Reviews of Whitney Museum of American Art

Friday night at the Whitney museum with family and friends was amazing! Awesome art and media exhibits. We started on the top floor and worked our way down... loved that they have both indoor and outdoor spaces with amazing views of the city. We walked along the High Line to get there. It was a great experience! Definitely buy tickets in advance.
Rachel Cipkins
Loved pay what you want Friday! It wasn’t too crowded & we had a great time. The sunset was beautiful to see from the many outdoor exhibits. The museum layout is very straightforward and easy to follow. We spent a little over an hour at the museum. Definitely buy your tickets in advance because they were sold out when we got there.

I saw the building from the Highline and wasn't impressed with the way it looked from the outside. But once inside, I experienced it quite differently. The way the building is divided is at once playful and smart. You go from small rooms to large halls, from dark and broody to bright and cheerful, from private to public exhibition spaces and those magnificent balconies with great views of the city. Your visit is yours to plan as you like. It flows naturally. You never have to look for a sign that tells you where to go next. Most people choose to start at the top and work their way down. But you don't need to. All in all, a great museum experience.

Fantastic museum exhibiting American art. Much of it is of still living artists.
The place is beautiful! The food options are excellent. There’s a bar with a great view! And the museum shop is very interesting with many beautiful unique items.

We went on Friday during “pay what you wish” and I booked tickets in advance on Tuesday. We had around 2 hours to check all the floors which we did, but some places definitely need more time to actually look at the art. But I very enjoyed the museum, it has beautiful observation decks that you can see the city skyline.

3rd time NYC and this was first time visiting Whitney and I regret that I didn't come earlier. Collection of this museum is very interesting and Edward Hooper exhibition was fantastic. I am going back on Saturday. Can't wait to spend more time here with great artworks.

Got to catch Edward Hopper's New York exhibition and absolutely loved it. Was hoping to see Nighthawks but found that it is still in Chicago. Lots of other great Hopper pieces, still. My favourite parts might have been the terraces - was lucky to have visited on a beautiful sunny day and the skyline & the hudson river view was just incredible.
Joseph Adelantar
New location but still great curated exhibits. We checked out the Hopper Exhibit which was packed. Purchase your tickets ahead of time, also it’s super warm so if you have a heavy coat, check it. Use the stairs if you can to go up the 5th floor. Also check out the outside area and beautiful city views.
Bring your headphones (which we didn’t) so you can walk through the exhibit with narration).
Elliot Gross
Came here to see the Hopper exhibit. I was impressed, but I came on a very busy day and it was unfortunately very difficult to get a good view of any of the pieces. The less-traveled other exhibits I also found very engaging. The rooftop restaurant is a must see!
Chris Ross
Once again, the Whitney is a wonderful place to experience amazing works of art. The rotating selections sure to fill your day with thought provoking commentary and you can even catch some views from the outside terrace. Definitely get your ticket online and start at the top and work your way down, you're welcome.
Joseph Althouse
The Whitney is great. I go every time I visit family in Harlem. Always something new to see. The restaurant is great. It smells wonderful as you enter. Service was excellent (Thank you Chelsea). The espresso is delicious.
Vincent Mok
Finally made it here. The building is cool and it had a few exhibits I really appreciated, including one part of the biennial that was an immersion to the blm protests which opened my eyes.
Not sure I'd rank this higher than some of the other contemporary museums in the city but still worthy of a visit
John Daryl Ocampo
Note that I did use my NYU ID and got a free ticket. I arrived around 1pm and there were not a lot of people. No lines and the museum was not crowded. I just discovered there’s a beautiful outdoor area looking out to Manhattan at different levels. The museum is kinda small but had interesting pieces, enough for an art noob like me to appreciate.
Stace Maples
So thrilled that the always amazing Whitney Biennial coincided with our outbound travel. Start at the top, and use the outdoor stairs to walk down. Some of my favorite pieces were on display, but the highlight this time was Alexander Calder's wire circus, on display with a repeating video of him performing. Love the Whitney, and kids under 18 are free. Jump on the Highline right outside the door and enjoy that urban treasure when you are done, too.
Andy Stark
Love this museum! Awesome experience!
And design works perfect with high line park.
Gorgeous sunsets over Hudson River from higher floors balconies!
HADİ Poyraz
an elite exhibition space with a separate exhibition on each floor. There is a nice cafe and terrace on the top floor. The terrace is a great place to take pictures. I recommend buying tickets online before you go.
Anastasia Lebedeva
Edward Hopper’s New York alone is worth the visit. It felt like I traveled back in time through the paintings and the stories behind them.
The whole museum is clean and well organized. A great way to spend a rainy day.
The view from the rooftop terrace is super pretty too!
Avery Anderson
Not the best museum in New York. A great collection, but SO crowded and very little art in general, and none of it that interesting. We did go during the off-season, but I still wish there had been more stuff to look at. The most interesting part was The Barbarians exhibit on the first floor, which was very avant-garde. I would like to go again when they have better exhibits.
Salvia Officinalis
Lovely coffee with latte art from La Marzocco, kind, attentive staff with lots of smiles, some sweets and desserts available on the menu, beautiful, captivating art and sturdy modern architecture, awe inspiring terrace with jaw dropping view of NYC and Hudson River/Statue of Liberty. Strongly recommend, two thumbs up! ; ) Totally not pretentious, cool place to be with a chill vibe and welcoming atmosphere!
Richard Levy
You don't want to miss the Edward Hopper Show that opened Oct. 15. I don't believe there has ever been a show with so many Hopper's in one place. I should also mention, the view from the top floor is amazing. If you are looking for a place to eat there is a Shake Shack on the corner.
Kay Pryor
The AA security guard wearing the Rolex watch was a bit arrogant, but besides that my experience was amazing. I was there to create a panel for all those lost due to AIDS/HIV. The panels will be put together to form a quilt. Everyone was super friendly and helpful.
eva gartnerova
I love this museum. It has great view to the American contemporary art, but the building itself is worth the visit. Outside terrace with sculpture, great views and great gift shop with local products and interesting items.
Quahog
Just saw the two new exhibits, Jasper Johns and the American Painters 1900-1965. Both excellent. We always enjoy our visits to the Whitney. It’s a bright, spacious, well designed venue with some great rooftops and views of the lower east side. It’s also next to the entrance to the High Line. An added bonus. We give the museum and it’s exhibits five clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating scale
Brian R
The special feature of this stunning museum is an outdoor staircase that invites you to step outside between floors, giving your mind a brief respite from the overwhelming brilliance on display in the inside.
There is a cafe in the top floor and the ground floor.
Definitely to be included in any tourists visit to NYC. New Yorkers should try to go at least once a year!
Michelle Reaves
Great collection, lots to see, a beautiful location, and a lovely rooftop deck. $25 for adults. Make sure to check which days of the week it is open before you visit and also you must buy tickets in advance to schedule a window to visit.
Carol Lee
Amazing exhibit of Jasper Johns work. Companion exhibit in Philadelphia is very different. Fun to see how each museum choose to exhibit his work. Eric, on staff here and shown in photo, was exceptionally well-versed in Johns' work and showed us hidden treats in the work. He has a be pin on his tie - when you go here you must ask him about the story behind this and Whitney Museum. Highly recommend seeing this exhibit.
Crista Popescu
Amazing permanent collection in ab iconic building. The views over the river are a stunning.
I wasn't impressed by the biennial exhibition quite as much. The gift shop is massively overpriced though so beware
Diego Godoy
Great view from the rooftop, there is a great spot to have drinks and eat.
The building is beautiful too.
Have being to a Edward Hopper exhibition of his NY portaits and it was wonderful.
Da-Wang Wu
It’s my second time visiting the Whitney Biennial, and the overall experience was still pretty good. 5th floor to 8th floor has outdoor galleries, which not only have some exhibitions but also provide very good to the Little Island and the skyline of the city. Don’t miss it next time when you visit!
Joshua Fagan
The rare museum that feels inventive and forward-thinking without being pretentious. Travel through the showcases of different, august traditions of exemplary American artists, from Georgia O'Keeffe to Edward Hopper. These artists still feel as new and vital as they did during their lifetimes. Their works capture the evanescent essence of a world that is beautiful, vibrantly so, but also dealing with chronic fragmentation, the breaking apart of meaning, and the struggle to come to terms with a world in which identity and meaning are in flux. If you're looking for newer and more cutting-edge art, check out the Biennial. Unlike an unfortunately large percentage of the modern art that's made today, the art at the Biennial feels bold, both formally and thematically, will still being grounded in real, relatable human feelings and ideas.
Grace Hu
Great experience. The Edward Hopper exhibition is awesome and I especially enjoyed the sitting space facing the floor-to-ceiling windows. A nice spot for me to rest and read through the museum catalogue.
Nick Greenquist
The Hopper gallery was great! Also enjoyed the rest of the museum.
The pieces were a welcome relief from the numerous abstract, modern, and bad contemporary art museums so common in NYC.
W Y
Great place to learn about American Artists and American Art history. Reflecting the richness of multicultural life of a great country. The biennial is politically charged and thought provoking. No waiting time to get in. There were many more staff on site than pre-pandemic.
Dan Mur
Next to MOMA, among the best modern art museums in NYC.
Very crowded though as it's very popular. Especially the featured galleries. Expect crowds
The surrounding area is also good to explore from the High Line, and Hudson Yards, to the Meatpacking District, and Chelsea.
Gregory Dvorsky
The museum featured a Jasper Johns retrospective as well as the Whitney's own collection, all of which was outstanding.
I like the museum, it's modern, comfortable and has an open air feel to it. I also had a great turkey club in the Cafe.
Robert F
The Whitney Museum currently has an exhibit of Edward Hoppers New York paintings. It's one of the best exhibits I have ever seen. It's well worth a visit.
Logan Porter
A stunning museum that will make you think. Absolutely adored this museum with brilliant art pieces, art installations, and incredible views of the city. Enjoy on a super hot day or a super rainy day in the city.
Jay
We went on Friday evening and had a wonderful time. It wasn't too crowded and the museum has an amazing view of the city. We ate at the bar on the top floor, and the average cocktail was like $15 but they're so well made that they're worth it. Lovely aesthetics throughout and an easy interesting tour. I also like that the Museum showcases art that also discusses alot of socioeconomic issues - very diverse and informative. I would definitely go back again!
Summer Walker
The Biennial took me by surprise. It’s seriously great. I think each floor has a terrace with a great view of the city. “It makes sense,” my friend said, “because the real art *is* New York. “
Mingxuan Shen
Great museum space for American art!! Their outdoor sculpture exhibition is fun and big windows offer great view for Hudson River:)) they have good student discount too!
Michael Lidell
The Whitney Museum has an excellent collection of American artwork, and the outdoor terraces provide beautiful views of the city. The Biennial Exhibition contains displays of many exciting and provocative works by new artists.
Monica Cortes
I went to see the Edward Hopper exhibit and it was a nice experience. There was enough space to walk around and enjoy the artwork without feeling crowded. The rooftop was also a great area to check out with the beautiful weather and sculptures.
Cindy Chiu
Amazing location and impressive collection. Book ahead for the free Friday night tickets...one of the best bargains in NYC and you can catch the sunset on the lovely terrace
Tina Zorzi
Craft and art exhibit was stunning. The glass bead kitchen was candy to see in-person. Great floor!
whitney sol
the whitney biennial wasn’t great, but the museum is always fun! i thought the biennial was rather strange and more video/experience heavy than what i’d prefer. the view is beautiful and the location near the high line is convenient and fun.
Yos Feit
I specifically went to see the Hopper show and I am delighted that I did. The museum has borrowed notable and important works from all over America to assemble this show ; it was fun to see the diverse origins of all the paintings. The photo was taken from the outdoor sculpture terrace with a view of Little Island to the west .
Pauline DeMairo
I finally got to the Whitney and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Currently, only the 7th and 8th floors are open because of the preparation for the Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet As It's Kept , opening April 6. It was wonderful to view the ongoing Whitney’s Collection: Selections from 1900 to 1965 exhibition. I felt I was visiting old friends. I enthusiastically recommend before it closes, the exhibit Jennifer Packer: The Eye Is Not Satisfied With Seeing Oct 30, 2021–Apr 17, 2022. The artist's use of color was exhilarating and dynamic. Her portraiture is personal and dramatic. The paintings of flowers seem to burst off the canvas.
It was an enriching and rewarding day and so I joined the Whitney to show my appreciation!
Tahnee Stockhem
As an art lover and visual artist myself.
Back after two years, the space and collection on display were well-curated!
And on top of that free entrance is included for members of one of the reciprocal museums in North America. Which is my case!
Suzanne Nelson
Don't be afraid to bring your kids. We had so much fun at the biennial. All the staff were super friendly and accommodating. Will go back again for sure!
Alejandro Aguilar
The permanent collection was my favorite.. the upper terrace has an amazing view of the city and river. Lovely to have a drink!
Kevin B
Extensive collection in a minimalist setting. Some art needs too much explanation and context to be enjoyable for my tastes, but I respect that the Whitney is indeed a grand institution, and for good reason. Plus the High Line goes all the way there, and you can combine your visit with Chelsea Market easily.
Mahitha Kotipalli
Went to see the mind/mirror - Jasper Johns exhibit. Iconic collection and for anyone new to this artist it's easy to see the transition in this style over the years. There is a parallel exhibit of mind/mirror going on in Philadelphia Museum of Art if anyone is interested!
Michelle Wang
Absolutely great place to explore American arts. Compared to European countries, American arts definitely has much shorter history but it becomes more and more of a center of modern even post modern arts. The arts will be more post 1900‘s. Also it is a very nice neighborhood with Chelsea market, lots of cafe, restaurants and boutique shops for a nice weekend day plan. I don’t want to include so many pictures to spill all the excitement. Welcomed to come and check it out!!
Alexis Wang
Definitely an underrated art museum, but absolutely loved it! Their exhibitions are very unique and full of interesting art. They also have an outdoor gallery upstairs complete with a view of the Hudson River - a pleasant surprise! Would go again. Also, be sure to check for when their free hours are and go then!
Karla B M
Great collection of contemporary art. They have a cafe in the top floor. You can see beautify sunsets too
R. Jeter
Incredible contemporary art. They have a respectable cache of Georgia 0'Keefe pieces.
The bar plays great music. And make sure to watch the Lizards film.
Carsten Lohmann
Interesting visit of the Whitney Museum which gives Europeans a good impresion of American Arts. A valuable visit at NYC!
Mari Dekle
The Whitney was relatively crowded and only the top two floors were open. Overall, I felt that it was overpriced for the experience when compared to museums such as The Met or MoMa (both of which have far more impressive collections and pieces on display). The coffee was surprisingly good and the museum cafe was nice and airy. Additionally, the gift shop was excellent and had a variety of high quality, interesting books and items! The building itself had a lot of natural light and the interior was well designed. While I am glad that I had the experience, I was slightly disappointed given that I had heard great reviews and I hope that I can come again when there are more exhibits. I think that the Whitney is a worthwhile experience but I would definitely recommend prioritizing viewing other museums first. You can definitely view a much wider array of artwork at the MoMa or The Met and there are smaller museums that I feel are more worthwhile in terms of value.
Yvette Chisholm
Love the Whitney museum!! Always great and well organized exhibitions. Also nice views from the exterior spaces/exhibitions. Right next to the high line and great restaurants.
Elaine Lee
Got tickets online only a few days beforehand. Definitely enough to see for more than 2 hours. Great views on the top floors
Morgan Girard
Friday night at the Whitney museum with family and friends was amazing! Awesome art and media exhibits. We started on the top floor and worked our way down... loved that they have both indoor and outdoor spaces with amazing views of the city. We walked along the High Line to get there. It was a great experience! Definitely buy tickets in advance.
Elizabeth
Beautiful thought-provoking exhibits! Loved my visit here. Went on a Friday and it was Very busy, full of people everywhere. I'd recommend a Mon or Tues.
Pic is a view from the upstairs cafe.
Daniel Morris
Very friendly. Great customer service. Everyone helpful. Clean. I would give 5 stars but I am not really into Art. So a little boring
Delphine Ettinger (Ashes57)
We just renewed our subscription to see Edward Hopper’s exhibition. Love the show. We love the views too.
Darley Macangus
Nice selection of exhibitions and not too busy - staff very helpful & informative - the outside area would be nice on a dry day
Thomas Smyth
In a great neighborhood- so it is worth it as a destination even if you are not nearby. Not overwhelming like bigger museums. Hopper is worth the price of admission.
R C
I think I always prefer the space of the museum rather than what’s exhibited there.
The Hopper exhibition atm (Oct 22) is fine, but there was something lacking.
Ina
Nice architecture, less packed than MoMA and MET. Also a great selection. The experience gets even better with audio guides.
Jordan Noël Hawkes
I go every couple months and am so grateful for my membership. One of my favorite places in the city. The Vida Americana exhibit in 2020 was so well done- I bought the book! And, Dawoud Bey in 2021… wow. Go see that. Their gift shop has great postcards too.
Karina Kisselite
Beautiful views from the terrace of this art museum. There was a good tour guide.
Tyler Blaz
Lovely museum with several floors of interesting exhibits! We were only here for about 1.5 hours, but we enjoyed walking through the floors and spending time out on the terrace. The Hopper exhibit is definitely worth seeing, as I've never seen such a large collection of his works before.
Jill Jones
The Edward Hopper exhibit at the Whitney Museum of Art, "New York," is a stunning and thought-provoking exploration of the artist's work and its relationship to the city he called home. As I walked through the gallery, I was struck by the way Hopper captured the energy and vibrancy of New York, as well as its moments of solitude and isolation.
One particularly poignant aspect of the exhibit was the focus on Hopper's studio in Greenwich Village, which was threatened by gentrification in the area. This added a layer of depth and relevance to the artwork, reminding us of the ways in which the city is constantly changing and evolving.
The Whitney's gallery space, with its expansive windows looking out onto the city, was the perfect setting to appreciate Hopper's iconic paintings of New York life. The exhibit expertly curated, with a range of works that spanned Hopper's career and offered a rich and nuanced view of his artistic vision.
Justin Hayworth
The best art museum in New York!
Thought provoking modern / contemporary art. Sometimes exhibits are overtly political, but they always evoke powerful emotions.
The talent and techniques of the artists are sublime. Rotating galleries and exhibits ensure that visiting a few times a year will bring a fresh experience on every trip!
Art here is reminiscent of work at festivals like Coachella or what you might find at Art Basel.
And the city views from the outside staircases are magnificent, especially at night.
Can’t wait to go back again!

One of my favorite museums, beautiful exhibits nice Cafe
Paul Lorenz
My first visit to the new Whitney. The Edward Hopper exhibition was great to see. I plan on visiting more often.
Duke de PallMall
The Whitney is a wonderful museum with a highly relevant permanent exhibit, a great location with wonderful views and just the right size to explore on a long morning or afternoon. The 2022 Biennial was fantastic, despite considerable criticism in a number of press reviews. I enjoyed it immensely and encountered many new artists working in various media. A must when visiting New York.
James B.
Great Museum! They've really done a fabulous job of designing a space that's optimum for viewing art. It's also nice the way it interacts with the city. For example, I was at the hopper exhibition recently and it was wonderful the way there was just sitting area where you could contemplate the rooftops and water tanks of lower Manhattan in a way that was evocative of Hopper's paintings.
Mark Trean
It’s juvenile activist bent stares glaringly in your face, but knowing how to navigate this offense of our present time, it doesn’t distract from noting it’s quite possibly one of the best designed museums anywhere. Manageably sized, mixed media exhibits that work together harmoniously in an enjoyed space for all people. Simply fabulous, ingenious presentation all around by the artists, employees and architect who designed this building. LOVED IT!!!
s b
I don’t know anything about arts. I did not study it in college. But I like to go to museums because I feel peaceful there. It’s like meditation in public. This museum did the same for me.
The inside/outside exhibits remind me of MoMA. Listening to the info on each art piece through your phone was awesome. There was a wine/beer bar too. The staff was helpful. The gift shop had cool stuff and books about the artists. It was a well spent rainy day.
Tom Imperati
Went for the Edward Hopper display. An amazing representation of New York City life. It almost felt like the paintings were speaking to you.
KEN MCKINLAY
The biennial exhibition is vast, over 3 floors. By its nature, you're not going to like all of it, but it is so worth seeing. Personal favourite was the photography. Tempted to take off one star for the food prices but it is such a great space I decided not too
L
Incredible museum - great variety and excellently curated. The Whitney always have great rotating exhibits which is nice because there is always something new to see. Favorite museum in the City, as it’s great for frequent visitors from the local NY area who like to see something new each time they visit the museum.
Arnaud D.
Bigger museum than it seems. Went to Whitney in order to see the Edward Hopper exhibition, it was great. A lot of pieces were nicely displayed. Could also see the permanent exhibition.
We had booked tickets on the internet and we were able to come in instantly, no line. Appreciated.
A Z
The exhibits aren’t that interesting and they don’t change frequently.
Photos are views from the Whitney. Sad but the views are better than the art. It has three outdoor decks you can wander on with artwork outside too. You’ll get decent views of Midtown and the Hudson but it’s hard to take unobstructed photos.
Kyle McCarthy
Love the venue and its outdoor decks, although rooftop cafe was closed at our visit. I think the traveling shows are better than the permanent collection. Meatpacking is such a buzzy neighborhood that it's fun to be there anyway. And the people watching is great. The current "Edward Hopper in New York" show is worth seeing.
Benjamin Holiber
Absolutely love this museum, always combine it with a walk on the highline. Taking the free tours is extremely helpful in learning more and appreciating the art. Will be going back since exhibits rotate, even the permanent shows have changing pieces. So my second visit was different from my first, the two visits were years apart. So in a couple of years when I visit New York again, this will be a stop!
Shaopeng Yuan
One of the best modern art museum in NYC, especially the outdoor areas are best photo stops.
Denise Miller
Great views, great art. Check out the hopper collection right now.

When I was a student at sva, this was one of my spots to view nyc's skyline for free.
Antonina Yekimova
Beautiful building. Love the views, like architecture, enjoyed Edward Hooper collection
Maegan Douglas
Probably my favorite museum in Manhattan. It's 8 floors of incredible art, some rotates, some is permanent. I typically take the main elevator all the way up to 8 and work my way down. The gift shop is a must see. And the rooftop views are so good.
dean collins
Great room size/volume and collection.
Timed enterance means doesn't get too jammed.
Francis Schneider
A top museum of American art with changing exhibits of its collections as well as loaned objects. This year is one of the special biannual exhibitions in addition to the normal display of owned works from early 20th century artists. Should not be missed by anyone interested in modern art.
Maria Demesticha
Great museum as always! Friendly staff, great exhibitions, nice city views
Jonathan Nightfire
I went to the Whitney Museum with the group for the 1st time and it was excellent. The view on the 8th floor was spectacular on the balcony. They got really good modern art just like the MOMA have. Those elevators is very big for the large crowd. Also on the view it had city skyline everywhere and Jersey City on the Hudson River. I will comeback again in the future.
Kristen (Gypsy Monkey)
Love love love the Whitney ! It’s a great size that can be completed in around 2.5 hours -in my humble opinion . Be sure to scan the bar code on the map/guide flyers you see around because then you can use the audio guide . I personally love the audio guide because it brings the paintings to life and you learn the background . They even have a kids audio guide for the 7th floor (their permanent collection ) . Bathrooms are on several of the floors and the museum is very accessible to those who use a wheelchair . They even have self guided verbal description tours for those who have low vision or are blind . Additionally the Whitney has descriptions next to the painting in Spanish . Very impressive establishment if you ask me -which you didn’t but I’m telling u anyway . Go here . It’s great and the staff is very friendly helpful even though they deal with the public all day long . Love ya Whitney . I won’t stay gone so long . I promise ;)
Jeslin Varghese
Always enjoy visiting the Whitney. "At the Dawn of a New Age" that showcased early twentieth-century American Modernism is something I enjoyed and would re-visit to complete it. Thursdays are a good day to visit the Whitney as they have extended hours. Friendly staff and like the coat check in the basement. The cocktail bar on the 8th floor was a delight as it offers some light fare and spectacular views of the city.
Helen Zhao
Beautiful museum with a nice rooftop, $25 adult tickets
Nouvelle Chicane
Always enjoy the Whitney. I got my membership this year. No regrets. I will renew!!
Ian C
The art is stunning the building is stunning. But most importantly, IT’S SIGNIFICANTLY LESS CROWDED than The Met, MoMa, Natural History Museum, and the Brooklyn museum. I’m here Christmas week and oh god the other museums were nightmares. Hordes of people (we contributed to it) just made all the visits absolutely exhausting. Whitney has small crowds and lots of staff to shuttle people around. The galleries are approachable to people who aren’t super art inclined, yet provocative and inspiring.
Esseland T
A good space featuring some very impressive art works from some American greats. Unfortunately we weren't able to view all the floors as there was an event which was only open to members. But still managed to spend nearly 3 hours over 2 floors.
Lori R
Saw the Edward Hopper exhibit, it was truly amazing.
Okan A. Altug
You will most likely never have a chance to have such a comprehensive and well curated Edward Hooper exhibition. It was excellent. They should have crowded their amazing show by bringing Nighthawks to the exhibition. Congrats to Whitney Museum of Art
cinthia m
The Edward Hooper retrospective is filled with early works.
Highlight: a 1964 TV interview that you can listen, while sitting on a sofa.
Mr. Hopper talks about his work, what moved him and his influences.
That is extremely rare. Most artists are very mysterious...
He was getting interviewed with his wife.
She made remarks about their marriage and men in general.
We tend to to romanticize the past, and this interview is no different. The journalist is an expert: he made Mr. Hooper confortable.
And he tells us a lot of details, after being back from Paris.
The picture above is a self portrait, an oil, painted between 1903 - 1906.
Go see it. It is fabulous!
Annette Gendler
Edward Hopper's work will never disappoint but the exhibition experience does make a difference. We had timed tickets on a Friday at 10:30 (opening time) and the exhibition was already crowded. Furthermore, there's no organized flow or order indicated anywhere. You don't know where to start (It's not that hard to set up a few arrows, is it?), which way to turn next, and people are constantly moving ever which way. So, even though I love Hopper, and they had some famous paintings like Automat, I couldn't really get into it.
Zac
This museum is incredible! I was staying down the street and figured I might as well roll by.
I had scheduled to have 2 hours but it wasn’t enough! There is just so much to see here!
Must visit if you are in the area!
Oat
I've lived in NYC my whole life and have never this museum until today! I went to the Edward Hopper exhibit and it was excellent. All of the other exhibits were great too. Perfect place to go hang out with friends or to take a date.
ANGRYPUPPET! !
Loved it. Great museum, excrllent show. Neighborhood is either super fun or super annoying, depending on your opinion. Great gift shop and cafe, clean bathrooms, friendly staff. .

I went yesterday with friends and we had a good time. The art was fire and the museum layout is fun to walk around in. They have rooftop balconies so you can take in the views of the city
Glenn Polin
The Whitney is focused on American art primarily of the last hundred years. There is a permanent collection on one floor and special exhibits are on the other floors.
This is the first museum I visited in New York City since the beginning of the pandemic in March. They were very well organized with tickets to enter at certain times. The bathrooms were really spotless and didn't seem like much of a risk to use. The elevators were marked with places where people should stand. Rather than having people pushing buttons for the elevators one of the museum guards would call for the elevator to come to a certain floor thereby avoiding everyone pushing the elevator button over and over again and giving each other their germs.
There were many beautiful pieces of art of course. I skipped the Lichtenstein geometry pieces. My wife greatly enjoyed the colors and varieties in the exhibit on crafts. The exhibit of Mexican muralists and their contemporaries was excellent and they have a number of murals by Thomas Hart Benton who is one of my favorites. Patrons were all in masks and keeping appropriate distance
BARBARA TABER
Wonderful museum experience. From the Alexander Calder Mobile to paintings by Georgia O'Keefe, it is a dreamland for lovers of fine arts. Walking from the subway was tricky because streets were not well marked. However, once there it was a wonderland.
Marion NYC
Not the most kid friendly museum in NYC. If you have kids younger than 10 years old I definitely would not go here yet. The staff do not appreciate kids! As a long time member and now with kids, it’s a little annoying. The art is good. They do a good job ensuring COVID-19 safety protocols. The highlights are the outdoor spaces. Great views! This has become a NYC icon. The area has really gotten affected by COVID. I would have given a 5 star but the workers are a bit intense and uptight and the lack of family friendly space. Click the thumbs up if you agree this is not a family friendly location.
Burton Strauss
Nice space. Elevators are slow and confusing (only two run to the basement coat check, which you can't obviously select from the upper floors).
I'm not a fan of the "choose your own adventure style of show layout (too easy to miss things) but that seems more to be the new normal...
Gareth Davies
A bright and clean space to see art works. The resident collection is worth seeing with many notable works. The temporary exhibitions are also not to be missed. Recommended.
Lisabeth Cullum
The Edward Hopper exhibit is wonderful. If you can take a tour with a docent all the better. Did not know he and his wife lived in a little apartment in Greenwich Village their whole lives.
Crazy Apple
I really did enjoyed my time looking at art with my aunt and my cousin. The only problem was in some occasions I had a very rude person shoved me but I pulled my aunt and cousin away so it doesn't escalate. Clearly security is supposed to make sure things like that doesn't happen. What security kept worrying about the most was keeping your bag infront of you. I get it so you don't knock over any art pieces but please make sure you control the crowd as well. That person wasn't the only one is why I'm making sure security keep an eye out, people really can be rude. I also seen some people touching the paintings too. If you must put something around it more to remind people don't get too close.
Bill Prindle
Went to see the Hopper exhibit. Good exhibit. Crowded but the spaces accommodated us well. Got fed up with people bring in strollers and parents with kids under 12 who were running around squawking. It’s not a day care center, folks.
Eva W
Beautiful views from the rooftop. The current Edward Hopper exhibition is a must see
Michael
Amazing views on the 5th floor west side and balcony where these photos were taken
David Epstein
very nicely organized. docents we're very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
Viewed and greatly enjoyed the Edward Hopper exhibit. We will visit this museum again.
Peter Koloff
Amazing Hopper show.
It’s beautiful the way he captured NY.
A must see.
Vicky Gonzales
The museum was really great. They worked so well to have minimal contact for covid-19 reasons. The Vida Americans exhibit was very cool and the different art displays were so beautiful.
Casey Lunkley
Pretty good museum, although I'd say if you're choosing between the Whitney and MOMA, I'd choose MOMA. Hopper exhibition was very interesting. Crowds were insane, but I did go the week after Christmas. Who knew?
Cindy W.
Beautiful exterior design, with many different exhibits to be seen. Honestly, I would visit Whitney again just to enjoy the rooftop view, bc it was simply breathtaking during sunset (and it was free). The exhibits were interesting since it revolves mostly around American arts (Native American art, pop art, etc). The 8th floor is reserved for special exhibit, so I imagine it changes time to time.
Neil
Great museum. Six floors of exhibits, different genres, and insightful art. Great place to spend a few hours on a cold winter day or hot summer day or just a regular temperature day.
Here are some pictures of art given this is an art museum.
Paul Burns
The hopper show was amazing definitely worth seeing
Shaima Alharbi
We had a great time with my friends. It was so smoothly and safely! they pay attention for social distant and Covid stuff very well!! Besides that I'm glad to see Frida Kahlo paintings closer!!
Angel Velez
Well kept museum with special events exhibit area . Quick entry if you have your ticket ready and barely ever lines and if there are lines they move at a decent pace. Friday is donation entry , pay what you want for a ticket .
Rico Vitale
Went for the Edward Hopper (Nighthawk) exhibit. Very nice collection. Make sure to bring headphones if you want to use the online audio guide.
Mónica Rodríguez
I loved the neon signs at the entrance, but they don't represent the experience inside the museum. It lacks diversity. I thought I was going to an American art museum, but it was more of a white American experience.

The Whitney focuses on 20th- and 21st-century American art. Its permanent collection, spanning the late-19th century to the present, comprises more than 25,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos, and artifacts of new media by more than 3,500 artists. It places particular emphasis on exhibiting the work of living artists as well as maintaining an extensive permanent collection of important pieces from the first half of the last century. The museum's Annual and Biennial exhibitions have long been a venue for younger and lesser-known artists whose work is showcased there.
From 1966 to 2014, the Whitney was at 945 Madison Avenue on Manhattan's Upper East Side in a building designed by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton P. Smith. The museum closed in October 2014 to relocate to its current building, which was designed by Renzo Piano at 99 Gansevoort Street and opened on May 1, 2015.
Lauren Olivia Kim
Absolutely loved this museum! Great artwork and the view of NYC cityscape is beautiful from the top floor. It is definitely worth a visit or two. Spent about an hour or two viewing all the available exhibits and there weren't very many people, unlike the bigger ones (i.e. MOMA). If you're looking for a more low-key, less crowded place, but still want to indulge in that New York City art life, check out the Whitney!
Yen-Chiao Huang
One of the better museums in New York.
Lillian Rothschild
American art in a beautiful space
Full of light and high ceilings,
Unlike the old place
With its dark airless feeling.
The neighborhood's vibrant,
In a hip, low rise way.
Nothing like the East Side.
Walk the Highline? You decide.
Or the pier; less congested, most days.
I'd just bike it, a Citibike dock's right nearby;
We go often, that way, my partner and I…
We're members; it's worth it supporting museums.
Preview invites are cool, when we have time to see them.
Flash your card: VIP in the tiniest way.
The Whitney's a great place to spend half a day.
Jeon
Consistently great works at one of New York’s best museums. Also try not to go at the last possible weekend for an exhibition, otherwise you’ll be rubbing arms with selfie-taking tourists (after waiting an hour to get in).
Lola Colette
A rainy Saturday and Edward Hopper’s New York exhibit at The Whitney = perfection. From his luminous art to commercial works, correspondence with his mother, and even theater ticket stubs - it was a feast for a fan.
Greg Rosenberg
The Whitney Museum of American Art is a multi-floor museum filled with sculptures, paintings and video installations. Every staff member I interacted with was friendly and professional.
I took my time and spent about three hours at the museum (one floor was closed as they were changing out the art).
Definitely check out the art on the balconies and enjoy the views of New York City.
Joe Archie
We love it. On the lower floor there is a wardrobe facilities where you can leave in custody your coat/jackets and bags too. This service is offered free of charge. On ground level there a bar cafe where to you could have a decent meal. Good compromise costs/quality. On the same floor there is also a shop which offers a good selections of books, pictures and gadget. On top floors there are the exhibitions
I would suggest to check the museum website for dates and name of the artist. I would definitely make a membership if I will have a chance to visit more often
Lenny M
The Edward Hopper exhibit was very well done. The museum guide that you load on your smart phone from QR code enhanced the experience. I recommend it to art lovers and NYC-philes.
Esther
This is a beautiful space and a must visit for anyone who likes contemporary art. It’s pretty close to the Highline and lots of great restaurants. It also is near a lot of shopping. I went to the Warhol exhibit and found it to be really interesting. The space itself is beautiful. For those visiting in the winter months, there is a coat check on the lower level. There also is a pretty great bookstore.
Doug Elfman
We began at the top floor of the Whitney and worked our way down, slowly studying every brush stroke and sculpture and video art. The Whitney went quicker than the Met and MOMA, because it's smaller, but it was still more than worth the trip here, because the curation of fine art is top notch.
Chiemi ChiAmy206
Very nice museum! Great modern art collections with interesting exhibitions.
Multi- levels, beautiful and clean. They have a monthly pay-what you can night. Get there early because it will be a long line. It is worth it for sure. They have outdoor patio and the view is gorgeous.
Frank Morgano
A wonderful museum, outdoor areas and decks to enjoy looking over Manhattan, plus good wifi and a cafe on 8. Very large elevators although when it's busy you will wait or use the stairs.
damon peters
Love the Whitney, became members, skip the pay-what-you-want nights. :). Staff is great, size of museum is just right. Views are beautiful and highline access is so fun. Spend half a day or more here a couple times per year. Love ❤️. I absolutely recommend the membership, as we found payback almost immediately as we started bringing friends to the museum and receiving discounts. It’s a good thing to do for the arts, but is also economically a great value for something we enjoy doing anyway. We no longer have to wait for pay-as-you-like Fridays. :)
Kenny T
Great experience and lovely gift shop.
Maximo Cardoze
This buiding facade came into view during a bike ride on the Hudson River Greenway. Beautiful building
Alex George Bejan
We visit at least 2-3 times every year. The exhibits are always outstanding and the overall feeling of the place is very good.
Marc Hill
My favourite view of meat packing district, the west village and the Hudson River. The building is beautifully constructed to feel like an artist loft studio echoing the glory days of NYC creative arts and painting.
The building is also an engineering marvel with its unique flood walls that can be activated if a surge or tsunami hits New York.
The permanent collection is varied and interesting. Def worth a visit, especially on free Friday nights.
Sylvia Del Valle Jorlett
It was well-organized, the staff is friendly, and the exhibits were wonderful. The cafe was also a pleasant experience, with no wait to enter and friendly and efficient staff.
Robb Gill
The Whitney Museum is a beautiful new building aesthetically pleasing peaceful Museum. I really do like the location of it at the end of The High Line and about 2 blocks to Chelsea Market. This downtown Museum has great outside Terraces overlooking lower Manhattan.
I really do like the changing exhibits inspirational!
wenya luo
I like this museum too much. I will be able to read this museum in an hour before I come to the Raiders. The actual one hour could not be finished. The museum has eight floors. I came here a little bit, I came out at four o'clock, I didn't want to come out in the museum. The museum's work is too surprising!
Raymond Ellis
I really enjoyed the museum. The Vida Americana exhibit concerning the Mexican artists was great. I also enjoyed the exhibit on the Permanent collection.
Lauren Ames
One of the best museums in the US. It has breathing space, exhibits on a human scale, gorgeous views, even outdoor spaces.
Valerie Wong
Would definitely come to visit again. Although it may not look like much when you enter, the public entrance space is super spacious with seating area and a cafe to the right of the entrance, it is mainly just the reception area and the elevators. But once you visit the individual floors, there is a lot of art to look around and get lost with in the building. It is also very scenic with lots of window light to be emitted in.
Valeria Lombo
So glad that the Whitney museum has reopened! Highly recommend the Salman Toor show, very refreshing. Cauleen Smith film is also wonderful
Nawar
Superb collection of American art. This museum, designed by Renzo Piano, is just a stone's throw away from the High Line and Chelsea market. You could spend a whole day exploring all the artwork in the museum, but at least set aside 2-3 hours to walk around the galleries and take in the amazing view of the city from the terrace. Love all the educational activities/guided tours they have at the museum.
池端大輔
This museum features contemporary art, modern art.
When I visited there, the museum held a special exhibition features Andy Warhol.
The exhibition was great, but the other exhibit was interesting and worth watching, hearing, feeling.
You have to take much time to enjoy all exhibits.
There is open-air terrace at the floor located restaurant, you can see around the museum, of course the "high line".
This museum is very crowded, so it takes time to use elevator.
Ainekari C
Delightful experience, contemporary images that depict the timeline of our societies present issues. Very powerful and overall enjoyed every single floor’s unique exhibition. The museum has a coat check room on the basement floor, so you can walk around without personal bags to enjoy your visit. The rooftop is always a great place to go to as you can observe the high line from outside. I visited during the winter so they closed it for that reason but I’ve also visited during the summer and it is a wonderful view!
Y C
Interesting places, there is another world that cannot be imagined. Every artist has devoted his life to art and integrated his life into his own works. Some pictures seem too tragic and sinful, and now I can’t forget, I am just A bystander has never known these artists.but can spend an hour or two on them. Very good time
Jonathan Heawood
One of the greatest art museums in the US. Beautiful spaces. Intelligently curated. Easily navigated. Exciting movement through the space, using the industrial lift. Doors open to reveal each floor - straight into the action. Rooftop cafe caps the experience with views across Downtown.
Eva Schicker
Immediately upon arrival, the Whitney delights with its location right by the Hudson River. The building is a striking sculptural masterpiece in itself. The lobby is airy and gives a taste of the architectural and artistic tour ahead. Do take the elevator up to the 6th floor, and start your visit with experiencing the almost 360 views from the terrace off the café. On a clear day, one can see a swath of New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the far distance. The views over the High Line are breathtaking, too. The exhibitions are changing throughout the year, and are usually focused on modern-day American artists and art movements. Also, the Youth Programs are excellent. Do visit.
Olga Ria
Interesting museum, u need full day to see all the floors. If you are hungry it’s good place where u can have great coffee and snacks without leaving the building. Also can get a good ticket price if you are a student with ID.
Eden N
Gorgeous new building with revolving exhibits. We went during the controversial Whitney Biennial in 2019 (more than 8 artists withdrew in protest of VC Kanders); there are quite a few things to explore over the different levels.
Facilities are clean and air-conditioner works well. A lot of other museums blast their air conditioner to the point that you need a jacket ;-)
There is an outdoor space and several indoor areas to explore - and great views of the city!
Alan C
Pretty awesome looking museum. The outdoor spaces are highly recommended for beautiful views of the city.
Jean Mumper
Thanks to Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, this huge collection of art is available to us in NYC. The Whitney Museum is an incredible structure -- lots of open space, a mix of small and large rooms, indoor and outdoor areas. One can get a meal in the restaurant on the ground floor, or a snack on the 6th floor. Gifts are also available on the museum store
David V.
Great exhibits and very interesting. The top floor has this famous "white" paintings but there is more to it. Depending on where you stand and how distant, you sew different shapes and color. I think it's worth the visit but many of the people there did not like "white" canvas. If you spend the time and enjoy modern art this place is for you
Tregg Frank
Great mix of contemporary art spanning from ultra recent to slightly historical. You may stumble into things that challenge you, that you don’t immediately click with, or that push the boundaries of what you expect from a museum. That’s a good thing.
Mixed in with pieces posing questions and exploring tough subjects are more comfortable and traditional paintings across several different genres and mediums.
The coffee was good too.
Alan
Beautiful building and gallery spaces
Susan Peterson
Loved the Durham Exhibition, delightful. It's a gorgeous building and setting. I thought overall it was an engaging experience, but it fell a little bit short for me. Maybe I hyped it up too much in my mind before I went. And again, I had a great time because of the Durham exhibit. But I'll definitely want to explore other Art Murders first before returning to the Whitney. Like even making a return visit to the Met would be high on my list.
Corey Martin
I’ve been pretty excited to go to the Whitney for awhile now. The building is beautiful from the outside, so I wanted to see what it was like. I wasn’t disappointed. The building is very dynamic, with each level being slightly different, so it was fun to explore it, especially the upper levels.
The exhibits were good. The tech exhibit was occasionally interesting and sometimes meh. But that’s tech art for ya. The Warhol exhibit was only open to members, so we weren’t able to see it. The permanent collection was good, and cool to see. I appreciate the focus on American art only. With a limited amount of space to view their permanent collection, it helps give a viewer a good trip through modernism without too many stops.
The place was packed, and the elevators are very slow. Also I wish they had a late afternoon discount. We paid full price even through we only had 2 hours to see everything.
Justin Young
An amazing museum of Modern American art. One of my favorite museums in the whole world that always has interesting exhibitions. Worth every penny for admission. A great way to spend a cold winter's or hot summer's day.
Debora Steele
Very enjoyable and accessible art museum that everyone will enjoy, even those who aren’t art-appreciative. We visited for two hours, but 3-4 hours might be more appropriate to survey all floors.
peter haggerty
Lovely place! Architecture, levels, collections, paintings, stairways, outdoor views of NYC, the magnificent Hudson, the location, and NJ's thrilling skyline. We did just one floor, took our time, and reveled in the art on display -- learning, talking, wondering, and imagining. (P.S. we slowly walked the Hi-Line from the mid-30s to Gansvoort where lives the Whitney. A day of rare beauty and some part of our 15,578 steps. Love NYC!)
Michael Palan
One of the best museums for modern art in Manhattan, and thus the world. Be sure to bask in their amazing collection of Edward Hopper paintings!!
Stephanie Carvajal
Love this museum! They have a good collection of different artists and usually have very cool exhibits. I’ve seen Pollock and Diego Rivera as special exhibits and they’ve been great. Even if you’re not into modern art, it is very welcoming for anyone who wants to see some art and have a good, relaxing time. They have a cafe and some outdoor balconies. Very spacious so you have a very comfortable experience even when there are a lot of people, they keep a control of how many people are let in at a time.
Omar Arias
Wonderful visit! I got an annual membership and will plan to visit again. I couldn't cover everything in one visit. I love Edward Hopper paintings
Tomas Lempera
Great space and a nice mix of art to see. Pay as you wish options on Fridays in the evening, however it gets busy so I’d say worth visiting during regular hours if you prefer to take your time seeing everything
Jen B
Stunning exhibits and amazing views from the room top bar. A must visit when in NY!
Essay Car
At arrival, staff at the entry lack interpersonal skills by greeting and smiling. It’s very important to have great communication and greeting skills especially if you’re going to be the first staff member that guests will encounter. She was dismissive & rude. She seemed miserable as if she was forced to be there.
Once inside, it was a nice museum full of beautiful art work and great layout.
Ivy Xiong
Great modern art museum, the whole setting is thoughtful; comforting place for me, will visit the place on a monthly basis;
James Philip Coombe
It's always entertaining at the whitney. Been a member for a little over a year now. Enjoying the benefits and perks. Lovely exhibits always popping up. Beautiful view at the top. Definitely a must go.
Rebecca Brindza
Quite possibly one of the best contemporary art collections (and structures) in Manhattan as well as the East Coast. The visiting exhibitions are always fantastically curated. We never miss a visit when in town. Plus, the cafe on the roof has the best gluten free chocolate chip cookies in the city.
eunhyun kim
Amazing! The collection of art they had was very high standard and satisfied my artsy needs very much. Not to mention their beautiful view of the city especially during the golden hour the light through the big window is so beautiful. Worth a visit if you are into art
Garrett N.
Impressive collection of modern art in a classy setting. Don’t miss out on the many outdoor spaces to enjoy additional exhibits and views of the city and the Hudson.
Alex Atkinson
I thought I would hate it because it times of modern Art can make you go mad. This was not the case! Some of the art was undoubtedly silly. But visiting the museum was an enjoyable experience especially for the great views that it has to offer. And a fun interactive exhibit where are you could walk through Sand
Dan Chiu
The new Whitney museum building houses some of the most impressive American art. Recommended stop if you are an art enthusiast. Although 7 stories high and with out door area, there are some middle floors that are not accessible. They do not accept donations. You can see if you company or school is a corporate sponsor.
Beate Reifenscheid
Visit the Museum each time when I am in town. It has been inspiring to see the Jasper Johns Show with its Ränge of works through all periods. Nice staff there, too.
Emily Lu
A beautiful, well organized and brilliantly curated museum! Went there to see the David Wojnarowicz exhibition and was blown away by it. The museum was easy to walk around and the audio guide had tons of information on it. The gift shop was worth a look too. Most of all it’s not too tourists-y so it was very enjoyable! Will always look forward to what they have on for shows!
Maddy Land
Beautiful museum. Great outdoor patio areas. Amazing sculptures, paintings, etc. super clean, nice staff. One of my favorite museums in New York!
Tiffany Lew
Travelling to NY for work, I had a day off so I decided to check out the Whitney Museum. Started on the 8th floor and worked my way down. The rooftop was very nice and I loved seeing some pieces by Edward hopper, Lichtenstein, jasper johns, and Warhol! Definitely worth a visit!
Letty McGrath
I recently visited the Whitney Museum to see the "Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria" exhibit. As a New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent, I was looking forward to a beautiful and moving exhibition, and the Whitney did not disappoint. The exhibit was amazing and shed light on the tragic events during and after the hurricane. However, while attending the tour, I was angered and disappointed to hear the tour guide tell the group several times that Puerto Ricans are not US citizens! How is it possible that in an exhibit designed to inform and enlighten get this critical piece of information wrong? I realize that Whitney docents volunteer their time to provide museum tours, but considering the sensitive nature of this exhibit and the negative experiences of Puerto Ricans in the wake of Hurricane Maria fueled by this misperception, it is important to provide correct information. Puerto Ricans ARE US citizens!
Scott Lloyd
Free on Friday nights and a great way to get amazing views of the city lights. The collection is small but well curated. Check the schedule so you plan your visit for a fun show.
Randy Baker
Very cool museum near the high line and Hudson River
Michael O'Connor
Great permanent collection --especially the Hoppers. Interesting current exhibit
Leslie Heberlein
Go! The Jasper Johns and Hopper exhibits were really amazing. Beautiful building not too crowded. Pay what you want on Friday evenings.
Kristina Hathaway
The museum was preparing for a biannual event when we visited, and initially I wondered if there would be enough to engage us for an afternoon. There most definitely was!
We saw an amazing exhibition from Jennifer Packer, an artist I wasn't familiar with, and her work was simply breathtaking.
The building itself has amazing aesthetics. The views from the terrace have gorgeous views in all 4 directions. I will definitely visit again the next time I am in NYC. I want to see what's on the other floors!
I feel I should mention the cafe as well. The menu is small, but everything was had was fresh, high quality, and prepared excellently. The cookie tasted like it was made minutes before we arrived. Delicious!
Lucy Mannall
Great exhibition space, lots to see and think about. Would highly recommend
Carla Romero
Came for a Dawoud Bey exhibit was not disappointed. Also very cool building and terraces. They have a great selection of permanent works as well.
Luke Forsyth
Whitney is a fab building w an amazing collection in a fab part of town - ran into a friend from LA
Paul Branchaud
I'd heard of the Whitney museum before but never visited. So glad I finally went. Beautiful building with lots to explore and discover. The surrounding area is beautiful and the views from the elevated terraces were spectacular. Spent close to 2 hours and still didn't get to see everything. Will definitely return in the future.
Dennis Grishin
Amazing museum. We came specifically for the Warhol exhibit, but I was here two years ago and also loved it. Probably one of my favorite art museums in NYC or anywhere. Much more contemporary art, so not everyone’s tastes, though.
Lu Zeng
The exhibits are world class, thought-provoking, instagrammable, etc. etc., but the outdoor space is amazing! You can get incredible sunsets and cityscapes even with a crappy cell phone, and had I arrived earlier than 1 hour before closing, i would have certainly enjoyed the sunset over a glass of wine at their outdoor cafe.
I wish they had a more extensive gift shop. Or maybe I missed it?
Warren Dantzler
The 7th floor collection is unbelievably rich and vast, including numerous works of both Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keefe. I could have spent hours on that floor alone! Some parts (especially the exhibit on the 3rd floor) were questionable and elusive but their other collections, like the three dimensional sequin items on the 4th floor, more than compensated and made this a remarkable experience for me. Absolutely recommend visiting.
Sebastian Rousseau
Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again at the Whitney Museum of American Art is the artist’s first full American retrospective in 31 years and a fabulous exhibition to see. A sublime experience that reflects the genius and talent of Warhol in an amazing place. Highly recommended!
G Aquino
Excellent museum of modern art with lots of inspiring, provocative, and aesthetically beautiful pieces, including still art, videos, and animations.
Their 'Human Interest' exhibits, occupying two floors, use portraits of people to tackle varying themes of the human condition.
The building itself is modern, bright, and spacious, with balconies offering spectacular views of the city. Admission is quite steep but those on a budget can go every Friday evening, when it's pay-as-you-wish.
S. B.
Nice art museum in NYC!
Diane Albanese
A collection of mostly white items, a black box room with light bulbs hanging in rows and several other pieces to ponder. This museum offers some favorites O’Keefe and Hopper and then some perplexing pieces of art that left me wondering, why is that here? How is it relevant? Still, a deep dive into contemporary art.
Julie Mallory
Always a great selection of changing art displays. The various quilts & textiles, and the views from the rooftop caught my attention this time.
Eve
A definitely recommend visiting the Whitney! 7-8 floors of awesome art pieces with each floor being a different theme. They have a cafe inside if you show up early and have to wait. Gift shop is cool as well. I would start at the top (make sure to go outside, on the floors that allow you to!), and work your way down.
Nikitriy
It's ok. You can barely find art there, but the city view from the last floor is amazing
Allanah
Andy Warhol exhibit is worth the visit. Plan at least two hours to truly enjoy it. Tours are great to embark on a detailed experience of Warhol's art movement. Expect lines to enter.
There's a restaurant on ground floor with table service and a café on the upper floor.
Entrance fees are $25 except Pay-what-you-want Friday nights.
Jared Kane
Pretty good Musuem but the pr exhibit was open to members only. So will have to come back. I would like to say I'm Puerto Rican so should've been allowed in for free
M V
Beautiful building and views of city. Art was very eclectic and interesting but a little too techno for my taste. Always good for me to see what's happening and edgy. Enjoyed my visit there very much.
Benoît ROUSSEAU
One of my favorite museum and cultural place in NY. Amazing collection and always great temporary exhibitions
Sabrina C
Very underwhelming. Expensive for not much. The outdoor area for the cafe on the 8th floor is cute. Would only come back for pay-what-you-wish
Priya Narla
was there from 7:45PM-10PM. Really neat exhibit, beautiful city views, the building itself was really cool. I’m usually a buy merch from a museum kinda gal but the stuff was a little too out there for my taste lmao, still fun to look at. Short walk from Little Island.
Dan Leonhardt
This Museum looks a lot larger from the outside than it actually has space for exhibits on the inside. This isn't like going to the Met where you could spend several days. You can go through the whole museum at a moderate pace in just a couple of hours, maybe three or a bit more if you're really into the exhibits. Personally, I'm not that into Andy Warhol and when I went it was a significant part of the museum so that made it go faster.
However, there are multiple balconies that have great views of the skyline so if the weather is great, budget some extra time for that.
KEVIN ROMAN
Smart and beautiful Hopper show. NYC as people boxed in. Theater provides a wide, expansive space and respite from the buzz and isolation of life.
Samantha Sile
Quality permanent exhibition and beautiful building. I enjoyed the biennale - quite dazzling WiFi for tourists. So much nearby also. Walk along the water. Take the highline walk everyone bangs on about. Eat and shop locally in the fab Chelsea / meatpacking district.
Frank Chan
Very popular museum near the southern end of the High Line. There is an Andy Warhol exhibit going on currently from December 2018 thru early 2019. The large extensive balconies on floors 6, 7, and 8 offer great views and photo opportunities of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson River. Creative way to learn about Warhol and engaging in a deeper understanding of his life. There is also a permanent collection of Americana, folk, and modern art.
Bri E.
There’s always new artwork at the Whitney which is fun to see. They offer student discount for $18, general admission is usually $22 and military tickets are free! They have multiple elevators but it still takes time to go up and down so if you can i suggest taking the stairs. They have outdoor artwork and a nice place to take pictures on the 8th floor.
Alan Turnage
Nice and cool museum that we visited on vacation. The balconies on each floor also offered pretty good views of the city.
Gabi Lopez
One of my favorite museums it's the first time I have been here since the new location. I went to see the new Warhol exhibition, it was a lot of fun I suggest going during the week since it tends to be less crowded. I love that this museum is open later I find going in the evening to be more enjoyable. The collection has something for everyone to enjoy I highly recommend it. Staff was friendly great with giving direction signs were easy to follow and the flow of traffic throughout the museum was seemless. My only complaint is coat check is very claustrophobic so pack light if you don't want to deal with it.

Interesting collection of art and nice to have an indoor/outdoor cafe to enjoy the skyline and Hudson River. I liked best that The Whitney is at the start of The High Line, making it a connected experience to reminisce about the gallery as you walk through the park and compare the street vendors work to what you just saw. * See if you can find my photo locations and send me the match! *
Rory Hertzfeld-Hearse
It's always been a great museum! It's new location just catapulted it into a must see destination in Manhattan. Sure, it's expensive, but make a day of the outdoor decks with breezy views of lower Manhattan. The staff actually have a refreshing sense of humor and aren't stuffy like in other international museums.
Yanyu Tang
I went there because of the free School trip of my daughter on Jan 9. It is not far from my daughter's school. The presenter is nice and there's some interesting activities. Also they give us a free families ticket .
Heila Myara
A brilliant museum. The exhibitions and artists are moving and bring such unique perspectives. I really enjoyed how you could even find the connection between the different floors and exhibits.
Thank you Whitney museum for enabling us to experience such futuristic , unique, brilliant and inspiring artists.
Juhyun Park
The Whitney is really awesome art place in New York City. When I was go there in Summer, there were many exhibits I could see. Especially, they exhibited the Alexander Calder’s work. So, that exhibits gave me great inspirations and made me huge thinking. It’s an unforgettable place for me.!!;)
Syed Mahi
It’s breath taking place. There is some much to learn. I recommend everyone should go. Quick tip, for NYC,CT and NJ people you guys can pay a cent if you want. It’s a donation for us people.

Amazing art but huge crowds, takes away from the vibe I recommend bringing noise cancelling headphones
Angela Maaya
Well structured and feels sophisticated. Very unlike anything I've seen, the museum can be great inspirations for those who are into art fields.
Carol Ann Dixon
An interesting space to visit, especially as the conclusion to a walk along New York's High Line. At the time of my visit, Pope.L's thought-provoking, water-based commissioned installation 'Choir' was on view, as well as the Vida Americana exhibition on Mexican and Mexican-American diasporic art histories - featuring iconic figurative paintings by the modernists Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Alfredo Martinez and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Fang H
A great place to unleash your artsy self. Wonderful curation. Great view of the skyline.
Major complaints though are the following:
1. Some staff/volunteers are rude;
2. Elevators are ridiculously inefficient, especially when you want to go down from the top floor;
3. As huge as the building is, one could feel very contained inside. There’s gotta be a better way to diverge crowds of people.

Hyper-modern! Whitney is a beautiful place to experience notable works of art. One of the museums utilizes its outdoor space to position some exciting sculptures that fit NY's urban personality! We visited during the Whitney Biennial, so we were lucky to see many works of 20th-century American modernism, David Hammond's day's end, Alexander Calder's wire circus, Cassandra Press' pieces of literature, Carles Ray's sculptures, etc. The museum is next to the Hudson river, so you get to see some great views of the location! In addition, the outdoor staircase invites you to navigate between floors and helps you get a brief mind pause from the creative and clever collection on display inside. Definitely recommended!
Marc “Tempesto” Palumbo
Great visit with Vincent Clark Fox who's work is in their permanent collection. Some of my favorite pieces are on display. Saw my first Ruth Asawa. We ended the day on the roof with espresso, talking about art, and enjoying the Manhattan skyline. I just wish the Cafe was more affordable.
Ruben Cruz
Wonderful exhibit and located in a unique neighbourhood, Your surrounded by great art.
Cristian Gautier
The Biennal collection is not very impressive, if you are visiting the city and don’t have much time I wouldn’t go. For 25$ I’d rather go to the Met, Met Breuer and Cloisters with the same ticket valid for three consecutive days. This museum Is dedicated to American contemporary art and the building itself is more interesting that the collection. The café is on top is excellent, reasonable prices for the quality of food and the view is amazing.
Andrew Eliquen
Not a lot of art pieces to view right now as it's under renovation. They should have reduced the price but instead, they kept it at $25. A lot of overrated artists are featured. I recommend skipping this while they're under renovation.
Rachel Salcedo
What an incredible museum! I can't believe I've been in New York for 5 years and never been here. The Jimmy Durham exhibit was surprisingly great, and the incomplete history of protest somehow exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend.
Daniel Custer
Great museum to visit in Chelsea. Good for fans of modern art. Bring cash for the street vendors outside selling local art!

Worth to visit. Nice museum
Natalia Bogomazova
It's a good art museum with reach collection of contemporary art. Decent make a interesting and good tour for us for free. I absolutely love it and recomend for any age of people.

We went to the Whitney to view the Andy Warhol exhibit. Massive and inclusive. Loved it. I will try to return. My wife has been 3 times and plans to return.
Xiaoqing Ye
The architecture of this building is already amazing to photograph, besides the exhibitions they have put together were excellent in showing the audience about the history and culture around art.

If you are into Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art is a must visit. All the galleries are different from each other and the experience is spectacular. Must visit.

Wholitney museum is legendary Treasures box of American modern art. May see famous collections woth the additional gift - wonderful scenery of Ny + Hudson river.
AlanaSophia
Amazing art, nice space, interesting exhibitions. Great views of NYC from the stairs outside. Would recommend!! Can get in for free with AGO membership.
Der müde Joe
The new museum building is worth a visit. From the roof terrace you also have a very nice view of some parts of Manhattan, especially the meat packing district. The exhibition is specifically tailored to American art and certainly holds some surprises in store for European visitors. Not everything that glitters is gold, but there are many beautiful things to discover.
John Cawthorne
Modern art marvel..:don’t miss the Whitney
Salina Chowdhury
It’s okay,I love the rooftop restaurant
Sahil Balani
I went there to see Julie Mehretu’s work and they dedicated the entire fifth floor to her work. On the same floor they also have a really good deck that looks over the Hudson River. Also in the cafe I tried their chocolate chip cookie which was very good!
Mikel OBrien
A wonderful museum with an impressive American Art collection, which is my personal favorite. The Edward Hopper exhibit is fantastic and educational.

"Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again" is a very detailed and comprehensive retrospective. The exhibition is located on 3 levels/floors, 5th, 3rd, and 1st, but its main part is concentrated on the 5th floor, where approximately 90% of all showcased works are displayed.
Andy Warhol couldn't and still can't complain of the lack of his 15 minutes of fame. Most of his Monroes, Elvises, Coca-Cola bottles, Campbell soups, Brillo boxes, etc. are well-known, reproduced in hundreds of thousands of prints and posters, and very well represented in all major US museums of contemporary art, so the exhibition doesn't surprise with anything new or unseen. The early and less-known, Warhol-before-Warhol, works are shown too, but these are not the material that made the man and his art so famous. A little bit more interesting are his drawings and prints pivoting around the USA-USSR arm race in the 1980s.
The overall impression and experience greatly depend on your predilection to Warhol's art, but then, again, if you are not a big fan - you probably won't be going to see this retrospective in the first place.
We can't stress enough the importance of buying your tickets online (specific time-slot is required but slight variations in your arrival time are not enforced), for otherwise you will be stuck in line, especially on weekends.
Marcus
A fantastic museum with great exhibitions and a relaxed atmosphere. Definitely a must see. Enjoy!
Noah Langford
The new location for the Whitney Museum is an incredible space next to the High Line Park in the Meatpacking District and incredible views of the Hudson River and the city skyline on their outdoor terrace
Zoe Kennedy
My favorite museum for many reasons- thoughtful collection of modern art, the layout, the beautiful views of the city on the upper levels, and the location. It's nice not to have to trek to upper Manhattan for a good museum day. I will say this museum is probably a little confusing for tourists though- navigating around is kind of confusing and there is not a lot of helpful signage. But the museum employees seem super helpful.

Whitney Museum of American Art is located at the Meatpacking district on the southern most part of the High Line. This museum focuses on 20th- and 21st-century American art. Its permanent collection comprises more than 23,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos, and artifacts of new media by more than 3,400 artists. It places particular emphasis on exhibiting the work of living artists as well as maintaining an extensive permanent collection of important pieces from the first half of the last century. The museum's Annual and Biennial exhibitions have long been a venue for younger and lesser-known artists whose work is showcased there.
The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. Staff were professional and friendly. Ticket prices were fair and competitive. If you're a student its much cheaper and/or free. Street parking available only. They have a cafeteria on the upper level with a great view of downtown. You can easily spend half a day on this museum. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and enjoyed the exhibits. I highly recommend this museum.
Amalia Eliakim
Beautiful building and location. The exhibitions were also great, but this place is a must in sunny day! There is a lot of natural light and the structure itself is unique. Perfect to combine with a nice walk on the high line and Chelsea neighborhood
Alexandra “Ale” Paredes
Beautiful museum at a great spot. I loved that they’re always rotating exhibitions. Also the outdoors areas of the museum have great views of NYC.
Roger Haak
Loved this museum. Their layout is perfect - doesn't feel disjointed despite being on multiple floors. The folks who worked there were great and helpful.
Arthur Glauberman
When the Whitney Museum of American Art moved from Madison Avenue on the Upper Eastside to its new building near the Hudson River in what was once known as the Meat Packing District, at 99 Gansevoort Street, many people were skeptical that this was a wise move. It turned out to be a brilliant one! The museum vastly increased its exhibition space and is now located at the beginning ( or end) of The High Line, New York’s elevated park. The Whitney’s building is considered by many to be a work of Art! They have a wonderful restaurant on their top floor that overlooks the skyline and whether you are going to enjoy the paintings and exhibits or just looking for a great place to spend time in a beautiful space, it will be well worth it.
Denby Liu
The museum's move from the east side to this purpose built building on the west side has massively improved the amount of space available to showcase it's collection of American art.
One of the great things they did was to have external areas that you have access to, you can walk down/up the outside floors and admire the city views at the same time.
One of the recent things they also did was to empty an entire floor. It was funny just to watch people's expressions as they entered the floor and looked from one end to the other end. If it was a Manhattan apartment it would have been one of the largest floor spaces ever with killer views to the west and east!
The museum is located right at the bottom of the high line so makes a good start or stopping point for that attraction.
Alice Campos Magalhaes
Lovely experience. The space is great and the collection reveals great surprises.
Richard Brett Kelly
This one is hard to review bc it depends on your level of interest in modern art that is challenging at best and garbage (literally) at worst. Seems to me that just about everything showing in the Biennial needs a 5 minute explanation of why it is art. Is that a good thing? I feel like I always find it difficult to find anything here that I could live with in my home—not that that is necessary.
I highly recommend starting on the 8th floor and working your way down to the special exhibits. When it gets too bizarre, bolt!
Kristina Sinclair
Excellent gallery. Well curated and interesting shows. Always worth the visit. The balcony views are also worth the entrance fee. As a Brit I found it slightly difficult to find the building when not walking from the High Line due to loads of roads works. Also the subway is near but not very close. Very much do the high line to get to the gallery. Such a fantastic walk!

If you are a fan of modern art, go for it
Foad Torshizi
Underwhelming. As always. Shows and the biennial. Just had a press preview of the 2019 Biennial and I founs it utterly underwhelming and deeply mired in identity polititcs. What a disappointment.
To be fair, I've also seen Laura Poitras's show at the Whitney and it was phenomenal. But, generally speaking, I'm most of the time underwhelmed at this museum.
Nice views of Hudson though.
Andreea Iftinca
The Edward Hopper’s New York exhibition was very impressive.
Highly recommended!
Patti Miller
The Warhol exhibit takes you through his life and artistic progression with various media. The permanent collection on the upper floors has many crucial pieces of American history.
Emily N
Great modern art venue! There’s a couple floors open and a couple outdoor patios too! And pay what you want on Friday nights
Tim Butz
I went to see the Edward Hopper exhibit. It was WONDERFUL!
Paul Casey
The exhibits were fairly sparce; however, it was still worth it. I really enjoyed seeing all the Georgia O'Keeffe works.
Lynn S
Well-curated exhibitions and stunning views. There are additional pieces located outdoor so be sure not to miss them. Open late Fridays and Saturdays. Buying tickets in advance online saves you a few dollars. Free tours are available and are very informative.
Margo Desantis
Edward Hopper exhibit was excellent
DrKim
Modern art and excellent view of Hudson river.
Yangyang Fang
Gorgeous rooftop cafe with view, and beautiful space in general. Really liked the American gothic exhibit but was less impressed with some of the permanent exhibits. Can get crowded and it's possible you have to wait in a long line for tickets (and bathrooms!) on weekends. Very friendly staff on site and worth the visit!
Gael Lapasset
Very good museum with tons of things to see. I do appreciate the building, the exhibitions, and also the shop, with various things to get as souvenirs. It’s a very interesting place for art lovers and people not very fond of arts, because it’s very popular in the good way. And plan to stay for a long time, they are many things to see!
Cecilia Oliva
Love coming to the Whitney, not just for their amazingly curated exhibitions, but also for their architecture, their cafe on the top floor a an outside patio with a view of the Highline.
Karya Karina
Modern museum with modern art. Need be a realy deep in subject to understand all arts there but some explanations on sights can help. All summer in friday night 7pm-10pm entry tikets "pay as much as you with"
Jerry Laster
Definitely not a cabaret, as the NYC permit proves. Instead you will find art, mostly modern (depending on how you define modern, and art) but I overheard someone mentioning they liked the vintage art, so there is that too.
Every two years they organize a very large exhibition that they pointedly call the biennial.
Mark Kennedy
Beautiful modern architecture building with large span of American art culture within the museum. Expensive considering the size of the museum - specially compared to The Met or any other larger museum that offers more affordable entry rates. Store is also insanely expensive. Offers great views of lower Manhattan from the outdoor top floor, including the Statue of Liberty.
Kristin Mikie Sword
Huge fan of the Whitney. The new location is much larger than its previous spot and they have been working to create some beautiful exhibits. Recently, I’ve been particular fond on the artists they have brought through. They also hold pretty decent events for members.
Prem Prem ahir
The museum layout is very straightforward and easy to follow. We spent a little over an hour at the museum.
Nicole Jesson
Entry was quick and easy, and tickets available on your phone outside. Whether you like the art is up to you!
Peggy S
Loved the Hopper exhibit. Crowded, but everyone was super respectful and polite. Beautiful museum.
Barbara Cote
Spectacular exhibit space with thoughtful and generous consideration to the roof top views afforded by the 8 floor structure.
Michael Sobsey
Warhol show was fabulous. Saw it almost a week ago and I am still thinking about it. The portraits are a tour de force, and the Death and Disaster gallery upstairs resonates with the sanctity of human existence to a degree approximating a spiritual experience. I was deeply moved. Great gallery and an eclectic international crowd. Get there early or book tickets online the night before. Show is mobbed; that is because it is great.
Katie Lee
All that time, I went there, I could see beautiful view at the out side balconies...There are also exhibitions. Looks awesome!!. And the huge colorful staind glass was so beautiful!!! I sit in front of that glass and apriciated that glass for a while. Love, Love, this New building of Whitney Museum!!! I thought a lot better than previous place.
Kelly Donlin
Having been to the old Whitney it took me a few years to get around to going to the new one and while I would rate the building and architecture a 6/5 if I could, I was a bit surprised that most of the famous contemporary art pieces were not on display and two of the floors were closed. That said, from time to time there are great special exhibits like the 2017 Calder: Hypermobility Motion and Sound exhibit one.
Oh, and the rooftop drinks in Summer are not to be missed.
Grace R-L
Always a fan of the Whitney. Amazing art. There is something for everyone here. Beautiful exhibits and very well laid out.
Jeffrey Rozman
The Whitney is the most underrated, dark horse, art museum in the city. MoMA and The Met may get the most street cred and kitschy tourist attention. Don't do yourself a disservice, go to the Whitney. If you want to be a horrible person, go there on a friday and pay what you want. But the whitney is a city treasure and should be treated as such. Always great art you won't understand, in a building that is more beautiful than your date or spouse. 5/5. Solid place.
Jason Jimenez
Excellent American art collection in a stimulating array of spaces. Stunning views of meatpacking district and NYC from terraces and balconies.
Elizabeth Fraser
Loved the space, the views and the artwork! Take a leisurely walk down the highline and then enjoy the museum!
Vicky Terry-Rijo
Museum is awesome and the staff super friendly but unfortunately the line to go inside its ridiculous, they try to forsee you together a membership so you don't have to wait to get the tickets, but having a membership makes you wait anyways. Insane. But again museum its amazing great art display comfortable to walk inside. Its beautiful
Adi Kai
Very great museum right on the starting spot of high line. You make sure to check out the cafe on the 5-6th floors and the view from terrace.
Catherine Warren
The building is magnificent, and the location is perfect for attracting very young, stylish, modern art appreciators. The gift shop and cafes are conveniently appointed and located at the main entrance in the lobby. After snaking through a centralized line, you enter an elevator that takes you to each floor. It is quite simple to navigate. The flaw is that while everything looks compelling at first glance, there is nothing you will really want to buy in the gift shop, the menu in the cafe is bland, and the exhibits are more preachy than interesting. The Whitney is the excitement of meeting a gorgeous, chic celebrity, and the disappointment of quickly realizing they are dull, insecure, and desperate to be relevant. While most of the exhibits and collections are the equivalent of an average MFA showcase, there are a handful of great paintings. If you go, do not miss the Hartley collection and the stunning sculpture by Rebecca Belmore,
ishkode (fire). Otherwise, there are so many other museums in the area to visit that aren’t quite as surface and immature as this one.
Louis Boo
The Edward Hopper paintings exhibit is extensive and very satisfying to observe. Recommended!
Claudio Lozano
I went to the Whitney Museum shop to take photos of my sister Luanda Lozano's small prints that were for sale at the museum.
They have the same Covid Protocol of all places.
D D
I enjoyed the exhibits & it’s not expensive. Please visit this museum as soon as possible you won’t regret it
Monica Rivera
Awesome museum with spectacular views. They have terraces and the landscape is breathtaking. I do not consider myself a contemporary art fan but their Hoopers selection is gorgeous. I was lucky to visit during Andy Warhol’s exhibit and it was awesome too. Entrance is 25 USD which totally worths it. Staff is friendly. Access is through elevators. The little shop is cute and they offer nice souvenirs. Wifi works great. They have two cafeterias. Even if you do not love art, this museum is great for the panorama and a must when visiting New York City.
Mauricio Vera
I have one of the Most wonderful experience working for the 2019 Biannual Whitney museum, the staff, production and curators are hight level professional.

My opinion is a place to watch in Manhattan, Recommend to visit o the 245 day of the year.
EJ Lee
Andy Warhol exhibition was good. 👌 Every Friday 7-10PM is pay what you wish hours, walk in only. (General admission fee is $25) …
SooYoung Kim
Ambience is great. Gluten free friendly. They have the best gluten free chocolate chip cookie with a milk chaser!
Evan Scaria
Great collection of work! You can move through the galleries rather quickly - I would plan additional activities in the area.
Rafael Marin NYC
This time I was for the last day of the exhibition Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop. This was at 8th floor. I made beautiful pictures inside and outside, beautiful views of NYC at the bird’s eye. Then O was by the Fifth Floor to see the Public Art Project by David Jammons: Days End. I recommend to go this Museum. Especial mention for Salman Toor: How Will I Know.
Jackie Dutkanych
Interesting museum. Loved the artwork done by Jennifer Packer; intriguing and the more you look at it the more detail you find. The color palette is one that I haven’t seen in a lot of modern artwork recently
Leonardo De'Ureña
While I liked the old Whitney location, this new one isn’t bad. I went to see the Warhol exhibit. A must see if you’re in town. They have to do something about the temperature. Check out the rooftop for dope views of the Hudson.
Charles I
Much to see, enjoy and fascinate. Get a membership if you can afford it.
Abhishek Bhattacherjee
I would spend at most a couple of hours here. Relatively a small collection of art work. But the rooftop on the 8th floor at dusk is spectacular and I would recommend this place just for the views of One WTC and Empire State Building.
Toni Mun
Loved Jennifer Packer's exhibition! Amazing!
August Zeidman
One of the best art museums in NYC, and one of the best modern art museums I've ever been to. With a beautiful space and well displayed exhibitions, the Whitney truly brings some beautiful works of the past century to life, with informative descriptions and context provided for nearly every piece. I always enjoy coming here and looking forward to the next special exhibition. Whether you live here or are just visiting, make sure you make the Whitney a part of your agenda! (Plus its in a super cool neighborhood with a ton to do, great coffee, great food, great shopping, and close to whole lot else)
G “Jersey” A
Jasper Johns Show is amazing! We came 2,000 miles to see it. Worth every penny to get here!
Froggy “Froggy” Jen
What a great museum! Wonderfully manageable and easy to navigate. I was really impressed my the friendliness of the museum staff. Truly a pleasant afternoon in the city!
Aisling Siobhan
Nick Mauss: Transmissions. 5 stars.
The current exhibition (Transmissions) was interesting. Live ballet performance was en pointe (geddit?) The gothic section could have been bigger but alas; the war/peace pieces made up for it.
Justin Burt
Beautiful museum with roasting exhibits. The Whitney collection has some cool surrealism pieces!
Daisy Fahie
Beautiful museum helpful staff
Althea
Great cafe view! Coffee is decent but the pastries and hot cocoa are a bit too sweet for me.
I really like contemporary art. But I know not a lot gravitate towards it. If you appreciate it, then there's always an exhibit that's either interesting or gravitating.
Ana G
The exhibitions were ok... I found the museum very beautiful but their recent exhibitions not as entertaining.
The cafe "Untitled" is a bit overpriced but I recommend the "toast" items.
Crystal Zhang
Amazing! Highly recommended ! I am a big Andy Warhol fan! Being there is like my personal heaven. The museum is very chill yet regular museum restriction applies( food and drinks etc ...). First floor has gift shop where you can get souvenirs. However, from my opinion was not quiet relatable to Warhol’s work rather just a gift shop.
Andy Hasselwander
The Whitney is well worth the $25 price of admission. For those seeking a survey of modern art, you can’t do much better than starting at the top floor and heading down the elevator. This will give you (as of August 2019) a chronological tour of modern art.
The Hopper collection is fantastic, as are all of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s pieces. The contemporary stuff is more hit or miss, as expected. They do a good job highlighting the most interesting artists working today, and some will be a bit... challenging for some observers.
In sum, you can’t visit Chelsea without a trip to the Whitney. You’ll be delighted, or, at worst, it will challenge your perceptions.
Adam M
Can never go wrong at Hudson yards or Whitney Museum of American Art. Always something to find ad TVs museum. To see whether it be new exhibits or going to restaurants clothing stores or even bumble and bumble Fara haircut around the block definitely a go to place can always find a desk.
Manuel Ojeda
Visited much more for the building, rather than the museum itself. Is located in a really nice area, great for walking
SGMP
Not a big museum. But the collections are really good. Some nice exhibitions of art and sculptures. Staffs are helpful very much. After visit the museum one can relax at the adjacent restaurant and bar.
Laura de Miguel
Great exhibitions. The rooftop has a really nice view of NYC. Fridays from 7 pm pay as you wish
Sam Goldmsmith
Great artwork here. Love the eight-story layout. Start at the top and work your way down.
Irma Zandl
Fabulous museum designed by Renzo Piano. Currently showing David Wojnarowicz and a great installation of indigenous spaces and modern architecture with seven emerging Latinx artists
Stacey Linnartz
What can I say? The Biennial is always exciting and the museum is so beautiful - it’s an event in and of itself. The curators here always give great description and context to each work with plates on the walls. Get a drink in the cafe upstairs or on street level. Take a walk on the Highline after. A great Saturday afternoon.
Ethan Zhu
Liked it but there were not many famous paintings that really intereged me much.
Stefano Azario
Hopper was a very good show in a particularly apt location with windows on today’s NY landscape.
Fungai Tichawangana
What a beautiful space for art and quiet. That 5th floor is the best space for art I have ever seen. Love the views from the upper floors. Do try The Studio Cafe on 8th floor. Great sandwiches and amazing views of Manhattan, Hudson River and the New Jersey skyline.
Cliff Weng
Amazing exhibition space with a cafe with great view. Very relaxing if you go in the morning. Online audio guide is informative and doesn't need installation.
Lane Carrandi
Spectacular exhibits and really reasonable price. We spent nearly 3 hours winding through the various levels. It had everything from the early 1900’s to recent acquisitions. The staff were helpful. Would definitely recommend!
Ellen Sheppard
Excellent collection of modern American art thoughtfully curated and beautifully displayed/installed. On my visit I joined three docent led tours and all were excellent... The docents' insights and information added immeasurably to my appreciation of the exhibits. Same for the audioguide - and it's free! Lots of volunteers and staff and all were friendly and helpful. The museum is unusual in that it's 100% curated, no works are permanently displayed.
Steve Weiner
Spacious galleries , wonderful show of Hopper, and so importantly, the staff is unionized!
Anronymoust T
Possibly the best art museum in NYC. Although not as big as MoMa or MET, I find it to be the perfect size for a ~1.5 hour visit without feeling drained. Superb collection of contemporary art on each level. DO check out their top floor bar / cafe for a drink, visited here on a Friday evening and it was very lively with a great view of the city. Definitely a great visit and cannot wait to come back
Lethicia Matos
Bienal is really amazing. I
Creative, reflexive and inspiring
Byron Ramirez
An amazing museum filled with contemporary, modern, and post modern art. The exhibits change throughout the year, making every visit to the museum unique and fun. The museum also includes outdoor art exhibits, a restaurant on the top floor, and a great view of the city from their outdoor rooftop.
Shoshi B
I thought this was a nice museum. We, the group and I, visited the 7th Floor permanent collection, which has since been rotated, with art from 1900 to 1960. There were paintings from the Industrial Age, George O'keefe, a Lichtenstein, a Warhol, some Hoppers and, of course, many more. We had a wonderful guide who was very knowledgeable and informative about each painting and the artist. I had a lovely time and will go back to visit other floors.
Emanuele Pagani
Whitney is one the best museum in New York City. I am in love with it’s branding and design. Highly recommended.
Susan Budris
Great exhibits. Easy check-in system. Helpful staff.
Mac Adelman
I hate to say it, but this is by far my least favorite museum/art collection that I have been to in the city so far. Granted, I’m no art expert or connoisseur, but the art that was featured simply wasn’t my style. With that being said, the Whitney gives out free tickets to NYU students so I was lucky enough to go for free. Therefore, if I’m going for free then I see no reason to complain excessively about the place. With that being said, I also really enjoyed the various balconies that they established. They provided some really great views and pictures. All in all, I personally wouldn’t go back to the Whitney, but I definitely think it’s worth checking it out at least once - especially the balconies.
C.W.K BERLIN
Great!
Astonishing view from 8 floor Taras.
luenfire not art
most cutting edge american modern art museum. moma feels old compared to the whitney biennial. if you want to stay in touch but don't have the time and energy to go to small gallery openings of indie artists, go to the whitney
Corey C
The location is in one of the so called trendiest locations in NYC. My company is a donator to this museum so we do get comp tickets. The down side is that you still have to wait on the general admission line. To me it doesn't make too much sense. I hope they change that policy.
Eduardo Diaz
Always a good museum to visit. Need to get tickets before hand. Use your phone for that.
Panda
Great exhibits, love that they've added a public one that they periodically change. The gift shop currently has cockroach pins, they are adorable. (Be sure to check out the high line park, and tiny island park they are right next door!)
Eunjin Min
make sure to reserve your timed tickets before your visit. one of the most beautiful roof top in NYC and unfortunately cafe is closed 😢 …
Luane Haggerty Haggerty
Incredibly helpful staff (love the "here to help" shirts) incredible collection, great neighborhood and so close to the NYC Highline, great restaurants and the art of the city.
Ana De la Cruz
There is so much to say about this place. Great exhibitions, it takes you on a journey through American contemporary art. It also has magnificent balcony views where you can take great pictures. You get your money's worth.
Christie Ray Harrison
A bit overpriced in admission for the amount of art you get to see, but the terrace views from the top floors are worth it! Amazing number of restrooms on most floors too, and good cafe on the top floor and restaurant on the bottom floor. Usually pretty crowded on summer or holiday weekends with a line outside, but once you get inside you can spread out a bit.
Carlos Mora (ritocs)
This is one of the most beautiful galleries I've ever been it. Art inside was also great. I went on a Saturday an it wasn't as crowded as any other galleries/museums I visited during my stay at NY. From there you can walk through the High Line, or just walk around Chelsea for more art insights.
Tal Goring
Great view from the top floors
Also a very wide art selection of American art

The Whitney is an excellent choice for modern art in NYC. With an extensive permanent collection and some of the best exhibitions (Warhol just ended) you can easy spend a day exploring the 6 floors of art and installations.
Cafe on site and just below the southern entrance to the High Line.

Amazing! Such diverse art. There is definitely art there for everyone and all ages! Go early to avoid lots of people. 👍 …

We enjoyed our visit to the gallery but for one thing. On two levels there were large tour groups being addressed by extremely loud guides. We found the level of noise offensive so that we were unable to enjoy the artwork. At one point a guide walked up and stood between me and the painting i was examining. Simply rude. In the last month we have visited the Louvre, the Prado, Alhambra, the Cordoba mosque and lots of other places involving tour guides. These civilised places use headphones and or hand held devices enabling visitors to hear guides without disturbing others.
On the way out we encountered an extremely rude young woman in the shop and dreadful service in the cafe. Overall not the best afternoon. Wonderful building and a treat to walk along the High Line to get there.

Great gallery spaces and only a short walk from the subway. Views from the upper outdoor galleries are interesting. I particularly enjoy their special exhibits.

The Whitney Museum is great, but the large Andy Warhol exhibit (including the famous Campbell's Soup Cans) is awesome! It's a must see at this museum (Warhol exhibit ends Mar. 31, 2019)!
Pros: The Museum, with its view of the Hudson River, is literally next to the New York City Highline. Walking distances from Subway lines A,C,E and number 1 and bus lines(see online "MTA Trip Planner" for more info). Museum has a free check coat section downstairs, two small restaurants, but plenty of restaurants in the area. NOTE, there are two lines - one for ticket holders and one for non-ticket holders.
Small Secret: There is also a small gallery to the right of elevators that is free to enter. No need to pay for a ticket to the museum to enter this gallery, but, you MUST wait in line with the non-ticket holders. Once inside, get out of line and find the gallery (note re-entering the line to get a ticket could be an issue. See security for guidance).
Con: The entry line is long (out the door long) during special events/popular exhibits for non ticket holders. Street parking and traffic are huge challenges and frustrating in that area (it's NYC). If you must drive, there are parking garages/lots in the area, but can be expensive (approx $20+ an hour).

This is absolutely one of my favorite museums in America. The artworks and exhibition programming are thoughtful, well curated and inclusive. Renzo Piano’s museum design takes advantage of its site by utilizing exterior terraces for the display of sculpture. These terraces also provide a fantastic backdrop for photos of Manhattan’s breathtaking skyline and views of the HiLine and Hudson River. The verticality of the museum allows for multiple exhibitions within its 8 stories of space. The Whitney Biennial alone is worth making a trip to NYC to see! Located in the heart of the Meatpacking District, this beloved museum is a short walk to some of the city’s best restaurants and shopping too!

Whitney Biennial going on now. The museum is free on Friday after 7. There are long line but they move fast. Good Friday night activity.

Very big museum, walking up stairs only leads to floor five while there are a few more levels in the building. Taking the elevators was a hassle. Lots of waiting to get on and see which elevator was going up or down, you might as well learn how to fly at this point. Art is great, a couple of interactive pieces you can touch and so on.

Great location, amazing views especially from the upper floors and a nice selection of American art! I think that summarizes it pretty weell! Even my 14 yrs old, who normally isn't the most enthusiastic museum visitor liked it a lot. The museum is also too big like other museums in NY (Met, MoMa etc). A must see when you're in NY!

Always a wonderful experience visiting here.

Fantastic American art and the museum has a great layout. What can I say, it's Edward Hopper's home.

First time visiting the Whitney. Obvious but it would have been better without my six-year-old in tow. Experience is somewhat also dependent on rotating exhibition space. Some really nice permanent pieces. Killer view from upstairs that distracted the kid for a bit. Will return and hope for a more leisurely viewing next time.

Perhaps best American museum in the world together with Getty museum in LA. A must visit plus nearby High Line, restaurants, Chelsea Market and Hudson Yards. Viva West Side of NYC. It’s the next big boom in the big apple !

Be sure to get your pay what you wish some 5 days before. Great Museum

Great day! Do Highline and end in Whitney for some very cool modern art and views of NYC. Easy to visit for short time as well

The place to see contemporary art in NYC. Especially since MOMA keeps screwing up renovation after renovation. Viva Renzo Piano!

The rooftop terrace is a nice place to take the sunset photo

What's not to like about Whitney, nothing...this place is awesome. We came here recently to see the Andy Warhol exhibit and really enjoyed the exhibit.
We came on a friday and there was a long line to get in but the line moved fast. After making suggested donations, we checked the exhibit which is spread across multiple floors. Each floor has a different theme and we loved all the different themes. There is a small cafeteria on the top floor and there is a restaurant attached to the museum on the ground floor as well. This is perfect spot for a date night or a visit with friends.
Whitney is now one of my favorite museums in NYC and we will be back here very soon.

Wonderful Hopper exhibit

Beautiful art museum which does a pay what you want between 7-10pm on Friday night.
Normal charge is $25/ adult.

Love the museum. Great exhibition of Jasper Johns. Items are arranged the way you can clearly see how he developed his styles and perfected them through application and re-application within art pieces. You can recognize the same elements on his different work at a particular time of his life. So, you may even treat that somewhat as a quest to look for particular element that signify this creative style at some time of his life. Other exhibits we also enjoyed quite a lot. You get a great view on New York streets and New Jersey from the outside space as a bonus. Nice little cafeteria downstairs. Decent coffee.

This place never gets old since the exhibits are always updated. This place has the best views and one of the best rooftops to have rosé on during the summer. Check before going to visit since exhibits close often and the last time I was there only 3 floors were open.

Beautiful views of the city and beautiful art selection. Staff is great and funny. The elevator was one of the highlights of my visit.
Andrew Allegretti
Great art exhibit. Also has a wonderful little bar and amazing views of the city outside
Bruno REVERSADE
This April 2019, two exhibition floors were closed.
This is a third of the surface area not available, price was not prorated. Besides this, it is pleasent yet nothing unexpected.
Vicente Donnici
Very beautiful museum with great pieces, interesting exhibitions and stunning views.
Tha architecture is amazing.

I was there at the time of the Biennial. Those exhibits (three floors) did not really convince me. I liked the permanent collection better; it has a number of iconic works from Hopper, Lichtenstein, Warhol and others - but just one floor.
Lauren Solina
Museums are my NYC. At varying times I've had great loves with different ones, and the Whitney has just retaken the throne. It's rare that something changes truly for the better, but I couldn't adore the new building and location more! The collection was great per usual. Enjoyed the hell out of the kitchen. Doesn't matter what's on display- just go! Great views of the Little City are a bonus.
Ross Flieger-Allison
The Puerto Rican exhibit about Hurricane Maria was really powerful and worth checking out.
Evie Maldonado
Very crowded, but only because exhibit was great, Andy Warhol exhibit was great

I will never stop taking people here— the new location is breath taking and we loved to walk along the Highline to get to the Whitney. Each floor has an outdoor space with spectacular views of the city and the top floor has a cafe. My boyfriend and I became members to that we could view an exhibit in the 5th floor that was not open to the general public yet and I’m so glad we did! Roomy, light and thoughtfully curated. There’s something for every art lover here!

Long lines if you don't book online but line moved very fast the afternoon I was there even though the attendent suggested we come back another day. That was not necessary. Andy Warhol exhibition was on plus a wonderful collection of other 20th and 21st century American Artists. Museum is very close to Chelsea Market and the Highline in the meatpacking district so if you are a tourist you may want to maximize your time do all three while you are in the area. Great views from the terrace off the museum's cafe. Easy to get to on the subway. A short walk from the Union and 14th Avenue stop. Be prepared to spend 2 hours plus if you want to see the entire collection.
Stanley L
Great museum with modern arts.
Compared to MoMA or the MET, the collections in the museum are rather modern from the 20th and the 21st century, and focus on multiple cultures, races, and genders.
This is a great place to visit near the Chelsea area.
I would recommend to spend an afternoon for a full visit in the museum.

Props to the Whitney for being the only museum in Manhattan that I know of that has a fully operational coat check room. The collection is diverse and interesting and the Jasper Johns exhibit was quite a spectacle. That being said, it was very crowded the day I visited and I was a little bit let down by the somewhat limited scale of the collection in comparison to the apparent size of the building. I also think it would be helpful to post a PDF map of the museum on the website so visitors can get a better understanding of the museum's size before visiting.
