Reviews of U.S. Naval Undersea Museum
What a great museum! We took our kids, 6 & 4 years old the other day. Pay attention to the hours because we went on Tues and that's the only day they're closed. But when we went back we had a nice time! There were a lot of interactive displays to keep the kids entertained! Their favorite was looking out the periscope and swinging through the doorway! I loved learning about the dolphins and sea lions too! We will definitely be returning!
This is a must-see museum. It is very well laid out and detailed in what they share. There are lots of things to read, listen to, pictures, short videos, actual artifacts, letters, and machinery. I got a great education and appreciation for what our men and women in service have done for our great country and how it was accomplished. The kids I saw there seemed to really enjoy it, too! The volunteers there were also very knowledgeable and answered many of our questions.
This is a definite “guy” place. Interesting exhibit of WWII and other undersea weapons including submarines, torpedoes, comm systems and charts of the oceans. One display of tectonic plates was most informative.
Figure on two hours for a cursory “walk through” we spent most of an afternoon there and didn’t see everything.
Well worth the trip. Many thanks to knowledgeable docents
Amazing museum, made me feel just like a kid again. It is free yet I learned a lot about submarine warfare and underwater work. It is just way too cool, if I had a kid I would bring him here. They got torpedoes, mines, you can see the inside of a submarine, diver suits, underwater drones and a whole other stuff. We were greeted by real vets at the entrance, I was very glad to meet Carl, one of them. I am sure you will enjoy it here.
Largest collection of torpedoes in the world (not all displayed I’m told). Displays various parts of torpedoes and what’s inside them. Covers life on the submarine. Video of mariners experiences. Discusses transition to accepting blacks, women, LGBT, etc. History of submarines and torpedoes and their importance during Cold War and where we are today. Role of dolphins and sea lions in tracking lost missiles. Etc etc etc. Excellent museum!
This museum is a great place to visit if you have any interest in things submarine. The exhibits are fascinating and informative. Just the section on torpedoes is worth the visit. It will take you about 2 hours to see everything. And it's free to visit.
When my brother came out from Ohio to visit and he's ex-Navy seal. We took our him and our son to go check out this Free museum. There is great volunteers that explain everything, a giftshop and a little store about 1/2 mile drive away that makes the best pissa and milkshakes.
Some of the museum was closed due to reconstruction. We didn't know this before making the drive up to see the museum. However, my boys still enjoyed the museum and learned a lot about the history of the navy and the things that go on underwater. This museum is free and there's also a gift shop!
Yes a definite WOW!
The displays were amazing. It was a fabulous day. We will definitely be back.
Great museum about the history of underwater warfare. It is free to enter and very well organized displays. Good for all ages.
This was a cool stop for the Naval history nerds and science geeks!
Super cool history of flintlock floating keg bombs all the way to modern torpedoes. Including the first adjustable pitch prop that was invented in 1873 and self regulates the pitch based on drive speed!!! This was cool to see modern turboprop technology born in a 1873 torpedo impeller!
Science of the sea and instruments used to take readings and why they are important to a submarine navigation and sensing systems. Many displays here were not functioning, but the static instruments were still cool to see engineered simplicity for depths and unknown bottoms.
There are torpedoes, and mines. There are also command bridges, nuclear missile mock ups, and how to escape an underwater sub!
There is a section on animal training and partnership with the Navy. During training, one of those animals even found 1 of the early adjustable pitch torpedoes in the training harbor (there were only 50 made, so that is a really cool find 120 years later).
I did not get to spend much time with the animal training, scuba and rebreather technology, or whatever else was on that side. The museum was closing, and I had spent a lot of time being fascinated by the amazing early and complex engineering in the torpedo section. I mean aligning the impellers to noise cancel each other, or using chemical-electrical engines to increase range and reduce wake and thermocline signatures: who wouldn't be fascinated.
Outside there are cool deep sea vehicles. One carries steel ballast down and drops it to resurface back from 20,000 feet! This beast only carries 2 people and uses gasoline as positive ballast that does not compress at depth to prevent the hull from imploding!
Seriously; a free museum that one should definitely need out at! Many of the displays could have been set up better to highlight the amazing STEAM that has continued in the Navy's history to present. Bring your science tutor to explain the wonders you are actually viewing and you will have a blast!
Okay the cool torpedo stored kinetic energy as potential in a massive flywheel revved up by steam, and the pitch of the impellers changed based on the residual rotational speed of the flywheel. When the flywheel stopped, the torpedo stopped. It would not have left an exhaust heat signature and was an elegant piece of hardware. Brilliant!
Really enjoyed this place with my 4yo. Mostly he liked to explore area about training dolphins and sea lions, a lot of buttons to push for hearing animal sounds.
Also submarine command room with working periscopes was a great thing.
In general good museum with a lot of educational information and it's free of charge for visit!
I was so much fun! My teenagers loved it! We learned quite a bit! Definitely a must!
What an awesome and amazing Naval museum! I was taken through a long journey across different naval departments. Although I am a foreigner, I very much appreciate the services and work of the Naval soldiers/sailors.
Great displays of Naval artifacts from early mines and torpedoes to search and recovery. Lots of interactive displays and photos as well as video. I learned a great deal from my self guided tour. A very well supplied gift shop is there for those looking for a special gift or a great souvenir. Restrooms are clean and well maintained!
If you're interested in military, Naval and/or United States history, you're going to love this place. The curators do a fantastic job of keeping the displays entertaining and informative. There is something for everyone. My first grader loves the hands on exhibits.
Great place but didn't have exhibit showing cutout of crew sleeping quarters, would have been nice but oh well. Staff super friendly. Great gift shop. Free admission.
Very educational!
Everything was explained in easy to understand language and pictures.
The detente section had a fine history of the nuclear deterent of subs and a nice wall with photos of Obama and Carter signing treaties. Obama and Carter? Not one photo or mention of the one President who did more to end the cold war than any other, President Reagan. Not one. Whomever is in charge of the museum, please leave your political biases aside. Report history accurately or not at all.
Very nice place. Lots of parking and friendly docents.
Great museum! And free too, so detailed and it’s run by volunteers. Such a great place if you are ever in the area you should stop by. P.S they have a lovely gift shop too.
All about the US Submarine service. Many artifacts I've only read about, such as SeaLab. More torpedoes in one room than you've ever seen before! Good explanations of how torpedoes work. Honest statements about discrimination again women and minorities in the past, and how it is being corrected.
Awesome place! Free but donations are appreciated. My kids loved it too! They thought it would be lame but not at all! Was a very educational place. The dolphins and seals helping to keep us safe was something few realize!
What fun & super informational! The kids had a great time, now i just need to go back without them so i have time to look at everything they just ran past.
Clean, easy to navigate through. Restrooms, drinking fountain, gift shop, coloring area for kids, dress up & play station also.
The museum not only gives the insight of what it is like to live on a Submarine but also gives a really nice science lesson at the beginning of the self guided tour. My boys enjoyed all of the hands on exhibits and the gift shop.
Awesome museum with tons of old hardware to look at. Interactive exhibits and enough info to spend all day here learning.
Awesome. Loved it. I learned a lot. Too much to see not enough time. Plan to return.
Free museum showing the history of submarine warfare. Friends of ours work on the base and took us to see the museum. I could have stayed all afternoon. Some of the deep sea research and rescue craft are in the parking lot. Inside are many of the torpedoes used through history as well as a detailed account of the USS Thresher loss.
Impressive displays of the history of underwater trials and errors as well as success. I found very interesting the use of seals and dolphins and how they are trained.
This is awesome. Mostly focused on submarines and submarine technology. Awesome stem activities in the summer. Absolutely SUPERB, fantastic interactive exhibits for younger kiddos, plenty of info for older people as well.
Excellent museum! The tour guides have all worked on subs - they are extremely knowledgeable and are eager to answer your questions.
Great museum locale chock full of historic naval artifacts. Exhibits heavily oriented toward history of underwater mines and torpedoes. Very cool opening exhibit on oceanography and sub-surface layers of the sea. Extremely well-written and informative posters explain in clear details the naval artifacts on exhibit. Great gift shop. Take a deep dive here! P.S. Don't miss the famous deep-sea research sub "Trieste" and underwater rescue vehicle parked outdoors across from the front entrance.
We chanced on this at random but was worth the stop. My son was well intrigued seeing real torpedoes and other interesting works of the US Navy. This is free and so worth it. On the day of our visit we actually got to talk to some former officers who had been on one of the submarines. Awesome!
This is a fantastic place to stop.I highly recommend it! The Navy has done a fabulous job of letting you experience the undersea world. I highly recommend it for everyone and particularly for anybody who have family that served in the Navy and especially who have served aboard submarines. Submarine exhibit are very informative and very well done.
While we were there they had an exhibit for the Thresher disaster. What a moving tribute to those brothers that paid the ultimate price in service protecting our freedom in tbe Untied States.
Had a great time walking around. And for free you can't beat it. Great history of submersibles and the trials and warfare that go along with it. The breakdowns 4 the torpedos is awesome. Good job guys. The history on service mamals was interesting.
Loved this museum! Very, very well done. Lovely. All around. I especially love the interactive area for kids to design and build.
We visited with our son who served on a submarine. He was able to give us additional insight in what we were seeing/looking at. We were there for 3 hours and would suggest spending 3 to 4 hours to see it all.
This a must see museum! You will learn so much. Men that greet you in lobby are retired submarine military and full of stories they may or may talk about if you ask them.
Free admission museum great for all ages. We took a 3- and 4-year-old and they were entertained. Adults could've stayed longer!
The museum is a little small but is a great time. There is a lot of information on how submarines began and what explorers did. There are some interactive sets for the kids and videos for those of us who don’t like to read everything. Fun for the whole family!!
One can easily spend a whole day at all the exhibits. In depth, well written, legible, well-lit descriptions and background at each window or item, be they about ancient diving, War of Independence, Civil War, or 20th Century, with some actual retrieved equipment more than a hundred years old. Helped give context to things I saw and heard about as a young boy in a UDT family in Coronado in the 1950s.
This place is a hidden gem. The facility and exhibits are far above what one would expect with free admission. Check out a real Trieste bathyscaphe, dry docked in its entirety for your viewing amazement, right next to the parking lot. Wander among the various Bond-like gizmos from SEAL combat tech to deep-sea diving suits. Explore all sorts of submarine features, including a sub control room and a decommissioned ICBM MIRV. Lots of wow factor and STEM education opportunities for kids and adults. Easy parking and a friendly and informative staff.
I brought my fifth grade class to the museum for a field trip. We did a scavenger hunt in the museum, a lesson in the planetarium, some time in the robotics lab, and--of course--the big event of the day, the chance to try out the students' Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in the big water tank. This is one of the highlights of the year for my class!
Nice museum with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I wish there was more to see! But it was free entry and cool gift shop.
Really neat stop. Interesting exhibits. Passing by, definitely worth a stop. Kid friendly. Fairly cheap.
Informative exhibits covering submarines, physics, wildlife. And naval personnel lifestyle. Informative and helpful docents.
Great exhibits, very informative and an overall good time at a very well run museum.
A great museum to spend a rainy day. Very kid friendly and interactive.
Well done science and history exhibits. I was most fascinated with the use of dolphins and Sea Lions to find and retrieve objects deep in the ocean.
Great museum for people interested in naval history and the contributions of NUWC Newport. Free admission.
One of the best museums I have been to. Highly recommend!
Outstanding Museum! Lots of good information and detail on the history of the US NAVY Submarine Force!
One of the best museum experiences I've had in years! Surprisingly fun and interesting. If you're in the area, don't miss it.
This is one of my favorite museums. It has the professionalism and science content that I expect from the submarine service. Just be careful that your gps doesn't try to take you to the main entrance to the missile sub base to get there. The museum is right outside the security gate near Keyport.
My 4 year loved it here. Being able to show my family what I do without having to go into the boat.
The exhibits are extremely well done and interesting to read about the history of everything.
museum layout and flow seem to encourage parton movement toward closed areas, otherwise it’s a well-informed interactive museum with some cool engineering and historical information.
Only discovered this place when we saw signs from the highway.
Really glad we stopped off for the FREE museum. Spent a couple of hours inside & learnt a lot !
Even though part is being renovated, we still had a great time. They have a donation box. It's free admission. And I've got things in the parking lot you can look at too before you even get in. We got there when it opened, and there was some other people coming in to see it too. I highly recommend it.
Great museum for submarines, torpedo, mines and any other undersea weapons, plus Naval history. Free entry, well maintained, and awesome staff!
Can't beat the price of free. Fun to see the evolution of Navy technologies. Great for kids, also be sure to stop by on a Saturday as they advertise a hands-on activity.
This is a first class museum. Very clean, up to date, and has impressive displays. And it gets better, it’s FREE!
A deacon guided our tour providing life dynamics to the exhibitions. Very enlightening and enjoyable.
Awesome place. I learned a lot. I recommend anyone/everyone come here.
Very neat and interesting. Loved looking at all the displays.
Small museum but has a lot of cool stuff
Much to see. Displays of actual equipment. History of undersea warfare and more. Professionaly displayed. Well worth a visit. Especially liked the details evolution of control, sensing, and propulsion systems. More than just military use.
One of the best museums for submarines. There is so much to learn and you can play around in an actual control room from an older submarine.
This place is free, but would appreciate a donation.
Go check it out and you will not be disappointed.
Beautiful museum, full of volunteers who have a lot of information and are happy to share. Great programs for kids - check out their summer time STEAM activities! Admission is free, and many things are hands-on including an exhibit of the bridge of a submarine. Very enjoyable experience ❤️
One of the most awesome museum's around. The exhibits are so interesting and interactive. Highly recommend
Very interesting and informative. Layed out nicely for good flow, so didn't feel crowded.
Fun, free, informative place. The volunteers are all very kind. There is a ton to see and read, but you can also stop here for a quick visit with kids.
Great to find a free meseum. Very meet desplays and nice staff. Maybe a little dated as meseums go.
This is a great place! All of the exhibits are interesting and well made. The staff is very helpful and kind. There was a kid’s stem program on the day we happened to be there which our kids enjoyed. I highly recommend!
Very cool museum. Had a great time here for a couple hours. Staff was friendly and informative.
Great place to take the kids and an amazing amount of information regarding underwater weaponry, rescue, education.
An accredited naval museum ideal for youth. Exhibits primarily focused on underwater work and history not just warfare. Very educational and free.
We had a lot of fun here. We saw that it was free and was expecting a smaller space but we were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see. The volunteers were very nice and knowledgeable as well.
So well done and so much to see!
I you are interested in underwater technology this is the place for you. Could have more and interactive displays concerning life abourd
Very interesting place. As a US NAVY VET I was very surprised and pleased to see just how much was on display.
Also the gift shop had very affordable items and also was very beautifully displayed.
I would definitely go again with friends.
Museum well done. Having worked on a defense program that hunts submarines it was a very interesting display of life on a submarine. Can't help but wonder how close the movies got to portraying reality.
Absolutely worth visiting. And considering the admission is free, a total no brainer. Tons of info about submarines, trained maritime fauna and research.
I wished i had more time. My best friend and my family loved it.
Loved it!!!! Free museum, takes about 2 hours. There is a DSRV in the parking lot.
The exhibits were pretty cool. I think the best was the new one "Marine Mammals, Super Searchers." It was very interesting to learn about how dolphins and sea lions can find intruders in the water as well as mines etc.
The only thing I didn't like was when we entered, the man working there told me I couldn't bring my purse into the building and said "Didn't you see the signs on the doors?" I had to exit and leave my purse in the car, and I didn't see any signs saying I couldn't bring a purse in (signs saying no backpacks, but not anything about purses). Because I was very uncomfortable leaving my purse in the car, I felt like we rushed through the museum so we could get back out to the car.
One of the truly unique museums in the United States. It has two of the most important deep-diving submarines in history. COVID has robbed it as well as many other museums, of continuing improvements, however it's highly dedicated staff, will never give in. Like the Phoenix, it will rise to new heights in the future.
Great museum. Exhibits were very informative and organized well. Friendly staff & volunteers. Lots of parking.
Incredible, informative, and sobering! It's another world, a subculture of warfare dating back to the civil war. Fascinating and frightening. Well worth the time.!!!!
This museum was great! We were greeted by a wonderful host into a clean and orderly information area. The museum was well laid out with lots of places to go to avoid other patrons. Some exhibits had more information than was needed and could be overwhelming (torpedo exhibit and the ocean exhibit) but there was enough fun information for all ages to keep everyone occupied. I would definitely recommend this museum to everyone!
Highly recommend for those interested in US Naval Submarine history.
Great place to go on a hot afternoon. We learned a lot. I particularly enjoyed the exhibit about the sea lions and dolphins being trained for the navy. The gift shop is cute and very reasonably priced.
Awsome find . gives you a better understanding of what its like . i enjoyed it very much
Great museum with tons of informative exhibits!
My kids absolutely love coming here. I don't know where to start, honestly. It is admission by donation and run by vets who are a lot of fun to talk to. There are lots of hands on exhibits exploring everything Navy and it is awesome. I honestly thought my son wasn't paying attention to any of it until I asked him a question and he ran back more to me than I had absorbed. Too bad it's not open right now in COVID. Can't wait to take the kids back again.
Features significant historical props and information that create an environment rich with both novel curiosity and a sense of adventure from one exhibit to the next. The tour guides are extensively interactive, and there is very little that requires much explanation besides that which can be seen. Also, the gift shop is miraculously not overpriced (!!!) and features a variety of wonderful and appealing items to take for souvenirs.
Well done displays with lots of history and historical objects
Great for history, submarine, and just plain buffs.
A really great small Museum with free admission. We found ourselves here on a rainy spring break, and this Museum had something for everyone. A fascinating journey through our undersea evolution, all the way through to modern safety techniques and using animal helpers for a rescue missions. We loved the Interactive sub model!
This is a fairly interesting museum with a wide variety of exhibits related to undersea navigation. The volunteers are very friendly and motivated to make visitors' experiences interesting. There are a number of real submersibles at the museum, and the museum would be spectacular if visitors could tour them.
Such a cool museum. All of the workers are so sweet and informative. They have wheelchairs to loan. 10/10 would recommend to family and friends!
My kids had a very fun time and enjoyed playing in the submarine control area.
Great set up. It has exhibitions on the creation of submarines dating back to the invention of the use of animal bladders, a US submarine sinking event, mines/torpedoes, nuclear warfare, the environment and impact of submarines on wildlife, underwater rescue vehicles, and a really cool submarine interactive play area for kids including a movable periscope with a camera pointing at the parking area.
Be aware - no bags of any kind (diaper bags and kid snack bags included) allowed inside.
It’s free too.
Totally wasn't expecting this caliber of a museum in this remote of a location. The exhibits are fantastic and the building & displays are impeccable. Free admission, open daily at 10, really a great stop if you are in the area, and worth the drive if you are not. I was taken aback by the history, artifacts and the education of submarine development, application, and underwater rescue that are delved into here.
Highly recommended. Small and nice museum. Better to combine with other attractions if you drive from Seattle
It's a non profit museum that needs your donations to improve itself. For entertainment there isn't much beyond real displays and a bunch of reading, but their non profit status should not take away what's here. There's a ton of history to read and watch about which will keep any fan of the sea and military history entertained follow the path and you will enjoy yourself.
This is one of the coolest museums I have ever been to. Lots of interesting facts and exhibits about submarines. My son and I went with our Scout troop, we had a blast learning about submarines. I can't wait to take my other two kids and see how much fun they'll have too.
Amazingly well-designed and detailed for a free museum. We easily spent around two hours there. I was most impressed by the variety of topics addressed, from the history of early diving, to ocean currents and marine life, to the expected array of modern submarines. This is one museum I wouldn't mind seeing again.
It was a lot of fun and there were things to see and play with for many ages. My 8, 6 and 1 year olds had a blast!
For a unique opportunity to see under sea Naval history visit the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum. As a previous Navy enlisted man I saw history with equipment that I both used when on active duty and saw while in service. I appreciated the layout of the museum as open and easy to navigate. There are restrooms here and were clean and well maintained. There is also a gift shop with many options to include clothing and small gifts. I highly recommend anyone interested in Naval history visit the museum and learn more about what goes on under the ocean surface every day. I plan to visit again.
If your kid is interested in what we used to call technology they will love it.
The best Navy museum I've been to on the west coast. Although I was a Surface Sailor, the exhibits of mammal use of mine detection, the 1890's torpedo and undersea warfare through the last 100 years was a really nice experience..
Absolutely fascinating museum. Wish I could have spent even more time with all the many wonderful exhibits. I’ll definitely come back at my next opportunity. Worth the drive if you live in Seattle or the Eastside (take a ferry and enjoy spending several hours here, then peruse the nearby towns). The docents at the front were very nice and knowledgeable.
Lots of well presented information. Some interactive exhibits, and only dissapointment is the toilets (although clean) coulda been Submarine themed :)
We haven't been to this museum in a long time. All exhibits have been updated and look very modern. I'm personally fascinated with the torpedo technology. The addition of ocean biology is great too. And it's all FREE!
I was heading south on HWY 3 when I saw the sign for Naval Underwater Museum. I stopped on the way back from trip to Bethel. There two interesting under water vehicles out in the parking lot and I thought the museum would be interesting but sadly it was closed. They are not open on Tuesdays.
I've lived in the area for over 20 years and never been to the museum. I thoroughly enjoyed this visit and will probably come back with out of town visitors.
Not quite as techically rich as I would like, but a great introduction to the undersea world. The price is right (free); plan on spending some time to cover the extensive displays. Gift shop has good merchandise, less tacky than some other museums I've seen, and reasonably priced.
Great experience had by the whole family learned a lot in a short time
One of the coolest and most unique museums you will ever go to, this place has so many cool artifacts. this museum is located out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of some beautiful country, the drive out here will Delight you. many of the volunteers in the museum are former submariners who are filled with knowledge
Self paced walking tour. Provides some interesting history.
Great place for families - interactive and informative.
Pretty cool. It's free! There's a lot to learn and read, perhaps hours worth of reading. We didn't want to spend that long, so kinda just breezed through and checked it out a bit. The back room is the coolest ;)
Great Museum on unique subject.
This was fun, kids really enjoyed two hours there. Most of all the staff/volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely wanted you to have a good time.
The Naval Undersea Museum is a gem! It's a modern, lightfilled space with interesting, educational exhibits. There are hands on exhibits that kids like. Exhibits do change, so it's worth visiting more than once. The docents are helpful whether you're a first time visitor or a regular. We love the Navy Band Northwest concerts that occur here regularly. There is no charge for either the museum or concerts!
Even the gift shop is worth checking out thoroughly as you can find unusual books and items that may suit the hard-to-shop-for person on your list.
Nice staff and educational fun. The displays change so you can go every few months and experience something new. The kids love it and it is free so on rainy days with nothing to do this is on the list!
Very interesting and thorough museum about submarines and submarine rescue. Knowledgeable docents. It's free and worth taking time to visit.
I love this place. It's full of cool stuff and its layout is great. Clean and professional. The auditorium is great for public events. You don't need a military identification card to gain access either.
This is a great museum - so much to see and very informative. Lots of hands on exhibits too
Very informative museum. They have things that would interest the pure Navy person. They have a history of diving, submarines, missiles, war under water, and more. I loved the dolphins and sea lions exhibit. This exhibit talks about how the animals help find land mines from prior wars, spot intruders, and help find wrecks. It has about how how people can go under the water and not suffer the bends as well as my other favorite part which was the sea lab. Really cool museum!
Lots of examples of naval equipment and history. Warfare tools displayed included early wooden submarines, torpedoes, and rescue stories.
A smaller museum, but densely packed. Very unique artifacts and stories from across the Navy. An absolutely must for anyone interested in maritime or military history. There are even a few hands on exhibits that give you a peek into the world of undersea operations.
Good museum ... not very large, so doesn't touch on all areas of interest. Traces the history of submarines and submarine warfare. Development of torpedoes is a major topic--quite informative for those interested. Outside are a couple of deep-sea research submersibles. And admission is free. All on one level (now).
Free, wonderful educational Navy day!
Great Museum
There is a ton of written displays so if you like to take your time and read everything you will be here for a little while.
Great place to bring the family, free and we all learned a lot while having a good time.
Their is so much submarine history in those 4 walls!! I could not see or read all the information in just one visit. There are volunteers that share the history of the submarines with people as you first come in and throughout museum.
Well worth visiting over and over!
Great experience. So much information.
I just went there for the third time today. Took another close friend. He likes it and said he could spend a whole day there. It's free, so I figure just to visit as much as possible. I got my step dad a poster, he has been there before, and he really likes submarines. Who doesn't like submarines? And the people who work under the sea especially in combat roles deserve to be honored, respected, and appreciated.
People were really nice and helpful I enjoyed my visit to the under sea museum
Was there when it was closed, but it was still very cool just looking st the stuff outside in the parking lot!
Fun little free museum to learn about some US Naval Submarine history and sea life. My kids and my niece and nephews (ages 4-10) had a blast! Would totally go again (and plan to).
Every time I go I learn something new!
Free and extremely interesting museum about the history of undersea exploration and warfare. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There is a tremendous amount of information to absorb in this museum. I think it's a great idea for the whole family.
Awesome museum with lots of information and history about the US Navy Submarine program.
Great museum, the kids had fun and learned a lot. Really good exhibits, cutaways, models, etc.
It's free admission, very friendly staff, VERY WELL done presentations graphically and historically. Well laid out for walking through.
Great place to take your kids! My favorite part was learning about the Navy dolphins & sea lions!
This is a really interesting museum (and free). Would highly recommend stopping if you are in the area. In addition to the (expected) subs, they have very cool exhibits on history of mines, torpedoes, diving, and dolphins.
Excellent displays and very friendly and informative people to answer any questions. Highly recommended.
Informative and interactive walkthrough of military submersibles and naval explosives, all for free. Great for a few hours out with the family.
We were very glad that we visited this museum while visiting our Navy son stationed in Bremerton. We spent about 2 hours in the museum and found it very interesting and educational. No admission charge but we left a donation.
Very nice museum featuring many exhibits regarding undersea exploration and warfare. Closed on Tuesdays. Open all other days. Open to the public. Museum has a well-stocked gift shop. If in the Silverdale/Poulsbo area, it's worth a visit. Plan for an hour. Free parking available. There are outdoor displays as well including a submarine sail. Enjoy.
Have never been before....It was absolutely outstanding ! I will visit again , staff was friendly and very helpful, very nice content and well done displays . Will go see the Navy band in August.
Great place if you are interested in Naval underwater history. And it is free.
Great place to spend an hour near the Silverdale area. The kids loved it. We picked up quite a few interesting facts and stories.
Great free museum of actual torpedoes, submarine technology and the human side of a submariners life. Triumphs and tragedies well told with very nicely done and maintained exhibits and film clips. The older history of undersea warfare is particularly interesting and they have some unique exhibits of artifacts. Place is large. I've been back 3 times and haven't seen everything. Kinda off the beaten track, so eat lunch before you go- there's no food there or even close. There are huge history making submersibles in the parking lot. Don't miss them.
Wow! So much information. Very worthwhile 👍 …
This is an excellent museum! If the average person were to take the time to read and look at all the exhibits in detail, it would take several visits for them on see everything this place has to offer. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. Definitely worth the time and effort to go and see.
-EDIT-
We, my family and I, love this museum. My wife and I had visited it in the summer of 2015 and ear marked it on the map as "a must see again place" if we were back in the area. Now, in the summer of 2019, we have come back to the Washington coastal area with our son in tow and are making another visit. Lots of positive changes have occurred over the few years since I've first seen the museum, mainly more details have been added to the main exhibits. Wonderful way to see the history of underwater exploration and defense, something for all ages to see and interact with, and, best of all, free to the public.
Lived in Seattle most of my life and didn't know this museum existed. Great history, great exhibits. If you get a chance don't miss this museum.
Interesting collection of history of underwater exploration, both in peace and war. A number of submarines, even full size torpedo tubes (and torpedoes). Nicely done, if you're in the area - I'd recommend visiting. It's free and a quick walk-through.
Just don't take the wrong turn and wind up at a Naval base... they have machine guns for unwelcome visitors ;)
This is a free museum that we took all too long to visit. It would be a great place to bring kids as they have something for everyone including "hands on" exhibits. The staff are volunteers and happy to answer any questions.
Only had an hour but you would need 4 to go over everything. This place is awesome with a ton of very interesting info about subs and evolution of diving. Has a great kids section as well.
They have a wide variety of exhibits detailing interesting naval technologies over the years. From dive suits to torpedoes to a sub's bridge, and then some, and my kids enjoyed all of it.
Their kids' science day setup, on the other hand...seemed disorganized, cramped, and set up in a way where there wasn't sufficient time or space for the kids to actually complete all of the activities in two hours... Far beyond the attention span of my kids. The people manning the various kids' stations were visibly frazzled by the whole thing, too.
We really enjoyed checking out this museum. Tons of naval artifacts, thoughtfully laid out. The staff were very nice, the kids area kept my son thoroughly entertained.
If you are passing by or want a little side trip, this is a great opportunity. We loved it. Even the teenager enjoyed the exibts
Had to drag our 3 year old and 7 year old boys away from many of these exhibits. That speaks for itself.
A wonderful museum that helps tell the history of the United States Navy's undersea operations. Lots of colorful exhibits and a fun play area for children. There are exhibits both inside and outside the museum.
Our visit fell on one of the Saturdays when they have STEM experiments. We enjoyed learning a little more about the Navy and got to see great images and actually pieces to a submarine. I think we will be going there again for sure.
Wonderful, informative museum of our underseas naval history. Volunteers are helpful and knowledgeable.
Really informative and really cool items on display. I particularly enjoyed learning about how the Navy has trained sea lions and dolphins to assist them in rescues and other underwater endeavors.
Very informative and the volunteer staff were great.
Worth the tour
If you are visiting near Bainbridge Island or Poulsbo, you should definitely go here! The exhibits are thoughtful, professional, and well designed. Kudos to the exhibit manager. I enjoyed the huge submarine tail at the entrance and the working periscope inside the submarine control room. I think the torpedo collection there is one of the largest in the country! There's scientific Naval submersibles in the parking lot. The naval animal exhibit was particularly interesting because I hadn't ever heard of Navy trained dolphins who helped divers discover and explore different areas of the ocean.
Very interesting. Highly recommend this museum for all ages. Many updated exhibits since my previous visit.
I have a slightly biased view as a former submariner, however, it pays a good deal of attention to the history of this type of warfare that normally goes unmentioned. One of the opening exhibits pays ommage to the Thresher incident. For kids/learning, they have a portion of the exhibit that goes over a lot of the science behind submarines. There is also a control room, a large variety of torpedoes used over the years, an area for kids to read books and play dress up. The marine mammal exhibit is an interesting look at their use in the Puget Sound that is a very different take from what you get in an aquarium. Very excited for the future NR-1 control room exhibit.
This place is super awesome 👌. Sadly we had to leave as they closed for the day. Very informative and educational. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. …
Very interesting and informative.
One of the best naval museums I've visited.
It was interesting. I am glad I went.
This museum is worth a stop if you are near Poulsbo or road tripping through Kitsap County. Free admission and you will learn about our US military defense system in place here in the Puget Sound region. Impressive displays about marine animal help in rescue missions and intensive deep sea research are worth stopping here, even if you have reservations about military defense spending. Come learn what your tax dollars are funding.
Very nice museum with friendly, knowledgeable staff.
Very informative. Exhibits are well organized for easy viewing. Admissions is free. If you go, sign the guest book and leave a donation!
This place is amazing. I love submarines and ever since I read the book "Hunt for Red October" I was hooked. You actually can buy this book in the museum store. ;-)
Highlight for me was to see the diffrent torpedos and the control room of a submarine. It is definetly worth visiting here and admission is free.
It was very interesting listening to sounds orcas, humpback whales, how sea lions are trained to be security underwater.
Very small museum. One hour at most. Could be such more. The few artifacts displayed are unique and interesting.
Great museum! Lots to see, multiple aspects of undersea projects and history. Expected to spent an hour, but ended up spending over two hours here.
Great museum, involved a lot more ocean science than I was expecting, I spent almost 4 hours there and wished I could have stayed longer but they closed at 4pm.
For the information and volunteers all for free. Id give ya 6 stars if I could. Ive been in 48 states in our country in the last 6 years and you dont find this often.. Thank you.
Had a wonderful time here visiting the US Naval undersea Museum . Excellent display of exhibits great staff and volunteers that will give you a tour of this museum and you’ll enjoy it it’s a great place
A piece of history seldom seen. Somethimg we should all know about. The risks and the challenges. The evolution of extreme engineering and people who risk their lives for all of us and our way of life. The hidden horror of a war being fought a glimpse into a war that could be.
There are a number if interesting exhibits. Unfortunately there where a number of the interactive exhibits that were under repair. But the museum is free. Definitely worth a visit.
Very informative, the exhibit s were very nice. Great collection of armaments both modern and historical.

Great! Interested in submarines, the ocean, or science, this is a great place to visit.
What a great experience for both me and my kids!!! My only regret was that we came in with only 45 minutes till closing. One day we'll come back and spend more time.
A short ride from Seattle, we were able to visit and take in the surrounding area. The museum is great with lots of artifacts that tell the stories of the US Navy's underwater combat programs.
Nice little museum. We went to many ceremonies here and had little time to see the displays. Lots to see in a small space
Free entry and tons of history you don't rely get anywhere else. The volunteer staff is great!
Professionally run and designed. There's a lot of great info here that you may otherwise never discover. They also have a periscope hooked up to a rooftop camera!
Very interesting.
Helpful staff
Definitely worth stopping by nice displays and helpful staff, admission is free
This place was really cool do you like history. This is a good history lesson. The trinkets at the gift store were very reasonable unlike other gift stores

Children and adults can enjoy this. A lot of information for both and lots of hands on things. Really a fantastic time and the scenery around is fantastic as well.
From evolution of underwater weaponry to submersibles and Dolphins employed by USN to search & rescue- quite the interesting learning experience!
After reading so many books about subs it was very enjoyable to see the actual hardware especially the various torpedoes and their inner workings. I now understand how mines work and how they are deployed.
This place is HUGE! Totally worth the stop if you're in the area. It's FREE and there is so much information. Well curated, i would love to see more events held in that space.
Everyone should visit if they have the chance. Obviously a well thought out and funded museum... it houses some of the US's most important history... for free.
This exhibit/museum was wonderful. I could have easily spent all afternoon 3-4 hours learning about naval history.
Just perfect little museum near a naval base. Very friendly volunteer staff. Perfect spot to spent a few hours reading the history of undersea naval warfare

Would go again if I had the time.
This was like my 4th time going to the Naval Undersea Museum and i absolutely loved it. You always learn something new and interesting every time you go.
It's a great place for a day of learning and exploring. There was a lot of redundancy in the museum that got boring after a while.
Admission is free and the exhibits are impressively detailed. I especially enjoyed the torpedo and nuclear warhead (MIRV) exhibits.
Excellent and enjoyable. So much knowledge about submarines and marine life. More than just a military museum.
