Reviews of National Museum of Transportation

Overall a very nice museum to visit. Mostly trains and cars, but there are other items as well. Some very unique pieces such as a fabulous custom car owned by Bobby Darin and the world's largest tanker car. They also let you get into the cab of a Big Boy. A couple of issues: The price is on the high side (not outrageous, but high) but then they continue to nickel and dime you with other activities. Plus a lot of the best train cars were not accessible to see on the inside, so you had to try to look through windows, which didn't work very well. Finally know that there is a lot of walking and climbing involved.

Everyone was very nice and it was a good way to spend an afternoon. Train ride was fun and for $5 you get as many rides as you want until the rides are done. Make sure to visit all the buildings (you can only see them all if you get a map). We missed two buildings and still spent 2-3 hours here. (We read all the signs and took our time too... It can be done quicker if you want)

Trains, cars and an airplane.its a great place for kids to learn about trains. The mini train ride was a bit short but if you buy passes to ride you get to ride all day. The trains are all outside and the old cars are indoors with AC. Bring a stroller for little ones. My boys really enjoyed it and didn't want to leave.

Impromptu visit as we were originally on our way somewhere else. My sons second time here but my first. I was very pleased with the knowledge one of the volunteers had on the subject of trains. He gave me a lot of awesome information and things to look into for when my son is older. Everywhere was clean and well kept.

It was amazing to see all the old cars and trains. I have to say the miniature train ride was pretty lame because it was so generic. There were some trains you can go into but most of them were just there for you to see and photograph. Cool and unique place to go in St. Louis.

We traveled across the country to see the big boy as we are seeing them all. We enjoyed seeing all the trains and discovering a GG1 was also there. The sibling to the daylight is there as well. Great museum. Wish the big boy was covered so it ages better.

This was my first visit and my family had a good time. There were so many trains that my boys could walk in and explore and others were they could look through the window and see inside. There's also this tug boat that they had a chance to walk around as well! And a plane! What an adventure for children! Surprisingly one of their favorite activities was this garden were they had to find painted rocks. The rocks was all so pretty and different. This place is great.

I had a great experience it is definitely a museum worth a repeat visit there is more than enough to see for a day.
The train ride was very pleasant it goes around the parking lot twice and you can stay on for additional rides. It cost extra in addition to admission.
The trolley ride was five minutes and it felt like it. A child commented out loud after the ride, "that's it."
Would recommend rides first leisurely stroll after.
Very nice peices on display.

Perfect for kids aged about 4-10. The number of train cars they have is astounding (a fair number, maybe 8 or so, that you can climb aboard and tour) and the indoor auto floor is fun, too. My kids enjoyed the mini-train ride (they do all day rides for $5 a person) but we only rode it once—not a ton to see on the loop around. If we go back, we’ll probably skip that portion.
The museum could *really* use a themed playground of some type. There’s a small asphalt area with some plastic push cars and two hand-crank train cars smaller kids can ride, but the museum would be really smart to take one of their grassy areas and build a large train-themed playground. It would enhance the experience for kids tenfold (my 9 year old enjoyed it but was hoping for more hands on experiences and a play area for kids her age).
Christy Johnson
Such an interesting way to spend a day! My favorite part was climbing through old locomotives, being able to touch the controls, and learning about the history of transportation in the St. Louis area. Highly recommended.
Dominique Grabbe
My son is a huge fan of Steam engines! Just passing through, its a great location to make a stop for someone into trains, planes, and automoblies! Not great for someone with trouble walking or using stairs.
It took us 2 hours to get through everything because there is so much information to take automobiles! You could easily spend half a day there. Neat to see the different train cars inside and out. Friendliest staff to encounter! Even the maintenence listened patiently to my sons bright-eyed train facts.
Dean Robinson
This place was a super cool place to visit while visiting family in STL. The amount of stuff they have to offer is insane. Got to learn a ton more about Missouri and the rest of the ways transportation have changed this country. I definitely recommend coming here!
Rachel Dillon
We took our two year old on a Wednesday. It was not too busy. We loved seeing everything! We spent the most time looking at the big trains (be prepared to walk a bit) loved the history and being able to go inside some of the trains was so fun!
Alice Shaffer
If you're into trains, planes and automobiles, this is the place to go! They have 2 planes, but the collection of cars and trains is phenomenal. There's even a tugboat you can climb on. Some vehicles are one of a kind. Well worth the admission!

The National Museum of Transportation and the Old Trains Collection just outside St. Louis, MO in Kirkwood takes you on an epic ride through locomotive history. The museum is appropriate and entertaining for people of all ages. Tickets to ride the train and walk the path through the Old Trains Collection are $15 for adults and between $6-$12 (I can’t remember exactly) for children. You board the train right outside museum doors near the gift shop. The train circles the perimeter of the exhibit. You can ride as many times as you like with the purchase of your tickets. If you don’t have the extra cash, no worries. There is plenty to see inside the museum including a nostalgic collection of classic cars from every era, a horse drawn carriage, and a well equipped and fully loaded (1:87?) scale model train display featuring none other than Thomas the Tank Engine. (Note: My son, who turned 5 years old that day, was in such awe at the model train it was a challenge to pull him away!)
For the grownups, and my personal favorite, is the train car library, a table full of discounted books ($1-5), plaques and displays, and plenty more to read and learn about the history of transportation in St. Louis. As a StL native, I feel pride and take interest in learning about local history.
The excitement doesn’t end there. An smooth and accessible tree-lined asphalt path guides you through a collection of the most impressive locomotives in history. *SEE PICS!*
There are several benches and well kept handicapped accessible family restrooms on the path. Along the way, board the street car for a short tour and a lesson on the history of public transportation in StL. Volunteers operate the trolly and rely on donations to keep the car up and running so drop a few bucks in the fare box.
You can climb aboard and explore many of the old trains they have on site. It’s an excellent adventure and I highly recommend you check it out.
P.S. You’ll receive a map for a treasure hunt before you start on the path. Find all the letters and solve the puzzle to win prizes. I wasn’t able to find them all but maybe you can!
Ross Lindsay
Spent most of a morning here and had an awesome time! There's so much to see - many many trains, but also a nice sized car exhibit, a boat, and more. Most of the trains are outdoors, so coming on a day when weather is favorable would be a good idea. Great price too for what you get to see. Definitely a must see for trainiacs!
Roy Sher
fun museum for kids that have a wide variety of trains and some cars, boats, and planes. there is a train ride available on a 1/3 scale train that loops around twice and a larger trolley train. there are some miniature trains as well with buttons for kids to press. lot of outdoor areas to walk around and see the various train types and can walk into some of them and see the engine rooms and all
parking fairly abundant and not too crowded overall even on weekend
Ryan Madden
Fantastic museum with several exhibits of old and classic cars, trains, and even a tugboat and a couple planes. Pretty reasonably priced, and the membership tiers seem worthwhile if you've got kids and are planning to visit more than once in a year. Plan on spending at least 2-3 hours here.
G MDNC
The museum was very interesting and had several very cool exhibits, as well as an amazing collection of trains and cars. Would recommend for a cool way to spend an hour or two.
Dennis Pohle
We enjoyed our stay at the museum. The primary focus is an immense collection of train engines and train cars. The train cars are outdoors, with many being undercover. Our tour guide did a great job providing many facts and history on the train cars. There are also two buildings with unique cars, including those built in St. Louis. There are some good entertainment options for small children. We visited about 3 hours.
David H
An awesome place. It had more then just different train cars. It also had some cool cars and displays. I would go back again. Great place to take your kids for a day out.
Verlyn Severson
The price for an adult ticket is quite Fair given the scope of all the vehicles on display and the extensive train collection. My only disappointment was something nobody could control which was going there on the hottest day of the year.
Tina Overkamp
There was no wait to get in. I haven't been since I was in elementary school and my fiance has never been. Its pretty awesome!! We enjoyed walking around and seeing all the things they have to show!!
Rosie Scott
The National Museum of Transportation is great for transportation nerds and lovers of trains, planes, and automobiles! It sits on 42 acres of well-maintained lawns and gardens and is separated into a higher and lower section. It has multiple exhibits, a visitor center, gift shops, cafe, and a train ride that is an extra fee, but you can ride it repeatedly! For my husband and I it cost $40 for admission and the train fee (train fee is $5 per person, adult tickets are $15). Gift shop prices were as expected (so slightly high). All museum staff were friendly, and John and I got to talking about the evolving technologies of electric cars. He sure knows his stuff! There is one interactive exhibit where you can get on a tugboat (larger than you'd think: see attached photos).
I loved this museum since I'm a huge nerd for transportation of all types. My husband also enjoyed the train ride and learning about historic cars and bikes, so even people who aren't as "into" this stuff will likely find something to like. It also sports two large, spacious parking lots and handicap accessibility by ramp or driving between its main two areas.
Highly recommended for tourists or natives interested in learning about and seeing many pieces of our shared history of transportation.
Keith P
Great visit. If you love trains and cars (and two planes) is a must see. There is quite a bit of walking and if it's hot or raining it may be hard to see everything as it takes quite a bit of room to store all these machines. Some are covered.
Cece Brunetti
We had a blast! Aiden D. gave us a super awesome tour, and has answers to all our questions. It really enhanced our experience! I highly recommend this place to anyone interested in cars or trains :)
brad worgan
Good place to visit whilst doing route 66, got plenty of exhibits and some you can get on some. Ranging from cars to trains
Roamin' Rich
Fantastic event space. We had a great time holding our Halloween party here for the Missouri Route 66 association.
Everything was clean and orderly. We will definitely consider this space again for our next event.
Kristy Godi
Some Mom friends and I recently visited the National Museum of Transportation with kids ranging in ages from NB-5 years. We all had a delightful visit! The kids loved climbing on the trains and exploring, and we all enjoyed the train rides! We brought our strollers and wagons for when their little legs got tired, as there is a fair bit of walking. But they all fell asleep instantly on the car ride home! Definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the area!
Angela Young
My son is a huge train enthusiast and he loved every minute (the whole day) we spent here! They have other forms of transportation, but he was very focused on the trains. He rode the train multiple times. We enjoyed riding the trolley too. We had a great time!
Slade H
I always love coming here. Have since I was a young child with my grandpa. It's gotten bigger since then. I always love seeing Big Boy and all the other locomotives. The people there are always incredibly kind and knowledgeable. I'm glad I can now take my own kid to see these magnificent trains.
They have an awesome train ride now too, definitely worth riding!
Jess P
This was a highlight of our trip to St. Louis. If you or your children like trains or automobile history, this is a worthwhile stop. Great signage explaining everything, several train cars you could walk through, trolley rides are free, and the volunteers are very friendly. There's a lot to see and a fair amount of walking, but much of it appeared handicap accessible. Our family definitely enjoyed the experience.
Chris Heeley
Very nice museum. The volunteers were friendly and informative. There is lot of walking but the pathways are all accessible and wheelchair/scooter friendly. The train ride takes you for two laps around the lower complex. We went during the middle of the week in October and were disappointed the kid's push cart ride wasn't open.
Mitch
Fun family day. There is a surprisingly large number of things to do here. We have littles and there was an activity area that they loved. I learned a lot about trains. It was super hot when we went but there was enough indoor areas that we were able to keep cool in the heat. Ohh and free parking is always a plus.
Sangeeth Praharsha
Great place for train lovers. We went with 3 year old and he enjoyed it a lot. Lots of train models from different eras.
Mark Zeman
Train lovers young and old will go crazy over the many historical trains and cars. Little ones get a kick out of riding the miniature train too! There are two indoor sections, one for old automobiles and the other for train artifacts. Great family outing.
Arthur Williams
Very fun place to take the kids to look at the various modes of transportation. Some highlights included the mini train, and the train yard. Will have to visit again when the kids as are older, as there is a lot of stuff to read. If you participate in the kids hunt, be prepared to look all over the entire place!
jessica gaynor
Great place to visit with kids. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great day had by all. Definitely recommend buying family pass in advance (online)
Shaun Travs
A good way to spend a few hours. This place is geared more towards trains and this introduces my biggest gripe with the displays. Out of the several dozen train cars and locomotives here, one can only walk inside 4 or 5 of them. Many of them seemed done up nicely inside but weren’t accessible unless you’re in a school group or a tour. And even without being able to walk inside, I kept wishing I could see the insides of some of the locomotives with either a raised walkway or photos on a sign. At the back of the covered train display area was a fairly interesting looking streamlined diesel train which had no signs. That was a letdown. Some other displays were far off the walkway and tucked away and it wasn’t clear if guests are allowed to walk closer to read the signs or not. Overall a good museum, an impressive collection, and I definitely learnt a lot about trains.
Craig Mason
Took grandson to visit here. The kids LOVES trains. He had a great time climbing on all the ones you can climb and sit on, riding the trolley, and riding the train around. I'm sure we will be taking him here again.
Kenzie Popken
Nice museum to walk through for an afternoon. Kid-friendly interactive area. Also has a train to ride around the grounds. Interesting trains and cars. Overall, fun activity for families for a few hours.
Ali Bakir
One of the best museum experiences I've had.
They have a one-mile train ride
They also have classic cars
Lissha Westmoreland
I found this museum the last day of our trip. Beautiful and very informative museum. Make sure to ride the trolley. Their volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable as well friendly. I would love to return, they had a lot of engines you can walk through. Definitely go with your kids or grandkids.
Eric
Nice museum, mainly trains with some cars and a plane
G P Chakraborty
One of the best car & railway museums I have visited. Worth spending a morning!
Gary Blakely
Look, they have the Ghia designed Chrysler gas turbine car. That alone is worth the price of admission, but THEN there's sooo much more. Take your camera because there are a ton of interesting photo opportunities amongst the trains. More if you go in deep and take your time.
Pay for the mini-train ride. Don't take yourself so seriously. This is your moment to just wallow in the youthful joys of a mini-train complete with an engineer, an accomplished entertaining conductor, and a reliable station agent.
Also, the bathrooms are tidy and there are snacks, so what more do you want?
marc alex cool nightmares
I love it. I'll definitely keep visiting. Went there with a friend we loved it. If you're adventurous, you love history, you like to explore things. That's definitely the place for you 😀 the trains, the cars, the airplanes are are awesome! Good exhibition! It's really cool!! …
Pooja Pandey
My visit was really good kids enjoyed and even learn about vehicles vintage cars , trains trolley. Everyone is friendly Wonderful experience. Highly recommend
Nicole Klassen
We had a great time with kiddos from 2-7. They loved the train ride, model train, and play room. Definitely worth it for a mini day trip.
Mrs. R
Excellence embodied. This state of the art museum makes lasting memories for all ages.
Christina Courtney
Enjoyed the train ride but got rained 9n before we could go see all the other trains. Did get to see the lil train model that moves on the tracks. My lil one was mad when we had to leave.
Shelly Gunderson
I visited around the 4th of July weekend. I was very impressed with this museum. There is quite a lot on display of various types of transportation. Lots of train related which I really enjoyed. If anything there was too much because some of it was pretty tight together and a bit hard to get a good view of. In general, the displays were very nice and the grounds were gorgeous, lots of wildflower gardens. The staff were nice and friendly. The miniature train was running and looked very nice. I would definitely visit the museum again in the future.
Robert Wagnon
This unusual museum has very interesting vehicles. They have machines I would never guess had been made. Cars, trains, boats, special machinery. And history for everything.
Ronald Wyatt
The National Museum of Transportation had a lot of beautiful Steam Trains and old Cars. I enjoyed visiting this place and highly recommend go there.
Stephanie DiDonato
Love love love TNMOT!!! My son is obsessed with trains and he loves coming here. Train rides, big trains, and the model train set ups during the holidays are wonderful.
David Hunter
Trains, trams, tracks and other transportation. Terrific time!
Come check out this multi acre transportation museum with everything from antique cars and old trains to airplanes, jets, tractors and road repair equipment. Ride on a fun miniature train for a mile and a half around the property! Display areas include hold firetrucks, police cars, taxi cabs and operating train sets. There is a wall with a timeline of transportation history.
Climb on full-size antique trains and explore the caboose and engines.
Super fun and well worth a visit! Allow about six hours to visit this great location.
Ashley Cruise
Such a great place to go, whether you have kids or not. Great history about the trains. A fun train ride. Much more to it than I thought! My little guy loved it. A small car museum as well. Super, super amazing. The resotartions are amazing. Great place. I would highly recommend!
Iris T
We had so much fun. The ride was awesome. Even adults enjoyed seeing all these historical trains. If you want to take kids to the creation station, be sure to check their schedule online. It only opened the first and third Sunday of the month in the weekend and morning from Monday to Friday.
Rob Bilbruck
My kids love it here! So many things to see. They really enjoyed the train ride around the property and the car museum. Going inside and standing next to the Goliath size steam engines was also a great experience. They have a nice snack area and toy store as well.
Bryan Rupp
Family friendly fun. Wonderful interactive exhibits. Especially good for children.
Krishna Chittari
The museum exceeded our expectations. Pleasant place to see and know about old trains. Kids loved the train rides.
Harun Hadžagić
Lovely place with great thing to see. I suggest going on a cooler day since most of the exhibitions are outside. A great train ride is also available. The speakers on the train for the guide should be a bit louder I had a hard time hearing the guide. Other than that everything was perfect.
Dave Sunderland
One of the best museums ever.
Trains - Check!
Cars - Check!!
Train cars you can enter - Check!!!
This museum is well done in both the presentation of displays and the information plaques.
It's more than worth a visit if you like cars and it trains.
Frank S
Very well-kept nicely laid-out Museum. Depicts many forms of transportation from boats to trains to cars. Extremely large are you plan to spend at least three to four hours if not more. Very inexpensive All Things Considered.
Kim Poulsen
I visited this place, with my brother, and nephew last year, as part of our road trip across the U.S. I am a big fan of the movie "Convoy" from 1978 with Kris Kristofferson. In this movie he drives around in a particular truck, a Mack. I heard somewhere that the truck is on display in this museum. I wrote an email to the museum, which I found on their webpage, asking if it was true that they had this truck on display. The museum never replied back to me which was a bit disappointing. We decided to visit the place anyway, since we were in the area anyway. They did not have the truck on display, and the three employees I asked did not even know about the movie. That is their loss he he. I wonder where the truck is. I am glad we visited the museum anyway, as there are a lot of interesting locomotives on display here, and the atmosphere surrounding them is very cool. It's also a very clean place, you can see that it is being kept very tidy. The focus is mainly on trains but there is a building with a lot of old cars which is quite interesting as well. Also very tidy. The museum souvenir shop was not very big, and did not really have any small scale models of old cars, or trains, I could buy. We enjoyed it here anyway even though we did not get to see the "Rubber Duck" truck.
Michael Fishel
It was great and my daughter loved it too ❤️
I have to go back to see the big trains. She got tired before we got back there.
Tabitha Waldron
So much to see at this museum! There is a mini train to ride around the grounds. And then ton of place to look at and explore old trains, rails, cars, and cabooses. There is a whole building dedicated to classic cars. And there are several planes on display. My son had a blast! There is so much ground to cover that we could have spent all day there, but we only had a couple of hours.
They have a Cafe there, or you can pack a picnic and eat near your car (they don't allow you to bring outside drinks or food into the buildings).
They apparently also host birthday parties, and my son was asking about a party at the museum for his next birthday.
Ted Betzler
Really neat place for anyone interested in trains - both kids and adults! My 3-year old loves the "Big Boy" engine they have on display near the back. We have seen videos of 4014, but you really have to see one in person to appreciate how big these really are!
TMZalabak
Took the family and had a great time. Son is into trains and loved seeing all the different trains they had to offer. Everyone was friendly and you can tell they enjoy what they do. They have a streetcar you can ride in and the volunteers tell the history of streetcars as well with a miniture train ride telling more history. Had a great time and will be coming back.
Palina Akhramchuk
I love trains, so I really liked this place. Here you will find old and not so much trains, retro cars and some other things. This place has its own special atmosphere. Everything is very interesting and informative. You can make many beautiful photos (if you have blog in instagram (or just blog) you can take beautiful photos ). I want to find a similar place (museum) with trains in Europe (tell me, if you know)
Holly
Awesome place to visit. Check Groupon for discounts! My two year old is obsessed with trains and this really impressed him. Many trains you can go through them. They also have a boat and lots of really cool automobiles. Plus a mini train the whole family can ride!
Tyler Ginez
I went alone, it was ok. A few cool old vehicles and a train. Cool gift shop/souvenir shop. Awesome information all over the walls and in cases. Not much to do other than that for adults unless you bring your kids. I seen a activity area for kids and they offer a small Choo Choo train for a price unsure of how much or how far.
Jason Nettles
Nice collection and displays of mostly railroad and automobiles.. It's worth the time if you like transportation history..
Suresh Ramsaroop
Lots of great trains and cars. But need to have a shorter path from the trains on the top of the hill to the tug boat. It is a long walk. They should have steps on the hill closer to the tug boat.
Nate Allen
Great museum full of amazing Transportation pieces from trains planes automobiles and even a few motorcycles! You can also ride the electric trolley for free and it's only $10 for adults to enter the musuem!
Matthew Bergholt
A great place to spend the day with kids and family! Be sure to get there early on weekends for good parking and access to all of the trains. The only negative is that some of the trains are starting to decay and exhibits may be closed without warning for repair. Otherwise a fun outing in Saint Louis!
Chris Cook
This place is amazing every time we go there. Great for adults and kids. You could easily spend the whole day there. Check out the tunnel and then walk the back alleys to see all the old, broken down trains; just as cool as the refurbished ones.
Andrea Lange
The staff here were so nice. They must really like their jobs. My son and I had a great day at the museum. It was a rare opportunity to be up close to so many amazing cars and trains.
Karen Kluesner
I took my 20 month old grandson. It is perfect for younger children. We rode the train, played on the little tike playground, and creative room. All of this is very children friendly. I ended up purchasing a membership because I know we will be back!
Rey Rice
Great transportation museum and collection of old steam locomotives. A must for any locomotive enthusiasts!!!
Matt Terry
Fantastic collection in an historic spot for US railroading (1st tunnel west of the Mississippi) in the original transcon jumping off point: St. Louis, Missouri. They have more locomotives if more types than maybe any other collection, going back to the Civil War amd earlier. A large collection of passenger cars, including stagecoaches, unusual freights, cabooses, the biggest snowplow the UP ever shoved, and it is HUGE!), a Big Boy (also effing HUGE!), the Rock Island Aerotrain (the ugliest train ever, imho), and a luxury officer's heavyweight Pullman. For me the real treasures were the streamlined cars, a fantastic Burlington diner, original Mopac Eagle Observation car, and the same from the G, M&O's Abraham Lincoln, and a Northern Pacific duplex sleeper. Also thry have some of the most unusual, and iconic, automobiles ever wrenched together. (Bonus, they sell Ted Drewes' Frozen Yogurt, a local fave!). Focussed on the kids, it has a nice park train and interactives. Go, you'll love it.
Kenny Tomlin
This place was awesome the best way to describe it is you got to go see it they had vintage trains by the dozen vintage cars anything transportation on oriented they had it even world war II planes and stuff
Michael Quagliano
Great displays. Informative. Needs a bit more upkeep but they do well with the funds they have.
Roger Peter
The National Museum of Transportation is a gem in St. Louis' must lists of should visit. I wonder why it isn't as popular with visitors or those blogs which highlight St. Louis places to visit.
This is a locomotive and beautiful vintage car haven! Engi-nerd heaven at St. Louis.
This apparently is a private property and run by a host of volunteers since quite some time. They have an electric street car older than 100 years for a journey into the past of STL and back with a narrative all along. You should try and swing by when you can. It'll be worth your time.
Raymond's Trains
Very nice place ot see if like railroad trains. They definitely need more room for better equipment display.
Andrew Ricketts
Best place for train fanatics!! You can go in them! Awesome staff and train rides..
Craig Ulmer
$64 for 2 adults and 2 kids with the train pass. It is a great one time place with some nice classic cars and trains. Honestly will not go back due to it not IMO worth the cost. There are too many free and cheaper places with more interaction in St. Louis.
Jason Hephner
Very nice museum. Some rare cars and awesome display or trains
Adrien Everest
Great place to take the kids and anyone who loves cars and/or trains. It was so much bigger than I expected!
BNSF 9206
I visited on a Sunday and it was fascinating, especially the retired railroad artifacts as I'm a train enthusiast. My top three favorites are UP Big Boy steam locomotive # 4006, UP EMD DDA40X # 6944, and N&W 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive # 2156. I visited this museum about 11 years ago but I didn't remember everything that was on display here so it was nice to finally make it back. This particular day was extremely hot and humid however so I hope to pay another visit on a cooler day to appreciate everything more.
Cookie
OMG we had so much fun today! Charlie, one of the greeters, gave my son a tour behind the setup and controls. My son loves trains and he had so much fun walking around on the inside of about 5. Long day.
charles shanor
Had a lot of fun there didn't get to explore everything because we ran out of time but was there with a big group
Corey Whitworth
You can spend the better part of a day here taking in all the engines, train cars and motor vehicles they have on display here. Not to mention being able to spend time with children riding the small guage railroad around the premisis and in the Creation Station.
Coleman P
The National Museum of transportation is a cool place to go with your kids or by yourself if your into antique cars or plan to take a trip its worth it there is a lot to do for the kids there but its worth it for 12 bucks if you want to see some very nice antique car . The people there were very nice and helpful
frank orris
Awesome place for the kids 1-80 for the love of trains
Amy C
I have been bringing my kids here since they were 2 and they just absolutely love this museum! I'm not going to lie, I am a huge fan as well! I love getting to explore the massive amounts of trains, see the classic cars, and ride the mini train!! FYI, around Black Friday they run a special for a discount on gift cards and you can use the gift cards towards your membership!
Athena L
Very nice, mostly outdoor museum. Give yourself plenty of time as they're is lots too see. The volunteers are super knowledgeable and happy to chat.
Joshua Brown
Wonderful place to visit. It is kid friendly with lots to see and do. Also tickets are cheap and the food and drinks dont cost an arm and a leg like most places.
Jim Snyder
Interesting place, good variety of cars, lots of trains a few of which you can go in. The small train ride around the lower campus was fun. Definitely designed for kids, lots of walking.
Steven Keen
The volunteers there are wonderful and very knowledgeable. Great place to see many antique trains some dating back to the mid 1800's along with some neat automobiles with a nice little group of vehicles that were made in Saint Louis.
Peter Sheren
Great train and vintage automobile collection. They also host children's events and parties. Nice family environment.
Brandie Elliott
Amazing museum! The Big boy is worth seeing! I would wear comfortable shoes there is lots of walking. It rained when we went so the train ride was closed. It is full of kid activities and a snack place with popcorn.
Drew Carter
Our trip had several details
Cannonball Productions
Love this place I would recommend you check the temperature outside before you go ‘cause you’ll be outside most the time check the weather. They have a great car collection but the mostly have trains some trains you can go on and ring the bell and pull on the throttle I would recommend this place for small children but if your like me and love trains well this is the place admission is a lot but I have a season pass which cost $89 with the season pass you get free admission to the museum and the miniature train.

Becky Hansis-O'Neill
Really great if you're into trains. I especially recommend seeing the "big boy." Could use a little more interpretation.
Michael Carrier
We loved this place! We were there on a nice cold November afternoon. Planes, trains and automobiles galore. I airplane that I saw though.
Tammy Seger
Transportation museum was great! Charlie in the automotive building was extremely informative about the automobiles and clearly loves his job! Amazing restoration on the old trains.
Molly Hukle
This place is great for all ages. They have some exhibits you can climb on. Tons of trains.
Warren Hudy
Great place to take in some history of the transportation industry.
Would have liked to see some planes and boats, but it was very cool and worth checking out.
Joe Taylor
This is one of the largest collections of locomotives and rolling stock in various states of restoration. Kid friendly with unlimited miniature train rides around the property. Landscaping is well done to provide a nicer backdrop to the amazing mechanical marvels from the late 1800s through 2000.
Kyle Platz
Pretty cool museum. Kids liked it with not too much complaining. Lots of neat trains. Keep up the good work.
Colleen Dwyer
Always a fun activity for train lovers. On certain days they have a trolley you can ride for no extra cost, check their calendar. It is extra to ride the train that goes around the park with a tour guide giving information about trains, but you can ride it as much as you want with only the one charge unlike other places. Can go inside some trains, that is always the highlight for us. A car museum is there too. Don't miss the tug boat you can go up on in the back parking lot area. Since it is mostly outside and involves lots of walking plan your trip for nice weather days.
Adam
Lots and lots of trains, but you can only get on one or two. There are some cool older cars, a boat and a plane.
Kenneth Smith
Amazing collection of historical items and most are operational. I have a friend who worked there and he is very interesting too.
Finn Greenberg
This is a great place for people who like trains. My only issue is the trains can get really hot in the summer but no one can control that.
Don DeFreese
Always an enjoyable visit. They are constantly improving the exhibits. One of our grandsons favorite places to visit. The best deal is the family membership. It definitely pays for itself.
Marc the tf2 scout
Nyc steam engine that escaped pearlman's chainsaw. (Yes its a history in the dark ref, and it was me who made that alfred e pearlman account as a joke). Edit: if i can get cash il visit. As i live in canada XD.
D W
Much nicer than I was expecting. It's quite expansive, everything is in excellent shape, and all of the volunteers are both knowledgeable and friendly.
Yougo “Yougomom” Mom
We visited the museum on a Saturday afternoon, it was pretty quiet. There are lots of trains to look at and some to get in for kids and train buffs. There is also a very interesting collection of cars, one plane and one boat. Almost all of the vehicles to see are outside so plan ahead with the weather.
William Turner
I've been visiting this museum since the mid '60s. It has a remarkable inventory of equipment from all over the country. This sets it apart from other similar museums which have more regional collections. It has been expanded and improved over the years. I recommend that anyone with even a marginal interest in railroad equipment visit this museum. There is a collection of automobiles, trucks, and fire engines as well. The extent of the collection is impressive.
Justa Guy
Wonderful place. My wife and I brought my 2yr old and we all loved it. A train ride and a trolley ride plus many trains and cars to look at. You could walk through many trains and there was a guided tour to walk through even more. We will be going back to take the guided tour soon.
Siddhesh .P
Good collection of automobiles and trains on display here. The restoration is pretty good on majority of the vehicles. I was more interested in their railroad collection. The place has a neat collection of steam locomotives, old freight consist, some old diesels and electrics. The highlight is the UP Big Boy, the largest steam locomotive on display, and has access to it's cabin too, which is labelled well as to which valves and levers functioned accordingly. It is a treat if you are a railway enthusiast and have read about the history of US railroad operations.
Paul Lis
Such a great place to bring children of all ages to see amazing automobiles and trains.
April Albrecht
Amazing place for the family to explore and learn about transportation! Old trains that you can explore and even walk through an old tanker car! Sit in a engine seat and walk through a caboose! Ride an old trolley car, a miniature train and other fun things for the kids! It is a national museum and well worth every penny of admission!
Catie M
Everyone I take here loves it. My toddler loves riding the little train and getting up into the big trains. It's never super crowded and nice and open so kids can run and be a little wild without disturbing anyone. It's stroller and kid friendly. The car building only has ropes and no barriers between the public and the cars so beware of little ones that may duck under and try to touch. Great places for picnicing and multiple family restrooms in each building. The creation station is wonderful for babies through preschool age with so much to do. The prices for membership, creation station, and the train rides can't be beat. The amount of detail and care that the staff and volunteers have put into this museum is clear.
Gene S
I've enjoyed a span over 50 years of visiting here, and when I think about it I just go visit there again? There's a lot of legendary energy meandering around the grounds here, for those aware that is. Never know what you're going to discover walking around old trains or who you might bump into?
Nathan Toal
Fun place to run around! We have been here several times. Losts of space to run out energy climbing on trains and riding them. Their Christmas this year was definitely 5 big stars! We will be back every Christmas. They had reindeer! Live reindeer! Super cool for the kids and they had Mr and Mrs Claus.
Robb Riehn
Great place to spend an afternoon with the family. A must see for any train fan.
Casey Goldschmidt
We love the transportation museum! I suggest going around Christmas time to see the model trains. There are trains to climb on and a miniature train to ride, make sure to buy the admission that includes the ride. Sometimes the trolley is running also, which is very fun.
Robert Jeffers
This place is awesome. If you like trains, cars, and a jet, I would definitely recommend going.
Vic Valdez
The Gateway Hudson Essex Terraplane Club had their orphan car show here. Was a nice day.
Nate Dame
The kid-sized-train was a huge hit. Time of historic time to explore - look forward to going back on a day that's not so hot!
Kurt Valdez
Highly recommended! This is an excellent museum with a variety of exhibits to enjoy. Multiple trains including a few you can get in and explore, quite a few cars (my favorite is the Chrysler Turbine), a little train and restored trolley you can ride, and a variety of events throughout the year. We are members and enjoy visiting the museum at least a few times a year.
Ghost
Great place to see some awesome history up close and personal. I never realized how big some if the trains were.
Thatcher Clayton
Was friendly for kids employees were very helpful and nice the place was amazing take a trip there sometime
Dustin Bower
The amount of trains there was impressive.
David Smith
First time. Nice place. Everyone is friendly and our family had a good time. A little pricey so take advantage of the package deals.
Dee Burton
I brought my husband a hot rod head here, it was amazing! The Chrysler Turbine with the jet engine was his fafvorite. I fell for the Dadia lol -- The staff was great and the price was not bad at all. Definitely worth the trip :)
Janet Keller
We were unfortunately a little disappointed with our visit today. It was such a cool place online but we found that it wasn't as exciting for our son as we'd hoped. The Creation Room was definitely a highlight and worth the $2/person, even though I don't like the add-on pricing system in general. There is a beautiful walkway to the outdoor trains which was really neat. There's a small area of planes/space travel and some cars plus another car building that we didn't enter. The miniature train set inside the main building is cool but we'd hoped for more than just this one. The hand train exhibit was also cool but for kids 40'' or taller which disqualified us (and also coats extra). There's a train ride around the park (costs extra) which we didn't do but seems popular. There are 2 small gift shops and a small cafeteria.
Josiah Sansone
This is a fantastic place to bring the whole family. I've been coming here since I was little and it's still my favorite museum in the St.Louis area. Tons of cool and interesting trains and train cars for you and your kids to learn about and see. As well as lots of little interactive things scattered around the grounds. The car displays are all really cool and intriguing. The crown jewl of the place has to be Big Boy 4006, it's the most powerful steam locomotive ever made and one of only 8 surviving in the world. Again I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a cool place to check out for a few hours.
Jonathan Chaffin
Enjoyed being a part of history
Ke3bz
One of the coolest museums we've been to. With a train ride (extra fee) and the car show that day, this ended up being hours of fun. Make sure you read the map and know where you're going because it's a nice walk up a decent hill before it branches off to the different sections. Trains to go inside, multiple buildings with informative historical displays, bunch of old vehicles and machinery. In the courtyard, a band was playing and a Barbeque Food Truck was selling food. This was a great family outing destination we are jealous we don't have back home.
Katie V
We visited yesterday, because my 5-year-old absolutely loves trains. Admission was reasonably priced, and the staff and volunteers were so knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. There were so many trains, and I was pleasantly surprised that visitors could even explore the inside of some of them. Next time, we will go earlier in the day so that we can see the whole museum (we just focused on the trains.)
Axel Edgren
Sweet, simple, accessible. Many impressive and well-preserved engines and cars. Worth the visit!
sagiv levi
A must-see place for both car enthusiasts and history buffs. Please note that car shows are only open on weekends
Liza Daigle
Visited Museum with family and was very satisfied with displays.
Michael Peters
Great attraction for young and old alike. Definitely lots of little kids, but there's plenty for adults too, including a nice exhibit dedicated to auto manufacturing in St. Louis.
Suzanne Taillon
Whether you have a kid who loves trains and vehicles or you're just looking for something different to do, this place is awesome! They have tons to look and and walk through inside and out, so wear comfortable shoes. There are also tons of activities available, creation station sessions for kids 1-5 is totally worth the few extra dollars, miniature train rides for all, and so much more. Check out the site.for details. The membership is honestly the best thing to do if you plan to go twice in a year.
Tobias Mylar
American History Live in Color!
Real and true historic evolution of transportation in America....
Perfect for all ages....
Ken Hasekamp
Another fantastic visit. New signs give deeper insight into many of the displays.
Rafael Perez
Awesome Museum trains , trollys ,cars, aircrafts and a boat. I need to come back again. Wish you could go inside the train wagons .
Karsten H Kessler
Amazing unique place. Lots of history and one of a kind artifacts. Take a guided tour! A labor if love for all the people that work there. It shows.
Mike Koenig
I absolutely love this museum! It sure helps I'm already a big rail-fan. But it's great they have more than just trains (hence transportation museum). If you're getting a little warm on a hot day, duck inside the a/c of the automobile center and check out a large collection of classics and antiques many built in St. Louis.
Highly recommend for families and anyone interested in learning about the trains, and other vehicles, that shaped and built America.
David Evans
The staff at our hotel told us about this museum, I had heard of it, we were looking for some place to take our almost 3 year old grandson. We all enjoyed it! He loved looking at the trains and the train ride, and the fire trucks. There was a Saturday display of older trucks collectors had brought it, as well as old hit and miss engines. Emergency vehicles of all sorts were there that particular day. Highly recommend, a nice half day visit with most of it being outside. Great place for young and old alike!
Sarah
Absolutely amazing place! The whole family enjoyed it, we'll definitely 100% be coming back!
Marie D.
An absolute blast, a little pricey but well worth it! Everyone who works there is very kind, courteous and fun! Highly recommend. We took a 2 year old and she had a blast seeing the big trains and climbing on them.
Christopher Parker
Great place for classic cars trains or anything that has to do with transportation. They have expanded a lot since I was there as a kid so there is a lot more stuff to do. Great place for the family and kids
Kevin Owens
A lot of trains and vehicles to see. Fun for the whole family!
Joe Kosednar
Great for anyone interested in cars, trains or industrial vehicles.
We loved it.
Dror Stanitsky
It's a good place to spend a couple of hours when the weather is nice. Very dependent on good weather. I have two young kids, 5 and 3, so if it's cold or windy I wouldn't recommend it. There is also a creation center that is awesome for younger children. Only problem is that demand is higher then supply - due to Covid they limit the number of people and time.
J. Reynolds
What a fascinating museum! We enjoyed the displays, especially in the auto exhibit building. I wish we'd been able to walk into the Pullman train car, but we were able to peek through the windows to see what the tiny sleeping rooms were like. The kids and I had fun imagining we were taking a train trip in the 1800s.
D B
This place is great if the weather is good as it's mostly outdoors. The grounds are well kept and make wandering around looking at decades of transportation history all the more pleasant. You can even walk through somen of the trains. The staff are friendly, and there's someone who will give you info about the cars in the indoor car section.
Patricia Fisher
I do wish we could go in all of the trains. The glare on the window does not allow for great pictures. The kids area was truly not worth the money that was charged. We stayed in there for about 10 minutes. I believe that should be included in the price of admission. Nothing was open outside and the admission price should reflect that by discounting the tickets.
Tony Priester
So much to see, 70+trains, cars all for viewing. You can even get in several of the trains to really get the experience
Joshua Guiher
Worth the visit for history buffs, or those with kids
Waynesville Resident
We regularly passed the exit to this “gem” for over 25 years before finally deciding to visit. This place is very well done with very friendly and helpful staff members. Probably the most visitor friendly railroad museum that we’ve ever seen. The various displays, to include aircraft and automobiles as well as trains and public transportation, were incredibly well done! Many interactive activities as well. We did a self-guided tour, but found staff members readily available to answer questions in all areas of the museum. We spent a little over an hour and a half In the museum but could have spent many more hours exploring this place. Highly recommend
Jin Zou (阿瑾)
It's one of two national museums of transportation. It is very beautiful and definitely worth of the time spent here! You can see big selections on old cars and trains!
Brian Woods
They over charge for entrance when we pay taxes to fund them all other museums are at least free to enter
SleepyCritter
Staff are very kind and personable - the museum was wonderful to explore! If you have little kids, would suggest a stroller or wagon, sun protection, and something to drink/snack
Danielle Hammond
Entire experience was amazing! Very clean buildings, staff nice and cheery, everything decorated for Christmas beautifully! I definitely plan on returning but next time without the kids so I can take my time and read all interesting facts around!
Jeremiah Griffin
Excellent museum for the automobile and train guy in your family. We bought a membership even after being there. Excellent vacation stop and a reason to travel to St. Louis beyond the arch!
Jeremy Seibel
Loved seeing all the railroad history including a "Big Boy." Friendly and knowledgable staff, and personalized tours depending upon your interests.
Alberta Harris
Very large. Many exhibits. Best when not raining.
Teri Jefferies
My father wanted to come here to see everything. We all enjoyed it.
Carol Yunker -
Very kid-friendly and staff was fun and friendly right down to the gentleman working in the Cafe! We specifically came to see the Big Boy.Thumbs down on 4006 merchandise. Shirts only up to size 2x and hardly anything else but hats featuring the Big Boy. We've seen 7 of the 8 remaining ones and this shop had the least merchandise we've seen. Missed sales opportunitiy. Other thumbs down...unlike the Big Boys we've seen like in Dallas you're not allowed to climb on the toys. Is a Big Boy going to break if you climb on it for a picture? Otherwise. Very enjoyable afternoon!
Robert Hervey
Massive display of historic trains and cars. Christmas model train display was awesome. My 2 year old loved every minute.
sunny w
“ Friends , please do not loss the membership’s card. They will charge you. Yes, Even you are a member, Even it isn’t expired .” It will be charged if want to ride miniature train. And maybe another activity too, I do not know.
The staff suggested me to renew the membership, if don’t want to be charged. So I decided to write a review to let you guys know it. Take care of your membership’s card.
It is very nice place. My little son is crazy about this place, that is why We have been a member for a couple of years. Nice place to let kids for fun and learning.
Robert and Pam Cunningham
Wonderful place.
Pleasant people, we encountered one docent. He was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. All staff encountered were nice.
This is massive area mostly outside. A lot of walking. Basically three enclosed museums with the majority of trains outside and in covered open areas.
Half of the trains are covered but you have to walk in the open to get to them.
Two parking lots. Kids station and activities are on the lower parking area. For the kids lower area has hand crank ride on train, butterfly garden, amusement park size train to ride and large in door activities center.
2nd parking lot gives you access to the automobile building and the majority of the trains. It is all uphill walking for the train displays. Lots of engines and rolling stock.
Did I mention lots of walking. I struggle with the walking but I made it.
Suggestion follow the handicapped arrows for lesser grade.
Well landscaped with a large amount of people working the flower gardens. Hats off to them it looked amazing.
The butterfly garden has a rock scavenger hunt.
I have a scavenger hunt for the adults, find the tunnel. Don't ask for help. I will give you a hint, they hid it in a mountain.
Kids and grandchildren will love it. As with all exhibits the kids will finish before the adults.
I wish I lived closer.
Rumors that 4014 BIG BOY may be on display in the fall. This is the only functional Big Boy.
Normally this is a one day event.
Trisel Blau
Great place to visit if you have a train or old car enthusiast. Awesime model train displays and tons of real steam and diesel trains. There is a mini train ride and a trolley train ride. But be aware it is mostly outside so dress warm if going during cold months.
Konstantin Alekseev
Old cars, fun train, tram rides, steamers and many other things to look at. Awesome place to spend a day with your kids :)
Ian Strait
Not as big as I expected.
Becky Morse
Cool place to see all kinds of trains and train cars up close. Some restored and you can go inside them. Lots of big 'steamies'. Also cars, a C-47 plane, and a tugboat! Cool activities for kids.
Dave Derington
Ever-expanding and improving, this museum had a lasting impression on my childhood and now on my own children. A must see fire St. Louisans and visitors alike!
Marc Gallet
Great museum, friendly staff
Antony Jeyaraj
The place is really awesome for your kids to learn about transportation history. The fighter jet used by United States in WWII is displayed here and lot of vintage cars from late 1890 to 1940. Also you can see lot of rails engines. You can enter those very ils engines and see how the engines worked long back in the railroad history. They have miniature train ride for adults and kids, they'll show you two rounds around the park, its much enjoyable for kids. The entrance fee is $12 for adults above 13 years and $5 for kids. Miniature train ride is $5 each.
No cafeteria available inside (may be due to corona restrictions). The staff are very friendly and you can find a gift shop inside. Must visiting place.
Suz Sims-Fletcher
We did a quick stop....hey have z leng machine. The stiuff looks very cool. Worth more time...especially with kids on a hot day. Whooooo whoooooooo!
Jim Delton
A very good museum. Lots of exhibits. Some stuff that looked like kids would really enjoy it, some kind of garden with guessing games, facilities to have a birthday party. I didn't down rate it for my next comment because it's a pretty common failing of these kinds of museums but almost everything was "roped off" as far as being able to really see inside the cars and trains. About the only train stuff you could actually go thru were cabooses.. lots and lots of cabooses. Still and all they did have a wide variety of train cars and locomotives you could get to the outside of as well as a nice display of Cadillacs in the first building.
Greg Blackall
So many cool things to see and do here. The mini train ride was very cool, and the collection of trains is impressive.
James Jackson
It's a cool place but kind of expensive if you have a big family. If you have more than 1 or 2 kids it's not really worth the money.
Anthony Boling
Very educational and quite a few rare vehicles to see. Over all great experience.
Chris Murphy
Fantastic place. Got a lot of classic cars and trains. Very great place.
David W
What a wonderful museum! I hadn't been since I was much younger and, while a lot has been improved, it still has all the charm and wealth of transport information that I remember.
Carol Rose
It was a little tough to understand what was free vs paid. The historic cars were neat to see as were the trains.
Johnny Corbett Long
Great place to take the kids not too busy
Scott & Cyndi Wright
Many of the exhibits were closed due to Covid-19.
They have very few aircraft exhibits. It would be nice to see some more pictures, models, and historical lessons even if they aren't available from retired planes or helicopters.
The volunteers were very nice and informative. The miniature train ride was a big hit for our niece and nephew. Definitely going to have to go back. Too much to take in during one trip.
Maddie Grace
Took my dad here while he was in town (he’s obsessed with trains) even though I don’t know anything about trains they had a wide variety of trains to look at. Super friendly and my dad will probably talk about this trip for years to come
Dana Lindenmann
Our favorite place for trains, trolley rides, and the Big Boy!
Molly Winger
Very fun! Love how much of it is outdoors, but with plenty of fun to have indoors! They're being very COVID safe, which helps a lot while we're still waiting for a pediatric vaccine. We definitely plan to buy a membership for repeat visits--seems like it will pay for itself very soon!
Jim Bundstein
Park much up graded and looks so nice. Great place to visit not just for trains.
Ross North
Great place to visit! What they have is fantastic but I wish there would have been a little more information from the employees about what was there and how to see it.
Anne Poelker
My son has loved this place for years! I love that if you decide to get a membership after paying for a daily admission, they will apply what you paid towards your membership fee. The level of membership that we get is completely paid for once our family of 3 (now 4, but the baby doesn't need a ticket!) goes twice and gets train tickets each time. Every visit after that is essentially free. I also love that we can bring other people with us each time too.
Jay Fischer
Many trains to climb in and photograph. Reilly car and small train rides.
Stephany Stone
We came here a while ago and I still think of our trip fondly. So many interesting pieces- not just trains but cars as well. What really makes this place is the staff though, they are so friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell they really love sharing knowledge about all the neat things this place has.
This museum is a treat for all ages.
Patricia Lydiksen
The grandkids really loved this place…will definitely return for an all day visit to see everything.
Laura Daugherty
Very nice, buildings air-conditioned places for drinks and snacks, handicap accessible, creation station for kids. Very informational!
Andrew Hester
Great place to visit!
Walter Beckman
If you haven't visited in awhile you are missing something. The Creation Station is great for small children. The miniature train ride is a big hit with the kids. The train and car exhibits are very good. Not much in the way of aircraft exhibits.
Jordan S
The best part is the little kid playroom. Great for kids of all ages to play with toys, color, dress up, read books, or just imagine!
Wendy Fawcett
My 4 year old was in train heaven. He really enjoyed being able to go inside many of the cars and check them out.
Shane Clack
We went in the winter, so there was snow falling and all the outside attractions were closed. The inside had less than I expected, but what they did have covered a lot of history, so that was cool. The kids spent 40 min in the "Creation Station" playroom, so that trumped all else. Will try to go in the summer to see all available features.
Melissa G
Such a cool museum with many different buildings and opportunities for children/families/adults to interact with artifacts. The miniature train is fun to ride. We spent over an hour there and would definitely go back to look at all the trains, boats, and planes we missed. Our toddler enjoyed it, as did my husband and I!
Scott Schuh
Go on board some of the trains and look at them from an engineer's perspective. They even gave us a tour of a private car which was nothing like what you see in the TV yeah it was better than what the standard passenger was able to ride in. The kids had a great time and fell in love with the antique cars in the museum. They wanted to know how that big 1950s Chevy convertible could fit on the road as big as it is? The kids had a good time climbing on the tugboat and standing next to the aircraft.
Danielle G.
I had some friends in from out of town and we decided to take their son to the museum as he loves cars, trains etc. Everything was great until we were by the trains outside. There was a tour of one of the train cars that we were very rudely told we could not participate in. The extremely non-friendly gentleman, I guess who worked there, told us that we could NOT be on this tour as there were Brazilians there and he needed a translator. We would just HAVE TO WAIT Man, we had a 3 year old with us and it was windy. All we wanted do was walk through the train. So. Overall the museum rocked and we will be back in the summer. But, can you get someone a bit friendlier to do that little tour?
Andrew Coon
An amazing collection of trains, with a decent collection of cars. Excellent model train display.
Best enjoyed in good weather, or when dressed to be outside at length.
This does have one of the 8 remaining Big Boy engines, the largest steam engine made. To stand in the cab of one is amazing.
Jon Grothoff
This museum is fantastic. We brought our 2 kids that are both toddlers and they loved it. The mini-train ride was a lot of fun and the displays are very impressive. My son just choo choos as he runs up to each train. I am amused at the 1 star reviews because of how insignificant and petty the complaints are. Nothing 1 star about this place!
Kara Bevis
We brought our 2 year old and great grandparents. The two year old enjoyed riding the miniature train and the trolley. She also enjoyed the toddler play room. It was a lot of walking for my great grandparents, but they still enjoyed it. They just didn't opt to look at everything.
B W
Learning about trains, cars, trucks, and buses, through the years.
Jeremiah Terhark
Great mix of indoor and outdoor exhibits. Kids and I had a great time looking at planes, trains and automobiles.
jenn burkhardt
Always a great time at this museum. Fun for all ages. The guys running the trains are really friendly and make the ride enjoyable for all.
Rachel Faulkner
We were lucky enough to go on a car show day so there was a lot to see. It was so hot outside we totally missed the trains up on the top lot. My kids (5 & 7) were hoping for a more interactive museum so they were bummed to just look and not touch. They enjoyed the train ride and the little pedal cars they rode. To me, we've seen the place once and we won't likely return.
Jeremy B
This place is excellent, so much to see! Many, many trains to climb on and explore in. The trains are displayed outside and can get pretty warm in the summer, but some of the trains are under a canopy which helps cut the heat. There is also a display of cars inside of an air conditioned building. This is a fun place to cool off and hang out for a while. The main building has a lot of great history and displays to explore. It is quite a walk from the main building to the trains, but luckily they have a shuttle that runs back and forth. The kids will love this as much as seeing and exploring the trains. There is also a large tug boat you can climb around in, but aren't allowed to go inside. Fun time!
Sheila Sharpe
Haven't been since grade school. Love this place, the history contained within those walls is amazing. I didn't get to see the trains, as there were lots of small children around, and I'd rather not. I surmised a couple of daycare centers were visiting that day...definitely will return.
Neeraj D
A fun time for people of?all ages that love transportation. The Big Boy was lots of fun to walk through.
Kellie Smith
If your kids love trains this place is perfect for them. They have a ton of different trains and knowledgeable staff. They have several really nice cars as well, and if you are into cars it is a must see. Loved it and we will be back.
Alysha Heimberg
This is a very interesting museum with a collection of mostly retired Trains and vintage cars. You get to explore inside many of the old trains and they select different trains to operate on select days for short rides! They also have a miniature train that gives rides and hand operated miniature train cars for kids (available on some days). Additionally, there is a play room with crafts for kids to make and an extensive collection of wooden train tables. The museum shop is an excellent source of gifts. There are some model train scenes operating year round but they have a lot more around Christmas time. It's also just a nice place to walk around with paved sidewalks so it's stroller/wheelchair friendly. There are some hills so it might be difficult for some people to walk (little people and elderly). If you plan on going more than a few times the membership is worth it. It's something my 2 yr old and I do once a week.
Nolene Duclos
Had 3 & 8 y/o grandkids with us. They enjoyed all the trains & trolley. We bought 2 new train books to read tonight.
Michael Buell
This turned out to be more interesting than we expected. Took our grandchildren aged 3 and 2 there and they enjoyed it. Lots of full sized trains to roam through. Old carriages and the like. A 30 minute play room. Small train ride. Some really cool old cars and much more. Small food area.
Dave Gilbert
We used to go to this place in high school (many years ago - hah!) and frankly, it was just an orderly and rusted junkyard. But all of that has changed! It is incredible what the workers and volunteers have done to make this a destination worth taking time out to go see and enjoy. There is a small train that circles around the perimeter of the museum - and it is fun for both kids and adults. If you have young kids ( below the age of five), they have a playroom that is not only the delightful for the kids but also for the adults as it is well-appointed for both: the kids can play with everything from train sets to kitchens, and the adults can watch all the action take place from nice rocking chairs or seats on the edge. Wonderful murals and paintings also adorne the room. Highly recommended and a hidden gem!

I love this place! I like to say it’s good if you’re a little boy or an old man, or going with one of them…but anyone interested in things that move is going to have a good time! Their indoor play area is the best!
julia paul
The Creation Station is an awesome place for younger kids. My boys (age 2 and 4) love it! And my older son is starting to love looking at the outdoor trains and cool old cars, etc. They also have a mini train you can ride, which is fun for the little ones.
Sandy Carter
We took our time took our lunch ate it on a picnic table in the shade, was really nice. The kids got to climb on the trains. We rode a Street Car , the Engineer was very informative and friendly. One employee named John was the nicest to our grandson. We visited the train that President Truman made speeches from.saw the Giant Locomotive's.we gave a donation, because the help is volunteers. They appreciated us. It was a great day for family and a great educational experience.
Joyce Grothoff
Amazing place for children and adults. Many of the full size train Exhibits are interactive. Mini train for kids. Running trolley. Old cars for the auto enthusiasts. Great place to go.
Andrew Ruger
Great, safe place to visit outdoors during the pandemic. A must see for any transportation enthusiast, with a variety of trains, cars, planes, and other artifacts from the 1800s to the present. Very friendly staff members were helpful and gave tours.
Allison Barnes
Took my boys (7 & 4.5) to the museum for the first time and they LOVED IT! We only had time for the trains, but that's all they wanted to see. We bought the year pass and will be going back again and again. Can't wait to see the cars along with the other things there.
Dan K
This place was a lot cooler than I expected, as an adult. We only visited the outdoor trains, with 4 kits aged 1 to 5 in tow, but I was very impressed with the condition of the restorations, bright and vivid colors on the trains, and sheer number of them available to see and sometimes walk through.
The outdoor trains areas (that part is divided into 2 levels on a hill) would probably be more on the difficult side to navigate in a wheelchair or with a large stroller partly because of the hillyness and partly because of uneven terrain and crossing multiple sets of train tracks in multiple areas in order to get around.
The small train that goes around the perimeter of the museum grounds, with the conductor giving a tour of the grounds and information about some of the machines that aren't in condition to be toured or walked around, was really nice even in the rain.
Maelca Duncan (MAELCA)
A lots to see different kind of transportation, you will amazed, try and visit
Janet Brown
This is a great museum with a fabulous train exhibit and a vintage car building. Our last visit was 12/21 when Santa was there from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and it was much more crowded than usual. There were perhaps a dozen in line ahead of us and it took a half hour to get our tickets. I thought this was ridiculous. They had two registers but only one going. Three employees with one on the phone the entire 30 minutes we waited in a line (of 12 people) to get tickets. If you're having a special event, have it staffed to accommodate the larger crowd. The exhibits were fabulous and worth a visit when you're in the area.
Ben DeSantis
The best museum I have ever seen. They have just about everything you could possibly ask for right there. I primarily visited the rail section, and everything they had there was beautifully restored, they looked like they were built yesterday. Just about everything that was there I never thought I would ever see. It was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had, and I would recommend it to everyone. These guys clearly work their hardest, and deserve any donation you could give them. The staff is friendly, and would engage in conversation about anything, and could answer any question you have for them. Amazing job, guys!
Alyssa G
My daughter and I visited here today. It was very small but I liked that because there weren't a ton of people there. She loved Creation Station, couldn't get enough of the school bus, and LOVED the train rides! Honestly though, if we didn't do Creation Station then there wouldn't have been a whole lot for us to do so it's a definite must if you take the kids there. It was still a great time and we will definitely return.
Nicole Bimslager
Love the whole place. We love that we can go inside trains and explore. We can pretend to be riding along and driving the trains for real. Every time we go we learn so many new things about trains. The volunteers are full of amazing information!
Brandy Nieters
Had no idea this place was so big and awesome! Kiddos had a blast! Wear your walking shoes for some great sights and of the biggest trains you will ever see!!!
Brendan Denney
A good place for people who like history you can climb on. A few of the trains are open to climb in, there is also a tug boat to climb in. A miniature train and restored trolley operate seasonally. Season passes are a good deal for repeat visitors.
Ethan Todd
I can't believe I only just discovered this museum! The car and train collections are absolutely staggering. I was in awe when I saw that they had an original Chrysler Turbine Car - one of 9 or so left in existence!
The family loved it and there was more than enough to keep everyone entertained.
Fair warning, almost the entire museum is outside and there's a significant amount of walking or climbing in/on to trains - so dress appropriately and be prepared for some slippery surfaces.
Anthony Rossetti
Took my parents this week. They each enjoyed the exhibits. I was personally impressed with how well written the exhibits were. Many activities for children.
Liz Negrau
In many ways seems like a huge collection of transportation “stuff” (including whole trains), but the mini-railway and car museum is not to be missed. If you need an outing with a kindergartner and a Boomer you won’t find a better 2 hour excursion. Trolley ride has knowledgeable and loquacious volunteers.
Ruth Cooley
Hailey my 5 yr old granddaughter & I loved this museum. It is really priced right and a full days fun & you really get your exercise in with all the walking. So much cool stuff to see & explore. We also loved being able to get up on the trains & walking through them.
Neal Kendrick
We had a good experience here with our three kids. They let all of them into the creation station even though two of them were too old. It's basically a big play area with toys. The trains were neat but became a bit stale after an hour or so. We stayed about 4 hours total.
Ashley Fairchild
We really enjoyed this! The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. We really loved the variety of what was on display.
Kirk Augustine
My kids and I go here a lot and we always have a wonderful time. There are plenty of trains to see. Many of them you can climb into. On the weekends there is a trolley to ride. There is a miniature railroad that goes around the grounds and a playroom full of toys including several wooden rail tracks.
John Martino
Great museum for kids of all ages with something for everyone. My 2 year old daughter loved riding the 1:3 scale train. She also enjoyed the classic car collection, going inside the trains in the trainyard, and seeing the electric model trains go round and round.
Christopher Gamblin
I was here over 20 years ago and it just keeps getting better.
Becky R
Great museum! I took my teen and dad, both found things of interest and made some wonderful memories. You can ride the trolley for free but must pay to ride the train. Overall a fun and relatively inexpensive outing.
Michael Hughes
Unbelievably Amazing displays of trains and automobiles! One could spend several days wandering through the historic displays and listening to the ghosts of yesteryear and feel the rumblings of the giant locomotives carrying people and cargo to destinations far and wide! If you listen very closely you can hear the grand stories they tell and actually immerse yourself in an era gone by when the romance of riding the rails was a gloriously wonderful way to travel!
Matt Slade
Very cool museum if you're interested in train transportation. They also have a lot of older cars. If you are a member of the military they do offer a military discount.
Daria Winker
Brought grandkids aged 7,5,3,1 and they loved it. It was hard to pull them away from the Christmas toy train layouts and once they got to the real rolling stock they didn't want to leave. Enough things to see to stay busy for several hours.
Jason Martini
We were vacationing in St Louis and looking for some things to do. We have yoing boys and they loved this place. There is a bunch of different types of engines and cars to explore. There was also trolley rides, a miniature train ride, and hand cars for them to rise. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that has any interest in trains, or kids who do. If not I would also recommend it as you probably will when you leave.
Daniel Amiri
Great for kids and fans of trains and cars. My son loves the trolley and miniature railroad, and my girls love exploring the old trains. Such a fun outing, especially when you couple it with the Creation Station. The membership is a good deal.
Linda Christy
Handicap accessible. 3 gift shops for light snacks. Free miniature train ride to get overview of park. Trains are awesome. Car museum as well. Beautifully landscaped. Easy free park. Admission for seniors $2off regular $12 admission.
Mariano Marin-Gomez
Amazing collection of trains and rare autos! Very friendly and knowledgeable people!
Mac Truck
My son (almost 4) was super excited about all of the trains and he wanted to touch and climb everything. I personally found this transportation museum better than the one in Los Angeles (where I'm from). A few people commented saying that most of the trains are stationary, and that just goes to show that those people have no idea what a museum actually is. When metal things are 100 years old it's hard to keep up with rust, but I found they were doing a terrific job.
The staff was also AMAZING! So informative and nice/happy people. I spoke with one of the conductors for almost 15 minutes and learned more about the subway car I was riding in than I ever thought I would know. It almost made me wish I was an engineer except the whole math part.
I would highly suggest taking your kids here at least once. My son woke up this morning (we went yesterday) and talking about nothing other than the museum. We will be going back very soon!
Claire Rodrigo
I highly recommend you purchase a membership so you may take family and friends for a year at the same cost as 1 visit for 7 people.
Please know that there are 2 sections to the museum. My first visit I had only explored the children’s area.
Lee Tao
Great museum especially for little ones who like vehicles. My three year old loved it though he may have spent more time at the gift shop looking at toys than all the exhibits.
Andy Gibson
Beautiful place, a must see
Jerry Campbell
Wonderful employees & volunteers. So much to see.
Especially trains & autos that each have a story.
Dan Robertson
Great collection very friendly staff very professional i will be back. Folks this is a good family thing to do. Yes this stuff is old but there is alot of history here and good photo ops with the kids.
Edward Knop
Lots of interesting transportation related equipment is included in this display.
Johannes Demmer
I am not sure why it is called a transportation museum - next to a few cars and a plane, the focus is definitely rail from all decades. Widespread large, collection of engines, cars (both freight and passenger). All with detailed description - so bring time.
Suggestion: focus at one area at a time otherwise you get lost between all different pieces. Or to the museum: rearrange the rail exhibits by period, traction or use to make it easier for not so rail-experienced visitors. But definitely a 5 star location.
Stephanie Jones
Went to the Museum on the Smithsonian Museum Live day with free admission and my girls and I had a great time. I didn't realize that most of the museum is outside. The trains are abundant and we will be going back to walk through more of the open ones as it was a hot day and we went towards the end of the day. My girls also loved the train and trolley rides (an additional $5 charge per person no matter the age)
Rhyfel S.
Awesome collection of historic railroad equipment. Kids never wanted to leave.
Michael Warden-Michl
Feel that my wife and I got a little catfished with this place. Because of the outstanding reviews, we brought our 2yr old on a rainy Saturday, only to find that the "Creation Station" room, the biggest attraction for young kids, is closed all day for private events. So, keep that in mind if you plan on bringing young children, that room is available weekday mornings
Kripa C
I recently bought a year long membership! The kids play area is great for toddlers! The ride on train is also fun! They have a cafe and gift shop. The staff I have interacted with have all been very friendly and helpful! Thanks!
Rich Jones
Amazing collection of railroad equipment and memorabilia. Nice, if not extensive, auto exhibit. Great place to take the kids.
Craig Thorpe
If you like trains, this is the place to go. Also has exhibits of other transportation related things. One nice thing they did was build a platform so you can clearly see the UP trains as they go by at the back of the museum property. This is how close you can get to the trains as they hop by. I highly recommend this!
Colin Shipley
Toot toot! Take a ride on the miniature railroad or climb into the cab of several retired train engines. Look at the evolution of the automobile and several early electric cars (earlier than Tesla).
Swing through creation station with the little ones for about 45 minutes of play in a playroom.
Hop on the working street car and enjoy a short ride.
Matthew Lenz
This is a great place to take your kids. The staff are always incredibly helpful and kind. It's quite large so bring a stroller for the younger ones. If you plan to ride the children's train park in the lower lot.
Brian Rice
Great collection of rare and one off trains and vehicles. The facilities and landscaping are all kept spotless. The volunteers and employess are all friendly and knowledgeable. If I were to leave one suggestion, it would be to place a few vending machines around with bottled water. Its a very long walk to find a water fountain or down the the gift/cafeteria.
Nathan Butterick
Such a delightful place to go on a quick unplanned road trip. Awesome staff and exhibits. Lots of verities of things to see and do.
Anthony Hickman
Great day out. Loved coming here as a kid to see all the trains/cars and marvel in there size and explore all the cabins. As an adult going back to see all the mechanical workings and appreciate the history and engineering refreshed the entire experience.
Agnes AJ
If you are into trains (the full sized, real ones), you'll absolutely LOVE this place. The volunteers, who help restore the donated trains, are very friendly and love to talk about trains. There is a free trolley ride on an authentic trolley car, and there are old automobiles (one of shich is valued at $1.5 million dollars!), two boats, and an airplane on site. This place is wonderful for adults and children alike. Only one small complaint: the prices tecently increased from $5.00 per person to $10/adults and $5/kids. A little pricier than I'd like but still well worth a visit.
Heather Evans
This place was so cool. All of the displays were spotless. Lots of cars and trains. You could even climb around on the trains and take a train ride. I had lots of fun, so I think kids would enjoy this museum as well.
Keith Lawrence
Enjoyed our family time there riding the trolley and kids train. Loved seen the old cars and hearing about the history of them. Kids loved getting on the trains and walking through them.
Shawn Holcomb
While up here on vacation we were looking for something to do in an afternoon. We discovered this museum and had a great time looking at the many variety of locomotives. Admission is $8 per adult. If you like trains this is a great place to visit.
Amber Schroeder
Always so much fun exploring here and seeing all the out of commission trains! You can even climb inside quite a few! The little train that you can ride is great for the kiddos! It is a lot of walking for littles, so I would suggest a stroller.
Wayne Mitchell
Best family place to go. Grandma too!!
Shawn Blackwell
A great place to explore the history of transportation for young and old alike. I love this place and you will too. Please donate to this worthy cause. They need to raise money to refurbish the antique trains and other modes of transportation and to keep this place open for generations to come.
Eric Perkins
Loved it! It was fun going through the old trains and they had a nice car museum also. It was impressive how large their collection is. I’m surprised I’ve lived in St Louis and never heard about this place until a few months ago.
Sam Klein
Went on a chilly day where most extra activities were closed but my son and cousins had an exciting time seeing and going in some awesome historic trains. I had fun too. If you kid likes Thomas or Dinosaur Train then you must go.
Ryan Schilling
Lots of examples (ones you can go into too) of trains that were in use throughout the rail boom and through history. There's 2 indoor buildings, one when you come in from the lower parking lot if you come into the property at the first entrance on Barrett Station, that has a small selection of aviation equipment (seats, helmets, pictures, not much else) and some model trains set up along with a gift shop and (at least at this time) a display with several trucks set up to showcase early commercial trucks (tow trucks, flat bed trucks, etc). The 2nd building is atop the hill near the upper parking lot. That houses mostly automotive examples of historical or significant vehicles. From the first/lower building, take a walk up the switchbacks past the 2nd building to get to the outdoor trains (a good number of them except the big snow blower and Big Boy are covered) and see engines and train cars along with a few boats off in the distance (I think one of them is an old tug of some kind) near the upper parking lot. Curiously missing are any plane-related items other than some seats and pictures and stuff located in some sort of pseudo-hallway area behind the front desk. As a plus, there's even a miniature train that runs around the property and some old construction equipment off on its own near the lower parking lot that would be neat for kids. I also believe they offer...I can't remember what its called... its like a room where your kids can go and build stuff with kits they have. The train and that extra kids thing are an additional charge, but would be neat for someone to do with their kids.
I don't put too many things on my "places I need to come back to" list, and this one isn't there (at least not unless anything significant changes) but I did enjoy myself and getting to see the trains and cars. The museum seems well run and the placards next to each piece are informative (although a few have some bad typos on them) and there seems to be a cohesion amongst the museum pieces; they're all there for some purpose, whether they were a first-of-its-kind invention or played a novel role in American culture and shaping those that came after them.
If you haven't gone and live local, or are considering making the trip to see it: do it. Its worth seeing at least once and to anyone with a passing interest in transportation its neat.
Ryan Ceynar
This place is awesome! We spent about 2.5 hours here, it's mostly outdoor stuff so dress for the weather. There are tons of cool trains, some that you can go in. There is also an indoor area with cars. I would definitely recommend going here.
Jim Weissler
Worth every Pennie. Took the train ride twice with the grandkids
Tim Love
Powerful display of architecture from the early days of the mechanized era.
Colin Davitt
I love getting to walk around all the trains and the exhibits outside. Inside you must check out the car with the diamond coating, real diamonds!
They do have some rare and one of a kind cars inside.
Definitely a place for kids.
Kristen Kruger
Fun place for the young kids to explore. A little limited in substance. There's really just a handful of trains to climb through. Don't miss the car museum. It's easy to walk past.
Tomy W
Lots of trains, cars, bikes and some things in-between. So much fun.
Julie Orozco
My son absolutely loves it here. He asks almost everyday if we can go see the trains. There's lots to see and do here. I think it's fun and interesting for all ages.
Mindy Clay
Mostly trains and trolleys. Good exhibits of those. Did have a building with cars which included cars made in St. Louis. Nice exhibits
Lots of walking. Worth the money if you like to see those vehicles.
Johnathan Woodman
Excellent experience. Staff was very friendly without being overbearing at all. Even on a colder rainy day, it was very enjoyable!
Jim Lehn
Our 10 yr. Old grandson got a kick out of the museum, as did Grandma and Grandpa. I recommend it.
Russell Ray (Rus)
This place is amazing not only for children, but for adults as well. The restoration of the trains is exceptional and the staff is so incredibly friendly.
Lori Reed
Great stop! Fun to go through and hear about the history. Many employees are there to talk and help you see and learn. Take the kids and have some fun!
Elizabeth Ayers
I love to take my boys here. It's very fun for them. The creation station can be hard to get into but if you have the time to wait it's worth it. I have a 3 year old and a one year old. My one year old even enjoys the creation station
Ozark Mountain Railfan
My son’s favorite place on this planet! We live in Arkansas and make it a point to travel to St. Louis to visit the Transportation Museum a couple times a year. First time we visited my son was 7 years old. Now he’s 13 and this place still brings as much joy to us as it did the first time we visited. It’s also a great place to go Pokémon hunting.
Ray Zacher
One of the finest transportation museums anywhere. Mostly railroad related, their collection is second to none. Too bad the pandemic prevents all exhibits to be opened for tours, but what they have done in recent years has really been an improvement.
Erica L.
We saw Santa arrive in a helicopter, played in the Creation Station, rode the train, walked the path, and ate in the cafe. My boys loved every minute of it. The food was very reasonably priced and tasty! There is so much to do that is free, it is worth the trip just for those things (we did pay for some activities).
Elise Allen
This place is a hidden gem! We took my two-year-old son here and he had the best time. There is so much to see and do and the size and quantity of the trains will blow you away!
Curt Wibbenmeyer
If you go during the week it's usually much less busy. There is plenty to explore here and you may even catch a train passing when you head up top. If you go during the holidays they have a great train display which the kids usually love.
There is a small train ride on the lower section. I'm not sure it's worth the money, but worth doing once for the kids.
Matthew Stokstad
Mostly trains but cool none the less.
William Melcher
We waited way too long to check this museum out. The employees and volunteers who work there were helpful and friendly. I Highly recommend this place and we are already planning a 2nd trip.
Carolyn Dawson
The museum was nice and clean. There was plenty to look at and read. I just wish there were more "tour guides" to give us information about the vehicles. We found 1 person working in the train yard. Aside from that, the buildings seemed lonely.
Danny Cochran
Great time on a field trip. They really do a good job teaching the kids 👌 …
Jonathan Townsley
Fun place with lots of things to do for everyone. I highly recommend it for kids' birthdays as the staff will help you with everything and the kids can play with all the transportation themed toys. The car museum at the top of the hill really brought back memories for me.
Rebekah Slone
The museum was awesome, lots to see. There were lots of trains and interactive things. A great place for adults and kids alike.
Steven Slattery
When Shane and I went there, the few times that we were looking at the trains and a futuristic car, 1 of the volunteers actually allowed us to get a closer look by going beyond the ropes but only if we didn't touch the futuristic car from back then, and another volunteer actually let us get into the trolley that was only for display and told us about what it was used for and many other things. It was AMAZING!
Brian Stephenson
Great place for looking at trains and other transportation. Took scouts for Railroad Merit badge. Kids had a blast. The staff was great and explained everything in great detail. This is very handicap accessible.
Jeffrey Lerner
They have activities every weekend, check their website to see what's coming up. They have a lot of car shows here. Plenty of trains to walk around and see and a free trolley ride. $5 for a miniature train ride around the property . Look for discount tickets online and special free days.
Clarissa Kornell
The perfect place to take kids on a sunny day - especially if they are into trains! Plenty of space to run around and all kinds of restored train cars to explore. A real gem!
Bekka
Perfect place to go for an afternoon. Fabulous displays in the car building. Trains are such fun with hands on experience. Looking forward to the next visit, since we ran out of time.
don crozier
Each time we visit the museum, I get more and more impressed. Great collection, nicely maintained, and a very friendly and helpful staff.
Mary Woolsey
I went to the Museum at the urging of my sister. I ended appreciating the railroad industry after looking at huge engines and the history of railroading. This is a venue well worth the time for families, especially men and boys. And don't miss the car museum; well worth your time.
Tanya Taillon
This place is amazing! The model trains in the building are so cool! Take the time to do a tour of the trains. I wish I could remember our guides name; he was fantastic! You get to go through a train that you can only see if you are on the tour.
Michael Ibach
World-class collection of trains! We loved it.
Dan Stritzel
Plenty to do and look at. Lots of historic trains, sits right by U.P. tracks so you can see in service trains go by too. Has one of the few Big Boy locomotives left in the country. Car museum and gift shop as well. You can learn slot and see and touch many different types if locomotives and coaches from years past. Lots of parking. Recommend to everyone, both visitors and St. Louisans.
John R. Adolphson
Grandkids had a great time.
Actually got a personal tour
Bryan B
We went because my son and I enjoy trains. This was so much more than I expected. From the miniature train ride to the UNBELIEVABLE number of historic trains (and other vehicles) I was in awe. This is a MUST for any train enthusiast at any level. Even got to sit in the engineer's seat of a Big Boy....
Nate's World
If you want a great place to see locomotives and automobiles from an area gone by, this is the place. Kids you will learn alot and even have a chance to ride a mini train. Lots of activities to do during the summer.
carol ann Yenco
Great museum. All volunteers working there. The train section is unbelievable. They also have a great car display. There is even a Cafe. Be prepared to walk and spend 3 hours.
Reed Radcliffe
The model railroad exhibit was a great deal of fun. I'm going to have to bring my great nephew and niece some day. This place is a treasure. Been coming since I was a child myself.
Samantha Herat
It cost $8/adult to get in but can go anywhere in the museum except the restoration area. They have a LOT of steam locomotives here very few diesel locomotives thogh. It is good to look and read about the locomotives there and the cars that are there as well.
j jackson
Great place and fascinating to visit. Enjoyed seeing all the different locomotives, railroad cars, equipment, and memorabilia on display. Allow several hours for your visit and bring a good pair of walking shoes!
H Mitchell
Entry is a little high. I was expecting it though. Great displays of decommissioned trains. You can't get on some without booking tours though. Overall a good experience for my almost 3 year old.
Megan Driver
This is my 2 year olds absolute FAVORITE place to go!! The whole place is just so much fun. There's an antique car building, a yard full of trains to climb to, a train to ride (costs extra), a free trolly to ride, and a boat and plane to climb on! It was one awesome adventure aftwr another! I HIGHLY recommend this place to ANYONE with kids who love anything with wheels!
Nyct0Ph0t0
This place was great! They had cars, planes, and trains. The passes to get in were inexpensive and the overall activities were fun and educational. I highly recommend this place if you want a fun and educational trip for your family.
G T
Neat place, great for a train buff.
Has potential to be so much more.
Elana Vondaven
I took one of my patients and his best friend there and we had a blast.Alot of interesting things there
Lisa S727
I haven't been here since I was in school. The updates and great. There was even a car show going on the day I went and that was a good surprise. Great place to go. Don't forget to leave donations people or this place may cease to exist for future generations.
Alejandra Orozco
Nice cars, trains and more Kids had a blast
zjww45
A wonderful experience! The negative reviews I see obviously come from people who wouldn't have enjoyed the nostalgia no matter what. If you like trains, planes, classic cars, and history...you'll love this place. It's a large collection that continues to grow every year. Not to mention that they have classic car shows just about every weekend during the summer.
September 8th is All-Chevy Show at the Transportation Museum. I'm there for sure.
Elizabeth Falast-Saunders
The volunteers were super knowledgeable. It reallu shows how much they love the museum. The collection is so diverse. You can never go wrong with a day at the Museum of Transport!
Zach Wedel
Great place to see trains. Kids can climb on many of them as well. The miniature train ride is also wonferful. Only negative is the hill to climb to get to most of the exhibits.
Stephen Brewer
I was a child when I first came years ago, back in the early 70's.
I've been coming back ever since.
Robert Tobey
Pretty cool selection of trains, cars and transport related vehicles. Kids enjoyed it. Fun place to spend an hour or 2. When the weather is nice they have a train ride and little ride for the kids.
Peter Hand
Used to come here as a kid all the time and it has really grown! Great displays and so many trains! So much fun for all ages!
Kevin Cole
Very nice museum, will visit again on a cooler day.
Amy Jean
Great time! Could have spent twice as long there.
Red Raven
One of the best museums. Great exhibits. Includes a small gage railroad for a ride around the grounds.
Dale Martin
Nice selection of early 20th century automobiles. Several locomotives on display and 2 Pullman coaches that you can walk through. The children's train is a must ride. Lots of walking.
Gary
Nice time there. Enjoyed seeing train engines and cars. I was there last day before they could give tours through cars.
Dean Ocque
Love this place. Don't be fooled at first glance. They have tons of trains and cars here. Just a note, they close at 4pm which means they close at 3:45. You cannot purchase anything after 3:45. I had an armload of stuff and she said they were closed.
Angie Merckel
I'm a nanny and my kiddos at work love this place. Fred loves riding the trains and is constantly asking me when we are going back. Just wish the membership would save money on snacks.
D J
They have lots of interesting trains, cars, and other stuff. All the people on staff were very friendly. It's worth the price of admission just to see the Bobby Darin car.
mGm Gehrin
If you or anyone in your family likes trains or cars...it's a must see. Our littles particularly love Creation Station. On our first visit we became members and haven't regretted that choice at all.
Audrey Slatton
Beautiful landscape, history at every turn and fun for all ages. Combined with a beautiful day and friendly staff, what more could you ask for? I just wish the little hand cars were up and running!
Welcome_To_The_Clearance_Aisle
All of the vehicles and trains were very cool. My only issue was how vague it sometimes was to whether or not you could enter some of the trains. Not all of them were marked very well.
Andrew W
I've had the pleasure of visiting the St. Louis Museum of Transportation for over 20 years. Observing the same look of wonderment on my son's face that I experienced as a child has further increased my appreciation and respect of this collection. With a footprint of 129 acres and over 150 pieces of rail rolling stock, this is the largest rail collection in North America. There are 70 locomotives on display, half of which are one-of-a-kind and several with open cabs allowing you to view railroad history through the eyes of the engineer.
According to John H. White, Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, "The St. Louis Museum of Transportation houses one of the largest and best collections of transportation vehicles in the world."

This place is really cool. A salvage yard of old trains and some really cool history. My nephew loved it!
David Littlestar
Fun place to explore with a 6yr old. He enjoyed the model train set. Lost his interest in the car exhibit but enjoyed the trains. Wish more trains were open to public.
Renee Wilmesherr
Amazing. Didn't believe the hype but it's true. You do have to walk a bit so be prepared. Look on Groupon for discounted tickets. It's worth it. My 7 year old daughter who doesn't care about trains ect had a blast.
Tom Predmore
Great display of antique cars/vehicles, all in great condition. Good display of antique railcars, some need some refurbishing, great variety though.
melvin hile
This is a hidden Jem. There is such a large variety of different type of equipment.
Sarah B-Martin
Lots of fun for the kids. I wish there were more exhibits the kids could climb on though. The train was fun to ride. Everyone working there was super friendly.
Jonathan Flatt
This place is really cool if you like trains my son had a blast. Definitely would come back just on a cooler day. Tons to look at and experience.
Adrian Leung
If you're a train buff like me, this place is a must-go. They pretty much have every single locomotives that one can think of.
Price to enter is not bad (USD8 for adult, USD5 for kids). Also do be aware that it's mostly outdoor, so it's definitely better to go there on a day with nice weather.

Great place, love to go and see trains and I can show off my knowledge to friends... I always look forward to visiting and always want to come back. They have some trains that are hidden though... The daylight 4460 is hidden in accomandated personnel area and you can only see it when you ask, but you are allowed to go back there if you ask. Staff is very freindy and are willing to give you extra info. 5 stars!
Anthony Badalamenti
If your kids (or you yourself) are into transportation at all...YOU MUST VISIT HERE AT LEAST ONCE. But be careful..if you do go here, its a trap. You and/or your kids will love it sp much they will want to return week after week.
But seriously, this place made my kids face light up with so much joy the entire 3 hrs we were there. I can not thank them enough.
Alaina Baker-Nigh
Family membership is a fantastic deal if you have train-loving kids! Babysitters and grandparents can use the membership card, and guests are also covered, making great playdates. We did a 2nd birthday party here and it was a hit with all ages.
Noel Perez
Great place, with a lot of vehicles, a good 3 hours of time to go thru all of it
Caleb Sigmund
Cars, boats, planes, trains, trains and trains. If you like anything with wheels, you have to love this place! This place runs off of donations and admission fees, and no one gets paid (So if there is a bit of rust, then DONATE if it annoys you that bad.) Honestly, I think the rust on the trains give it more character. They also have a unique automotive collection. The MOT used to be a Missouri Pacific rail yard in the 1800's. After it was discovered, it was run by a few citizens who did it just because they wanted to preserve the history. It is now a 130 acre rail yard with cars, boats and planes. Items are always being restored by the volunteers and there is something new every year. If you are interested in anything that can transport, no matter your age, you will like the Museum of Transportation.

While there are a few aircraft and one boat on display, the National Museum of Transportation is focused on trains and automobiles. The train collection is substantial and spread out over a massive rail yard. Many of the train cars can be boarded.
Reynne Hostetler
Very nice. Only down side was it was too hot for us to do all of the trains. You could go in many of the train cars. Loved the car section.
debbie abend
Lots of fun things to see. They weren't very busy so a really nice volunteer gave us an unscheduled mini tour. Don't remember his name, but he made the tour even better with all his knowledge.
Daniel Raja
Fun place to be if you like trains and automobiles. We had a not so pleasant experience since they locked us within the museum property.
They did not make any PSA to inform us of the closing time. They did not send anyone to check if all their visitors were out. They just locked the doors and went.
We had to walk along tge train tracks and crosses over at tge railway crossing to get to the parking lot.
Drew Nichols
Very unique historical experience, perfect for anyone who loves machines and history. Great exhibits, and the volunteer staff are all passionate history buffs who love to tell stories if you are willing to listen.
Jon Cardinali
This place was pretty cool. Lived in st.louis my whole life and had no idea this was even here. They have a really awsome old train collection that you can go and look in and see how it was like in the old days. Awsome antique car collection as well. Definitely will be back, I hear they have yr passes you can purchase and we will be getting.
Angela Kanak
Very awesome place to visit! Lots of history and tons of trains!
John Pflieger
Cheap fun for everyone. Went there for hours and there are some train rides too. Take your kids so you can be jealous of the hand crank kid train they get to do while all you can do is watch wishing you could too. Then you get in a real train and its all ok again. 😄 …
neawedde4
Loved seeing all of the old history with the trains. The guides throughout the Museum knew alot of insite.
Jessica Totten
Was fun, got to ride bit too!
Darby Clarke
Great side stop on our family road trip. Kids enjoyed the train ride and the car museum. Wish we had more time to visit all the trains!
Angela AuBuchon
This is one of our favorite museums in the St. Louis area. Many huge train cars and engines. Old cars, a gift shop and more! Groupon usually has discounts to get in.
Sarah Wolf
We had a blast here! Don't go, though, if you aren't willing to pay for the train rides since you can ride it as much as possible. There was so much history! If it hadn't been so hot that day, we could've stayed all day.
Nate Shirey
Lots of things to look at from cars to trains. Be prepared to walk outside as that is where most of the exhibit is (about a mile round for what I walked). Reasonable price at $12 for an adult.
Roy Jefferson
The exhibits were nice, but the workers were very unfriendly. The only worker who was pleasant was the initial greeter when we entered the museum. All other workers just stared or ignored you.
Mitchell Horn
Great displays of all maner, make, and period of cars. The real star of the museum though is the collection of railroad equipment. Very nice collection of unique equipment. Also a decent selection of railroad memorabilia. Definatly worth the enterance fee.
Steve Hager
Great place! Especially for my two train-loving grandsons (under 10). Ride a kiddie train and the hand carts, and go through lots of real railroad history.
John Cline
Absolutely loved it, great for the Littles and for most grown-ups! Personally I was like a kid in a candy store after downing a few energy drinks!
Grantimas maximas
3 young boys, what else can I say. Our trips usually involve something they would like and the transportation museum has all of that and more. So much to see we could have spent all day but ran out of time and had to do the lunch and nap routine.
mariagotart
Groupon has a good deal for park pass right now.
Brenda Seger
It was great for the boys to be able to climb and touch all the gadgets and ring the bells. It was our 1st ever ride on an electric train! Great experience!
Ray Breakfield
Haven't been in a few years. Wow, the updates really make the museum look great. Much more of a "destination" now. If you haven't been in a while, it's definitely worth checking out.
Kevin Andert
Best place to see Santa in St. Louis. Little to no line plus you get all of the perks of the museum of transportation. Even in the winter there are enough indoor exhibits that you can move from inside to outside and not get too cold.
Ryan Young (Ryzome Ryan)
I always seem to get into it with the woman at the front desk, but otherwise the place is great. The kids love it and it's a train-lovers dream come true!
Brian Letendre
Great museum with amazing collection of trains. They could use more of the other forms, but the best trains I have ever seen. Cars inside and a couple vehicles by air and sea.
Joan Barnidge
This was great to take my kids to when they were small. Even better as an adult.
grein angie
Had lot of fun. Lots of neat trains and stuff to see on a Saturday afternoon
