Reviews of Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art
Kimberly Feathers
Hello everyone! VA MOCA! Great! My first time and I liked it! There are no rotating exhibits, which makes the museum free and it’s a non profit. Check out the exhibit hi lighting young artists to Made in Virginia exhibit to the Sculpture exhibit. That staff is friendly and knowledgeable as well! Before you leave, check out the independent bookstore when you walk in to through the front entrance!
Omar Navarro
I Love this place! It was my first visit, parking was free, admission was free. Too bad most of the place was closed because they were fixing the place up. However do to that, I was blessed to see the children's art and IT WAS SOOOO NICE!!! I'm amazed at how talented these kids are, keep up the great work! I'll be back soon for my second first visit soon!
Hope Myers
Small but lovely experience. If you’re in VB stop by! They have a cozy little bookstore attached as well. Loved browsing the exhibits while I was in town!
Jamie
Modern and spacious museum housing a variety of contemporary works. I appreciate the diversity in background of these artists, many of whom are minorities. Although small, its well worth a visit if you are in the area!
Min Zhang
It’s free. Docents were really nice and helpful, but there wasn’t much to see as they were in between exhibits. A small Hampton Roads student gallery remained open.
Alex Lima
The temporary exhibit was mind blowing. However, the museum needs a much better permanent collection.
Karen Nunez
Grew up creating art and admiring art, started with silly drawings and turned into a pasion, im so glad museums like this still exist. Had a great time, awesome pieces of art
Eileen
Some fun places to come too. Small place but some really good exhibits come through. A lot of interactive for kids. Small bookstore here.
Kristina Green
This was my first time visiting the museum, and I had a wonderful day. Both parking and entrance fee were free. The personnel was friendly. I was too fortunate to view the kids' artwork. Additionally, there is a cute tiny bookstore there. Despite being small, it is well worth a visit if you are nearby!
Eric Vogel
Had a day off from the job that brought me to VA Beach, took some mushrooms, popped some mumble jazz in my headphones and had the most wonderfully magical experience in your incredible museum! Everyone I encountered was beyond lovely, the work selected was well thought out in both consistency AND variety, the place was cleaned to perfection, even the little 3rd party bookshop was adorable. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in what will be a long remembered visit for me.
Laurel Martin
Beautiful open space with rotating exhibits. Visited for the Maya Lin exhibition. Chatted with one of the artists in residence..
Joyce Graber
I enjoy the size and design if this museum as well as the art itself. It is a comfortable relaxing place to browse and enjoy art. The highlight on local artists was unique.
I was disappointed in The hands on family oriented section. It didn’t seem like there was much playful fun to be had there.
Ric Burnley
Exhibits were very engaging. Cool to see local artists creating significant work. Museum was comfortable and bright. Easy to navigate and enjoy display. It is small, but I had more time to spend with each work of art. Look forward to next visit.
Cari Burns
Beautiful, small museum. Free admission currently, and they change exhibits out every 4 to 6 months. Beautiful little book shop inside as well. Had a lot of beautiful art pieces.
Kristy Litts
Had my wedding here and it was absolutely stunning!!!
OH MY GOSH. We were completely floored when we found this venue. This place is absolutely gorgeous by providing the beauty of indoors (AC, heat, no rain) with outdoors (trees with string lights). It honestly felt like we were in a movie. We used the gorgeous Rodriguez Pavilion (full length windows that outlook to the trees) for cocktail hour and the Atrium (trees spaced throughout with lights on the trees as well as light up pillars) for our reception. Our guests seamlessly transitioned from cocktail hour through the magnificent theater to our reception area. We even had a small room that went into the reception area where we perfectly could stage the photobooth. Kay Barbini who is in charge of the facilities was extremely informative and even offered us some advice. The facility is a little pricey compared to what we looked at, but the venue was so breath-taking, we had to book it. Especially to avoid any scares with the heat of August and the rain.
Julez Winfield
Very nice staff. Wonderful exhibit pieces. On site instruction for art courses. Community contribution is a focus of the museum. Many local artists often have opportunities to show their work.
Amy Alderson
Very unique and interesting art. I loved the Wayne White exhibit and the disposable film series. Very small museum so it is easy to get through if you have children with short attention spans!
Beth
We have gone here several times to see many different exhibits and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I don’t know if anything will beat The Hi-fructose exhibit, but everything we saw today was amazing as well! Very inexpensive, never too crowded, great to have such an awesome place in Virginia Beach!
Victor Cannestro
Very reasonably priced with the student/military discount and well worth the 2.5 hours I spent there. The works of Todd Schorr and Julie Heffernan (shown in many of the pictures) are thought provoking and detailed. The prompts provided by the museum were especially helpful since I was visiting alone, and the ARTlab was charming, good fun. I look forward to visiting again in future seasons.
Susan Jones
Awesome museum of art!
Interactive parts for children and adults.
Rachel Hughes
Beautiful museum with regularly changing exhibitions. There’s always something new to experience.
Pam Kenney
Beautiful museum, small admission fee, lovely galleries with changing exhibits. The only reason for my 4/5 is because it’s small. Loved the interactive exhibits, the outdoor exhibits & beautiful location.
Keith Privette
Got to take a woodworking class here with a great teacher Kim Higgins. She needs to reach more classes!
Michael Costa
I went in not expecting too much but came out in awe! Great pictures, interactive displays, tech-art... and movies at the end. For $8, definitely worth the investment
Miss T
There weren't many exhibits, but it is a nice establishment. They could definitely stand to expand on some of the exhibits and/or also have some permanent installations along with the featured artist[s].
Mrs. Dino
Cute small art museum. Not much to see but for the free admission it was worth checking out.
Mary Mertl
I love this place and come here every year! The people that work there are so friendly and knowledgeable. They were showing 3 artists this year.
Shanna Fife
I enjoyed this Museum recently ahead of Hurricane Florence. The attendant was very friendly and definitely helpful. Here's a great, affordable activity if you want to get away from the oceanfront for an hour or so.
L Miller
I was disappointed in the size of the art museum. There were some interesting art pieces. There were also 2 that I would consider inappropriate for children. Glad it was free. We paused and looked at the art, and we're done in about 20 minutes.
Liz B
Lovely contemporary museum. Perfect on such a hot day and we enjoyed the art.
Kaye Wolf
Great way to spend a cold, wet afternoon. My 10 year old granddaughter loved the art displays and craft table. We hadn't left the building before she asked to come back another time. Also it was an easy stroll for those with mobility issues. Big bonus is the price. There is no charge. Donations are accepted and after seeing the museum you'll be happy to donate.
Shawn Minor
Really disappointed with admission to see art. Especially the fact that it offers military discounts, but nothing for locals, or the hard working citizens of the community. Also, would like to see more family oriented programming.
***Updated to 4-stars due to response from the owner.***
Christina Gaffrey
Intimate setting with local and international artists. Space available for weddings and other functions.
Perrethia Martin
I was the Wedding coordinator at a recent event in June 2022. I worked with Kay and her crew there. The day of the event was amazing. I received so much help and assistance. They were great! To everyone there that helped I thank you so much ❤️
Jennifer Rush
This museum is conveniently located close to the beach and busy attractions but in a wonderfully quiet cove of its own.The building is very nice with lots of windows and rooms that flow easily into one another. There's really only room for one large exhibit and a few smaller ones. But all of the art was very thoughtfully chosen and we were fortunate that the main exibit was by architect Maya Lin, featuring intelligent and meaningful sculptures of water that lead the viewer to think bout the force and flower of water with its awe inspiring ability to shape the earth we know. Would love to see other exhibits in the future.
Charlene Mara
MOCA is great for all ages. They do wonderful activities often. Getting to take my nieces here is always a fun time. Make sure you see the hanging glass sculpture.
Adriana VH
Always having amazing events for Military Families ❤❤ Thank you so much for your amazing childrens programs.
Charles Atcherson
Great place to learn about the ecosystem of Virginia. Unique nature art pieces from the artist. Place well kept. Staff was very friendly.
Lisa Remington
Wonderful exhibit on Shelter and
history. Beautiful museum.
Xylia Hollis
There are discounts for students, AAA, and seniors which is nice. It's a pretty small museum, but the art work was amazing.
Allan Pravit
Great place, it was not busy when we went, felt like we had it all to ourselves.
Valerie Litwinko
Great works but the museum was so much smaller than I expected, but it is great to have such quality exhibitions in the area.
Maddie Priest
Beautiful gallery. Came in never having been before, truly felt immersed in the artwork. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Definitely would go back!
Michael Griggs
We enjoyed our visit (and free parking, a VB rarity). Give yourself time to think about the art and contribute if you feel you should - their financials say it's a 501c3 so ask if a donation is tax-deductible.
Rebecca Blevins
We had a wonderful visit to the MOCA. We attended the student sculpture awards and reception and then toured the museum. The art by area students was excellent. Then we were guided through the main exhibit of Maya Lin's art by our lovely guide. She was very knowledgeable about the process and history of each of Lin's fantastic works. Do not miss this exhibit at the MOCA.
.
Steve Hainsworth
Awesome displays and exhibits. Grandaughter loves the Chihuly sculpture. Every trip to VA Beach we visit. Thanks to Goode Family Foundation for underwriting all admission costs.
Grace Sims
Great experience. The exhibits were amazing, the staff was super friendly and we had an awesome time. It takes about an hour.
Jack Soders
Very nice art museum with some very unique pieces. Would definitely recommend if you are visiting the area!
S M
Totally loved it, great exhibits!!!
Jonathan Wong
Free admission today! #Monitorium is a cool exhibit!
lizette hunt
Awesome museum! Great exhibits! Fun hands on area.
Christopher Ekornes
It's always nice to see the new displays
Overtime Hustlin
First visit. Had a good time, the interactive activities for the kids are cool. Staff is very friendly
Crystal Mabe
Wonderful museum. A lot of very nice art!
Jeremy
Awesome place for art lovers! Highly recommended!!
Jill Tatter
Such a wonderful museum! I took my 10yo granddaughter and she loved the entire museum. While It's not a "children's museum", it's great for families. They have an "activity room" for families with a place for parents to chill or draw while the kids get creative.
Baxter Bristow
Very beautiful art and thoughtful exhibit selections! We went during a transition of exhibits so we only got to see a limited selection and it as still a fun time. They were setting up for an event and it looked like a great place to host an event as well.
MBC
Great art, very personable staff.
Melki Dorceus
It was cool but way too short
Elizabeth Russell
While looking at activities to do in VA Beach this was one I found. I knew I had to go because I love museums and the arts! I was not disappointed. It was not expensive at all to tour the museum. I had such a relaxing time going around and reading about the art and artists. If I’m ever in VA Beach in the future I definitely plan to stop here again. I love that the exhibits change and there is always something new to see! I definitely recommend stopping and checking this place out!
James Eagan
My partner and I visit this museum every year while at VA Beach. We come for Memorial Day weekend. We really like the museum very much, and will continue to visit. We are both artists and we prefer a silent atmosphere while viewing the art. The young African American woman who was working there today was very friendly and nice. But... She was rather intrusive and persistent in her desire to ask me questions about what I thought about the art there. She also felt that it was necessary to tell me all about her thoughts about it. Three times she approached me while I was trying to enjoy my experience. Is the staff instructed to be so "chatty"? She was also talking pretty loudly to another employee while standing in the exhibition area. Is this really supposed to be happening? I left feeling annoyed.
Brittany Maine
The museum itself is good. Nice exhibits. We went to an event advertised for children of all ages. Did a craft which was lots of fun and then a scavenger hunt through the museum. Now, while I do understand this is an art museum and you're meant to look and not touch, when you send dozens of kids into a museum on a scavenger hunt you have to expect the little kids are not going to understand they can't touch everything...one particular employee seemed less than happy that kids were exploring art and told a mom if her child touched anything they'd be asked to leave immediately. Again...I get it's an art museum but if you're going to host kid friendly events maybe don't send them hunting for displays that they aren't allowed to touch. Definitely more fun without kids or with older kids who understand the don't touch rule.
Kevin Schoettlin
A good friend of mine got married and had her reception at this place. It was really nice as a venue. The food and service was great. As for the museum itself, it is really nice. If you're a fan of modern art, this place is definitely worth checking out.
Jessica Jennette
MocA is super fun!!! They had an interactive exhibit last time I was there!!! About 45 mins to walk though if you’re at a relaxed pace. Nice little distraction for the day. Sometimes they will have food trucks out front. Sometimes they have a coffee setup inside. You can’t take food or drink into the exhibit but nice for after
Keren Keziah Arga
A good place to go if you wanna get inspired. Lots of great pieces. I loved it there. It's free too.
Theresa Siever
Not a large museum but had a wonderful atmosphere with beautiful and thoughtful art pieces of all varieties.
Kathleen Smith
Very nice. Military Family day. Art workshop then on to the gallery. Grandkids old enough to appreciate. Gallery small enough to hold that interest. They don't ask yet make a donation when able so more can enjoy.
John Wheby
Very nice collection of contemporary art and an excellent way to spend a few hours while at VA Beach. The museum is not very big, so you can tour the entire collection in about 2-3 hrs. Plenty of free parking, but the museum charges a small admission fee. BTW - They have a Chihuly chandelier with it's own special room that is really amazing and worth the admission and time to see alone.
Donna Grethen
Neat and clean place, fun activities for the kids, although some of the supplies to participate in the activities weren't in stock. Was also nice that we could use the VA Zoo passes to enter at the time of our visit.
Alexis Tevlin
It cost about $15 for two adults (non student and non military). I wished to have seen a bit more artwork. They have activities for kids as well. Wasn't too busy when we went. Overall, nice experience and decent price!
Scott Schneider
On my visit the exhibits they had were interesting, but I was slightly disappointed in that from the size of the building it felt like there should have been a lot more to see. Despite taking time to examine and analyze much of the displays, in under an hour I felt like I had seen everything there was to see. I walked around thinking I must have missed something but it turns out much of the building is taken up by office space and they don't actually have all that much art on display.
Maddison Lozier
Always great art. We went when they were having a free entry day for the kids. We got to do crafts such as making buttons and weaving as well as making animal faces on paper plates. After we finished our crafts we went and looked at some of the installations. The glass piece is one of my favorites.
Addy Alago
Nice small museum. They had a high fructose exhibit up with a good variety of paintings, sculptures and mixed media exhibits. Lots crammed into a small venue. Good way to spend some time if you're in the area and like art
Ivan Matic
Very reasonably priced with the student/military discount and well worth the 2.5 hours I spent there. The works of Todd Schorr and Julie Heffernan (shown in many of the pictures) are thought provoking and detailed. The prompts provided by the museum were especially helpful since I was visiting alone, and the ARTlab was charming, good fun
isha foss
Beautiful architecture and gorgeous trees inside. Plus fresh, interesting exhibits.
June Moon
Went on a Sunday around 11 and it was wonderful! The exhibits were beautiful and one of the artists was there to explain his work. Will definitely return!
Sarah Poole
It's a cute little museum, a little smaller than I expected but very cool art. The only downside was that there was a large group of loud children at the time when I came and they were shouting and running around, making it really hard to enjoy the art.
SarahBeth Davis
Good museum. The collections were well done and well placed. Got in free with military discount (only that way for a small time, maybe this month, but was very nice). Good museum, wish I was doing more than just visiting once so I could see new exhibit.
The permanent Chihuly piece is fantastic, but I have a soft spot for Chihuly anyways.
Chris Webb
During my visit the majority of the exhibits weren't available, but I was able to spend time admiring the Dale Chihuly chandelier, and a recently added mural along with some Student Teacher art. Some lovely spaces.
Spencer
Whether you are an artist, art-enthusiast, tourist, or local this museum is about all you could hope for to have in your community. Virginia MOCA is recognized internationally for the quality of their exhibitions and the creative ways that they engage with people. Just about any big gallery in the US knows of Virginia MOCA, and that is largely due to the amazing people who work incredibly hard at the museum. It is one of the cleanest museums that I have been to. There is no permanent collection, so you see a lot of fresh new art each time they change exhibits. Don't take this museum for granted, it's a must visit for anyone. The cost of admission comes out to about 50 cents per WHOA!
Bekah Kelly
My daughter had her dance recital here with Amys School of Dance. It is a perfect location for a dance recital. It’s big enough to feel like it’s a “real” recital, or show however it’s still
Intimate enough to feel not overwhelming. It’s such a hidden gem!!!
Hailey Urick
The new exhibits are always amazing and beautiful. This is a small museum so the trip may be shorter for some. It's a great location for kids since there is always an activity room related to the exhibit.
Design' s the Limit
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a beautiful facility which offers visitors the opportunity to experience a wide range of art with new exhibitions all the time. They also offer events including the event which we attended to support the Virginia Glass Guild. We had a great time meeting everyone who attended and love being able to Support the Arts in our community. We recommend visiting and encourage aspiring artists to get involved in the local art scene.
david young
The museum is really cool! I went to see a performance there and couldn't explore, but I will definitely be going back to see all there is to see there. Great looking place and friendly staff.
Ju B
modernized almost a decade ago, they host fun events for the community and help with all the local talent, shows, and festivals. great group of volunteers, staff, and community. excellent variety of shows from bizarre to educational.
Ashley Rose Vasquez
This place is clean, organized, and not too expensive. Its amazing going there at different times of the year and seeing many interesting pieces of art. I like to come here and relax and take my time looking at different types of art.
G Matt
Very nice venue with a superb staff. Good location. Good parking. Very nice facilities. I assume that at times this location gets overlooked. But this is a great place to host certain events as well as being a great museum.
Joe Whittington
It's a smaller museum. I have been several times and the #andywarhol exhibit was super. Sometimes its photo art which I am not impressed with most of the time. The auditorium is calm and cool with good sound and comfortable chairs. I have wished for more art on some visits. Parking is good. When you arrive, drive down the road, till you see a building that looks like a small elementary school, that's it. Besure to visit the store and buy a MOCA coffee mug before you leave because, they are cool.
Nick Beach
Local and budding artists are displayed here. There were a couple of interesting pieces. I do feel that the vetting process could be a bit more stringent for the quality and validity of the works. Overall, good visit.
Sherry Baggett
It's a great local museum.
STEPHEN MIDDLEBROOK
The artist-in-residence is a great feature. Enjoyed talking to Ms. Lu!
Arrenvy Bilinski
Small but mighty contemporary art gallery. Currently have the Hi-Fructose art magazine exhibit. Well laid out and plenty of space to spend quality time with each piece.
Jacob Beach
Nice museum! Took small children (ages 6-8) and they still had fun and things for them to participate in. Fabulous Military Discount!
Deanna Patterson
My daughter had her wedding at Virginia Museum. It was beautiful and great staff!!

Perfect date night component! And perfect for art lovers! This is a small and intimate museum. They also have special events and activities here. Check their website for themes, dates, and times.

Beautiful, clean, interesting facility. The place was smaller than expected but I would be willing to go again when they get new exhibits.

Very nice museum, hopefully one day I'll be having some of my art in there as well 🌞 …
Susan McCarty
Interesting neat little place. Had some fun with the interactive station. Check out pamphlets before you go sometimes there are buy one get one coupons.
Christina V
Great museum but smaller than the Chrysler Museum. And you have to pay to get in. Been there a few times for school but would prefer the Chrysler over it.
Bryn Heil
The MOCA in Virginia Beach provides a place of contemplation. Contemplation of self, and the world around you. The art evokes a feeling of existentialism, matched with a level of awe when viewing the multitudes of exhibits. I've been here once before, and once again I have came back to see the art.
Melinda Coley
Virginia Beach is lucky to have the MOCA. The art exhibits are unique and interesting. The docent tours are fun and insightful. My school takes a field trip every year to the museum. As an art educator, it's always the highlight of the year for my students and myself. We even get to create an art project based on one of the exhibiting artists. Thank you from PPS! And of course, the amazing, permanent piece by Dale Chihuly is a favorite!!! The MOCA is a beautiful place to visit or have as a venue for a special occasion.
Sarah Mason
This place is great. Beautiful space, super cool exhibits, and encouraging kids to learn about art. Just way cool!
Delray Shaffer
Though I am not a fan of contemporary/ modern art, this was an enjoyable visit. I especially liked the technical interactive exhibits.
jeff weimer
Beat art museum in virginia beach. I have seen alot of art museums and this is the best one.we did clay art during my class back in 1995. My daughter just went there this year and she had just as much fun as i did years ago. This is the only art museum that i know of in virginia beach and it is the best one ive been too.

Beautiful museum. Been there to look at art and for a wedding. I like that they change the themes and showcase different art pieces. It's never the same when I go.

There is always something new to see here. It's a very nice space to view art and learn something new. There is a wide variety of art that can be viewed here. It's definitely an artistic center of Virginia Beach. Ilove coming here!
Ryan Wimberley
Took my 4th graders here for a field trip. The program was very well put together and the exhibits were interesting
Jeff W
Went there for a wedding. Super dope!
We were done before midnight though and I'm not sure if it was because of the venue or the bride and groom. (Being unsure of this part is the only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5)
Chloe Ledesma
The museum is clean and organized first thing that you will noticed, plus the price is fair and the staff were nice enough to entertain questions from my kids.
Jeannie Martinez Monaghan
Amazing Dale Chihuly Chandelier

Every now and then you need a little culture in your life. I decided to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, located on Park Ave just before you reach the boardwalk. I was curious about an exhibit it was holding this week. This was my first visit to the museum. There is no admission fee and plenty of parking.Upon entering the building, you could see it had great lighting and the building was spacious and airy. We were greeted by a host at the door . She explained to us the main exhibit that was taking place this month and also where to find it. We also received a map of the gallery. It's ok to take pictures which is always a plus and there are plenty of staff around to answer any questions. The most wonderful thing is that there are plenty of benches located throughout the gallery to stop and rest. To the left of the entrance is a small book nook. There you can stop in and take a look at some books on display that maybe of interest to you . This was a great week to visit. The museum was also holding a quilting exhibition. There they had several beautiful quilts hung by a group that could be viewed. The main attraction was by an artist name
Kara Walker called "Cut to the Quick" and LaToya Hobbs exhibits called Flourish. Both interesting and worth seeing. I enjoyed my day at the ar museum and certainly worth keeping an eye on for other exhibits in the future.
Lacey Wright
Great venue to have a wedding! Make sure to read fine print about catering and time limits for use of space. Tables and chairs were included in the price. We used the stage for the actual wedding & reception - banquet room/multi space with the trees in it for reception. Now my wedding was in 2015 but nonetheless lol wanted to share.
Julie Beauchamp
Terrific exhibits, particularly as they connected art to the inequalities/racial injustice present all around us in Southern VA.
