Really cool shop that makes you feel like you're traveling back in time! Large variety of records, cassettes, DVDs, VHS tapes, books and more. Has zines and local art as well. Great vibes and music!
Alex Padgett
Nice little record store with lots of other cool things. Very reasonable prices on vinyl. Very nice selection for the size of the store as well. In general just a nice little spot to go, and spend some time sorting through records, old media stuff, oddities ect. The staff has always been very helpful and polite as well.
M.E. Francis
Fantastic spot! So many funky old VHS treasures. Bought a new age CD that I liked when I was a kid. A fun spot to browse and hang.
Rick Cutright
Great place to take your kids to revisit how we experienced music and media in the “ancient times” before digital and app stores. CDs, albums, 8 tracks, comics, etc, etc.
Robert Holmes
This place is sick - jammed to the gills with books, music, art, and any other random thing they think people might be interested in. Found a Robert Frost anthology in great condition! Gotta come willing to hunt, that's part of the fun!
Hayley
Service amazing. Bought a super cool shirt. Guy working was in a band, was friendly/warm, & gave us great bar recommendations. :)
J Archer
Plenty of exciting eccentricities and a truly wonderful staff.
Amanda Dolan
Absolutely LOVE this gem of a store. Amazing selection of old school collectibles- vhs tapes, vinyl, Knick-knacks etc. Staff was so helpful and fun! Such a funky treasure trove for unique collectors!

Perfect retro 'hole in the wall' shop. Loved the self released section

Checked this place out when visiting Maine. Wasn’t let down by the amount of obscure media and things not seen in other places. Vinyl, Cassettes, VHS, Laserdisc, CEDs, 8Tracks, reel to reel tapes even! and a decent selection of vintage video games. So onto my personal experience: when first walking in the store felt like it was smaller, but upon walking around there was much more size to it. As I mentioned, lots of obscure formats. The VHS was fairly priced. Not your $1 thrift store VHS. Horror and hard to find tapes, but even then $3 is a steal on some of the films they had. I took a look at the CEDs and the two I picked out were unmarked so the worker and I negotiated a great price on them. I didn’t take a look at the vinyl, but the cassettes were pretty good. Lots of hard to find titles, and the 8Tracks were a nice touch to see. Not many record stores supply them. Overall great experience for the 20 minutes I spent and great prices

The single coolest collector's store I've ever been in. Wonderful staff, vibe, and inventory.
lor
pretty interesting shop in downtown Portland!! the only downside is the size of the store because it can be alittle cramped when busy, but definitely a fun shop to browse around!!

As far as vintage type shops go, Strange Maine is without question one of my favorites. It's a bit small, but it adds to the atmosphere. Employees are super chill and friendly, there's awesome variety amongst the music sold there, an awesome section that sells retro and some more modern video games, as well as sections for Magazines, Comics, Books, and VHS's. Everything is very reasonably priced, and categorized. I love this place. I come in at least once a week just to look around, and usually leave with at least one record tucked under my arm.

This place is so cool! Has so much to choose from and the guy working there is nice. Definitely stop in and check this strange hole into he wall out. Great prices too!
Jessica Spoto
What a wonderfully strange place! Great customer service! Such a cool atmosphere and such awesome unique vibes! I have been buying and selling vintage for 8 years and let me just say, they have super awesome stuff here! If I could I totally would internship or something with them! Like they are that cool of a place :)

Got a record player for Christmas, so headed out today for my first record-buying experience in at least 30 years. Strange Maine was recommended as good place to start for used records. Great choice. Smallish but jam-packed with extensive selection. Will be heading back from time-to-time to find more perfect albums.
Andrew Antropow
This is a smaller store but they effectively use the space to give you as much of a selection as possible. Lots of records, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, toys and collectibles.

I’ve spent two strange afternoons in this store, during my last visit a homeless man came in trying to sell the owner a sign that he said he was told to bring to him in a dream. Overall the store lives up to its name very well and in all seriousness anyone looking for a record or movie they can’t find anywhere else should poke in and take a look around. You never know what you’ll find at Strange Maine.

I was visiting town from Berlin and I noticed all the record stores on the main street and they all kinda look the same. Then I saw this place and in two words packed all the magic needed. This is the town where Stephen King was born, I gotta get me some Strange Maine!
These people are not playing a part they are genuine music lovers, with an extensive knowledge of any genre, a big heart and offer you an extensive collection of records you won't find anywhere else. Before the internet was a thing there were places like this and sure you could probably find a lot of these things on Ebay but what you won't find is the guidance to understand which things are going to show you the rainbow of oddities that is American pop culture. Let your guard down and let these people be your guides.

It’s a super cool place with a laid back atmosphere! The owner was super nice and there was SO much cool stuff. Vintage, retro, just plain weird; you can find it all there. 10/10 recommend. Total bucket list material!

Strange Maine is my go to store for finding weird VHS tapes. I don't live in Maine anymore, but any time I'm in Portland I make sure to hit them up!
They also have a large selection of vinyl, cassette tapes, and a variety of books and older video games.
If you like places with character, this is a must.
Adam Wetterhan
Correctly titled. Nice assortment of niche used records. Made me want to purchase bizarre world music, obscure noise, and disco singles all on one visit. Nice selection of used books along the same lines
Angelica Veitch
Great, weird space with a good selection of LPs. Owner (?) or person at the counter reminded me a little of the bookstore owner in Black Books but that just kind of adds to the ambience. I’m definitely going to do some holiday shopping here.
Jocelyn Beane
One of the absolute must-go shops in Portland. So much cool stuff you'll flip your lid! Vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, books, comics, zines, video games, DVDs, VHS, toys, random ephemera, your wildest hopes and dreams... great staff, too.
Ivan Marrinson
Need a cassette? they’ve got it. needed VHS? They’ve got it. Looking for an n64? Dreamcast? Comics? Weird local records? They have it all. And at a strangely good price. So strange, this place is strange, everything old is new again everything new is only needed by the bourgeoisie. Hey man I’m just trying not because you don’t know how to get to me I love y’all and I’ll let y’all go get some rest of your stuff I don’t want y’all going back in town and I just got to get a little behind you are so busy.
Zachary Goater
This place has a lot going for it: decent vinyl selection, retro games and obscure books. The things going against it: unfriendly staff, a pungent hipster vibe and a crowded space. Strangely, All this doesn't do enough to subtract from the quality of the inventory or the equitable prices. An okay place, if a little STRANGE.
Ronda Lee
Alot of Kool old-school stuff,music,movies,games
No posters though..

One stop I always make when up north is Strange Maine. After years of return visits I have yet to leave empty handed. Always worth the trip!

Eclectic space with a wonderful variety of vinyl...found some really great and obscure vinyl there. Everything from Czech anarcho-punk to non-label pop punk from Keene, NH
Heather Mack
Amazing treasure trove of retro oddball goodies, cult VHS tapes, records and ephemera. Not to be missed.
Samuel Elliott
On top of being incredibly quirky strange Maine has a great book selection for young adults and children in the corner of the store. Also for those passing by there is always a very amusing display at the window.

Lots of vinyl records, tapes, early video games, and comic books. Comfortable atmosphere and knowledgeable staff.

Mostly vintage vinyls and classic VHS sets, everything you need to pour over the shelves and reminisce about movies that used to terrify you as a child (Deep Rising).

They know what they have so the prices are what to expect. Good for people looking for something specific (with money) and bad for people looking for random good deals.
