Reviews of Pettigrew Home & Museum
Yohi Sivakumaran
A small museum with two story building! Can be fully seen in two hours…. A very good maintenance.. Friendly staff.. one staff available for explains the things.. Whatever questions asked, they answered with happy face! Good hospitality!! No rush at all… Free entrance… really enjoyed!!

The home is stunning, and it was very interesting to learn about how it was added on to over the years. The Lincrusta wallpaper is an incredible site to see! The layout of the home also has some very unique aspects I've never seen in any other historic home I've toured, including the round, marble-topped radiators! Two drawbacks are that much of the furnishings are period but not original and that a number of items collected over decades by the owner are no longer part of his museum (a sad comment on the descendants who seemingly did not honor the wishes of the owner when he willed the home to be used by the city as a museum). That said, it is still well worth a visit.

I really enjoyed this mansion. The house is beautiful and it's wonderful to experience how they lived a 100 years ago. It's amazing that this mansion is free, as other mansions I've toured usually have a charge. Something about the original owner of the home required that it it be maintained as a free museum. Our tour guide was excellent and knew all the answers to my esoteric questions. Old mansions like this simply require a tour guide to make the most of the experience, and this was an excellent example of that.

I am quite impressed. Normally a home tour like this would cost $5-10 but this is absolutely free. That's my favorite price. The tour of the home is guided and you have to wait...but they have a museum wing where you can pass the time looking at displays. What a great idea. The house itself is gorgeous. Well worth a visit. Forget five stars. This is ten.

The attendants and staffs really know the history of the Pettigrew family and the museum portion after the guided tour is well worth the time. You'll learn alot about Plains history and the Pettigrew family.

The day my husband and I stopped here they gave us a tour of the house. Make sure you don't touch anything. If you have little ones you probably need to put a leash on them (seriously). When we took the tour I couldn't wait until it was over with because there was a woman with her kids and the smallest one kept throwing tantrums and the older daughter was trying to help and the mom would scold the oldest one.
The place is interesting and all but we just had a bad experience due to this broad not being to control her children. The staff were nice and tried to help by distracting the kid; anyways the kid was just being a kid.

The Pettigrew Home & Museum has free guided and self-led tours. I do believe that it is handicap accessible as I recall seeing an elevator. The tour guides were friendly and quite knowledgeable and eager to answer our children's questions. The museum holds many interesting pieces of history and artifacts which we were told that Mr. Pettigrew was quite fond of and we were particularly fascinated with the exterior of the home which we were told that Mr. Pettigrew was fond of the petrified wood and desired it for his home. If you are ever in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota do make this museum one of your must-see sites.

The house tour was Amazing! Seeing a house set up so true to the 1920s was quite the experience! Well worth a quick visit. We saw the whole museum and the house in an hour.

Terry Harroun
A beautiful home. It is furnished the way that Mr
Pettigrew left it, and the Pettigrew family had very good taste.
Max Browning (Max)
One of the best historical homes I've ever been to. Randy was our guide and he was awesome.

This house is the pride of Sioux Falls. If you haven't visited it, you should take the time to stop in for a tour. It's absolutely beautiful! 💕
Jeff D
Neat to see the historic home of SD's first senator as it was when he lived there. A beautiful home. I recommend visiting if you have time. There is a museum attached on the back of the house also.
Jou Jou
A great place to visit in Sioux Falls. A lot of history!
Leatherpunk Matt Rezac
The Pettigrew Museum is one of the only, (if not the only) historical home open to the public in Sioux Falls. Part of the structure is open for you to walk around and explore at your own leisure and features antiques and other items from SD including old guns, Native American weaponry, clothing, etc.
The exciting part of this museum is the guided tour where the house was left (for the most part) exactly how it was when it was lived in. You'll tour the kitchen, parlor, bedrooms, and even the bathroom. (no pit stops allowed). It's always fun to explore old houses!

I loved this museum as a child and now. The tour guide did a wonderful job. My 9 year old grandson actually chose to go here. We had a great time! My hometown all in one place.
Brad Sando
Interesting place and can't beat the price to visit, since it is free.
Savannah B.
Very knowledgeable tour guides. Loved the history! Still hard to wrap my head around the fact that he built his own museum! Such a cool experience!
Lauren
Nice historic house and cute museum about the history of Sioux Falls!
Brad Mausbach

Meka Kick

Dana Brown

Olivia Loving
Even though it is really small, we learned a lot! It's crazy how much has changed since then!! Awesome designing in the house and great museum all together.
Stephanie Davis
Fun place to take the kids in this cold weather
kathleen kennedy
Brought my granddaughters, ages 8 and 11. They loved it! The 11-year-old said she could actually live there :-) Free admission and a not too long tour makes it a great activity for grandkids and grandparents alike. The building is amazing and the furniture / wallpaper / collections are great to see.

The first full term senator in South Dakota, his house has been turned into a museum. There's a 25 minute video; it's good to watch explains the house and things from that time period. Then you can tour yourself. You have to actually have a guided tour, however, for the house part where Pettigrew and his wife lived. You can do it all in an hour and half; I mean unless you're a stickler about reading every single placard throughly. There is no gift shop but you can buy postcards, which I did. Staff is really nice offering tours that are about 10 minutes to length. Beautiful library.
thomas braden
A good taste of the local history with exhibits from across South Dakota and throughout the years - all free!
Lee Haston
Good tour our guide was knowledgeable and it was an interesting history lesson about early Sioux Falls.
Andrea Donadio
Hands down, one of the best house tours I’ve ever taken (and I have taken a few). The gorgeous Victorian home itself is resplendent with a variety of original furniture, fixtures, and artifacts. What was not personally owned or installed by Senator Pettigrew is mostly period correct, and lovely! I also really liked a peek into the kitchen, as most old homes leave that, and other service focused rooms, out. Further - our tour guide was FANTASTIC. He was super knowledgeable about the home and Sioux Falls history. We learned a lot! Also it’s free!!!!
Fedilia L.
Many interesting things to see. Definitely a great place to learn about the past. You might have to ask for a tour guide yourself if you want one. The last time we were there they only looked at us (No greetings or explanations) and we went ahead venturing ourselves to look at the exhibits. However, later on, a tour guide intercept us and he showed us around. However we ended up doing everything in reverse. Also, if you are the type of person who loves to look at everything in more details, the tour guide may be a little bit too fast in moving on from one exhibit to the other.
Diane Krier
Very nice. Absolutely beautiful inside ! They refurbished so you really can see what luxury was years back! Our tour guide and receptionist were welcoming and very knowledgeable! Our granddaughters never thought about the Old Days. Thanks again

This place is super cool, we love things like this, the young lady from West SD was super friendly(brunette or red haired lady).. the other woman (blondie) was not friendly and helpful at all, she thought I was a bother when I asked if she could start the movie in the movie room. Either way will definitely return here
Andrea Chambers
Was in Sioux Falls visiting family and stopped by this museum to see the old artifacts and furniture in the house. I thought the free tour was informative. It was enjoyable learning about the history of Sioux falls and fun to see the old furniture, including the old ice chest! I didn't think the tour was too long and the museum itself (not the house) was interesting to read.
Doug Junker
Wonderful historic perspective of Sioux Falls from a local time period I did not know much about (Make sure you take the guided tour). Once you are done you can drive around them local historic district to check out the other vintage houses.
Abdul Azim

This place was really interesting! My boyfriend and I went here one afternoon and it was so cool to learn about what life was like in Sioux Falls way back when. The staff was very knowledgeable... Our tour guide was the maintainance guy and he knew a ton about the Pettegrew family. And best of all it was totally free!
Natalie Acheson

Jordan Winter
In addition to being Pettigrew's personal residence, the museum has a lot to show about Sioux Falls' early history too. Be sure to check out the surrounding Cathedral Historic District if you're interested in seeing more beautiful homes.
Jess Ehm
Free! A super cool, quick way to learn more about Sioux Falls history. Free tour through the house itself lasts about 30 minutes. Free Muesem to browse through at your leisure. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable.
Anastacia Jensen

Kevin Crum
Good account of Mr. Pettigrew's life in Sioux Falls and the Dakota territory. He was elected in 1889 as South Dakota's first U.S Senator and served two terms in the U.S. Senate. Additionally, there was historical records on his political views and the parties he was affiliated with, including the Populist Party.
Lew L
Extraordinary home and woodwork. The museum part was extremely well done with knowledge. I am dissappointed that the wall coverings have not been popularized to be easily done for today's walls.
Melissa White-Durbin
House tour was interesting, Museum part wouldn't interest younger children, more reading is required than actually stuff to look at. As an adult it was interesting to me.
dqchris22
Very cool old home with a lot of history. Loved to see the petrified wood mortared into the side of the home. So cool.
Jefmcc7475

I was lucky enough to go when the only person available to give the tour was the man that has been the caretaker for many years. He was most informative.
