Reviews of Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration
MJG
Definitely a must do when visiting NYC. This place is iconic. The amount of people that have came through here when immigrating to America is substantial. The museum here is fantastic. Much more informative than I thought it would be. I wasn't expecting them to have so much information on many of the immigrants on display here. The architecture is very nice as well and the lineups in mid July to get back on the boat weren't too bad. The grounds are beautiful, washrooms are clean.
Highly recommend.
5/5.

Let me start with recommending you visit as early as possible. My husband and I took the 9am ferry from Liberty State Park, New Jersey to Ellis Island. I say this because we spent a very long time visiting the museum and when we’re leaving the museum to continue to our next stop, the Statue of Liberty, there were crowds of people coming to the museum. I think silence is incredibly powerful when your walking through the steps of the immigrant experience. But maybe that’s just me…
I consider The Journey: New Eras of Immigration” exhibits one of the most profoundly emotional experiences. It focuses on immigration from 1954 to present times. It offers self-reflection of what is considered one of the greatest privileges- living in America.
We also took the time to search the passenger database which includes names but also other collected information as well. It was very interesting, you should check it out.
The store within the museum is filled with more reading and fun. We bought quite a few books and Gertrud’s Teddy Bear.
Both my husband and I were moved by our visit to Ellis Island, we agree it is the highlight of our trip to New Jersey/New York.
Quinten Klingonsmith
To really enjoy this visit, be prepared to read a lot. The immigrant experiences portrayed through the museum exhibits are very engaging, and the best part of the trip. It really makes you appreciate not only your own ancestors, but all those who have come seeking a better life. Make sure to get up to the second floor. The architecture is amazing.
Dan Quine
Truly fascinating glimpse into a time when America welcomed mass immigration. If you get the chance, take the hard hat tour of the unrestored hospital. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and you get to see a part of the island that is not otherwise accessible. It is haunting and fascinating. Highly recommended.
Rohan Roy
Wow... so much to see, listen and absorb. If you are truly interested in American history and want to know all about the early immigrants then you need at least 4 hours here at Ellis island to go through the exhibits and audio messages. It's spread over three floors. So please plan your trip accordingly. If you just want to glance through then you can complete the whole thing in an hour. Enjoyed the Fresh lemonade at the cafeteria and the ice cream was great too
John
This was a great experience. The museum here is large, and explains in honest and interesting detail the significance of this fascinating island and its significance to the United States and its history. This is an absolute must-do for a trip to New York and I’d recommend it to anyone.
Anthony O'Connell-Gros
Included in your ticket you can visit this museum on the way back to New York. I think its worth it as the museum has a lot of cool things and you can learn a lot. The museum is big so despite there being many at the statue the museum is decently empty. The only thing is it gets quite repetitive, with the samenor similar information multiple times. Still worth a visit though.
Michael Christopher
This museum is very nicely set up with good displays. It is inside one of the original Ellis island processing buildings and they have restored most of it. if you want to have a nice day learning about history this is the place to go. the ferry ride from NYC .
NJ Cruz
loved the riches and vast amount of information available at Ellis Island. The history, preservation of artifacts, documents and pictures makes it a valuable experience. If you really wish to make the most of it, plan for at least 3 hrs.
Staff was helpful. Cafeteria and gift shop on site!
Jennifer Le
The only way to visit is via City Statue Cruises, which also takes you to Liberty Island. Audio tour is included in the price (about $24 to take the ship to both Ellis Island and the Statue Liberty), which takes you through the journey of coming to Ellis Island as an immigrant as well as the process of restoring the immigration center. There’s a decent cafe and you can sit in the actual dining halls. When I was there the research center where they will help you search for your ancestors was closed. Can easily spend 3-4 hours here.

Ellis Island was an important gateway for immigrants to begin their new life in America. The park is well organized. Pick up a free audio device to unpack the history of this unique site to our evolving society. Don't miss the kiosk area on the 1st floor to hear how controversial issues were presented in historical context.
Dvir Koenigstein
The ferry to liberty island will stop here, don't skip this historic site so as you plan your visit leave some time to spend here. As you enter the museum you can pick up a free audio tour guide that makes the visit come to life. Even kids will enjoy navigating the spaces and the special kid oriented audio guide. Sounds and voices of people who were processed on the island bring the visit to life. There is a little cafeteria on site with a selection of snacks hot cooked foods and drinks. You can also search historic immigration records ($). Part of the museum is actually dedicated to current concepts of USA immigration and citizenship process. Restroom on site. The ferry from here will take you back to Battery park. You will also get some more views of the city and lady liberty.
Manisit Das
A great chronicle of the immigrant experience in the US. This includes not only Ellis Island immigrants, but also more recent day immigrants, and their experiences. It was very emotional to visit this place as an immigrant myself. Highly recommend to visit, regardless of whether you are an immigrant or not, to empathize with what immigrants go through, and what they bring to this country.
Lewis Dean
Really interesting museum, definitely worth the trip (combined with a stop at the Statue of Liberty). The information is informative, the audio guide is well made, and the displays are interesting. Could be a bit clearer where to go, and the audio guide stickers seemed missing in places, but the audio guide generally tells you at the end of each guide which direction to head, so ultimately no real issues. Staff were friendly too, and they had plenty of exhibitions on as well.
Joseph Wilson
If you're interested in history and you're in NYC, then this place will definitely be worth your time. It's a very short ferry ride to get there.
The island itself is pretty large and you can easily spend a few hours looking around and taking in everything.
Very interesting history. We loved it!
Piotr Zawiślak
Amazing museum, worth to stay there 3 hours. Lots of information about the immigration throughout the last two centuries. Really easy way to bring closer the history. Also available a website where everyone can find an information about a relatives who might immigrate to US in the past :)
scmi7y
Great place to visit. A little pricy.
I toke the ferry at Liberty State Park which was $24-$98
Ferry alone $24
Add on: Xtra access(+$24) Guide (+$50)
I recommend just doing the trip yourself.
Lots of information. You can spend hours reading everything. Or do a quick walk through and get a few facts here and there.
Don't forget to take a picture of the boat schedule.
On location maps and schedules are provided throughout the museum.
(all pictures are views from the boat or from the island)

This museum is part of the tour to the Statue of Liberty. It is worth the stop and there you can better understand the process of population growth in the United States. It's amazing how those people in the past were able to submit to often inhumane conditions to try to make a better life. Much respect to these people and families.
Luke Carlson
What a cool place. If you have the time to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in the same day, I would recommend it. Both island visits come with the cost of your ferry ticket and can be easily purchased online. There is so much history and cool exhibits in the museum. They have a program that you can look up names of people that have immigrated through Ellis Island.
Thomas Neel
A truly remarkable location to visit, especially from a historical perspective. There is so much different things to see in the museum, from photographs to many different exhibits and an informative movie. Definitely a fascinating place and a must-see if you visit New York
Kiera Tierney Giles
The cost for Ellis Island was included in our ferry tickets to Liberty Island which was $24. Don't miss the wall with all the names on it. I only knew it was there because my foster sister told me she had a relatives name on it. It took the whole time I was there before we found it. It is behind the main building. If you're facing the main building follow the grounds to the right, it's in alphabetical order on both sides. We did not get to visit the hospital everything on that side of the island was closed
Heli Roy
This was an amazing experience. We spent the whole day between the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and you could spend so much more time in each place. If I was in New York, I would probably go regularly, there is so much to see. The whole process was very easy. I bought tickets on-line ahead of time. I was worried about not making it in on time, but when we got there, there was a huge a line. There were people checking tickets and then we had to go through a regular airport style security check before getting on the boat. It probably took no more than 15 minutes. I don't think they worried about the time, just the fact that you had a valid ticket. I definitely want to go back.
Jake L
A deeply interesting look into the history of the immigration process, and tips and tricks the immigrants used at the time. Lots of the museum still feels like it would have then, helping giving a hint of what they went through.
The only downside is a very long wait for the ferry, pretty rough on the hot day we were there. I'd recommend visiting the island as early as possible.
Think About It
This was the 1st stop on wonderful and short ferry ride from New Jersey side. Totally worth my time as I perused whole building from top to bottom. Stairs to 3rd floor but also elevator for those who can't. I received excellent guidance from park ranger that helped with the overwhelming building. 1980's abandoned to complete renovations are truly amazing !!! Well done exhibits! Cafe food was delicious and much variety. Spaces to eat inside or outside. Clean bathrooms, easy serve yourself dining. Lots of chairs. Easy to navigate for a 1st timer like me. Bravo Ellis Island park contributors!!!
Kevin Delos Santos
Most people come for the Statue of Liberty, but this is stop you really need to see. Everyone should visit this museum at least once. Walking through all the exhibits you can read about how just about every ethnic group that came here had similar experiences. Chinese, Irish, etc. If you pay attention to politics, you can probably think of at least 2 groups of people that will probably end up having their experiences added to this museum someday. We like to say study history to learn from it, but it seems to be repeating itself.
C&K Getaways
My mom, daughter and I visited Ellis Island as part of a combination tour to Liberty Island. We really did not know what to expect. By the time the tour was over, we all 3 had decided that Ellis Island was our favorite stop of the tour. We didn't realize just how much there was to see and do there! We learned a lot about that piece of history, plus information on more current immigration. There were so many displays and things to read/ listen to/ see that we spent several hours there wandering around.
Darren Barrett
A fabulous place to visit to stand in the footsteps of the immigrants from days gone by and to hear their stories of being checked on entry to the USA and of those who weren't permitted abd were sent back.
A free audio tour is available and highly recommended as it had at every location a number you type in and then subsequently heard the story attached to the relevant artefact.
There was also the chance to search for relatives on a database for their history through Ellis Island and beyond, and for a small fee we researched our relative and found out new information about their life in the USA.
A nice cafe on site has hot and cold drinks and snacks and we're reasonably priced.
Two small gift shops are on site with various books and gifts and the opportunity to study the history of your name and its origins.
A great day all in all and very interesting.
Jennifer Brennan
We visited during our Christmas holidays. We left early in the morning, so the lines were not too bad. Take your time going through the building. All the areas are incredibly interesting.
High Recommended.
Aimee Lim
Our visit here was short due to not enough time for us to roam around. We stayed so long in the statue of liberty. This place is historical and a lot to learn about firts years of ommigration. They have coffee shop ...warm us up . Was windy and cold that day. Souvenier shop too. Awesome view of NYC and the Statue of Liberty.
Tz Y
It's very informative to see what the early people experience while arriving in the United States. There's all kinds if screening and checks involved with every individual that passes through the border. Always take your time and read everything and enjoy the pictures.
Irfan Silalahi
I visited the museum as part of the New York Pass. Book the ferry through Statue City Cruises.
Immerse yourself in the historic building where immigrants went through thorough checks before getting into New York. There are simulations during the visit to go through the experience as immigrants or the officers. Get the complimentary audio guides to hear stories from people who experienced the immigration first hand.
Ronald Ewert
Ok, so get an early ferry reservation. Get off at Liberty 🗽 island. Skip the tours and pedestal. Take a quick look at the liberty museum and get back on the uncrowded ferry ⛴ to the immigration museum on Ellis Island ahead of the crowds. This is a great place to spend some time! …
Kevin Wallis
At least 3 hours needed. Audio tour is free and perfect for all ages. Be aware of boat shuttle times.
Ilianexis Burgos-Diaz
This would've been better if it wouldn't be so cold the day I went. But overall was beautiful. I will recommend to get the City Pass for all the museum.
P Gajaananan
This is a place everyone should visit. They have detailed information on the history on USA (specially regarding immigration). My advise is to plan to spend minimum 2 hours. There is so much to read and learn
Maggi Simpson
The Ellis Island museum was very interesting. We took a guided tour to both Liberty 🗽 Island and Ellis Island, which honestly wasn’t worth the money we paid. The guide was great but the tour is reasonably priced and easy to navigate without a guide and includes ferry tickets between the islands. The restaurant food was seriously overpriced, but they have to transport it to the island, so justified I suppose.
Mafer Vega
Loved it. Went to Liberty Island first, then took the ferry from there to Ellis Island. It's very cold in the ferry during winter (outside) so be sure to dress appropriately.
The place is fantastic, so much history and stories of hope and loss, very well organized. There's a café if you get hungry, they have muffins and sandwiches, and a gift shop with lots of souvenirs.
*I bought my ticket online as part of the Librety Statue and Ellis Island museum package. All ferries are included.
Ellyn Davis
This museum is very nicely set up with good displays. It is inside one of the original Ellis island processing buildings and they have restored most of it. It is all included with the price of a ferry ticket to the Statue of Liberty. I learned a lot from this museum. There are two gift shops inside and a cafe as well. If you are visiting NYC and especially if you had ancestors come through Ellis island, this is such a good place to visit.
Alessandro Pisi
Any American needs to know how they became American and this is the only place anyone can trace their history and ancestry.. it's so fantastic and just nostalgic and emotional.. just go and understand the importance of what this island is and what it means to the history of this whole nation
Johanna Baez
Great place to learn some history. The audio tours were really good. Lots of reading. Beautiful structure
Oliver S (23GT.net)
The Ellis Island Museum provides a fascinating overview of immigration in the United States from the well-known instances - such as the Irish diaspora due to the potato famine of the 1800s - to the utterly obscure, like the handful of Filipino galleon sailors who escaped their lot by fleeing to Louisiana in 1765, centuries before the Filipino people's own global diaspora.
The building housing the museum itself practically oozes history as you wander through the various areas that served to house thousands of new arrivals to America decades ago as they themselves navigated the intricacies of entering a different country. The restored Registry Room on the second floor in particular is majestic in its size and the fact that every day for decades it was the most important step for new immigrants as they first registered to enter the country. Side rooms have more focused exhibits that chronicle various aspects of the process from medical exams to getting transportation once approved to the dreaded chalk marks that were put on immigrants' coats that sometimes meant a sad trip back to Europe after rejection.
There are also two theaters showing the moving 35-minute documentary “Island of Hope, Island of Tears” that's well worth the watch.
Lastly, the museum store is chock full of great souvenirs of both Ellis Island and Liberty Island and the staff are very helpful.
As an immigrant myself I found the museum to be fascinating and would have budgeted more time for it if I'd been able to. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in our nation's history.
Claire Bina
This is a must see if you ever have the chance. The interactive tour was really good. It was a very emotional experience to walk in the footsteps of ancestors and loved ones. To see what they saw. To think about my grandparents walking these same stairways scared, excited. What an experience.
Deon Lim
Very comprehensive and enriching experience of the immigration and origins of US. Learnt so much about the history of the country during my visit. Keep an open mind.
Josh Daniels
Really well done museum about the history of the island and immigration in America more broadly and the stories and experiences of the immigrants who passed through Ellis island. Admission is included in the ticket for the statute of liberty ferry. Great views of lower Manhattan skyline too.
Katia Ortiz
A complete museum, impeccable, it includes audio guides in many languages, a good environment, and the concept is beautifully elaborated, you can see that the information has been thoroughly researched and it has a lot of interactivity.
jamie ford
Very impressive building with loads of history and is run extremely well with audio tours available (we didn't use but saw it being used alot)
Everything was clean and well presented and is clearly well looked after
David Toner
Remembered for your ticket you can visit this historical center returning to New York. I believe its worth the effort as the gallery has a ton of cool things and you can gain some significant experience. The gallery is enormous so notwithstanding there being numerous at the sculpture the historical center is modestly vacant. The main thing is it gets very tedious, with the samenor comparative data on different occasions. However, still worth a visit.
Vinny Ryan
Very good museum and bluetooth tour. We were also able to see where our ancestors entered the US will over a hundred years ago, even the name of the ship they came on.
Michele Williams
Great historical information. It's worth the money if you like history. If not, pass this adventure up or you'll be bored.
Robin Davi
You can research relatives that traveled through here and see (and order copies of) ship manifest and photos of the ship. The audio tour is amazingly detailed and the exhibits are incredible.
Visit as early as possible and come from the New Jersey side to avoid the huge crowds.
M CC
Bought a ticket in person that included this island and the Statue of Liberty. Recommend buying it advance so you can access the higher parts of the statue. Ellis Island is amazing just for its historic value as a place for immigrants! A couple of gift shops were available on the first floor including documents you can buy that has information on ancestors to Ellis Island (if you have any because I didn't according to the database). The cafe food was good and I suggest the New Yorker burger if you get the chance!
Anastasia Maxfield
So much history. Knowing my family had been here and had gone through this experience was something I had always wanted to see in my lifetime. I’m so grateful to have gotten to experience this.
Rick Kim
We went for the hard hat tour with my teenage boy. Was pricy but the tour was excellent. The guide Sara told a great story on immigrant history. Due to the damage from hurricane Sandy some parts of the building weren't accessible.
Alan Varghese
A humbling experience where you learn the historical struggles and aspirations of immigrants trying to find a new home in America.
Very strongly recommend visiting and spending the 2-3 hours it takes to go through the exhibits and learn about the history of immigration from the early 1600s, irrespective of whether you are an immigrant or not. It is free to visit with your Statue of Liberty ticket.
There is also a center inside where you can look up how your ancestors reached New York when they immigrated.
Learning how immigrants were screened, accessed for literacy and disease, what they had to go through and how hard it was for them when they arrived especially in the early 1900 makes you feel grateful for how things are now.
They also have a nice gift shop and audio phone to look and listen.
Joseph Strohmeyer
Very interesting experience. It is very amazing all the immigrants that passed through Ellis island. The USA is a country of immigrants 😊 …
Kate S
One of the best attractions NYC has to offer. I spent about 2 hours there after going to Liberty Island. The free audio guide was very informative. You book via Statue City Cruises where boat ride to Liberty and Ellis islands are included.
Brenda Duggan
Staff were friendly. Bathrooms clean and no line up. The information and displays are engaging and meander through the levels of the building. This is a must see.
Nabil Yousef
Very interesting museum in a historic building. I recommend watching the 30-minute movie in the theatre to learn everything about Ellis Island and the immigrants who passed there.
Ricky Moorehead
This is a most see.
It really can open people's eyes to how America was built and how people would do anything to get here to include being separated from their family and / or putting themselves into indebted servitude. Meaning they worked off the price of their ticket to whomever paid their fares, sometimes working it off for a few years. Funny how people detest separating family and or hard work. However, it was common. The island processed like 5000 people a day and they did anything could do to land upto and including selling themselves to whomever paid their fare when they arrived.
We need to understand that Ellis was the central point of entry to anyone coming to America, and that shaped who we are and how we built America.
If you're headed to NYC and plan to see the Staute of Liberty, make time for Ellis Island. They staute might of been there first glimpse of a new life, but Ellis island is were it really began......
Karyn Arnold
Very interesting place to visit. Buying tickets online wasn't so easy. Boat ride was lovely. Cafe could have been run more efficiently.
kennard smith
Had an awesome experience. Amazing heritage and knowledge. A must for visitors and travelers seeking knowledge of where u came from!
Emma Howard
Great place to see. A must stop off on the way back from Statue of Liberty. Soo much to read in the museum. Take at least 2hrs.
Kay Campbell
Interesting walk through the American immigrant experience-- including the earliest immigrants. Take away? America has always had an uneasy relationship with newcomers -- and humans are always on the move. Good for children & adults from upper elementary on up. Decent food fairly priced in the diner & lovely outdoor seating area.
elizabeth connolly
Go back in time, look for your ancestors names, bought city passes, got ferry to statue of liberty & Ellis Island, stunning views, but be prepared a very emotional place, the displays & artifacts are fascinating & transports you back in time well worth the visit & highly recommend ♥️
Bea Eros
We been there from the ship cruise around Statue of Liberty and this was included so not sure if you can buy tickets there. Brutal to see how was the immigration people handled 200years ago.
Tony Dee
Was there to visit the past history of my family coming to America. My grandparents from Italy. Was there for 3 hours. Visited all 3 floors saw all the place had to offer.
It's was taking a step back into the early 1900s. The history of immagration was fantastic. A lot to read and absorb. The displays are old world. A nice step back into time.👍👍
Talia Kap
Definitely visit if you’re in nyc.. we did it together with the Statue of Liberty cruise and it was sooo nice.
Glory Cone
A great visit. Theysaythe audio tour is 45 min, but we spent over an hour just listening to the audio on the 2nd floor
Angel Harwick
Great experience. Definitely worth the trip and cost. We spent way more time than we had planned.
Clyde vanSchmitt
My Grandparents came thru here and I found their names on the wall. They used tell me their stories. It really gave a new feeling to be a proud American.
Sheryl Siegele
Awe-inspiring, must-see destination. Reminds one of the stories of the immigrants who truly built our great nation!💟💌💙
As with all National Park destinations (Rocky Mountain National Park, The St. Louis Arch, Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the Washington Monument, ETC.!) you must now get a ticket (only $1.00@ extraction.gov.) to reserve an entrance time. The intent is to control crowd density. Be aware that these may be sold out for weeks; plan ahead!
John Millar
If you’re not descended from immigrants may not be that interesting. The history of anti immigration over the years was interesting though
Mike Glad
I was looking forward to looking up my ancestors that came through here. They do have a service but it costs $10.00 for 30 minutes. We chose the option to scan the QR code and do it at home.
Daniel Porter
Lots to do but alot of the stuff is grossly overpriced in the cafe, giftshops etc. Still The tour is a must do for anyone who has never done it before.
Valerie Mills
I found it intriguing, tho my sister found it different from her visit before, as it had been all but destroyed from Hurricane Sandy. I had such a great day, absolutely the best museum. We had planned a few hours and we spent the day. This is a do not miss opportunity.
Leandro Augusto Bizarro
Amazing place with the immigration history. A lot of things to see including objects, photos, history, audio messages and more.
Samantha Holmes
Was an emotional, educational, fulfilling journey. Didn't have enough time to view everything, as we didn't get there till 4ish and the last ferry leaves at 630... if just barely looked and moved fast probably could have, but was taking time and reading and taking it all in... will definitely be back to finish! Didn't take as many photos as I had wanted as phone died.
James Reynolds
Definitely a must visit at some point in your life. I recommend going as a kid and returning as an adult. Total different experience and understanding.
Andre McMahon
Great historical experience to come see where our ancestors entered America!
Domenico De Santo
I think this place with the state of liberty is a must do. This museum is part of everyone and shows how America is been made from the immigrants.
EJ Sokias
Included with admission to the Statue of Liberty is the less talked about museum on Ellis Island. A touching homage to America’s 13 million migrants from Europe and the far East between 1890 and 1920. Make sure to watch the 30 minute documentary ‘Island of Hope, Island of Tears’; plays hourly on the hour.
Bren K
Excellent piece of history. Kept as original as possible. Makes for an amazing walk the information you will find on here it's mesmerizing ..come with a lot of free time so you can visit every gallery, every room, and read every piece of information, priceless.. it will take 4 to 5 hours to fully enjoy and complete.
Justine Vild
My father-in-law came through here about 70 years ago so it was meaningful to bring my daughter through here to see a little of her history. We arrived a few minutes after 1pm (took the 12:50 ferry from Liberty Island) and left on a ferry to head back to NY at about 2:10.
Once you arrive, grab a free audio guide in your language of choice and make your way through the rooms/displays. Even though I've been here before and studied about Eliis Island before, I still learned something new. An hour or so was plenty of time for us. I'm not sure if there was anything else on the island to see but it is definitely worth a stop! Got back to the ferry terminal and off the ferry about 2:25.
Mr Huntington Beach Real Estate
Ferry from the Statue of Liberty was easy to hop. As the day wears on the line gets longer. Make sure to have enough time to spend here because there are many floors to the museum. We wish we spent more time here. We saw some real cool posters in Lithuanian that talked about how to immerse within the American culture. My Grandfather taught one of those classes when he lived he 100 years ago.
Nathan Hale
The audio guide was amazing! Beautiful interesting history, I definitely learned a lot!
Jacob
Great museum with a lot to see. The only way to get there is to take the ferry to Liberty island where Statue of Liberty is located and take the next boat.
Raphael Sharta
This was a spectacular visit. This museum is full of history and tells a great story of the immigrants and their ordeals . I visited the luggage room and the registry room . Its worth mentioning that the museum has all declarations and documentation of the black, Asian and other immigrants and also as at when I visited there was no show going on at the theatres in this museum . If you're visiting this museum ensure you stop at liberty island first as the next stop will be Ellis Island.
Curt
I love history, and this place is the beginning of 40 million Americans America history.
Elia Mikhael
Lots of history, informative exhibits, and even a research centre. Worth a visit for sure
msbusyblonde
Skipped Liberty island due to the lines to get back on the ferry but wasn't gonna miss Ellis. The line to get back on the boat was at least shaded on Ellis. Interesting to learn not only about the immigrant history but also history of ownership and construction of the island. Enjoyed the free 30 min park ranger tour and then explored on our own.
Marie
Very great museum. Very interesting and well done.
banange1
The museum is really incredible. I cannot recommend it enough for people interest in history. Amazing photographs and audio tour. Families of people who went through the immigration process there have donated items and there are amazing exhibits displaying the clothing etc. Must see when visiting the area!
Cheryl Paulson
Loved visiting Ellis Island. It's humbling to stand in a place where so many US citizens were minted.
Liz Smith
Not many actual artifacts, but a lot of images. Historical and a good attraction
Jens Wagner
Very interesting tour! I think you could easily spend at least 2 days reading the panels and learning the history of Ellis Island and the things that occurred in the history of America. Some rather incredible stories. A must do for anyone!
Meghana Jadav
Interesting history showcased here. This place has a small giftshop and a cafe! Good to visit!
Shelly Kidd-thomas
Amazing history and stories! Statue Cruises took us straight there, we picked up our audio tour headphones and walked the area. So good!

The Ellis Island Museum is so well done if a bit sprawling. It wasn't crowded at all when we went but I imagine the space is good when it's very busy. There are three levels to explore, some spaces having been restored to their original look to make it feel like you're stepping back in time. The history feels very heavy here and you'll need at least 2 hours if you want to read and view everything.
The junior ranger program for Ellis Island is separate from the statue of liberty badge so make sure you don't miss it like I nearly did. Pick up your junior ranger books from the visitor center and complete them for a second badge, separate from the Liberty Island badge.
Florian Blas
Truly fantastic for anyone who can appreciate the historical importance of what Ellis Island represents to the US. The museum itself has superb exhibits, including photographs, belongings, posters, and many other objects dating back to the busy days in the island. Definitely worth a day trip, you dont really need more than two hours to see and enjoy this gem of American history.
Brian Dobbe
Better than I thought. Be prepared for long lines while waiting for the boat. Lots to see and lots of walking. Glad I didn't do the hard hat tour - I'm sure it was good, but it would have added many more steps to my 17,000 that I did that day.
Shannon Roth
Interesting display of immigration the burdens placed on 3 Rd class passengers.
We purchased the Hard Hat Tour. Highly recommend because it is interesting and you get to see the old infectious hospital. The docent was extremely knowledgeable and enjoyed her job. The tour allows you to skip to the front of the security line.
Charlene Constantino
Must go. You can spend hours inside the.museum. good food. Souvenir shops..
Can have a.picnic. bring a blanket to lay on and some food/drinks.
Bring a jacket.. inside of the.museum is a bit chilly to preserve the.exhibits
Amazing Grace
This is the first place where immigrants of 18th century landed when they came in the steam boats..there are many pictures and video depicting their journey and the rooms have been renovated to give you a sense of what it looked like during those times.
It' s great place to take a family trip to see the historical place the grounds are also immaculate and one can relax while waiting on the return of the ferry.
Celine
The best museum I have ever visited. So worthwhile for every American, and any tourist visiting the US. The exhibitions are laid out beautifully and encompass a range of oral history interviews, photographs, writing and music. I would recommend spending up to 4-6 hours there if you can - perhaps taking a lunch break in the middle - if you truly want to make the most of this impressive museum. We got there as soon as it opened to avoid any large crowds. The free audio guide is also a must. What an incredible, immersive experience!
The only downside is that the giftshop is just not ideal... very touristy, and for the most part, unrelated to the immigration museum. It would be great to have large photographic portraits to buy from the exhibitions, a wider range of postcards, and a more specific range of books geared to those interested in US immigration history.
William Clark
All I can say is wow. The wealth of information that I learned about the immigrants that packed up everything they owned and came to the US for a new start, just blew my mind. I had no idea the trials and tribulations that they were forced to go through just to get here and once they did, what all they had to endure just to be allowed into this country. I initially didn’t even plan on visiting Ellis Island, but when I found out the ferry taxied you back and forth, I decided to go and see what it was like. I am so thankful that I did!! I’m ashamed to say, but I enjoyed Ellis Island more then I did Liberty Island. I would highly highly encourage everyone to visit the Ellis Island museum which is free with ferry taxi.
Andrea Murphy
If your into a bit of history right up your street that's for sure. Audio tour is included or go can go round yourself and read. We only down one part as we had been out all day and just wanted to get back to the hotel. We used our Go City pass and this got us onto Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Jenna Squires
I loved this experience. I looked on my family tree app while waiting for the ferry and found an ancestor who came through Ellis Island in 1873, that was a beautiful part of the process. It's a beautiful place, with a wonderful spirit of America, and hope.
Elizabeth Dawes
Very cool! Almost overwhelming amount of information to take in.
JOY YAU
It is truly wonderful experience and before you come you maybe know that United States is a immigration's country but there is no proof when you arrive this Museum you will see a lot of the evidence that in this 200 years ago or maybe longer date before they are so many different country people come to the land of the United States to have their new life
when you off the boat and step into the museum, pls not miss the audio guide machine taking with your own language or to a machine for free and then just follow the instruction and then you will have a virtual tour guide get you through this very big museum.
I think the most inspired me is the second floor inspection Hall , in here you will see vast number of photo and audio records that just not long ago when the people arrived the US they almost taking ship, so the Ellis Island is the first stop of the arrival of United States. The new immigrant have to wait here let the inspector to ask their question and then go through the medical check. and then the mental check, having food a strange Monday and then land the Manhattan and then by train ticket to auto parts of the United States and meet their relative or lovers...
Just not difficult to imagine that if you don't know the English language, you wait so long in here and not knowing that if you will not deny that to enter the United States. There is a one common space so expression in the photos, Most of the people are facial less, I think they are too tired or desperated.
Zeri
Fantastic museum overviewing the different nations which came to America throughout the years for economic, social and political causes. I recommend buying the joined ticket with the ferry cruise and statue of Liberty visit. If you miss one ferry they are relax with it, as they will simply let you board the next one.
John Wilford
This place was an amazing exhibition of history. In short this is what I learned. There were a whole bunch of different kinds of people with skin like mine trying to get into America and we made it confusing and disorienting as hell for them to get in but went ahead and let 98% of them in anyway... We don't need to talk about those 2% 😬
Jane West
Ellis Island museum reminds us of the courage it takes to leave your country and everything you know and the distress and dislocation suffered by all immigrants. I went to the Transit Museum yesterday, and learnt where a lot of Ellis Island immigrants found work. I'm glad I saw both to make the links. I was struck by how many different people came so far for an opportunity for a better life. It echoes the immigrant experience in Australia. Definitely go. You'll learn so much.
My only negatives - I thought the cafe could be better and the ferry could be more regular. When we were returning, we were crushed in with people of all ages in the sun and had to wait to get onto the ferry. It made me think about the immigrants that had been herded off ships and had to stand around in huge numbers bewildered by the experience. So I suppose the minor discomfort of waiting offered an opportunity for reflection 🙂
Michael Luxmore
Fascinating place telling the story of immigration into the USA. Photos of people from the time. The trip was a boat from Battery Park and included Liberty Island. The price shown was for seniors. There is an excellent cafe in the museum, with great friendly staff.
Maud Vincent
This museum needs to have more interactive and children friendly installations. It's very instructive, has great architecture and history but presentation is bland. Teens and kids get bored quickly.
Gavin McLaughlin
Really interesting look at how thorough immigration was. Incredible history. If you have ever watched The Godfather 2, it seems very accurate (although they did not film in Ellis island)
Monica Mazza
A museum where the visitor can see a lot of the history of the immigration to the United States. Well kept and clearly explained. The exposition is organised according to the different periods. I have been touched by the suffering of all the immigrants and thought that the world hasn't changed!
UYEN KHANH Tran
My kid loved it here. Interactive models here are very engaging. Interesting information. The museum really helps us understand the hardship immigrants went through.

Prior to 1890, individual states, rather than the Federal Government, regulated immigration into the United States. Castle Garden (now Castle Clinton), located in the Battery of Manhattan, served as the New York State immigration station from 1855 to 1890. Approximately eight million immigrants passed through its doors, mostly from Northern European countries; this constituted the first large wave of immigrants to settle and populate the U.S.
In the 1800s, rising political instability, economic distress, and religious persecution plagued Europe, fueling the largest mass human migration in the history of the world. Around 1890, it became apparent that Castle Garden was ill-equipped and unprepared to handle the mass influx, leading the Federal government to construct a new immigration station on Ellis Island. During construction, the Barge Office in the Battery was used for immigrant processing.
The new structure on Ellis Island began receiving arriving immigrants on January 1, 1892. Annie Moore, a teenage girl from Ireland, accompanied by her two younger brothers, made history as the very first immigrant to be processed at Ellis Island. Over the next 62 years, more than 12 million immigrants would arrive in the United States via Ellis Island.
Ashtride Ramdas
I initially was not interested in visiting Ellis Island, however it was included in my ticket so why not. I was very glad I did visit it! There is so much history contained within this island. Incredible views of the city as well
David Siah
The photos of actual immigrants to US and their tough migration journey stories are very touching
Jay Crossler
Not what I expected. They do an excellent job demonstrating how painful the experience it was for many immigrants. This is not the “textbook” experience. I found it worthwhile to show my kids an alternate perspective that is much more based in reality.
Christoph Zauchner
Perfect 👍Interesting walking tour for the history of immigration 🌎 Great view of the skyline 🌇 …
Tilman Benecke
This is really an impressive historical museum. A place with so much history, it is sometimes uncomfortable when you look at all the exhibits. Anyone who has made it this far has almost been in the promised land, but only almost.
Bill Rosedale
Fascinating yet moving record of early US immigration
Alan Aim (Ramblin' Rover)
Really interesting to see how immigration has changed from the 1800s to how it's being handled today. The pull of people from around the world to come to the US because it offered something better than what they had elsewhere.
Harris needs to do this tour for some education.
Heilens Galue
Really nice place make you think a lot about what immigrants suffer and why the come here
Asma I love the way it ended Abbasi
It was very historical and a lot of information about the immigration system and overall UA. Would recommend making it more kid friendly and interactive for them. Love the audio tour.
TV Galaxy
Historical museum where we see the place of reception of immigrants who came to USA!!!
Herman Rijken
Great place to visit to learn about the story of being an immigrant and how they were dealt with by the government. It is an honest retelling while you move through the various exhibitions and original rooms.
Conor Neill
Could have stayed so much longer, so much history and to read. I really enjoyed the personal audio devices. Makes it alot more interesting
Adam Newbold
Meaningful and thought provoking. The museum here is filled to the brim with incredible stories and photos of the countless immigrants who came through this place. I was amazed by the images depicting the struggles and joys these people went through. I think it is am impactful way to spend your afternoon. Give yourself extra time to read, look at photos, and watch the short documentary film in the small theatre. The Park Rangers were friendly and knowledgeable.
Herve KABLA
Very nice and interesting museum
Viraj Lele
Can be missed as Statue of Liberty is more tourist friendly
Kevin J Hunter
Ellis island is a must see attraction for anyone who knows their ancestry came through the island or whose distant relations used this route to USA.
Museum is well put together and has extensive information on the processing of immigrants, changing over time, and some real world stories of individuals to bring it to life. Well worth a visit!
Shawn Harrison
Wonderful place to visit to learn about how people immigrated to the US through New York. Unfortunately, they closed the record search early, so I was not able to look up my GGGF.
Kar-Wing Ho
lived in NYC over 20 years and then moved to the west coast over 20 years ago. finally visited Ellis island in my most recent trip to NY. I took the hard hat tour and it was fabulous. the main museum has 3 self guided audio tours. very informative and entertaining. the hard hat tour was definitely the highlight. you are guided to restricted areas of the hospital. the area is still being restored and for safety reasons, you must wear a hard hat.
Ricc S.
Absolutely a must visit. Extremely humbling to learn all about the people who once came through here. Jump on Statue Cruises. I loved walking through the whole museum, there is even a hard hat tour you might be interested in that takes you off site super cool.
Duncan Payne
This was a really interesting place to visit and to get an idea of the USA's short history. There's an incredible amount of information and detail. It would have been easy to spend a long time there.
Synn “Pirate” Trey
Great experience learning about the history of the United States of America. They have movies and exhibits that will leave in awe. It's very ironic how the United States was built on immigrants from all over the world. We had open arms then and accepted anyone into the country. Now in 2019 its the complete opposite. What happened to our freedom? What happened to our independence? What's happened to our country? Make America Free Again!
Yohanna Garcia
I was mind blowing to see this museum and all the knowledge and the history in one place, I was amazed
Ashutosh Sharma
It's a one-time visit just to see the grand building which houses the museum. Most of it is collection of photos with very little artifacts to display. You can run through that in roughly 60 to 90 mins depending on how much of American history you want to read standing on that island. The ferry ride provides a slightly better view of the NY Sklyine.
One important thing to note is that online it might say it closes at 5.00 PM but the last ferry back from it is around 3.45PM, which moves to Statue of Liberty. SoL starts closing at 4.30.
Luis Galdamez
Great Experience seeing where Americas Immigrants came through. We are a nation of cultures, history and languages. Not one singular individual. We are a nation of Immigrants love seeing this.
D'Aaliyah Hill
Exhibits were in depth and super interesting. Loved reading the stories of some of those that went through the immigration process.
Katharos
I did the audio tour, which I liked. You get the concept of why people came to this country and how it was for them once they arrived.
Barry West
Amazing place full of so much historical significance. It's a must see.
Kiet TT
Nice museum where I got to see how the immigration process worked in the old days.
Vanessa Ferrera
Very impressive, well explained and the tour guides are for free! It really touched my heart.
Prince Mittal
Great place to learn about the Land Of Opportunities!! To truly understand what price people have paid to come here and appreciate what America has to offer.
Proud to be an entrepreneur and paying it forward!!
Kyle McCarthy
Fascinating yet low key museum. Very moving. Powerful exhibits in a wonderful renovation of the palace for the world's poor, where food, healthcare and shelter were once available. Must-see for all Americans.
Emmanuel Hadar
A very interesting museum that tells the story of the American Dream, through the lenses of the immigrants.
Highly recommended.
Mike Blanchard
Learned about the immigrants that came over from other countries and to find a better place to live in America.
Jillian Tweedell
It is amazing to see, knowing the history of this place and how life changing it was for so many. Hard conditions and an even harder start to life.
Joanne Torres
Definitely a great historical place to visit. Learned alot from this trip and would recommend at least a one time visit.
Pritesh Gudge
Really well organised, can take upto a week to get through. Recommend spending time on the second storey
christine liao
Came here for the first time with family. We didn't spend a lot of time here but we learned quite a bit.
There were cool artifacts displayed.
It gives you a glimpse of what people had to go through when they were there.
There was a section where you can search for people who went to the Ellis Island immigration center. The thought of it was cool but, we didn't have anyone to search up.
It wasn't crowded at all so that was good.
Not going to lie, some parts of the building seemed kind of creepy/ spooky.
Skandakumar Kumarasingam
Loved the place. Good exhibits. Do the hard hat tour to get the inside scoop and history. Great views all around of Manhattan
Riechel Fiel
I love visiting museums coz its like your traveling back to the past.
Ellis Island National Museum, was once America's national gateway for the immigrants.
Nocturnal Brewer
Just to know that my great grandfather made entrance here was enough. Knowing what happened inside brings to light what he had to go through to bring the family in.
John Bread
OMG….brings so many flutters to each part of the body…..🥲
It will make even the biggest of men reaching for the hanker-chief….such is the sublime poignancy included in these experiences…..🙏🏻
I didn’t find my Papa…..sad face 😩😭 …
Lucy Gourgeon
The museum is very interesting and well organized. The audio guide gives an immersive experience by taking you through the different steps the immigrants had to go through. Everything is well explained and makes the place emotional
Mitch Roemer
Went with a tour group called experience and we owen thompson who was amazing and told us so much info.. found my family who went thru Ellis island
Savex73
We can learn a lot of historical background here. You will be moved and sad a lot.And I'm sure they'll be proud of the achievements of their ancestors
diana marceta
You experience this museum very emotionally. You see with what ships the immigrants came in, suitcases and luggage. You see how they felt when they were locked up. The main hall is beautiful, but to reflect on what has happened in the past within these walls. So much suffering and fear for people. The exhibiton is really extensive and wonderful. Through the various incredible stories of immigrants and their photographs you really get to know the immigration process.
Mark Ultz
The history was truly amazing to experience ✌🏻 It's a must do 👍🏻 …
Jenna Bull
We really enjoyed this museum. It was really interesting to understand more about the level of immigrants that entered the US in the 1920's. If you like history, definitely visit this place.
Thunder Pets
Being here gave me chills. I learned so much. It was an experience I'm looking forward to having again.
I was lucky enough to be one of the few who saw Lady Liberty's little sister while she was here.
Ivan Porta (GT Rekter)
A very powerful experience. My best friend was able to find his ancestors who immigrated to the states.
Jack Furlong
Such a fun day trip. You could easily spend the entire day here roaming about the museum. Highly recommend to anyone visiting NYC or living in the City!
René Villain
The history is absolutely interesting.
Steve Lipp
Ellis Island is very well curated and well-kept. The Statue City Cruises ferries go regularly, so you can spend sufficient time on either island.
Julie
So much to see here, certainly worth a visit, you can almost envisage the migration but the kids were a little bored as there's a lot of reading for the youngsters. I kept it alive for them a bit longer with images from the Fantastic beasts film, trying to work out where Newt would have come in etc. Reference to the films that have used this place would have been interesting.
KS
Of course this is a national monument and a historically great place to visit for the whole family but especially kids. However what gets you is how well they have maintained the place, how well they keep updating the exhibits and how friendly the staff are. Very clean place where you can spend a few hours easily.
Caroline Stoddart
We enjoyed Ellis Island more than Liberty. The free audio guide was so interesting, 2-3 minute snippets to bring the displays to life. The toilet situation was not great, just 2 stalls for high traffic areas.
Bruno Fernandes
Nicw museum to get inspired about the immigration in NYC.
Les Murphy
We are all immigrants. Many of our ancestors came through Ellis Island and it's humbling to walk in their hallowed footsteps.
Everyone should go there to be reminded of why America is the amazing place that it has been and should continue to be. None of us have experienced any of the hardships that immigrants have faced. You need to see it and feel it and remember where you came from.
Joseph White
We did the self-guided audio tour, which was amazing. They have different audio narrations for kids and adults, which I really like. The kids version explained just enough, without going into details that kids wouldn’t understand. We didn’t do any of the other exhibits.
Talina S.
It's been a very interesting visit that has allowed me to know some points of the American History. A bit sad, though, but necessary.
The surroundings are very green and nice.
Brinda Rao
A great place to learn about the history of immigration, here in the USA.
It’s simply amazing to learn about how this were managed to get the immigrants migrate safe here to US.
Added bonus, great views of Financial district skyline.
Kevin Coleman
Very interesting exhibits telling the back story of immigration through Ellis Island. Also have searchable records. You need more than a few hours to do this attraction justice.
Jamie
What an interesting place. Probably has the most history in the USA as so much happened there.
The early period stuff 17th-18th century) is lengthy paragraphs of British empire bashing and gets very boring very quickly.
The later period stuff (20th/21st century) is more interesting, allocate more time to that
Maruf Ahamed
Beautiful place to visit. You will learn about immigration and some American history.
Marc Franz
Great experience to learn about the history of immigration in the U.S., the audio guide tours are very interesting and interactive so you won‘t get bored. After the tours you can have a great look at the beautiful skyline of New York City.
Shannon R
Great information within! Love the history of this museum, all throughout you are able to find learning opportunities. Place is very busy. Staff that we encountered were very friendly. There are a few cafes within here that had a decent menu selection with rather high prices. We waited in line for about 15 minutes but then gave up as the line had hardly moved at all. Definitely worth a stop here, allow yourself a lot of time for coming so you can make the most of your experience.
Sana Abdullah
I am not much of a Museums person but I really liked an evening out on this Island. I visited this place with a group tour and our guide had stories to share to keep us all interested about the immigrants that came here many years ago.
W Johnson
Honest and unpopular opinion, I thought Ellis Island was just ok. There are exhibits and I think there is a nice run down of its history (good, bad and otherwise) and communicated why it is a historical landmark. Problem is it was not all that interesting in itself.
Adam Croft Broxton
Learned a lot, honestly I was so tired from running around NYC I didn't get to spend the time I wanted to read and take in everything. Exhibits are very well done.
Will be back
Jordan
I wish this was more publicized as its own entity and not just an afterthought to the Statue of Liberty (from the NYC side, at least). I would have allotted much more time for this remarkable piece of American history.
Sharon Behnke
My grandson and I visited during a lull in the pandemic so no long lines, no crowds. This historic site has been meticulously restored with an impressive museum with audio tour.
Christa Galitello
The island is a great museum. It's very detailed and there's a LOT of information to take in. You could spend most of your day here just reading the plaques and information displayed. Some of the best things are seeing pictures of the ships that passengers came on, as well as original passenger lists and immigration papers.
The wall of names that have been dedicated on the island is a sight. It's outside around the side of the building, and just seeing all of the names is so neat.
For those looking for the National Parks Passport Cancelation, there is one by the Information Desk and one in the gift shop next to it.
Rachel Newquist
Probably should have taken the audio tour. Otherwise it is a lot of reading. No truly interactive exhibits. A lot to see, but it wasn't as inspiring as I had hoped
Alex Kemeny
The Ellis Island Immigration Center and Liberty Island Ferry is a must see in NYC. Ellis Island Museum contains photos and stories from the period when it was the entry way into the US from 1892 until 1954. But it's a lot of photos, films and recordings so if you find that stuff dry maybe give it a miss. Nice boat ride though and walking around Liberty Island and hearing via audio guide included in the $18.50 combo Liberty Island and Ellis Island cruise about the history of how the monument was conceived and constructed was very interesting. On Ellis Island we got a bad National Park Guide though. Doug Treem or similar was his name. His talk was more of a American nationalistic propaganda speech than informational. We did learn (from the signage) that 12 million people came through Ellis Island Immigration Center in the 62 years it was open. Doug claimed 13 million and said that 3,000 people a day was average, and 5,000 if it was busy. But hang on, do the maths and it's less than 600 a day. He also said that it only closed 1 to 2 days a year. A lot of the talk was hype and so it seems the numbers he quoted were beefed up by orders of magnitude. All other NPS tour guides I've met on this trip have been great.
Greg “Bosco” Robinson
Spend your whole day at Ellis Island. The museum exhibits, videos and history are excellent.
Micha Polo
Very interesting. Bring enough time! Go early, so it’s not so crowded!
Brian Kuchmak
It's worth the visit. I've been to the statue of liberty several times and never stopped at Ellis island to explore the museum. The displays are really nice and I'm sure the audio tour is informative as well but with so many stops there are crowds of people just blocking the flow of the building. The upstairs main room is amazing and the light that comes in just makes the room even that more beautiful. The history and the way it's laid out makes it even more compelling.
Ted Heck
To really get the most out of the museum, you probably need about 4 hours. We were only there for 2 (not including lunch at the cafe), and it definitely wasn't enough. The self-guided audio tour was pretty impressive, once I got the hang of it, with voices of people talking about their experiences as immigrants and also narration explaining the history. I felt like I got a well-rounded picture of how things happened and what it was like in the years when the immigration center and hospital were in operation. We will definitely go back to see the exhibits we didn't have time to visit.
bhargav kumar
Along with Statue of Liberty, Ellis island is also an important monument. Visit this island first and then statue to fully understand the context behind the gift and conditions back then. Should be patient enough to read the history though Very well documented but too much to take in all at once.
Stephen Dawkins Jr. (SDOTNDASPOT)
Nice to say you've visited. But if your not into history or anything, it's not worth visiting.
shraddha shah
Great place to learn about immigrants history. How they arrived to United states! You’ll get audio tour as well.
Robyn C
Make sure that you save about at least 1 to 2 hours to spend the proper time at Ellis Island.
vijayananda Kodadala
Best place for history buffs to know history of USA with immigration through out the time and the difficulties faced by immigrants during the procedure. One day isn't enough to cover Statue of liberty and Ellis island museum.
Nicole Dobbe
Wonderful place to visit. Found my great grandfather's name on the wall. Very cool.
candice ballenger
Beautiful, plenty of seating.... beautiful great reading and history.
Jennifer Herrmann
I can't imagine how overwhelming this place must have been for immigrants! I needed a map to figure out where to go! Luckily the park rangers are wonderful and helpful!
Tim Taravella
Enjoyed visiting where my great-grandfather entered the USA. Interesting exhibits/photos, beautiful buildings!
Chevi p
I loved it. Hitch lied ain't no damn book 😁.
Matteo Maddes
A very interesting and cultural museum ☀️
Chris Manning
This is a history buffs dream come true on the topic of immigration. The free audio tours were very well made and informative.
Catherine Harte
Great experience today! Not too crowded and I went early. Left from Jersey side!
Martin Bramell
Those that had passed through this landmark paved the way for all of Us.
Through success and failures, We have all come to learn and grow from those successes and failures. It is ok for fall down..... it's how You rise up that shows what We are made of. Each one of Us, no matter Our differences have brought Us to this point. You either are helping someone up or holding them down. Let Us all love Our County and set aside Our differences.
Martin Vanta
Inspiring and must-see destination referring to a long history. Educational and interesting place.
Shannon Gilbert
Be aware that the ferry takes a long time to load and unload. There are snacks on board and bathrooms. Ellis Island did not seem to have the same snack bar situation as the statue of liberty so make sure you come with snacks where you've already eaten. Ellis Island the statue of liberty are a full day trip Don't think you can do this and then go visit four or five other things. There's a 30-minute movie that's free that tells about the island's history. You can check out the museum and check the registry for names. Honestly it kind of feels haunted here.
Jonathan Peterson
Amazing and lots of history, I could spend day just here
Juana Giacolono
This is an amazing experience and piece of American history. If you plan on visiting Liberty and Ellis Island, definitely plan on an all day visit in order to see everything. We started our day with an 11 AM ferry check in and it wasn't enough. We learned so much about our history here.
Jim Wilson
I could have spent 4 or 5 hours wandering here but due to time constraints I managed to go round in 3. Deffo worth the visit.
dylan robert
Explore how people immigrated to the new world 🌎. It's a pretty cool place, and a best view of downtown NYC …
Bob Cain
They run a tight shift here. Only 2% of folks are turned away.
Kieran Brophy
Amazing. Could have stayed longer. Incredible history being told.
Claudia Lewis
Amazing historical site. I have been many times but always learn something new!
Local Expert
What and amazing place to visit with the family and learn about the immigration history our country.
Kevin Flynn
Senior fare was $18.00 per person. Covered everything - Ferries & entrance fees for Ellis Island & Statue of Liberty.
Lorelei Petry
Really amazing place full of history. It is humbling to think what all the immigrants went through to get to the United States. You could spend hours here.
Chris Hartmann
A very good museum. Everyone should visit it in order to remember how the USA were built.
Douglas Clark
Had a great trip here. The exhibit space is wonderful, very thought-provoking and informative. Fascinating bit of American history.
Walter Koczot
Where millions of immigrants entered the USA. So many stories about why immigrants left their home countries, their journeys by sea and what they found when they arrived. Lots to see and learn. Well worth a visit. The cost of the ferry trip includes a stop at the Statue of Liberty. Plan on making a day of it.
Love Ukulele
Interesting museum
Free entrance
Detailing all the immigrants into USA.
This visit were included in the package ticket to Statue of Liberty island
Catherine Oakes
Really interesting! Beautiful architecture and important history about what our ancestors had to go through to get here.
Elaf Mohammed
nice place
The museum is located in the Main Building of the former immigration station complex. The French Renaissance Revival structure, restored to its 1918 - 1924 appearance, tells the moving tales of the 12 million immigrants who entered America through the golden door of Ellis Island. Today, the descendants of those immigrants account for almost half of the American people. In addition, the newly completed Peopling of America Center bookends the Ellis Island era by chronicling immigration to America before the processing station opened in 1892 and after it closed in 1954, right up to the present.
Alberto Vazquez
This is an amazing piece of US history. If you’re a fan of history in general, this is it. Yeah, the Statue of Liberty is cool. But this is the true gem that we almost lost to history if it wasn’t preserved after the 1950s. I highly recommend for you to go, walk around. Reflect and imagine everything that happened in those walls.
Liz Tegart
I enjoyed seeing the Ellis Island National Museum. So much history here!
Traveling Clown
Was really hoping the rails and lines would be just as they were when immigrants were checking in, to get a true experience, but the exhibits kind of made up for that. Truly moving.
Roger Fontaine
So touching.... so many lives lived.

Fantastic museum which should not be skipped! So many people got off the ferry after they visited Liberty Island and this is just sad in my opinion. The museum offers a lot of information about American history, but also insights as to why people left their places of origin, and we enjoyed every part of it. Finding information, photos, passports, of people who left from our home country, Romania, was just the cherry on top.
Olivier Antunes
Very interesting museum, you must visit it if you want to understand US immigration.
You may rush on Liberty Island visit to arrive as soon as possible on ellis island.
Saiprabhu B
Do not skip this place while visiting Statue of Liberty. The interactive exhibits in this museum will transport you back in time when the immigrants processing was happening here at this very location. The tour of the museum was both emotional and informative. Must visit place if you are fond of History.
Johan Ramirez
Wonderful museum with great historical significance.
Venkat Narayan
It's huge and very much information in there. Also there is 2 theater which runs documentary films every 30 mins, good place to take a nap though 😂😂 …
Teashia Stennet
The ceiling was the most beautiful thing to see, i would prefer to see it in it's original format than the displays put up.
Sébastien PILET
Each time i go to this museum, it's very impressive. Take the audio guide to well understanding
To Tyranny
The museum was extremely informative and considered history not only of those who passed through its doors post-statue to pre-1949 but also had dedicated a section to before the building of the statue and a section to present-day immigration. If you had an ancestor that immigrated to the States or just want a immense historical experience, I would recommend going to this place.
Ying Liang
A powerful exhibit everyone should visit if given a chance. Really breaks down the American experience and history of immigration. Whether you think America is a salad bowl or a melting pot, you’ll learn about the hardships that waves of people have faced throughout history. The museum doesn’t shy away from racism and bigotry (some of which unfortunately is still alive and well today). Super important museum to experience.
Ashish Mittal
It was awesome museum. It provides detailed information about America's history.
N P
Entrance is free, you only pay for the boat to go. Nice historical building
Clare Hills
Interesting, recommend watching the 30min movie in the theatre room.
Mukiletschert25 Flo
It's really historical museum, for everyone who loves history of the New York please visit it... I love it.
Joan L
This is an amazing museum about American history and culture.
Trung Chenh
Fantastic collection of history. Highly recommend the audio tour since the recollection of individuals going through Ellis Island is priceless. Our kids, ages 10 and 13, were bored quickly so keep that in mind when making the trip. The details is what made the experience come to life as you walked through the “sorting” process to make it through the island.
Brian Cunnane
Great place to imagine immigrants coming to America to dream of a better life for themselves and there family.
Courtney Ernste
As someone with family that came through Ellis Island, it was a really deep and impactful experience for me. It wasn't all happy but there's definitely some history worth feeling there. Plus, it's so important to know where we came from.
Ana Lucía Arteaga Ortega
You can visit this island after the ferri leave at Statue of Liberty. Just for 20 minutes you can explore the museum and later you continue going to NYC
Francisco Javier Aureliano Gutierrez Lopez
Humbled by the experience. Helped me to understand the complexity of the society and the bravery of the people that came to the US to forge their history
Michelle González
I Great place to visit with family and friends.
Kimberly Schiffman
This museum was much better than I ever anticipated! We spent hours there and still didn't see it all. The audio tour was great too. Visited with teens and a kid and they loved it too
Steve (Gwenste)
Worth the visit loads of history allow a good couple of hours if you can
Fernando Vald
From Gateway to Museum. Interesting museum about immigration through Ellis Island
Issa Haddad
Wonderful experience! If you've never been you should definitely check it out! Beautiful view and learning experience. The newly added museum is a wonderful addition!
Duffee Maddox
This is on the list of top 10 most American places to visit. If American History interests you, you have to visit!
I wouldn't recommend it to young children, there is less interpretation for them. The boat ride is so fun!
Raymond Robinson
Well worth a visit. Could spend a whole day here. Minimum half day for sure. I came here to see the Annie Moore Statue (the other one is in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland). The exhibitions were so interesting. Beautiful views from Ellis Island to everything it surrounds (Statue of Liberty, cityscapes, etc). I recommend you buy your ticket for this and the Statue of Liberty online in order to skip the lines and go straight to the security area. Regular ferries from Battery Park NYC and Liberty State Park NJ.
Eddie Cordy
It was an experience I'm glad that I didn't have to go through. Showing how immigrants had to go through the process of becoming a citizen of the United States. It was informative but somewhat depressing to see how people had to go through the process. But nevertheless it was a good tour.
Dayton Minor
I enjoyed the various exhibits, and the restoration work in the main building, but the real jewel is the hard hat tour.
Norelkys Niño
The historical events that this museums describes are incredible and interesting, everyone should stop here at least once in a lifetime
Rosh R
Very interesting historic experience and great audio tour
Hugo Barrocas
So much history such much hope.
M S
Good Historical Place.. Get Down from the Ferry only if you like History/Museum else it's waste of time for you..
Steve H
Sad but very enlightening, glad we went
Greg Setzer
Lots of History very well done with pictures stories.
Mario Salguero
Ellis Island National Park Museum was an excellent experience. Highly recommend it.
The only bad part was the ferry, Unfortunately I visited on a busy day and the ferries could not handle the high volume of visitors. They were delayed and overcrowded.
Francesco Ponticelli
The Ellis Island Museum is my favorite place to visit when I'm in NYC: you can really feel and understand the history of how the America grew and the story of the immigration. As an Italian from Napoli, where all the ships to the USA and Latin America were sailing from in those years, this is a must see place.
Lynsey Downie
Good museum, slightly sad that’s it’s just a beta stop on Statue of Liberty. Well worth a visit.
lucero castillo
A must visit museum and if you have the ferry to the statue of Liberty it will take you there by free
Arshad Mohammed
Great tour of history of immigration into the United States
BradandJen McCleary
Be sure to save plenty of time to get around to see and do everything. You can tour the unrestored hospital and more. The tour guides are fantastic!
Joseph Wladkowski
Excellent museum of history and contemporary issues on immigration. We only had a couple hours here and easily could have spent many more. The collection and presentation of historical information on Ellis Island, as well as immigration to America, is well done and very tangible. Similarly, the exhibit on modern immigration patterns, causes and challenges is also very informative and works to debunk wrongly held conservative assumptions many people unfortunately still have today.
We also took the Hard Hat tour exploring the medical facilities on Ellis Island and it was fully worth it! Our tour guide was delightful and extremely knowledgeable, and it was interesting to learn more about Ellis Island from this perspective.
The only negative comment would be the café. Despite offering a decent range of food, including GF and vegan options, the food itself is not very good, and the service was SLOW. Instead of waiting 30 minutes in line to order, we could have used the time to visit another part of the museum.
Michelle Mizell
Would highly recommend. Just an FYI the price you pay is for the ferry. Tou can catch it anytime of the day. I had an 8 am reservation and it was so foggy you couldn't see the water. That was when I found out you could catch the ferry anytime. I didn't want to go with the dog like it was.
Jacopo Andrea Nuzzi
4 stars for the history behind it and the view of the skyline.
The museum has kept the same structure as it was before which is actually cool... but inside it was boiling hot and cramped of people (less the optimal, especially with covid).
Ian “Scrappy”
It’s unfortunate a lot of people who visit New York don’t visit Ellis island too. So much history in just one building. If you have a chance and are in New York come here!
Daniel Melgar
Good place to visit with the statue cruises that take you inside to see the museum and the Statue of Liberty.
Valerie Hallows
Extensive exhibits and touching stories of the people making the USA what it is today.
Rebecca Munoz
Amazing to walk in the very space where so many of our ancestors are filled with dreams and fear.
Viancesar
Part of the liberty tour. Really interesting immigration history of America.
Amanda H
If you like history exhibits, this place is for you. It has a little walkthrough that goes through the history of New York, its boroughs, and the predominant immigrant population that helped establish them. Fun little section on how immigration has impacted music as we know it today. I particularly loved seeing all the curated little knick knacks and personal items in display cases.
Maddy Schiavone
So interesting to visit, here you can learn a lot about immigration in the old days.
Jay Simon
Good visit, rich history. Worth the visit
Taoxlegion
It's beautyfull to see history in This way, but the ferry is the only wat to het here and the people working here are extremely rude, the good and drinks are horible thake your own from home because This was the worst hamburger ever and the smoothy is absolutely no smoothy frozen ice whit a flavoure and that for 17 dollars...
Sharon Row
To walk in the same places and take the same steps as my grandparents was one of the most precious gifts I could ever hope for. And to find their names in the registry warmed my heart and soul. A priceless American treasure!
John E. Ross
There are some very interesting exhibits tucked away on the second and third floors of the main building. You should budget two or more hours to have time to read everything or just stroll through to get a sense of all the photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia they have on display. Ferry line to get back to Battery Park was long but they eventually sent over an empty ferry that was able to clear almost the entire line.
Alyce Schmidt
AMAZING, walking into this place, you can feel the history in this building.
Christy S
Very smooth access with online ticketing! Clean, not crowded, no lines, fast security.
Christina Bertrand
Always good to learn something new. I enjoyed it

Oct 2021
A great place to learn history and walk through to experience. The hand held audio is a must and is free, you’re able to walk through with a guide in your hand. I think the people without the audio, missed a big part of the experience being able to here from immigrants from their perspective. The grounds are beautiful.
Jovana Krsikapa
Amazing view! I definitely recommend this for holidays!
Teerasith Russamevipanont
Good to learn US immigration history
Ken Fox
This was so peaceful yet melancholy. By far the most surprising monument I've visited. Highly recommended.
Ashish Tripati
You can feel the history and culture of thousands of people on this island.
Very much worth it, as it is free to visit on your way to the Statue of Liberty.
K Mertens
Nice museum. Lots to see. There was a huge line for lunch, but a nice employee let us know if we didnt get something cooked, there was premade sandwiches and snacks to purchase. We moved to the front of the line and it was great timesaver since the line was long!
Craig Twofoot
Well maintained and extensive. My wife searched for some family members here. The only part that was annoying was that they charge you $10 per 30 minutes to use the computer to look up information. In other places like Canada (Halifax Pier) it was free and the staff were actively available to help you with your search.
L L
Very cool place. Especially if you have ancestors who came through. Great museum
Lee Hulsizer
Such an amazing, historical place! I have been a few times now and it never disappoints! The displays are of the highest quality and the building has been renovated so nicely without removing the original decor. It is certainly a place all Americans should visit!
Agatino Zurría
It's really interesting to know a little be about the immigration history of this huge country.
Ryo Shigemitsu
Wow! Must do
Margie Martin Lehman
What an amazing place! Such a well done museum. We found some of our ancestors on the wall of immigrants! Highly recommend this experience. It is very reasonable to see both Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty! 18.00 for over 62. That price includes ferry rides. A bargain.
William Sheridan
My family and I did a quick walk through oh the Museum after our visit to Liberty Island. Definitely worth the walk.
Elaine Gleeson
Great experience. Cause your whole experience is in air conditioned bliss. Quite organized. Didn’t try the audio tour cause we didn’t like it at the Statue of Liberty.
Tammy - MMM Etienne
More interactive maybe…?, there’s a lot of culture to show…, more Disney like maybe?
Emma Ludwig
Amazing history, you can’t feel it until you’re there
Mathew Rigby
Fantastic place to visit, very informative with lots of visual displays. Well worth a visit.
Zuzanna Skoczek
Allowing to learn the hurdles of immigration to US, the place doesn't really show the pitfalls of the process and stories of those kept in the facility and denied the access.
Nevertheless visiting the building itself offers an opportunity to look at the policies, fears and hopes that shaped the current state of the country considered as centre of freedom.
Kavin Shah
Very well organized self paced tour.
You can essentially move around the island by yourself using the audio guide.
The ferry is very accessible to NY, NJ and Liberty island.
Great historical monument.
It's very big and time consuming for a single day. Might have to visit the next time for a complete tour
Sobha Venkatesh
It's nice but for kids they felt bored. For adults it's good and can get many information and history of usa.
G C
A truly memorable trip. Tons of artifacts and stories on early immigrants.
Jim Langenbach
It's so easily accessible by ferry from Liberty State Park.
There is so much history to see you should plan on being there the whole day!
Ari Johnson
One of my very favorite places. The museum is so informative and the feeling of the place is so humbling to think of how many people came through here to come to America. I've been here countless times and would go back again and again because I just love the whole feel of the place. This is a must see if you're in New York and is the perfect thing to see along with the Statue of Liberty!
Gilles Feith
The place where many of it began and a critic history of US immigration with light and dark moments
Matthew Atkins
Definitely a place to see if visiting NYC. Lots of interesting facts to take on board here, well worth the boat trip. We took advantage of the Citypass, great value for money. 👍🏻 …
Maegan Douglas
I love history but I have to admit that this museum is overwhelming. They don't give you any instruction on the best place to start, so we wandered through the second floor and read so many didactics our heads hurt. It was a bucket list experience for me but I would suggest giving yourself 3+ hours to do the entire museum, and build in a break! There is just SO much. Gift shop was okay, pretty touristy, you could skip it if you were low on time.
Dalma Pall
You should pick up your audio guide and explore the immigrant experience of the 1950's. The audio guide is easy to follow even if English is not your mother tongue and is also offered in multiple languages. Loved this place and all its stories. ❤ You can hop on a ferry back to Manhattan every 25 minutes. If you visit Ellis Island, don't miss out on the Liberty Island either.
Manos Tzatz
Very interesting tour. You get to experience the things the newcomers experienced when arriving in NY
Perrymom
Very interesting and be sure to give yourself more time here. They have pretty awesome displays.
Sarah Matthews
We reserved tickets about a month in advance and went on a Wednesday. It was busy but not crazy crowded. Great experience!
DYLAN LEVEAUX
Amazing place ! Full of history . Very well structured
NMR QTR
recommended very nice memorial and museum place
Bob Bari
Wish I had more time to spend there. Very informative and a lot to see. We spent about an hour here and it wasn't long enough. Hope to go back and finish seeing the island.
Ren Richard
A great museum everyone should to visit and learn about how difficult it was back to 100 more years ago!
Dominik Gierl
Very interesting to learn about the history of migration to the USA. Some information about recent migration is also shown
sunday oyelaja
Love this place. And the statue of liberty park.
Dann Fernandez
Great history about the immigrants to came to the states in the early 1900s loved it
Jaunel
I learned so much from the experience. Seeing the history of immigrants gave me a new perspective on life. It was a good feeling to see Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. 100% recommend.
Griselda Requena
Really well presented. It really makes you feel how immigrants felt .
RAJ SHAH
Very informative and to make it interesting now theatre is also there to make us understand the history. The benefit side is the movie is free of cost.
Jorge Castro
Beautiful place when we know the immigration history's of the United States 🇺🇸 of America. …
מישל תם
Very nice. Need an entire day to roam around.
Robert Moreno
I was seriously moved by the museum, and my family didn't even come through there. It's really an incredible piece of history. Glad they saved it and restored most to resemble its original condition. Give yourself at least an hour if you like to take your time and see everything in a museum.
Brennan McGilvray
This was a wonderful glimpse into the wild experience that immigrants went through in their trek to America. So many of us are here today thanks to the braveness of past generations. There is so much to read and think about while passing through this historic building.
Andrew B
Nice museum but a lot of things are currently closed due to covid. Your ticket to the statue of liberty typically includes Ellis island, and you should definitely go.
AC Cruz (Abelardo Cruz)
History has never been kid friendly. However at this museum they haven't tried to keep kids engage. It is beautiful and worth visiting. But there is room for improvement.
Olli Be
Really interesting historic building which shows the history of immigrants to US.
Yinzú Nairouz
Try to take the earliest departure time possible from Battery Park. Plan to spend at least half a day between the Liberty Statue and this museum (using both included audio guides). The whole ride is great, and this stop is included in your Liberty Statue ticket price. Take advantage of the free audio tour in there, it is a great place to learn and connect with story of inmigrants. For me, as an immigrant and daughter of an immigrant (from a different nation and in a different country) was a very moving experience.
Baltazar Guzman
A nice place to visit. A great piece of American history.
Vijey Mohanakrishnan
Pit stop on your return journey to mainland from statue of liberty.. Too good for those like history and too boaring for common people.. has a decent cafe and gift shop..
Jax Pax
Glad to see the history of passage of multi cultures including slavery.
Jessica Quintero
I really like ! A lot of history and good information
Jenny Beagley
Enjoyed the trip. Learnt a lot about the immigrants to the USA and what they had to go through. There's lots of exhibits to look at. Very interesting.
Omar A Richani
I love come here you understand why ny is the center of united state
Laura Stenmark
amazing place and peek into our history. 3 of my grandparents emigrated to USA through Ellis Island
Dayana Matos
Interesting museum and very beautiful
Ale Medina
Very interesting facts. Make sure first thing you do is plan your visit according to their schedule rides.
Warren Askew
Really interesting history and well presented. Worth the time to visit and prepare to stay a while.
Suenia Villagerardo
Hiking trail and workout but somewhat dangerous…cows are roaming around in herds without any fencing and saw a coyote in broad daylight moving around nearby watching us. Cell reception is awful there too. Maybe bring a taser or some protection. I wouldn’t recommend this for families or children.
Emma McDaniel
Make sure you do the hard hat tour!!! Amazing!!
Jim Pitre
The park itself deserves 5 stars. The cafe, however, doesn't. The way they were running it that day seemed to be geared more towards small crowds. There were only two people taking orders and it took a while to get our food. They would take an order then the customer had to wait there at the counter until the food was brought out.
Needless to say, this caused the line to be unnecessarily long. We got there early and were able to get our food after a long wait. I felt bad for the people way back at the end of that line. They were still there when we left.
Charlie Shaw
I can't believe I've never been here before. Tour guide said you only needed 30 minutes , wow he was so wring, you ca easily loose a say in here so much history so many things to read and do plus a well sticked cafe . Sohn off half a day here I reckon
Jibran Kahn
At least spare 3-4 hours to see everything. It’s really worth it.
Tamara Rath
Historical and educational. Accessible by ferry.
usa events
No much to see but if you enjoy history this is the place
Ian Rowson Holland
Great history and we'll worth seeing.
Genesis Cabrera
This place is huge! Highly recommend to use comfortable footwear and arrive early due to the amount of information available. Night tide makes the last ferris rock more so be careful while getting on and off. 10/10 recommend. Will go again very soon.
Armando M Gonzalez
Definitely worth a vist. Watch the short movie when you enter so that you know the history of the Ellis Island. We did both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on the same trip.
JC Holcomb
If medical history interests you take the hard hat tour.
Erik
Very nice, especially the chicken Sandwich was very good and cheep.
Derrick Nalley
Great fun on the tour/vacation trip with the family!
Theresa TORRES
Loved it! So interesting, so many pictures of NY in old days. I suggest spending whole day here. Definitely going back 😊
Tyler Carlson
Very eye opening perspective that does a great job of showing you what immigrants went through. Expect to pay $10 for the privilege of looking up any relatives that may have been processed through the island. Thought that was kind of tacky but remembered it’s essentially a donation to upkeep the museum and I got over it
Meliza Hernandez
This museum was absolute favorite of my entire Washington DC trip. This museum was very sensitive to the immigrants fight and struggle to come to this country.
Buki Omotosho
An embodiment of historical memories of immigration/immigrants to the US. Very detailed in the upper levels of the building. Brings one as close as possible to that time period, mentally.
Maddi Ortega
Cool place if you like history! The ferry ride there offers some beautiful views. Pretty cool that you have an option to catch the ferry from the NY or NJ side. And can park on the New Jersey side for a reasonable price if you have a car.
Chase Will PoWer
This is a cool museum and part of the liberty island ticket. It meshes the symbol of the statue with the real life situation of migration process in the early 1500-1900s
Arash Amini
It was a small interesting museum. Compare to other museum it wasn't engaging enough.
Jayesh Merchant
12 million immigrants ...... arrived America and got Freedom and Liberty.
Sunny Singh
Great piece of US history. Loved the audio phones for the tour (many languages available). Food court people are a little rude.
Everyone is very helpful and highly knowledgeable.
Amanda C
Enjoyed it. However if you are planning on taking the last Ferry back be prepared to be rushed out by security and yelled at 30 minutes before they close and the ferry gets to the island. On the way out a friend tried to use the restroom, and was screamed at that everything is closed we must wait outside for the ferry that didn’t arrive for 30 minutes. Enjoyed most of my trip but this was ridiculous, if we had known we would have caught the previous Ferry, why even have the last one available?
Timothy Amerling
[It is the second stop on your ferry ride ticket to the Statue of Liberty] A very cool place to visit for the historical nature of it with a LOT of information to read about. But it is almost too much information, and gets old after a while of walking through it. They need to make use of more diverse ways of telling the information
El Barto
Parfait
Simcha Fisch
Really amazing to visit this historic place. So much to see. Really well made exhibits.
Michael Carter
Amazing amount of history traveled through this island and glad to experience this!
Sonia tsaka
Great history on migration into USA
emil toth
This museum is fascinating for everyone, both kids and adults will find something. The museum is divided into more sections, each one is very interesting and offers view into the history of immigration to the US, modern immigration and others. The pictures and artifacts are just WOW.
Thomas Sheckells
Never having given a thought to migrate to some other country, looking through the history of Ellis Island makes me really feel for the people who gave up everything in their homeland, paid a lot of money, travelled for weeks across the ocean, and then went through the process on arrival at the Island. The examinations, the questions in a language that was barely or not at all understood, all with the hope of coming out the other side to a better life for your family. More power to the people that undertook it all and made it to a better life here in The New World.
Kenneth Murphy
We enjoyed our experience and the history of learning how our ancestors possibly came to the United States. A lot of photos, documentation and some exhibits detailing how things may have been for immigration years ago. The history of The Statue of Liberty is also interesting.
Behzad Taimur
Most people know about the nearby Statue of Liberty and run after it. However, lesser know is this totally great museum dedicated to the immigrants who came to the United States and made it what it is today. You can take the same ferry that you would to go to Liberty Island and get here. Once here you can explore the history of the united states of america and be fascinated by everything there is to learn. It's a well curated and well organized museum. There's guided tours, including audio tours, and you can just explore on your own too. But in either case, you will find alot to do and alot to learn by going here.
Gianluca Savaia
Do not miss it when you visit the statue of liberty! It is very interesting to learn the history of immigration in the US and how the huge flow of immigrants was managed back then.
Nikki Piechota
Love this experience! The museum and art work was incredible.
Alimayu Hackshaw
My girlfriend and I absolutely enjoyed ourselves on Ellis island, Ellis island was a wealth of education and history. And if you have an opportunity to take one of the tours please take a tour very helpful. Its a very enjoyable experience.
Asmita Mukherjee
Goose Bumping experience, something to never miss if you're in NYC
Rodd Riesenberger
It was interesting to see and feel the history on the island. A little disappointed that the documentary movies only ran every hour and one of the theaters were closed.
Heather Moffett
Wonderful and extremely educational to the fact of the older immigrants! Never been to much into my family past and genealogy but this place made me want to know more about where I came from..at least a 2 hour visit..maybe longer if ya have the time...take the time!!!!
Andrea Howard
Beautiful place. Nice and clean. Offers a recorded tour. Can get crowded and wish it offered ceowd control but oh well.
João Monteiro
After the Statue of Liberty, this should be your next visit to understand the history of New York City and the United States of America!
J C
Sacred experience. Somber and holy, the landing point if the American experience. Unlike many monuments there is little jingoism or nationalism and it's a mostly honest showing of who/what we are and how we got here. Be prepared for a full day.
Venkat N Reddy Gurrala
You will experience real migration details here
Shanon Samora
Went there in 2019, incredible museum.
Eduardo Moreira
Nice, but not for young people
Hrvoje Salapic
Full of historical stories
Definitely recommend
henry tennant
Souch history in this building. When I walked I felt that I went back in time to a time that was tough for all, where new people we granted access to the nation. It also feels like stepping and admiring what these immigrants had deal with coming from new place just to come and maybe live here for the rest of there lives or turned away.
Joren Kuijper
Beautiful museum albeit outdated in some areas, it could use some work especially mixing up the items with the text. Some areas felt like reading a book instead of visiting a museum
Luis Ceron
Great place to experience History first hand
