Reviews of Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Zan Lee
A small but enjoyable Modern Art Museum in downtown Scottsdale. I am visiting family in town from Los Angeles and had missed seeing this museum before for some reason. I’m very glad that I got a chance to stop in today and see the exhibits. Their feature artist currently is Beverly McIver, but they also have other exhibits with different artists. The staff was also polite and attentive and parking is easy and plentiful with a parking garage right next to it. I give 4 stars only due to the size and selection not the quality. I would recommend to any fan of museums or Modern Art.
Rory Corrigan
Cute, smaller modern art museum. They had some neat collections including an exhibit about art in colonial Africa. Price seemed a little steep for such a small collection, but I like supporting the arts when possible.
The big attraction was the Skyspace; I could have sat there and reflected for hours, met a nice gentleman who shared some more info about the artist behind it.
Totally worth a stop if you are checking out downtown Scottsdale.

My thoughts are right alongside of the others who have mentioned the small size of this museum but it was still a nice visit for those who have an appreciation for different kinds of art. It wasn’t really my cup of tea though but made for a good picture inside one of their outdoor spots. Another note, I wish I would have known they were letting people in at no charge upon arrival on the specific day I went before I purchased tickets online.
Benjamin Kastelic
This place is so beautiful with lots of entertainment for all ages. I highly recommend checking scheduled events for family time, date nights, or just fun shows. Also had lots of local artist within the building. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop 💐
Rick Spiegel
Always awesome exhibits. Friendly staff and outstanding place to visit on a regular basis. We have been visiting the museum for over 8 years. Take the time to visit next visit to Old Town Scottsdale. Highly recommended

Always a must-see when I'm in Scottsdale/Phoenix. This time I came specifically to see Brad Kahlhamer's SWAP MEET exhibition (up til October 9, 2022). Beautifully installed (love the trailer!) with a wide ranging group of works including sculpture, drawings, books, and ephemera from Kahlhamer's studio. This trip I also happily discovered that SMoCA has a James Turrell - the surrounding installation of which is fabulous.
Erin Bonesteel
Fantastic!! The workers are knowledgeable and kind. The Beverly McIver exhibit is moving and incredible well displayed. The space is beautiful and I would highly recommend seeing the museum and all of the public art surrounding it. Absolutely recommend.
Victor Wang
Great spot to spend some time if you want to challenge your own visions on what art means and what it could represent. It’s a surprisingly small museum with 4 exhibition halls. But you can really spend some time to relax and enjoy each artist individually. There are timed tickets which they enforce quite strictly. Easy to access via bus/public transportation. Friendly staff and lots to do around the area.
D
Absolutely loved the museum! Had such beautiful art pieces! 100% would recommend to anyone looking for something to do in Phx.
Jason Zhu
SMoCA, kind of a modern art museum. Other than the exhibition (by paid or free admission depending on the schedule), the open area was also full or attractions. Photographers would come to the skyspace with an elliptical opening at the ceiling, casting a heightened awareness of light and blue sky. In May (2021.05.06 when we visited), the light was perfect between 2 PM - 4 PM. Other season or time may vary. Pay attention to open hours info. Or ask the reception for open event time.

Went to the museum mystery event at night. Super fun. 5/10 difficulty level. I am going to do this again soon! Great date night.
Michael Wolfson
Great small museum. The exhibit from the permanent collection was stellar, curation and signage insiteful. Staff friendly and helpful.
Emmanuelle Caumont (Ask Frenchie - Realtor)
Fun exhibit of the "Infinity" theme. We can only stay in the room for 4 minutes so it's not enough time to get into the element but it was interesting. The Wild Life exhibit was very diverse, several mediums were used and combined together, check out my photos, definitely worth the visit. Lastly there was a room with funky seat that swivel wildly. I tried it and there l ended my visit with a smile. Please note that visits are free on Thursdays!!!
Ryan Falconi
I loved the interactive exhibit, but my favorite was the contemporary glass art. It was super beautiful and unique. The only downside was that there weren't a ton of exhibits and things to see. You could easily visit here in a few hours.
Janay Marie
I'm so glad free days are an option. very small, I was looking for more. 3 stars for the artist I did enjoy their work. It was weird in a good way. I love that parking was free also.
Kiran Antony
The museum is not big but there's a lot of cool art here. The ones where you can interact is pretty phenomenal..
The private glass art collection is pretty nice as well.
Tayler McEntire
This place was an absolute trip. I wish I could come experience it new all over again. Even if you're not into art, this is a really cool place to go and chill out with a friend. If you are into art, then you'll love this! With how interactive it is, people of all ages can enjoy themselves. Take your time at every attraction to really mentally blank out on it, so you can get the full effect. If that makes sense. You'll see what I mean when you go.
Aurora De la Peña
This is such a great museum, the exhibitions were great and the staff was very nice giving us facts about the artist.
Justin Mccart
I really enjoyed visiting , tons of western history here . Also the art work is amazing !
I recommend checking out the location , well worth the visit . 👍🏼 …

This is hands down one of my favorite museums in Arizona. Its exhibits are changing frequently and they even have interactive exhibits on occasion. A great place to see a different forms of art at a great price
Andrew Davey
This is a fantastic museum that offers stunning exhibits and a permanent collection that stretches outside. If you're touring the art galleries in Old Town Scottsdale, you definitely also need to come here!
C H
This contemporary museum was really interesting! There were only a few rooms but it was still interesting none the less. It was really cool that most of the exhibits here were interactive and some even made music!
Yve K
Nice little museum. On the liberal side with their displays. Overall, it was a nice one-time experience.
Tom Schwarzkopf
Beautiful museum in the heart of Oldtown. I would advise going on days where the admission costs are either free or to pay what you want… $12 seems a bit steep for three small galleries. I was impressed by two of the three exhibits- it is nice that the galleries regularly rotate so there will be fresh options every so often. The gift shop was cute to boot.
Kim Mehring
It is always a treat to be at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. This month they have technology and interactive art. I always find it fascinating to submerged in the art and be part of it. Always something new and exciting you should come visit the Museum.
Antonio Nelson
I definitely had fun here. My imagination grew a lot more after leaving this place. Money well invested in this place. My wife and I really enjoyed the visit. My wife's idea to come here was a great spot to visit during our vacation. Customer service was pleasant and even had more information than what was posted so I learned even more to make the experience. The infinity room was the highlight.
Josh “Scosh” Scotia
One of the Hidden gems of downtown Scottsdale and yes there is culture in downtown Scottsdale! They have a great man collection gift store and their rotating displays are always on point. get there early to have the place to yourself during the week and make sure to talk up the tour guides as they have all the good information! don't miss out on the surrounding coffee shops restaurants and a walk through the park.
Valerie Lynch
We wish we lived closer to visit more often. Small but mighty. Very meaningful shows. Scottsdale is lucky to have this museum.
Mba Dood
I’m very glad that I got a chance to stop in today and see the exhibits. Their feature artist currently is Beverly McIver, but they also have other exhibits with different artists.
Lance Gibler
Pretty cool place but they have private parties unannounced and not made aware to the public of such private events. I called and checked website and it said open. After driving a hour to get there I found out it was closed for private event. No person to answer the phone!!! No recording or website notice!!
Daniel Hiek
It's an ok museum. It's pretty small but has a few interesting pieces. If you're in the area check it out but don't go only for this.
Justin Snider
Ocean of light exhibit was worth the price of admission. Very small museum, some of the stuff seemed kind of silly and not really museum worthy. Gift store is tiny and kind of sad.
Armando Zires
This is a great activity to experience with the family and escape the heat for a couple hours. I appreciated the knowledgeable staff providing feedback of the art pieces. It helped me enjoy the art gallery more. Please note some exhibits are interactive and others are not allowed to be touched**Once you’re finished, walk over for gelato at Barista Brothers. Enjoy!
Danielle H
Great experience. They showcase artists from all walks of life. Entry fee is affordable.
Mary P
Small but very nice museum. I really enjoyed the art of Beverly McIver. We will definitely go back in the future. Visited using the Culture Pass from the library for free admission. It was a fun day trip
Cale Haug
The only Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, SMoCA is unique in its choices, exhibits and offerings. Although some children may enjoy this museum, it caters to an older and more sophisticated clientele. Great spot for a date.
Parking is free, but difficult to navigate. I visited on National Museum Day, which by coincidence was a Thursday. Every Thursday, admission to the museum is FREE!
Right in the Heart of Scottsdale's Civic Center, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art truly reminds visitors of Scottsdale's Roots: that Scottsdale hasn't much changed from its small-town feel, its artist colony of well-hospitable eccentrics, in Sepia.
A must-see for Old Town Scottsdale tourists, SMoCA is on par with Taliesin West in terms of local artistic importance. The museum is well-worth checking out, especially for free, on a Thursday, even if for only fifteen minutes!!
Shaun “Laubster” Laub
Very unique art work, big open spaces, indoor & outdoor
amor vinola
We watched the concert of the world renowned and world class artist Lea Salonga. It was a wonderful experience, indeed.
The size of seats are small even for a petite person, also there's not much leg room to at least stretch the legs a little. But other than this, the venue was good and did not have a problem with parking.
Lorenzo .Laurent
A small museum, not an overwhelming place to check some of the current art going on in the world scene, just the right scale. One can see different exhibitions each month and attend other events.
The pictures are from the installation "Ocean of light: Submergence" by Squidsoup... a refreshing plunge!
Blaine Horrocks
A small but interesting mix of artworks. When we visited there were three primary installations. An abstract, a multigenerational collection of Inuit pieces and some great pop culture paintings.
Bethany Summers
Performance art isn’t really my thing but it was interesting and I got free tickets from the Phoenix public library
Erika Cote
Boyfriend and I had a great time! Lane was so friendly and gave us so much great info. We loved getting to hear the secrets behind the art. Great place to spend an afternoon!
Haden Newhouse
Definitely one of my favorite local museums! There is always something unique to check out and I appreciate all the variety of work they showcase. I especially love how close it is to the Scottsdale Civic center. When I was here last with my dad and sister, I was trying to get a student discount and forgot my student ID at home, so the front desk receptionist was super nice and gave me the discount even though I forgot my ID and did not have the Canvas app on my phone! 😁 Besides that I love their James Turrell exhibition that is currently on display.
Alex Rios
Fantastic museum! Very interesting pieces when my wife and I went. A bit on the small side but that just means quality over quantity here. Great place to beat the heat for a couple of hours.
Brian Mccarty
Great place, ever changing exhibits. Everyone should go!
Madelyn
Love this museum and would totally go back! The museum is the perfect size to really spend time and take everything in without feeling overwhelmed. Was there for the Beverly McIver exhibit and loved it! The staff was very kind, especially the security guard, who shared with us stories about the artist and her paintings, which he learned about from talking with the artist at opening night and from the museum director.
eva gartnerova
Unfortunately when we were visiting only two galleries were open as the rest was under the preparation of new exhibitions. Anyways it was nice to see it.
Lisa Rodrigues
Decent price and take your time to read all the info or it does go by fast. Also check out the exterior, its beautiful
Ryan Wolff
Small but extremely impressive collection, the skyspace alone is worth a visit, if you do go, look at the sky for ~30 seconds without moving your eyes and you'll be amazed! It's otherworldly!
Patricia Contreras
Small but definitely a fun place to visit. It’s free and it is in old town Scottsdale so you can walk around the shops as well. We had a layover and visited this place and then rented the lime bikes and road around old town.
Rachel Ewell
Exhibitions here never fail! The building is a gem of gorgeous architecture as well. Great spot to spend some time 💕 …
Rama M
The art exhibition is excellent. So diverse and immensly talented artists
Maia Knighton
Interesting exhibits but not a very big museum, don't plan on spending a long time here. Loved the word wall!
Wendell Campbell
Small, but somewhat interesting displays of contemporary art. Museum is divided into separate rooms with completely different subject matter. I believe 2 or 3 of the rooms are only temporary exhibits and will be exchanged out once allotted time has passed. Look to spend no more than an hour or 2 max.
A P M
This place is a3 on the way to a 4. Why? It's clearly a younger museum, and they have few exhibits. But the price reflects that ($10). They have 3 major halls, and they exhibit work that is bigger in scale and takes up much of the space. As a result, there are few artists represented. But, I respect the fact that their docentes are extremely knowledgeable. This will be a museum that will achieve maturity in a few years. Great effort in the meantime!
Richard Ruozzi
A little on tge small side. But enjoyable
Erika Clary
Wished we had given ourselves more time to thoroughly examine every art piece. What we did see was fantastic.
Steve Cockrill
Small but interesting art museum. Art work changes frequently so you never know what you will encounter. Some interactive displays.
Araceli Sanchez
Love it!! A must go , 😉 😉 the exhibit of lights it's beautiful my daughter didn't want to go home, extremely recommend …
Katya “ArtDiva” Belinsky
The Museum was very well presented as a place to view Art Works . My personal opinion, was very disappointed in the artworks that were showcased as it did not rise to the standard of Modern Art.
Katya Belinsky
Vicente A Ruiz
A very cool place for your dose of contemporary art. The infinity room was my favorite. A recommendation to anyone.
William Clove
The museum is really quite small, much smaller than I expected. I went on an evening with free admission, and I'm glad I did. It was one of those things I'd do once and not return, and if you're in the area looking to kill a few minutes, you can that here (especially as there are other free admission art galleries in the area you can walk through, all of which are, in my opinion, better). Overall, contemporary art is not my style, so I can't say I really enjoyed it. My rating is for the museum itself, not the art exhibits. It's small and serves its purpose, but really does leave something to be desired. The gift shop was nice, however.
Eric Allen
Friendly helpful staff in the gift shop. As a whole the museum seems to be geared towards making contemporary art more accessible to the masses, normally a good thing, except here it apparently comes at the cost of showcasing more innovative, informed, and engaging works. Overall I wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Probably a good place to take a date if you're more into art than them.
Virginia Miller
The infinity room exhibit was phenomenal! Worth the trip itself! I also really liked the lounge area with the spinning chairs. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed letting our inner children out to play for a while. The museum itself was smaller than I expected, but there's plenty to see and do if you have an hour to spare.
Leon Brown
This is a small gallery with only four rooms, but the exhibits we're engaging and interesting enough to take the full hour you're allotted to get through. I particularly liked Mimi O Chun's perspective on post pandemic daily life which is currently in display.
Jeanette Todd
Great variety of mediums and content. Very cool I summer heat. Parking was free. Gift shop had a nice selection of interesting memorabilia and featured artist works.
Jim Orchard
It was our first time at SMoCA and we loved it! There are interactive displays and amazing drawings and paintings. The best part to me was the glass exhibit though, the pieces were incredible. It doesn't take long to see the museum but entry is cheap and it's definitely fun. I would recommend going!
Connor Eyherabide
Went for a mystery event and had a great time
Maria Alvarado
I went along with my sister, to help her with a school project and I really enjoyed the exhibition. It was clean and calm and quiet. I loved that the atmosphere really felt like a place where art spoke for itself. The lady at the front desk was welcoming and kind. Totally worth taking a look at. Loved it.
Geo clau
The building is very nice. Glass, concrete, steel. The layout is very simple and small. As soon as you enter to the vestibule you can choose to go to the gift shop, patio with sculptures, or to the two very large exhibit rooms. The layout flows very well and it did not feel crowded. Check out the free days on their website. The bathrolms were so nice and clean.
The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable about the exhibits.
Steven Zauner
It's a museum. A very small museum.
I expected more out of Scottsdale!
To be honest, I was disappointed. I have been to many museums of contemporary art and they were larger and at least put much more effort and poured more funds into it.
Being Scottsdale, and all it stands for... I was expecting bigger and better than I got.
I do not wish to be offensive, just my honest opinion.
Jessica James
Very neat place. The Ocean of Light exhibit is fun. Okay place for kids, except for the light exhibit and lounge room I was having to stop my kids over and over from touching exhibits. The museum is small and you can see it all in under an hour. There is a gift shop and large clean restrooms. Kids 14 and under are free. The shops, restaurants and grounds around the museum are nice. You will find the large LOVE exhibit outside behind the museum, great photo spot.
yomisola shekoni
Amazing works of art. It’s smaller than I expected but well worth it. Wish there were more exhibits though, some powerful stuff here. The gift shop also has some really great items. I left inspired
A Z
Great! I enjoyed my visit here. I got free tickets from the library to come here. (Normally tickets are $10 a pop).
It's easy to access- just park at the Civic Parking Garage (free parking), and then cross the construction bridge, walk past the Performing Arts center, and there you are. :)
The lady at the front desk was very nice and courteous. The guides inside the museum are very helpful too. One guide in particular stood out with how friendly and laid back he he was. He showed everyone how to interact with that motion-sensored music exhibit.
The museum, itself, was pretty small- with 4 total exhibits with one more exhibit outdoors and it look about an hour to slowly see it all.
Jasmin Danae
Amazing place! the photo ops are great and the place is small and straight forward. I came here with my brother and my daughter, she's 6 months old and really liked it too! The gifts in the gift store are amazing and the staff totally cares about the museum and the visitors. I cant wait to go back and bring my son and cousins! Grab a culture pass at the library and head down. Thank me later.
Steve Doyle
Thursdays it's free. I have come here plenty of times and love their interactive displays as well as their paints, sculptures, ceramics, or glass work, and everything they have to offer. Thursdays it's free so be ready to enjoy it, otherwise you can show up whenever they are open and have a blast whether it's with friends, family, or your significant other. I know I have had plenty of successful dates with my girlfriend and friends in which we always leave with a smile and had fun, so without a doubt come.
Danny Arellano
This is a nice cozy little museum. Lately the exhibitions seem to be centered around projections mapping with video and audio which can be hit or miss depending on your taste. The gift store always has cool stuff to look at. Also the Center for Performing Arts is right there so you can combine visits. Close proximity to some eating and drinking as well as a little park.
Ray Ray
The Ocean of light installation was unbelievable. It's a great place for contemporary art. Thursdays are always free, make note.
Dennis McDaid
Loved the Soleri exhibit. Really fascinating artwork and architecture
Dean Frio
Great little museum. I went on a free admission day, so I don't know what the actual cost is, but it was a great way to kill about an hour. The gift shop was filled with awesome merch and great little trinkets! If you visit keep in mind it is a smaller museum and probably won't take you an entire day to go through it's exhibits but there are amazing surrounding restaurants!
Krista P
We really enjoyed the interactive exhibits as well as the paintings. The gift shop contents seems a bit out of place, but still is nice to look around. I definitely will continue to return since the exhibits change every season.
Kim Davis
Outstanding juxtaposition of conventional art (paintings, sculpture, etc) and interactive digital art. A true demonstration of how art can be in many different mediums and forms.
My children also loved it. My older child learned that art can be high tech and digital, and my daughter appreciated the Smart Zone as an opportunity to paint on her own.
As a family, it was great, but I get the impression that if I was there with adults I would have an equal, but very different experience. Awesome museum!
Nicole Kridler
Interesting place to go. I like the museum but it seems kind of small. Maybe it was just the layout. But they had a selection of a few different types of art when I visited. Really something for everybody. The staff is informative and friendly about the art and surrounding areas of Scottsdale too.
Alexis
Such a fun place with rotating art exhibits! It is free all day on Thursdays and free on Fridays and Saturdays after 5 PM! Easy place to get out of the heat and spend some time to looking at modern art., definitely bring a friend with you to take some pictures.
Lakenya TC
My girlfriend and I were on vacation for our anniversary and ran across this gem. Denise gave us the ultimate tour of the museum! There was a lot of unique pieces. She was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed her take on things about each short film. Luckily we ran into her. I recommend giving this museum a visit. Thank you Denise!!!!!
Matthew Blondeel
Contemporary Art is not really my thing but it is free admission on Thursdays. Four galleries and approximately ten exhibits. It was time well spent for something free to do while walking through old Town Scottsdale. Gift shop was pretty cool with art for the kids to do also.
Deseree Mitchell
The museum is worth going to for it's crazy chairs alone. I was not a fan of the current exhibit, but look forward to the next one. Free on Thursday and every other Saturday. Try the chairs. My neighbor and I spent 45 minutes laughing and riding the chairs. Great fun!
Tom Stinson
I wasn't sure what to expect. The museum was very nice. I originally set three stars but I think that was more about me misunderstanding what they are about. If you are expecting oil paintings you may have the same reaction that I did. I changed to four stars because my wife and I have talked several times since our visit about the works we saw and what they meant. It has made us think about the world around us in new ways. Thanks!
Samantha Schinnerer
It’s a small museum, but a really good visit
William Moffatt
Interesting mix of old and new. Avoid the "spirit" movie, waste of time
Nicholas Banks
This is a great little museum, I've been through several times for different exhibits, and they always have something interesting. It's also free to enter on Thursdays! Don't miss the sky space out in the courtyard - it's quite an experience!
Victor Mann
Beverly McIver's wonderful exhibit of contemporary art portraying her authentic self . Best known for he self portraits that reflect various aspects of the artist life. McIver's: Full Circle is a look at the human condition running the gamut of emotions it is a triumph to behold.
Laura Kelley
You can get free passes to this place at the ASU library or just any library! It doesn’t take too long to go through the whole thing. My husband wasn’t too impressed with this place. I liked all the glass art that I saw, but then we got to the interactive art. Some were cool, but others didn’t work, which was embarrassing...All in all, it was a pretty okay place. Not bad. It was neat, but I don’t have to go back any time soon.
Michael Talis
Very interesting building with and the outdoor installations. Current exhibit was not my cup of tea. The stuff was really helpful and gave us a tour of the building and the grounds. Interesting items in th ed museum shop.
Kayla Scott
What the museum had to offer was good. Well planned and executed exhibitions. But the place is advertised to be much larger than it is. Thankfully we went on a Thursday which is free admission to the public. It costs $7 for students, with student I.D., and $10 for adults.
Erin Belden
We went for the first time yeasterday and i was very pleasantly surprised. It wasnt as big as i originally thought it waa going to be but the kids had a lot of fun. Especially with the interactive exhibits. Before we got to the car they already asked when we would be able to go again. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable!
Christopher Howard
Glad we stopped, interesting art, courtyard, nice staff.
Candice Quinerly
We came here because our plans changed and the manager (?) saw us and offered us two free admission tickets. It has several rotating art galleries. It was beautiful and well thought out. Would definitely return.
Gyles Allen
The museum isn't vast (about four medium-sized rooms), but the exhibits that were on display were interesting and thought-provoking. The ideal time to visit the museum is on Thursday when admission is free. It's the perfect first stop to Old Town Scottsdale's Artwalk every Thursday in which the local galleries showcase their works for sale. After you've had your fill of art, you're within walking distance to some bars and restaurants as well as the aforementioned art walk, so there's no reason to skip this place of culture.
David Dick
Very interesting, diverse collections, with convenient bilingual descriptions of each artist's presentations. We feel more cultured after visiting and enjoying the museum.
Bea Tobol
We love this museum!!!
Fortunately we had a Saturday night flight and Saturday after 5 it was free!
The museum is very interesting . It’s a must to see in Scottsdale. They have a nice room with “wobbly swinging chairs and mirror room with lights and music.BeHind the store in the museum they have a little arts and crafts room kids can color and post their creations on the wall . People working there were VERY polite and informative.
Loved it .Well go again when in Arizona . It’s like 20 min drive from Phoenix and when you park near the museum not to go to the parking site right away but drive behind. It will take you around the parking to the side. It’s free parking there so you don’t have to pay for parking.
Liz Diaz
It's free on wednesday!! Loved it
Abi Perez
The staff was so helpful and knowledgeable we asked about the gallery and their favorite pieces and with full hearts they shared really pretty details about their perspective we are so grateful
payable on death
Audio and sometimes videos are featured in the art exhibits by some of the most talented artists wow but the only downside is some of the ppl that work there just standing in all black that survey the areas will stare at you and pick only certain customers to tell about the art which I overheard some interesting details just wish they weren't so awkward
Sam Asaki
Great art exhibits. Very inexpensive, but still a nice date spot. It's not very large, so the whole thing can be seen in less than an hour. Lots of interesting stuff in the gift shop too.
Lucio Pihanna
There are 3 installations presented in this museum at this time and until Oct 6, I believe. There is a contemporary glass art exhibit which I found fascinating; some of the items on display were similar to things I have viewed before but others were totally different and some didn't even look like glass. Another gallery showed the paintings, drawings and video created by a mid-career Southwest region artist named Shizu Saldamando. The 3rd gallery displayed Art on the edge of Technology and this gallery was fascinating. Arm movement or body movement could make the art on the wall change based on the movement of the viewer - quiet fascinating. There were a few wheelchair bound visitors and this is a fun and wonderful display for them and everyone.
Carlos “El Fajazo” Gonzalez
Honestly, I want to give this place 3 stars but that's kinda unfair because it just didn't meet my expectations. I came here after seeing the Phoenix art museum (Go there, go now, MY GOD is that place wonderful) and really there is just no variety here compared to the Phoenix Art museum. That's not to say that this place isn't good. I mean it isn't, but it's not bad. It's a cute little museum to maybe bring your girlfriend to if she really wants to go. But the spinning cone chair is magnificent! I had so much fun spinning on that chair! Anyway just check it out for yourself, you know, if you're an art buff :)
Rachel Rueth
Love this museum. Four spacious galleries house rotating contemporary exhibits that stimulate the senses and open the mind. The works featured are sometimes controversial, sometimes more objective, focusing on form and creating an environment or experience, but I have yet to be disappointed or bored by anything I see here. Museum is close by, easy to access so it's a great way to spend an hour or so. Gift shop offers up plenty of unique products and the grounds at Scottsdale Civic Center are beautiful for strolling through. SMoCA hosts plenty of lectures and social events as well if you want an experience with art that is more interactive with the community.
Kelley McNaughton
Love this area. Ironically, the Arcadia district was the location of my first home as an infant.
Derek Pospisil
Really cool interactive exhibit and glass sculptures
Larysa Moler
Great place to see work from interesting, sometimes under shown artists, ranging from local to those from around the world, many however are world famous and are a treat to see in this intimate space. Perfect amount of galleries displaying variety of works to enjoy and absorb without feeling overwhelmed.
Mehrdad Esfahani
We got there on a free set of tickets. The exhibition about lights were awesome!
Susan Schneider
The museum is a gem. Really enjoyed the exhibits. Museum shop had some really unique items. It was a great experience.
Shawna Salgado
A fun little place to go to when you have some spare time. Clean and I learned so much from the artist who had their art displayed. Some I never heard of and some I was super impressed. I think they change their art displayed, but the time I went I was amazed and loved it.
Kaylie Kerr
They are handling things with the pandemic so well! I have always loved this place and it was nice to get out of the house to do something that felt more normal while still being safe. Wonderful little place!

I've never been here and not seen something interesting, this place is a part of my childhood. I remember one time about 15 years ago that an architecture firm moved its offices into the exhibit space, that was weird and fun. There's always something weird and fun going on here, as pictured below. If you're in town check the place out.
Barry Schweig
Interesting place, not large nor crowded
Pavel Sidakov
Nice small museum to visit when you are around old Town Scottsdale. They change their collections pretty frequently and the gift shop is definitely very entertaining to browse. Make sure to visit the SkySpace that tucked away to the side. Highly recommend
Raoul Lopez
Ordered the Coconut Rum Sorbet, and the Berry cheesecake ice cream. Both were delicious. I also had an affogato with mint ice cream and that was pretty epic too. The place has a cozy atmosphere and the servers were polite and friendly.
Sarah G
very small museum with very modern exhibits. I suggest you check out ahead of time what exhibits are there and if you think you'll like them. I've had a bad guide here once and hated it, then a great guide and loved it. So highly recommend getting a good guide here!
Paloma Ibañez
I visited for my first time for an Arizona Community Foundation event and am so thankful for it, otherwise I don't know if I would have made time to check it out. The art director is incredible and with her staff is bringing the SMOCA to life in a way I've never experienced before with it's Permanent Collection / Impermanent Museum exhibit. I can't wait to go back! You also shouldn't miss the Mel Roman exhibit through Oct 2, 2016!!
Aaron Jay Lev
I've been to Contemporary Art museums across the country but I think the one in Scottsdale is the most approachable. It offers a variety of programming to reach out to different groups of people (including teenagers). I appreciate the community outreach.
It is conveniently located in Old Town and they have a GREAT Gift Shop. Plan on bringing a few bucks to get a memorable gift on your way out.
Many of the exhibits are interactive so I was able to get lost in the experience for a bit. Great times.
Shivam Trivedi
A little gem in the city of Scottsdale if you like art. Not particularly big, but has a cool music exhibit and a good gift shop. Free on Thursdays so an excellent spot for nice Thursday afternoon.
Charles Boyd
I go to this museum most times I visit Phoenix. It's small and nice and they always have interesting exhibits. I really enjoyed the Paolo soleri exhibit until I found out he molested his daughter! Gross!
ken cooper
The museum is small, but usually has some interesting exibits. Free admission every Thursday and on 2nd Saturdays. If visiting Old Town Scotsdale, it is a nice side trip on the free days. There are restaurants near the museum that you will miss if you only visit the street part of Old Town.
Louder AZ
Its a great place for some avant-garde art. It is kind of small and when one exhibition takes up a whole room, you get less of an experience. Still a great place to go for a part of your date night. Plus it's in a great part of Scottsdale. I would definitely recommend.
Jana Snyder
Everything depends on the current exhibition. The "top" chairs are permanent & fun. But everything else is rotating exhibit & what was there during our visit was a big disappointment. So check before you go & make sure the current exhibit looks interesting to you.
Leina M
3 out of the 5 galleries were closed when I went, gift shop was full of feminist garbage, but thankfully the admission price was reduced. Of the 2 galleries open, the infinity room by Refik A. was definitely very fascinating. the other gallery smartly utilized the "salon" technique of cramming as many pieces on the wall space seeing as how the other galleries were under renovation. most were all right, had a few inspiring pieces that I was able to hone in on amid the clutter. they also had some fun spinning chairs in a seperate lounge room where I guess they were supposed to have a film playing every now and then? the museum should be fully opened by now.
WRL
A wonderful museum to visit in Scottsdale! And not as huge as some other modern art museums that take a day or two to see. This one can be done in maybe 2 hours.
Anneliese Muttaqee
You have to see the infinity room it is so Awesome
randy silva
Love this place awesome the employees are nice and Exhibits are cool
Amy Maxey
I've been twice and the exhibits were fascinating. The guides were unobtrusive but very informative about the artists and pieces. Love this place!
Blessed “Blessed &Favored” Favored
A very happy place! My entire multi-generational family- ranging from age 4-45 thoroughly enjoyed SMOCA! Everyone loved the play area because it is engaging and inspires creativity! The gift shop is charming. We are grateful to the donors/volunteers etc. for SMOCA!
Celeste Mueller
Have been here a couple times and it's wonderfully weird. Only takes 45-60 minutes or so. Strange and memorable, definitely recommend
Alfonso Rodriguez (Fonzy)
There is always something awesome here. Great place to enjoy art in some peace and quiet. The gift shop might be expensive for my taste, but they have extremely unique and entertaining items.
Yvette P
They have free parking to the west of museum. The museum itself is pretty cool, I went to see the Infinity Room and that was so awesome! Check online for free dates, I know Thursdays are free for sure.
Robynn Turley
Loved the Unapologetic exhibit! Such a great idea to focus on women artists who account for only 15% of art displayed in museums nationally.
Andrea Castaneda
This place is small (only 3 rooms) and the guy who worked there creepily followed my kids around probably to make sure they didn't touch anything. Other than that, the pieces they had on display we're interesting.
Raj
Great hidden gem in downtown Scottsdale. Always has good art exhibits and installations.
Bernard Brown
This place was really interesting...it was a small exhibit but full of quality pieces. The staff was so awesome and knowledgeable that it made this place that much better. I would definitely recommend at least a visit here!
William Arch
Went here back in 2017 and it was an alright experience. Employees were a bit rude but other than that, the art was amazing. Hopefully would like to go back in a few months once they are opened up again.
Kenneth Ventura
Okay visit. The art museum had three of the four galleries open. The trip was fairly quick.
Jordan Beard
I was bored here, but it just didn't suit my taste. To each their own! It was only $10, so no big deal. Quite a small place, not a lot of art on display, so don't expect to be here for more than an hour unless you really like to study each piece of work!
Raven Skysong
It's an interesting mix of art. Small museum, but i still spent a couple hours looking at the different art styles. The light show was really cool
Liz Cardenas
Small museum but it showcases great exhibitions. Offers student discounts on already afordable prices. Surrounded by many other fun stops.
C Jones
Thoughtful and truly contemporary art. SMOCA pushes past the edges in a fantastic way with their installations and never disappoints. Some exhibits I love and some I so not but it’s NEVER dull, uninteresting or non-provocative to spend time here.
William Chen
A spacious and quiet place for you to slowly browse through the collections or simply sitting there.
Ryan
I like this place. Been a few times over the years. Exhibits are usually great, last time I went I was a little underwhelmed but overall this is usually a fun couple hours on a weekend. Also it's right in old Town Scottsdale so the whole area makes for a great time
Samuel Mattison
Pretty neat little museum. Only three exhibits so I'd suggest only going on Thursday after 5pm, because it is free then. Small and theme based.
Chris Revelle
My favorite museum in Phoenix area. The exhibitions are not always amazing, but SMoCA takes risks in a city without much of an experimental art scene.
Denver Greene
When we went it was being renovated. But really we just went to the The James Turrell Skyspace, which is always pretty cool. You should try to watch the light sequence (check their schedule). How the sky seems to just float in front of you is really cool.
Bennett
Small, cute little museum in the heart of Scottsdale! The particular day we went they were featuring POC artists, and I LOVED it!
Elson Varkey
Free on second Saturdays and the staff are very helpful in understanding the meaning behind many of the artforms. Although if you wanted to keep to your self there are descriptions for each art piece along the walls.
Macer Bean
Always love going on free nights.
Courtland Hopkins
It was an interesting display and the staff was very good.
I had a good afternoon looking at the art
Amanda Barth
Every exhibit is beautifully and thoughtfully curated. Light installations, sculpture, artists' sketchbooks, interactive art, everything is striking. I love this place, and I try to visit whenever I can.
P Picasso
My family and I have enjoyed many of the exibits at Smoca over the years like the "Almost warm & fuzzy" that included a full sized toy fire truck. The "James Turrell feature" a few years back was so cool we went back several times. I always look forward to visiting and I think it has been a great addition to the culture of this town.
Paolo the Unitoonist
SMoCA is always a great way to do something different with the family. Friday evenings are free and the exhibits change regularly. This combo makes for a great way to take the kids out for something special on a budget. Exhibits very greatly, so each trip feels fresh and new.
The art is never the same thing twice. I've seen exhibits by greats like; Paolo Soleri and Frank Lloyd Wright as well as many new and up-and-coming artists.
Treat yourself, see some art.
Thatonegirl
This place is so wonderful to visit! I love how they have a mix of visual and interactive art. The art work that they display is powerful and captivating.
Teppo Dama
I love it. The Infinity Room, in particular, is one of the most impressive installations I've experienced. Start there, and it will change the way you engage the rest of the exhibits.
Brandon Brooksby
Fantastic small art gallery! Takes little time to see it all, but well worth it especially considering the extended amount of time it is free to visit every week!
Antonio Simon
Fun art museum that they constantly update. Every trip is always a new experience. The gift shop has cool items too.
Ben Slivka
Small museum, some pretty weird art. But one exhibit had three ping pong tables open for play by visitors!
Erin McMonagle
Really wonderful small contemporary art museum. Fantastic programming. Very worth a visit.
PG Raddi
I wish there was more to see. But what was there to see was very interesting considering that it was a free exhibition. I really enjoyed the gravity chairs that will literally send you spinning.
Jose
Great exhibitions, loved the glass section of the museum. This place is quite small though, and you can kinda of fly through it rather quickly.
Charles Tombazian
The evening as a celebration paled in comparison with past Smoca Nites. Cake and a free drink were fine. But the atmosphere lacked enthusiasm and excitement. Videos were mostly just weird avant garde.
Summer
Small but unique. It's free. I think they have different themes throughout the year.
Marco Meza
I'd enjoy it The museum very much!, its small place but great art exhibitions; the staff so nice and kindlles whit everyone.
evelyn valdez
Thursdays are free! It's always interesting to see the revolving artist in the gallery spaces. The staff are always welcoming and incredibly friendly.
Priscilla
I had a great experience. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the exhibits. There was also a variety of artwork on display.
Priscilla W.

Visited Oct 17, 2013 specifically to see the Terrell nightscape installation, it was everything a Canadian photographer/artist, Andre Cornellier, had told me. I enjoyed the several art exhibits especially the kinetic and light display and the Japanese calligraphy. The nearby courtyard and eateries were reasonable, enjoyed some great chocolate gelato! SMOCA was so worth the drive from Tucson! Certainly will visit again, I especially enjoy modern and contemporary art.
John FLISS / StellarChi
Visit here ! Enrich your life. Culture is fun for the entire family.
Bradley Dennis
I love this place. I always feel kinda retro future when I visit this museum. I enjoy Scottsdale too. I often miss the contemporary abstract art from the 1980s.
Matt Pierson
A nice (but small) gallery. Reserve tickets ahead of time to avoid the wait.
C R
The experience was lovely for the Smithsonian FREE museum day, but I would love it if they had more art pieces.
F M
Interactive and sensory art kept every member of the family engaged. Please visit the gift shop for famous women "rulers" for your favourite girls for school.
Blessed Beyond Measure (Blessed&Favored)
Engaging, and provocative yet, informal and relaxed. My entire family, ranging from ages 4 and 6, to 46 thoroughly enjoyed our time here!
Jonathan Martine
Nice and small location. Not a lot of walking to do. The art there is truly spectacular. You can spend a lot of time there despite the small size.
Alex Christensen
While the exhibits here always fascinate and the gift shop has so much cool stuff, I’ve never been here when they’ve had more than 2 exhibits open.
Steven Grove
Short and sweet. The 'lounge' area sort of feels like leftover space, not well utilized, while the rest of the building displays a surprising amount of content for such a small building.
Johnathan Baird
Really cool space. A bit small, and probably varies in entertainment factor based on the current exhibits. The immersive technology exhibit was really cool.
Tarah Ausburn
If you can go while they have the light display, DO IT! They only give you four minutes to be in there, which kind of sucks, but that alone is worth the trip.
Josh K
Ocean of lights is what brings everyone in. Hit on Thursday and entry is free. The other exhibit is modern art
Josh Stavenjord
Not as well advertised as it needs to be, it's a gem at the core of Scottsdale. With new exhibits all the time it's a part of the sleepier side of old town that shouldn't be passed up
Elaine Tobias
Fortunately it was free entrance day. Art is appreciated individually, and we each have our likes. I guess I'm not a contemporary art appreciator.
Kathy B
We had a lot of fun at the Museum of Modern Art in Scottsdale. There's a couple new exhibits that are interactive and really fun!
cgyro14
Very cool exhibits and the docents we're very knowledgeable as well! They even have us great tips on driving routes that proved very helpful!!

CaptainKat Ricca
Only had 3 exhibits, took maybe a half hour to see everything. But the spinny chairs were awesome
Jackie Rifkin
Best museum in town, all Contemporary art, fun, very helpful staff , great gift shop, shows change every season, many events for all ages
Tad C. Niemyjski
We were dissapointed. It was much smaller than expected with only three exhibit halls. We were glad that they were free that day because it took hardly an hour to spend with the art.
Rebekah Mac Lean
It's ok. Kind of sparse but the exhibits they did have were interesting. Seemed to have a lot of empty space.
Mike
Date night here and I really enjoyed the interactive art pieces! I'm not really an art guy, but the interactive displays were memorizing!
Alejandro Navarro
Great exhibits. The kids ended up having a great time. Enjoyed the overall experience!

They were updating exhibits. Only had video exhibit which we skipped. I lady told me video exhibit was rather good.
Jayant Kumar
Wonderful Belkis Ayon show from Cuba.
Joe Blow
What is this place? I can't decide whether to be under- or overwhelmed. Lots of confusing exhibits and people. But afterwards I got to eat oranges and look at the stars with my friends so 5/5
Erik Anderson
Small and interesting place to stop by if you're in old town Scottsdale. There's many times when it's free to enter so look them up before heading over.
Kevin Brannin

The native Inuit art was interesting but the artist who painted in the Acid Baroque collection were interesting to look at but the meaning was very blaise.
Laurie Haskett

Very modern avant garde works. The musical exhibit made up out of recycled gun parts was the most interesting.
Andrea Moening
Less of a museum and more of a exibit, still fun, the infinity room is not for people who are prone to migraines 😅 …
Devon Bowsher
Much smaller than I expected. Infinity Room was interesting but the 4 minutes allotted was not enough to experience it.
Ramon G MD
Very nice and quite space. Hopefully it will grow to be a splendid museum.
Andrew Ryan
This was so much fun! Visited in a day it was free, but would have been worth every penny!
