Reviews of USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial
One would never expect to see something like this in a downtown location. It's simply a very fascinating collection of memorabilia from WW 2 regarding the battleship USS South Dakota. Free entrance, very small parking lot (no RV or trailer parking). One could easily spend several hours here going through all of the collected materials. Excellent place for those with an interest in military history. Would highly recommend.
I have never seen a monument quite like this one. A very clever idea to create the outline of a battleship deck on a public park. Not a lot of parking and there are some areas that need to be better maintained, but very well worth a visit.
What a unique and honorable feat that the State of South Dakota and the City of Sioux Falls has done with this terrific ship. This exhibit is World Class and has many original displays from the original battleship. Really proud we got to see it.
The USS South Dakota Battleship which is located in a park that’s clean and quite ..The USS South Dakota was most decorated battleship in World War II 🇺🇸
The USS South Dakota was built for the United States Navy in the 1930s. The first American battleships designed after the Washington treaty system began to break down in the mid-1930s, the South Dakotas were able to take advantage of a treaty clause that allowed them to increase the main battery to 16-inch guns. 🇺🇸
Closed on September 30th, but still available for a walk-around. The site gives you a good idea about the size of a battleship and some of the equipment on it.
Absolutely amazing look into the history of this storied WWII battleship. The short concrete wall around the site shows you the "footprint" of the deck of the ship to illustrate its size. Several guns and other parts of the actual ship are set in place in the area of the deck. The radar array is here. One of the anchors and a length of the actual anchor chain are also here. You can try to lift the chain, I got 2 links, lol. Inside is where the real history comes to life. Very personal items from many collections.
Museum is located in a small one floor building. There is a small gift store. It took us up to an hour to see all the exhibits inside and take a tour around the museum. It’s very educational and interesting for kids and adults.
So, im currently on a cross country walk to raise awareness for veteran homelessness and mental health. Today, to celebrate July 4th, im walking for 22 hours. What a pleasant surprise to be able to walk past this. I had no idea it was here but was definitely delighted to see it! Happy freedom day America!! Be sure and thank a veteran!
Loved the location and the curator there was so knowledgeable about all the stuff in the museum we walked and talked for hours I could honestly stay there for weeks great location and very near and well maintained 10 of 10 would recommend for anyone to visit
Remarkable. Emotional. Sentimental. Battleship X USS South Dakota (BB 57), with its combination of Navy Unit Citation and 13 battle stars, was the most decorated battleship of World War II. For security purposes, she was called “Battleship X” after her first major battles, to prevent the enemy from identifying the top-of-the-line battleship.
Everyone needs to see this memorial. Its very informative and touching to learn about the men who served on her and the 95 who died.
Beautiful museum and free, the 30 minutes documentary of the USS SD Battleship is very informative.
This was one of our last stops for the day and something fun for the kids to experience. The lady working was very friendly and informative. If your going threw Sioux Falls, SD you must stop
What a great place for all to visit. Especially former Battleship sailor. 13 battle stars in 4 years...I can't say enough about this place. Sending all ship mates that way...
Wonderful piece of history located by the zoo. Many artifacts from WWI and WWII. It's free admission and the souvenirs are cheap ($5 minimum on card purchases). Definitely worth the visit!
Amazing display of American Heroes and resolve. God bless the men who served on this mighty warship and the ones who payed the ultimate price for their service 🙏. …
Don't miss this amazing memorial to one of the most decorated ships in WW2!
The outside with the displays of guns and ship equipment was amazing. But the museum in the building is wonderful. There you can see models and artifacts like a flag from the IJN Nagano the only surviving Japanese battleship at the surrender at Tokyo bay
We weren't able to go inside because it's off season, but the memorial laid out in the lawn is epic. A must see!
My grandfather was on the USS South Dakota and I have been to many a reunion,my daughter and I were in SD for a concert and stopped by memorial on what would have been by grandfather's 102nd birthday,my grandpa and grandma picture is hanging at memorial, brought back alot of memories for me❤
What an amazing job they did! We got there early and the very kind woman let two of my Boy Scouts Present the Flags! They are still talking about it.
Very interesting artifacts and trinkets from WW2 about this battleship
Very well put together, staff member was very knowledgeable
We stopped here because it was on the way to our Airbnb and we had a little time before we needed to check in. What a great stop, we learned so much and really have an appreciation for what all those servicemen gave. I would recommend this a stop if you have a little time. The staff is knowledgeable and really passionate.
This is a good 1 hour stop while in Sioux Falls. Although the actual battle ship is no more, they created an illusion of you standing on the ship. You can see the guns and the radar etc .. If you speak into the large gun at one end, your friend can hear your cool echo through the other end! Try it. Fun fact:
USS South Dakota was the most decorated battleship in WWII.
Kids sure had fun climbing about. Such a neat way to display a ship!
Great little museum with lots about the battleship that it honors. Definitely recommended.
A very fine memorial and worth the stop. Just be sure and actually go into the museum, most folks miss lt!
So much to see and read about inside the museum building. Various artifacts from the BB to see, also some old equipment from the time period of the first USS South Dakota, pretty neat.
Much to learn about, and the true to life outline of BB 57 outside is about the best you can do in a land-locked state.
Very much like the USS Arizona memorial down in Arizona.
There is no charge to visit the museum, though they do have a donation box. The staff are really friendly and helpful.
It's always interesting to learn new things about the ship.
The outside structure is fun and interesting, but the inside is completely fascinating! The museum is only OPEN May 1 thru September 30.
I was there 2 Days ago and one of your guides said that South Dakota went after battleship TIRPITZ that is not true I'm fact it was USS Washington a north Carolina class battleship that was about to engage until TIRPITZ turned away but besides that this place is amazing
Excellent museum and memorial. The memorial allows you to stand right in the middle and see just how large this battleship was. The museum is free but they take donations. There are so many historic artifacts and models on display one can spend hours there.
It does a great job of telling the history of this great but short lived battleship. I didn't know anything of this ship's WW2 exploits before going there.
It's pretty amazing work. Standing here today visually imagining this old ship..large concrete outline of exact dimensions, towers, cannons, propellers etc. You can imagine standing in it back then. Also there is a museum with lots more details. Souvenirs. Penny crusher.
Good area if your driving through or love history.
Outline of the Battleship adorns the grounds with several pieces of military hardware from the USS South Dakota. The visitor center had some amazing models and several pieces of historical value. Nice stop off to see and experience.
This was a stop on a cross country drive. A little-known memorial it was very unique. Because they couldn't bring the actual battleship they build a cement outline of the ship and brought various items from the ship deck to display within the cement outline. At the center is a wonderful museum filled with photos, artifacts, videos and some items to buy. But best of all it is staffed with a knowledgeable volunteer who genuinely cares about the exhibit.
This is located in a beautiful park and because it's low-profile it's easy to miss. We bought sandwiches and had a picnic before we explored the "ship". We missed it, but it does have it's own private parking lot located right outside the museum. You have to be going the right way on the main street to enter.
I was skeptical of this, but had wanted to stop at "different" things on our trip. It was a quick stop, but well worth it. What a great tribute and memorial.
Didn't even know there was a Memorial until in Sioux City. Neat place to visit.
Great history lesson full of interesting artifacts and historical pieces.
A great installed of history! The kids love running around and they can get a real feel for the size and what it might have been like. Good information and we will go back when the visitor center opens in may.
Very interesting! Glad we decided to pull in and see what this was all about.
Free memorial. Very well done with lots of memorabilia and person stories. We loved it!!
We have come here before and our most recent visit was on Memorial Day. What a great experience to talk to our kids about the sacrifices so many have made for our country. One of my boys wants to join the armed forces when he's old enough. This is a great resource to expose people in South Dakota, and the midwest, to the accomplishments of our navy.
Really great. The outline of the ship was good to walk and read about the ship. You could spend hours inside reading all the displays and looking at the donated items. Very interesting.
Great pieces to review, nice host, excellent details to go with artifacts.
It was fabulous and I learned a lot of things!!❤️
Small, but full of collectables and memorabilia. The person gave as many interesting informations and backgrounds. It was like a private tour. And no, there is no ship but lot of interesting stuff about the USS South Dakota. Worth the visit. Recommended.
Very cool, lot of artifacts and pictures!
It's small but it is great that they were able to save what they did. It's an important ship that needs to be remembered and I am glad that they found away to keep the memory of the ship alive. Its worth a visit if you are in the area.
Very informative, worth the visit. Not only learned something new, but also corrected something I THOUGHT I knew. That cement outline of the ship was eye-opening. Almost 1200 people crammed into that space. I couldn't live like that no matter how many potatoes I peeled or planes I shot down. Glad I was an Army grunt...
Alot of information that I did not know about the battleship and it's crew. Been wanting to see it for years, never took the time, ashamed of myself. Very impressive. Plan to go back again, by myself so I can take my time.
What a wonderful memorial!! The staff was all so nice & the grounds & inside were well kept! It was a nice place for all ages!
Really neat how the ship is displayed! Disappointed that the building is only open seasonally. Would've liked to go through it.
It's not open right now but it was still pretty cool.
The guy running the place is really knowledgeable, and friendly. We had fun talking to him as we walked around the museum part.
Would love to see the whole ship but they did a good job on displaying the pieces they did saved worth the visit
Such a meaningful experience the son of a WW 2 sailor of the USS Iowa to see this. Just awesome to visit this
I loved looking at the names of the people who served our country. You will go away with a sense of appreciation. There is also a piece of decking from the ship, which was my favorite part.
This is an amazing memorial. It was fantastic history lesson for my kids. I also learned that my grandfather was in the color guard for the dedication.
Outline of the most decorated ship of world war 2. With gun placements an a decent museum with free entry. They take and you should give donations.
Very nice
In the middle of the city they made a memorial to a brave ship & crew 👍
The staff - a senior lady - was a bonus to my visit
Congrats 👏👏👏 …
Was very interesting. The kids even enjoyed learning and playing. Cool place.
Really well done memorial. We were very impressed. Volunteer workers were awesome
Really enjoyed the museum. The display was amazing and informing, Inside and outside.
Very nicely done displays, interesting pieces
The longevity and knowledge of the staff is incredible.
Worth the stop if you are in the area. A nice memorial to the men and the arm forces that served our country.
It was closed when it was supposed to be open. Outside exhibits we're interesting
Always go and visit places like this to pay your respects.
Very neat stop and great way to get a perspective on the size of these massive ships and equipment!
Nice memorial / small park, just a short stop but shouldn't be considered a major attraction like TripAdvisor had suggested.
Pretty awesome if you take the time to walk around and really read about the history of the ship, what it has done, and the actual equipment from it.
We visited after the visitors center had closed, but it was a really nice memorial to walk around and view!
You can get a sense of history and size. Great walk-around for a vet with his kids.
Great experience! There was a lot of neat authentic artifacts and staff that was helpful and friendly.
Took the kids here to learn a little history. They had fun playing outside of the museum. Closing for the season 9/30
Really cool my kids thought that it was AWESOME to see what stuff looked like on the real ship
It has many pictures and actual uniforms, equipment taken from the original ship and an outline of the ship with the anchor. My dad was in the Navy in WW II.
Any place that honors the brave men and women that served our country during any military conflict will always get 5 stars from me. God Bless America.
I appreciated the plaques, but there is not much to see here strictly for those interested in history.
Souix Falls has some awesome things to see. Start here.
Very creative display symbolizing the battleship. I have traveled through a few times and made sure to bring colleagues to see it too
The staff are very knowledgeable about what the battleship was and have provided information that, even as a sailor, I didn't know
Very cool. Great story on battleship X
Awesome to see. They did a very nice job
It had so much interesting things an pictures in side, love going threw it 😀😀 …
By far one of the best historic military memorials I have seen. Worth the visit!
It's amazing the museum is nice and the out side area is veary good
Great historical monument! Loved the displays of military memorabilia from the ship.
Cool idea to have the outline. The museum is small but good.
Nice place and free will donation to get in.
Nice area
It was neat. Lots of history. Not a lot of fun for our 4 year old.
The main building was closed when I was there. The outside was a cool 10 minute visit.
Wish I could have gone inside. We didn't know that it has seasonal hours.
Staff was very friendly and the place is clean and well maintained.
It might be a historical place but literally there is nothing else to see except the things which you see in the pictures.
Love the USS South Dakota!! Been here several times and it never disappoints!
very nicely displayed, gentleman working there was very nice
Lots of information and some neat artifacts. You can see the whole thing in about an hour.
Very interesting, a nice memorial to a key ship that fought in WWII.

Great visit 😃 😃😃😃😃 😃 …
Here's the caveat - we visited in March, while the Visitor Center is closed for the winter months - but we walked the grounds and are looking forward to visiting when the Visitor Center is open.
On the grounds, they've preserved some items including a mast, main gun barrels, secondary gun barrels, and anchor.
