Reviews of E. I. du Pont Home and Garden
We came kind of late, but the staff were all very welcoming. I enjoyed the tour alot. Some of the grounds are closed due to recent flooding, but still plenty to see! We had a tour guide in training for the house, but she was very knowledgeable and did a great job!!
Offers an overly rosy perspective on a corrupt family dynasty that has poisoned thousands of people on the east coast. That being said, it’s pretty interesting and the grounds are beautiful.
This is a great place to check out if you are into history. This is were the company DuPont was founded. Check out the website to see upcoming events. They tend to have a lot for young kids as well as adults during the week.
Beautiful grounds, tour guides are excellent.
Wonderful history and beauty to be seen here. Lots of information and lots of walking too. They do provide buses to pick you up and drop you at the different sites if you can't walk a long distance.
The tour guides were excellent. Very knowledgeable and pleasant. The home was decorated for Christmas and so beautifully done! We did, however, feel quite rushed to get on the shuttle for no apparent reason. That being said, we will definitely return and recommend this museum to friends.
I enjoyed walking about the property and was fascinated by the dangerous history. Loved to see how things were engineered to use the river and behind the scenes of things. The house was beautiful to look at, the docent was very informative.
Members of our photography club had a superb tour of the museum led by a very knowledgeable docent. A beautiful and educational place to spend a day!
There was so much history here! All of the tour guides were so knowledgable, and the sites were amazing!
Such a beautiful place. So much history. The tour guides know thier history. Loved loved
I really liked this place but I was fairly clueless as to their procedure. I purchased my ticket ahead of time online and I didn't really get any info in the email. It closes at 5, I arrived at 1:30. I was taking my sweet time, it said check in with an arrow to the right pointing to kiosk and entrance with an arrow to the left. There was no one at the kiosk so I went to the entrance, there was a man checking tickets but there's no service and I couldn't pull up my email and he said I guess I'll have to trust you. I was annoyed because I really purchased a ticket. So I asked if there's any Wifi on the premise and then he tells me no but you're supposed to check in at the store not the kiosk. So I walk to the store and ask them if they have WiFi and they say no, but I can tell you a part where you can stand to connect to WiFi? So they thought I couldn't connect to the WiFi so finally realized there is WiFi and I was able to connect and get my ticket but THEN I was told that the last shuttle bus to the house was about to leave (2 PM) I didn't know I had to take a bus to the main house, nor did I know the last bus was at 2, I would have arrived earlier. I get off the bus and a sweet guide starts to explain all the history of the estate and shows me the garden. I asked what the bus schedule is for going back (I didn't want any other surprises) she told me that they leave every 30, and the trip takes 10 min so the next bus would arrive to pick us up at 2:40 but I could explore more and walk around and the following bus would be 3:10 etc. So at 2:30 I finally reach the main house and begin taking photos, then I'm told the 2:40 bus is the last bus back to the parking lot 🤦🏽♀️ so all of this hassle and I only got to spend 10 minutes on the property! They just need to explain the process and schedule better! I would have skipped the history lesson (I didn't want to be rude) if I had to go back in 30 min!
Wonderful tour guides. Really knew the fun details to share.
Nice place! Very relaxing, lots of history. The staff are amazing.
A great experience. The docents were excellent!
Great tour of the house. Very interesting
Great tour guides. Everyone was helpful. Very informative. Thank you.
We didn't know whay were getting into. Just had time to do the house. So much information and so hard to keep track of who's who's. The tour became boring. There were cars but either we didn't find them or there were only a handful. Beatiful home though. Just need condensed verision.
Hour long tour of house and Gardens. Beautiful
We thoroughly enjoyed the Hagley museum and grounds. We did the guided tour of the home and also the powder mills / workshop. All of the staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We are planning on going back to see the antique car show that is coming up. Hope the weather will be nice.
Beautiful facility and gardens. It is party of the Hagley museum complex. It is well worth the visit to see the house and grounds. They also have a great car show once a year.
This was a wonderful visit. House(mansion) was amazing. Gardens were breath taking. Everything was absolutely beautiful and totally groomed, inside and out. Hard to believe it was just their "home."
We loved it here! Educational displays
The House, gardens, and gun powder facilities were all fascinating. I especially enjoyed when the guide showed how to use all the huge 1800s workshop equipment, which was still in working order, with the original power source!
We really enjoyed our visit. My young children really enjoyed it, too. Our tour guide in the house was knowledgeable and interesting and was able to keep our children's interest. The steam engine demonstration was really cool as well. We hope to come back when the powder mill reopens.
Had a blast, as always, at Hagley. We brought our not quite 2 year old son for the first time and he also had a great time. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Looking forward to many more trips there this year.
Will definitely return once everything is restored and opened completely. Super friendly staff and tour guides. I was not feeling my best but I enjoyed my time there.
This is part of the Hagley Museum property. This is one of the first DuPont homes, on the site of the original powderworks. Lots of great history, beautiful grounds and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. Great day trip for the family.
Incredibly beautiful place with wonderful staff and volunteers. I had to get a membership because I will be going back a lot.
Little piece of heaven on this beautiful property. Too bad the recent hurricane flooded parts of the tour.
Great tour. Amazing that so many original items have been preserved. Informative guides.
Phenomenal, Beautiful & Peaceful place in DE.. 🤓💯💯❤🙏✌
Perfect place 2 take the family & kids. …
Very good tour of the home and we're very impressed
So interesting, all the staff were so nice and were so knowledgeable.
Loved it. Lots to see. They did a good job of keeping it real. Tour staff did a great job.
Amazing to see a house like this so full of history. I really enjoyed seeing how the people lived back in the olden times of our Nation's beginnings.
Great place for some excellent history given by the great tour guides.
You can still get a great tour of the garden and the garage. House is closed temporarily due to covid. Still well worth a visit especially when weather is decent.
They had some great demonstrations and educational content while exploring retired gunpowder mill. One more thing i again never knew existed. Definitely worth a visit, especially once the house reopens after Covid19
Staff knows their stuff
So beautiful and rich in history. I highly recommend a tour.
Guides were very informative and demos were good. Waiting to go back once they open the buildings for tours again.
Beautiful home and expansive gardens. Great place to walk around and get a feel of how the DuPont family lived.
Beautiful home just wish we could see upstairs
Great place to visit. If your a local need to visit.
👍👍 We loved every minute! Super knowledgeable staff that are all so courteous! 💞 …
Programs are geared to children but the mansion tour is for adults. I would like to see more tours for adults. Walking tours as part of the property is only accessable by Jitney unless attending bike and hike event. It would be nice if the guides on that event could give more background about the property. The volunteers can not answer questions.
Definitely a go do, but go
when it's cool outside.
It was hot as Hades. Very interesting history of Dupont and the dynamite made before 1921.
Loved everything about this place. You definitely should visit.
Great tour and tour guides. Well worth it
Great museum. Definitely do both the gun powder demonstration, and the machine shop. Tour of the house is great. It is not very handicap accessable, being an old house and the ground require some walking on brick/gravel/cobblestone.
This is a absolutely great place to walk or run and to take the kids to learn something.
This is the first DuPont home in America. It's very elegant.
Magnificent grounds & buildings. Impressive mansion tour/ gardens/ millwright & gunpowder bldgs. Each docent was well versed and cordial.
Fantastically maintained historical site. Beautiful home and furnishings. Learn about the beginnings of industry and innovation in the US.
Amazing historical site loaded with interesting artifacts
Really good guides and an interesting place to go.
This is a wonderful place! Very historic and informative and interesting. I can't believe I lived in Delaware over 20 years before visiting. The annual car show is amazing with lots of rare cars!
Great tour of home and powder yard.
Love the history of the Hagley. All of the tour guides are very well prepared and interesting. The home looked beautiful for the holidays.
A very lovely and historic place.
Went on a Saturday that they were doing family events at the visitor center. We entered the house with three small children and were pleased to find out that they were not doing the normal one hour guided tour but rather they had tour guides in each room to tell us stories of the room. A handful of the guides were super sweet and told stories of the room just for the littles. It was so nice. They set up the home decorated for Christmas as well (since it was December when we visited) and it was so beautiful. There is a barn with a small Cooper shop, a room with a couple antique cars and another room with an old wagon and various carriages.
Friendly staff at visitor's center and bus driver who gladly detours up to the parking lot on the return trip! Guide was very knowledgeable about family & Mansion's history. Lovely time and learned a great deal about living in Wilmington during that time period!
Great house. Guide was very knowledgeable
Beautiful and serene area. Also steeped in history.
Unfortunate to not have been able to go inside.
Entire Hagley experience is fantastic. Grounds are great! Guides are enthusiastic. Walks by the Brandywine are lovely.
A wonderful place to spend the day.
Fascinating tour if you like history. It is the place where the DuPonts started their fortune. It has their first home before the crazy big palace type mansions. It also has the powder mill that made black powder for guns and blasting and other munitions. There is enough to see, you can easily spend the day there. It has demonstrations in the machine shop of the various tools they used to make equipment.
Excellent tour of an historic property. Recommended before going to Winterthur, as a means to have contextual information about the DuPont family.
Great place for a walk in the park.
great experience learning about the life of a great business empire.
It was quiet an natural place to visit.
Gorgeous place to spend the day!
You learn so much of the 18th century
The annual fireworks are incredible. What an amazing experience.
The Hagley Powder Works are the most interesting thing to see, with great interpreters ready to talk about the industrial revolution, using water power, and black powder. The house is closed due to Covid, barn has some interesting things like an authentic Conestoga wagon. Otherwise, stick to the riverfront
Interesting place to see history
