Reviews of Hagley Museum
Interesting history and example of water powered machines. You can watch as sluice gates are opened and water begins to start turbines. Very cool demos. Last entry is 3pm but if you want to visit the home, you should arrive by 2pm. We arrived at 2:30pm and had missed the last shuttle bus that takes you to the home. The museum offers discount rates for people who have and active EBT card ($2 per person).
This is a great place to check out if you are into history. This is were the company DuPont was founded. Check out the website to see upcoming events. They tend to have a lot for young kids as well as adults during the week. If you like my post follow me. .
Natural resources beauty kingdom!
You can watch and enjoy waterfalls sound very closely , it’s small height but still very beautiful.
Very rare find old and big stones construction which you can easily find here and very climbing hill experience is very nice.
The Hagley Museum is fascinating. It is a gunpowder factory that helped make the DuPont fortune and is quite a large campus. You can walk or take the shuttle and the tours are very informative. Situated along the Brandywine river, there are many mills and building to explore. Learn how gunpowder was made and many other interesting things. Our favorites were the tour of the gunpowder mills, run by gravity powered water turbines (it ends with a BANG) and the machine shop (so jealous). The museum is near the DuPont Estate and both can be seen in a day if you are ready to walk. I Highly recommend visiting, especially if you like engineering, machines, etc.
This is the home of E. DuPont and the Black Powder mills. The DuPont family was very prominent in Wilmington Delaware. They arrived in the early 1800’s. They started their business in the manufacturing of black gun powder
It is a beautiful place and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating.
There is so much to see. It’s a huge estate but they have shuttle busses to take you around.
There is so much to see and it’s fun for the whole family.
So much rich history here to see and learn. I sure appreciate the buses to get from one exhibit to another. It's a distance to walk all of it. Glad to see continued improvements made to keep it all safe for visitors to enjoy for the future. Would love to see the Dupont house gardens restored one day.
one of the better cultural activities in the Brandywine Valley. learn something new every time you visit.
Awesome place! Definitely worth the ticket price. You can down all day here walking around, learning about the history, and watching several exhibitions. And this is during COVID when we couldn’t go inside anywhere except the gift shop. The Brandywine River is beautiful and they have several picnic tables and benches to relax on. Definitely worth the trip.
So much more to it than I realized! You could really spend all day here. Bring a picnic lunch or at least a snack because you will probably be here a long time. Pretty grounds and road to follow down to the river where there are demonstrations and so much to look at and learn. If you don’t want to walk you can take a shuttle. What I liked too is that it is not a tour, (except the house) you can go at your own pace and do whatever you want. 15$ admission was worth it.
One of the top three at that top of my list of personal favorites for DuPont centric museums. DE has a 'passport' offer where you can go to many of the highlights found in the state, including this location. The house overlooks the areas where the river was harnessed to mill gunpower. There is so much to see for children through adults.
This was my first visit, there is lots of historical structures left to see. The grounds are extensive, and its along the Brandywine River, so its nice for a hike too. I enjoyed the mansion tour and had a nice lunch at the cafe. There's not a lot of food places close by (I saw none on the way in), so pack a lunch if you are making a day of it, but I enjoyed the cafe. I ended up spending almost 6 hours here, taking pictures, and a leisurely self guided tour. The little buses take you around the site, if you wish. Its not really a place for young children, but I would say 7 and up would enjoy it. Its also a great place for couples, I saw they have picnic dinners for 2 on select days in the summer and would make a romantic date. I came on a weekday, so after the school groups left in the morning, I had the place mostly to myself. I definitely want to come back! Update: I came back for a Christmas tour, and it was worth the 2nd trip, I saw and learned things I hadn't on my 1st visit, and everyone is so friendly! I plan on a spring visit. Hagley is great in any season!
Hagley Museum details the history of the Dupont Gun Powder operation along Brandywine Creek in the 1700-1800s. It had a very informative museum and beautiful grounds including a machine shop, gun powder demonstration, Foreman's house, and one room school house. The museum itself currently isn't open due to COVID but everything else is. They have lots of cool events each year as well including an excellent care show in September.
Such a blast (haha) being here! We stopped in just before 4pm and enjoyed the last hour the museum was open. Wish we could have spent more time there! In the short one hour we got to see the machine shop demo and gunpowder demo. Both are amazing. Highly, highly recommend!
Nice quiet historical place near Brandywine river. Good for couples and family. Historical place where Dupont's family lived and produced gun powder
They have the best 4th July fireworks ever.
My husband and I had so much fun coming to this park! It was $15 for admission, and there is a bus that will take you from site to site although you can easily walk the first half of it. We were initially let down because we thought it was going to be more of an arboretum/garden/free roaming place like the Nemours Estate (IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE NEMOURS ESTATE, YOU HAVE TO GO!!!) but it was more like a limited guided tour. Having said that, it was a lot of fun and the staff is so hands on that we learned more about the history of the Du Ponts than in any of the other sites we have been to! (And we have been to several). A charming and hilarious tour guide brings you through the house, you can spend time walking the vegetable gardens and learning more about the land, the bus brings you back to the path where you can walk and explore a little bit of the surrounding land, you get to see how they used to utilize steam and the waterwheel, they fire a mini canon (this was super fun to see), and there is a gunpowder demonstration. You can also walk up to the schoolhouse and practice your quill writing skills, and you can tour an old house where the workers used to live. It was a very educational experience and we do not regret going at all! FYI you will not get cell service here, although the visitors center does have WIFI.
Very interesting museum. I arrived late so I could not tour the entire property which consists of several buildings: working 19th century mill, stationary period steam engine, home of I.E. Du Pont, school house and a few others.
The main building was very informative and had several interactive diaramas, a few pieces from the Du Pont family very well preserved and some very interesting information about the formation of their company.
The property is very beautiful as well and the staff was very nice and well informed.
Tickets only $15 for adults.
Be sure to give yourself at least 3-3.5 hours to tour the property and keep in mind they close at 5pm.
Very good experience, i will go soon again
One of the best places to visit. It's nice to see the vintage collection and the history of the French family who came and settled down in the United states. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciate the guide for taking time and explaining us in detail about the history of the Hagley.
Very friendly staff and tour guides. Everyone of them. They call themselves DuPonters, as do all who work for the DuPont company I am told. All who worked there were very enthusiastic about the DuPont family and what they have done for this country. I would say that their narrative was a little slanted to only see the good, but isn’t that the way of all tour guides? Just take it with a grain of salt when you go and use logic and reasoning. Such as when they tell you that the DuPont’s “educated” all of the poor children of their workers to the point they could read. This meant they were taught during Sunday School for one hour each week. As a first grade teacher I know the children would not have had enough educational time to learn how to read at this rate. I discussed this with my guide but it was insisted that everyone learned to read because of the DuPont’s. I found this delusional. They also refused to broach the topic of slavery or what the DuPont’s did in the later years (think Agent Orange). However, it was very interesting to see the old mills, how they created the first gun powder, how they chose their location, and how everything worked.
This would not be the top of my list for places to visit. But if you have a couple of hours and want to learn a little bit of history it would be worth it.
Absolutely wonderful atmosphere. Loved strolling around the grounds and the guides are excellent at explaining the history of the place.
Great history lesson about the start for the DuPont family in Deleware. The house and furnishings are relatively modest compared to Winterthur and Nemours, but it is still well worth visiting. It is a fun way to spend a few hours.
Great museum and grounds to explore and learn about DuPont history. All staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly!
I emailed to make sure everything was going to be open in January, I was told yes. But when we go there only inside was open. Overall it was fun for the 20 minutes it took to walk through.
Wow! What a gem! We had a blast during our first visit and can't wait to return! So many fun activities for kids plus plenty of historical and technical info for my husband! 😊 …
This place tells the history behind the production of "black powder" by the DuPont company, as well as the family behind it. Wonderful tours and beautiful property and gardens.
Had an absolutely awesome time here. The guides and staff are so knowledgeable and friendly. This is the site of the first DuPont powderworks, and includes factory and residential pieces. The mansion and gardens are beautiful. The workshops, which still have working steam and river powered lathes, drills and other equipment were fascinating. Great piece of history.
This was a great experience. We enjoyed a tour of the family home with a very knowledgeable guide. After which we went down for a demo in the machine shop and then the gun powder demo both of which were educational and entertaining. We ran out of time to see the workers area. It nice that the ticket allows you entrance in 2 days.
Nice historical buildings and artifacts. Easy to locate on Google Maps but once you pay admission, directions to visit exhibits are poor. All signs direct you to exit, visit the Soda House (wedding venue) or parking lots. Cannot locate the barn, garden or DuPont home…..main exhibits for the museum. When ask a bus driver for direction, he ignored us. Later on we saw the bus driver took passengers to the barn.
Lovely place for a relaxed weekend getting immersed in history related to the 8th largest. Chemical company in the world today. You also come to know about the Dupont family started humbly, the importance of Black Powder/gun powder in the 1800's and why they decided to start in Wilmington. Tremendous piece of history for kids and adults . They also give a tour of the 1st Dupont family home, a tour of the gun powder mills and how they made it and finally live demo of firing a mini canon using gun powder 👍. Beautiful place to just walk around as well .
Note : Gets more interesting if you ask questions. I asked them about the role of the family in the civil war given they were the largest producers in US and I heard what I had suspected. Visit and find out :) .
Be advised that they are using a different entrance, and it is not obvious where that is. Unless you contact them, you will think they are closed. The entrance (for the time being) is the Library (298 Buck Road, Wilmington, DE 19807).
Unfortunately we did not find out until we had already left the state. So my rating is arbitrary. Hopefully they will provide signage for new visitors.
This is a must if you're at all interested in the DuPont family history. Well preserved. Great tour; very informative.
Wonderful history of the DuPont family and their origins. History of the Brandywine River mills and industry of the area is very interesting and educational.
Beautiful home and gunpowder mill
Awesome place we loved it there we spent five hours there and we saw everything there are three different tours two on the hour and one on the half hour one of the tours on the hour takes you an hour they also have a lot of cool dioramas some of them move they have a cafe there that serves good food you also get to look at the old buildings and if you get tired of walking they have a bus.
Spent 4+ hours there and easily could have done more. Excellent, smart, engaging docents, fascinating history, cool museum, beautiful setting
Amazing place for the scientifically minded! If you have any interest in chemistry you'll love the place. The gunpowder mills, the water-powered systems, and the museum on the history of the DuPont company (much of which involves polymers) are first-rate.
I fell in love with every detail. So very beautiful. The deep history as well as the craftsmanship is amazing. ❤❤❤❤
Wonderful place to go see and learn the beginnings of the Du Pount industry. Very peaceful. Everything is wheelchair accessible.
It's all about how Do Pont got his start. We had a beautiful day, I would not recommend a hot day, much walking, wear good shoes. Beautiful place to visit along side the river.
This place is great. We have the Brandywine valley passport and decided to stop by here on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't crowded. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. There are many things to see. I highly recommend checking out the demonstrations.
Wonderful tour of the house, garden and powder mill from enthusiastic, knowledgeable and cheerful .
It's interesting, beautiful and full of history.
Great place to explore history with kids. Fun photo op along the Delaware Discoveries Trail.
Loved it so much spent 2 days here! If in the area it is a must see! Engineering at its finest !
Well kept grounds. Educational. Saturday is science day for kids so they enjoyed activities.
Awesome area to pat a visit. Loved to be able to take photos and learn the history of the powder mill!
I enjoyed my time here. The live demonstrations were a fun feature. The gardens were nice, but not overly large. All of the tour guides were very knowledgeable.
Great place to visit. I spent over 4hours here and enjoyed every minute of it.
Great place to explore while learning the history of Dupont's beginnings!
It was a quite place to walk a sunny day. To walk back to a different time in history. A place where gun powder was made in the United States.
A beautiful place to visit. A must see if you're in the Wilmington area.
As a 1dr time visitor, the family took advantage of the free admission week. Great to get outside and explore history.
It a nice thing Hagley does on Wednesdays. But there should be advertising about it. I was not aware ppl can go on Wed evening for walks or a bike ride until 8pm. I will put it on my calendar for next yr.
Pretty cool place, you can actually see how the machinery in the workshops works.
Went here a while back, bout 2-3 years ago I went with my grandmother. Staff was super friendly and explained any questions anyone in our "group" had. I will suggest to those who have sensitive ears to avoid the gunpowder "exhibit" or be prepared cause they blew a bit of gunpowder, at least when we went there, they did. Learned a lot and took some awesome pictures but I dropped my phone into the river when trying to take a neat picture of the water moving.
One of the best museum experiences I've ever had! The grounds are stunningly beautiful, and the whole area just feels so peaceful. Most importantly though, the staff is simply incredible. Some of the nicest and most helpful people I have ever met, they were extremely courteous and went above and beyond to keep me informed and assisted. Laura especially helped me a lot with a photoshoot I was working on. She did so much to help me and made my time there so much fun. Not to mention, she was just great to be around and hang out with while there. Rodney was also extremely kind and funny, and gave a fascinating lecture on the history of the location. These two are the reason I plan on getting a seasonal pass here, so they are definitely keepers. Thank you to the Hagley Museum for a wonderful time and the chance to experience some wonderful Delaware history. I highly recommend checking it out, chances are you'll see me there!
Beauty, tranquility. You can feel the history all around you. Wonderful guides, a sweet day to be had here. The sound of the river and geese is all a part of taking you back in history and bringing joy to your day. Great little gift shop, too!
My husband and I had a nice experience here. They were very friendly and the grounds are beautiful.
I grew up in the Wilmington area and never really explored it until my nephews came to visit. It's a great learning experience for all ages with beautiful scenery to boot. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.
Great day out. Plenty to explore. Lots of history.
Great docents and its clear the museum staff have been doing so much work. New stonework and historic building repair. Much work in the old gardens have them looking great. This is a must see museum for people interested in the duPonts, history, gunpowder, water power, and old machinery. Our just a wonderful walk along the roads and trails.
Great museum. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly
This is a unique place in the region, and one of my family's favorite places to come, in all seasons. Picturesque strolls, Science and engineering programs for the kids (and adults alike), the Fall Classic Car show, Fireworks, Gun Powder demonstrations, Summer Bike and Hike, and much more!
My son likes looking for the fish and snakes that call the river and rocks home.
Bring your family out today and experience your own memories.
Great volunteer guides add a lot. Machine shop and history of gunpowder were very well presented. Also the steam demo. Main building temporarily being renovated but for 9.00 just go. Especially if nice weather
$15 entrance fee allows you spend all day at this wonderful museum complex. Staff is top notch, lots to see, great exhibits with staff that knows how to narrate the story of DuPont's black powder in the US.
Large spralinng facility with continuous short bus service; great walk as well if you so choose. We spent 5 hours and did not see everything. Well worth the time and small fee. You won't be disappointed. Get there early!
A rich history of Dupont and gun powder manufacturing. Great place to visit with the kids. They often have fireworks in the summer. Learn a little history, take a tour and stroll along the waterway. Nice grounds. They also run beer events over the summer. Definitely recommend.
One of my Favorite Places to visit in the U.S. Located in the heart of Wilmington , De. Its beautiful and historic. Great place to take a walk and enjoy nature. If you're in the area check it out!
Attended the Wednesday evening bike, hike and Brew. What a great idea! I was pleased to see how many people attended. There were lots of families and both hikers and bikers. We ordered a picnic dinner which was delicious and very reasonably priced. Beware biking the big hill! You will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when you are done.
Wonderful place. Lots of walking - mostly level. Excellent staff - they know their stuff. We spent almost 3 hours there and didn't see everything. We will go back when in the area.
I was really impressed with the tours. The information was interesting and the area was pleasant to be in. Even my 11 year old son enjoyed the tour, including the tour of the mansion. There was more to do then I had realized and we will probably go back in the fall. I imagine the trees along the river will be beautiful.
The museum was fascinating. It goes into how the DuPonts started to make their fortune. You can tour their first house which is nice but nothing like the later mansions in grandiosity. The really interesting part is the mill. They made black powder for guns and cannons etc. Great exhibits and explanations. Also, live demonstrations of a metal working shop, and tours of the mill buildings.
I've been here 3 times, always with different members of the family, it's the beginning history of the Dupont family. Nice museum, there is a nice little cafe that serves organic style lunches, nothing fancy. Places is very nice, museum was established in the early 1950's and improvements have come along over time, many volunteers support the museum. I like the museum, the displays of the steam engine, the repair shop, and the main museum, at the front. You may not have enough time to make it a day, it's that big. The grounds are excellent. It competes with many other excellent nearby attractions. Good for the older generation. Being here 3 times, I don't mind coming back.
A great tour. The tour guides were so detailed in their stories & I learned wonderful history about our country's early beginning & about the DuPont family. Wonderful place for families to visit. Loved it all. Will be back.
Definitely a must see if you're in Delaware. The original location of the DuPont gunpowder manufacturing facilities. The homes and gardens are very well maintained and manicured. It's not hard to easily spend 8-10 hours here with the older buildings and some of the original buildings. Nice view along the Brandywine as well. Plenty to see and if you're into photography, absolutely take your camera!
Visited the museum last year. Great to see the history of DuPont when you visit the USA from the Netherlands for work (DuPont). Great experience to see how old equipment is used. Fantastic to see all the enthusiasm from the volunteers. You feel directly welkom when you enter the museum.
Went to the museum on Saturday afternoon. Wish we had gotten there in the morning! There was so much to see. Fascinating history of the DuPont family and their earliest business...gunpowder! Lots of actual working 1800's machinery demonstrations. We adults were entranced. There were also some children there and they seemed to be very interested as well. We'll have to go back again to see what we missed.
We visited Hagley after a short drive from Auburn Valley State Park. There is plenty of parking and picnic tables close to the parking lot. There are flushing toilets by the parking lot too.
We bought out tickets from the gift shop and waited at the designated boarding station for the bus to the main house.
The bus makes one stop at the machine shop to pick up passengers to take them to the house.
At the last bus stop (Eleutherian Mills), there is a guide who provides introductory information about the family. After that you walk to the barn, the gardens, outside the home and the lower level of the barn. All of this places have a guide.
We were there for about one hour and then waited for the bus. The bus made a brief stop ( about 10 minutes) at the Steam engine house for a demonstration.
There was another stop at Machine shop. This was our stop and from here we visited the machine shop and had a Black powder explosion demonstration. We toured the rest of the buildings and then walked towards the visitor center to exit.
Bathrooms are available throughout the property.
This is a fantastic place. We had only a morning to spend here last August and didn't have time to finish everything. We're planning to go back this year. There's a little bus to take you around to the house and various other sites. Don't miss the demonstration of how they tested the gunpowder. Just the natural setting (wonderful huge trees and a river) is worth the ticket price, but there's so much more--very educational, too. I believe if you buy your ticket after 2 PM, you can come back the next day. Kids would love it, too. Lots of things to do outdoors as well as the museum. Plan to spend the day.
Great and awesome place! Definitely worth a drive and visit. It is cool to walk around and see the various buildings and demonstrations! They provide a great atmosphere and facility. I want to go back again!
Did the hike and bike night. Delightful scenery, delicious ice cream truck and beer available for purchase. I would enjoy coming during regular hours as well to see the rest of the buildings. So much history and stuff to learn here as well as some cool things to see!
Hagley in and of itself has a nice historic presentation on industry on the Brandywine River. The docents do a great job with the visitors, especially school-age children. It's a pretty place for a walk along the river, too. However, the STEM event we lucked into was awesome. My granddaughters loved the hands on learning, and came away with a lot of enthusiasm to continue doing similar things at home. Fun, but not a Disney princess. It was great!
Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powered by the Brandywine that surrounded it. It is 235 acres of wooded hills along the Brandywine River with hundreds of stone ruins from the black powder industry, restored buildings from the business, and the first du Pont family home built in The United States. The site is a National Historic Landmark, National Recreation Trail, and a Historic Engineering Landmark.
Five generations of du Pont family members lived in the house on the property since its completion in 1803. Today you will see it much as it was when the last family member lived there.
A must see when in the Wilmington area. A unique historic attraction with great tour guides. Enjoy nature and learn about the Du Pont's during the industrial revolution. See heavy machinery nearly 200 years old still operating. Great for all ages.
From the moment we walked in the visitor center until we left, we had an awesome experience. Since it was a chance of rain all day, I believe that kept most people away and that was okay with us. We were the only ones on the van with the very well educated driver who personalized the tour as we went along the route. Then we got to the house and was again given one on one service with the tour guide who really knew her info too. We ended with the guided tour of the Roll Mill, a must for the history in it's self. Our tour guide was even generous to do it all in the rain so we could fully experience the whole tour. I highly recommend visiting the Hagley Museum!
Such a beautiful place! Really a very inexpensive outing for the family and worth every penny. We went on a science Saturday with 2 10 year old girls and they were thoroughly entertained all afternoon. Get there early in the day so you have plenty of time to truly experience everything they have to offer.
Due to COVID-19 many of the buildings were closed so I'll go back once they are fully open. The gunpowder demo was good and so was the intro to the 5 generations of duPont. It was interesting to read about his car factory and to hear from a mechanic about the car on display. For the $9 fee ($8 if you ordered the ticket online) it was a good history lesson and I am glad I discovered it today. This is where the duPont's got their start and hearing that story was great.
Hayley museum and mills is the site of Henry DuPont's first business created in the late 1800s ; a black powder mill used to create gun powder for the Civil War.The tour is very informative with docents walking you through the entire process that DuPont created in his original mill. A caution for anyone with any mobility problems; you need to be able to walk through a lot of uneven terrain ( as someone with a cane, I found it rather difficult). A tour of DuPont's first home and gardens is also included. If you are into early American history, you will enjoy this tour. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and fun.
Very knowledgeable staff and pleasant, educational experience.
Such an interesting place to visit. Go there to see how the du Pont story started.
Very interesting. The photo of the turbine driven by the water was incorrectly attributed to the adjacent state park. Lots of history here. The flower and vegetable garden is being returned to its historical origins. Very peaceful and the trees are wonderful.
Went here yesterday and everyone was just so wonderful and knowledgeable. The demonstrations done by George and Rich were especially interesting. Will definitely come back. Fun for kids and adults.
Great place to visit and get some local and National history. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The E.I. Dupont House was beautiful inside and out. The displays and exhibits are great to experience, some coming to life with stories, lights, and movement.
Surprisingly interesting! More of a science museum than a history museum, which I wasn’t expecting. Once you get into the main grounds, the applied science exhibits are fascinating. They bring many physics and chemistry concepts to life.
Excellent part of early American history, there seems to be something of interest here for any mind set. Being a 30 + year machinist I obviously loved the machine shop and the evolution of the machinery.
The Soda House at the Hagley Museum was the venue for our wedding reception. Heather was extremely helpful, friendly, and professional. The grounds are excellent for taking photos, and the tours they offer during museum hours are delightful. We even had a cannon demonstration prior to our reception, and everybody loved it! Way to start our new life off with a bang! Thank you, Hagley!
I never realized how the DuPonts got their start. This museum is where they made their first significant money. Their is a nice mansion but it is tiny compare to their later ones. It is a mill where they made black gun powder. There are many exhibits that are fascinating if you like history. There is a machine shop where they demonstrate the various tools and many other things to see
A must see! A hidden gem in DE. Coming from Baltimore we had never heard of this site. It turned out to be a museum as well as a working water wheel power 'plant' situated on the beautiful Brandywine river. It was owned by the Dupont family. It has a functioning steam engine as well. It's worth the trip just to take a walk along the river. If you're at all interested in history or if you aren't this is a good place to start ;)
During the week is great to tour. Not crowded. Belin house cafe has wonderful food, great crab cakes, organic and vegan selections. Prices are inexpensive in my opinion. Tour guides are retired professionals, that can convey the rich history.
We are members but decided to go on one of the coldest days of this winter so far... The place is beautiful, even when there is no green in the trees... The staff are delightful and made the best of it when the welcome center suddenly lost power... On the shuttle up to the house, we saw a bald eagle swooping over the Brandywine River looking for fish and on the way back we saw him perched in a tree. Hagley is well worth a visit in any weather...
This place is wonderful! I grew up in NJ and didn't even know it was there. The staff are very knowledgeable and happy to tell you about everything. Great walking paths and lots of information. Got a membership so we can go again soon!
What a great museum! No matter what you like, this is a great museum. Great 19th Century history. Wonderful hands-on science exhibits for kids. Beautiful gardens and grounds. Industrial technology. So much to see and so well presented. Love it!
Working history museum, with extensive early industrial architecture. Loved seeing the working water turbine and it's connection to the metal shop. The ground are fascinating and we'll with a few hours walk about. The river is beautiful.
I was only able to do the walking tour of the community down below. The staff and the sites were phenomenal with the restoration and preservation of a time period. It was a great historical visit.
Very educational, and full of a lot of activities for everyone to enjoy!
Amazing experience! Lovely place!
Very nice place with informative, lovingly presented tours. The outdoor walks are picturesque and the old processes and facilities are the right balance of "as it was." Recommend visiting in the spring and fall, or cooler summer days.
Amazing place to start with learning history of Dupont family.
Lot of fun. If you coming 3+ people or more than one time - grab membership.
Make sure to visit different seasons.
Can't say enough about this wonderful tour! You not only your through the home, but also the machines shop, steam engine room, grounds, water wheels, etc. It was so much to see. You could easily spend the day here! Tour guides were top notch!!!
Went for a field trip back in middle school. The scenery was beautiful as we went in the fall. The history of it was kind of interesting.. not that I remember any of it lol, but nice for a field trip..
The lady that does the tour of the bedroom upstairs needs to learn how to deal with children. She seemed really stressed out and constantly saying don't do this and don't do that. I don't recommend this place for young children especially those with behavior issues. The parking for buses is a hike and a half and it was freezing cold outside. The school house teacher was nice and so was the gentleman who does the cookies.
Such a huge tour and the grounds were so large we were grateful they had a shuttle bus to take us everywhere. We were really impressed.
We took the evening tour of Hagley for the holidays. Fabulous! Our dolcent shared so many great stories of the duPont's and their history. This is a don't miss hidden gem of an event. Go if you have a chance!
The guides were fantastic. We started with a great welcome from Laura Beasley. Then house tour by Rodney Simmons to machine shop Debbie Krape then roll mill Bill Baldwin. They all did a great job. Must see.
Really great museum to start the visit, beautiful walk alongside the river and superb attractions on route with guides that can't be faulted for their knowledge and friendliness. Certainly worth a visit, but plan on spending the next part of the day here to get the most out of it.
This place is historical gem. In addition to history, it has a regular science program for kids as well. It's also just beautiful. Love visiting with the fam a few times per year.
Impressive bldgs & grounds. Sm buses ( with a/c!) shuttle you to mansion & grounds. All docents well versed & cordial. ($15adult/$11 senior).DuPont ruled the world for 100+yrs with gun & black powder production!
We were looking for something to do, we picked Hagey Museum and was not disappointed. So much to see and the interpreters were very knowledgeable. We will definitely go back, maybe in the spring.
Spent a lot of time at Bagley and the DuPont grounds as a kid. Brought events from local history to life and made it interesting. Definitely worth taking the time to tour!!! Staff is both knowledgeable and friendly.
We found out about the yearly car show here and decided to make a day trip out of it. The car show was awsome, most all makes and models had representation
The local museums that displayed cars had knowledgeable people present so any questions could be answered. A local contingent of British car enthusiasts were there as well so I had an opportunity to meet new people.
I only gave it four stars becouse I have to go back and go thru the actual Museum.
Very well presented history of the beginning of DuPont
Well documented history of one of the oldest companies in the nation, DuPont. A company that has dwindled in recent decades, it attracted brilliant minds that made breakthrough inventions over the past 215 years. Every day you see or feel something that was first developed by a DuPont engineer or scientist. It all started here.
Great experience for kids and adults alike. Have been coming here for years and the staff are as friendly and helpful as ever. Only wish they tied their talks to the Delaware social studies standards language.
Definitely check out Hagley before Winather if planning to see both. The docents were super knowledgeable and it was fun to see the salesman powder explosion demo.
Great exhibits and scenic grounds. I was especially impressed that the water-powered equipment is in working condition after so many years and is available for demonstration.
We just recently joined and made a couple visits but still have not seen all that the Hagley has to offer. The DuPont company was and still is a great example of American entrepreneurship and this museum offers a glimpse of how French immigrants came across the Atlantic and helped make America great.
Ok, enough platitudes. The Hagley is a great place to take the kids with plenty of outdoor activities and demonstrations (the gunpowder demonstration is my fave!). You can't do it all in one day.
Again, we haven't explored all there is but by being members, we are eligible to attend the classic car show and the Independence Day fireworks, both of which are considered the best in the region. I'm also looking forward to seeing it decorated at Christmas time.
The outdoor stuff like the mill ruins was pretty neat to explore (even in the cold and rain). The mansion was kind of underwhelming and not at all as you'd expect from a Dupont house.
Go here if you want to learn about the history of DuPont!
Beautiful property and very interesting history. The guides are very friendly and knowledgeable about the DuPonts and the grounds.
It is a jewelry for USA industrial museum
I have been there twice and will go again. Very nice place to visit and learn about how things got produced 200 years ago!
A beautiful museum village that brings to life the story of the origins of the DuPont family, Delaware and the Brandywine Valley. Knowledgeable staff, first rate preservation in a bucolic setting.
The Hagley Museum, might be better named and more widely recognized if it was called 'The DuPont Gunpowder Museum'. This is where it all started when the French immigrant, E.I. du Pont bought several hundred acres of land beside the Brandywine River and built both the family home and the gunpowder mills that made the fortunes of generations of du Ponts. The original family home, which sits on a hill overlooking the powder mills is restored and can be toured. Nowadays, this former industrial site is a living museum, and a testament to the methods of early American industrialization, where you can observe how water turbines and later a steam engine supplied the power needed to keep the power mills running. There are daily demonstrations in the machine shop and even a live demonstration of a black powder detonation. Highly recommended.
Watch for re-opening date, and then go. No better place for shaking off virus stir-crazy!
The gunpowder works will engage boys - it is awesome. Girls too!
Wonderful museum. Lots to see with very informative demos. Docents really knowlegeable. Some walking but they had a bus that ran throughout the day.
Great experience, even during the winter. The tour guide was outstanding! If you have a couple of hours, it's worth the time
Beautiful! The grounds were neat and we'll kept and it was the perfect, covid-safe outting for me and my toddler.
Way more fun and informative than I expected. Getting to be in a fully-functional, water-driven machine shop and seeing the gunpowder power exhibition really made this a good way to spend an afternoon.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. The tour guides all had a great attitude even in the horrible heat we had that day, and we enjoyed their quirky personality.
Everyone should understand something of how life was lived 200 years ago and how the ingenuity of people then helped bring us to where we are today. Hagley is an excellent place for young and old to gain those insights.
Interesting history of the house. I find Mrs. Crowning shield to be an interesting DuPont.
This home has history.
A wonderful look at 19th century engineering and technology. The staff are friendly and helpful as well as exceptionally knowledgeable! Great place to visit if you're into the history of technology.
Great tours, lovely ambiance, very educational for those in 2nd grade and up. Lovely gardens. I go there every chance I get.
What a marvelous, unplanned discovery! Curiosity got me there, and the enjoyment of the experience will keep me going back for more. So much to see and learn about, all in the most peaceful environment.
Excellent 2-3 hour tour of Dupont/gunpowder history. Beautiful spot to walk around if it's not too hot/humid.
Hagley houses so much history and is such a neat place to visit and learn some of Delaware’s history. The tour takes you back to how things were done in the 1800’s
It was great. So glad we went. The tour guides are very professional and the tours are so informative. Well worth the money
Exceeded my expectations! The tour guides made it very educational and enjoyable. Good for kids too with the demos.
Thank you Linda P. Gross

Took a short tour with my wife. Plan to go back again. I love the history of the place
I remember this place from 50 years ago. They have opened up a great deal more, and I found it especially interesting to explore places I always wondered about.
Beautiful is museum showing off how gunpowder used to be made. Note, office hours (closed on weekends) are different from museum hours (Open on weekends)
Mary was the BEST. Put this historic house on your must see.
The birthplace of DuPont Company on the banks of the Brandywine. Historical tour and beautiful grounds.
Great museum very interesting, unexpected... great for kids with engineering interests, much more than history...
Surprising location with so many details and interesting tangents, one could easily spend more than a full day. Very serene setting, as well. Highly recommended.
Amazing museum! A lot of history from the 19th century. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
A must see if you are in the area.
Tram tour to the house through the gardens.
Guided tour in the house is very good with a lot of history.
Best place ever. Other museums and locations talk about water powered, but it is alive and well here at Hagley.
We like going there. Seem to learn new things each time we go. I am a huge fan of the machine shop.
I love the history in DE! This museum is so well run. The grounds are gorgeous!
Excellent Du Pont estate museum, staff is very friendly and knowledge, well worth the admission multiple times over!
Unique and quaint . Lovely scenery. Winterthur right up the street
Nice Staff and great explanations about the historical products made there. Kids were very interested in all matters.
Very interesting! The machine shop was my favorite. Employees are very knowledgeable and informative. They are also very friendly and helpful.
Love this place! Relaxing just to walk around but Science Saturdays are fun for the kids. Many things to see and do.
Membership is worth it. The walk is scenic and the employees who check you in are friendly.
Staff is so helpful. This place is majestic
Love that place. Especially walking around and learning about gunpowder and how it works. Berlin house restaurant food was deliciously.
Informative, interesting, beautiful area to see
Very knowledgeable guide. This is a very realistic view into the early days of industry in the US.
Really nice machinery demonstrations, the third floor of the museum has a discovery interactive section that's great for kids.
I highly recommend going to the Hagley Museum! Whether you are a history buff or a lover of nature it has a lot to offer.
This museum is a working exibit which brings to life the mill and workshop this is unique to other museums for parents this will keep your children's attention
A song of Water and Fire.
Yes, black powder factory driven by water wheel!
Excellent history and DuPont and the way they harnessed the energy of the Brandywine river to power a lot of mechanics

Great place for all ages. Truly a historic gem!
Our second time here. Love it and our tour guide/teacher Steve.

Fun and historical great for all ages, something for everyone. don't miss the powder mill walk along the Brandywine
Great museum with lots of information about Dupont family and history of Delaware.
A lovely museum to visit prior to taking a short bus ride to the DuPont mansion.
Passionate, knowledgeable tour guides and employees who really care about the history as well as greater context of the treasures here!
Fascinating place with wonderful tour guides. Bring friends and family, they'll thank you.
Beautiful area for walks along the river. Many interesting views and displays.
Love the demos and the guides are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the historic features.
We went and not a lot is open but there were still guides to tell us about the grounds.
Interesting tour of the house and gardens but not much else to see on the estate.
Go learn how the Dupont Company go started. My favored spot are the ruin gardens along the entrance road.
Beuatiful grounds nestled in Delaware. Excellent tours and historical information available.
Go during the summer, you see more. Tour is great but almost not worth the money off peak

Great place
Wonderful place
We brought our church youth group to see how things used to be made. How machines were water powered. How crankshafts turned belts that powered equipment. How gunpowder was made here that helped us win wars. The lovely old houses and beautiful gardens. Even saw a demonstration on how they used to test gun powder. Recommend a visit.
I enjoyed the demonstrations. However, if you didnt make an appointment earlier to see the interior houses, you are not able to. For the price, and only being able to see one small aspect of the area was disappointing. And the price was not adjusted for what was closed or available to the customer. I enjoyed what we saw but was disappointed that the price was not adjusted.
I love to go I always take food with my wife to eat outdoors..nice place.
I loved. Exhibition on Queen Elizabeth.
