Reviews of The Newark Museum of Art

The variety and diversity of art on display in the Newark Museum makes it a very worthwhile place to visit. The museum is much larger than expected, and is subdivided into different art styles and periods. The staff are great and helpful. I would suggest putting aside a few hours to go through the entire thing, especially if you are a thorough art enthusiast. I will definitely be going back again once the other wings open up once more! FYI - cheaper to pay in cash for your admission!

Had an absolute blast spending an entire day here. All happened inadvertently when there was a small snowstorm. Easy access from EWR airport with a quick bus ride. So many exhibits and don’t forget to check out the attached buildings and the main building. The docents are super knowledgeable and the tour was fantastic. The planetarium was a ton of fun as well. Loved every minute of it and couldn’t imagine spending 5 hours at a museum before but with the bad weather outside, this was the perfect plane to take an in-depth look at every artifact and gallery.

Went for child’s birthday party. I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness of the planning the staff put into the party. I’ve been going to the Newark museum for years. But this was the first time I had ever experience a child’s gathering there. I highly recommend it for parents that are looking for imaginative creative and educational spaces to have parties. Coloring fish and having them project it on the wall here there and on the other side of the globe at the same time was a magical activity The children absolutely loved. Along with the activity in the museum’s planetarium.

Great museum!! A must visit If you are visiting this area! Not that big, but you can tell all the arts are carefully arranged/displayed in a logic order, which really make the understanding of the arts easier. Also, make sure you join the 1pm free tour!!! Betty was very nice and teaching type guide. She would ask you how you think of the arts first before explaining her understanding to you. Her interactive style of tour is so much more inspirational and you won’t lose attention easily.

Wow, I lived in Newark for a while never thought of going to this museum. I visited it for the first time and let me tell you that it was amazing, well put together galleries and organized, unfortunately, the Mansion was closed due renovation until next year. I will have to come back.

A local landmark with several locations to choose from within the venue couples can enjoy both indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception options, with a special getting ready area, and friends and family always enjoy walking through the exquisite exhibits taking in the art, paintings, and sculptures.
The refined style of the Ballantine House with its rich oak paneling and elegant lighting is perfect for an intimate wedding, and often a popular choice for a getting ready room. The curved doorway leading into the sitting area provides a gorgeous backdrop for getting ready and bridal portraits.
Every couple wants their wedding day to be a work of art; however, at the Newark Museum, your day can truly be a masterpiece.

This museum is good for family bonding. They have a lot of activities for the children and parents. The planetarium is little and the holographic is good enough. They have engaging activities and the staff showing the constellations at the planetarium is interacting with the visitor. He made me remember the constellations I almost forgot. The museum is not that big so 2-3 hours of museum activity is enough. I love their Asian collection located on the 2nd floor. The ticket is not pricey. I'm living in New Jersey so I got a free ticket.

Free weekend Tours at 1pm by friendly, fun experts! What Newark Museum of Art may lack in priceless masterpieces compared with other international city museums it more than makes up for with its beautiful curation, interior design and staffing. From ancient, through romantic, impressionism, modernism and post-modern and so many forms; sculpture, fabrics, even animated projections! All carefully organized into one cohesive and moving experience. Best experienced with the expert tour guides, Betty designed a special themed tour for us on Labor Day weekend that led us through pieces by local artists that celebrated the labor movement over the tumult of the last two centuries in the Newark area, from the Ashcan School via Joseph Stella to brilliant contemporary local artists like Bisa Butler and Willie Cole, pointing out themes that the excellent descriptions helpfully printed on the walls could not possibly fully convey. Enormous Elevators big enough for wheelchairs. Optional masking Sep 2022. Bags allowed.

The museum hosts a wide variety of exhibits, covering ancient to modern eras, nature as well as culture, and different world regions. It features various artists in addition to famous ones such as Sargent, O'Keeffe, Cassatt, Rothko. And it had displays of exotic themes such as Tibet and Native America. The museum is quiet which I really enjoyed.

We travelled from PA to Newark for a visit to the museum. TravelAdvisor says it is the biggest museum in NJ, though not likely accurate, It is worth your visit as a museum fan. The African collection, the Tibetan Buddhism collection, and the meditative section were a highlight. Some of the modern arts works are very beautiful too. It was fun talking to the staff at the museum. The museum is a lot bigger than from outside. We got the admissions through AAM membership and a guest pass. Do check out the website for free admit opportunities.

I've been here many times before and enjoyed every exhibit, however, on this visit I was looking to keep a toddler busy on a rainy day and was not disappointed.
There were educational toys, a painting session, a Lego etc room and the planetarium. A good time was had by all and an afternoon nap was in order for grandma and the toddler. 😆
Lillian Velazquez
Went on a Friday afternoon..was basically empty. 👍 From reception and all the way through staff was helpful and pleasant. Exhibits def. captivated my attention. My two favorite were Bisa Butler And Native Artists of N America. I spent abt 2.5 hrs there.
Gift shop was nice to browse, but as with most museum gift shops it was a bit pricey. Atleast for me. I'm recommending all my friends to visit.
Jennifer
I hadn’t been here in awhile, but it looks even better than I remembered! The Billie Holiday exhibit is definitely worth checking out as well as the Buddhist temple. I’ll be back! I might even renew my membership.
Ankita Sunilkumar
Free if you live in Newark! Very charming, not crowded so you can take your time. Ballantine house is closed for 2022, but it is a beautiful window to the rich houses in the past. Must visit.

Went to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration! Didn't make it in enough time to catch all festivities.. but, it was great what I did catch. It felt warm, diverse, with good music in background. The staff was friendly, too. I'll be back! 🤍 …

This is a jewel in the heart of Newark! I has no idea Newark has a museum and I’m glad I decoded to go. It is absolutely beautiful, has 3 floors with different exhibitions, the interior design is super cute and it’s location is perfect and very accesible. Loved it! Highly recommended!
Daniel James
Really nice Museum with a good variety of exhibits and artifacts from wildlife to ancient cultural history. Highly recommended!
Ranadheer Purupati
Nice little museum in Newark. Some of the exhibits we're closed, but still a lot of good mix of art and history on display.
John Taranu
Outstanding mid-sized museum, a true gem. An endlessly interesting and varied collection, brilliantly curated and brought to life with modern and historical context. Beautiful pieces from cultures and eras all around the world.
Sharyn Scarafile
Amazing place! Very quiet and so much to see! My son is almost 7 and had a really great time.
Ruben Fair
Absolutely superb place. The Billie Holiday exhibition was marvellous - it’s a travelling exhibition - next stop Baton Rouge.

I was born and raised and New Jersey -- with us being so close to NYC sometimes places like Newark Museum of Art gets overlooked. Truth is it's one of my favorite places to visit in Newark. You could spend all day here and still more to come back and experience. If you live in the area there's always an event that engages the community (and it's free for Newark residents). This was my first time visiting since the pandemic and with only 2hrs to make my rounds before closing I was completely moved by the newest exhibits. Even with some construction underway each space was enticing!
Matthias Bonnici
We really liked the exhibits, and were surprised by the range of the collections. We had a good time looking at everything, well worth the visit!
David Ross
Fantastic collection in spacious and thoughtful galleries. Had a marvelous time walking around here on a Saturday afternoon. Staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful.
EDIT: visited again one year after this initial review.
This is truly an incredible institution, with a world class collection, and marvelously curated galleries. Cannot say enough about this place. Bring your friends.
Cecilia Chung
Free entry for Newark residents. Nice, cool, and with different exhibits to contemplate.
S Parker
I had a lovely experience at the Newark Black Film Festival. The short film program has really great choices from documentaries, dramas and the experimental.
Taca Feline
A very wonderful museum well worth a visit. The Ballantine house is a nicely restored Victorian era home attached to the museum. A nice assortment of Asian, African, European and American art. There is a parking lot right next to the museum. A cafe is being installed. There is a planetarium also within the building. Great place to spend a day.
Benjamin Farr
Eclectic and fun! There's some great surprises in here and lots to do for kids. My only gripe is that the weekend activity on Saturday was far, far too loud. I could barely hear the front desk staff over the speakers.
Kevin Keegan
A very pleasant museum right in Downtown Newark. Regional exhibitions, and intimate permanent galleries. Easy to stroll through. Nice lobby atrium. Great gift shop with unique merchandise. Friendly staff. Some sections are closed off during the Summer months, but worth a trip. Close to transit options.
Mercedes Mckenzie
Three levels made up the museum.
We arrived an hour before closing, although we could have used another 30 minutes.
Also, going during the week is a great time because it's not at all busy. Some of the
exhibits are still ongoing.
Dudley Antoine
Nice variety of exhibits throughout the museum. Went on a Sunday and the staff was friendly for the most part. Only thing that was annoying was when we went into the museum shop, the cashier didnt say hello or even acknowledge us. She just kept chatting with her friend who was a Pastor. I only say that because every employee who walked in she kept introducing them to her friend who was a Pastor. The Pastor wasnt spending any money. We were.
Nassau Tate
A nice assortment of displays and artifacts for the size of the museum. The planetarium leaves a bit to be desired but would be good resting spot when visiting with little ones. Also can't beat the price. Lots of parking available. Will be returning.
Richard Bagarozy
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because one section on the second floor was closed. But the Newark museum of art is free for Newark residents, the science exhibits are extremely entertaining and uplifting, and there are different genres of art so that just about everyone should have a good time.
Vincent Nocito
A very good museum well worth a visit. The Ballantine house is a nicely restored Victorian era home attached to the museum. A nice assortment of Asian, African, European and American art. There is a parking lot right next to the museum. A cafe is being installed. There is a planetarium also within the building. Great place to spend a day.
Raymond Ellis
This is a great museum. I especially liked the Seeing America exhibit. The Native Artists and Ancient Mediterranean exhibits were also interesting. I also enjoyed the Arts of Global Africa collection. Finally, the Ballantine house and the exhibits on display there, especially the "Sterling" silver exhibit were great, as well.
Janna Ellis (Weyrcat)
They pack a LOT into a small, oddly shaped space, without feeling cramped at all! Organized by culture, you can snake your way through the world's art, see the featured exhibit on 2, then hop back up to play in the small but very well made nature center. The Ballantine House is part of the museum and actually attached. You enter from inside, on the first floor. Much like other historic houses of its day, but cool to see it absorbed by a museum!
The shop is nice (no pins or patches), parking is $10, and no cafe (yet, being built now).
Grounds includes an outside loop with somber sculptures and a historic schoolhouse for parents that started the board of education in Newark. Also, a Fire Museum (that was unfortunately closed when I tried to go).
Brian Hornak
My 1st time...a HIDDEN Gem...GORGEOUS architecture..Fully ADA accessible..the planetarium and the 3rd floor are a MUST.... $10 admission.... you would be foolish not to visit
Gigi
I came here for an art final. It was nice and quiet. You got to see a wide range of artwork from various artists. Some you haven't even heard of. It's small, but you get to so entranced by the art that it seems like you've been there for a while. If you love art, this is a great place to go. Especially if you're a Kean student and you need to go to an art museum for a project or final.
A Villalobos (Dash)
Super cool.
I’ve been to this museum 3 times in the last month. I’m not impressed with the remodel it still looks a bit run down. Desk woman is not friendly.
However the layout, the pieces in the museum, and the museum itself are gems. I’ve brought a couple of friends to the museum and they were very impressed by the exhibits.
The staff that work within the museum are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I am also happy that residents and students get in free.
Krystall Bhall
I hadn't been there in years. I took my 3 yr old niece for the 1st time & she really enjoyed it. We both did. They have some exquisite displays of art & many other things. It's a great place for an outing for people of all ages. I'm going back real soon.
Nancy L
How did I not know how great this place is? It is huge and filled with all kinds of interesting exhibits from different cultures and time periods. There is even a restored house inside it. We probably only saw 2/3 of it. We will have to come back. The staff is friendly. They have a AAA discount. The museum shop is nice. Also there is a small sculpture garden and old schoolhouse in back.
Joanne Holley
The exhibits were beautiful and outstanding representing many cultures and enjoyed seeing so many young people working at the Newark Museum of. Art preparing to continue the work.

It was an interactive learning experience for the family. The enjoyed the exhibits and participating in the projects.

I had an unexpected day in Newark after a missed flight connection and was blown away by the quality and diversity of collections at the museum. I arrived in time for a free short guided tour of permanent collections which was a lovely introduction. Only wish I'd made more time to see everything!
Jasmine Farahat
Our Upward Bound students received a guided tour. We discussed the composition and elements in a painting that contributed to it's mood and meaning. The tour's art theme was lighting. The tour ended in a quick sketch activity that encouraged our students to draw and learn about highlights regardless of their artistic ability. There was a spacious area for our group to eat lunch. The planetarium was fantastic. Our show was about Egyptian constellations and telling time with the Stars. Make sure you seat opposite of the entrance door on the back row or you might have to bend your neck uncomfortably to view the show. I think the museum is amazing on what it has to provide. I am hoping to return on my own time to explore more.
Mark Wickham
This is a place my father and grand parents used to visit so taking my family to see it was a great experience. The museum is larger than it appears and has quite and extensive Tibetan collection. The attached Ballentine house has been restored further and the rooms have been decorated in Victorian fashion. While visiting don't forget to see the fire museum and old school house located in the park behind it.
Darth Szarych
I love this museum. I took my partner here last week and we were both blown away not only by the art work, but also by how well curated it was. I definitely recomend visiting this museum.
RoxAnne White
I haven't been to this museum in a long time. I forgot how beautiful and inspirational it is. The parking is on premise and I never had to leave the lot to enter the museum that captured my heart again. I was so glad I came, the show was fun, lively and me want to support the museum more.
Carolyn Weddell
Exquisite collection. We particularly enjoyed the curated African objects, the marvelous special mountain art exhibit featuring Bierstadt et al, and the fascinating AND beautiful Ballantine House (the beer folks!). If you haven't been: GO.
Greg Huggins
This was my first time there and it was an enjoyable experience. The museum was beautiful and could compete with any of the big museums in NYC.
Monifa Kincaid
Beautiful curation. We spent most of our time in the American Masters area on the second floor. Staff was great and the place is completely wheelchair accessible.
Richard Loperena
We had a great time with the kids.
They loved the interactive exhibits.
Friendly and helpful Staff !!
Cathrin Ksl
Excellent customer support, quick responses, and the most affordable price possible. The technician arrived on time and was polite. strongly advised!
Lemuel
Beautiful building, great ilumination and cute expositions. A little bit overpriced for the whole experience, but very well maintained.
KC
Newark museum is quaint for a rainy day. It had some interesting art pieces. Deceptively bigger than it looks.
Esther Lewars
The Newark Museum has a great summer day camp for school-aged children. Each session runs weekly with the option to sign up for multiple weeks. My two little ones attended a couple years ago and they had a great time. They still have some of the artifacts that they created. The only draw back for working parents is there is no before or after care.
I also recently attended the 43rd Annual Newark Film Festival in the museum garden with my kids. For this event, Queen of Katwe was the featured movie and the Newark Chess Club was the partnering organization. The atmosphere was relaxing and the event was well organized. Overall, my two kids enjoyed the free popcorn and playing chess against other children and adults.
Jeremy England
I got 5k steps walking around the place. Neat art and not as crowded as bigger museums, so a much more personal feel. Oddly enough, I remember my shoes sounded nice while walking the place. The current Christmas themed market in the middle have reasonable prices and neat, unique items for sale.
William Myers
My visit here was amazing. This place is a gem. I also visited the planetarium and the Ballantine Mansion. The staff were all very friendly and polite. This museum has an amazing collection; the American art was probably the highlight of my time here, but there is also a wonderful collection of Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities. You must plan to stay here several hours at a minimum.
Justbeing ME
A beautiful service was held here for my friend who unexpectedly pass. Thr place was clean and service was amazing.. staff was friendly and descent parking
Robert Drake
The Newark Museum is a hidden jewel among metro tri-state museums. The museum has great non European collections, especially African and Asian, and they're in the midst of a 20th century re-install.
They've also a planetarium and an exhibit outlining the history of ecology in New Jersey.
Then there's the mansion. If you want to experience fin-de-siecle opulence, come visit. They've preserved it as a monument to early 20th Century wealth.
The staff curators and docents are really friendly. You can get around in a wheelchair but it will take a little effort.
It's a great visit Indeed.
Julie Mallory
Went to see local quilter Bisa Butler's quilt, The Warmth of Other Sons, but arrived unexpectedly during her tv interview. Saw an amazing Adinkra art piece and bottle top wall hanging instead! Will return later for Butler's quilt.
Bhupesh Bora
Good museum right in rye heart of the city. Thanks for BofA was free entry, we enjoyed the place and the planetarium I side.
Jeff Clarke
I had a fantastic time on my visit! And speaking to the head educator about the fossils found in New Jersey made all the more superb. Have to go again!
christopher lucas
As a caterer this venue is absolutely fantastic. As a patron this is an absolute gem in newark to visit! I highly recommend this a a place to visit with your family.
Robyn Klopp
Fantastic museum with great people! I was waiting for an evening flight out of Newark and decided to spend the day at the museum. The kind folks at coat check held my suitcase and the front desk person recommended a classic diner for lunch.
They had several special exhibits on and I found their call out of the history of American slavery in art to be very thoughtful.
Janet Clark
The Newark Black Film Festival is there and the while the Festival is awesome- very nice T-shirts BTW the parking service was horrible. Nobody was there and there is an app ypu have to sign up for that contacted me 1 hour into the event that parking was up. Should I run out and see if they are booting my car, Newark doesn't play!!!!
White knuckled it and car was fine, but I do hope they change providers. it says $10 bucks for parking and that should be it.
Festival was a another annual gem! We stayed for the Q&A until they made us leave :-)
David McBriar
Staff is very friendly, overall inviting atmosphere and a very clean look. I would highly recommend this museum for college students.
Shravankumar Hiregoudar
It's a well maintained museum showcasing African and American culture. Free for the students

Phil Silverstein
Great museum! We come here every year. Always something new . The Balintine House had a special exhibit when we were here.
Jonathan B
Nice museum. Friendly staff and interesting collections. Especially enjoyed the Asian exhibits.
April Appleton
Recommended! What a place to visit with kids or friends! I was really impressed, beautiful statues, paintings, and more.. A must-visit place in 2022 (if you haven't been there yet), you won't regret! I think you will 100% love it if you are interested in art. On the other hand, if you aren't - you will! It was a great day and a great experience!
Rosangela Brito
Wonderful experience! Great way to spend a day out with family or friends. Museum was clean, spacious with wonderful exhibits. Staff was friendly and courteous. I was absolutely in awe of Bisa Butler's work. I was pleasantly surprised to learn she is a New Jersey native. I will be back again. Five stars.
Ora Allen
It's small, but that's the good thing about. It it doesn't suffocate you because there's too many things, but you'll turn a corner and there's a new surprise there.
James Stewart Jr
Great place to bring the older kids, safe area, large gift shop with some unusual items
Ana Paula
Had my wedding here, Erin and the crew treated us amazing! Definitely recommend! Every corner made for amazing pictures and memories.
suzie queen
Very nice museum filled with lots of art. Spacious, not crowded, clean, restrooms are super clean and located on every floor. I didn't get the see the whole museum in one day. Will need a second visit.
Rashida Vines
The Newark Museum was amazing! I took my nephews and mom with me. The kids had never been to a museum before! They loved it! It's such a great place to visit! Please go...and take the kids!
Richard Garcia
I am personally not interested in Art but I found this museum Entertaining. The Museum was reasonably priced and had a large selection of art from many different culture. Museum is free for Newark residents.
Kurt H.
This is the best museum that I've been to. It may not be a big as the MoMA, but it has the same impact with much, much, fewer people/crowds. Selections are curated well. I enjoy visiting the Balls time House and the Monk temple. Recently they opened up a Natural history project that spans the entire 3rd floor. It is definitely worth a visit all by itself. You can easily fill an entire day with just museum. I believe the Balls time House is being renovated right now, but there is still lots more, with even more on the way, including a new eatery. Best part of all is that it is free for Newark residents. That being said, it's a good idea to leave a little donation. My daughter and I can make it a daily stop after school let's out to do some fun learning. Love, love, love this museum.
Raúl Ortiz
Amazing museum! 100% recommended
Edward Espino (txboyinnyc)
Lots of Egyptian, Roman and Greek Mediterranean stuff! Which I love! Plus installations, Galleries and more.

Joe Messina
Nice art museum in the heart of Newark. Definitely worth a visit
R.O. Lovelace
Really cool time there. Value for sure.
Austin Kleyn
My favorite part was the Balanchine House. I would give five stars for that, although it was closed last time I went. Outstanding collection of Asian art. However, I had to take a star off due to the fact that the artifacts in the Asian collection have very generic dates, ranging over hundreds of years. That seems a bit sloppy compared with the Met.
Amina Shamil
It was okey. There is not so much places to see in Newark, so I guess it will be good idea to go there
peter liu
great musuem especially the animal kindom, Kids live it so much.
Belinda Harris
Spent most of my time in the Ballentine House but the visit was awesome.
Teresa Mansbach
Fun place but too many galleries were under construction. The 2nd floor painting galleries are amazing. I just wish there was more and more things were open
jeff casto
Very nice variety and awesome Buddhist Art floor.
Vanessa Diaz
Loved the artwork and the range of diverse artists. Not too big of a museum, easily seen in under 3 hours. Was sad the Ballentine house was closed. That's one of my favorite exhibitions!

Mike Dory
Great museum, and awesome staff. And as I just discovered, a sweet new maker space!
Joe O
Quite a vast collection from many eras. Visited on Bank of America Museums on Us weekend.
Peggy Sacher
This museum is a gem. The exhibits have excellent objects beautifully displayed. The extra information is thoughtful. Don't miss the Tibetan section! The staff, including the guards, is the most helpful and knowledgeable of any museum I have ever been in. There is a convenient pay parking lot and some free on-street parking.
Joshua South
We visited here on a Saturday in July, and we happened to arrive right when it opened. The front desk and surrounding area is bright, open, and clean. We were greeted cordially by the staff. We spent two hours here, but because we had something else on our schedule that day we had to leave sooner than we would have liked. We could have spent at least another hour here. There were entire areas that we didn’t even see. If you really want to admire and take in all the museum has to offer, I recommend that you set aside 3-4 hours for your visit.
Yuribel Alejo
Biggest museum in New Jersey! It holds a variety of collections and it’s definitely a must go if you find yourself in Newark.
Mario Barrientos (MJBU)
I love this museum, it deserves more recognition, it's the biggest museum in NJ and it has a huge collection. Please go visit
Vivian Cabrera
It was a privilege to be at the Newark Museum of Art. It was surprised to see a mix of Art...thought it was all contemporary pieces in America. It was soooo much more. Staff is friendly. Didn't get to see the entire museum...must go back
Sam Roberts
Great time, and the tour of the Ballantine house was very informative
Jim Mandala
Unusually eclectic museum with world class collection. Make sure you get a map or you can easily miss some of it. The remodeling was well done with an eye for little details that show off the architecture. Make sure you check out the temporary exhibits since they are expertly assembled. I just saw "Beyond Zen", about Buddhism in Japan. It was fantastic.
The whole museum is well curated in spite of the collection being so diverse. The"maker space" provides hands on activities for children. There's a fine collection of Asian art, American art, African art, small collections of Roman and ancient Egyptian, a planetarium, fire fighting history, Earth science, a Victorian mansion, and an outdoor sculpture garden.
Give yourself lots of time. I have found the docents very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, do get on a tour if you can.
MariaBlue 19
Very elegant. A very calm and welcoming atmosphere. Nice for the children. The planetarium is fun. We loved the different exhibits they had on display and on the third floor we had a whole science class just from observstion. We loved it any will return again soon.
Henry Cardona
Had a great time at the movie showing of "Nanny".
Kerl Yne
Went to see solar eclipse here. Nice that they had an event for it. Not sure if they have parking which would be nice.
Rizer Fusion Dude
The museum is the best place for me to observe art culture, animals, the document of America History and Science, and they had a gift shop to buy gifts even the cafeteria from upstairs so you could chat with other people while you eat. I enjoy my first time here and I can't wait to visit again!
Kaveena Miller
My boyfriend and I went here to check out the planetarium and ended up checking out the entire museum. The staff were so nice to us and pleasant and such a clean place. I would recommend going here for a nice quiet date or if you want to take your family to the planetarium. There weren't a lot of people so we were able to really appreciate the museum. We had a great experience and definitely will be back again.
Ariel Smith
It was a super dope vibe

If you’re just passing through Newark, live in Jersey or a resident of the Renaissance City, this is a must go to. I loved taking trips here as a kid and that love has only grown. They have some amazing exhibits and they are always hosting great events. I highly recommend visiting.
Christopher Cavallaro
Wonderful MLK Day nice art, nice play, nice people.
Isabelly Arruda
anyone visiting or living in Newark should know that the museum is very organized and the people are lovely. at the museum we learn many things. everyone must go

As an educator, I have been here close to 35 times! Love it each and every time! This time around, the craft was unbelievable- best yet! Planetarium is a great addition as well! Tour guides are very informative and the pieces vary greatly! The Ballentine house is always something special as well, especially around the holidays when it’s decorated to its time period! A must go!

Imagine the quality of the Smithsonian but without crowds, plus the benefit of a super-friendly staff. My family went to visit the Museum this past Sunday and were blown away by the diversity of the art on display as well as Ballantine House but the staff was just as amazing. We were all made to feel welcome, that they appreciated us just for coming but really we were so glad that we took the time to visit. What a gem! Again, the staff just made the whole thing that much better. They were enthused about art as much as we were and it showed. Thanks for a great day!
Lateicha McMillan
My children absolutely love this museum and have since they were 2 and 4 years old. They are now 14 and 16. The museum offers a planetarium, drop in activities, and exhibits that will interest the entire family. There is also a special section for younger children. While you are there you should also tour the beautiful Ballantine House.

Staff is very friendly and helpful. Tibetan art is the best. Chinese collection exceeds expectations

My wife & I visit museums all over the world & I was surprised to find such a gem nestled in Newark, NJ!
Knowledgeable, friendly, & helpful staff. It has an insightful collections of paintings, sculptures & cultural artifacts spanning mostly American, Native American, Asian, African, Egyptian, Greek, & Roman art. And its free to Newark residents!
There's a space w/ activities & thoughtfully designed games 4 families & children. There's a Planetarium, outdoor sculpture garden, & even interesting facts about the history of Newark itself.
Remodeled, it's architecturally interesting, a great space to host an event, & much larger than you first might imagine; thought not too dauntingly to tackle in one full day. I love museums, so I opted to visit multiple days to learn & enjoy everything @ a more leisurely pace.
Originally a geek from Jersey City, I'm slightly embarrassed that I never even knew the Newark Museum of Art was there!
Definitely deserving to sit atop any "things to do in Newark" list. I'd highly recommend a visit to everyone & encourage locals to get a membership!
Patricia Thomas
The Newark Museum is always doing something innovative.
This evening I visited the museum for the opening of the 'Wendy Red Star' exhibition and they had a very nice Members Cocktail Party and opening of the exhibit. They really did a nice job. We even got to meet the artist.
The museum is always trying to create different venues for the patrons and this exhibition showed the artists life from childhood until now and the changes that the laws on the Reservations have done to the people that live there. It was interesting to see the progression.
The opening party was very nice and the caterer did a good job with the food. It was just a nice evening oul
Janet Roman
We like to go to the programs they offer a lot, and it was really hard this past year to not be able to attend. We appreciate everything they've been trying to do to keep our kids engaged, though, and we're excited to come back!
Deepa Nayak
We love coming here with our family. The exhibits are varied and interesting. The planetarium is always fun and educational - at the end of the shows the curator takes the time to go through the current astronomical sky so that we can use the knowledge that same day (night). On Saturdays there's usually family friendly programming/tours that make the museum accessible and fun for kids. We love Newark Museum!
Cynthia Doughty
The museum represents a wonderful story of history. I enjoyed viewing the quilts designed by Bisa Butler.
James Grier
Very friendly atmosphere, I enjoyed the whole experience
Ammon Turner
Currently there's a Native American exhibit installed. I was lucky enough to be at the opening and got a chance to listen to the music and watch some dancing. The rest of the exhibits are well worth the trip as well. I can't wait to go back for the planetarium.
Dana Martinez
A place where I used to visits with my boys! A lot of amazing things to learn. They have workshops and also have activities for the kids & families. You will definitely learn a thing or 2 that you never knew. Behind the museum they have a fire house that's awesome to visit along with a school with school furniture &supplies from years ago so u can see how kids used to attend school. Great Place FREE for Newark Residents

Located in the downtown district of Newark this Museum offers beautiful sculptures and paintings from different places, and cultures. A personal favorite of mine is the Ballatine House, a national landmark that transports you back into the history and glory of Newark.
Nice size, you can complete the tour of the facility with a business day. Daily activities for families and children also featuring a planetarium show with the purchase of additional tickets. Two gift shops and cafe are sure to please!
Great place to visit if you love art, culture and new interpretations.
trouvaillesaurabh
Worth going once, and if ur a student u get discount on the ticket

Loved the after dark adult party on Thursday
Norah Gharala
A thoughtful collection worth the visit. We saw a few installations with strengths in African and American art and a special exhibition by Wendy Red Star. There are also science exhibits. Curation provides necessary information but isn't distracting from the art. The museum is well lit and has elevators and a parking lot.
Janet Furness
Awesome display related to Covid on 2nd floor. Powerful.
LaKendra Huckaby
Very educational museum although I was rather disappointed with how small the African exhibit was in contrast to others. I'm hoping they expand it some day soon. My family and I also purchased tickets to the planetarium and it was absolutely lovely. I definitely recommend visiting if you're in the area!
Kaleena Koon
Arts n Crafts on the Weekends for the kids .. Interactive exhibits. Diamond in the rough.
Margaret Berrios
Its wonderful that they let college students in with free admissions! The art collection is glorious with very helpful guides to tell you information on the history of the collection.
Lauren Walker
A real cultural hub. The exhibits don't disappoint. The staff is helpful and courteous. You WILL learn something new or see something of note to share with friends, and acquaintances. Check it out. I even took this picture for myemergency engagement pics here, long story, but they were so accommodating because I have a membership.
William Najar
This is an awesome musewn. Not too many people visit it because is under appreciated. I liked the variety on display and the amazing painting of the masters. They have one of John Singer Sargent that I admired. The staff is very welcoming.
Nino Cosoleto-Miller
Incredible museum. Admission is reasonable, and you get a lot for the price. The highlight for me was the Ballantine House, an exquisitely preserved and maintained example of a well-to-do family household from the Victorian days. Every room was packed with artifacts so we'll preserved (or restored) that it was like going back in time, and the information about the Ballantine family's different daily occurrences in each room so vivid, that I half expected one of them to walk around the next corner. It really was a great treat. The place was so big that I didn't actually get to see it all. It would be my pleasure to return sometime.
Julio Parra-Vega
Awesome place to have a nice evening
Richiedamenace
I enjoyed talking with one of the guards involving technology, history, etc.. I came there to write my museum paper (which I passed). Will come again!
Danielle X
Having leaves in New Jersey all my life in about 20 minutes away, I've never been to the museum. I came here for a film festival and while waiting for my party from parking the car, I got an opportunity to talk to the doorman/greeter. He explained to me the different events that occur yearly at the Museum. I love the atmosphere, and that there's parking on the premises. I will investigate more about the membership fee because I definitely want to become a member
Diana Arias
This place was gorgeous and clean, staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Showcasing some beautiful artwork and rare pieces, I'll need a second trip through to finish all the wings of this museum.
Xhan H.
Yet another museum I visited as part of my art classes’ college assignment. Though small, the museum had a lot of exhibits. The facility was clean and the staff was friendly and polite. The most memorable part of the whole visit was Yinka Shonibare’s Party Time: Re-imagine America. The piece was set around a dining table with headless sculptures dressed in colorful African cloth, absolutely breath-taking!
Sheila massoni
Went there today dec 2 I have been going there since I was in kindergarten I wonder what they did with the big dollhouse I am amateur geologist so enjoyed the way the rock and science room has been redone my husband and I were given a private tour by a very knowledgeable docent every staff member was so friendly and so. Helpful plus clean restrooms so much too see and enjoy
Joseph Toumanios
They hold great events and have really friendly staff. I'm not personally one for museums, but they have a huge variety and detailed exhibits. Some art is truly mesmerizing, but some sections are complete trash.
Bram van der Veen
A hidden gem that is well worth a visit!
M Styles
I adore the Newark Museum, it is one of my favorite places in NJ.
It is a big museum with lots of exhibits, it is usually quite and very clean.
Parking is a breeze and everyone who works there is super nice.
I love this place and I always leave wanting to go right back.
Sue MisoSoup
We really enjoyed coming here. If you are a Newark resident, I believe it is free? Please double check. It has a lot of nice exhibits and I enjoyed the Bastille House. Wow, was that ever stunning.
Joe Warren
Love the exhibits that come through this beautiful building! And the events and spaces are truly awesome. Thanks to The Newark Times for introducing me to this hidden gem of Newark!
Yessenia Lausell
Love it! Clean, calm environment, amazing exhibits and great activities for kids

Newark Museum is the largest museum in the state of NJ. The exhibits are awesome to see. I throughly enjoyed my time there and wish I had more time to explore the whole museum. The only downside to the museum is that the women's bathrooms do not have any garbage bins in the stalls. This creates a problem for females with disposing items.
Maritza Ahmed
Historic treasure in Newark, New Jersey.
Anne Fernandena
Very pleasant space in downtown Newark. Small, but surpringly deep. Excellent specimens of Native American art, especially baskets and pots; good explanation of anthropology importance of pieces; Asian art including Tibetan altar; room tracing Egyptian, Greek, Roman. Friendly staff waiting to meet you. Events for school children.
Kelley Hollander
I came to the museum while waiting for a flight out of Newark. The museum is about 15 minutes from the Newark airport, and they check bags. I checked both a brown paper bag (with food items) and a small gym bag (personal item shoulder bag). The bag/coat check is free and they accept tips. I visited on a Saturday afternoon in December, and it was pretty dead when I got there around 1pm. By the time I left at 3:30pm, there were several families visiting as well.
I spend a solid 3 hours there and wasn’t able to see all the exhibits. There is a planetarium, a historical home (The Ballantine House), several art exhibit halls, and a science exhibit. I started on the bottom floor and saw some art exhibits and the Ballantine House. The historical home was my favorite part - they also had the rooms decorated for Christmas when I visited. I saw a planetarium show ($6 extra per person) about dark matter. It was very informative and lasted about 45 minutes. Next, I visited the special exhibition which was called Kimono Reimagined. It was mostly fashion and textiles - a really cool show! And the only area where pictures weren’t allowed. The last exhibit I saw was the science exhibit upstairs. It went through the oceans, Pangea and tectonic plates, and different energy sources.
I had to skip a few exhibits to see the highlights I wanted. It was definitely worth the trip, and I saw a lot of things I wouldn’t have seen elsewhere. They had a major focus on decorative arts, furniture and household goods. That was really fascinating. Everything was well-maintained. I visited the bathrooms on the first floor and third floor. They were both clean and functional, although outdated. I would definitely go back to this museum!
Note: I was coming from Jersey City and used mass transit to get to the museum, which was extremely easy (PATH train to Newark, Broad Street light rail to Atlantic Street). Also, I used a rideshare service to get to the airport and they were able to pick me up in front of the museum.
Jose miranda
A treasure troll in the middle of Rutgers University and Washington Park the first museum I visited on a school trip, beautiful 🏫 and lots of historical events I recommend ,this museum for children and adults of all ages
Tanvi Gupta
Good experience..
Ilya Kulikov
I really liked the amount of exhibits dedicated to native Americans. It is hard to find that much info on that elsewhere. Asian exhibits are also rich and diverse - I learned a lot of new things, though had a significant exposure to South East Asia some time in the past. And museum is fairly big even depsite nearly a half of that was closed.
Moriah Potts
The new exhibits are very nice. Everyone loves the Ballentine house. Which showcases a wealthy home during the Victorian era. A famous artist helped revamp the dining room by adding a few guest having dinner and making a comical mockery out of manners during that era. Its very entertaining imagining what is actually happening. And the fabric choice of the figures clothing is loud and daring but beautiful all at once.
They also have an exhibit that shows the evolution of a living room and how the usage went from communities as informal and communal and minimalistic with the depletion of agrarian lifestyles to the surge of industrialization that created more privatized and even elititist social norms that reflects in the modernization of the living room/parlor rooms.
Of course the museum has a collection of relics from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt. There is a Tibetan exhibit, an African exhibit, a native American exhibit. There is a section for children to learn healthy saving and spending habits as well as a mini zoo with frogs, reptiles, and bugs. The kid friendly exhibits have been the same for over 10 years but it serves its purpose. To really take in everything you need to go more than once.
They also change the collections frequently. Also there is a planetarium.
J L
We came here for an event they had during the holidays. My children won a gingerbread house that was raffled off. They had refreshments and food which was really nice. We visited the historic home and enjoyed seeing all the antiques.
Jacqueline llivicota
I went here on October 2019, and I really liked it. It was not crowded but it was kind of cold in there. The workers are welcoming and the third floor was so far the most interesting and fascinating.
Naiomy
Never knew Newark had a museum with such gtrst art and history. I came here with a group and they all loved it. The planetarium was a great feature of the museum. There is alot to look at and I was not bored one bit

This place is a hidden gem. Not many people visit this Museum, but the staff there are extremely helpful and sweet mannered. The things to see here are just fantastic and so vast. They have kept the old victorian house as is, so the affluence from that era is visible for everyone to see. People then sure lived in style and people now have taken a lot of effort to maintain it as is. U r surely missing out, if u dont know and then dont visit this place.
Richard Viana
Brought young kids 8 and 5 to the musuem. They had a good time at both the maker room, the wildlife room and the special climbing event in the atrium. Unfortunately, after that (about an hour) the kids wanted to go. It is certainly good for an hour though!
Richard
The people that work their are very nice and friendly
Ann EB
What a pleasant surprise! Newark is probably the last place I expected to find such a wonderful art museum - and no one seems to know about it. We only found out when a neighbor talked us into going. Interesting, well displayed. A nice mix of history and art, and a great building. We will be back again after their expansion!
Zahraa B.
Big improvements since i was a kid. The MLK agenda gets better every year

The Nina Simone Thursday event was fun. There was great music, head wrap tutorials, selfie art projects and delicious bites. I love this museum and look forward to all the events they have.
Hillery Baker
Art, science, and artifacts in a bright and historical building. Their new "What Exit" photography exhibit is fantastic. The museum is large, but not intimidating.
Arline Roman
I went with my 16 yr. old girl. We really had a great time. It may seem to be small but it has a lot to see. The price is reasonable and fair. Ask for student and seniors discount. I will definitely going back.
Naurene Donelly Antoniotti
There's so much in it that you really can't cover it all in one day. would like to go back sometime to hear one of their talks on various topics. The Ballantine house was a real surprised and I particularly enjoyed it. I never realized that that beer started in New Jersey.

Great place to take your kids on the summer I still have some free programs for them to create things and do projects. On our last visit my little one got to make a sculpture out of clay and do a stop motion animation.

Had a good, stimulating experience at the Newark Museum. Enjoyed learning about past traditions, cultures and actual garments worn. Also enjoyed walking through the Ballentine House.
Alan Kuhlman
This is a real gem of a museum and the attached Ballantine mansion is a great bonus. We only wished that the 20th and 21st century American wing had been open. Inexpensive admission and $10 parking....limited hours if noon to 5
ElizaBeth Ann Cronk- Horch
really pleasantly surprised. Great Rockwell retrospective and interesting permanent exhibitions. Well worth the trip. Much more to see than we expected- will have to go back again to finish up.

Tamika Picott
Awesome day time activity!!!! The staff was very courteous and the vendors were wonferful!!
Sharon Dixon
Always enjoy the museum and events. The website could improve though. Inaccurate information regarding dates and times for Planetarium. Also almost impossible to get a live person on the line for information. Unless it's for membership

Our magnificent city of Newark NJ has many wonderful gems and jewels such as the Newark Museum.
I challenge you one and all to take the time, explore, experience and enjoy the many splendors our great city has to offer.
The Newark Black film festival is in full swing.
The entire evening before, during and after the film was phenomenal.
Explore Newark and all its splendors.

The Tibetan altar is my favorite part. My family also enjoy the programs they offer throughout the year. It's very thoughtful of that for us who live in the city to enter for free.
Thomas Bennett
Newark Museum is unfortunately one of the best kept secrets in NJ. I never knew they existed until I went there for business. From their Asia exhibits to their Ballentine House Sterling Silver exhibit to the American Arts collection, there was something of interest throughout. I recommend going to their Hot Chili and Cold Brew event and getting acquainted with this hidden gem in Newark NJ.
paul ciraulo
I attended a jazz performance held in the Museum Garden this past week. It was magnificent, and one of many reasons that I am becoming a Newark Museum member very soon!

Very nice place! My mom use to give a tour there and I went there many times to watch some movies and she took me on a tour too. People are also friendly each time I went to look for her with a limited English back then😂😂. …

Very nice Museum! Much bigger then I thought it would be. A lot of different artifacts from North American, African American, Native American and even some South Asian countries. Also only $15 for admission.

There is always something new and exciting happening at the Newark museum. I try to take advantage of most of the events that they have going on here. Maker Space is a great place to bring kids. It's free to the Newark residents.

Haven't been to the Museum since I was a kid. Well kept and educational. Peter Wright, Manager of Public Programs at the Museum was a wonderful host. Will visit again.
Edwin Mendez
A jewel in the heart of Newark. Beautiful areas for booking an event.

Holding the Mayor Baraka holiday celebration event at the museum was a fabulously unique idea. The opportunity and ability to view art and fellowship with fellow residents and workers was great!

Really nice museum with engaging work. You don't have to go all the way to NYC!
Joyce Judd
I learned about the Newark Museum while working and living in New York in the 1980's.
I was totally impressed. Having grown up in the bottom of New Jersey, the Jersey Shore surrounded by the Pinelands. Museums where not a part of my daily life as it is for Newark Residents. We had to travel To travel to Philadelphia and or NYC. This was great, experience, not the same as when you live amongst such a cultural jewel.
Now I'm a part of this cultural jewel, once a just a Fashion Designer, now Museum Educator and the vision of this jewel is part of my daily life and experience and sharing, informing and educating students, adults and community of it's significance, to all art forms, including fashion.
It's all there, the art, history , literary connection. This learning institution has a spectacular creative and dedicated leadership of this iconic institution the International Newark Museum. I'm proud to be a part of it.

My kids like the planetarium at the Newark Museum. The space is great and the museum is family friendly. It's also great that they allow people to bring in their own food and eat in the cafe.
R McClain
World class museum. Lots of items to see and lots of activities for both adults and children. The Ballantine home is a must see! The house is decorated with appropriate period pieces and items for different holidays.
Craig Corbeels
I came to the Newark Museum for the first time last week, and I've already been back for a second time. The mix of natural history, art, science, and interactive exhibits makes this almost a one stop shop for anything you'd like to see. The art collection is truly impressive, spanning the globe and going back centuries. They have art from some names you may recognize - Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe, among many others. The current featured exhibition, "The Shape of Light" by Gabriel Dawe, is breathtaking. I've never considered myself to be a huge fan of art, but I enjoyed the art sections quite a bit.
I spent most of my time in other sections that were very interesting, including an Egyptian section, African section, Asian section, and Native American section which all featured many different artifacts and items. There is also a Tibetan Buddhist Altar that was consecrated in 1990 by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and was very eye-opening to learn about.
The part of the museum that really stood out for me was The Ballantine House, which was built in 1885 for the Ballantine family (you may recognize their name from Newark's own Ballantine beer). It's a stunningly beautiful Victorian home that you can walk around and explore each room in, and it's connected to the actual museum and included in admission. I would pay the admission cost to see the house alone.
Overall, I had a great experience and learned a lot. There's no way I could include everything in this review. Knowing that there's a museum of this caliber only 10 minutes from where I live is great, and I'll absolutely be back.
Rob Curry-Patel
A fantastic gem in Newark. They have a great collection of contemporary art as well as an extensive collection of asian art (particularly Tibetan). They also host lots of functions in their lobby. If your a local it's free, so be sure to take advantage.
Eric Severson
Wonderful! My favorite wings are the Asian gallery including a Tibetan Altar blessed by the Dalai Lama, the American landscape paintings which feature several splendid works from the Hudson River school, the historic Ballantine House which is a Victorian style home from the late 19th century and the science wing which has gems, geology demonstrations, simulations of a Highland and cave environment and a video on evolution narrated by James Earl Jones. This is my favorite place to go in Newark, fantastic events all year round!
Yolanda Ore
Every experience and event here is always amazing ..I am glad to contribute and look forward to attending many more !!
Divesh J
Really amazing place.
Debasmita Basu
This place can make you happy and sad at the same time. After coming to the United States, all I heard about Newark is its crime rate and poverty, but Newark museum would walk you through the history of the city and make you think how and why Newark moved away from its glory.
GP NJ
There's no place like this museum. World class! Went for jazz in the garden. Excellent
Justin Di' Angelo Quezada
Great museum, so much bigger than you'd think it is from the outside. If you're a student definitely stop in as it's free and is something fun to do on a day off or for a project!
Cassandra Arnold
I absolutely love the mix of modern and traditional art pieces within one theme, for example the African art wing and the Ballentine house. It works!!!! Also, I love ceramics and there are so many examples that addresses all spectrums of taste. Check it out.
jennifer Marquez
Someone to help you at almost every corner. Staff is friendly and helpful. Very clean and new things to do and see often. Newark residents get in for free and that's such a nice thing.
Heather Craig
Awesome! Cheaper to by a membership because your going to want to keep coming back. Friendly helpful staff. Clean restrooms. Great place to be with family & friends.
Charles menifield
This museum is a real gem in Newark. My grand children have spent 45 minutes in the Makers Space with no end in site. So, we will have to return another day.
molly henick
Tremendous museum with an amazingly broad first class collection! This collection includes American, African, Asian classical, decorative along with the sciences. They have a renowned and I think wonderful American art collection, including Sargent, Hopper, Homer, O'Keefe, Calder to name just a few! For families there is the restored 1885 Ballantine House, always decorated for the holidays. The Dynamic Earth Exhibit with its mineral caves, vast specimens from Africa to the north pole, it has a dinosaur foot print from Hillside and interactive exhibits. The Dreyfus planetarium, great family shows and whose exhibit includes a moon rock plus much more! My family always enjoyed the Tibetan wing which has an Alter which was blessed by the Dali Lama, this floor of the museum includes their Asian exhibits. My children's favorite was the Classical collection (neolithic through Roman) which includes an Egyptian mummy and children games!
Jon Bloom
A gem. As deserving of your time as any Manhattan museum. You could spend a day in there, enjoying the Ballantine House, the American collection, and the amazing exhibits they put on.

A gem of a museum located in the heart of Newark. It's a bit smaller than many of the museums in Manhattan but the collection is great and the size can make a visit more manageable and less daunting.

The Newark Museum has a bountiful collection of American, Tibetan, Decorative , Modern, and Natural arts, and a gorgeous restored 19th century mansion housed in multiple spacious buildings. There are smaller collections of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Classical, and Glass art.
These objects are of the highest quality and the museum deserves multiple visits to appreciate all there is to see.

Just go. There is no more accessible and forward-thinking museum available to you. Whatever you think a museum experience ought to be, Newark is all that and more.
Ann Minski
Great visit to one of our favorite local museums. Many changes since the last time we were there.
Monica Reese
Newark Museum has offered a vast array of new events that is allows Newarkers to really embrace this local landmark. I believe when the mayor commissioned the opening of the large steel door in July, that the museum began opening its heart to the city.
Olha Bobko
great place for a family visit
Arley Perez
Pleasantly surprised. Our family loved it!
