Reviews of Buckdancer's Choice Music Co.
If I lived here, I'd be positively delighted to have such a great local music shop. One of my friends does live in Portland and has been buying guitars here for decades, so I stopped in to check it out. The place blows away national chain stores, no one bothers you, but the peeps are available if you are actually ready to do some impulse spending on a new axe. Their selection of acoustic guitars is particularly impressive for a little local joint, and I was astonished that they have several hundred efx pedals available as well.
Even if you don't think you need a new guitar in your life, it's the kind of place that's great fun to come as find out for sure.
ALDEN! Was awesome. We stopped by on vacation to check out some local music stores and this one was my favorite.
Great selection! Some pretty legendary pieces of equipment in there, lots of baritone guitars too! If I had less impulse control I could spend so much money there.
But more importantly, my dude Alden was super friendly, welcoming, and knowledgable! I mentioned we were from out of town and he recommended some cool places to go, so we did and had a great time!
S tier music store employee
This place is excellent and I'll tell you why. I am new to the guitar and I was shopping around for my first electric. I had been to their big box competitor in SOPO and had a poor experience. Staff seemed not interested, pushed credit cards and warrantee deals, and talked smack about customers that called in the moment they hung up the phone. Buckdancer's was the opposite. I've been in three times now for a guitar, amp, strings, capo and a few other odds and ends. Every time their staff are super helpful, not pushy, and great at providing options. The first time I went in I did not really know how to play much so the staff member plugged into a few amps and showed their features for me. How cool is that.
Brought my guitar in for repairs. Got stellar service from Alden. So helpful, knowledgeable, kind, polite, serving, sweet and cute. I can say that because I'm old enough to be his mother :-) Loved speaking with him and felt like I left my guitar in good hands!
I've been a patron of Buckdancer's for years. I've purchased multiple guitars, ukulele's, a merlin, a keyboard, a mic set up and a host of other items like strings, picks, straps, stands, etc. Buckdancer's is the epitome of local and why to buy local. I've never been disappointed by them, on the contrary, always impressed with service, personal attention, effort, selection of great gear and instruments. I can't imagine shopping elsewhere for instruments, tune ups or the like. Big box competitors have nothing on this place! I can't recommend or support their mission enough! When I work with musicians who need emergency support, I recommend buckdancer's choice!
Amazing inventory and super knowledgeable. Phineas was very generous with his time and advice on a couple of potential repairs. We'll be back.
Went above and beyond to get my amp up to speed and the price was amazing! Estimated turnaround was a week but they had it done in about 24 hours. Super nice people too. I can’t recommend them enough!
This place is a gem! They have some really special guitars in here. It’s nice they let you play and give you a chance to check stuff out! 10 out of 10!
I’ve been buying guitars here for 20 years. Always will come back.
Also, the older gentleman with the grey beard and ponytail does nice work and would recommend him for neck resets and has a great knowledge of the guitar.
I was on vacation, visiting Portland, and popped into Buckdancers. I bought a cable. Test-drove some guitars & amps. Really cool vibe. Great staff… If I lived in town I’d buy my gear here.
Buckdancer's is a great local business with a staff that are knowledgeable, friendly and eager to help with selecting the right gear you need. I love to browse their ever changing selection, or stop in just to try a new guitar!
I have an old Guild guitar that had been packed away for years. I thought it was past the point of no return. I brought it in for a tune up and found out that it would take a good bit more than that. It plays beautifully now and the final bill for all the work that was done that was extremely reasonable--far less than they estimated. I also bought a guitar for my daughter there. The price was the same as on Amazon and better than what the Guitar Center wanted. I'm not a "buy local" person if there is a big price difference, but this is one place I would definitely go to have work done on a guitar and if your shopping around for something new (or used). Can't beat the customer service.
Visited here when we took a long weekend vacation to Portland in May. Extensive, wonderful choices for instruments, great salespeople. I found a wonderful Schecter electric & fell in love. Bought it, a string broke that night when I was trying to tune it in my hotel room. I went back the next day to buy a new set of strings; they replaced the broken one for free, and threw in the new strings for my trouble! Fantastic service!
Great help before and after the sale. Phinneas really went above and beyond to provide advice and service on a warranty issue of my Little Martin guitar. There is no reason to go anywhere else.
This is the best guitar store in Maine with knowledgeable and friendly staff. They also sell gig and studio gear , keyboards, effect pedals and more. They also offer music lessons and guitar tuneups and repairs, I highly recommend them for all your music needs.
Went in today looking for a used Banjo for my kid. They had a lot to choose from and the guy confirmed my hunch that the cheapest one, an old used Hondo, would be the best fit for my son. Plenty of ways they could've at least tried to up-sell me, but none of that. I really appreciated it. Beyond that, I would say, they had a great big selection and didn't seem overpriced. Grateful to know they exist in Portland.
Excellent customer service from Nels. He set up a vocal harmony pedal for me to try and showed me how it worked before I bought it. Then he set it all up again for me a few days later because it wasn't working. Turns out it was simply a faulty cord I was using, and thanks to Nels' patience and help it's working fine.
I also saw that Buckdancer's has a great selection of ukuleles--not just beginner ukes typically found at music stores. They carry some high-end ukukeles (and even Worth ukulele strings which I've never seen in a brick-and-mortar store before).
Left my Martin guitar to be fixed. Staff happy to help and they're checking with Martin Co. to see if it's under warranty! Picked up my guitar today Martin Waranty. It didn't cost me a dime! Thank you to the staff at Buckdancers.
Great guys and awesome service. They can fix anything
Great selection of electronic music gear solid customer service. So glad to have a local shop in Portland!!!
I have a storytelling business and was looking for a portable microphone/speaker system to use for live storytelling events. I went to Buckdancer's Choice and worked with Tim to find just the right system for exactly what I needed. Prices were very competitive to the big online stores but with the added benefit of expert advice. Highly recommend Buckdancer's for all of your music and sound system needs.
I've been buying gear at Buckdancer's ever since my dad took me there as a kid (I'm 30 now). They've always carried more and had a better selection than any of the larger chain stores that have moved into town. They're knowledgeable and a pleasure to do business with. Every time I go anywhere else I ask myself why I wasted my time and always go back to Buckdancer's. I have lived all over the state and always make the trip to shop there. I am currently looking for a Tele and my first stop will be Buckdance's Choice.
An amazing shop. Well worth the trip and visit. Friendly staff.
Great store. Guitar players "Toys R Us"! o sales pressure, and you don't feel like you need to shower after leaving the store.
Only place I shop.
Great customer service. Nice people.
Good selection, good service. Wasn’t hounded by any creeps like at guitar center. They let you play the guitars and amps and find the one that feels right to you.
Brought my Spector bass in to get set up, they did a great job, and even when I brought it back in to have a little tweak in the action done after I played it at home they fixed it with a smile right then, no questions asked.
Great local music shop with a knowledgeable staff. Amazing selection of guitars, amps, pedals, you name it.
Very friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. Happy to show every amp and ax in the place!
Big store, wide variety of new and used instruments and gear. Nice staff. Found what I wanted and more. Check 'em out.

I own a Quilter Mach ll where I was frustrated in achieving a clear Jazz tone !! I tried just the amp's settings then added effects then back to just the amp settings , and finally different guitars !! I came to Buckdancers in search of a high end tube amp , but not a Fender, Boogie, etc .. I chatted with one of the store's owners (Tim) who by chance has and plays the same Quilter Mach ll amp !! He suggested in me trying his amp's settings thoughts !! After working with Tim's amp settings suggestions, I was able to achieve where I needed to be !! Two days later, i went back to Buckdancers in buying the Quilter Mach lll head , for it's my 62 birthday 🎂 in surviving a complicated heart surgery !! Buckdancers is the place for your musical needs !! Stay Positive. !!
