Reviews of Planet Word
Ashok Patel
Planet Word is different kind of museum - a voice-activated museum in the jungle of museums in Washington DC. A museum about the word and languages through the interactive exhibits, where people of all ages can enjoy and have fun. I saw lots of kids having more fun than adults.
When you enter the museum building, you see a beautiful “Speaking Willow” tree. You hear the murmur in many languages when you pass under the branches of this tree.
When we entered the museum, we were asked to wear the mask at the front desk and to start from third floor and work our way down. The masks are still mandatory inside the museum is little too much. And yes, they make sure you wear the mask.
It is very interesting to know the whole process of how we learn to speak our first language. You learn lots of unique things about the world languages and how English language has picked up the words from different languages.
You can paint with the virtual brush and change the atmosphere in the room. We also used the teleprompter and delivered the famous speech. I saw many kids trying to sing on karaoke.
We need to get the timed entry ticket online, although it is free (with some donation if you are interested). How you are getting attention with some words and the advertisers use them to sell their products was interesting to learn. Must visit attraction in Washington DC.

This place is so cool. I took my teenage Godson and he had a blast. There are a ton of interactive stations throughout the museum as well as a recording studio for people of any age to test their public speaking skills… for just fun of course. I highly recommend this activity for all ages. Proof of identification and vaccination are required along with masks. You may visit online to reserve free tickets.

Absolutely worth a visit. So interesting! Three levels of interactive exhibits to play with. Reservations and three hours to visit recommended. The cost of the museum is free but don’t be shy to donate to help keep it functioning! Staff are lovely. Lots of parking options nearby and collocated with a good restaurant called Immigrant Food. Makes for a really fun afternoon and it’s a nice change from the usual. Perfect for a rainy day as it is all inside. Enjoy!

Well put together, spaced out, fun and educational!
staff are friendly and helpful.
There aren’t many exhibits, but the ones there are very interactive and 2 hours will fly by as you explore.
Only thing I’ll say is it was a bit warm inside.

Museum is free with optional donation. The building is stunning in Victorian brick and tile. They’ve done an admirable job with a somewhat vague premise. As I moved through the impressive exhibits, I began to wonder if this museum is a tax shelter for the wealthy as well as an educational experience. Lots of money was poured into the tech driven galleries. People seemed engaged and awed by the interactivity and bright lights. Each area touched briefly on a topic that could support a lifetime of research. Hence the sense that something was missing.
Alex Nicholes
This was so much more fun than expected!!!! It was really informative, thought provoking, and inclusive. One of the most interactive museums I've been to and appropriate for all ages. Adults and kids alike will find things to interest them.

If you have kids or just love books and language you must visit. Beautiful building fantastic interactive exhibits. Really thoughtful content. Don't miss the little short story generator choose a genre and it will print a 'receipt' with a short story to take home. Beautiful gifts in the shop too. 8/22 timed entry booked in advance or at the door online.

This museum was simply amazing and so fun. We reserved our tickets online and was so easy to check in upon arrival. So many different interactive engaging activities, rooms and 3 floors of knowledge. Will definitely recommend for families. Perfect for our Sunday Funday Activity.

Not your typical museum — super interactive & automated (think voice-activated type) exhibits. Overall it was a pretty interesting, cool, and engaging experience although most of it was focused on very basic language facts. Just seemed it didn’t go deep at all into the history or study of “language”, and you can tell that the aesthetic is the number one priority. Good for kids and adults but I’d imagine that someone like an experienced writer, for example, would quickly become bored. I’d suggest going with at least another person just because some of the activities/exhibits are made for two. Reservations are recommended; walk-ins are welcome but aren’t admitted once capacity is reached. NOTE masks are still required for all as of July 2022.

Fantastic place that feels more like a pop up event than a museum. Every exhibit is interactive and in a fun, educational way, rather than gimmicky. Our whole family enjoyed most exhibits immensely especially the reading room. Very neat uses of technology.
Jessica Fontana
This museum was so fun and really interesting. Pretty much every exhibit was interactive. There's a large exhibit teaching you about different languages, a feature about comedy, a karaoke room, and an interactive show with a light up word wall. Highly recommend to anyone in the DC area. I spent about 2-2.5 hours there and could have stayed much longer. Recommend going with a friend because there's one exhibit that requires 2 people for the activity.
Sandy Avery
A great family experience - especially families of readers. It is interactive. Even little ones will find the colors and exhibits visually interesting. Individuals may have less fun since many of the experiences are more fun with a friend. Eat at Immigrant Food if you have time
Jessie Ryan-Smith
Fantastic museum, especially given it's free! Lots of activities and interesting exhibits.
I think the Spoken World room could have been more focused on the languages themselves (most just seemed to be teaching you how to say different phrases rather than providing context or info about what makes them unique).
Where do words come from was absolutely one of my favorite parts of the museum. It was funny, interesting, engaging and unique!
I also really loved the library. Lots of hiddel surprises throughout!
Nala B
Amazing! It was interactive, fun, and informative! Also free. It won’t take you long to go through it but it does have a lot going on. I went here with my 3 and 6 years old nieces and they loved it. There’s an included photo booth so you can get plenty cute pics. I don’t wanna spoil it all for you but it deserves a shot.
Adriana Laser
This was an unexpected gem. We hadn't planned on this, hadn't heard of it, but luckily did while we were there & was able to get in towards the end if the day on a Sunday without reserving in advance (I don't recommend testing your luck if you have a chance to reserve ahead!). This was so neat and interactive with exhibits about language, books that magically come alive, a karaoke room, a "paint" with different styles room, and one of my favorites was the performance in the room about English words!
Sylvia Lin
Free with optional donation. Self-guided tour; they suggested to start from 3rd floor and working the way down. The 3rd floor the most interesting exhibit; lots of speaking and interactive pads and microphones. The 2nd floor has karaoke, friends interactions (tellling joke, guess a phrase, photo booth, etc). 1-2 hours stay.
Kristin Grant
We were dining and were drawn to the "sculpture" across the street. We had no idea that it was a museum. My husband and I both have a love of words. The experience was so much fun. The hands-on activities built community engagement with other museum goers. A great way to spend a couple of hours.
Kapre Carter
I recommend this to anyone with kids or without kids. A really nice fun yet knowledgeable place to come to. When you walk in there this huge tree that talks to you when you speak to it. Now if you are wondering about being safe then the worries are over. When you come in they will give you stylus pins so you won't have to touch anything and also they have sanitizing stations every where. Just check out these amazing pictures. Like I said this place is AMAZING
Amanda Champion
This exhibit is absolutely wonderful! If you appreciate words, languages, and interactive exhibits, then this one is a must-see. The staff is absolutely wonderful and the gift shop has many treasures.
Rivka Kramer
This place is amazing! Who knew you could create so many activities with words! Great for all ages and stages. Many interactive displays and things to do. Right across the street from a circulator stop (yellow), so easy to get to. And it's free!
LP
Interactive and informative. Definitely angled towards grade school guests but interesting and fun for anyone.
The best parts of planet word is the tree out front with over 300 languages that you can hear playing from the branches activated by voice. And the restaurant that angles it’s menu on other cultures and highlighting causes that part of the profits go to and you can donate to

Photographing a wedding at Planet Word in D.C. was a totally unique experience. The museum, which is dedicated to language and words, provided a stunning and unconventional setting for the couple's special day. We started the day with getting ready shots in a nearby hotel. Later, we took advantage of the museum's beautiful galleries and exhibits for some, creative, romantic and intimate shots of the couple. Planet Word is a unique and beautiful venue for a wedding. It was an honor to document such a special moment! ig @iamthesam
Danielle Holmes
Cool museum focusing on words and the origins of languages. The exhibits are interactive and easy to use. It’s kid friendly and family friendly. Parking is limited so arrive early. Admission is free but tickets are required.
Renana Fox
Really interesting museum with tons of interactive exhibits. I went with my 3rd grade students and they loved it. Their favorite room was what they dubbed the "karaoke room" that focused on poetic lyric use but let you sing along into microphones.
Zerlina Lin
A great interactive museum. Some exhibits are voice activated. Really cool place to learn about linguistic and everything around it.
Highly recommend doing the Lexicon Lane. I personally don’t do much puzzle but this was really creative and cool how they put together world base puzzles.
Austin Graff
An off-the-National-Mall museum that charges (suggested donation) for tickets is suspect in a city full of world-class, free museums. Despite the stigma, Planet Word Museum is a must-visit while in Washington, D.C. The museum takes a potentially dry subject like language and brings it to life. Here's why you should visit:
1) Exhibits: The experience starts before you open the doors into the museum. In the outdoor plaza near the entrance is Speaking Willow Tree. Stand under it and hear hundreds of different languages.
Move inside, let the staff scan your ticket (most visitors reserve a pass online, but they do accept walk-ins at the top of every half hour) and take the library-designed elevator (or stairs) to start the inside exhibits from the third floor.
The exhibits are very interactive using screens and digital art to tell the story of language- how we form words, spoken word, etc. A few highlights:
The Spoken Word- iPads surround a lit globe with speakers from around the world on the screens teaching you their language (Russian, Turkish, Vietnamese, etc.).
The Library- a stunningly-designed library with all types of books is on the second floor. Pick out a book and bring it to the long table to learn more about it through digital art. Find the hidden poetry nook somewhere in the library.
Joking Around- A large room teaching you about the art of humor. You can even play a humor game with a partner to see who has a strong joke game.
I'm Sold!- on the first floor is a little room teaching you how writers come up with ad copy. A quick tests your knowledge as you walk through a little maze.
There are many other interactive exhibits throughout the museum from a photo booth to a recording studio to an area where you can do karaoke. It's a perfect museum for children!
2) Space: The museum is inside a restored 1869 Franklin School in downtown D.C. Designed by the same man behind the Smithsonian Castle, Adolf Cluss, it was one of eight public schools built in the city to use a standardized curriculum, setting the stage for education reform in the country. Eleven years later, inventor Alexander Graham Bell tested his first wireless communication from the Franklin School. Fast forward a few decades, and the Franklin School housed a homeless shelter before becoming Planet Word. The museum tried to maintain many of the original floors and design.
3) Location: It's just off newly renovated Franklin Square Park in downtown D.C. close to the McPherson Square Metro and Metro Center Stations. Because of its location, it's easy to get to- by Capital Bikeshare, walking, etc. If you're hungry, Immigrant Food is inside the museum as well as other great spots like- The Best Sandwich Shop, Slipstream and Michele's.
4) Staff: The entire staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. They are throughout the museum to help guide you and answer any questions.
5) Accessibility: They incorporate sign into their exhibits and is wheelchair accessible.
6) Price: When you reserve your ticket online, you can give a suggested donation between $0-$15. If you can afford it, give $15. Compared to other museums in the country, it's a reasonable price. If you can't afford it, you can opt to pay nothing, making it accessible for all income levels.
7) Gift Shop: On the bottom floor behind the main lobby is a gift shop with a diverse selection of books, D.C.-centric goods and language-centric clothing. For example, you can buy a Scrabble-designed purse. Budget at least 15 minutes to brose the gift shop.
If you plan to visit, reserve a ticket online. Note that it's open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday only.

What’s not to love about a museum dedicated to Words and Language?? Thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Bummed the VR room was closed, but we loved all of the exhibits we were able to see-particularly the library with the dioramas and reading table! We will return!
Abi M.
This is a unique museum with interactive fun displays that keeps you busy throughout your visit. They recommend 1-1/2 hour to visit the 3 floors of display. The top two floors of the building is not open to visitors. There is no entry fee but donations are recommended. Adults and kids would enjoy the displays. There is a gift shop on the first floor.
There are fun things in every turn, the inside of the elevator looks like a library, there's a hidden door in the middle of a bookshelf wall.
The real gem here is the building itself. This was the old Franklin School which was constructed between 1865 and 1868. The building was saved from the demolition ball and brought back to life for this project.
Janay McIntosh
This is a WONDERFUL museum. A great place to learn new things and it’s very interactive. I like that the staff give you styluses to use on the touch displays to limit the spread the germs. Highly recommend for young adults. Kids will like this too but may get bored quickly and want to move room to room as my niece did. Admission is free which is amazing! A must see in DC.
Jeff Gelber
Went with my nearly 6 year old and her friend and they loved it. All of the exhibits are interactive with elements for kids and adults. Highly recommend.
Lloyd J
We attended a Gala in the evening & the rooftop view was worth it. The family and I will make this spot must visit. The museum was very family friendly. The talking tree was an unexpected surprise!
Sarah Ebeling
This was one of our family’s DC favorites. It’s ultra chic, high-tech, and artistic yet full of LOTS of linguistic education presented in a relevant, fun, hilarious way. Books come alive. Words are “painted.” Speech, joke, and writing strategies explained using examples we all know and love. Sing the songs you know by heart and learn why we remember every lyric. Give a speech by JFK, Oprah or Mufasa using a teleprompter. You’ll think about language in an entirely new way after visiting. Can’t recommend highly enough!
Marc Laplante
Exceeded expectations! A great balance of learning and interactive multimedia. I'm not a big museum person, so I expected to stay 30min, but ended up visiting for 1h45min. Also great for kids, especially of the reading age and up.
Stacy Walker
Really really fun and interactive, great for kids and adults! Don't be afraid of the karaoke room, and definitely hit the photo booth! Also very covid safe 😷
Stephanie Cheng
Brought my two boys (6 & 4), and we all had a blast. We are a family of word and book lovers, so this was great for all of us. Exhibits were very interactive. The spaces were clean, bright, interesting to look at.
There was a photo booth that gave you SAT words to act out. We got "irascible" and "stupefied." And my 6yo was trying out the words in real life by the end of the day.
Highly recommend for the language/word/book nerds out there. And recommend for everyone else cuz it's just fun and thoughtful.
Max Heiliger
As a former linguist, it's super easy to recommend this place. It is clearly designed with children 8+ in mind, but the experience is well worth it to adults who want to learn how we shape language and how it shapes us in turn.
All exhibits are delightfully interactive and really bring out your inner child.
My friend said that basically everyone visitibg DC should go at least once, and at 2-3 hours visitation time and completely free entry, I have to agree.
Irene Williams
This museum is INCREDIBLE! I would highly recommend to anyone, not just language enthusiasts. It's highly interactive and teaches you everything from words in other languages in the global languages room to how to analyze song lyrics in the karaoke room. I would say it's more geared towards adults but there are some elements kids could enjoy. Older elementary at least. Free street Parking was fairly easy to find on a Sunday morning. Free admission, but I'd definitely recommend donating or at least buying something in the gift shop. We spent a solid morning here. I will be back!
Stephen Balza
Cool place. We had not heard of this place and it is off the beaten path. It is relatively small which was nice after navigating a couple of the massive Smithsonians.
I was with two college students and they both had enjoyed it as much as I did. Several young families were there and the little children were also kept interested by the engaging rooms.

I never knew this was so close. Invited by ah friend... I am so glad I said, Yes! Cheesy, I know, but there is something SOO empowering when you are able to have fun while learning! My #ᑕᕼOOᔕEᕼᗩᑭᑭY

Amazing! This exhibit was an interactive experience! As a life long lover of words, I am their target audience. Regardless, I do highly recommend this for everyone, especially curious kids. There are so many fun and interactive experiences throughout the museum, and they are made pertinent and interesting in today's world. Exhibits cover everything from the poetry of songwriting to the double speak of advertisements. Personal highlights were the language tree out front, the stunning reading room, and the SAT word photo booth! My only complaint would be that the museum is still new and lacking a few exhibits - but I guess that just gives me an excuse to have to check it out again!
Karin E
Great experience with lots of interactive games and activities. The museum is clean, well organized and educative.
Elena Lev
This was an amazing experience! Extremely interactive and educational. Fun for all ages. Some of my favorite exhibits were the languages from around the world and the trivia game about where English words come from.
Also it’s very COVID-safe still— masks are mandatory and lots of hand sanitizer available.
Celesta Tow
Local Washingtonian- I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and this is our favorite museum hands down.
ADHD mama and kids all enjoy. So much to look at and learn and ENGAGE with, but not in an overstimulated way.
Karaoke- photo booth- secret poetry nook- the list goes on!
Bre Waller
This may be my favorite museum in DC. Everything was so well put together. In every room, there was something that appealed to every age group. I loved it. The children loved it. We'll definitely be going back many times.
Carolyn Grant
Ok ,so I heard about this place during lock down on @nbc4 . Today I went there for a job interview ♡Hope I get it♡.
That's beside the point this place is amazing we have lots of museums in Washington DC, but this is one of the best ones that you have to go to anyone Visiting DC, or if you live here. This is not part of the Smithsonians, It's better SORRY guys. This is an interactive word museum. I was They're having so much fun I forgot I had to go home .Every part of this museum is interactive and plus they have a restaurant, a real restaurant. Drop your kids off and go have something to drink, can't get better than that. They have a cool gift shop. If you will ever in DC you have to check out Planet Word. I will be back there.. Great spot for dates.
RedHeaded Stepchild
One of the best interactive and fun museums that have come out lately. Being an English Teacher , I loved every exhibit it had to offer. Something for everyone !
Albina
For a linguist this museum is like a Disneyland. The content of the exhibitions is so thought through, entertaining, educational and multi media. I was in awe the entire time I was there. If you don't know what linguistics is this is a great way to learn about the discipline. I am sure that after visiting this place you would want to become a linguist.
Craig D. Rice
We thoroughly enjoyed our four hours at Planet Word. We were greeted warmly by the staff and given a quick overview of the museum and how to get the best experience out of it. We took our time and still felt there was more we could have explored. The Spoken World exhibit is fantastic, interactive, educational, and fun. The exhibits were professionally done, and many, including the interviews and stories were thought-provoking. Each exhibit covered different aspects of language in unique ways. We went into the museum thinking it was more traditional with artifacts and collections, but Planet Word is truly something special: engaging, inclusive, and educational -- and made great use of interactive technologies. Suitable for everyone.
Abraham Walker
Interactive experience for the entire family. My 12 and 14 year old boys loved the word wall presentation.
You can't beat the price but parking 🅿 will be an issue.
Harper Leary
A special kind of museum. Unlike anywhere I’ve been before. Super interactive and interesting. Would absolutely recommend over most of the other busy tourist-y museums.
Tynin Fries
Really fun museum for people of all ages! We had a blast and were super impressed! The puzzle room is a fun activity too!
Douglas Figueroa
Interesting museum, with different interactive attractions. It's nearby the national mall. Entrance is free but reserving a ticket before going is recommended.
Beng Reyes
Amazing, immersive educational experience! If you love to read or want to learn more about the world through languages, then this is the right place for you! The secret room in the library was my favorite- you'll have classic poetry read to you! Truly a great addition to DC, and a must for librarians, educators and students.
Carlee Bird
Such a fun and interactive museum. Loved the miniatures and art in bookcase room the most.
Gerum Haile Lincoln
One of the best museums in Washington DC. This museum ain't too big, but it packs a punch. You get to explore each room that tells a fascinating tale about languages. You could spend a very long time just in one room squeezing out all the info, quizzes, and puzzles that each room offers.
There are very entertaining interactive exhibits of many forms: touchscreens, exhibits where you talk to solve puzzles. This place pretty much has you using all your senses.
Overall this place was very fun, informative, and modern. Definitely worth a go if you're in DC!
Ahmad Karimi
Amazing, interactive exhibits at this museum that blew our minds. We tried to take our nephew to the kids section at the Library of Congress, but they closed earlier than we thought. We came to Planet Word instead and it was way cooler than we thought. Kids and adults will find the exhibits both fun and educational, a rarity for a museum about words!
Cristin Harber
An immersive word adventure that kids of all ages and adults will absolutely love.
Reserve tickets ahead of time but walk-ups will mostly be available.
Start on the third floor and work your way down. Plan to take your time. There is something to look at everywhere: walls, ceiling, columns, etc.
Planet Word provides you with a stylus for the many interactive exhibits. Plenty of space and hand sanitizer. Masks are required, and I only saw one person who had theirs half-on. Staff quietly asked him to pull it over his nose. 👍 Which he did, no problem.
There are games, a secret room, a library that comes to life when you select books, and places to record your thoughts.
Honestly, it was an amazing experience, and I plan to go again without the kids just to soak it up again.
Joanne Woo
I absolutely love this museum to no end. Bring all your friends, family and dates here. It won't disappoint. They added a photobooth that's really fun and different since the last time I was here!
Ian Patrick
This is one of the most interactive, engaging museums our family has seen. It was really interesting for adults and kids alike. Their exhibits are a lot of fun and super insightful about language. It's much better than most museums where you just walk around and look at stuff.
Benjamin Kalish
This is a great museum focused on language. It has lots of interactive exhibits for kids of all ages. My 8 year old especially loved the third floor exhibit called weird wall.
Parking is available at numerous pay garages nearby. It is also convenient to various public transit options.
Bring the kids and have fun
Trent Allen
Surprisingly fun. We started with an escape room like experience which could use a little tweaking and repair. The exhibits are all experiential and offer engaging ways to learn about language and have fun.
J.Y. W.
Plane Word makes learning about the multitude of languages extraordinary! So glad my family and I decided to go. They literally had to tell us to leave...in a very pleasant way. 😁😁
Krupa Patel
This museum is one of our new favorites. We went with several small children and had a great experience. The exhibits were fun and engaging, so there was plenty for us all to learn and discover about the history of words, language, meaning, and connection. It was easy to reserve timed tickets in advance, and there was no wait time. This museum is a hidden gem and we will certainly be returning for more.
Dayana Hudson
Planet Word is now my favorite museum in DC! It covered language in general, development, usage (meaning, jokes, songs, marketing), and different languages around the world.
The exhibits were highly interactive and engaging. Fun for all ages!
Admission is free, but a $15 donation per person is encouraged to keep the museum going. You can reserve passes ahead of time, and there are walk up passes available every hour on each half hour (10:30, 11:30, etc) pending availability.
Alison Dowling
What a fantastic new museum! Great for kids, but adults could spend hours here too. Very accessible and inexpensive!
elvira rozenfeld
It was interesting and very interactive experience. You must check out their elevator -it's amazing 🤩
Betty Belanus
fun but some of the interactives seemed broken or delayed in response/not intuitive. Loved the room where you "interact" with people telling you about their languages.
Audrey McKnight
THE BEST MUSEUM IN DC. You have to buy tickets for a specific time, but it's worth it because it's not overcrowded so everyone gets to interact with each unique piece of tech. So many innovative ways to teach things. collegiates and kids alike were enjoying themselves.
So many cool secrets. You can tell a lot of smart people worked on this place.
Michael
What an amazing new museum that's recently reopened. A lot of the big free museums are still closed due to covid, but this one is well worth the entrance fee. It's an interactive museum about language. You'll get to hear a lot of languages in the world room. The Word Wall was a lot of fun. The karaoke poetry exhibit and the jokes exhibit were a refreshing experience. Would love to go back again.
Samarth Prakash
Amazed at the level of information and technology applied in this museum. The interactive modules were just phenomenal
Elisa Kranwinkel
Wonderful place to take the family. They have a karaoke room thats lots of fun!
Robert Weinstein
A very engaging experience with words lots of fun stuff, extremely well done exhibits
Maia Rodriguez
Tucked away in downtown DC, a few blocks north of the mall, is the brilliant, fascinating, interactive museum called Planet Word. You can easily grab a pass online. I took my kids here in May of 2021, and they were accepting both online passes and walk ins. Here's what you need to know:
• There are 3 levels. Start at the top and work your way down. If you can, get there as close as you can to opening. You'll have less traffic.
•This is a smaller museum, but how fast you go through it depends on how much you choose to interact with the displays. It took us about an hour 1/2 with myself, a 13 and 10 year old. I honestly would have stayed longer because I am fascinated by language. But my kids were not disappointed. They really loved it.
•Upon entry, go to the front desk to check in. They'll give you a pen with a round tip. You'll use this soft tip to tap on and activate the displays.
•Our personal favorite room was the interactive word show where you could speak into a microphone. But there was also a karaoke room, a world language room, a library with cool lighting and mirrors, and a joke room.
•Parking on the street can be tricky, but there are plenty of nearby parking garages. If you have the parking panda app, you can reserve a spot ahead of time. Otherwise, if you're near a metro, you can just use that.
Loved this museum and would definitely go back!
Rene Anderson
Great place in reference to learning through interactive venues by listening, reading, participating, visuals, speaking, touching and being able to express through talking
Evelyn Valdez
This is now my second time going to Planet Word, and I feel like I had more fun each time! I did one of the cases on lexicon Lane, the jukebox hero, and it was so fun, deciphering clues, and trying to crack the case with friends! The staff is so welcoming, professional, friendly, and hands-on. I went on Veterans Day this time and there were so many elementary school kids there on a field trip, but that was the best part, because we were with the students in the karaoke room, and we got to sing songs together with the kids, we shared the standing microphones and had a blast!
Amber James
A wonderfully unique and interactive museum! I learned a lot and had a blast! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about words and language. It took us about 2 hours to get through the entire museum!
Melody Schwarting
We had a wonderful time exploring this inviting and stimulating museum! Everyone on staff had contagious joy, the displays were very high quality, and the material was engagingly presented. The gift shop is not to be missed for word nerds like myself. A truly glorious experience!
Jennifer Firneno
Such a cool museum. Completely--and very effectively-- interactive in a way that's appropriate for all ages. Eat at the Cafe, it's outstanding, really fun, and a destination in and of itself. I'll definitely be back to both next time I'm in dc
Kirsten Moy
Highly engaging, interactive modern museum on language and the written word. You can see pretty much everything within 90 minutes. Don't miss the secret bookshelf-door in the library that opens up into a poetry room!
Donna Weinstein
Took 8- year old granddaughter and we both enjoyed the museum. Nice variety of exhibits. Some were too advanced for her but plenty were perfect for her interests and ability.
Laura Kunkel
The first visit, I couldn’t miss how interactive the museum is. Each time we go back, I realize how skilled it is at teaching every age group at once. It touches on so many parts of language: speech, poetry, dialect, vocabulary, jokes, etymology, comparisons, advertising. Highly recommend.
Erin Cowles
My kids range in age from preschool to 8th grade, & it can be really hard to find activities that keep everyone happy, but Planet Word did it. We had a blast today. It is really interactive & creatively presented, & my kids learned a lot about language from it. I’d say their favorites were the word wall protection thing, painting with adjectives, the karaoke room, & the puzzle box we did in Lexicon Lane (and can I say that it was great that they had coloring pages & magnetic puzzles there to keep my preschooler happy when he lost interest in the puzzle box his siblings were doing?). We recommend it!
Karen V
Delightful experience about language/words and engaging, impactful exhibits took us through its use in prose, music, literature, persuasion, public speaking, humor, and more. Fun and interesting! Reasonable in time and density of information.
Alice Wang
DC is filled with fantastic, well-curated/well-planned, and free museums. Planet Word is one of those! A relatively newer museum in the District (opened in October 2020), Planet Word is known as the museum "where language comes to life." An immersive language, voice-activated, and interactive experience that is perfect for families and people of all ages.
While free (suggestion $15 donation), it's recommended to reserve a pass. Passes are released at 10 a.m. on the first of each month for the month following. Daily walk-in passes are available on the half hour of every hour starting at 10:30 a.m.
After checking in, the staff will recommend you start on the 3rd floor and make your way down to the first. Exhibits on the 3rd floor include First Words, Where Do Words Come From?, the Spoken World, and Lexicon Lane. Lexicon Lane is a puzzle-solving experience that costs $20/case. Exhibits on the 2nd floor include Unlock the Music, Joking Around, Word Worlds, the Schwarzman Family Library, and Lend Me Your Ears. Finally, exhibits on the 1st floor include I'm Sold! and Words Matter. The Immigrant Food + Restaurant is also located on the first floor, as well as the gift shop and Franklin School Historical Exhibit.
My favorite exhibits were the Where Do Words Come From? (so interactive and creative), Spoken World (you can experience languages around the world), Unlock the Music (so much fun hearing people karaoke), the Library (there's a hidden door to a poetry nook!), and I'm Sold!. However, I thought all the exhibits were well-planned and thoughtfully created. It's such a wonderful family-friendly museum experience. My husband and I very much enjoyed our time in the museum, and I'd recommend checking out Planet Word to visitors and residents alike!
Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
Fun fact: In 1880, Alexander Graham Bell made his first successful transmission of a “photophone” message from the rooftop of the Franklin School to his lab on L Street.

Definitely recommend for people who are into books. You’ll get a whole new level of experience
April at Bair Ink
It’s fresh and innovative and really encourages visitors to participate not just look at displays. Give it try!
Harleen Sahni
This museum is alright, but a bit gimmicky. You can spend 1 to 2 hours there. It's a decent place to go with school aged children.
Eunji Kim
Love this museum! So many activities! Totally worth it! The best museum ever in D.C!
I'm so lucky that I visited there while I stay in DC.
Rafael Meneses
Wonderful museum. Engaging, interactive, and friendly for all ages. One of our favorite stops in our trip to DC.
Latrice Stevenson
Interactive, fun, and a low risk high reward environment for anyone of any age to engage with literacy. I always enjoy going alone or with students.
Angels Natal
Great museum to learn about language and languages!
Jonathan Miller
We're big fans of this place. We both work in comms and marketing, and I have a writing degree, so. My only complaint is that I wish some of the exhibits would take a deeper dive into linguistics and/or psychology.
Jane L
What a fun museum! I visited at 10am on a Friday. There were probably a dozen other people, so it was quite easy to space out and see everything. There were a few technical glitches and some displays were not working but this will all improve with time. It's still a great time to visit.
COVID safety precautions: capacity is limited, masks are required, there are sanitizers throughout, you can borrow a stylus when you arrive to touch the screens, and you can use your own headphones on most installations. I might have missed this but I think they should also have you agree to a list of conditions when you get your passes online, ie: you do not feel sick, have a temperature, etc. The passes are free and released on a rolling basis. I did not receive a confirmation so take a screenshot just in case. I don't think you actually need a confirmation email but if you want one, just DM them on social media.
The entire museum is digitally interactive. It takes some time and patience to interact with the exhibits. If you're like me and have a constant pull from your phone to multitask just try to focus and turn that mode of your brain off. I wound up spending an hour and 45 min and didn't even see everything!
The exhibits have speech recognition AI that is still learning. It was difficult to speak loud enough through a mask in a room with other people talking for it to hear me but you can always just click buttons to move to the next screen.
An unexpected high point of my visit was the music room that has a karaoke set up. I am not an extrovert or musically inclined and had a great time singing (socially distanced) with strangers. If you're not paying attention you could miss the educational explanations of song structure and elements of hooks and such but you will be entertained for sure! It was such a nice release from being quarantined for so long!
I hope in the future they offer language classes and an exhibit on preserving endangered languages, but right now they're doing great and the experience is really different from any other museum.
Madison Brumbaugh
So much fun! I was a linguistics major in college and now work as a speech-language pathologist, so Planet Word was right up my alley. I love how accessible and interactive the museum experience is, and all of the rooms are fantastic! I was constantly “wow”-ing at the creative activities and just general use of space. As an adult visitor, it was very fun, and despite my background, I learned a lot of new things!
Tyler Harris
I hate telling people about this because it seems such a hidden gem. This might be my favorite museum in DC (ok, top 3 anyway). This museum is a bit smaller than many of the other Smithsonians, but it is truly at 21st exhibition. The learning and wondering is completely interactive. They use pop culture to relate concepts to those seen all around us. The content is enough to captivate almost anyone for 1.5 hours but not so overwhelming it becomes daunting. Phenomenal spot.
Guillaume Faustin
Amazing experience ! Came for the kids and discovered a World of words. Keeps the kids entertained and the parents amazed. And congrats to the staff so welcoming. Thanks for this moment
Will Edwards
So much interactive fun! I recommend starting at top floor and working your way down(there are elevators). Bathrooms are available on each floor and ground floor has lockers for storage. My favorite part was the big word wall on the top floor(pictured).
Howard Beckwith
This was a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of Planet Word and am glad I came across it during my search for museums in the area.
This is an interactive , self guided experience that is great for children and adults alike. The exhibits were entertaining and informative - providing a new appreciation for the variety and complexity of language and communication in an engaging way.
It was a highlight during a day spent exploring DC. Easy to get to and well worth the visit.
Sara Barger
Very fun, interactive museum. Highly recommend doing Lexicon Lane.
johansen2004
Fun place. Even more fun that it is free for the public, however, of you want you can donate. It's very clean and has people to guide you through this fun interactive place.
Kerri Redding
Language is both the sword and shield we use between and among us. Planet Word is a delightfully immersive multilingual exploration of words, language and how it shapes our identities and mis/understanding of one another. This is a must for everyone involved in education, communication and learning to be a better human. Planet Word transports us!
Li Ding
What a cool and high-tech place! I am so glad I found it on the map and appreciated all the reviews that helped me to make the decision. My 2 children (10 and 14) thoroughly enjoyed it too.
The museum use interactive activities to explain the importance of words and languages. You can talk to a microphone to activate various scenes, you can sing a karaoke, you can bring books to life (my favorite), and you can test your knowledge by answering questions.
The entire museum occupies 3 stories. You take an elevator up to the 3rd floor and work down. It is not a big museum and I'd say 1 hour would be good. We were in the first to enter the museum on a weekday so not very crowded.
sidney juarez
The location is perfece and quite , there's easy street parking. The museum itself was clean for the most part staff is friendly. Would recommend to everyone !
Lauren Scott
I'll be back! Informative, interactive museum with kid-friendly activities (interesting for adults too). Might be hard to experience the exhibits fully when crowded, but it seems like they keep admission under control.
Jennifer McNerney
Interesting, but not worth the $15 donation they ask for. Depends on what your interests are if a really great experience. I felt like it could have been more interesting and that they could beef it up. Think it is not great for young kids, though it says good for 7 years old and up. I was a bit disappointed in it
Leigh August
This is a next generation museum, highly interactive using hi-tech. You start from 3rd floor and going down. There are rooms dedicated to jokes, lyrics, ads, etc. Highly recommended.
Natalie Semmes
Wow - everyone should visit Planet Word. The the most imaginative concept for a museum about language - super engaging, fun, insightful and thought provoking!
Dierric Rogers
Definitely worth a trip if you are visiting D.C. I got the opportunity to go there as part of a conference and it was by far one of my favorite memories from my trip.
M R
Such a cool place! It doesn’t matter your age you will have a lot of fun while learning so many things! Highly recommended, it is a must do if you visit DC.
Cora K
OH MY GOD this museum was amazing!!!! The interactive element was so fun and I just love how informative it was! My favorite room was the library abd I 600% recommend coming!
Spongeflower
The exhibits appeal to both children and adults. Great one-of-a-kind museum, and even as a linguistics nerd, I was decently impressed. As an adult, I would not be willing to pay for admission, but it's actually free.
Harmoni Hicks
Another DC gem. This FREE interactive museum is cool for school age age children, especially 4th and 5th graders but just as cool young adults and older. My nephew (33) and I (55) definitely enjoyed Planet word. We were even reminded what words are considered onomatopoeias. Please give a donation to help maintain the upkeep. Every donation helps!!
Carolyn Kramer
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Our kids - ages 11, 10, 4 and 2 - all loved this museum. We spent 2.5 h there and had to pull them away at the end. Well worth the visit!
Karli Ware
An aesthetic thoughtfully produced interactive museum.
I left with a heightened appreciation for the power of language , the words themselves and the concepts they communicate.
A refreshing experience.
ayanna worthy
The kids went here for a friend’s birthday ( this is where she ask to go for her 13th birthday 🥳) they had a wonderful time.. we are going back for a part two cause they had to leave early cause we had another birthday party to go to. But they loved it here.
Derrick
Very interesting place, learned a lot about when language & words started
Kory Kirk
Really nice museum, it was my first time going. I first heard about it today honestly. Stopped by and I was just so pleasantly surprised.
Jennifer L
What an experience! My nerd side was tingling with excitement! Take your kids! Take yourself! I really enjoyed all the different ways to learn.
deborah nelson
Such a great discovery, gem of an innovative concept/modern museum...so very entertaining, engaging and interactive. Bonus restaurant attached, equally cool, global, worldly, called Immigrant Food!🤗🌎💜 …
Goldtong
Very neat place! Simple but intellectual
Parker Kelley
A great & interactive museum. It is a must see when visiting DC. Tickets are free- buy online and reserve your time slot ahead of time.
Daniela Ochoa Gonzalez
Beyond words, a must and a favorite from now on!
Aaron Tsay
It was just okay. It did not live up to the hype. And we probably shouldn't have started at the top floor with the word wall as that was the near peak of the experience as it descended into basic interactive activities and finally a dead cat bounce to the corporate slogans and ads exhibit.
Fitsum Tesfaye Habtemariam
As a linguist, l enjoyed it most with my family & friends!
Highly recommend to visit the interactive branding, music, library, language, words photobooth & beyond :)
Leo Kot
Fantastic Museum where you can learn loads about languages and literature. I don't recommend for very young children - everything is rather text based.
L. B.
A fun museum! Hidden gem in DC with neat, interactive, and thought provoking exhibits. Fun and interesting for adults but also great for kids, even our preschoolers loved it. The staff is extremely friendly and the museum itself is very clean and spacious. We didn’t feel crowded or rushed anywhere. If you’re local, add this to your list of fun things to do!
Rebekah Hickson
Planet Word is pretty cool! I do recommend reserving tickets online in advance. There is no cost but a recommended donation of $15 per person. They DID require proof of vaccination and face masks for all guests, which was great.
For the museum itself, it's quite interactive. I thought they would have stylus for each guest because there were a lot of touch screens throughout but they did have regularly played hand sanitizing stations. The content is appropriate for all ages but the presentation seems geared towards kids and families and casual museum goers. It was really nice and you could easily spend multiple hours there.
arrion kong
We had so much fun learning about language. It was so interactive from the motion light tree outside to the books coming alive in the library. They also have a puzzle room on the third floor called Lexicon Lane. It is an additional $20, but if you like escape rooms, you will enjoy these puzzles. They even have a room with karaoke, why couldn't English class in school be this fun.
Andi Gunther
Went here yesterday with some friends. It was super cool. Employees were very helpful, and the interactive activities were sooo fun. I did karaoke a bunch.
Madina Kassengaliyeva
This museum is so much fun and reinforced our love of words! Our son is 5, just starting to appreciate a good rhyme and he had 2 glorious hours at this museum before his brain was full of wonderful words. He especially loved the history of the English language and the ability to "paint" images with descriptive words. We'll definitely be back, because we only got through about half of the exhibits before the brains got tired. thanks to the staff!
Nicolette Leonardo
Fun and interactive learning experience. You have to book your spot in advance.
in hac lacrimarum Vale
Astonishingly well curated and well put together, the use of IT in this museum is really good.
WELL worth the visit.
Jane Karren Baker
I loved this new (to me at least museum). If you like language or knowing about the development of language, this is a museum for you. Although there are a few exhibits children may be interested in, overall I think this museum is best suited for ahead 10 and older. Younger children might get bored.
Also, this is a pay-what-you-can museum - for now at least. While you can go for free, please pay something if you can to encourage these types of museums and this museum in particular.
Jack
Wish i could give it more stars!!! Loved this exhibit and the lovely woman walking around letting you know how to best experience each room (and where the secret poetry room is).
Randall Woodrick
Loved this place.
Very informative
I do take issue with the lack African influence on the English language.
byron subero
This museum was fun and informative. You can spend the whole day there.
Kylie Rodgers
Awesome new museum all about language. Very interactive and great for all ages. Had a blast with my family. Awesome gift shop
Mandy Van Dellen
A fun, interactive attraction for all, not for only bibliophiles! The whole family (including teenage boys) enjoyed it. The interactive history of English room, the library and its hidden poetry room, and the words & quotes all over the walls were some of our favorite parts. I highly recommend it!
Meet Ms.Sallyy
Loved 🥰 Loved all the technology behind reading, speech recording, stories of language, history of international languages, digital reading, … much much more to be explored by you … … …
David Williams
Interesting and unexpectedly fun spot. Great chance to learn while smiling. And the resteraunt, Immigration Food, is a treat.
William Hampton
Incredible execution. One of the most interactive exhibits I’ve seen.
The advertising section could use a little work. The techniques referenced in the quizzes overlap heavily, and I disagree with quite a few of the answers. (And have a background in marketing.) But the exercise allows you to make your own ad at the end, and it scrolls on the screens in the room throughout the day, which is cool and creatively stimulating. Everything else was very impressive, even the gift shop!
Andrea Wu
AMAZING interactive museum about words. It was so much fun and I spent more time there than I thought, about two hours total (could've spent more time). All the exhibitions were really interesting and I really appreciated how interactive it was in that it wasn't all just reading. In fact, I read very little, and there was a lot of listening and questions and talking. Really awesome! The first exhibition was about different languages around the world and there was a video on made-up languages too. Another exhibition was about the English language in specific and how our words came to be (mostly from French, German, and Latin/Greek), and I liked the exhibition on jokes as well. There was also a room with a ton of books, and upon opening them on the table would start a short talk about the book. It was really well made and I enjoyed it! The last exhibit I went to was about ads and different tactics on language for ads, it was also really interesting. I highly, highly, highly recommend this museum because it's unique and interactive, not to mention it's very well made!
Yevgeniya Nusinovich
This new museum is truly a gem and educational fun for all ages. Unfortunately I had to leave to go somewhere else after a couple of hours, because I could have probably spent all day there if I had time, with all the different interactive activities. I'm really glad I got to go there and happily recommend it to others.
Bonnie Zuckerman
Fun experience! Went for a friend's birthday on a Saturday and it was not crowded. Interesting and beautifully designed exhibits and we learned a few things! Lots of great selfie & photo opps if that is your thing. There's also a fun photo booth inside. Love that there were a wide variety of interactive experiences suitable for all ages.
Jennifer Herrera
Planet word is a great place to go with older, and younger kids. It was also a fantastic learning experience for adults and children alike. Highly recommended by us locals.
Heather Rody
Super cool and interactive.
Even with a part of it closed, I had a blast.
Didn't do the 20$ lexicon section; maybe next time.
Be sure to take your time and explore, there's a lot to do and a lot to miss.
I was there for about 2 1/2 hours.
Sara Wieland
This place was fantastic and full of magical discoveries. The whole family agreed that it was the highlight of the day.
Natasha Hansen
A must visit! So fun and interactive and modern! Learned a ton and can’t wait to go back!
Malcolm Hamilton
I absolutely loved this museum. The languages room, the word wall, the library, cute small areas to find and explore. So many interactive exhibits. Take the whole family!
Kelsie Gillig
What a treasure this museum is -- each exhibit thoughtfully evokes imagination, learning and individual reflection about our ideas and use of language.
As a linguistic anthropologist, I am absolutely STOKED to see an entire museum dedicated to teaching people that language is something we DO and that it has the power to change our experiences as individuals but also as societies.
Amy Barth Sommerlatt
Exceptionally cool new museum. Very interactive and great for kids.
Rebekah McNally
5 stars isn't enough. I loved this place! When I was considering a holiday to Washington DC from Northern Ireland I found this place online and it was the first I booked to see, the rest of the holiday was planned around this. It's highly interactive and visually stimulating. The joy of language, reading and words is something that exists all cultures in the world. It's our records, our laws, our heritage, our dreams and fears. This museum sets out to inspire a love of language and communication across mediums, so if you aren't a fast reader or find it a struggle instead of a joy, there is still an interest for you here. Is it more suitable for children? Yes I suppose it is, with its interactive colorful exhibits. Does that mean you can't enjoy it as an adult? Definite no! Your enjoyment will be relative to your imagination and love for communication. If you have a master's in linguistics or English lit then ok you probably don't need to be here, but if not this place may inspire you to try. 😉
Lauren Thornberg
This was a really fantastic museum that I highly recommend. The exhibits were so engaging that I spent over 3 hours here. The museum's use of technology is very innovative and the exhibits are really visually stunning.
AJ Griem
Honestly, I’m not sure this was for me. I thought I would have learned a little bit more about the why and not just the ‘it is’.
However, I did appreciate all the work and effort into every exhibit and I completely understand how someone could love what they did here.
I’d encourage anyone to visit and see what this unique experience is about.
Ellen Cosgrove
Great gift shop!! Fun exhibits. Books!! I recorded myself reciting Jabberwocky.
Giovanni C
I love the place it is very interactive and it is a blast every time we go!
Chris Thompson
A great museum for teens and adults, but notb so much younger than that, as the concepts of languages and words can be relatively complex. The exhibits are highly interactive and multimedia, with many microphones to allow for audible engagement. Plenty of hand sanitizer throughout to put you at ease.
Brooke Baker
Brought a group of 4th and 5th graders and they absolutely loved it! Great field trip!
David E. Sullivan
We absolutely loved this museum. The exhibits were fun, interesting, and interactive. The staff were fantastic as well. Everyone should visit.
Beverly Coutts
I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was really interesting. A little more geared toward kids, but adults can find things to enjoy here, too!
Darcy R
Absolutely fantastic! Planet Word is a top of the list must see museum in a city of must see museums! If you can, it's absolutely worth the extra cost to visit Lexicon Lane and play one of their puzzle boxes. So fun!!!
Holly Ketchel
Small but kid friendly and engaging. They limit visitors so it doesn't feel crowded. IF you get there early there is parking out front but otherwise Metro is your best bet. This place is so much fun for kids and adults you forget you're learning. Also good for limited mobility individuals...and seniors appreciate that there are plenty of places to sit. The visit is free but we felt it so worthwhile we donated prior to leaving. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Grant Montgomery
Great place for those who love words, regardless of their age.
Nathaniel Gies (Nate)
Planet Word is a really interesting and engaging experience for ages 8 and up. It has some of the best interactive exhibits I've ever encountered in a museum.
It was a bit difficult to find parking, but we ended up finding some street parking not too far away.
It's a great 1-2 hour visit.
faitharooo_
Loved it here! I learned so much and the exhibits were really awesome. My favourites were: the room where we got to write our answers to prompts & hang them up on the wall (also the Shane Koyczan video brought tears to my eyes, the jokes portion, & the whole wall of words. Don't forget to take a picture in the photo booth before you leave. I highly recommend this museum!
Caitlyn Reilly
This museum is UNDERRATED. Hands down one of the best museums in the city. It's fun, interactive, engaging, great for all ages, and the best part is that, unlike the Smithsonian's, you can actually explore and experience the entire museum in just one visit. The space is also visually striking, with lots of beautifully crafted rooms/displays and plenty of natural light to show them off. The museum also has TONS of cool photo ops for Instagrammers.
Kori Majeed
Planet Word Museum is a magical place for people who love words, language and reading.
Zoe Weaver
This museum is incredibly well-done! It is clean, well-kept, welcoming, high-tech, immersive, and interesting! I want to go back and spend even more time.
At the time I went, I was able to walk in (on the half-hour) and sign in, donations encouraged. There is an elevator to all three floors, restrooms on each floor.
Mark S
Cool exhibits, friendly staff, but incredibly overcrowded. Felt like a Smithsonian on a holiday weekend - had to wait quite a while for turns on the iPads, books, and Word Wall, and the hallways were hard to navigate. Not sure why they ask you to reserve tickets if they let so many people in at once.
Amy Noel
AMAZING, very interactive museum, had to pry our two tween children from every room. Had we not needed lunch, we might have stayed forever! This free museum is very reminiscent of the best aspects of Epcot in Disney world. There's a virtual painting wall, creative details hidden everywhere, a karaoke room, a joke filled room, a magic library, etc. And each room is a delightful, immersive, interactive, education. We will be returning!
Ben Yovel
Great place - really fun for teenagers and younger, and for some adults. There’s a lot of fun actives to do, you can learn a lot and it is very interactive.
Rebecca Peterson
Lovely museum. Fun to visit while number of visitors is smaller so that you could enjoy everything. My husband loved the word wall. I particularly loved the library where books come to life. We both loved the room where you paint the walls using various emotions.
Jeet Shah
One of the coolest museum experiences in DC. Would recommend it for kids and adults of all ages. It took us about 90 mins to two hours to see and interact with all the exhibits. I didn't know what to expect when we first booked this but it was very engaging!
Fathima Muhammad
I think kids, nerdy kids most of all would get the most out of this place, BUT you can still visit and have fun as a grown up. The karaoke, photobooth, speaking books, and language center were the best parts imo and the gift shop had very cute postcards. You don't have to make a reservation and we even got let in earlier than the time our passes indicated so the staff are very nice about that :^)
Ashlee F
Very fun interactive museum. Exhibits are fun for kids and adults.
Cyril Moore
Super cool museum. Some of the exhibits are fantastic learning experiences.
Paola Belén Intriago
It's an incredible museum!! I love it, very interactive and so much to learn
Krikor
The kids absolutely loved this museum! And we as parents had a great time as well. The interactive displays are a lot of fun and very educational for everyone. Even our youngest at 6 had a great time there. This was our first stop on our first day in Washington DC and they kept asking to go back every day.
Beatrice Frank
What an amazing place. I went with my daughter and her two children ages 12 and 7 - no one wanted to leave. What a terrific learning experience. The entire museum is interactive in one form or another. Kudos to the staff, so helpful. A keeper for sure. A must see.
Renn Sansan
I loved this place. Next time I will bring the kids. It’s free however they asked for donations. Was all worth it.
INEZ W
This was one of my favorite museum experiences. Take an afternoon and drop by. We went on a weekend afternoon and it was just enough ppl there to not feel overcrowded. We were able to walk through and see each room comfortably. They have something for each age range and level of reader.
Cristina Sherer
Such a cool museum!! I'm a Bilingual Education specialist and this whole space was very in line with the attitude towards language (functionality and curiosity) that I try to cultivate with my students!
Jade West
So fun. I'm obsessed with words. So this place was cool.
Cody Brockway
A beautiful series of exhibits great for kids over the age of 6 and adults of all ages.
Lucas Barbosa
Amazing Museum to someone that loves the english language or even someone that wants to know more about it. Great experience
Richard Pluke
An excellent museum. Great use of technology & exhibits to explore the wonder of books and language. My 11 and 15 year old daughters had a blast!
Ernest
Excellent venue for an event
Rooftop with spectacular views
Delectable cuisine by Amy of Windows Catering
K. Anderson
So fun! Lots for all ages to explore with tons of information and interactive elements.
Katherine Hall
Best museum ever!
Jordan Feingold-Link
Absolutely fantastic. The projection mapping word wall is one of the most inspired museum exhibits I have ever seen.
Richard Rosenfeld
Did not know what to expect.
It was a VERY unique and enriching experience.
The introduction on the third floor was inspiring and informative.
Go!
Lily S
A really fantastic museum featuring 3 floors of interactive digital exhibits. My friends and I had a blast learning about world languages, watching a computer try to make a joke, and creating our own advertisement after learning about persuasive language. The museum provides fun for all ages and in a variety of ways, and can be done in 2-3 hours tops. What's really amazing is the museum's innovative technology that allows visitors to "paint" with words, get a virtual tour of a book just by placing it on a desk, and bring a diorama to life by speaking a famous quote into a microphone. Really creative stuff that will amaze little kids and is fun for adults, too. Overall, this is an amazing addition to D.C's museum collection, and best of all, it's free! Timed passes are available, but we were able to walk in without them.
Kim Duffy
This was a really great time. We brought my 1 year old nephew and it was a bit with the whole family. It was so well done, interactive, and everything was beautiful. It would be great for visitors or locals.
kristine franklin
This museum is a love story to language and literature. I highly recommend it!
Olo Egbokhare
Lovely place to go with kids. Fun activities both for kids and adults.
Alyssa Curran
One of my favorite DC museums. Recommend to everyone.
Brian LaValley
We visited with a group of National Spelling Bee contestants. Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit.
Wan-yun Teresa Chen
Creative displays and illustrations to give us an education in language! Recommend to adults and kids with word knowledge!
Susan Cirello
It was so very interesting! Learning the history of languages and how languages borrow words and phrases...the interactive library and the art areas...record your own speech..great gift shop to remember your visit. I highly recommend clearing an afternoon to spend there.
Noemi Giszpenc
Fun interactive displays about language and books aimed at kids but interesting for adults too
Sam Shrader
Very cool place. Plan to spend an hour, but that won't let you spend much time in each exhibit. Teenagers didn't love it, but the wife and I and our 4th grader had a fantastic experience.
Richard Dagneau
Lots of unique and fun exhibits involving language, how it came to be, and where it’s going.
C. Struthers
Fantastic museum experience here at Planet Word. Thumbs up, WAY UP, for this high tech, interactive, well curated museum. Such insightful exhibits here, displayed in this grand, historic building designed by A. Closs, who also built the Eastern Market in Cap. Hill. Thanks to Ms. Ann Friedman, founder, for a brilliantly organized new DC museum!
Esther Doliny
I love how they really took the time to teach on something we use all day everyday without a second thought: language.
Elle P.
If you enjoy words like I do, you will not be disappointed at Planet Word Museum. Being able to express yourself is an art and Planet Word is not short on the multitude of ways you can do just that. I've been there twice within a month and can't wait until I go again. Stepping into the elevator is an inviting portal of more than a gazillion words, then when you reach your destination (3rd floor), you are then ushered into the beginning of word use as a baby/toddler. The whole word universe takes off from there, and is as endless as infinite numbers and stars in the sky. This museum is great for all students, and that's everyone, because we all should continue to evolve and learn. LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!!!
Natalie Thomas
Fun interactive museum! I learned a lot and it was the perfect amount of time to spend in a museum- not overwhelming and too much but just enough to stay entertained and interested then whole time. Staff were also super friendly!
Amanda Der Bedrosian
Great museum. It's definitely geared more towards kids, but I think adults would enjoy it on their own as well

This museum was recommended by a friend and is technologically amazing. 2 hours just isn't enough time even if there are no crowds. Our visit was cut short due to a private event, so I asked if I could come back the next day. Came back the next day and spent almost 3 hours there! The best part was the 3 walled "paint" room. Some "paints" can be laid over others, and some create a whole new scene. Someone later told me you could make the Northern Lights, so now I have to go back! The reading room is awesome where you get a mini trailer for any book you put under the lights. So glad something like this came to DC and now Franklin Square is open!
Cassandra Lee
Probably my favorite museum of all the ones I’ve ever been to (went with a couple friends, all of us in our mid-20s, and been to most of the other Smithsonian museums already). Fun, interactive, colorful, and there’s lockers at the entrance to store your things! Greatly enjoyed the bathroom puns as well, I was honestly kinda sad when I realized we’d gone through everything
Win Gi
This museum is one of my favorites. If you like learning and geeking out about languages, this is the museum for you. It's still relatively new and more installations will be installed. You can already spend a good amount of time there as is. Reserve your spot online or just show up, as they usually have no shows and are able to let people in.
Erin Garcia
Such a fun place with interactive exhibits that are far from from the ordinary. You can paint on smart walls, sing in the karaoke room or go to the library to learn more about your favorite books! Entry is free though I do suggest donating, a great spot to go on rainy days and family friendly!
John Litvin

Carly Houghton
Great museum! Good for both kids and adults. Learned so much about the history of language. Had a fascinating visit! Would highly recommend for locals and tourists.
Lee Cox
My wife and i were just walking around the area, actually headed to city center park. We passed by a sign for a museum, so naturally we entered the gate. As we entered there was an electronic tree. It had lights and speakers dangling as if they were leaves or fruit. At first glance it was unnoticed. As we passed, sensors caught us and the tree responded to our movements beneath it. Then we recognized Cyrillic symbols along with other languages creating a statue of a man. As we entered the building we were told they were sold out for the day. They were so polite, and the entry was so nice, despite us being denied entry
Buaa Snow
Nice small museum on linguistics. Anyone working in the field or NLP should visit here!
Kaditra Mabry
Took my girlfriend on a date here and we had a great time. We showed up late but they still let us in. The exhibits were very interactive and interesting. Will definitely be back
Evon Barnes
I loved everything about this museum: the wonderful staff, the imaginative layout, & all the interactive, informative, visual, tactile, & auditory things for visitors to do and see. The museum offers entertainment for both kids and adults. I promise to return.
Hannah Lukow
Creative, interactive exhibits covering wide range of topics - history of English, features of world languages, literary/poetic devices in music, the role of language in advertising, language and humor, among others. I’d give five stars but I did feel that the exhibits lacked flow and focus; each exhibit was fabulous, but it was a one-off. I kept searching for the overarching story or argument being made, but ultimately Planet Word reads as an apolitical collection of pop linguistics facts, albeit very creatively presented. Still very interesting and a great experience overall.
Patricia Hasapis
A really fun new attraction in DC. Very entertaining to take younger children, but also fun for adults! We really enjoyed it! The cost to enter is free, But they do appreciate donations.
Daniel Bonamer
Fantastic exhibits on the origins of words and how words developed in various languages. But also explores how language is used in songs, how jokes are developed, the importance of phrasing in advertising, and so much more. Everything is very interactive and engaging. Highly recommend for visitors of all ages!
Yinzú Nairouz
This free museum is a hidden gem in DC. We had an awesome time in here. They have several interactive exhibitions. Free tickets but get them in advance
Melissa Moore
So much fun for word lovers! Very child friendly, as well.
Joseph Sigwarth
DC has another world-class museum! Planet Word is full of top-tier interactive exhibits. I went on a Saturday afternoon with a group of friends and we were all thoroughly engrossed for over three hours! The globe room with listen-and-respond displays introducing unique features from many of the world's dialects was one of my favorites.
Cordula Sturm Dahal
Innovative jewel of a museum with some very imaginative experiences, including a word wall and tasting dozens of different languages with cyber guides in an interactive room complete with a 'smart' globe! Kids will love the library and it's many secrets 😁 …
Ryan Burton (Able the Ambassador)
Beautifully designed with tons of excitement.
Sarah Zapolsky
Very fun! Inventive and short, with a great bistro in the basement.
Juliana Schaffer
Fascinating place full of interactive activities and state of the art technology.
Linda Burrell
My 3 year old Granddaughter loved it, she was excited to be a part of the activities. She was excited to use the stylist we loved it being interactive she was able to participate. Very Interesting and Educational.
Charmeane Price
I had a great time at Planet Word. It is a museum where you can talk, play educational games, and learn about languages. It is required to wear masks.
Adelle Lin
Really interesting museum, great for the whole family.
There are many different interactive elements throughout the space and you're able to learn lots of different facts about the origins of language.
I particularly enjoyed the word wall, the library and the wordplay maze.
Thomas Idzikowski
A fantastic venue which is long overdue!! It's amazing how much we can learn about our language and in such inventive ways. The interactive exhibits are spectacular!! Do not miss this groundbreaking museum.
Fayyaz Mustafa
Really nice setup. But needs to incorporate Bengali/Bangla as well.
Christy Dixon
This museum was AMAZING! I am a 2nd grade teacher and was in awe of what we were experiencing because it mirrors what I have been studying for teaching reading. I can't wait to go back to take my daughter.
Bailey Cage
Very fun museum! Lots of interactivity. Some information about the history of language, but more a focus on current languages, issues, research, etc. We were leisurely and spent about 3 hours there.
Karen Braun
What a great museum. The innovation of the intersections of technology, art, design and tactile is fantastic. Kids, grownups, readers or not, well done and definitely worth a visit.
Justin Wright
GREAT museum. I had a blast and I'd recommend this place to anyone. best of all, it's free! you can donate to the museum though and I can confidently say that when you finish you'll want to donate if you didn't already.
Greg N
Wonderful place for both kids and adults. Helpful staff. Lots of fun in the karaoke area. And we enjoyed the history of words.
Cora Davis
Language is something people take for granted. This museum is an opportunity to delve into an aspect of ourselves that we’re intimately familiar with, yet know nothing about. Anyone can benefit from going to this museum, but I have a feeling it’ll be extra special to those already interested in linguistics, philosophy, literature, or cognition. The exhibits tackle a diverse range of subjects and do a great job of being both informative and entertaining. The museum is pay what you wish and the building itself is beautiful. This is a hot take... but in my opinion Planet Word is the best museum in DC. Please check it out and support it if you can!
Deena Alshwairikh
One of the best museums in DC hands down! But unfortunately I had to leave early to catch my train but I’d see myself spending many hours there! If you love to read and languages I’d highly recommend visiting this museum!
Simone Laan
We loved this interactive museum! A must visit in Washington
Rachelle Jeanty
Fun cool museum in DC. Never been to a place that broke down language,!
Really enjoyed the exhibits and the library. I went mainly for the visuals but great for kids or a date night.
Amanda Parks
What a great place to take the children!! Come visit for a day of fun, hands-on interactive actives. Enjoy!
Waldo Strange
Interactive displays work poorly. Sounds overlap and voice recognition is lacking. It's definitely aimed at a younger crowd (middle school, perhaps), so not that interesting for an adult native English speaker. Poetry information is inaccurate. Three stars instead of one because the gift shop has interesting stuff, and I think there's a chance the rest of the museum will improve over time.
Liz Sedaghatfar
Loved Planet Word! Interesting and totally interactive. The exhibits were fun and educational; they made you think. It was a wonderful experience, I highly recommend a visit!
Melinda Nguyen
Great Great Great Great interactive museum!!! Every room was fun and engaging. I really enjoyed this place and would highly recommend people to come visit!!! And it's free (you could give a donation)!!! Very fun place for all!
Cinder Van
All the exhibits were fascinating and I learned so much. I could have spent all day in the library alone. There are dioramas in the library and underneath the diorama is a drawer, pull out the drawer and the book is inside and tells you all about the scene you are looking at. This is another place with a secret door and it is well worth finding.
Kanittha N.
The best museum ever. I really enjoyed every section in there. You can spend 3 hours there without being bored.
Sandeep Mamidenna
This is a fascinating collection of experiences for a book lover of all ages. Great use of technology for an immersive exploration of language, books and culture. Super recommend!
Rod Frasure
The language tree in the garden is totally amazing, listen to voices from all around the world! Inside.. the digital AI library is fantastic, not a fan of karaoke in my museums but Hey .. if it teaches words, then so be it!! For the writer and poet this is a must do museum, for the linguist, the reader, the lyricist, this is a must do museum. The lover of words, prose, origin and language this is a must do museum. The teacher, the student, the speaker, those in marketing and production using words, the actor, the Shakespearian, those who love spoken and written words.. if you want to know what Yelllow Submarine really means... this is a must do museum! Did you know there are no one answer words in Gaelic? They do not say, Yes .. or No.
You can even explore your heritage here .. a must do museum in Washington DC !!
Yvonne Ingram
My niece from Michigan actually saw a TikTok about this museum and wanted to visit it once she came to town. Well she was in town today so we visited this musuem and enjoyed every exhibit - the books, the different languages, the words - we loved it all! Even the music exhibit.
Sunil Ohri
Which Words should be used to describe Planet Word - an interactive exhibition of Words? I'd say Amazing, Awesome, Cool, Fun, and Fantastic just to choose a few.
It's a great time for ages 4 and up! If you like to read, or you're a Word geek or a logophile or you like languages, I strongly recommend that you get to Planet Word.
To get the full experience, you'll need between 3 and 4 hours. But, if your pressed for time, you could do it in less. There are a lot of great elements to the show.
Two pieces that will appeal to everyone are the Music/Karoke room and the Joke room.
In the karoke room, you can select songs by a wide range of singers from Bob Dylan to Neal Diamond to Taylor Swift to One Republic to Disney's Frozen and sing along with them. You can also learn about the words in the song while you sing along!
In the joke room, fair warning it's a lot of "dad" jokes which are great for younger kids, you can compete against your kids or significant other as to who can make the other person laugh 5 times first. I had a great time doing this with my 17 year old daughter!
There are a number of other great rooms with other fun, interesting, and educational exhibits. Do not miss out!
D -
Fun interactive experience. Our favorite part was the photo booth which gave us two prints. There is a restaurant on street level for lunch afterwards.

Christina Vlachos
So much fun! Interactive, informative and fun. Would definitely go back
Bill R
The museum is tailored for children and has missed many opportunities to develop and showcase the relevance and impact of the written word. A museum should be a place to return to continue to learn, I don't think I'll have to go back to this one.
Sharon Sun
Worda are not enough to describe! We loved it. It was bothe educational and entretaining
Samuel Brewer
Super cool with fun and interactive exhibits.
Jeneen G
Washington DC's newest museum! Truly a #reader #booklover #wordlover #poetrylover #fictionlover etc's paradise. There's a #wordwall, a karaoke room where you can learn about poetry in songs, a joke room, a poetry nook hidden behind a secret door in the library 😃😃 and even one where you can learn about #languages from all over the world. Lots more to see and experience. Very interactive but not overwhelmingly big. Can't recommend it enough!

Awesome and fun way to show language and how language changes.
The only thing I'd like to see is a wall of all the written language characters and alphabets.
My kid is super fascinated with written language and I think it would be neat to see all of it up somewhere.
