Reviews of Dorsey Music, Boise
I can't say enough about this store and the customer service I received there. I went online and saw that a discontinued amp I really wanted was available from Dorsey Music. I contacted them and arranged to have it shipped to me.
Every single aspect of the transaction was outstanding. When I had questions, Bryan, who I worked with, responded immediately. When Bryan said he would contact me within a certain time, he did, every single time. When he said the amp would "ship tomorrow", that was when it was shipped. When I received the item, it was perfectly packaged and it was even better than he had described. The price of the item was very competitive and shipping costs were no more than I expected.
It was clear Bryan and Dorsey Music were dedicated to outstanding customer service. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this store to anyone...a top notch musical partner!
Very well stocked store for just about any muscian. I bought a Fender Bass Guitar for my mucically talented son. The staff were incredibly kind, and professional. They were musicians, too. So helping my son pick out the guitar that bests suites him was pleasure to witness.
If you shop there, you won't be disappointed.
Nicest music store I've ever been visited. The gentleman working there was very friendly and helpful. Amazing selection of instruments and equipment!! See for yourself...
Super friendly and helpful staff. Great selection of musical instruments. Prices comparable to major retailers but with in person service and knowledge
Best music teachers and great selection of instruments and sheet music. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff
Had a great experience here today. My Mom and I stopped in to buy my grandson some slide lubricant for the trombone that he plays in the school band. A young man named Brandon grabbed exactly what we needed, and then patiently and enthusiastically answered a bunch of questions we had about the playability of some different instruments, including a demonstration. This is the kind of customer service I rarely encounter anymore, and is the reason this store just gained a new regular customer.
Needed to rent a cello for just a week so my daughter could play for my father. They made it happen in the most convenient way possible after giving us several options. I will forever be a customer and take all of my musical needs to them. They know what they are doing and do it very very well!
Great place for everything instrumental! Parents don't forget to shop here for things ahead of presents... support local, not chinese plastic!
What an amazing music shop. The inventory is vast, well organized, accommodating to all levels of musical skills, and well attended to by knowledgeable and enthusiastic shopkeepers.
As a comparison in customer service to another popular music store in Boise, here is my anecdote and 5 star rationale. I took my instrument to the other store for a strange noise/vibration/rattle it was making. When the wait time was going to be too long, i called Dorsey and they said bring it in and they'll take a look right away. I did so and they took the instrument out and noodled around and diagnosed it, and gave me it back reassuring me I could do it in my own. So, the important difference to me is, i understand being busy and back logged on repair orders, but Dorsey SAVED me TIME and MONEY simply by taking 3 minutes to hear me (and the instrument...ha! Rim shot?), which is something I believe could have been done at the first store given what appeared to me to be a quiet Wednesday evening when I tried to drop it off. It made me want to spend my money at Dorsey on SOMETHING, anything, just to loyally repay them for their service.
I've been a customer for the past 12 years. I have 5 kids+ husband that are all musicians as well, ranging from classical to rock. The staff is helpful and down to earth w/ great selection! I went in recently to upgrade my guitar and Brandon helped me out! No pressure or judgement, just great insight!!
Called asking if they had a part for a clarinet. It was the ligature (the clamp that holds the reed to the mouthpiece) I was after; and they don't need replaced often, so my hopes were not high they would have it. They did! Price was very fair! When I arrived with my kids we were greeted promptly! I had a prior negative experience at this location, and was concerned for more of the same. NOT SO! The employees were courteous and polite and were eager to help, but gave us space when we wanted to browse. Very pleased! I will be back- I'm thinking of getting a new bass guitar!
Staff is excellent! We were shopping for my daughters violin and every question was answered. Amazing selection and fun atmosphere. If you’re looking for an instrument this is your first and only stop! Also they have referrals for private lessons. If you are a seasoned musician you know!! If you’re dreaming of playing an instrument from electric guitar to saxophone to ukulele stop dreaming pull into Dorsey Music and get started! They will help you in every way possible! Thank you all and we look forward to coming back in!!!
These people rock, they work together to help you rather than trying to compete to sell you something. The guy in the Australian hat has an amazing ear and knows instruments and the guy in the baseball hat is a genius on guitars and stringed instruments. Everyone is super friendly.
Great experience buying multiple instruments and gear from them, their knowledge is superior to national chain music outlets.
I have never had a bad experience here.
The friendliest customer service. Professional, knowlegable.
Reasonaable prices. Location is great. The best variety. Impressive warranty programs
Comfortable environment. Family owned and operated.
What a fantastic music store!! We went in to rent a violin for our daughter and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and the prices were right in line with I would expect. I can't say enough good things about this store. As a drummer I was amazed at the incredible selection of percussion and drum set equipment. I could have spent hours alone in their cymbal section. Thank you!!
I love going to Dorsey Music if we need anything for our great granddaughter's violin. They have been so helpful and courteous when we have had any questions or concerns.
Wow! What a great place. I was helped by Brandon, Robina, and Jeff. They were so patient and knowledgeable for a brand new (hopeful) cellist. I probably spent an hour in there finding the right instrument and having all of my questions answered. You could feel their enthusiasm and support, so positive! Go see them!
I brought my sister in to help get her a violin to start learning to play and we were immediately greeted by Robina, who from the start was very excited about the instruments and knowledge she could share! She worked within the budget, gave honest information and even showed her how to properly hold the instrument and a few techniques that would help her begin her learning experience. I've always trusted this place personally as a musician and the way they immediately accepted a new musician right in without hesitation and helped so much was just super awesome and exciting to see!
Brought a classical guitar in that was buzzing badly at the bridge, their tech reached inside and fixed it on the spot. Very friendly and helpful group of people, excellent selection of guitars and non guitar instruments. Highly recommend.
Great locally owned music store. Not the best prices, not the best audio gear, but they are friendly, helpful, and care.
The drum tech, Brian, installed my new drum heads and tuned the snare for me for free. That's why I return.
Quality, informative and convenient rental experience! Robina gave me the run down on clarinets, myself, knowing nothing almost bought a colorful Amazon one for my 5th grader lol she briefed me on quality control, corks, reeds etc and ultimately facilitated my rental decision. They even deliver the
instrument directly to the school. This process took about 15 in store and some online paperwork. Easy peasy
Are You Experienced?
They have Red Sox plectrums!
Tube amps too. All kinds of instruments, I think I saw a kazoo. I spend hours here and it don't seem to bother a super friendly and helpful crew.
The staff are all so kind and EXTREMELY helpful. They made me feel comfortable in letting me test out guitars before I made a decision. Jeff was awesome and I will 100% be coming back!
The professional luthier Gary was amazing!! I went to see him to improve my setup on a recent acoustic guitar purchase and he not only suggested ways I can improve the playability of my guitar but also finished the work in record time! He originally quoted 2 weeks but it was ready for pick-up in 2 days! Again, very kind and courteous and excellent work! Highly recommend taking your guitar here.
Great selection and Brian was very knowledgeable and helpful. He even secured a guitar from the Ontario store and brought it to Boise location for me to try out. Highly recommend.
Shoutout to Brandon and Brian. You guys helped me find the perfect case for my new Limited PDP Wood Hoop 7.5x14 Snare Drum I have to safely transport five hours out. Thank you Brandon for also teaching me how to put strings on my bass. Even though I popped the E string and bought new ones but cut em too short, I was still happy that I learned. 😅 Your store is incredible and your knowledge is epic. I will be back once again!
We've rented from Dorsey twice when in town for our 15 year old son to play keyboard for his great grandmother . This time it was for her 100th birthday. Robina set us up and made sure we never have a reason to go elsewhere. Her knowledge and enthusiasm encourages musicians. You can't help but get excited about the possibilities in the store. Our son left with a desire to work for Dorsey (along with a big book full of classic solos!).
Everyone in the store seemed friendly, happy to help, and willing to do whatever necessary to make our experience first class. Thank you Dorsey!
So much choice! Like a coffee shop of flavor indecision but with music gear. What a audible-y delicious problem to enjoy. They went the extra mile to help me decide and sort out a chromatic tuner purchase.
Jeff and Kyle were both great, helped us get set up with everything we needed for our new Bass Guitar. Relaxed and fun atmosphere with good musical expertise.
Look forward to coming back in the future!
Gotta support your local music shops and this place makes it easy. About as good as it gets. Staff is super knowledgeable and you can tell they WANT to help you. It can be intimidating going into a shop like this as a newb but don't worry! They'll take care of you.
Took my sons sax in at end of July in order to have ample time to get it checked out before the start of his school year. Was told that the repair tech was behind and with school starting it would take at least a couple weeks, which was completely understandable. After reaching out in mid-august to get an update was told to call back the next week in order to have an idea of when to pick up. Waited to call and reached out just before the start of school (on 8/19). Was then told that it would be the next week, which I was still understanding of. However when I called on the 8/20 was passed over to the repair tech who said he couldn’t find the saxophone and would need more time to look around. Was called back by the store and told they still couldn’t find the saxophone, BUT were willing to offer me a great deal on a new one (mindful that the existing sax had just been paid for), which was not acceptable and relayed that I would rather the search more fully for the original one. Was contacted on 8/22 and told that they found the sax and that it had somehow ended up in Nampa but would be returned to Boise store on 8/23 for pick up. I picked up the sax today, and was offered yet again, a deal on a new sax which I declined as I don’t see the need for a new one on one that just needed some simple tuning and repairs. I instead picked up the original sax, HOWEVER, it still had not been repaired/tuned.
All in all, I’m pretty understanding, but after a month of leaving a sax at a store, being told it would be likely done week before school started or week of, then having it lost, then being offered to by a new one at a discount then only to be told the original had never been repaired or addressed and to come back in a couple weeks was pretty dang ridiculous. Pretty disappointed in all of this and get that mistakes happen, but to not address the original request after a lot of run around seems is sad.
I love that they have great knowledge of music and quality instruments. You will hardly find either at franchise-instrument center. I’m not sure if they still carry Mesa-Boogie or not but for the longest tome they were the only place to get one new. Seriously quality instruments new and like new. I’ve been a fan of this place for such a long time that it has once in a while made me broke. I hope Dorsey’s doesn’t go the way of Doyle’s or other shops. They are the last hidden gem of music in Boise. The guitar service/repair is second to none, too.
So very pleased with the customer service I recieved. I was looking for a guitar for my husband for his birthday. Eric took his time helping me. As I am NOT musically inclined. He played several for me, explained the difference in style and sound. I walked out with a beautiful Taylor in my price range and my husband LOVES it. Thankyou Dorsey Music! You have a customer for life!
Rented our speakers and microphone for our wedding from here and it was perfect!!!!!! Bryan was absolutely wonderful and so helpful. Showed us everything we needed to know and was just soooo so so nice. Cheapest rentals I found too! Highly recommend. Thank you thank you!
You should get to know the people who work here. I have always had good experiences. They are helpful. Product is priced competitively; they match and sometimes beat nationally advertised prices. Good selection of musical instruments. They do repairs and rentals.
I have shopped here only once. I have a typical music store that I shop at. I play the drums and had broke my sticks one day. And I was Boise. I wasn't too far from Dorsey Music so I figured what the hell. Turns out, I got a hell of a deal at this store. Drumsticks were not too spendy. And I like that!
Brian was very helpful. He was very patient while I spent hours A/B'ing acoustic guitars. He checked in with me periodically but didn't hover too much. He even played several guitars for me so I could hear them from the listener's perspective. In the end, I paid a bit less for my instrument at Dorsey than what Guitar Center was asking.
This shop has gotten some negative reviews, but nothing in my four recent and long visits corroborate those ratings. Friendly staff, very good selection, prices right in there with the market. I'll go back.
Great help and service! Staff was amazing in helping make decisions and suggestions. We will use Dorsey Music again for any musical needs!
Great place to buy anything music. Great selection, great customer service. Went to guitar center and no selection or customer service. So we went to Dorsey music and bought a bass guitar. Highly recommend
The staff in general are knowledgeable and friendly. I took a guitar in to get repaired and serviced. Their "guitar guy" would rather do things his way and not what the customer wants. We asked to not have the strings cut after replacing them, and he would not comply with our wishes. He stated that he cuts all the strings so fast it would "make our head spin", then related some story about the USAF bicycling team, and when he serviced their bikes he didn't pay any particular attention to their special requests. How that related to servicing a guitar, I'm not sure. I took it to mean that he would do the service, but his way with no regard to what any special request were. He did however replace a broken tuning know and didn't charge us. We took the guitar in for a broken tuning knob, but somehow there were 2 broken knobs. They are OK, just don't have any special requests.
I have lived near this business since I moved from Seattle to Boise a few years ago. And as a novice musician, I'd never walked in their doors until today.
Why did I today?
Well I bought a guitar recently and I needed help getting her tuned properly. I was a bit nervous walking in with an instrument not purchased at their store, but the guys were more than kind and showed me how to tune her well (with my new to me, electronic tuning gizmo! lol).
Anyway the experience to me was so great and the knowledge so helpful from these experts? I have gone on my fb page and recommended to my friends to frequent this store. I will soon again as I need some accessories for my new best guitar friend!
My two cents and thank you Dorsey Music!
Great staff and knowledge. Super cool uke music book collection
I recently lost my job and decided to learn guitar with all the free time I have now. I shopped all over Boise looking for what I wanted to be my first guitar and ended up buying from Dorsey Music. The person who helped me was no expert in guitar but still was able to get me exactly what I wanted and needed. His name was Brian and was actually a drummer. In my shopping around I found him to be the easiest person to buy from. He played some cords on different guitars for me
(seems how I don't know how to play yet) just so I could hear the sound of different guitars. Other stores I shopped at like Guitar Center where extremely rude and unhelpful. They made me fell like I was dumb for even wanting to learn how to play a guitar. I am extremely happy with the service I received and will be a long time customer of Dorsey Music based on my experience with them. I would recommend them to anyone looking to purchase there first guitar.
Great staff!
Brian is a great salesperson. He's knowledgeable, patient and there is no hard sell. (Doesn't have to be when you sell great products)
Gary is an excellent luthier. He can bring your old beat up guitar back to life.
I'm much happier shopping here than big franchise GC. Dorsey appreciates their customers and tries to keep them.
Some nice gear for sale. Staff was friendly and let me check stuff out and take my time. At the end of the day they didn't have the amp I was looking for but my parameters were pretty tight and they didn't try to sell me something I didn't want. Will shop here in the future.
This place is a hidden gem! The staff was fun, knowledgeable and so patient with my kids. They were thorough and not pushy at all as we made our choices. I will definitely go back for future musical needs. Thank you for the fantastic service!
Fabulous customer service!!! I really recommend this place!!!! The staff stayed after hours to help with a last minute instrument repair and were very happy to help! This is our new music store and I really recommend it be yours too!
I had my Fender Strat set up here and they really did an amazing job. It’s silky smooth now. I’ll have every guitar set up here from now on.
Awesome store with an excellent variety and selection of Guitars, Bass Guitars, Pianos, Keyboards, Drums, microphones, ukalales, accessories and almost everything you could think of. Beautiful and amazing store! They also have a great music selection and awesome staff! Thanks for everything!!!
John (the sales clerk) is a wonderful drummer and quite knowledgeable about their products. I had a wonderful experience here.
The only drawback would be the limited brass selection.
Visited store for first time. Had a very nice conversation with Sam about Dorsey's. Sam is very personable.
I was very impressed by the store layout and Sam's knowledge.
Thank you Sam. Glen Whatley - Mars Amp Repair
I dont understand why theres so many negative reviews, I've been going here for a long time. The staff is very laid back and the repairman is quite skilled. Unlike Dunkley's, where if you need something as simple as a screw tightened and it takes 3 weeks to get fixed, the repairman will often fix it right there for you. However those of you complaining about the quotes on the repair cost, its best just to take it back to the repairman if you want an accurate price.
Great music shop, done a lot of business there since moving to Boise this year. Locally owned, personal service, they know your name when you walk in; doesn't get any better'n that.
Amazing, got my violin here and it works amazingly, rental is good, and all other parts of violin and/or case are high quality and very good.
Great selection of new instruments, very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Also they have the best luthier in the valley Chris Santa!
Very nice, weren't scared to ask if there was something they could help me with, had some good recommendations and they'll let you go hands on with pretty much anything in the store.
Dorsey Music is the place I have always gone for my music and for my musical instruments. Their selection is amazing, and they always have what I need. The staff is also very helpful.
Robina is just amazing she explained all the details of the Roland I was interested in and was kind enough to show me this amazing store. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
Very nice and helpful and they knew what they were talking about. I had bought a guitar from them and they helped me a lot. I would recommend going there
Really neat shop. I enjoy looking around and seeing all the cool instruments. The staff was pretty helpful and finding what you need.
Super welcoming atmosphere, plenty of options for instruments, amazing service, overall an amazing place for music!
Fantastic place to buy any instrument you could imagine. Great instructors also. Sales staff are also musicians...Can't beat that!
Great service, great products, and great rental deals. I rented a violin there and you pay for 2 years and after that you get the violin as your OWN!
Staff was not very knowledgeable when it came to anything electric guitar related but had a good selection and decent pricing
