What a great museum and coection of railroad memorabilia and trains! There are locomotives, baggage cars and cabooses to climb on, go in, and to explore! The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, and you can certainly learn much from them. A lot of fun for all!

I have been a Wichita resident all my life (a crisp 20 years now) and I'd always seen this museum, ATSF 3768 and the Santa Fe diesel on the Douglas St. Bridge. I'd only been to this museum once in memory.
Recently, I went back this last week.
What I can say is this little museum is heavily underrated and deserves more attention.
Tickets are only 7 dollars for an adult.
Right now, the museum needs about 30,000 dollars to pay for a new paint job on the diesel, else likely she'll rust away.
Please visit here and say hi to these nice folks. They convinced me, on my first visit after 10 years, to volunteer with restoration projects. Highly recommend visiting.

Nice museum but GPS had tuff time finding entrance that is XC from union station

Fun place to explore when the weather's nice ~ especially if bar hopping in Old Town 🌻

Such a fun experience. Walk upstairs to go outside and see the trains. Mini museum area upstairs, gift shop downstairs. All the staff are volunteers and were very nice.

I have heard of the Transportation Museum but had never went even though I'm a life long Wichitan. I was very pleasantly surprised! There are steam engines and a ton of cabooses that you are allowed to go in. The people who work there are very pleasantly and informed about their trains. You can tell they LOVE their job! There is even a WWII train section. It's a great location, fairly priced, and a gem to the Wichita community. My kids loved it and want to go back! I would highly recommend the Great Plains Transportation Museum. The view is also great!

This place is AWESOME! My family came here when they collaborated with the Toy Train Museum. I worried my son wouldn't have that much fun. He is a little younger than 3. My worry was unfounded!!! Myblittle boy had a BLAST. He loved looking at all the trains and train cars and he couldn't get enough of being inside them. We will kost definitely be going back!
Finding parking was a bit difficult, but other than that everything was great!
Our tour guides were delightful. The gentlemen was so full of info and the older lady was just fun to talk to as she told us stories of her husband who had passed away but was a huge train enthusiast.
It was an outting I know my son will not soon forget and neither will I or my husband!
If you or your kid love trains this is the perfect place to go.

Very nice gentlemen running the place, they offered our group a tour and it was a great time. They were funny, positive and very informative, it just felt like you were talking to your family so they were very welcoming. There are also actual trains that you are able to walk through, very cool and neat!

Museum is small for the price you pay to get in. But it’s worth it, staff is very knowledgeable

If you have a love of trains and want to talk this is a great place to see. The docent was very knowledgeable about the 150 year history of not only Wichita but trains in the US.
Kids will love the opportunity to get into a cab of the locomotives and cars they have on site.
Emil Cepeda
Absolutely wonderful find during my weekend in Wichita. The staff were all very friendly, the fee was nominal for adults, and the amount of space that was accessible to me was amazing!
Nathan Johnson
It's a pretty cool place. They have options for birthday parties on a caboose and we're thinking of doing that for our child.
Peter Hoogeveen
Really cool place. The gentlemen working there were very friendly and had lots of knowledge of the trains.
Eli Rueda-Vega
The staff was very friendly and being Hands-On with the train was amazing I totally recommend it

I've been to a lot of train museums but never one where the train was parked on a bridge right next to the museum. It's a shame they don't have a bigger budget because my granddaughter will probably never see a working steam train. I would just recommend this to anyone young or old for the fact that this part of our society and History is going away very fast. I would highly recommend. I hope someone can donate enough money to ensure that they can stay open and profitable.

The staff really make this so much better. They are so knowledgeable , funny and will give you lots of interesting wichita and train history. Make sure you ask them some questions. They have some hands on train cars that you can climb on. One that is really massive. The outside exhibit is hands on. Great for school aged kids through adults. Younger children would need a lot of supervision. There are stairs, elevator and (outside) uneven surfaces.. Everyone should go at least once.

A great local place to visit. Very affordable and informative. The people working there are very friendly and knowledgeable about trains and transportation. Good place to take the kids also.
Aaron Dashiell
The beauty of this museum is in its simplicity. There's aren't a whole lot of trains there, but it cost next to nothing and the kids would be content playing for hours (even though the adults won't). I loved that it was literally about 30 feet from the railroad track with a train going by at least once an hour.
Also a great place for a toddler's birthday party. the kids love the caboose.
Jeremy Jedlicka
Small but alots to see and an awesome experience for train lovers
Gabriel's Railway Adventures
My train loving 6 year old absolutely loved it! The volunteer who was working was so helpful and full of information about the museum and trains in general. I learned quite a bit myself and my son had so much fun interacting with the exhibits and watching trains go by.

Went for railfest 2021, one of the best events I’ve been to.

If you judge a museum by the quality of the exhibits and staff, it is top notch!Entirely run and staffed by volunteers, the museum has quality exhibits (ok, its hard to go wrong with large steam engines, but there is so much more), an attitude that makes you feel like family as you walk in the door and decades of knowledge available to be absorbed. Very limited hours, a factor of the all-volunteer operation and even more limited budget. Well worth a visit, whether you go for an hour or five. $7 for adults was a bargain.

If you like trains like I do then this place is a must visit. There are all kinds of locomotives and train cars on display. Many of these you can have an actual "hands on" experience with. It allows you to see how much and yet how little the equipment and technology has changed over the years. The guides were very interesting and informative. There are many pictures and maps on display inside as well. Great place to visit.

A beautiful place in the heart of my favorite city. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The place is clean and well kept. Perfect for anyone who loves trains or just being outside on nice days. I went there frequently as a kid and I volunteer there sometimes with my brother. Check it out if you're in town!

The museum was so much fun and very educational! My oldest son loves trains and I never slowed down to think about our rich history involving trains and how busy downtown Wichita was when trains were running in and out. This is apart of Wuchitas history that deserves our support.
Matthew Z
One of the coolest places that i didn't knew existed. Got to climb on lots of trains and knowledgeable staff walked us through the exhibits. The gift shop is mostly donations which allows for great prices and all of the proceeds go to the museum.
Korbin Arrington
Love this place! Been here so many times but never gets old!
Bubba Allen
It was really cool to see this. I really enjoyed this visit. I love trains. Not a very big exhibit but worth going to see. 7.00 for adults. And you get to keep the pen.
Liza
This place is incredible. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. We love being able to see and sit in the train compartments. It is a great place to go with the kids or for a fun stroll.

Low cost, lots of fun for the kids not too crowded
Robert Gatton
I love this place! I've been part of it for 30 plus years. Lots of trains and history of railroading in Wichita and Kansas. Highly recommended to this museum to anyone with children and people with an interest in trains.
Micheline Turner
For train lovers it's a must. Your kids will love the hands on experience. The A.T. & S.F. #3768 is a favorite. Don't forget to ring the bell!!!

I passed gas in the gift shop and was asked to leave. When I refused, I had inadvertently passed flatulence again at which point I left after apologizing. I had upset a Laotian man who was throwing pamplets at me. All in all, it's a great place. I shouldn't have passed gas.
Jennifer Clough
My niece's birthday. An amazing venue!!
John McDowell
the engines and cabooses are great... I just wish they had a passenger car, dining car and a club car for children go walk thru.. back when trains were the main mode of travel these cars were very elegant you don't see that anymore.. which is a shame..
Oklahoma and Texas have an agreement for passenger rail service. Kansas has yet to jump on the bandwagon.. I for one with my G-daughter would ride the train down to TX. for something different to do on a weekend..
Nick Coblentz
What a great place! I love that our kids could actual climb inside the trains!
C Smith
If you love trains this is a definite must stop in Wichita. The collection of rolling stock is small, but you can actually go inside a few of the pieces. The GPTM has a neat collection of memorabilia and was a neat place to spend a few hours. Next to the station you can watch the trains of the BNSF, SKOL, and UP.
Jana Auchterlonie
Great place to take the kids. Bob was a great tour guide! Learned some about trains, but wear a jacket if it is cool out!

Fun and BNSF transcn is right next to it. Big trains all the time we was there running by. The kids love the engineer whistling and waving.
Joe Hawkins
Fun place for kids. Open access to old train engines and cars. Kids get to climb and explore. They didn't want to leave!
