Reviews of Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal
Venkat N Reddy Gurrala
You have to visit this place of you want to visit Statue of Liberty. Here you will get tickets. It’s better to book in advance. They will charge one mask for 1$ if you don’t have one. Mask is mandatory.
T. Gafford
This is the historical building that doubles as the Statue City Cruises New Jersey facility owhere we processed through TSA for our disembarkment on the Statue City Cruises New Jersey boats for the Ellis Island & Statue of Liberty Monument Island tour.
Roads Traveled Photography
Yesterday, we took The Ferry to Ellis Island and the State of Liberty boarded at the Historic Central Railroad. Great place to start and finish the day.
The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, also known as Communipaw Terminal and Jersey City Terminal, was the Central Railroad of New Jersey's waterfront passenger terminal in Jersey City, New Jersey. The terminal was built in 1889, replacing an earlier one that had been in use since 1864. It operated until April 30, 1967
Navin Kallolli
Tickets for Statue of liberty ferry rides sold inside here.
In its heyday this was the go to place for making train connections to other parts jersey.
If you go a bit inside, each platform still maintains a list of cities to where the trains used to depart. Fascinating history if you're into this. You will end up eventually seeing the statue of liberty, do spend some time here to soak in a bit of history.
Dharma M
Nice old railroad station. It is the best place to take boat trop to liberty island compare to New York side. The challenge only on getting here from New York city. Very quite and not crowded. It was pretty hot at this side. Not much shade except in the building.
Rob Jelinski
I simply love the arches, vintage, green tin roof tops and freight rail cars. It is beautiful to enjoy from the outside (to snap pictures in front of) or take a tour inside as it is now it is a museum. It is right on the water and you can take in the view of the skyline, catch a ferry to Ellis Island/ Statue of Liberty or walk through the ghostly empty sky 9/11 memorial.
Amy Bowles
Must see while in NY/NJ
Price was cheaper than I anticipated. You could spend 1/2 or a whole day as you have hourly options to take the ferry. We arrived at 930 and it was not crowded.
Jim Schneider
A must see for any train enthusiast. I wish the sheds were renovated and rebuilt to look original as well as laying new track. There are so many pieces of CNJ rolling stock all over the state and this would be the perfect place for them to be seen. So much history there!
Karen Poliski
This amazing jewel of NJ Liberty State Park is a must visit. The historic terminal was the original way folks and goods traveled between NJ and NY before bridges and tunnels. The original port authority, I guess! But so well-crafted and beautiful.
monica stevens
Unfortunately we were too late for the ferry to staten island. But the building is beautiful and kept so clean, it was actually nice seeing it so empty. Gave me spirited away train station vibes.
Paul Pavlinovich
The Statue of Liberty ticket office is inside the brick building. The shelters and ferry docks have seen better days. They were hit hard by Sandy. Fortunately the main building fared well and has been restored. You can only access some areas of the building. There are clean bathrooms. You can get water to top up your water bottle. Wandering around waiting for your ferry departure time is well worth an explore into the past of this once mighty facility.
Agye Danso
Great visit. Recommend leaving from Liberty State Park NJ. Not crowded at all but the NYC departure boat was packed. Was a bit hard to find the security check point but just walk towards the docks to the left of the Parker lot.
Nathan Ramirez
Historic site located inside Liberty State Park, beautiful terminal with fantastic views of downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. It’s a great place to learn about the city’s railways, there is a lot history to be learned within the walls of the terminal and the immigrants who came here.
Sherri Jorge
Absolutely beautiful building. I would've loved to have seen it when it was operational! Stop to see if your in the area!
Maryna Su
What a surprise it was to discover this place, we enjoyed looking around and at the in small items exhibited inside of still functioning station
Doodle Girl
Very nice spot for Photography and photo shoot.. history can be seen and felt throughout the place. Working ferry ⛴ stop is still present which gives an insight how people used to come here by train and leave to different countries via ships. I like the vintage vibe this place gives. Very nice place. Rain roads and stations have ancient feel to it!
Akavar Dylutra
This is an excellent place to visit as you make your way to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Kelly Deuel
Full of interesting history, beautiful views of NYC & lady Liberty but my journey here was because I learned it was the spot where Def Leppard shot the video for their song HYSTERIA!
Edward Almazan
Very nice place to visit if you are in NJ or NY.
sandra colwell
Love that there is so much history here. Definitely a place you can stay, read and adore all the unique items.
JT
Full of history, great place. Much to observe while waiting for a boat.
Samuel Chambers
Interesting place for railfans to visit. Station is well maintained outside and inside, although the tracks are abandoned.
Niraj Chaurasia
This is non operational station housing statue cruises booking office and some of the remains of railway station open for public. They host different events on several occasions. Nicely maintained with all day paid parking ($7 per day till 10pm)
iloveitontop
Great park where you can feel and enjoy the history. Nice view of Manhattan. #iloveitontop

Great place to see some history on the way to the Statue of Liberty.
michael smith
Awesome place to visit
Silent Screams
Great place to admire the old and abandoned aspects of the alternative railfanning subculture. Beautiful engineering landmark of New Jersey.
Konamaneti Sreenivasa Reddy.
A historical and useful place. The architecture and spaciousness of the building is awesome. The grand trusses, vetilation from the ridge and rustic interiors giving pleasing look.
Ships to historic statue of The lady of Liberty can be accessed.
From this place can have a beautiful view of Manhattan skyline.
Van Tyc
Esperas el ferry a la intemperie y si llueve te dejan mojándote, urge un toldo en la zona de espera del ferry.
You wait for the ferry in the open and if it rains they leave you getting wet, an awning is urgently needed in the waiting area for the ferry.
Christopher Daniels
Lovely old railroad terminal from the golden days of steam!!!
Nicholas Downham
Beautiful piece of history right on the water. This place offers beautiful views of lower Manhattan and the harbor. Sign up for the free news letter and take advantage of the free history and nature tours and walks. It's our first stop from the airport when friends and family land in New Jersey.
Derick Le
Love, love this place! I just wish I live close by so I can do a photoshoot here. The station is not active any more but you come here for the ferry and tour to the Liberty and Elis Island. When we came it was misty and cloudy but I was in awe of the station's architecture. So beautiful and unique. You have to drive all the way in from the main road to get there. We thought we went the wrong way but we just didn't go in far enough.
Jose Azcona
A theme from the past, however it could be better maintain and preserve inside the tracks. The Central Railroad is a great place for weddings photos, birthdays or collectibles. Is a historic place and a must see when going to Liberty State Park, there is Teo hour free parking available if you are driving.
Eric Silkowski
A great place of history. Always loved coming here. It's by the park, and it has a wonderful view of New York City. There's also a area where you can learn about the history.
Sol Gomez Rodriguez
The landscape around this place is so beatiful. Inside this tell the story about the inmigrants to NY many years ago 1960 how can they did all the custom process when they arrived in the ships. Also there sell the tickets to go to Liberty Statue.
Richard Gates
The main station building is a well kept relic of the past. The train shed behind it is derelict and rather sad looking.
Davis D. Janowski
I’ve never set foot there, only passed by the terminal on my paddle board (see video of Pepper the SUP pup) or in my kayak. Was amazed to have it, as well as Ellis Island and Liberty Island all to our selves last Saturday morning. Tour boats still not running because of the pandemic.
DJ H
I wish I could have seen this station in its prime. I wish all my train stations would look like this.
andrew bowden
Beautiful architecture. A well planned public building. This museum place is worth visting. Pack a much and stop by to see the sights of Manhattan.
Leonardo Guzman
Great scenery. You can catch the ferry to Ellis Island from here. Clear view of the NYC skyline, it looks so much better from NJ. Great park for all occasions, especially kit flying or July 4th fireworks. Also helpful staff and good customer service.
Teerasith Russamevipanont
No more World Trade...
Krishna Sudarshan
Historic location and a Mecca for train buffs like me. Every time I visit this place I come back with a tinge of sadness. While everything great eventually does deteriorate and perhaps even disappear, it’s always sad to see great companies fall victim to hubris. Through self inflicted injuries and changes to the environment many of the stars of yesterday have disappeared. Will Google, Apple and Facebook face this same fate? Is this inevitable?
Chris Barfield
I love this place going back soon
Dom DAltilio
What a view of Manhattan, train station restored, 9-11Memorial, river walk all worth the visit. One word of caution. Road in is original cobblestone do the speed limit!
Wes Barnett
The railroad station (the tracks themselves) is in disrepair. There's not much to this place. The building itself is nice and you'll learn a little bit about the history of it. Wish there was more to it.
Nikhil Patil
CRRNJ is at tail of liberty state park towards harbour. There were 20 tracks previously. They have kept couple of 2 empty boggies which are kept as historic things mainly used for photography. There is empty sky monument near by as well.
Patrick PJ Cook
Historic place that is Beautiful
Ray Gasnick III
As a fan of New Jersey railroad history, this place is a great window into the past. Years ago, I received a copy of a book that was a photo history of the CNJ and the ability to walk up to the edge of the platform fence and see what became of the sprawling complex puts things into perspective.
Latasha Fortner
Very educational. With Liberty Park and ferries to take you to the statue of liberty and Ellis Island, its a great place for kids and adults of all ages.
Dr Ricardo Rodriguez
Beautiful piece of history and sightseeing!!!!
Hamada Ali
The terminal is part of Liberty State Park, and along with nearby Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty recalls the era of massive immigration through the Port of New York and New Jersey. It is estimated that around 10.5 million entered the country through the station. The area has long been known as Communipaw, which in the Lenape language means big landing place at the side of a river. The first stop west of the station was indeed called Communipaw, and was not far from the village that had been established there in 1634 as part of the New Netherland settlement of Pavonia. The land on which the extensive yards were built was reclaimed, or filled. The terminal itself is next to the Morris Canal Big Basin, which to some degree was made obsolete by the railroads which replaced it. The long cobbled road which ends at the terminal (once called Johnston Avenue for a president of CNJ) is named Audrey Zapp Drive, after the environmentalist active in the creation of the park.
The main building is designed in a Richardsonian Romanesque style. The intermodal facility contains more than a dozen platforms and several ferry slips. Arriving passengers would walk to the railhead concourse and could either pass through its main waiting room, by-pass it on either side, and take stairs to the upper level. The ferry slips have also been restored though the structure which housed them has been removed, as have the tracks. The Bush-type trainsheds, the largest ever to be constructed and designed by A. Lincoln Bush, were not part of the original construction, but were built in 1914 and have not been restored. The abandoned shed covered 12 platforms and 20 tracks.
Jan Martinec
All those tracks going to all of U.S. - seeing that is unbelievable
Greg Reese
Love this area it was great to see the history!
I have a few more images I will upload soon!
Michael Murphy
Ah, the summer of 1949! I worked at a Union News stand out on the concourse. Countless displaced persons from Europe, as well as coffins of WW II servicemen, were constant arrivals. One day, during a lull, I was playing catch with the keys to the stand. One time I threw them up and they didn't come down. They had landed way up on a girder. I bet they're still there.
Jacob Plammoottil Jacob
The faded grandeur of the building is endearing. Ferry tickets and the actual ferry to Liberty island are to be found here.
Fernando Vald
Historic place in NJ
Gerolou Mantos
Its railroad system in the past decades are well preserved and being exhibited. And the beautiful central station in the past are still being use as museum now.
John Lew (Johnjay)
Kudos to Jersey for somewhat preserving an important piece of the metro's history. Lower Manhattan's steel & glass is famous for adding bling to the evening sky esp from this vantage point. But somehow the 1913 NJ train station's ruin & decay remains dignified..despite Jersey's rusty barbed wire fences belting most of the structures. So much potential beyond photo opps for hobbyists who appreciate its value.
Katie Boudreau
Nice place to walk through and see the old tracks, but there’s not much to do or see beyond that. Take a walk along the water for a more scenic time.
Douglas Oliveira
This is a good place to start the visit to Ellis Island and then Liberty Statue, since you avoid getting in NYC and is less crowded
Dhana Corredor
The terminal is part of Liberty State Park, and along with nearby Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty recalls the era of massive immigration through the Port of New York and New Jersey. It is estimated that around 10.5 million entered the country through the station.

(Translation) Along with the Northeastern United States Railroad Company, which collapsed in 1976, it was a United States railroad that existed until it was absorbed by Conrail. The railroad route to New York has been changed and it has been abolished as a station, but it is an irresistible spot for railroad enthusiasts as it has restored the original beautiful appearance of the station building built in 1889. Now used as a ticket office for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry tours, you can also see the platform, which is not open to the public, from the railings.

Sehr schöner - wenig besuchter - Park mit schönen historischen Anlagen und einem perfekten Blick auf die Skyline von New York. (Translation) One of the historical places in New York City. Formerly the departure point for city transportation trains, it is now the departure point for the departure ferry to Ellis Island and onward to the Statue of Liberty. From there you can take the typical photo with the background of the city. If you are in cold weather, wrap up well. Here you can buy the tickets, if you did not buy them online. Enjoy

(Translation) Abandoned for 40 years, the main body has been well preserved. The waiting hall and office building are spacious, bright and empty. You can only visit it without any old things. The 40 railway tracks of the 20-row platform have been dismantled long ago, and the top of the platform has collapsed in many places over the years, and the iron fence has been enclosed and cannot be entered. It should be regarded as a museum, but there is no sign of rectification, and it is deserted. The pier built next to it is very popular, and they are all tourists who go to Liberty Island to see the goddess!
