Incredible, huge, three-story, free art museum with ongoing exhibits as well as various rotating and traveling special exhibits that have a fee (however, those exhibits usually offer free days as well). I have spent many hours over many days over many years and yet I STILL haven't seen everything even in the ongoing exhibits. You should make a reservation for tickets for special events but usually you can walk-in and still get a ticket, even for those. They have a fun, free Family Day event the second weekend of every month with fun activities and a take-home tote. You can also get a free or paid membership (different levels have different benefits). Definitely donate if you can as well, to help support the museum. There is a gift shop as well as a couple restaurants on site. They offer a free coat check and self-service lockers, which is great for winter when you don't want to lug your coat around. The museum is located on the bus route and there is free on-street and some paid parking lots available. Sometimes they offer free shuttles as well. The museum is accessible with ramps and elevators and offer free wheelchairs for use (which was so helpful when I was there while on crutches). We love the fun, family-friendly Rock the Cradle event they host with the Children's Theatre Company in March and the beautiful Art in Bloom event in the spring.

Absolutely insanely amazing... Literally filled with wonders. The Mia is huge and has an INCREDIBLE amount of wonderful art. I was there 3 hours and didn't even get through one floor. I think I spent two hours just in the Asia exhibits and I didn't even see everything in there. Time flies by when there's so much to get immersed in. I think it would take me days to truly appreciate all of the art. If you like to sketch, definitely bring your materials! I had a blast :D And Mia is completely free!!! (Although everyone should make a donation to this wonderful place). I would put this at the top of the to-do list when in the Twin Cities. Hopefully I'm back in Minneapolis soon so I can designate a few full days to the Mia:) The facilities were very clean and there is plenty of room to social distance even with a good amount of people visiting (I was there on a Wednesday 11am-2pm). Lovely staff as well and they do have a self-service coat check with lockers. As of 4/27/22, masks are optional although many guests still masking when I was there:) Very accessible by bus too!

This completely FREE museum offers so much for the visitors to see and learn that one visit is simply not enough! I visited for the first time today on a Wednesday, and I loved every minute of my visit. I spent most of my time perusing arts from Europe and America between 1600s to modern times on the third floor. I saw one painting from Monet's later years and it was interesting to see the transformation of his artistic style. The second floor displays artifacts, paintings and other artworks from various parts of the world. A cafe and a gift shop can be found on the main floor. I will for sure return!

It was my first time. I was very impressed. Very very very large building. Three Floors. I was there 3 hours and I didn't even see everything. They have one or two sections where it cost money to get in but those are like for specialty exhibits like Van Gogh and they had some Japanese textiles thing that was like 20 bucks to get in. They have a coffee shop and a gift store on the first floor. All the art was really interesting. I highly recommend reading the plaques, some really funny stuff. I should have taken more photos. I can't wait to go back. In the African art section on the first floor, if you read the plaques it's almost comical they tell stories of how they have no idea where the art came from or who made it and it was donated by some white guy. I think an effort should be made to return some of that stuff, especially stuff within the last century.for example there was several spiritual artifacts that were so sacred they should be returned. They have a really great Mediterranean section as well, one thing was an urn. That should be returned and put in an intentional resting place that isn't to be gawked at by tourists.

I went to a special exhibit here. As I understand that if you want to just see the regular collection there is no cost. The building is beautiful the art is beautiful and it is quite. Staff members are friendly and helpful. This is well worth a visit

Amazing Museum. Love the interactive rooms and the variety of art pieces from around the world. They’re amazing about Covid-19 precautions and so be sure to bring your vaccination card or proof of vaccination and be kind to those who are working their asking for them. Food/Cafe is up and running there. Staff that work there were amazing and helpful. And IT IS OPEN UNTIL 9PM. Can we all just appreciate that? 9 PM!! Good job MIA.

What a gem in the heart of Minneapolis. This art institute is great for families. There is plenty of room and art for everyone. They even display local children’s artwork. They offer a family center just for kids and a cafe with goodies! Plus, it’s FREE!! Check our calendar for kids events.

What I love about this free museum is it never seems busy, just because there is so much to explore and people spread out. There's so much more there than just typical paintings on the wall. You have Period Rooms start up to immerse you into the culture and settings that created those pieces. There is furniture and important functional and artistic designs to lamps and kitchen gadgets even.The arrangement by region is wonderful and let's you step through worlds. Definitely a spot to both come with others or alone.

Exhibitions were very large and elegant, the museum is quite big yet extremely well kept. Loved the detailed rooms created to reflect them. Happy I was able to see it all in about 3 hours.

Here is a little cultural gem tucked into the heart of Minneapolis. It's filled with wonder and delight. Yes, there is often times a special exhibit that will cost you a small fee - otherwise, enjoy the rest for free. We have never had issues finding street parking close by. Chuck full of amazing art, in all forms. One of my favorite areas is the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit. I also love gazing out the upper story window at the downtown skyline with the description of all the buildings right there. Keep it simple. Bring the kids and gather some culture.

An excellent collection of art ranging across multiple styles, mediums and time periods. You might be surprised to find more historic artifacts here than one might expect. Exhibits rotate frequently enough to make return trips worth while multiple times a year.

Outstanding. And it's free! Gallery upon gallery of world class art. Really enjoyed the immersive exhibits of household rooms, especially the one in which the light and sounds change to give a sense of daily life. The special exhibit on Japanese cloth and clothing was magnificent, and well worth the very small ticket price of 10 CAD.

A wonder art museum—certainly the best in Minnesota. The layout can be a bit confusing, but there’s something fun and exciting about going from a room full of impressionist masterpieces to one with anarchist comic strips. There’s a lovely little cafe and store. I strongly recommend setting aside an entire day to explore this museum.

Wonderfully curated exhibit of Japanese textiles. Appreciated the accompanying text, which gave helpful context and interesting background about the range of materials used and the skills of the individuals and communities that made them. Enjoyed learning how a paper raincoat could be made waterproof and that cloth can be made from the invasive Kudzu vine (and that Kudzu is also known as arrowroot--mind blown!).

Muy orgulloso. Very proud of this art museum. Just visited the Van Gogh exhibit. Incredible about of art to see. Photos are okay but if course no flash. There is free parking on the street. Work visiting multiple times. If coming from out of state or country it is a world class museum. The exhibits to change constantly. Good to relax and enjoy the art. Great variety. Great staff. Wonderful asset in the great city of Minneapolis.

My first visit was great! Went for the Japanese textile exhibit which was presented beautifully, loved learning about the more northern Japan culture cause a lot of what we normally get is southeast/southwest. Really loved being able to see my first Yayoi piece in person and grateful that they had a beautiful Kehinde Wiley piece-now my third that I've gotten the chance to witness with my own eyes. The space is huuuuge and really you need more than a day to be able to enjoy everything. Unlike many other museums, a lot of their pieces are out in the open (don't touch!!) Vs in a case which allows you to feel closer to the art and culture behind it. I believe many of these pieces, just like others across the country, should be returned to their homelands but since they're not going to be..I'm just grateful to experience them. I've included some photos of the paid textile exhibit because I believe we should all be able to experience art regardless of the ability to pay. Wish I'd taken more.

MIA is my favorite art museum in the Twin Cities area. Not only is it free, it has beautiful Asian, African, American, and European art. They also have different exhibits you can pay to see which change frequently. The current one is Van Gogh and while it is small, it is lovely! I also recently discovered MIA has a family room (for families with young kids) which I had never seen before. It was much appreciated when our 16 month old decided he was done with the museum itself (see pics).

Another must see in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Institue Of Art is referred to as Mia, from the three-letter abbreviation of its name. Admission is free. The collection has more than 80,000 works of art with a history of 5,000 years. Highlights of the permanent collection include European masters by Rembrandt, Poussin and Van Gogh; modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Stella and close; Mia has three floors, classified by region, from Asia, Africa, Europe to the United States. The types of exhibits include sculptures, oil paintings, cultural relics, photos, real-life exhibitions, etc. Among them, the exhibits in China and Japan are very rich. It is the leader in the overseas collection of ancient Chinese bronzes, and many bronzes and pottery are rare in domestic museums.

I still am amazed that a museum of this quality is free to the public. So many amazing artists from all different backgrounds and time periods have pieces here. You could honestly spend hours here, as it's honestly huge. Just a stellar art museum all around. Seriously. Go check it out.

We came an hour before it closed and it was such a regret because I would have spent the whole afternoon here. You could really see how well thought out the displays are, and I loved the mini rooms they have. It felt like we were in a maze though and had to do a lot of back and forth because we aren’t sure if we missed something already or not. I wished there was more of a path but it was more so because we didn’t have much time to roam around. When we come back to MPLS we should make a proper visit. Thanks a lot.

MIA is my favorite place to go in Minneapolis. The Asian collection is unforgettable, and the recent exhibition on Van Gogh's Olive Tree is worth buying a ticket to enjoy. I spent more than 30 hours in it, which is rich in ancient Chinese collections, mummies, sculptures by Rodin, paintings by Monet, and more.

Went to see the Botticelli exhibit and it was supremely inspiring. Very well curated. Lovingly put together. The only problem was that it was so crowded that it was hard to move around or get good views. And it was tough to really engage with the pieces because you were constantly contending for a view and feeling like you need to be swift. But that's no fault of the MIA. That's just the kind of crowds they pull in. Even with the crowd it was an amazing experience to be able to have here in my own city.

Always fun to get lost inside the MIA! Masks optional. On a busy Sunday had to pay for parking but the museum was free. On weekdays it’s much easier to get street parking. My daughter enjoyed leading us around. Nice gift shop, coffee shop, & we didn’t go in the restaurant but that looks nice too.

MIA is an absolute gem of a museum, with a very strong collection for its size, particularly of East Asian and Indigenous artworks. There is convenient paid parking, and also often unpaid street parking in the neighborhood. Admission is free, but it's best practice to contribute a few bucks to the donation box near the main entrance when you can. Supporters can also opt for one of the reasonably priced memberships, which include perks like free tickets to special exhibitions.

2023 update: Definitely with a visit. No entry fee, just a recommended donation. They also host international-level exhibits (which usually require paid reservations.) While you're in the area, the Hennepin County Museum is a block away and has great local history.

It felt like I was in a bizarre horror film. The monsters in form were actually two groups of knowledgeable art connoisseurs/Etsy sellers who followed us from room to room, boisterously debating the art and whether Priscila is still painting pieces for Etsy or focusing more on her grades. It was a good trip to MIA but Halloween is over. Don't miss the displays of Native American artifacts and Teo Nguyen’s solo museum exhibition I think it's called "the politics of worthiness" some very moving pieces. It can be a sad way to end the day at MIA. So if you can't bear the weight I suggest going back through the Uffizi exhibit. Perhaps the monsters are gone by now.

This is a congratulatory gift to the emperor of China about 400 years ago. It engraved a famous event in Chinese history. The emperor was very happy and wrote the text himself and engraved it on the jade. Suppose this jade is 80 kilograms, this kind of jade is called Hetian jade, and it is about 2800 dollars per gram. Therefore, this piece of jade is worth $244 million just for the material. Could you count how many figures are carved here?

Went to see the Botticelli and Renaissance exhibit and was pleased to also see the Albrecht Dürer/1400 century German printmakers displayed. Other highlights included the goldsmithing cloister of metalworks, Thomas Moran painting of Tohickon Creek, and the Veiled Lady, which was enchanting in person. There was a little of everything you could ask for if you spent the time navigating. I want to highlight Teo Nguyen's reflection on Vietnam and how the landscape and people there were impacted by and are recovering from the war. His paintings have wonderfully visible brush strokes and yet are so photorealistic, showing the country at peace and celebrating the idyllic countryside. Even the titles of his paintings were poetry in themselves. His short film, dedicated to his mother, made me cry, and the exhibit as a whole made me really want to visit Vietnam. His solo exhibit is at the MIA until June 18, 2023, definitely check it out if you're visiting before then.

Botticelli and the Renaissance - an exhibit par excellence. The moment you enter the hall, you shall be translocated to the era of High Art: 15th century Florence– huge city maps, notes on the patrons of mediaeval Italy, ancient Roman sculptures including those of Venus, angels, centaurs and more. If you are an art enthusiast, you can spend 2-3 hours at ease, marvelling at the masterpieces. Growing up reading of Botticelli, personally I am deeply contented from having been able to witness his art, and especially the Adoration of the Magi from so close. (Fact: this painting is presumably the only piece of art that features his self-portrait.) Exhibition lasts till January 8. Definitely recommend!!

MIA is always a pleasant visit. Convenient location and free entry make it one of the better deals in the cities. The Myron Kunin collection is a must see during the visit. Spacious and regularly changing galleries mean you always stumble on something new.

I love all art museums, and have been to many of the great collections in both Europe and the US. The MIA has a large comprehensive collection, but I personally did not agree with the organization of the oil paintings, and a number of paintings had no placards next to them (which is very unusual). This review is nothing more than my opinion. I was thrilled to see they had a Vasari and Titian, and I liked the way they had their drawings by Canaletto and Tiepolo displayed.

During my travels for work, I try and visit the art museums of whatever city I am in. The MIA is the best art museum I've visited in the country, by far. Not sure if the locals realize what they have here. It's incredible. I've seen a lot of museums. Nothing quite like this.

This place is huge. If you truly want to take it all in come early and don’t be in a rush for it. There’s tons of history and culture in this building. If you are a history buff you will absolutely adore this place. Best part of it all it’s free!

This place is so cool! When I walked in the first thing I noticed was how massive this place was. So many interesting exhibits. I could get lost in here for days and still not cover everything. Went for some special exhibits. They are very reasonably priced and the membership benefits are fantastic. The customer service here is also excellent. I emailed about upgrading my membership and they responded almost instantly with directions for doing so over phone call. A 5 minute call later, I got what I wanted and was on my way. They have a great collection and would highly recommend people to get a membership here.

The premiere art museum in the twin cities with a collection deserving of the artistic culture of the area. The collection is very large, I've been here several times and there is plenty more to see. The Asian art collection is excellent. They have a good impressionism section including a great van gogh. There are also some other great paintings like a Poussin and a Rembrandt. Admission is free (except special exhibits) and there is plenty of parking.

One of the best art museums in Minneapolis. It's massive collection means there's definitely bound to be something for everyone. I personally like the recreated rooms. Though don't come here thinking you'll necessarily be able to see everything in one visit, especially If you're one to read the info cards. Which at this museum you should, as they give a lot of great context and information about the art and objects you're looking at. They also have regularly rotating temporary collections and exhibits which keep things fresh for regular visitors. And at the low price of free it's hard not to love this great museum. There is surrounding street parking, though that can be hit or miss for finding a spot. The more reliable option is the paid parking lot for the museum which is pretty reasonably priced.

What a pleasant surprise! This is a huge museum, with all sorts of exhibits and great explanatory captions. And it's free! You could spend days here. They have the requisite Chihuly glass sculpture suspended at the entrance, and a Chinese doorway, and an old Tatra automobile, plus native art from many cultures, and the standard museum paintings and sculptures. Don't miss it.

If you're looking for a non-crowded, very socially distant, and 100% mask compliant place to get out of the house I can't recommend the MIA enough. Free self-serve coat check. Super friendly and distant staff. Even when sold out it's practically empty. Warm. Peaceful. Exactly what my family needed. Our toddler loves it there Update 2/13/22 Family Day is back! Thank you MIA for bring back something for little ones! Also, the security/roaming staff are top notch. I don't know how they recruit or train, but they are all just wonderful people.

This museum is always a great option. I’ve visited many times and am always impressed with the exhibitions. The gift shop and cafe are nice touches too, to grab a quick bite to eat or buy a gift. I went to a few children theatre shows and they were spectacular. They also have a child art play area.

Great place to find beauty. Honestly feels like a big time museum, which is not the case at most museums in state. The halls and some staircases are on par with the classic works of art. One of my favorite places to visit in Minneapolis as I could spend hours exploring and looking at art. They have many exhibits that tour here and do cost money and some sell out fast, but most of museum is free to public, but they do take donations.

Its permanent collection includes world-famous works that embody the highest levels of artistic achievement, spanning about 20,000 years and representing the world’s diverse cultures across six continents. The museum has seven curatorial areas: Arts of Africa & the Americas; Contemporary Art; Decorative Arts, Textiles & Sculpture; Asian Arts. The nice thing is that it's free to admit.

MIA free day is a fantastic opportunity to experience the museum's collection without any admission fee. The exhibits were engaging and informative. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, a great way to spend a day with family and friends. 5/5 stars!

I have been to MIA several times, most recently for the Botticelli exhibit and it was a testatment to the strong leadership of this organization. The fact that we could get Uffizi artifacts and we could see authentic Botticelli art in our own backyard was incredible. I still think about it.

Viewing the special exhibition of Botticelli was worth the hassle of finding parking and being in crowded galleries. The MIA has many galleries of great art to view for free. However, try to schedule your visit before the last few days of something as special as this.

The art was amazing but the crowd management was not great. Of course we went on a Sunday afternoon so it's our own fault, but we paid 20 per ticket with a very specific time slot. People were simply not leaving the exhibit and it was so tightly crowded when they packed us in, we only managed to see half the pieces.

I can spend hours there, bring your kids as well, expose them to art, there's a scavenger hunt for them to find certain fun details in art pieces, and there's a bunch of kid activities every second Sunday of the month. Plus it's free! Except for any special exhibits. I also recommend donating-- if you have the spare dollar--to support this Minnesota gem.

The MIA is the best place to go look at art for free. Their vast collection can satisfy many different types of art enthusiasts, and the building itself is a work of art. It's well laded out and the map is easy to follow. I great place to get out and do something interesting on bad weather days. Their special exabits are not free, but they're often reasonably priced, and if that's not your style, the whole rest of the museum is open to the public for free.

A wonderful & beautiful museum. One of my favorite museums, actually! It was so beautiful to go here for 2-3 hours. It was absolutely glorious inside. Even though I was only on the third floor, there's still such an insane amount of work to see! You could literally spend the whole day here and still see/find things that you didn't notice before. Beware that it's very easy to get lost here - the place is like a huge maze, so if you bring kids, make sure you all stick together or that they at least stick close by!

We had a wonderful opportunity to visit the special exhibit from Italy of the paintings of Botticelli on black Friday. The MIA opened it to the public for free from 8-10am. They also had free coffee and pastries. It was a wonderful exhibit and so fun to be able to see these master pieces. The MIA is always such a fantastic gem of the twin cities.

It was a nice museum but a lot of silver and Asian art that I’m not interested in. I did find the paintings very nice. I don’t know if I would come here if it was far like I did but if you’re close by or it’s not too long of a distance I would say it’s a nice museum. It did have three exhibits that cost extra and I kind of don’t like that. The parking was a little expensive but I was able to find offstreet parking because I got there early. It was clean and everyone was friendly.

Beautiful art museum with such variety! Wandered around for hours and still didn't see everything. They have art from every continent and every century. Special exhibit is Botticelli currently, but they rotate fairly frequently. Ate at the cafeteria as well where they have pre-made sandwiches and salads as well as coffee and other drinks. I enjoyed the veggie sandwich and a hot chocolate on a snowy day. Also has a cute gift shop stocked by artists. Definitely will be back!

Biggest problem you'll have is finding a bathroom (that's not the main one on the first floor). Other than that, this place is an exquisite serene respite from the everyday where you can feed your soul with art and ideas from around the world. Plan for at least 3 hours, there's two full floors of art and it's a maze to wander and dive into. Don't forget to stop at the gift shop to see what goodies they have in stock.

I've been going to the Minneapolis Institute of Art for fifty four years. I recently visited for the Botticelli exhibit. This place is a gem. This museum ranks with other large cities and probably is one of the best. Even if you don't go to a paid exhibit you could spend an entire week here and not get bored. Period rooms, contemporary art, good Islamic and asian sections plus early American and everything else you could think of. I am proud to have this neo classic building gracing my city. Go.

My daughter and I came her to view the art and spend time together just her and I. I am in construction and have been working a ton and this was such a lovely visit for her and I to just take in all the beauty and history and being as it is currently appointment only it was peaceful and quiet. It was not over crowded and we did not have to be shoulder to shoulder with others. This place is amazing and my 11 year old daughter and I love to visit. If you have never been before, don't miss out on the Minneapolis Downtown Skyline views from the second floor. This was my daughter's father's favorite place in the whole museum and her and I sat for a bit thinking of him and taking in the view. There is art from many periods and all styles and our favorite is all of the Asian art. It's a museum. It's beautiful. The architecture alone is very impressive. If you appreciate this sort of thing you cannot bypass the MIA.

My favorite MN museum by far, a very eclectic but high quality collection of art. Don't miss the Impressionism room with a Monet "haystack", one of Van Goghs olive Grove" paintings, a fantastic collection of John Singer Sargent works from the JJ hill estate, obligatory Gaugan, Manet, Corot, Pissarro, Seurat and Signac. It's free aside from special exhibitions which I find to be excellent usually.

Great experience! I loved that admission was free and that it was open late on a Friday. I was visiting the area for the weekend and wanted to cram my day with activities. The fact that it was open late allowed me the opportunity to visit. Very large place, I couldn't see everything. The art work here is quality. There is a pay lot for parking, however I was not charged upon leaving the lot which was a nice surprise.

Not only had interesting art pieces, but replica or original compete rooms, including and actual part of a Frank Lloyd Wright house! They had period rooms, such as a room in a French castle and other rooms. The Asian section also has several facinating rooms. I would highly recommend! MIA is one of my FAVORITE places to go in Minneapolis. I go there so much, I'm now a "free/donor member" and will be upgrading to a better membership eventually. They have both permanent exhibits/galleries and a couple galleries that are always changing...so it keeps going there so often fresh and fun. They have an amazing gift shop and cafe as well. The staff is very kind, professional, and knowledgeable. MIA never let's me down and I always leave there more calm and happy than I felt when I arrived. MIA is great for groups of children, kid's school trips, family visits, art students, solo visits, and even dates. Admission is free/donation based. Parking can be hard to find on the weekends, but during the week it's usually less busy and easier to find street parking. They also have a parking ramp and a parking lot that you can pay for, if that's more convenient. I highly suggest checking this place out if you get the opportunity!

Want to see Frank Lloyd Wright furniture, an original Remington sculpture, or ancient Chinese artifacts, then come to this FREE museum. I went there with my 8 year old son in order to take up an hour before a play started at the Children’s Theater. First of all this museum is free to enter so it is a great destination for anyone and everyone. Secondly, after an hour, we still hadn’t seen everything and my son was exploring all the rooms and the hallways of art. Thirdly, the artwork on display is beautiful. 2nd floor is Asian (Japanese and Chinese) while the third floor is European and American artwork. The art consists of sculpture, paintings, textiles and even Frank Lloyd Wright furniture. We are definitely coming back. Street parking is available but difficult to find (we got lucky) but there is also a parking ramp to the south side of the museum on the property. Donations are appreciated to the museum.

Come enjoy not only the beautiful artwork of centuries past and years present, but also the exciting art goods in the gift shop and the grand building all these treasures are in! We had an easy, relaxed visit to the museum today. We have experienced many different types of visits. All of them excellent. Special exhibition visits, Art In Bloom visits, educational visits... you get the idea. Today we renewed our membership and went to see the special exhibit Hearts of Our People Native Women Artists. It was great. We took time to really absorb the collection. Much of the exhibit gives us a look at the intricate and colorful designs of clothing and utilitarian objects. There are some thinking statement pieces. I especially liked a three dimensional piece that used passenger pidgeons for it's message. If you haven't already taken in this exhibit I would highly recommend it.

So many surprising finds from all over the world at this museum that are amazing! The MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Art) is truly a treasure trove of original artifacts, relics, sculpture and paintings you will enjoy. The museum is huge and you can spend a good 4 hours in there seeing and reading about the history behind the artists and their specific works! Monet, Degas, LaTrec, Luce, Picasso! Who knew they had all this??? They even have a playroom for the younger kids to go to (supervision required). They also have a beautiful restaurant inside but sadly it was closed the day I went. Consolation was they also had a cafe with lite bites and barista drinks! Icing on the cake was that this museum is FREE!!! Definite must see place!

So let me tell you what! This place is definitely a place you have to visit if you're in the area. My husband and I made a mistake by starting on the first floor. The amazing paintings and sculptures are mostly on the top. We went an hour before closing and had to rush at the end to be able to see everything. Beautiful place they have there.

Came for the new Egypt exhibit but stayed for the amazing variety of regular exhibits. Admission is free for the regular ones but you do need to buy tickets for the special exhibit, which are $20/ticket in my experience unless you are a member. Pro-tip - Membership is also free, and gives you a discount on special exhibits and at the coffee shop inside.

One of my favorite place to visit! A wide variety of art pieces from a wide range of places and periods in the world! There is no admission fee so it's an ideal place to visit. The only problem is finding parking, the majority of which nearby is either limited to a few hours or requires payment. Overall M.I.A. is a must-visit for anyone in the Twin Cities. It's my go-to for dates, friends and family visiting from out of town, or even just for a relaxed day out. I highly recommend going here!

A day very well spent in the MIA. Loved the collection of impressionist and medieval European painting. Egypt was fascinating. Exhibits from South Asia, including China, India and far South-East were notable, well-organized and attracted young and old at the same time in our group. The gift shop was somewhat disappointing. I expected more souvenirs based on the decent art collection MIA has in their galleries; rather the shop was more of a Minneapolis general gift shop. Overall, good 4 hours spent on a winter day.

Amazing attraction and a must see for art lovers in the Minneapolis area. Truly expansive location filled to the brim with artworks for every corner of the world and different time periods. Its a great learning experience with a great selection of art from paintings to sculptures, furniture, and more. MIA's got it all: Amazing collection, beautifully displayed; donations-only admission; free parking if you're lucky (check out the perimeter of the park nearby); long hours on Friday; extraordinarily patient docents. TIPS: - Ask for the "Highlights" brochure (in addition to the standard museum plan) but have the docent mark what's on loan or relocated. -The audio guide doesn't work well but it's better than the app tour you can download, which doesn't work at all. -Don't try to make sense of the floor plan on 3rd floor. Just keep track of where you've been so you don't miss anything. -Try to arrive by eleven thirty a.m. for the docent talk, or call ahead for the schedule. -Go on Friday when they're open till 9. -Allow more time than you'd imagine. This is one of the world's largest collections and the quality is a astonishing.

One it has great staff; two, its completely free. Thanks to its benefactors a museum of this scale is free for public. Now about the museum - This museum has an unmatched collection of artifacts ranging from centuries back. It also has artifacts from different civilizations, Full room settings of few Chinese dynasties which is pretty impressive. It is also home of few of rare pieces like veiled lady (though I couldn't see it as it was loaned to some other museum at that time) Usually one visit might not be enough if you are seriously into history. This place is HUGE. Took me two days to get over it. Bit unrelated, but the park right opposite to it once used to have residence of William D Washburn, founder of Washburn mills ie the current Mill city museum and the company General mills.

I went here with my partner and had a great time looking at all the different exhibits. There was easily 4 hours worth of rooms and art to see. I liked how this institute created some rooms that were representative of a time period or a group's historical living environment. I haven't seen this way of presenting art as frequently at other art institutes. The parking garage cost was reasonable and most exhibits were free to see! They also have a cafe with coffee and snacks onsite. I was impressed with my experience and would go back again in the future when I'm in Minneapolis.

Highly recommend visiting this museum. The lighting, acoustics, and presentation is first rate, changing quarterly. Unless you view the special visiting collection, the cost is free and donations voluntary. Most attendees are respectful and keep their voices down. I think the museum is geared more towards adults than children, but children are welcome.

I love this museum! MIA has a vast and varied collection and often snags the best traveling exhibits to hit the U.S. We went to the new Sunken Egypt exhibit the other night which is only showing in two cities in the country. That shows how highly thought of this institute is. They rotate their collections often and after 42 years I still haven't seen everything. Even if you are only in town for a couple days, put this at the top of your Must See list.

Wonderful museum! We spent several hours here but barely scratched the surface in terms of seeing all the collections. I would definitely return to see more. I especially enjoyed the Asian art and Indigenous American art galleries. Very enriching and inspiring! Even the building is lovely with cool design features and plenty of natural light. As a bonus, the museum is free with a donation suggested. They have a good coffee shop for when you need to take a break. :)

One of the best musuem I have visited since. The MIA has a large variety of arts, from ancient civilization (African Asian American) to modern art. The Asian section is Rich with wonderful statues of Buddha and Ganesh. The modern section has lot of french impressionist (Monet Manet Pissarro Degas Derin Rodin) and Dutch artists (van Gogh). I went there to see American artists and I wasn't disappointed, the Kunin collection room is filled with many paintings of american artists. It is a must to do in Minneapolis and it s free !

The MIA is doing an excellent job with outreach in the Native community. I was so moved by their current Exhibition, "Hearts of Our People". It's been long due to have such an amazing showcase of both historic and contemporary native women artists, contextualized on their own terms. More of this please! I am also a huge fan of the "Art in Bloom" event that happens annually. Beautiful flower arrangements, paired with beautiful works of art. Fantastic! The Children's Theater does great shows- but my complaint is that they don't do a good job with outreach into the lower income community. Ticket prices are high, and that limits access to the arts by those who need it most. I'm very happy as an artist with the ability to walk into the MIA and see pivotal, historic works for free! Art is for EVERYONE.

This place will impress everyone. If you visit in early May you can see the "in bloom" program that the museum sets every year. It is a sensory experience that everyone will love. My favorite museum in America. I've been to the Smithsonians, and I honestly still prefer the MIA. My favorite parts are the period rooms on the third floor (real rooms from different periods of history that you can step into), the Japanese collection on the second floor (which includes with a tea house and set of samurai armor), the Indigenous art collection on the second floor, the big African art room on the second floor, the World of Judea atrium on the third floor, and real mummy somewhere in the archives of the museum.

They own the Purcell-Cutts house by Lake of the Isles. It's a Prairie style architecture built in 1914. It's similar to a Frank Lloyd Wright house. It still has the same furniture that was built for it. Beautiful windows. Tours leave from MIA in a nice shuttle bus. Cost is free for members, and otherwise $5. Right now they have a Winterlights tour.

Second time I've visited the MIA, and I enjoyed it even more this time. It is absolutely worth setting aside about 3 or 4 hours to spend here. It will give you an appropriate amount of time to appreciate the exhibits. They are exhaustively thorough! I love it.

This museum is gem; has something for everyone. There are rooms with European, American, Asian, African, Native American and Modern art. Recently I visited their special exhibit of artifacts from 'Egypt's Sunken Cities'. Phenomenal collection of jewelry, statues, boats, ceremonial pieces with historical explanations and videos.

Mia is a world class museum with excellent collections in several areas from Renaissance paintings to jade to ethnic art to special exhibits on a variety of topics. Mia is open every day except Monday and is open till 9:00 on Thursday and Friday. Admission is free to all. Although there is generally a charge for the special exhibits. Unless coming specifically to see the special exhibit a visitor can spend two to three hours just checking out the rest of the museum. I strongly suggest not trying to see it all in one day. There is on street parking that is limited to two hours and is enforced. Park in one of the pay lots or the ramp. For events such as Art in Bloom, the annual flower and art show, parking can be a challenge, allow for extra time or plan to take a bus.

There's so much to see. Plan on focusing on just a few exhibits to enjoy, taking your time to take in the works of art from different angles - sitting down on the bench in the middle of the room, up close to the work of art, observe standing in various parts of the room... Whether you're looking at paintings, carvings, sculpture, textiles, photographs, etc, they all deserve your undivided attention. Plan on coming back, time and time again as you expand your exposure to more and more creativity, from ancient art to ethnic to modern art and so much more, a few exhibits at a time. There's always something new to see. And unless you plan on checking out any special exhibits on loan, admission is free. Growing up, my parents always brought me with them to museums of all kinds. I have to admit that MIA has always been my favorite because of all the diversity of art genres. This is a great place to bring the whole family. There's something for everyone. And if you feel a little lost, there's always a friendly staff person close by to direct you where you want to go. Check it out!

Finely curated and hosted by a super friendly staff. Cannot say enough about their collection here, the chinese art history section is so beautiful I find it hard to get past it at times. They let me sit and sketch without interruption, and there is a nice coffee shop right at the entrance. Give a donation, this is the sort of place that deserves it.

Great for the family or a cool first date. You can learn a lot here especially the exhibits. Some tell grim stories about historical events such as the Holocaust or the civil rights movement, however, they are very informative. I leave this place with more knowledge and respect for a culture every time. Lastly, my favorite exhibits are the period rooms! The French mansion room is a MUST SEE!

This is such a nice museum, and it’s free! We spent 2-3 hours looking through all the art exhibits. They have a variety of paintings, but their of pottery and statues is very impressive too. Definitely recommend for anyone who loves history.

It is a gallery just like others. If you been to one, then you know what to expect. Great way to spend a couple hours. If there is something specific you are looking to see, make sure it is there before going as the exhibits change periodically. Don't be fooled into buying any drinks/food at the cafe on your way in as they are not allowed onto the gallery floors.

Went to the Art in Bloom exhibit and was thoroughly disappointed in the coordination on parking. Lots were full within an hour of opening but no one was out there to inform people. No signs posted. There was someone trying to charge $40 for valet parking and I later found out valet only cost $20 and was full at the time this guy was offering it. So there was no one guarding that lot from scams. I found street parking after over an hour of driving around. The exhibit was good but for a flower themed event, it could have had a lot more real flowers.

Absolutely amazing. The incredibly vast collection covers all eras of history and all areas of the world, and general admission is always free. I thought it was too good to be true when I first heard of this place but I was wrong! There's no catch! It's just amazing history in a beautiful building available to the public for free. Amazing free art gallery that could easily compete with larger museums! The free exhibits are always changing and offer such good perspective on the world around us. Amazing juxtaposition of recent and historical works. The prints through Covid were moving as well as some the Dutch masters they have. I recommend taking time to walk through the outer grounds to see sculptures and architecture. During Covid if you bring water you cannot drink it, but they ether coat check your water or give you a bag for free to carry it in. Excellent staff.

Free admission with a number of diverse exhibits. Parking in close locations will be $8. Staff is helpful and the exhibits are sprawling. I really enjoyed the Japanese and Chinese art on display with pieces ranging from BCE to the 1300s. Definitely worth a visit for the historical and artistic value. Also adds value as a hysterical place to apply inappropriate snapchat filters.

We went to the Sunken Cities of Egypt exhibition going on there and also took the audio guides for the tour. It was informative. In the past I have been to the MIA as well and always found they have interesting galleries and something or the other to teach you about history. If you haven't checked it out and want to enjoy a siesta hour during one of your weekends, definitely pay a visit.

An all day visit. If you're not a big fan of museums or you don't like to spend much time in closed spaces, this might not be for you; seeing it from outside this place looks smaller, but inside there are plenty galleries and collections. From ancient to contemporaneous art. Paintings collection is huge, just walking by will reduce the time of your visit dramatically, but if you really enjoy painting, you will spend more than 4 hours just in this section. They have small projection rooms where some of the work behind the art is played, that is also great, cause you get to understand the artists vision of art, not only the pieces that by themselves are hard to appreciate if you're not an expert. There's a restaurant on the lobby in case you need to take a break and also there is a space for kids, so there are no excuses. You must visit it.

I'm not sure what it is about this place but it feels really relaxing to be among such works of art. Personally I tend to feel really calm while at this institution and they have many flavors of art from architecture to historical artifacts and even more modern art it's a reality great way to spend a few hours. It is free to go and peruse the exhibits but they also have certain special exhibitions that you need tickets for like recently the Guillermo del Toro exhibit. I found the website wasn't really clear but how it worked at least for that was 20 bucks a ticket and if you are a member you get 20% off and being a member just means making a donation so you could technically pay less than the ticket cost and get a membership if you are really struggling with money but it's worth it to spend the extra money to support such a place that adds cultural to our community.
