Reviews of Tacoma Art Museum
TAM is pretty cool! Admission is free for anyone under 18, and the exhibits are often educational. The Kinsey collection specifically was great, and the diversity efforts are really good. The collections are overall very tasteful and enjoyable. It’s proximity to the glass museum is also very nice.
This is an amazing museum full of creative and inspirational works of art. My photos honestly can't do it justice. There are so many different kinds of art, in all sorts of shape and form, including oil paintings, abstract paintings, bronze sculptures, and more. Overall, it's a good educational experience.
Great kind and knowledgeable staff. Clean and well laid out modern style museum. Went on Sunday and it wasn't busy at all, which was nice. Cute gift shop and great coffee.
I took my assisted living and skilled nursing residents to visit the Tacoma Art Museum for the first time yesterday. Sunny Ra and her team were amazing. The museum is wheelchair and walker accessible, which was important for our group. Sunny met us at the entrance and escorted us into the Museum. We enjoyed wandering around and see the exhibits. We recommend the "On Native Land" collection which was amazing. We would like to thank everyone that made this such an a fun trip.
Good exhibits. The Chihuly room was the coolest display of his art, well lit and displayed!!
I checked out free admission from my local library-- free for up to 2 adults and children!
There are several collections beautifully displayed. Some unique artists are represented. It's free to the public on Thursdays! This is a kid friendly space and includes an open art studio where anyone can try their own habd at making art. There is also a small Cafe. The views of the city upstairs are lovely. And there is paid parking below the museum with a lower level entrance as well. There were not many people when I visited.
Visited on a Thursday evening and was free! Interesting selection of artworks including lots of pacific north west artists I was not familiar with. Lovely gallery space
It's an amazing spot with amazing art! The only thing we didn't love is how closely the employees follow and watch you because after awhile it kinda makes you feel like youre doing something wrong, but I do get it they are protecting the works of art.
My favorite museum in the area! The Kinsey Collection is one of my favorite exhibits I’ve ever seen. Such a thought provoking and gut wrenching array of art. Thankful to have visited
Amazing art, relaxing place to be. Looking forward to my next visit when all the exhibits are open after their renovation.
Immersive art space. Great exhibitions and an excellent collection of local artists. Loved the glass art.
Beautiful museum. The staff are nice and helpful. I like the space where kids can create drawings.
A fun museum with a little bit of everything for every art lover. Free on Thursdays! Check out the event calendar for anything extra on their website too!
We just went to the Gift Shop. The building is really nice inside. The air conditioning felt great on a hot day
What a cute place to hang out and unwind! Love the vibe of this hip art museum. If you happen to be in the area, pay a visit! It’s worth it. Parking is not free.
I really enjoyed TAM and supporting the Hill Top Artists. We have some amazing talent in T Town.
A decent art museum which is fairly priced. It's nothing huge, but there are definitely some good exhibits there. Some of the glass work is beautiful. Staff was kind, and there's a nice area near the entrance where you can do some crafting. Worth a stop if you're around the area, but don't go expecting to have your mind blown away.
Love going here. The art is beautifully curated but what my family loves most is the artist room. My girls love to get inspired walking the gallery and then turn that inspiration into their own art!
PS did you know you can get free tickets to the museum through the library?!
The art there was such a joy to experience. The different styles, textures and mediums truly brought out the uniqueness in each artist. One of the pieces by Ava Cosey, was delightful. It consisted of a elegant women whose golden shackles were broken. Draped in a green dress that was adorned by, what I educatedly guessed, inventions of Afro Americans. With a message up top reading “We did not come to America because it was a better place, we made it a better place”. How powerful I thought, these inventions are part of what made America. That even though my ancestors did not come here by choice, we have made it our home. That we are not bound by the shackles society or the world wants to put us in. Show
Me how you have not benefitted from us ….If it continues to be my home that’s another post. Another framed art was a couple who seemed to be dancing to music, were embraced in each other’s arms. Without grabbing her obscenely, he held onto her tightly…lovingly. It brought me memories of my parents when they used to dance in front of me. While I enjoyed seeing art from the Kinsey Collection, I was annoyed and unpleased. From fast pace shoe shuffles to the stares and constant following, I was distracted by the constant reminder of the employees who work there. While I know it’s their job but to be blatantly in my face made my anxiety awaken and my ability to focus very difficult. I did not feel welcomed nor could I enjoy the collection thoroughly. Compared to the last time (a few years back) I am surprised this happened especially during a collection involving the history of Afro Americans hence I’m Afro American! I also later learned that my friend, who is too Afro American also felt the same way. We are insulted. We know that the Kinsey family would be appalled to
Learn of such doings.
Fantastic experience at the Tacoma Art Museum and If there is inclement weather or you are looking to fill some time this is an excellent choice. I'd say to allot between 1.5-2.5 hours (depending how long you view/stare at each piece of art). Exhibit were well placed and easy to navigate. They maintain adequate genre/art styles that keep you engaged from each exhibit focus.
Beautiful facility and a great place to visit. Kinsey exhibit was interesting. It's free on Thursdays 5-8pm
Great little museum with interesting art.
Features local artists
Really such a gorgeous museum. Loved every inch of the place, from the semi intractable pendant displays to the varying themed art locations, from Latino to Native American to Japanese. I really can't wait for my next chance to visit
Heard about checking out family passes to the museums through the library. Did just that. My family of five checked out TAM today. Was fun, different and out of the norm for my family. My kids even enjoyed themselves. We walked through the different galleries which were around 7. Art was very nicely displayed and lit with info on each piece. The museum was very clean, quiet and enjoyable. Staff was nice and on hand to answer any questions. There were two classroom spaces, a library, cafe and art room. My kids loved the art room. I think looking at all the art brought out their artsy side. I highly recommend checking out the museum. I would definitely check out a pass again to see future exhibits. Not sure that I would pay to get in. Photos: darlenestewartphotography
Amazing artwork and a tranquil atmosphere. I eagerly anticipate my next visit when all the displays have reopened following
Beautiful selection of arts. They have some permanent display and rotate them occasionally. But they also have some fun exhibits from famous and important artists as well. Entrance is a bit steep but it's all worth it. If you're associated with the University of Washington (student of staff) you can come in free anytime you want. There's also a small library upstairs a nice hangout place worth checking out. One of my favorite places in Tacoma.
TAM offers free lockers, and their exhibition is local and global at the same time. Don't forget to enjoy the Mt Rainier view with Museum of Glass on the patio of the 2nd floor. Currently they offer Mexican photography and film exhibition with free film screening and thus admission to the museum. Please take advantage of this awesome programming.
A must-visit museum if you're visiting Tacoma or as a planned trip! We had a great time at TAM. The location was easy to navigate to and parking was very easy and handy.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful with the museum implementing COVID procedures.
The exhibits and artwork are simply fantastic. Highly recommended!!!
My first time here and I loved it! Everyone was friendly. Thursday night from 5pm-8pm is FREE!!
Don’t want to ruin by putting all the pics on here. If you’re an Evergreen State College Student the $15 admission is waved. It’s an amazing experience. I especially liked the wood set block prints, the mixed media giant glass cubes and these cool bags of water that need a fish!!!
They’re setting up a new exhibit.
Went to see the French Impressionism exhibit. Found it to be well done with beautiful paintings by Monet, Renoir, Hassam and others. Exhibit has been extended to Jan. 19, 2020. Also enjoyed Chihuly exhibit. There is a small convenient cafe there also.
I appreciate TAM. I went recently to visit the Kinsey Collection and truly enjoyed the exhibit. They definitely have collected artifacts often unseen or not known about regarding the African American experience. Here are a few images from the collection. You can also view the collection digitally, but to go in person is a great experience.
I really enjoyed the experience. While the overall size of the museum was pretty small, they featured a large variety of pieces with different styles and techniques to the paintings.
There is also a lot of overlap with the museum of glass, so if you liked one, then you should check the other out as well.
Such a great museum with a lot of great exhibits on native art, glass art, and amazing paintings. Loved the areas to give our views and answer questions about the exhibit. Seeing what others saw made the experience much more rich and fulfilling, to be able to give your voice. A lot of Asian American art, like from the Japanese internment camps that are not talked about. So much northwest art that had something to say.
Very interesting artworks and special exhibits can be exciting. Easy to park, not so many people. Great place to visit on the weekend with family and friends. Free on Thursday afternoon!
The TAM is a nice facility with a variety of art displays
NOTICE: Be sure you park in a TAM marked spot. If you park in a 100 series space and don't have a Republic space receipt it's a $40.00 fine rather than $2.00 fee. IT'S THE SAME PARKING LOT!!
The art museum is easy to find, access, and exit. As of November 2019 there were three large displays. The first is French impressionists with nearly 50 works including about a dozen famous names. Next to it is the Chihully glass exhibit. Nearest to the front desk is an impressive display of bronze castings from the 1850-1940 timeframe.
The next large display is works by immigrants who made the northwest their home. Lastly is a large display of works by Native American artists. Well done.
If you found this review to be helpful please consider giving it a thumbs-up.
They have beautiful exhibits. Take your time to see all of the details of each piece. The staff is super friendly. I am already looking forward to returning.
What a fun museum! Filled with beautiful exhibits, friendly staff, and fun locals! A great place for photography too! Just don't use flash!
Great day to go, lots of parking and very few people there so easy to see all the exhibits. Chihuly exhibit amazing! The cafe has yummy food and staff is not stressed with mobs of people.
The TAM was one of the top 5 amazing museums, I have only consisted once, but have been to many others in Washington state. I will say this experience was very wonderful
Our City of Lakewood had a retreat and Travis, one of TAM'S artists/employee facilitated our event! How kind your staff is! We enjoyed him so much! Can't wait to visit TAM and Travis!!!
It's a great midsized museum. I love all the glass exhibits. The display of Debra Moore's work was hauntingly beautiful.
Looks like it would’ve been a good time but we showed up during business hours only to find that they closed early. Very disappointing :/
We had a nice time. It was great to see young children learning about art. It brightened my day!
They have some great exhibits right now. Bronzes, glass, Native portraiture... northwest murals. I'm definitely going to go back and see some other exhibits.
Even though the museum is not big, I really enjoyed the art work exhibited here. And it is free third Thursday 5pm till 8pm
Went to the Kinsey Collection ribbon cutting ✂️. What an amazing exhibition. History and Art collide for an education we never received in public schools.
A must see! And eTc (as always) collaborating to make merchandise that everyone will want to take home.
It was a very nice museum with a large variety. Can not tell a lie, my fiancée and I were a little creeped out that we were being followed around by a museum employee. Every time we went to a new exhibit the employee would be watching. I understand it's a fine art gallery but it was a little excessive. We liked the south wing piece with multiple layers.
Excellent exhibits! Can't wait to go back.
Better than the Seattle Art Museum in my opinion. This place is small, but they have a well curated collection. Really enjoyed the glass exhibit - will be going back in the spring - fall to see the outdoor Chihuly installation (they put it away for the winter). The rotating exhibit we was was great too called 30Americans - very thought provoking.
We are not much of a artsy type of family. However walking into the museum it was big clean and spacious. They had some beautiful art on the walls, sculptures throughout the building, a little area where you could create your own art, and wonderful employees or volunteers that made great conversation!
We absolutely love the Tacoma Art Museum. Great for kids and adults. They always have an interesting activity for our kiddos and great exhibits for adults!!
Gotta love TAM. Went on the free Thursday promotion that they do every week. They always have a good variety every time i visit, though there are some permanent pieces. Its also very easy to get to the museum, parking is inexpensive and easy to use, which is rare for Tacoma.
Great place to visit!
Today 7/22/21 they have free entry from 5-8pm
Outstanding collections of new and old. Glass art is gorgeous. Dale Chihuly's works are prominently displayed.
A small but beautifully laid out Art Museum. I really enjoyed the art pieces from Native American, modern, and glass art. It's a great museum, very calm and quite.
Nice museum, bigger than expected... Free entrance first weekend of every month
Pretty small but nice. It has a lot of native American art and blown-glass art. At least those were the galleries that were open. My issues was the parking lot. As a person out-of-state. I got super confuse where the parking lots was. It's very hidden and I ended up parking on the streets. But overall it's was pretty.
I really enjoy visiting the museum and appreciate the hospitality from everyone who works to keep everything running. I always enjoy my visits but I was a bit disappointed that a part of the museum was closed off between exibits and didn't get the opportunity to see more without a warning that that there were incomplete sections. I can't wait to see the future exhibits.
Hated trying to figure out pay to park in their museum parking lot, but the museum has a lot of exhibits. If you are going to pay to get in, why charge an additional amount to park. Just put it in one ticket instead of essentially paying twice to visit the museum...
Hey it's a museum of glass with a theater and a cafe and great views of downtown Tacoma and also really good glass art
With rotating art displays there is always something new and wonderful to behold. Every month on the third Thursday entrance is free from 5-8pm, and every Thursday from 5-8 is free for students. On 3rd Thursdays take a stroll next door to the Washington State History Museum and The Museum of Glass which are also free from 5-8pm. They have many discounts for seniors, military, students and family packs. There is a parking lot behind the building. #LetsGuide #LocalGuides #LeeHeath
This Art museum is truly fantastic. Beautiful glass sculptures and ORIGINAL Monet masterpieces.
Great place to bring the family.
Many interesting displays to enjoy!
On 11/18/22 the Tacoma Art Museum Board Members voted "NO" on recognizing the request of their employees to become Union. The employees who initiated a Union vote are looking to have wall-to-wall Union Representation for all workers at the museum. Unions throughout Western Washington are supporting their decision And stand with these workers who are striving for a better future! We asked the board to reconsider their decision for the betterment of the museum and the workers that make that museum one of the greatest attractions in Tacoma. Hey board members, don't forget... "Tacoma is a Union town!"
This is a beautiful place to visit so much to see in beautiful downtown also known as the city of destiny
Kinsey collection was really interesting and simply made me think about who I am and how I fit in the world. Looking forward to more additional shows there. We did the free Thursday evening event. Paid for parking below. It was pretty busy FYI. Have fun and get ready to learn a ton! I would have loved an audio version option instead of having to read everything.
Great experience at the TAM today. Having a showing of tribal artists work, as well as older pieces with the stories of the scene told from tribal history. This to me is a really nice touch. There was an original piece by Charles Russell, of whom I've been a fan for decades. I have a print of this particular piece. I never dreamed I'd actually be able to see the original. Highlight of my year.
They also have great Chihuly glass art, as well as a great modern gallery. Tacoma takes a lot of hits, but we have a world class museum. Stop in.
Amazing!!! Fashion is Art was a dream!! Here I'm Showcasing Dawnamatrix Latex Fashion put on by Fashion District NW 🖤 …
Bigger than I thought . Nice E. Hopper on exhibit!
The Museum is remodeled and beautiful on the outside and inside. They have a small cafe inside and gift shop.
Small but a variety of things to see, despite 2 galleries being under construction for new installations
This place is spectacular. Nicely curated exhibit and the design of the building is very interesting. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
It's quite a place. Lots of glass art, and cool items. Most of our time was in the Kinsey Exhibit, which was eye opening and deeply moving, about our US history of slavery and Jim Crow. I'm so impressed with the brilliant African Americans who have contributed so much to our culture and art history.
Super pretty architecture and art inside and out. Love the customer service and it's free every Thursday evenings for all adults. Beautiful glass art and more!!!
Nice, weren't with my daughter's school for a field trip so it was a little wild
Today was my first time visiting TAM. My mom was in town visiting and she loves museums. Glad we went. Loved the exhibits. The Kinsey Exhibit was our favorite. Friendly staff as well. Please visit, if you haven’t already.
The best of the museums I've visited in Tacoma
It's a lovely museum. Open, currently, Friday-Sunday.
Great museum with easily some of the friendliest staff you'll find.
We had a great time
.. love it
Decent place. Not very busy on the weekend.
I went on a closed day to donate blood. It is a lovely space.
Went during the free admission Thursday night event and was surprised by the amount of work! Hope it will be expanding to add more work but it was a good visit.
Family visited this museum during the Smithsonian museum day. We had a great visit. Some of the exhibits switch out so it pays to check ahead if there is a particular exhibit that you want to see.
It had been a long long time since I had been to the museum and it was well worth it. It was nice and quiet so me and my date for the day had the best opportunity to enjoy the art and each others company (we were told that this was the best time of the week, Sunday in the morning, to go and they were right!) and I was able to get both of us a nice little gift for myself and her to enjoy the memories we created from the gift shop. If you haven't been, make time to visit!
Visiting the Kinsey African American Art exhibition was a wonderful first date! Alot to see but not too much for some 3 plus hours. "Filled up", will have to return to see the other exhibits.
Fantastic exhibits and world class architecture. The layout of this building is very fun to explore. They have summer classes for kids which are really fun and engaging for our young aspiring artists. My daughter loved it and came home with beautiful glass sculptures. Its a wonderful experience.
I went for one of their free Thursday evening events and had a really good time. It was easy and inexpensive to park in their lot, quick to check in, and then the exhibits were incredible. Absolutely blown away by the visiting Impressionist exhibit and the opportunity to see Monet and Renoir works, amongst others, up close and in person. The Simpson exhibit was really fun to see as well.
First time there since COVID-19. Brought kids and out of town family. I continue to love it. Well interpretted. Also, kids under 18 now free. Cafe for drinks very fairly priced.
They were preparing for an event, so although we received free admission, the Kinsey Exhibit was not accessible. It was still a wonderful visit to TAM. It was a hot day in Tacoma and the museum was the perfect spot to stay cool.
The museum itself is nice but nothing really anything special. Admission for a non-member adult is $18, which seems steep for what it is. I went for an Impressionist exhibit (which was small-to-moderately sized, about 50 pieces) and saw the rest of the museum (which is mostly glass and indigenous art) in <90 minutes. FYI: parking can be found below the building and is $2/hour prepaid at a machine.
Great new show on hilltop artists. Remember third Thursday s are free. Always great shows and events
Affordable and great art pieces for viewing
This is one beautiful museum my daughter and I was just there a few weeks ago for one of their events and it was great. I also enjoyed looking around at all the beautiful art work while we waited for some of the performances. It's always great to see beauty in so many different ways.
I love the art exhibits and seeing the art. They have different styles of art and each of the exhibits touch on a important current event in America. Great place for an outing.
They just keep getting better and better.
Recently expanded, another new wing with sculptures. Museum Cafe is worth a stop, and the gift shop is small but has some unique high-end and low-end gifts.
My favorite part is always the artists Workshop where we can make our own art! The watercolor piece I made I left on the big wall to share.
Check out the awesome views of the city from the second floor.
You'll need a minimum of 1 hour to see everything and that's at a good pace. Slow down and enjoy it and take 2 hours. A very quiet and peaceful place for young and old.
This is a Tacoma gem for sure!
Interesting and engaging architecture lays out exhibits in an accessible, logical yet creative manner. The natural light also contributes to the art displayed. Love the free open art studio available to the public! What a great way to get visitors to realize we are all talented. Loved our day spent here.
Nice way to spend a cloudy Sunday afternoon surrounded by eye candy.
I always enjoy Tacoma's art museum. Today I had some time to fill and enjoyed the Naturalist and the Trickster. There is a huge mural to be colored by people visiting the museum on Thursday nights and some Saturdays. If you can get there to enjoy this exhibit I encourage you to. As always the staff and volunteers are ready to answer questions and update you on future events.
Really cool to see the Kinsey collection of African American art!
Great place to visit. It was wonderful to be allowed free admission because of being in the military. Thanks for providing us that benefit.
We really enjoyed seeing all the exhibits. Wish there were more items to view. That's the only reason for not giving 5 stars, because it took us less than an hour to view everything. There were a few areas that were closed to viewing.
We really appreciate your support to the military.
Quiet and offered a student discount. Well kept and an awesome way to spend a few hours in Tacoma.
Came to the museum with little expectations and was very impressed right away. The museum has many various galleries including a gallery on glass blowing (Tacoma's claim to fame) and even a gallery on new and upcoming modern art. The tickets are cheap and the art is fantastic, I will be back.
I am not a museum lover, but the TAM is wonderful. They are doing construction and adding to the displays, but there is no interference with your enjoyment of what is open. Beautiful displays of native art with benches so you can just sit and enjoy the artwork. Highly recommended.
Wonderful museum, great little Cafe with small tasty offerings of salads, soups and sandwiches. We spent about 3 hours here with out of town friends.
Great experience for a first time visit. Loads of art. The giant dog made of cardboard, wow well done. Military discount got my group of three all in free. We had a good time even though we didn't even see half the art displayed.
As a first time visitor in Washington I cant compare TAM to other local museums but I really enjoyed it. Such vibrant colors and variety of mediums. Native American and migrant themed art was in abundance and I love the rich culture that is conveyed. There are some incredibly unique and thought-provoking pieces that I will never forget. Parking is pre-pay, cheap quick, and easy.
Really good. Small but good. I was most excited about the Dale Chihuly exhibit also with the 50 Americans. The people why rung us up were very helpful too, we came as a group of 20 AP art history students (school field trip) and entry was originally going to be $13 or something but they were able to find a way to get it down to $5. Really nice people. 10/10 would go again
It was interesting, art is subjective. I did love the glass exhibits and Renaissance paintings.
Dont bring any liquid into the exhibits though they'll pounce on that so fast and you'll have to leave and put it outside or throw it away.
Beautiful place, not overwhelming for those who aren't well versed in the art world, and the even have a couple interactive exhibits. But beware of parking -- there are two lots connected be driveways and without clear markings of where one ends and the other begins, but they have different pay points and if you pay at the wrong one it will cost you $40
I had no idea all that went into glass blowing. The actual process is intriguing and resembles a perfectly choreographed dance of heat and passion. It's not only a beautiful museum, that houses these one of a kind pieces, but with exhibits where the artwork literally hangs from the rafters and pools into crevices in the floor, you see man's gems to be as equally beautiful as any oysters gems. It is truly a must see for three local and certainly for anyone visiting Western Washington State.
Beautiful building, lots to see and do. My favorite part was the free studio open to kids to explore with a bunch of different mediums. There were even prompts on the walls and tables to help them along. Wonderful experience.
We loved the visit except for the one distraction. Staff member was hovering over us and constantly pacing around in circles. I am trying to enjoy the art and I see this guys lingering around us through the side of my eyes. Maybe use the security cameras more if you feel you have to watch you visitors? Any who .. the art was amazing and loved the section where you can try drawings and water colors on you own.
exemplary in every way. staff was respectful and enthusiastic, art was inspired, and exhibits served to provide an unparalleled display of artistic talent throughout the past several centuries, in a way that makes it easy to absorb for the connoisseur as much as the casual visitor. current exhibits are culturally relevant and thought-provoking; enjoyed the thoughtful commentaries on native history in artwork, especially the "vanishing people" myth. gave a deep sense of perspective and would highly recommend it
(review posted 3/3/19, updated to correct spelling)
Really loved the diversity of displays. The Western gallery was great!
Best museum I have ever been to! Lots of amazing pieces of artwork. I especially love the blown glass artwork!
I am sure this is great for people who are into art but my 13 and 15 year old were so bored. I enjoyed the interactive displays and my 2 year old had a great time in the make your own art studio, but if you have angsty teenagers make sure you get the library passes so you don't waste your money.
Just over half of this stunning, modern building is dedicated to near-contemporary art, including impressive glass and jewelry collections. The remaining portion is some fine - albeit rather empty - open spaces, and a 19C western art segment, which I found less interesting. Admission is a little expensive ($15 for adults).
The family and I enjoyed certain parts of the exhibits, but the majority seems dedicated to Native American and southwestern type pieces... Not my favorite. There were, however, a few gems that were enough to balance the experience with the cost.
The museum is beautiful, with wonderful exhibits; the staff is knowledgeable and attentive; the Gift Shop has wonderful items available; highly recommend this museum!
I loved it there and will come back again.
Not what it was under the prior director but it's trying. Diverse exhibits. Kinsey collection is worth more than one visit.
This is a wonderful art museum and the exhibits are rotating. They have some fantastic people who volunteer their time to lead you around the art exhibits and there is also wonderful place to have lunch. A gourmet chef, believe it or not, and food at reasonable prices. This is a gem in Tacoma, so take some time and enjoy art!
I wish there was more to it. I liked about half of what was there. If they had more I would have loved it. So much empty wall space. The world does not have a shortage of art, please put more on your walls!!!
They have a cafe, library, and classrooms, but we didn't check out what any of these were about. The gift store was sad. There was basically a few books and postcards.
The front counter staff was friendly and helpful.
The impressionist exhibit that's on this month was quite good. I am a fan of Mary Cassat and they had several of her works as well as Renoir, Corot and Degas. They are having extra free Thursday evening admissions from 5-8 PM. Usually it's just the third Thursday of the month. Not crowded at all like most free admission nights.
Even though we live in Seattle and not in Tacoma, we keep getting a membership to the Tacoma Art Museum because we love the permanent Western and glass collections as well as the varied visiting shows. This is a perfect weekend activity for us. We like to combine it with a visit to one of several fine coffee shops in the area.
We were excited to visit the Tacoma Art Museum when the new wing opened. It’s beautifully done and filled with some gorgeous pieces. Well worth a visit. I also appreciate that the have free entrance on the Third Thursday Art Walk from 5-8. The museum is convenient to the Tacoma Museum of Glass and works well as a pair. TAM has a superb and quite varied glass collection, which complements TMOG. Its non-glass collections are well presented and interesting. Not a large museum but well worth a visit.
This is one of the best museums I've ever been to. They make a point of bringing in exhibitions that really have something to say, and they don't shy away from making a bold statement. TAM does a lot to support children in the arts, and they're always adding new collections. I bring all my visitors to the TAM. <3
Had a great time with my brother who is an artist and the husband. Admission for us was free because of the military discount so that is always a plus.
The museum is convenient to the Tacoma Museum of Glass and works well as a pair. TAM has a superb and quite varied glass collection, which complements TMOG. Its non-glass collections are well presented and interesting. Not a large museum but well worth a visit. A wonderful community event ... please TAM, do more of these. It's a great way to bring people together to celebrate art and culture
This is my first time to TAM. I saw all the glass features in the Benaroya wing. I highly recommend a visit. I attended on a Saturday and it was very relaxed, not crowded. Tacoma has got it going on! Please don't become Seattle. I'm praying for you but I have faith.
One of my favorite places to go in Washington state. The staff is very friendly, informed, and polite. The galleries are spacious, clean, and well stocked with a variety of art. The TAM has expanded significantly in the 5 years i've been going there.
Phenomenal contribution to the arts in our city. Look out for Neighborhood Thursdays when it's free admission!
Like when I see a unexpected piece from a famous artist that is not their normal style that they are known for. This time around it was Georgia O'keefe.
Nice experience. Pay-for-parking. Wonderful exhibits, especially the Kinsey African American Art & History Collection.
Beautiful exhibit. GREAT TALK with Umman(?) in the gift shop. Used art access pass from the library and was able donate a lil something.
We enjoyed this small well organized museum. The current exhibition about immigrants painting in the West was thoughtfully displayed and explained. The Chihuly exhibits show a small portion of his work. The video is a must see as it explains his process and exhibitions.
Art's big in Tacoma -- and fittingly, TAM possesses heavyweight works in a collection bigger than you'd expect from the outside. Building itself has an interesting architecture to it as well. The expected donations are reasonable for its size and it makes a nice afternoon to see the entire place. I swing by from time to time when they change exhibits.
This place was a lot of fun, short if you donthave too many strong opinions on paintings but perfect for something to do in one afternoon. You could see everything and enjoy it alright in an hour.
Had a pleasant surprise that our glass museum passes got us in to the art museum. The exhibits were great. Loved the Simpsons and the Immigration exhibits.
Great place for the whole family. Not too big or too small. A museum for the masses.
My son loved camp! I appreciated feeling that the staff created a safe, creative environment where artists could flourish! We can't wait for the next opportunity to camp at TAM! Thank you for a priceless week!
Engaging + thoughtful exhibits throughout the year. Their Chihuly collection is always a great highlight.
Great museum that focuses on local art, by more reknown artists in glass, jewelry, and a historical painting gallery. I found the local "amateur" art in the classrooms more relatable than the permanent historical pieces on the first floor. However, there a wonderful pieces throughout the entire museum to study and admire.
Great art studio in Pierce County WA......they have local and nationwide artists. The Cafe makes great food.
Loved the different art displays. My family really enjoyed the free art room available to everyone. Water colors, pencils, markers, all available for creating your own piece of art.
They made me clean the floors after I dropped art work everywhere but still pretty nice
Always have great exhibits, and the parking is cheap!
I love this place. I love the art, and the free third Thursday of the month. I love the live music and the layout of the building. Such a fantastic way to spend part of your life, go here if you can.
Fine museum located in the historic waterfront of old Tacoma. Beautiful galleries featuring outstanding Northwest artists both past and present. Don't miss the black bean coconut soup in the cafe, either!
It's a nice museum. It's not too big, so you can actually enjoy it in a few hours. Other museums almost need like two days to walk through.
We went to the Dia De Los Muertos event and had a great time. There were plenty of things to do! They had performances, kid activities, face painting, Taco trucks & more. We will be back for more events in the future!
Wonderful art work!
This is a small Museum but the collections are always interesting and always so obviously curated with love. The staff is super welcoming. I love the free day once a month making this accessible for everyone in this community
Forgotten Stories is a wonderful exhibit showcasing the northwest and northwest artists. When the WPA funded art and artists, it was not only a way for artists to earn a living and for people to see art, but it was also a gift to the future. I loved this exhibit!
The Tacoma Art Museum is truly one of the many gems hidden within the City of Destiny. "There are actually people who go to the museum?" Is probably the first phrase that will pop up in your mind upon first visiting the establishment. I know this because I said it out loud lol. It's a great place to take your kids every once and a while. The art is diverse and the staff is friendly. Also, kids are free once a month I hear.
Who knew? Lovely, peaceful place.
Amazing artwork and fair priced
Small footprint but top notch. Amazing creative art of all kinds: bronze sculptures, paintings and fantastical-3D that defies imagination. All rolled up into a thoughtful message...for American Indian media - exposes the ludicrous stereotypical portrayal by the press.
Very interesting exhibits, really enjoyed it.
Neighborhood Thursdays is a good way to have a night out with your lady. Nice event.
It was great. I went as a chaperone with a group of elementary students on a field trip. They have a wonderful program for children as well as a classroom available where the children created their own art.
I love that my little 2 year old can create art, we can all enjoy a burger at the restaurant, and then walk around the other art pieces. Thank you for the new American oil painting expansion!
I love going to TAM on their free nights as I currently don’t have extra funds. They have wonderful exhibits and lots of activities for adults and kids.
Was pleasantly surprised to see such an incredible building and collection in Tacoma.
Tacoma Art Museum is a wonderful place. They have lots of local artists, a gift shop, and an area that you can make your own artwork to take with you or leave for others to enjoy.
Kinsey Collection is a must see. As a white person so amazing to see artifacts from the time of slavery and the art is wonderful
Got followed around the museum during my entire visit by an employee who seemed to think that my friends and I were going to cause trouble somehow. Otherwise would give five stars. Great exhibits.
Not the biggest art museum, but well managed with quality exhibits on rotation. If you're a Tacoma resident, don't forget you can get free admission via the Art Pass offered through the Tacoma Public Libraries.
This Art Museum is totally awesome, tons of really cool stuff 😎. Pack a lunch and something to drink, and make a day of it. Enjoy. …
A spectacular museum.....filled with many collections of incredible art including Dale Chihuly's glass. Don't forget to see and appreciate the big dog! See you at TAM.
Really nice museum with a huge variety of exhibits that changes every season. Today we saw Monet, an O Keefe, and a Simpsons exhibit among other things!
This is a fantastic little art museum. But nobody should have to pay to view art. Get a library card and you can get free passes and not have to pay anything.
I enjoyed free first tursday admission.!!!
Dont miss out the first thursday of the month free admission to the museum.
The Kinsey Exhibit of African American History is dope. My 5 year old was in awe of the place. Please go check this exhibit out.
The TAM has a free lobby full of art. And a lot to offer even if you don't want to pay to go inside. And they have few restrooms and drinking fountains.
The Kinsey Collection was life changing...
Great place to take my kids for a day out excursion. There featured exhibit and additional displays entertained my family.
I love this museum. The people are friendly in the cafe. They have a little place for kids to make art and the art itself was impressive.
Wonderful selection. I am always seeing something new. The cafe is also well price with delicious soups and staffed by friendly humans with great humor.
Was my first visit and I will definitely be back! The Kinsey Collection is a must see.
I don't typically care for museums in general but this was a very neat place. Lots of really cool Amazing Ideas and their own dedicated parking lot which made it easy.
The story telling was definitely Powerful.... The colors help bring the strength of the ideals of the life these people, places, biographies involved. Thank-you..
A regional treasure. Great northwest art along with wonderful traveling exhibits. Seems to get better and more expansive all of the time. The Beneroya exhibit is wonderful
Loved this place!!! I took my son here on a rainy day and we just had so much fun. Every thing here is just so fascinating and cool.
Very fun and different art. They are very strict about touching and has someone always watching you, but definitely a place to check out.
Great experience with beautiful art on display🙂 …
Enjoyed it. Not overwhelming like some museums can be. Great exhibits with famous artists.
Was a very informative and expressive experience....recommend going to see the exhibit
Lovely! Food for the soul.
It was fun me family . grandkids did craft for 1hr made drangon .
When I went most of the galleries were cloaed. The art available was great, I just wish there had been a heads up about the closures
This place always amazes me. They have local art and change the center theme monthly. They also hold Dia de Los Muertos every year with local artists and food vendors.
Dale Chihuly's incomparable work is on display here. Go for the Chihuly glass, which is beyond peer.
They have some other stuff too, but the Chihuly collection uses up all my time when I visit.
Very much enjoyed spending some time here with my sister. Interesting exhibits with many different artistic mediums.
Great museum, attentive and helpful staff. Very easy to navigate
I like the glass vessels, the immigration exhibition and the storytelling artist Ryan Feddersen, the story about Coyote Bones is funny and interesting.
What a lovely presentation of Native American artists and their story of early America. Also nicely presented was the Guilulli blown glass art.
This is one of the finer things Tacoma has to offer. A must see for car enthusiasts. My husband and I have been many times and enjoy every visit.
Slim on the exhibits this time around. Look into renting an art pass at your local libray to attend the museum for free.
The Haub Family Collection of Western art is well worth the price of admission. Then you add the rest and you have a great experience.
Excellent changing national shows with a permanent collection that highlights Northwest artists. The Haub Collection of Western Art is unique and enjoyable.
If you love art, come to this. The Western art wing is a MUST SEE. On a budget? It is free one night a month. See their website for details.
I attended a special event at the museum and was greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. Most enjoyable time.
Very nice place with beautiful art. My niece had her wedding here and it was all beautiful. They did a fabulous job.
Bank of America customers.get in free if you have a BofA debit or credit card. Museum is small.but content value is large. Wen through in about 1.5 hours taking our time.
Amazing staff and clean, sanitary facilities. Exhibits are always well organized and easy to view from every angle.
Am willing to raise the rating after I see more of the museum. What I saw during a training seminar appeared to be nice.
Excellent facility and exhibits. Easy access with parking and public transit nearby. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Have been here once. It felt smaller on the inside than the building looked on the outside. Friendly staff. Some nice pieces.
Cool museum. Smaller than you’d think.
I love the artwork here!
Great showcase of Northwest artists. Big enough to spend several hours on one's own, but small enough that it's not too overwhelming for kids
Came for a field trip with my daughters 5th grade class. Would recommend!
Beautiful museum, many glass pieces on display. If you are in Tacoma this is one of the premium spaces here.
Very cool. Plan for about 1-2 hours to visit everything. Military and family receive free admission also
This place has a lot of exceptional art. Free to military friends and guests. Great place to take visitors.
Nice museum. Unfortunately, we only had an hour to explore. Next time will plan on more time to explore.
I was very impressed with the amount they offered for free. And my little had a lot of fun. Kind staff and they kept up on keeping it clean.
Absolutely amazing art museum. Such beautiful French Impressionist paintings on display when I visited.
Very well put together art exhibits. I enjoy the variety of art that is showcased here.
Been twice to the TAM. Great artwork and history behind some pieces. Definitely a place to visit.
TAM is a great place to visit. The cafe is good too. Get a membership. It makes dropping in when you're in the neighborhood easier.
Loved it plus the native American exebit was amazing
One of the best art museums in the Pacific Northwest. Great architecture and always interesting exhibits.
Great place for kids and adults, very beautiful sculptures and glass arts exhibits, highly recommended.
Awesome lovely place to refresh ur brain
Had a great time, employees were understanding and informative. Helped me with what I needed. The facility was very clean and lovely.
On this day the art museum had a children's art exhibit. Truly wonderful for them to display the childrens art for the public to see.
I love all art museums. I was expecting something bigger for Tacoma, as the art scene is relatively popping. Still great!
Some amazing exhibits for such a small museum. Dont expect any works by the Masters of Art. Thats just nof what this place is about.
Friendly staff. Beautiful art collection. Nice work opening to the public and hosting community events.
Great experience with the staff, as well all of the exhibitions were very well curated and very interesting to view.
Wide range of modern and historical art, painting, sculpture, glass and photography. Very well laid out galleries.
Excellent exhibits and staff
There are some really cool pieces here. They don't have a problem with photography without a flash.
Wonderful museum and has Dale Chihuly's glasswork.

Wonderful museum with great historical significance, beautiful architecture, and fun amenities.
Great art and easy to work with staff , but you get done very fast unless you are a art fanatic unlike me.

Not a lot of art to view. It was interesting since I had never been there before.

The kids were bored besides going to the coloring section, this place should present it self to be more magical for the kids,
30 Artists exhibit was life changing. Public feedback to art is a brilliant idea.
There really isn't much art, but what is there is nice.

Fabulous location, fascinating artwork, super friendly staff.
interesting would like to see more of the blank walls covered with art.
Enjoy your day by going. Great place to pass time.
I have many museums to compare this to so it's only downfall is that it's not world class like the Toledo Museum of Art. It's not Tacoma's fault.
Superb museum. The western art collection is stunning.
Little bits of history with some modern.. really chill place
not a huge building but its nice. nice not to have to drive to seattle!
Did a performance. Details were spot on. Artists were beautiful...
