Reviews of The Museum at FIT

I will say it’s kind of limited now since it seems their main gallery is closed, and security didn’t seem to know when it would be reopened. But it’s all free, so can’t complain too much.
But the exhibitions they had were still nice to look at, one focusing on prominent female designers, the other on designer shoes, which certainly had some interesting items.
There’s also some sort of gallery next door that seems to be showcasing current student’s work, which was all quite interesting, especially since there’s no real barriers, so you can get up close and personal, admiring the detail in their designs.
Will certainly return in the future whenever I’m in town, as I assume they rotate exhibits quite regularly.

The Fashion Institute of Technology public space is split in to 2 sections. There is a museum at the Goodman Center and across the street, there is an Art and Design Gallery at the Pomerantz Center Main Lobby.
The Art and Design Gallery features art pieces from students that are graduating or close to graduation. These show a very modern take on the world of Art and I highly recommend. It's like going in to the contemporary art museum and seeing the cutting edge of what students today are thinking. Very unique and beautiful pieces.
On the flip side the museum instead showcases the history of fashion throughout the years. This is a dimly lit space that makes picking out find colors and detail very difficult.
Both are definitely worth a visit considering they're both FREE.

Always come back for more inspiration. The FIT Museum is a place where you can get inspired if you are a creative person; it also contains lots of information about our history if you are interested in learning and exploring. This small museum has two floors, the main floor is usually vintage collections, and the basement is usually where extensive Designer exhibits are.
The museum entrance is free, and it is always quiet and not crowded. They always have great presentations, and the staff is very respectful. Please ask before taking pictures as in some exhibits it is not allowed.

One of the best hidden fashion museum secrets in NYC. Please check the program and go to whatever the exhibition is on. Won’t regret it. I’ve been to various of the best I’ve seen. Amazing pieces displayed. And best of all is Free!!!

I attended the Fresh Fly Fabulous 50yrs of Hip Hop Style exhibit. AMAZING and very well curated!!! Will definitely go again! Describing this exhibit in words is an understatement. Just go and support Black fashion!

This is a very small museum but worth a visit, especially since it is free and takes around 30 minutes to explore. Two galleries were open. One was a student sketch exhibit and the other was a comparison of fashion designers Dior and Balenciaga with vintage clothing and information on each. As of 7/24/22 they do require masks for entry but do not have any to share, so bring your own. We saw that one of the galleries was closed.

Visited during my last day in NYC last week. They had three small but nice exhibits: Fashion of the 1990s, Head to Toe, and Asian Americans in New York Fashion. I wish the Asian American exhibit was more comprehensive but it still has the ability to provoke conversation and has some beautiful pieces at the end of the hallway.
Also allow time to check out the chalk drawings on the outside of the building done by Illustration students.

Yes you have to wear a mask at this museum get over it.
It was a fab exhibition, would definitely recommend going.
This is just a few of the pictures I took.

Two intetesting exhibits. Beautiful outfits from Dior and Balenciaga. You could compare outfits between them. And wonderful shoes from all the best designers in the world! It is like a fairy tale you are in. Some shoes are from 18 century. And they still look good! Also it has the whole section of sneakers from famous designers. Also there are baby shoes. You just cant get enough of that exhibit.

What a cool and under the radar museum! It's a perfect size that won't overwhelm you. The summer 2022 exhibit comparing Dior and Balenciaga is wonderful.
