I started going to this record shop in the early 2000’s when I was hanging out at Skelletones. In between bands, my friends and I would stop in to Vertigo and dream about having every album we couldn’t afford at the time. They keep an update stock of new and current music, as well as a large supply of old, vintage, and other rarities, and their pricing is very competitive and sensible. The vibe is a little discombobulated, and the store can feel a little cramped on busier days, but that is just part of its charm. New/big box stores cannot emulate the feeling you get walking into Vertigo. Being an independent record store in a medium sized town and surviving for decades should be enough to instill faith in Vertigo as a store, so if buying records, tapes, or CDs is your thing, Vertigo is a local staple and a must-see. Highly recommended!

I stumbled upon this record store in downtown Grand Rapids. It is, without a doubt, one of the best organized shops I’ve been in. Hats off to the staff for making a better shopping experience. They have an inventory of about 2/3 LPs, 1/3 CDs and some cassettes in the mix. The selection of new and used vinyl are again about 1/4 new and 3/4 used. They seem to be discerning in the used LPs they take. There is a good mix of genres. The employee working was extremely helpful with locating items. He even found a near mint condition LP for me. He went above and beyond to help me package my LP for travel. This led to a discussion about packaging LPs for shipment. I saw first hand that Vertigo carefully packages items in LP specific shipping cardboard. I’ll plan to be back for future purchases online or when I visit Grand Rapids again. A great, if not exemplary example of a quality record shop

Not sure how they're making money since their prices are usually even cheaper than Amazon. Definitely the best record shop in West Michigan. Staff is incredibly friendly and make even a first timer feel like a regular. Usually when I travel I check out other town's local record shops and they never compare to Vertigo. Even the top rated in Chicago sucked compared to here. Large, diverse selection of every audio format.

This is the best record store I've ever been to. The selection is huge and includes everything from anime OSTs--my favorite being the OST for "Ghost in the Shell"--to indie darlings like Japanese Breakfast and Joanna Newsom. There's never an air of arrogance or self-importance from the folks who work here, either. You can tell they're all such genuine music lovers and they're really happy to offer a recommendation, help out with questions about buying and playing vinyl, or compliment a purchase (which always makes me feel super cool; part of the fun is trying to impress them with your picks). Vertigo has been in business for a long time for a reason. I've been in the store when they've had visitors from all over the state and country. Stepping inside feels like having the coolest older siblings with an amazing record collection and a "Hey bud, how ya doin'?" We're really lucky to have a place like this in Grand Rapids.

Vertigo music is the perfect record shop. The floors are wooden and creaky, the music is loud and unashamed, and it has THAT smell in there. These people sell tons of used and new records, CDs, tapes, and DVDs. Like, an insane amount of music is here. To the point where it would be overwhelming if it weren't so perfectly organized. They keep the new and used records separate which is awesome. Super friendly staff that you'd expect at a record shop, too. Can't say enough about this place!

I didn't grow up in Grand Rapids, so I'm always learning from lifelong residents about shops and restaurants and other businesses that used to be staples of the community, their closings and sometimes demolitions causing grief and bittersweet nostalgia in the natives of this region. Over the course of my 21 years as a Grand Rapids resident, I have come to understand that sense of associating a store with the same integral connection ordinarily reserved for close friends and family members. See, there's this record store downtown. And it's alive. It's like a family member. The lifeblood coursing through its veins is your favorite songs, your least favorite song, your next favorite songs and the vessels and arteries are physical artifacts, be it vinyl pressed in the 1960's and dug out of the basement or 180 gram repressed shiny new albums with 2 star Pitchfork ratings, or compact discs, the kind that sound good in car stereos from the late eighties to the early aughts. These tomes are physical evidence that the music we love deserves to have a physical presence and be cared for and protected as if it were the only copy left in the world. Hooray for P×ndora and Sp×tify, but have you ever listened to an album from beginning to end on your phone? Or did you discover that there is reward, and even treasure if you dig deep enough and often enough in the musty stacks of 12 inch wax, etched into the shiny black disc and meant for an ACTIVE listening experience on your dad's record player or your $2k Swedish floating audiophile altar to the gods of music? I'm telling you, the store is alive and the staff are the mitochondria and the caretakers of every beat and riff that ever made you feel alive yourself and the proprietor is a Druid on the Isle of Skye defying the entire Roman Empire and the digital media age at once. He also sold me a moped when I was like 23, and sometimes I think he gives me like 10% off of rap CD's, which is cool. Anyway, check it out if you haven't, I would be lying if I told you that it (the store) has been an integral part of my life and my survival over the past two decades. Uncle Vertigo, I'll call it. Family for life. And they have t-shirts, too.

Cool old school record shop, specializing in New and used vinyl LPs. Lots of other mediums like CDs, DVDs, VHS and cassettes as well. Owner was very knowledgeable and eager to assist patrons. Remember to put away any valuables visible in your car when parking along this stretch of Division Street.

My son bought a new turntable. So we went to a few different record shops. This by far had the best selection of different genres. From rap to classical. And the prices were more than fair. They both only have lps but a whole room of 45s and they also have cassettes and CDs.

Love this store! For me, it's like a trip down memory lane going to the mall record store in the 80s. I visited two record stores, and this was the best by far. Things are well organized, it's easy to browse through sections, and most importantly, prices are good. I was mainly in the jazz albums and they had a good variety to choose from, with some stuff underneath too (probably overstock). Very competitive prices, and the people all very chill. I would absolutely go back if I was in the area.

Herm and the rest of his team are extremely friendly, if you're looking for anything in particular ask right away and they'll point you in the right direction, otherwise you can spend hours in here looking over the massive library of albums. If they don't have what you're looking for, they will order it for you no problems. Prices are practically always at the same price as online or even less, It's a gem of a store!

I'm from Lansing so my loyalties are to another, but Vertigo is great. My wife teaches nearby, so I drive her when I can so I can look through their bins and crawl around on the adequately clean floors looking for fun stuff for as long as I have. Their dollar selections are a mix of really bad stuff, really common stuff and then some surprisingly good stuff in good condition. Some pretty good stuff sneaks in there. Not that prices are bad anywhere else in the large store. Very good punk selection. Very good Indie. Good electronica. Solid Jazz. Excellent used rock. Really across the board. Parking can be an issue though.

The shelves are fairly well organized by genres and in alphabetical order. There's a bit of clutter and dust so don't expect it to be easy to navigate through this grungy wonderland, but it's fun to dig through the $1 section and the boxes full of vinyl records under the more organized shelves to find a treasure.

Here it is folks, the #1 record store in Michigan and maybe even the midwest and beyond. Vertigo stocks more new vinyl than anyone, period. And the used section is pretty full too. New and used are separated and all genres are included. Located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, this shop has a historic atmospheric style with its creaky wooden floors and high ceilings. The owner Herm, greats every regular by name and welcomes newcomers wholeheartedly. You'll also get a fair value for your gently used vinyl. All fine attributes but what sets the store apart are the prices which are the cheapest I've seen for new and competitive for used. Do yourself a favor and stop by Vertigo today. Chances are you'll become a regular too.

This place is the new quintessential record place. Nothing fancy, ever expense spared. But the staff live for music. If you went inside a movie and found the most music person to ever run an album cd DVD tape store you will find these guys. Their knowledge of music and bands is only matched for their love of it. You don't need a fancy building or atmosphere when they are the atmosphere. They can teach you educate you and enlighten you all at the same time. This place is good, but these people's passion is what makes it great. And the rare finds here are plentiful and since the staff loves this stuff so much finding it is a snap because they already know where it is.

It can be a year and still get greated by name and pointed to something I like. A few years ago Herm also spent almost 15 months searching for a CD for me a few years ago. Found a copy called me and then charged me $11. You don't forget service like that. I enjoy every visit.

Since vinyl has exploded on the scene in recent years, Vertigo is a jewel in the industry. Living in Chicago a lot of our shops are picked over, and you never find what your looking for. Since I was going to GR to visit some family, I thought I would spend an afternoon checking various vinyl shops. Well it started and ended at Vertigo. 10 new albums later, I had made a new friend in Herm, who said he was more than willing to ship to Chicago! Totally changed my future vinyl hunt, and I can not wait to head back! Highly recommend! Not to mention their website features new music discovery to expand your listening pleasure. The people that floated in and out of the shop that afternoon were friendly and were willing to chat about what they were after, and provide recommendations. Its great to see the community expanding. We spent a pleasant couple hours in this shop browsing through the inventory. The gentlemen working were polite, respectful, and pleasant. A large inventory of Vinyl Records - used and new - in multiple music genres, Cassette tapes, Music CDs, DVD and BlueRay Movies. We bought a few Vinyl Albums and a few DVDs / BlueRays. Still a lot more to look through and will surely return for another visit soon.

The first and best record store Ive been to. After this one I was intrigued to check out many more record shops, ive been to some in downtown chicago and tampa yet this is the most varied and stocked record store ive been to. Classic rock from pink floyd to talking heads, rap from death grips to drake to snoop, and electronic that ranges from flume or odesza all the way to squarepushers newest warp session. Not to mention that the owners and workers are always there to help and are super friendly and very open, especially to music, as you can tell they are music lovers just like ourselves. I have a love hate with this store because they made me spend so much of my money 😂, but don't regret a penny spent. Really glad this store is here in central michigan.

Probably the best or second best selection of Metal in the entire state! Ever since I found out about this place, me and a group of friends started making a 6 hour round trip to go to this place every few months. Their new albums are priced at MSRP unlike most stores which gouge you on new stuff. They have a huge selection of used Metal with prices loosely based on the quality and rarity of the album. The owner and everyone else there is very nice and helpful. This is an old school music store and 100% worth stopping at! The building across the street can be a bit sketchy at night though, there was a guy who clearly had some mental issues or was using drugs and gave cause for alarm one time. So if you're not with a group of people or someone who can't handle themselves, you should probably go during the daylight hours.

I can't believe I've never reviewed Vertigo in all my years going. I've been a Vertigo Go-er for almost 10 years now and it's the one place that carries an enormous amount of new and used punk vinyl that gets me every time. Their new selection is another one of my favorites because they carry the GOOD new stuff. The used selection is my husbands go to for almost every single vinyl hw has ever bought and my daughter now snags at least 2 DVDs and a poster every time we walk in. All the employees are helpful and happy to be there and kind. I can't recommend stopping in here enough.

If I could live at this place I would. Whenever I go, I usually am looking for a specific album that just came out but then I end up looking for another 5-6 hours and get distracted by just how much there really is. On top of the time I spend there, I normally buy an extra 60 dollars worth of music there while I'm at it. And it's all great music too, so I can't be mad. One last thing is that it has that classic feel of going up to the register and trying to impress the worker. One time i got the guy be proud of my pick of an Angel Olsen Album and that made my entire month. I'll be coming back here no matter where I go in life.

The guy that owns this place seems really friendly when he's talking to his guy friends about music, and he's always been very smiley and chatty with my boyfriend, but the second I try to interact with him he's curt and surly. No idea why. It makes me feel really weird every time I go in, to be honest. I also asked him to special order me something a year or two ago, he took my number and then never called me. When I followed up with him he took my number again and again didn't follow through. I want to love this store, and I still go there a lot because it has a great used record selection. Just wish the interactions weren't so off putting. It feels like he has some personal beef with me, but I've barely spoken to him, so I have no idea why.
