5/30/22-Not really the place to go for looking for something specific unless it is out of print or unusual. This place is filled with lots of random geeky items. The main part of the store is broken into 2 sections, books and music. From there you can also find games and other products.

As a long time table top gamer, this has always been THE destination for books and games. My daughter has started rolling dice on her own, and the employees were excited to share their wisdom and encourage! Lots of new and used stuff, plus a huge selection of vinyl if listening is your thing!

I definitely knocked over a pile of books today when I visited the store, (don't worry, I picked up my mess) but I also found a large stack of books to purchase. So many games and books. Something for everyone. Not handicap accessible (as far as books and boxes along the floors).

It seems to me the kind of place where are you come looking to see what you can find rather than looking for something specific, at least where the books are concerned. But I’m sure there’s some thing for anyone. Games, records, books, movies, etc. Mostly new games and some used ones! One of these days I’m gonna learn D&D…

Excellent book store in Arvada Colorado.great selection of laserdiscs vinyl records board games video games xbox360, playstation 2 magic and Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon decks starter and for the pro's the elder owner most recently passed the store is a lil messy but understandable. they will rise again . Black and Read is an amazing treasure hunt for anyone that loves discovering new board games. My husband and I go there most weekends, yet, somehow, the shelves always seemed stocked with new games. The staff is super helpful and friendly. They even play great music! Can’t recommend highly enough!

I'm only going to talk about the book and game half of the store since that's where I spend my time (the music half is good too though). The store is 10/10 for book lovers and game lovers alike, the owners are super friendly and helpful. But special shout out to Ben as he is crazy knowledgeable and you can tell he has a real passion for the games they sell.

Big store with tons of books and records! Vintage posters, various t-shirts, everything DnD, and movie figurines as well! One of those stores where they've packed as much as possible in there, it's great. We found Lord of the Rings books with older art covers that we were very happy with. Thank you!

This place is awesome! The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. The selection is huge and varied. This is definitely a place to stop for any board gamers, roll players, or music enthusiasts! My vist was cut a little short so I could make other plans, but if I'm in the Denver area again I'll make it a point to stop here.

Black and Read is awesome, but don't come in expecting a curated, tidy selection. better to show up with a loose idea of what you're looking for and some extra time to kill. it's easy to lose hours digging through the stacks of music and books cluttering up the shop, and I've found so many gems here. there aren't many shops like this left and I'm grateful Denver still has one.

I love everything about Black and Read; the crowded aisles full of books yet to be shelved, the disheveled shelves, the random piles of games, hidden jewels of abandoned classics probably from a deceased elderly relative's estate... Great place to hang out and browse for an hour. They are also generous with their trade credits and the staff knows the inventory pretty well.

The best place to shop for board games, music, video games or basically any other hobby or game related objects. The place is so stock full of random trinkets and books and random fantasy/dnd/mtg and other card game accessories that you can quite literally get lost in the store for hours. Tons of stuff, books, vinyls, cds, board games and general collectible gems. It is hard to move around as the store is literally floor to ceiling stuffed with stuff. If it was a little clearer and easier to look through stuff I would enjoy my visits a bit more.

My first experience with this great group of people was on a Record Store Day. They were very organized and seemed excited to help me with my selections. Since that day I have gone back several times to find albums that I truly loved from the past. If they don't have it they will let you know when your requests come into the store. It's a fun place to browse through all of the old and new albums and cd's. I look forward to visiting this great place in the future.

I could spend hours in this place! Partly because it's a fascinating treasure-trove of books, music and games, but also cause it's a little bit disorganized, but that's the charm of it too. You don't find bookstores like this everywhere

Yes, you can spend hours browsing here. Selection of board games is great, both new and used. To say it is a bit disorganized is an understatement, but that is part of the charm. Shelfs literally bursting with stuff. Nice selection of current music, but sells rather quickly, so grab it if you see it. Large inventory of used paperbacks, but have seen folks with their phones trying to look up prices to see if something is rare or under-priced. Hey, get over yourself, it isn't rare - and quick blocking the aisles. Real customer here wanting to browse and buy.

This board game/record/used book store is completely awesome. Their role playing section is amazing. I saw out of print role playing books I haven't seen since I was 15. If it's game related they probably have it. The staff was super nice and helpful.

I absolutely love this place. Stopped while visiting family in the Denver area and was pleasantly surprised by the large inventory of books and vinyl records. The wife loves old books and I love old records. Needless to say, we spent a couple of hours browsing and came out with a stack of treasures. Next time I’m in the area, I’ll make time to stop in again.

Pretty much anything you might want. Music from an amazing variety of genres. In album, cassette, or cd formats. Movies. Tons of books. And more board games than I've even seen or knew existed in my entire life. Seriously. I couldn't have imagined even half of the volume of board games. The only thing some people might not like is the clutter of it all. Kinda disorganized, but for those of us who like the adventure of finding something you didn't know you wanted, this is a great place! Black & Read is always the first place we go when we want to pick up one of the latest games or comb through the slightly used games to get a good deal on a popular game. My husband really likes this place. It’s perfect for buying board games both used and new. Also good assortment of books, though they mix used and new on the shelves which gets confusing. I like buying only used books, so it was frustrating to find books that were priced as new. Will definitely return.

Wow! What an incredible selection and variety of music, books and games. It is its own adventure searching through the store to see the different choices that are available. You can spend a lot of time finding new forms of entertainment and old memories from previous experiences in your past and the artifacts that exists in the store. Definitely worth your time to take a visit and see what treasures you can find.

A cheerfully chaotic collection of RPG books, dice, board games, records, old books and general oddities! Their RPG books and board games are all almost 20% off and so both the price alone is worth the trip! Their selection is also quite impressive. Be forewarned that it's a bit hard to squeeze through but, if you can see past the clutter, you'll find some great deals!

If you have never been to Black&Read, stop what you are doing and venture without haste to this incredibly quirky and fiercely independent establishment. There are two-sided to this shop. One side is all books and games while the other side is music. All manner of games - board, rpg, card based games. Books. Lots of books. Many used. Some new. Any and all genres one could think of or want are well represented here. Bibliophile be warned - your loved ones may never hear from you again once you have entered this small altar to the written word. 😉 If you are a music lover with a turntable or tape player definitely check the music side of Black & Read. Very large selection of records both new and used spanning the breadth of recorded music. LPs of every genre. 45s both ancient and new. 10" lacquer 78s can on occasion be found too. Nice selection of tapes for those still in possession of a deck. This is not a collection to be easily gone through in one visit and the stock is constantly changing. If you are a musicphile be prepared to loose track of time on your first vist. Place in many ways feels like it was a model for one of the Wizarding shops on Diagon Alley. Go. Support this business. I have been coming here since the early 90s and it is one of those few old skool spots that has by and large remained unchanged. I love this place, my kids love this place. You should love this place, too.

My kind of place. When I walked in, a woman was carrying a stack of Conan the Barbarian novels half her height up to the counter, and the man at the register (either a very long time employee or perhaps one of the owners) proceeded to talk Conan with her for about 5 minutes. Right after that, a family with their kids had the father carrying and equally ludicrous sized stack of board games to add to their collection. The man behind the counter was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable of all genres and games. A real delight to talk to. Albums, comics, tons of books and board games, and plenty of accessories for all of the above. Deviously easy to spend several hours here and several hundred dollars. For my first visit my partner and I got three board games, two of which were on sale, (one was opened but totally unplayed, everything still in original plastic wrapping and bags, $20 (30%!) off!), the third was an obscure indie game that has been great! Definitely going to be my go to spot for D&D, board games, and much more from now on.

My new store for everything fun! I originally need a specific card sleeve for a friend and found they have them. I asked how many they had in stock they were out. They quickly reordered some and made sure I got some. When I went to pick them up, I wanted to try a new game for camping and they walked me around showing me suggestions. They were very patient with me. I now use them for my marvel champions preorders and will spend even more time finding more great games from their huge selections. Glad I found Black and Read!

Great selection of Games,Comics, and Novels, along with all sorts of gaming accoutrements. There is a vast music side as well that I haven't given nearly enough attention due to the overwhelming amount of nerd content.

This place can be a little intimidating at first but once you start looking around it have a lot of hidden gems. Tons of books, games, music and so much more. The shelves are packed with some much that it is easy to get lost in it all. We only scratched the surface of what this store has to offer. We will be back to find a new treasure.

It's hard to say whether this is a five-star place or not, but really for board game selection it's one of the only good games in town. There are so many discounted and used games you can really pick up a collection on the cheap. New games are also cheaper than your standard full MSRP brick and mortar store and they do have one of the better selections in town. There are some downsides however. The store is pretty packed full and can be hard to navigate if you don't know where to look. The staff is also a bit hard to find and there's really only one board game expert that I've seen.

This store is a true hidden gem. They have almost every modern board game in stock at a 20% discount, a massive used tabletop rpg book collection, and so much more for gaming hobbyists. I didn't even get to see everything in my 60 minute stay there, Mainly due to the shelves being completed filled with a huge variety of games. Truly a feast for the gaming enthusiast. Their book and Blu-ray/DVD collection is also very extensive.

A really neat store for gaming, books and music. I mostly swing by for the gaming stuff which is a mountain of stuff but like with a lot of used (with new stuff too) places there are some gaps. For the most part the prices are reasonable though for regular used stuff they are slightly on the higher end of the spectrum but I'll also say no shipping or eBay drama either. If you want the rare or collectible stuff you will pay a premium price so do not expect to find any hidden gems. The staff who wrangles games knows their stuff. The books side of the store has a lot of shelf space and a variety of books across many genres and non-fiction. Like any used book store there will be a lot of variance but that is party of the charm. Standard used book sort of pricing. The music side is probably the least impressive but they have a lot of used stuff in CD and records which is cool. For the most part I found prices to be good. The staff is mostly hands off, which is fine by me. They have been very helpful when I asked for some information or to break out the boxes of dice. Overall if you are in the area (I am not, sadly or I'd be there every week) then this is a great place to check out.

An amazing store! Huge selections of board games, ttrpgs, records, and books. It can be a little cluttered at times but that’s due to the sheer amount of product they have! Only real downside, they don’t have a public restroom, so you have to use the one at the neighbouring Target.

What an awesome place to bring back amazing memories from the past. My love in life has always been listening to music. As a kid I would buy a new album or cassette tape every payday. This place has so much cool stuff you can literally spend hours and hours here. Mikey is totally cool and has the same love for music as I do. I would definitely recommend checking this place out. I love going and spending time here! Local business, and intense nerd store. Precisely the kind of place to go to find obscure albums, tapes and cds, posters and books. My personal favourite is the table top and board games section of the store, I could spend hours reading box art and finding cool games to take to game night. I've bought a good part of my library at Black and Read and I recommend it to anyone! Family and friends alike.

This store is reminiscent of an old record shop with a used book store attached. They have records from every genre, but they are often what is left over after the collectors grabbed all the good stuff. They have a great selection of board games and role-playing games and books. Not much in the way of miniatures or things like that. They have card games and dice, with a small section of star wars figures near the back. They are a fun place to walk around and find something you might not need, but like.

All I can speak to is the book side, where the selection is exceptional and the prices are great. The classic fiction section is really well stocked and pretty much always you can find the exact book you came looking for (I don't know what this pattern even means and if it says something about this store or about the readers of Arvada, but for some reason the Faulkner shelf is always completely full... go figure).

I left a 5 star review for Black and Read about 9 months ago, like a few of my other reviews, when I logged in today gone!!! I have no idea why. It's okay, I will do a new review. I just love Black and Read Music, Books & Games. discovered this gem back in college in '94 and I am so happy they are still in business. I haven't been in quite sometime, but hope to make it in whenever this crazy pandemic ends soneday, hopefully soon. The thing I love most about this place is they carry vinyl and lots of it, cds, books, board games, band tee shirts, all sorts of collectibles, rock and movie posters, I even bought a fabulous vintage purse here once from the 40's. You never know what you are going to find here and that is what makes it so much fun. The super cool and more valuable stuff is kept under lock and key up front, so don't forget to look in the cases. Some things are in boxes so check there too. And plan to stay a couple of hours at least. This type of store does not exist in very many places anymore, it's like a journey back to a better place and time. Most of the things they sell are one of a kind second hand items, but that's part of the fun in shopping here, you get something cool that not everyone else has.

If you are a nerd and love garage sales, this place is for you. If you are a music lover and vinyl-buff, this place is for you. If you are into organization and want to get in and out quickly, you might want to try some place else. Love this place. Lots and tons of both new and used books, records and games all at reasonable prices. Staff is knowledgeable on everything except where a specific thing might be. This might be frustrating to some but if you are like me and enjoy the hunt it can be fun digging through boxes of items to find what you're looking for. Don't be intimidated by how metal the dudes running the record side look, they're totally cool with you buying that Phil Collins record and might even recommend something similar as well.

A huge selection of music books and games. Their metaphysical section is enormous compared to other bookstores and metaphysical shops. A friendly gentleman working there was extremely knowledgeable and discussed different tarot decks with me and their history. A great place for used books! Books are organized well, though the store may not feel like it since nearly every inch of available space is filled with books and other forms of media. This is a really good place to pick up tabletop gaming books, as well as fill any holes in your book collection. In general, the books are relatively clean and free of damage. Prices are usually marked with a sticker, but expect about 30% of what you pick up to be unmarked. You can always ask about unmarked books. The prices vary widely, and there's no rule of thumb about how much something costs. They're unlikely to have exactly the book you're looking for, but they usually have something just as good!

My favorite new & used hobby game & misc old media store. I've been shopping here since the early 1990s - used to buy mtg cards here; found some old out of print books; they sell all kinds of old media, now they are my favorite place for strategy games like Pandemic. The woman who buys their used games is very knowledgeable and thorough - she really makes sure the used games are complete. They have a pretty good selection of card sleeves too - they even carry mini euro & large Dixit sized sleeves. It's an odd almost eccentric place with lots of different types of items but I've never had a bad experience at Black and Read - absolutely recommend it.

Super great place if you're looking for Music, Movies, Books. It might feel cluttered at times but the more you go the more you get used to it ,and the more you start to enjoy it. The Music side is cleaner and well run, with lots of different types of music for everyone. The employees might look a little hard to approach at first but once you start talking to them MOST of them are really cool dudes. Shout out to the older Slayer fan who works there. Super cool guy. The Book Side feels a lot more like you're a book hunter searching through the shelves and it's honestly some of the most fun I've had in a book store.

Black and Read is a very large store with a huge selection of books, games, and more. My husband and I are mostly interested in the vinyl though, which doesn't seem to be as well-stocked as the other items. The last time we were there, the vinyl selection seemed to be very minimal. The employees in the music section could learn a thing or two about customer service, as well. Hopefully they improve these issues, as we would love to return and support a local vinyl shop.

Still one of the better (and relatively few remaining) secondhand media stores in the Denver area. I have been coming here for most of their 25+ year history. Clerks and customers have come and gone, but the experience is always a little different and usually worthwhile if you're willing to step over stacks and enjoy spending time browsing for your particular media. The store is split into two sections, the 'black' side for music and memorabilia, and the 'read' half for games, movies and books. First, the 'black' half. They have a collection of moderate- to lesser-known music on hand, almost all Western genres. Their specialized hip hop and metal collections have wanted recently but sometimes you get lucky with a recent customer's trade-ins. Their vinyl selection, especially new, has grown stagnant over recent years, outside of Record Store Day orders. The bins usually have some hidden gems of used vinyl/CDs/and tapes to comb over. Don't bother with hot new releases, not that kind of store. The 'read' side is a bibliophile's dream, and has the cheapest game prices and best selection this side of the Amazon. I always go here first for selecting or trying out new tabletop games. Lots of used D&D and other vintage RPG modules, too. The DVD selection is hit and miss, as are used video games.(most titles are 5-10+ years old, don't count on anything more recent to be in stock). Gamer Staples like dice and card sleeves are on hand, and they have the most affordable packs of Magic cards in Colorado. Overall, a relic of a store with reliable staff and 'luck of the draw' selection. If you're passing through northern Denver or need a media fix, they'll have something for you.

Unreal stock of rare and hard to find role playing books, more board games than you have ever heard of (personal guarantee as a huge board game fan). Also a massive music section I am told is world class. Definitely ask the staff for help and recommendations, it can be a bit claustrophobic if they recently received a good haul.

This is our favorite book and board game store, by far they have the best selection, all sorts of nooks and crannies that some are hidden in, and reasonable prices for new (20% off, which usually beats Amazon). We always look for cooking or cocktail books but their selection isn't the greatest. Black & Read has many more records than anything else ( and a very loud speaker in the board have section) Do yourself a favor, know which one to buy before going because it's tough to get suggestions in that corner of the store. Great place for vinyl, ok place for books, fantastic place for tabletop or RPG gaming. It's really far out, and as a visitor it was not worth the trip from Denver to see a bunch of used NYT bestsellers on the shelves. The vinyl though, is impressive, and it might be worth the trip to find that oddity to round out your collection. Good selection of music ephemera as well. What impressed me is how the staff seemed to know every customer and really engaged with them, suggesting all kinds of new music.

By this I mean the store has a lot and is organized but the amount of each item to look over to get what you want takes time. Prices are very fair and they do buy what they are in need of. I just read that the owner has recently passed away. God, I hope Black & Read stays in business. I never new the man, but his manager and I, I assume that would be Mr. Baca, have shared a long affinity for Frank Zappa. Most of my LP and CD purchases over the last 20 years have been made there, not to mention books, gaming supplies stickers and posters. I bought a GIANT sized poster of Rush shortly after Neil's death...Killer find...Great price. I've been trying to talk him into dismantling the front shelves for years so I can purchase the Missing Persons poster in the window. This is one of my most favorite places on earth. When I go, I spend two hours, minimum. My kids have been buying me gift certificates for Fathers Day since they were born. Let me know when that poster has been liberated, Mr. Baca, and I'll come and spend a couple more hours at this outstanding establishment.

My only complaint - and it's kind of a big one - is that their website doesn't list their hours for buying product, but it's implied that they're always buying. They aren't, as it turns out. We drove all the way from Colorado Springs only to find out that their game buyer(s) weren't on the clock today. Further, nobody I talked to could provide standardized hours for buying. I guess we'll just have to call in advance of all future trips to see if buyers are on the clock.

There is almost zero organization and that's what makes it so much fun. You can spend hours digging through the stacks and you'll always find a gem. If you do decide to buy a used game ensure you open it to see if all of the pieces are there.

Black & Read is my favorite store, possibly of all time. One explanation for this is certainly that it feeds multiple addictions: board games, books, and music. It would be obvious to expound on the low-hanging fruit: TONS of board games, some I know well and others I've never even heard of; a wonderful selection of books that will fill just about any niche; and rack after rack of vinyl and CDs. I'm sure others have covered that thoroughly. But the ethereal quality that makes B&R exemplary is the incredibly hard-to-find yet unmistakable feeling of walking into the basement room of my dreams. It's a feeling of instant, effortless comfort, as though I lived there and was familiar with every nook and cranny. Not only do the rows of shelves have every book and game and record I could shake a whim at, but the stark contrast to shiny, plastic, soulless corporate stores I find literally rejuvenating. Thank you, Black & Red, both for what you do and just for existing.

Prepare to spend hours in this place with so much to look at! The only local store I've been to that has Leuchtturm1917 Master notebooks and at a reasonable price. Take in some used books or movies to get a generous amount of in-store credit.

As a nerd, this place is awesome. Shelves and shelves of used fiction, especially sci-fi and fantasy. Two giant shelves of used RPG books, including a bunch of out of print stuff (I even found a circa 1977 Traveller set once!). Two more shelves of new RPG books, including D&D, Pathfinder, Star Wars, Legend of the Five Rings, GURPS, and more. Past the RPG section are the board games, seven or eight shelves full you're guaranteed to find something new and interesting. There's also another section with Minis (including a ton of X-wing, Armada, and Legion), and a couple shows of used games that you can usually find a Hidden Gem in. Not a gaming nerd? The West half of the building is dedicated to music. There's a whole section of used movies, including a ton of VHS tapes that you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere but eBay at this point. I don't live anywhere close, but everytime I'm in the neighborhood I have to come in and always walk out with an arm load

This is the best board game/roleplaying game/comic book shop in the Greater Denver area, in my opinion. The selection is fantastic, and the staff have been able to help me order or find rare and out-of-print games. If you're looking for older TTRPG supplements, there's a good chance that they carry it! The same is true of rarer, out-of-print fantasy and sci-fi books; I was able to pick up several first edition copies of books by my favorite authors here! If there's a geek in your family who's into board games, table top gaming, comics, or really any physical media-based geekery, this is an excellent place to shop for gifts!

This is what a game shop/book store should be. I am at a loss for words to describe just how incredible Black and Read is, and those who know me would raise an eyebrow at that. If you like the organization and wide, easily navigable aisles at Barnes n' Noble because it makes it easy to get in and out, this may not be for you - but then again, with staff so helpful, and in-and-out run can be easily accomplished. Black and Read hearkens back to the days of shelves upon shelves of books, with stacks of books in between, with all the tabletop gaming resources anyone could need, along with audio and video selections. There's buried treasure here. 5-star. Spent $200 yesterday. I'll be going back today.

I have mixed feelings about Black and Read, mostly positive. On the one hand, they have an incredible selection and excellent prices. They sell a mix of new and used merchandise. I go most often to visit their large wall of board games, but they have a broad selection of used books, tabletop roleplaying games, videos and audio media as well that outshines anyone in the metro area. My only reservation about the place -- and it's a big one -- is that it is that their inventory does not begin to fit in the space and it has become a maze of encumbered aisleways and jumbled shelves -- a condition the staff does not seem motivated to remedy. Thus, I need to be in the right mindset to visit. If you have plenty of time to browse and soak in the musty smell of old books while metal music from the far side of the store competes with the lilting Celtic harp CD on your side as you rifle through boxes for books, this is the place for you.

Great people. Great selection. I really like going to a shop owned by guys I've bought from since I was in 9th grade (remember Sweets Records and Tapes?) and I am now 49. But... I would really give 4.5 stars if Google allowed it. The death metal played on the music side of the store can be overwhelming. When I have to listen to metal for my 2 hours (or as long as I can take it), my time in the store begins to feel a bit like a death march to go with the death metal. I can handle, even enjoy, a single CD of the some of the staff's selections of the metal I do not know, and too the staff's credit, if I say something, the music changes. I just wish I didn't have to say something. However, when I'm in the store and music other than metal is being played, I really enjoy myself browsing through vinyl for 2+ hours as I did in my youth. But don't get put off the ramblings of an old man. Black & Read is a great store with a lot to offer, from 45s, cassettes, CDs and LPs across a wide spectrum of styles. In fact, I would say this store has the best selection vinyl jazz in town. Get in there and enjoy yourself!

I tried going here easter sunday in hopes there was an awesome media store such as this but it was closed. I never leave my house other than work and groceries so actually going somewhere is rare. I mostly order records online as the last time I visited a record store they threw Metal in with rock which is taboo in my world. And it was also in Denver. And the selection was TERRIBLE, f'n Hipsters!!! So my date and I decided to meet up here to break the ice, not only was I happy upon entering the store, but the employees were extremely friendly and respectful! Unlike the shop in Denver. On top of this awesomeness, they actually put Metal in it's own section! I was so happy with the Metal lp selection I now want to only shop here for my rare shopping excursions. The fact the guy that rung me up had a bullet belt made me feel like home in Los Angeles. I personally am a minimalist and save more than spend, but I could not be happier there is a store like this when I venture out! Black and Read can add another customer as long as I am living here! There is no other option for record stores IMHO!!!!
