Reviews of Portland Museum of Art
It has a few great masterpieces that I really enjoyed. For my taste - a little too much of modern art. Would love to see more of older art (at least as temporary exhibits), photo exhibitions.
The German exhibit was excellent and intense. Recommend to visit at least once!
A few galleries were closed off for installation or repairs. Mostly paintings/2d artwork on display. Good group of contemporary to modern works, with a mixture of well known artists and some lesser. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great spot to stop in if in the area and an art junkie. Took me about 2 hours casually + gift shop.
I came here with my family all the way from NYC. This is a pretty small art museum. You can finish browsing the entire place (4 floors) in 45-60 minutes. A few artworks have caught my eyes and got me staring. If you enjoy art a lot, check out this place. It's a nice spacious area but I wish there were more to see for the $15-18 entry fee.
Beautiful art exhibits and plenty of room to walk around. There were places to sit all over, which was nice. The museum has restrooms in the basement level which was a little inconvenient but it was fine. A lovely clean museum, I enjoyed it. Only took a few hours to see everything so I didn't feel like I was missing out.
If you enjoy art then make sure you stop here. The museum is free on Friday 4 - 8pm and it was a happy accident that this was the time we arrived.
Lots to see here and keep you busy. From Monet to Picasso and everything inbetween can be found here. So glad we stopped and took time to drink in the art...
Got to experience Portland Museum of Art for free as we visited during their Fridays free period between 4-8pm. Had a really fun time exploring the exhibits and was overall impressed with the exhibits and art on display. Hard to beat a free Friday museum trip!
Really Enjoyable! We only had 90 minutes, and opted to view the permanent collection of American and European Art first; but stopped by one of the contemporary exhibits on the way out...
There's a lot to see!
The museum is spacious, has a cafe, and several temporary exhibits: You could easily spend a full-day exploring.
Great for a rainy day!
We stopped in this morning and had a nice visit. Saw the featured photography show than runs until January 2023 Lots of great work. Great way to spend Saturday morning.
We went here on a Sunday morning. It’s four floors of art. The art is well organized by theme and time period. I was really impressed by some of the art. They have pieces by some of the greatest artists. There’s a nice variety of artists and styles represented. I’d recommend taking the elevator to the top floor and walking your way down. There’s a gift shop and food and drinks available all the way downstairs. Easy to find and there’s parking near by.
Pleasantly surprised by this local art museum. The pieces featured included works by Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, and Monet. A gorgeous interior welcomes you on the journey throughout this lovely place. Price of admission is well worth the experience.
Portland museum of art is beautifully set with strong collections from classic to modern and a nice cafe which offers a yummy blueberry hand held pie. It’s not too big to enjoy in a few hours. Love the gay pride window too. Great way to spend a rainy few hours. Very worthwhile.
Free admission on Friday afternoon 4-8pm! I was actually surprised by their great collections! Would highly recommend checking this art museum out if you are around.
Beautiful exhibits and art from so many different eras and artists, I loved it here! People under 21 are free, but prices for other museum-goers are steep.
Lovely museum! Plenty to see but still felt a little pricey for the amount of stuff. Still, a great way to spend a few hours.
Fantastic art exhibits at a fair price! Love the building and the cafe downstairs is a nice touch. This place is perfect for a local visit with your family and friends.
No complaints! The Portland Museum of Art has really beautiful pieces with local artists and famous ones. I highly recommend visiting on Fridays- which is the free day for everyone!
Went in on a hot Saturday afternoon, wasn’t too busy. Beautifully curated museum that is easy to navigate.
At this point in their redevelopment you will probably be hard pressed to find the door but don't lose patience!! The staff and gallery are brilliant. A lovely collection. Read ahead of time before you visit so you know what you want to see but also ask staff members at each level as staff stand and look at the art for hours are ALWAYS the best to reference about what's in the collection and their favourite pieces and why! Definitely worth a visit!
WOW!
I absolutely loved my time in this museum of art. An incredible collection of artwork, and a beautiful building on the inside. Free admission on Fridays!!
Friday night is free. This place is a gem. They moved the pearl diver upstairs! Extra points if you want an artsy outfit.
This museum is small, but very well-curated. It can be viewed with moderate attention to detail (reading signs and things) in about 1 hour. I really liked that the overwhelming majority of art had accompanying text, usually 1-3 paragraphs, describing either the piece itself or the artist's body of work. Each distinct section also had a unifying description posted on a nearby wall, giving insight into the collection as a whole. There was a good variety of art on display. I was also really drawn to the interior architecture of the building, especially the wide variety of types of windows. I also appreciated that the museum is committed to accessibility. I didn't get a chance to eat at the museum cafe because I arrived closer to closing time, but it looked super cute too!
I really enjoyed my time here. The PMA has a nice collection of local and regional artists. The current exhibit with Richard Estes Urban Landscapes is top notch. There are just enough works from the European masters (Picasso, Renoir, Degas, etc.) to balance everything out.
For a mid-sized city, this is an incredible institution. With a variety of exhibits including photography to Old Masters to Contemporary to “Now” it was a great way to spend a half day in Portland.
There is a massive proposed overhaul that will only make it better!
The museum is free on Fridays, so we took advantage and planned our visit on a Friday. It's a very nice and well kept museum with some great pieces from well renowned and local artists (Picasso, Renoir, Monet, etc). Due to COVID, our visit was limited to an hour, but I could have easily spent 2 hours here. It's a nice way to pass the time on a rainy day in Portland.
Portland Museum of Art was an amazing experience. Came on a Friday so the entrance fee is waived. Honestly this is somewhere you have to go to experience. The various contemporary and modern arts were eye opening. Interesting facts, and if you like art, this a must see.
The Portland Museum of Art provides culture to the city and is a worthwhile visit. Even on the outside the Museum offers a sculpture garden. I particular found the person created from stone and wire an interesting one. Inside they have a number of quality pieces and have a fair number of sculptures as well. The museum is centrally located and easily accessible.
It feels good to be in such a beautiful building, surrounded by such inspiring pieces of art. There is a small food court downstairs if you’re into that. The art literally takes your breath away, some of it is so stunning. Ten for sure!!! Also you can’t beat the convenient location to all the great coffee shops, restaurants, and bars in Portland and the Old Port.
Spacious museum with historical and modern collections. There is a locker space to leave jackets and bags. We enjoyed every gallery as each had something exciting to see. Layout makes sense so you can work your way through each gallery and see everything. We will go back again as it is worth seeing new exhibits and also looking at favorites in the collection.
Good balance of modern and traditional art. A lot of the modern art is from local artists with a unique touch. They also have a Jazz brunch in the Cafe on some days. They also featured an "Art in Bloom" series that goes from musuem to museum. Really cool.
Very nice museum staff, we accidentally made use of the free Friday nights, not crowded at all, we were able to stroll through the museum with our toddler, taking in different types of art, with a couple of really great pieces.
Definitely recommend a visit if you have the time!
I give this place 5 stars..
Is a small place with a great collection, well displayed and the staff is very friendly and helpful...
Displays from modern art to classic art and some local artists have some exhibits, nice restaurant and is very affordable if you visit Portland, this museum is a must visit..
For a town this size, the Portland Museum of Art does quite well, with intriguing exhibitions and a clever use of space.
I attended on a free First Friday event and was heartened by seeing the number of attendees.
There is a gift shop with some theme-related gifts, which was clever, and the staff were attentive to the guests browsing.
A small food counter operates in the basement area, with beverage options (including wine and beer) and light snacks, but must be consumed in the basement.
Outside on the evening I visited were a number of sculptures, which were lit with such tremendous creativity and flair as to project immense shadows back across the museum.
Without a doubt, a small town cannot compare with the museums of Chicago, London, or Paris, but the Portland Museum of Art might be the finest in the region of New England indeed.
Can be boring for the young crowd. Prepare to stand up for a long time.
Place is full of pretentious people pretending to like some vague art displayed at the exhibit but in reality most were too abstract to make any sense of it.
We saw a mattress on the wall; sardine cans on the wall; a super huge canvas of white oil painting; a very huge brown feces like sculpture on the floor by Noguchi, and so much more. Bizarre but it was good activity to pass time before dinner just wear comfy shoes.
Came here free Friday 4 PM. Only wall displays were open (no workshop activities were open during these free hours and therefore you are not getting full experience of the museum - consider coming in during paid hours and check workshop hours offered)
The museum had master work exhibit like Picasso, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others. That was entertaining to see.
Security guard will follow and stalk you around (he scared the hell of my friend as we made a turn to the next room, the same man was following us from room to room in a covert spooky fashion) especially if you are the first to come in. Was not a pleasant experience being watched at as if you came with bad intention (may I suggest a museum hidden camera instead with minimal intimidating guards).
Free for any students age 21 and under. 4 floors of art. There were several Monet's there when I went as well as some other paintings by well known artists. Museum staff was friendly.
Experience classics like Renoir, Wyeth, Reynolds, Cassatt, along with Native people's artwork , and modern art. Spacious and able to handle a crowd. Free lockers and coat room along with strollers and wheelchairs
Very nice and well balanced collection, including many pieces with strong coonection to the state of Maine. Personally, I loved the works from artists associated with the Hudson River school of American ladscapes. And it was fortunate that there was a special N C Wyeth exhibit, who also has a strong connection to the state.
I could've watched "Scenes from Western Culture" exhibit all day. It was a mesmerizing chaos. There was too much snow on the ground for me to explore the sculpture garden, but it looked like there were several creative displays. Overall I thought it was a very nice museum.
It's funny but it's been a couple years since I've been in a regional art museum. Even big museum visits have been infrequent. I've been to Portland a few times now, this was my first visit. It was free on a Friday evening which was nice. The collection is pretty good. They've got a Picasso, some Impressionists and a good representation of regional art. They have a cafe in the basement but it was closed in the evening and is...underground? Also they have a good sculpture garden.
I was quite surprised by the huge and diverse collection, with works by Monet, Picasso, and Warhol figuring prominently. We planned to be here for an hour but ended up staying for two. While impressive, it would have been nice to see a section of the museum dedicated to local artists, especially the up-and-coming ones who need a venue to showcase their art.
The museum is housed in three interconnected buildings, two of which form the McLellan-Sweat Mansion, a national historic landmark. The other building, named after native son Charles Shipman Payson, was added in the 1980s and houses the main entrance.
Finding street parking was a challenge. After several futile attempts, we finally settled for the Spring Street Parking Garage a block away.
This is a wonderful art museum with a ranging collection of different styles and eras. A portion of the museum is dedicated to local and regional artists which is a wonderful touch and the museum provides some context to the local and regional cultural significance. I spent approximately three hours here on my visit and potentially could have spent more. I recommend making a stop when in Portland. It is a change of pace from other activities and has an excellent collection.
Excellent day at the museum. There was an interesting variety of art and the atmosphere was enjoyable. Select pieces displayed a phone number near by to call and listen to the a short narrative by the curator. There were ample places to sit that were well lit and comfortable temperatures. I highly recommend visiting PMA.
Nice collection of New England art and artists with interesting special exhibits. Make sure you visit the beautifully restored historic house where it all started (attached to the museum.)
What a treat. The museum now features free access on Fridays. Not sure for how long. Check the website for details. Wonderful to explore this beautiful museum and its collections.
Nice collection in a beautiful space for a small City. Friday afternoons seem to be free. Otherwise it's $18 per adult for admission.
Small collection of international artists but a very well designed space. If you are into museum you will not be impressed, but you will. Ot be disappointed either.
Suprisingly great! The flow of the exhibits is excellent, walking from floor to floor exploring the collection is charming. Mostly modern world, sculptures and paintings. Hidden away in the old building section is a pair of amazing Picasso vases! It is free on Friday nights, definitely worth checking out!
You can expect a very nice visit here at the PMA! It's a beautiful museum and can be savored in a short afternoon. They have a finely curated collection of art from several world-renowned artists, and some great New England-based artists as well. The special exhibits in the front gallery are always purposeful.
The PMA's collections feature a wide range of styles, so there's something for everyone to appreciate. Definitely worth a look if you find yourself in Portland!
Museum is worth visiting, I like the current David Driskell exhibit. Sculpture garden is pleasant.
A very extensive collection that provides a little bit of everything. The McLellan House section offers a unique atmosphere for viewing the portions of the collection on display there, as well as a scene of architectural history.
Wonderful small art museum with superb works of art. I loved it
We had a great time at this museum, it's beautiful and filled with priceless works of art, sculptures, etc. There were interactive displays as well. We got discounted tickets on Groupon and enjoyed a great afternoon!
Awesome. What a gem. Can't rate highly enough. Highlight of Portland. Memorable French works of art. Modern installations,as,well, good gift shop. A Picasso
We had a great afternoon exploring the museum. Some unique pieces as well as well-known works by famous artists. The attached historical house was also interesting and a great addition to the experience. In warmer weather, we are hoping to come back to visit the Winslow Homer studio.
Great space with some valuable classics and contemporary. Very easy museum to visit and make it through.. Laid out nicely and easy to stroll through and stop to talk or admire. Wjile more seating would be great there was a fair amount. I'd rather give this 3 1/2 stars over 4 though..but 3 isnt enough as it's worth the trip and I'd return.
Great experience with many floors of exhibits. I found a few paintings I may order posters or canvases of for my home.
One of the best museums I've been to in years. Highly recommend stopping in if your in the downtown Portland area.
Some very nice pieces although the place is pretty small. A real head scratcher as to why some of the modern art is displayed.
Beautiful museum, small and very manageable for an afternoon trip. Absolutely worth the visit if you’re in Portland.
Lovely museum with great art. Didn't expect to see so many high-class works from Monet, Matisse, Dega and other renowned artists. On top you will find many works of art depicting the surrounding landscape of Maine and the history of the early settlers.
Very friendly staff within a museum with nice architecture. The collection was okay however we are not breaking the bank at 15$ per adult.
Nice collection, highlights lots of Maine artists and really paints a wonderful picture (ha) of the state’s art history. Doesn’t take too long to get through.
Amazing artwork by artists such as Picasso, Renoir, Homer Winslow, etc. Free on Fridays.
The flow of traffic inside was very smooth. I never felt like it was too crowded.
a really interesting art museum with a lots of variety! very maine centric collection, which makes sense, so definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby! dropped by the cafe and grabbed some food, i found it reasonably priced and really good! everyone was really helpful and super willing to direct me to exhibits i wanted to visit and really keen on chatting about the art! genuinely lovely
Wonderful displays ranging in styles and eras of production with a focus on the natural beauty of Maine.
Last visited more than 2 years ago, and today's visit was much better. They have improved the experience 100 fold even though some exhibits were closed that day, I guess to save $$on heating costs (pretty smart of them if you ask me). I loved it, great paintings, great diversity, excellent helpful staff
Excellent art museum with a good variety of art from the 18th Century to present. Kids get in free, which is very nice for families, especially if you're not sure how long your kids will want to stay.
Friday nights 4-8 pm are free! otherwise you can usually find discount tickets on groupon.
Lovely art museum.
Great artwork, but, Monet and Matisse had SEVERAL works NOT behind protective glass. This is an issue when dumb people decide to touch it or worse. You can actively see the degradation of paintings because of it. Please if you go, ask the desk for a form to submit feedback, and PRIOTIZE art preservation!!!
A lovely collection in a super cool building. Nice to kill some time here, especially on a rainy morning.
The social distancing system put in place was really helpful and probably very precautionary. Lots of stuff to see inside. I liked the Picasso painting a lot. There's also a good collection of Native American creations.
Friday nights are free! Super great museum which has grown by leaps and bounds.
Great museum in Portland. Very friendly staff. Some great pieces of art that we truly enjoyed.
A small gallery with a world class collection. Four floors of modern and traditional works.
Had a great time here! I particularly liked the sculpture exhibit: New American Sculpture, 1914-1945 featuring Lachaise, Laurent, Nadelman, and Zorach. Also enjoyed the sculptures outside, especially Celeste Roberg's Rising Cairn.
I was at a conference and had a chance to go through and this place is amazing. Plus they have lots of good snacks!
Great experience for my family. We brought our 6 & 9 year old children and they were engaged throughout. The exhibits were well maintained as well as the building. The art was beautiful and well layed out.
Nice museum to roam around for a couple of hours. Sad we were one day early for the Noguchi exhibit, but there's still lots to see.
Wonderful museum to visit while visiting Portland Maine. Enjoyed Winslow Homer's paintings.
Decent museum with some interesting things to see. Some exhibits felt a bit underwhelming, but overall, it was worth the visit. Took about an hour to walk through.
We really enjoyed looking at all the different things they have in the museum.
Stunning!! Every Friday it's Free, there's no excuse not to go!!!!
Beautiful museum with a great collection! We thoroughly enjoyed!
Great place, friendly staff, and lots to see. Things are always changing so it's great to revisit. I highly recommend becoming a ongoing member!
Wonderful museum...the art displayed does a great job of representing the demographic of the American population without lecturing in a paternizing way. The staff was friendly and informative
A lovely, small art museum with well done collections. Enjoyed the special exhibit of up and coming Maine artists.
A great selection of New England artists as well as some more famous pieces. The staff was friendly and the museum was very clean! I enjoyed having a "big" art museum feel in a smaller location. I definitely recommend visiting if you are an art history buff like myself!
Nice casual museum. Admission was reasonable and $15. Interesting collections, a lot having to do with Portland history. They also had some impressionists and a Picasso.
Museum is adding new exhibition and top 4th floor is blocked-off, street in front is also under construction - would recommend post-poning your visit until they're fully ready unless you don't mind all that.
Wonderful! Small but great! Fun gift shop too
We went on a loosely guided tour to catch the highlights and Sue was an excellent guide and helped me see things I otherwise wouldn't have. Sue was very friendly and was happy to answer any questions about the pieces we saw.
A good use of an hour or two on a rainy day. Small museum. Scored a Groupon for $9.
As a disabled individual, I appreciate once again that the PMA lets visitors with electric mobility devices use them within the museum (not all museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, allow this). Visiting a museum is as much about evaluation and election--choosing WHAT work to spend your time with, WHAT path to follow through the labyrinth of the galleries--and this experience cannot be replicated with someone else pushing your wheelchair (many of us are not well enough to push our own).
The PMA's collection is strongest, in my opinion, in 19th- and early 20th-century art that has some kind of connection to Maine, New England, or the northeastern United States. There are several good Homers, from a variety of points in his career, and two fine N. C. Wyeth coastal/fishing scenes. There is a sublime Thomas Moran that must be among the most gorgeous pictures I've ever seen. The modern and contemporary work on the upper floors is, again in my opinion, less compelling overall, but still, of course, worth a look.
The museum itself, with its ziggurat design and upper galleries peaking down on those below, is always a treat to visit. The galleries are nicely scaled to the collection.
I do wish the price to enter were cheaper, but one can always visit late Friday afternoons for free admittance. The current North Atlantic Triennial is colorful and features works in a variety of media.
Free Fridays are great for something to do if you live in the area and want to do something different before grabbing dinner. Great way to check out the new exhibits they feature every now and then.
A quality museum with a wide range of art. It’s particularly nice if you can go when it’s not crowded - space and quire make it even nicer. I recommend it.
Incredible collection for a small museum. Well curated and accessible.
I go here for me art cravings every time there is a new show put up. They never disappoint and are in motion to expand their collection and experience. I wish their permanent collection would rotate more often, but their new featured artists are always 🔥. …
Guys I'm a photographer but not a artist, designer or anything close. However, I loved my first visit to Portland Museum Of Art. I was there with my friends and my 4 years old son and other children age 9 and 13 we all enjoyed being there. We saw different kinds of art. And we tried to use the Pictures Scanner that tells you about every detail of every individual picture, it was AWESOME! One of my friends is a artist so she kept us close to a lot things that we never thought about it.
This place have a little shopping area and there prices are not too bad.
They also have a café shops and a very nice clean bathroom. Go and have fun!
If your a tourist you should definitely stop by! They have a picasso! People 21 and younger are free to enter!
I quite enjoyed my trip to the Portland Museum of art. Spanning 3 floors and an outdoor sculpture garden, I saw contemporary art alongside historical New England relics such as scrimshaw. Of particular fascination to me while there was the Richard Estes museum and the screen printing work on display. Amazing stuff!!
The location is smack dab in the middle of downtown with ample parking around. I went on a Friday and it was free admission!
I thoroughly enjoyed my first time visiting the museum. Living just 20 minutes away I always out off visiting because I could go any time.
Well, I'm sorry that I waited so long. I'll continue to go at least a couple times a year as I know they bring in new content regularly.
Highly recommended!
It was a great day! We found it's what you make of it with your child. Best floor for our family was 3. The light display was most stimulating for our child. Lou Q.
Most of the art exhibits were local Maine based art. Cool, but very little diversity of art. Many exhibits were also closed, everything is either abstract or natural. Zero religious or classical art. For the price of the ticket, we were able to walk all the exhibits in under an hour. Not comparable to most art exhibits I've been too.
Museum with lots of art in a cool layout of a museum! Definitely a fun find! Got a good deal on Groupon for it!
An amazing art museum in downtown Portland. The variety of styles means there is something interesting for everyone. Highly recommend spending time here.
I went on free Friday so it was worth the visit. However if I paid the admission I would have been disappointed.
We visited on a day with free entrance, rather than $18 per adult. (This occurs every Friday.) Unfortunately, the fourth floor was completely closed off "due to social distancing restrictions," and the basement level (with the café and restrooms) might be uneven, as me and my wife both almost fell over a few times. Overall, the exhibits are nice, with some beautiful statuary, but I wouldn't visit on a day when admission isn't free (nor with children, as there's a lot of sexual imagery currently on display).
I really enjoyed my visit here. The German exhibition was nice but the main attraction for me was the piece by Daniel Minter!
Always a bright spot in today's world. The art displays are quite interesting and of course draw you in. A great facility with the added benefit of a very nice cafe.
great museum, contemporary and art of the last centuries, great visit
A great mix of classic art and modern, local works. I love that they have "free Fridays." Some of the older stuff is actually very surprising - I learned about John F. Peto's work here which is really great! The Richard Estes exhibit is really stunning also. It won't take you long to go through it, but it's a lovely little museum.
What a gem of a museum! The collection features international, big-name artists as well as a "best of Maine" art tour. Despite the small size of the city, this museum packed a punch. I would put this art museum up there in the top of U.S. art collections.
Nice local museum here in Little Big Town. Went recently on a Free Friday for a short but worthwhile visit, first in a while. Mainly just checked out their new David Driskell exhibition. Had never heard of this artist, even though he had a local Maine connection, and was wholly impressed by the quality and range of his works.
Nice collection of various types of art.
Good port in the storm as it offered us some dry space to walk before lunch.
One of my favorite art museums. Small enough to be unique and enjoyable for a day trip. Large enough to have some real gems in the collection. Docents are friendly and very helpful. The "highlights of the museum" tour is an hour well spent even though it barely scratches the surface of the collection. Kid friendly and accessible.
Portland is such a cute place to have a day trip and I love this museum! There’s fantastic ocean views and restaurants nearby too. Great artwork throughout the museum.
Had a great time. Decided I'm not a fan of impressionist paintings.
A wide array of artistic movements are represented in this space along with a strong focus on local artists throughout time. The artists' whose work was being displayed were diverse in so many ways; something that other museums seem to struggle with.
Nice place, but a LOT of wasted space. You can breeze through the entire place and see everything in about an hour, hour and a half. Some very nice paintings and sculptures. Small but nice gift shop. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I only give three stars because I feel the space could be used a lot better. Get some more art In there guys!!
Cons
As a Bank of America card holder, I wish I was able to get a free admission. For $18.00 I wish there was more variety in the museum.
Pros:
The museum is very nice and has beautiful pieces throughout.
I particularly loved the live music in the cafe to wind down and relax which is nice intimate touch
The customer service is friendly and knowledgeable.
Overall for a rainy day it was good experience.
This is a great way to spend a couple of hours. It's not too big - which can be overwhelming in a larger museum. The highlight for me were the painting collections with local scenes and/or artists. I gained a deeper appreciation for their subjects and periods.
It's a nice little museum, was expecting to see at least 3 Andrew Wyeth paintings but alas only 1. There are a couple of Picassos, Renoir and 1 Sisley..plus at least half a dozen Homer Winslows.
A must for art lovers visiting Portland Maine or nearby New England towns. Wonderfully curated!!!
Lovely art and a great atmosphere
They carry a great collection of art, sculptures and more. Surely a visit.
I love Romanticism and was surprised to find it here. I loved the Grant marble sculpture and the Dead Pearl Diver. Beautiful!
I also enjoyed the photograph portrait exhibit.
One star docked because I didn't like most of the art in the museum. But the stuff that I liked made it all worth it.
Great museum, with a variety of art from the abstract, to Impressionist, to classic. My personal favorites were the Monet pieces, and some stunning marbles. Absolutely worth a visit if you're in the Portland area; it's a great way to spend a few hours, the staff is inconspicuous but helpful, and they have some delightful collections. Also, Fridays after 4pm are free admission!
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Diana of the sea &, The Lotus Eaters were my favorites. Go check it out!
Really enjoyed my trip here. It’s fairly small and doesn’t take long to explore, but there are some really lovely pieces. Especially enjoyed seeing some of the Maine-related art.
They have a great exhibition on photography and some really amazing artwork, must visit for anyone new to the area.
Cool art museum with a little something for everyone. Easy to see everything in 2 to 3 hours. Fourth floor is closed due to covid. The sculpture garden outside is really cool.
We visited from out of state and on their free Friday evening which was wonderful. We were greeted right at the door and directed to their special exhibit. The museum was clean and orderly with plenty of space to admire each piece of art, and a perfect sized gift shop with pleasant staff.
Amazing pieces throughout the 3 floors available to us today. Was Friday and free entry after booking online.
Thank you for allowing me to see the amazing works of Rockwell Kent, Pablo Picasso, Andrew Wyeth, and so many amazing artists. Cheers
One of the few things I actually really enjoyed about Portland.
Great art museum, fourth floor is currently closed for pandemic precautions, but the other 3 floors have plenty of art to wander and marvel at. Well worth a visit.
Small, but good. Collection of 19th and 20th century art was good
Snuck in and took a look at all the art had a magnificent time, will definetly pay for the next time i go through.
The rotating exhibitions here keep getting better and better. You can even check them out for free on first Fridays. The staff is so friendly and helpful and the store is excellent, especially for a small museum. The permanent collection has some great Maine gems, and the space overall is really lovely.
I have an ongoing membership with them, which is about $12 a month for two people, I love going and visiting! Even when they don't change their exhibit s it's still very interesting, depending on your point of view you might see something different in a piece of art and it's truly spectacular
Today I came on free Friday! The art is very neat and it is very cool to look at. It’s nice reading the story’s of the art.
After many years, we finally made it back to the Portland Museum of Art. We had a fantastic time checking out all the beautiful works on display - some we remembered from our visit 10+ years ago while many others were new to the museum, or at least to us. If you are a lover of art of all different styles and mediums, this museum is sure to please.
The David Driskell exhibit is a must see
Great place to visit. Not as large as other museums, but you can definitely spent several hours there. Very good gift shop. Large number of paintings and many marble statues and glass works.
The museum is a must-visit spot. Book a room at the holiday inn in the downtown...you can then easily walk to the museum then head for dinner. The museum is easily accessible, plenty to see, and always something that strikes me deeply, aesthetically. So many stories in each work...always fun to revisit.
Nice museum with a variety of pieces. The current Katherine Bradford exhibit is fantastic.
TheThere are times the regular seating area in the lobby is replaced by some work of modern art that's fun to lounge on.
The gift shop has an eclectic variety of things that cater to all ages.
One exhibit changes periodically but I find it's fun to return to the other parts of the museum with different people, talking about the art in different ways. Sometimes appreciating it, sometimes laughing.
So much fun wandering through this space.
Great exhibits. Even my 7 year old niece enjoyed a lot of it. Was impressed by the variety of art. I tend towards the classics myself but found some of the pieces for the temporary exhibit expressed as constellations as really fascinating.
I love this art museum. My only issue was the security guard who followed me around. I know it was because I am Black. I told the director and she apologized and gave me 2 free tickets. It was upsetting but that made up the experience. The museum has a wonderful blend of exhibits. I often spend hours there!
NC. Wyeth exhibit is fantastic!
Enjoyed the paintings and different points of view included next to most of the pieces.
The museum is well laid out with an impressive collection on all floors. Brilliant gift shop too.
Really great museum with a variety of exhibits that kept us engaged for over 3 hours on a rainy day. Restrooms and a cafe are located on the lower level along with an auditorium that shows films and some interactive installation (most likely meant for children but still fun to participate).
A must visit if you find yourself in Portland. The museum offers exhibits from many periods of art history with several exceptional pieces by notable artists. You can also find an interesting selection of pieces created by local artists. The staff was friendly and helpful and the facilities were exceptional. Overall a great experience.
I loved it here, this museum has such a great assortment of art and so much of it with a local flair, it was great. I'd love to come back, it was such a nice way to spend part of the day, meandering about. Not only that, but they had so much artwork that moved me. That's not always the case when I go to other art museums. Let's put it this way, I found far more art here that spoke to me than I did at the much larger and more prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art, but then again, I might just be more partial to New England art being a New Englander. A painting of a moody lighthouse is closer to my world than a painting of Rome.
Amazing. Great collection. Was really cool to visit.
A lovely suprise. Went in without expecting much nd was blown away. The marble room alone. Worth the price.
Wonderful exhibits. Some are fixed while some are rotated to keep things fresh. Good layout for getting around. Finding parking during warmer months can be a challenge. Groupon often has discount tickets available. Didn't take long to get through entire museum. While most staff are friendly, some hover over your shoulder almost expecting you to breathe too strongly in the direction of any of the works. Very creepy.
Beautiful museum. Art from all over the world and famous pieces.
Beautiful museum with unique exhibits, amazing docents, and a neat collection of items in the gift shop! They also do a mindfulness "class" every so often, and it's a great experience! Definitely worth a visit!
The Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine is a place full of art treasures. From paintings by Winslow Homer to Claude Monet, to find beauty in every piece one beholds is obvious. They have sculptures by Edgar Degas. Also, you will find 6 rooms of life sized sculptures which we did not have the pleasure of seeing. The giant sculpture of Ulysses S Grant is mind blowing. Even the bathrooms have fine art on the walls.
One of the best art museums I can recall visiting. Not only were there excellent selections but the text illuminating them was actually interesting. Where many museums have dry text about unnecessary facts, or not much information at all, the pieces here generally have interesting info about the process, or stories about how something came to be made, or context about the creator. It makes a huge difference in the experience.
Great museum, interesting floor plan, lots of art to see. There is street parking, which is generally fine. However, finding the entrance to the museum might take you around the whole block. Make sure that you look around corners and down small hallways, there is art everywhere and some small wings of the museum might be easy to walk by without noticing.
Amazing! I visited for my first time and was very impressed. There are a lot of famous artists represented.
Absolutely exceptional. Everything from the lay out, the price of admission, free storage lockers with keys, the quality and quantity of art and the building itself, all of it was stellar. Highly highly worth the time exploring.
Make a day or at least an afternoon out of it there is a LOT to see.
I always love the space and light. I had to go today as the Clarence White show ended. I didn't like the lighting of the photographs,(too dark.) and found them difficult to really enjoy. I suppose young eyes may not have any issue, but I found myself having a little eyestrain! That was my 4 rating instead of 5, but it's still all quite wonderful. I enjoyed the layout, and changes made. A fine place to spend a few hours, and the sculpture garden was lovely too.
Great collection of artworks and super friendly staff.
Great museum the art is amazing and has a ton of variety
Small but full of beautiful pieces. Something for everyone!
Friendly staff, light airy place, well organised...just felt $18 was a lot for what was on show. A couple of Homer Winslow, minor pieces by some of the big names, a significant amount of the usual incomprehensible (if there is something to comprehend) modern stuff...just came away a bit disappointed...maybe if I'd paid $10 would have felt better. Would have felt even better if had got in free at the later time slot on Friday.
Bought a Groupon but when we got there found out that it's free on Friday's from 4-8PM. Very nice museum, there was a craft table & light display when we went. Nice way to begin a date night!
Really enjoyed art in bloom. Crowds not too bad. Lots of exhibits we hadn't seen. Great experience after many months.
A very nice museum, make sure it's on your to do list when you're in Portland. They have some great pieces, including Monet. It is one of the museums included in the Bank of America museums on us program, so if you're a Bank of America customer check to see when you'll be able to visit the museum for free. 21 and under are free.
Wonderful collection of Maine artists’ works, along w/some classics like Mary Cassatt & Renoir. We spent 2 hours and only explored 1 building. Many whimsical sculptures & paintings displayed in beautiful open space with cleverly inset lighting. Can’t wait to return.
“A Lovely Place to Visit and Relax”
A wonderful, relaxing and informative place to spend a few hours. Enjoy some inspiring art in a bright, airy, laid back place. Browse, casually through rooms and rooms of great art from many well known impressionist as well as Maine and Maine inspired artists. I really enjoyed myself.
A great place to visit while we were waiting to check in at our inn. Saw Under Pressure by Andy Warhol which was a treat and lots of different types of art like abstracts, landscapes and sculptures. Definitely worth a look.
They had a number of paintings and some "modern art" that I'm sure was curated by someone who's in the know. It was a 45min or less main building but you couldn't access the other build easily and after going past the 3 sculptures and trying two different doors we moved on.
Too good to take it all in in two hours. A little bit crowded but, hey, that in itself, speaks volumes. The shows now on display were unique. You could literally, spend hours in the N.C. Wyeth exhibit alone. Don't miss this opportunity.
Each summer the museum has a special exhibit and this year's was wonderful! I learned a great deal about the crafts movement and how instrumental Maine was in its development. I loved learning that iconic Dale Chichuly, glass sculptor has roots in Maine. Thank you for another stimulating afternoon of discovery
There were a few framed art pieces that were absent from their spots with no explanation as to why they were missing. A few sections were still closed off to the public. Overall a good experience. Free Fridays!
Went here in early October for the N.C. Wyeth exhibit. Was a good crowd and excellent exhibit. It was easy to navigate the museum, which had 4 stories with lots of interesting and diverse art.
This is one of the best art museums we have been to. Portland may be a small town compared to other cities, but their art museum rivals those in cities twice their size.
We went to free Friday which is 4-8 p.m. every Friday. It was wonderful. There is a great variety of artists and art mediums. Of particular interest were the quilts which recorded US treaties with Native Americans in the 1780s.
It was bigger than I imagined. I actually liked the architecture of the museum building itself more than the art. There are restrooms and elevators on every floor. The grounds outside of the museum is pretty nice also.
This art museum is not to be missed on your visit to Portland. A wonderful selection of both Maine icons such as the Wyeth's, masterful works by long gone artists, a lovely store, a cafe with delicious goodies, and a theater/auditorium. Don't just go on a rainy day, it's worth the trip every day! Visit their website for hours and special events.
Small but excellent collection and laid out wonderfully. If you love art you will just love this place. The building is a piece of art in itself.
Big focus on modern art so not really my kind of museum. Cool layout but glad we went on free Friday because I wouldn't have been happy if I had to pay when we didn't stay very long.
What a lovely art museum!! They have beautiful compelling pieces! You can tell it is very well organized and thought out! I could have easily spent hours looking through all the wonderful pieces that they had!
This is a very good museum for a smaller city. Friday evenings are free thanks to local business funding. You can also get free admission through the Portland Public Library circulation desk.
The specialty exhibits are often very good.
A wonderful museum with small, hidden gems. It's definitely worth a visit if you find yourself lucky enough to visit this beautiful city. I was fortunate to be visiting on Nov 17...Isamu Noguchi's birthday. The museum had a really great exhibit to honor his interesting career.
We enjoyed our visit and was able to see everything within a couple hours. All that our kids would let us stay. Be sure to check out the website for special rates. We went on Friday when admission was free. Loved the Monets. They are niw offering more deals for free visits. Check out their website for special events.
It was so good to be back in a museum! The Remington/Homer exhibit was interesting. Loved the notations on the walls by artists, historians, etc. It made the experience so much richer.
Amazing rotating collection with new acquisitions everytime I visit. Free every Friday from 4-8. Busiest Friday is always the first of the month. Locals can get passes for loan at most any local library (if your library doesn't have passes, if you ask nicely, they'll probably get some). Enjoy!
WAY bigger than expected, really awesome exhibits. We loved their displays and choices they made in even the wall colors.
The museum is well laid out and has great exhibits. I absolutely recommend going if you have a chance.
I hate to give it less than five stars, but the security guards made me super uncomfortable. I was there at almost closing time. There was a guard within line of sight non-stop. As closing time got closer the guard got closer to me and started tapping his foot on the floor. It was 10 mins to closing! At 5 mins to closing, he came over and said “we’re closing” as If I hadn’t just heard them say 5 mins over the speakers. So I left, earlier than I wanted. They made the experience much more stressful which is not what you want at an art museum!
My gf and I were delighted by this museum. Great walk about date place and enough going on to stay fresh for multiple visits it looks like. Check out the action at the cafe and movies as well as talks as that sounds like the place to be. Will be going back for sure.
Also if you have bank of america they are part of the free access program so flash that card if you got it I guess!
A much larger museum than expected, and a broad spectrum of works to fill it. There is an intimacy in the way some of the world’s most well known artists are presented, such that it felt to me like a gift to see their work.
The mansions are closed right now, but the main building still has a lot of interesting exhibits.
It is not my intention to hate on the museum but in all honesty it doesn't hold a candle to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston or even the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. They have a few works of art from masters, not many. If you can't get to Boston, recommend the Currier Museum in Manchester, NH.
Not much of an art buff but still a good museum. One issue I did have was one of the security guards was literally following me around the first floor. I guess I look like a world class art thieve. I understand you have a job to do but split your time with other people.
Best small museum I have visited. I believe our impromptu guide was Philippa. She was fantastic. They have a good collection of permanent items. Good value, a true gem.
Although it is small for a museum, I actually liked it quite a bit. There were lots of fun quirky pieces. The 4th floor especially is quintessential Maine. They also have a darling giftshop and a nice cafe with a neat magnetic building block activity meant for kids that my husband and I actually got a kick out of.
Worth a visit. An interesting collection of paintings from many different movements ranging mainly from Neoclassicism to Pop art. An enjoyable way to pass an afternoon in Portland.
Almost fully accessible- the top floor is not, but all of he rest is easily wheelchair-able. I had trouble finding the wheelchair entrance, but except for the heavy doors, the front door is accessible. A wonderful place to spend a few hours (free on Friday afternoon!). A nice cafe on the bottom floor.
I have always enjoyed my visits to the pma. Recently saw the bicentennial exhibit, magnificent! There is always something for everyone, children, adults those knowledgeable about art, those who enjoy it, those who have never been to an art museum.
Very cool museum with a decent amount of art from different time periods and influences
Bought our tickets on Groupon
They have lockers to place bigger bags
Restrooms are on the bottom floor only. Go before you see the museum.
They do have elevators so if you need one, they got you covered👍🏼
If you’re hungry or thirsty, they have a place for you on the bottom floor 👍🏼
This place is big. Space to walk. Space to step back and admire the art the museum holds.
They repurposed the McLellan House beautifully. It was the house but it’s been sorta modernized but still tells us the history of the McLellans & holds arts, a room of books, a room to learn in. Instead of just a place to sit, it’s a place that invites you to stay a little while.
They have a variety of art. Some are older and some are as recent as 2018.
I think they've read the previous person's review because I went a couple months back and was treated respectfully by the staff. They answered questions and they even pointed out other areas of the museum I had missed. I never felt that they stalked me or that they looked down their noses at me or anything of that sort. Free Friday nights are the way to go.
Exactly what a medium ish sized art museum should be. Not quite as large as the MFA or other similar ones but it makes great use of the space it has with many forms of art from local connections to pieces from world renowned artists. My favorites came from two current but limited exhibits covering the work of Ashley Bryan (especially his re-illustrations/creations of slave trade posters) and early 20th century photographer, Clarence White. Plus take advantage of free Friday evenings and free admission at any time for anyone 21 and under!!
A wonderful collection of art attached to a historic home. Definitely worth a visit.
Small and oddly laid out with narrow corridors on the upper floors, but excellent collection, helpful staff, consistently well thought-out exhibitions.
Nice place to visit while in Portland. Very easy flow, start on the top floor and work your way down. Clean building and professional staff that will answer questions. Fair admission price. I think I paid 15 dollars. I toured the entire facility at a very slow pace and it last about 3.5 hours.
It was alright. Kinda small and nothing too too impressive. Saw the Northern Exhibit as well. One person's piece was just gameplay from Far Cry 5.
The quality of the art pieces here are very good too and they have a nice amount of classical, photographic and modern art pieces. They have a permanent selection of Maine artists which is pleasant to see if you like New England or Hudson Valley paintings.
Very pleasant, friendly, and relaxing museum to explore in a few hours. Limited collection, but worth seeing some works you may not have seen by some significant artists.
Lovely museum with some great works.
I think they should give up the mask requirement for those of us that are fully vaccinated though.
It's just the right size for an afternoon.
Love the way its layed out. Some great paintings and sculpture
The Portland Museum of art can definitely feel drowned out compared to museums in larger cities, such as MoMA or the MFA, but for the space they have they managed to have a great collection from a wide variety of artists. Definitely recommend a visit.
Beautiful building. Small and easy to navigate. Great exhibits.
It's a small museum featuring American art. If you love art, you'd probably be pretty disappointed unless you have low expectations. It's an ok place to kill time, and they do offer several free hours--just check their website for them.
It is a bit confusing to get inside due to construction around it.
Wonderful collection of art. Went here on a rainy day since we couldn't do much more and I'm so glad we did. I recommend anyone that stops in Maine to visit this museum.
Brought the grandkids. The kids were a little too young for most of it but they did enjoy. The adults had great fun looking at the wonderful collection of sculpture and art. Well worth a visit.
Not a bad museum, nice through guide using the phone browser, friendly staff( i took a picture not realizing i wasn't aware and i wasn't crucified for it). some nice and valuable pieces, varied collection. Probably one of the best in the are
The beautifully designed building but houses a good selection of fine art with some interesting temporary exhibitions. Good location accessible by walking and near some local cafes and restaurants to enjoy after the museum.
This is a very nice museum for a small town. Not many great masters, but an eclectic endearing collection, nevertheless. Beautiful building in a nice part of town with comfortable walk and great restaurants. Will return.
Quiet, clean, beautiful pieces of art & lots to see
Lovely place, we so enjoyed our visit. Did a little mindfulness meditation at the Noguchi exhibit a staff person gave a little presentation on Noguchi and the Zen aesthetic, then we did a meditation. The whole experience was lovely.
Four floors of treasures! This museum is a beautiful place to spend a couple hours. It's a little pricey at $18, but worth it on a cold winter day in Maine.
A truly beautiful experience with some priceless art, and great options to keep kids engaged throughout the museum
If you like art I would highly recommend this place and it's in Portland maine downtown so once you get done seeing the art museum you can go and visit a lot of other tourist attractions and if your hungry there is all kind of places to eat and if you like shopping Portland has that to. So make a day out of it
Stellar museum. They have lockers for your luggage. Take your suitcases before a flight or train trip and enjoy!
I went on free Friday.
So it was worth it... lol
Portland is so cool. Everywhere is design firms or coffeeshops. Art is one of the essentials. It seems Art Museum loyal to this spirit. I love Klimt’s works. They got good pieces of arts.
Free Fridays!! Visited on a Friday evening for free and had a great time. Coat check and lockers for bags right when you enter. Food and drinks available downstairs. Multiple floors of varying displays. Local art from school students.
Very lovely collection. Do ask for admission fee waiver criteria. The help desk is wonderful. A must go for architects and architecture students as one of the beautiful creations by I.M. Pei, an iconic architect
Take the docent's advice and start on the third floor and work your way down, then past the gift shop to the other two spaces. Perfectly lovely museum, lots of Maine flavor and a rich collection overall.
This museum has some outstanding pieces in their collection. Well worth taking the time to browse. Gift shop and cafe are more than adequate as well.
Wonderful museum, in particular the layout is very well designed to lead from one section to the next - I was delighted to find a window facing out to the sculpture garden with descriptions of all the works.
I am not an artsy person and only went because it was raining and needed something to do that's indoor. We did end up spending around 3 hours here because we found an area where the had a notebook and some pencils that we decided to use for our version of pictionary. Atleast that kept us entertained for a little bit.
Very very awesome! If your under 21 you get to go for free! Why not???
Nice museum we went there today for free Friday 4pm to 8pm. I enjoyed the experience, love art, love that museums all over have different history for each area of the 🇺🇸 …
Not many pictures from today, but it was a good visit.
Amazing art museum with a great rotating selection, cheap memberships, and youth are always free. Great way to spend an afternoon, and seeing everything can take a few visits.
Informative guides, wide ranging collection, beautiful space, including the original old house.
They are very picky about taking photos. But they do have a large number of paintings. They do change their art work very often. Fun fact The Museum's collection includes more than 22,000 artworks, dating from the 18th century to the present. The PMA's collection features works by artists including Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Louise Nevelson, Andrew Wyeth and John Greenleaf Cloudman. The Museum has the largest European collection in Maine.
Love their connection to Winslow Homer. However, their collection is wide ranging, and the Museum is well worth a visit.
Lovely museum with a great collection of works.
Great museum A nice blend of pieces that weave through different genres of art.
I would definitely recommed this museum.
Great pieces of art!! Huge displays. My wife and I had a lovely visit! They are taking all covid precautions.
A small museum packed with fantastic pieces of European and American art. One of my favorite museums. It's small enough that it's not exhausting and I felt like I could really take my time at each piece.
Really nice variety within the galleries. Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere. Does a great job of encouraging guests to learn and interact with art.
If you are an art lover or not... You should still visit this art museum... Great art work and sculptures. Also a treat with Picasso painting they have..
Half of the art was just bad but mixed in all that were some good things. Most of it was just abstract art that had no color theory or composure. It's nice to go once or twice.
90 minutes of entertainment for 18 bucks. I'm glad I went. The marble statue of Ulysses S Grant was mind blowing.
A nice mix of beautiful artwork in a manageable space. I feel fortunate to live close by and can take advantage of free Fridays, when I can focus on special exhibits.
A solid gallery with an important permanent collection. Well worth the visit.
Beautiful artwork, with a few works by many well known artists (Matisse, Picasso, Renoirl, and a lot of contemporary work that is interesting, but not and miss in its value as "art". It's great, though, that they take a chance with the weird stuff, and snout just play it safe. Featured artist is Maine's Winslow Homer.
Actually a really good museum. The displays were varied and interesting and it was well curated throughout. I wish there was just a little more for the price.
Love it. Under 21 and you her free, they have students discounts and it's a nice place to spend the afternoon
Very nice museum, a good variety of old and new art. Worth a visit
Great place. The guard on the third or second floor was very rude to my two year old daughter and i felt as though wr were targeted on his floor. He certainly ruined our experience. But overall, i loved the place.
Beautiful art! Went as a chaperone for my son's school though, and unfortunately they sat us in front of ONE piece and talked about that ONE piece for our entire field trip (1 hour) kids and myself were a little disapointed.
I love art and saw this which was so amazing I cant stand it!!!
The Clifford Ross exhibit was fantastic. Also enjoyed the rest of the collection
Love that it's free on Fridays!
Nice selection always have rotating exhibits making it worth the visit
Small art museum with a great collection! I was happy to spend an hour here
Great experience, professional staff, Awesome Covid protocols (felt safe the whole time). The Security guards wear the brightest colored pants.
Very nice museum. Much better than I expected. Have a few paintings from the European masters. Would definitely go back.
I really enjoyed the paintings. I also was moved by the drowned pearl diver scupture, Andrew and NC Wyeth, Edward Hopper,Marsten Hartley and other students of Robert Henri. I also enjoy the off beat humor of Henri Magritte. Most of all, I was excited by the Managiary plywood carvings on 4th floor. I forgot the artists name but he died in 1977. Please forgive spelling I am pecking this out on phone.
Such an interesting postmodern american colonial revival building. Really beautiful gallery spaces. The McClellan house is a must! The collection of portraiture in the memorial hall is really beautiful.
Its free to visit on Friday evenings
David Driskell exhibit was excellent. Very good permanent collection for a museum of this size.
Wonderful! I will certainly go back. I enjoyed my walk up to and from the museum from the East Promenade.
The Homer and Remington exhibit was well worth attending. Excellent interpretive narratives to help in appreciating the works in their historical context.
Went in with medium anticipatuon, and I was blown away! Very cool museum, lots of exhibits but small enough you can do it in a reasonable amount of time (less than 3 hours)
Excellent museum. Nice building with good selection of legendary artists.
Great exhibits. The impressionist room was wonderful and you need to see the Monet and the Bierstadt.
I love everything about this museum. Check back often for new exhibitions, because they're changing the place up the next few months, and there always seems to be something new in here.
We really enjoyed the exhibits, and under 18 is always free. We'll definitely be back, there was far more than we could see in the time we had.
Moving exhibit of works from Maine artists during 2020. When I was there they had a floral-type exhibit going on that was lovely.
A quiet and reflective place to browse at your leisure, to take in the paintings, sculptures, and other exhibits. Ponder the time of origin and what the creators might have been thinking in what they convey in their work
Great place to while away an hour or two. Nice cafe downstairs, store (of course) on the 1st floor. Lots of history and a restored building next to the more modern site.
Wonderful Museum filled with a terrific collection. Classic works along with modern and contemporary works. Cool IM Pei Building as well. Worth the price
I went on a Friday. It turns free at 4, which was a great bonus-- had accidentally perfect timing. Collection has a bit of everything. A good place to spend a couple hours
Great museum. Bloom exhibit was phenomenal. Paintings we're beautiful, especially The Lotus Eaters.
There's a impressive collection at the museum for being a somewhat smaller place. They do an especially good job of getting good featured exhibits.
Was much better than I expected.
Some very good examples of American Artists and few paintings of impressionist, and post impressionist works.
Terrific works of art throughout.
Small but nice 👍🏽
World class art museum in spite of the fact that it lives in a city of less than 70,000 people. Entry free every Friday between 4 and 8 p.m.
Kind and attentive staff and docents. Where else can you see antique scrimshaw? Great local, modern artist, as well as, historical marble figures.
Go see unique things in the world. It is the only reason to leave the house these days. This museum is well endowed and wonderful.
Excellent museum, free on Fridays, otherwise rather high entrance costs for working families. Good variety of art & artists.
It was interesting to see how people lived in the past and compare it to now. The house was preserved well, and people were there to explain every room and it's history. I'm glad I went.
This museum takes art and community very seriously. I've always had an enriching, thought provoking experience with each visit.
Very good place with a great variety of such beautiful pieces! The kids love to come everytime. Thanks a lot
Small but well worth a visit. We saw the temporary exhibit on Haystack and it was lovely, especially the textiles.
Amazing art at this museum. It was such a treat to get to expose my son to some of the greatest artists in the world.
Beautiful Artwork, both new and old. Exhibits change regularly and local artists are featured as well as many others. A great place for locals as well as visitors to Portland.
Many great pieces. Many the same as the last time we were there, making harder to keep things interesting. Made me into a guide, looking at details and methods.
Not the best art museum I've ever visited, however, the collection of local works is pretty decent and the staff is knowledgable.
A world class museum in a small city. Full of modern and classical art. A vital experience of Portland, whether you’re a local or visiting.
If your into the history of Portland Maine then it's worth the $15 student, $18 Adult over 21, children are free anyone under 21
Excellent. Do not miss the digital led display in the lobby. It is part of a bigger installation now in process.
Excellent exhibits.
Nice combination of Museum and active Synagogue...current art exhibit and visit the Synagogue; too.
Terrific place to explore, even during COVID.
Who would have thought Portland would have such a great Museum. Locals and visitors should spend time here. I've been a member for years and always find something new to enjoy.
Great collection for this sized museum. Take the Highlights tour with a docent. It's free and a great look at the museum.
The first friday of every month is free! They have a great variety of art and a gift shop and also a place to get snacks!
Lots of cool art...
A must go for art lovers. Explore the sculptures and miniature art
Great museum. Perfect size, interesting exhibits, gift shop supports and features many local artists.
Lovely museum, easy walk from most spots in town, great ongoing exhibit w/major works.
We came here with family from out of town and loved the whole museum. Especially the Noguchi exhibit being shown right now.
It was very interesting! But after a while it can get a little bring I must admit... But good for learning about Portland History and seeing the art.
sleeper of a museum; good café and excellent exhibit that includes Monet, Cezanne, Picasso, Chihuly glass, and Winslow Homer of course. worth a stop....
Every time we visit Portland we stop at the Portland Museum or Art. It never dissapoints. There is always a new exibition and interesting artists.
Just had to visit and see the NC Wyeth retrospective, which was well worth it. Spans his whole career from commercial artist, Western influences and Maine artwork.
I felt like I was in box ,all I saw is secu
rity everywhere , they walking back and forth , I felt bad for them , I saw a naked picture for men and women that someone with his kids or family together will be embarrassed but over all was ok , not what I expected for the price that we paid
Best little museum in New England, except for Worcester Art Museum! Ask to see Haystack Mtn School of Crafts exhibit, and blue Hill Frank Hamabe collection!
We went and saw the Ashley Bryan exhibit. The kids I took, 13 and 7, were really intrigued with Ashley's drawings, his collages and especially his puppets.
Love the layout and the flow of the museum, going from floor to floor. Their art, many of which is of local artists, or of local scenery is just what is desired.
This is a really great museum. It emphasizes Maine artists but it has some Modern treasures as well.
A small museum with great exhibits. Definitely worth a visit! $10 admission with a student ID.
If on a visit , you should put this in your itinerary . small for an art Museum , but classy in my opinion
Lives up to its reputation. Excellent collection, great staff, perfect display. Don't miss works of Homer, Monet, Renoir.
Great Museum I spent a few hours here
The only problem is the bus tours Most of the Bus tour people must have never been to a museum No respect for others
Such an amazing place with amazing stories and historical items. Very rich experience of not only Portland's history but the world's.
A small museum with good painting.
Friendly staff. Very clean, good for a short stop by.
Beautiful museum. Enjoyed exhibits and cafe in lower level. Parking in that area is hard to find.
I’ve gone so many times and it’s one of my favorite things to do in Portland!! I highly recommend on a rainy day.
Full of inspiration and culture. Fridays are free for everyone, thanks to many local sponsors and supporters.
Great place, good finds!
Portland Art Museum was awesome.
I’ve always loved this art museum.
Beautiful artwork, simply incredible pieces, so much to see, easy to get lost in, well worth the admission price.
Nice variety of exhibits from paintings to sculptures to furnishings. Only takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to go through it.
I love our city museum! Always great exhibits and lots of inspiration. 💕 …
A great museum to spend an afternoon on. Free on Fridays when I went!
Art exhibits change regularly, diverse and interesting movie lineup in the theatre, lots to do in addition to viewing the exhibits.
I think this is a top notch museum that has beautiful artwork. I especially enjoyed the photography section.
A wonderful, unexpected, beautiful, part of Portland Maine. Thanks to its wonderful contributors for the facility and supporting the arts. Portland is very blessed for its presence.
The new exhibit of Maine artists is fabulous. I would highly recommend viewing it.
One of my favorite museums in Portland
What a lovely space and collection. If you have a reason to go see a film there, the theater is excellent and quite special.
Great attraction. A must visit when in the Portland area. Remington / Winslow special feature was superb.
Was a great museum, and had interesting exibits, and a nice varitey of artwork. Would happily go again!
extremely affordable and has two main exhibits to explore. Makes for a great stop to avoid the cold.
Tickets on groupon for two - $15. Student discounts also honored here. Wonderfully curated space.
Amazing collecting and friendly staff. I would guess that too few people in Portland are aware of this museum.
You can see the whole museum in one visit, but there is a lot of good stuff. Worth a stop.
It's great place to visit in the free Friday! The architecture in the building is great and the Marble is very impressive the other stuff is Meh
It was a wonderful experience, but not nearly enough time and, next time, I will say "Yes" to the sketch pad! Thank you, Roger, for showing me the way. :)
I was actually impressed for it being a museum in Maine! Free Friday evenings otherwise kind of pricey, I'll be back... but only on a Friday evening.
Well laid out collections. Enjoyed classic American artists -- Stuart, Homer, Sargeant -- as well as more contemporary ones.
Somewhat strange mix of art ranging from colonial to impressionist to contemporary. Very nice place regardless.
The collection is growing and the special exhibits are lively and worthwhile. Definitely worth a visit.
Great variety of art! The kids really enjoyed the visit & can't wait to visit again!
Really enjoyed the exhibits and the gentleman who led our tour was very friendly and knowledgeable.
This is a good regional museum with interesting contemporary art as well as historical pieces.
Snuck in here to take a look at their galleries there's a lot of nice stuff! Wicked awesome sculptures and masterpieces.
Really loved the 2020 installment. Beautiful building with friendly staff and breath taking art!
Wonderful collection, great for all ages, plenty of arts activities . Attention to sculpture is a special treat.
If you paint little monocles on the portraits you get to meet Stan the security guard. Insider tip: Stan's great.
Wonderful art museum. Surprising in a small city.
I was very pleased with the museum. Lots of nice pieces. The McClellan house was beautiful too.
We were there for the First Friday Artwalk night - fun to be jostling shoulder to shoulder with so many people enjoying the great collections.
Great regional collection of artwork, with a fantastic curated film series.
Used to go here all the time. Was free for me when i Went to USM. Loved the Picasso vase at the time.
Really good collection for a small city. Neat building. Got lucky and enjoyed a nice free tour when we arrived.
Fun exhibits and friendly environment.
I absolutely love this place. Great exhibits and films! Highly recommend!
Wonderful exhibits and great art. A great place to spend some time looking at art.
Love this space and exhibit
Beautiful museum with fine examples of Winslow Homer, plus a few other masterpieces including a Renoir.
very cool
Great art, people aren't constantly breathing down your neck if you stand closer to the paintings
Beautiful works of art. Use the Groupon! Started at the top and worked our way down. Definitely worth a browse.
A wonderful exhibit of Winslow Homer and Frederick Remington! Very insightful parallels, and some great art.
Great exhibits with tons of art pieces. Young or old, everyone will have a great time here
Great museum! We went to the N.C. Wyeth exhibition and it was fantastic.
The Art in Bloom exhibit was very well done. The staff was helpful and friendly.
Excellent. Loved it! Crystal queen of the life rings!
Very beautiful museum
Always check to see what's showing in the 1st floor gallery. Extensive educational programming, for kids and adults, movies and free Fridays.
It was such a pleasant surprise. Famous works and local artists in four different galleries.
Very cute museum, and great stop if you're a fan of New England art.
Staff here is wonderful, beautiful pieces of Art. Anyone visiting Portland should definitely make this a destination on their trip.
Amazing exhibits for such a small city! And fun independent movie showings and other events.
Went to Free Friday. Good variety if exhibits. Well situated, parking not good.
Diverse cross section of artwork, and the Homer/Remington exhibit was everything I was hoping for!
Great place. Very lovely exhibits
Small but with interesting attractions.
Very limited variety of art, especially if you're looking for classics, and SJW-type exhibits, if you're into that type of thing.
The Richard Estes exhibit is the best I've ever seen!
Amazing collection of local, American and international art, not overwhelmingly large. Intimate and easily navigated. Loved it.
I was surprised that there are some canvases of the world's famous painters. And of course you can also find modern art there.
