Reviews of RISD Museum
Yulia Berry
I really liked the museum! It was bigger and better than I expected! Good collections! Loved the signs with artists' names and texts, placed next to paintings - they did a great job! It was interesting to read and learn!
I loved the room with European icons and religious sculptures. Many objects were 1000 years old. I loved seeing them!
European art of XVIII and XIX centuries was very nice! The collection of American art was great! Interesting room with textiles.
Highly recommend to visit! Loved the cafeteria in the museum, too! 👍
Dee Kelly
Unbelievably large collection of interesting and unique art. I get bored quickly in art museums but this sprawling collection had so many diverse collections; every room was a new medium to explore! Lots of impressive pieces to recognize juxtaposed with unknowns to discover. I loved it!
Edwin Yu
Much larger and more interesting place than just looking from the outside. The museum connects like four buildings in various walkways, ramps, stairs, and bridges. We ended up spending like two hours here and could have easily spent the entire day.
Lillian Morgan
This was great! I went here with some family, and we all had a good time. There's 6 floors of exhibits, which were all interesting, and not difficult to hit in a couple hours. There was a lot of variety in the types of exhibits. We also stopped by the cafe, which had pretty good hot chocolate. Mine had whipped cream art, which was nice.

It's my favorite location in Providence to visit.
Stunning ancient brown stone building with a charming patio and a secret garden.
One of the best coffees in PVD is served at a cafe there, and it is quite good.
There is a good variety of paintings for several decades.
Impressionist works by artists like Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Monet are among my favorites.
On Sunday, Thursday, and Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., admission is free.
Bryant Wu
Came in Sunday because of free admission. Well-known art museum in the school of design. Most of the buildings are open for exhibition, including student works. The variety of artwork and historical pieces are as reputable as the school's name.
Because the exhibitions are shown in multiple buildings and interconnect with each other. Strongly suggest to ask for maps and staff about directions and guide.

It was an amazing museum! I didn't expect there to be so many different floors full of treasures. We spent about 3 hours and I felt like we rushed. We went on a Sunday when it was free and there were lots of people, but it wasn't crazy. The woman at the front was extremely helpful and gave us tips on how to view everything.
Definitely a must see when in the area!
I added some of my favorite pictures ❤
Gayle Hanrahan
We are so lucky to have this amazing museum in RI. And Sundays are free!😊👍 the modern and impressionist collections are my favs. And the Buddha room. They have an exhibit there now featuring gowns from the Gilded Age that are decaying and soon will be gone. They are exquisite. Don't miss. And beautifully air-conditioned on a warm June afternoon 😎

What a wonderful way to spend a few hours! RISD has an unexpectedly large collection, ranging from American art to artifacts from ancient China, the Middle East, and Egypt. It was so interesting to view the collections here. Side note: no backpacks are allowed into the galleries so you have to use the lockers up front.
Dana K
This museum was way bigger than I expected. I guess it’s obvious but look at a map before you go so you can prioritize what you want to see first. I spent too much time on contemporary art which is not my favorite and felt pretty tired out by the time I got to the Greek/roman, Egyptian, and impressionist exhibits. Definitely go when they have free admission!!
Lisa Flynn
Excellent smaller art museum. Permanent collections are wonderful - Roman, Greek, Egyptian and European artwork as well as lovely furniture collections. Have seen many thought provoking, interesting exhibits here over the years with a wide variety of media and messages. My favorite place to visit in Providence. The shop is a gem too - located across the street from Main St entrance.

There is a great selection of different types of art: from Ancient Egyptian artifacts to Medieval Christian paintings, and from Neoclassical paintings to Contemporary works. Bathrooms and water fountains are at convenient locations and are clean. Entry for students and children is free.
Eric Golden Dana
One of the coolest museums I've been too in a long time!! So many different time periods and collections of works.
It was one of the best ways I've spent a weekend and I wish I would have had longer to explore all of the amazing art!
I'll be going back for sure!
Zackary Conte
This Museum contains a lot of historical content ranging from mummies and the Jin dynasty to modern day issues such as disabilities and HIV. You’ll have to come back to this museum multiple times before you really get the full grasp of everything they have to provide! If you’re in Providence this is the place to visit!

Wow!!! The Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) was incredible, for lack of a better word, which is an understatement. It isn’t huge like MOMA or the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, but I was properly impressed with their exhibits. I especially loved their Asian Art Galleries and European Galleries, ergo the pictures. Ive never spent so much time in either back in NYC. Sometimes you just take things for granted because they are right under your nose and easily accessible, and then you go somewhere else and you realize the beauty these things from the past offers. Ive always loved history as a subject in school, and every time I see remembrances from the past, I want to read about those times again. It’s like 50 First Dates every time. You learn something new each time. That’s what i felt about my visit to RISD today. History, beauty, and learning. Admission is free on Sundays, 10-5; Thursdays and Fridays, 5-7 also. Apparently, this should be planned because otherwise it is $17 per adult🫣. But it is worth it though. There are discounts for select patrons, i.e., military and AAA members, etc. Check out their website if you are around the area for more info. If you are driving and need parking, mention visiting to RISD to get a discounted rate at the Metro lot down the hill. Good for the whole day.

what a gem of a museum. Great collection, all different styles of art in history. Amazing place to spend the day admiring art and its past.
Dr Mohammad El-Nesr
I have visited this museum in the weekend for my daughter's class of art history. The museum is well organized, but lacking guides, as there are few human guides, and no computer guides at all to search by age or location. We asked about works before the 1300, the guided us to the 5th floor where we found some Roman monuments, but later we realized that the 6th floor is packed with Egyptian monuments and other old ones that are amazing. We hope that the museum add e-guides. Thanks...
Briana Gagnon
The entire place is a confusing maze but their is alot to see. Don't get too close or someone might yell at you. Take the time to appreciate the hard work and beauty around. Also don't forget to check out the student section on the 2nd floor.
Ticket can be free for a variety of reasons, check out the website before visiting.
Mariani Kino
We loved this two part museum: the modern part and the modeled house. Very informative. Fascinating!
Japheth Wood
Wonderful exhibits! Each room was exciting, although only a few exhibits grabbed my 6 year old's attention.
Ale
Nice museum, particularly enjoyed the student gallery on the 2nd floor. There is a another 4 floors to see really big place, the day I went it was free
Kelly Cambridgeport
The Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence has an impressive collection of art and furniture. I spent two hours there. Nice cafe.
Priya Srinivasa
What a gem!!! Driving through Providence, we decided to stop in at the museum and so glad we did! Our only regret... Not having enough time to see the museum entirely! We would come back to spend half a day just to stop and admire every piece of art there. My 12 and 8 year olds were impressed and didn't want to leave and that's saying something!
Henry on the museum floor was so warm and welcoming!
Donell Buggs
Had a good time seeing all of the great art work. The creativity is awesome. Brilliant minds. Some of the stories behind the art was simply amazing. We were fortunate to get free tickets to visit so I'm not sure of its admission cost. It's a must see.
Cal
Such a beautiful selection of artwork. There is a Van Gogh and a few Monets. The artwork created by students were incredible! It really exemplifies the talent RISD elicits.
Emilie K
I was visiting RISD for graduation so lucky for me, entry was free. On the regular, entry is $17 for adults. I live in DC where Smithsonian’s have free entry so I was surprised. But I really enjoyed the museum displays, especially the students exhibit.
Kendra Wilson
Incredible art in so many different forms. They have multimedia, painting, textiles, furniture, sculptures, and everything in between. My sister and I were amazed at the wide selection and some of the art they had on display. We enjoyed our trip here and spent almost 2 hours and couldn't see everything before they closed. Allot a good amount of time of you want to look at everything!
Meng Choy
Not a big museum but full of surprises. They have a couple of French impressionist paintings from the masters like Monet and Cezanne. Also check out their Egyptian display. I try to visit this museum whenever I'm in Providence.
Nick Deal
Awesome collection! Great place to spend time admiring history in art.
Yonas Hassen
You can’t really go wrong visiting this museum. They have an incredibly diverse set of mediums: paintings, sketches, photography, sculptures, film, furniture, and more! There’s something for every art lover. Go between the hours of 5pm & 7pm for free admission.
Lisa Whelpley
We enjoyed it, but even BETTER is the RISD student work on the second floor.
Benjamin Gipson
Diversity and impactful art sets apart a good museum from a great one. And RISD hit both of those markers as each section had an intentional and important message the art was invoking. Plus, it's always intriguing to see the work of the young artists of the program.
Manny Sergentakis
Great collection. Mosaics, coins, and paintings are beautiful.
Laura Myers
So cool!! We saw an unsigned Van Gogh, a Monet, a Picasso, an Egyptian sarcophagus, Ancient Greek marble, etc. Great meal in the cafe, very informative staff. Great visit all around!
Catalina Fulger
So many works of art, a lot to see in this lovely museum! What a nice surprise to see a Chihuly piece!
John Murphy
Loved how themuseum went from one bldg to the other and all of the furniture room layouts. Feels like you get a Museum and a mansion tour all in one and the art on display is very diverse, covering g a lot of different time periods and areas.
Seth Grimes
The RISD museum is definitely worth seeing. It's small, but they make excellent use of their space. The museum has some really interesting works from RISD alumni, and some more famous ones that I did not epect to see (especially from the impressionists). I also saw my first Goya here. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Robert Blauvelt
We wanted to take advantage of the free admissions after 5pm on Thursday and Friday, but when we arrived at about 5.30pm we were advised by the security guard that they were closing at 6pm (the admissions desk staff did not tell us we had only a short time). The website did not indicate the early closing, or we would have waited until Friday. So we made the trip to Providence from Cranston for only 15 minutes in the museum. The security staff were not very friendly as they pushed us out the doors for a private event.
C Fad
We got in free today. Lovely and rich museum. Must visit!
Robert Drake
RISD's museum is excellent for its size. The collections are well curated and easily accessible. RISD has noted alums who are well represented. Allow two and a half hours if you want to take your time.
jay frails
Very interesting museum.. A lot of beautiful art. Take your time. Don't be in a rush. Stop and have something toe eat while your there.
David Foxe
I so admire Rafael Moneo as an architect. But without the escalator providing escalation, the circulation is confusing. I admire several of the galleries immensely whilst others appear to be works in progress or unclear in their contents. Yet the school groups and others there during my visit were enjoying their time, and I have thought often of many individual groupings of art since I left, so it is my hope that other areas of the museum canvas are given additional brushwork.
Glenn Gissler
The RISD MUseum is incredible! While less known than the school, the museum and the school were created at the same time (1877) and they have been collecting ever since. The collection is increible and the overall museum a very comfortable scale.
GO! GO! GO!
Tim Pote
Great museum with unique exhibits and a truly fantastic "raid the icebox" series of curated exhibits. We were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of the exhibits and pieces at a college museum (yes, yes, I realize this is RISD). Enjoyed the wide range of art and styles as well as how well the museum was presented. Well worth the visit!
Matthew Denver
So many things to see, from an ancient Egyptian mummy to a large wooden Buddha, Impressionists to modern artists. Kids are free anytime and everyone is free on Sundays!
j hwang
This is definitely touted as one of the must sees while in Providence. To be honest, I found the museum interesting and a good way to kill time if nothing else to do but I wasn't blown away. It is small but has several floors and mazes to wander about. I thought there would have been more original pieces on display from students but there was really only one small section.
There is a Bolt coffee shop if you need some caffeine boost to help you treck your way through the museum.
Entry is free on sundays!
Manish Rajguru
Extensive collections of various art and historical items. Will have to go back to see all the exhibits I missed. Free Fridays 5-7.
PETER PANICKER
Fantastic place to spend time and view all of the beautiful artwork. This museum is well worth it and the price point is fantastic. They have quite a few works from famous artists. The student portion of the museum is stellar as well.
lisa benet
Beautiful art museum. Well worth a visit.
Christine Liang
Beautiful collection of art, ranging from works by RISD students to famous names like Monet. There are also several section dedicated to ancient artifacts. The special exhibits are always fun to check out. Free on Sundays so what are you waiting for??!
Emmett Sills
Lovely museum with a diverse and extensive mix of contemporary works (“Raid the Icebox Now”) and works of many eras past (“Samurai at Leisure”) from all over. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit and hope to do so again soon.

Size and variety of the museum collection knocked me off my feet. Too much! Building is gorgeous.
G Aquino
The museum looks deceptively small from the lobby but it does open up to spacious major wings at the upper floors, housing the rich and diverse collection of art from all over the world, some dating from antiquity. As expected, the narrative is design-centric, highlighting various aspects of design as they relate to art. We planned to be here for less than an hour but ended up staying for two.
The admission fee of $15 is pretty reasonable. They also offer free admission every Sunday. There is paid street parking available but we didn't have any luck finding a spot and ended up parking two blocks north.
Brenda P
You won't be disappointed with this museum. Even though it is small, it does stand up to a bigger museum. You can get through it in an afternoon and still see beautiful works of ancient, classic, and modern art.
Joseph John
Excellent art installations of different cultures and time periods, has exhibits of RISD past and present students. Can take up an entire day . Admission is free on sunday so do plan to accordingly. There is a store and a coffee shop on site
jackie l
Great museam if you enjoy art and history. My 12 year old daughter actually dragged me here for the day and we had a great time. I was impressed by all the great artists they display original work from like Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. I am also impressed with the ancient Egyptian artifacts and an actual mummy coffin and canopic jars that had organs in them. All around a great place and it is free every Sunday.
Valerie Drachova
Stunning museum featuring a vast collection of Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian pieces. Also has a fully furnished Victorian home inside the museum and modern fashion exposition. 3 hours flew by. Bonus - great coffee shop downstairs
Rafael Ferreira
Went in the late afternoon when there is no charge to get in. A lot to look at and some Picasso and Monet originals that were really awesome to see. Easily spent 3 hours and could have been there for longer.
Lisa McCarthy
This is an awesome art museum located on Rhode Island School of Design campus. They have an impressive collection including Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Renoir, Eames, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc and also some ancient artifacts. My favorite are the mummies and the Budda. it's free every Sunday, filled with fun things to see and activities for the kids. Id definitely recommend checking it out!
Bruce Barnett
Not at the highest level of art museums, such as Boston's Museum of Fine Arts or Philadelphia's best, but darn close. Do not miss it.
Sara
I didn’t want to visit Providence without stopping at the RISD museum. It was certainly worth the trip. The inside felt like a maze of beautiful art pieces with each room flowing into the next. I especially loved the photography, though that’s also a personal interest. The museum was clean and modern, and also in a great part of town. I also liked the faces overlooking the stalls in the women’s bathroom. I never forgot I was in a museum - even on my bathroom breaks!
Joseph Barboza
Great eclectic museum that includes art from ancient Egypt, Greco-roman art, paintings by masters like Monet, Renoir, Rembrandt and Picasso as well as modern artists like Jackson Pollack. A little bit of everything from every continent and every era! A great place to spend 2 or 3 hours walking through history!
java 58
They have tons of art ranging from 3650 BCE -present. I think there was 3 or 4 floors. It was pretty cool.
Nathan Santos
Exceptional museum with fine arts! The exhibits are loaded with fascination. The ancient artifacts were very interesting. I went there on a Sunday, which Sundays are free for all visitors. You also don't need to buy tickets in advance. Especially when we went. They held a model of the house itself. They transformed a beautiful mansion into this fine crafted museum. They also had a mummy model. So cool to learn more about Egyptian culture! I truly recommend going! I loved this place! 👍
Tim Cashman
Nice medium size Museum. Varied collection from students art, impressionists, Roman and Asian. Many small rooms. A bit confusing floor plan. Lots of docents to aid any search.
Ol Akinrimisi
RISD Museum is wonderful! It is free on Sundays and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The exhibits range from temporary installations to wonderful classic examples of ancient life and art. My favourite rooms are textiles and costumes as well as one room on the sixth floor that holds a massive Japanese carved Buddha Mahavairocana (I am serious, this seated structure of the enlighted Siddhartha takes up the whole room; I have been in fascination with it since I was 9). This Sunday I really enjoyed the exhibit by Yinka Shonibare and pretty much spent my afternoon in one room but that is the norm for me (I usually end up in the same sections oohing and ahhing over ancient textiles, costume details, new installations, and Buddha).
As always the museum staff is courteous and cheery in giving directions- having the name of the exhibit is best; giving them a description willl likely end up with you in a general section- pictures of what you are looking for are helpful, too. You are allowed to take pictures unless told otherwise (not allowed to touch, usually). Parking on Sundays is not so bad since all the meters are free towards the evening. However parking is a different story on any other day, anyone who has been to the courthouse or Brown Uni can attest to this. No matter where you park be ready to walk down a hill; it is rare for space near the museum to be open. The museum has a cafe and a gift shop- I cannot say much about either since I usually just breeze past them but people seem to enjoy both spaces since they are regularly busy.
Overall, the museum is a great space to enjoy by yourself, on a date, or with family. Especially on a Sunday when it is free 😊.
Veronika Klubnica
This museum has a wonderful small collection. I love the impressionist room. Also, it is free on Sundays which is how I ended up there. I would give this place a five star except for a few small issues that can be fixed. One is that RISD's website is very difficult to navigate, I didn't know what I would find there even though I really tried to find out. And second, even more confusing is the museum map! Seriously! I've been to a lot of museums, and they often have not poorly made maps, but this one beat them all. Please, improve your map, it is very frustrating.
Rosella
Beautiful museum! A great mix of different art styles and a lot to explore
Blair Walker
Phenomenal I entered to see rich history, art, and so on. I gotten taken to other worlds, met with ancestors and transcended to the spiritual realm.
Elif Asar
There are couple of cool pieces. Free sunday tickets!
Deborah LC
Free on Sundays. The best of the best. Picasso, Monet, Degas, Rodin...
Richard Levy
One of the finest art museums for modern art in the Northeast. If you cannot make a trip to Boston or NYC right now, come to RISD Museum. You won't be disappointed.
Anja Schwieterman
Went here with a few people, mostly to look for a piece to do my art history paper on. I was very impressed with the scope of the art. They had art from so many periods and artist like Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso. However, the rooms where the art was housed were very small and I kept being nervous I would touch something on accident. I also was followed by docents everywhere I went. I didn't feel like I could enjoy the art because they kept staring at me and watching me like I was going to do something wrong. I understand it's the job to make sure people aren't misbehaving, but I wasn't doing anything suspicious. Would go again, but this first time kind of put me off.
Heather Mezzacappa
RISD Museum is such a treat to visit. I really like the range of artwork they feature and the creative ways they integrate modern pieces and concepts with ancient art.
karen luna
The place is small, but it's nice and you can see to many things. We came 10 months ago and now today we went again. You need to check in the page of the museum because they have different prices for different days of the week or weekend. When we went the first time I remember it was free, today you have to pay. So I recommend check the page before to come.
Lisa Howe
Excellent selection of works from ancient to modern. Free admission on Sunday. Creative hands-on activities like tracing the anatomy of featured pieces. Downtown in easy walking distance of cafés and shops.
Laurie Arshonsky
Gem of a place with a wonderful collection of impressionist paintings, Asian Art, modern art and the period house with furnishings and art. It’s free on Sundays! Don’t miss this extraordinary museum if you are in Providence or on the way to Newport! The Bolt cafe in the Lobby is worth stopping in! Staff is helpful and friendly!
Magikarp Boy
We went here during the free hours. They have a varied collection on famous European painters, some Egyptian art, modern art, RISD student art, Pendleton House exhibit, fabrics and textiles, drawings, and more. Kind of a maze inside but its good to just get lost and explore the exhibits!
Paul
Fantastic museum with interesting collections. Free on Sundays. Fun area with good food choices.
Joan Law Lowell
RISD art museum is like no other! It holds some fantastic ancient work, plus fabulous pieces from Van Gogh, Renoir Renoir, Monet and much more! In addition, they have some contemporary art too! Not to be missed in your trip to Providence if you appreciate art.
Grace Fu
It has discount for students with ID! It’s big and with so many exhibitions in. So many visitors!
Natalie Holden
An absolute must when visiting Providence. RISD offers an eclectic range of art and furniture. I especially enjoyed the Raid the Icebox exhibit, absolutely fascinating and thought provoking.
Dawn McNeal
My first time at the museum in many years. It was okay. I would like to see more native american art, there appeared to be almost nothing. One would expect even RISD to support the culture in the area.
Eric Davidson
Took advantage of the Free after Five promotion on Thurs/Fri and it was worth the visit. Quite a wide range of art within the collection. You can easily see everything within the given two hours.
Lori Bailey
This place was surprisingly large with multiple floors filled with art of all types: sculpture, painting, drawings. The current special exhibition included some drawings with chalk that were incredible.
The floor plan and map is confusing and hard to follow. However, the docents were extremely patient and friendly and more than willing to provide guidance.
We didn't allot enough time to see everything, as we thought it was only going to be a small collection of local artists work. I would recommend setting aside at least 2 hours to see it all and maybe more if you want to read everything as well.
Parking was an issue. We drove around a bit before we found a lot at the bottom of the hill. Mention that you are going to the museum and you pay a flat rate. It is a bit of a walk UP hill to get to the museum. I don't think those with mobility issues would have an easy time of it.
Emily Williams
Beautiful art museum. Lovely inclusive exhibits and a pretty quick visit time. I was able to calmly walk thru and see everything in an hour. I was also able to use the free after 5 ticket special to visit for free. That was super helpful since I am unemployed.
John Flack
Fantastic. I was especially impressed with the inclusion of the very best works of local and student artists alongside the established masters. This is a living museum of art & design, not a mausoleum.
Phil J
I can’t believe this museum is in Providence! The exhibit halls are amazing and filled with incredible examples of fine art around every turn! There are works by famous artists, whom would be recognizable by anyone... such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol, Monet, among many others! Besides all the great paintings, there is a colonial era wing with period furnishings and artifacts. There’s Roman artifacts... so so much to see! Right here in Providence! Go! Check it out!
Donna Laird
Please go if you have the opportunity! I went with my soon to be 21 year old grandson. He told me it was epic!! I too enjoyed it as much as he did. It was quite educational.
Kacper Jarecki
Free on Sundays! Can't beat the price. It's fun to see the huge exhibits that they have on multiple floors and multiple buildings! Must see!!!
Seth Dwyer-Frazier
Lovely art museum with a unique collection. It's association with the school of design also provides for an additional source of unique art that is well worth a visit.
Carol Tate
A very eclectic collection, worth the visit. They offer free admission on Sunday (a small donation is always appreciated though).
Robert Berman
Great art museum (especially on Sundays when it's free for)! Bigger than I thought it would be and a great variety of art.
Mary Matzko
Amazing experience. Collections of wonderful pieces of the world's history ~ along with collections from current artists. A must see!
M P
Beautiful stuff! Worth the visit.
Laurence Rosen
Staying one week in Providence allowed us to visit this unique museum twice because the collection is fantastic and the physical museum is unique.
Rorpin Dong
Really cool buildings build around the hill. Combined old structures with the new and modern.
The paths in the museum is mystical and interesting as well, like maze connected by different hall ways that leads to various art pieces.
There's paintings from Vincent Van Gogh, sculptures by Rodin as well as art piece from China, India and modern American. This is the first time for me to see fabrics, lace and costume designs. Fantastic collections!
Admission is $12, discount for senior, students and toddlers. What a treat for the minds!
Kanika YogaCompany. in
Art from RISD Graduates has always been very strong and defining. Definitely a place you would want to visit - Yogacompany.in
Ana Sencion
There is some amazing art work displayed here. Also the set up of the museum is fascinating.
F Laz
Free entry on Sundays, so do consider that before heading over! The museum is a treat for those who want a bit of everything in terms of art. I was particularly blown away with the scheduled program of Ben Nacor who played piano pieces inspired by the moon in the room of European Paintings.
Allow for at least 2 hours for quite a fast paced visit
Rochelly Cruz
Nice museum, better then expected. The displays / exhibits were nicely set up. Was nice to see a mix of student work and historical artists. They didn't mind photography I choose not to take pictures and enjoy the exhibits.
Nikki Powers
In a lovely part of Providence; so much to this museum! A locker was complimentary for the things I was not allowed to bring in (like my backpack-style purse)
Jaime Velazquez-Garcia
A bit small but otherwise a great day of art. They have a ton of works from super famous artists and the neighborhood around it is great.
stephen scott
A wonderfully curated museum. The staff was friendly as long as you don't get too close to the paintings. There was a lot to enjoy, don't miss the neat sarcophagus on the 6th floor. We went on a Sunday so there was no cost to enter. Just get the tickets online for free and enjoy a wonderful Sunday morning stroll past some incredible art works.
cy
Great museum. Variety of offerings. Free on sundays.
Christian Suriani
If you are visiting or live in Providence, this is totally a must for your itinerary. The museum spans 4 floors and has very diverse exhibits - everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts to digital media and everything in between. My wife and I were awed by the great hall containing some beautiful renaissance works and were delighted by the original Monets and other impressionist paintings. It was also very inexpensive - only $17 for a full price adult ticket.
Paula Novaez
This was a spur of the moment visit after dropping off a family member at the airport. It was well worth the detour! One highlight for me was the replica of Charles Pendleton's home, complete with furnishings and art work. Another was artwork by RISD students and alums.
Bardiya Akhbari
Such a nice museum. They have many good items and the place is lovely. It's super crowded on Sundays, so if you do not like crowded museum do not go there on Sundays. The coffeeshop at the lobby is great and so artistic. They have some modern art paintings and objects; however, the furnitures are a big part of it. This place is amazing and must-go if you are staying in Providence for a short time. The only problem is that if you are living in Providence, they do not bring new paintings or etc. as often.
Gretta Kellogg
Much larger than I expected, filled with such amazing works of art! The historical art works of many nations across millennia. It is an inspiring time.
Grant Dervishi
This is one of America’s best small art museums. It’s a little pricey and the gift shop isn’t that great but it has a nice collection
Carrie Wagler
A good museum with a varied collection and knowledgeable staff. Don’t go to Providence without stopping in! Give yourself 2-4 hours.
Jeff
One of America's finest small museums. The art on display represent outstanding examples from all art forms, especially early silver from Gorham Manufacturing. If you're visiting Rhode Island, make this gem a must-see!
Audra Preston
Absolutely stunning! They had some incredible pieces that spoke volumes! Truly amazing artist! Even saw some Van Gogh, Piccasso, and Monette!

Decent place. Didn't like it as much as other big art museums...
Juan Roures
Very interesting, especially the Asian area. Nice staff too.
david francis
Very interesting collection including some big-name Impressionists and historical furniture etc. A bit hard to navigate around as spread over two buildings - sometimes you have to take a lift up and walk through a gallery in order to go down! Unfortunately the whole fourth floor was closed for renovations when we visited. Free on Sundays.
KEN MCKINLAY
The outside and the reception area give no sense of the size of the building and its collection. The collection is rich and varied and well displayed, the captions for each item are particularly good. Only niggle is that, despite the helpful staff, the building is hard to navigate. A little more guiding would be useful, half a * deducted for that. Cafe food range is quite limited but good quality and the staff are lovely.
Radu Oprea
Well curated art museum with a section of furniture and some industrial design. Highly recommended.
Mackenzie Brisben
Overwhelming in the best way possible.
Keyra Fernandez
Art one of my greatest pleasures.
Griffin Quirk
It's a labyrinth so make sure you have time and take a map from the front. A good mix of pieces and connections, as well as some preserved history (fabrics, dinnerware, furniture, etc.) but no straight path through. This can lead to fun discoveries but otherwise just ask a docent/security guard for help. Make sure you go to the student gallery, as it has some fresh ideas and topical pieces. Great location in the city if you've got time to walk.
Emily M
Love this museum! They always have something new. The special exhibits are great! It's not overwhelming and you can see most of the exhibits on one visit
deborah leong
Went to see the Gorham Silver Collection. Very nice display. They had several events and collections going on at the same time. Very crowded. Needs a future return visit. Lots of staff on hand to assist visitors.
S Almeida
Great selection of art from all over the world. Great place to spend an afternoon, but the floor layout is like a labyrinth. I have been coming here for years and I still couldn't tell you where exactly the Roman Art room is. I never find it, it finds me.
Parth Shah
Great place to visit. Esp loved their collection of European and Christian art.
Josh Kessler
Great place to spend a couple hours! The museum has a nice mix of paintings, sculpture, clothing, ceramics, etc from different periods and regions of the world.
Sistah Fenn
It could've included more African AND Egyptian art but hey, it's Rhode Island, they didn't even have Native American art there. DO BETTER than this mediocrity RISD
Joe Cole
Very extensive arrays of art of all types of mediums. It would take a full day to take it all in, possibly more. But worth it!
Thanh Duong
Very great museum with lots of art to see. Much of it is thought-provoking and interesting to look at. However, there was no Peter Griffin. I was very much looking forward to coming to Rhode Island in order to look at the Family Guy Museum, but unfortunately, the Family Guy wing was either sealed off or too obscure to locate. My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined. RISD is fortunate its alumnus Seth McFarlane, creator of the hit comedy cartoon Family Guy, is not here to see the sorry state of his museum and school. If the Family Guy Wing is not available for viewing, what will come next? Maybe they'll even cut the iconic 120ft Peter Griffin statue at the front of the RISD entrance. What about the essential naked Seth McFarlane logo used for all school currency and legal transactions under the RISD name?
- 5/5 still a very good museum, even without the promised 327,421 picture collection of Family Guy.
Michaela Bush
Very eclectic museum. Personally, I'm not a modern art aficionado. There are some gorgeous classical pieces well worth the time. If you love modern art this is your place!
Tony Nguyen
Place was super chill. Sundays are free and the curators are knowledgeable and friendly
noobnoobiest
GREAT STAFF! Wonderful pieces of human existence. Something for everyone ! Do it...
Charles Marlow Stanfield
Bigger than you think! Lots of cool stuff. We spent close to an hour and I feel like I missed a whole lot.
Rodrigo Pimentel
Love the "Inventing Impressionism" room with great works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Monet! Also thankful for the public service RISD provides by offering ample free hours to visit during the week & weekend.
Brendan Ritter
Way larger on the inside than it appears. It also has a variety of art from many different time periods. Definitely worth a visit. Also may be free on sundays.
Ashley M
Visiting and saw admission was free on sundays, great to kill time for 45-60 min
Katie Geren
I have been to many museums including the Guggenheim, MET, and MoMA. This one is my favorite out of all of them! The galleries are numerous and well laid out. The flow of people is nice and everyone is quiet and respectful. I like to study and view each piece and I never felt pressured to step away by a stream of pushy people. I liked the variety of modern, contemporary, and other paintings. I must say parking can be a tad tricky, you may have to park in a scattered lot by the college, but I don’t mind the walk through downtown. It’s not a big one. Cant wait to come back!
Kelli Noonan
Though not the most impressive museum in the world, it still has things that will leave you in awe. The large Buddah statue is always a highlight and I do love the student exhibits as well. The way it's setup is a lot of fun, like a big maze in the middle of the city. And for Providence, this is by far the biggest art collection you are going to find. I do wish there was more Indigenous art, as RI is Narragansett tribe land. But alas, perhaps they will add more. For now, it's a lovely place for a day date or to wander around solo. One of my favorite places to wander & think out life decisions -- and I'm so happy it's open again after being closed for over a year to the public!
Shuping Lu
I was pleasantly surprised by what a great collection of treasures a university museum could have.
Faron Brazis
Free on Sunday! Beautiful collection, with a bit of everything.
Ashley Sausman
This museum is free on Sundays and I've found the collection to be quite impressive. It has such a variety of artwork, there's a little something for everybody!
Ivor Ip
Excellent collection for students or anybody, compact curation but has very noted works.
Erica G
Great encycopedic museum with some surprise famous pieces.
VinnyLegend
Beautiful exhibits
Wonderful staff that help when you get lost
The staff and security often gave me breif explanations or help take pictures
Wonderful experience for my first time in an art museum in ages
Idk if it was a great experience since I arrived at opening, but it was worthwhile visit for class
Arlen Donders
Such a beautiful and thoroughly educational museum. A must see!
Austin
Well kept. Map needs to be improved in the guide to maximize discover ability.
Donna Fernandes
So much fun! You get pulled into different areas just through a little bit of exploration. A very nice museum
Clara Ponce
This place is much bigger than it appears to be. Lots of beautiful artwork and a refreshing garden in the courtyard.
S Overgaard
Great educational museum. Amazing collections, great staff....and the WORST layout. So confusing and lacking relevant identification, documentation, and descriptions of items on display. "Interesting vase, what is it, who made it, when, and why is it significant? " "Sorry, no clue.". Poor staff are constantly bombarded w confused patrons.
jenna soares
What a wonderful museum! Small but diverse selection with a little bit of everything, modern, renaissance, Egyptian etc. Highly recommended.
Richard Masciantonio
Visited using pass from local library for free admission for 2. (Courtesy of Fairhaven Millicent Library: no need to return the pass; just go grab it with your library card)
Lots of great art from a wide range of styles.
Isaac
Pretty eclectic collection of paintings and historical (and contemporary) artifacts, ranging from silverware and plates to figurines and a sarcophagus. Good museum to tour especially on a rainy day, but definitely need to get tickets in advance online due to covid.
Ruthann Catharine
I don't know why I never came here before, it was pretty great. Free on Sundays. Lots of parents on Sunday, I brought my baby and there were a bunch of other kids and babies there with their families. Very family friendly other than the lady at the front desk who didn't want me to bring my diaper bag upstairs. I was impressed at the artwork available to look at, big names like Monet and Picaso. The painting descriptions on the wall were well written and interesting.
Sam A.
Really impressive museum! We were pleasantly surprised how legitimate and robust the exhibitions were. The student art on floors 1 and 2 was just as impressive as the rest of the museum's collection.
Soumyadeep Mukherjee
We went on a Sunday afternoon which is free. We had around 3 hours as we were late and I had underestimated the time it would take to view all the galleries and the exhibits. There are tons of interesting art pieces including furniture, utensils, photographs, paintings, and sculptures. The cafe downstairs is a nice place to get together and hang out between visits. I do not pretend to have a fine understanding of all types of arts. Still, I feel a couple of additional hours (4-5 hours) total would be optimal for me. If you discern specific items minutely, it can take even more. Overall, it exceeded my expectations.
Kristen Fissell
Highly recommend!!! Exceptionally well curated, we spent 3-4 hours in here and would come back and bring friends. Very impressed with the layouts and quality of art. Made for a very memorable weekend.
Barry
I was surprised by the things I found in what I thought was a tiny museum. It's no Louvre or MET, but still a gem, no matter how tiny it may compare.
Hector Andres Morales Rosado
It surprise me the amount of great art they posses. You should be aware that is confusing the navigation through it. The layout of the building do not allow a straight forward way to go around. Also, it has many floors and elevators are scatter not in a predictive way. Plan on asking the many staff members that they have. They are super helpful. I loved the great wood statue of Buddha Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai). I think if you do it in a swift way you can see it in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Robert Dunn
The Rhode Island School of Design's (RISD) museum is a must visit when in the Providence area. The museum has a little bit of everything for visitors to enjoy. The holdings include wonderful Impressionist paintings, Sargent paintings, Greco-Roman pieces, silver work and a 19th century house. The cafe provides a great rest stop as visitors take a break from the museum's quirky structure built as it is on a hillside.
Meredith Walther
Fantastic place to wander through and find beautiful surprises in each gallery
Raymond Ramos
To be honest I went in with low expectations since we have some of the best art museums in the world in NYC. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the museum and the collection. My students and I enjoyed the ancient artifacts. The number of world renowned painters they had on display was amazing. We didn’t know there was an old house attached which was fantastic. The student stuff we barely looked at. They even had a wheelchair for one of my students free of charge. We needed about 1.5 hours to see it all. I would definitely go back.
Albert Yee
A wonderful collection of work is housed here. I visited in December of 2018 and saw 3 different exhibits, but sadly, the student gallery was not open--I'm assuming a new show was going up. The main collection room showcased a good range of mediums and items ranging from textiles to photography and from industrial design to sculpture.
One particularly interestng facet of the museum is that instead of typical staid descriptions of the artworks, they have quotes from the exhibited artist.
Sundays are free for all which is something I always like to see from museums to allow anyone who is able to get there to get in for free every week.
Michael Rabideau
Great museum to spend an entire afternoon at.
Perry Stein
Wonderful museum with a eclectic mix of exhibits including a bunch of of nice impressionist works
John Saylor
Small, but interesting enough. They have a little bit of everything, and it's presented somewhat originally. Honestly, the coffee shop in front was my favorite part. As for the art museum, I would expect a bit more from such a famed institution. I mean, it's never gonna be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, so why try to be that when NYC is only 3 hours away.
K Francis Cardoso
Great wandering through here on free Thursday evenings.
Craig Rydecki
What an eclectic collection. Wonderful!
Yehoshua Tikvahntez “sal” sal Peretz
Very well locate museum in RI , all the six floors exhibitions were very interesting
Even the exhibition about the Muslim woman was beautiful, Her are changed since moving to USA looking for her freedom of expression
D Feliz
I would go all the time with my best friend and it’s very nice. Each section has its own theme. Good place to go and inexpensive
John
Very cool museum! Stumbled upon it while looking for things to do in Providence. Worked out that there is no entrance fee on Sundays! Lots of old (2000+ years) art, stonework, etc that is interesting. Also more modern art and as recent as 2018. Includes very well-known (Monet, Picasso, Degas, Pollock) as well as RISD student work which we very much enjoyed. Huge museum with stuff for anyone and everyone. Well worth the visit!
Matthew Boyd
So much variety! If you like textiles, painting, sculpture, or anthropology, there is something (or many things) here for you. Visited on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised that Sunday admission is free! Plan to spend a few hours - definitely worth a visit.
RANT
Very big with nice exhibits!
Kyle Minns
A must see. A smaller museum but not lacking by any means...
Shawn Germain
Really beautiful museum, well worth the visit
There is modern art and ancient art, something for everyone!
Tyler McCraw
This is the best art museum I've ever visited, hands down. There is a wide range of cultures represented along with many varying forms of art. From Grecian sculptures and Egyptian sarcophagi to a 10 foot tall wooden Buddha and Frank Lloyd Wright architectural pieces, all exhibits were well orchestrated and carefully organized.
Make sure to grab a map on your way in and have a chat with the upbeat, friendly staff. Also, plan on spending two hours here at the very least. I wanted to spend the entire day here to see and read everything, but, sadly, we ran out of time.
Chris Dodge
I had a difficult time enjoying the museum. I think, for me, it's because I had a hard time trying to identify the museum's genre/flavor/what-have-you. There's one paint/work right next to something of a different style from hundreds of years prior.
That being said, I LOVE that they make it free to the public on certain nights throughout the year to allow everyone to enjoy art.
Golden Rule
A fitting collection for such an excellent art school program. Nice balance of international, historically relevant exhibits- and student works. The layout and some of the display signage can seem less professionally coordinated than major museums. RISD shows a portion of avant garde irreverence and a dose of modernist thrift. It is an art thing, you either get it, or should learn it, and be in the know. Where Nataraja is dancing there is happiness; study of art reveals the essence of the human soul. RISD Museum expands solid foundation of technical knowledge and is also exploratory. Balanced, edgy, vital, confrontational, interesting - everything art must be
John Ferrughelli
Very cool art museum and I've been to several. No lines to get in, was not crowded at all and they had some interesting stuff to look at. They had art from hundreds of years ago and photograph type art which is recent. Place was clean and quiet which was great. Parking was tough to find since it is Providence, there is no parking lot. But once you find parking, you're good to go.
Red Fox
I ended up going on Sunday so I was free. Need to reserve tickets ahead. Plenty of different exhibits and a unique setup.
Cristian Loor
This museum is slightly confusing to navigate at first, but it offers an excellent diversity of artwork from many cultures and styles. Given its affiliation with RISD, one advantage this museum has over others is its abundance of student-produced work, which presents an excellent way to understand the issues important to young people today. Although the gift shop doesn't offer a wide variety of goods (mostly cards and glassware), most if not all of it is student-made and can serve as cute keepsakes of one's visit. There's a cafeteria at the entrance and an elevator that reaches each floor. Don't use the elevator if you can help though, and you'd miss the intricate sculptures and paintings that decorate the stairways. Helpful staff regularly patrol each section, and one of them even told me about a relatively unknown set of silverware exhibit hidden in drawers that visitors can open.
Fidel Escobar
So fortunate to live in RI where Art Thrives!!! As an artist I recommend going at least once a month!!
John Louie
Incredible Impressionist masters on the 5th floor. Many other delights. Your membership in your local museum may get you in for free, via North American Reciprocal.
Tom O'Connor
I had never been to this museum after going to school in the area, and decided the finally go. This is a really cool place to check out if you are in the area. The museum has a lot of unique and interesting places, and is a nice queit activity that you can do with others or on your own. There is a lot of space to walk and admire the work, and overall the museum has a very calm and quiet atmosphere. I would recommend this museum to anyone who wants a nice way to unwind, while admiring some great art work.
KC Michaels
A wonderful collection of various art pieces. The building has an interesting architecture too. It was partially under renovation when we visited, but they had a big collection of European art displayed in an "open storage" layout--"Intermission". The display seems somewhat haphazard as they are not organized by artist, style, or time period. There are no plaques identifying different pieces either. It was a very different experience than a typical museum exhibit, and we enjoyed it. I think this is only a temporary display until mid-2017 when renovations are complete and these and other pieces will be moved back to a more traditional gallery.
Lenny Abiuso
Near world class art museum. Surprised by the large collection.
Alyssa Sciortino
Great museum and free on Sundays!
Tong Chen
First grade art museum
Katriona F
The museum has a decent collection of historic pieces that make it worth admission. We enjoyed the Gorham steel exhibit.
We didn't enjoy the making history modern trend throughout out the gallery where politics and social opinions are inescapable. It just felt a bit forced on you. These pieces were more about the statement and less about the technique.
Justin Blau
I was surprised by the number of works from the most famous artists across many different eras of historical art. There is a little bit of everything, and not as crowded as the largest museums. Won't have the breadth of items, but you'll probably find at least one of something you're interested in seeing.
Deb Fate-Mental
Really enjoyed my visit! There are some fabulous works of art here. There are elevators and stairs. If you are into 18thC American material culture - decor, furniture, portraiture, etc. - definitely check out the Pendleton House section of the museum.
There is a definite emphasis on European art with several smaller galleries for Egyptian and Asian art that we went through. Didn't get through the whole museum though! We were there for almost three hours so plan a good chunk of time to take it all in.
Highly recommend!
SVR R.
I always enjoy coming to this museum. It's much larger than it looks and even has a small garden hidden within it. The temporary exhibits are almost always interesting and there is a nice variety of artwork -- so many time periods, styles, and forms. It's also a short walk from anywhere else you need to go, which is convenient.
Bill Boozang
Wonderful collection of both contemporary and ancient Greek/Roman/Egyptian! A great way to spend the afternoon
Lenny Abiuso
Amazingly good. I was surprised how big and extensive the collection was.
Kristina Elkins
Lots of cool art! They had a pollock and a van Gogh which was cool. Also lots of other interesting art and a nice student art section. The layout was a bit confusing but the staff were helpful. But sometimes i hate when museum staff just watch you 😒 …
Jose Soto
Highly recommend this museum 👌🏼 …
Georganne Shirk
Wonderful museum! It is like several museums in one with modern and contemporary art, a small but worthwhile fashion collection, PLUS an adjoining house museum with period furnishings. Sundays at the museum are even free! The historic area surrounding the museum is beautiful too. Make the trip to Providence. It is worth it!
Marcus Borch
Very cool museum. Not huge so it doesn't take hours to walk through. Some really awesome exhibits. When we went they had a mummy in display. The employees walking the floor we're super helpful and answered all of our questions. The gift shop is pretty pricey though. Skip by that if you have kids haha.
Luke Tsai
Art was very underwhelming, but it was free and the staff was great
Ann Balk
Lovely diverse art museum spanning a great range of artworks and styles. A must see in Providence. We spent several delightful hours there. I would plan about 3 hours at least for the visit. The floor plan, however, is a bit confusing with passages between different height levels and multiple entrances and exits to the same area. The "floor map" was no help at all. But the labyrinth-like layout adds to the sense of adventure.
Crystal Gulabchand
Great array of different pieces. Each exhibit is unique and put together in a way that's friendly to the eyes. Came across some pieces that I never expected to be in a museum in our smallest state. Impressive gift shop, as well.
Mitch Marcus
Fascinating museum. You must remind yourself as you explore the various rooms that the focus is not on a particular culture or time period, but on design itself. At times you are looking at traditional art fare - paintings and sculpture. At others, mass manufacturing process. The museum is somewhat difficult to navigate. Make sure to pick up a map and guide.
San Francisco
Nice walk, cool stuffihht come back in a couple of years.
Debu Tante
Fantastic world class museum! My first visit was 3 years ago. I was amazed by the collection. I was naive in thinking that a college museum in a small city wouldn't rank with the likes of Boston's MFA, but it does! Wonderful collection.
J-Rocks!
Fabulous museum with a great variety of exhibits, I particularly enjoyed seeing the various dresses and some of the wonderful paintings by old masters. I was blown away to see a Van Gogh here, not to mention Picasso, and my favourite: a walk in the meadows by Monet.
There's lots too see, it's well worth a visit.
Joseph Chow
Admission free Sundays. Excellent customer service. No flash photography allowed in the museum.
Mike Klubok
A solid good museum with a good collection. The focus is largely on furniture and we enjoyed the Todd Oldham collection. While this collection ended last week, you will not be disappointed by the other exhibits. Plan on spending 1-2 hours here and it certainly is worth it.
Note that if you plan on visiting and you're able to do it on a Sunday do it then since admission is free.
Alicia Yang
They have alot silver stuff, and old thing from 1800s and 1900s.But it was boring to go here. It is interesting to know new things there but comple mins it get bored.
Sandi Hamad-Ebrahimpour
They have a lot of original work here in their impressive collection. Not crowded and easily accessible. Free on Sundays and some Thursdays.
James Kosinski
The RISD Museum is one of me and my daughter's (10yo) favourite places to go together. There's a wonderful collection of classical and contemporary art to view, great student shows and often activities that allow her to go from observing at to creating it. Tip- Sundays have free admission for the public. This offers a great way for people that might not otherwise be able to easily afford experiencing art the ability to do so. Now to start saving for my daughters tuition since she likes the museum so much she wants to go to RISD to study. 😁
Mary Beth Garhart
Great museum to go to if you want to get through the whole thing without spending an entire day there. The layout is somewhat confusing, but an overall enjoyable time. There's also a cafe inside if you're looking to grab a drink while you're there.
Cheryl Campbell
We started on floor 6 and worked our way down going between the two buildings that form the museum. We particularly enjoyed the Egyptian exhibit, then we realized most people are there for either Contemporary Art, the great impressionistic collection, or the European Masters. We particularly enjoyed the decorative Arts as well, since it's nice to see the history of craftsmanship in New England reflected within the furniture trends.
Jennifer Pewtherer
Really great little museum and free on Sundays!
Lori Willis
I visited the RISD museum on a Sunday morning. There is free admission on Sundays. What an absolutely incredible museum this is. So much to see! There were many college students there with their classes sketching and discussing art. It was a great experience.
Kat Cloutier
The upper floors are great! Really cool to see the sarcophagus
Amy Macedo
We are so.blessed to have this museum in our city. It is very convenient, affordable, and manageable. There is a wonderful selection of art, while being a small enough size to manage in a half day. Take advantage of their Sunday discount to go as often as you want!
Alec Loudenback
This is a really nice museum with a number of really significant artists throughout the museum. They also often feature student and alumni work... and RISD produces some really great artists. If you like art, it's a must see for Providence.
Brandon “Bob” Van Wart
Great place to visit and view art from great artists. The subject matter ranges from different time periods, as well as some great contemporary work that gets rotated around. Some of the work comes from different countries, but overall the walk through is marvelous. They usually rotate the pieces out every month, but major sections like the Asia and Egyptian sections remain the same. Although, they removed the mummy because of ethical reasons, so that's really the only change there. They have a large wooden Buddha that takes up a big part of the room, too. I believe that's in the section between Asia and Indian works. They also feature student work from the university which is refreshing to look at since it's from rising artists.
Tova Reiter
Wonderful collection... Don't miss Rodin's Balzac on the 4th floor bridge or the exhibition on Shahzia Sikander. Free on Sundays, advance registration required.
Stefanie Rozek
The RISD Museum is a nice jewel tucked away on the RISD campus in Providence. I can't believe I didn't check it out sooner! The museum is decently-sized (a bit smaller than the MFA, but still big), and they have a good range of collections varying from ancient/Middle Ages art to modern/contemporary pieces. I was surprised that they have a good handful of Impressionist paintings (even a Degas and Van Gogh), and there's lots of period furniture and clothing if paintings, pottery, and sculptures aren't you're thing.
When I went on a Friday afternoon a fe hours before closing, it was surprisingly quiet--I thought I'd see more students--and the person who works the front desk was very helpful in pointing us in the right direction. There's a lot of great art to see and plenty of fun places to wander. Definitely will go back!
Dixie Sampson
We're so lucky to have such a gem in Providence. The variety here is surprising for a museum it's size, and there is plenty to see. Kids under 10 will be bored, but that's par for the course for that age group. There's always something new to see, or something I didn't notice during my last trip, so the museum always feels fresh.
Tyler Yep
Cool exhibits, but I would have wanted to see more of the student art pieces. Felt like it was trying too hard to be a museum with everything. That being said, the paintings in the great room were really nice.
Edward Fielding
The RISD Museum is Providence's premier art showcase. The collection has a wide variety of art from paintings to furniture with two galleries changing for shows. Collections of furniture and fashion provide the public and the students of RISD majoring in these fields an opportunity to see what has come before. There is a cafe and gift shop with books, jewelry, and objects, some from RISD alumni. Free admission on Sundays and special events such as chamber music on weekends. The museum is not overwhelmingly large so you can view the collection without getting too tired. Make a day of it by having lunch in the city and talking a stroll around the historic buildings in the area surrounding Brown and RISD on College Hill.
Ali M. Gav
Lovely museum, its small size belies what a cornucopia of art treasures I saw here. Didn't expect so many greats. Everything from sublime Buddhist pieces (including one of the largest Buddha statues) to cool, Swedish minimalist furniture ....to textile and fashion pieces ...famous paintings by cezanne, monet, Renoir. All lovingly assembled, but not too overwhelming nor too many that they would wear me out. Cherry on top: it's FREE ON SUNDAYS! Don't miss this.
sean Jay
Fantastic museum, I was not expecting it to be so huge. The collection was incredibly diverse, from period rooms, to contemporary art, Egyptian relics, Japanese relics. It really demonstrates the loves people have loved all over the world throughout time.
Julius Shieh
Great museum with lots of interesting exhibits! It's free for kids under 18 and has a lot of cool galleries ranging from student artwork from RISD to historical exhibits from all around the world.
Xiaoxuan “Farrah” Wu
Got to love the museum here. It's small but full of surprises! RISD has a lot of famous alumni, and their work as students were precious and impressive. Gift shop has really expensive collection....
Chunfen Zhou
Situated between Riverwalk and College Hill, this museum has a lot to offer on its own. While not encyclopedic, its collection has some very interesting pieces of artwork, such as a paint box from Egypt and a palanquin from Japan. Also, interpretive labels are informative. As is the case with some other museums that have modern addition to old house buildings, however, its floor plan is not straightforward, but probably not to the extent of being confusing.
Tinatin Surguladze
This is the best fine art museum in RI.
Jeff Blackler
I'm not usually into art museums but this one was fantastic. The amount of detail that goes into the products and sculptures is amazing. Spent a few hours going through the place.
Paul Fisher
The RISD Museum isn’t huge. The curators have used that to their advantage, though, by keeping a diverse, but very tight and high-quality selection of works. The collections span time and place, from ancient Egypt, China, and Greece, to modern works from around the globe, with additional focus on local and RISD-affiliated artists. There’s something for everybody here, and it’s well worth repeat visits, both to see new exhibitions and rediscover favourite works.
Hashtag Whoomp
I love museums. Especially this one. It probably only deserves 4 stars though. The current graphic art exhibit was worth checking out. The building is intricate and enjoyable to walk through. One of the best places to visit in Providence.
Emily Guerrero
It was like several museums for the price of one. A highlight of my time in Providence
David Kraus
My expertise in classical art is rather limited, but I do know what I like. Many interesting pieces. Other modern stuff that I simply do not get. It is worth a visit to see works by well known artists, and perhaps the next undiscovered.
Thomas Martel
Ive been to museums all around the world countless times, but every time I come back to Rhode Island it is almost a necessity to come here. I could go on and on as to why... but this place is a real treasure.
LAND ROVER
Super cool Museum you must stop at while ever in Providence Rhode Island very small City but this Museum packs a very big punch awesome are very unique pieces and a treat for every eye please go please go now

Great museum with great exhibitions. Everything is kept nicely as well.
shane leftridge
Meh.
Great works of art tucked away, while post modern/feminist/"help, help, I'm being oppressed" works given prominence. I understand this is a curator decision, so blame the either the curator or my art school training bias toward the classics for this review.
Sometimes they get some great works in for limited times. Only then the trip into Providence includes the RISD Art museum.
Erin
Great museum with awesome variety of exhibits. Oil paintings, sculptures, textiles, a real mummy, giant buddha. Nice little cafe offering unique breakfast sammies, knead donuts, coffee and more. Gift shop offers jewelry, post cards, tote bags and more.
Jason Schlossberg
Nice Museum. Old and new works of art. Sort of small, but very interesting to explore. Free on Sundays. It's in a good area of Providence that you can walk around and explore.
TAC AUGUST
Museum is ok
There was a woman who kept talking on the microphone about her art (part of exhibit) who was really super annoying
No order in museum. Mixed categories. Intentional?
Security was tight and scared us at times. They were hiding.
6 floors but floor 1 and 2 not part of the museum exhibit.
Randy Evans
We were lucky enough to arrive in Providence on the third Thursday evening of the month...when the RSID museum is free. So, without a concrete plan for the evening, we decided to puruse the museum before we went to dinner. Wow! What a wonderful museum. The museum is packed with treasures ranging from Byzantine art to Impressionists to British print works. We were only drawn away by the rumbling of our stomachs. The museum is very well curated and well worth a visit...especially if you are lucky enough to be there for a free Thursday night.
Sophie Snapp
An impressive collection with very interesting things to say on the museum labels. The Gorham silver exhibit is awesome! Their curation is top-notch. I will always return to see what's new and visit their permanent collection.
Tara Bourhis
Went to the fair here today and they had amazing stuff! It was a bit expensive so I didn’t get anything but I still had a great time looking at all of the artists work.
Viera Levitt
RISD Museum is a happening place. It has a phenomenal coffee place as well. Come during the gallery night or their Design the Night party. They offer free membership for RI based artist, very nice generous gesture.
Frank J. Portela
Under renovation but it is a hidden gem. It is a nice walk and they have some nice collections from some of the classic (Picasso, Monet, Degas just to mention a few). It is conveniently located that you can walk around and find some good restaurants in the area and if you are ambitious yo can walk from the Providence Mall. It is about a 15 min walk.
BEAR T
Pleasantly surprised by the amount of historic pieces they had. The building itself is a little confusing, where if you are on one end of it you can only access certain floors. Floor 3 is the best way to transfer to the next building. It gets rather hot on the higher floors, but they have free lockers where you can unload jackets and such. And speaking of free, go on a sunday or holiday for free entry!
Michael Gilpin
Good food. Good service. Great wait person. What more can you ask for?
J.L. Clemente
Most definitely one of my favorite museums of all time. Just visited for the first time and I was really impressed with the exhibits! Be sure to stop by the cafe for an afternoon tea or coffee drink.
Michelle
Went when it was free on Sunday (big bonus!!) and really enjoyed it. Lots of unique exhibits and very big, really easy to spend a few hours there! Would definitely come back when in Providence again.
Max Weiss
Although its layout is a little strange, the RISD Museum easily makes up for it with a vast array of works from numerous eras and movements. For the very reasonable admittance fee, I would definitely recommend the experience.
Ziqi Wang
Bigger than expected and has a good collection
Margaret
Expected to see beautiful exhibitions from students, sadly very disappointed. One room with very unimpressive art by RISD students. What are they learning? Surely nothing worthy that was shown.
The museum itself is beautiful but if your like me expecting to student art this is not it. Very sad.
Paulina Lawton
Beautiful museum! Beyond impressed with the quality of pieces, and the student artwork was impressive.
Adriana C
Lovely place, not very big but there are some very relevant artists' works I didn't expect to find there. Also, some areas are for showing the students' works and this is very valuable to appreciate the way they work and create.
kim Sojka
My kids had a fun time looking at all the different stuff
Traci Lawson
ranked one of the finest art/design schools in the world what can you say. Great instructors who are into the arts themselves in a big way. some world know in their own right. well maintained buildings in walking distance to downtown Providence,RI. it has the best of all worlds. near Brown University. Has some of its own stores and shops. Students from all over the world come here and you have to have a lot of talent to get into this school. a lot. If you have talent in the arts, contact them and I am sure they will send you the info you need. Have a good friend who is an assistant to one of the school officers.
Heather Davis
There was so much work so packed in to each gallery, each piece did not have enough space around it. All of the work jumbled together.
The museum store had a single limited aesthetic, especially for the ceramics it choose to offer for sale. Most that I saw were simple, clean lines, one or two colors, slip cast or slab built, porcelain. As if only handmade ceramics that resemble assembly line Targetware are legitimate. The work on display was lovely, just as Targetware and Ikea ceramics designers are at the top of their field, but that's not the only aesthetic that should be recognized.
Get some pinched earthenware for an opposite aesthetic, and anything in between to round out the collection!
Ioana Andreea Botezatu
More of an art museum than a design one, but they have some remarkable pieces ( Van Gogh, Cezanne, Renoir, Monet, Manet, Degas, Gaugin) . Absolutely worth visiting. Plan to be here for about two hours.
Loren Witzel
Free on Sundays. Great exhibits. The only thing is wayfinding. The place is like a maze.
Meherun Sarder
Free on Sundays, it’s almost a maze with so many buildings and floors but loved the Greek/Roman and the Asia collections
Kent Shaw
I would say RISD Museum requires an approach unique to itself. At least from the standpoint of the modern and contemporary. Where other museums can be relied on for their canonical representations of 20th Century work and a few reaches into more contemporary work, the RISD Museum presents this time frame as a moving target with frequent rotatations, surprising contemporary pieces, and then backwards views at what it means for a museum to collect work in the 21st Century. There isn't a sequence of galleries to walk through, really. So it's more an exploration.
And for what I hope comes across as a pro pick, don't miss the gallery of student work located in the newer building. It rounds out the experience!
Loretta Waldman
Amazing collections. Well worth a visit.
Nick Albina
They have a surprising collection here. Original Monet, Degas and even Picasso. Unfortunately it's extremely difficult to navigate the museum. They have this convoluted series of floor locked elevators that only get to specific floors. For example, to get to the third floor from the entrance on the fourth floor, you have to take an elevator to the 6th floor, walk through half an exhibit, then take a service elevator to the 3rd floor.
Briana Fortnam
Nice museum with lots of student work plus work from other artists of many different types.
Joe Wehry
A handful of select paintings, sculpture, photography, furniture and fashion. The pieces are presented with a sensitive touch towards atmosphere. For example, in the gallery of Christian art, religious music was subtly played. A feat of architectural planning combined several old/new buildings together to form the complex. So bring a map, GPS or breadcrumbs to find your way through the galleries and back again.
Michael Schemaille
A charming, small museum with a diverse collection of works. Parts of the collection on display change regularly, so there's always something new to see.
Purple Velociraptors
Awesome museum to check out while in town. Lots of awesome art to check out from one of the too art schools in the world!
Yogi
$15 one time entry fee. If you want to return , repay to reenter. Floors 3rd through 6th have various themed design articles. Typically created by RISD architects or of era gone by . They've sourced some interesting articles too. Have a cafe on 4th floor. Can't take eatables or water during tour . Someone has to move between floors just to get to water. Some very good articles that stood out for me were Achilles killing Hector with Athena by him. It's chilling of one gets the context. Good Egyptian articles collection. The Japanese palanquin is one to look at and admire. Some of the paintings are great. The wooden Christ and buddha are extraordinary. Loved it.
Jessica Germain
Reasonable entrance fee (free with our local library pass), excellent permanent collection for a small museum, interesting modern rotating exhibits with good explanations, usually not crowded. Sometimes parking is a challenge.
Liz Hobby
A treasure in the heart of Providence! When the weather is uninviting slip into the enchantment of a room of the Impressionists, African textiles or a Dale Chihully glass chandelier.
Ian Aguiar
Sundays are free admission. The cafe closes an hour earlier than the exhibit halls. I wasn't able to find good parking nearby, but if you don't mind the hilly terrain walking from nearby was not a problem.
Lisa Paris
Lovely little gem of a museum.
Haotian Zhao (Arthur)
We liked the experience here, the staff are friendly and the collections are not bad
Blaise Pabon
Time. Bring as much time as you have. I only had 10 minutes and it was worth it. The admission can feel expensive, but it's the best show in town. Parking can be a challenge.
Raphael Rivas
This was a great museum and I loved the exhibits done by former students of the Rhode Island school design.
Blake Loncharich
I wish that I had more time to spend here. The museum is deceiving in how large it is. I would like to come back.
Yusef J
I had so much fun there. Loved their art pieces.
Kate Robinson
Seeing a Jackson Pollack up close was a dream come true. Amazing collection. Eclectic collection to include historical and modern art. Easy parking on street in area. We would go back repeatedly to appreciate the collections.
Loroline
Beautiful artwork and amazing place to explore the world of art in different forms. Definitely would recommend for those who love history and art.
Marina Butusova
Great collection of arts....nice people around...beautiful area...good coffee
Chinmayee Shepal
Good collection of art of different styles from different countries.
Stephen Gillissie
The museum is kind of a hidden gem in providence. I know a lot of locals who have never been. It's a great way to kill a couple of hours doing something different. Lot's to see and it's free on Sundays.
David Storey
A unique collection of artwork, well curated and varied. An unusual space - several buildings from different eras, joined together. Lots of smaller rooms make for something new to discover around every corner.
Sergey Isayenko
Interesting museum to visit. Keep in mind, it's free after 5 pm, so that's definitely a selling point.
Chad Landis
We were passing through and stopped for a free Sunday visit. I was impressed with the collection of old to modern. Not as enjoyable trying to corral a 4 year old. Older kids found some things of interest.
Liz Liang
Very nice museum. If interested in art productions, they have good displays and their staff is very welcoming and helpful. Parking might be difficult because it is street parking.
Huayuan Song
Not the largest art museum, but the exhibitions are great
Jack Ross
It's good considering the amount of space that they had. It does seem a bit unbalanced towards older works of art and lacks any feeling of being modern or contemporary in my experience. Worth a short visit.
Andrea Johnson
Free admission on Sundays! Brought my 9 month old and it was easy to get around with the carriage. I've been many times in the past and it's always a good time.
Lizzie Case
Way bigger than what I had expected with diverse exhibits. A pretty awesome gem in the city.
Bartosz Klemensowski
Great museum, I've taken a trip to Providence specifically to see it again. My only quip is that it's easy to experience everything in a couple hours. But it's not the museums fault.
Catt Small
A little challenging to navigate, but the artwork was beautiful and well-curated. I appreciated the diversity of works and the contrast between old and new artists. I'll have to come back!
Valerie Curtiss West
I will admit that I wasn't expecting the museum to be as good, or as large, as it is. An amazing place to spend your day.
Pete Lins
Funky layout, but great exhibits. Many impressionist paintings. Well worth the $15. Cafe on site.
Troy Durand
Amazing experience! Highly recommended for those who want to dive into the art world. They have amazing pieces and so much to offer! Also it's free on Sundays!
Roberta “Bobbie” Lazar
I visited during a special exhibit of works by RISD faculty which was varied, well displayed and enjoyable.
There was so much to see that I didn't even venture into their regular collection which I always enjoy.
Lisa Wolfer
I was pleasantly surprised at the extent of the exhibits. Sundays are free but I would definitely pay to see it again.

Robert Hills
This small "teaching museum" is a gem. The collection ranges from Cezanne to Diane Furstenburg to Newport Chippendale furniture. The interior of the Providence home in which it is housed is also noteworthy. Overwhelmed by big city museums? Then this is a welcome small alternative.
Aida Krisna
The RISD museum has a lot of great collections. This is my first time in a museum. I thought it would be boring but I was wrong, apparently I enjoyed it.
Andrew T
A very nice museum with varied artists and different mediums. Some older master's and new found treasures made it very rewarding.
Aurora Yang
Student Ticket available. A big museum with thousands of masterpiece. I will go there again.

Wonderful museum to spend a few hours, not a great big institute but the collection can keep you busy and being small actually help me to focus on the exhibit

Why is this museum not #1 attraction in Providence? Fabulous collection
