Reviews of The Lutherie Shop

Amazing work done on Floyd Baker’s (my great-great uncle) Harmony Sovereign guitar. Floyd was a guitar maker for Sears Roebuck in Chicago making Harmony guitars. This guitar was made by co-workers for his retirement. He passed in 1955 so this guitar was made pre-then. Restoration is beautiful, sounds amazing with lots of character, the natural harmonics are clean-ringing, and I am super pleased with The Lutherie Shop’s work!

Scott is a world-class luthier, and we’re lucky to have him in Des Moines. He’s worked on several guitars of mine – including resetting the neck on my 1973 Guild. There is no level of instrument I would not entrust to Scott. He simply does great work!
Mike Lund
Fantastic place to take your guitar for repairs. He does high quality work and gets it done in a timely manner for a good price. Would highly recommend!

Scott did an incredible job on my bass guitar. I'm pretty new to playing, so I took my guitar to this shop for a restring and a setup. After I took it home, it feels like a different guitar; in a good way. It doesn't buzz when I play anymore, and it sounds incredibly warm and rich. Will absolutely be going back when I need to, so I can't recommend highly enough.

I have Martin and Guild workhorse acoustics that frankly I've drug through the mud for a couple of decades. Being mid-level guitars, I considered retiring them when I noticed the binding coming off and intonation was waning among other things. I really like the way they play, so I took them to Scott to see what he could do. I couldn't be more pleased with the price, quality of his work, and the knowledge he shared about caring for my flattops. They play better now than when I bought them, and the repairs cost significantly less than replacing them both. Best of all I get to hold on to their character and the memories that these instruments provide. Thanks Scott and look forward to working with in the future.

I'm always so impressed with Scott's work. From normal set-ups to more in-depth repairs, he always delivers top-notch results. He's honest, straightforward and works hard to give clients the best turnaround times possible. Des Moines is so lucky to have this level of luthier talent.

I feel fortunate that someone like Scott is available in the Des Moines area. I have taken many guitars to him in the past several years and have been more than satisfied with his work each and every time. A few times he worked miracles on blemishes/dings that I hadn't thought possible. He doesn't hesitate to patiently answer my questions and to share some of his extensive knowledge with me. His prices are more than reasonable for the excellent work he does and he has always treated me with honesty, fairness and respect. I would give him 6 stars if I could.

Had a somewhat disappointing unboxing of a brand new Fender Strat I ordered from their Mod Shop. Brought it in to Scott to fix some aesthetic issues under warranty and to get a set-up. All I can say is he took a real heartbreaker for me and turned it into a beauty. Highly recommend.

This is the ONLY place in Des Moines you should be taking your guitar to have serious work done. Scott is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and willing to take extra time to share some of his knowledge with you. Guitars are tools, and the Lutherie Shop expertly fine tunes them.
I brought in a brand new Les Paul Special that needed to be intonated, wouldn't stay in tune for the life of me, and the action wasn't exactly how I like it to be. I dropped the axe off with Scott, and in a couple of days got back one of the nicest playing guitars in my collection. The action is perfect, the intonation is perfect, tuning is spot on and the guitar SINGS. Again, this is THE place you want to trust with your guitar. Thanks, Scott!

Scott is a master craftsman who has been in the business for over 27 years and knows his stuff. I recently purchased a Stewart stow-away electric travel guitar and the nut slots were cut too high, causing everything in the first four frets to be noticeably sharp. After reading the stellar Google reviews, I knew I had to make the 50 minute trip. Scott took an appointment for the same day and once I arrived, had filed the nut in under 30 minutes at a very reasonable price. I will definitely take my other guitars to him when they need work.
David Reese
Highly recommended. Scott did a fantastic job straighting the neck and setting up a 1969 Rickenbacker bass.
He is by far the best luthier in this area, and is a pleasure to do business with. Do not hesitate to have him work on your vintage (or newer) guitars.
Scott Smith
Scott is the best when it comes to guitar repair. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my guitars except him. Very good prices but the work is what sells the shop. Known Scott for years. His work is top shelf.
Leonard Carlson
If you need work done on your guitar, this is the place to go! Scott is the person to fix anything that your guitar might need, and he is very reasonable. I highly recommend him.
Tim Meyer
Scott did a great job fixing a couple of the frets on my 6 string bass. He quickly figured out the issue and was able to fix it in a timely manner. Definity will go back if I have an issue with any of my other basses.

Scott had my guitar playing easier and sounding so much better in just a couple of hours. I can’t believe the difference a professional set up makes. Thanks Scott

They get it. I'm a college student. They care about their customers and recognize that the guitar is not just an instrument. At the Lutherie Shop, they are fair in price, kind, and they were willing to teach me how to repair and fix things myself so that I wouldn't go broke from taking it to a shop. They have a very quick turnaround time and its a lesser known shop so the staff gets to know you. 10/10 would recommend.
Dan Davis
They were recommended to me by Gibson when I needed a repair. They have since done a few repairs and mods for me on my both my acoustic & electric 6-strings (& also a bass). They aren't cheap. But they work they do is worth every nickel.
Update Nov '17: Just got a set-up done on my bass. 24 hr turnaround! Owner says they're moving to 86th & Hickman as soon as they can. If they've pulled up stakes, that's where they'll be. Next to Perkins he says.
Stacy Fenton
One word, awesome!!! The talented people that work here are just awesome. They do the best builds and repairs I've ever seen. If it's a nice guitar and you broke it, take it to them and they will make it new again, or you can buy one of their Built guitars. Either way you will never forget a trip into the Lutherie shop.

I’ve taken three problem guitars up to Scott and he has totally fixed every one of them. Action on each guitar is excellent as are the harmonics. Can’t say enough good things about this business.

If you are looking to get your guitar into great playing condition, fixed, or most other needs this is where ya want to go. Might be slightly higher priced then box stores, but attention to detail is high. If you live out of town call a day before. Have had 2 guitars ( 90s charvel and a drop b tele)get full setups and the difference was night and day from before. Worth my 2 hour drive.
Stephen Thompson
What a treasure to have this shop around! Brought in three old guitars so far. Wonderful work and detail! As I find them, he (Scott) repairs them.

Cracked neck on my Gibson 12 string remained broken for over 40 years before I found the Lutherie shop in Urbandale, Iowa for repair. Amazing job! . The guitar sounds better than ever and holds tune perfectly.
Gayle Walton
Trust the Luthiery Shop...they are courteous, professional and very talented. Patric repaired my expensive 10 year old Taylor guitar. The strap had slipped off while I was playing it and the body hit the tile floor resulting in a splintered top. Patric did such an awesome job that you cannot tell it was ever damaged. I am delighted and amazed with their work!
Sipher Kone
Scott is well trained, personable, professional and reasonably priced. He set up my Martin Backpacker so I could play it while my hand finished healing from surgery.
Bill
I had a pick guard re-adheard. He did a great job.
Hunter Chandler

Guy Somers
Busy shop, the best workmanship, well worth the wait and the money, true artisans in their craft. People often compliment how well my personal guitars play. These guys are the reason why. This is the only shop I refer all my students and fellow musicians too.
Kurt Johnson
The neck of my 1975 Martin D 18 broke just below the headstock. Scott did a masterful job on the repair. You can hardly see where it was broken, and I think it sounds better than before it got broken.
Matt Shaffer
I cant say enough good about this place. I took my 98 UV777P Ibanez Universe in there with terrible action, I had taken it to other techs after I couldn't get it playable one told me the neck needed to be replaced. I was referred to this place from some Des Moines musicians that spoke highly of this place. When I called them they said basically there was nothing they couldn't handle. After getting it back that 7 plays like butter and is just a treat to play. The shop is 2 hours away and I will make that trip every time a guitar needs repair, proper set-up whatever. These guy are champs!!! There is a reason big names are using this shop!
Matt Rowling
What a fantastic dude! He knows what the hell he’s doing and if you are serious about your instrument, Scott is who you need to talk to. He’s the master. I will go back for every issue I have with my guitars.
Michael Pruter Jr
The day of a gig, the nut broke on my bass. Scott worked it in and had it done in an hour. Great service as always!
