Reviews of Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis
A vibrant midtown museum with rotating exhibition of amazing artists from world over. It’s all free and ample parking available around the building. The large space with some video- audio displays are very interesting touch. A small cafe with a nice outdoor space to have a cup of cappuccino!
Saint Louis is a city that.is lucky to have such a vibrant arts scene, and one of the crowning jewels.is the Contemporary Art Museum. Tucked away in Grand Center, the CAM is FREE to all guests and provides several galleries of cutting-edge, thoughtful, and thought-provoking work. Stop by often and immerse yourself in their exhibits and then come back again to find something new.
Stopped by here on a whim and was glad we did. My kids loved the displays and the area upstairs where they could make their own art. I'm sure we will be returning at some point in time.
Just love this place. Did a walk through with my daughter and her fiancé; they've booked CAM for their wedding. Events Director is absolutely phenomenal!!! The spaces and art exhibits are stunning! Everyone should visit
11/10 Hidden Gem! My wife & I loved it. The artist that they showcase are phenomenal, and it's super interactive. The staff is super friendly, and it's a chill spot.
I've come here a few times, i always love the artwork and the simplistic color scheme of the museum itself. They support a lot of bipoc artists as well which is great! 💗 …
Very nice welcome when walking in, good explanation of all the art works. Space is well used, very simple but beautiful. The art works are updated regularly, hence always having a different environment. Not familiar with art in general, but definitely worth checking out and it's totally free.
The Basquiat Installation is amazing. Very well done. It's such a great venue for his works, very contemporary style. I love the children's room upstairs with appropriately themed books and toys for the visiting art Installation. Everything in the upstairs Children's room was Basquiat themed. And there was a short film being projected on the wall. The Museum itself was incredible and the cafe is full of yummy drinks and small offerings. I've been here several times for visiting installations with change seasonally and the artist talks are wonderful and they offer a lot to our local art scene. Less stuffy than the Art Museum in Forest Park, there are opportunities to interact with the art depending on who's showing there. The gallery attendants are friendly and knowledgeable about the work and the experience of the artists. The gift shop always has unique, artsy offerings that anyone would love. This is a great homeschool field trip or a great date night venue. Wonderful location with lots to offer.
A great, and free, contemporary art museum, the collection is a small but ever-changing exhibit, that is housed in a great building. Its proximity to the Pulitzer Foundation for the arts makes it a great visit. The building would be a fine work by itself, but it suffers from by comparison to its neighboring minimalist work by true master of minimalist concrete architecture Tadeo Ando’s, aforementioned Pulitzer. Try the cafe though, it’s small food offering is fresh and in a city of “restoration hardware” catalog decor it’s a perfect place to decompress.
A must go to place in STL. Free exhibits and tons of events year round. Rise cafe is pretty awesome, and there's lots of active and open community involvement here. It's hard to imagine this place being much better for the arts. Conveinent hours and easy parking. Consistently interesting exhibitions.
Lovely museum, free admission. They only have around 3 artists on display, so it's easy to move through quickly and be on your way. I'm visiting from out of town and trying to see as much as possible, so i appreciated being able to deep dive a couple of artists, and have been there and done that. They are smack dab in the middle of the Grand Center arts district, so if your thirst for art is not quenched by their offerings, you can easily mosey on over to the Pulitzer Arts Foundation or the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art.
They feature art made by kids in their community outreach programs, which was totally awesome (both the existence of these programs and some of the art by these kids!)
The buildings are art too, a very enjoyable, peaceful and relaxing place. Across the street is a wildflower garden, a must see.
A dynamic midtown museum featuring changing exhibitions by renowned international artists. There is plenty of free parking available all around the building. The vast area with some audio-visual shows is a very intriguing addition. A little café where you can enjoy a cappuccino outside!
The Contemporary Art Museum is a truly spectacular place that brings art from across the world to St. Louis, and that too for free. From paintings to installations and from indoors to outdoors, CAM is a place you absolutely don't want to miss out on visiting. The only caveat is that the art is not always family friendly.
wonderful exhibits on display. the museum rotates through different exhibitions about three times a year. definitely worth checking out. loved this place
Very nice building and a very nice scenery on the left side of the building. They were closed when I stopped by but would recommend to see the variety of art inside very inspiring.
First, while by my own admission I am not a big fan of avant-garde modern art, I go routinely to try to understand and learn. That said, the CAM has a very good rotation of exhibits, so the contents is usually fresh. There are four primary exhibit areas plus an upstairs area, plus a tiny gift shop that usually has some nice souvenirs, books, etc. Intelligent, plentiful commentary is available.
Beautiful building and beautiful art as well. I love going to see new exhibits and people who love art. Excellent place for a date
Beautiful space with a good variety of contemporary exhibits. Video, sculpture, painting, assemblage - there's typically something here for everyone.
Great experience! ❣First time going and enjoyed every second of it.🥰 It Really gives you a taste of the real world for all of those who are still lock minded.🔒Everyone there was very polite and respectful. …
Contemporary museum's all have very interesting and weird things. The St. Louis museum is a smaller one, but did have some interesting are displays. It was interesting to view the education area with art made by kids. We enjoyed our visit and it had been on my list a while.
Interesting exhibits here. Definitely worth a look along with the Pulitzer and Sheldon. Recommend coming here during the First Friday of the month. Interesting projections on the facade in the evening.
Loved this. Calming and the art here brings emotion with it. Clean place. Well staffed.
Attended the illuminating Derek Fordjour artist discussion. He spoke on his artistic process, subject matter, the tension he deliberately places in his art so you may feel and his privileged life living as a first generation American. Inspiring evening as he answered questions from the audience and mingled freely at one point talking to a young middle school age girl about her art and asking to see it she obliged. Great experience all around.
Derek Fordjour is a graduate of Morehouse College, Harvard University (Master Art Education) and received his MFA in painting from Hunter College.
Had fun visiting the CAM with my sister. We really enjoyed all the artwork and pieces. The staff were super nice and helpful in showing us around and overall the museum is really peaceful. Please go whenever you have the time! :)
it's free! a nice break from traditional art museums
You really don’t need a review to go here. This place sparks so many great and deep conversations, hosts important events for developing STL culture, and is completely free! Contemporary art is important and enjoyable to learn about, so share your deeper side with your date. Save it for an important 4th or 5th date before you decide to go steady with that special someone.
A big space, but not too much there and some of it I did not really understand. Its free, so check itnout as you might have a different opinion.
I come to St Louis for this museum! The staff are delightful, the art engaging and explorative. I cannot give this place enough stars
Loved the current exhibit. Can't wait to come back.
Nice to see a different perspective from artist. Nice gallery set up. Needs more exhibits
It’s free! Don’t think twice it’s worth a few hours and I always leave inspired
Went for a world Aids day event it was a great turn out...
We went into the CAM today and the exhibits are beautiful and impressive. The artists currently on display use their mediums to convey the world in which we live today on a multitude of levels. There was so much space to enjoy the pieces. We spent about 45 minutes here, some areas were closed off due to COVID-19, but worth the visit.
Fun, small museum. Makes a nice, quick stop to experience some local artwork. I enjoyed seeing how CAM connects and engages with the local community and schools.
The museum staff were so welcoming with their smile the moment we walked in. The exhibits were fantastic and novel. I was so impressed that visiting the museum is free considering how much effort was put into the exhibit and architect! And I thoroughly enjoyed the art library on the second floor for a chance to sit and delve further into the works we saw.
Amazing art collection, art education, helpful staff, awesome events, enjoy following their social media for all the latest updates.
This museum is one of the best I’ve visited in the country and it’s free! Also, fun to check out on First Fridays. It stays open late and has music and special guests
Very nice museum of very interesting pieces thats sure to capture the eye and mind. I had driven past this museum for some time and couldn't resist visiting today and I must admit I really enjoyed it. I wish it was bigger in size to showcase much more art pieces cause it definitely has the potential. But I highly recommend going for a visit.
Very thoughtful and high quality exhibits with knowledgeable staff.
We attended one of the loveliest weddings and it was a perfect venue!
You might think the stark, concrete walls wouldn't be a good back drop but it was a perfect canvas for the couple's vision.
The staff made quick work of moving the awesome red chairs from the ceremony area to the reception area. The bartenders were patient and friendly.
Add in the art and it was a one of a kind wedding for an extraordinary couple.
I had an interesting experience here, it was my first. Having only been to one other contemporary art museum I had an idea what to expect. My first impression was decent although I will say I expected it to be a little larger. The artists featured when I went were alright only a couple stuck out as interesting. I guess it depends when you arrive and what artists are featured.
The staff were so welcoming the moment we walked in. The exhibits were fantastic. I was so impressed that visiting is free! And I thoroughly enjoyed the art library on the second floor for a chance to sit and delve further into the works we saw.
Super awesome exhibit going on now til the 22nd of April
I had no idea this existed, though apparently it's been around in some form since the 80s.
Viewing is free. And you're going to experience minds that perceive the world much different from your own.
Not a huge visual art type myself, and still thoroughly immersed in and enjoyed the expedition.
Great exhibits . Plan to go back often. Great reading library with books on all venues of art . Friendly staff and members .
Small, intimate, well curated museum located in the arts district. Right now the Sarah Hughes exhibit excellent.
This place was so beautiful inspiring breath taking very educational the art was so healing and the artist is so amazing with their mind, heart and focus on their painting and the outcome is extraordinary definitely a good place for the whole family the sculpture was mind blowing .
Small but very interesting art and building. Great place to spend and hour.
Every visit is just fabulous!
Love it the best place I visit since I move here
a wonderful gem in saint louis, parking around the place isnt hard (just gotta know how to parallel park) and the contents of the art museum really opens ones soul. There are wonderful artists there that rotate often so i suggest visiting often. Its open and engaging and they even have a kids place upstairs with some books. The staff are all very informative on the pieces and artists collections inside and are more than willing to answer your questions. I recommend going here for a date or just some alone time if you would like.
Great place!!! We love the big sculpture in the way to the Pulitzer art foundation. We love to visit regularly and see all the new exhibits. We love all the free places available in St. Louis. This is a true gem. Don't miss it!!!!
CAM is a cool place to visit. Because they have new exhibits you should definitely come multiple times a year. Besides their rotating art exhibits they have a gift store and a siting area with lots of art books to look at. You could spend several days just looking through all of the art books. Fun place to walk through.
Wow. There is/was a hauntingly beautiful exhibit honoring all the African Americans who have been victims of police violence. I wish I remembered the artist's name. Sadly/wonderfully, I had to rather quickly leave the exhibit as it was powerful enough a statement to make me cry. The museum does a phenomenal job choosing artists; both local as well as seasoned.
Free admission for art! What more could you want? They are constantly showing art that has meaning and their staff is amazing. We are getting married there soon and their event staff has been incredible to work with!
very cool art. cool place for cool people
Great day trip! Went to see the Occupational Therapy exhibit & the experience couldn't have been better with the support of volunteers the interactive elements came alive for this participant who's been going to museums for over 50 years as well as engaging my 16 year old nephew.
Love that it connects so seamlessly to the Pulitzer another fabulous spot in St Louis' cosmopolitan Grand Center. Also find the restaurant very handy for lunch (altho' we walked to the City Diner for a burger - teenage boys ;-)
The CAM is always enjoyable. The building that it is in is as much a work of art as the collections they show here. The staff have always been a delight as well. I've attended a few events here and they are usually a unique experience that is enhanced by the atmosphere of the CAM. Also, Rise is open inside and a great spot to grab some food, a coffee or a drink.
This place is amazing! It's a great place to relax, get some work done, see some amazing art. It's a very positive environment that makes you feel good 😊
However I couldn't give them 5 starts because the rise cafe is horrible. Horrible service, horrible menu. My fruit was dirty! Like dirty with brown stuff and fur but there was no one at the counter when I went back in so I just sat it there. I was excited to try this cafe but am very disappointed and dissatisfied. Honestly the only reason I didnt ask the girl for an email or manager contact is to keep my own peace but this was a horrible first experience
Art aside - you may not have realized that it has lovely indoor and outdoor lounge and seating area. Sometimes they have a coffee stand open, but you can always bring your own hot beverage, as long as you stay out of the actual galleries with it. Admission is free for students, and that area is kinda low on good study spots.
Bring a book or homework and chill. Highly recommended.
Consistently great exhibits and just the perfect size. Really enjoy a coffee in the courtyard before or after seeing the new exhibits. The Sherald Green exhibit currently on display is absolutely incredible!
Great museum if you only have a short amout of time! . It was a beautiful collection. I like how they have the exhibits set up. Just the space in itself, is cool. I will be going back soon
CAM is an essential part of the creative community in St. Louis. I love the contrast to visiting SLAM. It's a more much more meditative environment. I've had the joy of seeing many national and international artists' work here and I am so grateful to have it in the community. The cafe is delicious as well.
Loved the special exhibits. A bit small but at it is free! A lot of thought provoking art and not at all crowded on Friday evening. I also like that it is open until 8 on certain days.
We truly in love with this place. Although we couldn't find the plane..it was a beautiful collections. I like how they have the exhibits set up and well kept. Just the space in itself, is cool. We will be going back soon. Thank you guys.
I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition, the guided tour, and the program that they had for us. It is a very beautiful facility, well designed, so as to accommodate those who might be physically challenged. I am sure that you will love it too.
The exhibits are always awesome. They even collaborate with the local schools to enhance art programs. My students completed a program in May 2018 and had work on exhibit alongside Jean Michel Basquiat that fall!
Their exhibitions are great, all the artworks presented have a unique style.
Attended a lovely event. Perfect location, wonderful people. Clean and beautiful. Great are too.
Beautiful museum. Small exhibit but it rotates.
Great museum. I would recommend a warning to parents with younger children. The exhibits right now include nudity, and the recreated sounds of a murder. Very interesting place overall.
Great place to visit. Artwork is beautiful. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable about artwork.
With thought provoking work by a wide variety of artists ranging from the local and emerging to the internationally known, the contemporary art museum St.Louis provides a refreshing and enjoyable space in which to view their ever changing galleries. No two visits to CAM are alike. In addition to the interesting works on display CAM also features a wide variety of public programs, many of which are free (this reviewer especially enjoys family day) as well as programs which engage students. Overall CAM is a wonderful place that I highly recommend.
This was really great experience at this place. Art exhibitions were great. Totally knowledgeable place, their staff was very polite, friendly and understandable to customers. Thanks guys for this lovely Art Museum.
Sooooo in love with this place. Although we couldn't find the plane..it was a beautiful collection. I like how they have the exhibits set up. Just the space in itself, is cool. I will be going back soon.
Kind staff and fun art to look at! Some of it is manipulative si bring your cleanest pair of hands
Clean spacious displays. Challenging work with incredible sculpture out side. Nehboring museum is also worth a visit. Both are free.
Such a cool place to go and look at the different artist and it even has cafe in the place
Small but always interesting, CAM offers a compact collection of art on a fairly regular rotation. With special events, a nice cafe, and later hours on Friday nights, it’s a terrific spot for a date, or to spend time in before a show at Powell or the Fox.
Wonderfully done building. But my main reason for writing is that there is a room for ‘teens’. In this room there was a four painting sequence of a woman pulling a gun out and shooting a man that intended to harm her. With all of the things going on in this world who in their right mind decided to put 4’ tall paintings of gun violence in a room designated for teens?
Great museum if you only have a short amout of time! There are only 4-5 spaces for the ART so it doesn't take a whole afternoon to see some great works!
Great experience for a family outing! Kids loved the kids area upstairs. The exhibits descriptions were very detailed and the staff was very nice and friendly.
Its free and a nice place to chill. Not much art when I went.
It was great! Very enlightening and educational. I recommend people of all races and ages go see the current work on display!
Loved it. Animal friendly and That is a plus everywhere we go
It is small, but the exhibits were interesting and was a good way to spend 30-45 minutes looking at contemporary art. It is also free which is also a plus.
super dope art. beautiful building, beautiful minimalist architecture. and it's free!
Meh. I don't think much of the design and layout of the place. Never have. Not my style. I guess. Kind of sterile and just not quite right.
But it all depends on what's there. There have been some good events there over the years.
With constantly changing exhibitions, the Contemporary Art Museum is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. They also have a cafe inside that serves a great variety of foods and beverages.
The art itself and the goals behind the work of the CAM are both incredible. I could not recommend this museum enough.
Only reason I'm giving it three stars is cause I don't get contemporary art... I gues I'm used to seeing old art, paintings, sculptures, and objects that took heart and time to create. If your a hipster go ahead and come here you'd like it. However again I'm just not open minded I guess, ohh well its free to walk around so it's not that bad
One of the best places to take in Contemporary and Modern artwork in Saint Louis. Some of that comes with a mixed bag in quality but overall they are doing a great job.
You can probably walk the whole thing in a half hour (maybe less if you don’t read anything). It’s free and had some very nice pieces while I was there. If you got time to kill, I say give this place a shot.
Best exhibits I have ever witnessed at the Museum. The Amy Sheldon exhibit alone is worth the trip. Must go before it's gone!
Come & see art for FREE! The staff at the front desk were very warm & welcoming! Definitely check out their little library on the upper floor.
Not the largest but it had some really solid exhibits that get changed fairly often which I appreciate, overall a really nice place along with some friendly staff
Had a great Halloween deal for the kids. I thought they did a great job - dj, photo booth, kids activities... Good time if you have a little one!
More than 5 stars! The building is incredible, the exhibits are always amazing, and the staff is wonderful!
I always have a great time here. They have interesting exhibits and it’s a nice modern open atmosphere.
The museum features great temporary exhibits. There is also a very nice bar/coffee shop with a great patio.
Went to see Muna hatoom's exhibition, later went for a film screening and panel discussion. Very cool place, friendly staff, would recommend. And it's free!
Very nice
I'd go back. Seemed more like a gallery than a museum.
Great subject matter on display in June when we were there. It is free. Big open spaces.
This place was neat and I have to come back. I was here for a conference which ended up just being a sales pitch. Waste of time, but I need to come back to see the super cool pieces of art that were all over.
A very great space, curated nicely. The work and pieces were very real and honest. The artists complimented one another very well.
always a good time. I recently went to the first friday art walk for the first time and I enjoyed the exhibit and the live music.
So cool, but I wish you had more exhibits!!
Lovely place with events throughout the month. I was lucky enough to get tickets to see Amy Sherald and that was a wonderful and emotional experience.
I was shocked by how great this museum was! I couldn't believe it, like all of the other museums in St. Louis, was free! Amazing peices by KAWS while I was there.
It's free! A great art space with some really strong work. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Did I mention it's free?
I don't always get "contemporary art" but this -- and it's neighbor The Pulizer". -- are wonderful places to explore. Always interesting, always neighborly, and Free.
Loved the reading area and Children’s room!!
A cozy museum that has several exhibits that are carefully selected. We took a group of middle schoolers and they enjoyed it.
I enjoy the feel of CAM and the focus it puts on a few artists at a time. It has an intimate atmosphere.
Absolutely wonderful exhibits, friendly staff, would have liked more exhibitions.
Awesome space, great exhibitions featuring contemporary art relative to St.Louis. friendly staff and it's free!
The events here are fun. The museum itself is just okay featuring local art and some of what one would loosely refer to as "art".
Awesome place but not only has about 4 exhibits at a time.
Fabulous, great curators and shows...St Louis has a gem...take advantage and expand your horizons!
Museum was free, and they let you take photos. Museum a little, but they make up for it with the work by Richard Serra outside!
The Museum is interesting! It is smaller than I thought but it is emotionally impactful.
Very nice with free admission.
I felt like it was way to small for a museum but I loved the art that was there.
There was a cool Deana Lawson exhibit. Also, I had a great gift shop experience.
Another great civic asset in the City of St. Louis. Great space to display contemporary art installations.
Great building, worth the stop by if you have time!
Wonderful presentation from the Bander Center! Beautiful display of photography exhibition.
Fantastic museum.Another gem in our fine city.Amazing art collection.
I appreciate the changing art landscape and the vibrant mix of artists they have.
Interesting and enjoyable art. They also often have activities to encourage an interest in art with children.
Very Cool Venue for a Wedding!!!..
A wonderfully Serene place to visit and relax and taken all the beautiful art and scenery and views from downtown
Great museum, there's always new and interesting works.
Definitely small but it had really neat exhibits
Love this spac and first Fridays is on point...they need better seating for this event.
Awesome architecture, great exhibits, wonderful crowed.
nice
Amazing works by up and coming artists from St Louis and Washington University grads!
This museum is awesome and so underrated!
Good, but very small. I'd plan for a 30min or 1hr visit
Wonderful people and a very friendly environment. It was a lot of fun and very stimulating.
They have fun activities for the community and everyone learns about art also.
Far out. Thought provoking. Interactive. Free. Challenge yourself and take part.
Nice but small museum. Interesting exhibits.
The guides make the tour worth it! Make sure to engage them! Plus, it keeps them from falling asleep 😉 …
Very clean and well lit with ambient lighting. Very friendly staff as well.
Nice facility. We are certainly lucky to have this art space.
Such a gem in St. Louis, and it's free!
Adjacent to the Pulitzer, we always see this place for thought provoking contemporary art.
Such a vibrant place full of amazing exhibits
Great exhibit! !!!! Super friendly stuff, very knowledgeable! !!!
Always something good going on here in mid town venue for modern art
Must go... Love the building, love the exhibitions... It's free..
Nice place if you have a lot of extra time to waste. Exhibits were not that impressive.
Cool space, interesting display of arts, great location...
Interesting and nice Liz Johnson Artur exhibit.
Great space for special events, loved the fashion show.
Free gallery with events, upstairs area for kids, constantly changing exhibits
Very unique and interesting art using a variety of mediums.
One of my favorite art museums.
Relatively small gallery space, but well used.
It's not too big, but the work is great
It's a interesting environment with a GREAT staff! They are WONDERFUL

(Translation) I liked. CAM is a museum that does not have stable collections, but rather they change every several months. It has educational programs for adults and children. I was able to see works by artists residing in St. Louis who were selected for "The Great Rivers Biennial." Interesting.

Me gustó. CAM es un museo que no posee colecciones estables sino que cambian cada varios meses. Tiene programas educativos para adultos y niños. Pude ver obras de artistas que residen en St. Louis quienes fueron seleccionados para "The Great Rivers Biennial". Interesante.
(Translation) Very interesting content and the free museum (not the temporary exhibitions); location in a very pleasant park.

Molt interesant el contingut i el museu gratuït (no les exposicions temporals) ; ubicacio en un parc molt agradABle .
Great Exhibit of Amy Sherald
