Reviews of Oregon Holocaust Memorial
Kimberly Lining
Quiet , somber , heartbreaking and beautiful. Bring some flowers or something to set at the wall for remembrance of all those lost. Please don't let your small children play and be loud around this quiet memorial.
Chris Shearer
What a moving monument. Ubered up to the Pittock Mansion from downtown then ran down the trails and up to Washington Park. Knew I wanted to visit the Sacajawea monument and the Lewis and Clark Monument. Was quite touched and taken aback with the Holocaust Monument. Loved reading about many of the facts then the entire backside were folks from the Pacific Northwest. What a touching monument.
Maurizio Franzini
I've visited quite a few memorials of the Shoah, but this outstanding monument in the lush and serene Washington Park in Portland especially struck me. The historical concise description of the Holocaust, etched on the left hand side of the main slab, conveys the incomprehensible dimensions of the worst European tragedy in history in a poignant, effective, heart-wrenching way. An attentive visit to this place should be a mandatory activity for anyone, in particular for young students. The educational value is immense. I could not help recoiling in deep tears, as once again I was overwhelmed with sorrow and shame for what was perpetuated to those minorities just barely eighty years ago. If you are planning a visit to Portland, OR,ake sure you set aside a few minutes to dedicate to this place.
Trent Tweddle-De Leon
Emotional location. The memorial is beautiful and it draws you in to really appreciate a horrible part of history.

Never make an excuse to not further your knowledge about the world's history. A great memorial for those during this terrible piece of the past.
Hannah Lonsdale
So powerful. Both the story and the sculpture really hit hard on why we can never allow such a thing to happen again.
Chris P
Beautiful use of space. Be sure to take your time and notice the details. It is a very moving and spiritual place
Jeff Downing
This is a reverant spot in the middle of a residential district. Some great sculptures that tell a story without the need for words. People that were there while we stopped by were repectful as well. Good stop on way to gardens
Dan G.
A truly memorable place. A place you should take your children.
Magdalena Herrera de Leon
A place to reflect on the atrocities of human nature!
Jodi Lansky
I found the memorial to be very powerful. I was in tears just walking up to it after seeing the baby shoe and doll etc. It was beautifully written and the messages on the wall were heart wrenching. It's very small, but definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.
Suco
Such a moving memorial. Make sure to read everything.
Lana Goldberg
Moving, heart wrenching, thought provoking. One of the best, if not the best, Holocaust memorials I have seen. Lost and damaged belongings in bronze strewn around the ground elicited quite an emotional reaction from the start. The writings on the walls were powerful and the history told was very well explained. It was succinct and powerful. It highlighted the importance of seeing the commonalities in all of us as human beings and the need to be there for one another. I left in tears. Definitely worth visiting this memorial site.
Melissa Love
I love this place. Nestled in forest park, very close to the rose gardens and Japanese gardens. This spot is worth a visit. But bring tissues because if you have one compassionate or empathetic bone in your body you will leave weeping. Outs a nice quiet place to get away from the crowds as well and very shaded. Very clean. It's basically a wall with a lot of stories quotes and names on it. All those people that we should take care to remember.
Rob Stoltz
A solemn place, very thought provoking. That there can be such beauty in a memorial of the worst of mankind, is paradoxical.
Debbi DeMarce
Sobering
Tiago Ignowski
Small but nice memorial!

I stumbled upon this while wandering around Washington Park, and the area brought a gush of feelings . . . the darkness of the subject matter juxtaposed against the beauty of the day made the stories I've read seem so real. I loved the recognition of the families in Oregon. It's hard to enjoy something so dark; but, the artist does such a good job making the viewer feel the raw emotion. I'd suggest all visit this beautiful tribute to the tragedy we strive to never repeat.
Tami Villalobos
I have lived in washington/oregon all my life, I started my journey to find Truth because i wanted to find my extended family and ancestors, I remember hearing stories of how much different things were and, about the racial segregation that was in place when she was growing up. There seemed to be so much vagueness in the history that i was taught in school, the history of Washington, and Oregons, it's historical monuments and the people, though so much talk around the rich history of historical places, the bits and pieces of this town. I had came to realize I didn't know if these stories lined up correctly, so much vagueness.. as I started adding this up, things I was told in school, the Bible and other books I had read, documentaries, I've seen about the Holocaust, one things struck me and stood out, it was that in all the Holocaust data i studied, the story was the same, they all had the same last wishes, they didn't want to be forgotten and at some point told a family member to survive this, and live to tell the story of what happened, they never wanted this to happen again, I had a deeper realization of how there was a very good chance that these people are our ancestors, I new they were mine, not just some people in a documentary, i decided from that point on I was going to honor my ancestors and never forget and search through the vast data and find the messages through the sound of silence , I knew they needed and wanted to be heard and remembered no matter how long after they were gone. Thanks for sharing Oregon Holocaust on maps, it is proof that everything hid in the darkness will eventually come to light

We stumbled upon this memorial while perusing the park. It is touching and relevant. I appreciate this being here and that the memories for those who died so tragically are preserved here. The perspective from the art symbolizes what was left behind by the people forced out of their homes. The bear was exceedingly sad but for me represented the children of the Holocaust.
Gabatha K
They had good props to tell a story. Very sad when you think about it.
Paige Liberski
Very nice memorial that made me tear up. My grandparents were in Poland during the Holocaust so it really hit home for me. Very well maintained. Bring flowers to set atop the ashes.
C Yi
One of the best Holocaust Memorial Ive ever been. With old bronze belongings on the path and the messages on the granite were all very well written. It is a must when you walk around Washington park.
Gary Wasserman
The memorial is a testament to the families of the survivors who, along with community champions, worked tirelessly for many years to make the memorial a reality. Of course it is also a testament to those who perished at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. If visiting do not miss the burial of ashes from the death camps under the large stone on the right side. Also make sure to walk around back to take in the names of relatives lost in the Holocaust by members of the Portland community.
Promode Kant
A small but excellent memorial for the victims of Nazi Holocaust. As an Indian who have faced countless holocausts at the hands of invading Islamic armies for more than 800 years beginning the eighth century, and again during partition in 1947 and in 1971 in East Pakistan, I felt this place is a memorial for the millions of Indians, too, who were similarly and repeatedly massacred.
David Stephens
On April 28th, 2014 I was walking around downtown Portland. When I came to Pioneer Square the names of all the children killed in the concentration camps were being read out loud over speakers in the Square. I sat and listened for quite a while. I felt very sad and moved by this so I walked to the Holocaust Memorial. I really felt connected to the people the memorial was honoring. It was heartbreaking and emotional to say the least. It was very poignant. Reading the quotes from the wall. The sculptors on the ground, especially the Teddy Bear, so moving. The artistry is amazing and profound.
Silvana Johnston
Very powerful place to visit.
Taylor Clements
The Oregon Holocaust Memorial is a dignified reminder of the horrors Jewish people endured at the hands of the Nazis. The littered detritus of a forcibly displaced people line the walkway to the main memorial which tells the story of the Holocaust. Underneath are buried the ashes of victims giving a direct connection to the event. I encourage anyone to visit to remember nearly 75 years ago.
Stephen David
Peaceful and moving, in already beautiful Washington Park. Memorializes everyone lost in the Holocaust with an emphasis on victims with families who live in the NW US.
Jack “Nick” Nicholas
Everyone should remember. A moving memorial.
Jasmine Harding
Went walking around Washington park and found this place. You see im not from portland, but I love reading holocaust diaries and studying it. But the qoutes and stories some had on the monument , I have no words. It really does touch you, some with tears and sadness. Many , many lives were torn apart. I can't imagine what it was even like.
Chris Ferraro
Quite moving , a great tribute to those directly affected .
tina sims
This is a very simple, somber place to pay your respects and reflect. It was very quiet, with everyone silently reading the plaques. It's very moving to see the items on the sidewalk. I would definitely recommend

Great memorial. Gives a real realist view of this part of history. Even thou it was extremely sad this let's people know that this really happened and was and is a big part of who we are today
Jack Sung
There are some statues of a broken violin, shoe etc near the actual memorial. Overall, the memorial is well maintained.

(Translation) A place that makes you stop and think .. and the exposition itself, and the elements of sculpture and the inscriptions on the monument taken from the diaries and memoirs of people who survived the Holocaust, seem to immerse you at this time and make you feel it all, immerse yourself in this atmosphere.
I think it’s worth visiting such places so as not to forget and not repeat such mistakes in the future ...
(Original)
