Reviews of The Kenwood
Kimberly Werner
I posted a review about a year ago extolling the virtues of The Kenwood and how happy my mother was there. At that time, she had been living at The Kenwood for a few months. Now, a year later, we are just as pleased. I say "we" because having her so happy and well cared for not only makes me happy, it also means I don't need to worry. I highly recommend The Kenwood. While my mother uses a wheelchair and needs a certain level of assistance, I see residents of all levels of independence, and everyone seems to be happy and enjoying life.

Excellent staff, nice apartments, many programs for residents and transportation to key areas of the city. The Kenwood is located near Hennepin Avenue where there are many businesses available to residents. We can't say enough about Karen Edberg, who was (and is) always available and who made our transition from Oregon to Minneapolis seamless. Many of the staff have been here for years, which speaks to the good relationship between management, staff and residents. We look forward to many happy years here.

If you are looking for an assisted living facility for yourself or loved one you have found it. The Kenwood is really an amazing place. Staff are absolutely fabulous, all of them! The building is very nice, interesting activities and the most impressive thing is that everyone I’ve talked to that lives at The Kenwood loves it, I mean they really love it. You can feel the upbeat positive vibe throughout the facility. The Kenwood should be a blueprint on how to do Assisted Living right. Kudos to everyone there for having such a great place! So thankful!

My parents left their home of 62 years and crossed state lines—during Covid, post Floyd uprising—to live at The Kenwood. Though nothing about the timing of their arrival was ideal, they have settled in beautifully. The friendly and helpful Kenwood staff have made them feel welcome and invigorated, and they are getting to know others as social activities spring back to life. My folks are joiners; they sit in the front row during yoga and movies and are first in line to hear concerts at Lake Harriet. They like the independence of their own kitchen—and making me run around town for groceries. I believe they feel “at home” at The Kenwood. And I have peace of mind that they have the support they need to live independently. Also, The Kenwood was among the first senior buildings to get access to the vaccine—a HUGE relief for me! The protocols kept residents safe, and now my 90-something mom and dad are flourishing.

The Kenwood is a wonderful place. Everyone is so friendly, both the staff and the residents. You couldn't ask for nicer people. Mom's seventh-floor apartment has lots of windows and light, and room for everything she wanted to bring with her when she moved in two years ago, including her piano. It's an easy walk to the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden and an even easier walk to a beautiful neighborhood park a block away. They have a very nice dining room in the building that serves good food, where I occasionally joined Mom for meals pre-Covid. During the last year and a half, the staff at the Kenwood has kept all the residents safe, and I truly appreciate that. I am so grateful for that. But I very much hope Mom never has to go through another round of extreme isolation again. The people who live at the Kenwood are an independent, energetic, accomplished group, who engage with life and the community. And they, together with the equally wonderful and accomplished people who work there, make it the good place to live that it is. Highly recommend.

The Kenwood has been providing a warm and supportive community for my brother. He has felt comfortable, safe and well-cared for through the pandemic and local unrest. He has made good friends and has especially enjoyed the activities within the building. The nursing care has been kind and thoughtful and communicated well with his family.

I moved my mother to The Kenwood three to four months ago and we both could not be happier. Previously she had been in a "good" facility in another state. Her experience at The Kenwood has been far superior to anything we ever dreamed of. It is worth noting that my mother uses a wheelchair and requires assistance with transfers. The staff at The Kenwood quickly learned what works best with my mother on those transfers. Equally, or maybe even more importantly, they provide this assistance with dignity and courtesy. So not only is my mother getting the assistance that she needs, nobody is treating her like a burden.
Of course, no place is perfect and we have encountered a few small issues, particularly as part of her transition. The Director was immediately responsive and then followed up. Any place that depends so much on staff will have an issue at some point, but the level of responsiveness turned these small issues into positives because my mother knows that if she has a concern she will be heard.
It's worth noting that the staff are wonderful. I was told this and now I have seen it. Again, my mother previously was in an assisted living facility. It is a real breath of fresh air to feel that The Kenwood staff actually like their jobs.
There are more positives. The activities are multiple, diverse and of good quality. As are the residents. I think these two things go hand in hand. I would describe The Kenwood as a community of vibrant, out-going older people. While they may need some degree of assistance, they are very much alive!
The food is also excellent and varied. The variety is especially worth noting. Even good food can get boring if you've seen it too often so I am especially impressed by the continued fresh takes on the menu.
The location is also a plus. The Kenwood is just off the highway, so I can get there from my house in Como in just minutes. It's probably easy to get to from just about anywhere in Minneapolis. For me this makes it easy to stop in to drop something off, say hello, etc. and not feel like its a big deal because I had to drive so far. The immediate neighborhood is beautiful and the Walker Arts Center and Sculpture Garden are just a few blocks north. A short distance to the south on Hennepin Ave is Kowalski's Market and several of our favorite restaurants are in the Uptown area.
I've done my best to provide objective reasons why we are so pleased with The Kenwood, but the best part for me is knowing how happy my mother is.

The Kenwood is a very good community for people in need of assistance. My mother has been well served by the Kenwwod staff for 5+ years. Is it perfect? No. I believe most assisted living facilities suffer from the same problems. The best things about the Kenwood are the location and the people who live there and the activities programming and the van. My mother has made lots of new and supportive friends there.

My mother lives here and you couldn't ask for a better senior community. The staff is wonderful. The protections they put in place and enforced during Covid resulted in zero (0) residents contracting the virus. Zero. They are constantly evaluating and looking for better processes and outcomes for the residents. A gem of a place.

I moved my parents here a year and a half ago. It is like sending your big kids to camp. It has been a very positive experience. There are lots of activities for them to do, the people are interesting and have a wealth of backgrounds. They have outings to Baseball games, the Orchestra, Museums, movies and anything else you can come up with. The staff has bent over backwards to be kind and helpful. I can't say enough about how patient everyone has been.
The facilities themselves may need an update, but giving up the cosmetics for the rest is a no-brainer. My parents really are enjoying themselves, and the comfort that I have knowing they're safe and don't need me for all their entertainment has been a life saver. I highly recommend it for curious seniors who want to go to an endless sleep-away camp!

My grandfather lives at The Kenwood. Recently he has needed more services and it was seamless to add additional nursing care. Moreover, the people who have helped and responded to my grandfather have been stellar. Before he needed extra help, Rosa-in housekeeping-was always so kind and attentive to him without ever needing to ask- she went beyond her job to genuinely care for him. Thank you!!!

We're delighted with our decision 14 years ago to move to The Kenwood. We love being in the city — being near major streets when we chose to use our car, and having options for public bus routes or the Kenwood van. Lively conversation and interesting people are readily at hand. This is the right place for us.

The staff of The Kenwood go beyond their 'job descriptions' to help any resident...the facilities were intelligently designed to provide various
types of spaces for various tenant needs...after living in a lovely neighborhood looking at Lake of the Isles for 29 years, we found the residents of The Kenwood to be the most interesting community of
personalities we ever lived in.

Welcoming community, caring staff, wide range of activities, quality apartments, delicious food. I recommend The Kenwood to others often!

There are so many fascinating seniors here - people who have had interesting professional lives. They're well-cared for and seem to look forward to the events planned. This is living, not just waiting....

Love living in the place, including all the workers, main complaint is the elevators.
