Reviews of Washington Monument
Soph Meldrum
Really cool spot worth a visit. Elevator ride up and down gives you a quick history lesson which then continues throughout the visit as there are plaques with information and the workers are always happy to answer any questions. It wasn't too crowded which was really nice as well. Only thing is to be prepared to wait outside before being able to enter. Definitely book in advance. Security checks also required upon entry.

This monument is impressive and amazing to visit the grounds are really clean, a lot security around.
Great place to walk around, ride a bike, relax, take pictures and/or have lunch from the food trucks.
The structure is magnificent piece of Art, the monument is more beautiful in person, I definitely recommend it to anyone.
The Washington Monument is an obelisk within the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (1775–1784) in the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States (1789–1797).

Wonderful structure so tall that I can see it from our flight. Central attraction of the mall. You can take the some awesome view of surroundings from the top. But you have to get the tickets 30 days before. One days advance tickets are very rarely available. So try for the 1 month before tickets those are easy to get. Public restrooms is near by.

I would say the Washington Monument is a cool piece of architecture and an important part of the US history. However, I personally do not like its look, and I don't think it fits into the DC. I have seen the original plans for its final look, and they were so much better and more beautiful.
I definitely recommend taking a tour to the top of the Monument, it is a must see. The views are beautiful, and there are nice historical exhibitions. Book the tour in advance if you can. If not, please arrive EARLY to buy same-day tickets. Selling starts 8:45, make sure to be there an hour before that. Otherwise good look. It is worth.
Zoe Ryan
Be sure to buy tickets 30 days in advance, only $1 to reserve. I was there a little early and as it was quite they let us in, you go through security and then up the lift, you arrive to the top floor to look a views, then Go downstairs to a small museum, then on the way down the lift it slows to show you old stones that were gifted during it’s construction.
Would highly recommend

Beautiful piece of American history!
Great place to walk around and relax!
Tons of museums are walkable distance from the Washington monument. You can easily send the entire day just to cover things around the monument.
Would recommend good walking shoes and breathable clothes if you plan to visit on a warm day!
Aubrey Malone
Awesome! Make sure you take a visit to the top, you can see EVERYTHING from there. The view is amazing! You can book a day or two ahead of time, or show up in the morning of the day you want to go around 9AM. Tickets are free. We didn't know you could go up there, and it ended up being one of the main highlights of our trip to DC!

This Monument is way bigger in actual than expected. Amazing place to visit in DC and mark it in your wish list. I visited during Cherry Blossom 🌸 festival and enjoyed kite festival as well. Couldn’t go at the top as it needs to have tickets in advanced. This is located in between Capitol and Lincoln Memorial. Flags around the monument make it more beautiful. Just visit, enjoy and make memories.

Awesome experience. The outside is striking but make sure to get tickets to go to the top. The view is great, even on a cloudy day. Get tickets early, they’re free, because spots fill up fast. Going offseason is a great idea… no wait.
Callie Greenshields
Our visit to the Washington Monument was a highlight of our visit here in DC. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable be sure to ask them lots of questions. We asked one while in the gallery to share some history and he showed us the Crack (now fixed) that happened when an earthquake hit the DC area in 2011. We had hoped to take the stairs down from the top, but since the 2011 quake the stairs are now only used for emergencies. The views from the top are spectacular. Line up early to get your free tickets or order them online.
Makenna Gott
You can go to the top for free!! You have to reserve tickets the day before (you can't do it earlier), make an account first because tickets "sell out" in literally a minute, so you have to be quick. If you do get tickets, it's definitely worth it (bc its free). Otherwise the view is still amazing from standing on the ground!
Ryan
The day we went was a bit of a bad day, but I assume the view would be amazing on a better day. I’m glad they reopened the elevator to the top, because they have an interesting little museum up there too. It surprised me when I approached it in-person, it’s much bigger when you’re up close. I had previously only seen it from afar or online.
John Myers
Dude, so good! Been a long time since I went to the top. Well worth it. Kind of exciting. Get tix at recreation.gov. look at least a few days ahead. Right now only 6 tickets at a time. Great place to make memories.
Ruchi's Little World
The Washington Monument is a sleek and tall (555ft) building in Washington, D.C. which can be noticeably visible from any place/point nearby.. I saw it from US capital building which is far from this... built to show respect for George Washington, the first President of the United States. surrounding by US flags... green lawns... which make its beauty even more beautiful..great for walk, biking..from front of this US Capital Building is visible and from back of it.. Lincoln memorial is visible.. and the one side white house is situated!!..which makes it a perfect spot for the photography too....but i loved the green surrounding very much..

This icon is a beacon from most any central spot in DC, and every view of it is stunning. Best views are from the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. Such a special building. Make sure to read about its history on the plaques posted nearby on The Mall.

I think it’s $1 to go up to the top. Buy in advance online. Very nice view from the observation deck. One thing about dc in general is that the staff of lots of place are somewhat curt. I don’t think it’s rude necessarily but it’s not particularly nice either. Coming from the west coast, it might just be a regional difference. Security here is TIGHT. Follow all recommendations.
shriti jaiswal
Love the cleanliness around the monument. Park is the best part. Don’t miss a moment to sit in the park at night and gaze at the beauty and vibe of the place. The simplicity of this monument is impressive. You need to book ticket in advance if you want to go to the top of the tower. Plan either to book 30 days advance online or 24 hr before at 8:30am in the morning - ticket is free but you still need to get one.
William Bastemeyer
Went here with the Family, o boy did we have a great time! This is a must see place.
On every corner there were water boys selling water wit different prices.
The monument and scenery were great.
Shelley Pence Van Noy
The highlight of our trip to DC! Reserve your tickets 30 days in advance to ride up to the top of the monument and see the view from the observation deck. Tickets can be reserved 30 days to the day. Want to go July 1st then be online June 1st. The views are amazing!!
Kristen Alger
You need to get tickets online. When I went to DC they were not giving tickets out. You had to get them online and they were NOT available for that day. Meaning...if you want to go, get your tickets online and in advance. Since this is new (Covid), I went through security alone, went up the elevator with 5 people and we were the only ones at the top! Great views! Plan ahead and ENJOY!
Irina Coombes
Weeeellll….I told the security guard I wasn’t happy they didn’t clean the windows for better visibility. Just kidding 😂
I went inside and it was pretty cool to get a Birdseye view of Washington DC. The security guard that takes you up and kind of keeps an eye on the place was very informative and knowledgeable about history and give me some recommendations of places to visit. Had a great chat with him.
AmbeRR
Absolutely loved this! The outside is amazing but getting a ticket to tour the inside is breath taking. Best to get them 30 days in advance, as trying to get tickets the day before is really hard. Not impossible, as that is what we lucked out on. But would highly recommend getting 30 days in advance. Since it is worth the views.
Brian Gutierrez
It's hard sometimes to put into words how something can make you feel. An object shouldn't have the ability to change the way you feel but that is exactly what the Washington Monument does. When you see it from far away you have some understanding of what you are walking towards but it's not till you are front and center that you get a full overwhelming appreciation for what is before you. Someone built this and they meant to build something that would stand tall for decades to come. And here we are all these years later and it's doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Makes us proud to be Americans. Set the standard for our ability and focus. Give hope and bring renewed faith to those who believe. Please take a moment to stop by.

Beautiful big gardens all around with lots of monuments just a walking distance away .. it's hard to find parking on weekends especially if u reach here after 10:00 am. We enjoyed the kite flying show here a lot.
Jeff O
Get your tickets ahead of time before your visit. It's really amazing in person prepare yourself. Going up to the top you'll get some truly amazing pictures.
Glory Castillo
First off, there will be lots of walking around so make sure to wear a comfortable pair of sneakers. Theres vast areas to stroll and we opted to rent a scooter to get around.
If you want to access the top of the monument you must purchase tickets in advance. Unfortunately I didn't have this information and we missed going up.
Luke Meyers
A trip up the elevator, worth the pre-ticket. You might have to wait and schedule this visit out. Lots of history in the walls and in the bricks. From the orientation down below to the ride up to the top. The views are just right and spectacular. Heights a problem, but the structure is sturdy. Go with friends or family and make a memory.
Karin E
Great experience to view the city from the top. The staff were very nice and helpful.
There is a tiny museum you can visit after checking the top. We have views of four wings of the city, north, south, east and west.
Reserve your tickets online ahead of time.
Mendy Henderson
If you are flying in from I know the south. You can sit on the left side of the plane and see everything. Like the Lincoln Memorial. Washington Memorial. The white house and so much more. I really enjoyed myself here.
Moving on with Old Man River Old man river
This is the second time I went to the top of the Washington Monument. The first time I could climb the stairs to the top. They quit that around 1980. The views from the top are picture worthy. The best way to get them online at recreation. Gov and reserve a time. It costs 1.00 per ticket. Or you can hope to get a free ticket if you get there at 8:30 in the morning. Best time for me is in the winter off season as not long crowd then.
Andrew Sternke
We visited around 5PM. Perfect time for outdoor visit - (we weren’t interested in going to the top). We then walked the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial! It was an amazing experience!
Ashok Patel
This 555 ft marble monument was built to honor the first President of USA, George Washington. The political and military leadership of George Washington was indispensable. This is built in the shape of Egyptian obelisk.
This was the tallest building in the world when it was completed. It is still world’s tallest stone structure. You need a timed ticket of an elevator for the observation deck at 500 ft to get a bird’s eye view of the capital. You have to go through the security screening.
The Washington Monument is located near the west end of the National Mall, with spectacular views of the National Mall and other important memorials. This Monument has been the witness to the history that shaped our nation.
Must visit if you are in Washington DC and if you can manage to get the ticket.
Kody B
Great place to visit and to take the tour up to the top. As of 2022 you need to reserve your spot at least 1 day in advance at 10a and choose a time. $1 per person non refundable. The staff was friendly. Worth the visit if you have the time.
Jahyun Kim
Washington Monument is located in the middle between Lincoln Memorial and US Capitol. It is the highest object in Washington D.C. If you buy a ticket you can go up to the top of Monument. You need to book for it through on line before you visit. It was a cold and windy day when I visited. The ticket was sold out and I was not able to go up to the top. You can see and take photos the great scenery of Lincoln Memorial and US Caption from there.
Riley
The view from the top is breathtaking. To get tickets you can go online or get there very early as they go very quick. The two tone color of the Washington Monument is very cool to see in person. The size is extremely hard to fathom standing at the base and looking up. The view across the mall and seeing the reflection in the reflection pond is very cool. It is impossible to come to DC and miss seeing it. Standing at the tippy top you can see the capital, white house, Lincoln memorial, and many other beautiful sights.
JoViBi
Great place to visit and was surprised at how big it is! Lovely area and on my final day in USA watched the 4th July fireworks from here. Was such an amazing thing to witness with my bf since we travelled from the UK to be there. Would defintely return and revisit it as I nicknamed it 'the big stick' 🤣🤣😅😅 …
Isaac Gould
A real piece of history!! Stopped here on my trip to DC where I visited several of these national monuments. If you want to see my other reviews of the other monuments feel free. Despite what some have heard you cannot go to the top, but it is extremely accessible and from the base you can see all the way to the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials as well as the White House!
Amy B
This was much bigger than I ever expected! It was amazing to see this monument. We did our own tour and used the lime electric scooters and our phones to go around and see every monument. It was a blast!
A. A.
Must visit. I wish they have more tickets and staff provide more info and guidance. Of course some are extremely good but some just don’t show that they care. Nevertheless, it is a precious experience to feel all this history
Victor Shing
Took 2 tries to get tickets. First time I showed up at 8:20am, and waited 50 minutes to see last ticket given to 20 people ahead of me. 2nd attempt, I showed up at 8am, and was one of last group to get tickets. Recommend you show up really early. You can request 6 tickets per person I think.
Chris
The online ticketing system does not work whatsoever but we were able to get same day tickets by waiting in line at 7 am. It was very cool seeing all of the history within the monument, and the views at the top are unparalleled in DC.
China Reese
Didn't get to go up in the elevator due to time restrictions but the view from the outside is spectacular. Like everything else in DC, I was taken aback by all of the architectural beauty and immensity in our nation's capital. Being able to see a representation of our nation's pride and joy brought a tear to my eye. 10/10
Ian Bozung
I was never able to get tickets to go (it is wickedly difficult in the June tourist season) but from the outside, it looks fantastic! It's much bigger than I thought and you can see it from practically anywhere in DC. Overall very beautiful.
Jeff Tong
Book two weeks ahead of time for tickets. The check in process is smooth, the staff are nice and friendly, the inside of the Washington Monument is clean, and the views are free!! Minus the $1 online fee. Just keep in mind that there's no bathroom here ;)
Michelle Cleveland
Beautiful day and a great 5 mile walk! There are bikes to rent. Little ones should be in stroller. Great experience.
Jose Ortega
Wow, Wow, Woow. I had seen this monument in many pictures but to see it in person was amazing. It was huge and so much bigger then I thought it would be. Everyone should come at least once. Come early because it gets pretty busy. so many great views from the top.
mrc kirati
This historic monument area is very peaceful. I recommend this place to visit once you are near by. I enjoy sitting on the base of this amazing monument.
bruce
Beautiful monument with knockout views, very knowledgeable and friendly park staff but be prepared to be treated like a prisoner by the security which are not very friendly they may need some training on how to work with people! But once your done with them, it's worth the trip to the top.
Samuel Hozan
The Washington Monument looks spectacular, even at night 🌙 Check it out if you're in the Washington DC area. So much to see 👀 and so little time. You need at least 7 days in DC to see the top attractions. Nevertheless, I had the opportunity to see quite a few monuments, memorials and museums 😎😎😎
I like that everything is close by and within walking distance from Capitol Hill and the White House. Lots of awesome attractions. DC is definitely one of the coolest places to visit. I'll eventually come back if I get the chance in the future.
Armando Disla
It is fantastic to see and observe the wonder that this monument can offer. Since we arrived, we were amazed with all the perfection that exists around this monument and its emblematic distance. Really highly recommended, I would go 1000 times more and enjoy said majesty.
G Oulee
Worth the crazy booking online, tickets are gone within minutes of opening at 10am!
Stunning views at the top with informative rangers, fun videos in the elevator and we got to see the inside of the tower on our way down
Gaddie G
beautiful place, it really has a beautiful majestic view, from which you can see the Capitol and the White House... it is more beautiful than you can imagine... we had a great time, I was really delighted to continue visiting this place and more parts from Washington D.C. recommended for all types of people and ages.
Abdulkarim ALZarouni
Built to Honor George Washington, the United States First President. the The 555-Foot Marble Obelisk Tower Was the Tallest Building in the World. Located at the Center of the Nation's Capital. the Structure Was Completed in Two Phases of Construction, One Private (1848-1854)
& One Public (1876-1884). Built in the Shape of an Egyptian Obelisk. Evoking the Timelessness of Ancient Civilizations.
Yilin K
Tickets are not free lol 😂
Unless u came early in the morning and get one, otherwise $1 for admission.
Buy ticket in advanced please ! You wont be able to buy it right away!

Pictures do this amazing monument no justice. It towers majestically allowing it too be viewed from many angles, but standing right next too it leaves you in awe. We visited over the 4th of July, and the fireworks were icing on the cake.
BluJay
Never thought I'd be able to go up in the monument! It is definitely worth trying to do. It's really quick but awesome.

The refurbishment is great and the staff is so friendly. We had a wonderful experience! Strongly recommend—it’s a must see for your visit to Washington DC!
c roy
Had an amazing time at the washington Monument a while back. Was a snowy day witch made it amazing having the place to my self basically while enjoying all the views and was able to get some amazing photos on that day. Wish i could do it again or had a better camera besides my phone that day.
Senthil Palanisamy
Feels wonderful to be there at Washington Monument located at DC. I have learned from wikipedia that it is wide spread like 106 acres and height of this Monument is close to 169 meters / 555 feet. Also heard it was the tallest stone structure in 18th century which was later taken over by Eiffel tower. It is made of marble and granite. I didn’t get chance to take a look inside, one of the other tourist said inside it has iron staircase and a elevator. I visited during spring time on a awesome weather day. Pleasant walk and the breeze from all directions gave us a very good feel. We enjoyed taking pictures and chitchatting. Vault parking helps.
Thaveesha C
It's a beautiful structure with an equally impressive architecture. It's tall (very tall!) and one can only grasp its magnitude by visiting up and close.
You can get great views of it from the national mall and would love to go inside on our next visit!
Rebecca Francis
My third trip up in 20 years.... more memorable (no rugrats to cater to 😏) If the forecasted weather on the day you want to go up is beautiful, go cue for tickets as early as possible! The ticket booth is at the bottom of the hill, where the bathrooms are - NOT at the bottom of the monument itself! …
Christine Wilson
The view from the top was worth it! Have your camera ready when you are coming down the elevator, they slow the elevator and “unfrost” the windows briefly so you can see the plaques on the inside of the monument.
Abolfazl Karimpour
Its a must to see place in DC. Make sure to get tickets in advance, $1 for each person and you get to go up with elevator! Great tour guy! You will get to see DC from the highest building in the town!
Shine Thomas
One of the many attractions to see in Washington DC. This stretch is something i like to go back again and again. One could seee the national monument war memorial Korean war memorial, Whitehouse etc around this park Lincoln memorial statue reflecting pool and jefferson memorial are few other major attractions around this place.and the good thing is all of these are located with in walkable distance. And could cover all these with less than half a day.
Paula Harguindey
We went all the way up to the top, the view is great. Definitely worth it, specially considering that it only cost us 2 dollars for the both of us. Also the staff was really friendly and polite. We forgot one of our backpacks at the entrance and they made sure we didn’t leave without it.
Thor
The experience here is awesome, the rangers are full of knowledge and share it well. The process to get in is a little slow but given the constraints here that's understandable. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the bathrooms are in serious need of cleaning and repair
Gary Jelks
Tickets are near impossible to get but the beauty of the site is amazing
You can see this structure from anywhere in DC.
Kelvin Ofula
Monumental. Probably one of the most famous monuments in the world, a symbol of a America and Washington DC. Very touristic. Get tickets to go to the top for the full experience.
C Sherman
The Washington monument is a must visit place on the national mall. Even if you do not have timed to tickets (which are required) to actually enter the memorial and visit the top, it is still worth stopping. The view from this location is wonderful.
Walking around the base of the monument, one can see the White House, the Lincoln memorial, the Jefferson memorial, and the capital, as well as the World War II memorial.
吴锐恒(Ruiheng Edbalt Wu)
You have to buy the ticket in advance. Did not go to the top but the view on the ground is also really good.
Carlos Millan
Almost every single place in Washington DC is worth visiting but perhaps one of great symbols and always nice to walk around, are the National Mall and the Washington Monument which happens to be this amazing obelisk, which at this time is the highest in the world and at the time it was built, the highest man made structure, which was then replaced by the Eiffel Tower, 5 years later.
Beth Cummings
I was able to get tickets to go to the top. It was absolutely beautiful! Highly recommend if you can get tickets.
Serik Suieu
Historic place and beautiful park. And if anyone wants to touch the history of America, I recommend visiting the memorial.
Kalpesh Patil
If you want to visit DC, a monument is a must visit. Try to book tickets prior to visit for a monument if you want to see the view from the top of the monument. The spring season is what I find the best time to visit as we can have colorful surroundings. Many nearby museums can be covered.
Phillip Lewis
A sight to see. Beautiful obelisk dedicated to one of the founding fathers of America. Great running location with history. Take the family or a group and visit this must see location in Washington DC. Great for picnics as well. Enjoy.
Benjamin Contreras
Impressive piece of history. Lots of walking and lots if pictures. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
vignesh s
Best time to visit the monument is around the cherry blossom festival along with the kite festival. Check the dates on Google and be prepared to deal with a magnanimous crowd as well.

My family took a wonderful day trip from Williamsburg, VA to Washington DC; to show our daughters our Nation's Capital. I also took advantage of our trip to take pix with my favorite book! From the rows of beautifully colored Tulips, to the Monument in the palm of my hand, to MLK's gaint rock memorial and the lovely gift of friendship displayed in the Cherry Trees. There are tons of places to visit and plenty of activities to experience. It's living, breathing History. Enjoy!
Tom Murphy
Some incredible views from around and on top of the Washington Monument. Highly recommend visiting!
Ron Carr
We took the chance that we’d get walk up tickets on a cold Sunday morning. We got there about 30 minutes early and got 9 am tickets, waited about 15 minutes to get through security, then up we went. Totally worth it but try to do online so you don’t waste your time. We just got lucky. Quite a few in line didn’t.
Tanmay Kshirsagar
The Washington Monument is a great place to go in the early morning and at night. There are many people till late at night at least on weekends. So, you can come with your family and friends without any worries. You can also ride your e-bikes, bicyles here, so that's a plus. Overall, a good place to pass time with your loves ones!
Justin Bivens
Had no idea you could see the inside so if you want to make so the you plan ahead to get your tickets, but the national forest man I talked to was great he told me all about the monument and answered all my questions
Maciej Winnicki
Amazing that's what i can say it. Highly recommended however people on the wheelchairs will have a bit problem to get there and see anything.
Pramod K
Best place to visit in Washington near White house. Many places at walking distance Refer map shared.
Remember food truck here are expensive i paid 6$ for coffee, 18$ for Chicken breast Burger with french fries.
Kent Zheng
Absolutely Fantastic views of DC from the top. Waiting for the elevator 🛗 took a too long time… …
Yadira Soto
Amazing and impressive is you can stay here, for enter to the Washington Monumet is 1.00 you can buy only with 30 days before, they sale a limited spots online and in person sell early some tickets if you have lucky.
Quentin Smith
Amazing place to visit Lots of things to see had a great time
Sue Longson
It is truly spectacular! You need to get tickets ahead of time right now. It is absolutely worth the trip!
Abigail Morales
The Washington Monument is a beautiful structure right in between the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian museums. Be sure to make free reservations ahead of time if you'd like to go up into the monument. It is fairly hard to get them the day of because they go quickly. The photos are views from atop the monument in September. I haven't been to the monument since I was a child about 10 years old. It was such a beautiful view 16 years later as an adult. The size surpasses anything in the Washington DC area, the way the sun hits it in the afternoon and the overall history of the are will blow you away.
James Spicer
Can be a little tough to get tickets but its worth showing up or logging on to get some. The views are amazing from the top and unlike anything else you will see anywhere in the city.
Victor Nava
Excellent view great services. One advice buy the tickets before with anticipation and arrive there 30 minutes arley.
s b
Best friendly staffs. Had a wonderful bday experience in this tour .
J Z
You cannot say you have been to DC without stopping by this place. Reservation is needed to get on top of the monument.
M R (Pebbles)
The tickets and the wait were a bit chaotic, but once you go in it's an amazing experience.
Mya Malone
Very pretty and peaceful to look at and learn about. You may also set up a tent to have a pinic
Imran khan
Very touristy. Pile of rocks neatly put on top of each other to make a tower. Very tall, though. You can park your car and look at it.
Rj Falses
This is a definite must-see if you're coming to Washington DC, as it's a historically significant site. You wonder how great the people before us were to be able to erect this great monument. According to the tour guide, the bottom part of the obelisk looks different from the upper part because of two types of rock used. In my opinion, October and November are the best months to visit. Also, I recommend packing lightly, bringing enough water, and securing your belongings during these times because it can get very crowded.
Kay Martz
I highly recommend this trip for the entire family , Spectacular view, nice places to visit a lot of monuments and beautiful views of the city and Potomac river, they need to hire more people for maintenance and janitors because then restrooms need frequent maintenance.
Md Nafiul Alam Nipu
View from the top was very beautiful. Needless to say a must visit place if you are in DC
Gianluca Milanesi
this place is massive, the park around is massive but unfortunately you have to reserve tickets in advance cause there is a limited number of them
Naveed Khan
A very cool places with beautiful views around ….
Tommy Tang
Amazing view from the top of the Washington Monument! Definitely 💯 worth to visit! …
Eugene Papkov
It's impressive. Wikipedia says that it is the "world's tallest predominantly stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk".
Ben Fowler
Really nice I did not have time to go to the top but was able to take some fantastic photos at sunset.
Guilherme Peruca
I wish i took the tour to go on the top. They were full, book before go. Also was sep 11 so they had flags from the victims. Never forget
val britt
Beautiful and historic monument, especially if you are able to acquire a ticket to enter the monument itself. First come first serve basis, so definitely recommend going before the 845 opening. Tickets are timed and provide you an opportunity to go up an elevator to the top (around 500 ft) and see the view of DC. Good facts and viewing windows.from the top as well as several staff to answer any questions or provide insight. There is also a small museum at 490 feet which is just 2 small flights down. Worth the wait or waking up early to have great views and an even better experience.
Kristína Lopatová
Impressive. Piece of American history. We had no tickets booked in advance. We queued up at at the entrance at 8:25 and vere lucky to get tickets for the 9 a.m. visit. Personnel was super polite, kind and smiling, giving out interesting details. I can not say the same about the security staff, very arrogant, no eye contact, I know they are there not to offer you coffee and cake but a decent smile would be appreciated.
Manal Ali
Haven’t visited the building closely yet but the fact that it’s visible from all around the national mall is amazing.
Sindu
This monument is built to honor George Washington, the United States' first president, it’s a 555-foot marble obelisk that towers over Washington, D.C.. Its a beautiful monument and well maintained.
I lived in the area for 4 years and this is one of my favorite spots.
The whole area is secured, clean and groomed well. You can come here to walk, run, bike, picnic, etc. there are other monuments close to it as well. It’s a lot more beautiful at night!
If you are in DC, you have to come here!
Neal Bernard
I went at 1 AM in the morning. Great shots at night.
Dalton Carney
Washington monument is always fantastic and is fun to stand at the base and look up cuz it seems like it's falling on you. Getting into the monument is a bit tricky because you have to reserve through the Recreation phone app and it's usually pretty booked for about the next 2 to 3 weeks out. The weight to get into the line isn't bad at all. If you have a reservation and security is not a big deal, but getting up to the top has incredible views of all of National Mall! Also it only cost $1.
Dez
This area is breathtaking. You’re able to ride a scooter with sidewalks and bathrooms along the way. There’s plenty of food trucks so grab some food and have a picnic.
Jaikishan Tekwani
The place gives a very positive vibe.. Refreshing and fills you with energy..
Silvia Martorell
Interesting views of the city. Worth the visit!
D P
An architectural monument to George Washington. A masonry obelisk to remind he was a mason.
Iriana Cruz
Great views of the city. Love coming here!
Tod Bowen
Iconic DC monument - there are beautiful views of the Washington Monument from many different spots in DC. I am particularly partial to the night views.
Williams Olmedo
Tip: reserve your tickets online to go to the observation deck. It will save you time.
Rrr
Beautiful view here, In the center of the National Mall, You need to book your tickets on the website one day in advance, Tickets are $1, Tickets available from 10:00am daily, It will soon be sold out. Here, you need to pass the security check, The elevator rises very fast, The highest point offers a very beautiful view, Washington DC is so beautiful!
David House
Very cool place to visit. There wasn't too many crowds and you could see the Capitol Building, the White House, and the Lincoln Memorial from the Washington Monument. if you're in the D.C. area you should check out this monument. Plus it's only a short walk from other cool things.
Audrey Friga
The monument was very pretty, I would recommend seeing the Washington Monument in the evening when the sun is setting to get the best views.
Clara Serrada
The area surrounding the monument makes it more special
Melissa Gautier
Beautiful architecture. A must see while in Washington.
Michael Copley
Went late at night and was able to get lots of photos without the crowds. Way bigger than it looks in pictures!
Arlette Camacho
Such a good experience , a must go place to visit
Nephi Richardson
The sheer size of the this monument is much more impressive in person. Wish I would have done my research and seen that you have to get there early to ride the elevator to the top. Definitely go check it out.
Patrick Welch
Looked pretty small, so wasn’t sure if it was real! Great photo opp!
Nick Schaer
One of the wonderful location of presence
Stacks A Million
Great atmosphere, perfect for a nice scenic walk
Christina (Kerr)
You will need to book ahead for touring (bought 30 days in advance), and there is a convenient fee $1 for booking.
Or you can check it out “in-person” 9am everyday for free ticket.
I will share the information along with this review.

Amazing work and interesting history behind it. So many views of it.
Melissa Amonette
Park rangers were a mixed bag. Young female ranger inside was very friendly, young guy outside was rude. Security at the gate was the stereotypical prison guard type, always rude. Why are there vault doors bigger than a banks to get in? Felt like a prison. Tickets were almost impossible to get. We got lucky. I grabbed them online the day before at 8:30 am sharp. Not free. But only $1 each.
M. Patterson
It's such a beautiful sight to see.
Jainif Marediya
History is great. restrooms nearby
P. Vo
Night time views. Breath taking. Definitely recommend it.
Haukur V. Jonsson
Been about 20 years since I last came that close to the monument.. did not go up this time (don't even know if that is still a thing) but truly something you must check out if you are in DC.. along with all the other monuments around it. Hope next time I'm in the area POTUS will let me in for a brew or two 😅🤞🍻 …
Ian Van der Merwe
This was a highlight of my 2 day stay. Great views and so informative. (Don't pay those who try to sell you a ticket. It is free.)
Brian Altena
Highly recommend going to the top of thr monument.
Raphaël Mailhot
Loved it but was making me dizzy bcause its so high on crack
Craig Sullivan
One of the most interesting pieces of architecture in D.C.. Stop by at night to get a fantastic view.
The surrounding area is exceptionally peaceful when it isn't busy.
The reflection of the monument from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is a sight to behold. Again, try to check it out at night!
harris gilliam
The view is cool. Wish the windows were a bit bigger but that's probably structurally difficult. Cool museum inside. You must get there early (8:30am) to get the free tickets thought.
Nobuteru Hirata (Nobu's Life style)
Me and my wife and my friends visited here last Sunday for a day trip. It was really good weather to visit all museums and all memorial monuments. I saw it for the first time and I think it was really huge when we get closer. I didn’t go on top but just to visit is really nice. I also noticed that there was so many food track that I can get any kinds of food there that also very satisfying!!
Charletta Tolbert Osborne
Night tour experience during a guided tour. Awesome experience.
Michelle Phillips
This has been the second that I have come here. Once when I was like 6 years old. The day was beautiful with amazing weather and wasn’t too crowded. Glad I was able to take my kids to see our beautiful Capital!
As If
Nice to see from afar. Super windy and cold from the base of the monument . Even if you have tickets to go all the way to the top, you have to wait in line. Not sure how it would be in the summer though.
MJ Krugell
I was very lucky to get a free ticket early the morning. I would recommend getting up early and go get your free tickets. The waiting time to go in eland up is about an hour give or take. But the views and history around this monument is well worth it. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Washington.
Brianne Trottier
Highly recommend visiting at night as the Washington and Lincoln Memorials are the only things visible in the sky. Very few people were there at night, which made it easy to park and walk around the entire mall. Definitely a must see for anyone who lives in the US.
ketan rathod
What a nice scenic view. You are informed about the history of the monument while going up. The tickets are hard to get though they are free. Considering that it's a small place up they allow only limited people every hour. We stayed there for 90 minutes.
Love Lacy
It was great to get back after years of being closed from the damage sustained during a rare DC earthquake. The new security procedures are on the slower side. I guess it's for a good reason. Opens to the public 9.19.19 tickets are first come first served.
matt jackson
Absolutely fantastic place. If you are an American, you need to visit this monument to our greatest President. Wonderful views of the city that you can get no where else. Now it is easier than ever with the online ticket reservation system. Go and visit, you will not regret it.
Only con: Slow down the elevator when passing the stone donated by the States, it goes far too fast!
Tricia W
Great experience! It's soooo big!
Dakota Aitken
Such an interesting and beautiful obelisk.
Bohdan Salo
Must to visit. Wonderful views on different part of city (500 foot level). I recommend book ticket before or you should take it very early in the morning, in other cases u can not go inside :)
Bluz Tech
I definitely recommend this place. It is great. You get a great view of the nations capital from up there. And even if you don't go up the monument and park are beautiful. The National mall is amazing. Here are some pics.
Peace B
Definitely recommend this place. One of the iconic/historic sites of Washington DC. One place to not miss when in DC.The whole strip on the mall has so much history and is a perfect tribute to all those who worked hard to keep this nation together and worked hard for the nation.Every time we visit DC we spend an evening on the mall.Best place to pictures.YOu will see the monument pretty much everywhere in DC.
edt ttt
Another iconic monuments in Washington DC
AH
The admission is free but you many have to line up before hand. It takes around half an hour to go up and enjoy the 360 view and come back again. The elevator is made Interactive and stops at 2 point to point out interesting architectural facts about the monument.
Melinda Santiago Ferrer
Very good place to walk and take your family and take pictures. You may need to wear tennis shoes, if you want to enjoy everything. No establish trash cans and no restrooms available. So go the bathroom before you arrive there and be ready to spend at least 3 hours.
Rekha Gupta
All these pictures are taken on the same day. We were in treat with this beautiful sunset and the view at night was breathtaking.
Chris Taylor
This is a big 'ol stack of granite and marble. And it's pretty damn cool. I've never been up in it. My first visit, it was still closed from earthquake damage. It has opened back up now, but you have to line up for tickets at super early in the morning. If you're visiting DC and can manage it, go to the monuments at night. Less people, cooler experience. Literally and figuratively.
Nd D
Beautiful iconic US history. To go inside you need advanced tickets. You will see the stones are in 2 colors. Originally they only built it partially and due to war and money it was stopped for many years. Then when they continued, they had to purchase the stones from elsewhere thus different colors.
Wade Williams
Iconic monument that I never get tired of looking at.
James Walker
The vandalism with the splashing of red paint on the side of the iconic monument had been cleared. The day of my visit, all appeared normal.
Anand Chaudhari
One of the most iconic monument in the city. You get a nice view of Lincoln memorial and capitol hill along with city view.
Must visit on a less crowded day. Get your picnic baskets and carpet with you and wind down with your favorite people around this. Plenty of space for whole family.
Finding parking is tricky around the area but so is in the whole city. Plenty of food trucks near by and public restroom makes it a good place for extended hangout.
Rohit Surana
The most marvelous monument in Washington, DC
M S
Center of National Mall and you can view this from a long distance..This is one of the top ten monuments in Washington. Amazing that it was all built with bricks and very interesting to see the color change caused by the halt in work before completion. This can be viewed from so many places but the best view is to walk down the wide mall.
Dragan Ange
Take the elevator up there to enjoy the beautiful view.
There is some info about the Washington Monument: Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father. When completed, the Washington Monument was the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches. Construction of the Washington Monument began in 1848 with enslaved Africans as laborers, according to several sources. Construction stopped in 1854 due to lack of funds, and then resumed from 1877 until its completion in 1888.
Nate Church
An iconic place to see for sure. However, in my opinion, the architecture isn't breath-taking - it is pretty, but it's simply tall. The reflection pool is what is cool and known from so many movie shots.
It's definitely a place to take pictures and check out, but I wouldn't put it as a "must-see" if you're time is crunched while in DC.
Randy Vaughan KN4WBH
Have to register early for the free daily tickets..well before they open to go up to the top..beautiful sight none the less
MindfulLiving Bellevue
Very hard to get tickets. You can try to get tickets online otherwise wake up early and get there by 7 am near the traffic intersection . Each day they hand out 200 tickets so be the very first in line to get tickets. Parking is easy to find in the early morning for only $2.40 per hour up to 3 hours maximum.
Albert Wu
Got tickets online to go up the monument on a weekday. It was rather easy to book during the pandemic between delta and omicron. Waited about 15 minutes in line to get on the elevator. It was the day for the National Christmas Tree lighting so roads to White House were blocked by trucks. While we were waiting in line Prez helicopter just flew over to drop Biden at the Lawn. On top we could the helicopter leaving the White House Lawn. Pretty cool
The views on top was very nice and not crowded. It was a very pleasant visit to the Monument. There is a brief exhibit about the history of the Monument on top. On the elevator trip down, the elevator would slow down twice for riders to see the memorial stones gifted by the states for the Monument. Nice ride.
Tuval Barnea
Apart from the fact that it is one of the world's most incredible buildings, it's history and the history of George Washington is so impressive and going up to the top of that building and looking down at all the incredible structures around it really emphasizes its greatness.
The view from the top is amazing and is definitely a must!
Peggy
If you don't get tickets in advance don't bother trying to get them the day of unless you plan on getting there by 6am. They only give out 150 tickets for the day of. At 845am and ppl in line can get 6 ea. That being said, it is obviously a must see! You can see the entire national mall, the White House, and Jefferson Memorial all from the Washington monument. We went back at night and it is an entirely different beautiful experience!
Aimee Lim
This landmark is beautiful. A photographers masterpiece. We drove here just for a visit. We came early. It was crowded already. Cherry blossom festival but we still enjoy the day. Very educational place and maintained. The water feature is a plus. We will come back again.
Maria D.
I thought this is just a perfect place to visit.its so American!! Makes you understand and appreciate this country.👏👏👍👍❤❤....just need to be ready for the long walks.the restrooms are so far apart.😎.if you think you cant hold it I suggest to wear adult diapers😊...and of course a good pair of walking shoes is a must..🚶♀️👟🧢🕶please consult the great shoe outlets for their suggestions. I just know I only walked half the distance ..got to the rest room and walked back to the car..parking is really really so far away...😫
But the place is historic and a great place to keep your heritage at heart...👍❤
Joe Joe
(Read till end) You got to go up, and put your hand on this building. It’s awe inspiring and phenomenal how people built such an incredible structure with such accuracy! You need 2 - 3 full days to visit all the museums and monuments. NOTE: Bring water! Come with comfortable walking shoes. You will regret wearing flip-flops 🩴 …
stephen shaw (Sailhammer)
I think it has all been said already. You must go and see the Washington Monument when in DC! Just wanted to share these pictures I was able to capture on my last trip.
Marcio Risso
The obelisk, about 160m tall, is a famous spot in Washington DC, located in the National Mall.
It's was built to commemorate George Wasghington, the first President of USA.
The monument can be seen from most of the places in Washington DC and it's impossible to not call attention from people passiong through.
zig zog
Great place, but if you hear music coming from the monument, don’t stick around for long.
Md. Imrul Reza Shishir
This is a beautiful monument, located in the heart of Washington DC. in the walking distance you will find a lot of museum. You do need to purchase tickets earlier if you want to see the whole scenario from the top of that. They sell out insanely ☹️
Rello Dmv
Nice view during the day but im hearing its a sight to see at night. I got a few pics of the monument and the restrooms beside the monument as well as some posters located close by. I just was walking by but i heard about elevator to go up inside the monument. The bathroom was clean and wasn’t crowded.
Saurav Shrestha
The monument tower and the park are well maintained. I did not go inside this time as my visit was for limited days but the area around it is great to have a walk. The reflection of the tower looks great during night from the Lincoln Memorial Building.
Szymon !
The Washington Monument was one of my favorite experiences on my trip to DC. The park rangers are very nice, and the tour was only one dollar! Provides a great view of the surrounding area. Would recommend
Edward Kindel
Absolutely breathtaking, a true awe inspiring monument. Didn't get tickets to go up but beautiful none the less
Exitus Acta Probat
Always Magnificent. But what you don't know is that the east facing side of cap of the monument is this inscription, "Laus Deo," which means, Praise to God, yet, the replica located in the museum within the monument has the inscription (Laus Deo) facing the wall... Washington, I am sure, would be disappointed considering he was a man of deep faith in Christ.
Venus Medlin
Actually we pressed our way to the 'Black History Museum' which is next to the national mall.
They were having a special event, so we were not able to get in. It looked absolutely stunning from the outside. I can't wait to go back and take my family.
Steffanny Leiva
I had the opportunity to get ticket to go all the way up. Really worth it.
It’s really hard to get the tickets, but you have to try a couple of days and make sure you create an account to get it easy. I recommend you set an alarm at 9:50am and be prepared.
H. Poyraz
It's a must see place when you come to Washington.
Clifford Rosen
Tickets for the Washington Monument are available online every day at 10AM for the next day. The views were great.
Joseph Mixon
You can literally see everything from the top. Spectacular view! Don’t bring any combs or hair picks because they are prohibited.
Dr.med. Ghada Atta
One of the mean sight seeing in Washington it’s facing the capitol , and the other side facing the White House
To book the ticket for getting inside to the top , you have to book it day before
Ankit Gupta
Awesome experience.
Evening view is very nice.
There are food trucks near the monument.
Eduardo Mace
This great obelisk monument is a must visit in Washington. From up close you have brilliant views of the mall from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial on one axis. On the other axis the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the White House.
Hervin Avila Melgar
Is a beautiful place to go in the day. there is a lot of traffic, but you enjoy!
Trent
This is a ver popular tourist destination. There are plenty of food trucks near by that serve ice cream, tacos, sandwiches, etc, with nonalcoholic drinks. There are several pay-as-you-go electric bicycles and scooters if you become tired walking in the park but must be accessed via app and credit card. You can enter the Washington Monument itself, however all tickets are sold online only and with a credit card.
Robert Scott
It’s as big as you would expect and really cool to see in person. I am not sure if anyone gets to up top anymore. Enjoy the pics.
Ember Sam
Amazing place to visit while in Washington D. C. It's a legacy of President Washington. You can see the top of the monument from The White House and many other places. It has visiting hours if you want see inside of the Monument tickets are issued on first come first serve basis daily.
Ryan Easterday
Always a neat visit. if you're trying to go up to the top, go online at least a day before to purchase tickets.
Ian White
No photograph or video can show the majesty and power when looking at the Washington Memorial from any distance.
Close up, it paradoxically seems more solid and substantial and quite delicate at the same time. The rangers are very friendly and helpful and the views across the city from the base are magnificent. I didn't go to the top as I am not good at heights but the view must be stunning!
Fabian Raygosa
Under renovation so could only walk the grounds. Still a very nice and very amazing structure. Lot of lawn. Guess they do not worry about water on this coast.
Misty Spitler
The Monument is breathtaking at night. It is a great time to avoid the hustle/bustle and truly allows you to take in all it's glory.
Gaurrav Hemdev
Much bigger in person, grand presence. Need to book tickets in advance to get an internal tour. We didn't get the chance to go in.
benjamin thomas
The Washington Monument is always a great spot on the hill, but now you need to reserve tickets starting at 10am for the following day, so you will need to plan in advance if you'd like to go up.
Greg Mosby
Lucky enough to get tickets online the day before. The views from the top are amazing!
S. Hari
One word: very beautiful. While we travel there, they closed monument for repair elevator. So, we miss chance to go top and look around DC. But still it is beautiful place to visit and explore around dc. Hope they have already fixed this and reopened for public. I have visited twice but both time I was unlucky to have to opportunity to ride to the top. I wish always to go to the top and see that view, but I don’t get chance to go there recently. Such an iconic monument to walk by and see. Oh yeah, there’s limited food store and truck available so make sure you have enough diet before visit there. You can see it from all over DC and on the tip of Virginia. It's a spectacle especially at night. In weekend and holidays this area will is very crowded so be prepared to share space. Make sure someone can bump you accidentally and you also so be easy with public. Absolutely don’t forget to mark this place to your visiting list while you are planning for visit United State of America. White house, Capital building and other hearts of us capital all around here. And you also make plane to visit many museums they are around here.
sean la
Awesome site to see. Great place to visit even cherry blossom 🌸 are in bloom. …
Tu Tran (TstAr)
This monument is priority must-go place if you have change to visit The capital city of the USA. Simple design but it is symbolic for many core values of America of the United State. I think it could be the symbolic of the USA’s foundation stone.
A R
Very cool place to visit.
Harley Stine
✍️
My eye is always drawn to the monument when driving in and out of DC, taking off and landing from DCA, in all seasons, day and night. I hope you enjoy some of the shots I have taken over the years I am posting here. Sadly, I have lost many shots to the cloud. Some of my favorites are ones shot in the wee hours. Can you tell which ones they are?
Zoe Rabago
Iconic place to see
What a great thing to see
They do have a tour to go in.
Nice to see at night too
Amy Dew
The area was beautiful and there was a lot of food options, and water bottle kiosks along the way. The grass was kept well and the views were phenomenal. All of the signs around were helpful in finding our way to each land mark. Looking forward to our next chance to check out the city and the free national museums!
Suzana Kedron
A must see. If you want to go inside get your tickets ahead of time.
Ondari D. Mogeni
The monument area provides a picturesque view of Washington DC in a 360 dimension. A serene place for reflections and a lot of tourism activities to do. And for those who love jogging, enough places to.
Meghan Charochak
Tour was excellent and elevator to the top was fast! The views from the top of the monument are amazing. I just wish the elevator had less people riding it on the way down so we could have seen the special memorial stones on the interior better.
It's best to get tickets well in advance. We got tickets at recreation.gov the day before and tickets are limited and go extremely fast.
Julio de la Yncera
Classic Washington DC is full with monuments to remind us of our rich history. The Obelisk is near the White House and the national mall. At its base 50 American flags are always flying. One per state. At night powerful lights shine over it. Is a monument to George Washington.
Kenny Chan
Everyone who visits DC should go here! The view is great, best if one could go here before going anywhere else. It is a great overview of the National Mall. The tour guides (rangers) are very nice but I would say the security agents could have been more polite. Overall, great experience.
Rahul Kini
The Washington Memorial sits high and majestic, overlooking the National Mall and the Capitol building across it. The monument is tall and the tours are available for all visitors booking them a day in advance. The place can get really cold in winters, so be thoughtful enough to stay warm and comfortable.
Dennis Peery
Glad to have been able to see it up close.
Kenneth Clayton
There are some things that require no debate or afterthoughts. If your visiting the District of Columbia, you must see and visit certain historical sites and monuments. The Washington Monument is on that list. The tallest freestanding stone structure in the world. No metal framework of any kind. The 360 views are spectacular. Another awe inspiring visit.
Ajay Thakur
Rangers were very friendly. It was well organized monument tour. View from top is beautiful and getting tickets is worth it.
Kimberly Holgate
Really cool history surrounding this monument and it's construction. You should definitely go see it.
Atul Shrivastava
This iconic monument is a must see and not to be missed if you are visiting DC. This is a beautiful place to walk around with family to hangout and feel the capital. Lincoln memorial, White house, State capital Building and Smithsonian museums (National Air and Space, Arts and more) are all surrounded. Only thing is you have to walk a lot to see all the beautiful museums and monuments, but worth it.
Super Football 2000
If you're doing a tour of D.C., this one of the must-see locations. Get up close and admire the architecture honoring our first President. On a walking tour, this should be just one of many stops on your tour.
L Y N N “P O P E S”
Very tall monument built in honor of George Washington. Building stands tall and proud and can be seen from a great distance. Was an honor to see it up close and to take pictures. Too bad we weren't allowed to go in as it was closed at the time. We still had fun visiting places around.
Marie Neang
One of the most famous landmark in DC. Definitely a must-see although you can often spot it from everywhere!
The good thing is that the area it's placed on is so huge that it never seems crowded so you can take nice pics!
Jessica Marcum
Beautiful day, it was crowded but not too bad. I’m glad we were able to see it.
Karthikeyan Rajaram
We drove from NJ to DC during the Holiday season to visit some of the famous monuments that are lined up next to each other. The Washington monument is almost like the Eiffel Tower of DC as it’s almost visible from anywhere for his gigantic height.
Two things I learned during our visit to this place - What a 555 feet tall building would actually look like and what an Obelisk (monument with a rectangular or square cross section and a pyramid shape at the top).
We visited this place in December around sunset time so that we could see this beauty in daylight, twilight and lightings. You cannot appreciate its beauty by standing beneath and looking up agape, instead get to Lincoln memorial from which you can see its real built with some nice reflection on the pond. We were lucky to catch up with it after taking a stroll at the Lincoln memorial. If you are at DC, this should be in your visit list.
Brad Paradis
Amazing to see this at night. This whole area is beautiful and a great experience to take in at our nation’s capital. Decent distance between monuments. Be prepared to walk or rent bikes/scooters.
Pakeezha
It was the kite festival on this day! Weather was amazing! T-shirt weather with a breeze. The blossoms were in full bloom! But it was SUPER crowded... make sure you have the patience. Uber ride took an HOUR. That’s how busy it was..
Matt
I mean how awesome is this monument. So much history here, offering spectacular views. Unfortunately when I went, the tower was closed so you won't be able to go all the way up, but the view from the bottom is just as great.

"First in War, First in Peace, and First in the hearts of his countrymen."
George Washington's military and political leadership were indispensable to the founding of the United States. As commander of the Continental Army, he rallied Americans from thirteen divergent states and outlasted Britain's superior military force. As the first president, Washington's superb leadership set the standard for each president that has succeeded him. The Washington Monument towers above the city that bears his name, serving as an awe-inspiring reminder of George Washington's greatness. The monument, like the man, stands in no one's shadow.
The Washington Monument, designed by Robert Mills and eventually completed by Thomas Casey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, honors and memorializes George Washington at the center of the nation's capital. The structure was completed in two phases of construction, one private (1848-1854) and one public (1876-1884). Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father. When completed, the Washington Monument was the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches.
sujith mohan
Must watch once in life time.. Awesome view of DC
Laura Ramirez
Lovely building. It really stands out and brings up certain feelings. The reflecting pool is a perfect place to observe and reflect. If you go during sunset hours you can really appreciate the changing colors of the sky reflecting off the monument. Definitely recommend
Sanjay Gupta
sad but this place is temporary closed till 2019.
to honor the first president of USA, the monument was built, and it is world tallest stone structure too.
few places in dc are known to everyone like capitol building- Lincoln memorial-white house and this Washington monument. this is in same national mall zone, in one straight line with capitol and Lincoln memorial. its walking distance from the capitol. while coming to dc, you can see this monument from miles away. the best pic one can get is from Lincoln memorial where the reflection of monument you can see in the reflective pool. that is an awesome view, especially at sunset time. night view of this monument is amazing.
Kajal Malani
It’s beautiful place. Lots of places near by each other within 5miles distance. A clear change in the color of the stones can be seen about one-third of the way up the monument; the slightly darker stones at the bottom were placed before construction paused, while the lighter stones above it were brought in from a different quarry following the Civil War.
Cat Barber
This is a cool site to see while in DC. Although we were not able to go inside due to the renovations it is still worth going to. This monument is like the real life pinpoint when trying to figure where you're at.
Key Notes:
- When it is open you do need tickets to get inside, it should be opening the spring of 2019.
- This monument can be found across from the White House in between the Capitol building and the Lincoln Memorial (note: there is a big distance in between them, they are not right next to each other).
- If you want to get a view of DC similar to the Washington Monument go to the Old Post Office tower located inside the Trump International Hotel (the Old Post Office tower is the 2nd highest town in DC, right after the Washington Monument). You can get a feel for what you would experience in the Washington Monument.
- There is a Washington Monument store located in the front (closer to the Capitol Building side). This is where you can get your Passport Book stamped for this National Park and many other locations stamped.
- There is a restroom located here as well.
- This monument can be seen from almost anywhere in the heart of DC.

We did not go up in the Monument. I hear it is worth doing, though. Lunch from one of the plethora of food trucks nearby ran about $40 for burgers, fries and drinks for four. Very tasty, tho, and better than the $72 cold sandwiches and salad we had at the Museum of Natural History cafe.
Michael Burchett
This impressive monument can be seen from almost every other nearby monument. I wish it had longer hours of operation, there is clearly a demand. You can walk right up to it, though from the outside.
Other than having more accessible hours, it could be about 8 feet taller. But, otherwise a great feature of the DC area.
Zachary Le Duc
Cool structure. It was closed for elevator maintenance until mid September (we were too late to go up anyway). It's still really cool to look at and at night it is lit up nicely. Near the monument gives you good views of the capital building, the Lincoln Memorial, the reflecting pool, and the WWII memorial.
Idan F
Finally after long time I see the best view in town. Short line at the ticket's office starting around 8am, located right next to the Washington monument, dont be late and Don't Miss the Great View in The Capitol 🤠 …
Pratik J
Definitely one of the most iconic buildings in the world. Stands as a unique symbol dedicated to the first president of the United States.
You can feel the presence of history when you are near it.
Even though it's visible from everywhere in the DC metro area, quite a different experience to see it up close.

The Washington Monument is an obelisk shaped building within the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (1775–1784) in the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States (1789–1797). Located almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial,[2] the monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss,[3] is both the world's tallest predominantly stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk,[A] standing 554 feet 7+11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall according to the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (measured 2013–14) or 555 feet 5+1⁄8 inches (169.294 m) tall, according to the National Park Service (measured 1884).[B] It is the tallest monumental column in the world if all are measured above their pedestrian entrances.Overtaking the Cologne Cathedral, it was the tallest structure in the world between 1884 and 1889, after which it was overtaken by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Progress toward a memorial finally began in 1833. That year a large group of citizens formed the Washington National Monument Society. Three years later, in 1836, after they had raised $28,000 in donations (equivalent to $1,000,000 in 2020), they announced a competition for the design of the memorial.

Great place to visit while touring historical monuments in DC. Easy access to many other monuments via walking or biking. There are bikes to rent easily for your tour.
Traeden Overly
Such an amazing and beautiful monument, this monument can be seen from afar and brings a sense of power and inspiraron. A little history on the obelisk. The obelisk is a sign of power and the sun god used back in the ancient time of Egypt. They would put these symbols over graves to protect them in the afterlife.
Jeanette Griffen
It was super easy to get to since we were staying at the hotel down the street. The only problem we really had was we went to visit the monument around the late afternoon & we got eaten up by gnats and mosquitoes by the water. Other then that it was amazing to see this monument it’s the history of our country, it’s so beautiful, everything was super great and I hope we can come again.
Brian Kong
You need to get q free ticket from the visitors center to go up to the top. Be there by 7:30 am to ensure you a spot. Time slots run out fast and tickets run out quickly!
Brenda
A unique monument and beautiful in many photos. I would love to spend more time here.

There's not much to see on this one.. it's just an iconic structure in American history that symbolizes so much!
Plan ahead. Its free. Tickets to go up via an elevator gets sold on-line months ahead for a $1. They distribute more tickets on-site but make sure you fall in line to get tickets as early as 730am. By 830am, there were no more tickets left.
The view above is incredible.
As every building in this city, you have to go through an 'airport-like' security.
A must-see!
If this review helped you in anyway, please give it a thumbs up!

After seeing this picturesque, highly esteemed, and historically monumental fixture on television for decades, I finally got to stand in her presence last year.
Better yet, we visited as a family, with our, then 9-month-old baby boy, who got a first-hand view of history.
This is one beautiful, yet a towering piece of architecture that can be seen from many different angles and spaces.
It is even more alluring, like in the movies, to be able to witness planes fly over.
Just wow.
Ekaterina Filson
Great place to visit!
You can go inside, take the elevator and look at Washington from the top!
They let in a limited number of people per day. So come early.
You can get tickets for it right at the spot for free!! Or you can pre-order them for $1.50 per ticket.
Washington Monument is near Smithsonian Museum (free admissions as well) and the White House. Pretty close you can walk.
I would recommend to stop by. Very interesting experience.
rajesh sharma
Among the greatest landmarks in America. This monument has a lot of history. It was built over more than 25 years.
A subtle interesting thing you can see a change in the color of the stones at about 1/3rd of its hight from the bottom. This was because that stone at the bottom had finished during the time of construction and it was restarted only 25 years later. At the moment it is closed for entry due to some technical fault in the elevators. It is visible from all parts of the national mall and around.
Brad Bichsel
This is one of those monuments you just can’t miss. You can see it from many directions and if you’re lucky even when landing and/or taking off at DCA. If you’re flying Southwest Airlines ask the pilot when you enter the plan which direction DC will be on and you should get a pretty good, but very quick view. Currently the Monument is under elevator updates but once it reopened it is worth the trip to the top. You can see a great view from the surrounding areas, but also all the amazing stones that states have sent. There a small amount of tickets available each day... You can reserve tickets online or get up super early and wait in line.
Dayana Hoyos
Loved taking photos and learning ! But just the weather was bad! But it was an amazing experience.
Catalina Hernández
Must do experience in Washington D.C. highest point and best view of the city. Admission if free, you just need to get the tickets early, they go fast. Tip: Reserve good time for this activity, even if you have a ticket at a specific time, it will take at least 30 minutes to get inside.
C E (CreatedEarthFan)
Requires a reservation but so worth it. A worthy memorial to the greatest president.
Amanda Murray
Quintessentially American! A must at least once in a person's life. So glad it's finally reopened. Views are wonderful and worth the journey to the top. Go America!
Nakiska Papenfuss
A must see on an American History tour! Super unique monument with a lot of history built into it (literally). Great views from the top with knowledgeable rangers on site.
Jack
Just as awesome as I thought it would be. I would recommend getting tickets to go up to the top of the monument because the view was spectacular!
Danica Sequoyah
Beautiful, loved being able to see the Washington monument 💙 …
Maureen Retzbach
Beautiful lit up at night with the flags surrounding it flapping in the breeze. The monument is currently closed to visitors for repairs, so we couldn't go up (Oct. 18). The Washington monument is very impressive though from the outside. Just beware, in Washington DC all the monuments seem really close together, but they are not. We ended up walking almost 10 miles. Bring good walking shoes!
Martina Huertas
This whole walk was a definitely iconic moment in our vacation, being finally face to face to these magnificent monuments which we would always see in movies and tv. While we may not be americans, the presence of both the Lincoln statue as the obelisk are impactful on all of us, such impressive structures. Loved it all
Geraldine Prieto.
Built to honor George Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States, the Washington Monument was once the tallest building in the world at just over 555 feet. The monument to America’s first president still holds the title of world’s tallest stone structure and obelisk. Maintained by the National Park Service, the Washington Monument is located on the center of the National Mall between the U.S. Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.
The easiest way to get to the monument is by taking the Metro. The two closest Metro stops are Federal Triangle and Smithsonian, both on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. If traveling by bus, take DC Circulator’s National Mall route or ride Metrobus routes 32, 34 or 36. If driving, visitor parking is available on Ohio Drive, between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. Note that street parking is often limited near the National Mall.
Bill Wang
If you wanna go to the top. You better buy a ticket online first.
Kimberly Wilcox
I got to go this past weekend to the monument and see the 50 anniversary for Neil Armstrong landing on the moon. It was a wonderful experience that I will never forget. The monument is having work done on the inside so unfortunately I didnt get to go up. Right in the center of D.C near the WWII memorial and across from Lincoln. Super pretty to look at during the night time
Paul Onderwater
The monument can be seem from so many places around the Washington Mall area.
The best view is from the top of the monument.
Go early in the day to get your tickets from Park Services.
If you are in town more than a few days, try and go up during different times of the day, as the light can make everything you see look so different.
Enjoy the experience of learning about the monument and all it holds when you get there!
Nathan Moon
One of my favorite evening hangouts in the nice weather. A great place to watch people and sunsets. Even when the rest of the city is packed with tourists and commuters you're never crowded in on the Mall unless there's an Inauguration or it's July 4th. Sadly the monument itself has been closed for much of the last decade as it went through renovation and then repair after the Earthquake...yes earthquake. Who knew?
Rob Jelinski
The Washington Monument is one of my favorite sights to see when visiting DC! I love the way it peaks into the landscape as you are venturing in the city and it is fun to walk around the park surrounding it. People can hang out grab bites from the food trucks, snap a selfie or even see people playing soccer. I happened to see a dude dressed as Spider-Man playing soccer (which was a fun surprise). It was opening weekend for The Avengers: End Game so maybe it was a promo stunt
sabi shah
Absolutely the landmark in Washington D.C. You just can't miss it~
It is the tallest building in Washington D.C. since they don't allow any high rise building here.
Definitely a place to visit!
Isaac Nakata
Went here for the cherry blossom festival. It was insanely crowded. Tried to participate in the kite festival but.that was just too crazy to find a spot to get a kite in the air without smashing it into someone. At least cherry blossoms viewing was great. Although they were not in full bloom they were full enough to make it worth the trip! The only other place I have seen cherry blossoms has been in Japan although not as good it was a good substitute.
Ken and Alicia Lund
There are some many different places in Washington affording great views of this towering obelisk that the sorts of photos you can take are endless. There is ample grassy space around the monument to have a rest on the lawn, eat a lunch from a local food truck, or just enjoy people watching. One of America's most recognizable and epic landmarks.
Ankita Singh
This place is very much spectacular, and the best part about this place is that there is no fee to visit this Monument. It is very near by to white house, world war II Memorial and lincoln memorial. If you start from White House then it will be very easy to cover all these three monuments. It marks the center of the four main monuments which mark as the most important buildings of Washington DC.
UYEN KHANH Tran
Definitely worth visiting. The Vietnamese lovingly call the monument “The Pencil Tower”. I mean it makes perfect sense. It does look like a pencil.
Pinanshu Pokale
One of the coolest experience to visit but remember to book a ticket on app or physically as early as possible.
Tickets finish the fastest.
Aaron D'Souza
Book the visit in advance, big slay
Henry Wimcas
The place was still cordoned off when I was there. I really liked it from the distance though; rising tall above the capital of the United states. It was the first famous structure I've seen when driving into dc, and it was a majestic sight.
Vasil Nestorov
What a great place to visit in Washington DC, the tour of the Washington monument was wonderful. An incredible place to learn history about the first president of the states. Great view definitely should go to the top!
Arushi Bhardwaj
The walk from the Lincoln memorial to the Washington monument is really stunning.
Luis Daniel
Not as nice as Lincoln or MLK memorial but still appreciated the beautiful structure. Get here early, tons of people come here to picnic or just enjoy the outdoors
Petry Purenia
Experience the view of National Mall from the top. It's free, just get the ticket from the small office in front of Washington Monument (down hill). Go to the back of the small gift store, you'll find a person who distribute the ticket. They start to distribute at 9am for the whole day. FYI, the Monument close at 4.30.

The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (1775–1784), in the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States (1789–1797). Located almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, is both the world's tallest predominantly stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, standing 554 feet 7 11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall according to the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (measured 2013–14) or 555 feet 5 1⁄8 inches (169.294 m) tall according to the National Park Service (measured 1884). It is the tallest monumental column in the world if all are measured above their pedestrian entrances. Overtaking the Cologne Cathedral, it was the tallest structure in the world between 1884 and 1889, after which it was overtaken by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Construction of the monument began in 1848 and was halted for a period of 23 years, from 1854 to 1877 due to a lack of funds, a struggle for control over the Washington National Monument Society, and the American Civil War. Although the stone structure was completed in 1884, internal ironwork, the knoll, and installation of memorial stones were not completed until 1888. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (46 m) or 27% up, shows where construction was halted and later resumed with marble from a different source. The original design was by Robert Mills (1781–1855) of South Carolina, but he did not include his proposed colonnade due to a lack of funds, proceeding only with a bare obelisk. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848; the first stone was laid atop the unfinished stump on August 7, 1880; the capstone was set on December 6, 1884; the completed monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885; and officially opened October 9, 1888.
The Washington Monument is a hollow Egyptian style stone obelisk with a 500-foot (152.4 m) tall column surmounted by a 55-foot (16.8 m) tall pyramidion. Its walls are 15 feet (4.6 m) thick at its base and 1 1⁄2 feet (0.46 m) thick at their top. The marble pyramidion has thin walls only 7 inches (18 cm) thick supported by six arches, two between opposite walls that cross at the center of the pyramidion and four smaller corner arches. The top of the pyramidion is a large marble capstone with a small aluminum pyramid at its apex with inscriptions on all four sides. The lowest 150 feet (45.7 m) of the walls, constructed during the first phase 1848–1854, are composed of a pile of bluestone gneiss rubble stones (not finished stones) held together by a large amount of mortar with a facade of semi-finished marble stones about 1 1⁄4 feet (0.4 m) thick. The upper 350 feet (106.7 m) of the walls, constructed during the second phase 1880–1884, are composed of finished marble surface stones, half of which project into the walls, partially backed by finished granite stones.
The interior is occupied by iron stairs that spiral up the walls, with an elevator in the center, each supported by four iron columns, which do not support the stone structure. The stairs contain fifty sections, most on the north and south walls, with many long landings stretching between them along the east and west walls. These landings allowed many inscribed memorial stones of various materials and sizes to be easily viewed while the stairs were accessible (until 1976), plus one memorial stone between stairs that is difficult to view. monument, and it was closed until 2014. It was closed again for elevator system repairs, security upgrades, and mitigation of soil contamination from August 2016 to September 2019.

Great tour. Loved it. Views from the top are amazing. Its a wonderful view of the mall, the Capitol, the White House and the surrounding areas.
Jose Hernandez
It’s just! A great feeling to be this close! If you ever come to DC! It’s worth it!
sarah s
Great views from the top of the Washington monument! Waited 15-30 minutes in line on a Wednesday, got my tickets same day at the ticket booth by the restrooms. They start tours every half hour.
Benita Cloward
Took a few hours of our day to stop by DC with the family. Lots of tourists as expected but the monument itself did not disappoint. We loved the reflection pool and the monument with the fountain and all the states was really cool as well! Great historical day trip!
Tina
Getting tickets was a little tricky, process started two months ago for us but it was well worth it! Great views and an important historical monument!
Deluxe Shaves
You can't go wrong altho if you wish to go inside you should order your tickets ahead cause they don't last long
Peace Steve
Impressive architecture, you can't miss it standing at 555ft.
Tallest obelisk in the world
Barbara Correa
The best demonstration of collaboration between states and an architecture in all times, reading its construction is interesting
Ruben Marquez
This a beautiful monument, centrally located. You can ride to the top, once you understand the significance, you will be amazed. It feels so bold yet calm. Bring your walking shoes and look all the way around
Debisree Ray
Another must visit if you are in DC area. This is a nice monument in central DC, in between the Lincoln memorial and the state capital. The spectacular wide greeneries and the iconic buildings make the place very pretty. There are a lot of food trucks seeking good food. Given the weather is nice, you would always find the place very busy.
Kevin Koehler
The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington since he was the First President of the United States and also commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The Washington Monument is 555 feet tall (169 meters) it is a very prominent structure in Washington D.C. and just about where ever you look you will see it. I have only been around the outside of the Washington Monument and never been inside.
Charles Nesheiwat
The monument is huge. The actual size of it is crazy to see up close. It's made from a beautiful stone and has lots of space to walk around and take pictures in front of it. It's a great monument I just wish I was able to go inside.
K K
Amazing and powerful building. It’s closed till spring 2019, unfortunately. If you want to come in and visit the top of the monument, come in 2019. Other than that, it’s a fantastic place to walk around and take pictures of it. Anytime if the day, it looks just stunning.
Aaron Ochse
One of the great DC monuments! Beautiful views out over the mall as well. A must see on your visit.
Dhruba jyoti Das
Main attraction in DC for tourists.
I was there on 4th juky to witness the most spectacular fireworks.
There is no entry fee here. Best way to reach is by subway
Janelle Mang
It's hard to get tickets online. Tickets are available first come first serve at the window the day of tours. The window opens at 8:45. If you have a larger party or are looking for a specific time, get there early! We arrived at 8:30 and there was already a long line. The last available spots were for 4:00. We were able to get those but there were only a few tickets left after us.
The park rangers were awesome and very knowledgeable.
Ev. P.
This is the biggest obelisk in the world. Anyone visiting Washington does not have the choice but to see this sight. Anyone going closer to it though, should notice that the colour of the stones has two different tones a grey one at the bottom and a more beige one starting below the middle through the top. This is due to the fact that it was built on two phases as there was lack in funds. Anyway it is worth walking around it and it will surely reward you with beautiful photos!
Bogdan M
Great time ... visited during the kite festival. The place was pack with people and kids. A lot of fun. Many tangled kite but still awesome time. Everything around is nice and clean. For a quick bite you can stop by the carts. Also, if you visit DC you can find a lot of souvenirs to buy. Recommend for all ages.
Coreysan S
This Majestic monument is amazing to see up close in person. It was closed in the evening when I passed through but I was able to get amazing photos while walking among the memorials of the area. It is truly an amazing and powerful structure to see. It can be seen from quite a ways away as you are coming into D.C. from different directions and is easily one of the first monuments you notice in D.C. I definitely plan to visit again during that day in the future to get a closer look.
Ashish Mittal
It was very well maintained. If you want to see it from inside then you need to book ticket atleast 1 month earlier.
BradJill
The Washington Monument is an enormous 555 feet tall obelisk located in the middle of The Mall in Washington D.C. To the west you have the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflection Pool, to the east the U.S. Capital Building and directly north, you'll find the White House.
You can visit the Washington Monument, climb to the top and enjoy views of the surrounding Smithsonian Museums, the national monuments and memorials that line The Mall. You can also see the greater D.C. area beyond The Mall. Alternatively, you can simply enjoy seeing the Washington monument from pretty much everywhere in this area of the city.
If you want to take photos of the Washington Monument, best to position yourself in the east side in the morning so that the sun is at your back. Similarly, photos from the west side of the monument are better in the afternoon. If you simply want to take pictures from famous locations, aim for the steps of Lincoln Memorial. From here you can see the Washington Monument as well as the full reflection of this landmark in the Reflection Pool. This is neat spot to find and photograph to take, even when shooting conditions are not ideal.
Note: For an interesting bit of history, when close to the Washington Monument, check out the change in colour in the monument about a third of the way up. This was due to a stoppage in construction in 1854 when government ran out of funds for the project. Continuation of the monument didn't restart until 1877 and made use of materials of a slightly different shade.
Kou Vang
Amazing to see this in person. Great for walking and running in the park. Definitely worth the walk and exploring around the area. Lots of people in the park. I wish I could come back here in the spring for the cherry blossom.
Petar Todorov Makaveev
It is free but you need to wait for the free tickets at 7 am and they usually finish by 7:15 am which makes extremely difficult for the people to visit the insides of the monument. I would prefer ticket booth and line and cost but availability on the spot.
fellsteruk
Got to be one of if not the most impressive site in Washington, really nice monument and enjoyed spending time walking down the mall to here then wondering around snapping pics. Well worth taking this in if you visit
Monika Piazza
This is a lovely monument to visit during the day and at night. We could hang out on the mall all day, but there are so many museums to go to in the same area. When we visited last time (end of july) we weren't allowed to go to the base of this monument....they were making some repairs.
Sachin Thakur
Historic and amazing architecture. Book the tour in advance(online). 360 degree view of the Capital.
J Sauls
Don't get me wrong, the Washington Monument is beautiful during the day. However, my favorite time to explore DC and see it is at night. There's no crowds and it's just beautiful.
None Sone
Our favorite monument around DMV. It's always wonderful and cozy experience.
Tal Elbaz
The monument was great and beautiful although it appeared to be close due to maintenance which a lot of tourists including myself didn’t know.
STACE
So relaxing to walk around this area and see the monument, Abraham Lincoln memorial etc. Wasn’t crowded even on during a thanksgiving visit, but probably due to covid! Highly
recommend visiting the surrounding national museums as well.
Dr.Debasree Biswas
Lots of empty space , with a load of food trucks, lined along. Eat food on the adjunct park. Also public restroom, but there's a huge queue.
Jose Delgado
Awesome building. Love the location and the setup. Very unique. Great view to the Lincoln Memorial from there. Did not have time to go up there, but wont be the last time I come.
John Dabbs
Great views. Nice to go mid day when crowds die off.
Aldes Rivera
Awesome place to visit. Be ready to walk for hours if you want to visit the main attractions.
Mark Forbes
If you are visiting DC as I did in October 2019 then this is a must visit. Took the elevator to the top and got some great views of the city. A great piece of American heritage.
Calvin James
A must visit for any tourist, or anyone who hasn't been up it before. Fantastic viewing towet!
Anil Kumar Surepalli
Wonderful place to go back to history and salute all the heros of American history..nice place for kids to get inspiration from..one side white house and other side afro American museum..everyone should experience the
QuinnFord
It was awesome to see this behemoth monument from across the street. Great view! As well as at night. The monument is especially pretty then.
Carla Ceballos
Best views of this monuments are from far away, walk around the pond/lake and you will appreciate the reflection of it.
CaminoVi
It is the symbol of D.C. Usually the mall is very crowded, but it is beautiful to walk down there. Since some time now there's a construction site on/in the Monument preventing to enter it (usually that's possible and gives you a great view). I recommend seeing the Monument at night!
CHRIS RIGBY
Great area to visit. It is well worth getting tickets to go to the top, educational and an amazing view! Visitors are managed well so you have plenty of room and a great experience, but that makes tickets hard to get. Book online a month in advance or queue up at the monument office 100ft away before 7am to be ‘guaranteed’ tickets for the same day. (Unless the is a group of 50 getting 6 tickets each just before you) The office is in my photo just by the tip of the shadow of the monument, marked restrooms on google maps.
Dylan Soo
An iconic monument along the National Mall area. This structure is a wonder as it is held together with pure weight of the bricks. Seen in many movies such as Marvel's Spiderman Homecoming.
Jeff Downs
Be sure to get tickets in advance. We got some same day, but it was a little stressful with limited time options. You can get them on recreation.gov
Rajesh Verma
Very cool piece of history. The elevator ride is very quick. You get great views of the National Mall from the top. Seeing the stone behind the glass is nice. The State carvings were very cool.
The rangers are very knowledgeable and give you all the time you need to check out the 500 foot and 490 foot levels.
Make sure you get tickets early. They are available 30 days and 1 day in advance online and morning of in person.
ᴛᴀᴊʜᴅʀʏᴀɴᴀ “Taay”
Love the scenery everytime i come here.. so many historic things to view and ponder upon and it’s easy to relax here!
Geoffrey Knobl
Wonderful, but get the free tickets ahead of your day because they go quickly!
Jalitza Vera
Was very crowd because people was celebrating Argentina wons fifa coup
Teddy Bort
An impressive piece of architecture. You can see the whole mall from up their. However the windows are hard to look through.
Nathan Sellers
An impressive monument. It can be seen from many parts of the Capitol. When it was completed, it was the tallest building in the world (until the Eiffel Tower was completed a year later).
Mark Thornton
Such an awesome monument, and an incredible history to go with it. It seems every time I hit DC the monument is closed off for one reason or another so never been able to enter or even get close. The recent earthquake was the latest aide, though it’s supposed to reopen sometime in 2019. Look forward to going back to see the views of DC from the top.
Nick Rivers
So much better up close as opposed to trying to enjoy from the highway 😉 …
Igor Corti
Hands down one of the most iconic monuments in DC.
We just love this area in the National Mall so much that we got up at 4:30 am, to get some nice photos of the sunrise at the monument and they turned out great.
We came back for sunset and took some really nice pictures from the reflecting pool, the orange tones look incredible.
The place was crowded, but that is expected, specially during memorial weekend.
I recommend getting the scooters around the area to move through the various memorials 🛴❤️🌄
Noway
Historical outings are great family fun.Parking can be a bit of a pain, and if you don't enjoy walking that much there are options to rent electric bikes and scooters
TatterCat
Very nice and much bigger than expected! I didn't go inside but it was still very cool to see.
Aloy Despite the Nora
It looks humongous both up close and far away! It is under construction right now for much needed repair and likely won't be open for a year or 2. You can still visit it and get it close. But you can't utilize the elevator or the stairs to go up to the top.
Shaija Denny
Spectacular spot; a must visit place if you are travelling to Washington DC. Early morning is the best as there is less crowd.
Diego Villatoro
It was built to honor George Washington, it have a height of 555 foot located on Washington, D.C.
Sev Nampi
Make sure you take pics from a far and in direct sunlight. It looks white that way. It looks greyish if you look at it from close up and without sunlight. It's a nice moument that looks great close up and from far, not sure what else you'd at the moument.
JP STONE
Great place to visit. Near white house and other national monuments.
Naomi Leonard
Beautiful. Next time I’ll have to check out the inside and that takes you to the top
Susheel Vigrahala
Great place it was Apparently hot yet great climate …
Mr. Burns

Perhaps the most iconic part of the DC skyline. Didn’t get a chance to go up but it’s well maintained and makes for a great jogging destination.
Marian Anghel
Impressive monument. I don't like the fact that they put a fence around it.... Best time to visit is spring and fall
Saroj Bhandari
Amazing Place to walk around and know the history, architects and stories.

Absolutely breath taking, kids totally were impressed. They even asked if Spider man was climbing on the same monument in the movie. Good memory. The security guards were so nice too.

Seen from all over the Capitol, the Washington Monument is one of the most iconic and significant of the cities many monuments. I went to the monument first thing so I could always have a reference point when exploring.
In 2018 there was construction blocking the sidewalk around a portion of the monument and also limiting how close you could get. Thankfully, there are public restrooms around the monument which are cleverly disguised to look like the surrounding buildings.
Be prepared to put on the miles as the White House is over 1 mile away by foot.

Humungous is an understatement. Looks incredibly stunning at night

Iconic monument however you can't get close at the moment because they are renovating the inside. Great local for the cherry blossom kite festival though.

The Washington Monument is a beacon in the George's namesake city, a marker for history, hopes, and ideals. Wherever you are in DC, you can see this monument, always reminding you of where you are and why. The Washington Monument may be the most simple, or better yet understated, but the National Mall simply wouldn't be the National Mall without it.

This was my 1st time in DC super awesome to be able to go up to the monument a little disappointed that we could not go up to the top they were out of tickets for the day
Dana Houston
Had a great person working in front asking people if they had questions. He told us about the tickets to ride up to the top being free... this guy deserves some credit! Great experience. Even better views. They didn't rush us at all. Highly recommended.

The Washington Monument is closed until Spring 2019. The Washington Monument dominates the United States Capital skyline as a symbolic tribute to George Washington's military leadership, humble statesmanship, and Presidential fortitude and wisdom. The Washington Monument, one of Washington, D.C.'s, most iconic structures, as well as its tallest, opened to the public 125 years ago, on October 9, 1888.Just as the Washington Monument is an important symbol for the people of the United States, so also is the aluminum pyramid cap at its apex a symbol for the aluminum industry.
it was adventurous, full of fun and full of knowledge visit.would love to visit again.

Impressive spire. Unfortunately not currently open for visitors inside due to reconstruction, but will be renewed for opening later 2019. Key landmark to visit while in DC... and guess what... NO LINES!

Breathtaking place.

Love spending time and walking around the monument. Huge park right in the middle of the city. There are several places to sit around the park. Water stations included. Parking is available around the park and is free after 8 pm any day.
Michelle Killmon
Get tickets at 10AM the day before you go so you can ride the elevator to the top. It was totally worth it for the amazing views.

The view was beautiful from the top of the Washington Monument. Get your tickets the day before at 10am. Tickets are gone fast.

This is one of my favorite monuments in DC. It’s within walking distance to a lot of other great monuments, fountains, etc. You do have to make reservations in advance if you want to go inside and go to the top, but I think it’s free in certain cases. If you come here, be sure to bring your own water or drinks because the street vendors around here can be a bit over priced.

Amazingly tall...surrounded by lots of grass no one uses but could... Great view of all the monuments from this one location

I always enjoy trips to the DC area. In particular just walking around the mall knowing that people are there from all over this nation and that they have been coming there for many years is heartwarming. All the monuments around the mall are impressive and bring to mind the many conflicts this nation has been through and the men and women who have given their lives so that we can walk there as free people. The Washington monument being the focal point in the center of the mall is a reminder of where we place our trust as it points to the heavens.

Fantastic tour. I think anyone living in USA or want to know more about the country supposed to do once in life.

Scaffolding is down. Thought I'd be unique and take picture of this thing. Glad to see this pyramid lost so much weight. Good for it.

Great tour announcements by the DC National Park Service Volunteer and Rangers. Organized and Professional.
One major suggestion, devote stronger cleaning resources to the lavatories that are utilized by visitors around the globe (particularly the children). Millions spent on the monuments, budget a portion for these facilities as well. Industrial strength cleaning supplies will protect those selfless NPS employees as well.

Not that it needs to be said, but you must visit. Across from it is the Lincoln monument and the view of this structure from there at night is phenomenal.

A must visit for everyone, no matter how young they are. Our 10 and 6 year olds fell in love with this attraction.

Great views. I would say I came on a great day.

Love coming to DC at night time! Got a chance to come look at the cherry blossoms would barely any people around and any traffic. Still looks beautiful at night time and perfect for a stroll.
Umesh Bhatta
Visited many times but last time i visited at night time month of sep 2018 . The most important things for this visit is you can take pictures from Lincoln Memorial with the reflection of very beautiful monument at night.
Sergio Visneskie
Beautiful structure. A lot taller than I thought. Definitely worth the visit, and I suggest walking down along the reflection pool to the Lincoln memorial.

Visiting the Washington Monuments is an awesome experience. It was built to honor brother George Washington, the first U.S. president. It is 555 feet tall. Even walking around at night is great. Make sure you go up to experience US history and admire the city and its surroundings through the N,S,E,W windows.

a non forgettable visit , although it's been 5 years but I still can feel the same . adorable piece of history and a amazing place to capture beautiful pictures as well!
Jialing Liu
This could represent D.C. A lot of ppl check in online at this place. How to take picture with this monument: it is too high to take pictures with it if you get too close. So, highflying recommend you start taking picture before getting close. Like those pics I attached below.
Charles-Stephen Laubhouet
Nice place to go and take pictures , i enjoyed taking pictures for my clients there. even when its cold ! the parking can be tricky as you have to search for a spot in one of the most visited area in the US. but if you have enough stamina & determination you can park for a 1 dollar !

I had so much fun visiting Monument. It's very nice to see DC from here!

Unfortunate that when we came to visit it was cold and the elevator wasn't completed for us to ride. We visited the gift shop to get warm for a few min and to learn more. Fascinating history and cool to see. Hopefully next time were here we can ride to the top.
Matthew Ferguson
Even though the Monument was closed and you couldn't get any closer than the fence surrounding it, it was still a neat place to visit. Talked to some of the people local to D.C. and learned some fun facts about the monument and also how they use the nearby grass areas to host kickball leagues.
Tim Raebig
This thing is tall and pointy, which is pretty cool.

4th of July here is an exceptional time! Lay out on the lawn and relax. Bring a blanket!
Edit: I came here during kite festival and it was so fun! Very busy, so many kids running around all happy! I didn’t see anywhere to buy a kite so you may have to just order one ahead of time. There are so many places to sit and relax here in this park. Cherry blossoms were in full effect! Photos updated as of March 2019.

Cherry Blossom Run. Smashed it!
I'm not an elite runner, (11 minute mile) but gosh, did I have fun! This has got to be one of the most beautiful courses and the runners are friendly.
I Marco Poloed the experience so that my sis could "run" with me.
Found out a few days later that the elite runners couldn't keep their record because the track was short this year. That's a bummer. I run against my previous time and beat it by 7 minutes, so I'm happy.

I enjoyed visiting this historical monument. The availability of escooters for rent was helpful in getting around without wearing out my legs 🦵. …

Very nice museum. Only recently opened 2-3 years ago and renovated.
Chris Gullett
Great experience and definitely a must do! Make sure to be there at 8am to get walk up tickets if you’re unable to reserve tickets via recreation.gov. They do have limited tickets daily and the tickets are released the day PRIOR. So if you plan on going to the top on a Saturday then tickets will be released around 10:30am EST and YOU MUST BE QUICK or be prepared to show up early at the monument center at 8am.

What can you say about the Washington Monument to do it justice? It's breathtaking and has to be seen in person and close up to really appreciate it.
