ASHLEY BURT
Great service and selection. They can/will order anything you need and most of the time arrives in just a few business days. Limited parking because it's in 5 points, and not for the claustrophobic, the place is small and has records everywhere. Best place in Columbia for vinyl, hands down.
Seth Yeun
I was very happy that one of the employees was knowledgeable on music from and relating to the Goth subculture! I picked up quite a few CDs and will definitely be back for more. Employees are nice and the music that plays in store was enjoyable as well.
Chris Mixon
A beloved local institution that’s been doing it right for 40+ years. The most recent releases and, bar none, the best used selection I’ve ever seen. Staffed by legitimate music fans and musicians alike, these folks know what they’re doing. If they don’t have it and can get it for you, they will. If you see something used that goes up on their daily posts, call them, they’ll hold it for you. The alluring smell of decades old vinyl? They’ve got it 🙂Everything you could possibly want in a used record store. Truly a treasure. Highest recommendation.

Unfortunately yet another disappointing experience as they have been sucked into the "vinyl revival" along with it's silly pricing.
Quite funny as a lot of their bins still say " most records under $5".
If you can find one less than $8 you have done well!
And if you do it's a $1 record in reality.
Honest guys $8 & $10 for common garden average records is out of order.
At least it is for this fella!
New record pricing is on on par with everyone else but your used stuff( rock anyway) is too much.
Been twice, will not be a third trip.

Let's begin with the conclusion. I love this record shop.
Record stores come in different shapes and styles. Some specialize in one thing heavily, some have all of the charm you might expect from a corporate chain, while others don't appear to hold any values at all. In so many ways, there's no mistaking that Papa Jazz has been around since 1980. That it has endured since 1980 should tell you that it's an institution that has weathered the ups and downs of the favored format of the store - the vinyl record.
Papa Jazz stocks most anything. Primarily a second hand store, it has expanded to new releases/reissues to keep up with market trends, but the magic within those walls is the used selection. Within that, you'll find why the store really draws in both serious, seasoned record collectors and the more curious and adventurous among new collectors. What's that? Great records that weren't hits.
Sure - the classic titles are there and you can find them at prices fair enough that you may question why you have a Discogs account at all. But keep digging. You'll find that a knowledgeable staff has the desire to turn you on to left field and fringe artists who you may not have considered previously, or even known about. Avant Garde Jazz? Yep. Prog? You betcha. Some outlaw, border-line psycho country singer from the most rural of 1970s America? Maaaaayybe?
It's a record store that in my estimation is a dying breed. Are there cleaner record stores on Earth? Sure. Are you going to knock your head on a piece of their HVAC unit? Possibly. I have - more than once. There's a sign to warn you though, so it's on you when it happens. But if you want an accommodating space with serious knowledge behind the counter, when you're ready to get your friend that Fleetwood Mac classic they want on vinyl and THEN turn them onto the Eric Dolphy record they NEED, well, Papa Jazz is the exact place for you.
I could go on. And on. But when you're a USC student at the beginning of your life's adventure, you're in town for whatever brings you to Columbia, or you just want to see what a record shop looks like when it's run by people who care about what they're doing, Papa Jazz comes with my highest recommendation. Get your knees dirty with the crates on the floor. Ask an employee what they're digging right now. Tell your yuppie parents to go walk around Five Points while you expand your horizons. Just understand there's something for you to find, something for you to learn, when you shop at Papa Jazz Record Shoppe.
Kevin Oliver
I've been shopping at Papa Jazz for 35 years and never been disappointed in the selection and the surprising finds. Even in the vinyl revival we're in these days, it's not hard to find affordable, good stuff in the bins.
Blind Rage
Truly a wonderful place to dig for used vinyl with great prices, a welcoming friendly staff and all of the old school record shop vibes of my youth. A must stop on every trip through SC.
Kendra Miller
Houston curated a great selection of CDs for my brother who's in a nursing home. I didn't know the era and my brother was quite happy with it. Thanks Houston!
Tex Ramone
Love this place - super clean, everything is easy to find, staff is really helpful. Scored a really sweet Bauhaus album here.
E.M. ESSER
This store is the best. Never an issue and always layed back. By far it actually is the best record store in the south east hands down!!! Just came back into town and this was the first place I checked on to see what's up!!
tom parks
Taking the kids to a 'record store' was so much fun. Very nostalgic for me. There's just not enough of these places around anymore.
Jim L.
The best place to get vinyl in the Cola area. They have a wide selection to choose from. I have been going to Papa Jazz for over 20 years for my music and they haven't changed a bit. They also carry CDs if you're not into vinyl. They sell everything from pop, metal, hip-hop, and, most importantly, local artists. The people that work there are great and are always willing to help. Do like me and go to Papa Jazz and get lost looking for albums you didn't even know you needed.
Dave Pcolar
A well stocked and curated collection of vinyl and CDs. Great location. A must for any vinyl collector!
Keltsey Jacob
Intimate shop with great selection. Staff is knowledgeable, and cares about providing quality vinyl, etc. Would recommend a visit to this local favorite!
e mckelvey
The only thing I can say is that Papa Jazz is constantly the best record store that I have ever been to. The selection is always great and the used section is always fairly priced and very conservatively graded for the better. What some stores call VG+ Papa Jazz will grade it a VG or a VG- and ask a very fair price. I buy from a bunch of different places but most of my collection has come from Papa.
Rory Bowman
cutest little shop! love the vibe and had very kind employees. Very pleasant experience. They have older artists as well as new and all organized in alphabetical order. Looking forward to coming back!
Connie Dowdy Campbell
They are awesome! Very helpful in locating what I was looking for. Friendly staff & great prices.
Need4Gweed
Great place to discover new and old vinyl. Friendly and helpful staff
lennongrad13
Great store! With a wide selection of new and used records!
Carl Hilton
I grew up going to record shops like this. I like digging in racks and crates for the good stuff. I like buying local first. They can usually find about 75% of what I'm looking for.
Their trade prices are fair, their purchase prices are reasonable. Special orders usually arrive next day, and they are reasonably priced as well. The staff is knowledgeable and fun to talk to. Parking can be dicey during the weekdays, but you can usually find a spot. Never had a problem on the weekend.
J.D. Ross
Easily the best record store in the midlands. Selection isn’t the widest, but I’ve found many great albums here over the years. Always pay a visit when I’m in five points
Hilda DiBenedetto
Great selection of new and old
YBM saga
When walking in the staff was very chill and nice, me and my aunt was just browsing the store because it had so many records, cds, cassettes, and DVDs, They have a wide selection of records cds etc. This is the one record store that u actually want to go to.
G T
1st time to visit. Great selection and really helpful staff. I will be back !
Brooks Robinson
Super cool record store, perfectly located in Five Points. For any USC students into vinyl, great place to get good deals. Super close to campus too if you're on campus.
I.DIG.WAX.
A great record store. They had a. great CD selection which is mostly what I buy. Didn't really get a chance to look through the vinyl. I liked the old school vibe and music that was playing while I was there, which ranged from electronic music to The Commodores. The staff was extremely nice, personable, and interested in talking music. One of the best record stores I've been to all around.
Bob Johnson
Papa Jazz is a great place to find almost any album that you are looking for. With a huge selection of used vinyl , you can find anything from the obscure to most current artists. Definitely a great place to find music and hard to get albums and more.
Jim Little
One of America's finest LP & CD stores. New and used items, and some music DVDs. Also has 10+ bargain crates of used LPs for $1, among them are some fine ones.
Thomas Richburg
Genuinely one of my favorite places in Cola. The staff has always been willing to talk music and to give me solid recommendations. They've remembered me by name and face consistently since I started going there a year and a half ago. If they don't have an album you want, they can often order it for you, and I've had no problems doing so any of the times that I've ordered. I'd recommend Papa Jazz to anyone into records in the area. It's too good of an atmosphere and they're too good people not to be aware of.
Callie PlainJANE Ives (FLYINSOLO)
Pretty much every vinyl you could ask for here along with friendliness and courtesy. Great place to buy or sell different types of music merchandise.
Patrick Means
Pretty neat shop and had lots of records. Personally I didn’t find many electronic vinyls which was pretty disappointing. However my roommate found some songs he liked which means they got some good stuff. I’d happy to be proven wrong or see them increase their electronic stocks. Some of the artist I went looking for and couldn’t find where Clams Casino, Flume, Lorn, and Petit biscuit.
Lucas Green
Pretty cool place, although it kinda creeper me out. The music they on the speakers was way too loud and sounded like some weird chanting. Unnerving but nice selection, though it could be sorted to more easily find what you need.
Chelsea Hughes
I love coming here and searching through the collection of vinyls. I always find such awesome stuff. I've thoroughly enjoyed finding old records that I used to listen to with my grandparents as a child. I highly recommend this place. They'll even order stuff for you if they don't have it in store. They ordered an album for me and had it there 2 days later!
Dan Houston
Columbia institution. The best record store in the state.
Bill Louks
Wonderful staff, great selection of new and old. These people really know their stuff, and the pricing is fair. I was just calling out albums off my want list, and knew what they had memorized. I was amazed. I highly recommend this shop.
Sharon Tramell
Great little shop! They care about their safety and customer safety. Offered a mask if I didn't have one and hand sanitizer our hands when we came in at out appointment time. Employees were super helpful and wore masks too. I will definitely come back.and support this business.
Krissy
Papa Jazz is an awesome shop for music and movies! They even have vinyl records too! You can also shop for CD's and DVD's as well! If you are looking for a particular item and it's not available in-store they will order it for you right then and there which is very convenient! I love the employees hospitality and kindness as well! I definitely recommend Papa Jazz for all of your entertainment needs!😁
Jillian Holmes
The selection at Papa Jazz is absolutely unbeatable compared to most other stores in the area selling records. There’s boxes and crates of records everywhere you look, and they have so many different eras and genres of music it’s impossible to leave empty-handed. The store setup can get a little tight when there’s high traffic but it’s a small store so you gotta work with what you got. The staff is always extremely friendly and enthusiastic about all the music! I’ll come browse records here just to get away from my problems lol.
John Bliss
This is hard to gauge for me because I'm not the average music buyer. They didn't have very much that I really wanted. New releases that they had, I can get anywhere. The one highlight was RSD leftovers. They surprisingly had a bunch. I already got the titles I wanted most online though, but if you're looking go hit them up before resorting to flippers. They do buy used records which is cool. Most prices were competitive but the Wilco box was 10 bucks over average price (Amazon is 89 as is others with discounts). I did not look at the Jazz section as I only like a few things and I have what I want mostly. Bottom line is if you like newer artists and buy CDs or vinyl , you'll like it for sure. Rock n Roll collectors, I would temper my expectations. The rating is for overall including for the average consumer. Hand sanitizer!!
Caitlin Buckhaults
Great local record shop that has been in business for a long, long time. You can get brand new records or used ones, including some finds in the $5 or less boxes if you are really hunting hard. I've had a couple of bad experiences with the owner, but the staff has always been A+++. They always have a great music selection, are quick to find out if they can get ahold of something rare or out of stock, know a bit about record labels and the music industry in general and are always helpful. The prices are the best that you can find in town - definitely worth a stop if you are a vinyl lover.
Jonathan Dusenbury
I've been shopping here for 32 years. The staff has always been friendly, knowledgeable, and outgoing to make sure you found what you came for. If they don't have it, they can generally order it and have it in stock within a couple of days. They are one of the very few shops that accurately grade their used vinyl, and are very fair in their trade buying and selling.
Jonathon Alvey
Great selection of new and used records! Could use a good going through, because you really have to dig to find some gems. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful so that makes the searce a little easier. Please support this local mainstay in Columbia
Mark Arnold
I have been a loyal patron at this Shoppe for years. The service, selection and atmosphere are from a by-gone era. They treat you like family and get to know your tastes in music, film and always come through with special orders or requests.
One of the finest stores in Columbia with a knowledgeable, friendly staff.
I wouldn't shop for media anywhere else.
Addie Baker
This was a great record store. Very small but a lot of good records. Used originals and new represses. Was my first time there and I will be back.
Eidan
Very quaint little shop, I'd highly recommend it. Good selection from vintage to new releases. There were things released as new as a few weeks ago in the new arrivals section. Very friendly staff. Pricing is about average for records, but the vintage records are cheap and I saw plenty of new ones under $20.
Carlee Sizemore
I was looking for a very specific album/cover art for my husband’s birthday. Not only did Alex not laugh at my absurd specificity, he checked in with me the next day to let me know that they found a new copy and then the day after that to let me know that a vintage copy just walked through the door. I’m super impressed with the level of service I received as a first time customer and am happy to continue to support a gem of a small business.
Brandon Worthy
The best record shop in Columbia. Hands down. Reminds me of small shops I found through Philadelphia, very kind staff, they’ll help you out with anything you need and I’ve had friends tell me they’ll even order something for you if they can. Very big selection despite it being a very small shop. I love everything about this place
Cord Nipper
Best selection of used vinyl I've seen in years.
Store is a bit cramped but that's part of the attraction. Reminds me of the used record stores of my youth.
Staff is very helpful and went out of their way to make sure I was taken care of.
Victor Loar
This place is awesome and the people that run it are awesome as well. I needed to find a hard to find CD and the great folks there were not only able to find it for me but got it for me in one day for a great price. I went to Columbia to the location and it was a gold mine of vinyl and CDs and tapes a real music store from yesteryear. The fine people at this record store will find you anything you need well worth the trip.
Michael Evans
Great store with huge selection of used vinyl. CD collection isn't near the size or quality as their vinyls but is still nice. Staff has always been friendly when I stop by. The store its self ins't large but they pack a bunch of stuff in there. Whatever they don't have they can order new. Have any questions, email or call them! Thumbs up.
Emil Dee
Man! One of the BEST record stores i’ve been to. Ever! The owner is super friendly and he and his staff have everything very organized. Reminds me of my childhood record chain in Cleveland, OH “The Record Exchange”.
Everything is reasonably priced and categorized to make asking questions and also browsing a EASE!
Jim Buggz
the best for music, loads of vinyl and cd, current releases and loads of tunes from multiple previous decades. Awesome prices with lots of used stuff at killer discounts. Deep jazz holdings but also loads of rock, maybe even some country. Great place to browse and people watch while the knowledgeable staff play music that rouses your curiosity.
Shannon Michael Franks
Good selection. But too crowded and has low ceilings. I looked only in New used area. I was uncomfortable because of covid anxiety. Will revisit when fully vaccinated.
Taylor Pressley
Top notch local hidden gem in five points. They always have the records I want and are happy to make suggestions for music you might like based on your favorites. The staff is always friendly and the pricing is fair. I love this shop
Nikolai Puc
Cool looking record store. Inside they have a reasonable selection of used records (wish they had it organized better in to more genres) Wasn’t a fan of all of the re-issues in there. Friendly staff and overall a good experience.
Albert Harrison
So I had a specific Christmas gift in mind for someone, and Amazon messed up my order. I turn to all the big stores, hoping they'd have it? No dice. I turn to this place? Gets my order in the very next day, Christmas saved. Good-looking selection of cds when I looked around - once the holidays are done and I've gotten through whatever cds I get from family, I intend to come back again sometime.
Sean McDaniel
Of all record shops I've been to, Papa Jazz is by far the best. They have just about anything you could possibly want on Vinyl, CD, or DVD. The service is fantastic and the people that work there are very nice. The prices are the best I've seen in any record shop I've been to. I have never left Papa Jazz feeling disappointed. I definitely recommend Papa Jazz for any Vinyl, CD, or DVD collectors that live in or visit Columbia.
Sharon Brooks
Such a fantastic place.
Friendly owner and store staff , great new and used selection at fair prices. Tons of great jazz and rock LPs.I have sold/traded LPs multiple times and value is always fair or above my expectations I always find something or have something recommended by Tim , Alex , or Woody whenever i visit. If you don's see what you are looking for they will get it for you in a couple days with no shipping added. I have purchased so many great used jazz and rock LPs here , my collection would not be the same without these guys!
Salam Y'all
The shop is small and can get a bit crowded, but it is very well-organized and the staff is knowledgable and friendly. The prices are good and the selection is awesome - I picked up 10 used David Bowie CDs for $75, and they were all the ones I wanted, plus one that I had never found even new. Highly recommended! I will be back!
Nash Burnette
This a great used music store.
I am an avid CD collector and last week,
when my wife & I were in Columbia, SC on vacation,
we found this store and went to it ..... almost everyday!!!
We got around 30 used CDs there, and for very little money.
An excellent store for lovers of music.
Amy B
Carefully curated cool little cave with warrens of new and old music in disc and vinyl form. Everything is well labeled and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. Every now and again I used to drive all the way from Clemson with my dad, a jazz playing bassist, just to check out the new stuff on offer. Now I come for me.
Andrew
Has great service as soon as I walked in
Robin Ross
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They didn't have one of the CDs I was looking for but was able to order it for me.
Pub Sub
Papa Jazz is a refuge of cool in Five Points. Incredible selection of used and new LPs, CDs, and DVDs. Genres most often found in their bins are Jazz and Rock, but you can find some decent Hip Hop, Punk, Funk, Folk, Indie, etc. Prices are a hair on the high side compared to my experience with past record shopes, but I don't mind paying a slight premium to keep a great business in the green. Used media is all graded prior to selling which is a great help to the buyer. Music on the stereo while shopping is always in excellent taste. Open hours are long and accomidate any schedule. Keep up the good work Papa Jazz!
Robyn Smith
I can always get what I want from Papa Jazz!
Haiqing
Their prices are the lowest but LPs are clean. I purchased many LPs in mint condition for under $1 each. Location is very convenient.
Update: my casual nighttime photos got so many views!
Richard Stansill
What a great place to find your favorite music in various formats. I can't tell you enough what a fantastic place this is and what a great vibe you get when you go in. The staff are knowledgeable and very friendly. I highly recommend giving it a visit. You will most likely return.
Joe Burkholder
Really great browsing record shop. Found some great albums and 45s. Staff is knowledgeable and the prices are very reasonable.
Fearnoarts
Excellent store! Friendly, helpful staff. Great prices. The only bad thing about this place is that it's not big enough. There is a lot of jam packed goodness here. I love this place. I've always come out of there with treasures. Will go back again and again.
Bryan Caulder (HelicopterCrash)
Best selection of vinyl in town! Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. I'd easily spend all my money here if I could.

I have been wandering the aisles of Papa Jazz since I was a teenager. The only stop you should need in Columbia for new and used music. The staff is beyond knowledgeable and the conversation is generally excellent.
Spike Porter
Was in town for a wedding but we made a stop to this awesome Record Store. My friends and I walked out with so many good records at a very good price. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves music.
L.D. Pruitt
Pappa Jazz a place that's been around a long time. I use to live in the neighborhood years ago and go in all the time to buy use or new cd's weekly or biweekly. I went today after about 15 years seems as though nothing has changed. Still hands down the best place to buy new or used cd's etc...
Levonne Macomsom
Awesome place! They have a great selection of old records. They also have cassettes, DVD'S, and CD's. Prices are very fair, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Not really my kind place. Has the feeling like it’s about to collapse. Scares me slightly. But I did enjoy perusing their selections of movies. Probably won’t be back but I did enjoy the brief little adventure.
Tyrone Rice (Ty)
Really cool place.I can get my hard to find music here on vinyl!
christopher alverson
Great sele tion and service. They also buy back/trade in your old records. I prefer the trade in, it is usually double, or more than what they give for buying them. Then I just use the credits to get more records! It's a wonderful, cozy , little shop in 5 points!
al w
