Reviews of Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine
Great clean location for young children. Some some aquatic exhibits, light play area, water table, makers area for crafting and wood working, play town indoors with props for kids. Indoor climb area and outdoor playground with a garden and sand pit. Older kids above age 10 may have a harder time staying engaged but perfect for 3y-9y and will keep them busy the entire play session. Staff is friendly and helpful as well.
Very fun. The most interactive part was 3rd floor. I think 2nd floor was more for younger kids and to play with friends. It was cool to see the art and culture area, but my 9 year old wasn't as interested. He did learn to write his name in Korean, which was a cool experience. Bathroom on every floor, which was easily accessible. They also had water bottle refile stations. There is no food in the museum, but they do allow bottles and water. We went 12-3 but only stayed until 2:30 and were definitely hungry, but we could have stayed longer with the water play area.
Such an amazing place to being the little ones. I bought memberships as a gift for my nieces and they beg to go here. The exhibits are all very well thought out. Always so much to see, touch, and learn. Plus they do a wonderful job of changing things up to keep them fresh.
We've also visited the theatre, which was magical. They have a clever sound proof room behind the seating area so that if your little needs a break or just needs to move their body you can still hear and observe the show without disrupting others 😊
The maker space is definitely my nieces favorite spot. Just lots of objects and tools to craft and create with, to her little hearts content. We've literally spent an entire block of crafting time here, let them clean up and ready it again, and then gone back for more.
Fantastic visit!!!
We loved all the exibits and the scheduled activities! The museum was clean, the staff super friendly and almost everything was in working order, which is rare at a children's museum!
The Veteran/Military family discount made this extremely affordable to visit.
Thank you for a wonderful day!!!
Great place to bring children! Id say 10 and under is best, maybe even 7. Our two daughters had a blast though! We have a 10y/o and a 1y/o our youngest had the time of her life while our oldest was mostly bored. Loved the little toddler section, as well as the aquariums! Theres a little reading room off the aquarium with a live beehive! Super cool! The splash room was the biggest hit beside the lightbright room! Overall it was totally worth the money! Did suck having to pay for parking but it wasn't outrageous, $2 per hour. Visit the website before you go and look at the discount section, most library's carry discounted tickets to a lot of places around Maine!
This was an incredible experience! There are a variety of activities, from a neighborhood where kids can experience different Portland locations to a science floor on the 3rd level where kids can experiment with water, light, and air.
Be prepared for your kid to get wet and bring a change of top for them! There’s also a quiet reading room and a nursing room for those with little ones.
Don’t forget to check out their productions at their fabulous theater!
This place is amazing! There are spaces for various ages. They had a room place for my infant to crawl around in. A “shoe-free” zone. Though some people can’t seem to read.
They had a water play space, among many other attractions.
They have a nursing room in the museum. And the theater also has a space that enables viewing and listening for someone or people who need space. Like to nurse, or are feeling anxiety with a sensory overload.
They current have two designated times for visiting. A morning session and an afternoon session. So if you get a ticket, try to go for the entire 4 hour session of exploration.
The activities peak the interests of grown-ups as well as children. The have a “calming corner”, where you and your child could hide way in a room with soft lights, and books. I know when toddlers and preschoolers start to get excited and have trouble controlling their faculties, they can decompress and then re-engage.
We will definitely be visiting this place again.
So much fun for our 6.5 and 2.5 year olds. There's an aquarium, water fun, a mini imaginary world with a firetruck, boat, train, kitchen and airplane. Small well padded play area for little little ones. Makers space to create something with paper or recycled materials. There's a climbing wall that is like a large crawlspace wall. So much education, free play and fun. Excellent place to go. I'd recommend it 100%!
My children absolutely love the museum and I love bringing them here! I thoroughly appreciate the nursing nook so that I can feed my 2-month-old in peace and cleanliness while my husband and the older kids are having a blast playing.
Really fun children's museum, ESPECIALLY the third floor! Bring a change of clothes for your kiddos just in case you spend any significant time up there.
Staff is also really nice. Seem to genuinely care about the guests. Special thanks to Angela today who enabled our visit!
P.s., get reservations ahead of time, especially if it's a rainy day and literally every other parent in the area had the same idea as you for going to an indoor activity...
Great place for your smaller children. I would rate it up to about 7 yrs old maybe 8. Tri-level hands on museum experience with lots of safety precautions and interactive areas.
Great place to take the Grandkids. Take a change of clothes, they WILL get wet lol. Gadgets in the water area could be built better so they turn easier and more balls needed in the dry area next to water play area, and MORE creativity in the lite bright room. Other than that...really great place
Great place to take your kids will definitely keep them busy! Alot of hands on sensory play 😀 we loved it !!
We love coming to the children’s museum! We miss certain things about the old location, but there is a lot to love about the new one. So glad they kept the air blower in the area for the littlest ones-very popular in our household. Our children saw their first musical here tonight and all raved about it afterward. Can’t wait for more shows!
We had such a great time here. My daughter was in heaven playing on all 3 floors. So many creative and different things to do there is truly something for everyone!
Nice location and the Staff is friendly! I think I took my girls at a bad time during the week it was extremely busy. I will visit again to see if we have a better visit.
We had a blast! The 3 hour block of playtime was perfect - enough time to check everything out and explore in-depth the things that captivated my children the most. They're 7 and 8, with very different interests. There was something for each of them here. Really well done. We'll be back!
Thanks to the wonderful staff at the woodworking center, my 5-year old discovered his love for building things. It sounds dumb in retrospect but it never occurred to me to let my kindergartener play with my power tools but immediately after this trip, we stopped by Harbor Freight and got all the tools he needs to have his own little workbench. Thank you all so much for helping him discover this new passion!
There are so many things to do here. So fun for kids young and old. Indoor climber, water play, motion ball pit, light room plus a mini aquarium. So good!
We flew in this morning from Florida and this was our first stop after some lunch. The staff are all so friendly and kind! Everything was clean and well cared for. My son loved the stop motion camera and my daughter loved the creative play area and she was pretending to be a doctor for the teddy bears. They both loved climbing in the downstairs vertical maze and of course everyone was enjoying the water play area with all the cool, creative toys to use. Very fun! I wish we had more time to explore.
Great experience for our 3 year old. Not your average children's museum. Great interactive exhibits and lovely employees.
Lots of things to interact with a play. Large windows with great views for adults who just wanna sit while the kids play. Go straight to the 3rd floor for the water tables. We tried to go outside to the play area but the weather came through so we stayed inside.
This is THE PLACE to take your toddler to. We had never been to a “children’s museum” before so we didn’t know what to expect. It’s essentially a large yet contained playground for kids and it was lovely. The place was pretty clean and it was easy to stand and supervise as opposed to running after the kid. I would highly recommend this place with toddlers.
We had a great time at the Children's museum. We brought 3 kiddos. We did reserve tickets ahead of time and have a kid with special needs. Since we have medical assistance we got special pricing so I highly recommend taking advantage of that if that is your situation. Great space for kids.
The reason I rate this 4 stars is because the place was packed with people to the point you had to wait your turn or just squeeze in with a ton of folks to play. I don't understand what the reservation does if you're still elbow to elbow with everyone. :)
My fault probably for going on Labor Day!
What a wonderful place for a toddler/child!
tons to see and do. It's very interactive and educational. There are tons of activities and a lot to see. Many Maine companies donated interesting items to exhibits, it was nice to see so much local support.
A Tip: Do Not Bring Your Stoller In.
You can buy tickets in advance and some sessions sell out, I assumed this meant it would not be crowded, but our session was so packed that our 18 month old could hardly enjoy anything without being overwhelmed with other kids grabbing items or pushing him out of the way. every area of that huge building was filled with people and their gear. perhaps going on a random weekday will be less busy.
We brought our 21 month old granddaughter to members day. Great time because it was so uncrowded! There was plenty to keep her happy and engaged. Such fun!
The staff are absolutely amazing and my daughter never fails to have the time of her life here ✨🥳 …
We purchased a membership and we go whenever we have the chance. My 4yo is endlessly entertained by the water exhibit and the playground outside (no matter the weather). The staff is always friendly and helpful.
The rebuild is great, exhibits are mostly great (somev things are already broken). The biggest issue is just that it is laid out in such a claustrophobic way that it's difficult to navigate as a parent, and it always feels like you are in someone's way.
All that said, the kids love it and it's a great time.
We had a really good time. I loved watching and learning about the beehive
It was enjoyable especially early morning when we arrived. As it got later it got really packed though so depending on your kids tolerance for crowds that's something to consider.
My kids have visited in different years and both my kids have had a good time. My son liked the first climbing exhibit where you can look out the window. My daughter liked the slide on the same exhibit. The spinning globe my kids liked. The fire truck and shuttle exhibits were popular. I actually liked sharing the aquatic touch tank with my kids. The camera room was ok. We didn't go to the theater. Very friendly staff. AAA discount available. Parking garage nearby. Reasonable priced.
Good way to entertain your children while in Portland. Four floors of hands on exhibits. There is a two and under section. Everything was generally clean and in good working order. Street parking and a lot next door make very accessible although Portland is an eminently walkable city. Recommended.
Having recently visited the children museum of New Hampshire, I was probably expecting more the one in Portland. The museum is on an old building but well maintained, all exhibits in working order and clean. Our son enjoyed the water exhibit on the second floor, the lights exhibition on the third level and the stage in the basement. If were to choose, would probably go to the one in New Hampshire instead of this one.
Great museum! My 6 year old loved our visit! Everything is interactive, the staff was so nice, and they are a part of Museums for All, which allows low income patrons a discounted entrance fee. Thanks for a great time!
We are from Mass, and had spent the night in North Conway. It was just supposed to be a night away to play on some water slides. My 4 year old ended up crushed and scraped up after a small incident on the water slide; so we had to find something else to do.
We were planning to do some antiquing in Portland. After reading reviews, we thought the museum would be fun for the kiddos.
With Covid still wreaking havoc on everyone’s fun, I was unable to purchase admission online. It kept saying there were limited spots available, but would not let me complete the reservation… we decided to stop anyway.
They were, in fact, booked for the day. The woman at the door allowed us entry regardless; for that, I will always be grateful!
My littles are 2 and 4. We stayed, specifically, for the dinosaur adventure and fossils. Before I continue, I should tell you that my 4 year old introduces himself as <insert FULL name>, Dino expert! Lol
I do regret not taking pics the whole day, but his dad did manage to snap this pic of the staff! They had gathered to learn about dinosaurs from my 4 year old!! It was awesome to watch and he impressed them more than me that day!
We will absolutely be back! It was so much fun and the variety of things to do was countless!
20/10, all day!!
Lots of things for the kids to do. Not too big but fun for kids. I give it 4 stars because it shouldn't be $15 a kid. Not big enough to justify that price.
Awesome place! Our 14 month old had so much playing with other kids. There are so many little activities for them! A must visit!
We had such a great time here! My 2.5 yo was elated with all of the hands on activities and the outside area with the water table and sand pit. The ball room was another hit. We could spend all day playing here. I wish we lived closer, but we were only visiting for vacation!
It was a very fun experience for the range of kids in our group (2, 4, & 6)!
We saw a play there 2 weeks ago. It was so much fun and really well done. Great experience!
Took grandkids (11,10 and 16 months). Geared for younger kids, I would take the youngest again, but the older ones were bored.
We love the new location - way easier to park and amazing playground and view! My 4 years old had a ton of fun. Highly recommended
This was such a great experience for my grandbaby while vacationing. He didn't want to leave. Loved that they do reservations and keep to a time limit.
Beautiful museum! The exhibits here are phenomenal. We've already ordered a pass so we can come back regularly! We also saw the play Blueberries For Sal and the production was outstanding! Fantastic performances in a comfortable theater. What a treat for my children to have as they grow up!
In case you are wondering, museum passes do come with theater discounts but no complimentary tickets.
Spent 60 $ for 2 adults and 2 kids
There was a discount for ordering in advance but I have no idea what the discount was. We were allowed 2 hours, from 2 to 4
On the second floor there was some vehicle structures that was okay at best.
My daughter (4) enjoyed the craft area. But the 3rd floor is where both my kids had a blast with the air balls and water park they had.
There were also some fish tanks with star fish and a few others but nothing extraordinary.
But in honesty, for the price we paid, it's not something I recommend doing often. I'm sure there is a pass but nonetheless, I wouldn't do it again
Very clean and well organized. I went with my 4 & 5 year old grandchildren and they were actively engaged for almost 3 hours. Reserve a timeslot because it is often full during popular times.
Really amazing children's museum. A lot of pretend play. My kids loved the climbing wall and the really nice outdoor playground. The best part as parents was a brewery/resturant and coffee shop within walking distance. It's right off interstate and don't have to fight the downtown traffic. We will probably go everytime we are driving through
I loved it and the kids loved it! There is also a children's theater there (tickets sold separately). Lots for kids to do indoors. They are still doing timed entry as of 8/22 so get tickets in advance.
We took our two granddaughters here and they loved it. Lots of involvement for all ages. Two days later, we took our grandson. He had a blast!
• 3 levels of fun
• still feels almost new
• super friendly staff
Great option for young families. I interviewed the Director on my YouTube (Realty Flannel Channel) channel and she had great info & so many kid options!!!
Solid experience catered to children. It was clean and the staff was very attentive and ready for the perils that come having tons of kids running around touching everything.
This was so much fun we will be buying a family pass for the holidays! Our kids are 1 & 3 and had a blast, and the adults had almost as much fun!
Great place for kids between 3 and 10. May also be good for younger age groups, although there are less activities geared towards younger children. Very STEM based, informative, fun, clean and well run with friendly and helpful staff, and lots for the kiddies to do!
FANTASTIC!!! we love the Portland Children Museum!! Very organized, have many opportunities for kids to enjoy. Some of my son's favorite area are: the firefighter 🚒 and fishing in the boat. We've never been in the theater area however that will be our next stop. Staff are so friendly and the place is clean. They have outdoor play area that we always get to play and meet new friends.
Keep up the awesome job 👏 👍 🙌
We love the Children’s Museum! We have memberships and have taken our son several times this year! He especially loves the fire truck and the water play area. This place has so many fun and educational things for kids. The staff is friendly, and the museum is very clean. I would highly recommend taking kids here for a fun morning or afternoon!
I saw my son jumping for joy today, literally jumping for joy at the water area playing with balls and learning how water could make them move. We loved everything! This is an incredible place for children! Very modern and bright and inviting all the way around. Thank you so much!
We had so much fun with our 2.5 year old. The giant water table was a big hit with all of us. The staff were all super helpful and friendly.
My only complaint is I feel people shouldn't have to pay for parking after paying for tickets. There should be something in place for a break on parking.
This place is lovely. It's not super big, so don't expect to spend all day. It's got a spot for the super little kids that my one year old loves. Definitely worth a visit.
great museum and pefect childrens theater production. ages 3 up, but especially preschool and young elementary. would go again and again.
Great place for toddlers and kids. Very crowded during the holiday season, but was fun.
This is a three-story wonderful activity center for children. A child can easily spend many hours there.
Very friendly staff, very child oriented. Fun very welcoming bright colors
It was overwhelmingly busy from the 1-4 session. I wasn't expecting there to be as many children. There were waits to do almost anything. My nieces (3 and 4.5yo) loved the water attraction, though. They could have stayed there all day. The three year old loved the light room as well... and so did I! Their favorite part, however, was the quiet elevator rides to each floor and the outdoor park. It did slow down at around 3pm, and my nieces didn't seem as intimidated to try things out. Overall, it was a fun activity on a rainy day and the girls were happy 😊
Can get pretty busy on rainy days or weekends. We are members and tend to go during the week to avoid most crowds. My 2.5yo enjoys it thoroughly. Love the ticketing system to keep capacity tolerable and manageable. We have been to a couple theater productions and enjoyed those, too! Look forward to being members for years to come.
Our 2 year old had a blast, we will most likely buy a members pass next year.
We were visiting Portland and decided to stop by. Our children loved this museum. Plenty of activities to keep the young ones occupied for hours. Very clean, friendly staff. Highly recommended.
Very fun could be cleaner and had a few unsafe issues for babies but staff was very receptive when I asked about these issues. Plan to go again especially to the new location hoping parking will be easier
I'm a nanny and I absolutely love this place. The infant area is safe and clean, filled with lots of different things for your little one to engage with. Staff is helpful and really nice.
Extremely crowded. Focused on pre-school aged kids through about grade 2. Frustrating for older kids because some activities aimed at their age group take a long time, and younger kids demand a turn. No blame attached to those younger kiddos, it's just hard for different age groups to share space in this popular and very crowded setting.
Very boring! Went with my nephew Revel whose 3. He had a lot of fun though. Not like I remember it in downtown Portland Maine. Really not worth the 15 dollar fee.
Went during the week and it wasn't crowded too much that we couldn't get around. But still had enough kids there for my 3 year old had plenty of friends to play with! For sure start from the third floor down. More engaging things up there than on the second floor. Our favorites were the illumination room and the outdoor play space. Big sand box and play structure to run around and scream for a while. She was exhausted after being here for maybe 90 minutes so plan ahead. I didn't see a gift shop which I appreciate so we can visit and not feel pressured to buy something every time we visit.
My child seemed to really enjoy herself. A great place to go during a rainy day. Lots to do.
People were very nice and there was a lot to do with the kids. They even have a small aquarium area!
Both kids love it when we visit this museum! They have an amazing climbing space, an interactive water play area, and other creative places to play. You will want to have a spare change of clothes after the water though because they will get wet and might consider water shoes...
Fun, smaller than some other Children's museums we've been too. Takes about 2 to 3 hours to get through.
The 3 hour time slot was prefect and kept the museum less crowded. All the different floors were really nice. I wish the tidal pool area was open for touching the animals but it was still cool to see them.
The workers in the building area were great! Erica helped my son use a bunch of the tools and was so patient with all the kids.
It was a great place for young kids but very crowded on the weekend.
Wonderful facility. Extremely clean, bright, and engaging for children. The staff were friendly and helpful. The children had a wonderful time and we are excited for our next visit. They offer membership packages, so if you intend to visit often I would suggest considering one to keep the overall cost down.
In my opinion, parking was the only thing that detracted from the trip but I won't pin that on the museum. If you're coming on a busy day, be ready to hunt for parking. All the nearby parking seemed to come with an hourly rate, so expect to pay for that as well.
We make a stop here on all of our trips to Portland. Their exhibits are so fun and the place is very clean and neat. They have lots of fun things for all ages! Would highly recommend for anyone with kids!
My 7yr old grandson had a great time. My 13 year old grand son had a good time. It is more geared to younger children but still some fun for older ones too.
This was a great museum for kids 12 and under (My kids are 5-years-old and younger). The highlights at this museum for me was the water play exhibit and the power tool/hand tool workshop. I have been to many children's museums throughout New England and this museum is unique for that reason.
Let's talk a bit more about the museum exhibits....
Water Exhibit (2nd Floor): The water exhibit is very fun, even for adults haha. Just make sure to bring a change of DRY clothes because your kids will get wet like mine did (including myself). Talk about the ultimate water table experience, your kids could easily spend 30 minutes in this exhibit alone!
Tool Exhibit (3rd floor): I love the fact that my child can finally learn how to use a screwgun and power drill with the guidance/supervision of the museum staff. Plus, safety is a top priority for the staff. So they will keep your kids safe and ensure your kids will have fun placing in screws and nails into wood. This tool set includes teaching the kids how to use a hammer! Haha, don't worry, it is safe (even with their tiny delicate fingers).
Toddler Exhibit (2nd floor): There is a toddler area (3 years and under) where the little tots can climb cushioned stairs and slide down cushioned slides. My youngest loved this part the most and so did other toddlers too.
Climbing Structure Exhibit (1st floor): Rainy day for your little monkeys? NO Problem! They have an indoor climbing structure where you have 100% visibility with your children. Unlike other museums, where your child climbs to the second floor and your have to go chasing after them (cough cough, Bangor,ME/ Boston, MA Children's museum!) My kid was on this exhibit for 30 mins! The exhibit is a kid magnet! They love it! Kids love to climb!
My honorable mentions are the outside playground structure and the animal exhibit on the 3rd floor.
What a great museum! Definitely one of the best I have been too. Money well spent! I will definitely be going here again. :)
My mother in law and I took my 7 year old son, my 1 year old twins and my 6 year old nephew during February vacation. The facility was very clean, plenty of space for the amount of people there. Plenty of room for my double stroller! The two boys went through the first two floors quickly but once on the third floor they really had a blast! My only complaint would be paying ro parking... with charging $15 per person( even my 1 year olds)Olds, parking should be included.
It's clean friendly and fun for all ages. My girls are 9 and 15 and want to come back.
This museum has a variety of different educational activities to simulate a growing mind. My 3yo loved the lobster boat, the aquatic animals and the light exhibit. Lots of independent activities as well as guided ones.
Firstly I want to say that the museum is an essential part of the Portland community and I think it’s great to have. The facilities are clean and modern and it’s relatively easy to get to. The staff is awesome and the theater is a major upgrade from the old one. During covid having a membership has less value unless you’re someone that plans a visit weeks ahead. The old setup made it so easy to just go on a rainy day or when time allowed. However that’s just the way it is in these weird times. Also, I feel they could’ve gone farther with some of the exhibits given the space they have, but again there are still some fun elements.
My issue is more with the setup at Thompson’s Point. Firstly, there is no signage from the highway to the museum, making it tricky to describe how to get there- even with GPS. Secondly, the parking situation while ample, doesn’t account for the $33 ticket you incur on a Sunday- rules which differ from the rest of the city of Portland and isn’t really made clear when parking there. Of the 20 or so cars I saw parked in the lot around the museum, 15 had tickets on their windshields. If this is the rule, I guess it’s cheap, but ok- but it really makes the museum experience a bummer when you get a ticket on a Sunday. Please add signage. I’m happy to alter the review since again, I value the museum as an essential piece of this town.
Took one of the littles here for the first time for her fifth birthday and she had a blast!! I am so excited to see what they do with their new location soon!
So, I love the children’s museum and I love the staff there always, I’ve been bringing my son there since he was a baby and he is six now. However I can’t help but totally miss the old museum. It was our first time being over to the new one and the water play addition was sweet, and the aquarium area was nice, and the playground outside was nice too, but we definitely miss all the art work in the stairwell, the spaceship, the car station, the tree house, the farm area, and the icecream parlor.
But we will always be a fan.
The museum is fantastic and my 13 month old loved it. There is stuff for all ages. The employees were very friendly and informative. Be aware that you do have to pay for parking even though it is parking only for the museum. I believe this is the city of Portland's decision and not the museums. As of right now during covid you need to order your tickets in advance as they are controlling the amount of people visiting.
Spectacular new location. The water tables and makers space were the highlight of the visit. We stated until close, on the way out my daughter saw a fossil being put away and the staff stopped to show her them and explain. It was amazing.
Awesome experience. I brought my 7-year-old, 2-year-old, and 8-month-old brothers there, and there was something for everyone to do! The boys loved the water play area and enjoyed all the hands on experiences!
Great experience! Our son LOVED everything. Especially the water room!
My kids loved it. There are so many activities for them to do and the whole building is very clean.
Lots of interesting things for children, maybe through about 12 years old. Good mix of fun and education.
Too expensive, especially since I'm just watching my kid. Shouldn't charge $15 for the parent. Too crowded, makes some things impossible for the kids to do.
Our 2yo had a great time. We used a library pass for a discount. The front desk folks were friendly and helpful. Recommend bringing a change of clothes for the water tables.
Thank you!
Generations of family fun always a special thing to bring someone here for the first time. Big part of my childhood that I really enjoyed. Glad I could show it to the Next batch of little faces.
Wonderful play area for all ages of children! Helps them build their minds through play!
Absolutely incredible experience- a must see. The staff were kind, accommodating- overall phenomenal. The exhibits were interactive and great for all ages.
My son loved it. He's just shy of two. This place is definitely geared more towards ages 3 and up i would say
We had a blast, amazing variety of fun activities!!!
Less for school age children than the old museum used to be. The farm is not here. The water works are nice and new attraction. We definitely missed many of the hands on experiences of the old museum. Great for children 1-5. Parking nearby. Paid.
First time at the new location. My daughter loves the indoor water exhibit on the 3rd floor. We had a good time and I loved watching my daughter have a great time.
Really well done for younger kids. Not really a place for a 12 year old, but for a youngster you'll have to drag them away. Almost everything is hands on and interactive.
An awesome way to sneak in some learning for your kids (they'll think it's just a lot of fun!!) Lots of imaginative play opportunities. Crafts.
Family restrooms. Efforts made to improve accessibility.
Great place to bring young children. We couldn't keep up with our 5 year old Granddaughter. I do recommend bring a set of clothing
The water experience can get the kids very wet. We didn't do the arts and crafts, just so many other things keeping us busy. Addison's favorite part was the firetruck-house. That whole area had a train with conductor hat and vest for the kids to use. Mini air port with luggage. She played in the bear care doctor office, again some play clothing to put on. The lobster boat was enjoyed with a lobster trap to haul up and the bouys to play with. I really can't describe everything....you just have to go!!!!! Safe and clean!
We had THE BEST time. We didn't get to play too long bc we only came in for the last hour or so but it was SO worth it. The exhibits are clean and the staff are very kind. We will 100% be back.
A few influencing factors:
- We're members
- We're grandparents
- We believe in learning through play.
While the top floor was fantastic, unique and totally what we were expecting throughout, the rest of the museum didn't live up to the buildup for our family. We expected more cutting-edge, creative learning but, in a number of ways, mostly found a well-done, attractive, play space that was cute and "Mainey."
Children will always love climbing into boxy mock-ups of firetrucks, trains and and boats and our grandchildren loved every minute but we felt like more could be done to make the area more educational or realistic and less of just a play place.
Another example is the outdoor playground. It is very nice and certainly sufficient but it lacks any sort of wow factor. At some nearby city and town playgrounds, with free access, our grandchildren excitedly pull us into their discoveries. There was none of that though they did enjoy jumping from log to log in what was called "The Building Area." A thematic play structure, a tie-in to children's literature, or maybe some multicultural aspects would make this area fun and educational.
The first floor includes a giant climbing structure that is not the common plastic tubes of play structures but multiple platforms allowing children to climb from one to another. Our grandchildren (5,5, 4 & 3) enjoyed it but were ready to move on after only a few minutes. In the former museum they played with the large, foam building pieces until we had to pull them away. That popular area did not make the move to the new museum.
In total, our expectations and hopes were too high. We hoped for maybe some interactive displays about climate or renewable energy. We hoped for the more cutting-edge, interactive learning spaces we've experienced in other city children's museums like Pittsburgh or Atlanta.
The live bee hive exhibit is fascinating to watch but it loses something in the design because the children cannot see the bees coming and going. There is tremendous potential in this room to add tactile displays of honey comb, explainations of what the bees are doing, how they seal the honey inside, how honey is harvested, how we can help protect the bees and on and on.
From what I understand, the children's theater space is wonderful. We look forward to seeing a production there soon.
The building is beautiful. Paid parking is abundant and nearby. There is much for children to do and enjoy such as the very-well-stocked Makers Area for arts and crafts. There are even dining options right there on Thompson's Point.
The new Children's Museum is a wonderful play place for children. A family of 4 can expect to pay $60, without tickets to a children's theater performance, and spend 3-4 hours when time limits of 3 hours are no longer in place.
I am thrilled to see that families on limited incomes have full access at only $3 per person just by showing their EBT card! So often lower income families are locked out of museums and the arts by prohibitive costs. Kudos to the BOD for being inclusive.
The children's museum is a strong start with tremendous potential for future enhancements and development. Congratulations are due to all who had the vision, courage and determination to make it happen.
Go! You WILL have fun with your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in a bright, new space that allows children the freedom to play and explore.
I brought my 3 year old granddaughter here and she had a great time for 1.5 hours after which she was exhausted and fell asleep on the ride home. The place is small but was not crowded on a Friday afternoon during school vacation week. Lots of creative hands-on activities for young ones. Adults mostly sat around looking at their cell phones while the kids entertained themselves. I had a great time little-people watching.
Excellent new space. They do engage in covid masking theater for children against basic science regarding cloth/loose masks, but aren't jerks about it. Really glad to have them in the area.
Your kids will enjoy themselves, they probably won't want to leave. It is located super close to the freeway so finding it is not difficult if your traveling from out of state. Great way to break up a long car ride.
4-yr-old got a kick out of it. 6-yr-old may have started to age out. Reminded me of some of the indoor play/education places that BLIPPI visits on his show.
Had a wonderful day with my family here. Worth every penny!! Will definitely be going back again soon!!
This museum, albeit a bit cramped, has a plethora of fun installations. My daughter's favorite was the train station and the airport and the ability to put real luggage into the train and onto the luggage conveyor belt at the airport(super small though). I was excited about the new location as finding a parking spot was difficult at the old one and it always took a lot of time to circle the area and find one. I was a bit disappointed that the parking under the new museum was smaller than I was expecting. Some sort of barrier and a scene was put up halfway through the road so cars had to drive in and do a U turn one after another until able to turn around and try and find a place. I hope the museum will ensure the barrier gets torn down and people can park and go in. Right now they require reservations due to covid and parking was already tight! Overall 10/10 for all the areas in the museum. 5/10 for cramped space, 10/10 for bathrooms.
The kids had a wonderful time. It's a great place however, I think something needs to be done about the parking situation. I'm sure there were alot of unhappy people who came out and found parking tickets like myself who had to pay $23.
Great place, don't go for opening though!
We went up from MA for our first time and got there for opening. All the other parents had the same idea. If you go later, it won't be nearly as busy. Our 10 year old enjoyed it, even though she wouldn't last there as long as the others. Our 7 year old had so much fun. Our 6 month old loved all the children, loved watching everything going on, and loved watching balls seemingly float in there air as a jet of air held them suspended (cool toddler area!)
Well definitely be going back, at least with the 6 month old when shes a little older.
Brought my daughter for her birthday. First time for the both of us it was awesome. Definitely a place we both want to go back to.
If you haven't gone to the new and improved Children's Museum and you have children, you should go and check it out. There is a place with a water table so if you kid loves that stuff bring a change of clothes. You and your kids will have a blast with learning
Great place for young kids. Lots of activities to keep them busy for hours.
Great for the kids. My son always enjoys himself. It could have more to do but still worth the trip.
The kids had a ton of fun, and there was lots of activities for them. The prices are really good. We'll becoming back.
This is always a fun visit with the kids. It is not the largest museum, but they manage to pack a large amount of exhibits, events, and fun things to do within. It spans 4 floors with varying age groups throughout, including highlights for my kids that include regular theatre shows (that are interactive/allow participation), crafting activities, and a small stream with flowing water and toys to play in. My daughter especially likes the room with balls that can be placed in blowers with tubing that takes them to several different areas. Recommended for a half or full day adventure with the kids when its cold/wet outside. Bonus points for several bars and casual places to eat within a few blocks.
All kinds of stuff for younger kids to play with and explore. Not sure what age it's marketed for but has ball pits, things to climb on, large foam shapes, play fire truck, and a few live creatures to look at. My toddler had a blast but my 9 year old was a bit bored. She said it was a lot more fun when we went a couple years ago.
What an awesome place! A beautiful new building. We watched a play based on the story Fredrick. We had a great time. What an amazing addition to Thompson point 🙂 …
To crowded. My 5 year old was bored. The small play was good
I had a blast with my grandson! Very nice place and staff was great.
This place has so much for kids to do. It’s a life saver when the kids are stuck at home and the weather stinks
One of my favorite children’s museums of the six or so I’ve been to. Parents/caretakers seem to actually be paying attention to their children. Lovely, well-designed, locally-appropriate areas—a farmers market, a lobster boat, a forest area. Also a great exhibit on the Vietnamese new year(as of 12/17) that my 19mo loved. There is an area for small toddlers/babies but unlike a lot of other kids museums we didn’t feel like we had to stick to that area for our son to avoid getting run over/finding something interesting. Really well done.
Great new location! Tons of space. Nice "light room" and plenty to do for a few hours. Remember to pay for parking.
I wasn't impressed. We've been to the Children's Museums in Boston, Dover, NH, and this one in Portland. This one is our least favorite. Our kids are 6, 4, and 3. The ball room was a hit, and the pretend fishing, but that was pretty much it. They spent a few seconds at everything else before quickly moving on. It also seemed like there were no exhibits that worked properly or had all the pieces. The place was a mess, with no employees tidying up at all. We drove over an hour to get there and were pretty disappointed.
We love this place! The Children's Museum is a great place too play and learn with your little ones that are 10 and under. The museum is full of hands on play and lots of useful little bits of information in each exhibit.
Plenty of things to do for little ones!
If your kid is into dress-up, this place is top notch! The staff is very friendly and accommodating to the needs of patrons. Kids are entertained and there are educational opportunities throughout the day (staff posts a time schedule and encourages patrons to snap a photo on their phones for reference); announcements keep you aware of what is up and coming.
Great place for kids!!!
Always a pleasure, the Children's Museum has exhibits and activities for all ages to enjoy. My oldest can ramble and climb, pretend to drive a fire truck, race car, even a space shuttle, while my baby has a safe toddler area to explore and play with toys and scarves that float through the air. The touch tank and mountain stream are always a hit, and they both marvel at the camera obscura projecting images of Free Street in a darkened room. Purchase a family pass and enjoy all year round for a very reasonable price!
Highly recommend to anyone coming through town, especially since they're moving locations soon. It's a really neat space for kids of any age with a variety of activities. Few better ways to spend an afternoon with little ones during the winter when there aren't as many spaces for them to run around!
Great day trip. 4 floors of fun including the diner and theater stage in the basement. Go outside to interact with a local author's story. Great kid science teaching for kids: live animals, space shuttle cockpit, world cultures with giant globe. This one should keep the older kids entertained almost as long as the little ones.
Great staff and a good place to spend a couple of hours with kids. I went with my 10 year old and 3 year old. $100 for a year family membership is a good deal. You can bring food and eat downstairs, parking can be tough but nothing a little patience or walk doesn't solve.
Great place for kids to play/learn and adults to enjoy being parents. Plan to spend several hours here. There is enough to occupy your child all day. Parking is insane. But you get 50 percent off at the deck near by if you validate. Such fun!
Our Two-year old loves this place. Seems pricy, which means it's a very rare treat. First Fridays are always deeply discounted tickets, and I'd recommend waiting for that. Another great tip, take the elevator to the top, and work your way down. The ground level is always packed! Don't forget to visit the outdoor area too, my kiddo loved the water feature and just wouldn't leave. Older kids (6+) seemed kinda bored, FYI.
Great place for children to explore and play. My kids are 2, 4, and almost 7 and all three were engaged for hours. The littlest loved the climbing structures and ball pit, while her older brothers were fascinated with the pneumatic tubes and the cones demonstrating the Bernoulli effect.
Bring your 3+ year old child.
Stopped in for a visit with our 16 month old child and had a great time. While they have an area for the very young children there was not much in it for our inquisitive daughter to do. While too young to climb on some if the "big kid" play equipment she was able to interact with many of the other educational displays. The medical area with stuffed bears, the L.L.Bean flowing stream, and the patio garden/whale pond were the highlights of the museum.
The best children's museum in the area. We're from NH, took an hour drive up and stopped by after reading the reviews. The place is AMAZING! Compared to the Children's Museum in Dover NH, there's more to do for baby & toddler age. They use the space and design it in a way all ages can enjoy. We went on a weekend so it was a little packed but even then, the indoor park with slides, baby section (large) that's padded everywhere and the second floor had a lot to offer. Overall I feel you get more for the money here especially if you have toddlers and babies. Wish it was closer to us! :)
This place is amazing, it has three floors of tons of fun for the kids. We spent the whole day there, the kids did not want to leave. The bottom floor has a theater for pretend play, the second floor has a section for infants and toddlers. The third floor has a reading room and a tree house among other things. The price of admission is worth it.
What a blast! Great day for my 5 year old!
We always love going here. We have been going here for years... Both my kids love it (My boy's 11 and my girl's 7.) and that's rare lol. But it's beautiful. And very informative and it's above all Educational. For both kids and adults. It's not really expensive if ur a smaller family but you pay per person. It's 3 floors and a basement and an outside play area of all kinds of stuff to learn through play.
A great place for children of all ages! My one year old had fun with the stuffed chickens in the farm area and watching the bees in the beehive, but there was tons of stuff that he'll enjoy as he gets older. We will return again and again for years!
This place is amazing! My son had so much fun at the blackbird exhibit. And the playhouse was perfect for my 4 year Olds first theater experience.
New museum is awesome for kids with something for all our kids. The 1 year old and 3 year old loved the balls, touch tank and the water area. Check out the bees!
Super place to bring toddlers! So fun.
Amazing place to take young children. Essentially two floors of fantastic immersive experience, including an indoor cedar jungle gym loosely based on a fairy castle, a two story tall treehouse, a play-stream inside a forest, a realistic spaceship cockpit, and a real beehive under glass.
Parking can be a bit of a challenge, street parking a block or so downhill is easier than finding parking on the same street, or on any blocks north (ie Congress St or into the busy section of town).
Not so much a museum. More of a very advanced playground. Our little kids lived it. But our 11-year old felt she is a little too old for it now. I think she had a good time. She just expected a museum. Still a very good place to visit on a rainy day.
My 4 year old loved this place! They have a big fire truck with a fire pole which my son went down a dozen times. Plenty to do for 2 1/2, 3 hours. It's bigger than the Dover, NH Children's Museum And I thought there was more to do. I really like how Maine centric this museum is. Camping and lobster boats is cool for my kids to see since we live in TX.
It's a smallish children's museum that spans four floors. It gave the kids something to do for the three or so hours we were there. One hour was spent just waiting out the torrential downpour.
If you're traveling with kids in the area, go ahead and plan on a trip here if bad weather is expected.
The kids loved it, and the price is lower than what we would for a similar, albeit larger, museum in the area where we live. If you're from a larger metropolitan area, this will seem small and a bit cramped. But take into consideration, that this is one of the few seemingly kid friendly activities to do when you're visiting here from out of town.
My only concern is all the little kids sharing the different hats if one child has head lice they'd spread amongst all the kids
We love the Children's Museum and have been members there going on 8 years now. The staff is curteous, and the rotating exhibits are usually engaging for the kids. I will say that over the past 2-3 years the more permanent exhibits have gotten a bit ragged, and it seems like since they announced they were going to be moving to Thompson's Point, they've replaced the more activity-based exhibits with stuff that kids under 6 (i.e. kids with limited or no reading comprehension) have little-or-no interest in as they not-so "hands on." Maybe this is a cost-saving measure, but there's definitely a lot less for kids to DO than there was say 2-3 years ago.
This institution is very enjoyable for any kids. This instiution has 4 floors. Each floors have interesting and educational equipment. Some entertainment show is held on B1 floor. If you want to get a ticket, I recommend you buy it before coming.
Great time especially if you get there right when it opens. Otherwise, it was a crowd fest from 11am on. The interactive play areas were great. I wish they had one more floor of interactive exhibits in addition to the two they currently have. Overall, a good time with difficult parking availability.
Too crowded but still great
My kids had a blast, especially with the water installment and My Town play area. Easy to set up an appointment, find parking, and go to town.
Highly recommend the Children's Museum. Fun for kids of many ages. Even my 6 year old begs to go, especially for the star shows. The We Are Maine exhibit is a big hit, and any visit must include a visit to the fire truck for my 3 year old. Participatory children's theatre is a must for all ages. We go at least once a week, spending anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours (bring lunch to eat downstairs). The kids play hard and sleep well that night. The only downside is the street parking.
Really kept our 5 1/2 year old busy and entertained! Love the sunny spaces and uplifti.g colors!
It was a lot smaller than I remembered, and not just because I'm an adult now haha, they moved around a lot of stuff and I feel like the space is either a lot smaller or just more divided. I think it was better as it was, but I might be in the minority there 🤷♂️. Not going to try and refund our membership because I still think our child will love it.
My kids loved this place! It has a lot to play with. We spent most of the day there. It would be great for a cold or rainy day. The staff were very kind and interactive!
Your toddler will truly experience what it's like to be able adult. The museum is divided into sections in whicj the child had an opportunity to learn and experience on different occupation ranging from doctor, farmer, shop keeper, mechainc and so on.
Recommended to bring your kid there it was fun for both kids and the parents.
It's a fun little place in Portland. When I went, there were tons of kids. It was as if everyone was bumping into each other to get around but, the kids loved it. During the week we could only find on street parking. The garage the museum recommends was full by 930am, must have been the working crowd.
Check this place out
We are tourist and needed to find something to do with the kid on a rainy day. Found this gem and had a blast. The price is no bad either for 3 floors of fun for kids of all ages. The husband and I enjoyed it also. Great place to go.
Always a wonderful time! People working there are always so nice. I also love how they always tell people they don't turn anyone away. They have lots of options if you don't think you can afford a membership. If you're on MaineCare you can likely get memberships. Other ways too. Just go ask. They might even let you have a free trial day if you apply. Just a very welcoming environment.
Great place! We went in the morning, took a break for lunch and went back for a few more hours. Lots of fun for our 3 yo and almost 6yo. Would be fun for older as well. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.
I used to go to the Children's Museum when I was younger and I love it! Now I get to bring my kids and meet up for playdates here. Over the years they've improved the themed play stations and even added more. I'm super impressed by everything they have. Family friendly and lots of fun, tons to do!
My 5 year old loved the activities, so many different stations : Firetruck, spaceship, farm, hospital, boat. Especially loved the face painting and the chance she got to hold the fish! Highly recommend
Our 4yr and 8yr had a blast. It also had space for our 6mon old too. Great facilities easy to find.
Wonderful place for the kids of all ages. Pretend play in the fire truck, fishing boat, grocery or farm, or tactile play in the outdoor area, stream, logging site, or touch tank. The only problem is getting kids to move on from the ball room next to the entrance!
Very nice since they moved to new location. A few things from the old museum didnt make it over, but the other new activities were fun.
Spent a few hours here with young kids. They had a great time, and probably would have stayed all day. Lots to do in the exhibits, plus guides activities throughout the day. Would recommend, and would visit again.
What a great museum for children! The facilities are great for small children -- a pretend grocery store, a pretend ATM, an inflatable whale that you can get inside, a camera obscura, a greenhouse, a trawler, etc. Everything is clean and well-maintained.
You can easily spend the whole day here and keep the kids entertained with the events that run every hour or so (face painting, reading, etc.). The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I get the impression that they really love their jobs.
The only downside is that it's all the way up in Portland. If it were closer, I'd probably book a birthday party here.
Nice location, very close to the airport.
Had a birthday party there and it was great. They provided the tablecloths (which I had stressed about forgetting) and we got unlimited time playing in the museum with 2 hours in the birthday room. Yana had a great 4th birthday... a big thank you to The Children's Museum!
Fun and educational for all ages. The Children's Museum of Portland is well-designed and engaging. The exhibits span the familiar ("Our town") to the more unique, like the camera obscura. It's a great place to spend a few hours playing indoors with pre-middle school kids.
My 14 month old absolutely loves the children's museum, we have been taking greet since she was 6 months old. there are play spaces available for all ages, a fun time for all.
Had a great time with my wife and kids. Plenty for the kids to do and they don't frown upon adults joining in a bit! Make sure to check out the working beehive! It was so cool to see them in action.
Very busy place, but still enough space for kids to play. Price is heavily discounted if you have an EBT card. Has some cool displays, but plan on kids getting bored after a couple hours.
The best Children's museum in all of Portland. Our kiddo had a blast. Definitely recommend spending at least two hours in the ball room to the right when you first walk in.
What a gem in the city. We were looking for a place to entertain our 3-yr-old and this was a perfect place to get him through a hot day outside.
First Friday of each month has a $2 deal for anyone.
4-yrs-old and higher pays $16.25; not a bad deal at all.
One of the best children’s museums we’ve been too. Our 3 year old loved it. They have a ton for them to do and it wasn’t horribly crowded on a Monday.
Good for a rainy day. Creative exhibits for a range of ages. Our two year old had fun in the ball/vacuum tube room and in a few other exhibits.
Cute little museum! Kept the kiddos entertained for a long time with lots of activities. We went on a Friday morning and there was a real fire truck and police car out front for the kiddos to sit in - apparently they do this on Fridays - very cool.
Local kids shouldn't miss this Portland treasure!
And the theater is perfectly engaging for young kids. If they happen to catch the acting bug, they can potentially be in a play as well!
Great place for kids! Spent about 2 hours there...my kids loved the arts and craft station! Ideal for kids 2-7 in my opinion.
We had the best day seriously a blast we love coming here
Very fun! I especially loved the aquarium an climbing area. Awesome if you are in the area.
Great place for the littles. Could easily spend half the day!
Beautiful new space on Thompsons Point. Couldn't get any better.ale sure to check out a show at Mandy's Theater
Took my grandchildren on school vacation. They live the activities and exhibits. Parking was easy and plentiful.
Fun place for kids. Not as much as we thought to do - but plenty for one of the play sessions time.
It is a good spot for locals to spend some quality time with kids. As a visitor, I dis not consider it a great must fish place. They have many activities and exhibits for kids. Kids will surely like it. We went on a rainy day and it was super crowded.
Kids love this place! So much fun even my older kids had fun too.
Wonderful place to take children. The staff is warm and friendly. The activities are clever and engaging.
Super fun for a young family! My kids had an absolute blast! Highly recommend bringing children here!
We drive from the northshore MA to Portland, ME every other month just to bring our toddler. She loves it and never fails to be engaged. She loves the animal hospital, market, auto shop, and stream.
Tl;dr: If you have a car and an hour to drive there, I strongly recommend at least looking into the Children's Museum in Dover, NH, instead.
The Children's Museum in Portland, Maine, is fun and awesome - - for about 5 minutes. The museum itself is small and tends to be dirty around the edges, and the limited exhibits always seem to have pieces missing or broken. We bought a family membership in February but by April my preschooler was bored, and we only went about every other week or so. What's more, two of their best exhibits were "remodeled" or completely replaced over the summer: the grocery store section, which was pretty awesome before and was one of our favorite sections, was remodeled into a small farmers market style cart that my son isn't even remotely interested in, and the indoor wooden playscape on the main floor - a necessity for days when it's too cold and/or icy to play at an outdoor playground - was completely replaced with a multi-cultural exhibit that, while kinda cool, simply isn't as fun for the younger kids as the playscape was.
The good news is that plans are in place for the museum to move to a larger, brand new building, but the move is scheduled to take place in spring of 2019 and construction on the new site hasn't even begun yet. Until then? When we have an extra hour to drive there (and an hour back), Dover might be our best option.
According to my kids (4& 2) this children's museum is better than Boston one and I agree. No gift shop (yeah!) or cafeteria. Bring your own lunch/ drinks.
Nice museum for children up to age 10, I'd say. A bit on the expensive side, in my opinion. Our 7 snd 9 year old had a good time, the 12 year old, not so much...
So much fun! We attended First Friday with our 3 year old and 11 month old and were blown away with all there was to see, explore and participate in! We can't wait to go back!
Great for young kids and so friendly!
Wonderful place to bring family. Two hours perfect amount of time. Bonus no gift shop for melt downs.
My son and nephew love this place and always ask to go back due to the lifesized fire truck. It's fairly expensive for the state of disrepair it's in. If you're willing to spend a lot, your child will enjoy it though.
This is a great place to spend a couple hours with the kids. The staff is friendly. There are 4 floors of activities, a toddler area and an out door area.
It was fun for my little guy. Some of the displays needed maintenance, but on the whole it was clean and nice. We loved the outdoor area too!
A great place for children of all ages. Great staff, the help in the make-it room were wonderful.
It's excellent value if you live here and buy an annual pass. My children have had many years of entertainment here! The staff are super friendly and really love their work.
Great place for a toddler on a cold or wet day. Not too sure about older children. Felt it was more of a toddler playground. Exhibits didn't seem too engaging.
Multiple floors with different themed areas. Including a smaller area, that is completely padded, for kids under 2. My 15 month old daughter loved it. Parking was tough.
We went during the first Friday of the month after 5 pm and hence the fee was very low, just $2 for each. My kids enjoyed here. They nearly spent more than 2 hours here.
This a pretty small Children's Museum. There were activities about every half hour. Our girl's, 4&6, really enjoyed it.
Finding parking was difficult.
Great place for the kids, I advise arriving for a play session at least 30 minutes late to avoid the large crowds
Alittle exspencive but really awesome, come early so you have time to check everything out.
It’s okay. Friendly staff but the exhibits look kinda run down and dirty. Compared to Bangor’s Children’s Muesum this was just okay. My kids did enjoy it but I don’t think it was worth the $40 dollars.
My kids love it here
Great interactive play stations for children of all ages to explore. They even have a closed infant center. I would, however, like to see them do an update with fresh paint, new stations, etc.
Our toddler absolutely loves it here! Friendly staff and plenty of things for the little one to engage himself with. Well worth getting a membership here for repeated visits.
My kids love this place it's a great place for your kids to learn, you can even throw a birthday party for your child. By the time for your kids to get home it night night time because of the fun he or she has.
Fun exhibits for young children that allow for discovery and wonder. Small enough to visit each area in an afternoon, large enough to come back to enjoy new areas more in depth.
I have kids, ages 1-6 and they all have a great time at the museum. We gonna few times a month and they always find something fun to do.
Good place for kids. Good price!
Great staff, but it could use more exhibits. Not that our 4-year old seemed to mind, still plenty to do for the under 7 set.
Whenever we come to Portland we visit the children's museum. They package huge amount of exhibits in and rotate so many of them to keep it fresh. It's hard to just spend a couple of hours in here!
This is always a treat for my boys. They love it here!
Great day for the kiddo. He really enjoyed his day at the childrens museum. A++
Nice place for hands on children's activities. It enterained my 5 yr old and 8 yr old. There is plenty of stuff for younger children to do as well.
Good fun for the kids. Great attractions for kids of all ages.
Kids loved it. 6 and 9 years old. We thought our 9-year old might be bored, but he lived it. He especially liked the outdoor play area.
Great place for 3 and up. Maybe even 2.5. There is a tiny tots area but overall the things the kiddos want to do, take some height and climbing ability.
My favorite place to go with my grandchild when I'm in Portland, absolutely wonderful! I will most certainly be back on a day when it isn't raining to check out the outdoor play area.
Brought my son here for his 3rd birthday. Needless to say... I will DEFINITELY be bringing him back. It's amazing and has so many fun themed rooms and play activities :)
Awesome place! The live play was really great too.
Very fun place for the kids
Great place to spend a rainy afternoon with kids.
Really fun for the kids, even toddlers. Probably enough fun and activities for a few hours.
It was a great experience. My 4 year old loved it and all it had to offer.
Great place to spend a few hours with the kids.
What a wonderfully well thought out children’s museum. We had so much fun and stayed for hours!
Our little one loved the ball room. Also the live beehive was super impressive. The only downside: some areas were under construction...
I absolutely love working here!!
Went for a field trip with the summer camp I work for. It was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon!! Lots to do and a great way to learn new things without even realizing they're learning!
Lots of fun educational activities. Nice reading area.
Lots of fun for Damien, but a surprising lack of signage outside or inside. Helpful staffbut disorganised as He'll.
A bit expensive considering all of adults have to pay full price, but great for kids. My three year old loved it- stayed several hours.
An absolutely magical experience. My niece who is 2 was in Heaven! Will go back dozens more times.
This is a great children's museum. Our 2 year old son had a blast interacting with all the exhibits.
Starting to get a bit dated, with a musty / dirty feet smell. Usually fairly crowded too. But still an okay place to bring the kids to let them run around, play, and burn off some energy. Parking is difficult to find depending on the day, and you will most likely have to pay for it.
This was a fun and educational children's museum.
The theatre downstairs ended up being the highlight; even after hours of spinning the wheel in the lobby and running off to the area pointed at(the wheel pointer)
I paid two dollars a person on the first Friday of every month, the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable on the exibits they offer, three floors of stuff to do very fun for kids
Great place for kids...the staff could have been a little more informative at the front desk... Like stating how many floors are available to the public and what's on each floor.
Lots of entertainment for kids. Educational and fun. Wish it was bigger. Hard to get around when crowded. Don't miss it though - Kids loved it!
The place was great and most important thing is to make sure you take your time and see everything. Would visit the place again. Always adding more exhibits.
My nieces thoroughly enjoyed all of the interactive exhibits. A bit pricey though. Only worth it if you get a pass and go often.
Great place to take kids of all ages. They have several different activities and everything is well maintained.
We come here at least twice a week. Perfect place for my 3 year old and enough play space for my 9 month old.
Always love it here, it's been several years, but just as fun now that we have another little one. Highly recommended!!
Excellent experience for my boys. Clean, fun, great staff. Can't say enough good things
Wonderful museum for children, and while this location is in need of a refurbishment (which is coming in the form of a new location soon) the organization itself is a great presence in the community.
Amazing space for toddlers and kids. My son absolutely loved the ball room with the vacuum tubes and air blowers.
Amazing place to bring children. Discovery and play fun
Super fun! There's so much to play with. I love that there's a place to hang coats and drop strollers off.
Love this children's museum, reasonable prices and great for the family. We've enjoyed on rainy days and birthday parties.
Both my five year old and one year old granddaughters spent several happy hours at the museum. I loved it!
We have bought a membership two years in a row! My kids never get bored of the exhibits they have. We go almost once a week!
my daughter loved it she did not want to leave
Miss some of the old exhibits but the water exhibit with the balls and the light room were very neat!
Great place for the kids. They get hands on learning that's fun. The staff is awesome.
My mom got us a membership and we are loving it here!
Delightful. My 3 year old had 3.5 fantastic hours of fun on our first visit.
Great place to take the kids. So many activities and themes. Kids loved it there!
Nice overall. a little expensive. a lot of things weren't working. I think the staff does a good job. Just needs some updating.
Nice and quiet on Super Bowl day! Right now there is a change in the exhibits on the second floor, so part of that section is closed off..
The children's museum is an asset to our community - my wife grew up with it and now our son will too. We renewed our family pass each year.
My autistic boys like this place, we are Maine residence and member chip, have a good day for everyone 👱♀️👱♂️ …
Great place to visit with kids while in Portland. My daughter loved it. 2 years in a row now
Lots of fun for my 2, 4, and 6 year old kids! We have an annual pass.
What a great spot for active kids.
Great, fun place for kids - hopefully, crowding is less of an issue at their new location!
I thought my 18 month old grand niece wold be too young, but she had a blast!
Wonderful place for toddlers and children
Great place for younger kids to burn energy. But 7 or 8 years old is starting to push it.
The new building is fantastic!
The best place to take your kids from what I've found. 3 floors of fun for hours.
Such a fun place where children play, discover and learn. Captivating entertainment from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave.
It is ok.small and the theme is ok , not great. The staffs are wonderful though.
Add an amazing time My six-year-old loved it
Great! We took our 2 year old and there was plenty for him to do!
Great place for kids. Indoor playground and lots of learning. Good for all ages.
Great place for kids, but we need to buy ticket for parents, though nothing inside for parent's.
Great place, all around. Great content, great staff, great vibe. Parking situation could be better but its not that bad at all finding a spot.
The kids had a good time, but for me it was a little overpriced and didn't have as much to offer as I would expect.
What a great place for my grandson. He loved it so much we went back a second time that same day
It was small, but really fun for the kids and had a ton of activities for them.
Great little touch tank that our daughter learned a lot from, great educational areas and fun areas for younger ones
I have a 3 year old and he absolutely loved it! Very fun and educational.
Very nice... Lot better than the last place....

Amazing staff, everything was clean and organized
Great time. Kids had a blast! Definitely recommend this place.
So thankful for the Play Your Way sensory day
Not much for my 11 year old but the 9 year old liked it a lot!
Not a bad place, much like other children's museums we have been to. Came on a rainy Friday and the place was mobbed, bad idea.
Great place for the little ones. Plenty of activities to keep them busy.
Even on a school vacation day the museum absorbed the extra traffic well. So many interactive activities for kids of all ages!
Engaging & novel exhibits covering a variety of cultural, scientific, and creative subjects.
Kids love this this place. Lots of activities
Great place, my lil one went in grouchy and immediately changed her attitude when she saw everything inside...great place
Cute childrens museum. Had lots of hands on things for my kids. My 8, 6 year olds really enjoyed it
So fun! So many interesting exhibits and interactive spaces for various ages.
This place is surprisingly nice! A lot of fun things for kids to do
This place is only good for small children. If your kids are over 5 you will be disappointed.
Parking near the musem can be a bit of a challenge but it is well worth the walk from a parking garage to enjoy everything they have to offer.
Kids loved it especially the fire truck activities during the day$10 per person
Daughter absolutely loved it, and the staff is so great interacting with the kids.
The kids did not want to leave. Guided activities every 30 minutes, and plenty to do between those
Great place for kids to learn and play! EVERYTHING is interactive! Fun for everyone
Wonderful museum. Downsides are it's expensive and they charge for parking
Kids had a blast, cleanliness has been improved immensely as of late
The kids loved it!! Great learning experience for the whole family
Great museum for toddlers and young children. Fun and engaging exhibits.
Always a good time seeing the exhibits. We loved the Mr. Magee courtyard. And the nature exhibits.
We all had so much fun as a family!! Couldn’t see everything in 3 hours!!
Great shows for the whole family! 👩👩👧👦
Kind of dirty but my boys liked it. We even came home with conjunctivitis as a souvenir!
A very well designed facility with a WONDERFUL staff.
Doesn't make sense when they charge parents for entry fee and also there is no special activity for kids.
This is a great children's museum. A good amount of information and learning in a playful way.
Very nice & clean. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Keeps the kids busy! Can get hot on second floor, so have layers!
Wonderful way to spend the day with children. Learn, play, and have fun!
My daughter enjoys her time here and there's a lot to do
Needs some sprucing up and updating, but a nice effort to create a fun place for kids.
Lots of fun for any kids under 8.
