I've recently learned that 78% of all military aged Black men in the free states served in the Union Army, around 1/10th of all troops .... I'm glad to see you honor these men woth this memorial.
I'll be visiting your museum soon.
(BTW: let's place one of these monuments next to every confederate one in the nation. Let's tell the narrative right! )

A MUST SEE IF ON A TRIP TO DC! I decided to go on a weekday to avoid the crowd.
I recommend booking a scheduled time on their website first to bypass the entry queue.
From the accurate timeline of history (early days of slave trade to modern slavery) to the well articulated story’s and narratives, you will leave this museum with a sense of soberness, humility and joy as to how far we have come as humans.
The 2 hours we spent taking in all the history definitely wasn’t enough. If you really want to get a full experience, I recommend dedicating a full day to the museum!
Prina Jackson
(August 3, 2021) It was a great experience. I just happen to be in the area & didn't really realize where I was then I seen this. A tour was going on at the same time. It was great. I would recommend this. The gentleman was awesome. The soldier was great with the information. I would love to come back here.
Tim Wright
Text heavy exhibitions, but boy is it all needed and important information. The museum tells a comprehensive story of the black soldier via the black experience at large, including time periods well before and after the Civil War. Staff is A++++. One of the few museums that offer equally compelling experiences for visitors AND DC residents alike.
Robin Taylor
I truly enjoyed visiting the African American Civil War Museum and received a very informative history lesson from the Director before I wandered around! There was also an event going on but I was still able to get some great pics!! Will definitely be going back so I can see more!! Great place to visit!! So much HISTORY!!
Anita Randolph
I came here on a school field trip. The actors playing soldiers are great and good with children. They give an interactive lesson on what life was like for the African American Soldiers. Provided scavenger hunt for the children, then leads them to outdoor memorial ( better to visit when it’s warm out)
Overall great experience.
Michaeline Powell
Timed entrances makes the experience pleasurable. Could use a better map suggesting how to navigate the top floir.
Melissa Kisamore
WELL worth the stop. Free African American Civil War museum has African American history from slavery to civil rights and you'll definitely learn some things they don't tell you in history class. Period dress, live musket presentation and our guide knew his facts and history. Everyone should stop by here to know about our nation's history.
Kimblee Robinson
Highly recommend for the family (not children under 13 it may be overwhelming) Make sure to start at the bottom and work your way up with the tour. Allow yourself an entire day
Cassandra Williams
If you have time stop and listen to the history of Africans Americians who lost their lives during the war. Glad our tour guide stopped here!
Ms.O Brown
Full of inspiring stories of our past, present, and future. These kings of men deserve to be honored, in such a way as is done at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum.
pamela brown
A lot of African American history in a small space, I would recommend leaving a nice donation because they do not charge you.
Ellis Jackson
The amount (209K+) of names of the soldiers listed was mind blowing!
Maurice
Had a really great time, very educational, you need two days to go through this Museum.
Michal Krasowski
It is rather small museum, worth visiting but far less impressive than Afro-American museum (or others). If you are nearby you can take a look.
Kelly K
What an amazing experience, I learned so much. The best part was this man who shared about his life and stories that went from generation to another in his family. I had tears during his speech, that is how powerful it was ...
Sean Stewart
The tour guide was very insightful and well prepared!
Gabby Groce
Small museum with lots of history! Our tour guide had all the answers and was very helpful!
LM GS
An amazing place where you can find and connect to your ancestors.
Shawn Polk
What an amazing experience for my family. An awesome and intimate look at the events of the Civil War that shaped the country and showed how significant African Americans contributions were for all Americans, especially people of color.
K. Williams
Great place to visit when you're in the DC area.
Michael Richardson
I felt a since of pride and self worth when I visited this museum because there are not MANY museums honoring our history! The staff there made me feel like I belonged to a great culture.
Rick Horsford
Wonderful Memorial, however, the locals do not realize a memorial is not a hang out, it's not a trash dump. It looks like someone set fire to a portion of the wall. How stupid can one be. I think a gate/fence or something should be around this memorial.
M Clark
Best experience I've had in a civil war museum, our guide Markquett is a very bright and passionate young man who uncovered many hidden secrets about African Americans' role is all wars.
Brea Hatcher
Went here 3 years ago and it is so worth the visit. I loved all the little details and the acting from the soldiers
Christian Sailor
Visited recently for my birthday. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff! Can't wait to go back!
Kevin Badon
I arrived in the midst of the museums relocation and was given a personal tour around the exhibits that were still available. Very informative and am excited to visit at the new and expanded location.
Arlene wilson
A short 10 minute Uber ride from the National Mall. Learned a great deal about the role of African Americans fight for freedom and the Union in the Civil War.
Alpha issiaga Cisse
Small ,historicaly significant place , this was a lovely activity . Benjamen Sands and his band was incredible the poems, the songs it was a lovely day.
Taren Parsons
I have been here twice with my students on field trips. I love the presentation given, the introduction video, and the content in the museum itself. It is small, but filled with information and the staff is so accommodating! We will definitely be back next year!
Shelby Harrell
One of my favorite museums. It will take more than one visit to grasp the entirety of this museum. I lived in DC for years and every time I stopped by I saw something new. It will fill HOURS of your day, so plan to spend lots of time there. It will be worth it though. The food there is some of the best of any of the Smithsonian's (I used to work in Air & Space, trust me, African American Museum food is 10x better) and I love the selections of books they have in the gift shop.
Sam Hunley
This museum is exceedingly well done. The exhibits are very easy to guide yourself through, and they have great guides. My group was only able to stop for about 30 minutes before we had to head out, but even in that short amount of time, I feel like I learned a lot. I will definitely be going back with more time.
Marlon S McNeill Sr
This is a must for everyone to visit when they visit DC. To my knowledge it is still free will offerings (no charge). To get a full understanding of what salves were promised and what they received along with where we are today. The staff there is very informed of the facts of what happened during that time. Do to the vast confusion and how American History is spoken about this is where the source resides. I would recommend this to anyone who wants the truth of our American History family or friends alike.
Luke Beer
Such a well curated and engaging museum. Excellent photos, placards, narrations and artifacts. The young museum officials are friendly, passionate and knowledgeable. The classroom of kids being marched around the museum by the historian in full military uniform was a highlight of my day! A top museum in DC and of the museums I have visited globally.
Austin Graff
There are two things that go together here- the actual memorial just outside of the U Street Metro station in the nearby plaza and the museum itself a block further. Here's what's interesting about the museum:
1) Space: It's small, but they make due with the space given. The large room is divided into smaller rooms telling the story of those of African descent who fought in the Civil War from slavery to the war to civil rights. It's a lot of reading with a few artifacts scattered throughout, but it's interesting and well presented.
2) Staff: They are very friendly and they will even give you a tour upon request.
3) Store: There's a small store at the end with books, shirts, etc.
For a free museum, it's worth a visit!
Perry Saunders
All my years of visiting D. C. when I was a kid to adult. I didn't know of this place. I love Museums, especially History Museums. However, to see a Museum reflect my race and the the contribution we made and Blood Sweat and Tears made this special. I would recommend Visiting this place along with the African American Museum of History down on the Mall as a complete package. A must see.
Nelson R. Gomez-Torres
This museum discusses history, trough mostly photos (and photos of art or artifacts). The museum has just a few historical pieces (around 20 including books). I would say that considering that it is free, and you are already in the area, it is ok to drop by for half an hour.
I think that the main "problem" of the museum, is having too little artifacts to "show" the history... But it IS relevant history, and important to learn.
Christina Curry
GO!! If you value REAL history and want to learn some amazing things, check this place out!!
Be prepared, theres a TON of reading but its so very worth it. The staff that was on duty was so incredibly personable and one gentleman even taught my son how to load a musket.
They give kids a passport to get stamped at different places. And this place is off the beaten path a bit which makes it NOT crowded, free parking, and free entry.
By far one of the highlights of my trip!!
Linda Monroe
Tour guide very informative, and knowledgeable!
ANTOINETTE
I love the museum!!! So much history. The tour was excellent!!!👏👏👏 I would recommend this museum to everyone. I wish they had more of the hoodies and t-shirts representing the museum. But most of all, I wish I could have gotten one of the statues of the civil war monument. May be one day. ☹☹☹ Over all great museum!!!😁😁😁 …
Joseph Fedrowitz
GO!!! The story told is such an essential and important part of our history. But yet totally forgotten….or hidden.
As others have noted, the staff is amazing. What a passionate and committed group. Thank you.
We recently took a series of trips in the Deep South and Mid-Atlantic, visiting 30 sites related to Slavery, Civil Rights and African American history. This was one of outstanding highlights. And the only one telling this story in such depth.
Again, go and then tell your friends to do the same.
K Edwards
Museum has awesome history and exhibits. The narrator did an excellent job of explaining all of the parts that tied in with all the dates of importance of history that we've been taught bits and pieces of. He tied all of the missing pieces together so all of the war stories makes sense now.
Lori Drum
This is a great little museum hidden away in DC. The staff are extremely knowledgable, and the collection has some real gems. They clearly put a lot of effort into researching the history. Highly recommend!
Kirsten Neus Swift
This museum is very well done. There is so much interesting information about American history, you could easily spend hours here. The exhibits start long before the Civil War and go all the way through the Civil Rights Movement. I learned a lot and highly recommend a visit. The museum is free to visit but a $5 donation is suggested. There’s a small gift shop, bathrooms and a National Park Passport stamp for the African American Civil War Memorial.
Ryan Mulkey
This museum is easily one of the best in DC, and that is saying a lot, given the plethora of top flight museums in the area. It is small, but efficient. One can learn a great amount about African American history, not only around the time of the civil war, but the formation of the country. I would recommend this to anyone visiting DC. I know I shall return.
David W. Miller
One of the loveliest and most serendipitous experiences at the Museum of my life. When we walked in, we were asked if we were there for the presentation. It turned out that a research presentation into the family tree associated with a African American Civil War veteran was about to take place. This was one of the most touching and personal experiences I've ever encountered at the Museum, and it only makes me want to return. Thank you so much
Bones E
A wealth of information and knowledge can be found in this wonderful museum. The staff on hand will talk to you about any of the subjects covered. Parking is difficult to find so plan ahead. There are a small number of parking spots on the 1/2 street behind the building.
Babydoll China
Beautiful get away place 💋🙊🥰💕 …
Todd Aldrich
They had three guest speakers there discussing issues in relation to black soldiers during the Vietnam War. One presenter read two personal letters from a black union soldier. A nice array of visual aids. Would like them to add more selections of books in their store. Overall was a nice museum
Forrest Ellis
Wasn't looking for this museum/learning center when I found it. I was walking around D.C. taking photographs when I saw a memorial for black American soldiers who have passed away in war. I believe it was for soldiers in the Civil War fighting for both sides, the Union and the Confederacy. I looked to the left across the road, and between two townhouses, was a decorative arch, which led into a darkened nook behind the homes. I would've probably missed it had it not been for the arch close to the sidewalk and road. I was expecting a museum when I walked in, but it was more of a learning/education center, with loads of historic information on walls winding around what appeared to be an old school/community center's gym/auditorium.
When I entered, there were very few people in there, and I was greeted by an older gentleman dressed in Civil War era clothing. He greeted me and was very friendly. He was very informed on the subject of the Civil War, African Americans in the civil war, and the abolishment of slavery. He was also well informed on the subject of Abraham Lincoln and his part in the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery. I like to do tours at my own pace to take everything in, but once there was a decent amount of people in the center, the man offered to do a guided tour. I continued to do my own tour, but listened in to what he said to the group, and he was very thought provoking, which is a very good thing for a your guide.
The only reason I don't give this place five stars is because it was a pretty small place situated in an old gym it seems. Although it was an informative and insightful place, it gave me the impression that someone didn't know where to put it, so they found a random room to stick it in. This place, to me, deserves a more finished interior, or bigger and better setting. By the way, I believe they do cultural events there as well, but not completely sure about that.
`Abdu'l-Karim Ewing-Boyd
I loved it as did my students. We took 40 students and they left with books, museum supported Passports to Freedom and lots of answers to their interested questions. Exceptional visit.
T S
What a fantastic and underrated museum! My wife and I walked here from Bloomingdale on a Saturday in March when the weather was nice and we were delighted with our experience. First, there was a great presentation by two Civil War reenactors who walked us through the history of the USCT through the perspective of a soldier from DC staying at Camp Greene (now Roosevelt island). Then as we wandered the interesting exhibits, a museum curator answered questions and went into further detail about exhibits in which we were most interested. Everyone there was very friendly and knowledgeable and you could see that they were passionate about their interest in this period of history. I'd highly recommend visiting this like museum in Vermont Ave that can often be easily overlooked in a city with so much history, art, and other culture concentrated downtown.
BobbY Butler III
Hidden gem!!! The Emmit Till exhibit had me in tears!
Mz. Bailey
I sponsored a few trips thru my employer to this museum. The founder Dr. Frank Smith is delightful to work with. Our employees loved to learn interesting facts about blacks in the military and during times of war. It's a definite must see if your in DC or visiting.
Wayne E
The Museum was closed because of Covid restrictions but we were told it's moving across the street to a newer location. Liked what we were able to see outside and through the windows.
Sharon B
Had a wonderful time, learned a lot of my history that I was unaware of. I was so sorry to hear that you're driving force behind this Museum recently passed away.
I think it's a stop worth taking on every tour of DC.
Talitha House-Poole
It was a hidden gem. The staff was very very friendly. The scavenger hunt was a hit with not only the kids but the adults as well. I love the fact they made the meuesms enjoyable for the children. They actually encourage the children to touch and dress in some artifacts. I would recommend this meuesm to others visting the D.C. area. And will be back on a future visit.
Arlan Arthur
Great place to learn. Can't wait for the new building.
Shannon Smith
This museum is definitely worth a visit. It takes a look at the oft-overlooked role of African-Americans in the Civil War. More importantly, the video, information, and artifacts in the museum ask attendees to question their conceptions about the civil war and emancipation. Simple layout to the museum, but still contains so much information!
Dan O'Neill
This is a small, but comprehensive museum dedicated to the 400k soldiers of African descent who served in the Civil War. Chock full of great info, including an informative 22 minute video. Located in the midst of the U Street Corridor, aka Historic Black Broadway. Worth the visit!
Jessica
Awesome little museum! It's small but very new and clean, packed with a lot of information and some nice artifacts. The people who working were very friendly and seemed knowledged about the information presented.
Latricia Williams
I really love the African American Museum oh the things you would see there takes you back in time I'm glad I wasn't in that time zone. Have your walking shoes on because it's a big place and I'll take you all day to see it. Lunch there do it start at the bottom and work your way up to the top
Brianna H
This museum was a little small for me, but for a small donation, totally worth it. The staff were very helpful, showed us artifacts, and seemed really happy to answer our questions. Definitely recommend.
Mark
Wonderful experience staff took time to give an impromptu tour. A definite must do and great stand alone or accompaniment to the new National African American History Museum
Darrin Williams
Amazing experience. Hard to find at first, but luckily they are expanding to new building across the street. Still, highly recommended for a take on African American history that is too often not told.
Ol' Sarge Jennings
Contents of the museum are nice. However it seems like the museum is pushed back into a corner of an alley. Not cool for African Americans who fought to liberate the country from oppression. Even in a monumental state they remained oppressed..sad
Kelley Jenkins
It is an AMAZING museum...I was truly emotional in certain areas of the museum. I look forward to going back again in the near future
Fatih Demirci
it's a small museum. only one exhibition, takes 30 minutes if you examine every single detail.
Robin Walker Salas
The museum is undergoing construction for expansion at present so I suggest that anyone go now prior to the renovations to see what it looks like at present and then come back and see what it looks like after the expansion...
It was hard for me to wrap my head around some of the things I saw because I don't think people are aware enough...
DEFINITELY make this the 1 stop in DC that you MUST visit...
Robert Fallsjr
Very relevant Very Educational (Remember Fort Pillow)
anna baker
Moving experience especially seeing over 206,000 names.
garlinda walls
What a little known gem! Small, but Beautiful. Well worth visiting.
Ruby Wright
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, who took a personal interest in helping my group to understand and appreciate the contributions of AA during the Civil war time.
They have plans to expand in the future which very much needed.
zakina carter
I had an exceptional time at the museum, it is always good to know your history!!!Not only is the museum historical but so is the are that it is located in, so make sure to see all you can!!I am happy I was able to visit.
Linda Wilson
Interesting. A small place that provides information on African american soldiers. Hard to spot if you don't know where you are going. Did the self guided tour which did not take long but I found out into that I was looking for
Anthony B
Small museum but lots of information. Had a great trip visiting and learning. Make sure to ask about seeing the muskets and standard uniform!
Alan Steel
It's incredible to see how many people lost their lives to fight for their freedom. With a close proximity to the Black Broadway/H street, it makes it a worthwhile visit to appreciate heros.
Michiel de Vries
Interesting. A hell of a lot quieter as the new museum of Afro American History. Rather small; you can see it in about an hour.
I would give it a 3 1/2 if possible.
Shani Mitchell
A lot of history in a relatively small location! The employees were friendly & well researched in OUR history. Hopefully, the people that go will unlearn the lies they've been fed & relearn the true history
Monique Russell
I loved everything about this museum. I would like to thank Mr. Coleman for the tour. I enjoyed every bit of it.
Mikia Heard (Meek2442)
I have yet to view all of the exhibits but there are some great artifacts along with well written literature that capture the history. The staff is nice and helpful. I will say that if you are walking the African American History trail in D.C., following the signs and do not know where this museum is it is easy to miss. If you have gone past the CVS on U street or are standing/staring at the soldier memorial U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo metro stop you have gone too far. You need to turn around, stay in the same side of the metro walking away from the CVS and and make a right in front of U Scoot. The museum will be on you left as you walk down an alley past the iron gate entrance
Basil Klaus
Such a well constructed museum , I had a good field trip experience . I truly think this place very educational . Amazing check it out.
Hayley Rogers
This museum is a hidden gem! It is open regardless of the shutdown! When I visited there was a civil war reenactor who told me about a lot of interesting information of this forgotten side of history.
Johntel Greene
Fantastic museum right in the heart of U St. There is a lot that history books don't tell you about blacks in the civil war (and DC) and this museum manages to capture it in a compelling way.
Kent Olson
Smaller scale and more intimate than the big Smithsonian museums. Very friendly living actors. Nice scavenger hunt for kids
Estella Crews
The most awesome museum ever. Beautiful. Can't see it all in one day. Must make more than one trip.
Leonard Pickett
This place is a hidden jewel amongst the museum's in DC. Away from the Mall area, this museum is small, intimate, and serves an important function in educating us about the role of African Americans in the Civil War.
Roxanne G
I went on the last Saturday of the month and sat in on the discussion that was being held. Very enlightening talk. Next time, I'll view the exhibits.
John W McCaskill
This Memorial and Museum is dedicated to the over 209,000 Blacks who helped to preserve the Union during the American Civil War. It is a great and informative point of interest.
JOE MCMUFFIN
Awesome place! We are really glad we found this museum. Very informative and a must see if youre in DC.
Carl Christensen
A welcome necessity for preserving actual Civil War history. I've found over the years that "Civil War buffs" have trended to be white conservative "Lost Cause" fans. And the African-American experience of slavery and the Civil War is often ignored or buried under encomiums to RE Lee or Mosby or Nathan Bedford Forrest. So it's nice to have a place to direct them to learn actual history and not revisionism.
Crystal Wilson
We were given Free Tickets to enter after our Bus Tour ended.
Abby Byrnes
I attended an event held at the museum, and got a brief tour. I can't wait to go back and spend more time at the museum, to see more of the exhibits.
JT Edwards
Steeped in history, this is a must see. Additionally, the museum is a wonderful delight and respectful tribute to those who sacrificed for the Union.
Angela H
A small hidden rare gem in the city. I attended a play with friends. Walkable to dinning spots and metro accessible makes it even better.
How Q
Very important part of history needs a better LOCATION AND PUBLICLY....
TOUR GUIDE WAS GREAT. HE ASSISTED A LOT
HOWEVER THE FRONT DESK PEOPLE NEED CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS. THEY TOTALLY IGNORED VISTORS
Spencer Iscove
They have been relegated to the street as the building that once housed the museum has been sold and turned into office spaces.
Allison Johnson
Such a fabulously fantastic place to learn about the amazing contributions, overcoming struggles and great cultural heritage tours of the African American experiences in the USA.
Kevin Thornton
Visited on an outing with the men/boys from my church. Cool place, staff engaged and excited about Black History...great stories told on Black history not his story
Catrina
Great place to visit! Hard to get into due to the scheduling tickets on the same day. That's the downside. It's definitely a gamble. Goodluck trying to get in.
Amanda Reiser
Cool setup inside and interactive staff. Museum provides great history of African Americans serving in the civil war
Fiona Kalu Lenze
It's hidden in the corner. You have to carefully look for it while you cross the road from the metro. Too much information is given. I recommend going in the morning when you mind is fresh.
Maya
This place is small, but mighty. The curators performed demonstrations of how the weapons available during the Civil War were used. I can't believe how young kids were who were sent out on the lines...10 years old!
Lori Pearson
Great place to see the names of African American soldiers on a wall who served during the civil war. There were 106 fighting units. Must see!
Eric Coulter
An okay museum. It is small with oversized display panels that are actually difficult to read in spots. More items for display would help too. Please donate so improvements can be made. A must for civil war history enthusiasts.
Adrian Brunner
Nice small museum focusing on the Civil War. If you want to get more information about African American history I would recommend the Smithsonian museum instead, as it covers not only the Civil War but Slavery in general, segregation and more.
Sharon
Peaceful. Impromptu stop on a beautiful Saturday. Is rather small and you can miss if you blink. More signage, before you get to the location, needed.
Dimitri Hepburn
Great place for field trips or to learn about our often untold history on your own. Staff is very knowledgeable.
Aria Aledavood
A nice museum to get more familiar with African-American culture and history, the staffs are so friendly and ready to help and guide you.
Monamma AL-Ghuiyy
This is a very nice memorial
Shaun Paine
It is history that needs to be taught. Please take your children and grandchildren, folks it's not a race thing it's just history that's not being accounted for. Those that will not remember history are bound to repeat it.
Mercy Murch
Enjoyed the History as well as the pleasant willingness to assist and answer all questions. Will definitely attend again.
Elijah Allison
Wonderful source of history for African-Americans who served in the United States Civil War. It's currently in process of expanding and I can't wait to return to visit!!!
Melissa welch
Amazing place to learn about history. My daughter and I learned so much. Really enjoyed this stop!
Gilad Kabilo
Very educational and in-depth place. Run locally by passiobate volunteers. Worth a visit.
Guilliam Lille
Small but interesting museum focused on a vital but oft missed segment of US history. Any history lover should check it out
Yassaman Behmanesh
I wish all people, especially kids, would visit this museum. It's a shame to watch this cruelty in the past and now in the present not only in the U.S but all over the globe; in Syria, Iraq, and all over Africa.
Dillan Jenkins
Definitely a place everyone needs to visit holds almost a hidden history of our country find a lot of things you probably never new.
Dellaphine Chitty
I have been to the museum several times and I find the information they impart to be informative and accurate and the staff is friendly and helpful.

A hidden gem of a museum in DC. Way off the other DC museums' beaten path, but worth the visit for history buffs and in particular Civil War/African American history fans.

This is an excellent museum to visit if anyone is interested in Civil War History and Civil Rights.
