Reviews of Griot Museum of Black History
Bryan Hadley
A very interesting museum with unique exhibits that are a mix of entertaining and moving. The Josephine Baker exhibit is beautiful. While the exhibit about the slave trade and the middle passage was heart wrenching and thought provoking. Definitely one of the more unique attractions of St Louis.
Adrienne Brown
The wax exhibit was excellent.the story telling was very informative I learn a lot of history there I will go back again if I am ever in town. Unfortunately we are not aloud to take pictures.
Dominique Hardin
Incredible experience visiting the Griot Museum of black history. Everything was greatly explained visually and scripted. I recommend anyone visiting or that lives in St. Louis to check the museum out!
Charrolynn Washington
My two 6yr olds were bored and couldn't quite understand ( could be a little more interactive). The three yr old was afraid and only wanted to color in the hallway. But my 9yr old found it Very Interesting. I even Learned a few things while reading to Them 😊. …

I can't recommend this labor of love museum highly enough. Without doubt a leading highlight of my visit to St Louis. Should be experienced: should not be missed.

We really enjoyed this museum. We came to St. Louisl for a weekend trip to celebrate my birthday. When we're out of town, we always try and visit an attraction that is educational. We googled black museums in STL and this one came up. We visited the Griot on Saturday early afternoon there was no wait, I did not know you havw to purchase tickets on the website, they cannot be purchased at the door, but the lady at the counter was super nice, she gave a little background on the museum and the founder, Mrs. Conley was sitting behind the counter! I told her I felt like I was standing in front of greatness! She did an amazing job with the museums, the exhibits are so interesting and you can even complete a little scavenger hunt to make sure you were paying attention. Overall, it eas a great experience, I will definitely visit again once my son is a little older and he can truly comprehend our wonder and rich history!

A very good museum detailing black history from slavery to emancipation to modern times. Life-size mannequins of major historical figures are accompanied by narratives of their contributions. Most stirring is an actual slaves quarters from a MO farm, brought to the museum from its original location.
Chris Guess
Very worthwhile experience while in STL

Visited last week. Staff was pleasant, but if you're looking for something other than what you already learned about in public school, this won't be the place. Beautiful building, but you'll see the same old stories told. There's so much more African/African American history out there that could easily be included with a little effort. I was disappointed.

Have to make a reservation before hand, no photos. Very informative!
Monica Ward
This place is AMAZING. The very first exhibit is a bit much to take in, but overall it is a hidden gem that all must take the time to see.
Nicole Broyles
It was okay. It primarily focused on slavery and religious leaders. Exhibits need updating. Disappointed as a visitor from out of state that we were not able to take pictures of any of the exhibits.
Jackie Shelby
The Black History Museum is the only one in the Greater St Louis city or county.
The founder and curator Ms Lois Conley is a great person and has devoted her life to the museum.
The historical value of the exhibits is priceless.
Mike Schleicher
This small but impressive place is a must see for anyone interested in St
Louis history. The wax figures are eerie in their realism. The displays on Senator Jet Banks and Chief Sherman George were standouts for me. The addition of some of the Senator's flashy ties is a particularly nice touch.
C Fisher
This museum had a nice variety of black historical figures, including both St. Louis specific black history and U.S. black history on the whole. They also had a scavenger hunt to complete as you moved through the exhibits.
Nice place to visit and learn a few bits of black history.

Stopped in with my son during a weekend trip to STL. What a gem! We loved the exhibitions. I would love to have had a self guided audio tour. There really is a lot of reading required for younger kids.
Adrianne Showalter Matlock
We visited while on vacation in St. Louis & would highly recommend it. Highlights both local and national events/people & gives lots of details. Well-done scenes and wax figures, interactive exhibits, and a quiz. Easy to find and right on the bus line. Staff was very friendly and gave us a delicious recommendation for lunch.

My mother took my daughters and I to the museum. They had a blast with the scavenger trivia hunt. While they were occupied doing that I watched the movie “The Middle Passage”. It was very good. Have to go back again to try my hand at the hunt.

Everyone must visit this place. It shows history through wax models from first arrival enslaved in ships, inhuman treatment during and post journey, centuries of oppression, courage of path breakers, little known heroes, growth, civil rights, modern known heroes in music, dance, politics, apparel, fashion, cosmetics, housing, education, science, religion, sports, social work, and path yet to be taken.
Maya Cotton
It was a good and interesting trip. Wish that they had more wax figures. Also it was hot in certain parts of the building...even though they tried to cool it off. ..it was hot because the building was vandalized.. other that it was a great experience. Keep up the good work.

This museum is a treasure tucked away in the city of St. Louis. The volunteer there, Ms. Alicia, is a real delight! There's great content on the middle passage and much more! Wide range of history from slavery to more recent African American leaders from St. Louis and other areas.
S Smith
This is a great place to visit. And is on many of the top 10 list for St. Louis. The walk through is about 30- 45 minutes and they have some wonderful art in the gallery downstairs. It is close to downtown.
Carolyn Alexander
I was very empress with the history and wax figures
JusTammy
Very informative place with enlightening real-like wax figures. The detail in this museum is unique and astonishing! The museum is not in the best location bur it is worth your time. It's a must see!
Natalie Burns
It's a gem of a place. Covers a wide variety of topics, from the Transatlantic Slave Trade to to the importance of Miles Davis and Josephine Baker. We easily spent 2 hours just visiting the different eras/exhibits and completing the scavenger hunt.
Barbara Jackson
Best place ever to visit!! I intentionally went to experience the Rayford exhibit in the LL Hall.
Ms Conley and staff are doing grand things here. Kudos to all of them.

This is definitely hidden gem worth going to see! The wax figures were so life-like, and the Black history presented really empowering, well developed, and authentic.
Tracy Burton
The Griot Museum of Black History on the North side of STL, Mo. A nice warm Saturday afternoon to visit during my b'day weekend. It's an old church turned into a wax museum of famous Afro-American that settled and served the STL area. Very educational & informative for young and old. KC needs a building like this in the Vine District.
Paula Bryant
I was saddened to see some of the artifacts which brought this saga to reality. My granddaughter's, 11 & 13, were taken aback to see what was actually done to our forefathers. They can't understand the why! They're just getting into history.
Henry Norris
If you are looking for presenters at your place of business, school or community center, please contact the Griot museum. First they have an awesome self pace interactive scavenger hunt tour on site. The STL DoD NGA hosted Ms. Peggy Neely Harris from the museum at our annual black history month presentation 02/21/19. Everyone who attended this session walked away motivated and hopeful on being a better person. She inspired most of us to keep pressing forward. Job well done by Ms. Harris. Ms. Peggy Neely Harris is a versatile world wide entertainer. she is a performing artist, actress and songstress. She did an reenactment of the Dred Scott v. Sandford case for her presentation. Very moving, interactive and inspirational. Once again job well done and thank you Ms. Harris and the Griot Museum.
