good way. My daughter loved getting lost on the paths to different animals. We spent 2 hours here and didnt see everything. Great place to take toddlers to kill an afternoon.
Nichole A
Great zoo. The paddocks are cool and you get closer to the animals than any zoo I've ever been too. Good collection of animals. The wolves are the best! And Cranberry of course.
David Matz
If you go there expecting a big city zoo, you will be disappointed. If you go interested in Alaskan and Arctic animals and willing to walk in a wooded setting, you should have a good day. You might even learn from the interpretative signs. Marquis animals are the polar bears, snow leopards, and Siberian tigers. Highlights of our visit were the baby musk ox, the orphaned black bear cub, the active Siberian Tigers and brown bear. This is a great outing for kids as it isn't huge, although by the end of the day my kids were definitely done.
Nunyo Bidnez
Just a great place. The Zoo Lights are worth going for alone.
T Helkenn
Lots of cool animals to see.
Andrew Nowa
Lots of great animals. Perfect size for small children.
James Morowski
Great place to check out. Cool animals to see up close and the staff was super nice. Has an awesome gift shop that will make you wish you had an extra bag to bring stuff home.
Serena G
I really liked the layout of it how it was like walking through the woods & seeing animals. The gift shop is awesome too. I think it needs more play areas for the kids.
Dale Robinson
Plenty of animals out and about each time I've been!
Shari Ferrelli
We had a great time at this zoo. The price was reasonable and the even though the animals were in large cages/areas, we were able to see most of the animals up close and personal.
Lori Lester
We love the Alaska Zoo and get the annual family pass. Our 3 year old son especially loves running the trails. Super happy they added a playground for young children.
Todd Walter
First time at the Alaska Zoo was for the Zoo Lights. My kids loved it, can't wait to take them there in the Summer!
Jeremy Johnson
Good sober fun at the zoo
Terrence Polen
Very nice for a small zoo. The animal infirmary was particularly good. Good for a 2 hour visit.
Misty Kennedy
Ok zoo. Bonus was wheelchair accessible and animals were close up to see and visible. Back story of each animal. Friendly staff. Negative is no paved walkways, animals are in very small cages and looked pretty unkemp.
Jerry Quinn
Great spot to see Alaska's critters plus a few "out of state" visitors. An easy one hour walk can pretty much cover the grounds or a little longer if you're escorting the kids. Well worth a look
Jon Vallier
Very nice Zoo. Glad to see all the animals were either orphaned or injured. No animals were kept for the sake of entertainment. Prices were good, but you cannot use a zoo pass that works for other zoos here.
Grant Hartwig
4.5 out of 5. Just got done seeing the zoo lights. Great time and awesome animals. They have all the Alaskan animals, only reason it gets 4.5 and not 5 is because the AWCC is 40 min away and has almost just as many animals but is more of an Alaskan experience.
Melody
It's a great set up. They give homes to animals from all over the world. Most have been rescued and would have died. It is a must way to spend the day. And so very affordable
Hilary Keyes
It was a little spendy for walking through the park in an hour with a toddler. It was a nice walk and there were some fun animals and it was nice the zoo was empty. We did go when it was snowing though
Russell Durkee
Not a huge Zoo. Nothing new is Zoo. For what they have is really clean. Animal seem well cared for. Definitely not over the top. Give yourself about an hour maybe an hour and a half.
ZZZ Pro
Very nice zoo. Clean and the animals seemed very well taken care for. And first time visiting was nice to see different animals as compared to the one I live near.
Elizabeth Kiddle
We love the zoo here because well there is no other one in Alaska. I'm really happy they put in a little park for the kids near the pavilion so there is a covered place to eat nearby the bathrooms.
Amber Sluss
Many areas are blocked off im assuming due to covid, but the prices are still the same. Would be better if they told you that ahead of time or offered lower ticket pricing due to that. Everything is also overgrown and makes it harder to see the animals.
N Taylor
Visited this zoo, nice looking place, majority of the animals were sleeping, not sure if they tranquilize them or not. Other than that it was fun learning about the animals!!!
Terry Jones
Beautiful zoo all the animals and grounds were very good. A very good visit . Highly recommend
RJ Escalante
Really nice lay out of the place with lots of interesting animals to see. Some of the areas - outside the viewing windows of the seals and the dining area near the playgrd need more maintenance tho as these appeared to be not so clean.
Kaleigh Gaffney
Best zoo I’ve ever been to! Much more nature-y and not your typical concrete sidewalks and manicured lawns kind of zoo. Many unique animals.
Shari Gilbert Mitchell
Neat, clean, easy access and animals are well cared for!!
GenHazard
Great zoo to explore. Wonderful exhibit's, though could use some better amenities as far as food goes. Just a small coffee shop with minimal snacks.
Wynona Mills
They were amazing. The wolf keeper was so amazing. He made sure my husband had his dream come true. Keep up the good work. Love you guys.
Conner Erickson
Nice zoo for Alaska. Decent array of wild animals, both native and non-native. Gift shop and snack bar available. Plentiful parking. Friendly staff.
jana h. ginter
Nice small zoo. Very kid oriented. Can walk the whole zoo and not be exhausted. Saw many people struggling with strollers on the gravel trails.
DeAnne Shellenbarger
We had a great time, each exhibit had great informational signs and the animals are well taken care of. Admission prices were great, military discount is available.
Ana Bering
Family friendly zoo. The natural enclosures create very relaxed vibe. Coffee shop yielded tasty treats and warm beverages .
Yum!
Johanna Piekarski
There is a large variety of animals, and has a very well set-up, although there are many animals that aren't able to be there, but there's plenty for you to enjoy. Also I recommend to go during the winter, because the animals are more active so they can stay warm, and it won't be as busy.
Brad Bliton
Great place to take the kids and spend a day. There is always something unique and the animals are amazing. The snow leopards are beautiful and are a true rarity to see.
Quaker Oats
The Zoo is awesome, plenty of parking, and nice gift shop. Some of the animals tend to shy away from the public and hide. The wolves, bears, and musk ox is a sight to see.
S Topgyal (Sontop)
Worth seeing before venturing into Denali.
Elizabeth Hughes-Hageman
Great, Covid-safe, thing to do with the kids. Playground and easy trails combined with petting zoo = *chefs kiss*
Pamela Jepsen
Best zoo I have ever visited. The variety of animals there is amazing and most are there for their own safety. Beautiful setting, great staff and free shuttle from downtown Anchorage.
Nadya Hess
The zoo is little, but feels cozy. I lover all the flower baskets in the summer! They have story time for the little ones. Fun thing to do with kids.
Debbie Hanning
We love our Alaska Zoo. The animals were out in the sun today it was beautiful
Shannon Fox
Small cute zoo
Cyndy Lopez
Nice to see some animals, unfortunately the petting zoo was closed. With the cold weather several off exhibit signs.. which is good the animals are being cared for.
We will try again this summer.
Jim Kelly
Nice place and while not big the local animals and helpful volunteers make for a pleasant day.
Dublin Anondson
Been coming here since I was a kid. The animals are all native to the climate and are either orphaned or rescued. It's all outside in the woods so gravel paths extend all around. Paths are all wheelchair accessible.
Swishy Fishy
You wanna see Alaska Animals? You wanna take your kids out for a few hours? Gotta kill some time and want to do something that won't leave you bored, come here. It's neat to see animals you don't usually see in zoos. If you felt you've missed any alaska animals and you feel bad for missing it,come here. It's not too pricey and staff are nice.
Eli F-F
It's pretty small as zoo's go, and a visit can last you a few years, but I remember really liking it as a kid and on field trips, so I'd say it's pretty good for that.
HW Ellie
Liked that all the animals are native to the environment and many were rescued. However, many enclosures were difficult to see animals in. The map was confusing as were the signs along the path. Seemed to need some updating.
Tamara Myers
Small zoo yet a lot to see
Grace Anderson
It's a small zoo, but a fun place to spend some time with the little ones.
Joe Barron
We had a really good time. It's a smaller zoo but a lot more animals than I expected (especially during the winte) and I thought it was played out very well.
Jonathan Hamilton Jr
The zoo was alright, but it would have been great had there been more animals to see.
Heather Lam
Great little zoo with many unique animals like Tibetan yaks, wolverines, and snow leopards. It also has a really nice gift shop with goods from local artisans.
Louis Smith
I love this place. Four stars because I've been to big city zoos. This is small, but a great place. People who call it depressing clearly don't understand that this place helps orphaned and wounded animals. It isn't meant to be a big city zoo.
Mat Pyles
Great day with my family
Chris Betts
Very nice zoo showcasing a lot of native wildlife to Alaska as well as playing an important role in conservation efforts. Staff was very friendly and informative.
Shauna B
Love the zoo! Discovery tour is the way to go. A little more expensive but you get the guided tour behind the scenes and it's so cool!
Sharon Palacios
My kids enjoyed their time here so much. We went later in the evening but unfortunately it was still to hot for the polar bears . We still had an awesome experience with the other animals
Mark Stodola
They pack a lot in to such a small zoo. I applaud their commitment to their mission of rescuing animals and finding homes for them.
Epic Earth Inc.
I have been to zoos all around the world and have and have even worked as a guide and naturalist at a AZA facility in California. This is a world class zoo right in my backyard. It's well laid out and nestled in the trees of an Alaskan hillside. Of course there are limitations to an outdoor zoo in Alaska but they do well and the animals and displays are well cared for. I go a few times a year with out of town adults and local friends. It's not huge, but it well done.
Ryan Jensen
I love this zoo. I love animals. Most of the animals were resting. It was nice though. Not very much people there.
Terter
It was a nice relaxing visit. The exhibits were clean and the animals seemed happy, and I didn't get any poop flung at me!
Jessica Stenger
Some empty enclosures, and wish the ones that had animals were larger... They all need some updating but overall the animals seem happy enough, which is the most important.
gengi web
The exotic animals are very pleasant i learned a few new things there however some was quarantined but thats fine i remember coming here when I was 5 so very nostalgic to me speaking of 5 its stars for me
Kelsey Moore
The polar bear was the best!!! Loved all the informational signs too.
Kim Stepka
I visited right after Christmas & it was beautifully decorated. So clean. All animals are rescues who can no longer live in the wild, and are indigenous to the area. I learned so much! A treasure!
Tommy Wheeler
I went here when I was a little kid. I took my wife and son today and had a excellent time. Beautiful grounds and animals. Added quite a few things since I was there about 15 years ago.
CA G
A good place to see exotic and alaskan animals. They have a great gift shop and petting zoo for their goat population. It's a great place to bring your family if they have never seen these types of animals.
Sean Ling
Had a wonderful time with family
Kim Murphy
Great Zoo Lights Night. We had a lot of fun despite rain, hail, snow and Wind. Lights were beautiful.
Ashmeet Singh Rekhi
Have seen better zoos. It wasn't bad.
Meghan Phillips
I like that a fair amount if the animals were obtained bc they were injured and prob wouldn't survive the wild (rather than caging healthy, able animals).
Keep a sharp eye out driving, no lead up signage and the zoo sneaks up on you, esp comingbfrom Birch.
Zac Keyes
Was able to walk around in a hour, went during a snow storm so there wasn't many people there. My toddler loved it. Only wish it was a little bigger.
Darcy Boerner
Awesome experience! One of my kids wanted to see a moose while we were in Alaska. The zoo offered that and so much more. Great day at the zoo but wear walking shoes
Lynda Gauthier
Beautiful day for a visit to the Anchorage Zoo. Love all the critters
Lisa K
Enjoyed walking around on a sunny day-. Alot of the animals could not be seen & a few exhibits closed for remodel. Liked the layout. Seen it, done it kind of zoo.
CHERYL Bowlin
Small zoo, layed out well for space it has. Seeing a wolverine was pretty cool. Black bears weren't out of hibernation yet but brown bears were enjoying the sun
michael pietschker
Nice zoo very clean with good variety of animals with some very well thought out viewing areas. Price for entry was very reasonable a very nice way to spend the day if in the area.
The Little Racoon
Very nice and had weal chair accessible paths
Adriana Fisher
Fun outing with kids, good safe covid practices in place!
Norma Robinson
Fascinating animals, informative signage. Late morning and early afternoon were able to see lots of activity.
Chris R
Great little zoo for little kids. The perfect amount for little ones to walk around and see all Alaska and the Arctic have to offer. Prices are reasonable as well. Check out the annual pass for a great deal.
Patrick Swayne
We're members, so we visit the zoo often. It's very well presented and the perfect size for a good walk with a toddler.
